Reviews (page 2 of 9)
Over bijzonder stemgeluid gesproken. Maar het blijkt dat Tina toen nog (lang) geen oma was, zo zie je maar weer. Ik ga mijn 4,5 voor dit album lekker naar boven afronden.
I knew TT was a legend for a reason, but sometimes you don't take the time to stop and smell the hairspray; today I did, and what a glorious scent it is! Turner originated this quintessentially 80s sound, the gee-tars, the synth, the funk and obviously, she does it the best. I wouldn't say this is a genre I usually gravitate to, but there is such a sensuality and genuine-ness to this album that Tina has seduced - nay - private danced (!) me into a true fan. Too late, don't try and stop me, my hair is already teased nice and up! There's heart, there's heartbreak, there's danceability. WHO NEEDS A HEART WHEN A HEART CAN BROKEN (sashays sadly). Exactly.
That is such a great album
Man this album rocks. Tina Turner is so talented she can take a song like "Let's Stay Together" and somehow almost take it away from the already legendary Al Green. Seriously powerful, emotive performance. I hung onto every word. Turner seems to be showing off just how easily she can command your attention, whether it be rocking the fuck out of a sincere ballad. The choruses all hit. "Help" might be the only weak spot but even that song is insanely good, for Beatle cover standards at least. Walked away from this album wondering why it's not in rotation more, what a banger.
Smash hit after smash hit!
A very damn good slice of 80's pop. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. This is the most ‘80s-sounding ‘80s album there could possibly be. That is a dealbreaker for some people & a selling point for others; thankfully, I’m “others”. Yes, it’s absolutely over the top at points, overblown on occasion, deeply overdramatic at times, and constantly feels like it’s an instrumental break away from being in a Rocky training montage, but part of that weird adrenaline is what sells ‘80s production like this for me. Somehow, this feels like a blend of Prince’s pop sensibilities for the time with a touch of Depeche Mode involved, and with Tina Turner’s 45-year-old vocals belting out with a sort of feminine anger that can only be wrought upon from her history with Ike, the entire album’s bombast works hand in hand, where you can tell it’s really cheesy at points, yet done so earnestly you can’t help but play along with it. Of course, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” plays itself more subtly (& with the least subtle fake harmonica put to tape in the decade), and perhaps that’s why it was the biggest hit on the album. Either that, or it’s just legitimately that catchy with the slight reggae groove & it endured for that very reason. (It is that catchy, by the way.) Every other track hits that slight bombast, and while a lot of them do crash into a “really stale outro” wall because of it, the variety of the album saves it from ever feeling like a big issue, at least for me. Ultimately, I do think the enjoyment here boils down to “how much do you like ‘80s production?”, and if you like it a lot, you’ll like this album a lot, even if it’s reliant on covers for the entire back half, due to the refreshed ‘80s bombast on them. “Let’s Stay Together” might be a little egregious, & “Help!” might be a bit overdramatic, but the rest work well. If you don’t like ‘80s production, you will probably not like this, since Tina Turner’s vocals will feel “wasted” on crummy drum machines that remind you too much of Sussudio & have you yearning for real pop/soul music like Aretha Franklin. (This is where I would recommend looking up Aretha Franklin’s 1980 cover of “What A Fool Believes”, which is incredible.) I think it’s a good album, and while it certainly has flaws, something about the weird adrenaline rush of ‘80s production just appeals to me in an infectious way. It’s a 4.5 that I’ll bump to a 5.
Now this is whiy I enjoy this project.. never would have thought twic e about this record...when I heard I realise what a blockbuster it was..also I didnt relaise that Private Dancer was written By Mark Knopfler.. dude could have retired from the royalities of that alone. Respect
Looking at the wikipedia article there are so many different versions of this album... not sure what Spotify has, but I'll just review the international edition that seems to end with '1984'. While on the subject, the amount of different writers for this is quite staggering. Almost reminds me of a Beyonce record we had on this list that had like 4 different names per song. But I digress. Having never heard this record, I was excited since I know Tina has some banger songs to her name. And I was not disappointed. This is a stellar album that really stands out among the recent drought on the this list. Tina's voice is obviously one of a kind with her almost distorted quality to it. But that isn't the only thing good with the record, the orchestrations are really solid with cool arrangements and some funky 80s synths. The mix sounds really good too. 'What's Love Got To Do With It' is the star of the show, and the only track I think I've heard before. But almost all other tracks are really strong as well, with standout tracks in 'Show Some Respect', 'I Can't Stand The Rain', 'Private Dancer', and 'Let's Stay Together'. The album lost a bit of its oomph in the last tracks, but didn't fall through completely. I really enjoyed this album and it's one of the better ones in recent times. Feeling it was a mistake to not give 'Songs From The Big Chair' a 5 star so will make up for my cowardliness by gifting this a 5.
She rocked. Also... every once in a while I heard the sax guy (Tim Cappello...the guy from The Lost Boys - 'I Still Believe') and that's always a treat.
one of the best voices out there
Tina is the immortal queen
Iconic
This is a classic and timeless masterpiece
I have only ever heard "What's Love Got to Do With It" before today and it is safe to say I have been missing out! Clearly a very 80's album but I don't see anything wrong with that. Loved that Tina's voice was the main platter served and not the background instrumentals. Would listen again and would buy this album.
