Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Э, звучит гораздо больше как Арктик Манкиз, чем хотелось бы от сайд-проекта, завязанного на большой любви к Скотту Уокеру и Дэвиду Боуи. Лучшая песня - Standing Next to Me.

Good for them

Well, I gave this album a listen and, honestly, none of the songs really stood out for me. Overall it had a very dramatic, 60s, symphonic feel to it, but, I did not hear anything especially special.

This wasn’t bad. It didn’t do all that much for me but it was decent. None of the songs were all that memorable. I guess it just doesn’t stand out as something worth going out of my way for. If you’re looking for a 60s garage rock inspired side project I’d recommend The Foxboro Hot Tubs over this. They also aren’t breaking new ground, but at least they bring some energy and fun to it.

Utterly forgettable

There are some retro type bands I dig, but for some reason this one just does not click with me. Not sure why, cuz I like a lot of Bowie-esque "retro" bands. Oh well. Many more albums to go.

Just sounds like everything else that comes out of these bands.

An immaculatly produced self-indulgent bore.

This was a bit disappointing. I don't know, what these musicians tried to accomplish in genre or style, but in my view, they failed. There was some '60s psychedelic rock/pop, some more baroque style stuff, and then the sound of the italo western movie scores. Too much echo/hall effect, too much of nearly anything. This was an overaccomplishment in a very bad way.

I genuinely can’t believe this album has made it into this group of albums. It’s OK britpop at best! Some nice songs but a lot of filler Favourite song: Standing next to me is a tune! Least favourite: the chamber Album artwork: nice

"The Age of the Understatement" feels like a modern mish mash of spaghetti western, 60s mod, and maybe a tangential sprinkle of surf rock. While I admire the creative ambition of this project, I confess that I am a bigger fan of the source material than this album. It does not quite manage to reach the epic John Barry-esque of the best Bond music, rather it feels like the kind of sonic sandwich spread that would be slathered all over LUTHER episodes. I am unmoved and unimpressed by the lyrics and the singers' performance of them. Feels like the music would be far more moving without the lyrics and singing altogether. As if the most interesting parts were composed by Owen Pallet and performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. I think where the lyricist failed is that they tried to cram too many lines of lyrics into the songs, which is unsuitable for the genres they are referencing. If they were really clever they would have kept only the absolute necessary best bits and gave the songs space so that they could really reach climax, of which many of these songs never quite feel like they do. They also could have benefited from having singers that actually have expansive voices like Tom Jones or Shirley Bassey, or rather whoever they would be these days, to truly call back to to what made those genres special. I cannot compare it to the work of The Arctic Monkeys, as I am not familiar with their sound. Until today, I had never heard of them. I appreciate that the album was brought to my attention, but I ultimately don't think it belongs on this list. Two stars for the work of the arranger, and conductor.

This was just not Alex Turner’s best … theyre clearly being experimental but it just lacks execution. I struggled through this album and really did not enjoy it. Standing next to me was the only redeemable track imo

The Age of the Understatement presents itself as a well-accomplished piece, showcasing meticulous attention to detail. From start to finish, it maintains a consistent aesthetic reminiscent of a cohesive film score from the 1960s, transporting listeners to a bygone era. While its craftsmanship is undeniable, the album failed to fully grasp my attention, lacking the ability to captivate and engage me throughout its duration. Its ambitious nature is apparent, aiming for grandeur and complexity, yet ultimately falling short in resonating with me. Despite its merits, it seems tailored for a specific audience, perhaps those with a nostalgic fondness for the era it emulates. Overall, The Age of the Understatement may be praised for its technical proficiency and thematic consistency, but it ultimately left me wanting more in terms of emotional connection and musical impact. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None

Originell! Eigener Stil! Aber jeder Titel klingt wie der davor! Irgendwann nur noch langweilig! 2/5

Miles Kane being carried out of lumpen mediocrity by his talented mate through a Scott Walker pastiche. In it's defense, there are worse artists to plagiarise. But Alex Turner probably needed better around him to pull it off successfully.

