sting seems like a goof but you can’t deny these tunes, there’s something airless about it but i like that
Nice
Much more reggae-lite than I recalled, but still very catchy. The controlled pacing of Walking On The Moon never fails to impress - such a good groove. All the singles are so impressive - Message in a Bottle is fabulous. Great bite, pop hooks and tight playing. The Police hardly put a foot wrong with their five albums.
This shit slaps wtf
no stand out songs but a good album through and through
Great album. Iconic
Cool and kinetic, with a handful of top-shelf cuts ("Message" and "Walking on the Moon") and more intricate guitar work, plus strong bass work throughout. Not hard to see how they got so big so fast.
If every reggae album would sound like "Reggatta De Blanc", then I would be a much bigger fan of this genre. Second record by The Police on this list and coincidentally also second in their discography. I'm 100% sure that "Message in The Bottle" is the best song they have ever produced, including Sting's stuff later in his career. Whole album was flowing quite nicely, every song had something unique, but at the same time fitted into the concept. Just a very solid album in general.
This is a great album but its not their best work (Synchronicity is). Anyway, it does indeed deserve to be on a list of albums that everyone should hear and its got a shitload of replay-ability and some great stand out single tracks. 4/5
i like the police
Very fun! Love the Police to be honest, reminds me of silly nostalgic dance routines from when I was a tween and free newspaper CDs. Never listened to a whole album from them I don't think! This is a good'un such a unique sound and feels like quintessential Police on this one. Loved Walking on the Moon and the title track Reggatta De Blanc really interesting sound and composition!
This album popped for me! Bring on the night was already a firm favourite for me. I think these are just solid songs
The band locks into their tempi on this one, and Sting keeps his flourishes trim. The songs lean very hard toward pop that's fun to play. The rough edge is a nice way to end things.
Some people are very quick to dismiss the Police, and I don't really understand it. They were a massively talented band whose music was smarter and better crafted than most bands working in rock in the late 70s/early 80s. Their sound is incredibly distinctive, so much so that absolutely no one else sounds like them. Creatively speaking, this album is more technically sophisticated than their first one and among the band's more adventurous works. The band shakes some of the punk energy of Outlandos, but they trade it for a sharper, more intricate sound. Every single member of the band is playing at an extremely high level here, better than most bands could ever hope to play. And this isn't remotely their best album. The lyrical content is on the darker side at times, dealing with subjects of alienation and loneliness. But the warmth of the band's sound, augmented by their signature reggae-tinged style, helps balance it out beautifully. Fave Songs: The Bed's Too Big Without You, Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Bring On the Night, It's Alright for You
A strange band. A run of classic singles and solid albums, yet I've never heard anyone say that they are their favourite band. Is it the pretentiousness? Maybe. You can't fault this album though - solid tunes, superb musicians and a range of styles. I think this is a back catalogue worth exploring - I bet there's loads of hidden gems.
Good album, very interesting sound but kinda long. The Police are absolutely one of one though and that counts too.
Torn between a 3 and a 4. Going with a 4 just because I haven't really enjoyed that many albums from this list
Great album. But they still had some improving to do. Drums are fantastic throughout. Copeland is a top 10 drummer for sure.
Reggatta De Blanc should have been the opener. Copeland going off. Walking on the Moon a classic as well. Does Everyone State has a real swing/bouncy feel. Album really shows off Copeland's mastery
Pretty good 👍
Bon allez pour les tubes je vais quand même mettre 4 parce que je suis de pas trop mauvaise humeur, mais attention The Police.
The Police's whole discography is great, and this is just another example of the pop sensation. Reggae-fused New Wave, there's a smooth and cool groove with the singer Sting who can be both mysterious and energetic. On the production front, it's a really clean album. I'm listening to "Walking on the Moon" and hearing just how clear the chorus guitar, bass groove, and drums are. The tracklisting is fantastic too. Two hits, which some high-energy tracks and many accessible pop tracks. Super consistent in sound and mood, with hardly any forgettable tracks. I guess the 3 tracks felt more like bonus tracks but had their merits.
I have listened to every album by The Police, but it's been a while since I last listened to Reggatta De Blanc. I like this album in part because of some of the music that was not released as a single ("Regatta De Blanc"), but my next favorite track ("Walking On the Moon") was a single. The second half of this album is less enjoyable than the first half. Regatta De Blanc is similar to every album from The Police. There are a string of stellar tracks, but at least one or two tracks on each album that don't fit in to the overall listening experience, and leave me wondering what to do with that (those) track(s) (e.g., "On Any Other Day", "No Time This Time"). Often the oddities come from Copeland or Summers, who may have not tuned in to the pop-music vibe as easily as Sting. I don't want to downplay Copeland or Summers, because combined they made some great music. Every album has something to keep in your collection, and Reggatta De Blanc is worth keeping.
Punchy and energetic
classics
I liked it. ‘Message in a Bottle’ is predictably the best one, but I also really enjoyed ‘Bring on the Night’. Not as good as their one I’ve heard before this generator, Synchronicity, but still great.
Three brilliant musicians, love the bass. Poppy but not cheesy.
just some fiine regular old 80s
Reasonably good air, but nothing groundbreaking despite the hit singles. Highly enjoyable.
The A side to the record was a solid 5, the B side was a low 3... so 4 stars it is lol.
This album was so entrenched in my brain as an 80s album, I was surprised it was 79. Not a big difference but still.
Goed album, lekkere mix van reggae, pop, en rock.
Are the Police a reggae band? This album says yes. Everyone knows the title track and it slaps but everything about it's been said. I think the real star of this album, for me on this listen through, is Copeland's drumming, it really elevates my connection with the material. Can you honestly say It's Alright For You is an interesting song without the momentum he injects? And for the rest of the album, where the songs stand on firmer shoulders, it adds an extra element. On deathwish its so locked in with the guitar it feels like one instrument.
Message in a Bottle gets this to a 4. Rest of the album is good enough.
