Ouais pas mal
Yay
I like arctic monkeys! They’re such a staple of tumblr time when I was growing up. I had always wished I had gone to their concert. This album was great.
Meh. Dancing Shoes was on heavy rotation for me when this came out but I could never get into it as much as some people did.
Meh
2006 was a rich year for rock music and I'm not sure this was one of the huge highlights. But then again, save for a handful of songs I never really got into Arctic Monkeys. Especially this album, it's fine but it's not a favorite. A lot of the songs have the same relentless rah rah rah energy, so it feels like when you hear one you've heard them all (nearly). Thankfully you get a little more rhythm in the stretch from Riot Car to Mardy Bum (plus A Certain Romance, which is a great ender), so that's where this record is at its best. Everything else sorta blends into one another.
Meh
I kind of like Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured
Oh, goody, another British rock band. Maybe this one will sound different than the previous five. Nope.
Probably my favorite of Artic Monkeys' discog. Their later stuff sounds like they're trying to hard to be weird in an intellectual way. They catchy hooks and bouncy musical energy of this album is what made people dig AM to begin with. The "volume wars" era mixing and mastering is apparent on this album and it's not particularly well done beyond that. The songs themselves get my foot tapping and my ears engaged. It's just a fun listen, but nothing mind-blowing.
It was fine. None of the songs I knew. 3/5
not entirely my thing, but the British accent made up for some of it
Pretty decent, I enjoyed it despite feeling like it had only one overall emotion throughout. Its not exactly my vibe but I can see the value.
Not as good aa I remembered.
Not my favorite era of the arctic monkeys. But must give the credit it deserves. This album exploded these kids on to the scene when they were nearly still in diapers.
Glad I got this from the generator. I have heard of them but haven't listened to them at all closely. This kind of sneaks up on you from being a chavvy cross between The White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand, but toward the end of the album it seems to find its own voice. Listening to the whole thing beginning to end is sort of like riding along with these fellas as they experience a night out, stuff can go right(\"I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor\") and then things can go wrong (\"From the Ritz to the Rubble\"). Separating this from other post 9/11 post-punk revivalists (like Franz Ferdinand in fact)are that they make these compelling little stories, and the lofi affectations that have a ton of burning young-man energy. Actual songs that don'task me to invest too much effort (I'm looking at you Arcade Fire). Fun tunes, fun album, a great listen from beginning to end! At 41 minutes (the perfect album length) it's a throwback to when the Album was a \"unit of art\" to quote someone who I forgot.
Decent album
Average
I mean, it was pretty good mid 2000s rock. I don't have a super strong opinion on it though.
Some pretty good tracks.
I’ve been surprised by the number of debut albums that have made it into this book. It makes me wonder a few things. Did the authors think that these artists peaked immediately? Are they so good that their debut AND at least one other album made it? Why pick debuts when there’s probably an album that better encapsulates the artist in their more mature, refined stage of their career? I just find it strange. That being said, this was a great listen. High energy on every track. Frantic, manic, bursting at the seams. It felt like a Raconteurs album crossed with the Fratellis’ debut album “Costello Music.” But man, a lot of the songs sound the same. Yes, the riffs are different. Yes, the melodies are different. But the frantic vocals, the lyrics about stories of being out late with friends and getting into shenanigans and getting drunk, the guitar distortion. It’s all consistent throughout most of the album. And that’s why I wish that a different album from Arctic Monkeys made it here. Because I have to believe that they took this raw energy and talent and refined it further into something great. Maybe I’ll find that out for myself at some point. For now, this was good but I can see them being better. Three stars. Standout tracks: The View from the Afternoon, I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor, Dancing Shoes, Perhaps Vampire is a Bit Strong But…, A Certain Romance
I got tired of it halfway through but it was decent
Love the band, and a few songs off the album. But not their best.
Modern day Clash. Good stuff, great for a walk/run
Yesss, but ...
Sounds a little repetitive, and I have heard some of the songs on this album a million times. But still a great album to recommend to others or listen all the way through every couple of years. 7/10
Its pretty okay not amazing by any means. Might need to give a relisten at some point soon. I understand the appeal but it defiantly fizzles out near the end.
Good album, drives hard, sort of washes out after a while.
Fun and expressive rock
Fun and raucous. This would have been a riot to dance to when it first came out. The lead singer embeds a lot of character and emotion into his voice. A little too "punky" for me to fully love, but I appreciate it all the same. All shorty songs, longest (by almost a full minute) is 4.5 minutes.
