Reviews (page 9 of 12)

Is Sting the worst part about the Police? Yes. Is white fella putting on a patois accent corny? Maybe. I still think he delivers some memorable vocal performances, particularly on the two big hits, but also on No Time This Time and Does Everyone Stare. Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers are great as per usual. Copeland is by far my favourite part of the Police, and his drumming is tight and rudiment-filled throughout this project. Tons of great, rhythmic, and unique sounding songs on Regatta De Blanc. This album is nowhere near Zenyatta Mondatta or Synchronicity, but it is okay still. Contact, Deathwish, and It's Alright For You are the worst tracks on the album. Every other track, I either didn't mind, or really enjoyed. Definitely my least listened to Police project, but still very solid.

I was never a big fan and I found this album to be OK as background music while I worked.

Some classics in there. Liked it but not enough that I'd search it out again.

A really solid listen that I don't think connected with me as much as I would have liked. Credit where it's due, the musicianship and song variety are excellent, especially the drumming. So this is definitely an interesting album. But unfortunately that led for me to an overall inconsistent album with definite highs and lows. Top tracks: Message In A Bottle, Regatta De Blanc, Contact

A fun album! I like the music, lyrics and sound!

Some cool vibes, some hits and some misses.

White boys doing Reggae didn't sound good to me, but after a couple of listens I was interested. Reggae rock would be a perfect genre to listen to chilling at the beach on a sunny day. Frontman Sting's vocals and basslines are so cool. Loved the songs Walking on the moon and The Bed's too big without you (the syrupy interplay of the lead guitar and bass is so groovy). But honestly I'm a bit tired of listening to New Wave. Please don't test my patience.

Interesting album. Liked some songs, others were forgettable

The moon is top tier

Liked the first half a lot better than the second half. 2.5

hell yeah bjonk

I give this and "eh" of the highest order. Album cover: B+. Fun and cheesy.

This is a real old-head hip-hop album. I listened to J5 a bunch in high school because one of my friends liked them a lot. I listened to this album twice, but the first time I was barely listening in a car. The album is straight bars with some pretty simple but funky production. If you like hot lyrics, this is a great album. I like a little more musical production, so this didn't quite pull me in that much. It's good, but runs a little long. No complaints and definitely enjoy it. 6/10

Pretty pretty good

I was promised WHITE REGGAE. What I got were elements of reggae infused into new wave rock. All while the cunty bartender dad from Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels puts on a funny accent and sings over it. I didn't hate this Going in I was already aware of Message in a Bottle. My memory of it wasn't as favorable as I recalled, this song is definitely worthy of its success beyond this album. I liked It's Alright for You and Bring on the Night quite a bit as well. But the big surprise/standout for me was Walking on the Moon. This song as well as Message in a Bottle are the two best instances of Sting's Carribean inflections. I love the opening to this one especially, the echo of the guitar between its very intermittent chords. It feels like this overseeing presence in the song as you are mostly accompanied by the Bass and Drums. I am a real sucker for dreamlike soundscapes in music and this one was really nice. Unfortunately the rest of the album was either very middling in quality or pretty bad. On Any Other Day stuck out to me as being particularly bad, the over-pronunciation of the lyrics in this American accent got on my nerves almost immediately. I could almost see this song being good if they took it in a different direction. The revelation of their son being gay is pretty funny if not for just how it dates the song. Not sure if this one was just a victim of being so early in the rankings that it became a punching bag but I don't see how its worse than a lot of the other music we have gotten so far.

Good album

Nothing groundbreaking but decent enough.

The well known hits hit hard, most of the album tracks do not hit at all

Дерзкий поп-рок, хороший инструментал, приятно слушать на фоне. Довольно таки динамичная музыка, можно потанцевать. Не хватило сильных песен на альбоме, релиз показался ровным.

An album that's only on this list because one of the books authors liked a couple of their songs and through on their most popular album. Overall pretty forgettable but otherwise inoffensive album with a few good to great tracks. I actually listened to this a few weeks ago and nothing stuck out but relistening the album was pretty chill and enjoyable. Idk maybe I'm being too generous. 7/10 Fav tracks - Message in a Bottle, Regatta de Blanc, Bring On The Night, Deathwish, Walking on the Moon, On Any Other Day, Contact, Does Everyone Stare Least Fav - None really

I love the Police and some songs are just lovely so I’ll put up with the not quite so good ! Nearly scored 4* but Ettie’s on high 3*

I enjoyed the hits and 'On Any Other Day'... there was some not great ones in there as well but it passed the time.

Fun and familiar!

Nothing wrong with the album, I just wouldn't listen to it again

First of all, it’s incredible how perfectly his voice fits the reggae style My feelings on this album are torn. I feel like the playing from the band on this album is so good, but a lot of the music doesn't really grip me for some reason. I've never really loved reggae, but their take on it is interesting

Listened Before? N Really solid effort beginning to end on this album. I may get this on vinyl as there are no really bad tracks here. It drags a bit at times, but overall awesome. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Walking on the Moon

I had forgotten how good this was. A right old stroll down memory lane…

pretty solid album, a couple of really strong songs.

Its good cause its The Police. Rhythm, crazy guitar chord progression, all on point. Just overall okay as an album though other than mining the hits off of it. Its probably a 3.8. At least it doesn't have Mother on it.