A massive step from their debut less than a year before. There were signs on the debut, but things really begin to gel here. Better production, songs and focus results in an album that paves the way for their superstardom. Is this The Police album that goes on the list. I don't think so, but there is some very fine music and Message In A Bottle and the title track are tremendous.
New wave, reggae rock. Dos megahits. Un 4.
i honestly wasn't expecting too much and because of that ngl it gave a lot. loved the rock steady and funk influences. did not expect that from "commercial classic rock" at all
I was always aware of The Police as a band but not their music style so I was expecting some classic rock/rock and roll style music which I would’ve welcomed too but I was pleasantly surprised to hear the reggae and jazz influences throughout this record. I’ll be honest I do find the lyrics to be slightly derivative at times with a lot of religion, however the instrumentation and style of this record is great. The opener ‘Message In A Bottle’ does have a bit more classic British rock band style but Sting’s vocal inflections really give that reggae undertone. Compare this to track such as ‘Walking On The Moon’ and you can see how parts of this record really embrace that reggae tone, it is a much more laid back track which gives focus to this spaced out guitar sounds. Then there’s the jazz influence which is clear as day on ‘Does Everyone Stare’ with the piano leading the way and some light percussion to accompany. Now I don’t think this album is perfect but it was a damn great listen, wouldn’t mind another Police album on this list if they’re gonna be more like that.
Very good, was delighted to discover which album Message In A Bottle came from
Very weird to go back to this when you know their later hits, but good album overall. Solid performances from all 3. Mega hit to begin with and remains entertaining throughout. Some silly songs keep it from a 5.
less funk and more rock than their previous one which made the difference in enjoyment
From the police albums so far I got this has actually been a good one - less of the creepiness - still some of the hits - with Message in a Bottle still holding up, and Walking on the Moon being awesome - as well as a few other good ones. It’s not a perfect album - but it’s short enough to keep you consistently interested. And oh those Stewart Copeland drums …
I Stan Sting
Supremely cool album name but also equally hilarious when it essentially translates to "white boy reggae". Appropriation questions aside it all adds up to a pretty strong musical offering. Especially love the take no prisoners intro track, just bang straight into a sharp as shit (and pretty famous) riff. Minus one star for Sting calling himself Sting.. get it together GORDON.
I guess I should get away from the political aspects of music, where it came from, etc... But I wonder if mainstream radio would have played this without context of the support behind it from the power players? Is it a good album? Would I listen to it again?
Was interesting to listen to it more intently, because the police certainly have pretty interesting/unusual music... seems pretty percussion focused, odd time signatures, and very distinct instrument sounds. Really good album.
heh tunnistan bändin.. ja joitain biisejä.. tarkoittaa että yläkanttiin heh!! siis vaikuttaa se enemmän, että muut muut paitsi minä vaikuttaa tähän mielipiteeseen.. no hyviä biisejä kuitemkin. vaihtelevat mielipiteet hiteistä, parhaita ja paskimpia albumissa ja loput keskelle.. heh.. biisit tykkäävät toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään toistaa itseään ja fade out hiljalleen tuota hiljemmaksi menee se ääni mutta se ääni sinällään on sama, mutta vain hiljaisempi walking on the moon
Two fantastic songs, a few good ones, some kooky tunes that don't even sound like The Police. A very good album.
Not usually into white man's reggae but this was an exception
Firstly, he drumming - Stewart Copeland is an absolute genius! I love what he's doing on the hi-hat, especially on Message In a Bottle, which is also the best song on the album. The rest of it is good too, the highlights include Walking on the Moon, Bring On the Night (oh how I love this subtle guitar riff in the background) and The Bed's Too Big Without You. The rest of it is a bit of hit and miss, which I've found to be the usual within the new wave genre. Regarding the accusations of cultural appropriation - I don't know, I read somewhere that Sting grew up in a neighbourhood with immigrants from the Carribean and that made him fall in love with the music and this is sort of a tribute. I want to believe that. Also, the reggae inspired instrumentation is fantastic. It only gets a bit weird when Sting tries to do the accent too hard. The lyrics are smart and amusing (as is the title of the album). I like it a lot, just a few filler tracks but overall 4/5
8/10
7/10. Ah, yes, the reggae cops
Alright and it has Message in a Bottle. 7/10
Love this one.
Classic Album. Message in a bottle and Walking on the Moon have been around my playlist forever. Some different influences, like Reggae
Sting can really croon you know? That was great. Message in a Bottle is a classic and Reggatta De Blanc was cool. Loved contact too.
4 Fantastic album. I give it a solid 4/5 for now.
I mean, I guess you could say the fell to the sophomore slump. This one isn't as packed with hits and seems a little laid back for the band, but its still the FUCKING Police and it still rules. It's still better than like 85% of all music ever made.
This was great
Good bit of fun
FIRE
Not my favourite Police album but still good.
Fedt!
fairly decent, fairly police, fairly good listening. was impressed.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Message in a bottle, It’s alright for you, Walking in the moon
Definitely one of their better ones but still not my thing
Great to hear this stuff again. The early Police work (often) had a punk-ish edge that kept it the right side of boring. The singles are stellar. But this list is about the overall body of work, not the singles. And the album tracks just aren't up to the same standard. 3*
It's fine - couple of great classic rock tracks but mostly very similar.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever listened to a studio album by The Police before. Compilation albums, sure, certainly had a greatest hits album in the collection at some point. Never listened to them much though. This was ok, but the two hits on it are definitely the best tracks. Doesn’t make me want to go and listen to more of their extended catalog though.
#994. Even though I'm intentionally listening for it, I can't hear what this has to do with reggae. 3/5: pretty mid
popcito
Faves: Message in a Bottle Walking on the Moon
Couple of iconic The Police songs on here, mixed with some fairly weird ones.
Quite alright, a chill album. Shows its age a bit. The final two songs were surprisingly bouncy, very different vibe from the rest of the album.
Not bad, especially the guitar work from Andy Summers is on top, love his usage of effects.
Yeah not bad.
Chill and groovy
sting's pretty solid and there's some good ideas but the instrumental writing is more of a danceable repetitive than a listenable interesting.
