The King of Nonces with some top noncing

First half is late stage disco perfection, second half loses a little momentum but closes strong with ‘Burn This Disco Out’. When he’s on, MJ is the best pop star to ever do it.

Forty-three years on, this disco and funk-fused masterpiece, which can now be seen the opening salvo of MJ’s one-two punch paired with “Thriller”, continues to reveal new layers of sound and emotion.

Very good! Even now it sounds fresh.

Funk-pop de los inicios de MJ. Venga, un 4.

It's always wild to me to put any of Michael Jackson's work in the context and along the timeline of his whole career. I remember when this album was released, I remember hearing quite a few of its tracks, and I definitely remember how popular it was. Then I think about how this was his fifth studio album as a solo performer -- after all the work he did as a member of the Jackson 5 -- and he was only 21 at the time. 'Thriller' and all that followed were still a few years away. Back to this album. It's outside my usual listening lane but I do find myself enjoying the songs. Most of them are very catchy and memorable, not in a negative way, and fun. There is always a bit more going on in his songs than initially meets the ear, at least for me. I really do think he was an incredibly gifted song composer and of course a spectacular performer. In the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s when he was super-huge, I was much more of a rocker, but as I listen to his music with the distance from that era, I hear how good he really was.

Wow, how this opens!!! Felt like magic listening to this album and made my day feel better and freer from the first bass line. Funky and fresh. - top tracks: don't stop til you get enough, get on the floor, off the wall - least favorite: she's out of my life

Most of the songs on here are bangers and it's one of the most fun listens I've had. Already heard this before, still fun.

While I don’t like the person you cannot look past the fact that he was a fantastic performer. Even almost 40 years later the album sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday.

Fun bop!

comsi comsa

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. We're all familiar with MJ's tunes but this one has some hidden gems for sure.

Old school MJ is always fun. He was quite an artist. This one was more filler than Thriller though.

A brilliant, funky, exuberant album. Minus one star for MJ being a creep.

I’m really into the first 3 songs, hmm but the slower burns- eg. “She’s Out of My Life”- might be too much for me, man. Tracks 5, 9 & 10 are probably my next favourites. 3.5 November 8, 2022 Edit January 2025: who pissed in your cereal, 2022 Me? "Girlfriend" and "She's Out of My Life" are still my least favourite tracks on the album, but that's like saying I don't particularly care for "The Lady in My Life" from Thriller. They're alright songs in a sea of fantastic ones

Sweet, one of those álbums that you hace to come back once and awhile

Those grooves, that voice! Grab your shoes and hit the floor, you’re gonna want to get your groove on. His licks are often mimicked but never beaten. This album is Jackson ascending the throne as King of pop on his way to Thriller where he rightly takes his place as pop royalty.

Just full of bangers. Is it possible to listen to MJ without moving?

3.5 stars - the first two songs are classic bangers but a lot of the album is influenced by the disco that was popular at the time.

Very ambitious for the young pedophile. 4/5

fun/playful disco-esque pop.

The main knows how to change a key

An iconic disco album from MJ. I've heard some of the songs here a lot, but i never get tired of hearing them. Only complaint is that by the end, the tracks get a bit boring to hear, but otherwise, great album.

4.5/5. Classic album!

Pretty strong. Album sequencing is messy but enjoyable listen overall. Feels a bit stretched.

Very good pop album

I can't believe that I haven't heard a few of these songs as singles out in the world before this.

This album is an absolute classic, and I am not disappointed with it.

Very very interesting to see a pre stardom MJ, before QJ, before the mega hits, the videos, and the iconic outfits. However, while he delivers as usual an amazing vocal performance with energy and passion, the character is not yet there in the songs, whereby, he sounds more like Kool and the Gang than his later signature self. Good album but nothing extraordinary. Pushing it to a 4 though because of his vocals and the proper production though.

MJ and Quincy Jones are unbeatable. Still a bit of hangover from his earlier stuff on here. It feels like a transitional album after the standout hits.

Can bad people make good music? Er yes

Classic!

Funk-pop de los inicios de MJ. Venga, un 4.

Can't put less for such tasty arrangements

Don't stop TIL you get enough - A bop Rock with you - this is so smooth👍 Workin' day and night - another great groovy song Get on the floor - another vibe👍 Off the wall - creepy laugh.. But l love the chorus👍 Girlfriend- Sorry Paul, don't like this She's out of my life- a slower song. Emotion in vocals good if a little faux in places (voile break at end). I can't help it - Great instrumental, not sure about ad libs It's the falling in love - duet, quite peppy feel but with almost despairing lyrics👍 Burn this disco out - fun dance song👍 Very strong album, pleasant. I prefer albums that have a bit more lyrical substance so 4/5

It was a blast from the past. I can't believe this was all the way back in 1979. Eleven-year-old me was a budding hard rock and heavy metal fan, but this release sucked me in. It was a treat to relive my youth. I was instantly transported to my bedroom listening to it on my headphones through my Technics stereo record player (because my headphones were better than my speakers). I must say, forcing myself to listen to every song (not just the hits) allowed me to discover pieces that I missed (or had forgotten about) from those days. I give this a 4 out of 5.

