Reviews (page 4 of 14)

inspired a generation

Musically I'd never really rated the Ramones. I love the look and I love the attitude, but musically I couldn't see the fuss. Most of it seemed like old fashioned rock n roll. Blitzkrieg Bop, Rockaway Beach and Rock and Roll High School could easliy be tracks by Bill Haley and The Comets. The glam pop of Baby I Love could have been by The Rubettes. It didn't make sense that they should be considered punk. Then I heard this. Turns out they were hiding the punk in the album tracks. I was wrong. This is a punk album and this is great.

Great!

This is a scarily perfect record. I can't listen to the Ramones very often because this stripped-back, minimalist pop overwhelms me after a while - two swift playbacks had me seeking a quiet room to let their ironically juvenile robotic declarations and their driving rhythm section - everything, apart from Joey's voice - seep out of my brain.

I love this album, always have, always will. The energy is superb.

Now I wanna sniff some glue.

The best music for making breakfast and getting kids ready for school!

that’s gotta be the best trio of songs to open an album with ever. so much energy and so much fun. 9th grade carpool friend demanded that i “turn it up” on the drive in to school

Tremendous album. Perfect

One dimensional in the best possible way

Ei, sério! Só tenho que agradecer aos Ramones.

This is the real thing. 1976 and a breath of rancid air. Whole album is under 30 mins and each track under 3 mins. What must it have been like to hear them at the time? Joyful and energetic- total integrity. Superb.

This is one of the most influential punk albums out there, and it’s a fun listen, too. It wouldn’t necessarily be a 5 instead of a 4 if not for when it came out, but it’s one of those albums you just have to respect. The songs are still great, too, and at less than 30 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. A fun and extremely important record.

Almost 50 years since this album and they definitely started a generational trend. They put punk on the map and this album shows just how ahead of their time they were.

Punk classic! So good

Well that was fun!

Garage rock at its finest

10/10 whole album is iconic lots of songs here I absolutely adore

So I'm a big fan, and to put a personal story in here, my daughter was taking classes at School of Rock and the unit was Ramones. I was thrilled. She shared the setlist with me, and I scoffed, and said "What? No 'Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue' or 'I Wanna Be Sedated'? Lame!" She brought it up to the musical coordinator and corrections were made... I think this is my first five rating (about 30-35 albums in) and that seems about right to me.

I don't even need to listen (again), as I still listen to the Ramones on occasion. This album is historical in the sense that it solidifies the birth of Punk - and their seminal role in creating the sound & culture of Punk Music - but to get the full flavor of their music, I highly recommend their compilation album, "Ramones Mania". Punk brilliance without artifice or indulgence.

Fantastic pop punk, although wikipedia tells me that technically pop punk came a lot later and this was just a huge influence on it. I feel like about half the tracks are deeply familiar, but the other half not so much, so maybe I've listened to a best of collection a bunch before? Fave tracks - "Blitzkreig Bop", "Beat on the Brat" and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" are all absolutely iconic. "Listen To My Heart" made me light up due to its use as the "AP Bio" theme music. And of the tracks I wasn't super familiar with already, "Havana Affair" was excellent!

The Ramones are the backbone of probably hundreds of bands that came after them. The look, the sound, the attitude... it's rock and roll in it's purest, most anarchic form, served up with a smirk. As debut albums go, this one is top notch, 29 minutes of energy and attitude that is also just a lot of fun to listen to. A few of the middle tracks are less compelling than the others, but as a complete work, this album is beyond excellent. It takes some kind of mad genius to take a dash of the brightness and melodicism of early 1960s pop and marry it with the noise and grit of the Stooges and the MC5. That's exactly what's so much fun about the Ramones. It's a crisp, no nonsense sound, full of buzzsaw guitars, punchy beats and catchy hooks. Joey Ramone serves up his vocals with pissy boredom and humor, occasionally shouty and sometimes even laced with surprising moments of sweetness. The band doesn't take themselves particularly seriously, which makes them really engaging and likeable. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Blitzkrieg Bop; Judy Is a Punk; Beat on the Brat; I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend; Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World; I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You; Let's Dance; Chain Saw; 53rd & 3rd; Listen to My Heart; Havana Affair; I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement; Loudmouth; Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue

Blitzkrieg Bop is the bone marrow of every punk song. Beat on the Brat is a great follow-up. This whole album kicks ass in that old school cool way.

Album 99 of 1001 Ramones - Ramones Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Beat on the Brat Good tunes. Short songs, short album. It comes at you for 30 minutes and it's over. Great cover, to boot.

"I Don't Care!" Fav Track: Havana Affair

Unstoppable, maximum rock and roll.

Here in the UK, boring appliance company AO has vampirically suckered on to Blitzkrieg Bop for its own capitalist means. I guess the logo t-shirt royalties were going to run out eventually. But the impressive thing is that none of this can deflate this album, which deftly blasts you with perfectly formed punk pop gems like a faulty hairdryer. Let's go!

I know this one fairly well and I love love love it. Easy 5.

This album is incredible. They just invented a new genre out of nowhere.

HELL YES! What a pleasure to revisit this classic. A game changer!

Perfect punk album

Perhaps they’ll die.