I LOVE Sting's voice and was just okay with the reggae vibe of this album. I'd listen to several songs again, so it's almost a 4, but I'm rounding down.
TREMENDAMENTE mid. 5/10
I've never really listened to the Police beyond the singles on the radio. Reggae-influenced pop. I'm not sure I'm a big fan. I like the chorus-y guitar. Sting's a great singer. "On Any Other Day" is a good song. There are some tunes I just don't like here. There's a real repetitivity here that while I like songs like that, I find here annoying. They just seem to really go after a chorus over and over again in their songs. It feels like that's their weakest point, songwriting. 3.
Ok but kind of a miss. There are a few good songs here and others that are pretty mediocre to me.
Two hits on this album and the other songs are not ones I'd be likely to listen to again.
another great greatest hits band. this is pretty decent, but their live albums are where it's at.
I like Regetta change at 2:00, same with deathwish. not sure i love the vocals, but love the instrumental compositions. not exactly my taste, but honestly quite close. I want to come back to this, I think it will be an album that grows on me.
Copeland is an insanely good drummer, and he shows his versatility here too. Message In A Bottle is the best song here, though I'm left pondering if Sting repeats Sending out an SOS over and over for the last minute and a half because he's run out of ideas or because he's twigged that's the best refrain in the song and will lodge in the listeners brain anytime it comes on the radio. I remember asking my Dad as an innocent 10 year old what Roxanne was about, and how and why she put on the red light? He told me that my friend Liam would know. I don't think Liam was much more world wise than me and it was probably a few years later until my curiousity was sated. Liam's Dad was a chemist though so he perhaps had experience of selling protection to young men more acquainted to ladies like Roxanne, but it's not really something you'd have the chat with your pee teen son about. It was a more innocent time. Nowadays you would be the laughing stock of the playground, not just for not knowing what Roxanne does but if you hadn't already seen her Only Fans.
Better than I was expecting but someone should have told Sting that he doesn’t have to do the accent when performing reggae songs. I will definitely revisit.
Honestly this was exactly what I need to start Monday off. Some catchy songs I knew, some inoffensive background for the songs I didn't know. It doesn't blow my mind but its still better than so many albums on here.
3 mostly for message in a bottle, but the album isn't too bad either.
3 out of 5. Eh, The Police have better albums, hits aside.
I'm a big Police fan so I come in with some "good feels" here. And it's good. You can hear the musicianship starting to really cook, three guys who are genuinely exceptional at what they do and starting to figure out how far they can push it. The reggae-pop thing works more than it probably should. Synchronicity is the peak though, and honestly everything before it feels like the band getting there. This one has some great deep cuts. The Bed's Too Big Without You is legitimately excellent. No Time This Time is a blast. Good record. Just not their best.
"Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon" were the two singles I was already familiar with and are probably the two Police songs that I still enjoy the most. They are solid songs that aren't played into the ground like some of their other hits. The rest of the album wasn't really my thing though.
'Message in a Bottle' being a big hit is hard to follow, but there's good stuff still to be had in this album. 'Walking on the Moon' was one of the stand-outs for me. I enjoyed the sharp twangs and reggae inspired guitar playing spread throughout the album. "Contact" also feels similar in sound to some other Police hits, makes me think of "Don't stand so close to me". A couple funky tracks i'd call "experimental". A good listening experience.
Agradable. el primer tema es el mejor.
Songs occasionally drag on but show a lot of variety and have lots of fun qualities. Experimental AND fun? D: Highlights: "Walking On The Moon", "On Any Other Day", "Does Everyone Stare"
Strong start, weak 2nd half.
I own three albums by the Police, and am familiar enough with them in a general sense and would even say I mostly enjoy them, but this is one I haven't heard until now. I listened to this, and it's okay - I'd say even very good at times - but it's got me wondering if I like this band as an album band or more as a greatest hits band. Every Police album has some stupid shit and weird decisions on it, and this is no exception. A one-dimensional instrumental as the second song stops the album in its tracks right as it begins, and whatever's going on with "Does Everybody Stare" falls flat. That said, there are some songs that are absolute bangers that channel the punk-adjacent energy of the debut, with "It's Alright For You" and "No Time This Time" being highlights. I dunno, kind of a mixed bag on this one. A record that showcases The Police at both their scrappiest AND starting to show off the cliches and heavy-handedness that would form the worst stereotypes for haters of this band.
Pretty good.
I dunno, I have tried. I like Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle but the rest is forgettable. Holding out now for Outlandos D’Amour to be the one that turns it round for me.
I like The Police, but I've always been a little skeptical of them. What do I mean by that? I think they're great, they're all amazing musicians, the write great songs, they're unique and have their own style... but that's where the problem comes in. As much as I like their style I can't help but have this nagging thought always in the back of my head that they're kind of a rip off. Sacrilege, I know. But I just think that sometimes they lean on the Jamaican/Reggae sound a little too much. Even to the point of it sounding like Sting is singing with a fake Jamaican accent. Maybe I'm crazy, but that's the one thing about this band that always nags me. Otherwise, great. This particular album is good, but aside from the hits nothing else stands out the way I wished it would. Still a really good album though.
This album kicks off with a cracking track, super lively, nice riff, driving bass. I get the feeling listening to this that the drum and bass are so focused on each other that it gives Andy Summer space to flit around them. It works in parts. By into each other i dont think ‘in the pocket’ or sympatico, I think competing for attention. Copeland’s drum are the star of this dish i feel. Now it isnt The Police’s fault but Aus Crawl put in such an effort to sound lile them and i dislike Aus Crawl that much, it drags the rating down here.
poliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice
Decent songs, really ruined by excessive ads from trying a different platform for listening. Familiar with a few already, not wanting to go back to
3.5 Message in a bottle is obviously great and a few of the other songs were pretty good but overall didn't quite hit for me
It's definitely appropriation, feels a bit uncomfortable listening to him sing in a weird fake Jamaican accent. Disregarding all that, every song slaps and I way prefer this mix of genres than standard reggae.
