Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Had never heard of this band before, and it was a pleasant surprise! Fun and catchy throughout, and will definitely listen again.
No wonder Damon was jealous...this record is an absolute stonker from start to finish. I’m ashamed I wrote them off as a 1-hit at the time, because this band did everything well. Don’t believe me? Spotify followed this record up with Buzzcocks so take it from THEM. Sometimes you should believe the hype.
Great new wave/garage sound. Really liked the tempo of the whole album.
I liked this a lot. Shame they only made two albums. 4 stars.
Oi, kiva ylläri taas. Ysäriltä näitä kiinnostavia bändejä riittää. Propsit kahden minuutin biiseistä, rullaa mukavasti levy läpi. Ehkä 3.6/4 eli 4.
Poppy post-punk with a splash of grunge - sure, why not! I didn't pay too much attention to them at the time, but I must have been exposed to the album once or twice because quite a lot of it seemed familiar.... and I don't just mean because they're blatantly stealing from Wire and the Stranglers, heh... Fave track - "Connection" - is that the one from Trigger Happy TV? "Line Up" is a good opener, and "Vaseline" has its place, too...
Cool album. Nice punk/grunge but not overly harsh sounding, which sometimes I feel punk can be.
Nisam očekivao taj žanr, pravo mi se svidio
Based off the cover art I unpleasantly expected some 70-80s raging punk. Although the punk-influences are undoubtedly audible, this album greeted me with at times very melodic Britpop, which I much prefer. Honestly this was all and all a rather good album that deserves more popularity. Waking Up, 2:1 and S.O.F.T. are definite high points for me.
Prefs: Line Up, Annie, Connection, S.O.F.T., Blue, All-Nighter, 2:1, See That Animal, Stutter, Never Here, Vaseline Moins pref: Indian Song
They rock. No way around it. Connection is the jam! Then Hold Me Now takes it up another notch. They sound a lot like the band Garbage, and that's a good thing. Garbage clearly has to cite Elastica as a founding influence. 2:1 is an instant classic. Great album!
Oh I forgot about Elastica! I had this album! Car song still my fave ;)
Fast-paced with some driving bass lines. 7/10
My 90s crush
I was thinking of giving either a 3.5 or a 4 but finally the material earned these 4 stars, I really enjoyed the melodies and vibe.
A punk album with excellent songwriting and a personality to match. A few songs could have been cut, but otherwise this is a damn good record. Favorite Tracks: "Line Up", "Annie", "Connection", "Car Song", "S.O.F.T.", "2:1", "Vaseline"
Nice
This holds up surprisingly well. 15 songs fly by in under 40mins and I recognise more of them than I’d expect.
Loved it, might be a 5 album on a re-listen. 90s alternative/riot girl with a little Britpop
Ah Justine Frischmann, how you were everyone's secret crush. And how Elastica kind of sprung out of an era with a different sound and it still doesn't sound aged, which is lovely. It was never great music, but who doesn't love Connection?
fairly good, probably dated better than most of the non oasis/blur/pulp britpop scene stuff like carter the unbearable sex machine and menswear. it's a shame that the only legacy i can think of for the 3 women with a bloke on drums is The Corrs.
Simultaneously edgy and catchy. Swagger, sneer and energy. Top brit-popping. Roy Hodgson on cocaine.
I really don't know what to rate this, because if I'm being honest I think there were only about five words on this album that I could understand. Extremely listenable, though.
Liked Connection and Blue
never heard of this band or album. i've heard the song "connection" before but I am trying to place where. dug this album, 4 stars.
Yes, it's derivative, but carried off with Panache, great, fun album
Really liked this.
Punkrock leuk
Classic Brit Pop
The kind of music that flows nicely into my ears, very good album. Pretty nice discovery.
Rock alternativo. Muy bueno. Temas pegadizos.
I enjoyed the all/most women aspect, and i thought it was a fun album to just jam out to.
...a few bars into the opening number "Line Up" and listening to the 1/4 note vomit sounds i'm wondering what the hell is coming next... I loved this album - there's such a typical mid-90s sound to this, vocals mixed so low you have to strain to try to pick out lyrics but i *love* that - makes the vocals an equal instrument in the band - additionally the sweet harmonies put a lot of these songs over the top. And there's more unpredictability than I'd thought (having only been familiar with their US sorta-hit "Connection") - the strangely-non-imaginatively-titled "Indian Song" (likely based on the musical modality of the song?) was one of the surprises - "Blue" is another killer. Another small point is that these songs for the most part are so short they don't have time to get repetitive. Done! Off to the next one... Really enjoyed this. 7/10 4 stars
Female leaaaaad, hell yeah. Line up smacks. I really like this. i like the half talking half singing thing. CAR SONG lmfaooooo !!!! S.O.F.T. i love. same with waking up. this is something i will listen to again
Justine frieschman saunters in, makes her feelings clear and leaves, saying goodbye in the most perfectly bored pop voice.