Never been a huge fan of the police outside of their hits, who knew they had so many quirky songs? Still a fun listen overall

I'm not sure I totally get The Police... I appreciate how strange and interesting some of these songs are, but they're not necessarily strange in a way that makes me want to listen to them again. Or, in some cases, continue listening. I'm sorry Richard! :<

I like the instrumentation. I like the Talking Heads-esque treatment of funk ideas in the arrangements. But man...Sting's voice is really tough to take over the course of a full album

Message in a Bottle & Bring on the Night are fantastic songs but every other song seems to be trying get repeat the success of these songs... maybe a little harsh

Yep - remember when it dropped. Four of the songs were radio hits (although I never really liked Walking On The Moon). Great variety in sound and styles, we all liked that slightly reggae vibe and these guys were on the rise. Bring On The Night is still the best song on the album, but all good. The subject matter of On Any Other Day helps this album make the 1001 list. Enjoyable listen, already know a lot of their other early albums. (3.2*s)

This album stands up to the passing of time, a very solid, fun listen. All 3 band members compliment each other really well and this blend of styles works for me. I love Sting, he's a skilled songcrafter and musician. I think a few of their other albums are stronger but this one puts their post-punk vibes on display and I dig it.

While their run was short The Police brought something unique and fun to the table. There's something about their beats coupled with Sting's vocals that has always worked for me. Reggatta De Blanc is a fun album. Not sure if it is their best work but it got more than enough going for it that it is worth a listen. 3.11 stars

The first half kicks ass Jose Feliciano Haunts Sting forever. Not bad, but the repetitive songwriting gets old after a few tracks.

not feeling the reggae

Was crazy into Police/Sting in high school. I’ve since grown heavily away from them. This holds up but I’m not needing to come back to white reggae

Is this peak Police? I don't know but it all sounds very Policy. Interestingly I like a lot of the deeper cuts better than the radio hits, maybe just not booked with them. A few different styles going on. I'll give them a three.

Music of my youth! I liked the Police, bought their first two singles but they became a bit "new wave" for me. An easy listen

I like staying for sure but I’ve never absolutely loved a lot of his music. There were parts I really did enjoy and other parts not so much.

The Police have a lot of great albums and music, but this one is somewhat mediocre.

Hey! ACAB and all. But: More post pink than I thought.

Catchy, but also repetitive

In this case, I loved that the Poleece cam knocking on my door. What a great trip back in time. Other than Message in a bottle and Walking on the Moon...I sure don't ever remember hearing these other songs. Some of the other songs seem a bit sloppy and thrown together, but still great performances. 3.4

ACAB, but The Police (capital T, the band, not the legalized thugs in uniform) are awesome. That said, I don't think this is their best album. I've got a particular soft spot for Synchronicity, and aside from the opening track "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", the rest of this one just isn't as good as some of their other work.

Not their best? But still bad The Police is like bad Pizza. Its still pizza!

Not their best

Couple of amazing hits, and a lot of indulgent filler. Very well played filler, but filler none the less

Was a huge Police fan in the early 80s, concerts and all. Somehow they did not last with me as a band I continue to seek out as a senior 😝. Favorite was Bring on the Night on this album. Liked ZM, OdA and GITM better back in the day, and lack of longevity brings my rating down as well.

Wel nice

Can they stop looking at me

Some bangers on here. Big fan of Bring on the Night. 3.5 stars.

1. banger, 2. bra/banger, 3. bra, 4. meh, 5. bra, 6. banger, 7. meh/bra, 8. meh, 9. meh, 10. dårlig, 11. meh Overall: 7/10

Right into Message In A Bottle eh? The title track makes for a cool 1-2 though, I would have flipped their order. Does Everyone Stare stinks. Some good tracks, some bad.

Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon are both incredible and the rest is a mixed bag, with the last song especially being a bit of a mess. A small step down from their debut in my opinion, and not as cohesive as Synchronicity

Mostly boring with a few interesting moments thrown in. Other than the two hits (Message In A Bottle, and Walking On The Moon) though, it was mostly forgettable. I liked the composition on a few other songs, especially "Deathwish", but overall it wasn't too noteworthy. 3.5 stars

The Police have always been a band I thought were good but not great and this album is the same imo. Some great tracks like message in a bottle, bring on the night, and the beds too big without you tho. Super impressive instrumentation on here as always for this band. 6.5/10

Good album, I hadn't considered the Police as influenced by reggae but now that I've read that I can hear it as well. Interesting. Kind of middling on this album I guess.

Great album. Some classic songs and some not so classic songs

Started off enjoying it but fed up with it in the end

"message in a bottle" is always such a fun listen!! was unfamiliar with the rest of the album...had more of a raggae sound than I was expecting

Day 19 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I don’t know how to feel about this album. It’s sort of all over the place with what it wants to be. Rock, reggae, post punk and while that would be interesting it seems to be the thing that hurts it the most. I do think there a couple solid tracks on here but not enough for me to truly love this thing. I do think a lot of the production on this album is pretty good and really makes it shine where lyrics lack. Overall it’s decent.

Generally speaking I enjoy The Police, but the only full album of theirs I really like is Synchronicity (also on this list) A few really solid songs on this one but overall doesn’t feel that special as an album.

