Reviews (page 3 of 9)

NOTE: Only listened to tracks from the original edition. Queen of Rock N' Roll. Think this was one of the few Rock N' Roll albums I enjoyed. Even though all the songs were solid I saved: - Show some respect - Let's stay together - Private dancer - 1984

Tina is always a mood!

Fun listen some songs too repetitive

Oh yeah! Tina! So 80s but in a good way. And the power of the voice. Yes the production creaks a bit these days but couldn't you just listen to her sing all day long?

Private Dancer was quite the enjoyable album. I am pretty familiar with a fair bit of Tina Turner's discography with seeing Proud Mary in Just Dance 2 and also hearing an additional five songs from her from using Spotify's AI DJ feature a bit after she had died but i don't think any of those songs from what i remember were from this album. It is a shame since this album is a really good one. It is a very 80s album (which makes sense, its from 1984 after all) with a lot of that 80s bass, synths galore but Tina's voice did give it some uniqueness. A few of the songs were pretty unmemorable but overall, I really enjoyed this album. Best Song: 1984 Worst Song: Better Be Good To Me

Patrząc na to co dostaje od pewnego czasu na tej stronie daje większą ocenie Tinie. Może nie jest to muzyka, do której często wracam, to zostawiła mnie z dużo przyjemniejszym uczuciem, niż reszta płyt

Great album, Tina wiped the floor with this one. Would have been a straight 5 but the Beatles and Bowie covers smack a little of lack of confidence. Saying that I prefer Tinas version of help

Iconic. Ich glaube I can’t stand the rain ist einer meiner Top Songs ever

Goosebumps

Classic 80's

**Tina Turner – *Private Dancer* (1984)** _In-depth review: lyrics, music, production, themes & influence_ --- ### **1. Context & Legacy** Released in May 1984, *Private Dancer* was Turner’s **comeback-solo breakthrough** after years of Ike & Tina baggage and industry neglect. - **Global sales**: 12 million+ - **Grammys**: 3 wins (Record, Song, Female Pop Vocal for “What’s Love Got to Do with It”) - **Influence**: Re-defined how a 44-year-old Black woman could re-enter the MTV-era pop market and become a stadium rocker. It set the template for later “legacy” comebacks (Cher, Bonnie Raitt, Santana) and proved that **vocal authority + smart A&R + modern production** could trump youth marketing. --- ### **2. Lyric Landscape** Turner is **not** the principal writer; the album is a **curated set** from British & American songwriters. Lyrics therefore **mirror** rather than **chronicle** her life, but the **song-selection** is autobiographical in spirit: | Track | Core Theme | Lyrical Angle | |---|---|---| | **What’s Love Got to Do with It** | Cynical romantic detachment | “Second-hand emotion” – distrust as survival mechanism after abusive past. | | **Private Dancer** | Sex-work metaphor for showbiz | Mark Knopfler’s words become a **meta-commentary** on Turner’s own commodification; the stripper is also the performer who’s “dancing for the money.” | | **Better Be Good to Me** | Defiant ultimatum | Anthem of **new boundaries**—directly read as Turner’s post-Ike manifesto. | | **I Might Have Been Queen** | Mythic self-empowerment | Rewrites the “tragic woman” trope into **urban-fantasy royalty**—a sonic coronation. | | **Steel Claw** | Class & gender warfare | Lines like “It’s a rich man’s world, you’re a poor man’s wife” give the record **societal bite** often missed amid the pop sheen. | **Weak spot**: The Beatles cover **“Help”** is re-harmonised into a soul ballad, but the lyric’s youthful panic feels **misaligned** with Turner’s worldly timbre. --- ### **3. Music & Arrangements** Genre **mosaic**: new-wave synth-pop, reggae-tinged pop, Memphis soul covers, AOR rock, proto-power-ballad. | Song | Musical Signature | Notable Players | |---|---|---| | **Let’s Stay Together** | Heaven 17-style Linn-Drum & synth-bass, 10-second **vocal sustain** that became a sampler classic. | Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh | | **What’s Love…** | Off-beat **electric piano** hook + talk-box guitar = perfect MTV ear-candy. | Terry Britten (gtr/producer) | | **Private Dancer** | Dire Straits chemistry: **Jeff Beck**’s “2nd-ugliest guitar solo” (Knopfler’s words) adds **blues ache** to the glossy bed. | Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler | | **Steel Claw** | **Hi-NRG rock**; 8th-note hi-hat & power-chords pre-date Heart’s 80s phase. | | | **I Can’t Stand the Rain** | **Simulated rain-drop synth**, gated snare & sax = textbook 80s excess, but Turner’s **grit** keeps it earthy. | **Pros**: - Each track tailored to **her rasp-to-velvet range**; producers **leave space** for ad-libs (the “Yeah-yeah!” in “Better Be Good to Me” still raises neck-hair). - **Live drum & guitar overdubs** on top of drum-machines prevent the dated “all-synth” curse. **Cons**: - **Period-specific drums**—gated reverb & Linn crashes—can feel **cartoonish** to post-90s ears. - **Key-choice fatigue**: many songs sit in **A-flat/E-flat**, optimised for radio but blurring individuality when heard back-to-back. --- ### **4. Production Architecture** **Multi-producer strategy** (unusual in 1984): - Capitol farmed tracks to **five different teams** so Turner could **pick winners**. - Result: **no sonic cohesion**, yet **every song is single-ready**—a **mixtape approach** that foreshadows modern play-list culture. | Producer(s) | Signature | Tracks | |---|---|---| | **Terry Britten** | Tight, radio-rock | “What’s Love…”, “Better Be Good to Me” | | **Rupert Hine** | Atmospheric, synth-layered | “I Might Have Been Queen” | | **Martyn Ware** (Heaven 17) | Brit-soul electro | “Let’s Stay Together”, “1984” | | **Mark Knopfler** | Live-band blues | “Private Dancer” | | **Bob Clearmountain** (mix) | Glossy, punchy drums | most tracks | **Studio lore**: Turner cut **lead vocals in one-or-two takes** to preserve rasp; **no Auto-Tune** (didn’t exist) → slight imperfections (e.g., flat tail on “Help” bridge) left in, adding humanity. --- ### **5. Thematic Cohesion** Despite the **patch-work** origins, a **narrative arc** emerges: 1. **Survivor intro** (“I Might Have Been Queen”) 2. **Cynical heart** (“What’s Love…”) 3. **Demand for respect** (“Show Some Respect”, “Better Be Good to Me”) 4. **Vulnerability & commodification** (“Private Dancer”) 5. **Rain/cleansing metaphor** (“I Can’t Stand the Rain”) 6. **Closing uplift** (“Keep Me Hanging On” – bonus track on CD) Thus the album quietly **mirrors** Turner’s **emancipation timeline** without needing confessional songwriting. --- ### **6. Influence & Afterlife** - **Vocal blueprint**: Beyoncé, Pink, Janelle Monáe cite Turner’s **raspy-yet-precision** delivery on this record as **the** reference for **power-pop-soul**. - **Visual template**: The **spiked wigs**, leather-minis and **stocking-belt combo** debuted here → still copied by arena-divas. - **Sample fodder**: – “I Can’t Stand the Rain” → Missy Elliott’s **“Beep Me 911”** (1997). – Drum intro of “Let’s Stay Together” → **“Straight Outta Compton”** (1988) interpolation. - **Catalogue uplift**: Turners’ 1988/93 tours used **Private Dancer** songs as **cornerstones**, cementing her as **stadium-level** rather than oldies act. --- ### **7. Pros & Cons at a Glance** | Pros | Cons | |---|---| | Turner’s **vocal authority** elevates every cut—sells even the schmaltz. | **Heavy reliance on covers** → less personal songwriting perspective. | | **Song-by-song excellence**; 5 enduring hits out of 10 tracks. | **80s production tropes** (gated snare, DX7 e-piano) date several cuts. | | **Multi-genre showcase** proves versatility and sets template for later diva comebacks. | **Flow disrupted** by stark style shifts (reggae-pop to synth-rock to blues ballad). | | **Lyric themes of autonomy** resonate as proto-feminist anthems. | **“1984”** and **“Help”** are divisive; some listeners find them forced or melodramatic. | | **Guitar cameos** (Beck, Knopfler) add organic credibility. | **CD reissues** pad runtime with weaker B-sides, diluting the tight 40-min original. | --- ### **Verdict** *Private Dancer* is **not** a flawless **album-statement**, but it is a **perfect pop artifact**: a survival story told through **other people’s songs**, **cutting-edge 80s craft**, and **one irrepressible voice**. Its **influence** lies less in sonic innovation than in **business-model & persona reboot**: prove you can **own the moment**, age be damned. Four decades on, the **best moments** still crackle with **steel-claw charisma**; the filler merely reminds you how high the bar was set.