Really catchy and well-produced songs, but a bit too smooth and without a lot of impact.

It's a good, well-played album with some classic pop songs. But in my humble opinion, Thriller is far beyond superior. 4 stars for me.

hard to argue with this

Absolutely incredible. I have trouble listening to MJ because of the obvious reasons. It’s a personal choice and I would never tell anyone to not listen to him because of what he did. But wow — this is a fantastic listen. I love the more upbeat songs, but the slow jams are immaculate. “Girlfriend” by Macca, I believe, is such a great tune. “She’s out of my Life” is also quite moving. The slower tracks that I had never heard before really caught me by surprise. This is a must listen for all, regardless of one’s feelings about Michael Jackson.

Liked dance songs

Texting a lot of people blows, flirting is so cringe

Taking my ears on a trip through time.

Some bangers, some fillers, very tight drumming

Hard not to bob your head along with this disco-y pop. Fun, upbeat. Standout is \"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough\"

Very funky, killer bass. Makes you wanna dance.

You can really hear classic Micheal. The disco beats mixed with the classic R&B vibe really create a cohesive listening experience.

7/10. Highlights include "Get on the Floor" and "Burn this Disco Out," both underrated disco tracks.

Fun and classic

Great pop album, not a huge fan of ballads tho

All horrific accusations aside (yes, I know, bad start)... this album is just tight. Shouts out to Louis Johnson, who played bass on this record, for putting the entire thing on his whole back. Jesus Christ, just listen to the bass line in "Get On the Floor" and tell me that's not magic. The whole album is a bit frontloaded with the party jams, but the wide variety of genres is refreshing. Favorite tracks: "Get On the Floor", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Off the Wall"

IMMACULATE production and stacked with tunes

It's Jackson.

Great album. Absolutely engaged the entire time. Funky, great bass lines, and of course amazing vocals. Favorite Songs: "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough", "Rock With You", "Get On The Floor"

Amazing! 3 tracks onto my playlist!

Ooo ooo oo! POW! Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough! Waaa ooo eeee ooooooooohhhhhh! Yeeee heeee heeeee ya! (I'm having way too much fun to articulate properly how I feel about this one.) Juggernaut! Titan of musical talent and prowess! Perfect listening for a Friday! I'll never get any work done because I can't stop dancing. I just love it, it's the epitome of disco fun and funk. It's the falling in love with this album all over again that's making me high... ooo ooo oo!

its not thriller but the first couple of songs make it pretty clear how he got there

Disco at its best, a bunch of absolute bangers on this one. Some of the B sides are pretty forgettable though. I’m in the camp that Thriller is the better overall album.

-Nice funky beat in "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" -Nice fast beat and trumpetology in "Workin' Day and Night" -Fat bass in "Get on the Floor" -Fun funk disco in "Burn This Disco Down" -I actually didn't like his singing that much, or at least, I liked most of the other parts of the song better

Why have I never listened to MJ outside of later big hits?? Funky, disco-ish, and catchy as hell. Fun album

A stunning and pumping A side - yet a sagging B-side - still a great record.

I cannot and will not stop until I get enough

Ah Michael. Some mega all time hits on here and some hidden gems. Minus 1 star for pedophilia I guess

A classic.

I'm not the biggest fan of disco music and therefore I both prefer MJ's early Motown stuff as well as his later pop hits along the lines of Thriller. That said, this is still a very good album and I enjoyed having it on.

Cult but still not that unique

Packed with disco hits and classics, if you love disco and MJ, you'll love this album.

Great album. More disco than I remember. But also a portent of things to come.

I mean, he is the King of Pop.

A coronation. Best track: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

Getad med såsen

Disco bangers, simple as

a step before thriller

This was pretty great, actually! Perversely sounded way less dated than "Bad" because it wasn't using synths. If there weren't a couple of overly saccharine ballads I could have stretched to five stars. Fave track - "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough", for sure...

04/27//22

Very strong opening wooo! It immediately has me moving. This album is a masterpiece, at least Side A. Very of its time but absolutely still fun to listen to today. Oh Michael. Why?

She's Out of My Life is a horrendously sappy ballad, but everything else is pretty great!

Kicks off with an absolute banger and then slides into a decent album but never really reaches the heights of track 1

Great album with some bona fide classics. A stepping stone to the greatness that was to come ...

Michael Jackson's Back In Black. Funky little Disco album.

The disco tracks are 5/5 alltimers, the slower pop songs are predictably sexless and bring the album down.

I will give this a 4 despite the second half being much weaker than the first. "Girlfriend" and "She's Out of My Life" kills the mood a bit for me, but I have to concede that the first side is some of the best disco pop you'll ever hear in your life.

The first half is pretty awesome but then it gets quite boring and cheesy (in a bad way). Not my favorite from the King of pop, but still very good

Unfortunately, I had never heard this Michael Jackson and after just one listen, I think it became my favorite. Incredibly groovy bass, sensational horns and quite sophisticated synthesizer on a few tracks make it a very developed pop album.

4 on first listen

Real hecking good

Surprised at how many songs I already knew. Great fun listen.