I like this record. Had never heard Elastica. The only thing I knew about this band before listening was that the singer dated Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) in the mid-late 90s and they did a lot of heroin together. The heroin and their breakup helped create the environment where Blur's most interesting music was written. This 1995 record is great. It actually has some similarities to Blur's work from 94-95, which isn't a big surprise I guess. I really like the opener "Line Up," and I think the intro to "Connection" has been sampled a lot. That song is really great and it bumps this record from a 3 to a 4 for me.
Fun punk-esque album.
I really liked this album, it had a such a cool sound. I love the britpunk aesthetic a lot, and I appreciate the influence this had.
Really good. Fun. Great writing.
9/27 3.5/5. Lot of quick and catchy songs, pretty enjoyable. Standout Tracks: Line Up, Car Song, S.O.F.T., Waking Up, 2:1
Pretty good listen, and it did some interesting things. Favorite track is S. O. F. T..
4/5
Still fun to listen to.
Loved this album when it came out and it holds up very well 16 years later. Okay, so one or two tracks are possibly plagiarised (I Am The Fly being the obvious example) but it was all done in the best possible taste.
Absolutely love "Car Song" for some reason. Really liked most of the songs.
Elastica never had the footing of the big 4 britpop bands, but this album deserves to rank among theirs. Heavily influenced by post-punk, we see it combined with the bright alt rock that britpop is known for, along with an excellent production reminiscent of synth-heavy New Wave, creating an identity that is strictly Elastica.
Great rock, veering right on the edge of the "punk rock" label. Energetic rhythms make this one a breeze to listen through; it's nearly 40 minutes but doesn't drag for a second.
pretty good grunge record. kinda like a pop version of garbage.
Enjoyed this one
First time listening, was a good time. Great harmonies throughout. Simplistic but effective riffs. Favourite track track would be Indian song.
I like it a lot. Gonna get quite a few listens I think,
Track one: Hey! Not so bad! Track two: yeah. Picking up nicely here.... Track five: ...sold.
Another album that I loved as a kid. Thankfully I think it has held up quite well and I could still really enjoy it. If you wanted to stick a pin on indie brit rock/pop, then would be the album. Great variety on the songs, some thoughtful, maturre lyrics and virtually no filler
Feels very reminiscent of its era, which isnt a bad thing to me. Every song felt like it could have been on a THPS game
Wow, this was such a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of this album or this band, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Was right up my street and really enjoyable to listen to. There was no filler here. A cohesive album full of great songs.
I don't know them, but based on the first few seconds of the first song I think I'm going to like them. This album is exactly what I needed this morning. It's the perfect mix of punk and grunge. I'm sad they only had like 2 studio albums now that I've looked them up a bit. I liked this one. I'll give it a 3 or 4.
super good, a solid 4. This could come out today and it would be great.
Owned this one way back in the day. This should be an interesting re-listen. Expecting a healthy dose of nostalgia. Hearing a lot of similarities with the band Self, who I would listen to a lot 4-5 years after this album came out. I remember this being sort of a "guilty pleasure" back in the 90's... probably because it's a "girl band." Listening now makes me want to smack myself - this holds up well. I'd love to hear more of this kind of release today with male OR female leads - short, catchy punk songs that are still palatable rather than just noisy. Hearing major Pixies inspiration behind "Waking Up" - probably lots of Pixies influence throughout the album, but it just now hit me. Fuck, this is really good. How many other albums did I casually listen to in the 90's and then forget about (or write off) that are legit classics these days?
A solid punk album. High energy, roaring guitars, and biting vocals. There's some great melodies on this and it bops the whole way through. I don't think the production is as grand as an album like Celebrity Skin, but this hits the mark for me. Favorite song: Stutter
Awesome alt-rock, punk influenced album from the 90s
Another great punk album find from 1001 albums, good stuff.
Great album.
While this record is a bit uneven, Stutter is one of the great songs of the 90's. I cannot stress how amazing this song is. My pubic hair uncurls every time I hear it.
Before this, the only Elastica song I knew was that one from Trigger Happy TV (which turns out to be 'Connection', track 3 of this album). I expected this to be generic 90s Britpop fodder, but it is much better than that. Heavier than expected and nice riffs, rhythm and melodies. The album whips through 15 tracks in 38 minutes, which (apart from a lull at track 8, 'Indian Song', which could have been dropped) keeps the interest and the energy up and doesn't allow time to get bored. 'Connection' and 'S.O.F.T' my highlights, but there is plenty of good stuff on here. I like this a lot and slightly regret missing it at the time, but doubt I'll be motivated to revisit now. 4/5.
Spoko, kojarzy mi się z New Young Pony Club
Waking up is the COVID anthem.
Very solid and enjoyable album.
Me gustan más de lo que debería.
Really a 3.5, but I really like the riffs and the female singer. Some great hooks too. Would be great to see live
Yeah, pretty good. Got a lot of mileage out of grungy guitars for a non-grunge band.
Wow! They were not on my radar but I liked this quite a bit. I was hearing Blur in it, so interesting to find out that Justine Frischmann (lead singer) dated Damon Albarn for several years in the 90's. Found this very easy to listen to, makes me want to listen to their other stuff too.