There are cool songs but the album feels too long. 3,75/5.

Classic Tina bonus points for Bowie cover

Never listened to Tina Turner, but man she sounds great!! Liked quite a few songs off this album, will have to checkout more of her stuff

I mean, what do you want me to say? It’s Tina Turner. This is amazing. Of course it is. 4.5 stars easy.

Nice song selection and fun 80's sax stylings. Better Be Good To Me is my favorite track, and the entire album is about half great songs and half not so great, either not a good cover or not really a great song to start with or I just don't like it.

Way too long, but has a few classics

Undervurdert 80-tallsrock, svært god coverversjon av Help.

Bumping to 4 because of Dad :) he enjoyed Tina and Private Dancer specifically.

What a great album! Yeah it’s pop, but it’s in the same way that “Thriller” is pop. It’s got a groove, some funk, it’s dance-y. And the songwriting is on point. 1984 is one of my favorite tracks. I love a good pop record when it’s done well, and this certainly is.

Very uneven. weird covers that don't come close to improving on the originals, but the songs that were hits still stand up as great

Ja is gewoon echt goed, lekker hits van paps en mams, maar nee het pakt me niet echt

Not a fan of TT, but found this better than I expected. She was a prominent woman in rock and roll and this album shows us why. Her powerful voice and catchy hooks are enjoyable and familiar. I couldn't help sing along with the ones I already knew. Can't say I'd listen again, but credit where credit is due and all that. Besides, it's better than some of the other stuff we have to endure on the list.

Tina Turner's strong performance really makes this album something special. There are a few weak tracks in my opinion, but the big hits from "Private Dancer" still hold up well. Favorite track: "What's Love Got To Do With It"

The 80s production got tedious online Tina though

The album is amazing, never thought I’d enjoy the album as much as I did. Tina’s voice is sublime, her covers of Let’s Stay Together and Help! are some of the best I’ve ever heard. Plus the album had hits like Better Be Good To Me and What’s Love Got To Do With It that I already knew. I’m glad I listened to it

Banger city, population Tina Turner

okay werqqqq

I'm mostly familiar with Tina Turner's voice from her many live recordings; she's my partner's favorite singer. However I was not prepared for the variety of songs and production styles on this thrilling album. I assumed it would be heavily front loaded and all synth pop. Wrong on both counts. This is a rock album all the way, decorated to varying degrees with love- it-or-loathe it 80s synth textures. And it's a rock album with depth where Tina never fails to bring the fire song after song after song. "I Can't Stand The Rain" is now one of my favorite songs of any decade, "1984" is simultaneously ridiculous and ominous, "Better Be Good To Me" rocked my socks off, "Help" and "When I Was Young" transformed my understanding of those songs. Even the bonus tracks on the anniversary reissue were exciting. I'm officially a convert. (Note on the 1001 Albums list - I was beginning to worry there was some sort of ban on female artists...)

Tina sounds so confident here; her soulful vocals pair well with 80s pop rock (3.5-4).

9/10 queen tina, avant garde ma vie

Probably Tina’s best album, love lots of songs on this. Feels like a little time capsule of 80s music and style. A few covers that I prefer the originals of in here, but can’t deny the classics on this album. She will always be a legend and a queen.

Je me rappelle avoir ecoute cet album en entier quand on a annoncé à la radio le décès de Tina Turner. Son biopic m’avait egalement beaucoup touchée. Cet album est grandiose, mon top fav avec Acid Queen!

Alright everyone, get your oversized cans of hairspray ready, cause we’re going back to the 80s!(insert Bill and Ted guitar riff). And what better way to do that than with one of the most prominent ladies of the 80s then Tina Turner. I actually quite liked this album for a couple reasons. First off, it had the energy that I’m always looking for in 80s pop albums, which Tina delivers with her combination of pop, funk, and R&B. The album has a bit of an edge, with songs like I Might Have Been Queen and Show Some Respect allowing Tina to assert her dominance. The album definitely has one major boon over another 80s album that I’ve reviewed, Dare by The Human League, on that case, the music felt more hollow as none of the songs felt like they had distinct personalities, while this album, each song felt like a showcase of Tina’s style. The one flaw of this album is the stretch of Better Be Good To Me and Let’s Stay Together. Both of these songs sound too similar and they did not need to be a combined 10 minutes of the albums total runtime. But, aside from those two songs, the rest of the album captured perfectly why Tina Turner was a force to be reckoned with in the 80s. Now, I’m gonna dance my way on to my next album.

How have I missed this queen! I enjoyed this album lots, and the 80s vibe. I jammed more to the first half of the album, rather than the second. Of course I knew of "What's love got to do with it", and still it's the catchiest song to me.

Tina Turner's singing is absolutely breathtaking

this album is so good i miss u tina

This album is hella long, but I enjoy the pop music. I’m not going to listen to the live version or the extended versions. The ones from the original are what I’m gonna listen to. Enjoying it much more than I thought. Overall very fun and I liked a lot. Faves: might’ve been a queen, what’s love got to do with it Least faves: private dancer, help

I love Tina’s voice. I just wished I loved more of the songs on this album, but for the most part I can live without pop.