Though there were precedents with the NY Dolls this arrived pretty much like a bolt from the blue. Side one is unbelievably strong, side two couldn't sustain but still it's gold all the way through.

easy 5 stars. This album (and their next 2 or 3) are a huge deal to me. Formative as a bass player. taught me to unlearn what i had just learned. and it taught me to play fast and to not give too many fucks.

Nothing fancy here... and you don't need much to kill it. Great energy, good vocals and more of the same over-and-over for 30 mins.

Hey ho! Let's go!

very good album!

Songs are repetitive, sound alike, the singer mumbles and slurs his words, silly lyrics, but I love it.

Ripsaw songwriting and extreme efficiency, but has there ever been an album that is best heard in any of the (many) alternate forms available? Mono for the punch, live for the energy — they all triumph over the aggressive stereo separation of the original. Curious, but not worth losing sleep over when the tunes are this good.

White heat with barely a cigarette paper in between songs. Must have blow people away and pissed them off simultaneously.

It's been reviewed so many times better than I could. The opening 4 tracks make the case. Less cynical than the Pistols, less pretentious than the Clash, possibly (and as a Brit, I feel like a traitor saying this) the best band of punks first wave. Second verse, same as the first.

Fantastic

A hugely influental album in the history of rock. Tight, simple, fun, and catchy - it is awesome.

Great debut that I was more than familiar with

Perhaps the quintessential American punk album from CBGB’s crown jewel. Roars in like a lion, bashes one about the head, never overstays its welcome, unashamedly goofy, great fun.

essence of punk

A very high-quality album, a classic of punk rock, which holds from beginning to end. I listened to the album many times before this list.

One of the great albums - not just punk - of all time. Influential to so many who came after. America’s definitive punk band. Hey! Ho! Let’s go!

Just like with pretty much all punk rock, no one can see the influence until well after the fact. Nothing is different for the Ramones here. With their self titled debut, they had relatively little commercial success, with their two singles that failed to chart. Also the album didn't even crack the US Billboard top 100, peaking at 111. Critics for once knew where it was at and it was pretty much widely acclaimed at the time. Best: Blitzkrieg Bop Worst: I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Classic

Has a first album ever been a more effective mission statement, or a first song ever been a better opening thesis?

Oh my fucking god, best Friday EVER!!!! It's a brilliant debut album. These crazy cool motherfuckers hit the scene and it was never the same again. There are incredibly deep layers of genius embedded in the irreverent simplicity of it all. The Ramones rule. I wanna be your glue-sniffing, sedated boyfriend, baby!

Perfect.

perfection

It's just great. It's simple but there's beauty in the simplicity of it all. One of the most influential rock albums of all time. There are still Ramones-core style punk bands forming and making music today. If that doesn't earn a 5 I don't know what does. Side note: I don't believe any other Ramones album made this list, but it's always been my opinion that the follow up album, Leave Home was the band at its best.

This is how pop music should sound - almost 50 years old and still one of the best albums ever made.

One of the greatest punk albums of all time.

Classic!

One of the first, and one of the best punk albums!

In one of the most influential albums in history, CBGB-band Ramones popularized punk with a series of catchy upbeat songs characterized with fast tempo, minimalist melody, simple song structure, lofi production, and a whole bunch of energy and personality to inspire millions to take after their example. There's not much thought to these songs; the lyrics are silly and juvenile but irresistible. In less than a half hour, we get 14 songs that may sound repetitive at first but grow more and more on each listen. Almost all of them are earworms and I even find lesser known songs like "53rd and 3rd" and "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" stuck in my head. Starts off with their most energetic songs and then closes off with a bombastic satisfying ending "Today Your Love Tomorrow the World."

Los padres del punk rock.

A 30-minute adrenaline rush. Proof that all you need is $6,400 and a week to start something of a revolution. Just strip rock down to the basics and kick every song up to 160 beats per minute. No need to loiter, either. Cut, zip, over and out. Anyone who believes that every song sounds the same hasn't tried listening to the lyrics.

Absolute Classic tbh

This is the best album on this whole list.

Probably my favorite punk album

A classic

Yes! If only this album had Rock N Roll Radio, it would be perfection.

One of the greats. I love it but it feels slow once you're used to their blistering fast live pace (see It's Alive and Loco Live).

Awesome Punk

Very few times in history an album has made so much with so little. The Ramones didn’t want to change anything. They weren’t pretentious or ambitious. They just wanted to scream out what they felt, what they needed, how they saw the world. The result is an interesting combination of short, straight-to-the-point songs with a myriad of thematics, and an authenticity rarely saw by then. Along with Television, it represented the point of start for the NY Punk, and you can tell even today, why it is one of the best albums in history.

Haven't listened to this album in ages, and I forget how good this album is. If the Velvet Underground inspired all of their original listeners to start bands of their own, the Ramones are equally important for everyone who's ever started playing guitar or bass. Simple guitar chords, chugged eighth-note basslines, this is an album that is musically accessible to everyone in its simplicity, but has an influence that is greater than the sum of its parts. A very fun album.