I've never listened to a police record apart from hearing the obvious hits on the radio. This is OK, at times it is a bit too quirky and frantic to properly enjoy. Great musicianship all round. Is it really reggae? Not for me to say. Bit cheeky calling it white reggae as if they own that genre but then again its not for me to say. Anyway, I'm fascinated by this band despite not really knowing their music. The drama and politics in the band would make for a great documentary. Maybe there is one, I haven't checked.
The Police put out 5 albums and honestly any of them could fit here. Not bad for a band that must have been impossible to properly promote. Oh yeah, the police are gonna be there? I'll pass. Anyway, I guess this is as good a second choice as any. I'd probably have gone Ghost in the Machine tho. We all know what the first choice is. The singles themselves are, well, singular. Message in a Bottle captures isolation and desperation beautifully alongside that iconic guitar line. Walking on the Moon FEELS like it's shimmering through zero-g and no oxygen. It's airy and bouncy and just haunted enough. Both of these would be fair competition for the best songs of the 80s if they weren't released in 1979. Flawless tracks and those alone set this up for a favorable rating. It's an unenviable task to be the rest of the album, then, and try to live up to that. And like, nothing is bad of course, but I think someone could tell what the singles were even if they heard this on random with no further context. For my money the best of the rest would probably be “Deathwish” but even the worst of the rest is still interesting. I do disagree with the concept of “the bed's too big without you” though. No such thing as a too big bed, lonely or not. I feel like this is a 3.5, maybe a bit higher, but I don't think it quite nears a 4, so i'll give it 3* in the generator.
Bring on the Night might be my favorite Police song of all time. There's a number of other great tracks on here too, but there are also a few that I don't care for. It's definitely an album worth revisiting.
Andy Summers studio magic on Message in a Bottle is absolutely goated, otherwise, fairly pleasant but I think they are really a greatest hits band - and if I had to pick two of their albums for this list I'd have picked Outlandos D',amour and Ghost in the Machine
It's front half is good but falls off hard.
In its time I'm sure this one has an impact, and Message in a Bottle absolutely endures. White reggae... Ok. Kind of sounds like a larp these days. It's not terrible, and Sting's voice is good and unique enough to put this one on the list, but I'm not grabbing this one over other Police offerings very often.
Îmi place sunetul raggae și diferit
Message In A Bottle - 4/5 Reggatta De Blanc - 3/5 It's Alright For You - 3/5 Bring On The Night - 3.5/5 Deathwish - 2.5/5 Walking On The Moon - 3/5 On Any Other Day - 3.5/5 The Bed's Too Big Without You - 3/5 Contact - 2.5/5 Does Everyone Stare - 2.5/5 No Time This Time - 3/5
I almost like them more than I do. Almost.
I only had a really cursory experience with the Police but now I can very clearly hear the reggae influence/appropriation. It's fine, Message in a Bottle is of course good, though I hated how much it repeated the ending bit in Guitar Hero.
The album was good. There were some songs that I liked, but it wasn't that bad overall.
My second Police album in the last couple of weeks and I think I preferred this to Synchronicity. As I said with that, I’m a greatest hits fan so the albums are new ground. I wanted to give this 4 stars but in truth, it perhaps falls a little short, although further listens might change my mind. Message in a Bottle remains a classic.
Rather scattershot album. Some songs have that classic pop meets reggae vibe, others lean into their punk roots, while others verse into Devo / Oingo Boingo territory. This isn't my favorite Police album, but it's fine.
Not a bad album, but I prefer Synchronicity
Começa bem
Decent but like nothing majorly stood out
Message in a Bottle.
Lots of sound for just three dudes.
Best Track - "Message In A Bottle"
an easy listen with some classics
a decent album in that i enjoyed the energy as a whole and fucked with some of the tracks but i don't know that i would return to it as a complete album. i am less into the reggae-heavy tracks--it's just not a genre i've ever been drawn to and i imagine if i wanted to give it a real try i would not turn to sting first. fav: on any other day
message in a bottle: 6/10 reggatta de blanc: 4/10 its alright for you: 5/10 bring on the night: 5/10 deathwish: 6/10 walking on the moon: 5/10 or any other day: 6/10 the beds too big without you: 5/10 contact: 5/10 does everyone stare: 0/10 scared me no time this time: 5/10
It may not be my favorite thing ever but The Police were doing something interesting for their time and I think it's worth hearing at least once. This one is a little more consistent than Synchronicty and while it almost labels itself as 'white people reggae' I think it's altered enough to be it's own thing, it's almost more like they were imitating dub sometimes.
I just listened to Message in a Bottle today before rolling this, pretty eerie. Yeah i mean it’s alright, i don’t particularly care for this record outside of the hits, and really that goes for their whole discography, decently solid across their 5 albums, but never truly amazing. Standouts are Message in a Bottle and walking on the moon.
Cuando escucho lo que era el rock en estos años y saber que los padres se escandalrizaron por eso, me pregunto que sentirían hoy en día. Nice classics.
Fortunately for me, The Police are one of my favorite bands ever. Unfortunately for Reggatta De Blanc, this is my least favorite album of theirs. My rating here exists in a vacuum; knowing the mastery that followed this album makes me slightly more critical of this record, if only because I know what the band is capable of. Great songs to be sure, but not as polished as Zenyatta Mondatta, Synchronicity, and Ghost in the Machine. Favorite track: Message In A Bottle or No Time This Time
Its been a while since listening to this one straight through. I forgot the amount of different, almost kitschy songs that it included. Still, with several classics, it is quite an album
sometimes i forget that spyro the dragon ost composer stewart copeland was also in a band. i think i prefer his work on spyro tho cos this album is kinda just... fine? as expected, "message in a bottle" is great. but i can definitely see (hear?) why that's the only track off this album i recognise. i enjoy the dub/reggae inspired takes on new wave throughout the album, especially in eg. "walking on the moon" and "the bed's too big without you", and there's a fair bit of variety too so it doesn't get boring as such. but even including the other tracks i've mentioned, nothing really pops the same way the opening song does, yknow? i don't really know what else to say about this one. it really is just, fine! maybe the other album they have on the list is better?