Most of these songs were new to me which was really fun. I think my dad was a big fan of The Police at some point - anyways. There are some real bops on this, Message in a Bottle, Bring on the Night and Walking on the Moon were my favourites.

Pleasant, a few classics but a bit pedestrian. Some of the lyrics don't age well (homophobic references)

Some bangers but mostly just solid music, nothing crazy.

There’s some bops here, but, ultimately, more bores. A lot of this album feels like filler (the title track?). I might enjoy these tracks on their own, but together, they’re a little obnoxious. What I did like, I really liked. What I didn’t was tolerable. 3/5

Unfortunate, but it seems like it's not for me. Find it hard to really focus in the music and get in the flow.

Based on Message in a Bottle, thought this album would be much better

dont rly like it tbh

Why do Police songs linger on with the slowest of fade-outs? Fine but it's the Police. They've got a unique sound and that's worth some praise.

Fuck the police

Not sure what to feel about this one. I don't really like reggae, so white reggae ain't necassarily in my wheelhouse either. A couple of good tracks but most of it was pretty skippable for me. Fav songs: - Message in a Bottle - The Bed's Too Big Without You

I liked it for today. It's far from what I consider an excellent album, but it's honest, fun, and easygoing rock. Besides "Message in a Bottle," I was unaware of this "The Police" release, so it was a good experience. Compared with other albums from them here on the 1001 list, "Synchronicity" impressed me more.

A couple great songs, the rest were kind of meh.

Was fine, a little boring. Message in a Bottle is clearly the best song on here a d it's the opener, so it goes a little downhill.

Can hear these guys finding their style.

Message in a Bottle is a great song. The rest of the album is pretty mediocre though.

Was a fine album, don’t enjoy the Police like I used to.

Nice little album to have playing in the background. I only knew one of the songs in the album, but I bopped to this while cleaning the house.

I'm not the biggest Police fan, but this was good.

A few average songs, but liked it overall.

On Reggatta de Blanc, the Police double down on their nervy, reggae-inflected new-wave hybrid, delivering a record that’s undeniably tight but occasionally a little too comfortable in its own tricks. Much of the album leans on the same clipped rhythms and sun-bleached grooves, yet Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland are such an intuitive unit that the repetition rarely curdles into boredom. Copeland’s restless, jazz-trained drumming and Summers’ spacious, tastefully jagged guitar lines do most of the heavy lifting, giving the songs a rhythmic snap that recalls Remain in Light-era Talking Heads before that album even existed. “Message in a Bottle” pairs slightly wince-worthy faux-reggae phrasing with an arena-ready chorus, while “Walking on the Moon” and “The Bed’s Too Big Without You” stretch out into woozy, atmospheric grooves that show the band’s patience and confidence. Not everything lands—“On Any Other Day” is a rare misfire, and the title track feels more like a Copeland showcase than a fully formed song—but at its best, Reggatta de Blanc captures the Police refining their sound with discipline, precision, and just enough tension to keep things interesting.

Truly, a great album. I liked it a lot. Another gem I’d never explored aside from the singles.

Bien. Message In A Bottle.

wieder dad rock aber gefällt mir ehrlich gesagt sos step down sos sos sos step down

New wave, pop rock, reggae rock. It was a fun album for most of the time and then it kinda took a turn towards the end, just a bit too long. A song or two definitely could have been cut. It's a playful and energetic album, love the drums all throughout, guitar and bass are superb. Singing was kind of all over the place, sometimes I vibed with it and other times not so much. Also definitely enjoyed when the reggae influence was more subtle, it just worked better. Overall just too bloated, and some songs were clearly worse than others. I had a good time though. Might revisit some songs. Light 3.5/5

Pretty mediocre.

Good record to listen to.

Message in a Bottle is great. The rest is meh. 3.

"White Reggae" should not be a thing. Relevance to this list: 3/5 Personal enjoyment: 2/5

6 / 10 Reggae-Pop que hizo famoso a Police. Con algún hit y el resto del disco pasable.

Three and a half record. I love The Police's singles, but the full albums do not seem to click with me. The deeper cuts are full of that raw, punkish energy, but aren't great songs.

Reggatta De Blanc is probably one of the most fine albums i have ever done. The album is fine, The music and vocals are alright but don't really do anything all that interesting that other new wave albums i have listened to do. The album did begin to kick up towards the last two songs which actually did sound a bit more fresh and interesting than the rest but that unfortunately made up only a small portion of the album as you might expect. This album is fine, it wasn't boring, just kinda forgettable. Best Song: No Time This Time Worst Song: Walking On The Moon

Pretty good reggae

Started off strong with message in a bottle, which is a perfect manifestation of the police’s style and music. But stings voice is really terrible. It sounds like he’s trying to force out a poop every time he opens his mouth. It’s middle of the road for me. The instrumentation is great, the bass playing especially is good, but message in a bottle wasn’t enough momentum to redeem the rest of the album. Some of the songs sound like parodies of their own musical style.

helt chill

better than expected, though still nothing really special. I'm not a fan of police's major hits so it was nice to discover their earlier and punkier stuff like It's Alright For You or On Any Other Day. "one of the post-punk era's defining bands" though? that it is not. also definitely no to the reggae