One of the most important albums on this list and much more than just punk. The Ramones managed to distil the history of pop music into this record. Fast, fun and immediate

Classi American Punk

The Ramones are a band that will make me smile, anytime I hear them, until I am no longer able to smile. This band was introduced to me at a very young age by my older brothers and I remember watching Rock n Roll high school in Junior High School (I'm on the other side of 50!) Check out the movie if you get the chance. Later in life, my youngest child was introduced to the Ramones and immediately became one of his favorite bands. One his early grade school class pictures was taken with him proudly wearing his Ramones t-shirt when the majority of teachers had no idea who the Ramones were, let alone his classmates. Who else can make a major WWII German attack method one of the greatest songs ever? The answer, the Ramones. I am going to give this album a 5. I will give every Ramone album on this list a 5, just because of all the wonderful memories they provide. hope some day to introduce the Ramones to my grandchildren!

5 I realized while listening to this that I don’t have any Ram Ones on vinyl. I feel so nostalgic about Ramones. They are the second punk band that I ever loved (more on that later) thanks primarily to the Anthology CD that I borrowed from y’all. That is truly one of the best career summaries I’ve ever heard and I still listen to the (now digital) version of it quite often. This album was the backdrop for many gaming experiences, namely of course Halo on legendary with Luke. I could talk about this shit all day so I’ll end with this: while writing this review I called Green Light and put it on order. It’s 100% worth buying on vinyl and I cannot wait for it to come in.

5 There’s a lot I could say about The Ramones’ impact and legacy on not only punk, but music as a whole - though most of it isn’t anything that hasn’t already been said a million times before. So, instead, a bit selfishly, I’d like to talk about my own personal experience with the band. The first song I can ever recall hearing in my life is Blitzkrieg Bop (thanks Dad), and the first album I ever owned in my life was “Loud, Fast Ramones: Their Toughest Hits” (thanks Angel). It was Christmas at Grandma’s, I was probably like six years old, and I remember getting a new Hot Wheels set alongside it. There’s a lot I could say about my history with The Ramones and music from there, but I’ll keep it brief in saying that it sparked a life passion, led to lifelong friendships (thanks Will), and is probably why I’m taking on this very challenge of listening and reviewing 1001 albums now. In that time, I’ve learned to appreciate many, many new artists and genres, but because of The Ramones, punk has been a fascination of mine that has never dwindled in 20 or so years. While The Ramones themselves are no longer my favorite artist, they’ve always represented a safe space I can go to no matter when or where I’m at in life, and for that alone, I couldn’t rate this any lower than a 5. I don’t want to end on a soft note though, so to cap things off This album kicks fucking ass. Hey Ho, Let’s Go! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BpMw7gMOsA

Storia.

Awesome debut. Infectiously fun, uptempo album.

Legendary album. One of the best debut albums.

Excellent, I mean it’s the Ramones being the Remones

So great, one of my favourites. It either works for you or it doesn't, there's no explaining it!

Fundamental. This actually is one of the most important albums of all time and everyone should listen to it. 5/5

Eipä tästä paljon punk parane! Ei mitään liikaa eikä mitään liian vähän. Koko levy rautaa. Haara-asentoon, tukka silmille ja sahaamaan! Let’s go! 5/5

Fun times

O shit. Good Friday!

I mean, it's the debut album by one of the greatest punk bands ever, if not the greatest. So many favorites on here, from "Judy is a Punk" to "Havana Affair" and "Chain Saw". I love the quote from (I think) Klosterman that this album "saved rock from itself and punk rock from art-gallery pretension." Still, it's funny how this once very edgy and disruptive music is now played to my kid's 4th-grade class by his teacher. Times do change.

To everyone saying "uh, all the songs sound the same" are forgetting something. Yeah, it's the same song over and over, but it's a perfect song.

Ridiculous, 14 songs in 29 minutes and they all sound exactly the same. So much fun

they included a great up time cover of Let's Dance besides the hits..as the band has said, they play long songs very fast.

Year zero

The quintessential Skate 3 album. Iconic, and tailor made for 11 year-old me

Potente, directo y siempre fresco. Placer re descubrirlo

What can you do? With a brat like that always on your back What can you lose, lose?

Enjoyed it. Heard a lot before from Wes Anderson and mixed tapes

Great stuff! Short and sweet.

Great Album.

Still a sucker for punk 🤘

Oi! Oi! It's great! Oi! Oi! It's great!

Actual rock! I loved it

Brilliant

For someone who isn't a huge fan of punk, I gotta say that these guys know how to make a punk rock album. The songs don't overstay their welcome and things don't blend together like I was worried they would do. Just a great, high-energy time.

Beat on da brat

I loved this album. I never got around to listening to them. I’m sure glad I did

Have always loved them

Great album. Catchy and fun as fuck, I could (and do) listen to this over and over and never get bored. In fact, I like this sound so much that many of the bands I listen to just straight-up copy it. There's a reason why this album was so influential on punk in general and why an entire subgenre of pop punk formed around it. This is what an album should be like--upbeat, energetic, catchy, under 30 minutes with over 13 songs. The first three Ramones albums are all classics that deserve to be on this list and this one might even be my favorite out of them.

Love this album! Many have copied it but I think it was something really new and fresh about this debut. Such a simple sound. I love his voice, I love the length of the album. I love how the album starts with the classic "Ay oh let's go!" You can't beat that, absolute classic deserves to be on this list!