Very 80's sounding synths. I love Tina, but her vocals can be a bit screechy at times. Sort of an uneven album, in terms of song quality. 3.5*, but rounding up for Better Be Good To Me, which is a banger.

Southern funk

Very good! Groovy !!

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did.

Banger. Love her.

The album with "What's Love Got to Do With It!" I love this album. I liked the covers but prefer any original tracks.

Really solid album, thoroughly enjoy this. One of the best of the 80s it feels, impressive for both covers and original songs. A strong 4 star album

A big 80's album in all respects, this one exhibits the best and worst of the era. There are some great songs on here and the standouts are "Whats Love Got to Do With It?," the Mark Knopfler penned "Private Dancer," and "Better Be Good to Me." But, holy crap, that 80's production has not aged well. Tina's voice and swagger overcome it. I was surprised by the covers of "Help!" and "1984," didn't know those were on here. They're both interesting and different. I should have had this album in the cassette collection I had at that time.

Some very silly 80s production choices on some tracks not withstanding, this is a great album. Turner's powerhouse vocals carry it, and she puts on a compelling performance on every song. Loved I Cant Stand the Rain, the title track, and the rockin Steel Claw especially. Really unique cover of Help! too. She was a legend

Great apart from veering into smooth jazz occasionally

Или добро или нищо

Fantastic album.

125/1089 This is a pretty solid album. Very 80s and a dated but i think it airs just on the good side of dated/nostalgic. she has such a strong presence and it’s an enjoyable project that doesn’t feel it’s length. faves: When I Was Young, Steel Claw, I Can’t Stand The Rain, Private Dancer, What’s Love Got To Do With It 70/100

11/18/25. Love the energy on this! Tina deserves more attention in the rock world than she already has, beyond "What's Love" there's some great songs on this, I particularly enjoyed the title track. Will need to dive into more of her work, R.I.P. Tina.

Such a strong voice from TT. Great performance!

I love Tina Turner. This album has great tunes, great voice, great power. I don't get the hate.

Liked this more than I expected

Neponovljiva kraljica, bez loše pjesme na albumu.

Fan of the hits - also really dig Steel Claw and her cover of Let’s Stay Together.

Every song a hit! This is Tina at her finest.

Tina Turner is somehow special. What I mean is that while her genre is soft rock/ pop, a massively populated genre with tons of talented acts already in it, she still manages to be her own thing. Her strong voice and meaningful lyrics help her catchy memorably riffs. It could be commercial if taken the wrong way but it is doubtful that anyone would interpret her that way. It feels real and she has a real passion. Also I might note that while this is smack dab in the mid-80's it is truly and fully timeless. That in-itself is pretty darn rare for a pop album!

It's very slick and 80s but Tina's soul shines through. Another nostalgic album for me as it was in regular rotation in my dad's car cassette player in the mid 80s.

Banger. Tína er banger. Hægt að dilla sér við þessa.

What a great voice - the power, the rasp. Of the songs that are "What's Love Got to Do with It", my favorites were the opener and Private Dancer.

An icon who resurrected her career with this album and actually I really liked it. It's super 80s in production but for me that's not such a bad thing at all. Her voice is a weapon - the rasp, the grit, all of it. When she goes up the octave on the title track (which I learned was written by Mark Knopfler?!) it's quite something. Steel Claw I had never heard before but rips pretty hard. Some great covers, I think Can't Stand the Rain is the best but also a unique take on Help! Would listen to again for sure.

This is a fun album.

Great album, Tina is a legend! 7.3/10

From the very first note, this album is aged for a specific place and time. Pure 80s bass, guitar, and drums greet you before the iconic voice of Tina Turner welcomes you with open arms. Her talent cannot be denied, and a couple of the entries in this have (and will most likely continue) to stand the test of time. The songs tell the story of triumph and failure, of finding your strength as a woman and trying to maintain your vulnerability as a person. It’s a well paced album for its time, giving us ups and downs throughout. Sure, it sounds dated, but that is definitely part of its charm.

Tina’s got bops. Tina’s got pipes! This was a lot of fun. Better than I expected. Though I’m a little more forgiving on big 80s pop than a lot of the nerds on this site lol. Must listen #236

Classic album

Legend

A really good album from a great artist. I liked What's Love Got To Do With It, Show Some Respect, Better Be Good To Me and When I was Young the most.

I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did. It was genuinely good.

Tina was a great vocalist, wish that Capital would have highlighted a bit of her songwriting as well.

Kovaa musaa, ja erinomaisen hyvin tuotettu levy.

Enjoyable!

Another fun discovery from the project. I had never listened to this and enjoyed the many covers, along with finding out the creation story of "Private Dancer". I did find myself wishing for at least one more uptempo song in here but I enjoyed her vocals and all the production quite a lot.

It sounds like what i imagine the entirety of the 1980s sounded like

this wound up being a pretty fun album!! i wasn't so sure at first because i started listening to it in my car on my way to work and i guess whatever audio qualities my car's speakers have make initial listen-throughs sound like doo doo. glad i sat down for another listen through this evening: i'm not familiar with tina turner but i love her voice and really liked the - albeit dated and a little cheesy, but still catchy as hell - 80s production soundscape. i really liked this album as a prismatic blend of mid-80s rock, pop, and r&b. great stuff!! highlights - what's love got to do with it, i can't stand the rain, private dancer, let's stay together, steel claw

This is a fantastic 80s pop album with quite a few absolute bangers on it. I also learned that “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was sampled by Missy Elliott and it wasn’t just her singing in “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” Best Track: What’s Love Got to Do With It

I really enjoyed this one. Steel Claw stole the show.

80s bangers

I feel like love is more of a primary emotion that rules them all. People do dumb shit for love, Tina. So I’m more in the Beatles camp on the love subject. This album is great though. Enjoyed listening to it this morning.

Très sympa, dynamique, des tubes connus

Plutôt sympa! Une bonne écoute, j'étais pas pressé que ça se termine. J'adore les ambiances pop/dance des années 80. 4/5

This album was part of my 80s childhood soundtrack, for sure. I can still pretty much sing along with every song, although I should probably let Tina take care of it.

4 - great album. Great powerful voice. Side b got a little slow for me

There are a few great songs here. Over all good music

Hats off for Tina. Great voice. 80s vibe but still classic Tina.

One of the greatest voices EVER manages to overcome frankly annoying dated (not in a good way) production. I never knew that she covered HELP by The Beatles as I had only heard the American edition of Private Dancer- it's a great five-star cover- I love it. A fun listen in spite of the production.

The hits on this album are capital shouty letters HITS. Tina Turner was one of a kind, may she RIP.

Rating: 7.5/10 The production is outdated, even though I quite like this sounds. Tina Tuner's voice is phenomenal, definitely carries this album.

I didn't know Tine Turner had a classic album full of bangers. Now I do.

