Reviews (page 11 of 14)

I hadn't listened to this album in full before, even though AM was a very important and formative album for me in my adolescence. I think it's a solid album, but definitely didn't trip my trigger as much as I expected. This debut definitely has the Arctic Monkeys sound, but lacks the refinement that makes their later work so special. While it starts strong, it kinda just stays like that for most of the album, not really going anywhere interesting or playing with highs and lows. It's not that I didn't enjoy this, but I think it does blend in to the other indie rock being made at the time. That being said, Alex Turner's vocals and songwriting will always stand out and are sharp here.

Legal, tipo de musica que agradaria qualquer ambiente.

97/1001. I can clearly see how all the music press went crazy over the next sensation: the Arctic Monkeys - restoring rock ‘n’ roll, making music, great again, giving hope to guitar based music, going back to the basic, the next Strokes etc. And partly why not, it is fresh and has energy, it seems the band had fun, it is not overproduced etc. BUT (add your favourite thing why it also sucks). My kids seem still to love them and their later ouvre, and whenever they have played it I haven't had to squirmish in pain. I guess that count for something. Lastly, as a person living in the Arctic I am ever so grateful for the band for bringing the global focus to the North. Or was it climate change? Well maybe you are to blame about turning my city to a tourist hellhole for 5 months in the fall-winter-spring.

like the great value version of AM

Very good album, just not my vibe

Not really my style, but I can see how people like it and why it was innovative at the time.

I cannot tell whether I like this or not.

Probably their best

It was fine.

A couple good ones, but very repetitive

Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not – Arctic Monkeys (2006) | Indie Rock / Garage Rock | Avg: 6.73 | Favorite Song: “Mardy Bum”* This debut is fast, sharp, and undeniably confident, and mostly solid, with a few standout moments. “Mardy Bum” rises above the rest with its laid-back charm and subtle emotional pull—arguably the most well-rounded song on the album. A handful of other tracks like “A Certain Romance” and “When the Sun Goes Down” land in the upper range as well, proving that the band had more than just punchy riffs going for them. There’s a clear voice here, even if the tone can feel one-note at times. Much of the album settles in the 6 to 7 range, which makes sense for a project that’s more about youthful energy than compositional depth. Some of the songs blur together in their pacing and vocal delivery, and while that adds to the unified aesthetic, it also limits the emotional variety. Still, it’s easy to hear why this hit like a jolt of electricity back in the mid-2000s. It’s messy, brash, and undeniably fun—even if it doesn’t fully break free from its own attitude.

A little too hard punk for my taste but it's okay. Would spin this again.

Ok and catchy at times, but a lot of it sounded the same after a while.

reminds me of the vines, and the other bands of their ilk around turn of the century punk pop rock. I definitely think it's better than the other bands of their ilk, but again, not really my thing. Guy's voice is a little grating. Would still rather listen to this than anything in the 2 or 1 star piles.

very aughts pop punk. not really my style

Ah yes, 2006, the era where indie and emo bands had story length titles to their songs. I can’t hate, I love those bands. Arctic Monkeys were never my favorite, but I enjoyed some of their songs. I tend to favor some of their songs from later albums, but there is some good stuff here too. “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” is a great song and has fond memories attached (my best friend used that as the closing credits and “bloopers” for our high school Hamlet movie. It was pretty great.) and “Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But…” is also a standout. There’s some other good tracks, and nothing here sticks out in a bad way. Definitely an enjoyable album.

Not Arctic Monkeys’ creative peak but their most raw and energetic stuff. Good listen, maybe a 3.5

I adore this album, it's on my regular rotation, I'm pretty sure I know every word. The Monkeys have overall a solid track record for writing fun lyrics, catchy, hooky songs and playing crisp, solid pop-punk-brit-rock. Absolute staple album for any teenager in the Western canon. This is by far my fave brit-rock album on this list so far (but I've hated most other brit rock stuff I've heard). Five stars for WPSIA,TWIN in terms of my personal enjoyment, but may I remind the dear listeners that this is meant to be a list of one thousand and one albums to listen to before you die. You have one thousand and one days and then you expire. And this is what you want to spend a day on? Absolutely not

Perfectly listenable, but didn’t grab me. I’m a bit fatigued on some of this music that was so popular as we were growing up. Maybe kids of the 80s feel the same way about stuff I lap up now?? Food for thought.

This is a great album. However, it’s also a compelling case against rock music as a vehicle for new bold statements about “the culture”. Listening to these songs - the detached sarcasm, the devil may care attitude to it all - I can’t help but feel that it’s played out. It’s not to say the music isn’t good (some these tracks go hard). I just don’t see it as bringing anything fundamentally new or interesting to the table as far as rock music goes. ✨

Didn’t love the first track but the album is listenable and evocative of a time. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is still good.

This is another one of those completely average albums. Nothing stood out, and nothing was terrible. The guitar was solid, but I found the singing slightly annoying.

I get why they'd include AM but this one is just kind of average to me

Not overly a fan of alternative rock/punk. I can see why college girls can sink their teeth into this genre of musoc

Not bad, not great. I’ve enjoyed the Arctic Monkeys stuff I’ve listened to over the years but it doesn’t grab me as amazing or anything.

One of my son’s favourite bands so I often hear this album around the house. But I was aware of them long before he was old enough to know them. There’s a lot to like about this album and I have bought the CD on the strength of liking most of the hits coming from it. Always happy to hear these songs on a random shuffle. 3/5 19/7/26

I have never listened to this album cover to cover despite being very aware of the Arctic Monkeys and enjoying the songs I have heard. I'm excited to hear any hidden gems I've been missing out on. Well, no real hidden gems unfortunately. The last song may have been my favorite of the songs I hadn't heard before. I wanted to like this album more. It just wasn't interesting to me. The guitar work seemed good, lots of "punk-y" type songs mixed in with some slower ones. It just didn't really grab me. Disappointing. 3.4/5

Not my style so much, but I like the pop punk vibe. And the guy has a really good voice.

Decent punky rock, modern, not overly produced.