The song "Reggatta De Blanc" confirmed what I've always suspected — I don't hate The Police, I just hate Sting's voice. And the creepy lyrics of some of their songs (Every Breath You Take and Don't Stand So Close to Me, neither of which are on here). The musicianship on this album is pretty great - there are some great guitar riffs and bass lines. It's right up my post-punk alley. But Sting's voice drives me nuts, especially on "Bring on the Night." I much prefer early U2 if I'm going to listen to poppier post punk or The Clash if I'm going to listen to a bunch of white guys trying to do reggae. The only songs I already knew on this album were"Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" and neither are my favorites. Highlights: "Reggatta De Blanc" and "Deathwish" Low points: "On Any Other Day" 3/5 and that's being a bit generous.

the second half is much better than the first half. extra point for their influence in the post punk era. 7/10

could i write poetry to this? n

Dont like that jamaican drumbs all over the album. maybe 4/10

This was fine, pretty classic stuff from The Police. Not really what I was feeling today, but obviously great songs from a great band, just somewhat boring.

Super unique blend of pop rock and reggae. Immediately recognizable and wholly creative. The song seemed to drag on and had a weird structure that I couldn't vibe with.

Leuk album met een paar bekende hits. Maar voor mij niet meteen een ontdekking. ***

The Police back when they were just a few crazy kids. Not really that interesting, IMO.

The followup to the Police's brilliant debut album, Regatta De Blanc may have been a commercial success, with a trio of hits, but it never resonated with me as much as Outlandos d'Amour. The debut was a refreshing, upbeat and exciting record that combined punk, new wave and British reggae, which was promising with great songs and passionate playing. Though, Regatta opens with possibly the Police's best songs, Message In The Bottle, the quality and energy gets lost with boring and uninteresting "hits", Walking On The Moon and Bed's Too Big Without You. It's not a bad album, as there are some highlights, Bring On The Night, (the underrated) On Any Other Day and No Time This Time kept it interesting. Something was lost between the first two albums, but still it might still be my second favourite Police record, since I lost interest in the band by the third album.

Some good songs, some pretty bad. I get tired of the vocal style after a few but I can appreciate it for a song or 2. The band is jammin tho, lotta good riffs and drums. Favorite song: walking on the moon

Sometimes I don't love Sting's voice and it seems to be mostly during the fast songs. Sometimes it sounds like reggae and those songs are my favorite. It would be a fun live show, the instrumentation is very good. Favorite Song: The Bed's Too Big Without You 7/10

My dad famously dislikes the police because they are lyrically repetitive. I can appreciate this opinion, and at times I agree. I do however enjoy the singers voice which makes the repetitiveness a bit less grating. It almost acts as an additional instrument, if that makes sense. It sounds like they have dueling guitars but they're only 3 people? I like the subtle reggae style they've got going on. Top songs: Bring on the night Any other day

Loved the reggae vibes those little white boys brought to this album. Good not great. Fav songs: Message In A Bottle Bring On The Night Walking On The Moon

Never listened to an album by Sting and co, actually pleasantly surprised.

I had not heard the full album before and only knew the couple of hits on it. Overall a good album with some funky bassline's

I think the genres included on 1001 are just piped in from Spotify, but I find it ironic that reggae is not one of them. Kinda makes it feel like after the dust settled The Police's experiment didn't really work. I'm sure an Eminem album would comfortably sit in the "rap" genre. All of this is to say, the appropriation is definitely the elephant in the room as I'm listening to The Police. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. The energy is great. The music choices are interesting. But I guess for me at best it just feels like a performance. Authenticity in rock seems like a hard thing to pull off. Lemmy from Motorhead gets closer, haha. Who knows though, like, what if TV On The Radio listed The Police as an influence? Working out my feelings in this little text box, haha. I'll take it over Deep Purple or The Who any day. I do wish there was a 10 star system. This would be a clean 5 stars.

Enjoyable- but cant imagine listening again

I've never really understood the adoration of The Police. They're fine. They're good musicians. They wrote some good tunes. I just don't see how they belong in the pantheon of the all-time greats, is all. This album didn't go any way to changing that opinion.

Literally “White Reggae!?” At least they owned it. I would've assumed “Regatta De Blanc” was a race of white boats. The hooky poppiness of “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon” had me thinking this would be a safe 80s pop rock record worthy of entering a yacht in the “Regatta De Blanc.” But in fact it’s from 1979, before Reaganomics saw everything commercialized by hippies-turned-yuppies. “Regatta De Blanc” is a last gasp before everything really did turn to yachts and the soft rock that powered them. This was the first time I ever heard a connection between The Police and Jane’s Addiction (“Deathwish”); elsewhere the album was very reggae-inspired, but somehow walked a fine line of inspiration without overdoing it or feeling too much like appropriation.

Alright. Message in a Bottle is by far the best track

Message in a bottle is a ton of fun in a song. The whole police style is like when a guy comes back from a vacation from Jamaica and wants to try having dreads. They have fun making music but their style is tough to stomach for a whole album. Overall it’s good and they have a classic on this album. 6.6/10

It was ok

I hadn’t listened to this one in a while and just the first track reminded me why I loved it. I just love the police: I think they make really catchy songs. The title track was also then quite fun and a break from the faster stuff. Overall I do love this album but I don’t think I can honestly give it higher than a three, even though I want to.