Quintessential 80's. Synth, big hair, drugs, Bobbie Brown. Pretty sure this was played a lot at the roller rink. The extent of my knowledge is The Bodyguard, "Private Dancer" and Kevin Costner (which I've never seen) and the chorus to "What's Love Got to Do With It."

incredibly 80s but it was a fun album with good instrumentals and a fantastic vocal performance

Have never listened to Tina Turner other than the inescapable hits (of which a couple live on this album). I'm guessing when the editors put this in the list, they were referring to the original 9-track US release (maybe the 10-track international release that adds 'Help!'). I'm guessing they weren't referring to the 25-track 30th anniversary edition, nor the 5(!) disc 40th anniversary edition. So I feel like all judgement should be reserved for that original release. So with that context out of the way...I kind of think this is really great. Flavors of Fleetwood Mac and Prince. Hints of Disco and Yacht Rock. New-to-me faves are I Might Have Been Queen and Steel Claw.

It's really good.

This album turned out to be better than I thought it would be. Obviously it’s rooted in 80s pop and contemporary R&B, but it had a more innovative edge than I was expecting. It still has that polished, radio 80s sound, but there’s also a rawer side that adds texture, probably since some of the tracks featuring collaborations with members of Heaven 17. I also thought she did a decent cover of Bowie’s “1984,” especially since the album itself was released in 1984.

Very good, I love her voice and the different styles she has. The album starts strong and remains interesting throughout! Favourite Song: What's Love Got to Do with It Honourable Mention: Help (love her cover), 1984, Private Dancer

I didn't really know what else to expect besides the obvious songs by Tina Turner but wow I really liked this! Such energy and spirit that really embodied the time period.

She really brings it

This was actually much better than I expected. I'm not a huge Tina Turner fan, mainly because the sound of her voice kinda grates on me a bit, but the music on this album won me over in spite of that. Just about every song had a wonderful driving energy and smooth sound that really impressed me and made me happy. I still don't love Tina's voice, but I still enjoyed myself. Four stars.

Albumilla on useita hyviä biisejä. Sen sijaan What's Love Got to Do with It on oma lempparini.

My first time hearing anything by Tina Turner. A good collection of songs. Wasn't crazy about the title track.

as soon as I hear the opening notes to Whats Love Got To Do With It I always crank the volume and deal with the blown speakers. Great album from top to bottom! Not everything here is tops, but overall its close. 4.5 if I could.

Some absolute classics on here mixed with some pretty dated sounding pop songs. All in all though it’s a pretty enjoyable album! Shes a dancer for money!

Solid 80s. Some classics on here but Steel Claw was my favorite and I don’t think I’d heard it before. No complaints. Light 4.

I really wanted to give this a 5 but I just couldn’t get there. Her voice and presence are both top notch but lots the production did not age well. The cover of Help was a creative choice for sure.

Wow this album blew me away. I don’t think I realized how much TT’s music is pretty rock heavy. I incorrectly assumed she was more of like a Whitney Houston type where it was more pop/rnb driven. But this album is nearly a heavy metal album, well not heavy metal but definitely like a glam/hair metal album. I really loved this album and I love how punchy the keys are. Honestly I’m really smitten with this album. I think it might grow on me even more over time but as of right now it’s gunna be a concrete 4 only because the last few songs on the album didn’t do much for me. The first majority of the album absolutely rocks though.

Surprisingly good, or at least much better than I thought it would be. Private Dancer is a great song.

What’s the production/mixing? Is it just me? Does it suck? I feel like it sucks. It falls flat, especially when going alongside Tina’s iconic voice. Maybe the instrumentation or choice of instrument isn’t right. Not sure, but something isn’t quite feeling right. It gets better on the second half for some reason, which is where this album really shines. “Better Be Good To Me”, “Steel Claw”, and obviously “Private Dancer” are all incredible. “1984” ain’t her best work, though. Lyrically this album delivers. I’d easily give it a perfect score if that first side hadn’t been so funky. I love it, though. Loved the album, Tina. 4/5

I like doing this project because I get to hear all the songs my Dad referenced when he was trying to school me about the origins of music I was in to. Now I’m looking up all the artists who sang “I can’t stand the rain” before Missy did it in the 90s. Tina is an icon. I love her strong deep voice. “Whats Love Got To Do With It” is such a banger.

Private Dancer was undoubtedly a huge moment in Tina Turner's career, her return to the spotlight after a rocky solo career post Ike, and it produced a handful of the biggest hits of her career. The 1980's were a completely different sonic landscape from the soul, rock, and blues driven 60s and 70s when Tina established herself as the icon she is with her then-husband Ike. She was able to adapt to a new sound and era of music on Private Dancer, her fourth solo record. While this record has a handful of more live, raw sounding songs that harken back to that earlier sound, they're mixed with songs that embody the stylistic and production techniques popular at the time: thin, dry, and a more rigid adherence to quantization — an unfitting soundscape at times. The success of these tracks is a mixed bag, and they ultimately make the record sound dated forty years later. David Bowie apparently urged Capitol records to give Tina a solo deal after seeing her perform live a few years into her solo career started in 1978, a gesture that Tina was eternally grateful for. But he also penned the worst song on the record, the bizarre 1984.

I was surprised how much better the album got after What’s Love Got to Do With It. She can really belt it out man!

Mrs Tina reinventing herself in the 80s is just too incredible of a comeback that this album will always rip.

Her voice is incomparable. Despite the negative reviews from many, I quite enjoyed the album.

I had a vague appreciation for Tina Turner before this and quite enjoyed this album. Some great tracks (What’s Love Got to do With It, Private Dancer, I Can’t Stand the Rain, and Let’s Stay Together). Her voice is great and some of the harmonizing really just scratches that itch in my brain. It’s very of the time, but is a solid listen

This album singlehandedly turned Tina Turner into a superstar. And it's easy to see (and hear) why. The heights (essentially: the singles) are extremely high, but there is some filler material as well. It wouldn't be much of an overstatement to say that with the production values present, this album is a prime example for the sound of the early 80s. 4/5

Tina Turner had personality. Personality goes a long way. These are great versions of often great songs. It's slightly cheesy, in an 80s way, but this was a fun listen.

Great and iconic, but not really my jam.

Some great songs from a strong woman with a powerful voice. I saw her in concert back in the early ‘70s and she knows how to put a good show on!

What's Love Got to Do With It.... Banger. Really enjoying this more than I expected. Well, until Better Be Good to Me, and then it started to fall off hard. Enjoyed I Wrote a Letter quite a bit.

4 - Good solid voice and good solid song writing

Pop rock classic. Most songs amazing, 2-3 filler, but still good. 4/5

Strong album, fun instrumentals, great vocals. Does become a bit repetitive to have an album solely to do with love and breakups, particularly considering how done to absolute death that topic already was by that point, let alone by today’s standards - but she’s a pop singer so can’t exactly expect her to be writing about swords and dragons and shit. I Might Have Been Queen (8/10) What’s Love Got to Do with It (9/10) Show Some Respect (8/10) I Can’t Stand the Rain (7/10) Better Be Good To Me (7/10) Let’s Stay Together (7/10) 1984 (7/10) Steel Claw (8/10) Private Dancer (7/10) 7.6/10

the real boss

Shockingly the first time I’ve listened to a Tina Turner album. And much less shockingly it was great, loved her voice and the songs all hold up really well. Loved the Al Green cover too, it’s hard work to put your own spin on classics like that

Steel Claw is fire. Was not expecting a random Beatles cover.