It’s alright. Decent rock but a bit bland really. The lyrics and stories aren’t as clever as they think they are.

Having swerved this album when it came out, I wasn't sure how listening now would go. The first track didn't give me much hope as the fast and frantic on each instrument and vocal quickly became a constant baseline without much deviation for me. But then as the tracks progressed it gave me that variation I craved; in particular on the vocals. The lyrics are confrontational and caricatures people, which I find hard to tune into, but when/if you are tuned in, it's an adrenaline fun ride.

It’s fine, but not my thing.

6/10 Is this the Hives, Franz Fernidad, or the Vines? 7-7-2025

a drunk singer, a loop and an angry battery

Great thrash got boring

Decent, but unremarkable & derivative

Hard-driving ‘00s emo-post-punk garage rock. It has admirable energy and they let loose with some thrash. It was a little too British for me between the vocals and the lyrics, and too of its time.

It was ok

This is a shot of pure nostalgia. I had this album on constant rotation in high school. It was one of the albums that got me out of the classic rock hole I was stuck in. My tastes have definitely changed since then though, as I can’t see myself returning to this album too frequently, if ever. When this came out I absolutely loved the stop-start guitars and how they played with the bass and drums. It’s still fun to listen to now, but I definitely don’t connect to this music the same was as I did back then. I still listen to Modest Mouse from time to time, which was the other band that saved me from only ever listening to classic rock. It’s a shame they’re not on this list.

Frenetic pace is a nice change.

The way this band was imposed on the general public back in 2006 left me a little whatever about them, as a teenager craving music with a little more intensity. This album has aged well though. Arctic Monkeys are a classic case of a kick-ass drummer's ability to elevate an otherwise-just-fine band. Most of these songs just sound like riffs that any garage band from those years could have made up, but the band itself is really tight and has practiced a lot and the chemistry and energy is obvious. I probably would’ve thought the lyrics were deep when I was a teenager if I had paid attention, but I'm never going to sit down and pore over an Arctic Monkeys song on Genius or something. Idk it's still just Pretty Good Rock Music to me. Spotify says they’re the #36 most-listened to artist in the world as of mid-2025 which seems insane, but it doesn’t offend me that they’re one of the most popular bands in the world.

Went through this maybe 2.5 times and don’t really get it. I can see why it would be acclaimed, but the music is very grating to me. The constant minor progressions and aggressive accent. I do wonder if I have some deep seated disdain for the Brit’s, or it’s that these 2000’s groups ramp up the accent. Moments I enjoyed but I probably won’t be back.

Raw, nostalgic, unique stuff. This feels like a lot more than 41 minutes of material. I feel a little fatigue with the rough punky sound after the first 10 or so minutes. Fortunately, I think the album goes in a fantastic direction when it hits Riot Van at the midpoint. It saves the album and grows into something more. A little more poppy and personal. When I eventually return to this, I think ill just listen to the second half of the album. Far more fresh

Very fine brit pop record

Apart from "Mardy bum" it really seems to me a loooong continuous track, and a mid one

For sure an iconic sound, but every song sounds the same

Irreverent take on Northern life. Meh

Decent listen. I still do not understand the criteria for this list.

Fun album

I love the music but I never dug the singing style. Punk rants get a little repetitive sounding.

Good pop punk. Fun music.

Decent. But holy shit does every song sound the same.

I like their second album more, more variety there. This album is mostly in the same tone. Still enjoyable

Uhh it's an album made for the 2.5 but since it was all right background music, it gets a 3 star for me. It's fine, but most of the songs sounded the same.

View from the Afternoon...decent opener I Bet You Look Good...is good until the chorus. Don't care for the chorus Fake Tales...first half is a little boring. Second half kicks Dancing Shoes rocks in a generic way You Probably Couldn't See...you know what? fuck these song titles Still Take You Home...I like this one. Nice drive all the way through Riot Van...slows things down a bit. It's fine Red Light...feels like a throwaway Mardy Bum...this isn't all that aurally interesting, but I like it Perhaps Vampires...feels like a jam session-turned song. meh When the Sun...ok, but all the tracks are really starting to blend together From the Ritz...I like this one...like the bass groove A Certain Romance...just kind of exists. Pretty normal for a final track. So, why is it over 5 minutes?

Greit nok. Ikke det beste albumet deres.

This was a decent debut from Arctic Monkeys. While they were labeled indie rock, they were far from underground—this was a pretty commercial release. The album carries some garage rock aesthetics and a bit of punk edge, but overall, it’s more polished and radio-friendly than what you’d expect from a true indie band.

никогда не любил обезьян. но я оказывается не слушал их дебютник, он все таки нормальный

Never really understood Arctic Monkeys, but it's a decent album.

First few songs were fun, then it got boring. They should have put Humbug or AM here instead, those are way better albums. This probably sounds petty af but I rolled my eyes so hard when I read about the lyrical themes of this album on wikipedia. Seriously? All that yapping just to tell me about the lives of young clubbers and shit?🙄 Bruh, I don't care. It reminds me of how Fall Out Boy songs keep yapping endlessly about some horny loser dude who got used by a girl or something. Fave track: I bet you look good on the dancefloor. Would I revisit this: no.

The sound is good. But the whole album has the same sound. No diversity of beats, tones, chords, etc. got sick of it half way through

Some good tunes here, Riot Van is pretty good

Ok, al prenahajpano.

prvi put slušam i sad - da je loše, nije, al nije ni izvanredno dobro. vokal zanimljiv ali mi ne sjeda.

Just a really good brit-rock album. It's so consistently good throughout the album, that no track sounds better or worse than another. A Certain Romance is my favorite - great bass lines, strong guitar and the classic Arctic Monkeys vocal.

Would’ve been a really good EP

Look I know I should like this but Alex Turners voice is really slightly grating to me. The composition is simple and becomes very repetitive very early on.