So hard to separate this album from the feeling I had towards it at the time. They were the cover of every magazine before they had even released a song. I think the actual content is decent enough, mardy bum and sun goes down are both great, but id be hard pushed to give it more than a high 3
Well after my regular music listening. Didn’t hate it. But it sounds very generic “rock” 3ish
Are the Arctic Monkeys one of the last successful rock artists? I only have listened to and own one Arctic Monkeys record. Which is the AM record and I really enjoyed it. This record was alright. I thought I'd like it more than I do. I listened to it twice, as I feel like it deserved it. Some issues that I have is the over indulgence of the staccato guitar. I appreciate the bass guitar taking the melody lead but the guitar can be a bit abrasive as t times. And it kind of has a shrillness that I don't care for. I prefer the more rockin' guitar parts then the former. The lead singer has a great voice. At times, I get a White Stripes feel from this record. I can definitely see an overlap of fans. This record didn't really have anything that stood out from the rest of the album. Not that it all blended together. But it was average at best. Kind of disappointed that I didn't like it more because I really wanted to. Maybe I set the bar too high? I won't count them out though because I know they have great music: AM.
Didn't really impress me but it wasn't terrible either.
Super high energy and they have a very distinctive style and sound. The album was fun and I really like I bet you look good on the dancefloor. I hope that some of their other albums are a bit more musically diverse because they did sound a little derivative at times.
#105. This is peak 2000s hipster rock here. Fun fact: this album was almost called "Looking Good on the Dance Floor, and 12 Other Forgettable Songs to Twirl Your Moustache To," but they decided to change it last minute. 3/5: acceptable, but just barely
Fun kick ass rock. Hilarious how I was once told by a nephew that he listens to blues 'Like Arctic Monkeys". That being said, there could be said they do have some blues influences... but nah, not blues ;)
This is a solid album overall with above-par musicianship. I found the singer's voice off-putting at first, but had mostly come around by the end of the album. Had I listened to the album when it first came out, when I was a twentysomething, I might have rated it a bit higher. But the youth culture lyrical content appeals less to me today than it might have then. One song ("Vampires") liked on Spotify.
I like their later stuff, this was a little too “hard” for me
Pretty good Brit-rock album. Solid instrumentals and I liked the singer's unique voice.
Good rocking album
Not bad, not great.
I liked it ok!
I enjoyed this. I've tried listening to this band before and it wasn't memorable. This was pretty good though.
liked. good vibes. nothing I favorited.
I loved the sharply observed take on life. The lyrics were the star, giving you lots to think about.
To my taste, gets enjoyable at “Riot Van” after a slight switch of play style in “Dancing Shoes” Overall not bad 3/5
3.5 best look good on the dance floor
Standard Indie-Rock. 3/5
I've never sat down and listened to this album, but I *did* have a livejournal and then a tumblr so I think I've heard all of it before. It's fine? I never got into Arctic Monkeys when my cooler friends did. I do like Teddypicker, which is not on this album.
Nicht meines
interesting, however too heavy for me
Contrappuntista
good, but not as good as i remember!
Thoughts before listening: I remember when this came out and the Arctic Monkeys were being hailed as the next big thing in rock...at least since the Strokes I guess. They certainly have seemed to sustain much more of a career than I thought they would. The only song I remember from this album is I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor...and it's really good. Review: ...Dancefloor is still the best song on here, but the whole album is pretty good. This is catchy alt rock with plenty of hooks and overall a fun listen. I hear a lot of the Libertines and the Strokes in what the Arctic Monkeys were doing which is appropriate since those two bands hit right before the AMs and garnered similar praise for their debut albums.
actually pretty good. 3.4/5.
I’ve never been a huge arctic monkeys fan, but this is a decent rock album!
I recognise a couple of tracks tho I would never call myself an Artic Monkeys fan it wasn't bad.
i generally enjoy the arctic monkeys but for some reason this album just kinda bores me after a while
Not my favorite. Upbeat
Favorite track was from the Ritz to the rubble
Bättre mot slutet.
Sorta forgettable, feels very much like all the other music from the era
Pretty good, almost punk at points.
3.5/5
Good, but maybe over played
- Riot Van - Mardy Bum - A Certain Romance
3/5 - Fun album to hum along with. Perfectly mediocre album. They all play well together; the lyrics seem unique and catchy enough to sing along. But nothing quite stands out. Much like the 2000s in general, i do not think time has been too kind to this album. They were once so new and fresh and shaking up the indie scene with poppy feel to match the traditional angst of indie music. I'm sure i would love this album more had I found it in high school when i had some more angst myself. Ultimately, I don't think it achieves much more than being an album to put on when in the reminiscing mood.
Very very British. All T, no shade but is this just a British version of Phoenix crossed with the killers and Franz Ferdinand? It’s a chicken and egg situation. Who cares 🤷🏻♂️
It starts off rowdy and obnoxious in a way that I really have no use for, but the album eases up and gets more thoughtful as it goes along, and in the back half I started to feel myself getting on board. Yeah, okay, they’re pretty good. But ultimately this is still by and for a mindset that I’ve never shared and that holds no mystique for me, so, you know, three stars.