Thoughts before listening: Tina Turner was a massive pop icon at this time in her career. The title track for this album is one of the biggest songs of the 80s, and I'm sure there are more hits on this as well. Not typically my style of music, but I'm sure this will be a fun listen. Review: This was so much better than I was expecting. I figured I was in for a fun pop r&b album with some recognizable hits, but what I got was that plus full on rock songs and some nice reimagined covers. This is a true snapshot of 80s pop with a Michael Jackson production style to a lot of the songs, but that's okay since it's a sound I really enjoy. Lots of hair metal style guitar mixed in with pop beats. I am leaning 5-stars on this one for the surprise factor as much as anything else.
Pretty awesome. Never listened to this album before.
I’ve always like Tina Turner but I had never listened to a full album of hers before. Glad I did! Want this on vinyl. Definitely an album I will listen to again!
delightful, so classic she’s amazing, but way too long wtf
Tina at her best.
I LOVE IT. It's an album without any skips! Give's me an hyper version of Sade.
Love!! Have listened to this album many many times.
Tina mit ihrer grossartigen Stimme, dazu präzise (kommerzielle?!) Produktion, bluesig, popig. Definitiv ein Meisterwerk!
Super!
thee defining voice of the rock genre in the 80s. goes through so many conflicting emotions each delivered with the same passion and force. 5/5
The album with What's Love Got To Do With It? Yeah banger
Had mever heard the album in order just the singles and this in order is a masterpiece of an abused, self healing strong independent woman saying no more and shit better change or else Ill leave and tale everything with me. She was worth it and she knew and made the jump willing to sacrifice love and her career. This is the ultimate feminist album with a storytelling like no other because she was doing it most likely autobiographic style. Would have never thought ever of giving a Tina Turner album 5/5 and she deserves every single star
this record rules. the production sounds like that MacGruff the Crime Dog anti-drug tape. the cover songs are bananas. i was already gonna give it a 5 before 1984 started and i spit out my coffee. don't be a coward - go for the five-hour remastered edition.
An absolute classic through and through. I also have a bunch of the songs now constantly cycling through my brain over and over. Pure 5 out of 5!
Great singer and dancer!
The Good: Well you better… to me! The Bad: The fucking hair… The Ugly: Nothing, really! Tiny Turner, what a tour de force! My brother was the one who played this album over and over, so I really didn’t like it at all, because my brother had a shit taste in music… But there was that one song that I couldn’t get enough of, Steel Claw! Probably the only song on the album that wasn’t a hit! Years later, I would blast that one in the car, while my rocker friends were wondering who the hell this hell cat was! Listening to the album, 40 years later, what an absolute treat and gem of what the ‘80s was about! 5*
Simply the best
Personal nostalgia on playback; Tina is an amazing singer gone too soon.
It's great, but I mean, it's the queen Tina ! 5 out 5 !
Now this is an album. I love this. And I also realized she is my age when she made this album. Doesn't seem so old anymore...
Algjör drottning
Siren Turner rarely would be less than 5 stars under any circumstances; here sounds frequently like Mick Jagger in high heels (and with much better vocal range and depth). Tinny 80’s synth and drums cannot dilute the impact of the vocal perfection and expert songcraft on offer here. The ‘Futuristic’ 1984 and gripping rocker ‘Steel Claw’ were fun discoveries. ‘Can’t stand the Rain’ and Let’s stay together’ given the full 80s treatment I could’ve probably done without, so this is admittedly a 4 and change round-up
Classic album by a legendary woman.
Raw voice
Steel Claw! Holy shit. After decades with her abusive husband, the other half of The Ike and Tina Turner Review, at 45 this was her divorce/comeback album. You could buy a tinny second hand radio for $200 but it came with a car, and shorter AM versions of Private Dancer and What's Love Got to Do With It were on constant play, super annoying. This is my first time paying attention, and hearing them in full length, full stereo glory, so much better than I ever realized. But her covers of Al Green's Let's Stay Together, Help, and I Can't Stand the Rain top them. I could have done without her version of Bowie's 1984, but Steel Claw goes to 11.
What a bunch of Tina Turner hits. Those alone justify 5 stars for this album. Ok, it's '80s sound, but come on, it wasn't that bad, and it was my teenage years. Back to Private Dancer: a treasure-trove of well-produced and performed songs, no filler.
Incredible album. R.I.P. Tina Turner
Ai vitsi. Hienoa musaa. Itse ymmärsin vasta ysärillä ja Rouvan sääret nähtynä livenäkin
Femman levy! Tina on kunnon rokkimimmi. Paljon hyviä biisejä levyllä. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hitto että oli kova lätty! Soundit oli kohillaan ja Turneria on aina kiva kuunnella!
awesome. very fun listen
Trop cool !
I'd never heard a Tina Turner album before... I don't know why. But now I can say that all this time I've spent without listening to her music hasn't exactly been a life well lived. 5 stars.
Go on, Tina! 🔥 What a voice. Thoroughly enjoyed this album, every song as catchy as the next. Fantastic vocals and loved the guitar! 5 ⭐️
A Milestone
It's Tina
TT really went out to hit all the genres it seems she loves. Does a wonderful job of bringing powerful soul vocals to pop and some rock n roll. She’s good and will always be missed.
LOVE HER
This fucking ethereal being gives us everything we crave and more.
Tina Turners earlier music I find much more appealing. But that said I quite enjoyed this incarnation of TT. Album is packed full of big hits and despite the industrial levels of production TT's voice still has authenticity and soul. Favourite was Help.
“What’s love but a second hand emotion?” is an all time line!
Tina turner could make a case for best voice in music all time
Why did I ignore this in my teens?
