Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Eh… a little too disco infused for my liking.

Don't stop til you get enough is a VERY LONG opening track like good dont get me wrong but like.. please stop I've got enough. I don't want to listen to another half an hour of michael jackson now. Luckily it goes straight into rock with you which is undeniable. Get on the floor and Off the Wall are both absolute bangers i can't lie. She's out of my life unbearable I hate michael jackson's ballads his voice grates the shit out of me on them sorrrrryyyyyyyyy. Last few songs are probably done a disservice by being toward the end. Burn this disco out is good I was just a bit bored of the motown/disco beats by the end. A me problem I'm not a big discohead. Even not knowing much about the MJ chronology you can tell this is like a big transitional album that was probably groundbreaking at the time and influential in a way that makes it feel kinda generic in places now. Shame that she's out of my life fucking sucks

Early and a little disco, but great.

favorite songs were off the wall & i can’t help it. overall, not really my thing but it was not that bad. it had more of a disco-esque feel, so not really ideal for a more calmer day but i think other michael jackson albums would appeal to me more.

Pretty solid Michael Jackson album, has some good ones

Enjoyed it. 7/10

A few stand out songs, but also a whole truck load of instantly forgettable ones. Three stars for the first couple of tracks and historical legacy I guess.

Fin funk. Resten er ikke så meget for mig.

Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough: 3,5/5 - good, but not my vibe Rock with Me: 4,25/5 - great lyrics and instrumentals Workin’ Day and Night: 3,75/5 - I like it especially the moments with bass guitar Get on the Floor: 4/5 - makes me wanna dance Off the Wall: 4/5 - pretty catchy Girlfriend: 3,25/5 - I am not a fan of the story in this song She’s out of my life: 2,5/5 - beautiful lyrics, even tho it doesn’t fit in with the rest I Can’t Help It: 3/5 - too monotonous for me It’s the Falling in Love: 3,5/5 - idyllic vibes, makes me feel alive Burn This Disco Out: 2,75/5 - chorus is dull, but the whole song is not so bad Overall rating: 3,45/5 I liked the album in general, but songs seem to be similar and repetitive. Perfect for dancing, but it’s not my genre, that’s why rating is a bit lower.

So viel besser als Thriller meine Güte

Of course I enjoy this album but when you listen to it all the way through several of the songs really do sound the same

It was okay.

I think this one is wayyy more consistent than Bad by simply being disco and fun disco at that, the singles and really the entire A side is really enjoyable and had fun with it, the B side feels slower and just drags the album down by being more balladey, it's not bad but it's not my favorite thing out of this album. Still, real fun stuff.

This is #day201 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie, and... it's time for my first Michael Jackson album, a breakthrough that catapulted MJ to stardom and laid the groundwork for Thriller, the record that must have introduced me to MJ, with songs like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It." Now, listening to Off The Wall and much of the 70's disco, it's fun to hear how dance music used to be so much more than just a beat, it was live music. The guitar and bass here are super funky, and the groove runs through the entire album, not to mention those exuberant synths... But, something holds me back from rating this one a 4. Maybe it’s the excess of funkiness with the vocals that sometimes sound too soulful? Anyway, this is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day202.

Whatever.

I don't mind the earlier Michael Jackson albums. The later ones lost me, though.

Good start into the 80’s but still sounds of that era… discoey at times. Some good tunes Rock with You in particular. Not my favourite MJ album.

Classic Michael!

Except for hits, was hit and miss,

Disco fever. I was actually surprised a couple of times by being familiar enough with the song to know the lyrics, but had never thought before about who it was by. It was fun, but a whole album of falsetto vocals definitely starts to wear after a while. I much prefer his "real" singing voice.

I'm torn because I liked the album, but I'm unsure if I want to give it a 4 because I think in comparison to the other 4's I have, it doesn't quite hit the same as those ones. It's got the typical Michael Jackson dance bass grooves, it's filled with finger snappers, foot tappers, and party smackers, but by the end of the album, I was done with it and ready to move on to something else.

Some absolute hits, but I found myself skipping some songs and wasn't interested in listening to it again. A solid 3.

Hyggligt, men det skulle bli så mycket bättre.

Not Michael's best work, in my opinion. I personally love and prefer the loose-white-dress-shirt-and-wife-beater version of Michael Jackson over this disco era. I am sure the choreography for this album was great, but it left me wanting overall.

I went into this a little skeptical because of MJ being a pretty weird fuck later on but I must say I found this to be delightful. It’s loaded up with funky disco treats. I’m going to start living my life like I am constantly strutting along to “Get On The Floor”. I mean, what a song. I made a point to go look who was doing that genius-tier bass playing on it. And “Rock With You” is probably the best song MJ ever did. As I finished the 6th song, McCartney’s cheesy “Girlfriend”, I thought I was on track for an unexpected 5-star review. That all came crashing down with “She’s Out Of My Life”, a sad-sack dirge that grinds the party to a halt. The rest of the album is a step up from that but the whole b-side is just not as strong as the beginning run.

Classic

Yeah, there are some pretty cool songs on this album, but does that make it a cool album? No.