A favorite in high school. Love the energy. Enjoy the playfulness in some of the sonic touches and phrasing. Fun with an attitude. At times danceable rock. I must say alot of this was has stuck with me after all these years. I feel like Indian Song is a bit filler and makes the album lose some momentum. One thing I really do enjoy about their sound is the prominent bass.
Really interesting and fun
I'm feeling the fun and energetic post-punk sound, this Aussie gives it four snags at the barbie out of five.
Pretty good. Catchy and good background listening.
Pretty cool album, I need to know more. It sounds definitely like the 90's and I like these kind of vibes.
Another brit-poppy 90s album! I really enjoyed this one, and I feel like it was a lot more sincere then Garbage. I'll probably give it a few more listens over the coming days honestly!
ouuu I like this one. Added to my music instantly.
A super solid album all the way through. Thoroughly 90s, but with a lot of 70s punk elements also mixed with some electronica. 4/5
false
Only 2 songs available of the album on Spotify.
Underrated by the masses, under player by me!
The album is perfectly fine and serviceable music and that’s about what I can say about it. Always happy to have more women on the list but I found it fairly indistinguishable from other like Riot Grrrl and grunge bands. Certainly isn’t bad at all and I didn’t dislike it but I found myself wandering quite a bit and it became background music very easily for me.
I remember a few of these song from my youth.
Connection was really fun, hadn't heard that in forever. Played it a few times. One of those "Oh yeah, that's this band?" moments that you get on here from time to time. This was better than I thought it was going to be, but still probably wouldn't return to it. Glad i listened to it, thought it was cool.
Linda bandita punk, post punk. Entretenida, album divertido para pasar el rato. Buena representación del género. 7/10
A female-fronted alt-rock band with some punky/grunge elements. Album was pretty good- enjoyed it overall but no huge standouts.
Ihan hyvää ja menevää rokkia. Aina välillä tulee vähän outoja biisejä. Eka biisi on ihan hirveä.
I don't know the context behind why this project is included in the 1001 albums to hear before you die list, but I do know that it is pretty significant to see an almost entirely female fronted Britpop band as that was pretty against the norm for the genre. I also found this project to be super gritty and full of both Punk and Riot Grrrl influences that I think really helped Elastica stand out on their debut project. This project is perfect for any sort of 90s enthusiast like myself and helps turn a pretty simple and sometimes formulaic sound of Britpop into something much more memorable and interesting. There isn't much to say here, the songs fly by and feel like a breeze and the music itself is solid! Sometimes the simplest projects yield the best rewards because they get right to the point.
Decent 90s Brit pop album. I remember Connection when it came out. Just learned that they were hit with plagiarism charge for that from the Strangers, who funnily enough I just listened to two days ago on this list. I hear the resemblance, but I dunno. Seems different enough too, I mean it's like two chords. Anyway, decent, not sure about memorable. I always thought they were a one-hit wonder. Connection is a great track though. 3/5
Lots of short and punchy songs. Didn't hate it or love it. Would listen again. Kinda started to lose me towards the end since a lot of the songs sounded similar. Review: 6.9/10
Has not aged well. Still some good stuff.
I had never heard of this group. This album was 90s fun and I had a good time. I'll be coming back soon for another listen and checking out their later work too. Another win for the list.
I wanted to like this more than I did. It was good but didn’t hit like X Ray Spex or Le Tigre did for me.
I liked this a lot. I was not into this band when they were out but was aware of them due to having heard "Connection" on the radio and MTV. I am not a big britpop fan and less of a historian so I don't know if they count as a band in that movement but this is well done and at 38 minutes does not wear out its welcome.
Fun to get nostalgic with this one.
Sympa mais pas marquant, intéressant que ça soit presque que des donzelles
This was pleasant but not groundbreaking, to me. Might revisit. But yeah, just okay.
Not britpop. Very good though
This was a fun 90s alt rock album. I remember some of the tracks from MTV. There was nothing standout here, but definitely fun to listen to. Hits nostalgia just right.
The good here is found in the several melodies that are pleasant and catchy, and in the interesting arrangements that pop in here from time to time. Negatives are that it's a lot of the same structure and tones, which starts to wear on you quick. Neat album, but nothing special.
Gave this one a few listens through and enjoyed the sound overall. S.O.F.T. and Waking Up caught my attention with their intros and lyrics. Overall a pleasant album from a band I had not previously heard of.
unfortunately fell into genetic rock to me
3.25
Diferente, bom
yep. my musical nerdry told me that justine, the vocalist of the band, is the ex of brett anderson, one of my favourite rock musicians. i love him so maybe ill dig what his ex is doing. also i kinda get why they are not that famous in the britpop circle apart from the reason that im already getting tired to talk about (y'know, sexism and all those bullshit that heavily traumatised me (its the problem of the radical feminists who have cyberbullied me, not mine) and stuff). its because their music is just mid. 3.5/5
7/10
Seems like all you need to make this list is a loud guitar and a cool frontwoman... what’s next, Echobelly with Sonya Aurora Madan? Don’t get me wrong, this punchy 38 minute hit of ’90s post punk is a blast. Justine Frischmann has that it factor, and tracks like "Connection" and "Waking Up" are catchy, and full of raw energy. It’s that perfect mix of edgy alt-rock and pop that makes for a fun, quick nostalgia trip. The big problem for me, though, is how derivative it is. It’s hard to call this an "all-time great" when it’s so clearly recycling riffs from Wire, the Buzzcocks, and The Stranglers. The bass is crunchy and the attitude is solid, but it feels a bit creatively bankrupt.