Solid
A slightly above average album which made it to this list because… yeah, that part baffles me
Decent album. Favorite song I bet you look good on the dance floor. Prefer the slower AM though.
Dancing Shoes, Riot Van, Mardy Bum, Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But..., When the Sun Goes Down, FROM THE RITZ TO THE RUBBLE!!! This is closer to a 3.75 but I'm only rounding down because I prefer their other album still.
As a debut album this hits hard. Drumming, guitars, everything is top notch. But I probably prefer some of their later albums more.
I like it but it doesn’t really feel like the freshest or best from AM
There are moments on here where I am pleasantly surprised, but at its worst this is a truck commercial soundtrack. It’s a stepping stone for discovering better things, the missing link between popular and good. See also: black keys, foo fighters, coldplay. Really a 2.5, will round to 3 cuz I’m such a nice guy
It’s fine. Feels more like a right place right time album than a classic
Angsty
I quite liked "Riot Van" and "Red Light Indicates...." The rest were good, but all sounded the same to me: intense, but pushing just a bit too hard. Still, it's a valiant first effort and sounds better than a lot of other crap that came out around that time.
Every time I see Arctic Monkeys on a playlist I get excited until I realize I only really like one or two songs from the Arctic Monkeys
Fun but for me not terribly memorable.
Another great album.
Ok, not my style
it was alright like like 3 songs
Dudes voice is a bit annoying but it’s pretty good. I think I am a bit negative toward them cos I knew a douche in high school who was friends with these guys. More Talented and more British Jet
I have heard the band name before but never paid that much attention. They now have my attention. I'd say more of a punkish sound than rock, but either way, the sound and energy I look forward to hearing. Started out banging and never stopped! A very good album from start to finish that left me wanting to explore more of these guys. I will dive into their library of music. Can't really say a specific song stood out from the rest because the entire album is solid. I did like the line "The band were fucking wank and I'm not having a nice time." I laughed and thought, what a bitch. And then I thought of that shitigan coach who cried like a lil bitch after a football game. Apparently a michigan man = pussy who cries about getting caught cheating. Enough about that clown school. Added bonus, the music that Spotify kicked into when the album was over was perfect. First song was Love Buzz by Nirvana. Very good album, followed up by solid, random tunes is a good day of listening to music. I'm real close to a 4 with these guys and probably closer to 4 than the 3, but 3.8 it's going to be with the scoreboard showing a 3. In a few weeks I'll look back and wish I had given a 4. 3.8
Other than AM I really only knew a handful of Arctic Monkeys songs. The hits, mostly. And I quite like most of what I've heard. WPSIATWIM also has a fair few songs that I like as well and will absolutely be going back to. Mostly off of the front half of the album I found it kind of samey by the end. I was kind of surprised by its punk edge. I'm more used to AM's groove influences, I guess. It's weird because I normally don't like this style/sound of rock music but the Arctic Monkeys do it different. I won't be buying this on vinyl or anything but it's perfectly entertaining. 3
Cool record. Will listen again.
All very listenable, nice guitar and drums, and Alex Turner's voice is very unique. Few outstanding songs though.
3/5 close but no
A bit too shouty, not really able to get into it. Maybe need more listens. Bet you look on the dance floor, stand out song.
A little to much for me! 3 stars
Enjoyable. Repetitive in places. Alex Turner's vocals are grating at times. Overall, it was a fine slice of fun! 69/100
Made me feel like a teenager again. (I don't like ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)
Didn't love the start of this album. It felt like generic rock that wanted to be punk. I've said it before, but it's hard to hear an artists accents, so it's hard to tell where in the world they are from. Not the case here, these Monkeys really emphasized the fact that they are English. Overall, the album got better as it progressed, but it still feels just like a rock album. Mardy Bum was a stand out and the basslines were pretty solid throughout. This one is pretty squarely a 3 for me.
Did not realize how popular Arctic Monkeys was on Spotify until I looked them up. I liked the consistent sound across the album with good energy. Could be convinced to listen to more, but outside of my usual genre interests.
3 - I can see myself liking this more in the future, but as it stands, I'm comfortable with a 3. It can feel a bit repetitive, and only, like, one or two songs stood out from the bunch to me. But yeah, I'm sure it'll click when I revisit it eventually.
Hadn't heard most of these songs before - in fact I only know I had heard one or two. They all sound pretty similar to one another lol. I did like the pace and mild rock - reminds me of some of Fall Out Boys' subtler songs, which I liked. Good first album to start with.