I recall listening to this not long after it came out, as every few years, I browse SubPop’s website for new stuff (although I’m not sure why Arctic Monkeys showed up since they were on a different label). Anyway, enjoyed it much more as it beyond the first few songs. Much prefer this album by comparison to their more mainstream stuff, with the exception of AM. Perhaps I didn’t give it a chance before since I never got past the first couple of songs. Will have to give Suck It and See a relisten.

not my favorite arctic monkeys but i enjoyed it

Likte de mer nedtonete sangene best. Litt lite melodiøst i de raske låtene. Ble litt for like.

It took me a LONG time to review this album. I’m usually good about listening to an album in a day and maybe listening to it again in the morning before making the review. But this album really had me stumped. I sincerely couldn’t decide how I felt about the album. So I guess I’ll just list my pros and cons. Pro, they have a really great refined clean garage rock sound that I don’t think I’ve ever heard from them outside this album which I appreciate. Con, I don’t really love the singers voice, it’s not like grating but it’s very sonically the same from one song to the next. Which kinda ties into another con which is there’s not a lot of variety on this album. It’s pretty much just that garage rock sound all the way through which for some is not a negative but I like alittle mix of different flavors. Pro, this album has a raw element to it (probably from being a debut album) which I find very endearing. Honestly the biggest con is that a week later from listening to the album, I had to relisten to the album for probably the 13th time cause I couldn’t remember the individual songs, just how I felt about them as a whole. I know this sounds like a mostly negative review but it’s not. This album gave me a new appreciation for Arctic Monkeys, I always saw them as that super catchy chick band that my sister and gf love. But this album doesn’t fall into that assumption of them. This album shows a real energy that I haven’t seen or heard from them on other more memorably catchy albums. Seriously though if you like them and haven’t heard this album you are missing out. This is probably their “Pinkerton” album, which I know only makes sense if you are a die hard Weezer fan but that’s the best way to describe it. Also go listen to Pinkerton which is a much better album, but I digress. This is a stellar modern rock album that definitely doesn’t get enough love.

Certainly gritty and in-your-face and I-don't-give-a-wanker's damn. I appreciate that and the pub rock stylings. The mix is sharp, highlighting the vocals' incisiveness. I am a little distanced by the juvenile dramas that inform the album and remind me of my oldfartedness. The best cuts are Vampires and Romance, which let the music take chances, the vocal sidelined for a moment but still strong.

Where's the 3.5 button? I've got a couple of friends who are nutso for the Arctic Monkeys, and they're a band I've always meant to check out and just haven't. I mean, I've heard some stuff, but I've never really explored them. I liked this, reminiscent of a bunch of others of its era — who made who? — and I wonder if there's another of their albums I might jive better with. I think could really connect with the band, but this wasn't the album to do it. So I'm squarely between whole numbers on this one, but I'm trending down because there wasn't that one thing that just pushed me over the ledge.

This was initially a 4 for the witty lyrics and excellent songs, but on my second listen I did realize the album contains a lot of filler and is not as strong as I initially thought. The highs are excellent, but there is too much dead weight.

Nice album

Nostalgic but mid

I really like some of the songs; I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor has been in my library for a couple years. However, a full album of this sound grates a little, as I'm not usually too into the punk/grunge style. They do a pretty good job at not just being pure noise the whole time, though. 3/5

Classic album, in retrospect maybe my favorite overall of their discography. They never really recreated the vibe inherent to this record. The highs aren't as high as fwn but it's still really solid album. My overall turn away from this era of britrock does take it down a bit

I really liked the song Riot Van but was meh about the rest. I much prefer the moody vibe of AM

Came into this expecting to hate it after being drowned in AM against my will by my friends when it came out 2013. This is not that album and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Get the sense this would've been a fantastic band to see live at the peak of their powers. Unbelievable energy, these guys know how to put a hammer down.

Not a punk fan, but the arctic monkeys have a unique style and add a slightly different flavor to each of their quick romps. Strong vibes. I don't know if I'll listen to many of these tracks again, but I enjoyed the listen.

Good but lots of songs sound similar, 3/5

A perfectly good Little Rock album that nevertheless leaves something wanting. These dudes were hailed as the heirs apparent to Britrock and while they were great for a rave up back in the day it’s nothing groundbreaking. Still, there’s some certified bangers here and it starts and ends with a blast. Just wish there was a little more.

Listening to it in 2025 really doesn’t hit me like I know it would have when released. Good album but not for now me.

Pretty good, lots of energy, but i don't feel like I heard anything groundbreaking.

i do not understand the arctic monkey hype

I don’t know what it is, but I find a lot of rock albums from this time period to be lacking something. That said, the album was enjoyable at times but ultimately forgettable.

First of all, this is not a bad album. It is energetic and youthful... But not as much as too resonate with me. My main problem with this album is that it sounds very loud, to the point of feeling saturated (both my head and the songs). Either way, a decent album.

This one had a cool modern rock vibe.

Some bangers, some fillers

Never been a big fan but this is their best. At that I'm still not into this dive bar sound.

Pretty normal alt. rock, nothing super special about it but I liked it

очень тяжко, очень крикливо и панково, два часа смогла

When I started listening to this, I thought it was sounding fairly uninteresting. But, I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I love Turner's lyrics and delivery (love his Sheffield accent) and the band kicks. I'm sure their live performances must be exciting and fun.

Fine. Nothing really jumped out at me as an incredible song.

This is one of those albums that really made me love music, and started an obsession with finding more music like it. Some of the first songs I learned to play on guitar were from this record! That's why it pains me to listen to it again with more seasoned ears. In hindsight, I feel like this just doesn't hold up very well. It feels like very straightforward britpop pubrock - almost a step backward from where british music had been heading before this. Much of the songs are very similar, there's not much diversity among them beyond faster/slower, louder/quieter. With that said, the performances are solid, the production is great, the vibe is there. It just has a sense of immaturity to it that doesn't help its case at all. 7.5/10

Not too bad

Best wel een paar lekkere nummers. Fijne energie. Tekst en thema zijn mij nietszeggend - de muziek verdwijnt naar de achtergrond en maakt enkel een subtiele indruk.

Okey yani artic monkey esintileri hep aynı şekil söylüyor bayıyor muse gibi

Well let’s hear what this is all about. Music sounds like The Hives but the vocals sound like British Guy At A Party You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With.