Wonderful, just wonderful. I love the Ramones, such a sound and such nostalgia for me. The sound of the Ramones just throws me back to listening to them when I was 13/14. They epitomise so much of the music I love, so much of it can be traced to the Ramones.

Awesome

Solid 5 star, could and did listen to it all day. Epitome of punk/rock/new wave/whatever.

One of the best albums of all time

Iconic punk pop qlbum

Rating: 10/10

Lo-Fi Hi-Energy punk rock. Makes me want to be a wild eyed teen sweating my tits off at underground gigs again.

There's something wrong about listening to this album on your phone, or your computer. You need to hear it on a record, or a dubbed tape on a crappy tape player. The Ramones should not be remastered for quality sound. My first encounter with the Ramones was when I was 15 or 16. My sister had two songs of theirs on a mixtape: "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue." The second song made me pause because I wasn't sure if this band was a serious band or not. Even if they weren't, I still liked them. My kid came in and said "Is that the Ramones?" "Yeah," I said. "Every song of theirs sounds the same," he protested. "Not really," I countered. "Once you listen to the album, you start to notice the differences between the songs. Yeah, the songs are all at about 160 beats per minute. But you can still tell." Every song on this album has been covered by someone. I think that tells you something about the album in and of itself. I like this album a lot, but I can see how non-punk fans (like my kid) could be standoffish to it. It is pure energy (Almost every song you can hear the "1-2-3-4!" in the beginning.) and not much else. I understand how progfans can be towards punk (lack of talent and intricacy), but you cannot deny what the Ramones did and how this album really started it all. It is a great album. I did start to listen to the 40th anniversary edition, and it does get a bit repetitive. So steer clear of that one. The Blitzkrieg Bop single version has some weird reverb on it. Never heard it like that before.

Perfect

Personally I prefer Rocket to Russia. But there's a certain timelessness to this debut. Most of the songs are GREAT! Blitzkrieg Bop, I Wanna be Your Boyfriend, Chain Saw, Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue, I Don't Wanna G to The Basement, there's just no let up. The Ramones were the cause of a musical revolution...and the revolution starts here 5 🌟

Classic punk, essential listening.

What's not to love? Scorching guitars, short songs, fast tempos, good album length, creation of a mf'n genre - it's perfect!

Heeey ho! Let's go!

Good enough that a 15 year old girl can wear one of their t shirts without knowing who they are I suppose. Rock n Roll High-school.

Fabulous example of punk, really enjoyed, just the right legnth

There was a time when I almost exclusively listened to albums with 12 or more tracks clocking in at around 30 minutes run time or those with maybe 7 that ran for an hour or more; 'Ramones' was firmly in the rotation. Always preferred 'Road to Ruin' but this still has an incredible energy from the iconic intro track all the way to the end. Top tier punk rock

A classic

Ramones are Ramones.

Short, loud, fast, iconic and great.

Punk af

Class(ic) album, loved it then and love it now but why did anyone remix perfection. Trying to listen to the original is like trying to find hen's teeth and the remix doesn't add anything to the songs.

Wow - I have always loved The Ramones, but listening to the entire album makes is apparent how commandeered their music is now by commercials and consumerism. Bittersweet success and a dead revolution.

Liked it - have done for a while

Great listen with a more mellow tone than I would have thought

I’m very familiar with The Ramones greatest hits, having started listening to them in college. So I figured I’d like this album if only for the hits I already love. There are many songs on this album that were new to me that I’m very glad to have heard: Judy Is A Punk, Chain Saw, I Don’t Wanna Go Down To The Basement, Havana Affair, 53rd and 3rd Let’s Dance is an enjoyable cover version of the old 50s song. My favorite new song though is “Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World.” A surprising and concise look at a Nazi soldier that evokes so much more than you might expect. Listened to this twice today. It’s been fun revisiting the Ramones and exploring their music beyond the bigger hits.

Definition of punk rock!

Mir egal was die anderen sagen

There are albums that suck. This is the polar opposite of that.

Quick album to get through. Classic punk rock, what's not to love about the album? Bunch of known songs on it too. 8/10.

Hey Ho Let's Go!

Beat on the Brat, Judy Is A Punk I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Obvio este ya lo habia escuchado entero. Discazo. Aguante los Ramones. Beat on the brat, Judy is a punk y Havana Affair lo que mas me gustan.

I love 70s-80s punk and I know that the Ramones paved a lot of the way for it, but all the songs on this album, albeit good, are so samey the whole way through. They are much better to listen to as singles.

One of the Ramones’ true masterpieces

Hey Ho... Lets Go! Die Urväter des US-Punkrocks mit ihrem Debutalbum! Nur Hits drauf! Großer Klassiker!

Klassiker

"Second verse, same as the first" (Judy is a punk) "Well let's dance, well let's dance We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too, Any old dance that you wanna do But let's dance, well let's dance" (Let's dance) ¿Le voy a clavar mis primeras cinco estrellas a un disco que tiene sólo dos melodías para las canciones?

Love a good teenage angst album

Of course a classic

FINALMENTE ESTOU SENDO CONTEMPLADA POR ESSE ALGORITMO

Mildly important record

Brilliant sound.

It's Ramones!

Such a classic.

Wonderful. So catchy, so COOL. Top notch driving music.