Not his best project but still good. I do think it's a bit repetitive to be honest and part of me wants to give this a 2 or 2.5 if that was possible but I will settle with a weak 3 rating.

Drummer does magic with the hi-hat, bassist is incredible, Michael's voice is amazing. With that being said, it's not my cup of tea. Too much disco on side A, and side B sounds like midnight radio.

I love the bass and drums on this album, love the beats. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough is amazing!

Thought the first three tracks were 5stars.

I've never been in interested in Micheal Jackson even though he is one of the most popular and critically lauded artists ever. I've grown up only hearing of him as a pedo so even if that's not true it's always in the back of my mind when I listen to him. If I want to listen to similar music, there's a bunch of other artists that I can listen to instead, I have zero emotional investment in MJ. 5/10 cause I'm mainly indifferent on the music itself. Favorite track(s): Don't stop till you get enough (I'll admit this is a banger) Will I revisit?: low priority Rating: 5/10

Fav track: i can't help it

Not my fave MJ but I like it alright

Okay I Get It Now

Didn't really dig this one too much. Two classics on here stops it from being a worse rating.

Disco Mike. Not Bad.

Daar begon hij blijkbaar pas mee in de jaren 80... 7/10 Highlights Dont Stop Til You Get Enough

I'm so sick of this list acting like if an artist is good, every album of theirs needs to be on this list.

If any album would make someone enjoy the disco era, it's this one. Great first few songs. As a producer, Quincy Jones was a genius.

First two songs are solid, but the rest of the album is pretty mundane. Wanted to give an extra star for spring-boarding his trajectory, but this falls well short of “Thriller”.

solid album

I find this album cover terrifying and I’m not even a child.

I enjoyed this while listening to it, then kinda forgot about it immediately after. I imagine this would have hit very hard in '79. But knowing, as we do, the stronger music that was yet to come... this does feel a little forgettable. 3 stars from me.

This is the first massive solo album from Michael Jackson. I didn't particularly care for it too much - a bit too pop for me, but there's no denying it was hugely influential. However, I far prefer Thriller to this album.

Surprisingly had not listened to this in full. Bangers from one of entertainment's biggest monsters.

A few 5 star songs. The rest of the album is ok. But the hits are huge. 3.75.

Found it boring.

Two cracking tracks to begin with, rest was pretty decent. 3.5 stars.

I get it, MJ just isn't for me.

Feels a bit dated now

pretty monotone... it did nothing for me

Eh, it’s pretty good but not exactly my jam

A few great ones. Too many slow ones.

It is difficult to separate Michael Jackson's music from Michael Jackson the person. Clearly he was a massively talented artist, but not such a great person. Off the Wall is interesting because it seems to be the point right before he began to lose touch with reality. Also before the Pepsi commercial accident when he went completely off the rails never to recover. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock with You are really great songs. She's Out of My Life was also very popular. The rest of the album is good. Off the Wall stands out among the rest. Hard to judge this album fairly when his next album happens to be the best selling album of all time, but this one is good.

Good dance album at the start then gets more soulful and sad, gets a bit repetitive but vert good album

Bass is amazing. Works when there's a swift tempo. When he slows down it's a bit cringe. Girlfriend is unlistenable, She's Out of My Life is... well, melodramatic. Overall, MJ is a tragic figure; a product of a difficult upbringing and an ultimately distorted reality that led to harmful choices and impulses.

Less hits than I thought, but still great.

very good pop album. insane the quantum leap he takes on Thriller

Close to 40 years since I've listened to this album and it feels every year of it!

This makes sense to be on the list and is a great example of a pop album. Good energy, fun, strong talent. It's not the deepest content but it's a great listen.

Feels crazy going from yesterday's album James Brown right into this. Really makes the inspiration clear. Michael as I've said before brings the energy and charisma, but I find the music mediocre. The first two tracks are fun to dance to.

Saw I got Michael Jackson, got excited. Opened up the album to see 2 of his good songs followed by a lot of not great songs. It's aight.

Zwischen 3 und 4. MJ immer wieder fire, aber kein absoluter Banger in diesem Album.

Début en fanfare avec “Don’t stop ‘til you get enough” où Michael Jackson montre ce qu’il est désormais capable de faire en solo avec Quincy Jones à la production. Ca enchaine avec “Rock with you”, sympathique également. Le reste est un peu trop disco pour moi, avec une production trop envahissante, trop clinquante et donc maintenant datée. “Off the wall” est sympathique. Par contre “Girlfriend”, reprise des Wings de McCartney est trop cheesy, comme “She’s out of my life”… En fait l’album baisse en intérêt au fur et à mesure qu’il avance, c’est pas top pour laisser une bonne impression, malgré quelques sursauts comme le refrain de “It’s the falling in love”.

This was a jam, quite enjoyed listening to it. Good getting shit done music for work. To be honest though, it didn't grab be to the point where it will ever occur to me to put it on in the future.

Love me some MJ, but this isn't my favorite of his albums. Most glorified disco before he goes full MJ. The first two songs are phenomenal and warrant 3 stars on their own. The rest of the album doesn't do it for me.