This one brings back lot of memories. It was on my turntable daily for a long time. Tina's voice is amazing from first to last cut and she captures the life of the downtrodden on Private Dancer as well as Tracy Chapman did with Fast Cars. Masterpiece of an album.
Never knew how stacked this album was
One of the classic albums of the 80s!!
Got this one too!
So many hits
I'm almost 500 days in, and over that time I've realised that the moment you get an album matters almost as much as the album itself. A good album can hit you poorly if you aren't in the mood and vice versa. This hit at the perfect time. Driving an 80's sports car while the sun is setting to your holiday destination, Tina Turner's Private Dancer is the perfect soundtrack for it. Some banging 80's pop of the good kind, the not Scritti Politti or Shakin Stevens kind. The hits on here everyone knows and are a joy to listen to again. The synths are great, the cheesy trumpet and guitar solo's are great and Tina Turner's voice is better here than it's ever been. This isn't the best album on this list by a long shot, but it was the perfect album to have gotten this very day.
love Tina
Well done to the hipsters for putting in a genuine pop smash by a major female talent. Tina was a massive talent too and some of the songs here would have been dreadful pap in the hands of a lesser singer. Any album with Jeff Beck gets an instant two stars added to its score. And Jeff is equal to Tina’s talent. Vale to the both of them. For reasons that don’t need to be gone into here her extraordinary work with Ike is difficult to judge. It is more dangerous, raunchier and wilder. But the trauma porn that fuels a lot of this stuff is too much for them. So we have this. Like the Bonnie raitt album it’s slick, it’s professionally done. It beyond competent. And you can see the flash of ranch, of sleaze, of sex occasionally. This album made her the superstar she always was. 6 stars.
A fascinating pop record. Firstly hats off to whoever in Capitol Records decided to get behind her and find great songs. Secondly to then give her an array of producers to work with, which is what makes this a terrific record. Incredible to think Martyn Ware is involved here. All the awfulness of her experience on the rock and roll road, literally and metaphorically, sadly overshadows her incredible ability as a recording artist. What this album does is give her a eclectic mix of tunes which affords her the opportunity to show off her range as a singer and interpreter. It is a great album. I know that sounds like the bleeding obvious, but the whole record hangs together as a fantastic album. The hits are the hits, brilliant, timeless, tattooed on our brains forever. But the album tracks are equally special, her takes on 1984, Better Be Good to Me, Show Some Respect are just fantastic. The 80's drums are a bit nasty on occasions etc, but importantly some of the production stuff does not get in the way of the performance. A great record, she's simply the best.
Ms. Turner I love youuuu
When people talk about Beyonce being so great it's because they never heard Tina, Aretha or Whitney. Tinas voice can move mountains. Icon.
outstanding
YES!
So many hits that I didn't know were originally on this album
banger after banger
Wow— what a banger. These songs are fantastic! Smooth 80s instrumentation, great lyrics and an amazing voice. The covers are amazing too
banger after banger. even the extended edition added songs go hard (Thunderdome song)
I always forget how much I like Tina
Exceptional
I mean... how could anyone give this less than a 5? And now that I'm done with my review, I've reviewed the other reviews, and apparently a lot of alleged "people" could and did give this less than a 5 - as in, like, 1s and 2s. Assuming no one would bother putting in the effort to spambot this silly challenge, I can only, once again, conclude that I'm simply living on a different planet than the majority of humanity... and thank goodness for that!
Tina auf dem Höhepunkt Ihres Schaffens. Ihr gelingt eine perfekte Symbiose zwischen Soul und Rock. Mit dem fulminanten Leitsong „Private Dancer“, und den Hits „What‘s Love Got To do with it“ und „I can‘t Stan The Rain“. Aber auch die weiteren Songs gliedern sich excellent ein. 👍
The kind of album that makes you wanna sing along to it at the top of your voice.
Love Tina!!
Absolutely amazing! But I can't help imaging the producers bopping their head with an uncomfortable look on their face listening to pop bangers about domestic abuse. At least that's how I reacted.
Bangers none stop bangers. Favorite fact about this album is “Private Dancer” was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
The production is cheesy as hell on this but there are just too many great songs and her vocal performances are incredible. She also more than does justice to both a classic Beatles song and Bowie song.
I can’t stand the rain!!
Near perfect album.
Der Sound meiner Studienzeit Unverwechselbare Stimme
Another really fun album this week, wow. It feels like the slog through shitty britpop fans might finally be over, or more likely temporarily on hold. Tina Turner was such an incredible vocal powerhouse, it’s hard not to get goosebumps from her singing. This is an album with some really incredible singles, but also some underrated deep cuts that deserve a little more credit. It’s soulful and bluesy, but it’s got that 80’s energy coming from the electric guitar style and all the synths. It’s such a fun sound throughout, it’s really hard to find any fault at all. The way she reimagined the classic Beatles tune “Help” is really quite striking. It’s a beautiful version of an already excellent song. The kind of cover where an artist really makes it their own. This album really earned its 5 stars here.
What a fantastic run of albums the past few days! “What’s Love Got to Do With It” is of course the most recognizable song on this album and it is an absolute 10/10 no notes classic. But the rest of this album holds its own, as well. Her (or her producers’) reimagining of “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “Let’s Stay Together” are both fantastic, but “I Might Have Been Queen” and the title track are both standouts as well. Interesting to note Mark Knopfler wrote the title track and originally intended it for Dire Straits. I could happily listen to Tina Turner belt the phone book. Another 5 ⭐️!!!
❤️
Every song is a masterpiece
THE Comeback Album
Despite the coking up of the BPM, par for the course in ‘83-‘84, this is absolutely mastery of a songstress at the top of her game.