14 solid, classic punk jams and I'm pretty sure at least half of them are Blitzkrieg Bop. I don't care what the title is, that's Blitzkrieg Bop again, dude. I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement, Loudmouth, and Havana Affair are all Blitzkrieg Bop, three times in a row. I quite enjoy Blitzkrieg Bop.

Opening with blitzkrieg bop is crazy lol. Such a fun album and in 29 minutes. I get it.

hard to imagine a world in which this album doesnt exist. not one of my favorite records but so iconic. can't give it less than 4 even though i dont really love it.

Catchy, I thought there would only be a couple of good songs, but I liked them all and enjoyed the whole album. Blitzkrieg bog might even be one of the weaker songs

This is a great album, but it's also 29 minutes of the same song.

Its the Ramones, what more do you want? 2 minute punk songs that are fast, fun and furious. one of the punk og's and lots of fun. its not shakespeare but if you dont bounce along to this are you even alive

It's 3.75

Ok, well yes ummm LET’S GO, now.

Classic and still good. However I must cap it at four because that’s what I gave The Cramps for some reason and Lux is dearer to my heart.

4/5 some of the songs blended together, but overall I do enjoy the sound of Ramones. The songs felt liberating, rebellious and free. Like I could dance to it crazy whole night long

Oh yes. Teenage me would give this a 5 easy. Wonder what 43 year old me thinks ….theres no denying the impact these guys had on the direction of punk rock. I loved these guys. Album still rocks. And it still charms me. Funny. Dark. Short. Simple.

Fun, loud, doesn't overstay its welcome. Always enjoy the Ramones.

good stuff that I'm sure will get better with more listens 4/5

Pretty iconic band and sound

For me, The Ramones are that perfect hard rocking, angsty band. There's nothing particularly complicated about the music, just fast tempo, loud guitars, and of course their signature vocals. And important part of my teen years. Bonus, if you're drunk and screw up the lyrics when singing along, nobody knows the difference.

This album is essentially the foundation of American punk(and possibly punk in general). And what a blast of pure punk energy it is! These songs are fast, brief, and surprisingly tuneful given punk's reputation for lack of songwriting skill. While most of the songs are very similar and musically simple, they demonstrate a strong appreciation for pop hooks. Lyrics are generally not too deep, but punk lyrics are supposed to be easy to understand and straight to the point. And that's this album's biggest strength: it's straight to the point. There is absolutely no room for bloat and pretension here, which are two of my biggest pet peeves with the album's on this list. So, yes, this is a great album. It's not necessarily something I will return to all the time, but it is lean and purposeful in the best way possible. This album is ranked #5 of 18 albums for 1976. Other 1976 albums rated by me: Africa Brasil(8/18)-5 Joan Armatrading(10/18)-4

Very cool álbum

Still like it

great album

Yeah that intro definitely sold me on this vibe. Gets a bit samey the longer as we run along but hey the album isn’t that long so you don’t dwell on that for too long

Great debut from this artist, great punk rock vibes and iconic tracks

A great one 4.5/5, tough choice between the 4 or the 5...

The best Ramones album is a greatest hits. Mostly because the stuff on here that’s only okay is completely forgettable. I do like how they say massacre.

This gets an extra star for teenage nostalgia

The Ramones are a band that gets a lot of flak for being repetitive. I get it. I heard this album twice through because it was so short. Yes, each song could literally bleed into the next song, and the cuts were roughly under 3 minutes apiece. While the original group has been gone for a bit, let's be real. We wouldn't have modern rock or pop punk if we didn't have the Ramones doing a lot with very little. They weren't super technical, but damn, they paved a path like no other. This was their debut, and this is groundbreaking. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but you have to acknowledge the past to appreciate the future.

Still brilliant! Just gets on with it. Didn’t have a lot of chords to play with, but works for me!! 4

When I think of punk I think of this sound. People can say it started anywhere else, and I tend to enjoy those other artists, but there's a soft spot for the Ramones regardless. This album has the energy and the essence. It's not my regular go-to, but it's an album I've thought of in the past when I consider the sound I need at that point in time. Just straight punk, no over thinking, lots of rebellious mood. 4.1/5

Imagine blitzkrieg bop being the first track you ever release. The audacity

Hot take. This is a good album but all ramones songs sound the same so it’s hard to judge it when you don’t hear all the other songs since you assume they’re all from the same album

Fun album, very good. Knew a lot of the songs already

Blitzkrieg Bop - 5/5 Beat on the Brat - 4/5 Judy Is a Punk - 4/5 I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - 3.5/5 Chain Saw - 3.5/5 Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue - 4/5 I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement - 4/5 Loudmouth - 3.5/5 Havana Affair - 3.5/5 Listen to My Heart - 3.5/5 53rd & 3rd - 3.5/5 Let's Dance - 4/5 I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You - 4/5 Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World - 4/5 A classic. It gets repetitive after a bit but that's punk and thankfully they're in and out in terms of listening time so it doesn't get old fast. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Blitzkrieg Bop

626/1001 2026.06.01 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Is it a bit repetitive? Yes. Is it massively influential? Also yes. This basically was the archetype of "three chords and the truth" that would come to embody punk, but still has plenty of pop sensibility embedded in each 2 minute blast. 1 star for Blitzkrieg Bop alone, 2 stars for the rest, and 1 just for the importance of this record.