Not my favorite Michael Jackson album. This is glorified elevator music for the most part.

bruh dont stop til you get enough- 5 rock with you- yakuza disco music. 6 working day and night- 5 get on the floor- 5. the bass is good off the wall- NOT HEE HEE. hes haunting me. girlfriend- 4 shes out of my life- 4 cant help it- 4 its the falling in love- 5 burn this disco out- 5 it was ok ig

Michael Jackson's Off The Wall. Yeah, whoa! I'll say he is. He's crazy. Off the planet. Isn't he gonna freeze himself…? 3.5

Favourite track: Rock with You.

3 out of 5. Second Micheal Jackson album so far. A step down from Thriller but still has some good songs like Rock With You.

Not a fan of the slower songs like She's Out of My Life, but an overall enjoyable album.

Not my favourite among MJ’s work.

This is the only Michael Jackson album I ever owned. It was huge back in the day but it's definitely a product of it's time and nothing that I'm interested in any longer. The most impactful song -She's Out Of My Life.

I rock with the maestro Quincy and the many musicians he employs on this album, but I do not rock with the man on its cover.

I hate Michael Jackson, think he is despicably overrated by critics. However, there's no getting away from the fact that this record is great, with hits galore, a crack squad of songwriters and a stellar production job from Quincy Jones. The latter's contribution here set forward a new template (for better or worse) for pop music, and it has aged surprisingly well. In fact, the singles here might be the tracks that have stayed in circulation, but the deep cuts have stood the test of time much better. McCartney's "Girlfriend" shines in particular. I don't love 'Off the Wall' - the second side slump is a bit too jarring unfortunately - but I will say I liked it a lot more than I expected to.

The first half is really fun. The second is dull. Michael Jackson cannot convey emotion in his voice and shouldn’t try to sing ballads. I will revisit a few songs from this album- off the wall and get on the floor specifically.

Funky, géométrie variable sur la tracklist

MJ is always such a full package. Every song feels so tightly produced. Also the basslines are killer. Perfect example of A-sides and B-sides. First half of the album is considerably better than the back half. Although, "It's the Falling in Love" would make for a killer sample in a modern track. Fav Track: Off the Wall

It's just okay. Rick James had better stuff. So did Prince. And the Isley Brothers. Maybe it was a game changer at the time but it's got like three tracks I'd come back to and the rest is fine.

She’s Out Of My Life is the pick here.

"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" start the first real Michael Jackson debut on an all-time high. Yet minus a couple of small ephemeral peaks afterwards, il all goes downhill from there. The small peaks are the title track and the cut "I Can't Help It", which was co-written by Stevie Wonder (I knew something interesting was happening melody-wise on this one before I even checked the credits). And the moody, vibraphone-laden (?) instrumentation on this latter song sure adds to its evocative surroundings. Apart from that, well, it's just mind-boggling that some critics estimate this is one of the very best albums of all time. Apart from the opener and its follow-up song, what is there in the full-blown disco cuts that those professional critics thought was so revolutionary? All I can hear is generic proceedings in the schmaltzy genre, even if I try real hard to put my head back to 1979 (see "Workin' Day And Night", "Burn This Disco Out" or "Get On The Floor" - I admit that the short instrumental bridge on the latter is quite cool, but there's absolutely nothing memorable to the song per se). Some production ideas are interesting, and Jackson and his mentor Quincy Jones were well on their way to *Thriller*'s level of pop sophistication. But apart on the two famous singles, they had not reached that point yet. *Off The Wall* still lacks the luster and bite of its successor. At least as found in the latter's lively, groovy, legendary cuts. Besides, there are a few clunkers in this debut, and they grate even more than the ones in *Thriller*. The cream on the shitcake is obviously "Girlfriend", as cheesy and awful as the Paul McCartney and Wings original. But one should also mention the bland, inert and saccharine "She's Out Of My Life"... And even if I don't go there, the mere fact that this record is so blatantly overrated in today's retrospective lists gets on my nerves a little. What "legacy", for chrissake? Pointing out that The Weekend and later Tame Impala albums found their inspiration in *Off The Wall* in particular is actually doing a disservice to the latter. Those albums are way more annoying than most of what can be found in this debut, very ironically. But they're *so annoying* that I might be tempted to blame Michael Jackson for the fact that they even exist. 🙃 To put it in a nutshell... I gave a 2/5 or 3/5 grade to the last Chic album spurt forth by this app. So tell me... Why should I give a far higher grade to *Off The Wall*, honestly? 2/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 7/10 for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 48 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 409 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 239 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 305

some hits to start but a bit too slow to be great

192/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Who am I to rate the king of pop.

Michael is at his best when he's energetic, and has an outstanding, loud horn section backing him up. To that effect, the first half of this record is excellent but it drags as soon as he starts slowing it down.

It's Michael Jackson! What we have here is someone who is extremely good at doing their job. Even I have to admit that. The unfortunate thing is, that it's just not what I would choose to listen to. But for quality it's got to be a 3.

Side one of the LP an unquestionable 5 stars. If that doesn’t get you moving and grooving then you’re not wired up right. Disco/funk perfection. Side two of the LP far too mushy.