One banger the rest is good enough.
better than i expected.
Definitely heard some songs on soundtracks before. Fun alt rock, punky vibes.
Better than I thought. 3.5
All i could hear after reading that review was them playing in the background in some random movie
This is the best British, female-led, post-punk, grungy band I've ever heard! For all the caterwauling about how they ripped off the Wire (I was familiar with the keyboard riff but not with the artist), I gotta say after listening to both, this is a marked improvement! Justine Frischmann sounds great, and the short, high-energy tracks kept my attention. I particularly enjoyed Stutter, and I wish the Spotify version of Connection had included the vocals to match the scrolling lyrics. Don't know if I'll come back to this, so 4 seems a bit high.
I should like this in theory, but it’s just so … vanilla? Boring? Also, was this band that important? Sounds like a lot of their contemporary stuff, which is probably why it sounds so generic. I’ve been thinking about going back through my 3 star al albums and actually deciding if it’s a 2 or a 4. So here’s more homework
Didn’t mind a bit of Elastica back on the day. Enjoyable to listen to again, but not one that will get regular rotation.
Number: 148 Date: 05/31/2026 Artist: Elastica Album: Elastica Year: 1995 Style: Post Punk Familiarity: None (1) Rating: 3 Before: ======= Yet a nother unheard of. That make 4 days in a row. Absed solely on the album cover and band name, seems like this shou ldb eright up my alley. We'll see. During: ======= I do like this type of music but sounds like it could have been made in the early 80's so not sure what is so speacial about it seeing how this was done in 1995. Anyways, I'm only 2 songs in now, so let's hold off judgement for now. But about song 2, aka Annie. This sould a lot like Blondie, to me. Now on song 3, "Connection'. Look like it's the most popular song on the album with over 45 million steams on Spotify. After : ======= Totally generic. A solid 3 from me. 3 my personal rating 2 suitability for this list 1 impact ----------------------------------------------- 2 composite rating
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Nothing earth shattering but it was fun to listen to.
This isn’t my preferred style of music, but I oddly didn’t mind it. Better said, I kind of enjoyed it. It was rock with a punk vibe to it and I got into the grooves of the songs. Connection was the most recognized tune of the album but others were enjoyable as well.
Brit pop with a punk vibe. Better than I remember, but something is off with the version of Connection spotify played, not the original which is unfortunate. Decent album overall.
This was pretty solid 90s rock. Nothing crazy but not bad at all.
Long ago I owned this on cd but never really listened much. It’s pretty catchy and poppy and I enjoyed it but nothing really stood out.
Fun 90s vibe, kind of middling for the era but still a good listen.
I enjoyed listening to this again
Базовые девичий хей хоу летс го
Not a bad little album I wanted to hate it but I liked the punk songs
Peak gym album
Connection
Prima
Prima postpunk, maar weinig interesse om vaker te luisteren.
Possibly the most forgettable album on the project so far. I’ve listened at least three times and none of it has left a trace apart from jangly guitars. Not even annoying enough for a 2.
Pounding but mundane
Muy de meh pero al menos rompe la norma de la lista Nota: 3.4
Not pretty, as it should be for its gendre. I feel it would be better live in a garage than on an album.
meh
Female grunge 95’
Brought back memories
Solid album. 3
Ah, this brings back some memories. Is it female led Britpop or pop post punk. Doesn’t really matter, it was good then and it’s still pretty good and holds up today.
60/100. This is a solid minimalist blend of Britpop and post punk that sits comfortably between those two styles without fully committing to either. The songwriting focuses heavily on young adult life, touching on casual relationships, nightlife and frustration. The album works well for what it is.
5/10
It is so unremarkable that I cannot be bothered to think about the mark or a comment to say. Next!
A shame this gets lumped with the rest of britpop as it is more of a female led post punk album in a similar vein to Blondie or Sleater Kinney. That said, it isn’t up to par with them and fairly forgettable. The songs were too similar and, ‘connection’ aside, I can see why it hasn’t really been retained in the public consciousness.
Pree good
Elastica were mostly a one trick pony, but it was a decent trick. They fizzled after the second album and probably went at the right time. An English take on the riot girrrl movement with a touch of sultry sophistication and the odd Mark E Smith growl. Love the guitar tone - high gaing but with great definition. A solid 3.
Fun, and interestingly jarring guitar licks.
I more than passively liked this! Nothing earth shattering here but a decent listen. 3.5/5
Solid 3/5.