An ok album

I can appreciate that they tried to do something interesting here but it misses the mark in my opinion. It doesn’t have that vintage 60s production, it just sounds like bland late 2000s indie with strings dumped on it. I get the impression that Turner was too scared to try this on his own so brought his mate along. There is a noticeable deficit in their songwriting abilities and their voices clash like two drunk blokes doing karaoke in a pub. Turner developed his affected crooner voice in the years after this came out and it probably blends with the style better. There’s a lot of 60s psyche on this list that probably inspired this album. Unfortunately this album lacks the basic elements that makes those old ones enjoyable. It just isn’t groovy. I fucking hate the album cover as well.

Some Arctic Monkeys obsessed fella had me listen to this a few years back. It's ok I guess, but I absolutely do not get this cult of Alex Turner. The debut was alright but basically everything since has been arse. I understand this is a departure to more film soundtracky stuff but all it makes me feel is I wish I was listening to John Barry or Morricone instead. Didn't hate it enough to give it one star, mediocre.

Another James Bond soundtrack. I didn't turn it off...so its better than a 1.

I’m not the biggest fan of Arctic Monkeys, Strokes, etc., and this album feels the same to me. It’s not bad, I’m just not a huge fan.

Nicht meine Richtung

Alex Turner/Kaiser Chiefs do a spaghetti western soundtrack. Not what I asked for, and not what I really wanted to be honest. Reminded me of a much worse spin off than Them Crooked Vultures, so if this makes the list and TCV doesn't, then the compiler needs to get off the indie hype train.

Just not that interesting

In a nutshell: Arctic Monkeys frontman forms a supergroup… but they don’t play indie rock. I am flummoxed by this album. The lyrics are great, there is an ambitious utilisation of a symphony orchestra (which I applaud)… it feels thoughtfully made but it’s music I’ve heard before. If you like Morricone, early Bond movie soundtracks and an orchestra presence that rivals Belle and Sebastian’s Dirty Dream Number Two you’ve got a surprise in store. Overall: 4/10

You can´t compensate for your own mediocre musiciansship and creative imagination by hiring an arranger and a orchestra...

Eh. Basic psych pop.

4/2/24. I respect Alex Turner and Arctic Monkeys, this side project didn't hit with me although I appreciate expanding the typical sound of alternative rock of this time. Perhaps I need to listen again.

This album is trying too hard. Overly dramatic with no cause. I don't hear anything here that I'd like to listen to again.

I don't like Arctic Monkeys and I don't like this

2.8 - More “not-suitable-for-export” UK mediocrity. This one sounds like the soundtrack for a bad spy flick - loud, uptempo cabaret all in a minor key. “Time Has Come” is one exceptional acoustic ballad with echo-y vocals. The rest is crap.

Bland, boring, and unremarkable. I don't get why this album was made. I love strings, but they did nothing for me here.

It feels like the soundtrack to a musical where all the songs are the reveal of something bad. Nothing really stands out though. 2/5

This was pretty lackluster. Not terrible but to sum it up my feelings about this album would be "Yeah? So what?"

No thanks

Beatnik, “James Bondish” and “Mad Menish.”

I’m sure my wife will like it a lot more than I did.

Nah. They are called a “supergroup” on Wikipedia but it’s just rehashed Arctic Monkeys.

2 - Actually ruined my morning. Alex Turner's voice has hit new highs of drawling, boring tones. I might just be in a bad mood.

I find Alex Turner's voice annoying and this album is meh, same old. Not for me. More likely to listen to Peter Frampton again tbh.

It's fine.

Perfunctorily atmospheric but not really essential

Listenable enough, but it didn't do much for me at the time, and I'm still no wiser. Really surprised to find it on here. 2.5.

Alright. I little too acid-rocky for my taste.

I tried, but just not enjoyable which is the purpose of listening.

this is ok but definitely nothing stood out.

Started out strong. Tailed off for me as it got through the album.

Fine? Not sure why this is better than anything else in the genre.