Awesome all classics!
Bueno
The goddess is back!
This is a no-brainer. So choc-full of 80's goodness and hits it's no wonder it's a solid 5*****
What a pleasant surprise. This absolutely rips. Phenomenal powerhouse vocal performance backed by the most maximalist, genre-smashing, sensual, bombastic production money could buy. Even the cover songs are transformative. I fucking loved this.
A classic album. Great songs all around! My favorite songs were probably, “Let’s Stay Together”, and “1984”.
Maybe the greatest comeback album ever
One of the best performers of the 80s. I'll always remember the roadtrip I made with a friend from Nashville to Chicago to see Tina live. It was incredible. This album has some of my favorites along with a few I've never heard before. I love her feist, strength, and raspy rocker voice. 4.5 stars.
This was wonderful. I was really struck by the lyrics and the musical vibes throughout the entire album. Nothing short of fantastic.
Great
Looking at all the 1 and 2 star reviews for this banger of an album leads me to ask the question: are any women doing the 1001 album challenge? Or is this site strictly just loser dudes in stupid hats? 5 star album, bite it you scum. Queen Tina forever
yeeeeea motherfuckerrrrrrr
Queen Turner has so much fun. I love her covers.
This terrific album by Tina Turner turned (no pun intended) me from familiar with her work to a bona fide fan. The ratio of absolute bops to skips is staggering. Obviously there are multiple tracks that exhibit her chops as a soul icon with the album opener "I Might Have Been Queen", the seminal "What's Love Got To Do With It", and another smash "Let's Stay Together". The catchiness and vocal performance on these songs stands the test of time even in 2024. Another aspect of Turner that I was only partially aware of was her rock influence, which are evident on the tracks "Show Some Respect" and "Steel Claw". These songs blend the rock sound of that era with some 70s funk sounds wonderfully. These songs combined with the titular epic "Private Dancer" create one of the most complete R&B records I've ever heard. An absolute powerhouse of an album. 9/10
Großartige Songs einer tollen Künstlerin!
Tina is simply the best! May her soul rest in peace!
This is so much better than I remembered.
Great Album
All time classic
What is there to say? It's Tina Turner...5/5
my 80's bias is showing. 5/5.
Tina is otherworldly and there should bee statutes erected for her greatness. Total 80's sound and some of it was super cheesy but her presence and voice are transcendent. Amazing!!
Ok. This is the record with: What’s Love Got to Do with It, I Can’t Stand the Rain, Private Dancer, Let’s Stay Together, and Better Be Good to Me. Basically, all of her best songs. All from her first solo album. This woman was a goddess.
Fantastic album
I love Tina. Great album
Wonderful and great to listen regularly
Once I got past the 80's dance vibe, I truly enjoyed the whole album. Most of the tracks were new to me and I could feel the foundation of OG R&B.
So many songs on this album, damn Tina. What a bomb ass album. No skips. I forgot how much I love her music.
So viel Power!
She was a national treasure. 5 stars.
This album was just fantastic. What an icon.
Absolutely excellent. What a total Queen she was
Álbum bom demais, parecia que eu estava no carro dos meus pais a 15 anos atrás ouvindo 101.7
Tina is a legend. Unique person, unique voice. Great songs!
Excellent album with some great songs
This was great, Tina’s amazing.
Tina is one of the all time greats. I remember when this album came out. It was a smash hit. Classic.
OH MY GOD SHE ATEEEEEE WHAT THE FUCK
biased cause i grew up w/ tina turner but idc this is heat
Very 80s. I would put "What's Love Got To Do With It" at the top of the list of "most 80s songs ever". Lots of people might think that is a pejorative but I thought it was amazing. Tina's voice shines, but everything was fun, even when the songs were sad. Didn't much care for the "Help!" cover, but it was original and inventive.
I don’t know anything about Tina Turner but I think I love her now — 10/10
I'm a private dancer now.
An electrifying come back album with great accompiament.
Amazing! Loved all of it.
Really solid album. A lot of great songs that I had totally forgotten about, but knew them as soon as the first notes played. Probably a 92-93, but I’ll give it a 5. 1984 is the only song that seems out of place. It isn’t very good. But it’s the last song.
Fuckin sick
Never before have I intentionally listened to Tina Turner, she just happen to sing the background music of my youth. No wonder she is sampled by countless artists, no wonder this album is in the Library of Congress. This album contains elation, pride, hurt.... though she may not sing with the warmth of Whitney Houston, she sings with an emotion that is palpable and clearly inspired generations.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
Amazing powerhouse of an album from Tina Turner.
Great album. Not too long, almost every track is great and really shows off Tina tuners amazing vocals. The only track that felt a bit dated was 1984.
Very good, never listened to more than one song
Great album
I love it but what’s live got to do with it?
5/5 for tina’s vocals throughout. good songs mostly especially the singles. I recalled just how good What’s love got to do with it is. great sound on that track. Private dancer also great song.
Never realized 1984 was a Bowie track written in the 70s for a George Orwell-themed musical. I'm surprised to say I think it's the weakest track on an excellent album.
Hadn't heard before
Super 80's Vibes. Stellar voice.
Är väl nästan oförskämt om jag inte ger den här en femma. Vilken hitparad.
The production on these songs is so 80's, and I mean that in the best possible sense.
The goddess
Another one of these perfect 80s albums that only got better over time. I like everything about it: TT's vocals, the strong song writing, the slick production, it is all simply perfect. Standout song is of course Better Be Good To Me. Best song of the 80s? It has these Miami Vice vibes - it is even better placed on that first classic MV soundtrack album (as with every song on that soundtrack).
