Pretty good, but not as mind blowing as I thought it’d be.
546/1001
That was ok. I only know The Police for their singles - I guess I'll keep it that way.
It’s ok

This was great back in the day but hard to listen to now. Bring On The Night is good. On Any Other Day sounds like it kicked off the whole of US schoolboy punk. A lot to answer for.
Even if I'm not really a fan of The Police, neither of Sting's style, O found myself appreciating this album more that expected. It kept me company and I didn't wander off with my mind too much. But out of the first track, there's not one the actually stands out to me or that I would relisten to.
Gewoon prima? Eerste paar nummers beter dan de laatste. Op begeven moment begin je toch te denken hm zeikerds
A very pleasant album, but The Police had lost a lot of the ska edge that defined them by this point. Sting had started a lifelong journey up his own rear end, decided that it was his band, and the others were pushing back hard. The lyrics are cringeworthy in places, especially when he starts his dinosaur rhymes, but the singles rescue it. A solid 3, but no more.
Happy Australia Day you faaaaarking sick cahnts. I'm down here at Coogee, my favourite beach in Sydney. I haven't been swimming - the weather's a bit shit today. It's too cloudy and windy. Yesterday was prime beachgoing weather, however. I was only at the beach for an hour, yet I came away with a mild sunburn all across my face. Maybe it's good to take it easy today. I was hoping I'd roll an Australian album as the result of some cosmic interference, but I'm happy to land on something from the British Isles. This is my final Police album. I don't recall much about Synchronicity as that was 352 albums ago - the longest artist gap to date. I liked "Every Breath You Take" but, to be fair, everyone likes that song. I've become much more favourable to 80s music in the time between these two albums, so I'm hoping this Police album will be the one to win me over. I'm open to giving Synchronicity another go regardless of if it does. Interesting. I can say with certainty that this is the first reggae-new wave album I've listened to. Granted, that sound is only truly apparent in the case of the big singles, but it persists throughout the remaining tracks nonetheless. My interest in this album fluctated on a per-track basis. I went from liking one song, to being uninterested in the succeeding track, to being reeled back in by the track thereafter. The guitars are the strongest aspect of this album. The songs I consider to be the best usually have the best guitar hooks. The reggae-influenced vocals have a unique sound, and I like how they lend themselves to some fun, bouncy songwriting. There's a decent spread of instruments and moods on this album, too. The variety, unfortunately, doesn't save this album from my biggest gripe, which is that these songs generally drag on for longer than they need to. While the compositions of this album are decent, the lack of bass or complex instrumentation makes them sound a little one-dimensional after a while. Fortunately, this album was only 40 minutes, so this gripe didn't prove to be as bad as it could otherwise be. Book time. Quickly topped the English charts. A unique take on new wave. Wikipedia says that this album had two UK number one singles and was well-received by critics as well. Yeah, solid pick. I cosign this inclusion
I can assuredly affirm I think The Police were an amazing band. Although my common pattern with early influential bands is that I caught them toward the end of their discography - for me it was Synchronicity then solo Sting - and got burnt out before beholding the full span of their musical panorama. Before I became a 'cool kid' and just knew all the good music. So I hadn't actually listened to Regatta in entirety before and I'm glad this list coaxed me to devoting some attention. In many points of the tracklist it really pops with their sharp virtuoso rhythm, and in others it's a little flat. I expect there are other Police records on the list, so we can circle back on this topic again.
I should try to figure out more about where and when of this band, these guys are looking pretty freaking fresh.
I feel like I should really like this, but I just really don't. Message in a bottle is great and stewart copeland is sick, but I just really didn't have much fun with this. I'm writing this as I listen to No Time This Time which is honestly the most fun song on the album and is legitimately putting this back into 3 star-ville. 3.1 stars, doesn't really fuck.
Highlights: Walking On The Moon, Message In A Bottle, Bring On The Night. In a nutshell: giant steps to take The band were aiming for reggae rock- hence the album title. Risky move. I can hear elements of new wave and post punk as well. I adore the drumwork on here. Despite the weird lyrics and Sting’s staccato, I think it works. Overall: 5/10
i like this police but i was shocked i only liked 3 songs off dis album :(
Started and ended VERY strong for me, but the middle wasn’t as notable. Middle dragged it tbh.
"White reggae" but nothing about it seems Reggae except for the singers hoarse voice, which he isnt much of a singer given his voice seems to be cracking every few seconds into the song the Instrumentals are what made this album for me, message in a bottle (arguably the best song the album) has the Instruments at a higher volume than the singer, which says alot about why its the best song on the album anyway 3.5/5 Would listen again
Overall not for me. I recognized the Message in a Bottle song but I think the other major standout was the titular track.
Several big hits, other big flops
ACAB includes The Police
The Police is alright, but it's never awesome either.
The Police (and I only mean the band) is always cool!
Solid rock 3
Favorites 1. Message In A Bottle 4. Bring On The Night
Enjoyed this. Stuart Copeland? Come on, of course it’s good. What struck me was the production - very much just the sound of the band, all of whom are experts in their field. Solid.
There are some bangers on this album, then there are some tracks that could easily be skipped. Those songs are sadly mostly middling filler that is poorly done reggae. 2.5 / 5
Album #29: Reggatta de Blanc - The Police Genre (W): New wave, reggae rock, post-punk Singles: Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Bring On the Night, The Bed’s Too Big Without You I have only heard “Message in a Bottle”. Thoughts: This is an interesting album filled with reggae influences. Reggae may not be one of my favorite genres, but I like how The Police use it in their rock music to make their new wave music. Favorite songs: Message in a Bottle, Reggatta de Blanc, Bring On the Night, Walking on The Moon, No Time This Time
It was really diffrent from my typical type of music, didnt really like it that much
The singles are outstanding, especially "Message in a Bottle" and it's not that the rest of the album is bad, just not quite to that caliber. So I wouldn't go & listen to this one again & instead I'd reach for the greatest hits.