I like it. AM is just better

So aggressively British

I've listened to Arctic Monkeys off and on for a while. Their style is a fun and they are a good diversion when you are listening to a large collection on shuffle, but I believe this is the first time I've sat down and listened to a full album and all the songs end up just blurring together, with the exception of Riot Van, which thankfully breaks up the album a bit. I enjoy their aggressively cockney accent and how much it comes through.

relentless pop. A fast listen, if boring. 3.

Expected to like this album more but didn’t.

absolutely just Alright i guess

love a bit of Arctic Monkeys, not their strongest album but I physically could not give them less than 3 stars added one of the songs to my playlist

It is decent album of punk rock type music that has been done before at a higher level. 3 stars or C.

no me llegan, los prefiero ahora más tranquilos

For one of the more recent albums on this list, I’m not sure why this is here. This was an ok listen, but I don’t see how this is noteworthy at all. Seems like a lazy choice.

I remember when this CD came out. It was a pretty big deal, but at the time is was very much of it's era. It got a lot of hype, but I remember thinking that they were just a rougher version of Franz Ferdinand, who had hit it big in the US about a year earlier. The Monkeys eventually far surpassed everything their contemporaries were doing, with a stellar sophomore album, a huge hit in "AM", and the criminally-underrated "Suck It And See". Bit it's this CD that really sticks with people, I guess because it's the first. And it's fine, but it's just fine. It's basically CBGB-style 70s punk on steroids, keeping all the lo-fi sound but quintupling the word count and depth of vocabulary. The first three songs are the ones everyone remembers, and they are quite good, but it gets really thin after that. And it's also very dependent on liking Turner's wordplay shtick, which I don't really care about. I hope they put "Favourite Worst Nightmare" on here too.

This guy's voice has always stood out to me. Like i don't know hardly anything by them, but if i hear their music in public, i know it's them. It's good, good accent, good delivery

repetitive but i liked those drums

I mean, it's perfectly listenable. I just don't get why people go crazy for this band.

i grew out of the arctic monkeys' music a while ago at this point. solid album and i understand the appeal however they do not really align with my tastes and the older i get the more grading i find alex turners voice but alas what can you do

I was never a fan of Arctic Monkeys when they came onto the scene, mostly due to this album. I just don't personally find it that interesting. And while I think it is fine, I just still don't think it is as amazing as so many say. I do think they have evolved into a more interesting and complex band, however. I just think their first two albums are too close to other indie rock at the time that was too focused on being "hip" or "sassy."

Not bad but I like the more recent arctic monkeys sound better. You can hear it start to come through in the last song on the album. This was okay though. I appreciate finally getting a newer album.

Back when they still had a bit of punk fire. It's unquestionably their best album but I don't love it. The songs that truly rip (Dancing shoes, You probably couldn't see...) make the dully ballady crap sting. Just give me riffs! Very cool that it drew a huge young audience into Britain's punk and post-punk scenes in the mid 2000s, scenes which retain their relevance today.

Vintage rock sound - Nice drums and guitar, which are standouts - Vocals are alright, as are melodies

Solid debut album, can see what all the fuss is about. That said, some of the popular songs are overplayed and therefore a bit annoying.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not Album Review Arctic Monkeys’ debut is often hailed as a defining indie rock record, but stripped of its initial hype, it feels more like a collection of energetic yet repetitive tracks. The production is deliberately raw, matching the band’s barroom grit, but this unpolished sound causes many songs to blur together. Tracks like I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and The View from the Afternoon burst with urgency, but their relentless pacing leaves little room for dynamics. Even when the band slows down, as in Riot Van, the stripped-back approach feels underdeveloped rather than refreshing. Lyrically, Alex Turner’s sharp storytelling captures the chaos of British nightlife with humour and wit, but the themes rarely evolve beyond drunken encounters and social posturing. Songs like Fake Tales of San Francisco and Still Take You Home are fun but ultimately feel one-note, and by the time A Certain Romance attempts some reflection, the formula has worn thin. While the album’s energy is undeniable, the lack of variety and depth makes it feel more like a promising start than a fully realized classic. There’s no doubt Whatever People Say I Am... had an impact, but its relentless speed and limited scope make it feel less timeless than some of its indie rock peers. It’s a fun ride, but one that runs out of new tricks before it’s over.

Don't know how truly influential this album is but I think its fairly par for the course.

One of their best

I understand that Arctic Monkeys are basically sacred and so many people love them buuuuuut I've never really been able to get THAT into them. I'm not exactly sure why but the style of vocals just really doesn't do it for me. I love the instrumentals but the vocals sound almost too radio-y to me. This is a solid debut record but I just don't care that much about Arctic Monkeys.

Something about this band has never really clicked with me. It feels like I should like them, but maybe it’s that every good moment with them is never really matched or beaten? I’ll like a song or a part of a song, but then the rest of the song sounds like all of the other songs. And they’re not bad songs, and honestly, there are some artists that have tons of songs that sound the same and I still like them. However, these guys just don’t do it for me. I can’t ignore that there is good guitar work and even some clever lyrics and songwriting, but overall it just kind of feels like 2000s music that wasn’t great then and hasn’t really cracked the decade.

Not the biggest Arctic Monkeys fan, pretty surprised with how technical a lot of their shit is. Overall it's not bad, I don't love his voice but it's alirght.

It was okay.

This is the arctic monkeys

Ok. I bet you look good on the dance floor. 3/5

I saw an English rock band album from the mid-2000s and I can’t lie, I expected to despise this. Yet as I was listening during my weekly grocery run, it wasn’t bad. Can’t say I hated it, nor did I love it, but it was a perfectly fine album. I won’t go back to it, but don’t mind that I heard it either.

I like these guys. Saw them live a couple years ago.

More like the Strokes/Vines than I was expecting.

