Reviews (page 10 of 14)
It's a solid album, but it's an absolute crime that AM isn't on here instead.
this is the platonic ideal of a three
Vert underground band
This was slightly better than I expected. While I enjoyed it, I'm not sure I'd ever actively want to go back and listen to it again though. 3.5 stars, rounded down.
Halfway through and it's solid fun listen so far - nothing that blew my socks off, but still very enjoyable Ah hang on I just got to Riot Van and the juxtaposition of music and text is just outstanding
I bet you look good on the dance floor is 5/5
Lowkey good, nice guitar, tvfta isn't the best but it's nice
Too intense all the time
arctic monkeys classic, 7/10
fine
I don't like this album, it had its moments but it's not for me. I can see some people enjoying this but it's not for me. I can give this a solid 7/10 or 3/5. I'll give another shot sometime later and update this
ouvia muito quando tinha 15 anos, favorita: mardy bum
I always wanted to stay away from Arctic Monkeys out of I don't know what. It's fine. A pretty decent album.
Я думал, что мне совсем не понравится, но было довольно неплохо. Местами даже блюзово.
Good opening, average Arctic Monkeys.
It has all the ingredients of good Arctic Monkeys album (like Favourite Worst Nightmare) but they just don't fall into place for me
Liked the little I heard at the time, but never investigated furher. Youthful indie rock, but rarely takes off in an interesting way. Of course at the time, was great to have a massive guitar band around. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: No: 68/275 (24%) Will I get: No
Bastante bien el disco de los monos del ártico. Nunca había escuchado uno completo, tampoco una canción de este disco.
Cool.
There was a period when my child was small that I was kind of disconnected from most of the music scene and what was considered "hip" or "popular." This was during that period. I have a big blind spot for a lot of mid-2000s debuts. It may be unfair to blame my kid for it - I was listening to music then, just not NEW music - but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Anyway, all that is to say that I know the name Arctic Monkeys but had never sat and intentionally listened to them. This is decent. I probably would have been a fan back in the day. But again, you know... the kid. (lol)
Gibe knappi 3 blauarsch paviane in Norde
These guys are something of a blind spot in British indie music for me, as they hit it big not long after I left Britain for the States. They are one of those bands who I knew intellectually were a big deal within the scene they were in but never got around to listening to. Now that I have, I'd describe them as being the Sheffield Strokes. This is especially noticeable because Alex Turner's accent is very prominent throughout. The songs on the album are a bit samey, and occasionally veer into less-belligerent Oasis territory but the album's overall a fun listen even if I wouldn't seek it out.
Strong second half in my opinion. Mardy Bum best song on album
It's ... fine. I've listened to other Arctic Monkeys albums and to be honest they all sound the same to me. That being said — "When the Sun Goes Down" always slaps.
Great album
I get why people would like this but it just isn't for me. This evokes no emotional response out of me other than distaste for the lead singers voice. I cant 2.5 this (why wouldnt there be half stars?) so 3 it is.
very classic mid-aughts garage rock
I feel like maybe you had to be there? This was a 2 for my own enjoyment, but I feel like album wise it’s a 3.
that's a good album, very British, catchy punkish garage songs, it's raw, it's energetic, but not mine, i prefer other music
Great
A touch samey but there are some real bangers on here. Some I didnt realise I knew already!! And some unexpected musical creativity hahaha. However, yet another solid 3.5 star album. Gonna round down to a 3 in comparison to my other 4 stars, which I overall find less samey
FAVOURITE SONGS: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Fake Tales of San Francisco, When The Sun Goes Down 6/10
It's safe to say that I am quite familiar with Arctic Monkeys, however this is one of the albums I've actually never given it a full thorough listen to. Some songs that I have in my liked playlist before the full listen: I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor Mardy Bum When the Sun Comes Down Songs that stood out after the listen: Mardy Bum Currently, I'm into very melodic songs with a catchy chord progression and lighter instrumentals. Tomorrow even, I could be in a mood where I want to hear heavier guitars, so any other song from this album would seem more appealing.
Mardy Bum me recordó mi adolescencia, porque es la más tranqui del album, fan de la guitarra en casi todas las canciones; when the sun goes down buena igual al igual que certain romance. para ser el primer album, creo que no me aburrí
Just not moving the needle
Hasn't aged well. View from the Afternoon is still incredible
idk why its on this list
The past 3 albums before this one I rated at a 2 or below so this one, with it's raring guitars and unique singer voice, was breath of fresh air.
- Like the UK street vibes - Not necessarily my favorite - Enjoyed 'A Certain Romance' as a closer, also liked "Riot Van" - Some pretty good allusions
The first song does not remember me of Artic Monkeys at all, but the guitar is very good(also in the second song) All the three first songs remind me of "ain´t no rest for the wicked" band San Francisco got me on the choir part Fouth song made me realise that is the singer that is giving Lucifer vibes Is weird to think that i didnt knew this album until now YOU PROBABLY is probably visionary Jesus still taking us home even if we know nothing I think i already heard something similar to RIOT VAN(but i liked the story) Red light is interesting Nice story and a different sound from the others on Mardy Bum When the sun goes down is my favorite, but swear Love it from the ritz to the rubber, i think is generic(but not in 2006) and nice at the same time Time at the beach with a certain romance and very good|nostalgic finals riffs "i love you like an alcholic" type of lyrics
Nice pop.
Really liked this album back in the day. The filler is filler, though. 3.5/5
mmm, in my opinion is a little bit bored, but the people love their songs
Solid album, although some of the songs sound incomplete. Crazy this came out 20 years ago, I remember at the time thinking rock was making a comeback.