This may be one of the biggest bands of their era, but they're far from the greatest. What it is is new wave mixed with some reggae flourishes and Sting's easily identifiable vocals. However, it's mostly just ok; while this band have some great songs, this album seems to be mostly devoid of them. There are some legitimately good musical backgrounds here, but the lyrics are usually lacking and the melodies usually don't go anywhere interesting. In the end, popularity is no indicator of greatness; while some popular artists are often remembered as among their generation's greatest, many(including the Police) are not that great.
Really fun listen despite the potentially problematic title. The drums on this album are actually absurd. The title track has become one of my favorite songs by police. However this album does lose momentum towards the end and some of the songs feel less fleshed out compared to some of the bigger songs.
Chock-full of amazing moments that are intertwined with decent ones. Totally worth the check
Best: Message In A Bottle (Dis)honorable Mentions: No Time This Time - the vocals are a bit too much On Any Other Day - award for weirdest lyrics Does Everyone Stare - I like how prominent the piano is, but it gets quite repetitive The album is a weird mix of genres (a bit of reggae, a bit of surf rock vibes) and overall gives me mixed feelings. Most of the songs are too repetitive to the point that, even if they had a promising start or good instrumentals, they get drawn out by the end. But I wouldn't say anything is really terrible here, just gets too old too quickly. Probably won't be returning to this one.
They got skills, but I don't like the songs very much.
Message in a Bottle is good
Not as good as the other police album that came up.
6/10… rock / new wave / *1979
Mostly carried by the two big singles I already knew. I've always liked The Police but they've never been one of my favorites, they seem to be very dependent on their big hits, and the deeper cuts are not worth much attention. Of the deeper cuts I enjoyed the title track, On Any Other Day, Contact, and Does Everyone Stare. The rest kind of just went by without me being able to grasp onto anything. Perfectly average album, if you know the singles and enjoy that sound you'll like it fine but it's not gonna change your life.
A couple iconic tunes here and some that are entertaining enough but still mostly filler.
Good not great
Loved this album. It has some of my favorite songs.
The Police aren't my favorite band, I've only ever heard the radio hits. This was my first time listening to an entire Police record. This wasn't a bad time. It won't be elevated to a spot where I listen to it all of the time, but I enjoyed it enough for the duration.
It’s a vibe, it’s nostalgia, it’s not too bad and it’s not too much.
enjoyed it but didn't get fully immersed and isn't something i would normally listen to but had some stand out tracks!
"Message In a Bottle"! A classic. Pretty repetitive but still good.
Middle of the road for me
Helt ok album! Några bangers men tycker att lite för många låtar låter likadant.
Hit or miss for me. I do like the stripped down almost bedroom poppy sound they have going on some of the time. But it only works about half the time. 5/10 Favorite tracks- “Message in a Bottle” “On Any Other Day” “Contact”
Police Albums are weird beasts. All of them have one or two songs that are so well known that they're part of the DNA of popular culture. Outlandos D'Amour has Roxanne and So Lonely Zenyatta Mondatta has Don't Stand So Close to Me and Do Do Do Do Da Da Da Da Ghost in the Machine has Every Little Thing And of course Synchronicity has Every Breathe You Take. But once you get past the songs everyone knows you get songs that no-one ever thinks about. When was the last time you heard Peanuts or Born in the 50s or Man in a Suitcase or Darkness or Tea in the Sahara? Regatta de Blanc is the same. Any album with Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle can't be all bad and Deathwish, Bring on the Night and The Bed's Too Big Without You aren't far behind. But then you've got things like a strange semi instrumental, the bizarre On Any Other Day, a bit of wannabe punk and whatever Does Everyone Stare is. The musicianship is outstanding. Andy Summers knows no bounds in inventing guitar sounds and Stewart Copeland pounds the drums like a man possessed. Sting is... well... Sting and I'll leave it up to you to decide for yourself. When it's good it's brilliant and it's brilliant for four or five tracks. But there are eleven tracks on the album
not as good as synchronicity but still nice. a consistently good album
Fairly good one!
i like
The guitar work on this record is phenomenal. Some tracks just come across funny. The hits are hitting.
A bit of a weird one. I went into this album assuming I'd enjoy it a lot more than I actually did. Usually quite like fusion but this feels just a bit too unpolished for me, especially in "on any other day". Read the wikipedia page and it said that a lot of the songs were unrehearsed before recording which somewhat doesn't surprise me.
kinda not my favorite 6/10
mid album tbh
thought this was pretty good it’s an 6/10 reminds me of charlie ;(
Has some catchy tunes, not gonna lie. Stand-outs - Message In A Bottle - Bring On The Night
The Police's debut really lives up to its title. It's Reggae, but for white people. Key tracks: Message in a Bottle
Good able from great artists and musicians. Going 3.5 and could round either way but going down for today as the police have never really been a band I’ve gotten that into. Steward Copeland is a baller tho’.
Mesečina bato je
My Dad loved The Police, and my interest springs from childhood memories, but a Greatest Hits is enough. This is a decent album though, but again the two singles stand head and shoulders above the other tracks. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 188 Already owned : 43 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 4 Nope : 133
This album is like being on a cruise with your family and losing your child after dinner. Once dinner service is finished on the cruise, a band starts playing and there are drinks and dancing. Nothing too rowdy, but a good time for a big crowd. The music is high energy and a lot of people are dancing, which makes it hard for you to duck and weave through the crowd to find your son.
Nostalgic Sumner Summers
Has some memorable songs, but I didn't love it.