Sounds too similar to Arctic Monkeys. Like the dude from AM in this band just recycled rejected songs here. Terrible band name too. If you like Arctic Monkeys you probably like this. I don’t like Arctic Monkeys tho.

Some pretty solid tracks on this one. Interesting guitar riffs on a couple of these, I tended to like the softer songs at the end of the album better than what felt like a rehash of the classic Artic Monkeys sound in the beginning of the track list. Overall I wasn't blown away by it, tough to even really call it an average album either.

not a big fan or the artic monkeys, so no surprise i didn't love this

I wasn't aware of this band/project/album until now. The 60's Retro-Chic vibe is interesting for a bit, but I doubt I'll ever feel a need to listen to it again. I'll give it an extra half-star so it doesn't seem as though I dislike ALL Brit-Pop. Can we just get "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" out of the way already and then leave the genre alone for a while?

Don't like Arctic monkeys, don't like this

Bit over familiar Brit poppy for me

Another artist I wasn't at all familiar with and so, unsure what to expect. It sounded a lot older than it is, by that I mean, if I hadn't read the wiki page I would have thought it was from the 70's\80's rather than 2000-and-something. I made it through the whole album, which gives it a default 2 stars. I didn't really feel there was much there to give it 3 stars though.

Doesn't do much to me. It sounds a lot like Bowie, and I don't like Bowie.

Eh. Good, but nothing notable or drawing.

I'm not a big Arctic Monkeys guy and this has some better moments to it, but it's just not hitting for me.

some are good and some are okay, *there is something so jobless and homeless about this whole album idk, not expecting it from this taylor swift very looking cover tho😭😭😭 sounds like what straight men would kill to listen, love the chamber and only the truth btw very mysterious+quirky. uhmmmm 2,4/5 i guess not what i usually listen so i need some time to think what is **actually** going on ((OHHHH NO WONDER ITS ALEX TURNER IM SOOO DUMB like exactly *there is something so arctic monkey imagine dragon coldplay and cigarette after sex about this whole album idk wish it sounds different))

too short

Cannot stand anything Arctic Monkeys

This isn't a bad album, but I'm not sure why it is in the book. It would make more sense if the book was called 1001 Albums to Listen to from the 00s. It is strange to have only one Arctic Monkeys album on the list, but also include a Last Shadow Puppets album. I would prefer AM, Favourite Worst Nightmare, and Humbug over this album. For that reason, I can only give this album two stars.

Just okay, kinda weird. Nothing stood out as a favorite and I wouldn't caret to listen to it again.

Big soundtrack vibes

Quite epic soundscape. Sounds weirdly familiar before realising it’s Alex turner. It’s okay certainly didn’t need to hear before dying but it’s fine

Ok, lot of similar sounds. Black plant is really good, should give the album a second go

Klinkt als piek Arctic monkeys, country americana influences werken goed Niet elk lied komt even goed binnen, soms wat kitsch op een niet ironische manier 2 sterren

Fun, yet inconsequential choral pop. Nothing stands out, it all kind of blends together, but it all sounds lovely. Safe. Probably wouldn’t listen again, though probably wouldn’t turn it off if it came on. Never was a huge Arctic Monkeys fan anyhow.

Unspektakulärer Indie Rock

a supergroup with a guy from the fucking Arctic Monkeys is supposed to be one of 1001 albums I hear before I die? It has an image of a woman in stockings on the cover, and there are no women in the band. In 2008. That might be all you need to know about how bland this is. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Couldn’t possibly sound more like a British super group from 2008 (bad thing).

I had never heard of this one before so was excited to try something new. A lot of the songs sounded very similar -- it was OK, not horrible, but I probably won't listen to it again. Nothing really stuck out for me and overall it didn't catch my ear

This remined me of the arctic monkies.

Not in love

Incredibly British sounding

Really prefer solo Alex Turner acoustic or with Arctic Monkeys. Miles Kane doesn't pop out a lot at me

Not for me

Didn't like this at all - epic. baroque, chanson style 'majestic' songs, all done in the annoying Arctic Monkeys northern accent. Modern age Scott Walker stuff. Awful. Also the drumming is miltarily intrusive.