Mardy Bum is the best song on this album and its not even close. the rest of the songs blend together for me, but this song was the standout. added it to my beach/boat playlist. good guitar and percussion, dont care too much for the vocals but this was fine. 6/10
6/10
3 or 4 good songs but the rest is very samey.
My goodness, the vocialist is so British. The sound is so fresh and raw, and I'm really glad it is on the list. Although the sound isn't really my style of rock, I can appreciate it massively. ALSO, THE POLICE MENTIONED!!!
buen álbum, pero nada del otro mundo un rock normal sin nada q destaque o lo haga especial, siento q al ser su primer álbum todavía les faltaba una identidad, gran voz la del cantante
Zone out a bit. It's aight
Enjoyed it, but no individual songs really stood out. Kind of surprised this album made the list
Standouts Fake Tales of San Francisco
very punk era!
Didn't stand out much for me Nothing inreresting or unique going on I'd probably listen to it while studying.
I never liked this band that much. Album is all right. What more is there to say about those Arctic Monkeys?
Ta bien, sin mas
get on your dancing shoes you sexy little swine
Nothing special, but I liked it fine
I remember this album getting a lot of good press when it was released. It’s catchy guitar-based indie rock, full of hooks and energy, and sharp lyrically. My recollection was that the critics tended to think that it felt fresh when so much of rock music, at least the stuff in the mainstream, at the time sounded turgid. Twenty years later, it still sounds okay, but I assume that this was added to this list soon after its release, because I don’t sense this album had much of a lasting impact. There are plenty of other things from around that time that sounded somewhat similar (the first thing that comes to mind for me is Ted Leo and the Pharmacist’s The Tyranny of Distance) that I think are far better. But that’s always the problem with basing these lists on the opinions of music critics.
The record is ok, I have listened to it once in a while over the last decade, but somehow I never return to it. I think the songs are just not enough my thing.
Has really great hits, then the rest is just English slop.
I mean it's quality stuff. It's just not really my thing
Ehhhh... I dunno. I wouldn't ever choose to listen to this sort of thing, but it wasn't bad. Pretty meh for me.
FK
Oh he be noticing things
Decent debut album. Repetitive after a while which doesn’t help with picking any standouts from this album.
seems cool but i dont love their accents
Not for me. It’s not bad
It sounds like what it is- a, admittedly tight, young band who are just getting started - it certainly has energy but it is rough around the edges and lacks a bit of subtlety. A couple of songs stand out melodically but, barring their age, I’m still not quite sure what all the fuss was about.
I’m scoring this generously as I do struggle to like much of the album but hard to articulate exactly why. I remember when these blew up as it was one of the first experiences I had of a band emerging from the blogosphere that I didn’t get the hype around. I find it kind of sits somewhere between some of the angsty raucousness of a band like Yeah Yeah Yeahs but without the energy, and safer radio friendly art rock of Franz Ferdinand without the hooks and doesn’t really commit to a lane enough. Never particularly enjoyed Alex Turners delivery, particularly when he does that staccato thing that has become something of a hallmark of their sound. Overall, it’s surprisingly bland.
A bit boring but not a terrible album. Unmistakeably the Arctic Monkeys. 2.9/5
I think I'm biased against them because I never liked them growing up, so it was hard to give them a chance. Some really catchy songs
I actually liked this album better than I thought I would. Prior to this I was not a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys. However, I enjoyed this album.
Brings me back to my karaoke days…
If Jack White was British
i can appreciate this musically but i have just always disliked alex turner’s voice and lyrics
Some fun tracks. Probably won’t listen to the whole album again.
This is a good album. I'm glad I listened becuase it really has more range than I expected.
Not my cuppa, but a competent debut
It's okay, I guess.
I am a true slut for 2000s indie rock, and even then I have never been able to get into the Arctic Monkeys
97. arctic monkeys debut
I like the instrumentation. Lyrics need getting used to not really my style
All the songs themselves are fine and even interesting at times. Unfortunately they do not compose a solid thoughtful whole. Tracks like "Riot" and "Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But..." or "When The Sun Goes Down" are great standouts that feel bogged down in a swamp of similarity. An album full of great ideas lacking in interesting production, depth, and comprehensive vision to take it to the next level. Moments of greatness shadowed by my feeling of boredom during the listening experience.
It's alright. A bit too British for me
7/10 i ain’t into this kinda stuff but solid album
Classic Arctic Monkeys album.
J’ai pas trop la voix radio, sensation trop lisse
Favourite Songs: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor Still Take You Home
6/7
Definitely a band that chases genres, but that dance for song is catchy as hell it’s been in my brain overall I’ll take that the rest of the songs are solid, but don’t really need them. Just give me a dance floor thank you, sir.
I listened to this once before on a bus from edinburgh to dundee. The worst person you know loves this album. Great if you want to listen to a 19 year old with way too much ego ramble about clubbing, fighting and pulling girls. Cant deny it does sound class though
It’s alright. Bet you look good on the dance floor stands out above the rest. Not sure it deserves a spot on the list though.
ana noted to me that because it's sung in her accent, i might be one of the few US listeners who can actually understand what the lead singer is saying, and you know what? i could! completely intelligible to me lol. did i like the music though? now that's a whole other question. it's completely fine. to me every song sounds the same. it's a fine sound with a good aggressive energy, but it's the same sound for forty minutes, and that's about it. toe tapping at points but not something i'm liable to seek out because it all blurred together.
Jaaha
Ihan sujuvaa menoa yhdeltä indie rockin the bandeista.