The hits are obviously good, but this album isn’t as good as the hype

It was good, but not for me. Hard to listen to as a daily jive type album

I had to unblock the Arctic Monkeys to listen to this album because I hated AM and was sick of their songs being suggested on Spotify playlists. This album is fine, which is a huge step up for me from other Arctic Monkeys songs/albums. I wouldn't walk out of a bar if they were playing this, but I wouldn't automatically turn it off. No standout songs, but they were all pleasant enough

i dont get it

A raw and ragged style, probably better with a few more listens

This is so 2006…bangs.

Didn't like this as much as I thought I would! Too rocky & the songs all sounded a bit 'samey'. Only 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor' stood out but then that was the only one I knew.

Didn’t like it very much. It is good music but the songs sound very similar to each other and it is overall not my vibe.

Pretty good sound. First time hearing them.

okay rock album, didn't blow me away.

not bad

Pretty standard sounding early 2000 British rock. Aggressive, a lot of minor songs, a lot of drinking and girls. A lot of songs sound the same. Riot Van sounds like an heavy influence for the band Easy Life. Not my favorite although I do like a number of later songs by this band.

Well, this was a lively enough album, but to really be a fan you'd probably have to have been part of the big internet related publicity thing. And all credit to the band for how they managed all that. I didn't really notice any stand out tracks here.

no sé què dir, not too bad i guess millor q i wanna be yours mmmm seria 3.5

kinda whatever. i just dont like this style of rock it doesn't do much for me i guess

This was pretty fun, a bit better than a lot of the other very similar stuff that came out around this time.

Avoided it for a long time due to Dancefloor being overplayed as a teenager. Still prefer the mid-era albums but found some good songs I was less familiar with.

I really like the sound of it, I should listen to it again

-1st song- doesn't sound quite like my cup of tea -Fake Tales of San Francisco - I like the beginning and why is the album starting to grow on me?... WAIT ITS FIRE -very upbeat electric guitary album -Riot Van sounds familiar, reminds me of Baby Blue by King Krule guitar kinda style/strumming pattern. automatically catches my attention and its more of my preferred style of music, its more chill compared to the previous songs -Mardy Bum is interesting not in the best way -I really like the guitar intros for each song -When The Sun Goes Down - nice guitar -A certain romance- guitar solo is really catchy, I love the ending I thought I wouldn't love it but it was surprisingly good; good way to end the album I think

Cheeky British fun Nothing crazy but kinda just what I was looking for

Веселая, энергичная музыка. Типа рок. Но голос раздражает.

The album that triggered a deluge of landfill. That whole era has that weird contradiction of sounding energetically youthful while wearing the musical clothing of an older generation. I like that he has a lot to say and how he paints a vivid picture of being out on the town. But why is he so angry with all the women he wants to shag? It's self loathing isn't it? Someone ought to write a thought piece in the Observer about how Alex Turner was the harbinger of the modern crisis in masculinity or something.

It's an excellent rock album. But rock is not my type of music.

Fine 3/5

6/10 - Not my type of music but wouldn’t mind listening to it on a road trip; wouldn’t add this to my liked songs

Brought back memories.

A good listen and fun to hear this again, but I think I'd be unlikely to put it on for its own sake. If I'm looking for this vibe I'd probably tend to go with The Strokes.

Another good debut album makes the 1001 list! This one’s high energy Brit punk from the 2000s. All good, but I liked Fake Tales Of San Francisco best. Hey, hey we’re Artic Monkees (3.2*s)

Listening to this again made my liver hurt, what a time. The whole setlist is really strong, full of nostalgia, and is an overall stellar debut. Always loved how decipherable the lyrics are, you know what you're getting with Arctic Monkeys. That being said, I don't really put them on anymore. This album sorta came and went for me. On this relisten, the middle songs all blended together and at one point I felt like it was just yelling at me. Still, AM won't reach these heights again and they're far superior to other groups of this ilk (The Strokes, Franz Ferd, etc.). Classic Reeboks mention cancelled out by pronunciation of "punch" so 3.35.

It's an ok album. Never really understood the hype around Arctic Monkeys at a time when I felt Bloc Party, The Strokes, The Killers, Deathcab for Cutie, Green Day, and many more were putting out better stuff.

Who came first, the black keys or this album? The sound is identical

Arctic Monkeys is one of those bands I heard about but didn't really know. I only recognized a couple of tracks: "Red Lights Indicate Doors Are Secured" (which only has ~50M plays) and "Mardy Bum" (which has ~430M plays). Interesting that the album has a bunch of other songs with lots of plays that I didn't know: "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor", "When The Sun Goes Down", etc. In the end the album didn't rise above a 3 for me.

Mainly familiar with the couple songs that got play on Kexp. A lot of it reminded me of The Strokes, but punkier. Despite that, only about half the album had my attention.

I learned about this band after AM came out. I think I did a listen of their back catalog, but I can't be sure. This is a good debut. They have a different rhythm than other bands in the genre, and that's noticeable here. In my opinion, they needed some time to develop, but it's an admirable start, and it still holds up, but it's still missing something. It's got all the bits, they just don't quite have them in the right places. They will figure that out in the next few albums. Overall, a solid debut with promises that they follow through with.

This was fine. Straightforward rock, and I always like hearing non-US voices. Not particularly memorable

I really did not rate this. Some of the last few songs were interesting, but...wow I did not feel like it was a good use of my ears. Tight band, but... not for me, samey.

Too garage band for my liking but the voice was ok

There’s no real big negatives for me here beside I just wish it was weirder, more experimental idk. All songs here know what they’re doing, they’re just all doing similar things. Good stuff.

Very good, but not on that next level of greatness.

Great album that has got better with time

I liked it

10 Mile Stereo does something to my brain.

Arctic Monkeys was never my favorite 00's indie rock band, but their debut is still quite a good album, albeit nothing groundbreaking. Also impressive they became instantly as successful as they did considering the sheer amount of band of this genre existed at the time. Key tracks: The View from the Afternoon I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor When the Sun Goes Down

Great album, a song here and there that doesn't keep up the standard but overall I really enjoyed this one. High 3.

I guess now I know why I can’t name a single AM song.

nothing super exciting, but pretty decent.