I had never heard this album before. I’ve played it a few times. It’s a good listen. There are some terrific lyrics here - When The Sun Goes Down is terrific. So is Fake Tales Of San Francisco. I get the feeling they were listening to those early Strokes records. They can really rock but their overall approach is quite diverse. I enjoyed it.
I was listening to this album when Hal, my 18 year old son, wandered into my office. "Ah," he exclaimed, "the only Arctic Monkeys album I really like!" "oh, why's that, then?", I ask. "It doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's energetic, and it feels real." True that. This is one really captures the feeling of a young person enjoying the nightlife in a provincial town. And "I bet you look good on the dance floor" is a bangin' tune. Thumbs up!
Great songs
First time listening to Arctic Monkeys. The music was pretty decent. Not a fan of the vocals though. The combination of the English accent, the speak-sing, and distortion annoyed me at times.
It's a pretty decent album, but I'm not sure why it's on this list. Artic Monkeys have better albums and there are better and more influential examples of the style.
Better than their recent offerings. Here the singer doesn't really try to sing, but makes up for that with energy
Good
Not bad but too bad it's so popular.
I have really tried to start getting into Arctic Monkeys, but they are really hit or miss for me. Alex Turner's vocals and lyricism is best on tracks such as Marty Bum or When the Sun Goes Down. I like how this album gives strong vibes of a danceable rock and roll sound, but I think they may have lost that with all of the albums following. Stand out track: Mardy Bum
This album was better than expected. It's pretty solid and a good rocking time. The album carries a consistent vibe, but none of the songs really stand out to me. This would probably be great for some who just wants to jam to punk-ish rock. The first song has cool mixing, when listening with headphones the rhythm guitar goes back and forth between headphones Favorite Track: The View From The Afternoon
Not my favorite Arctic Monkey’s album but still some solid sounds and clever lyrics…
Easy 3, maybe a 4 on repeated listens. Super catchy, surprisingly danceable
Quintessential Brit pop/rock zone, and like it. Always a fan of Alex Turner’s matter-of-fact and sometimes frantic/desperate delivery, and the song writing is very good. If someone else was singing I probably wouldn’t like this too much That being said , this thing thrashes around a little too much and loses a little bit off my attention, I’d give I’d a decent 3
ok
Gekend album. Staan goeie nummers tussen.
Ok. Prefer AM as an album
3,5
A very solid album with good tunes.
It's good to hear in the background but most musics sound the same for me, like a "Artic Monkeys" formula. Which is not bad for a single song, but for a entire album is a bit repetitive for me.
Started strong but faded about half way. I really don't like the vocals and, other than the main single ("..dance floor..") nothing stood out at all
sounds like a surfer boy album. I like "A Certain Romance" the most.
a bit loud? nothing stood out, probably deserves a second listen
Don’t really vibe with later Arctic Monkeys, but this is pretty solid stuff. There’s a punk edge that I’m here for, and it can get almost delightfully snobby. Still a little too poppy for my tastes sometimes but not bad. C+
I'm not super well versed in the article mokneys catalog but with ny limited knowledge I would say this is just as catchy and nice as anything that hit the charts. But the other edge to that is it does not feel like they have grown or evolved at all either. Amd that bothers me. In 20 years there should be some decent change. Not saying you have to leave yr old fans behind but take them on a journey with you. More meta things aside I can't deny its a good listen. 3*
This is the very epitome of a three-star album. The music on this album is absolutely fine. There is nothing outstanding about it. There is nothing bad about it. It's just really music. I would put this on a music playlist to walk around a city and give me a pep in my step any day. Pick any song. That's the song to walk around a city to. Do you want a song to really connect to you on emotional level? Look elsewhere.
Pleasantly surprised. Nice mix on the music and vocals. Will listen to again
Pretty solid indie rock, Dance floor is still a banger
Drums!!!! Vocals and lyrics are strong and interesting. Liked much of it but the repetition of the guitar was loud and annoying way too often overtaking the songs.
Kind of punky, raw rock
Starting to hear the evolution of their current sound!
they're insipid
Okay weird I think I’ve never consciously listened to the Arctic Monkeys before. Enjoyed it, it wowed me about as much as any standard alternative album could, but seems like the type that grows on your over multiple listens. 3.5/5
Some fun stuff, just hard enough for my taste
Bootleg strokes. Rating: 3.3
Average
This album encapsulates a very specific moment in time for me. It was an introduction to a whole new era of English aughts rock. I prefer AM to this one though, because the singles are stronger and more darkly suggestive. But I sure rocked the fuck out of that looking good on the dance floor song for a hot moment, don’t you ever doubt it.
Ok
More agressive than expected. A bit samey after a while, but some really interesting stereo production in some songs.