Really enjoyed most of this album, with notable exceptions Girlfriend and She's Out of My Life. Surprisingly good, given the lack of hits.

Two awful songs really weighing this down.

oui pas mal

Gran disco de pop disco. Animado y divertido

One of the first of many solo albums of Micheal Jackson. Still young, but not a child, this album is able to meld disco, funk , a dash of jazz, and a little early techno. Quite an achievement. While the monster hits are Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You, much of the album will not disappoint. Off The Wall are any other musicians A sides but if there are B sides on this album Off The Wall, Girlfriend, and I Can't Help It are those. Track seven shows there rarely seen vulnerability of Micheal as his star began to shine white hot. Great album.

I mean, it's Michael Jackson. A really great, funky album that hits the highs of 'Thriller,' but doesn't maintain them as well. The last few songs on this album were just okay and it sort of detracted from the overall experience.

First album, funky,almost disco sound

Made me want to dance! Solid album but "She's Out of My Life" did not belong on here

Still a legend but let’s forget about post 80s

I love little Michael

4,5; Michael Jackson is just the best, unique, inimitable style, beautiful thing

I haven't listened to Michael Jackson with intent before. I've only heard his hits. This album is a good indication that he wasn't just a singles artist. I found that I enjoyed more than half of the album. More Michael Jackson will be making it onto my playlists

Gutes Album

A classic. Put MJ on the map but not quite his best. We have to wait for Billy Jean for that.

A perfect case for this list. I had no idea he was like all disco for this debut album. The man had endless talent for arrangement and melody. Lots of booty shakers and lovely ballads. And those bass lines…

What’s not to love about MJ. Solid album

a good pop album

I have to separate the man from the music. Michael was the first artist I ever got "into" when I heard Bad when I was around 7. He is the King of Pop and for good reason. This is a good album but not my favorite.

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough is pretty explosive. Rock With You is another one. Off The Wall is buttery smooth. Damn this whole album is a pop disco masterpiece.

I enjoyed the vocals the most, not exactly my type of music, but it was a great album. Favorite Songs: She’s Out of My Life, It’s the Falling in Love

Not really my genre, but nonetheless I was VERY impressed. Lots of really interesting, funky, groovy moments. Lots of talent. I’ve heard tons of stuff like this from the 80s, but from what I’ve listened to none were able to rival this. Many imitators and wannabes that wished they could have made this album.

It’s all toe tapping, dance floor friendly classics (with the exception of the dreary She’s Out Of My Life) and Quincy Jones bring his A game to make an entertaining lush sound for MJ’s really quite astonishing vocal stylings - the breathy grunts and clicks influenced pop music forever, lending what is essentially throw away music the impression it is coming from an emotional place, so emotional that sounds will do better than words. And it works!

Great disco, soul and funk sounds, a classic and one that I definitely want to go back to

I give it a 7. It’s a great album with some really good songs, if you can get past what an awful human he was.

Some eternal classics, but by the second half of the album I lost interest.

Lovely

Pakirala sam kofer dok sam slušala ovaj album. "It's the falling in love" je JAKO groovy.

Smooth. Top tracks: Burn this disco out, don’t stop til you get enough, off the wall

Tää musta Michael Jackson on ihan jeppiskamaa. Hyvää ja menevää tanssipoppia. Rock with you on tietysti se hittibiisi, mutta muutenkin kokonaisuudessaan vahvaa suorittamista.

Not as good as the more idiosyncratic Thriller, Bad and Dangerous, the shackles of motown and disco are yet to be thrown off but still one hell of debut with some absolute classics.

Not quite the 5* I thought it was: forgot how much of a drag the ballads/slower songs can be in the second half. But the rest are absolute jams.

The best of this album IMO: - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Rock With You - Get On the Floor - Off the Wall - I Can't Help It (the beginning made me realized that it was sampled by De La Soul for "Breakadawn"...!) A classic!! Let's dance! Let's groove! When the album ended I was like "That's it?" Needed to be longer. But it was juicy. 4.0/5

good stuff

Probably my favorite MJ album. 8/10 1. Off the Wall 2. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough 3. Workin' Day and Night

Still sounds very slick and modern. Pre vocal-tic MJ – the guy could really sing! Plus some tunes I'd never heard before that shoulda been singles. This was a surprisingly pleasing experience.

I stopped when I got enough

Early Michael Jackson - Off the Wall, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough. A couple songs sound like funky disco.

Heard it all, but can appreciate how amazing it was in its day

starting off strong with the first song rock with you is so good never heard get on the floor but I like it! lots of classics

All the funky dance songs are some of the best tunes of all time. All of the melancholy ballads are embarrassing. Thankfully the balance is more towards the former, but the latter really take this thing down a bit.

Good songs with great, funky bass lines.

This is one of those LPs that is always on your backlog somewhere to dive into "some day." And then when you do, you realize you've been listening to this album your whole life. It's full of MJ cuts that are seered into the fabric of anything R&B, funky or soul that has appeared for 40+ years after Michael Jackson burst out of the family and into the universe with this album. It's a vibe, an atmosphere. You won't get your mind blown but you're dancing and you don't care.