I like the Police, this album isn't their best, but Message in a Bottle is fun, and Walking on the Moon is very good. A couple of the songs are a bit too disco-y for me, so overall I'd say about a 3.33, so it will get a 3.0 Not quite strong enough for a 4.
Favourites: 1. Bring on the Night 2. Message In A Bottle 3. The Bed's Too Big Without You Least Favourite: Regatta De Blanc
Man, I love the Police, but I don't think this is their best album. But it still has some great bangers and some silly songs, too.
3.5
Not bad. Better than expected.
message in a bottle rocks but i didn't love the rest
Good
I like this album. Admittedly, some of the songs are just ok - Stewart Copeland should not be allowed to sing as long as Sting is in the band. But, by and large, this album is solid. 7/10
'Message in a bottle' is a great opener along with 'No time this time' being a good closer. Songs are groovy and upbeat with nice melodies but a lot of the middle songs suffer from being forgettable. Overall enjoyable album. Weak 7/10.
Didn’t finish it, got bored Boyfriend did try putting me on a couple songs before this and I still didn’t like them
i liked it alot
mid.
Boring as shit.
I expected I would like this a lot more than I actually did considering I dig a lot of The Police's hits, like Message in a Bottle, Don't Stand So Close to Me, Every Breath You Take, etc. Bass lines were great, as you might expect, but the rest just sounded kind of bland to me.
Good start, bad second half.
Good but not great. Didn’t quite catch me as expected. Simpsons: Yes
3.5
Enjoyed the first half a lot more; Regatta de Blanc and Message in a Bottle were the highlights for me!
A decent set of mostly tight pop songs but probably not their best output. Lyrically a bit light but 3.5 for me.
Classic album with quite some intresting sounds going for it. The more popular numbers where the more intresting ones for me. Im starting to realize that this is because so mutch of the band music from around 1960 to 1990 involves the standard formula of gituar, bass drums and vocals that i tend to pick the best of all them. I liked that they incorperated a more dynamic soundscape instead of constantly the same. Dont have a lot more to say about it. Intresting, definatly not bad. 3.25
This was kind of a gateway drug, putting a new (to us in the hinterlands) out where we could find it.
Message In A Bottle // Bring On The Night // Walking On The Moon //
A good sophomore effort from The Police. The standout songs are the classics, but there are a few others on there that are also well worth the listen. A couple fall flat, but I’m always impressed with the sound that comes from only three members in the band. 3.5 stars.
The second album from The Police which continued to push them towards global notoriety. Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon are the clear standout songs of this album, but the other tracks carry the same sound we have come to expect from The Police (except for maybe On Any Other Day. I’m not sure what that song is all about). Good overall album that I would enjoy listening to again.
The one thing I’ve never thought while listening to any reggae music was, “Boy, I wish this was just a little bit whiter.” Also. getting this album on the day Jimmy Cliff died only makes it sound even worse. This is too formulaic as white boy reggae and their sound has not yet morphed into the more fully integrated reggae tinged rock that will make albums like Synchronicity stand out as unique. When it works, like on the singles we all know, it works well. But it misses much more than it hits here. That said, it’s still a fun listen. Lastly, It’s good to hear the growing pains Sting had to go through to gain his legendary tantric powers. Ultimately, I think M.C. Ren said it best on track 2 of Straight Outta Compton ( and he said it with authority).
I've always been a very big fan of the Police, hooked from the moment i saw the video for Don't Stand So Close To Me on MTV way back in the day. So there is strong bias here. Stewart Copeland is a monster behind the kit, I've always loved the rhythm of his drumming which pairs perfectly with Sting's bass. Andy Summers guitar dancing around their rhythm completes the trios sound perfectly. They each shine as players without tripping over eachother flexing their chops. A joy to listen to. I'm listening while writing and the hi hat on Walking on the Moon literally stopped me in my tracks. This is what I love about the Police, their greatness is subtle. I mean it's a frickin hi hat, but Copeland makes it a star on this track. Love it. Sorry I got distracted by a hi hat and strayed from the review....anyway....This is a great album, but not perfect, few misses. But that's more than okay, I like it warts and all. There will be more Police on this list, and I'm already looking forward to more!
If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching the Police's performance on the British show Rock Goes to College from 1979 during which they played much of this album. It's fantastic. This album is also great, but can't maintain the energy or interest to be a masterpiece. The Police are best when they are writing New Wave pop songs. And there are some excellent pop songs on this record. "Message in a Bottle" is a standard. "Walking on the Moon" is a stellar example of how the Police are able to fold their dub interests into a great pop song that holds interest for a full five minutes. However, many of the instrumentals and/or experimental songs overstay their welcome, even if they are built around some great ideas. The title track works as an instrumental, but others, such as "Deathwish" run out of steam far too early to justify their runtimes. Others, like "On Any Other Day" are cool, but I have no desire to listen to them over and over through the years. My assumption, especially considering the excellent dub selections from the Rock Goes to College performance, is that the Police just couldn't capture the energy of their live performances in the studio. They just didn't translate well. Where this album shines, it really shines. It contains several stone-cold new wave classics, but the record is too patchy for full marks. Three stars.
Only had heard ‘Message in a Bottle’ prior to this. I liked the first half better than the second half but it didn’t go anywhere for me. Solid enough but not sure I’d return to the album as a whole.
couple of classics and i very much like there sound and stings unique voice. few in this one i would have been happy to skip but overall i enjoyed this albums sound.
Enjoyed message in a bottle and walking on the moon, some good songs in there, but didn't know too many
I always think Sting sounds like he needs to do his breathing and just calm himself down a bit. He often sings at levels of urgency that make him sound like he’s about to do himself a mischief. Obviously, Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon are the big ones here and they both still sound great, but, not being familiar with their album tracks, it was good to have my interest piqued by several others. For the ultimate version of Message in a Bottle though, look up the one by Leatherface. That’s how you do it.