One has to take his future antics, as well as the musical abomination he became and judge this on its merits, not easy. but it's pretty good for a pop record and some famous hits, which I don't mind too much. He deserved his fame if it was based solely on this effort

Loved the first half of this album - it was fun and got me dancing while cooking. The second half, not so much. Solid 3.5 stars.

p443. 1979. 3 stars. Before he went weird and starting re-organising his face, Michael Jackson was a bona fide contender for the future of disco and R&B. Some great tunes, great vocals, wonderful production. Points deducted for excessive filler on the second side. Probably just edges Thriller as his best work. Still a bit uneasy about giving 3 stars to a kiddy fiddler.

I really don't get the hype. It's alright, I guess

Not my favourite MJ album but still good.

Really good start to the album! The first half’s got me grooving. However, I tire a little through the second part

Mixed feelings about this album. First half's funky groove is excellent but the second half is flat out boring soul. Decent, but meh. Michael Jackson is just one of those artists I can't connect with.

The first of many Jackson hits.

Don't like this

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.

Knew more songs on here than I expected to! Enjoyed it, but definitely held my attention less and less as the album went on. Very strong first act. Good, but less exciting second act. More mellow third act. Feels very of it's time which I am not sure is a product of it's influence or it's influences. Just read that it's Jacksons first big solo album (fifth overall) and it makes total sense that the hits in this collection lead to his commerical success. Favorite track is Rock with You

This is a very good album but Michael clearly hadn't found his groove yet. The rock and roll edge to Michael's voice is completely missing on Off The Wall. Too much ooooooh, zero shamone.

She's out of my life might be the cheesiest thing ever. Wait, MJ did do The Girl is Mine with Macca. The whole second half of this album is pretty mid (especially by MJ standards). His voice and production are there, but it just feels a little...underwhelming?

Hard to get too excited about a pedophile.

That mumbling at the beginning of the first song has always bothered me, even though I've always liked the song. Turns out there's even weirder sounds at the beginning of the title track.

Too bad he was such a terrible dude

DOnt stop and rock with you are brilliant. If dont stop doesnt make you move your arse then i dont know what will. Maybe a hernia. Get on the floor and burn this disco out has a great funk to it. Other than that the rest were just OK. overall a solid album but only two stand out tracks. 3.5/5 for me.

Good album.

One of those albums that I've never heard before, except that I have. I knew a lot of those songs even if I didn't know they were on this album. It's hardly surprising given the massive fame that Michael Jackson had. I'm putting aside the troubling allegations that dogged him later in life to just look at the album itself. Undoubtedly, it's a classic that helped set the template for decades of pop stars to come. It's not as good as 'Thriller' but this is probably the point where he became the pop star that would be world famous. Not just the kid from the Jackson 5 but a force himself, harnessing disco, pop and R&B into his own creation (very much aided by Quincy Jones). It definitely deserves attention as a significant part of music history, even if it's not a personal favorite.

Great voice, but not interesting music to me

It's a definite classic. It is funky and has some of Michael's best songs. I prefer "Thriller", to this album, but it was still a fun listen.

Honestly, the only songs I can really jam are Don’t Stop, Off The Wall, and to a lesser extent, Rock With You . The rest sound dated. It’s an ok album. I give this a 3 only on the strength of Don’t Stop - can’t sit still for that song.

Beyond the first two songs, which are amazing, just filler.

Solid album. Apart from "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Off the Wall", no song really stands out, however.

A bunch of absolute classic bangers but as an album, eh. Some songs went on way too long.

I wanna give it a 3.5 but that’s not an option sooo rounding down

Definitely the first time I've ever listened to an entire Michael Jackson album in one sitting... A couple of his early hits, but found the rest of the album underwhelming. Thriller it is not...

It's comfortable listening, but I definitely like his later albums more.

Some tunes but dated and dubious criminal history

Decent listen. I appreciate the Stevie influence on many of the songs, and the whole thing comes off very smooth. 6/10

A couple hits, and some wonderfully produced tracks.

pretty enjoyable listen. some songs are more enjoyable than others. I don't have too many strong feelings but it was a good morning album.

I liked two but found the others a bit dated. I enjoyed the album and the flash back.

Great early album and the song off the wall was great. A little inconsistent even though his voice was quite amazing theoughout

Some good songs, overall average though.

Fun, the usual

Jaja, no. A Los Prisioneros.

Some good music here, but too disco-ey for me.

Quincy Jones is the real star here. It's impossible to listen to Off the Wall without shaking a leg. Unlike Thriller and BAD, the album drifts a little away from the singles. Still sounds fresh, mind.

Disco era MJ isn't that interesting tbh

The first half was very good, the second half was much less so. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could, but I think I’ll harshly give it a 3 star because I very much disliked the second half of the album.

Fine. Not many big MJ hits

Crazy the life and times of Michael Jackson.

Good listen but I thought I’d recognise more, definately a good primer for what he did later.

Some good funky tunes. A few misses. I enjoyed the McCartney-penned Girlfriend quite a bit. Very Paul

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough is a decent opening track, but it goes on a little too long; I got enough after 3 minutes. The album quickly goes down hill from here unfortunately. Nothing was terrible, but nothing was good either. King of Pop? More like King of Flops!