ROAR!
I've never heard this album in full, but I've heard the hits... hory shet what a lesson in 80s pop/rock. It's big, loud, confident, well produced and what a great performance. This is an easy 4, maybe even a 5.
It's one o already have. It is really good. The original songs are by and large all classics - 20 years into her career, she decided that somewhere between Prince and The Human League was a cool move. Could you imagine Oasis pivoting to post punk and PC music in 2010? It's a baller move, and it mostly works - only time and advances in electronic music have aged it a little. And all 4 covers are great choices. Help stripped back to become an accusation to those who did nothing to help her, Ann Peebles jazzed up with bleeps, and not the most obvious Bowie track. Should be a four because of the over quantised production, but my enjoyment of it gets it top marks!
Amazing - I'd forgotten how good this album is.
This album really grew on my with every listen. First 6 songs are all bangers and the others songs are quite good as well. Really liked Show some respect and I can't stand the rain. Funny to hear the Dire Straits influences on Private Dancer as well!
I was really surprised. Expected this to be cheesy 80s schlock and it wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong. It was 80s sounds, but not total cheese. I’m the right setting this is a really good listen.
Tina!! Una artista de lujo, excelente album
Fuck it. Five stars. Masterpiece. Powerhouse.
Tina Turner is a great artist with such unique voice!
My apologies Tina, I was not familiar with your game. I’m a slag for a poorly produced 80s Disco album. Best song: Let’s stay together Worst song: 1984
Not many examples of rock and soul being fused so seamlessly, and the special sauce of course is Turner's truly one of a kind vocals. Pop masterpiece.
Such an amazing album. Theres all kinds of history and reasons why this is an incredibly empowering album and a triumph for an artist as well, but the short version is that its just a fantastic album. 5/5
Даёт жизни
Вышка
sexy & styley
That was a pleasant surprise. Even the singles sounded better, not as produced. That cover of 1984 was excellent, paying homage to Bowie's version by going a little further than he did.
This is a masterpiece. Tina Turner reigns supreme. I am in awe.
Simply the best! Oh wait, that’s a different album. But still…
A spectacular album that hits me right in the nostalgia bone.
In late 1984 on a long school trip I forgot to pack any extra cassettes for my Walkman knock-off. At a truck stop I perused the limited selection and saw a single copy of this album. On impulse I bought PRIVATE DANCER despite knowing very little about Tina Turner. This was not something I would have ever imagined adding my my collection. By the end of side one, the universe had assigned me my diva and I had met the musical love of my life. PRIVATE DANCER overflows with fire and passion. Every song on this album is a monster. The cover songs feel like completely new tracks as Tina works them into her style. The polished 80s production serves to highlight Tina’s raw, primal energy that still makes me stop what I’m doing to listen. PRIVATE DANCER is my musical cornerstone and likely the greatest album I will ever hear.
Wow. Full of hits on this and the sound was sometimes SO 1984 that it was wild. I loved this album and the covers were all great.
Fun album
Great 80’s pop production
Good ol' Tina Turner :)
Proud Mary will come some day
It's always amazing to hear Tina sing. What a legend. It's also always shocking to hear how much 'What's Love Got To Do With It' is an abuse song. 1984 really hits home about how not much has changed for being black in America. Sigh. Not sure if you all listened to the remastered version, but it includes a version of the Beatles 'Help' and a duet with David Bowie that are just beautiful.
Pop-infused R&B with the likes of record powerhouse 'What's Love Got to Do with It', 'Private Dancer' (album) is soulful, profound, and tasteful. Tina Turner's commendable vocals is full-bodied and flavorful, geared for many genres - the uptempo rock records are upheld by Turner's stamina, while the smooth jazz and ballads retain her radiance. Casual listening promises an extremely effortless and gratifying listen; critical listening reveals a guaranteed above-average production and delivery.
Goddamn.
Yes.
This album is pure energy in your ears for an all too short 50 minutes. Turner brings everything to a series of upbeat jams that are absolutely electric. Powerhouse ballad after powerhouse ballad. Her cover of Bowie's 1984 might... even... be better than Bowie's? That might be sacrilege but that's what I'm feeling right now. Days like this are when I am SO happy I found this website, and SO happy I have discovered so many all time great works of art.
proper boss mix of disco, soul, funk and rock. top album
Cat
I forgot how much I like Tina’s voice. I wouldn’t skip any song on this album with the exception of 1984, which just made me laugh with how 80s it was (so maybe I wouldn’t skip that one either).
She's incredible. Awesome songs, great Marvin cover!
Mama’s favorietje
An incredible album by an incredible woman! A perfect first challenge choice!
Every one of these songs are incredible!
Wasn’t in the mood, still great though
Numerous great songs and even the ones I didn't love were still good! No bad songs.
Classic Janet
9/10. A couple of really good songs, and some other pretty good ones. My one complaint is that I really would have like "I Can't Stand the Rain" way more were it not for the weird sounds that reminded me of the Ghostbusters theme and really killed the mood.
Repetido
LOVED IT back in the day and today. < > Not the best running music though ;-)
Good ol Tina Turner stuff to get the body moving
A fantastic pop album that stands to this day with career defining songs from her well known comeback.
Greath
Great classic album
I always miss my Dad when I hear this album. The transformative power of music.
Nice.