I hate to keep giving 3s but this is such a perfect blend of good, meh, and bad. Message in a Bottle is good but we've all heard it a million times. On Any Other Day is terrible. Walking on the Moon is great until Sting starts singing. The instrumentals are the main thing keeping this above a 2.
132 Me tocó dos días después del Synchronicity. Terminé de escucharlo y ni me di cuenta.
Two Police albums in one week. Again, it was fine. I knew Message in a Bottle mainly because I played it a million times on Guitar Hero back in the day. I also knew Walking on the Moon.
Man kommer inte runt att det är en enormt stark start. Säga vad man vill om Sting men nog är det skickligt och svängigt. Ibland mästerligt, men ibland tråkigt.
Like a 3.5
The first album had some good pop songs. This one has one monster and overall the writing and performances are better. Owned the album sometime ago and this first full through listen for a couple of decades. It still sounds fine but not as impactful as it may have once sounded. The band is tight with all three contributing sterling stuff. One of the weaker areas are the vocals.
Standard Police album
Reggae as hell. I really fuck with how well this song travels in a car a night, it felt like that had to be a factor at play when making this gem in the studio. Obviously Message in a Bottle is the one I was most familiar with, however Deathwish is a damn earworm and On Any Other Day sticks with me lyrically.
It was ok.
this was the first vinyl record i ever bought (25 cents at a garage sale in 2000). i dunno if i ever listened to anything past the first song on each side though. the weirder tracks make you wish they'd cut loose more.
The police sound like the police. It’s an unmistakable sound
Good album. Drumming is really good, and the band has the ability to get into a groove. They are better when it is upbeat. 3.5/5 Probably would listen again
I'm not really sure what to say about this one. I was familiar with "Walking on the Moon" and "Message in a Bottle" already, and while the rest of the album has a similar vibe (reggae/rock ish) it felt like it was missing an element of something. The playing was good, especially the drum parts and guitar riffs, but overall it was solid but unspectacular.
I mean, they're good. I can just never get them to really HIT you know?
Pretty good, lots of good tunes but some filler could've been cut and a couple tracks were pretty goofy. 3.5
-‘Message in a bottle’ is by far the best song on the album which makes sense why it’s the most popular -Although it’s not my usual genre of music, I did enjoy the flow of the album and I would not say I disliked it in any way Favourite songs Message in a bottle On any other day Does everyone stare Least favourite songs Deathwish
It's not Roxxane. Decent otherwise but it's kinda just fine.
Obviously the first song is a hit and easy to listen to. The rest was fine, I didn't get too into it. Wasn't put off by it, just didn't feel pulled into it like I did with some of the other albums.
80s classic
Ok ish
was alright, vocals were middle of the road.
How nostalgic. It's just kind of playing in the background. It's not something I'd put on on my own, but it's pleasant.
Solid. Not quite four.
Message in a Bottle is an excellent track, but then as the rest of the album plays it feels like most of the songs just kind of meander and never really change in energy. And then about halfway through you realise oh yeah, this album is literally called "White Reggae" and all of a sudden that's all you can think about. It does pick up a bit by the end though, and there was the occasional good hook (but then most of the songs don't go anywhere else after them) Faves: Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Contact
Message in a Bottle! But otherwise the rest are mid.
iconic, pretty solid, a few classics sprinkled in, YEP must be the police 6.8/10
Some bops and some flops. 5 sirens out of 10 lizard wizards
Okayish first song popular
Favorite song is either not time this time or ofc message in a bottle (death wish honorable mention). least favorite song is probably The beds too big without you. The same riff over and over again for 4 and a half minutes bored me. In general I noticed that the album uses a bunch of connective motifs and almost “samples” itself. It was rewarding being able to pinpoint those moments. This album was really solid, not mind blowing tho.
Overall good, but nothing on this album was as good as Message in a Bottle. 3.5/5
Just kind of a boring, weird album. Message in a Bottle will get you at least a star though. 2.5/5 (rounded to 3 because it's closer to that
Not a bad listen. The Police definitely have a unique sound, at least for the time that they were around. Probably pioneers of the sound, if I wanted to dig into it. The biggest problem I have with most of their songs (and not specific to just these songs but one that I have with many songs) is the tendency to repeat choruses ad nauseum. It's like they ran out of words so they just repeat the chorus over and over and over. Musically, I appreciate the unique vocals and instrumentation as they are distinct. The songs aren't terribly varied in their form across the album, but just different enough to provide some interest.
3.5
Great fun, good energy and a couple cracking tunes. Big time synergy between the band
3/5
like the bass ;-)
I enjoy some white boy reggae. I liked this more this time around than when I listened in the past. It still didn't fully blow me away. I'd do 3.5 if there were half stars, but sticking to my round-down policy.
Would not buy
this list is ruining music for me. i'm realizing all the new music i like is just worse versions of old music i don't like.
6.09
I think this was their first album. It certainly sounds like a first album. The big songs are definitely big, but a lot of filler as well.
begrudged 3
5.5/10 Highlights: Message in a Bottle Walking on the Moon
Like the poppier sounds compared to most reggae songs. Themes of paranoia and loneliness and Message in a Bottle is a classic. Prefer this rock/pop/ reggae fusion compared to The Special English punk/reggae sound though the pure reggae sections with the Specials sounded more authentic, this Police record sound much more cohesive overall.
Overall not my favorite police album, but walking in the moon is a standout track
Some classics some weak songs
117/1001 The Police - Reggatta De Blanc Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ I'm sort of a bit hit and miss when it comes to the singles I heard from the Police and I think it's a lot to do with Sting's vocals. Maybe I've softened my stance, as I didn't mind it for the most part. Either way a good mix of energetic punk combined with reggae make it a decent enough listen.