Bit rougher around the edge monkeys album with some true og's from them. Favourite Worst Nightmare is a bit nicer imo from this era. Mix of bangers and some that are not really up my alley. I guess the ones that sound too punk-ish are not really nice to me.
It was OK. No songs I particularly disliked, but nothing memorable either.
Certainly not as good as their later records, but still some catchy noisy tunes on here.
Singles from Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor (#1 UK, #7 US Alt) When the Sun Goes Down (#1 UK) Standouts: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Rating: 3
People say you're the British Strokes, that's what you're not.
I find it kinda accessible brit-indie-rock that is kind of like jock-jams for da club or a soap commercial. Meh, it's fine... it's formulaic and there.
okay, just too teen for me
I would say the Arctic Monkeys are quite successful here in achieving the punk/indie/rock sound and themes they're known for. It's just not music I personally enjoyed very much today.
solid. like a nice big dump.
3.5
Some good songs. Worth hearing again, probably.
Arctic Monkeys are always interesting to me, since on paper they're the exact right era & genre that I should be a fan, but I'd overlooked them back then, and they still fail to click every time I go trying to get into them
Quite an energetic youthful album. From the Ritz to the Rubble has been my favorite. Some songs aren’t as sonically distinct from each other as I might like.
I’ve heard this band’s sound changes up a lot. This one sounds like Jack White meets the Strokes. Not in love with the songs but the guitars sound very cool.
Not bad, kinda diggin it. It is a bit one dimensional and It'd get old if I had to listen to it often or if their other albums sound the same, but on first listen, it was reasonably good.
It
not their best
It's not bad, but it's all been done at least as good by other bands before them. Somehow this got them to be one of the biggest "indie" rock bands of the late 00s. Favorite song: Still Take You Home.
Sounds like early Billy Talent's projet Pezz, minus the innovation. Not bad, just not very interesting to my ears.
Good guitar work. Makes me wanna run naked across a football pitch. 🙈🙉🙊
good album but not my favorite sounds, kind of cliche brit-pop rock
Don't think I've listened to this album front to back since the year it came out. One of my best friends, who at the time walked around looking like Ben Sherman had barfed on him, was going through a douche bag phase and got addicted to this album. I think that was part of the turn off for me, as there was a certain type in America who embraced the Arctic Monkeys and that wasn't my scene. I always moved more with weed and psychedelic types than coke in the bathroom of a dive bar types. So I usually went to the former kind of shows over the latter, and I skipped AM every time they came through. Listening to this now, I like it more than I did at the time. It has an energy that reminds me of the time and all the bad choices everyone I knew (me too) was making. But it's not an album of nostalgia for me, it's one that makes me think of the regret of a morning after and assholes who had no regret the morning after. This really peaks in Riot Van. I'll probably come back and listen to this again, I do think it's better than some of that scene upon this listen, still not my main cup of tea, just not as grating and obnoxious as it was to me in the 00s. 3 stars leaning to 3.5
this sounds like other things that i already like but i like those other things more than this
Some great songs on here of course, although they have been overplayed a little. As a whole album it's kinda middling
I mixed these up with all the other landfill indie bands at the time, but resented them more because I loathed having them forced down my neck like an unclean penis by everyone. In hindsight, it's leagues better. Alex Turner has strong Morrissey vibes (but at this point was at the age it's not embarrassing) and it's pretty good! The shittiness of going out in the noughties is the main lyrical theme, and I can very much relate.
Some of these songs I love, some feel a bit average to me. But it's still a really fun album with lots of memories attached to it.
Meh
B side saves the album
Didn’t like the first half, it sounded obnoxious. Second half was great
I never got into these guys when this came out (or after), but heard how they were the next garage rock revival band. I loved the Strokes, White Stripes, Hives and felt like this was a band I should check out. This was still a good 8-10 before I had a streaming subscription and checking out new bands wasn't as always easy and cheap as it is now. Long story to say that I haven't really listened to their stuff until now. As much as I was "supposed" to like these guys, this album just didn't catch. Maybe it's missing the catchy melodies in the hooks that you get with the Strokes. Maybe it's noisier than where my tastes have shifted to now. Whatever it is, I don't feel the need to come back to this.
The type of music I typically enjoy, and a perfectly good listen; would probably have liked it a lot if I had heard it when it came out, but now angular indie rock is less where my tastes lie. Best song: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
This was cool it’s like the hits but there’s no hits. Feels like some more punk oriented less radio friendly less fuzz on the vocal type stuff
Meh, ok.
HL: “When the Sun Goes Down”, “A Certain Romance”, “Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured” Here’s another album I’m glad that I came across, it’s a fairly strong debut by the Monkeys but I’ll have to dig deeper for an album of theirs I really vibe with. Somewhere between the dance punk of this, the radio-friendly “AM” & the newer, jazzier stuff coming out this year. November 10, 2022
I was mixed on this.. although thought From the Ritz to the Rubble and Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured were both pretty excellent songs.