It's aight. Just a Micheal Jackson album. High-quality production, pretty good. MJ isn't a personal favourite.

A very magical album. Don't Stop, Rock with you, She's out of my life all wonderful. Not sure about the title track.

As a kid I was a massive fan of Michael Jackson during the Thriller period, and also listened to the successor Bad quite a lot, but never gave the predecessor and break-through album Off the Wall too much attention, except maybe for the amazing opening track. Upon this revisit, I really appreciated the overall production (Quincy Jones) and execution of the songs. There are some really good, catchy, songs on here (e.g., the opening track, the title song, and I Can't Help It), but also several songs that are less captivating (e.g. Girlfriend and It's the Falling in Love). In my opinion, Thriller is still a significant step up from this album, so I'll leave it at 4 stars.

Brought back some memories of listening to this album over and over and over again as a kid. The first half is still pretty amazing, but it falls off sharply starting at "Girlfriend". "She's Out of My Life" is ok, but is a little cheesy as well. Still solid album.

i loved off the wall

Well, the album started off strong, but then it all started to sound the same. I can absolutely understand songs like "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough' and 'Rock With You' being on lists of 1001 songs you must hear, but as an entire album, it's hard to see. In fact, I noticed this first with when listening to Bad and I'm picking up on it again here, but this album also feels more consumable in pieces as opposed to trying to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. I do think that 'I can't Help It' redeems the latter half of the album, from being mostly forgettable. My tastes aside, it's undeniable that this album was massively influential on countless artists, so for that alone, I can't really bring myself to rate it below a four. In this case I think the album is great, less for what I hear in the music, then for what most people hear in the album.

I am not an actual Michael Jackson fan, but this record is surprisingly groovy. I like it.

Great ofc

Trying to separate the art from the artist this really is a banger

Excellent disco album, prefer thriller or bad but this is great

Loved it, would not have chosen this to start with but glad I did. Tracks 6, 8-10 less familiar and could have also been singles. Solid quality.

Thriller

Pretty solid album. I hate She’s Out of My Life.

Such a strong start with Dont Stop and Rock with You, but the rest of the songs start to sound the same. Gets a 4 bc they are good and as Tom put it, some of the albums on this list are much more questionable, but really a big name artist 3.

Not as great as thriller, but another killer album from Micheal Jackson. I'd say you could get away with only one of his albums, but taking this one off with so much other garbage on the list would be an insult.

Great album. Of course, Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough is THE song.

First track banger straight off the bat! 2nd track big tune too. Yeh few bangers, class, big energy. Not as many hits as I hoped for but still mint, 4/5

He is not the king of pop without reason. His sound is still pop and still fresh even after more than 30 years. Not generic pop music, but a really great mixture of jazz and soul music that is extremely catchy! I'll give it 4 stars because I know that is not the best of MJ yet, but it's a great album.

Absolute Classic MJ. I have never previously listened to this album but there were several songs that are so ubiquitous that you can't not have heard them. Funky disco vibes throughout and mellowing towards the tail end of the album. Best: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough; Rock With You Worst: It's The Falling In Love

"He could have died in 1990. We would still have Beat it and Thriller, and he would have died before being a pedophile" Rios, Ronald

I've heard so many of these songs before in the background, but I've never listened to them seriously. Glad I did.

Ever since that documentary a few years ago, it’s been really hard for me to hear any of his songs without feeling really uneasy. That being said, it’s impossible to deny the bangers on this album.

Solid album. Bass line on Girlfriend rips.

What a great album. Eternally great songs, perfect production and vocals. I think the album is most successful when Jackson/Jones lean into the era and embrace the disco. The dance songs ("Don't Stop," "Off the Wall," "Workin' Day and Night," "Get on the Floor") are the best on the album and still considered to be classics, while the popier love songs ("Girlfriend," "It's the Falling in Love," "She's Out of My Life") fall a little flat. "Rock with You" splits the difference and is just sweet and fun to listen to. Fave songs: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Workin' Day and Night, Get on the Floor

Listening to older Michael Jackson albums between The Jackson 5 days and Thriller is pretty interesting

Starts waaaaaay to strongly, the album after Rock with You is not bad (HAH!) but is not as good as Don't stop til ya get enough and Rock with You. Very solid release but weaker than the later output I assume.

Classic disco era Quincy Jones genius.

I knew the hits, how can you not love these cheesy ass songs.

Michael's called the king of pop for a reason.

Amazing energy in the start. Bit more melancholic towards the end, but still very nice. The quality of the recording is amazing. Overall really good album.

The start of Jackson's incredible run of albums, and one of the landmarks of the disco era besides Bad Girls and Saturday Night Fever. All tracks are bangers, thanks to Jackson's extension use of falsetto to excite the audience. The album is full of bangers due to this attribute, with the first side aiming to get listeners on the dance floor, and second feeling more like the after-party (except the closing track). Favorite tracks are, no shocker, "Don't Stop...", "Rock With You", and "Off the Wall". Maybe because I'd been rocking to them growing up. But it doesn't stop there with funky innovation sound and production as in "Girlfriend" that further define the disco era.