Didnt hate it but didnt love it either

Decent. It’s the Police.

Yep, this album is definitely white reggae. Not awful, but not fantastic either. Basically this album has "Message in a Bottle" and that's it. Album Score: 6/10

Never thought of The Police as a reggae band, but I certainly do now. At least partially, as many of the songs, perhaps 'Walking On The Moon' mostly have pretty apparent reggae elements and grooves. Overall it was a decent album, but not more. We had one record of them before which was pretty bad to be honesty, and this doesn't exactly improve my perception of them. 'Message In a Bottle' is probably the most famous song on this album, and it's a decent one, but nothing that can carry the album on its own by far.

Such an uneven album. There are some great tracks on here such as "Message In A bottle", "Regatta De Blanc" and "Walking On The Moon". Then there are some absolute stinkers that feel unpolished, more like demo tracks, and sound like a completely different band that happened to find the same guitar tones. The good tracks are good, the others are not.

Posaljite sos jer vam je album meh

Pretty good - 7/10 Little light sounding for my taste

I have avoided the Police all my life. But this album may have opened my eyes to them a bit. Im not a huge fans of Stings vocals but they work here. The rhythm section is the real appeal to me but I will also admit I cannot resist Message in a Bottle, its a jam for sure.

I like Synchronicity better bur can't go wrong with the Police!

I like the extremely tight playing on the album, the musicianship is excellent on it. It's a good and fun album but the songs aren't that memorable and it doesn't feel like a complete album, just a dozen of songs put together. I still enjoyed it quite much but I think it's no more than a 3.5 out of 5 record.

Is there such a thing as band exhaustion? I like the Police. However, in their omnipresent heyday, I think I got my fill. The music is good. I still enjoy listening to it when it comes around, but I haven't put much effort into seeking it out.

Message In A Bottle Walking On The Moon On Any Other Day “On Any Other Day” is a good funny song. Love the vibes behind this album. Very chill and energetic at the same time

If this was just a review of the album highlights, this is 5 stars all the way. But man there are some snoozers on this album. I wish it ended better as well. The last 3 tracks really just feel forced to get the album to length. Personally I'd be happier if it was just shorter and they left those on the cutting room floor.

Very enjoyable album. Didn’t realise I already knew a couple of tracks. I will be returning and listening to more in the future. 3.5

OH MY GOD IT'S STING! STINGERS HERE THE VIGILANTE

Expected better. ROXXXXXXANNNNNEEE

Not a huge police fan but this was solid record.

It's not bad, but the songs aren't the most interesting

he Police’s Reggatta Da Blanc is a cheap shot attempt at Reggae from the boyband. Yes, there opening and closing track , Message In A Bottle and No Time This Time, are absolute fire, but its like everything in between they were like nah, we’ll just do random shit and put it together. All in all, Reggatta Da Blanc is an alright album. Best Song: No Time This Time Worst Song: On Any Other Day

dude its just so gosh damn groovy. Not what i was expecting. Very fun, very nice. Would defs listen again.

The Police rock

Some strong songs: Message in a bottle, Walking on the moon, Deathwish, The bed's too big without you. But they go on for too long and they become repetitive. I realized that the lyrics, except for a few exceptions, are not very deep. I guess the post punk idea was to propose a simple idea and have fun with it. Not an album that I would be putting in my playlist.

All pretty good (songs from before Sting crawled up his own jacksy)

good listen, gets a bit stale

3 - pretty good, and some cool songs but I found it more bland than I thought

What in the name of the sweet baby Jesus was that?! The first half is so good, I thought we were heading for a 5. Then the second half sounds like it was written by a child, offensively bad. I guess we’ll split the difference. Fave tracks: Message in a Bottle, Regatta de Blanc, Walking on the Moon 3/5

Rating: 6.5/10. Good not great. Enjoyed. Would listen again. Genre: Classic Rock. Starts with a banger, Message In A Bottle, which I've heard before. The rest is pretty meh. Not bad, good energy, but not great either.

Starts strong. Walking on the Moon is a great start to a workout. Kinda meanders. One song, I forget which, too lazy to look it up…starts with someone saying it’s bullshit…is just well, bullshit. I like this one for its hits and the title track. Not much else.

Fun. Message in a Bottle is amazing. The rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to it.

Album starts out a bit slow. Sting’s voice just doesn’t do it for me. Luckily Stuart Copeland’s drumming is amazing. Bring on the night is a great pop song. Wonder if it was ever released as a single. The bed is too big without you, classic track with a reggae feel. Another album that has gotten better as you get further.

Has its moments

Fuck let me give half stars, this is 3.5

Does what it says in the tin.

Good but not great. The hits are great, but there's really only two. There's too much filler to be grouped with a lot of the 4 star albums. (Though to be fair, it's better than a lot of the 3 star albums.) Some of The Police's later material would be 4 stars, but not this particular album.

Message in a Bottle is a classic. As for the other tracks, I wouldn't say they're necessarily bad, but still surprisingly quirky. And It's also a bit too reggae-y for me at times. Overall not bad, but it's just one of those albums where I'm fine with only knowing the singles.

Something about the police really annoys me. The album tracks are more enjoyable than the hits for me. I wonder how this cod reggae would be accepted today?