↑: Riot Van, Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But... ↓: Dancing Shoes, A Certain Romance
-I really did not understand the hype around this band when this album first came out. Maybe if I was 5 years younger, this album would've excited me, but this sounded like played out, watered down post punk wannabe music to me at the time. It kinda checks the boxes of angular guitars and disco drum beats, but sands down the edges of everything that made bands like The Fall, Gang of Four, PIL, etc exciting and daring. -That being said, they almost won me over by the end of the album upon relisten. I get why this music has *energy* behind it and they were probably a good live band. -The instrumentalists are all mediocre EXCEPT the drummer, who is shockingly good. -Overall, this is fine. I really don't love it or hate it.
"I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" was a moment of cultural excitement back in 2006. The music video was what really sold it. It looked like it was shot on an old VHS camcorder (a genius move by the filmmaker), with an intense live performance by a group of young lads rocking out. It almost felt like you'd stumbled across some punk rock band that you'd never heard of on a compilation of the best of the 80s from "The Old Grey Whistle Test". And of course, the song was amazing too. It was raw and simple, great rock 'n' roll brought back to its purest form. The excitement was huge. It had leaked all over the internet before its release, but that didn't really mean much back then, as we all torrented our music in those wild pirating days. Arrr. But we were all dying to hear the full album. When I did hear it, I was a bit disappointed though. It was decent enough, but not mind-blowing. And, frankly, it was a little hard to get through at times. A lot of the songs leaned more towards The Libertines "likely lads" sound than the punk rock garage band the Arctics hinted they could be. Definitely not matching the highs of "Dancefloor". The lyrics seemed very juvenile too. I know that's kinda the point: to reflect the experiences of youngsters on nights out, and all that. "From the Ritz to the Rubble" was the other song that I really liked from this album. But paying closer attention to the lyrics, it's essentially just a gripe about a bouncer not letting some dude into a club. I'm pretty sure I wrote similar lyrics when I was 16 or 17, annoyed that I had to go home early because a bouncer on a nightclub realised that I was obviously underage. I'm not comparing anything I ever wrote to "From the Ritz to the Rubble" musically of course, but their lyrics aren't too far off the absolute inane rubbish I used to write when I was an angry teenager, sent home early on a night out. I might be coming down a little harshly on this album, because it is decent enough in spots. "Ritz" is a great song musically. "When The Sun Goes Down" is decent too. But for everything else, I almost find myself hoping it'll wrap up soon. I'm probably being harsh, knowing what was to come for the Arctics. They were about to pull a Kings of Leon. Yep, Alex Turner started to listening to so much Richard Hawley that he thought he WAS Richard Hawley. And, spoiler alert, he wasn't. Arctic Monkeys changed their look and their sound to something that was more Sinatra-esque crooning than garage punk rock. A blander, beiger, watered-down sound. There was a moment of serious cringe, when Alex made a speech after receiving a BRIT award. Hair greased up in a Buddy Holly-esque quiff, he lumbered about the stage like a child doing an impersonation of an adult. "That rock 'n' roll, eh? That rock 'n' roll, it just won't go away. It might hibernate from time to time, and sink back into the swamp." The fact that Wet Leg quoted this verbatim in satire when they received their BRIT award always cracks me up (almost as much as it did Hester Chambers on stage, tittering behind her hand like an anime cartoon character). Rock 'n' roll did go away for the Arctic Monkeys. They came in so strongly with "Dancefloor", but then quickly sank back into the swamp. But something much better came out of hibernation: bands like Wet Leg, not the Arctic Monkeys.
Aguante los monos articossss
I liked this album. I had never knowingly listened to Arctic Monkeys, I did hear several songs that I had heard before. Overall, I enjoyed the whole album, lots of energetic songs - which I like. Some songs much more than others. It was a good album and I would listen to it again but would not go out of my way to listen to it. So I don't think that I would want to own it, hence the 3 star rating
I'm a casual enjoyer of arctic monkeys, but in smaller doses. Sounds all the same
You look good on the dance floor - classic banger Fake Tales of San Francisco - good rhythm and solo From The Ritz to The Rubble is a fun tune.
The sound of the era of rock never sits right with me but this isn't bad
Maybe this is what the cool hipsters listened to before stomp, clap, hey
Nor really for me. There are a few good riffs, but overall I didn't like it.
"When the Sun Goes Down" is great, my dad loved to play that song. The rest are fine upbeat "Post Punk Revival music. I do like "From the Ritz to the Rubble" and probably will like the album a lot more with more listens. 3/5
That was alright, a little bit same-y throughout, but I respect their musicianship
I'd heard this one before and its alright. Not a favorite of mine but its fine, I'm not a massive arctic monkeys fan really
Almost too rock and roll for me buttttt I found like 5 I enjoyed
meh
What if Franz Ferdinand, an echo of Gang of Four, and Oasis had a night on the piss?
Once you’ve heard one song by them you’ve heard them all and I got sick of them fast
I was so excited to hear this album I've heard a few songs over the years. By half way through the album, I had heard enough. They all sounded so similar. If you like their one sound, this is a great album.
I buck the popular trend - I just don't like the Arctic Monkeys. I get they're popular, but they just come across as cocky smart-arses and are generally annoying.