One of the biggest female pop stars is of course Tina Turner. I just noticed that the album cover has a black cat

Great album. She really shines on the songs she sings with a gritty voice or a strident tone.

The album linked in Spotify is NOT the original release so PLEASE ignore that painful version of HELP. It wasn’t in the original US version and it is godawful. Once you eliminate that, it’s a fine album. That lady had soul and a great set of pipes!

Yeah, that slaps. A few bangers, a few sick covers, and 2 stone cold classics

It's wild to think, given the legend we all knew her to be, that people doubted Tina Turner being any success without Ike - that there was *opposition* to signing her to the label. Though it's seriously (SERIOUSLY) dated, it's insane to think anyone could know her as a vocalist & doubt her chops. Her singing is amazing on every song - growly, throaty, and unmistakably her. In some instances, you can even forget the dated 80s instrumentation backing her performance.

A classic.

Did not expect this at all.

p524. 1984. 4.5 stars. How to make a comeback in style. One of the great voices and live performers on top form, coupled with great songs. Even the covers sound fresh. Half a point deducted dated synths. As for the album cover: she might have her legs crossed but you can still see Tina Turner's pussy.

Great 80s fun here. Tina’s got an amazing voice. The second half lost me a bit and nearly dropped me down to a 3, but there are some real hits on the first half that saved the day. Pretty annoying that you can’t listen to the original track order on Spotify.

While disco ain't my bag, this ain't too shabby

Tina Turner's voice is spectacular, and there are some great and memorable songs on this album that really showcase it. However, the super 80s production is an unwelcome distraction at times. I really think this would have been a great choice to rerecord at a later date, day for it's 25th anniversary - it would be 5/5 with a more classic sounding backing band. I wasn't the biggest fan of the cover of Help! on the US version of the album - I don't think that added anything.

Great singles and the rest of the album was pretty good as well.

Was hovering somewhere between 3-4 but I accidentally listened to some of the extended edition I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Better be good to me >>>>

Dated sounding for sure with the Casio and the '80s drum sound, but also nostalgic for me, though I had only heard 4 of these before. The Al Green and Beatles covers were just OK, Steel Claw was an interesting one going for the hard rock sound, like a Beat It vibe? I enjoyed it, and wouldn't mind hearing it again, so a low 4/5.

Very enjoyable. Felt conflicted about how much I liked her Help! cover, but it really sounds like one of her own in this arrangement. I recognised and liked a few famous ones. No duds on the original version of the album, but found those on the 30th Anniversary edition (the only one I had access to) to be dull, aka the rock 'n roll ones: Rock 'n Roll Widow and Don't Rush the Good Things A stand out song from that edition, though, was I Wrote A Letter. One of the best on the album.

Tina Turner at her most 80s and it is glorious

This is one of my dad's favorite albums and after listening to it I get why he likes it, even though I don't enjoy her voice all that much. It's a tad too long for me too.

El sonido de los 80s personificado. Un álbum con mucho groove, rock y soul. Las versiones de "Let's Stay Together" y de "Help" son excelentes. Algunos de los temas son un poco largos, pero aún así un gran álbum.

This is really really awesome, I have to say - love the Al Green cover, but the whole thing is bold and fun!

The typa album that'll start you off on a good day :)

Really good!

Tina Turner is so cool. A lot of good songs here. My favourite is What's Love Got To Do With It. My least favourite is I Can't Stand The Rain. I guess I'm too used to the original version.

This was really fun, there’s a lot of female singer song writers on the list , getting aretha and Tina back to band is great , love the rb The b side was my fav, private dancer , hadn’t heard that let’s stay together cover and help stood out

I loved most of this. I didn’t really care for the covers, but the stuff meant for Tina to sing was really fun.

Great artist! Great album! She had some of the top musicians and producers on this date. She kills it, as always. Overcame a hard life and an asshole husband and blessed us all with her gift. Thank you, Tina!

Not sure why I’ve never listened to a Tina Turner album before. Some absolute bangers on this

Strong 80s pop. The start of Tina Turner’s second era.

Get it Tina.

It’s Tina. This is an easy rating (She’s not my favorite, but god what a star)

Great pop-rock album with legendary Tina Turner

Die Stimme. Und bis auf das seltsame Cover von Help alles gute Songs.

Right off the bat, I’m listening to only the original version of the album here. I love you Tina, but I’m so far behind on albums to listen to here. That said - I dare one of you to listen to the 40th anniversary in its entirety. This is like the comeback album, a complete departure from her previous style. This being filled with covers by massive artists that Tina manages to make entirely her own is probably enough evidence as to how big a deal this was at the time. Let’s stay together in particular is one of Al Green’s best songs as it exists & I’ve got mad respect for Tina for not taking the easy route & doing a beat for beat cover of it. Absolutely full of energy, as you would expect - show some respect & steel claw were great songs for waking up on the morning walk. Okay I lied I listened to more than just the original album, but can you blame me? It’s Tina!

Very nice album, super powerful songs, there were a couple of hits in there as well, but overall really nice having in the background.

4/5. Just a crazy good collection of hits, even though none of them written by her. Although I usually feel weird about a song of other people's songs, only a few were performed by other artists, many were written for her. And does she sing them like she owns them. These are ingrained in pop music forever. Even the slower ballads are good, sometimes hard to find in the 80s. And the production is phenomenal, everything revolves around Tina and there is no doubt who is the star of the show. I think the last few songs are a little hit/miss but the first half is a classic collection for sure. Best Song: I Can't Stand The Rain, What's Love Got To Do With It, I Might Have Been Queen

Tina Turner's *Private Dancer* marked a pivotal moment in her career, transforming her from a has-been to one of the biggest stars of the 1980s. The album blends sleek pop production with rock energy, thanks to key collaborators like Terry Britten, Rupert Hine, and Martyn Ware. Standouts like "What’s Love Got to Do with It" and her version of "I Can’t Stand the Rain" showcase Tina's raw power and ability to reinvent herself. While the album is full of compelling performances, the reliance on covers—like "Help!" and "1984"—can sometimes feel less essential, especially when viewed through a modern lens where original interpretations are available at a click. Still, *Private Dancer* remains a testament to Tina’s resilience and her ability to reclaim control of her career and image, making it an iconic part of the '80s musical landscape.