Pretty good. Held up by the excellent message in a bottle.
I love a lot of the Police’s music, but I’m not as big of a fan of some of their more reggae feeling stuff. But still a solid album
They were young, having fun, and finding their sound.
Absolute fun album. Essential Police.
This album is fun. It really grooves. I think "Message In A Bottle" is a standout track and the rest is just "good," but overall this is fun. Liked Songs: "Message In A Bottle" , "It's Alright For You" , "Deathwish" , "On Any Other Day" , "Does Everyone Stare" , "No Time This Time"
It was definitely of its time during the 80s. I didn't think they were as popular as they were.
I enjoy the police but this album is not their best. Great start with Message In the Bottle but too much random jazz towards the end.
The Police were opportunists. A great combination of top notch musicians "slumming it" with punk (It's Alright for You, No Time This Time), reggae (Bring on the Night, Bed's Too Big Without You), and new wave (Contact, Deathwish) styles that were popular at the time. It got them noticed and put them on the map. The dead giveaway that these guys were miles beyond those movements is their virtuosity. Andy Summers, a seasoned session guitarist, has scads of inventive licks and lush arrangements on this album. Stewart Copeland's intricate drum work is unmatched. With Sting as primary writer and front man, they were a force. Strengths: iconic songwriting: "Message in a Bottle" and Walking on the Moon." Powerful, energetic performances. A fun listen. Weaknesses: Great album but these are heavyweight musicians playing below their weight class. No need for filler songs (and there are a few).
1. Message In A Bottle - 11 Fantastic vocals. Brilliant instrumentals. Superb lyrics. An absolute all-time classic. 2. Reggatta de Blanc - 7 Lyrically there's really nothing on the track but it's still great. Instrumentally it sounds fantastic and the quick burst of drum rolls adds a lovely touch to the track. 3. It's Alright For You - 8 Brilliant guitar solo and sound. Much like a continuation of Reggatta de Blanc in terms of the song's composition but this time with some lyrics. They are a bit competitive but they do not dominate the track so it's not as big as an annoyance. 4. Bring on the Night - 8 Another solid track. Really enjoyable sound and really enjoyable lyrics. Right in line with It's Alright For You. 5. Deathwish - 7 Instrumentally it's really really good but lyrically it's probably the weakest of the last three tracks. Still, it's a tone change and a good one. Lot of fun none-the-less. 6. Walking On The Moon - 6 Sounds like a tropical-vibe kind of track. Not bad. Lyrically a bit strange at times but overall it's okay. 7. On Any Other Day - 2 Lyrically this is absolutely awful. Vocally it sounds very bad as well. A complete depart from the previous six tracks. 8. The Bed's Too Big Without You - 9 Instrumentally it's not as fun as other tracks on the album but lyrically it's also one of the strongest. Very strongly written track. 9. Contact - 4 Another lyrically poor track and the sound is not as enjoyable at all, especially in the lower octave parts. 10. Does Everyone Stare - 6 It's bang average. Not bad lyrically although very repetitive. Overall it's a decent track. 11. No Time This Time - 6 Not a fan of the effect on the vocals. It detracts a lot from an otherwise very fun track. Overall a solid song to end the album however. Average Rating: 6.73 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 3.36 Rounded Down: 3 Stars
White reggae 😅
The singles are great! The others are like unfinished version of the singles. Copeland tunes have Zappa vibes (derogatory)
Like Hansel in Zoolander, I can respect Sting’s music without really wanting to listen to it. There’s a lot to like about this on paper - it has tunes, it’s punchy and the Police are clearly experimenting with different genres, and that should be right up my alley. But I still feel I’m unlikely to listen to it again.
🎵 ‘cause I’m an island boy, oh I’m an island boy, imma just keep wagwan, you gonna keep that gun, imma be staring at the sun, I’m just full gazin’ 🎶 Highlights: Message in a Bottle, Reggatta de Blanc, Deathwish
Ihan hyvä levy. Pitää ehkäpä kuunnella uudestaan kun ei ehtinyt keskittyä kunnolla. 3/5.
Whiggae…Britgae? Interesting sound either way
I like the two popular songs: "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". The rest of the album is OK, but I think this still a bit shy of 4-star territory for me. I like Sting but I think I prefer the post-Reggae style more.
Waffled between a 3 and 4 on this, and decided for a high 3. The two hits are great, and overall I feel like the band benefits from a loose lo-fi sound.
Another solid effort from the Police. Good grooves, and Sting has great energy throughout. Walking on the Moon is a bit… weird 80s cringe, but I’m willing to look past it on the merits of the rest of the record.
Message in a Bottle bangs, but I found the rest just kinda fine
Good album. I enjoyed listening to The Police.
Not really a fan of reggae but this album was pretty good.
Classic Police, pretty good, though not my main thing. Appreciate the faster pieces.
I had a review all lined up for this one based on how I remembered it, and it was only when listening when I realised that I may actually have never listened to it. So I scrapped it. Still, the Police were outlaws of love once, and topping that album would be hard, especially since they were out of ideas. What to do? Well, they'd had the bright idea to record in the same studio as last time, using the money they'd got from the previous album, so the label had no way to influence them. They could do what they want, and honestly it shows. I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way; Sting, Andy and Stuart's willingness to write goofy lyrics completely earnestly and step outside the confines of the reggae sound they cultivated is endearing. But, aside from the stellar singles, it just doesn't hold together like their better albums do. Tangent: More bands need to sing about accidentally kicking someone in the shins. Favourite Song: Message in A Bottle Least Favourite: ... No Time This Time Strong Bad Demerit Count: 2
New-Wave's self described 'carpet-baggers' record a #1 single, follow the punky reggae formula for the next few tracks, then got bored and did whatever the hell they liked.