They speak sing. I don't like speak singing
1st song wow didn't know what i was expecting that first song is sum the chorus and bridge are so killer what a way to set a tone 2nd song feels and gives the vibe of dancing in a pub lol rn not feeling it but if i was drunk with a hot girl it would be life changing lol 3rd track just makes me wanna drive a convertible driving down California 4th song is a vibe but its starting to feel repetitive now same BPM and instruments and song premise 5th song was nice but im to adhd for this repetitiveness BPM instruments and song premise are all the same 6th i really dont think these are bad individual songs i honestly enjoy this bridge alot one of my favorites so far but the short guitar licks and stums are to much for me 7th HOLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY THIS IS WHAT I LOVEEEEEEEE a real slice of life in a song that just goes down like butter the intimate emotional delivery with a smooth baseline and beautiful chords 8th sounds so familiar idk if i heard it before but i love the guitar line du du du du do da love the lyrics so real but just a lil to distorted for me 9th most uniqe of the album so far and i love it its a mix of 5 and 7 I love the digestable rawness and how real and relatable it really is and just simply beautiful 10th I like when the songs are a bit slower like I'm honestly loving these song except for the repetitive distorted guitar just hitting my left ear ugh 11th oh yes this is how you build up and what i was waiting for love the pump fake love the bass line love the story easily top 3 on this project so far 12th the guitar line after the build up ooo the intro I'm going backwards but its really all just rushing oooo this one of the ones ik i just said top 3 but this one genuinely is giving me that swing type bounce the vibe is really catching me the most out of all the higher BPM songs 13th no. the intro i was not feeling at all like we already did this 10 times but now when we get into the first verse it just sets it all clicks and is super real the chorus is so sweet the delivery is amazing overall : I honestly am in love with certain songs like Riot Van Mardy Bum When the sun goes down A certain romance all those songs felt super relatable in a sense they are all unique to themselves unlike some other songs on this album but the second half really put a ease to my soul
Frenetic energy from the first note and it never lets up
Super repetitive ngl
Great vocals and grooves, smooth jumping sound. Something to look cool or feel cool to while you listen. Grew on me as the album progressed. Not the biggest fan of this style of rock, but I appreciate the rhythm and passion/clarity. Def some humor and wit in the lines as well. Some tracks def hit for me, 'from the ritz to the rubble' gave me this feeling. Can understand the hype/love!
solid indie pop, some herky-jerkiness, some splendid tunes, some melancholy and plenty of wry northern-ness
Eeeeewwwwww. Noooooooo. Ok, now that I’ve gotten my initial impression out of the way (never heard an AM single on the radio that I enjoyed) I have to say I liked the album much more than expected. The non-single tracks hold up. I wouldn’t have thought so until I was “forced” to listen to an entire album. Still not a fan, but their esteem has risen. 3.5/5
had more fun with this than i expected to
Welcome to the party Indie Rock.
A bit too poppy for my taste, but the talent and appeal is apparent.
It was ok, I actually like a lot of their songs but the album wasn't a standout for me.
50% bangerz 50% your mate's band playing a weeknight at the local
Yeah they have a few good songs
Was good but this kind of harder, faster-paced rock isn't my favorite genre.
A fun vibe and good energy. But... kinda got a bit tired after awhile into the album. So, middle of the road for me.
Started out really strong but got kinda old by the end of the album. He does some really cool things vocally but gets kinda loud by the end of the album. So close to being a 4 but not quite there for me
Meh.
Didn't mind it, quite punky but with more complex melodies, can see why they were so popular
Another mediocre record on this list. Did it get there owing to it's smart title, I wonder.
Solid entry into the dad rock canon. I wanted to get into it more but I can't justify giving this four stars. A good debut album but it will never be my go to. 3/5 stars.
Good album. More of a quicker rock that I am not used too. I liked the song, "When the Sun Goes Down."
Solid listen. Not something I would normally put on, but also wouldn't turn it off.
Similar to the strokes, better arctic monkeys songs out thetr
Liked 6 songs out of 14 and it was pretty ok.
1/23/26. It's okay. I prefer Suck it and See. 5/10
Don’t know how to explain it but it sounds cleaner and less like “noise” than some of the other albums. More refined and newer than 90’s music, but not as nostalgic as 80’s
I thought this was ok. His vocals started to be irritating. But not a bad album
I’m not sure Alex Turner’s voice is for me, mans is just so fookin british
This is a cool album but I can not fathom why they're so huge.
Everything about this reminds if the Strokes.(their first album) So British Strokes?! They have a nice punk sound, but not overtly. Decent, interesting songwriting but they all tend to sound about the same. Which is fine, I like their sound. I don't care for his singing voice but it works here. Part of me wants to give this a 4 but 3 seems about right. I am interested in exploring their catalog more.
Bored
Should be a dead cert, but it's only ok, and doesn't click.
I really wanted to dislike this, was expecting next to nothing, but was pleasantly surprised by generally solid music and vocals. Am I going to add it to my playlists? Nope, but it didn’t make me regret doing this either.
Good quality Britrock. Quite a few recognisable tracks. Dance Floor was the one I was most familiar with, but I also recall Mardy Bum and When The Sun Goes Down from the old Triple J days. The other tunes I wasn't so familiar with were all ok.
Not terrible, not great.
2026 = 2016 for real
Solid, no real notes
A fun little album.
Very nostalgic for me but, the songwriting is very one note
Above average but average none the less
It's not bad. I Just don't like it, personally.
Nulla di speciale ma mi è piaciuta molto Riot Van e ne ho aggiunte altre due, non il mio genere
solid early 2k rock! honestly maybe not the best artic monkeys record but had some highlights.
3.5/5, half the album was good the other half was meh
Het is ergens best vet, maar ik zet het zelf niet echt aan. Maar onbewust ken ik eigenlijk heel veel nummers gewoon.
I liked this more than I expected. When I read on Wikipedia that some people say the album concept is "the lives of young Northern England clubbers" my first impression was "eh, that sounds kind of boring". But it ended up being pretty decent.
*2006. UK alt. *I really want to like these guys, but I can only do them in small-ish doses because the music is just so frantic. *I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor is here. RATING - 6/10
more like the noisy monkeys
I like AM better but this had some good tracks on it.
I’m in the minority of people that think AM sounds like slightly better generic alt rock. This was slightly better than good.