Not my kinda music but it was fine. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nothin wrong with a bit of old school Jacko

Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough 3.8 Rock With You 3.6 Workin' Day and Night 3.3 Get on the Floor 3.4 Off the Wall 3.6 Girlfriend 3 She's Out of My Life 3.2 I Can't Help It 2.9 It's the Falling in Love 3 Burn This Disco Out 3 Score: 3.28

Some classics. 3/5

1. Rock with you 2. Dont stop till you get enough 3. off the wall 4.. the rest

Some funky stuff, second half of the album isn’t great, 6/10

3 stars solely off the power of can't stop till you get enough

MICHAEL JACKSON・DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH 5/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・ROCK WITH YOU (SINGLE VERSION) 6/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・WORKIN' DAY AND NIGHT 7/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・GET ON THE FLOOR 6/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・OFF THE WALL 6/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・GIRLFRIEND 6/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・SHE'S OUT OF MY LIFE (SINGLE VERSION) 6/10 (Very 80s) MICHAEL JACKSON・I CAN'T HELP IT 3/10 (Magpakailanman ass music) MICHAEL JACKSON・IT'S THE FALLING IN LOVE 4/10 MICHAEL JACKSON・BURN THIS DISCO OUT 4/10 (Too disco for me) Michael Jackson good but this album ain't for me. Good background music I guess. For an older urban setting I suppose.

It's interesting hearing this album and comparing it to modern day dance/club pop albums. There are many parts in this record where I could hear Daft Punk. Off The Wall must have been huge during the disco era. Great song writing, great performances. Michael Jackson always delivers on vocals. There is a part in one of the song where his voice goes out of tune... And it proves the MJ was in fact human after all. Great record. Not my favourite MJ recor but enjoyable.

Enjoyable

First track is a certified banger. It all sort of fades into noise for me past that. Pleasant enough, but uninspiring.

Started off well, but I got bored towards the end. Songs were dancy - I liked the vibe. It just seemed to slow down towards the later songs 3 ⭐️

Some good songs, such as "Rock With You" But otherwise very very meh

For me personally, Michael is at his best when the songs are more up beat and he can show off his range and inflection. This album has some of that and is where it is at its best. A lot of this album is a little slower and less to his style. A solid debut solo album but I think his best work comes after this album.

it's quite okay+cool for a m.j. album

Pretty solid 4 until the last couple songs. Dropped it to a 3 in my book.

sabu's ability to play deeply complex rhythms at the speed he plays them at while also managing to make it sound structured and coherent impressed me. unfortunately this album was a total chore. at a club or party, in the right live environment, im sure this has unbelievable energy. the recording is stiff however and as cool as the rhythm play is, i dont think i can ever love music as un-melodic as this. i would never go as far as to call this not music (and it's probably straight up racist to do so), it is far too expressive (a core goal of art being expression) and technical to be insulted in that way. things shine on tracks 3, 6, and 8, which all feature prominent and fascinating guitar melodies played by arsenio rodriguez. i would be much more interested in an album that blended the guitar playing of those tracks with the rhythm section on the rest of the album. honestly just for introducing me to rodriguez's guitar skills, this was worth the listen

A great album with lots of great singles. Not my favorite from Michael, but still a great record with lots of re-listen-ability! 3/5

Pleasant but a little boring sorry Micheal and fans. Favourites: girlfriend, it's the falling in love, burn this disco down. 3/5

3.5 stars perfect Roller Rink Disco music.

So conflicted

Have listened to this album on and off the last 30 years. Historically have like it better than Thriller. Side 1 would always get a ton of play but not so much with Side 2.

It still blows my mind that \"Don't Stop Till You Get Enough\" is a Michael Jackson song. It's so present in our culture and it sounds so different from most of his catalog. This album is pretty good! He seemed like a very, very bad person, though. So can't go too crazy with the star rating.

Amazing and energetic funk soul. Some of the slow tunes fall flat, they should have kept it coming with the dance tunes. Tidal wave me. Playlist pick: working day and night.

A good album. The first half was very strong, the second was meh. 3/5.

3.5 funky bass lines killer vocals but most the songs were just good. Expected more from Michael

Still don't get, why he was seen as the king, but then again pop just might not be for me.

I like Michael Jackson's 80s material but for whatever reason I just didn't vibe with this album after the initial 3 tracks. The great production the whole way through is the only reason this gets as much as 3/5 from me, but I won't be returning to this album.

The first two songs are obviously bangers. Classics. The rest of the album is good but less memorable.

Second half drops the ball so hard its not even funny

BL: After being incredibly dissapointed by Thriller as an album when I listened to it, I am weary if I will like this one, but I will come into it without bias and try listen to it as objectively as possible. AL: Definitely better than Thriller, the production isn't as obnoxious. This style of overproduced disco is certainly never going to be my thing, but there are moments where it works incredibly well ("Rock With You") and also more tender and quiet moments ("She's Out of My Life"), which is equally as good in it's own way, highlighting that under the Quincy Jones production, there may just be a real human being. I definitely think if Jackson made more of the ballads I'd be a much bigger fan. FT: "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Rock With You", "She's Out of My Life" 3/5

This has a few classics, but overall feels like an artist on the way to great records that isn't there yet. Which is basically where Michael was at the time. The production is top notch. For me it's solid but not great.