I like the reggae aspects, or even the bo diddley rhythm they find sometimes. Seems like they pulled from fun places to make a fun sound. The album is really well produced and has a clean sound.
I liked the first side better than the second. I would give the first side four stars, and the second three. The whole thing gets three stars from me.
Classic album. Obviously Message in a Bottle is one of the biggest classic rock staples out there, but thealbum does have some great pop punk tracks like Bring on the Night. Stewart Copeland always locks down the drums, easily the best (and most underappreciated) aspect of The Police IMO. Will say, getting to the second half of the record though, it's kinda losing me. Some weird vocal choices, and odd musical ideas. Thought this was gonna be better than it is.
meh
Meh.
White people doing reggae
Not sure about the dude putting on a Jamaican accent for some reason, I think some of the songs are good fun and quite interesting, and they're obviously great players. Its a real mix though some of these songs sound more like the talking heads and some a bit like Gary Numan like Contact. They feel a bit punk in the same way as bands like the Jam but I think its probably worse as it seems they can't really decide on a single style. Favourite songs: message in a bottle, regetta de blanc, its alright for you, contact. Overall around 6/10
For the last four years I've wondered if I should've given Synchronicity a 4 instead of a 3.5. It's really kept me up at night. Thought this was finally my chance to redress the balance and put on record that I do actually rate The Police rather highly. Message In a Bottle and Walking On The Moon: great - classic singles to build a classic album around, right? Alas, beyond those two it's just a bit average, really. Bring On The Night and a couple of others are nice, but the Stewart Copeland-penned tracks let the side down. Apparently they were scratching around for material at this point, and it kinda shows.
I knew the classics (Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle). The rest of the songs were just okay.
This is the music they play when you go to the grocery store mid morning on a weekday. Not terrible, not great, just eh.
I’m not the biggest fan of the police, but I did enjoy some of the deep tracks on this one.
Nothing special
Sting would make a great valley girl
This was fun. I was familiar with Message in a Bottle, thanks Guitar Hero. I found the other songs interesting with the obvious reggae influences.
I started thinking I had listened to this album and realized pretty quickly my sister had their greatest hits album instead. I have decided I like The Police much better than Sting. There are some bangers on here and the lyrics are way less creepy
Lots of fillers with a couple of hits in between, very samey guitar riffs throughout, lyrically not fantastic
I feel The Police did a lot for music (or at least that is what we are told) but I don't think I quite get them. Sting's voice starts to grate on me in all honesty and a lot of this album sounds like a prolonged jam session. I love the punk influence and the start of ska showing itself in their music and maybe that is why they were important, for what they influenced others to create but apart from that as a reason i don't think i'll be listening again.
"And my fine son has turned out gay." - On Any Other Day Woof. Not aged well. This song seems a throw away gas but still...
Lots of nostalgia with this one, catchy as hell with great vibes all the way through. Definitely a few boring moments but overall an enjoyable listen.
Solid album. It's very unique and full of life and energy. Some really good tracks on here, and some that I was more indifferent to. Great playing, and the vocals were fun and lively. Solid album, and definitely a great work
I expected to enjoy this album, but it just didn’t click for me. There’s very little flow, and some of the tracks are just ridiculous. Copeland’s wonderful drumming squeaks it into a 3.
I love this album’s sound, though it’s a bit patchy on the whole. There are a few powerhouses here in songs like Message in a Bottle, but there’s also a few forgettable misses. I appreciate the band were at least experimenting with their sound on tracks like On any other Day, but the result leaves much to be desired. It’s an easy listen overall, with some standouts. Mostly I just enjoy Copeland’s skill behind the kit. ✨
Not really my thing even I do appreciate how it was produced.
Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon are great tracks but the rest fall pretty flat in comparison.
Yeah starts good, it petered out for me. 3/5 because I would have it on the background
Regatta de Blanc is what happens when three talented Brits dabble in reggae like it’s a party trick. There are flashes of brilliance (“Message In a Bottle” slaps, I’m not made of stone), but most of it feels half-finished and a bit like I should be embarrassed on their behalf.
I don't really like the police but it was a decent listen
Meh. I don't have feelings one way or the other about The Police (the band, not law enforcement, ACAB always). Their sound is just so milquetoast. 3/5, slightly above average is fine for me, as I did like Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon.
A fun listen
That sure was a full album of the police
Message in a bottle
An interesting blend of new wave and sort-of reggae - props for having an original sound, at least. Other than “Message in a Bottle,” which is pretty good, this didn’t hold much appeal for me.
I like it more than synchronicity *ducks tomatoes*
Solid album - own it as a record (for like $2). Improvement from their first album, and the big songs (Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Bring On the Night) are some of their best. Nothing exceptional, however, and the style of the album tracks kinda blend in with each other and I forget which one's which. A solid 3. Don't know if it's quite a 4? This is only my second album, so leaving room open for 4s and 5s.
- não sei bem o que dizer desse álbum - a mistura de ritmos caribenhos com músicos bons traz inovação importante pro rock - tem alguma coisa sobre ingleses brancos tocando reggae que me incomoda
I think this one is a 3 star for me. It was just fine.
not their best imo
The singles are great. Some dips on the rest of the album though
Here Sting manages to bring bits of reggae into the performance without going ridiculous on the voice - he’ll need to keep an eye on that. There’s some great pop songs in Message in a Bottle and On Any Other Day, the rest is totally fine but not particularly attention grabbing.