Pretty good, although every song sounds kinda the same. It does have energy and pep. Just needs some nuance. Decent but could have been a killer.
Not really my thing.
Good vibes but sometimes a bit anxiety inducing. Would defo run to in the gym, feel good but when you listen close to lyrics some of them are a bit too vulgar
Like it
I enjoyed this album- but really preferred the more mellow songs. I enjoyed it more and more as I listened though!
It was good, just not my style!
Pretty great debut for a band that’s rather average on the whole. By the time I decided I’d heard enough and was ready to stop listening, the opening to the first track was just getting ready to start again, so it was the perfect length, I guess.
i came to it quite pretentious but it kinda grew in me while i was listening it... might come back later there are some good songs and i think it flows consistently. personaly a 3.5 for me
Good in general, maybe i could click a like button on some of those song. But i didnt. 3.5/5
Very lowkey and chill, could play while getting ready. I’ve heard a few of these songs before
Not my style
nice.
One good song, I prefer The Strokes!
Typical early 2000s indie. Not a bad album. Not great either
Recognized some
not for me, almost every songs sounds the same
Strong sound, excellent guitar work and the vocals are pretty good. Post punk, strongly leaning on the 70s punk sound. 3/5
não sou mt chegado em artic monkeys mas tamos la ne FAVS (top 3): still take you home, perhaps vampires is a bit strong but..., a certain romance mençoes honrosas: i bet you look good on the dancefloor, fake tales of san francisco, riot van, from the ritz to the bubble compraria o vinil: não bom!! não é um album que me dê vontade de ouvir completo e sequencial, mas de ouvir as musicas isoladas em momentos diferentes em uma playlist acho q fica melhor. mas as musicas sao boas :D nota final 3.5/5
Classic indie
i’ve heard this one before, i really liked it. absolutely class. liam.
Not my style per se, but easy listening. I’d have no problem putting this on in the background.
non il mio stile ma ben fatto
Solid album. Good band. Not my favorite.
Back before Arctic Monkeys became the global phenomenon they are known for today, they were yet another thoughtful and interesting edition to the Garage Rock Revival movement of the 2000s. I personally don't see this album up there with The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or even The White Stripes but I appreciate what Arctic Monkeys bring to the table as yet another project added to the very same-y pile that was this musical movement. The only real standouts for me are I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor which is still an utter bop and Mardy Bum, other than that this album was just solid and not a whole lot more. It is pretty standard and isn't even anything super out of the ordinary or special which really confuses me because of all the critical acclaim this album has gotten. It is pretty standard and that's about all I have to say! Nuff said.
Very punk rock and up beat. Giving Marauders vibes off of the first song. Can see the grunge-esque kind of teenage rebellion in the songs. Makes me want to walk into a dim-lit bar and have a toxic relationship with a girl in a band. it’s youth and rebellion in an album!
Classic
Pretty average rock album that is a bit overrated on here. Surprised by its high score on this site.
Hört sich nach dem 2 Stück besser an. Es ist ein mal schauen album... Und es ist so diverseStücke die eher rockig sind. Kaufen ja.. weil Geil
A lot of energy but it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. The entire album sits in the same energy space.
Het summum van indierockhits. Maar voor mij geen kippenvelmuziek ofzo
It was fine, my favorite on the album "A Certain Romance."
On the first listen, I will admit I wasn't paying much attention so I wasn't able to grab a full grasp on the art of the album. However, with addictive and energetic, fast-paced tracks all throughout the alb with its few slower paced tracks, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" provides an enjoyable listening experience with a rebellious personality.
Fun tracks but many sound very similar
Not bad. I like the grungy feel. made me miss Artic Monkeys.
Arctic Monkey’s debut album is a good addition to the Alternative genre. Unfortunately, the majority of the songs from this album have the same sound & rhythm, my two standout songs were the ones who strayed from most of the album’s sound: “Riot Van” and “Mardy Bum.” Nevertheless I appreciate this album.
A product of its time. Its alright, a couple of songs which everyone will have heard and are pretty iconic but overplayed at this point. The rest all just sound like generic Arctic Monkeys songs.