Not letting the argument of '' it's MJ so of course it's 5 stars '' cloud my judgement : it's repetitive at times and definitely not as good as Thriller. Rock With You is the only one that really stands out to me.

King of Pop has a few absolute bangers on this one, but also a few tracks that aren't really too great. Ends up being pretty in the middle of the road overall.

I had a pretty similar response to Bad. The hits, like Rock With You, are amazing. But the rest of the songs just didn't catch me. They felt like filler. Maybe it's just because I haven't heard those songs all my life, so I have no attachment to them.

It was fine. I enjoyed the vibe of this album a little more than "Bad" on the whole. This album had a way stronger disco influence to it, which made it feel more dated than most of Jackson's biggest hits from other albums.

OK. Some classics on there but the guy makes my skin crawl.

Most of these things, I've heard, even if I didn't know they were his. Honestly, most interesting part was seeing this with music videos on YouTube; seeing when Jackson still had that youthful charisma.

Don’t Stop and Rock With You still great songs - side A is significantly better than the sleepy side B. Was MJ wearin’ Vans in 1979? (2.6*s)

Side A, all day. Side B, lost me (to dozin off). Last song perked me up and I wanted more. Still, for a solo album straying from his motown roots and wanting to make something different (yes I read the wiki)...MJ nails it. Quincy era begins and we got some strong ones to come from the collab.

Off The Wall is a disco classic that still holds up today. I love the early impact MJ had when he broke out and went solo. The main issue is that the album unfortunately has diminishing returns as you get through it. Side A is damn near flawless with a couple of timeless classics, but the back half of the album fizzles as you get through it. Regardless it is still a very strong pseudo-debut that is absolutely worth a listen. Always been a huge fan of MJ's music. While Off The Wall is a classic and belongs on this list it doesn't compete with his next 4 albums for me. 2.9 stars

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.

Onhan tämä ihan tällästä poppista soulia. Aika imelää kyllä. Ihan ok. 3/5

A strong start with the first couple songs. Then it's mostly alright.

tons of funk

Alright

La musique du loto c'est micheal ????? Pas la best BO pour lire Tolstoï mais ça donne envie de groover

Yes. This does have some great pop songs on it.

This was a decent album; pretty front loaded IMO. By the last half or so I was getting tired of it. I might just have a lower tolerance for disco. Rock With You was my favorite song. Nothing crazy to say here

First five tracks were very enjoyable, but I didn't feel like the latter 5 held up as much and felt like a tonal shift. Overall, a really good album.

HOO BOY WHAT A COMPLICATED ONE. Going objective and stripping away nostalgia and also monstrousness, some good songs some bad had to listen in a private session for shame and guilt reasons okay bye.

There’s 10 songs on this album and 5 are about dancing, 4 about girls and one about work. Still, good album. Before the… unpleasantness…

Listened only once, I like the newer things better..

Not as great as I thought it was. Still good though. Somehow only ever listened to the albums that followed.

2.5/5 - Starts off hot! Then fades away(:....A little too much of the disco production sound for my tastes...

Very dated

As your typical vinyl album, you have A-side bangers and then the B-side.

Está bueno pero no soy muy fan de esa clase de música. Tendría que escucharlo una vez más para ver si hay alguna canción que me agrade genuinamente

Just ok

Classic album by one of the biggest artists of all time. Definitely got a lot of funk to it!

Couple of his best tracks. Overall a little too disco sounding for me.

Transitional Michael. Just past Jackson 5 days but before he busted out Bad

Disco MJ

3.5 out of 5 love Michael love this album but I know he has better ones. Off the wall or I can’t help it may be my fave.

Ok album.

Problematic artist. However full on bangers and some easy listening too.

Gesäusel von Michael, auch wenn mit guten Beats, Disco-Riff und Slap-Bass. War nie meins.

Solid album. Was pretty middle of the road for me, a few good songs and a few meh type tracks. Was a decent variety of MJ's musical genres mixed in also. Quite funky at times.

Fun to go back and hear vintage disco Michael, and realize how revolutionary this moment was for him. "Don't Stop Til..." holds up after all these years.

Was going to call it cliché but can you really call something that invented the cliché that. Im sure I woupd have loved MJ back in the day but this genre was so overused by everyone after him that I cant enjoy it.

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.

I hadn't heard some of these and the songs I knew, I didn't know they were M.J. Good stuff.

Better than I thought it would be.

It was ok. The first maybe four songs were really good. Definitely falls off towards the end.

Off The Wall is a pretty good album even if it doesn't have what i think are Michael Jackson's best songs. It still was fun listen with some great melodies and a fun, groovy feel. Sometimes, the songs do give off an elevator album vibe (which isn't a bad thing, just so you know) but i wouldn't really consider this album to be one. I don't think it will be my favorite Michael Jackson album i do but its still a pretty good album. Best Song: Burn This Disco Out Worst Song: Girlfriend

Makes me want to bend over and show my browneye.

A few notables, but mostly just okay plus a few that fell flat for me.

I've got no taste, so this is probably good music. Not for me though.