Я буду тем человеком и скажу, что раньше было лучше. Лучшая песня - Mardy Bum.

This album is fine and dandy, but I didn’t find it especially appealing. It’s ok. Some good moments of high energy and some good lyrics. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-whatever-people-say?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

it sounds like Blur if Damon Albarn's voice went up a few octaves and he applied a more annoying affectation to his voice. Outside that its not bad, pretty generic English rock. Some clever lyrics here and there, nice breakdowns, but I'll be damned if I wasnt thoroughly annoyed at some points. It keeps this high tempo that gets exhausting. Still Take You Home is a fantastic example, it just runs a bit too fast, but has a great breakdown, instruments are on point, but lead vocals, ugh.

Again, was hoping to like this better — maybe I like their later albums more? Bouncier tracks like From the Ritz to the Rubble and A Certain Romance were enjoyable but too much else sounded similar.

Non memorable British 2000s rock.

Some vivid stories but probably won’t come back to it

Enjoyable alt punk rock vibes, but awfully repetitive.

Not bad. Not great. Just average alt-punk rock.

Enjoyable but without the real bangers of AM and Favourite Worst Nightmare.

Bah. Every song sounds the same.

Not my style of music but this is about as good as this genre gets. 3.5 for me

Clever lyrics at times but none of the songs stuck with me for very long.

I liked it, will probably listen again. Nothing stood out to me as a certified banger.

This album is both an interesting and understandable inclusion to this list. Arctic Monkeys brought post-punk revival/indie rock to a broader audience. Where Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, and The Futureheads set the stage, Arctic Monkeys scored a big hit with this debut. The vivid, relatable story telling about youth and night life in Alex Turner’s lyrics and the energy of the compositions make for a fun album. I can appreciate the album and how vital it was/is for people. I think had I not explored the aforementioned bands before this came out, this album would have been on heavy rotation. Alas, I had moved on to my post-rock obsession and this felt a tad repetitive. Stand out track: Riot Van and Red Light Indicates Doors are Secured

This takes me back to senior year of HS. When this came out it sounded so fresh compared to the slew of post hardcore/emo bands that were still dominating MTV.

It's good. I remember them being huge when this came out, and I never got a chance to really dive in. It's nice that I got a chance to listen to this now.

Felt a little one note, but there were some nice deviations

Not my thing

Really enjoyed listening to this. It's all in a bit too narrow of a range for me to get super excited about it as a full album. But I'd perk up in my chair anytime one of these tracks came on a playlist.

This is getting a bit repetitive but this is another one where I knew the hits - when this was released I was seeing a lot of live bands and you could almost guarantee Look Good on the Dance Floor was played at the indie disco afterwards - but never really bothered to investigate further. It's okay. I like the energy and the slice-of-life lyrics (which is why later stage Arctic Monkeys doesn't seem like it is for me). It does have quite a few Young Band Just Starting To Find Their Feet issues. My least favourite one being the tendency to put *all* your ideas is one song.

pretty good Fav song: i bet that you look good on the dancefloor

I kinda like this. Some catchy riffs in there too.

Not really for me. Every song sounds like the one before it. A good album, but not my style

I liked aspects of this, not much to take away. May revisit at some point to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Whatever people say I am supposed to like, that’s what I’m not always gonna like as much. Good post-punk feel that was an overall enjoyable listen. But the songs just weren’t as distinct as I expected and they started to run together. I wouldn’t turn the dial if this came on again, but probably won’t be seeking it out much more either.

Nice little album. Just didn’t have any standout moments that would take me to a 4. Prob a 3.25.

A lot of nice Indie Rock Songs

It's alright, was surprised by some aspects of the project and enjoyed it then and there. I usually feel this type of music is mostly forgettable and bland. Decent listen though.

i LOVE 505 by them so this was lowkey a letdown, kinda boring but also phineas and ferb coded. couple bangers 3/5

6/10 - I like the other arctic monkeys songs more. They are just more popular so they grew on me. The only song that I felt was similar to the newer songs was Mardy Bum, which I liked. The rest were pretty good but not amazing.

Started actually quite well, then ok, but in the end quite boring.

What a breath of fresh air this was at the time. The follow up was better in my view. A bit of a patchy album, I was a bit old for it but you can't deny it's impact or the few absolute classics on it.

I have never listened to this band, but I know a fair number of people who LOVE this band. This was pretty run of the mill mid-2000s meh for me. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing all that intriguing or interesting about it.

A lot of fun. Not necessarily indispensable.

Feels a bit like a mash-up of a few bands and styles that were popular at the time. Not really my cup of tea.

Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut on something. I don't know why I tried listening to this on multiple seperate occasions between one another wondering if my opinion would change. I was initially concerned my contempt for britpop given how commonplace it is on this ranking would affect my enjoyment of this even though the album is more of a modern derivative that essentially paved what would become the new trend for hack british musicians to leech off of. But no, every time I gave it a listen I just came out of it thinking it was just sorta decent, nothing really grabbed out at me as being something I would like to throw in a playlist either. By no means a bad listen though, and each time I appreciated the novelty of the time capsule aspect, this just oozes the mid 2000's

This displays lots of talent and a refreshed listen after many years leaves me feeling much more positively about it

Classic indie album, would have been a 5 for me a few years ago tbh. Enjoyable for sure, will listen again, but all indie kind of blends together (though you can say that for most genres, I suppose).