I dont really know what to make of this. This is my first time ever actually hearing this band. I avoided the hype when this came out in part because that band name is ridiculously awful. There's a slight punky quality running to this, but overall it's a bit more like The Strokes. I think they'd work better if they would lean into that sound. At the same time it's kind of Brit pop? Pardon me if I sound foolish there. I don't really know how to categorize it. Overall, I'm not sure who this record is really for, it's not bad...but it's not especially good. I think it could grow on me? I really wish they had a different name though. Woof.
Pretty good indie rock, I have never been into them. They have always seemed quite far up their own arse. 3.5/5
Enjoyed it!
Great album! And "I bet that you look good on the dancefloor" was one of the first free itunes singles I ever got back in the day. Really enjoyed listening to this one but it was fast!
Cheeky little monkeys, these ones. My first album from them was AM in 2013, which I think a lot the purist fans would say is trashy or poppy or whatever, but I don't care, I love that album. This one has some heat on it too, though maybe not as much for me. I definitely recognized "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor," that's a classic and I'm almost certain it appeared in a Tony Hawk game or something. Definitely a welcome album, love a more recent rock album that actually rocks. Favorite tracks: I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor, Still Take You Home, From the Ritz to the Rubble. Album art: Guy blasting a cig, not much too it but it's definitely memorable. Looks like he wants to fight me. 3.5/5
Hard to believe this is 16 years old! Like a more modern oasis. Not my favourite style but I can appreciate
Some good tracks, but I never quite jived with their overall sound. A lot of this album has great energy and catchy hooks, but it also feels joyless. Saw some stuff online comparing them to The Strokes and The White Stripes, and I think I feel similarly about their sound.
Kinda rough for me I guess.
classic. uk vibes. idk if we'll ever get chance to see them outdo themselves
Pretty good, listenable. Nothing too stellar.
Respectable album that has kickstarted AM era. Seems to be loved in the UK, but I never really understood its appeal apart from a few songs. Songs are pretty solid, but uninteresting to me.
it's ok, had some bangers
Have some vague memories that later AM albums get better but never cared too much for their debut and always struggled a bit to get through it in one go. Had the same experience today, but things got better after a second listen. There is a lot of energy and some of the songs are actually quite nice. Highlight: "Fake Tales of San Francisco" (a great song!)
Sounded okay, but there was nothing special about it. Very unlikely that I'll be listening to this again.
Brit pop yes
Good tracks at 2, 11, and 13; the rest is monotonous filler.
Every song name is long lmao but a jam
A couple of cracking songs but overall the album dragged a little. Cheeky fun lyrics but felt like a lot of filler.
Touted as some kind of generational game changer for rock. I don't hear that.
I was never a fan of the Arctic Monkeys - felt like knock offs of earlier 2000's artists or like everyone was jumping on the bandwagon of a so-so band. Kinda like Jet - feels a bit all too familiar, or their lyrics are too simple. I might forever detest I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor. But maybe my view would've been different if their debut single was the first track - The View From the Afternoon. Great sound (albeit a bit like Supergrass) - pumping. I also really liked the final track - A Certain Romance. In between I still felt a bit divided. Sometimes cheeky lyrics and good beats, but also sometimes so little depth to lyrics (about party life or who is/isn't a wanker) and recycled beats - Fake Tales of San Francisco being a great example of this. I give it a 3.5 because I still can't shake that this just feels like a slight tweak to the sounds of Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis, or even Interpol (with worse lyrics).
Enjoyed it. Was good.
I like this album but don’t feel much of a need to return it. I remember liking it more in high school and college
Yeah, can't be arsed with this one. Enjoyed it back in 2007 or whenever, but not a single one of their records since and the Alex Turner hero worship that followed is kind of annoying. But mainly I just didn't like the music. This is clearly the best one though and obviously the lyrics are clever. Blah
Somehow they have all the components I would normally enjoy, but the muffled vocals, lack of melodies, lack of special songs really just make this band super average to listen to for me. I could never get into them in my life.
Decent alternative rock but without any real highlights or standout songs
I listened to this album quite a bit during high school. I wasn't in the mood for it very often, but it was enjoyable each time I played it. It still holds up somewhat, although I don't really care for it as much as I used to.
A bit snarly for me but there's shades of Franz Ferdinand which I quite like.
3.75
Boy did the press ever try to will this into being acknowledged as the greatest album ever recorded when it first came out. Overhype aside, the album is just fine. It's not going to change your life, and I'm almost envious of those who get to listen with fresh ears minus the fanfare.