Pretty good for a child molester

Classic MJ, good pop album

is this considered disco or pop

Really fun to listen to, production + instrumentals are top notch

The hits are located at the beginning of the album.

First time I have listened to this album in full. Several classic songs, but I'm looking forward to some of Jackson's even better albums.

Classic 80's

Love it

muito champ, xibo, qunostopo, donstotiuiugeteno.

Great album…. Too bad he’s not around

Cracking disco influenced pop.

L'énergie dont j'avais besoin

Hard not to enjoy at least the opening track. Quintessential music that cemented THE Michael Jackson that's most widely known, and for good reason. First side is like a non-stop dance party with MJ as the MC keeping things alive. The energy is infectious! The second side mellows out, embracing a more chilled out vibe without sacrificing too much of the fun. (Quincy Jones is on production and is a master of the craft). She's Out of My Life feels more like an obligatory ballad than an earnest entry; Gotta make the runtime quota somehow I guess. It's clear that side B is the weaker of the two, but it's definitely still solid music at the end of the day.

Brilliant ! Brought back memories of the time.I want to give it 5* but then I know it’ll go straight to the top so it’s a high ****

Michael near his peak .. definitely a recommended listen. Fun dance tunes and sentimental ballads. Not quite a 5 for me but that might be personal genre preference.

Burned out toward the end but DAMN the first few songs are absolute hottrax... could use more MJ albums in this list, anyone who has ears can enjoy this

Funk basics

I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting for Michael Jackson. Still slow towards the middle, and I wouldn't want to hear most of these songs very often. A low 4

Le faltó hee hee

Very nice album... soul/disco balance

What do Jared Fogle and this album have in common? Let me tell you... "What comes first? Don't stop till you get enough". Of course I'm referring to Jared's love for delicious subway sandwiches. Nah but seriously, this was a really great album and I did enjoy it since I've never really listened to it before. I've always been a thriller guy, and by saying that, I can't say that it's better than thriller. Still good though and I'll definitely listen to it more now but, alas, I cannot betray my beloved thriller. So with every listen of off the wall, I'll listen to thriller twice.

This album starts out with a BANGER. Having listened to this song since hearing it in Rush Hour 2 (did Chris Tucker sing it better?) I feel like I still haven’t gotten enough. But also, ever since everything came out about Michael and his proclivities, I haven’t listened to him as much so maybe I’ve had enough. It is very hard to discuss Michael without bringing up not just the many many allegations but also the way he grew up and was treated by his father. While I don’t like making excuses for others, I do like understanding why people are who they are and when looking at his life it is easy to see why he did the things he did. I have never actually listened to a Jackson album all the way through so I am excited to see where this takes me. Rock with You has a nice beat to it but I wonder who he is referring to when he talks about all night. I’m not a historian so I do not know the timeframe between this album and his ranch. This does feel like the kind of song I would have danced to at the club if I was alive back then. I am DIGGING Workin’ Day and Night, the beats that were chosen for this album are so good and his “catching of breath” or “yipping” I’m not sure what you would call it, is on point here. He says someone has him working day and night, maybe that is a reflection of the countless hours his father forced him to practice and rehearse. I’m sure after being around his dad he would be excited to get out and dance to this beat as well. Get On the Floor starts out as a great disco type song, very funky. Off the Wall speaks to me right off the bat because I was the guy who was on the wall not wanting to dance at school functions which is funny because I love to dance. Maybe if I had heard this song back then I would have been inspired to get off the wall. He says to leave the 9-5 on the shelf and just enjoy yourself which is a great message for someone like me (even though I work 8-4). This is one of my new favs of the album. Girlfriend is a weak song to me, certainly sounds nice, but for some reason I can’t picture him having girlfriend. She’s Out of My Life is the same story as before, but I won’t deny that he has pipes and sounds great on this track. It’s interesting that his album is a lot of fun dance tunes but then there are a few slow dances in there as well and ends with Burn This Disco Out for that last dance of the night. Looking at the album artwork, it’s easy to see someone who is ready to get off the wall and dance but knowing what we all know and where he ended up, it is also incredibly sad. This album was his first solo so I wonder if he struggled breaking free from his fathers grasp and struggled making this just for fear of what his father thought or how he would be treated.

The disco sound is definitely dated, but there are some really good songs on this album. I can't believe this was his fifth solo album. I thought it was his first.

Además viene el súper hit "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough". Creo que lo disfruté, aunque tiene canciones dispares, por ejemplo, "She's Out Of My Life" en realidad me aburrió mucho. "Off the Wall" y "Burn This Disco Out" son otras dos que destaco de acá. 8/10

Groovy

Such a good dance album, but on the tunes where the tempo slows so goes my interest. Also, how the hell did he come up with the notion to cram the words “keep on with the force don’t stop” into like two notes? Also also, that song’s about Star Wars.

Good album. Couple borin ones.