So distinct, album maintains a consistent musical theme. But maybe all music from the police sounds the same... this just in it does
This is a great pop-rock album with some gems, but also some less enthralling tracks.
Going to count this as another Newcastle album First full Police album I’ve heard, always liked all their popular singles Getting PTSD from hurting my fingers years ago learning the riff from Message in a Bottle
Starts off pretty strong, even the first few songs after message in a bottle, but it doesn’t really go anywhere and all ends up sounding pretty samey 3.5
The highs are pretty epic, but the lows are almost comically bad, even accounting for the quality of the playing.
Very surprised with influences on this album
I enjoyed some of the songs but a lot of it felt very repetitive to me. Just not really my thing. Don't mind listening to the hits on it but I wouldn't revisit the album. Fav song: Message In A Bottle Least fav: No Time This Time
There’s some fun lyrics here, but not enough here to make this a super fun listen. 2.5 stars rounding up.
Two really GREAT hits, among a lot of just-okay album cuts. 3 stars, I guess?
I have never been able to get into the Police. They’re a greatest hits band for me.
Great album with a few classics! 3.5 stars
Favorite Tracks: Message in a Bottle / Reggata de Blanc / Deathwish Rating: 3.4 I listened to the (Remastered 2003) version in Lossless. Musically tight if a bit raw, but I generally enjoyed this. More new-wave / post-punk than reggae in my book, outside of some of Sting's bass lines.
Me gusta Police aunque los convirtieron en algo comercial creo que su espíritu no lo era. Tienen buenas canciones en todos los discos y tienen un disco redondísimo como es Synchronicity. De este me guardo «Message in a Bottle» (creo que mi hermano tenía el single en vinilo por ahí), «Bring on the Night», «Walking on the Moon» y «On Any Other Day»
No es mi tipo, pero una escucha no está mal.
Of course message in a bottle was great but the rest was uninspired
2.75
Message In A Bottle is a classic for sure, and the resto of the album is also pretty good, although it did feel a bit distant from itself. On Any Other Day was one of my other favorites, pretty funny. 6.2/10
5.5/10 Will I add this album to my library? no
Helt ok, inget speciellt
I find stings vocals too whiny at times. A solid album with solid music but a lot of the time I find it just sounding too similar with an overlay of whine.
It's an odd album. Some songs are fantastic and some completely missed the mark A solid, weird 3/5
Rating: 3 Favorite Song: Does Everyone Stare Least Favorite: Reggatta De Blanc
I always enjoy and roll my eyes at Sting’s incredibly silly puns and this title is no exception. Pourquoi en français? Parce-que! He’s a smart guy, he’s happy to let you know he’s a smart guy, but maybe doesn’t take himself quite too seriously you see. After all, he’s a bass player. RDB’s the sole Police album where they get the balance right between performances, instrumentation, and songwriting. That’s not to say the latter wasn’t dramatically better just a few years later, but there’s a spare, confident, give and take in the performances that would be lacking as Sting became, well, Sting. It’s also a record where the album cuts aren’t disasters. This is in part because they were firing on all cylinders, but they/Sting weren’t yet accomplished enough pop craftsman that they would let a song like Bring on the Night make it to record. It has maybe my favourite Police verse thanks to Summers and then runs smack into an incredibly pat, formulaic, just good enough place holder of a chorus before wisely vamping on the verse melody some more throughout. Future versions of this would’ve chucked the chorus for something better, added a pre chorus for tension, or simply not included the track at all, likely in favour of some “experiment” or whatever. Instead, hey, it is indeed good enough. That’s charming!
7/10
I think I like the idea of listening to the Police more than I actually enjoy listening to them; not too sure why I think about that sort of stuff. They have really good hit songs, like "Message in a Bottle" for instance, but the rest of the album tends to be quite lame. I experienced this with their first album around two years ago. It's just filled with underwhelming new wave/reggae music. Just totally meaningless to me. Highlight Song/s: "Message in a Bottle"
Mostly First Listen; 3.5; Wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was more fun, quirky, new wavy than I thought it would be. Favorite Track: It's Alright for You
My first Police aalbum. I actually enjoyed it- they have a really distinct style and a lot of hits. Sometimes veered into silly territory, but overall was enjoyable.
it's fine. Meh
It's alright. I get why they called it white reggae.
went into this really wanting to hate it but it’s fine?? a very weird mix of perfectly okay peppy 80’s pop and absolutely atrocious “white reggae” (UUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH) but the good tracks outweigh the stinkers in my opinion. had my head bobbing occasionally, it’s not bad i guess
Enjoyed most of this album, a couple of later tracks a bit ho hum.like they ran out of ideas. Loved the drumming and some of the guitar riffs
Ah, the white man's reggae...not bad. I can see why those two songs are still in the cultural zeitgeist. Still not quite for me. But catchy.
Incredible musicianship. Sting’s not my favorite vocalist. Pleasantly surprised.
Slip it in the backyard
Bring on the night est bien ! Évidemment walking on the Moon est bien. Je me surprends quand même à pas mal danser sur l’album Ah : alerte homophobie sur on any other day The bed’s too big without you : bien ! L’album finit un peu weak sur une chanson quelconque 7/10
Couple of great hits off this album but there are also some songs that are a bit too "weird" for me. Deathwish sounded a bit too much like Reggatta De Blanc too. Like, all the musicians are impeccable. But sometimes the vocals can get a bit grate-y and annoying. Still full of some of the best bass and guitar riffs I've heard in a long time with perfect drums. Favourite tracks: Message In A Bottle, It's Alright For You, Bring On The Night, Walking On The Moon, The Bed's Too Big Without You, Contact 3.5/5
The Police! ACAB, but there is one exception: the Police! Why do they do reggae and punk together! It doesn’t make sense, but it does. How did they get that idea? It’s funny , it’s like chocolate and peanut butter. Anyway these songs are pretty cool even though they kind of drag in the second half. But they haven’t hit their peak form. O have to stop writing when I’m stoned.