Pretty good. Classic Punk Album.

A little repetitive, but still a vibe

I don’t typically listen to punk by choice, but this was pretty good. Much easier on the ears than a lot of similar bands from that era. Still, a lot of it ends up sounding very similar, which is my biggest complaint about punk.

Familiar but nothing id revisit

Blitzkrieg Bop is a perfect punk song; tells you everything about the genre and still holds up even after fifty years. Only a few power chords throughout, super repetitive and short but extremely catchy and tightly put together to leave a strong impression. The rest of the album isn't bad by any means, it's pretty enjoyable and has some simple and punchy power chord riffs, but it's not entirely memorable as a project. Some of the songs feel a little similar at times, the middle chunk of tracks is slightly weak, and despite its short runtime, it felt a little long to me for some reason. Gets bumped up for pioneering one of my favorite genres of music, and I'm absolutely glad it exists, but not a favorite for me, sorry :( Some really good production though. Also 53rd & 3rd feels really slow, if it was a few bpm faster it would be better.

A classic. I think the 29 minute runtime suits it well- any longer and it might have strayed into being a bit grating, but as it stands, just great, high energy, chaotic punk.

The Ramones are a quintessential, badass punk bad that you kind of have to respect--even if you don't love them. Am I eternally tired of Blitzkrieg Bop? Yes. Is that The Ramones fault? Are all the other songs on this album pretty fucking rad? Yes. Give me more Ramones, man. I can dig it.

Look, it is definitely about 30 minutes of essentially the same song, I'm not denying that. But I like that song and it's so much fun! 4/5

Really good album with some legendary bangers. 8.3/10

It’s was alright the instrumental all sounded really similar to me and I think it may have been the same on the songs I don’t wanna go down to the basement and loud mouth but it was still not bad. All the songs were under three minutes I think so it’s a quick 29 minute album that isn’t too bad. (Also almost every song started with the drummer shouting 1234) my top three from the album are Blitzkrieg Bop, Havana Affair (which is a song the chili peppers have covered) and I don’t wanna go down to the basement

Smithers: Here are several fine young men who I'm sure are gonna go far. Ladies and gentlemen, the Ramones. (audience applauds) Mr. Burns: My, these minstrels will soothe my jangled nerves. Joey Ramone: I'd just like to say this gig sucks! Johnny Ramone: Hey, up yours, Springfield! Joey Ramone: One two three four! The Ramones: Happy birthday to you! (Happy birthday!) Happy birthday TO YOU!! (Happy birthday!) Happy birthday, Burnsie! Happy birthday TO YOU!!! (audience applauds) C. J. Ramone: Go to Hell, you old bastard! (the curtains close) Marky Ramone: Hey, I think they liked us. Mr. Burns: Have the Rolling Stones killed. Smithers: Uh, sir, those aren't— Mr. Burns: Do as I say!

Super Duper simple and blunt but they are bops for a reason. Boring day at work but watched dirty dancing with Abby.

Classic

4/5 vibe check. Like the drums a lot. Good energy

Love this album, love the Ramones

fun album. minimalist approach for every to enjoy. "judy is a punk" is an all timer.

Such a bizarre combination of 50s bubble gum pop with punk energy - truly iconic and an amazing debut album that kicked off an entire movement.

Influential but there are plenty of superior albums

blitzkrieg bop!!!

upbeat and catchy, although the songs all sound kinda similar and blend together, I wasn’t bored and helped me finish some cleaning :)

Defo one of those ‘this is our sound, deal with it’ albums but can’t really blame them. Starts great, ends great. Middle is a tad forgettable but oh well

The Ramones' music is best described by guitarist Johnny: "We stripped away all the unnecessary parts and left only the essentials." That's right. After the release of this album, all the guitar solos, complex chord progressions, eight-minute songs, and abstruse lyrics that were so overused in the '70s were consigned to the closet. All that remained was a hurricane of energy and vocal melodies straight out of the '50s. Rock 'n' roll had returned to its true essence. At the time of its release, the album sold almost nothing; critics panned it, saying it was "noise, not music." Basically, it's like giving glasses to the monkeys, but when they realized they had to put them on and saw the light, they saw a wave washing away everything in its path. Thousands of guys (and girls!) with no musical education realized they could just pick up a guitar and rock for fun! Without the Ramones, there would be no punk rock, no thrash metal, no hardcore, no emo, no any modern guitar music. And life would be decidedly more boring!

Classic

Every track is like an explosion.

A classic, so influential on so much music I listen to on a daily basis. You can really hear the bones of a lot of the punk scene in this record. A ton of fun if not a touch repetitive as far as the sound of the instruments, which makes sense given how quickly they recorded.

Seminal record for punk music. Raw, direct and fast.