Not as bad as I thought

It's alright!

Not a huge fan of the style but there's definitely some good tracks here and there.

3.5 but rounded down to 3 for putting on a ridiculous accent.

White guys doing Reggae, Reggae de Blanc. Copeland is a great drummer. Any Marley album is better then any Police album. I wasn't a big fan in 1979, I saw it as thievery, still do. They took something heartfelt and commercialized it, I am not saying they are not talented, but it is so commercial, like some ad exec came up with the idea. Blonde hair and all. I mean, I know Malcolm McLaren created the Sex Pistols as a marketing tool for his clothes, but the Pistols transcended that. I guess commerce and R&R have always been partners, occasionally the art shined through. The album is a great reggae/pop blend, late Boomers rejoice.

Every moms favorite man

Seemed fine, I really loved the drums.

So cool! There’s a lot of interesting ideas, but not their best work.

7/10 Catchy and recognizable

I've heard worse albums. It got more boring as it went along, I think? They need more songs that go somewhere.

This sure do be a reggae fusion pop rock album.

Bara ... gott Police

Good but not much

Good stuff

Standard stuff really

Gran diferencia entre los singles y las demás canciones del album. me gusta más el primer lo de Police.

Apart from the obvious headliner, nothing really stands out. Enjoyable but won't be returning to it. On any other day is a wacky surprise. The reggae pieces are nice.

I went in thinking this was going to suck and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t

yeahhhhhh the police snap here. opening w message in a bottle is the way to do it.

Enjoy the Police! Appreciated listening to the album in whole. Added ‘The Bed’s Too Big Without You”

Heard of the police, and the first song from this album (message in a bottle). Quite like them, maybe a high 3.

not bad, not great

- Never listened to a Police album in full before - Thought it was quite good but nothing incredible - Probably still deserves to be on the list so 3* - Fav songs: Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, It's Alright for You

back half was a significant improvement

A couple bangers. A lot of appropriation.

The Police are one of those bands whose good stuff is scattered throughout their career. The album has some good tunes, but it wasn't a core shaker for me.

I really don’t care much for the police. Great musicians though

So weird in the best way.

Not that great. It was mostly boring background music. But I guess it was listenable

Decent. The only song I already knew was "Message in a Bottle", which was by far the standout track on the album. As I said of the Bob Marley album, I just don't care for reggae - and this was close enough to it that it didn't do it for me

Another that I like but not life changing. If I had been there at the time maybe albums like this would hit different.

Much better than Synchronicity, which was borderline unbearable. There's a lot to like about the instrumentation from The Police, although with woke 2024 ears, there's a lot of pastiche that veers close to cultural appropriation of the reggae scene I think. Unfortunately, every song has Sting's vocals on, one of the most irritating sounds on the planet. They should play it outside off-licences to disperse teenage delinquents. Still, not bad.

Message In A Bottle is the only reason I rate this album 3 stars.

This is a pretty good album but it doesn't blow me away or anything. I was excited to get a Police album because I know their hits but have never really listened to a full studio album. So, I was interested to get a feel for their non-single, album tracks. I definitely liked their singles the most of any of the tracks on the album but found the vibe of the other songs kind of boring. It's the same genres but just less interesting/catchy. Overall, this one was very middling for me. Standout Tracks: Message In A Bottle, It's Alright For You, Walking on the Moon, Does Everyone Stare

Several classics on here. Some of the others weren’t my favorites. I love The Police, but I appreciate some of their other offerings more so.

Wooop wooop Das da sound of da poleeeees

It’s interesting that a bunch of British white guys decided to adopt such a Reggae sound, and even weirder that I never really noticed until now.

😐👍🏾

Nice to chill to. I felt the album started stronger and weakened with the last couple of songs. Fun fact - this album was released the day after I was born! Listens: 2 Fave Track: Walking On The Moon Rating: 3

It’s okay

Natuurlijk, Message in a Bottle is ijzersterk.

Had some bangers but most of the songs were mid

- Love the sound of this band - Some light reggae vibes on some songs? - I do prefer the non reggae songs - 3.5

Didn’t love it - didn’t hate it. Some bangers, but I like the first Police album more.

listened 2x

I was already familiar with Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon (which is fantastic). The rest of the album is fine, but these two plus The Bed's Too Big Without You are the standout tracks.

I just can’t really get into The Police. I like them in moderation, but listening to an entire album can get old quickly. The same can be said for Sting’s vocals in specific as well.

started off strong, got quite annoying by the end overall meh Significant 33/100 Liked 16/100 Added 4/100 YNN

Inoffensive. Was hoping for more.

For a trio of white british lads, they were pretty funky, especially whichever one of them is strumming the bass. It's pretty post-punky so right up my alley, but not grabbing me completely. 'Message in a Bottle' is an all time classic though, just nothing else really comes close after that, and it's the first song...

Two or three good songs and a bunch of filler. Another band where the drop off from "great" to "dull" is a cliff edge, even within the same album. I am properly torn between three or four stars - wish there was the option of half-stars! On balance, just too many poor songs for a 4th star, but only just. Their run of 4 massive albums in (about) 5 years probably explains the lack of quality control - more important to just get the record out!

message in a bottle- apparently this is like THE song off this so. i like the bass. 5. its whatever. reggatta de blanc- what. 3. its alright for you- i cant do this anymore bring on the night-

Pretty good album - showing The Police's continued evolution from new wave darlings to arena rock icons 3.5 stars

There are a couple good songs on that album that have become classics. Personally, I don't feel the rest of the album was anything I'd really seek out in the future.