Goes by nicely and some great instrumentation but i wish he wouldn’t do the voice
Of all The Police albums to put on here in addition to Synchronicity, they chose this one? Outlandos d'Amour and Zenyatta Mondatta deserve a place on this list way more than Reggatta De Blanc. It doesn't mean the album is bad, it's just not really special or exciting in any way. I guess it's because of the "white reggae" aspect, while Outlandos leaned a little more punk/new wave, but like, do we need to celebrate white reggae? Is that really a thing to be excited about? Also why does there always have to be one fucking weird song on every Police album? Granted, "On Any Other Day" isn't quite on the level of Synchronicity's "Mother," but boy that line about the song being gay did not age well. The singles are pretty good on here, but otherwise the album is just alright. Probably closer to a 3.5 for me, but I can't justify rating this higher than Synchronicity, which I gave a 3 when it was really a 3.5 too.
3.1
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would actually, there were some songs on here that were a bit more loose and indie than I would have expected. Generally though I find their 80s sort of reggae sound a bit odd to build a whole band around, so a whole album was tiring. Still beat expectations mind.
Ah it's Sting from the big house. I've got it in my head that I don't like Sting, but I'm not really sure why. This was much better than I was expecting, much less poppy. Goes some almost reggae and punk sounding bits going on at times. Message in a bottle is undeniably a good track, not too sure about walking on the moon though.... On any other day was rubbish....Think the first half was better than the latter, I'd had enough by the end 2.5
Good, but not their best album...
White reggae seems like a stretch of the definition - I hear it in the instrumentals but not necessarily the vocals. Kind of a fun album. Highlights: message in a bottle
Starts of strong
mid
Is all about the Bangers 7/10
One of those bands you’ve never met somebody who’s said they’re their favorite band (although I’m sure they’re out there). The lead single obviously broke the band into the mainstream, but the rest of the album is okay although the latter half is a little more generic. The band’s strength is not doing the post-punk thing really well but inventing a whole new sound. I used to think of The Police as kind of an overpolished 80s band but the history shows they invented a lot more of their sound than I used to think.
You hear some punk and reggae influences here but it never quite comes together. Message in a Bottle still rocks though
It wasn’t bad. It had a great first half and then the intensity started to wane in the second half. I would prefer listening to Synchronicity over this album.
I have always enjoyed the singles - had not listened to the album previously and not sure what to make of it after 3 listens. It sounds like they are having fun - but I think of Sting as being so po faced and serious that it does not quite ring true for me. A disappointing 3.
It's ok. That's the best I can offer it. Even the hits on this album are meh. It's not so bad that I'd say I disliked it, but it's pushing it. 3/5
There’s some certified hits here but it’s not as great as their debut or some of their later work. Still, you can’t deny one of the most technically proficient power trios of all time.
6/10
Meh, prefer the debut
Pretty big disappointment outside of the singles, honestly! Nothing bad here, but nothing that makes me think I've really been badly neglecting the Police.
nice
Faque, pas mauvais, meilleur que ce que je pensais, pour être honnête, mais pas pour moi.
It was fine. Wasn’t crazy about the sound, I can tell the lyrics are likely quite good but I couldn’t properly appreciate them with one listen. Therefore a 3 feels the most fitting based on first impression. Message in a bottle and walking on the moon are obviously quite good. Vocals got annoying
Some more rock and roll that my grandparents probably listened to. Not bad
Barring a few exceptions, I never could find much to like about The Police. They are all great musicians in their own right, but their Reggae style is just not my cup of tea. This album is just par for the course. 2.5/5
I was not aware white people did reggae but apparently they did. Was a nice listen definitely some chill tracks.it was kind of airy too. I will check other the police albums.
Jeg kan virkelig godt lide det, meget min stil, men det er ikke unskippable.
Easy listening uptempo new wave album Highlights: - It’s Alright For You - Message In A Bottle - Deathwish
One of those albums that started as a 5 but ended up getting 3 after repeat listen.
Talk about three people that should not work together but should also work together. The Police cram into a three person lineup what other bands do in five or six. Each master of their trade come together to make an awesome album. Sting's ego can comprise another band. 3.5/5
Not my favorite album of theirs but love me some Police. 3.5 stars
I really, really liked Synchronicity, but comparatively, this one fell flat for me. The Police’s hits hit. But the songs in between are forgettable, and the vocal performance is weak to the point where it becomes grating.
The only kind of tolerable Police, this album has some unquestionable jams and some legit drumming. Hadn't listened to the whole album before in order, the sound gets a bit repetitive as you move through the songs, even with the second to last song "Does Everyone Stare" starting with a more punk sound then mushing back into the established groove of the album by the end. Will always sound like the 80s to me.
As with any Police record its very uneven. A couple of fantastic songs and then a mixed bag of "eh". I have to question, AGAIN, who is making this list? Of all the Police albums this is the one you picked? I get that music is subjective and tastes vary, this list feels like someone trying to squeeze in some radio friendly groups chosen at random to legitimize some of the absolute try hard trash someone thinks makes them cool.
2 great singles and a decent pop album.
Not bad not good. It has a few good memorable tracks but not the best 5/10
I always liked the Police. I'd definitely say Message In A Bottle is one of my favorite songs if I think super hard about it. But I truly can't think of I've heard a Police album in full before? Anyway, this album was alright. I never heard a non-"greatest hit" Police song and....eh it's alright I guess. One Any Other Day did not age well and I find it very funny. Bring On The Night is such a huge highlight for me I could listen to it for multiple times a day. I feel like a majority of the album switch between those two feelings. I liked it, it was alright.
Liked this more than I expected to mainly because I enjoyed the tracks that weren’t released as singles.
I've heard Message In A Bottle and Walking On the Moon a million times, but I've never listened to the whole album. New discovery: Deathwish. The rest of the album is meh.