This is definitely not cool to like in 2025, it was extremely dated. And yet here I am giving it a 4… what can I say, I am a sucker for the 80s production, I love the sax and What’s Love Got To Do With It is an all time banger

Overall good due to Tina’s performances. Song selection is interesting as there doesn’t seem to be a consistent theme. Not that there has to be but a few songs felt odd next to each other. The big hits are the best tracks in my opinion and the last song, 1984, sucks. I can’t figure out what the point of that song was. Was it going to be used for the 84 Olympics or Ronald Reagan’s reelection? I’ve never heard a song so focused on a particular year without a good lyrical narrative. It sounded like someone came up with a rhythm and sung -“Nineteen Eighty Four” over that and said “There’s the chorus! Now add a few tossed off phrases and, ta-dah, we got another song!” Baffling.

very fumky

4⭐ just for Auntie Tina's voice

Go Tina! A CMBC artist too. Mad respect to her after that ep.

I'm not sure what is about Tina but she always stood out from the other female pop/rock/r&b singers to me. I guess maybe her edge and rasp is a big part of it, but even though I enjoyed the radio songs I never listened to a full album. This one is supposedly the big ones and I knew a couple tracks coming in to it. "what's love got to do with it" is a classic but I think the cover of "1984" may be my favorite here. There are some other songs that definitely feel 40 years old, but not really in a bad way. Solid album that I feel like could be translated very easily to a modern style and still sound great--kind of like the Buddy Holly tribute album a while back. Favorite track "What's love got to do with it" 4.4/5

Of the legacy artists that enjoyed a resurgence in the 1980's, few were as deserving as Ms. Turner. With the doors at MTV finally opened to Black musicians, she left an indelible mark on the era. An all-star team of studio musicians, songwriters, and producers gathered to lift the Acid Queen to Pop superstardom. Her overwhelming success after leaving an abusive ex-husband, bandleader Ike Turner, added an air of empowerment to the work.

I’ve never really got to listening to Tina turner, but she’s good. I suppose it’s not exactly my taste, but it’s good music that lands it just around a four stars, for me at least.

Very 80s, but what a voice. The classics on this album (Private Dancer and What's Love Got To Do With It) are forever classics. Only thing that bothered me is that the album felt a little too long.

Liked it more than I thought I would

Straight heat, Tina Turner knew what she was doing, banger after banger.

this shit rocks. 4.5 because the songs are awesome but nothing totally blew me away. except maybe the title track. her voice is also just incredible wow. and me and gideon disagree but i love the silly 80s production.

Really great pop album, maybe my favorite I’ve gotten in the 80s. I was surprised because I usually find this genre super cheesy. The Help cover was pretty abysmal tho. Her voice is great on it but the instrumentals are as cheesy as you could imagine. Rating: 4.5

Better than Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

Tina Turner’s Private Dancer is an undeniable showcase of her powerhouse vocals. It’s packed with memorable hits, emotional depth, and a sense of raw power that’s undeniable. While not every song resonates on the same level, the album as a whole is a testament to Turner’s artistry and determination. The first thing that grabs me is Tina Turner’s voice. it’s phenomenal. Her raspy, powerful delivery carries so much emotion, and she balances vulnerability and strength with ease. Tracks like “What’s Love Got to Do with It” are iconic for a reason; her performance is both tender and commanding, making the song unforgettable. The production is polished, blending 80s flair with timeless appeal. Synths, crisp guitars, and steady rhythms create a rich soundscape. “Private Dancer” shines with its haunting, moody arrangement, perfectly matching Tina Turner’s soulful delivery. Mark Knopfler’s masterful guitar work adds depth and sophistication, elevating the track to an unforgettable level of artistry. While the production is strong, it occasionally feels too polished, especially on the uptempo tracks. The 80s influence works well but can make some songs feel slick and impersonal. At times, there’s a longing for a rawer, grittier edge that would allow Tina Turner’s powerful voice to take centre stage even more, offering a more intimate, authentic listening experience. The album boasts strong songwriting, exploring themes of independence, heartbreak, and empowerment. “Better Be Good to Me” stands out as a fiery anthem, resonating as a personal statement from Tina Turner. Her cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” is a standout reinterpretation, infusing the classic with her unique flair and soulful energy, making it truly her own. Private Dancer is a testament to Tina Turner’s incredible talent and resilience. Her powerful voice elevates even the weaker tracks, with highlights like “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Private Dancer,” and “Let’s Stay Together” being unforgettable. Though some songs feel dated or overproduced, the album remains a strong statement of Turner’s artistry. A solid 4.3/5 from me.

7/10 80s nostalgia has been kind and not too kind to various scenes and moments in music. We’re very much still worshiping a lot of Synthpop today, retro-aesthetics have hugely been based off a lot of New Wave, but we’ve also been reevaluating and have been critical of the over saturation of Pop Rock. This is slightly irrelevant but I thought about the weird worship of City-Pop that’s occurred in the past few years, records that have been overplayed to death in Japan to the point where they’re mainly vinyl to overcharge tourists with, even though those records have been based off of a lot of our Boogie, R&B, Funk, and Rock fusions here in the states that haven’t had the same level of reappraisal. Is there ever going to be a moment in time where the Ameriboo that wears cowboy hats everywhere, quotes Family Guy, and eats McDonald’s constantly will walk into a record store and pick up a copy of a pretty decent album like Private Dancer for $80? I can only hope so. In a just world, Forget Me Nots is bigger than Plastic Love.

Start of the second career for Tina Turner, a classic 80s style record, with support from her friedn David Bowie.

5 stars because it's the Goddess Tina Turner and because What's Love Got to Do With It and Private Dancer were two major hits of my youth. Plus, I'm totally here for her cover of Let's Stay Together. I'm taking a star away because of the Help! cover, though.

I feel like it's been a while since I got some real classic 80s pop from this site. Most 80s albums I've gotten have been a lot more focused on stuff like new-wave and post-punk, so it's nice to get something like this for a change. Anyways, Private Dancer is pretty good. Tina Turner is an absolute icon, and she may not have that status without this album. Despite many of these songs being written by different people (including David Bowie and Mark Knopfler by the way!), the tone of this whole album fits the liberation that represents this part of her career so well. Tina's voice is strong. I like it. The sound is nice. It's very 80s, but I wouldn't say it's aged poorly. It's aged in a way that paints a positive picture of the time it's from. Maybe I'm biased. I don't know. The album's not perfect. Some of the songs don't hit as hard as the others. But generally speaking, I think this is a solid album that I like. Low 4/5.

Fun album

Strong 80s vibes

Very subdued instrumentation that encourages (forces) you to focus on Tina's voice. Simple jams written by talented people and sang by a great singer. Also, Welcome to the Thunderdome. 3.5/5

Much more to the album that I had remembered.

Excellent. 4.5.

Household name that never was big in my household. Great strong voice that sounds like it would destroy anyone else’s throat to sing like that. At least two of the songs were covers, which were probably my favorite two songs, not sure if that is good or bad. The biggest hit on the album, Tiny Stripper Dancer, was ok, just repeated the same line over and over for like 5 minutes. I liked the funky upbeat stuff a bit more than the slow synth pop stuff. Pretty solid album that sounds a bit dated due to being in the middle of the 80s. 7/10

This was gas! Ty Tina

An odd experience. Like most people, I've been bombarded by the singles from this album (although, somehow, not the massacred version of Help) without having heard the whole thing in one sitting. I swear I did not know there was a longer version of the title track. Undoubtedly, this record made TT a solo star. And it is very good, except Help!