I enjoyed it :) 4.4

blitzkreig bop i already know! hey ho let’s go! very repetitive but good

This is one of the most important albums of all time. It didn’t just influence punk rock — it basically started it. While listening I felt pure joy and energy from start to finish. It’s such a great ride. 14 short, fast, loud songs in just under 30 minutes — no solos, no bullshit, just straight-to-the-point punk rock. Joey’s vocals are perfect for this band, and the lyrics are simple, funny, and catchy as hell (“Beat on the Brat,” “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Judy is a Punk,” “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue”… all classics). Everything about this album is great: the raw sound, the attitude, the minimalism, the humor. It’s dumb in the best possible way. My only real complaint is that it’s way too short. I wish it went on for another 20 minutes. Still, this is pure punk perfection. A true classic that sounds as fresh and dangerous today as it did in 1976. If you want to understand where modern punk began, this is ground zero.

i know that most of the riffs in the song would sound the same before i listen to it but its just so funny when the next song plays and you think that its still the same song. 4/5

heerlijk strakke 30 minuten. totaal niet meer zo edgy als het ooit was, maar zo gaan die dingen. beat the brat with the baseball bat!!

Same song for an entire album. Still good. Classic even. I hear a lot of other bands in this album.

Funny album. Can clearly see how life changing it would've been hearing it in the 70s when the fastest most aggressive thing you've heard thus far is Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin, but compared to what came after it's pretty weak in that sense. Still a good album, if a bit samey

Iconic sound, remasters definitely provide better quality.

I have listened to this album a ton. Really fun and some great jams.

smithers, mande a matar a los rolling stones

This is so close to being a 5 but for some reason I can't pull the trigger. But it's pretty great punk rock.

Probably the best punk record out there, besides maybe London Calling or even Sound of Silver. Has that classic punk feeling of very simple songs yet every single track here is a banger. Great energy all the way through.

kind of samey but this album was SO impactful on the punk scene i don't really care.

Very energetic,joyful

I’ve never listed to the Ramones and yet it sounded exactly how I thought it would. Punky, and yet even at this early stage, poppy - it the pop music was from the 50s. It all sounded the same - but in a good way? It was very repetitive and yet I wondered if that was the point. Exhilarating and boring at the same time.

Classic

Almost dead split on whether this is a 4 or a 5. I wanna say it's a 5 just because of how good and important I think the Ramones are. But as good and as consistent as they are, they kinda are a band best consumed in a greatest hits capacity and while this is one of their more consistent and more lasting records it may just have to be a strong 4. But still love the Ramones. Iconic band, iconic sound, iconic look, iconic album cover. So. Damn. Catchy.

Pretty great. I was expecting a bit more grit from their vocals though, they sound almost too clean.

All the elements for me to dislike. Repetitive songs. That pop punk radio friendly sound. Lyrics you can't quite decipher or make sense of (especially when they pronounce massacre mass-a-cray). They even took there name from Paul McCartney (an alias he used when checking into hotels). Yet.... Somehow it all works, and works well. I just can't sit still (or be downtrodden) when listening. And for a debut this album is so refined it feels more like a best of. Two years before Never Mind The Bollocks you can see what McLaren was aiming for (though he missed the target by a country mile).

There are plenty of toe-tapping songs on here. The simplicity only makes the songs more fun to listen to. The album does suffer from many of the songs sounding very similar. However, it's too enjoyable to knock it too much for this. Obviously this was a pioneering record, so it's 'important', but unlike many albums in this vein, this is actually something I'd want to listen to.

The sound of this group has transcended time.

Strong start, consistent sound, easily listen to all tracks.

Good and classic. Not many differences music wise for the different songs though.

I love these punks. What an incredible debut album

What it lacks in dynamics, it makes up for in sheer volume, urgency and power.

was fun rating a 4 but actually prob more a high 3

joa classic

This is a great album, filled to the brim with punk energy. Is it repetitive? Yes. do I care? No. The point isn't to create intricate songs that go on for ten minutes. Short bursts of musicality and rage is all you need sometimes. Do the songs blend into each other? Yes, but again I struggle to care about that. The point is that the Ramones are angry, want to express their anger, and did so in 14 songs, all under half an hour. I'll definitely listen to this album again. and not just for Blitzkrieg Bop.

realllllyyyyy vibed with this. fear i didn’t lock in to listening to it the first time so will have to give this another go

Jævlig fengende! Bra arbeidsmusikk.

3.5 men runder opp i dag.

What's not to like?

Funny that the first album chosen for me was a key one from my teen years! Not listened for a while, but the Ramones' surf punk was the soundtrack of my summer back then - I don't think you can beat Blitzkrieg Bop and Judy Is A Punk for anthems. The three-chord 2 minute song was often ridiculed, but it's the simplicity that makes them so good, and there are some really clever lyrics.

Pretty awesome

Hey! Ho! Let's go! I was wandering along the streets of New York City when I accidentally joined a New Orleans style marching brass band. I was on a stopover in NYC, en route to California for a work event, ambling along 50th street. Before I knew what had happened, a marching band came out of nowhere and funneled me towards the entrance of Radio City. It was on the eighth floor of that building that The Ramones recorded this album. I have to admit though, the first time I heard this, many years ago, I didn't fully get the Ramones. Based on the album cover, and any images you see of them, The Ramones look like the coolest, most hardcore punk rock band. I know they didn't invent punk, but they're often credited as early pioneers of the punk rock sound. But when you listen to their music, it doesn't match the edgy vibe they put out in their image. I used to joke with a friend of mine about The Ramones and The Undertones being these tough-guy punks, but then singing songs about their perfect cousins or how they want to be your boyfriend, like a 50s doo-wop showband that parents would love. Ok, so it was just a surface level joke, because when you look a bit deeper, their lyrics are actually pretty damn edgy, dark and confrontational. For the most part anyways. “Blitzkrieg Bop” uses WWII imagery to describe the energy of a concert. It's a classic tune, and my favorite Ramones song. “Beat on the Brat” suggests active parenting with a baseball bat, “53rd & 3rd” is about prostitution, and “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue” is… well, self explanatory. There's loads to love here. The tunes are catchy, minimalist, melodic and raw. Sure, after a while Joey's vocal style is a bit much to take, and the guitar tone and song makeup gets a bit “samey”. But the impact and influence can't be overstated. These songs essentially became an archetype for the New York punk scene sound for years to come afterwards. As did the image of The Ramones themselves. Even if the two didn't line up perfectly for me initially.