1. Calm Like You 2. Standing next to me 3. The age of the understatement

Meh. The guys in the band are sexier than the music of the band. I think they’re stronger as individual sums rather than consolidated whole.

*smosh voice* SHUT UP!!!!!

So boring so nothing. NOTHING

Sounds like a movie soundtrack for a bad YA movie. 2/5 Wont listen again

Not really my kind of music but okay in the background

I broke my own rule of listening to the album with only the knowledge of the band I already have. But I felt justified because after hearing the first couple of songs I needed to better understand the choice behind what felt like a bad American Apparel inspired cover. Who is this person on the cover? Are they a band member? What's the design decision being made here — is it just more of the same lame male gaze or is there something else being hinted at? From what I can tell, it's just a repetition of the former and no trace of the latter. That's a shame. The music was okay.

Just ok

Super group Friday! Had a few good tunes on this one. Personally, I couldn’t escape the feeling I was in a Tarantino movie, which is always unsettling. James Ford is in the pocket AF though on the drums. Dude was working.

Nothing about this album stood out to me. It was ok background listening while I was working, but no song prompted a replay. I wouldn’t walk out of a store if I heard it, but I’m not going to seek it out either.

Was ok for a few songs but seriously dragged when getting out to songs 11/12

Ok I suppose

It was ok, hard to say that 4 songs constitutes an album.

Puuh jokin supergroupeille ominainen yllätyksettömyys tätä vaivaa. Joo on orkesteria ja muuta, mutta kovin turvallista rallattelua silti. Vähän kummallinen valinta tällaiselle listalle 2000-luvulta. AM on osoittautunut paljon kunnianhimoisemmaksi projektiksi.

alex turner is overly theatrical on this

nothing special with this one. tried to focus on it more but none of the tracks hooked me.

Als ik dit hoor, mis ik dat ene plaatje van de arctische apen die ik veel leuker vind.

I don’t know what I expected.

Need a 2.5

was boring. not my thang.

Thought I'd like this, but turned out a bit boring.

I do not remember this from last 2000's. Sounds very much like Arctic Monkeys. -- Oh ha, googled them and they are an English supergroup with Arctic Monkeys lead singer, so makes sense. I mean I guess it is a modern group trying to sound like the Monkees vibe a bit? Not really my thing but 2 stars for originality

Decent album. I liked the title track the best. Kind of a Marshall Tucker Band southern rock/western feel to it.

I'm glad it's short... it's nothing special but maybe it was in 2008. In The Heat Of The Morning is a decent song.

Hearing this now, I don't think I feel any different from when it came out. It's alright. Wouldn't suggest it's an album anyone must hear before they die, though.

Robert Dimery showing a bias to his countrymen here. This will certainly be replaced in future revisions to the list - could even replace with Tranquility Base if he wants to have a better and more recent Alex Turner release (I think TB will rate favorably in retrospective reviews). This one is interesting, but not deserving of this list.

Not my bag

Seemed indicative of the genre, pretty good for what it is.

Very dramatic, symphonic rock. Alex Turner’s voice is good.

boring arctic monkeys b sides with strings

1. Separate and Ever Deadly 2. The Age of the Understatement 3. I Don't Like You Anymore

indie rock aina vituttanut, 2008 paska vuosi, aaaaaaaaaaa hyvä albumi silti...... kolmosta....... huoh.......... taas............ dark side huomenna........fiilis.........tarpeeksi kärsinyt.....näitä hääppöisiä.........mitäänsanomattomia......paska vokalisti.........laitetaan kahteen heh.......subjektiivinen........ only the truth

Underwhelmed.

I just don't get why this wasn't more fun. It had elements I liked, but as a package, totally forgettable. A big meh.

Boring

Not very into this album. It's like someone took all the fun out of an Arctic monkeys album

I didn't love it, because I don't like the Arctic Monkeys that much.

Alex Turnerin musaa vaivaa aina se, että terää olis ja hittimateriaalia, mutta levyt menee lähes aina puuduttavaksi.