Decent but didn't grab me a ton! Felt very middle of the road-y rock. I think I had only maybe heard "Connections" before? Enjoyed that one and "Car Song" the most
Don't remember it that well, wasn't offensive. 2.9/5
It was very... okay?? It was both good and bad in its own way. Pretty cheesy but if you forgot about that for a few minutes it was a pretty fun listen.
For some reason I had it in mind that this would be brit-poppier, rather than the punky sound it has. Its kinda just meh for me, but the last few tracks I think are kinda stronger than the start. 3/5
It's pretty good, but doesn't stand out too much and is a bit inconsistent. Would have been better without the softer moments.
Didn't grab me but short songs, good energy. No complaints..... Another 3, sigh. Can't quite stretch it to a 4.
Well now I hope Pink Flag is on this list. I'd never listened to this whole album before. It's good.
2,5
A decent rock album. The songs do blur together a little, but the guitars sound good and it doesn’t waste your time.
A couple great songs here, and the rest of the album is pretty good too.
Reminds me of the 90's. I was never big into Elastica but i remember the tunes
3/5. Elastica seems to get thrown in with Brit-Pop due to the era of British music they came up in, but I’d say they have a lot more in common with the British punks/post-punks of the 70’s. The album itself is a solid time but nothing too special, there are a few highlights though like “Blue.” One of those albums where I had a pleasant enough listening experience but don’t see myself revisiting it in full.
It’s not bad and some of it is kinda catchy.
Unoffensive but unremarkable. I don't know what else to say.
Enjoyed this one, some throwbacks to new wave but with a heavier sound that I thought worked well.
This didn't feel that special. Its 90s girl punk rock in an era where it was more of a revival than something very new. It was overall fine, but not my favorite.
alright
New wave, short songs, breeders Connection Stutter
Good, but doesn’t really stand out. 3.5
A 90’s rock album that wasn’t very 90s but was very much rock
Wow, this is a blast from the past. I always love seeing women represented on this list. This is a fun album that feels very 90s and is therefore nostalgic. Yeah, it’s a little commercial, but there are some good songs here and I like the overall vibe. “Connection” is a legit banger, and I had totally forgotten that track existed.
Another 90’s band I remember hearing about but never really listened to them. Not bad but not much on the album I would want to listen to again.
Ok
Unironically not bad
À réécouter! Bon! 2:1 et Hold me now!
This is a perfectly fine 90's alternative rock album. I thought I only new one of their singles, but it turns out some of these tracks appear on soundtracks I'm familiar with. So, not something I'll likely ever reach for on my own, but also wouldn't turn it off. 2.5/5
eh, it was ok
Sharp, quick, and kind of over before it settles in. It’s fun while it lasts, just not that deep.
Meh.
nice enough
Catchy punk-pop! Sounds effortless. However, some songs sound a bit repetitive. Would revisit when cleaning the house or needing an energy rush. Favorite songs: Slutter, Blue, Connection
I was hoping for more. Overall, a solid 90s album. I definitely would have purchased based on Connection alone. And then I'm sure that other tracks would have grown on me over many relistens. I bet I only come back for the single. Connection
Line Up - 7/10. Mid-90s Alternative Rock. Annie - 5/10. Too short, felt abrupt. Connection - 8/10. I like this one. I think I've heard it in Ted Lasso. Car Song - 7/10. Slick guitar work. Solid tune. Smile - 5/10. Again, a bit short and abrupt. Hold Me Now - 6/10. Good. S.O.F.T. - 7/10. Again, pretty good. Indian Song - 6/10. Good use of Indian themes and feel. Blue - 5/10. Not bad. All-Nighter - 5/10. Short and abrupt. Waking Up - 6/10. Solid. 2:1 - 6/10. Nice. See that Animal - 5/10. Meh. Stutter - 6/10. Good. Never Here - 7/10. Good alternative rock. Vaseline - 6/10. Good, but short. Overall Rating - 3.03/5 (6.06/10). This sounds very much like its time period. Good guitar work, good bass work, solid music.
Between 3 and 4. 2:1 is so gas
Nothing bad to say about this album. It has some great sounds especially S.O.F.T. and one of the albums most aligned with my taste. However, there's nothing I really loved about the album either and probably wouldn't return for another listen. Maybe it'll grow on me...
Apparently, not all Britpop blows.
Decent, but like a lot of these albums unmemorable.
Solid album that sounds very like 1990s britpop. No surprises I guess. Connection a GOAT.
I didnt listen to it all, couldnt muster the enthusiasm. Unfair to judge it so split it in the middle
It's okay. Little bit tame, little bit lame. The steady rhythms and 90s bored-sounding vocal make me picture the women off Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer. Like they decided to go rogue and make their own songs. Quite liked Indian Song.
I like this much more than Blur or Oasis. Really distinctive sound.
I like Britpop but I dislike punk and Post-Punk. This is a very confusing mashup.
Really wanted to give this a four, due to nostalgia and the fact I still believe Justine Frischmann to be the epitome of cool. But couldn't quite bring myself to do it. Musically the album is pretty un-nuanced, the lyrics are idiotic and it's too self-satisfied. 2:1 is a cracking song though.