Very strong start with "Don't Stop." Some work themes on this album, very RCE. Ended strong too, I liked that disco song. Overall a fun album, little to complain about.

god dam, don't stop til you get enough is a 10/10 song Micheal wants you to just enjoy music and feeling free, and expresses it amazingly with an endless well of disco grooves slows down in the second half, but bangers all around

Another solid album from the king of pop.

Obviously heard this a million times, but damn, it is a good'n through and through.

he heee¡

Classic Michael Jackson

have not listened to a full Michael Jackson album before. some good songs for a dancin playlist on here.

This morning I'm listening to 'Off the Wall' by Michael Jackson. I was looking on the Internet to see where things are at with Michael being a pedophile. Do we give him a free pass? It's become difficult to continually have to separate the art from the artist. And what sort of responsibility does MJ's asshole Dad Joe have to do with how his son turned out? So this landmark album that combines all the greatest the world of music (pop, rock, disco, etc) has to offer in 1979. It's difficult to know what to do here. I guess try and listen to it - solely focusing on the music and production. The music is fun and bubbly. The ballady songs towards the end of the album has dragged it down for me quite a bit. As long as the music kept moving, I didn't have as much time to think about how creepy MJ was in real life. The last couple of songs are better and have tied up the album nicely. Takes me back to when I was a kid, and this talented artists I didn't know much about - moonwalked on the Grammys. It was literally the biggest thing to happen at the time. I miss those times and that artist. Before it all got fucked up.

Super album van legendarische artiest

Quite alright. It's MJ so it's hard for it to be bad. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough is the obvious hit from this album.

some iconic MJ hits, good classic pop

Classic, objectively good album, but wasn't in a great mood for it that day

good album start tbh

Danceable as fuck, never sat still during the entire listen. Feet off the ground and ears a lovin' this is amazing.

God med enkelte missere

det svänger faktiskt ganska bra.

get on the floor baseline is god

Its good its just hard to listen to with all we know now

The “separate the art from the artist” argument is especially difficult with Michael Jackson because so much of his music is built around intimacy, longing and desire. Whether or not others can compartmentalise, I can’t help hearing those emotions through the lens of the allegations against him. It fundamentally changes the way the music feels, making it impossible for me to separate the performance from the person behind it. Stars are for the work that many others contributed to the album.

There's really no truly great song on this album. To me, it's a fairly basic album and while most songs are good, there's no reason to come back to it. I Can't Help It was by far my least favorite.

Good album, this guy really was the bees knees back then eh

Prefer this era of Michael Jackson for sure. Would definitely get me on the dance floor

Rock With You is my favorite of his but the rest of this album doesn’t do much for me. First half’s interesting as transition between disco and the 80s, back half kinda sucks

A classic

There are standout moments, but while this was his massive breakthrough as a solo artist, to me it doesn’t stand up like some of his later successes as an album bursting with blockbuster material. The most successful for me are the upbeat and frankly more aggressive self-penned material. Aggressive is relative of course, but the other upbeat numbers, mostly by Heatwave’s Ron Temperton, seem soft by comparison. “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough” has the snap, panache and vibrancy that would come to inhabit the core of MJ’s best uptempo hits and possess his feet (and any listener with a pulse and the slightest whiff of a sense of rhythm). He got better at delivering these, but for now it’s head and shoulders above everything else here. Even “Rock With You”. I understand “She’s Out of My Life” was a hit which, although I find astonishing given its lack of beat, is comforting given its strong chord progressions and impressive melody. The Stevie Wonder song is a winner, but it sounds like Stevie-lite, not Michael Jackson. The McCartney song is not a winner. There are steps in the right direction toward his superstardom here, I’m just surprised he managed to achieve the huge leap that he did with this one.

Don't stop 'til you get enough - 5 Rock with you - 4 Workin' day and night - 3 Get on the floor - 3 Off the wall - 3 Girlfriend - 3 She's out of my life - 2 I can't help it - 3 It's the falling in love - 3 Burn this disco out - 3

I felt bad streaming this, knowing I was contributing some tiny amount of money to his estate

*1979. *Don't Stop Til You Get Enough and Rock with You. *This is a fun time. Very classic poppy Michael. RATING - 7/10

Not good enough to overcome the dissonance of the person behind the album

I was snootily dismissive of this when it came out. I'm glad I got more open minded as a got older. Lotta good stuff on here, Quincy Jones has the magic touch. However any time I see David Foster in the credits I cringe. "It's The Falling In Love" does nothing to tell me that cringe is inappropriate.

Very nice, clean production and sound, Jackson's voice is not particularly my favourite in terms of style but undeniably excellent. Liked "Rock with You" and "She's Out of My Life". Impossible to listen without tapping ones toes.

Resolutely ok.

First two songs are strong, the rest is ok.

Did not care for the second half as much as for the first. The groovy, very disco songs are my favorite, the ballads unfortunately are not. Nonetheless, I loved listening to this.

Sure, whatever, some more MJ. It's fine, maybe even pretty good. But not what I will be listening to.

Não é o melhor álbum

some bangers

They say this is the *actual* best album. There’s that other one that is so beloved, but the real heads know it started here. That’s what they say anyway. And so I wanted to like it. And honestly it’s not that bad. Parts are good even. I think maybe I’m just out on pop in general. Plus there’s 80s production all over this thing which is just an absolute ass-whipping. 3 stars

A couple of absolute classics, but mostly dated and not that good.