It's ok. Has some good songs and some hits but...meh.

A few great songs, but much felt like filler. On Any Other Day was bizarre, and sounded like it was more likely from early Blink-182 than one of the genre defining rock bands

I enjoy the unique sound and style of The Police and Sting’s vocals, and it’s cool to hear one of their early albums and how it all began. I was only familiar with one song from it. The album as a whole doesn’t necessarily grab me or speak to my soul but I like it nonetheless!

I only knew a couple of songs on this album. "Walking on the Moon" was my favourite track, but I also got a big kick out of "On Any Other Day". Kind of a funny song! Generally I don't listen to this kind of music much, but I think I liked it more than I expected.

Meh Sure, everyone of a certain age group knows The Police and there’s two well known songs on this album that give an instant connect. The only other song that made my ears twitch was ‘Everyone Stares’. I have to admit that I really wasn’t much into listening to albums until this past year. Truthfully, I was expecting more and found it rather disappointingly bla and in parts too annoyingly repetitive. Someone told me recently that Sting isn’t a nice guy in the being a giant arrogant dicktwat kinda person. That soured him for me.

There’s no denying that The Police wrote some great pop tunes. There were a few songs here that I don’t think I’d heard before and they didn’t stand out as much as the singles. I would listen to it again, though.

Super familiar with The Police especially Message in a Bottle. Listening to it on this album though I'm realizing its actually kind of a meh song. I think there are a lot of other better songs on this album so it's interesting to see Message in a Bottle be one of their popular ones. That aside, I think the album is OK. I see the importance it plays mixing Reggae but that's about it. Walking on the Moon is the stand out for me.

The mix of new wave and reggae is interesting, the bass guitar is omnipresent and very melodic; when the lead guitar is not playing dull reggae riffs it's actually interesting even though it sometimes a bit too low in the mix to my taste. The way Sting sings with Carribean-like inflexion is quite annoying, that's probably the worst part of their "white reggae" (with the cultural appropriation issue it draws; the title itself makes me uncomfortable). Whatever its flaws, it's clearly good quality pop music.

Before listening to this album, I only knew Message in a Bottle, Bring on the Night and Walking on the Moon. I consider Message in a Bottle a great song, the other two are good too. Hence, I expected to be more excited while listening to this album. Rock songs with repetition of always the same reggae elements do not do the trick.

3.5 mostly good not great

Decent

3.5/5, it's interesting but not quite doing it for me.

Message in a bottle är magiskt. Göttiga röster och sounds i övriga röster men inte helt fångad

Startade starkt, sämre mot slutet

Pretty decent, I like message in a bottle

Talent and creativity across the board but was best enjoyed during its moment in the sun. This may be one of their best and I really appreciate the original arrangements and individual talents. Just hard to see pulling out the Police to establish or recreate a mood in 2024. All in all though a fine album. Just dated now which happens to the best of them.

Pleasant listen Deathwish was my favourite track I hadn't heard before

not my favorite album

It’s the police. They have a certain brand they deliver

Always enjoy the Police

I like the Police, but the album is just ok.

Classic new-reggae pop memories. Not as amazing as I remember, but still a great album

Did not release Message in a Bottle was a 1970s song (even if just on the cusp).

It was decent

3.5 Not a bad album by any means, but also not every memorable. I don’t really see myself coming back to it because in my opinion, it’s an album mostly dominated by filler songs. It could be worse, though. Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon are great songs.

Reggatta De Blanc, The Police Message in a Bottle -- great song, well remembered Reggatta de Blanc -- title cut, another great one Bring on the Night -- good tune, beat, lyric Deathwish -- great intro, good beat Walking on the Moon -- famous tune Any Other Day -- upbeat amusing lyric The Bed's Too Big Without You -- Contact -- Does Everyone Stare -- cool inventive lyric, nice beat No Time This Time --

I liked this! All I’d heard from the police before this were ‘Every breath you take’ and ‘Roxanne’. My favourite was the opening track ‘Message in a bottle’.

Me gustó

Felt quite same-y with not much at all to differentiate the songs. A handful of nice little catchy tunes but I’m not crazy about it. 6/10

Like the high energy tracks and the bass especially but the more cooky(humorous) tracks don’t immediately click. I figure most of it will grow more on me though.

59/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 As a drummer, I really wanted to give them four stars, just because Stewart Copeland is so good. Message in a Bottle, Reggatta De Blanc and Walking on the Moon are all quite good, but the rest of the album is too unremarkable for me to justify four stars, so they get a a strong three.

Stewart Copeland's drumming is outstanding! While I couldn't connect with all of the songs they were at least all musically interesting and well executed but there are better Police albums. A solid 3/5.