Legend before and a Legend after. A true survivor and deserved everything and more after this album

so 80s :D

I didn't know what to expect with this album. I certainly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, that's for sure. It's so 80's. Ridiculously 80's. Possibly the most 80's thing I've ever heard. The sound, the production, the instruments. Not a bad thing necessarily. I like it all. The songs themselves are strong for the most part other than a really terrible cover of Beatles classic 'Help' which was truly crap. It was turned into a slow, desperate sounding ballad and I actively disliked it. Everything else though is really great. Fun, upbeat tracks. The pop and rock genres are perfectly moulded together with Tina's fantastic voice shining through. I really enjoyed the Bowie cover of '1984' and obviously everyone knows 'What's Love Got To Do With It'. I've seen that people dislike the solo on 'Steel Claw' and I couldn't disagree more. A bit screechy to start with but it's great and fits the song well. Overall a really fun album from Tina.

The live tracks read very very well, the rest felt like something was missing. Great songwriting all the same.

so many bops, she is one of the best favorite track: private dancer

Great voice and a great album. A lot of hits on this one.

Queen of rock, they say. I certainly like it.

Tina Turner rules! Just super strong, powerful vocals. You can definitely jazzersise to the opening track. Sweat it out!! What's Love Got to Do With It? Dope! Much nostalgia. I Can't Stand the Rain sounds a bit like a Peter Gabriel tune. Man, so many hits on this album. Private Dance is a karaoke favorite. Interesting cover on Let's Stay Together, and I love her take on it, as well as Ball of Confusion. Good stuff. This is a solid 80's album with passionate vocals. 4 stars here.

I'm here for this '80s Mom-Rock! Yes, it definitely sounds of its time, but what can I say, I love the 80s, cheese and all. And especially with Tina Turner, a great singer and all around performer. Her voice is so warm but world-weary, and she brings so much depth of feeling to these songs about triumph over bad times in love. Glad she went on to have a happy ending IRL. RIP!

Surprised how enjoyable this was. Very of its time in terms of production, but accessible and not overly cringe

Classy

I love the title track. The album is full of bops. The only thing I disliked was some of the repetitive nature of a few songs.

Ein paar großartige Klassiker in diesem Album

Some very solid 80s pop, better than I expected. Her performances are great all over this, the title track especially is excellent. There's a decent bit of range across the tracklist too, doesn't just feel like a bunch of similar throwaway tracks. A nice surprise.

85% Best: I Might Have Been Queen; What's Love Got to Do with It; Show Some Respect; Steel Claw; 1984 Must-Hear? Sure

Tina Turner just slays and leaves no survivors on this album. "Private Dancer" marks a very stark departure from her previous R&B sound. In this rebirth, she creates what is no doubt the musical form that she is most known for. Her gravelly voice is a perfect fit for this pop-rock/rock and roll style. And speaking of style, the album cover is simple and yet iconic, and it captures Tina's new physical appearance that she would become known for too, including her iconic "mullet". Don't get me wrong, not every song is a "What's Love Got To Do With It", but they come damn close. For me, there were no skips on this album; her voice and the music do a fantastic job of driving this album beyond just this one particular hit. No other notes -- just a legendary album by a legendary woman.

I don’t go out of my way to pop in a Tina Turner CD in my sweet Magnavox portable CD player with skip protection, but if I did, I wouldn’t be mad about it. Girl can belt some good tunes.

This is a fine album that deserves to be on the list. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it because I associate Turner with the disco era. And while it was hairdresser music, you know, the music on KISS108 radio that wasn’t disco and allways on at beauty shops, it is 80s soul. Turner was a talented singer and created songs with emotion and power. Even her covers, which for many artists are throw away fillers on their albums, are good.

Luxurious pop-rock sound with a soul character. Maybe people who say the '80s had the best music are right.

Solid performance!

Bangers

Iconic

Really fun with good tunes and better lyrics

I love Tina Turner! Even though this album sounds a bit too 80's, it's great and it's different from other records because of her voice.

You don't have to love this album but if you give it less than a three you're on Ike's side.

I am familiar with Tina Turner as the so-called "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" after launching a solo career post-divorce. In fact, I've previously heard "What's Love Got to Do With It" off this album and enjoyed that. After listening, I can say that the rest of Private Dancer mostly live up to the same quality as that track. Tina showed off her pipes on this album, as her charisma and delivery carry these songs while playing across 80's rock and R&B styles. "Show Some Respect", the title track, and "Better Be Good to Me" make for an excellent showcase of what she was capable of with outside songwriters lending their hand. My only complaints are with the dated production - not helped by the multiple producers involved for inconsistent quality, and that nearly half of these songs are covers. Granted, she does pull off unique spins on the Beatles' "Help!" and David Bowie's "1984" which work, but the rest of them don't quite live up to the bar set by the original tracks. Overall, I had a fun time with Private Dancer, and give it a solid recommendation.

It's honestly such a slay. This is what we call in the industry "bulletproof hospitality" because it's never not serving. This is for a specific vibe.

A little slick, as one would expect from this era. However, Turner’s voice is still powerful and her passion carries through. It’s also an interesting choice of covers. Good album for sure.

One of the great musicians of the twenthieth century, although not one of my favourites. But there is no doubt that this album is very good.

This album has so many good memories for me. Vicky and I saw her live on the Private Dancer tour before we were married. Probably the biggest album of Tina's career.

Great singer, wonderful energy, really solid album.

ok, somewhat too soft

My review condensed: Hell yeah Tina. Get it. So Spotify only had the 30th anniversary version with extra tracks. I looked up the original release, and only listened to the songs that were on there. They also changed the track order for the 30th anniversary, so I reordered them as well. So my review is based on recreating the original release. This sound isn't usually my thing, but Tina just went so all out on every song that I ended up loving it. She goes 200% at every moment. Especially on "I cant stand the rain". I also like that she put a real solid rock song on there (Steel Claw). This album went all over the place, tried a lot of different things, and made them all work while still sounding totally cohesive. Album cover: B+. Saucy.

Okay Tina. OKAY TINA!

I'd never listened to Tina Turner before and this album didn't disappoint. The songs are all over the place and don't really flow into one another but I never felt like it was an issue. It sounds like an album of 10 separate songs, but Tina does such an amazing job that it makes the album feel fresh the entire time. My favorite songs are "Show Some Respect" "I Can't Stand the Rain" "Better Be Good to Me" and "Steel Claw". Did the same person really Make Show some Respect and Steel Claw and put them on the same album? This is a ton of fun. Good stuff Tina. 8/10

This is the good shit. Didn’t know she was this good.