This one falls off a cliff and then ends ok

He's not the king of pop yet. Still working on that disco vibe. Overall it's an okay listen. Probably won't come back to it

Fannst þetta byrja vel fyrstu tvö lögin. Svo fjaraði heldur betur úr þessu að mínu mati. Allt of mikið diskó eitthvað.

i just liked Don't Stop Til You Get Enough and Rock With You

Klassieker natuurlijk

3* very good first half with lots of bangers but boring second half

Michael’s voice really is beautiful. So much range, both in notes and musical style. I didn’t listen to the entire album, but I feel like I heard enough to give it 3 stars.

It’s an album by the King of Pop. It’s also a disco album that sure as hell isn’t Thriller. It has its strong moments, especially the first two songs, but there’s a reason disco music isn’t popular anymore. The rhythms are great but the repeated lyrics get old pretty quickly. Definitely something that would be fun to dance to but having to listen to the album in certain environments takes away from it. I think it’s a three because it really marks the beginning of MJ becoming MJ but that could be more to do with Quincy Jones than Michael. Ask me next week and who knows, I might say it’s a two.

Never listened to an MJ album front to back, just know the hits. First two tracks are obviously massive hits. I didn't realize Don't Stop was over 6 mins long, radio edit much needed. The rest of the album was pretty avg for me, probably needs a few more listens before deciding if I should save any of the tracks to Spotify.

Groovy

40+ minutes of unrelenting, falsetto disco is not my idea of a good time. I know a lot of people absolutely adore Mikey but I am not one of them. This was, for me, a brutal listening experience. That said, I can't argue with the production quality (immaculate) or the musicianship (top-notch). And, yeah, these songs (most of them at least) were and still ARE world-wide phenomenons. I can't argue that it doesn't belong on the list. It absolutely belongs here. But dammit. I hated every minute of the non-stop disco assault.

Niceeeeee. Did zone out a bit in the back half.

Good MJ album

Singles are great, albums tracks are fairly generic disco.

3.5/5 - Not quite at his best yet but a solid album. Keeping art separate from the artist.

The latter half of this record really lets it down and the first half isn't perfect either. A few good tracks throughout the album though and for what was technically a debut effort this isn't bad, pretty funky. Low to mid 3.

This album started off really fun and then just felt like it went on forever.

An enjoyable funky disco-lite MJ album.

I see the value in this more than most things I listen to

I find this really hard to rate. On the one hand, the first three tracks are some of Jackson's best work and the album absolutely rips out of the gate with them. The rest of the album mellows out a bit too much and becomes a bit take it or leave it. On the other, it's fairly well established that Jackson was likely a pedophile. I've always been iffy on the particulars of this because Jackson himself was also deeply psychologically complicated, but I've met people who have been close to the matter in the music scene and have ascertained that he was indeed guilty. Because of the nostalgia factor with Jackson, it's a bit easier to separate the man from the music, but I still find it difficult to listen to him. Objectively, a 4/5 album. But with his history I have to drop this to 3.

The album - the first to be produced by Quincy Jones - that, for me, marked a change in direction for Michael Jackson, and a sign of greater things to come, typified by the opening track "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", and the title track "Off the Wall".

By modern tastes the production is a bit thin, I wish the bass and drums were higher in the mix. That said, it's a pretty great mix of tunes, and a famous record. The first two tracks are all timers.

Most songs are mid - P Heard a few of the songs before, don’t hate but don’t love. Makes good background music when focusing on something else - B

A more lounge-y album by MJ, full of excellent songs but no bangers.

I only knew the first two tracks prior to listening to this, and they’re the best ones. It’s good pop, though drops off towards the end. Not his best.

Very fun album with some real gems. It's not quite as timeless as what MJ was about to release and it definitely feels like he hadn't quite found his iconic sound yet.

Loads of belterd then it sounds today like a mid range soul / disco album. Brings it back at the end with some beauts.

This was nice and I respect the influence but I don't think I'd ever go out of my way to listen to the entire album.

Some of the songs got me moving, but overall the songs sounded pretty much the same.

A strong first half, followed by a hollow second.

MJ is always fun.

Let's face it. Disco sucks. Hello Abba and BeeGees... This album is only saved by a healthy amount of funk influence. If you can ignore the screams and pleas of kids being raped in this monster's bedroom, I guess this album is ok. Would have rather listened to Thriller or Bad. Glad none of the fractions of pennies that Spotify is paying the owner of the music is actually going to this horrible human.

Very good MJ album and the first of a string of three consecutive albums that would make him the king of pop. 3

Sublime first side, doesn't quite hit the heights on side two.

Not my favorite Michael Jackson album but there are some classic songs that never get old on the album.

Don't Stop Till you Get Enough to Off the Walls is a great five song run. They all feel like they could be radio jams. I was not a fan of the ballads they were well sung and produced but they didn't tug at me. I didn't feel like he cared. I enjoyed the closing track Production was nice the dance songs were good but the ballads didn't make me feel anything of note even though his voice was incredible

Michael's first collaboration with Quincy Jones, which helped prompt his next collaboration with Jones, the megahit album Thriller. The four singles (Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, She's Out of My Life, and Off the Wall) are hands down the best songs on the album. Get on the Floor and Burn this Disco Out (my favorite) get an honorable mention for having good grooves. Unfortunately the other songs despite being written by Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and Carol Bayer Sager (It's the Falling In Love is just blech) are not strong tracks at all.