Expected everything to sounds like the I wanna be your vacuum cleaner song and it didn’t! Pleasantly surprised
I’ve heard a lot about this one. I know the history about the album cover and such, and I know a lot about the Arctic Monkeys, but the only album I’ve listened to by them has been AM. The opening few seconds of Whatever People Say I Am album is really good, with some fun drums leading to a catchy riff and a great bass line. Emphasizing bass in a song is something I really love so I already liked this. But, I will say that, in its whole, The View from the Afternoon is a bit of an odd choice for an opener. It has that pause in the middle, which really slows things down, whereas initially the track seems to be going for a more energetic, punchy feel. It’s not a bad song, it’s just an odd choice in the listing as a whole that I feel wasn’t a good choice. The second song, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, has a surprising punk opening. The first few seconds definitely sound like something out of Nevermind or maybe even a Minor Threat song, though the rest of it does slow down a bit. The third song, Fake Tales of San Francisco, continues the energy of the first two songs. It also has a really great storytelling aspect—which is something that’s pretty common throughout a lot the songs. The lyrics are really well-written. The build-up and sharp change in volume at the end of the song is also impressive. It’s the first truly dynamic part of the album. Dancing Shoes is also really good. It continues the energy with the lyrics, fun drums, and guitar solo. I actually think this would’ve been the perfect opener. It literally starts with a pop punk riff then goes “put on your dance shoes.” The melody on You Probably Couldn’t See is amazing, especially during the opening part where it has a layered sound to it. The riff on Still Take You Home is amazing. The opening sounds a lot like Dead Kennedys. They definitely wear their influences on their sleeves—the vocals are Jack White, the lyrics are The Strokes, and the guitar is a blend of punk and Brit pop, expressed through a garage rock edge. This album is an interesting bit of musical history, even without accounting for how they changed the way fanbases are built. Marduk Bum is pretty good. The riff is very addictive and adds a good amount of depth. The buildup with the drums and then the release into a solo-ish part that acts as a mirror for the riff is impressive and well-executed. Perhaps Vampires… has a very obvious Sonic Youth influence. Parts of it sound right out of Goo or Dirty. As it’s their debut, I guess they do lean pretty heavily on the specific sounds of bands that were inspirations for them—which is a very smart thing to do on a debut, when you’re not fully formed, but it also causes them to sound…well, not fully formed. They also definitely sound a bit like a British Fall Out Boy at times. I haven’t actually listened to Grand Theft Autumn, and if FOB did inspire Arctic Monkeys it would likely primarily be through that because that was 2003, but it does definitely sound a lot like From Under the Cork Tree, which came out the previous year—the lyrics about dancing and romance, the long song titles, the vocal edge, the pop punk-inspired riffs. From the Ritz uses dual guitars really well. That’s something that’s pretty consistent throughout the album, in fact—there’s a lot of great layered and call-and-response guitar parts that add a lot of interesting elements to the song. A Certain Romance is great. The opening drums are so fun, and the guitar riff made me want to look up the tabs. It also has this almost ska rhythm to parts of it that’s just really creatively done. And the ending is instrumental part is amazing. Recap: Favorite songs: Dancing Shoes, A Certain Romance Least favorite song: The View from the Afternoon Comparisons/Similar albums: Goo, Dirty, White Blood Cells, Nevermind, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, From Under the Cork Tree, Is This It Rating: 3/5
I will say that I'm generally lukewarm on Arctic Monkeys, but I enjoyed their debut here more than I expected to. While I mostly know Arctic Monkeys from the smooth, accessible alt/rock sound of AM, I did find some older stuff of theirs I like, in particular Brian Storm, which captures a fun, youthful, almost pop-punk energy that I just don't think their more recent work has. And I am pleased to announce that Whatever People Say I Am... is more like this older song. It feels fun, youthful and energetic, with songwriting to back the vibes up. I do think this album generally works best on its highest energy songs though, where it almost functions as particularly accessible punk. Some of the mid-tempo songs just don't do it as much for me. And while I'm talking negatives, the lyrics were kind of hit or miss for me. That being said, it doesn't put too much of a damper on things. Whatever People Say manages to be a pretty great time, even though it's by a band I don't love. And even if I'm not *convinced* that this is essential 2000s rock: it doesn't have to be. Arctic Monkeys throw a good enough indie weekend party that I can't really complain that they didn't move any mountains while doing so.
Good debut album, good sound, good vibe. Hard to be more detailed but it's a good listen. I should say good a few more times. Strong three, weak four.
Raucous and rollicking energy. Things slow down a little later on. You can hear the influences. I can see why people enjoy this, a solid production. The vocal stylings become repetitive, which is not uncommon with this style of music.
N-a
probably would have liked this better when it came out.
My world wasn’t shifted by it yanno
Sounded the same after 3 songs. Top song- you look good on the dance floor
Listen, I understand how important this album is in the wider context but it's just not for me.
It’s very British, beyond just the singer’s heavy Yorkshire accent, with echoes of Britpop's lad culture and even punk before it. The singer is a clever lyricist with a good flow, and the band is high energy and tight, but the music itself is not terribly varied. I like this, but I have a sense it captures a time, feeling and scene that passed me by.
Liked this more than I thought
Had heard this when it was new and the Next Big Thing. It's fine but doesn't really stick with me or make me curious about the rest of their catalog.
I listened to this album in April 2025 and gave it 2.9/5
This was just OK. Didn’t speak to me. Surprised it’s regarded as so great.
2.54
Something about Arctic Monkeys just doesn't do it for me. After one song I get the shtick, sounds like heavy music for people who don't listen to heavy music.
Better than expected but songs were too similar. Loved the long song titles.
I’ve heard the hits- let’s try the whole debut album. Yeah it’s alright. The vocalist seems to be a bit of a one trick pony. Lyrically it’s a bit tedious for me as well- all tales of English juvenile delinquency. It’s fine. THREE STARS
6/10… garage rock / post punk / *2006
Ugh, I want to like this more than I do, i just can't stand the noise. "Perhaps Vampires..." is a great example where i love the middle of the song but I have no desire to listen to this again because it just becomes noise. I love "Dancing Shoes" "still take you home" "riot van" "Mardy bum" and "A certain romance" but i don't really see myself coming back to this album much. Which I could give half starts
Reconheço várias músicas, mas nunca foi meu álbum preferido deles, apesar de gostar!
Nice album! My gen
Some good licks in here and overall a good upbeat vibe. I'm more partial to pre 2000s rock but this was a fun listen.
Not my bag. But can appreciate it
Liked this more than I expected to. Not enough that I’ll probably ever listen to it again, but I never wanted to turn it off or skip songs.
great background noise. Nothing catching, somehow easy to get through my readings while the band plays through
I have a few Artic Monkeys songs on my favorite list but none from this album. It's okay, nothing really stood out.
I liked the voice but no really a big fan
Yeeaahh, Arctic Monkeys. Debut studio album. It's solid, but mostly plain. I think it's a little outdated now. A lot of songs sound like Arctic Monkeys songs, not much expression and uniqueness in these songs, just the regular Arctic Monkeys sound. 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor — Mardy Bum — Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...