The chorus of you look good in the dance floor is so fucking milquetoast. Oh God, I forgot the whole album is like this. An album filled with songs with 10 seconds of a single amazing moment surrounded by utter mediocrity and blandness (4songs in) Riot Van, the only song I remembered being phenomenal on the album is still the goat Wait nvm I got home and finished listening to it, this might be one of my most personally contentious albums. FUCK this album is backloaded AS FUCK For context, for many years in highschool this WAS my favourite album of all time for quite some time. I returned to it a few years ago and thought it was mid as fuck and gave it a 4 /10 relistening to it today I think I was too harsh but it's easy to see why, the front half of this album is BAD and puts an AWFUL fucking taste in your mouth for the rest of the experience. Ima have to drop my individual track reviews for this one Length 1. "The View from the Afternoon" 8/10 2. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" 3/10 3. "Fake Tales of San Francisco" 3/10 4. "Dancing Shoes" 3/10 5. "You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Staring Straight at Me" 4/10 6. "Still Take You Home" 3/10 7. "Riot Van" 9/10 8. "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" 8/10 9. "Mardy Bum" 8/10 10. "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..." 6/10 11. "When the Sun Goes Down" 8/10 12. "From the Ritz to the Rubble" 7/10 13. "A Certain Romance" 5/10 Average = 5.77 I'm gonna round down to 5/10 for the sake of the inconsistent listening experience. But will give 3 stars. What a ride

Fun album, not something I'd go outta my way to listen to. Solid background music or something you'd hear on the radio. 3/5

The first time I listened to this album was when I was 14. I probably listened to it like ten times in one day to try and impress a girl I had a crush on. It turns out not only did she think I was a gross retard but the album she was actually talking about was some bullshit by Interpol so I have memory holed this album completely. UNTIL NOW I have never been a big fan of a vocalist with a very prominent British accent it sounds kind of lame and put-on but it definitely works for this style of music. It’s the kind of music I associate with annoying male baristas who would go on to glaze artists like Tyler the Creator and MF Doom. I’m saying this because I’m a petty person whose ability to enjoy media is hampered by thinking about the fact that somebody who irritates me likes the same thing. However the album is good, my feet are tapping to some songs even though they all kind of sound the same. Nothing here is crazy good and to be honest I couldn’t really name anything from here that’s memorable. Overall, if I had a bunch of people over at my house for beers that I didn’t know who were my age or a bit older I would probably put this on as background noise and it’d work.

This is pretty interesting sounding to me. Good strong rock vibes yet some raw rough vocals (no idea what's being sung about) and a bit irregular and discordant.. I could listen to these guys some more. 3 stars

arctic monkeys from this era is kinda mid tbh

I have become glaringly aware of the fact that this project is chock full of average britpop/90s alt brit stuff. I would argue that this is the first decent inclusion I've seen on that front in a while. Moving out of the 90s and into the 2000s, the Arctic Monkeys were at the forefront of this particular alt rock movement; America was very into "emo" type alt at the time, so the Brits were definitely holding down this particular style of alt rock, carrying the spirit of bands like The Strokes into the 2000s. I don't think American bands ever circled back around to producing this particular sound in earnest, but the lasting legacy of the Arctic Monkeys has shown that there is still an appetite for this sound. While I do think this album is a strong debut for the Arctic Monkeys, I don't believe this is the best album they have to offer, and it would not be my pick for a "must listen" from them. But once again, as I have become more and more aware of the fact that the author of this project has tried to balance music history and music significance, I guess I understand why this album would be chosen above others to represent this band.

Not as good as I remember

Interesting, different.

Pleasantly energetic

it's okay. it just sounds like the arctic monkeys really. unexceptional but alright.

I remember the hype around this was before anyone had heard a single note. I don't like being told what to like so I never bought it. Despite these heroics the songs were forced down my earphones via the Inbetweeners, Gavin & Stacey and so on. It's a slightly better than average indie album and sounds like everything else released that decade.

This was a good indie rock album - two fine guitars, bass, drums, and vocals clear and well up in the mix. Catchy tunes and certainly sounds northern English. Great debut, some bangers and some good quality filler.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I know a couple songs from these guys and enjoyed what I knew of them. I just couldn't get on board for on this. It's not bad, but it's just not good.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

i really appreciate this era of rock music because it feels very transitional and almost like some of the last of its kind. Not every song is a banger and the slower cuts are better than the garage band sessions, but very enjoyable. 1.) Riot Van 2.) Mardy Bum 3.) Red Light Indicates Doors are Secured

Am is better....but ok

Not a bad album, a lot of it sounded the same to me though. 3/5

i enjoy it, i don’t normally listen to arctic monkeys but i do like this album

Despite the fact that I took against this band at the time because of their stupid name (sorry, judge away), I'm listening to this for the first time now with a bit of nostalgia because they sound so much like those landfill indie days. That's not to say THEY are landfill, but a lot of people sounded like them. I can hear the influence initially of The Smiths, then The Strokes come out really strongly. The rest reminds me of peers like Franz Ferdinand, White Stripes, etc. It's weird to look back and hear how the early 2000s have crystallised over time into such a clear assortment of beats and guitar styles. The originality is in the lyrics and delivery, though it's not enough to make me return to listen again.

There's a very specific couple of years where this music was everywhere. This sort of "Do-it-yourself" garage type music. It has its place I think. It's sort of raw. It's not a bad album.

there were some decent songs on it but wont ever be sold by AM

Decent. I remember this album getting a lot of attention back when it was released, but it didn’t gel with me then and it still doesn't gel with me now. It makes me think of another vaguely adjacent UK rock band from around the same time (Clinic and their great album Internal Wrangler) and how I think now (and possibly thought back then) “how did artic monkeys get so big and clinic not so big?”

I remember being really into this when it first came out. For nostalgic reasons I still enjoy it, and the songs are definitely catchy and well-written. Probably won’t revisit any time soon but a fun one.

Really enjoyed the instrumental portion of their songs. The lyrics were hit and miss for me. Better than I thought it would be.

Indie rock with some punk influences that's overall very mediocre. There's some good parts but I rather listen to something else. I've actually listened to most of Arctic Monkeys albums and their early stuff, like this album, is at least better than their later works.

Fun album. Had only heard ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor’ before. I like the Arctic Monkeys!

Good album, probably the one by arctic monkeys I've listened to the least. Might have a couple songs on here in rotation, but nothing particularly stands out to me. Interesting how much they kept that general sound.

Simple Nice!

Solid debut.

Underrated in their discog I feel

Bra album, fastnade inte direkt Bästa låt: Riot van

Was so focused on finishing my homework could not distinguish one song for another even though i must have heard it like 5 times. oh well

This albums has vibes of The Strokes, The Hives, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with punk esque vibes, so if you are into that, you will enjoy.