Yeah love Tina. No nonsense powerful vocals
Thursday, 10 July, 2026 Tina! Nails it. What a performance. Great album. Solid hits, and some deep cuts. Can’t stand the rain is my favorite.
Starts with a punch, loses a bit of steam then finishes with a brilliant Bowie cover. Fantastic album.
It’s a little bit hard to rate due to the music is so very 80’s generated, and I don’t think it holds up that good today. At the same time Tina Turner’s voice is great and the album is full of classic hits with good song writing. I enjoyed the listening experience, but I don’t blame them who don’t like the generic composition. Favourites: What’s Love Got To With It, I Can’t Stand The Rain, Let’s Stay Together Least favourite: Help
Good stuff
The album cover is bizarre but the music is great.
There's a black cat on the album cover! This was so much fun!
Favorite track: Better Be Good To Me Perfect music for a sweaty summer day. Tons of energy. I had the feeling while listening that, like, Tina had my back. This rocks.
Excellent
I really like Tina Turner’s sound, and this is quintessential Tina. It’s pop music with an idiosyncratic 80s essence that only she could bring. It’s refreshing in a sea of British-fronted rock albums. Not a five for me, but solidly in the four camp. STAND-OUT SONG: “What’s Love Got To Do With It” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Private Dancer”, “Steel Claw”
STRONG 4. She has such a beautiful voice and I feel like she never goes too crazy or over the top here. I think the 80s accompaniment actually plays to her strengths. Other than what I feel are two ill advised covers, I enjoyed basically every part of this album. Shame I didn't know it sooner!
NEED TO RETURN TO THIIS
On the weekend I wanted to listen to something and remembered about this lovely activity. 😊 And this album was this weekend's album, so it was a blast! Was vibing with it while making cold beetroot soup. 🥒🥚😁
Yesss!!! Would give this a 5 if it was a bit shorter. Other than that, great album.
One of Tina's best records with a nice mix of originals and covers. A few songs charted high on the single lists.
Even if this was just What’s Love Fot To Do With It and 9 other tracks of fart noises, it would still be a stone cold hit. And it ain’t. Great weird covers and all
The best album of Tina Turner's career. Just banger after banger. The album that really entered the public discourse about power dynamics and domestic violence in relationships. It really wasn't much of a discussion before this album. Favorites: "What's Love Got to Do with It", "I Can't Stand the Rain", "Private Dancer", "Better Be Good To Me" and the cover of David Bowie's "1984". The list finally got one of the 80s album selections right. Finally some proper 80s saxophone and synths.
The production couldn't be more 1984 if it tried. Gated reverb, processed drums, synths doing things that felt futuristic and now feel like a time capsule — Private Dancer is so aggressively of its moment that resisting it is almost beside the point. You either ride the flashback or you don't, and it turns out the answer here is yes, buckle in. What makes this a four rather than a three is Tina Turner's voice, which operates at a level the production doesn't always deserve. There's a consistent gap between what she's bringing and what the songs are asking of her, and instead of that mismatch being a problem it becomes the record's defining tension. She's so clearly operating above the material that the schmaltz gets burned off somewhere in the upper register. "What's Love Got to Do with It" is a five-star single in any era, any production context — the melody holds up completely independent of the 80s clothes it's wearing, which is the real test. "Better Be Good to Me" has the same quality. Strip the reverb out and put a Hammond and a horn section underneath that vocal and you'd have something Jimmy Smith would have recognized. The covers are a particular pleasure. Tina doesn't execute other people's songs — she inhabits them, which is a meaningful distinction in a decade that produced a lot of well-produced karaoke. A 4 that earns it through voice and nostalgia in roughly equal measure, with the record player test delivering the verdict cleanly: this is a record you cue up and tell people to buckle in for. That's not respect. That's enthusiasm.
Great voice, the production is typical 80's rnb pop mixing in the occasional influence from other genres. Does writing an album about having raised your standards in love after a bad marriage count as a concept album? Either way, a solid reference for its time.
This is a really awesome, very over the top, kind of a hot mess kind of record. And all of those reasons make it wonderful. I love the covers (Help, I Can't Stand Rain) and I love that she just totally makes them her own. I love that she is Queen of Rock and Roll and just totally embraces 80s sludge. Its like Prince, Aerosmith and Poison all in one all under the guise of one of the greatest early rock stars of her generation. The guitars, the vocals, the lyrics. Its all fantastic. I had a blast with this.
Right, nowhere near my musical interests, expected to not like this, by track two I was completely into it and it was a solid album! Not once was I seeing how long it had, just a fun listen and a good surprise. :)
Wow. I wasn’t into all of this (private dancer did not need to be 7 minutes long imo, some of the instrumentals don’t hold up for me, maybe that’s not the right way to word it they’re just very of their time to an extent that is almost distracting for me lol) but god damn Tina Turner is fucking incredible. Better Be Good To Me and Let’s Stay Together blew me away
Great songs dotted throughout with such a unique voice, absolutely loving this! This album feels brimming with emotion and narrative.
Tina Turner was a power house. This album is surprisingly consistent. Like most pop that came out when I was a kid, I completely rejected Tina by the time I was a young teen. As kids, my brother and I thought her role in the Mad Max sequel was a highlight the way Bowie’s role in Never Ending Story was. And that was about as far Tina got with me. Bowie of course can’t be avoided, but that is a different story for a different time. Anyway, glad to hear this album. 4 Boolean:yes
VERYYY 80S.
Genuinely so good, her voice amazes me
My dad’s favourite.