Manages to peak early and sort of becomes this boring slow burn after. Not bad, not as good as Synchronicity.
Walking On The Moon saves this album from being a 2 for me.
Fine
it was alright
The Police finding their way with signature vocals and occasionally asynchronous rhythms. Good listen
Solid album by a solid trio, I just find Police’s message in a bottle, so to speak, has gotten a bit soggy in the intervening decades.
I was hoping to like this a bit more than I actually did. It's fine, but none of the songs (not even "Message In A Bottle") stood out to me.
Maybe 1.5 great songs. Too bad when the best part of the album is done in the first four minutes.
Album has two hit songs, the rest is pretty mundane, but “On Any Other Day” was downright terrible
Some good songs and some really dated sounding songs. Not my favorite album of theirs but would definitely listen to it again.
Gah. White reggae vibes are just kind of tough for me. Nothing terrible here but it’s just all… eh.
Fun album but this didn't grab me like a lot of other bands from the same era have. Absolutely one of the most gifted bands of the 70s and 80s but a lot of the songs on this album don’t really seem to go anywhere.
Message in a Bottle - no notes; raises the floor of this album, otherwise it's mediocre except for Copeland masterfully mashing the skins and cymbals
The Police has the wits and charms and self-indulgence
Two major songs in this album but i cant give it 4/5
Glad i første låta. Sliter litt med resten.
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: 🧒🧒🧒 Production (Remastered 2003): 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🥁🕶️🌴 Rating: 🐷🐷🐷(🐷)/5
More than just the hits, I do find the lyrics a bit repetitive in places
Some good, some bad, and a whole lotta boring. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t awful, but it The Police -at least early on- seem to pale in comparison to their new wave contemporaries. Too messy for my liking.
This sounds so 90s and fresh even in 2025, I can only imagine what the people back in 1979 thought and felt listening to this timeless work of art. Best tracks: Message In A Bottle Walking On The Moon The Bed's Too Big Without You 3.5/5
The ska filler tracks can do one. Bit disappointed by this really as the singles are clearly classics
Goes back & forth between solidly OK to surprisingly alright.
It's The Police. They're fine. It was fine. I really don't have anything else to say.
Those drums are great and the songwriting is accomplished. Sting always comes across (in The Police at any rate) as a bit fake. I appreciated their hits but never quite connected.
The Police are a great band. I'd struggle to pick the one album that I think is their finest (other than a best-of), but neither of the two that were picked by these reviewers are it. In fact, I'd rank their debut, Ghost In The Machine, and Zenyatta Mondatta higher than the two chosen. So, this is a 3-star only because some of this material flags, and some tunes ("Walking on the Moon" among them) get a bit tedious. Stewart Copeland remains the element that really makes this work for me, and Andy Summers guitar work is amazing. And Sting... yeah. I have a hard time articulating my feelings about him, but as ingenious and talented as he is, he's simply not my fave.
They have a great sound and their playing is fantastic, but there's something about them that has always left me a bit cold.
...
Неожиданно хорошо, даже за пределами супэр-хитов. Лучшая песня - Message in the Bottle.
Guitar Hero flashbacks as soon as Message In A Bottle came on. On Any Other Day - If Phish and the B52s wrote a song together
Mehh
Pretty good
Message in a Bottle is obviously a classic and it holds up, although I can never really get used to how the Police let their songs end by fading out instead of writing an ending Walking on the Moon and Bring on the Night are nice What the heck is On Any Other Day doing? It's cartoon punk?
Contiene algunos clásicos de The Police, pero no es su mejor álbum, ni por lejos.
I like the song where they sing about dinosaurs. That is not on this album but message in a bottle slaps.
FUCK 12
Lyrics not their strong suit, eh? Babby started singing along to the "Cha! Cha! Cha!" of the title track, though, so I'll let it pass.
Started off strong but felt kind of one-note by the end
Fucking pigs. Blue lives matter my ass. Take your thin blue line and.... They're British police? No guns? Not even badges? That's embarrassing... Damn. That Stings... Message in a Bottle is perfect. Please, tell me how you'd make it better. You can't. It's a jam, it's catchy, and it flows. It gets a mild infraction for the early stereo high hat panned hard left, but I'll forgive it. The rest of this album will need to kill brain cells to get less than 5 stars. Indeed, they'll be sending out an SOS. Sending out an SOS. Sending out and SOS. Sending out an SOS. Hate on it if you want, that's your decision. Rest of the album is fine. The Police can get a little same-y, and I think they admit a good amount of the record is filler. It's fine.
3.5
3.5
Quite catchy at times, but too much reggae. 3.5 stars
Regatta de Blanc is a classic Police album -- a few great singles and some other songs. 3.5 stars.
3.5
Nearly a 4 for me. Love the Police, but parts of the album are a smidge slow. It’s probably 3.75.
Gillar deras sound överlag och Message in a Bottle är en riktig banger, men kändes lite enformigt annars
I don’t think this album aged very well. The performances were on point! Guitars, drums, bass - these guys are masters at their crafts, absolutely. But I swear, Sting’s lyrics are something I could go about not having to listen to. His heavy-handedness with his lyricism is like a cold shower as I attempt to get into the groove of the instrumentals. “On Any Other Day” was probably cutting in its time; now it feels embarrassing. “I’ve got contacts in my book and in my eyes”? Yeesh. It’s a bummer, because Sting has a great voice! Album has some decent tracks, but I wouldn’t say this is something I see myself going back to.
When Sting mysteriously disappeared one day from the Band, the fans were devastated that the Police had no leads. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As for this album. It's alright. I appreciate the reggae influences in songs like "the Beds to Big Without You". But "Message in a Bottle" is the headliner here. 3 stars
6/10
good (not for me)
One banger, rest fine.