I feel like, since it's a 70s album, it makes sense that it feels a bit lifeless. To me, it's a mediocre album—I really think it has some good songs, but I can't single out any that are particularly perfect or terrible; it's just a “meh.”
Maybe more like 3.5
Great album, a couple of absolute bangers and the flow is perfect.
I like “it’s Alright for You” and “Deathwish.” Album is solid. I can hear the late 70s/early 80s in the album. I would call beat propulsive. I can hear reggae influence most on “Walking on the Moon” and “The Bed’s Too Big without You.” “On Any Other Day” is the first time I heard Stewart Copeland as the lead singer.
dit ken ik!! dit s leuk maar wel beetje basic rock
My 2nd album of theirs from this challenge and I have similar feelings to the first. ... in brief, didn't like Sting, ignored The Police, this is ok, interesting in places, probably need to hear it more than once, may return, may not.
A few bangers. Just north of 3.5*
A few really good songs and the rest, meh
In the past, I have found The Police's brand of ' New Wave' to be far too soaked in dub/reggae for my liking but I found this album to be enjoyable and a little wilder than I anticipated. The drumming is elite and it seems like the band are 'in on' the appropriation of the sounds, more so then cribbing.
Fine, easy listening.
Meh... Como casi todo lo que tiene que ver con Sting. Unos cuantos clásicos (de eso no hay dudas) y no mucho más. Mix entre reggae y pop (el que lo quiera disfrazar de punk es un irrespetuoso con el género) y alguna balada.
“White Reggae” is right.. yikes.. Message in a Bottle still slaps, but the rest is whatever (and I love Sting).
Helaas maar half af kunnen luisteren, zitten leuke liedjes op
10/10 drummer. Guitarist v good too. Cut Sting out of this and it might get a five.
Bra skiva. Har hört klassikerna men inte så mycket annat. Välbalanserad och lagom lång, behaglig att lyssna på. Mycket bra trummor och bas. 3:a
Very repetitive and kinda boring in my opinion.
Just not a fan of Phil Collins voice. Piercing. Good progressive rock music though.
69/100. I like The Police and I think they produced some good music over the years but I do not always find their full records to be exceptional. They have a unique way of blending different genres but some of the deep cuts just do not have the same songwriting strength as the singles.
Surprisingly mid, tbh.
Perfectly fine new wave album, not that great, hadn't listened to a lot of police before, nothing super exciting.
5/10
takes me back to chikdhood
Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Some good stuff in there by the boys in blue.
Not a big police fan but didnt mind it, please no more though
Great album
few songs i really enjoy, not sure how to rate these. hmm If i rate objectively, all albums will get at least 2 stars. Then again, I suppose there's no point of trying to objectively rate them, since they're already on the list of the best albums of all time.. It would only serve to showcase my idea of what a good album should be (which means fuck all, and would be seen by nobody), rather than how i FEEL about it. Since the thoughts I've written on albums so far has been completely based on personal enjoyment and feeling, I'll make the star rating reflect that too. 1 star - didn't like it at all 2 star - meh 3 star - pretty good 4 star - pretty great 5 star - personal fav why did i even write that I know how star ratings work
I've never thought The Police were bad (except for ¨Roxanne¨) but I just can't stand Sting. He's basically the Bono of New Wave.
Enjoyable, but not without some missteps.
This is a good album that starts strong with one of my favorite songs.
Drums and guitar are cool, but everything is getting a little repetitive, especially the lyrics. not bad just not my type.
A few well known songs that were good, rest just a bit average.
Mixed bag, but there is definitely an underlying groove running through some of the tracks
2.5 stars - got a bit bored. Might be better on a relisten
7/10 contact
Good album for supper. But if you listen only and do no other thing, it seems to have a 40 minutes song. The sonority a repetitive.
Not that great
Well aware of the classics, but the rest was a bit underwhelming..
message in a bottle, reggatta de blanc fajne i walking on the moon, reszta w podobnym stylu w miarę git, trochę monotonne tho
It was fine.
ACAB except Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. To be fair, I quite like The Police (the band) and there's plenty on this to enjoy, especially if you prefer this band in their more fun, looser era. Few too many reggae bits for me and String's singing is often utterly horrible to listen to. This man is a bad singer. Great musician, bad singer. Stick to tantric sex. Anyway, the hits on this are absolute elite level pop songs. The filler is filler. I prefer the follow up to this but I'd stick it on again if the notion took me.
Muito bom, nostálgico
It took historical context for me to understand what was going on here. This is probably peak punk culture in the UK, and reggae is about to hit a long successful stride before its slump in the modern day. So, the appropriation of reggae? On an album basically titled white reggae? Punk essence is what makes it white? Half the time I feel like alternative ska could've been a thing here, but we were focusing on race. I find that a little disturbing. As far as the music goes, it's perfectly listenable. It's got influences I appreciate in a watered-down lemonade kind of way, so it works great in the background. I've never really been a fan of the big singles on here, and repeated looped listens didn't change my mind about that. There's some cool things happening with the bass real often, and the pop-punk feel they bring up is nice. Hard to hate, but there's nothing for me here to love, either. 3.2/5
Apart from, 'moon' and 'message bottle' found this album quite annoying.
Solid 3.7. Not quite a 4
Meh album. Not a fan of the general sound or Sting’s voice
More so 3.5 it was decent.
Não me puxou, apesar de ter uma ou duas músicas sólidas
Familiar with the Police, but not best friends with them. That being said, I really enjoyed this album. Tight group. Sometimes I feel like new wave can sound a bit trite, but they make it a bit more exciting with their heavy use of reggae grooves. I was surprised by "On Any Other Day", it felt a bit out of place. I enjoyed it nonetheless... 3.5
Average at best once you get passed Message in a Bottle
Good
Great drumming and a unique sound but it does get a bit samey
Message in a Bottle was so deeply overplayed on the radio stations that my parents used to listen to that I was somewhat predisposed to hate this. Stings faux Reggae accent is somewhere between offputting and outright cringe at times and that's reaaaaaally hard to get over. That being said, overal its pretty okay. The New wave influence is honestly more then I expected and the highlight here, and I really liked "Walking on the Moon". I just reaaaally cannot get over the accent appropriation. I really want to artistically like a lot of this, it sounds good, its just SO hard to get over. The content is a 3 but my comfort level is a 2.