Loooove it

It's great. It's mindless, silly, gonzo punk. Admittedly some songs are very similar, but they weren't trying to write that sort of album and as it's less than 30 minutes long, I can forgive them.

Favorite Track: Blitzkrieg Bop

3.5 stars, surprised by how many songs I knew from before

Classic punk rock. Simple and raw, full of energy.

I knew Blitzkrieg but never heard a full album by them before. It was good, but a lot of them were a bit samesy.

Classic! One of the earliest examples of punk rock! This must have sounded amazing when it came out back then. Seeing them live back then must have also been amazing. The music here sounds so fun anyone who doesn’t like this album clearly has no understanding of good music and should leave this project now!

With the Ramones, I’ve always wondered who or what they were actually parodying—maybe themselves in the end? Their debut, however, is iconic, and in my view, that’s really only due to the cover art and the first two songs, “Blitzkrieg Bop” (whose lyrics I still don’t fully grasp) and “Beat on the Brat.” After that, it’s more of the same: the simplest, yet catchiest, absolutely flawlessly performed, and impeccably produced punk rock. Still, I’m not sure how to rate it. On the one hand, it’s certainly a classic. On the other hand, I don’t feel the need to listen to it again right away. 4/5

Can't hate it. They aren't my fav of the initial wave of punk, I think the Stooges and NY Dolls have them beat to be frank, but it's perfectly fun music at the end of the day. A solid record.

Repetitive, sure. Simplistic, sure. Great, definitely. 4 Star

Excellent album that doesn't overstay its welcome. Starts with an absolute banger, but I do think the songs slowly get a bit weaker as the album goes on. Biggest critique: all the tracks do sound the same.

Some of these songs aren't great -- the emphasis on "little girl" in "I wanna be your boyfriend," the songs about sniffing glue or not wanting to go in the basement sound sort of like saying stuff just to kill time, but all of them are going on my workout playlist so this is a 4. Keepers/Top 10: Blitzkrieg Bop

This is punk at its greatest. Sloppy singing, sloppy lyrics, sloppy everything. This album is a towering achievement in punk. Highlights: Blitzkrieg Bop Beat on the Brat I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You

Hey Ho!

Really like the first and ninth tracks. I think it starts to sound like one long song. I like their use of rhythm, they use it to convey a lot of energy. I enjoyed.

I'm going to rate this higher than my actual affinity for it because of its historical significance. Otherwise, I liked this better when I was younger, but the raw, simple riffs don't land with me as much as they did when I was more controlled by hormones and impulsive behavior. Also, as a side note to the haters: yes, their songs all sound the same, they use the same riffs repeatedly, and their lyrics are sophomoric. That's the point, and they were the first big name punk band to get popular doing it.

Rating: 8/10 It’s the fucking Ramones, not much more can be said about how seminal and influential the debut self-titled album is. A whole bunch of punk pop songs that rock hard through their raw energetic nature, simple repetitive song structures, and just a few chords

Classic beast of an album. Not perfect due to repetition but very good and a meaningful album of my childhood.

Album No. 0189 on my list. My knowledge about punk music, especially early punk, is expandable, but I had never actively pursued it. So I was glad to have “The Ramones” as my album of the day just the day after listening to “The Clash”. Two key punk debut albums in a row! I had known some of the tracks on this, but was curious how the whole thing would hold up. And I actually thing it’s pretty good! Peak punk: straightforward, short and sweet, message over music. Compared to The Clash, I found the whole thing somewhat less political and somewhat more personal instead. There are several love songs on this, some of them even reminding me of The Beach Boys in the sense that they are short, easy to listen to, and simple (but not in a bad way). This is a less aggressive, but more pop-leaning version of punk. Certainly very influential and deserving of its spot on the 1001 album list. In line with the genre (or at least my perception of it), there is sometimes little variability between the songs, but it’s certainly still possible to pick out some of them for future playlist-based listening. I’ll add “Blitzkrieg Bop”, “Judy Is A Punk”, “Havana Affair”, “53rd and 3rd”, and “Let’s Dance” to my playlist. 4/5 stars! (Might even increase this in the future.)

Just Fun

Pretty good album with some riffs and joyfull atmosphere. Rate 8/10

fun, rockey

I really like the guitar tone when they overdrive it.

I am familiar with the Ramones. I like the Blitzkrieg Bop the most! I think Bruce Springsteen used to write songs for them as well.

One of the quintessential punk rock albums and incredibly influential. It may be a bit one-note but that note is very very good (and very fast).