When people say “that sounds like the ‘80s”, that covers a wide range of quality from bad to good. To me this album sounds like the ‘80s in a very good way. Although this album has a couple of meh songs. It took me longer than I care to admit for me to realize that is a cat on the album cover and not boots or shoes. How have I not heard this Beatles cover before? About 20 years ago I went through a phase of Beatles covers and I would have gobbled this one up if I knew about it.
Another great one, sometimes the production sounds a little dated and cheesyz’
WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT 🗣🗣🗣
A hefty slab of 80s rock n' soul! Slightly dated sound, but who doesn't love a bit of Tina?!
No esta nada mal.
Tina Turner obviously belongs on a list like this, and *Private Dancer* is her most important album. Alongside the title track, “What’s Love Got To Do With It” is the standout track—even my autocorrect seems to know this song. It’s not exactly my cup of tea, but it’s definitely a must-have.
Tina Turner is classic. This album is well worth your time.
Te amo Tina Turner estuvo super divertido
Great solo debut from Tina. Side A is stacked, all songs good, a few got radio play. Side B not as strong, but holds up OK and is carried by Private Dancer which got heavy play through the 80s and 90s. The album also got some heavy play during (and brought back some memories of) the Haverhill years. L = (4.3*s) Love me some Tina. J = (4.2*s) Private Dancer was the launch pad for Tina’s solo career. I didn’t realize until recently that she has Mark Knopfler to thank for that.
Went with the international release of Private Dancer (since the list author is British) which includes the extra cover track of "Help." Should have left it off...brings the rating down. An Al Green cover on this as well, which I don't prefer from an album purest standpoint but it's better than the Lennon cover. The record is still loaded with top Tina tracks. Even though she hated "What's Love," it's her best song. "1984" is the most poppy, synth track and sounds like it borrowed a bit from "No Time" by The Guess Who. Amazing to find out the title track was written by Mark Knopfler and features a guitar solo by Jeff Beck. The covers and "Steel Claw" are weakest links and bring it down but overall, a great debut for Turner's solo start. This was a staple on the CD shuffle for openmindz and it's worthy of the vinyl pickup. Six out of 10 tracks are strong enough to get this one a 3.86 star rating.
You know who’s awesome? Tina Turner.
This stays pretty strong until the last couple of tracks. Good stuff.
Tina Turner is a legend in my country, largely in part to a dance associated with nutbush city limits, and the use of “The Best” to promote rugby league in the 90’s. This album bought back memories of being a kid and my mum blasting this every Saturday morning while doing housework. She’s got one hell of a voice and the songs are catchy, maybe in part to the way each song builds tension and hits the crescendo at the chorus. Although formulaic, I’d take this style of pop music any day compared to the absolute dog shit pop music created these days. Despite the above, it’s not my style of music but I can appreciate it, and respect Tina’s legacy
Good album, classic song from a classic lady
A lot of hits on this record for sure Pleasantly pleasantly surprised for this album definitely will return and shocking enough. I really liked a long song private dancer, the title track seven minutes long and I enjoyed it.
Private Dancer and What’s Love Got To Do With It are the best songs. Tina’s voice is amazing, and if you like 1980s production (which I get is polarizing, but I lived through it and have nostalgia for) then this is a banger. 4⭐️
Rock, 1984 -> 4
Better Be Good to Me is one of my favorite 80's tunes. And so many of the songs on this album that aren't hits have that unmistakable cheesy 80's soundtrack sound that I can't help but love, being a child of the 80's. RIP Tina. 4.75
Queen shit
She had some really fucking cool songs did Tina. Not fully my thing but did enjoy this, such a mishmash of different styles coming together. Real kitchen sink pop. And Tina is quite a cool front to it all. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: Ball Of Confusion (Shoutout to Sister Act 2)
Some big bangers on here, some less big bangers as well. What a voice, what a woman
I was already familiar with Tina Turner and many of the tracks on this album. It's a very good album. It showcases her great vocals, and the songwriting and instrumentation are top-notch. I would listen to this album again for sure.
An old favorite from a legend.
Tina Turner gives all the sensuality combined with the maturity of a woman in the complex tangles of love
If you like it nice....and rough, you'll like this album.
Yeah she’s a powerhouse. Legend. This is super poppy - not like her early stuff but hey it was the time. This was huge back in the day. I liked it for the most part. I’ll even give it 4 stars.
4/5
tina turner out of all artists to listen to. i'm honestly a little surprised. compared to all the other albums, this one is just straight pop... tina turner is hailed as the queen of rock and roll, but a lot of her discography sounds like dance pop. it's a pretty alright album! i mean there's really only so much i can realistically say about these 80s pop tunes. all i know is that these songs will make you want to move your feet, and miss turner exerts her mind, body and SOUL when she sings. she's full of personality and it really oozes out from the speakers. hope you don't mind the dx7, chorused guitars and tinny drum machines.
Day803 - what’s love got to do with it was my first introduction to tina turner on mtv. this isn’t my favorite album of hers but she’s such an icon. her cover of i can’t stand the rain is one of my favorite version of that song
Amazing dance pop some original some from other artists nevertheless great overall
Good 80s stuff. I don't know why everybody is complaining. I had a fun time, the Beatles cover was a bit meh though
Vibeeeee she is a queen
fun vibes
I didn't think I would enjoy it that much. Very 80s but fucking fun
> the Beatles
Queen.
Incredible voice, incredibly 80's especially 1984
Turner delivers outstanding performance after outstanding performance
Probably the only artist who gives Aretha Franklin a challenge for the title of Greatest Female Rock Performer of all time. Even beyond the vocal performances, she has all of those moves that she taught to Jagger. Watch videos or live performances of these songs when possible to get the full effect!