It’s hard to imagine an indie rock band coming up with a fresh sound in 2006. But these guys are certainly punchy, using lots of starts and stops and in-your-face guitar to give the music added energy. The lead singer has a great voice, the lyrics are clever and the hits are quality, especially “I Bet You Look ….” It’s the fastest selling debut album by a band ever, but I’m not so into this sound these days. I think I’d prefer their later material.
This debut album from this post Brit-pop band is pretty ok innit. They are insouciant and full of attitude and it comes out in their music. Just when Brit-pop was waning in the early 80s the Monkeys came to the rescue with a more aggressive, harder sound. There's some decent guitar and drumming on this record.
I appreciate the eclecticism, but this is ultimately not for me
Fantastic debut but not as good as some people feel it is. To me it is dated and clunky in places the singer's wry lyrics sounding a lot more affected as the years pass. I do enjoy the album, don't get me wrong but it just feels like a safe nephew or what the Libertines had already just done. Could be worse it could be Coldplay
Exceptional when it's going all out, largely meh sadly
Alex Turner and the boys set out to give the world a memorable debut…they gave the world a few memorable tracks in an overall album full of too much filler. The hits in this are bangers though.
Dit was best wel ok! Get on your dancing shoes, You sexy little swine!
Confident, well-paced album. Would definitely rock with this if I was a white girl in the 2000s. StronG 3
Trea!
I liked it. Not too many songs I'd specifically add but as a whole it was pretty good
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not by Arctic Monkeys (2006) For a Britpop album that was marketed primarily on MySpace (remember that?), it turned out to be better than I was expecting. It’s a nice 21st century rock sound—plenty of fun with accented off beats, exaggerated triplets, cross-channel dancing, innovative rhythmic breaks, this music keeps you guessing. Very nice drumming by Matt Helders, and the lead vocals by Alex Turner are sassy, confident, crisp (very crisp), and recorded cleanly enough that they’re not smothered in the considerable sonic background. The rapid-fire and highly referential lyrics are not very deep, but the word pictures keep flying past with disciplined cadence. And when it’s time to slow down (“Riot Van”), the words are authentic and vivid. Makes me wish I had been there. Forty-one minutes of good frolic. I could pretend to be young again. 3/5
It is good not great.
white man music but its alright idk this albums concept does not resonate heavily with me but i do enjoy the instrumentals
03/25/2022 Nice debut album, full of energy. Not really into punk, but there's not really a bad song on this album. Good for them and their success! lol.
It was alright. Can’t say I’d seek them out. 3*
A profile picture of a man smoking, in a dark monochrome. A caption that goes like "whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not". Yep. This is definitely a Facebook profile of a millennial trying to be "edgy". And weirdly, this association sums up the album.
Favorites: Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong Mardy Bum I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
I hate the singer's voice, but the actual music is pretty decent.
Good until it wasn’t
This is an okay album, the type of music you can play on a young people's radio station. I'm honestly having trouble telling one song from another, but that might just be my neurons getting old.
Proto-pop-garage-punk? I'm not sure how this is classified, but take the irritating parts of all of those styles, blend them together into a homogenized slurry of early-00s rock and you get the Arctic Monkeys? 3/5
First few songs in was great, after two thirds it got a bit grating on the ears, then after the final couple it turned enjoyable again. A rollercoaster of emotions when listening to this. Favourite song was I Bet You Look On The Dance Floor.
3.6 - I remember NME or some British music magazine fawning over this record with bold superlatives, claiming it as the "best British rock" or the "best rock period" or some such. The few songs swirling around failed to grab me and that's how I felt after listening to this album. I bet these guys put on a spectacular live show and I can imagine a packed venue filled with attractive people dancing joyously. I just never connected with this prince of the hooligans persona complaining about nightlife and how girls can be a drag.
Witty, knowing lyrics, some energetic music. It doesn't come together quite right for me but I can see why it's popular.
Fun songs and cult classics, but not a fan of the singing. Grates on me after a minute and I don't find it very musically interesting.
Haven't actually heard this before. Not much background with the Arctic Monkeys. Feels like something I should like or perhaps would have liked more if I'd heard it back in the day when it came out. Pretty good straight forward guitar rock. Not sure I'm in love with the vocals but they're mostly fine. That kind sums up my feelings on this album actually... it's fine. Given the theme of the record, I can see why maybe this would have a lot of nostalgia for people who found this at the right age. Decent record but for some reason I didn't fully engage with it. Strong 3 I guess.
Fully impressive but definitely overshadowed by their more impressive and successful AM album.
It's fine, I guess? 5-6/10
not for me
I had only heard one Arctic Monkeys song before this, and never looked into them. Not bad. Punk rock isn't something I listen to much, so I doubt I would seek them out, but not awful music by any means.