Garage/indie rock. Angular chord progessions amidst more standard power chord riffs. And characteristic vocals. Not bad actually. The style is decent and doesnt get old, but not overwhelmingly good. Best track - The View From The Afternoon, Fake Tales of San Francisco, Red Lights..., When The Sun Goes Down 3-4 stars
gitaar herrie, soms lekker
They're not a favorite of mine and I don't follow them but I do like their music and style. I've seen them a couple times, they bring it and are fun. I believe I have heard this album in full before. Very good. would not expect this one to be on a list like this. I want to give it a 4-star but I know the 4-stars and I personally don't think it;s that level. IMO
I don’t mind the Arctic Monkeys and this was fairly solid. Don’t know if it’s their best album, based on Spotify listens it looks like it’s AM (I definitely know more songs off AM). For a debut it’s pretty good and showcases Arctic Monkeys’ unique sound, particularly their unique vocals. Fookin ‘ell.
not bad, but mostly for 1 song.
On paper I should really like this album but in practice it just didn't do a lot for me. It was fun and fast paced but it just kind of went by in a blur. It felt like waking up the morning after getting pissed on a grimy British pub-crawl, which is the intent I'm sure. Favorite tracks were probably the first two "The View From The Afternoon," "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and "From The Ritz To The Rubble." It's a solid debut album, just didn't resonate much with me. Not the best but not bad, a solid 3.5 for me.
Typisk trea.
Oh my god, so excited to see Arctic Monkeys here. I've never heard their first album, and I think it's not so much for me, but I enjoyed knowing where they come from.
(Genre = Punk and Indie Rock) 1. The View From The Afternoon - 9/10 2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - 8/10 3. Fake Tales of San Francisco - 7/10 4. Dancing Shoes - 7/10 5. You Probably Couldn’t See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me - 7/10 6. Still Take You Home - 6/10 7. Riot Van - 8/10 8. Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured - 6/10 9. Mardy Bum - 10/10 10. Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But..... - 5/10 11. When The Sun Goes Down - 9/10 12. From The Ritz To The Rubble - 7/10 13. A Certain Romance - 9/10 (Album Rating = 7/10) I absolutely love the Arctic Monkeys, but I prefer their more recent work in comparison to this album. Loving the rock elements throughout this album, and how each song sounds very different from the next. Glad I was recommended this album as I have added a few songs to my playlists and would probably listen to this album again!
Not what I thought. I expected emotion, got punk-tinged snarl rock. Which is better! Clearly I haven’t really listened to Arctic Monkeys.
The View From the Afternoon: fun song, got me excited to hear the rest of the album. random ska break *I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor: really good song, stupid catchy. wish it had a little more grit maybe but that's not a negative, just personal preference. it definitely has a vibe and a presence regardless *Fake Tales Of San Francisco: enjoyed this one a lot. I feel like I don't have a lot to say about these tracks because they're not particularly unique, they just do this sound really well *Dancing Shoes: high energy, aptly titled. reminds me of Bloc Party which tracks since this was around the same time *You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me: Fall Out Boy ass title. random comparison but this reminds me so much of a specific song by The Bobby Lees, maybe Dig Your Hips? love the parts where the guitars kick in full blast, had me bobbing my head along for sure *Still Take You Home: pretty similar to the last song so I also like it (maybe a little better), but they're basically interchangeable Riot Van: feels like an interlude, nice to have a little break but nothing special to me *Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured: the bass line/guitar riff during the verses fuckin rocks. love the bridge too. great song *Mardy Bum: this is fantastic honestly. sometimes a song just has some unidentifiable thing that makes it feel like a classic and this has that to me *Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...: they cranked up the distortion on this one (thank God). the build during the instrumental break goes crazy, I wanted them to keep at it for like two more full minutes. *When The Sun Goes Down: that guitar riff is such ear candy. thought it would be kind of a snoozer from the start but it's energy on energy on energy. love this one *From The Ritz To The Rubble: chorus is massiveeeeeee, fuzzy dance-y punk-y goodness. I keep expecting to find some filler but it's truly all killer straight through A Certain Romance: love that twinkly guitar tone. has a bit of a ska feel again with the guitar plucks on the upbeats. glad it has a big payoff towards the end because aside from that it's a bit whelming for an album closer this album is pretty much set up to win by being post-2000's indie rock which is not only my bread but my butter as well, whereas everything else has been stuff I wouldn't have listened to on my own. I guess you could call this a zero skip album since it's consistently solid throughout even though not much of it is remarkable. the couple songs I didn't save were still good, but I'm okay just hearing them if I decide to spin the entire record (which I probably will). also the vocalist sounds like a douchebag but that's par for the course with all these rock albums __ SCORE: 7/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Dancing Shoes, You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me, Still Take You Home, Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured, Mardy Bum, Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But..., When The Sun Goes Down, From The Ritz To The Rubble
Completely listenable. Good instrumentals, unremarkable lyrics.
I remember the excitement around the time I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor came out. Everything I've heard since from then is a diluted version of this. A couple of other songs on the album are OK but nothing is on the same level. The artistic progression to a 70s lounge act and continuing popularity in America also seems hard to explain I don't see any reason why I'll be looking to return to this.
Let down the middle for me
It’s a fine little turn of the century rock album on par with The Strokes or The Fratellis. No complaints.
Fiery lads being uh fiery. Before they stopped being fiery and discovered their inner lounge the only dancing going on was the jumping up and down and up and down and up...yeah. Respect the hell out of it. They're kids on this outing and that energy comes through but it never really takes flight. It's just up and down and up and down and up...
This really did not hold as much as I expected to. Riot Van is a lovely song, but at the end of the day, it was bit of silly snooze.
Ok, I guess, but I was already well past the age or inclination for this kind of music/attitude when the album first came out. Musicianship is excellent, but very few memorable tunes outside the singles - those that are tend to be the few quieter moments. Definitely don’t feel like I missed anything by not listening to this at the time, but pleased to have at least given it a try now. And do appreciate it meant a lot to a lot of people.