Slick pop

Strong start and mediocre at about the halfway point of this album. Not a bad album by any means, just not something I am going to put on again other than "Don't stop" or "Rock with you.

Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.

More funk than I remember. Cool.

Disco pop - Don’t stop til you get enough is the stand out

meh, not so good

I kinda liked it. Will have to revisit though, since i'm trying to get back on track with this thingie and i didnt' give the ol'Michael as much love as he deserves

Listened Before? No Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough is a damned jam. Was introduced to this by my roommate Freshman year, and while I thought it was hilarious at first, the groove is undeniable. Four songs in, there is a lot of funk influence mixed with dancefloor disco vibes. Love the poppy bassline that propels Get on the Floor. Off the Wall is a jam as well, lead by a silky synthetic bassline; love the brass and vocal layering here. While I respect the King of Pop, and found plenty to enjoy here in the first half, the second half kind of dragged. I respect the album for what it is and think that in more objective sense, this album should score highly. Personally, however, this is a middling 3 at best. Added to Library? Songs Added to Playlists: - Don't Stop... (Sunny-vibes)

Started off strong, fell into a lull in the middle. Burn This Disco Out was a good, fun finish. This one probably warrants a re-listen, but for now it gets a 3.

Michael Jackson: Bad Guy. But I would be lying if I didn't say that this album has some absolutely funky bangers on it.

3/5 Too many intermediate tracks for me.

Opening track is phenomenal. The rest is ok 3/5

Slow jams are NOT my jam…

Pretty solid but not his best. I mean Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough is fantastic but the rest of the record doesn’t keep up and second half of the album kind of blends together.

Although personally not a fan of Michael Jackson, I can appreciate this album packed with hits. Classic for MJ, personally something I wouldn’t spend time listening to, but can say a 3/5 for me.

4th MJ album on the list - no need for an entire discography.

Very samey, can't tell the songs apart.

Amazing production, but I found the songs themselves a little underwhelming given how rated this album is. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough Date listened: 15/11/23

Culturally relevant but still just disco

Whenever you hear Michael Jasckson songs, it's always the smash hits - which he has plenty of, can't argue about that. This album contains two that I can spot, but the rest are more modest. And I have to say that there is quite a big difference between those hits and his other songs. They were by no means bad, but didn't stand out that much else, except of course by the fact that MJ is a stellar performer and singer. Strong 3 it is.

I've come to realize I'm just not a huge Michael Jackson fan. "Don't stop 'Til You Get Enough" is a good song and so is "Rock With You". The rest was ok but didn't really grab me in any meaningful way. It's no thriller!

Aus Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough kommt also diese Melodie... Warum heißt das Album eigentlich wie das Motto von Vans? Also irgendwas mit Popkultur oder so. 3/5

Dig the first half a lot more than the back half! I had heard 3 of the first 5 tracks but none of the others. The back half started to blend together for me, but I'll definitely keep coming back to the few songs I'd heard before.

Good vibes on this album (mostly). Disco/dancing feel.

Liked the couple known songs, rest I’d kinda meh

#27. I wouldn't generally say that I'm a big fan of pop music or disco, but there aren't any bad songs on this album. I think its a solid 7/10 album, but at the end of the day I decided to round down instead of round up because there weren't any adults here to stop me. 3/5: acceptable.

maikel yackson HII HII... king of POPPI PASKA... heh ja syystäkin, mutta ei tarpeeeksi HIIIHIIIIIIItä albumilla. toisella puoliskolla albumi hidastuu, virheellinen laskelma mielestäni.. energisempi disco, toinen genre sekä kolmas genre albumin alussa teki tästä miellekästä. jyrkkä alamäki hohhoijjaa mutta pysyy silti korkealla.... himalajasssa jos puolet tulee alas silti ollaan yli kolmen kilometrin korkeudella, vähän korkeammalla kun kebne... totuudet eivät välitä tunteistasi.. workin day and night

Na Jacksona slabé

Liked a couple songs

Disco era MJ. Don’t Stop and On the Wall we’re good. Although everything about MJ in this era was pretty basic.

i liked it more than I thought i would. the funk guitar and bass was nice

Solid disco

Probably good for the time

One v good song, the rest was MJ vibes

Some songs are great, some not so much. Example: I Can't Help It has a great bass line, but the other parts seem kind of random. Favorite song: off the wall.

Wat me wel nog kon smaken: het stuwende Workin' Day and Night en afsluiter Burn The Disco Out. Daarop blijf ik niet stilzitten. Over het algemeen ben ik minder bekend met het Post-Motown tijdperk van Michael Jackson, al komen al zijn monsterhits uit deze plaat, Bad en natuurlijk Thriller. De Motownsound is me toch dierbaarder.

More of a fan of the hits, this has probably my favorite early MJ song (Rock with you). I'm not really into anything else though on this album, even Don't stop till you get enough.