Message in a bottle 7/10
Yeah a good listen
7/10
The Police, both the band and the weaponised arm of government, are appealing more and more to me as I age and accumulate assets.
Good
I like the way the police combine reggae with rock very unique. Not a lot stood out to me specifically though
Not in my chords, but it still relevant today. I admit, i listen to it very superficially, but i can't pretend to digest a single album in one day, especially if it's a good one
"Message in a Bottle" is excellent of course. "It's Alright for You" is pretty great too. Otherwise, it's... Fine. The accent appropriation is a bit weird. As is "On Any Other Day". But the album is mostly fine. I'm largely pretty ambivalent on the Police. They have some great songs, I like the music... Wouldn't likely listen to them regularly.
6/10. Fav Tracks - Message in a Bottle Fun sound however I much preferred "Synchronicity" from The Police. Message in a Bottle and some others are obviously classics however I think the risks they take in later projects absolutely pay off more than this album.
teve uma hora que eu não sabia se era rock, pop, ska, reggae ou paralamas. baita disco.
Message in a bottle is an all-timer, but the rest kind of blended together for me
Never really heard the Police before, other than their big 3 or 4 songs. It was fine. I'd call it a pleasant surprise. Nothing very life-changing, pretty generic, but I have a feeling it was other bands copying them more than the other way around. Really enjoyed the titular track.
Can a white boy speak a little patois? Message in a bottle is a really good song and the rest was okay. I like Zenyatta Mondatta a lot more.
Police are just one of those bands. I like a lot of their stuff. I do. Deep cuts as well as singles. But then they'll have moments that I just HATE - repetitive, purposefully annoying, agonizingly pretentious. So I'm caught between really loving about half of their catalog and hating about 10%. Regatta De Blanc fits that nicely- some great moments marred by some horrible ones. THREE STARS
recognize the quality of The Police and I’ve always listened to them, but I’ve never been a big fan. While I love the overall idea of reggae rock, it doesn’t quite resonate with me the way it should
Same as the other Police record I got. Great singles that have held up. The rest is disappointing filler.
I wasn't sure what to expect since I haven't really cared for the Police songs I've heard on the radio, but I ended up enjoying this album. Not quite as much 'reggae' as promised by the title, but that ended up being a good thing.
This is not my favorite Police album but if you want to hear a trio of musicians at their peak here it is. Half this album is incredible- some of the best music ever recorded. If you would like to hear some of the best plumbing of all time, it is also cute. Anyone that does not list Stuart Copeland as one of the top Summers of the 80s, if not ever, check this record out. The same could be said for Andy Summers and Sting as well. Unfortunately this band is the greatest example of excellence when following the lead of one particular songwriter. There is nothing wrong with Stew’s songs but when you put them up against some of Stings they are weak. Anyway: 7/10
There are some high highs, but most of the album doesn’t live up to how good those moments are. But the highs are REALLY high. The best songs were Message in a Bottle, On Any Other Day, and Does Everyone Stare.
Similarly to the other album by the band that features on this list - "Synchronicity" - "Reggatta De Blanc" is for me a curious case of an album of very high highs and quite boring lows. As far as it's normal for each album to have outstanding songs interwoven with less memorable pieces that act as a kind of filling, when I listen to The Police I don't really want to listen to those "between" songs. "Message in the Bottle" or "Walking on the Moon" are classic songs that went straight into my "Best of" playlist, but I didn't care much for most of the other songs. I guess it might deserve a bit more love that I gave it, I feel a bit unfair giving it only 3, but it is what it is.
I liked the majority of it
Enjoyable listen but wasn’t a stand out for me sadly. I did enjoy the reggae influences but Stings forced Caribbean twang was not for me. Favourite song on this one was Bring on the Night, liked the rhythm of this one
Man I thought these guys were better than this Message in a Bottle’s pretty good, Walking on the Moon’s alright, but everything else ranges from mediocre to just weird. I do think it was a little better on my second listen, there’s really nothing truly awful about this one. Sting’s vocals are pretty hit or miss; when they work it feels like no one else could sing that part but sometimes they just sound off. Other than the bass which is pretty solid I feel like the instrument work just isn’t that special. Yet again a case of “it’s not awful, but I know they can do better”
Solid second serving from The Police. Google Translate indicates the title has no meaningful translation. Wikipedia suggests it means "white reggae." But that's ok either way, because the album has good tracks up and down. Message In A Bottle probably the biggest hit, but Can't Stand Losing You and Walking On The Moon are two of my favorite Police songs. Bring On The Night another great one. In the post-punk and new-wave world of the late late 70s and early 80s, The Police ruled. Unbelievable that they carved this large a path with just 5 studio albums. Reggatta de Blanc as an album is a solid listen, but only a handful of great tracks. Probably 3 1/2, but not quite a 4...
This album from The Police is solid, especially considering it's just three dudes making a consistent wall of sound on several tracks. Stewart Copeland's drumming is tight, and the whole rhythm section really ties everything together. But let's be real. The album's got its issues. A bunch of tracks feel like they're not quite done cooking and give the impression they threw in some demos to fill space. On the album's length, it kills the momentum created by the most solid tracks. "Message in a Bottle", for instance, is a great song which passes the test of time. That intro riff? Still catchy as ever, even after all these years. Only issue? It opens the album and from there on you have this feeling of sliding down with no song catching up to the level of this intro. Did I need to hear this before I die? Yeah
Classic Police. Some big bangers on this album, poppy rocky with nice guitar and bass. 7/10
fun!!!!
Love the lyrics, love the styles choices Favorite track: Message in the Bottle
maybe too ancient in its own right for me to get it, goes into reggae territory in Bring on the night, which is cool, because I love reggae. pretty alchemical, but in some ways insufficient.