Its a good 90's pop punk album, only spoiled by the number of tunes that blatantly ripped off other artists. Mind you, there's nothing new in art except talent.......
Good to listen to again
Solid and deeply 90s. Connections is a banger for sure
Kinda sounds like a cross between new wave like Blondie or the Pretenders and American indie rock of the period like Scrawl or Archers of Loaf? They're best known for "Connection" partially taking the riff from Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba", but it also sounds a bit like Liz Phair's "Supernova" to me. Anyway, this feels like something that should be right up my alley, but despite what they say, the vital connection isn't made here for me. The sound is just about right, but the I'm not really impressed by any of the songs. It's perfectly fine and I couldn't fault anyone for having it as a favorite album of the period, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
*Cool alternative female fronted 90's band *Like many 90s bands- can slip into generic sounding tracks as many sound similar
I hadn't listened to this in close to 20 years and it's much better than I remembered. Still, I'm not sure I would ever need to listen to it again. It's fine, nothing to write home about.
When this showed up for today, I was excited to listen to it. I've heard Connection a ton of times and it's a cool song. Just wasn't sure what the rest of this would be like. The short answer is "more of the same, but a bit worse." Connection is the best song on the record, to be sure, and while there isn't anything inherently wrong with the other tracks, none of them really stand out either. Makes for a pretty average album. The sound on this is cool, but it's not terribly outstanding.
3.5
I absolutely love the track 2:1! It appears on the soundtrack to trainspotting and automatically earns this album a solid 3.
I wanted to like this more
Not my mood
Sorprendentemente no estaba mal.
Brit-poptastic!
Great 90s alternative album
A pretty decent album with some good songs on it, a standout for me was ‘Smile’. Not much to really say on this album it was good, didn’t hate it but it didn’t present anything super special. Sounds sort of similar to Blondie, its generic rock but makes good background music.
Aight
3.5/5 good punk sound female lead
an album with great style, energy, and a unique synth-indie rock sound.
Lying somewhere between Blur and Blondie (which is a pretty good mix if you ask me!). Brilliant lead vocals and really crunchy guitars. This album sounds great and has a couple of bangers on it, but maybe doesn't venture very far from the core sound.
I have vague recollections of this record playing at a few alcohol-fueled house parties in the mid-90s, but I wasn't really into it. It was a tad too pop-ish for me, and time has only slightly changed my opinion. It's still middle-of-the-road and derivative, like a Frankenstein monster made of bits and pieces of every successful band from the early 90s - a bit of grunge, a bit of punk, a bit of Blur and The Breeders... Nothing really stands out except the main hits (Connection and 2-1, which are pretty good), and I'm not sure it's memorable enough to deserve a place here. That being said, it has aged quite well. The singer is not bad, and there's a real post-punk energy in some of the tracks. It's not something I'd go out of my way to listen, but it makes for good background music with a hint of nostalgia. 5/10
Not my thing at all. It really sounds the same-ish to me and quite derivative; feels like I've heard this type of music a million times before. Shocked to read that most people did enjoy it; seems I'm just in the minority here. 5 / 10
This wasn’t bad. I guess I don’t mind post punk if it’s delivered in poppy two-minute chunks. This is an album worth hearing.
not the best thing ever, but not bad. Annie was good.
Line Up and listen to this one.
Oikein mukavaa popahtavaa mitä muuta, no ajoittaisia muita genrejä. Muijaenergiaa!
meh
An entertaining album that, for me, just misses the mark of being outstanding. The first “post-” anything I've heard that isn't terrible. 3.5/5
some good songs, aber jetzt nit special. 3.5.
This is a good album that I never think of. 3.5 stars
Favorite Track: Annie
Lovely grungy stuff
хуй знает что это такое, будто из рекламы мтв в 90, но пойдет
Very classic 90s girl power rock stuff. A couple of standout bits, but mostly very samey. Enjoyed it, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen again.
Je l'ai écouté 3 fois et je m'en rappelle pu trop mais je crois que c'était pas mal
Cetait plutôt cool, certaines pistes me rappelaient les musiques qu'on peut entendre à la radio dans les sims
If you'd told me that this was the side project for Chrissy Hynde I would totally have believed you. The album is OK. It has AC/DC levels of musicality with flourishes of creativity mixed in here and there.
Didn't know much about them except that one hit song (and even that I wouldn't have been able to name the band). Like other bands of this era that I have recently discovered, I tend to enjoy the songs that don't sound quite so 90s. Don't know how Nirvana was about to do it but their music walks a very fine line of sounding very 90s and timeless at the same time in a way few other bands (Elastica included) have achieved. That being said, the less 90s sounding songs raised the level of this album for me.
Standard 90s punk
Cooooooorect
Interesting
nice safe short pop album
Decent punchy British 90’s indie
3/5
I was expecting a wreck with this one. On paper it sounds like nothing I'd be into. I hit play, and the first track wasn't so bad, but nothing beyond '90s pop-punk. This effort is saved by those very basic punk influences, a low bar to pass but it's executed correctly. Arguably very well produced, lead vocals fit really well for the genre, but in my opinion the overall energy is also on the boring side. I gave it a good few listens to see if anything would stick any better. The mood on it fluctuates, never feeling any better than average. 2.8/5
6/10
I like this style, but it is a boring one from the genre.