Pretty good, but I still don't gel with it in the same way I do with the Reytons

The Arctic Monkeys wish they were The Libertines. But pretty cool though anyway. 3.75

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Riot Van When the Sun Goes Down

Although it's not my cup of tea, this album (and band) is pretty good! But my feelings are towards the 3.5/5

good yeh. stop the world is still the best 2.65

3.5. I enjoyed this.

Dunno how times I've said in here that Arctic Monkeys and bands of their ilk from the 00s never really landed with me, but it's probably a lot, so Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is far less for me than most of you. I know the hits, I didn't really know the rest, and there are some good tracks on there for sure. Fake Tales of San Francisco and Dancing Shoes are a strong pairing early in the album, Still Take You Home has a similar energy and From The Ritz...is decent towards the end. The bass work is stellar throughout, that deserves calling out, but yeah, I can respect the authenticity of it and understand that it really resonates with a demographic of people who felt it captured an era of their youth or early 20s, I was the same age as that audience but not the same sort of person so that combined with not being a great fan of the indie rock sound means I'll probably give this a 3. Plus Alex Turner really annoys me for some reason, dunno why, it's probably misplaced.

Great album to listen while exercising (cardio) A lot of hits, but when you listen entire album, you dont see much difference between musics.

I am impressed. I have no experience with the band. This is the type of album I was looking to find in this project. I don’t know how to describe it, but it is not you “let’s make 1 or 2 good songs and then grind out some filler. The instrument sting has some great grooves. I can’t say I fell in live with any particular song, but the album as a whole is good. I can just imagine what their fans say of this album. This is not going in my rotation, but if the mood strikes me, I will listen again and may check out more of their catalog.

On paper, the Artic Monkeys are a band I should like. Unfortunately, I have found they never quite do it for me. I can respect the musicality as well as the interesting lyrics, but something about their "style" never quite engages me...maybe I just hate the British?

Good raw sound in a post-punk way. Simple but lots of energy

This is a good album, but you kind of need to be in the mood for some hard-driving rock with some frenetic energy. For something more mellow, I highly encourage you to check out The Last Shadow Puppets which is an Alex Turner side project.

Though this song has my favorite arctic song on it “from ritz to rubble”. I think that there are not complete albums by them that should have maybe made the list (and maybe they will)

I still remember all the fuss when this one came out. Mick Jagger endorsed! Ok, so "I Bet You Good on the Dancefloor" is an exceptional song. Did Arctic Monkeys live up to the hype? Probably not but they are pretty damn fun. This isn't their best album (AM is) but this is a pretty dang good first album. Still a good listen too.

I always did think the arctic monkeys were overrated. That being said, I guess it was after the got oomper famous after that later album. That being said, I guess when this album came out they were a diamond in the rough. That being said, I still don’t think they’re that great after this album. Now with that being said, I did listen to this album while on a road trip and was talking the whole time. Now with that being said, there still wasn’t a song that made me say hey, stop talking I need to listen to this song. Now with alllllll that being said, I give it a three.

This is fine for super-generic indie rock. It sounds like something that would be background tracks for TV shows like Royal Pains. Unlike that TV show though, this is completely forgettable. This is a 2.5, so it gets a 3. I have no intent to ever listen to this again, nor explore anything else from this artist, but it was enjoyable enough that I don't feel like my time was wasted.

I liked it more than I thought I would. I have a vague memory of checking out early Arctic Monkeys stuff and not liking it much, but this was decent.

It's fine.

decent downloaded 4,6,8,9

I like this band.... Sometimes. Not this time

Not a good as I remembered, with more weak tunes than their later albums.

Kind of torn between this being legitimately good, energetic rock and it being kind of derivative and boring. I think it's pretty decent but it also doesn't really stand out much in a way that makes me want to listen to it again.

I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor is a longtime fave and got this review an extra star

OK, but probably won't revisit

I love it when future soft boys make an album when they’re really young and haven’t embraced their softness yet. Future soft boys make albums that are energetic and fun and loud and fast and lusty because the band is the hardest they’ll ever be because they’re 19 or whatever, but the albums are also melodic and poppy and catchy because the band are soft boys at heart. An album like that really hits the sweet spot for me and this is a perfect example of one. I don’t know what the fuck the Arctic Monkeys have been doing for the last decade or so, lounge singers on Mars or some shit, but their first two albums were great and very deserving of being on this list. And to all you future soft boys who know you are soft at heart but are super angry and cynical and wild right now and for the next year and a half or so, pick up electric guitars for God’s sake! We need more albums like this.

I had remembered the Arctic Monkeys somewhat differently. I've probably heard newer stuff from them. The album was fun. However, I won't be listening to it again any time soon. But it motivates me to listen to other things by the Arctic Monkeys again. 3/5

guys voice is too english not the best from arctic monkeys

Much to my surprise, this was actually listenable. The arrangements and the vocals were good, and I wasn't paying that much attention to the lyrics but from what I heard of them, they're above average for a rock band. I probably wouldn't listen again though.

Generic basic white girl rock

Remembered this one quite fondly, less into it this time around. I suppose it’s quite a bit better than a lot of the rest of this wave of brit rock, and it’s interesting to know that these guys went on to become a pretty big and (I think) sonically diverse band.

sharp, energetic, chock full of brit wit. the lyrics were a highlight, and those could get 5 stars on their own. musically, it doesn’t do much for me, not particularly melodic, and the melodies that are there tend to hang around the blues scale. overall a well put together collection of songs and a hell of a debut that demonstrates AM’s potential as a fall out boy of the UK (and eventually more).

I think of Arctic Monkeys as an indie band, but listening to this album. It has a lot more of a punk sound or influence then I picked up on with just the radio singles. I like the driving beat of the drums, and the overall loose, but tidy way they play. I’m on the fence about the lead singer’s voice. Sometimes I think I like it, and other times I think it’s too much. 3.5

Decent band, but do not understand the rating system unless it's a sub-sub-sub-sub genre. Nothing special about these guys.

decent, kinda mixes up together after a while