41#
A lot of sophomore slump happening on this one, but a few high highs!
Not bad, not exceptional - a couple of good songs
This was a pretty odd album. On the one hand I grew up on these guys a little, they spent some time in rotation when I was just getting into music. But on the other hand there’s some weird shit on this album. Like it’s fun but it just left me confused on what they were trying to do a lot of the time. Not bad though, still a good time. Favorites: Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Does Everyone Stare
This was fun. Wouldn’t reach for it again but I enjoyed it enough
groovy
- Sting sounds like an ahole - I don't believe his refute of the rape allegations (of a 15-year-old) against him. His bandmates have sued him, and this quote, "Sting has easily cleared hundreds of millions of dollars in his life, but he said he wasn't planning on leaving much of it to his children because he fears that the money would just be "albatrosses round their necks." "I told them there won't be much money left because we are spending it. ... They have to work," he said. "All my kids know that and they rarely ask me for anything, which I really respect and appreciate." Dude is worth, like, half a billion dollars, and wants to spend it all, and not on his 6 kids. Yeah, you don't need my support. - The two hits are still enjoyable. - The instrumentation is tight, with everyone doing some interesting experimentation or clean riffs on the other songs. And, great drumming. - When he's in his range, I like Sting's unique voice, but when it's too high, it gets out of tune. His singing totally ruined "Bring on the Night" and "No Time This Time", and the Jamaican affectation on multiple songs was cringe. - The songs can feel kind of half-baked (seems like the right word for white people appropriating Reggae)/unfinished - it's like they never knew how to end the songs. - The album definitely felt too long - it lost steam after "Walking on the Moon". Hate "On Any Other Day". And what's with the homophobia? Also disliked "Does Everyone Stare".
I love message in the bottle as much as the next person and any other day is a fun song, I haven’t heard before, even though there are some gems on here like sad songs along with bring on the night I think it’s just OK perfectly middle of the road three out of five
These guys are severely overrated.
6.5/10
"On Any Other Day" really reminded my of Nirvana's "Lounge Act" (just not being so overplayed that it makes my ears bleed.)
Not my genre but fun 80's if you're in the mood.
Its fine I guess
It's got that classic Police sound, even early on. Sting's vocals are the star here. There's something about it that does keep it interesting, and you can definitely hear how they were starting to find their groove. It's OK. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Message In A Bottle - Bring On The Night - Walking On The Moon
erm... was hoping to like this more than I did. The two big hits are great songs. Most of the rest had a lot of pop but just weren't all that good.
Pretty ok, a few classic Police songs but everything else is just fine
I dunno hey
regardless of the clear reggae influences during the first half, it took some interesting and dynamic turns from the second half. it's a high 3 for me
listening to the vinyl while crafting so i can't say i'm paying much attention but it's alright i guess
nunca habia escuchado un disco de the police. mi tema favorito fue deathwish
Decent BPM, but pretty flat. Walking on the Moon and Message in a Bottle. Also I'm not a huge fan of skit tracks.
Message in a Bottle is classic!! I didn’t think I’d like this album though but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely would listen again.
Ahhh yes the guitar hero bop. Very *mysterious* sounding Its alright for you is catchy Also, "Limp wrist, tight fist" should be a queer slogan and available on a tshirt. Lol I thought they were saying "does everyone smell the way i do?" Random intermittent reggae vibes STOP THE ALBUM TITLE MEANS WHITE REGGAE Idk its a good time but not my fave. Solid tho
Think I preferred this to Synchronicity, starts of with a blinder with Message in a Bottle. Some of the post punkier songs are cool but a lot of this didn't feel cohesive, and some of Stings vocal performances were shit
Some great songs, some that aren't my fav. Love Copeland as a drummer
🎧This is a 2 but it’s got Message In A Bottle, Bring On The Night, and Walking On The Moon. So it’s a 3.
The police again!?!
Wee woo wee woo Now THATS what I call the police
Okk jee, mrzi me da pišem bilo šta sad, editovaću za godinu dana. 3,5/5
Respect što su probali da umešaju rege - ja lično ne bih nikad to radila - ali su izveli to na jedan od boljih načina. Doduše, ništa me nije oduševilo. Deathwish mi se jako dopala, eto toliko. Više volim druge njihove stvari 3,5/5
6.5/10
Strong start, Lil sameh through the middle. Sun day licks. Odd Vfx
The lyrics and melodies get a little repetitious at times, lacking the sophistication of Synchronicity, but still good.
Good but dated
It’s just wildly inconsistent. The highs are high but man, the lows… Really hampers my enjoyment of the album.
Enjoyed more than I was expecting. Opens up with Message in a Bottle which is my favorite Police song so that doesn't hurt. Still find Sting's vocals hokey but the musicianship otherwise is solid
Not horrible, the Police always repeated too much of their songs for me to fully enjoy.
Message In A Bottle 5/5 Reggatta De Blanc 3/5 It's Alight For You 3/5 Bring On The Night 3/5 Deathwish 3/5 Walking on the Moon 3/5 On Any Other Day 3/5 The Bed's Too Big Without You 3/5 Contact 2/5 Does Everyone Stare 4/5 No Time This Time 3/5 Overall Album 3.18
Unique sound, of its time but some great tracks
A frw classics, enjoyed listening
I listened to this about a week ago now. I think it was ok. But I don't really like Sting. Sorry.
Try hard artsy.
This was a hard one to rate for me, the Greatest Hits of the Police featured HEAVILY in my household growing up, and I was ready to love the album tracks I had not heard before on here, and whether it was a case of the bar being set too high but was left still loving the singles but not too much in between. Message In a Bottle is a firecracker of an opening and one of my favourites of theirs generally, but alas.
Yay! The Police! The hits really hit, and on the whole I liked how there was sonic cohesion throughout without getting caught in the samey-sameness. Other than that though, not a whole lot to write home about.
this was ok! not the biggest fan of this sound but more exciting to me than some recent entries
cultural appropriation???