Never heard of these guys, but good exposure to something new. Probably won’t listen again, but I appreciate the style and music
The Arctic Monkeys have a very distinct sound. Some people will love it, but I found I got a bit bored of it by the end of the album. There are no bad songs here, but it's not for me. Favorite Songs: Perhaps Vampire Is A Bit Strong But...
Remember the hype around this when it first came out. Felt like quite a front loaded album, but it didn’t have much sticking power to me. A lot of people liked the real life lyrics but I always found them a bit shallow. View from the Afternoon, Dancing Shoes, When the Sun Goes Down and Certain Romance stick out in my mind as the one I enjoyed the most.
So this is the band Russell Brand copied when he was in his little singing phase huh?
Rolling stone albums 373 A perfectly fine rock and roll album, Nothing special. A bit punk tinged and gnarly but hardly memorable or special.
Debut album from Sheffield guitar band Arctic Monkeys has a nice early rawness reminiscent of the Strokes and Oasis. Some good singles with plenty of simple hooks make this a bit of a rocker. Worth checking out.
This IS! Fine. With all the glaze this got I half expected my toes being curled in ecstasy but nah it was good. Good almost great but still good. 3.00-3.50/5
Essentially just Artic monkeys Some of its good Some of it isn’t 3.5/5 really but that’s not an option
I enjoyable AM album. I noticed their drummer the most out of everything. Solid! 7 out of 10
Kinda unique honestly. Very british, and pretty punky alot of the time. This album wasn't bad. If I knew nothing about this album before going in, it would be pretty obvious which song would make it big.
I'm not a fan of a band's later work being used too judge their early stuff but favourite worst nightmare is the album following this and just outclasses it in every way. That being said this is still really cool indie that I'm kinda nostalgic over. 3*
Lekker albumpje, vooral mardy bum
I really liked this album around the time it came out. Doesn't hit me as hard now, but still some great tracks and fun lyrics. A lot of British people on this list.
*** A Bit to much Indie. Ok, but nothing more
Somehow I don't think I've ever actually listened to an Arctic Monkeys album before. I knew of them, because who doesn't? They definitely demonstrate that blunt style of British rock from the early 2000s, recalling contemporaries like Franz Ferninand and Maximo Park. They're probably a little more accessible than both of those, which helps explain their massive fame at the time. It's a good album but I think it might have been more exciting at the time it came out. You had to be there, as they say. Still, it was worth a listen.
nice sound.
It was good. I like more variety in an album, which isn't always the norm.
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘈𝘮, 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘕𝘰𝘵 has the swagger and guitars to tick the “indie rock” box, but I’m not convinced it offers much beyond that label. The songs are energetic and capture a slice of 2000s nightlife, yet the hype feels bigger than the music itself. A decent debut, but far from the groundbreaking indie classic it’s often made out to be.
Alright he.
A classic album from when I was a young adult. I admit I don’t love the album but there are a few tracks that even I appreciate.
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 🍻🥴🚬 Production: 📻🤔🤷 Music: 😎⏳🔄 Rating: 🙈🙉🙊/5
I enjoyed this. I'm a big "AM" fan and haven't listened to their earlier albums. While this first album is definitely evidence of a band coming into their sound and finding their niche, it was enjoyable. Hoping their later albums come up on this 1001 list.
I don't like this album nearly as much as I should and I'm convinced it's the cigarette imagery messing with my subconscious. Also the way this album was marketed was super annoying in 2006. . . I try and love this album but I just can't.
The Arctic Monkeys sound is so unique yet timeless, but this definitely isn't my favorite album of theirs. Fingers crossed for Favorite Worst Nightmare to be on this list too
I like the instrumentals on this especially Still take you home. Pretty solid listen overall
M-5/10 S-5/10
Dancey post punk from the mid 2000’s. Not exceptional, but still a fun listen.
Lot of energy here.Rather liked it
除了最后一首其他的都不喜欢,不明白车库摇滚旋律和节奏如果都不行的话有什么好听的,被黑人音乐吊打的玩意。
This album came out when I was in Korea... we used to frequent Club FF, styled as an "indie bar", and "I bet you look good on the dancefloor" was heard multiple times a night. I think I prefer where Arctic Monkeys went with their sound as they matured (e.g. A&M) compared to this debut. Some great singles, but the sound wasn't that distinct from their peers... yet.
It's good.. I feel like if I was a bit younger when it came out it would have it harder for me.
Meh
Solid just not my style
Good listen. The song writing stood out.
6/10
Meh, it was alright but forgettable. 2.5/5
AM? More like Advil PM
Pretty good.
Can't say I'm the biggest Arctic Monkeys fan but this is the best thing I've heard from them so far
More punk rock than I was expecting. Reminds me of Sprints
i say you're a gloriously original new take on mouthy guitar rock
„Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not“ ist ein energiegeladenes Debüt, das den Zeitgeist der britischen Indie-Rock-Szene der 2000er Jahre perfekt einfängt.
Part of me wants this album to get off of my lawn. Though, another part of me knows the Arctic Monkeys are nice boys and when they mature they will make some stuff I like better. They're kind of like Radiohead that way.
This was everywhere when it came out. I liked it, but with time I liked it less and less as I wanted to hear something else. Listening back, I like it less now than I did then. I think this is slightly tainted by the absolute guff that they’ve released since and the gushing praise that comes there way when they do anything from the media. It’s not great. It’s not bad. It’s of its time. 3 stars, but only just.
This is a band, and an album, that I want to like more than I do. That said, there are a couple bangers here.