This was less good than I'd hoped. It's difficult to hear this great voice and not think about where the US music industry was at when this album was released. On the one hand it's good that a black female artist could become a global superstar but on the other hand I can't help associating this music with the era that has very efficiently commodified talent based on massive sales, sell out stadium tours, image control, etc.... Just can't hear her voice without thinking about all that stuff.
Album of bangers… Tina’s voice is something else, the music doesn’t live up to her vocie I get that. But it’s all about her. Isn’t that the point? Great listen. Great song list. Can’t really knock it. Great for a one off listen.
Some great rocking tunes on this ! I mean cmon it’s Tina Turner an icon , I remember some of these tunes from old Videos my parents used to tape the series The young ones , and had what’s love got to do with it on top of the pops with the music video on such n iconic video ! so grew up listening to some of her classics on this What’s love got to do with it is a great arrangement liked the little synth lines and the builds are great, she’s got so much power yet so much soul to her voice Private dancer is a staple Tina turner track you always seem to hear this track to this day , very sleazy , sort of sets the scene in the lyrics takes a while to build , looked up and Jeff beck got hired to play the solo on this and when I listen to it it’s signature beck , heard he got roped in off a helicopter , straight into studio because he’s Jeff Beck Better be good to me I loved just a hooky feel good pop song The covers on this record Help , and the al Green classic let’s stay together we’re so well arranged and beautifully sung she put an amazing spin on the phrasing of the words All in all great album It oozes the 80s it’s a strong vocal on every track Tina seems to really draw you in on every song the musicians are tight some really good writers and song tempo changes , loved the synths and the little swells and instrumental breaks 4 all the way
The Al Green and Ann Peebles covers are not bad. What's Love Got To Do With It and Private Dancer were probably the big hits from this album, but Better Be Good To Me is the one that stood out for me. Pretty good album. +1 for her just being a f'ing survivor after what Ike put her through.
Not gonna lie, I had fun listening to this. Stand-outs - I Might Have Been Queen - Show Some Respect - When I Was Young
The production is a bit 80s-tastic, but “Let’s Stay Tigether” heals all wounds.
Tina’s talent shines through here on an album that contains a few bangers. A few signs of the 80s era not aging brilliantly but overall a good listen
Short & sweet
About what I expected
This was very good. I especially like the covers on the extended edition version I listened too. Very different takes on some songs. The beatles song I almost didnt even realize was a beatles song at first.
Extremely 80s sound, but boy does Tina have a great voice and such presence!
Noice
Once Tina sings a song it's her song
7/10 – Good
What’s love go to do with it 😍
Lots and lots of fun! Bangers galore and Tina Turner is just such a charismatic vocalist - a lil bit unhinged sometimes but in the best way. mid-80s pop is probably the best pop and that's proved here. A feeeew too many weird filler covers in here for it to be a true classic but a very enjoyable one nonetheless
Always loved Mrs. Turner since I was a kid, loved having a reason to listen to this album fully! It’s such a good groovy, funky album, pretty much every song is a bop!
Enjoyed listening to this! Her powerful voice is iconic.
Hit na hit na hit na hit na hit. Vet
bardzo fajnyyy:3
After 3 days of soulf from 70's finally something I can actually listen to
Enjoyable listen
This was actually a banger. Yet another artist I've needed to listen to. Even though the album was long, I didn't really mind the extra versions of songs since they kept things fresh.
What’s Love Got To Do With It is of course iconic and a great song (though I think it would have probably sounded better with a sax solo instead of the harmonica synth). The rest of the album is pretty solid, though there’s nothing close to as catchy as the lead single, and some of it’s a bit cheesy and dated, especially all of the synths and drum machines. But she’s a good enough singer to breathe life into the most mediocre sings, so the album is still worth a listen the whole way through. 3.5/5, rounding up.
Funky, powerful, popy..is what's love one of the best songs ever written, of course! Some feel a bit drawn out, the title track as the perfect example. But the sould of tina doesnt get better.
Solid 80s bangers
4.2/5 Stars Top Songs: What's Love Got To Do With It, I Can't Stand the Rain, Steel Claw
Tuna Turner you fishy little beauty. I really enjoyed this a lot for what is, at heart, a polished dance pop record. The big hits - especially the title track and What's Love Got To Do With It - absolutely bop, and she has a marvellous voice. The covers were pretty nice too, or at least Let's Stay Together was. Her version of Help (possibly not on the original record) is a pretty paint by numbers affair. Anyway, well done Tina, you duck-walking wonder.
3.5
I’ve always felt quite ambivalent about Tina Turner. I know she’s a huge star, but the only song I could think of that she’d done was “The Best.” I was proven wrong when I listened to this album. The album starts off quite strong with “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” It’s a great song that shows her range, and while the beat is laid back, it really packs a punch. Then there’s the iconic cover of “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” I’m not sure it’s my favourite version of the song, but the main riff really grabs you compared to the original. I also have to admit that the version I’ve heard the most is the sample in Missy Elliott’s “The Rain.” Then there’s maybe my favourite song on the album, “Private Dancer.” It might be a tad long, but I still really enjoyed it. Sadly, I thought the covers on the latter half of the record were subpar. “Let’s Stay Together” felt like a strictly worse version of the song by Al Green. “Help!” was the same story, but I can respect the attempt. Overall: good vocals, quite a few strong singles, and a few subpar covers. 4 stars from me — a good album!
my parents loved her, i see why. funky groovy and she bad