Its a great album, I just rarely want to listen through to the end.

llike it's good but too happy for me idk

From a musical perspective it's good, a 4 star record. But these days listening to it knowing what he did it honestly made me quite uncomfortable. Besides that a lot of the songs just come off as cliche and insincere. It's fine!

Great record. An easy 4*. But Michael Jackson is a child rapist, so he gets a one star penalty.

As a whole, I wasn't all that impressed with this album. It started of hot with two really strong tracks, but the rest wasn't anywhere near as good. A big chunk of songs toward the middle/end were pretty bland to me. The last track was probably the best after the first two. I think maybe it has to do with it being more disco-leaning. The genre lends to a lot of repetition with a danceability focus. It can be groovy and funky, but too often just gets boring for me. That happened here, especially since I wasn't listening anywhere close to a disco environment. I easily tuned out during a few songs, which feels like it shouldn't happen on an MJ album. Despite the issues, I definitely wouldn't say this is bad. The first few songs do a lot of work to elevate it as a whole. The rest didn't reach that level, but still were fine enough. There were only a couple tracks that I would say I didn't like. That leaves it more in the OK/good territory for me. Overall: 2.8/5

Loved half of the album; didn’t care for his ballads.

I liked the songs I knew. The rest were just okay.

Good enjoyable album

Vooral 'She's Out Of My Life' is echt een draak van een nummer. Anders een 4, nu net een 3.

It’s a decent album, but I’m generally not a fan - for multiple reasons (the obvious ones, and due to Earth Song being on repeat on Top of the Pops when I was eight) Favourite track: I Can’t Help It

The bass pulls it up to a 3. Without that it’d be a meh 2.

Its not bad.

Let's seperate the artist from the art for a moment and realize this pedophile was really good at music (and I've never been an MJ fan). BUT, as strong as this album started off, it really goes downhill after a couple of songs. Why do pedophiles always have to ruin everything?

Some right classic tracks, but also a number of just average stuff.

I'm having an internal struggle with tragedy of a man. To be fair I'll give Quincy Jones a 5 and MJ a 1 cause I just can't look at the music and not see the man that sung it. 1+5=6 6/2=3

1001 gods trying to bait me into watching this movie. Never been much of an MJ fan, but this album is an easy listen for the most part. These slow ballads make me want to fall asleep though NGL. Don’t really see it as anything more than some background party music (the bouncy songs), but it’s well done. Quincy Jones production doing wonders here. I just don’t feel anything beyond the production with MJ. There’s so much music of these same genres that make me FEEL things. This is groovy and nothing more to me. Sorry Zachary.

Genuinely thought I’d have heard this before but aside from the hits, I didn’t actually know a lot of this album. It’s good and easy to see why he became the superstar he did, but ultimately just not my thing.

Honestly I thought this would be more fun but I just found it quite annoying the longer it went for... Maybe it's because needs dictated that I had to hear it whilst studying rather than partying... Even the bangers are a bit boring danceable-but-heard-it-before vibes. Still nice to have a bit of disco!

Michael goes disco and it actually comes off pretty well. Favorite track: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

A couple of good songs at the start of the album, ones that still get play today, but the rest is just middle-of-the-road stuff.

RATING: 6/10 HIGHLIGHT: Rock With You LOWLIGHT: She’s Out of My Life

this was probably such a damn banger when it came out

Whilst both _Thriller_ and _Bad_ were staples of my youth, this only came along later and so I don't have anywhere near the same attachment to it. It also lacks the big name tracks that made him who he was but when it's good, it's very good and it's best in that respect when it's doing funky, poppy disco, which it does for most of the first half and the closer. When it goes into more laid back soul oriented track, as it does for most of the second half, it lacks the punch. It's a decent album, but I don't really reach for Jacko and if I did, it would be one of the two albums that follow this or a greatest hits.

Ridiculous talent and upbeat music

Groovy

cool jacksons

According to Wikipedia, music journalists debate whether “Off The Wall” is Michael Jackson's best album. Having listened to it, I can't understand this debate—it doesn't hold a candle to “Thriller,” nor to “Bad,” and in my opinion, not even to “Dangerous.” Instead, what we hear here is a talented singer performing above-average disco-pop songs with funk and soul elements, but who is clearly still searching for his own style. Certainly relevant as a historical document, but on its own, it’s more of a “nice-to-know.” For me, a 3.5.

It’s a 3 … wouldn’t have given it more even if, you know, stuff.

Very funky, I like it, so did my Mamm

When to listen: At a bar mitzvah or wedding. I like disco, funk. I like Michael Jackson (the art, not the artist.) But this album has too much baggage and associations in my mind for me to like or appreciate it. It just doesn’t hit for me.