Couldn't get through it, not for me

скучно или под настроение не зашло вообще

I didn't like English psychedelic rock the first time around, so this is like a shit sequel to that. Not really a fan of this sound.

I lost interest pretty quickly.

Not my stuff

I’m perplexed. I know it’s supposed to be a “super-group”, but it just sounds like the Arctic Monkeys with an orchestral accompaniment, which also sounds like Muse.

Not mine

A couple decent songs but not a strong album

Rimelig ligetil, moderne inde poprock, lidt akustisk arctic monkey-vibes

the guy from arctic monkeys made a b side album 2.5

Not really as good as it should've been

Ahhh sophitsi-pop, where they take music that sounds alright and make it worse. Also mental note that that Ute Lemper album deserves a much lower score than I gave it. 4/10

Its got an oldschool 60's feel in an unmistakable modern performance - mostly very catching, a bit boring in the long run!

Stopped listening after 6 songs, the album just did not click for me. It's progressive rock, but becomes boring and way too busy after a while. The start of the album was nice, I liked it quite a bit. The problem is just that it feels like they use the same formula in every song. Not for me.

So I got this album on a Friday and I had written a review for it, saying it was forgettable and that nothing really jumped out. I've logged back in on Monday and it's true - this was just totally forgettable and don't remember a thing about it. 5/10.

Not for me.

Seems fine, but didn't do much for me. Made it through 2.5 songs. I also wasn't a huge fan of the Arctic Monkeys, so.

Whatever

I've just never been that keen on the Arctic Monkeys or late-00s dance-rock, for that matter. "Arctic Monkeys but make it baroque" did not win me over.

Just OK.

Add a measure of Turner, dash of Morricone. Stir well: With the orchestra, those ingredients form the best part of the dish. Age doesn't fold them in evenly, so its sound world is less than enveloping. I enjoyed it, but see little to recommend it as a base for other recipes.

Never heard of this before and as soon as I heard the first song, I was like "Is this an Arctic Monkeys ripoff?" Obviously one google search later and I had my answer. I loved those first two Arctic Monkeys albums, and the first couple songs remind me of those, but it seems like halfway through the album kinda peters out and I lost interest. Songs to Add to Library: Age of the Understatement

If the Arctic Monkeys were possessed by Scott Walker.

Enjoyed the last track of the album.

Indie ou pop com pouca relevância para mim.

Don't know why this is on here. Just bland indie pop. It sounds like they've tried to use the Knights of Cydonia / Ennio Morricone gimmick on half the songs as well.

Not enjoying it. Maybe I need to focus on the lyrics more, but this is just not my lane. It's like generic James Bond theme music. Is this music for doing heroine or opioids?

Has some interesting tracks and moments, but overall didn't grab me too much.

I was really big into that first Arctic Monkeys record, so I was familiar with the name of the Last Shadow Puppets, just not what they sounded like. Turns out: eh, not for me. It's almost like a classic western score, with the singer from AM on vocals. Just didn't do much for me. Favorite track: "The Chamber"

Not particularly bad, but this is in no way an essential album. Nice Scott Walker impression though.

The Jakes off

I don't really get it. Just seems like slightly dull generic orchestrated pop stuff

Not that good. Barely listened to it all

Supergroups should not sound like cheap knockoffs of the bands from which the members came. Disappointed.

Adoro tudo que o Alex Turner faz. Mas esse está longe dos meus favoritos... O que salva é o hit Standing Next To Me.

couldn’t listen to this shit at 3am

I’m really not a fan of Alex Turners voice he just irks me. This album was made in a lab to annoy me.

Oh look even more crap Brit Pop.