Definitely knew the band's name before, but that's about it. Don't recall hearing their music. Some cool stuff here. Interesting rhythms, punk-ish melodies and vocals, and tight playing. When I'm in the mood for something with more drive and grit, I could see myself listening to this one again.
1 STAR
My daughter loves this group although not sure how she feels about this album. She would probably be devastated to hear that I think this is just okay. There are few songs I liked but most of it was just okay to me. Prolly 3.5/5
Good but why is like 90% of these recs post 1990? Gimme the old stuff.
A lot better than I thought it was going to be
It’s just an „okay” album for me. I wouldn’t necessarily skip it, but I definitely prefer the „AM” album and that vibe, which on the other hand I totally love! Can’t deny that the riffs are usually on point though!
A good pick me up album. A bit rough around the edges. Remarkable for a debut.
Ok. Just started listening. This is cool. (Just so you know, I mainly listen to the sound not the lyrics) 1. Strong opener. I like it.
Ok. pretty good modern British rock. didn't blow me away.
Better than I expected, but all songs sound the same
pretty great debut album
Good band I completely forgot about. I'd give this an upper 3 and round to 4.
Pretty good album that I do not find as compelling as the majority of critics do. Can't put my finger on what keeps me at arms length, I'll just say that I didn't connect with this the way I hoped I would 3.25 stars
i worry album art is more of an afterthought these days. maybe not to the artists but more so for listeners. it's such an important part of the experience. In this case, for me, a negative one. I don't know why but I hate this album art and it's legit having a negative effect on listening to the album.
Not bad
Some good old British music. I didn't find it super engaging but I can see why people would like this
zabavan, upbeat, crowd pleaser, osobno nisam odusevljena. malo je repetitive. opener je solidan.
The overlong and fundamentally meaningless title about sums this up for me. Significantly less there than what purports to be.
Post-punk revival album - not my go-to choice for casual listening , but good pump up music for the gym (fast paced, punchy drums and rhythm guitar) 3.5/5
Hell, thats really Punk-ey. Not at all like their recent albums. I dig the energy, but I strongly dislike the guitar sound. Vocals are, as always, really good. But I guess its a good rock/ punk album? I really don't know. Its fast and explosive.
not their best album, but fun
Whatever I say it is, that's what it's not. It's alright. I love the guitar. Sometimes I really enjoy the lyrics. Other times I couldn't care less about them mostly because I simply cannot relate. It's like Holden Caulfield rocking about his various late night bar-hopping escapades.
Helt ok
Good but not really for me
Not bad for indie.
Inte toppen! Okej
the view from the afternoon: ‘anticipation has a habit to set you up for disappointment in evening entertainment’ india summer vibes i bet you look good on the dancefloor: ojalá alguien me la dedique aunque no me vea good on the dancefloor. fake tales of san francisco: era un -5 hasta que dijo ‘is the proof that love's not only blind but deaf’ y me conquistó. dancing shoes: estuvo cute extraño ir al baile la verdad. you probably couldn’t see for the lights: basándome en esta y la canción anterior logro suponer que el alex vio a una gurisa linda en baile y se enamoró pero no la encontró en ig. still take you home: en esta me cayó re mal, brutas vibes al vértigo. riot van: que linda me fumaría un cigarro. red light indicates doors are secured: me aburrí en la mitad. mardy bum: ‘oh when you say i don’t care well of course i do, yeah i clearly do!’ quebraría en llanto si alguien me dice eso. perhaps vampires is a bit strong but...: esta también me aburrió y wtf ese candombe en el medio. when the sun goes down: abolicionistaaaaaaaaa. from the ritz to the rubble: meh. a certain romance: bruta nostalgia me dió:(
This is a different style than the Arctic Monkeys songs that I know. Not my favorite album tbh, felt pretty same-y throughout. Interesting to see how their music has changed in the past ~10 years though!
Enjoyable listen. Pretty middle of the road album though.
likeable enough, but never totally drank the kool-aid with them
Good but nowhere near their best
Pretty good tbf
Not bad, not great
Muy de los monkeys. Casi estilo propio aunque este estilo me deja tibio.
Solid album. Catchy rhythms.
Fun brit rock. I little grittier than I expected.
Not bad it's like the UK style band type music. 6/10.
I thought this was pretty good, and I'd listen to it again.
5
It was good, fine. Don't know why they're so popular!
A few bangers.
i listened to this 20 years ago and don't feel like going back
Meh it's the artic monkeys
Bottom tier AM album but not bad
Pretty good genuinely enjoyed
Kinda sparse, a lot of the songs sound the same. Would've probably loved this when it came out and I was in my indie guitar rock phase.
One of the better ones
it's all right, but it was never my thing, and it still isn't
@@@½. Nice straight-forward rock with a few twists, like quite a few songs on it.