He was ahead of his time! Discovering some new songs: I Can’t Help It (instrumentals remind me of Labyrinth) Pretty good album but it felt a little short. Started off super upbeat and mellowed out. 7.5/10

Fine pop album just not something I want to listen to

I think this album is interesting. I would personally put this above thriller, it sounds more like music Michael would make rather than music Michael thinks the majority of people would enjoy. Thriller feels incredibly engineered to cater to the masses but this feels more personal. I can't put my finger on why I dislike the 2nd half. It's just uninteresting. I'm not a huge fan of soul in the first place but this feels like especially dull soul. There's also a disconnect between how energetic his voice is compared the backing. 3

6.0/10 A few amazing hits but rest of album is pretty average

pretty good all throughout haven’t really got favs

The earlier the better for MJ's musical output.

great bass sound and funky grooves, the production is immaculate but i feel it sacrifices emotion in favor of accesibility i cant point out specific things about the songs that don't work or that I dont like, however they feel a bit flat and empty mjs delivery is on point gotta givem that

It’s a landmark album and I knew it as an album (as opposed to its long term status) at the time. But I always respected it rather than liked it very much. I didn’t much like the music and I never bought the Michael Jackson persona, even before it was clear what a weirdo he truly was. The best tracks here are the harder, funkier ones. A fun thing I noticed while looking at the video to Don’t Stop…Jacko dad-danced his way through that looking utterly uncool. How did he become a dancemaster within a couple of years of that?!

Nota: 3.3

Don’t stop ‘till you get enough - Upbeat tempo and real groovy beat. Michael pairs high pitched singing with catchy lyrics. Although it becomes a bit repetitive, overall it’s a really fun song. Rock with you - The drums and synth create a nice atmosphere, the usage of the synth build up to the lyrics is nice. Michael’s voice is outstanding, he has gone for a slightly deeper voice in this song contrasting with the first song. Could definitely dance to this song. Workin’ day and night - Michael’s heavy breathing/panting stands out very heavily in the beginning. The percussion sets a fast pace for Michael’s singing, making the song feel rather energetic. Get on the floor - Dramatic buildup at the beginning. Michael’s voice echoed by the background singers is a lovely addition. I enjoyed how his voice was used in the background alongside the instruments. Off the wall - Outstanding vocals combined with nice lyrics and a less chaotic background contrasting to the previous. Girlfriend - Michael’s calmer voice stands out immediately, highlighting the shift from energetic to relaxed. The do-do-do-do-do’s are fun. She’s out of my life - A beautiful opening followed by Michaels raw vulnerable voice and emotional lyrics - “She’s out of my life, and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry” Michael sings softly throughout the whole song, conveying his heartbreak and vulnerability. I can’t help it - A laid back song, displaying his admiration and love for someone, describing them as “an angel in disguise”. It’s the falling in love - Genuinely not sure whether the opening is a woman or Michael (sorry Michael) the instrumental and vocal buildup to the chorus was a good addition. Didn’t stand out much. Burn the disco out - I liked his little *hip* noise with his voice, beat creates the illusion that people are clapping along to the song. Fast paced groove with smooth vocals. Was beginning to grow tired of the album but this song brought the energy back, redeeming the album. A fairly good album, some songs become quite repetitive or just don’t stand out much. My top tracks are “Don’t stop ‘till you get enough”, “She’s out of my life”, and “Burn this disco out”. Overall a 3 out of 5, Michael’s vocals are outstanding, the only thing that held the album back for me was the repetitive lyrics and a few of the songs. A lovely first album from Michael.

I'm basing this purely on the music not the man, and the music is kinda brilliant unfortunately

Notable Textzeile: Then why don't you just dance across the floor? 'Cause there's a chance for chances And the chance is choosin' And I sure would like just to groove with you Musste erstmal ein wenig recherchieren um herauszufinden, was MJ hier selbst geschrieben hat.

Hm. Seite A gefällt mir, natürlich wegen den Hits. 2 Punkte? Nein, weil mir burn the disco down dann doch wieder gefällt.

This is a classic album. However, I'm not a big fun of R&B, funky, or disco. So, for that reason, this is not that great for my personal taste. Anyway, the album is indeed enjoyable and, undoubtedly, very well produced.

It was pretty fine but didn't strike me as super amazing or anything; I liked Thriller better generally.

It was good, went up and down for me in terms of songs which i might listen again. Although I don't really think I am a michael jackson guy. Favourites: 1. She's out of my life: very personal and relatable for me 2. Get on the floor: made me want to dance

Michael Jackson is the best above a certain BPM

this album was on the wall in my opinion

Far from the worst thing in the world, but not MJs best album by a long shot.

It's solid pop with some real big hits. But the second half really annoyed me and put me to sleep.

Good start, definitely a vibe could be better overall though.

Geweldige hits, niet zijn beste werk. Tikje eentonig ook

Not the best MJ offering. Probably the most dated of his catalog, leaning very heavily into disco. Has some good songs, but mostly a pass for me in favor of Bad or Thriller

OK, so Michael can blow. He is an amazing singer, and has such an incredible catalogue of music. The Bad and Thriller albums are masterpieces. This, however, I was less than thrilled with. I’m just not a fan of disco, and this album would’ve been so much better if there was a lot more funk to it. Frankly, there’s not a whole lot on here that blows me away. There are some good tracks, no doubt, but far from his best.