Hated it. Least favorite type of album... supposed to be badass or make you feel cool listening to it, but completely misses that mark. I felt like a dumbass the whole time listening to this stupid pile of trash. Only reconciliation is that the last track was decent enough if I'm being generous, not even worth my time to go see what it was called. Review: 1/10

hidden alex turner wankery? no way

Really didn't see the point of this album. Joyless pastiche

#378 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ Even before I put this on I was wondering why is this album on the list. It's pretty, nicely arranged but empty music, a weak pastiche or cheap amalgamation of the larger than life pop music of an era. This type of music requires flamoyance, huge character and person with A Voice to handle the vocals. Someone to fill in the gaps that the composer and arranger left behind. This has none of that. 1/5, a weak 2/5 at best

Thought voice sounded familiar. It’s the arctic monkeys singer (p sure). Don’t like either bands tho. Would never listen again

No thanks

I can't imagine anything more meh.

What even is this genre?

I really just can't get behind this. There's nothing inspiring and interesting going on and (maybe I'm just a xenophobic hater) I really struggle to enjoy singing with such a clear English accent.

Not for me

I dislike Alex Turner with all my being. And instead of the kick ass instrumentals you get with arctic monkeys ,it's just this boring shit. This album is my least favorite discovery so far. Bless my poor ears

this is just we've got arctic monkeys at home

I’m glad Alex Turner has an outlet for … whatever this is. Just leave me out of it.

British Cowboy music? BARF! 🤮

You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off! There, that's about the only 60's/70's reference they missed in constructing this construct of an idea, which is art maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. Alex, well he kind of got ahead of himself, you know what I mean? We are a fooking long way from Sheffield mate, banging tunes and all. My Mistakes Were Made For You is a great song and must be acknowledged. But Serge, sorry I mean Alex, seriously jammed his head up his backside on this one. And the next stop for Alex and Miles you might ask? I'm sure they are trying to get the funding for a re make of Blowup...je t'aime...je t'aime..

I really feel like I should've liked this much more than I did. Oh well.

nah. Pretty basic songs. Nothings really creative.

Never heard of this album/band Never needed to hear this album Never need to hear this album again

One of those albums that you just wonder how it even made a list on this for anybody. Head scratcher

I know I’m not even 20 albums in but this is just so infuriating. 1001 albums is genuinely far too short to be including forgettable Anglo butt rock side projects. I tried my best to listen and be in the music, and I can’t remember anything besides the same recycled jangle-brit-pop garbage. Alex Turner makes good music. But not here.

I tried. I just couldn't make it through it

Not anything outstanding. Lots of forgettable tunes.

Why did we need this?

this sucks

Drivel

It’s just not for me

Nasty business to trick everyone into listening to a junior varsity arctic monkeys album

Boring. Sounds like it should have been a thing way before 2008.

Thought this was a bad 60s mod rock album at first. To find out it was made in the 2010's. Oof. Dated, unappealing.

Hot garbage. The arctic monkeys are pretty bad in their own right…this just seems like a contrived take on their sound. So happy it was only 35 mins. 1.5/5

I'm not sure this is really on a par with Bowie or Scott Walker, but this was an okay indie approximation of that style and grandeur. Something about Alex Turner's voice makes me feel a bit sad, maybe even a bit ick, like I don't really want to live in the world that he describes, and I never really got past that.

not my favourite

Scott Walker called, he wants his tribute band back.

Boring shite. Nothing memorable slog to get through. 2/10

Boring

Just bad arctic monkeys songs.

put in on in the background and that's where it stayed

Can't get past the third track. Horrible vocals from that talentless arctic monkeys guy ruin this.

It was not good as it was indie music. The only redeeming factor is that it was relatively short.

didn't hate but noting stood out. played like BG music for me

Actively irritating

Meh, I stopped listening after 5 songs

I guess this makes sense as an Arctic Monkeys offshoot.

The kind of album that makes me want to abandon this project. I am 100% certain life would still be worth living if I had never encountered this album. 1/5: Didn't make it through the first track.

Konseptin inspiroimia ammattilaisia. Konsepti on muuten Bond-leffat. Eikä Turner ole tuntenut nautintoa säveltäessään näitä biisejä.

Did not enjoy.

Boring as Arctic Monkeys

sounds like all that arctic monkeys-era stuff not that interesting

mid, it was too cringe

1/5 this was disturbing