Some good songs but some average and boring material

Might be the first time I've ever listened to a Police song that wasn't a radio hit. Pretty good stuff

The only Police album that I've listened to in its entirety is Synchronicity, which I reviewed exactly a week ago. I was only familiar with "Message In A Bottle" and "Walking On the Moon" from this album. I went in to this album knowing that The Police's earlier work was influenced by reggae, so I was excited to hear something from them that was different from Synchronicity (which I love, by the way). This album had some good moments, but I wasn't that impressed by it. "Message In A Bottle" is fantastic, and has some great guitar playing, the title track had some vocals from Sting that I enjoyed and more good guitar playing from Andy Summers, and "Deathwish" had a groovy bass line and tight drumming from Stewart Copeland. The other songs on the album were just okay. I don't think The Police sound great when they're relying on reggae and punk; those songs were frankly pretty boring, and did nothing to showcase how talented these guys are. This album wasn't bad, and I understand its significance in the history of rock music, but these three are capable of so much more.

pretty crazy that this was the first album recommended. I have been really liking message in a bottle recently and is the vibe. ANyway. AAAAAAAAAAAA

רוק סבבה שיר אחד היה ממש טוב, איפשהו באמצע, אבל סהכ די בינוני

Pretty middle of the road. This was better than Synchronicity though.

Message in a Bottle is good, the rest are alright. I don’t like that many songs by The Police although there are a few bangers (e.g., Every little thing she does is magic) 6/10

To quote my friend Joe, “Good, but I don’t care.” 3.5/5

Think that’s the first time I’ve heard the Police album all the way through

Decent

Have heard the first two police albums and think I like this one slightly more. Still not my favorite but easy listening. Rating: 2.8

Solid if you like them. I don't. Drummer was good.

Viel me hier en daar helaas eigenlijk wat tegen.

first listen decent album

Message in a Bottle is the highlight. Otherwise kind of average

3/5 - Not a bad album but not great either

Decent album though musically it seemed a bit too uniform. 3/5.

Message in a bottle is a 10/5. Honestly the first half was SO good but the second couldn’t grasp me in the same way… 3.5

I honestly couldn’t give any real reason, but I’ve always disliked Sting a bit. He just seems a bit dodgy. This is honestly based on nothing at all, and I have no idea where this stems from, but it means I’ve never really given him or The Police much of a change. That changes today! Songs I already knew: Message In A Bottle, Walking On The Moon Favourites: Message In A Bottle, Walking On The Moon I enjoyed this more than I expected. It has a bit of a ska/reggae vibe at times, which I always forget to expect. The baselines are admittedly nice, despite Sting remaining dodgy. I’m still undecided on his voice, and doubt I’ll be rushing out to buy more of his music, but this was admittedly a pleasant listen. Side note though, I first heard Walking On The Moon when The Simpson parodied it.

It's alright, high 2

Some great shining moments but I felt the urge to skip a lot of these.

The hits are good, but they did some weird shit in between

Weird. But not weird enough. Didn't grip me.

Starts off strong with the first two songs and then kind of tails off...It was alright.

Solid album, I don't have much to say about it. 3 stars Favourite songs: - It's Alright For You - Does Everyone Stare - No Time This Time

My parents are big Sting fans, so I was ready for an album by The Police. The big hits were ones I already knew and grew up listening to and just for nostalgia’s sake those are still my favorites from the album. I appreciate what they were going for on the album with the combination of new wave and reggae and I think they succeeded in blending the sounds together, but I’m not a huge fan of either genre.

When I was little my cousin had this album and insisted on playing it over and over. He also had a Kool and the Gang album, so his taste was dubious at best. I always enjoyed the two hits and drifted over the rest of the material. Having not heard this in 40 years, it was a pleasant musical journey. The band are tighter than I realised back then. The same two tracks still stand out, but I also enjoyed the laid back vibe of the whole package. It's not a great album, but it's not half bad.

Maybe not as strong as the other 2 in their first 3 albums, but still good. S/o Copeland (3.5/5)

Más allá de las canciones más conocidas, todas sonaban medio parecidas.

Definitely unique for its time. It gets pretty repetitive and old quickly, though. Digging the drums.

It’s ok, heard most of it. Wouldn’t rush back or repeat.

Big highs and low lows - overall I did enjoy this album, but wouldn't consider it MUST LISTEN.

I don't really understand the love for The Police. Message in a Bottle does get stuck in my head though.

Great album. Went by really fast.

Message in a Bottle- 4.1/5 Reggatta de blanc- 3.3/5 It's Alright for You- 3.6/5 Bring On the Night- 3.4/5 Deathwish- 3.3/5 Walking on the Moon- 3.7/5 On Any Other Day- 4/5 The Bed's Too Big Without You- 3.4/5 Contact- 3.5/5 Does Everyone Stare- 3.7/5 No Time This Time- 3.4/5 Total- 3.6/5

Orkar inte motivera.

Svag trea.

I'm not sure I've ever had so much trouble having an opinion about anything. The musicianship is competent and the music isn't bad necessarily, but it just doesn't elicit any feeling in me whatsoever, which I guess is a complaint? Is art bad if it makes you feel like an emotionless robot?

Good solid album! Better on vinyl

The weird caribbean-inspired singing actually grew on me a bit. The 2 hits Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon were amazing of course. I dug the 'punky' tracks Any Other Day and No Time This Time and It's Alright For You but actually the rest of the record kind of felt like a waste of tape. Not bad just not interesting. Maybe I expected more?

Not bad but not my cup of tea.

Solid album. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