Some fem punk I can definitely get down to, but it's not really anything I haven't heard before
Inte illa, men väcker heller inget.
такая пародия на нирвану с женским вокалом, не впечатлило, но не плохо
I was pleased this made the list given that Brit Pop is underrepresented on this list (maybe 10 lps by the big 4, this, Supergrass, Ash, plus Urban Hymns and Everything Must Go and that’s about it.) It’s a fun album that made a big splash at the time. I think Elastica like a lot of that era, work better on an ep or a radio session - brief immediate and insistent. It was the last great hurrah! of the single after all. Sleeper are in the same territory but have aged better. And Salad gave an Anglo- Eurotrash take that remans thrilling. Yes they owe a debt to Wire. Even at the time that was obvious. But do do Minor Threat and Big Black and they’re lionised. However I’d like to make the case that this is a more groundbreaking record than we give it credit for. This is the first Strokesified album. 6 years before Is This It? Established the formula of taking an old sound, crank up the loudness, use modern technology and a cool modern Gen X front person Elastica did that to post punk. It does for Wire what Silent Alarm did for the Gang of Four. Yet Bloc Party, Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Leon, Libertines, Arctic Monkeys etc never received the same backlash for following the formula. I guess the 9Os found repackaging old music less palatable than the 00s.

Huge fan of "Stutter" (that song slaps) so found this pretty enjoyable but how come nobody talks about how similar "Connection" is to Romeo Void's "Never Say Never". Favorite: Stutter Would I listen to it again: Probably
Like the singer. Better rythm
Not bad but the guitar sound became a little bit tedious
At time of listening, their biggest hit by far (Connection) is inexplicably missing from this album on Spotify and is instead replaced with a karaoke version with no vocals. Just a heads up to anyone who may be confused! On the album as a whole, this is good! I really like the punky energy. There’s lots of nice grooves in here, and the guitars have plenty of punch. Lots of short songs, but with some impact. 3.5 rounded down.
Some people want this to be this hidden masterpiece but I just think it’s a fun album that doesn’t touch the greatest bands of the genre
It's alright, but I really can't justify this one on the list.
Good britpop
It was almost precisely one of the two things I expected. It wasn't keyboard electonica, but it was a bit better than I thought it would be. Now this is the difficult bit. It wasnt quite as good as a 3, but definitely better than a 2. Ok 3 it is.
This was a fun listen. I definitely enjoy this style of pop-punk a lot, and I wasn’t familiar with Elastica, so I’m glad I got a chance to check them out! Nothing really hit as a song I’d like to add to my “favorites” play list, but I could see myself putting this on in the background when I’m cleaning or just hanging out at home, and wanting to listen to something more fast-paced.
Never heard of this band before but the album was ok.
Actually really enjoyed this one. Probably gonna end up being one of the better britpop records on this list. I found too much of it samey to really praise the album, but it’s still a fun, high energy album.
passive
first listen it's fine
Really good stuff, listened beyond this album and they got better! Will definitely check out more of their music!
Pretty not bad! I want to tune out and let it blend into the background then something striking starts playing. 3.5/5 almost a 4!
Still underrated Brit-pop, even though someone put them on this list. Unexpected classic rock vibes sometimes.
Line Up Connection Car Song Waking Up Stutter
When this record came out I was very anti-Elastica. But I think I was in my Coil phase at the time, so you don't want to have to trust then-me's judgment about Elastica. So, my impression 30 years on? I still find it pretty annoying, like most of these songs felt like blander versions of other bands' similar music. Technically they did a fine job, but by the time I was 2/3 of the way through I started wishing it would end. But "Stutter"'s good, and a couple of the other tracks were ok too. So, 3/5
I listened to this a little as a teenager. Love the single but the rest of the album is just ok. The britwave movement felt a little like Alex down after the downfall of nirvana
This album starts pretty well. I was familiar with Connection, Line Up's a good opener, Annie reminded me of Blondie and Car Song has a cheeky little riff. However, as much as I've complained in the past about over-long songs, here the opposite is true. More than half of the songs are under 3 minutes, a lot of them are under 2. Just when you start getting into a song it ends, and it's frustrating. I'd have liked to hear a bit more of Indian Song and 2:1, and I'd have preferred a minute and a half less of Vaseline. Of The later songs, Waking Up stuck on my mind for it's similar riff to No More Heroes and Never Here, which has time to breathe, is suitably angry. It's all very Punk, but as I drifted towards the end, I could only question why I really needed to listen to this, and I couldn't come up with an answer. A low 3.
Uudenvuoden kunniaksi lottokone arpoi kolmosen kakkosen sijaan. Kyllä sieltä kuitenkin pari biisiä vähän toimitteli.
Derivative as anything but still better than almost all Britpop.
Didn't know the album, hell, didn't know the band. Not too bad.
Liked ok.
Sounds like generic background music in a movie
Monster bass sound on the first track! I would love to know how they got that sound!!! I feel like the third track is used in a lot of TV commercials or something. Definitely heard it many times before. Very catchy guitar part. Overall, these guys are covering well tread ground but doing it very well. I bet they were a great live act. Cynical/disaffected British singers always get me going and I could listen to just the sound of this bass guitar all day long.
I'll admit that I don't really get the whole Britpop thing, nor why exactly this collection seems to want to trace every nook and cranny of its seemingly short-lived life. But this post-Suede band/album seems like a more interesting choice than some of the other Britpop jetsam, and it's nice to finally have a name behind that incredible 90s ear-worm "Connection". (Interesting too to have Damon Albarn feature in various tracks as "Dan Abnormal".) The rest of the album is fine, and while there weren't too many other standouts besides the very catchy "2:1", I appreciated the admirably brief tracks with no filler; plus some truly odd videos for "Line up" (quasi-Peter-Gabriel stop-motion) and "Car song" (some sort of weird Tokyo-ghostbusters-themed storyline). I also appreciated having a largely-female band that seemed to be focused on making an impression by the strength of their music and lyrics.
Sometimes they've got a good sound, as in "Connection," which makes up for the weak lyrics. Other times, not so much.
This was a pleasant surprise. Fun punky album that reminds me of Pink Flag. Maintains that 90’s alt-rock style while using its influences well. Songs don’t outstay their welcome. The real instrumental highlight here is for sure the bass. These lines are sufficiently chunky and make excellent backdrops. Favorite songs were Line Up, Connection, Smile, Waking Up, and Stutter.
Enjoyable 90’s punk album
Some good tunes
Cool
Great, another forgettable English band from the 90s.
This channeling of new wave and pop punk was a great breath of fresh air when it arrived in ‘94. Ear candy and really well made, but not best album calibre imo.
Layers of plastic tube.
A bit of a curio these days between Frischmann’s subsequent musical/career choices/tastemaking, the Wire/Stranglers lifts (later repeated with more Wire and The Fall), and the speculation about just how much input Elastica had from “Dan Abnormal.” To that end, my sense has always been that Frischmann had a great sense for simply what worked, be it in the early days of Suede and Blur or here, picking Donna Matthews, and on The Menace, so borrowing from Albarn might’ve been just as plausible as Wire. Dude was on an all time run, it’s hard to think that didn’t result in contributions, credited or otherwise. Whatever the authorship, Elastica is a rip smart, sharp collection, still as cool today as in britpop’s hey day. It’s a bummer Frischmann quit music.
Album No. 0086 on my list. "Elastica" was something completely new to me to be honest; I had never heard of the group before - not even sure why, I guess I should have been aware of them before. Anyway, I appreciate an all-female band on here. I found this to be a solid album. Nice poppy post-punk stuff, solid noisy sound. I'll add "Connection", "Car Song", and "Never Here" to my playlist and have the feeling that I'll enjoy listening to the album more often in the future. It's a narrow decision between 3 and 4 stars. Because I'm really not sure, I'll let a coin toss decide. Well, and it's 3/5 stars.
surprisingly good
Decent, if not middling and generic, punk rock. Songs started out somewhat avant-garde and became less interesting as the album progressed, but most songs were brief and moved onto the next before each became boring.
average at best
Was it British? Check Did it come out between 1985-2010? Check Then Robert Dimery thinks you must absolutely hear it before you die. At this point how many albums would have to be removed to have the list be called "1001 British Albums that came out in a 30 year stretch that I liked" This was a band with a hit single and then when I listened to the rest of the album it didn't stand above anything else coming out in that time. It's not bad but it's not really something that should be on the list
Surprisingly good record. Back then I heard nothing but Connection and it took me 1010 albums to get to this gem of mid 90's alternative rock
Reasonably fun and crunchy, but not quite sure why it's on this list. "S.O.F.T." was my favorite.
I thought I would like this more but maybe I’ll have to listen again, I can see it growing on me. I liked car song, all nighter, Indian song, others were forgettable - between a 3 and 4 - I’ll come back to some songs but not others
Good, but that's about it. I can see how this might be beloved by some, but I didn't feel like there was much essential about this, and while I wouldn't mind listening again, I don't think I'll be thinking about it a few days from now. Faves: Connection, S.O.F.T., Blue
Band and album where all new to me. Sometimes reminds me on the band "Garbage". With elements of grunge and punk. I enjoyed it. Not easy to decide between three and four stars. 3,5
Perfectly fine britpop/rock album. My biggest complaint is the best songs are the ones allowed to breathe - every song that is under 2 mins would totally benefit from being stretched a little more to developed a bit more. Still there are things to like here, but could've been a lot better overall. Top tracks: Connection, S.O.F.T., Never Here
Pretty good lesser known Britpop with an indie bend. The female vocals also make it stand out in what was a notoriously male-dominated movement. Is it essential listen? Not really. But it is an interesting curiosity. Key tracks: Connection
1001-A continues to expand my girl rock chops ✅✅✅ S. O. F. T.
at its best im all about it, i just had a hard time with the vocals, especially in the early tracks