Kind of obsessed with I Can't Stand the Rain, both versions

This album starts off pretty calm, but gets pretty hype in the second half when the covers start. I enjoyed this album a lot and liked every song. I will consider it a high 4/5.

You know what, before this I never really liked her music, cuz it's just the same two singles over and over on the radio. But this was pretty great.

Fairly cheesy, with waaaay too much saxomophone, but plenty of good songs too. I've got a lot of time for Tina, and this is one of her best. I Can't Stand the Rain in particular is outstanding

luckily i have all the time in the world to listen to music today since i am studying. some very fun tunes! 4/5

A great eighties pop/R&B album with Turner’s rocking voice.

What a cracking voice Tina Turner has. It is the kind of voice where you can’t imagine her ever being anything else but a singer. Imagine if she spend her life in construction or something. That would be crazy. Anyway, I was surprised to find so much guitar throughout this album. I could easily imagine a glam rock band doing a cover of this whole album and it wouldn’t even sound that weird. My one gripe is that I really don’t like this version of Let’s Stay Together, but otherwise this was pretty banging.

Doesn't get more 80s than this.

Some all time great songs and some not so good songs on this one. The first half of the album is excellent.

seems like spotify doesn't like this album (one song unavailable and only one with lyrics) but I sure do! the cover of Help was okay, but it's one of those songs I can't unhear the one I know! Anyway, having the power ballads on to workout seemed like a good idea, but then it got slow hahaha. had a good time w Tina nonetheless x

This rocks harder than I expected.

Initial thought: my goodness, the sound production plants this squarely in the early-mid 80s. It's not my favourite Tina era, but then I started thinking... This was her first successful solo release, after emerging from the personal shit-show of her first marriage. This puts many of the songs into a meaningful context (despite not being written by her, or even with her in mind, they ~feel~ like they belong to Tina). "What's Love Got To Do With It" is a reclaiming of sexuality, with a resistance to getting emotionally involved. "Better Be Good To Me" lays out some ground rules in a cautious yet optimistic acceptance of a relationship forming. Overall an important album for Tina personally, and huge in its time. It's not on high rotation for me but I appreciate the significance.

What a great voice, what a great album! We all know about Tina Turner talent. This album can't be rated less than 4/5.

wow, this was a lot of fun. pure 80s. i was really surprised by all the low reviews because I was jammin'.

FAVO: I might have been queen, What's love, Show respect, Private Dancer, Let's stay together, Steel Claw

Tina Turner is masterful in this album!

An album full of feeling and passion. Tina Turner's voice commands every track and each song tells a story. Along with the 80s synth and beat, the album keeps your attention from the faster paced songs to the slower ballads.

Memories 1984 Tina Turner at her very best! RIP Tina Turner. Respect.

My first time listening to Tina Turner ever. Honestly, when I heard the first track here I rolled my eyes a little. It's about as generic 80s as you can get. I still think It's the weakest song here and is quite an underwhelming intro. I say all this just to say that everything after that, I enjoyed. I mean yeah instrumentally speaking there's not much interesting going on, and that could've easily made this album unlistenable and just another run-of-mill poorly-aged 80s record. But the thing that makes it all stick out and so enjoyable is Tina herself. She writes some great damn songs, every song here sounds like a hit in its own right. Obviously "What's Love Got to Do with It" is incredible but I also love the guitar-backed "Let's Stay Together", this song doesn't feel like it's 5 minutes long. "Private Dancer" may be the most striking track here. A story of a woman wanting to be hired as a prostitute (or taxi dancer I guess) for a man. I'm not sure what the underlying message is here if there even is one, but I really enjoy its lengthy cinematic presentation and very intimate instrumentation. I like Tina's more fiery performance on "I Can't Stand the Rain", a tragic song about a lost relationship with a killer chorus. "Steel Claw" was very enjoyable too, it has another very catchy chorus as well with some 70s hard rock-sounding influence in the vocals. "Thriller" by Mike is an album that I never remember for its instrumentation, but its songs. I feel very similar here, there's very little to be impressed by instrumentally speaking but Tina's a very talented, dynamic, and expressive vocalist and she practically carries this album. She has a strained and almost raspy vocal that seems occasionally buried in the mix but still manages to stand out. Her cadence blends the best aspects of both pop-rock and RnB vocal styles. The instrumentals here aren't bad or anything, they work very well with her voice and they're dynamic and varied enough across most of these songs. All-in-all I really enjoyed my time with this thing, it's just banger after banger which is all I can ask for from an album like this. RIP to this absolute talent.

I've never really listened to, seen, read or smelt Tina Turner, but this was pretty cool. I know the hits but not much else. Not my normal kind of thing but it was definitely high energy and pumping. Some of it reminded me of Eurythmics

❤️

Tina Turner's Private Dancer marks one of the great come-back stories in popular music. Tina first found success as a singer in a band with her first husband, Ike Turner. Tina escaped from that abusive relationship, and then struggled to find success as a solo artist. Private Dancer was the album that ended her struggles, and met with international critical and commercial success. Her songs are driven by her potent, soulful voice, like the title track and "What's Love Got to do With It." Her energetic performances drove a sequence of successful, international tours that made Tina into a superstar.

I've never been a Tina Turner fan but this album is very good with a few of her well-known songs. Many of the songs seemed to related to her previous abusive relationship so it felt very personal and quite raw. Listens: 1 Fave Track: What's Love Got To Do With It? Rating: 4

Tina just kills. Had never heard the album. It’s so consistent.

Tina had such a powerful presence; very soulful and energetic album.

It started out really screechy and reminded me of my mom when I was sick. Then as it went on and the Nostalgia hit for the songs that I recognized and remembered I really got into it. Going to add it to the mobile collection

Great music

Some set of lungs on her Tina

They don't make them like Tina anymore that's for sure, the queen of rock and roll.

What a voice. The album that resurrected Tina’s career too.

Solid music planted in the center of her career revitalization. Wish I hadn’t burned myself out on this one years ago.

Classic Tina :D

Great singer and some great music!

I like this

•Not owned: Streaming •Besides the opener—which is too tinny for me to forgive—this is a solid pop album that Tina Turner brings her all too. Standouts include "Steel Claw", the title track, and a perfectly arranged cover "I Can't Stand the Rain". •4/5

What an impressive head of hair on the album cover! Homegirl was making sure she was tall enough to ride all of the rides at Six Flags. I don't understand why there is a US order of songs and an International order, but I queued it up to follow to US order. USA! USA! USA! Love this plucky, synthy, energetic 80's sound right off the bat. Fun album full of energy that is right up my alley. Enjoyed every song. Very high 4 on here.

Some great songs, her cover of Let's Stay Together really adds something. However, 1984 should be dropped I think...

Classic.

What a memorable album that defined an era. Classic 80s powerhouse diva right here.

The mother of all comeback albums! Tina Turner was the definition of a powerhouse who left it all on the stage. We wouldn’t have a Beyoncé without first having a Tina.

Again, similarly to how I felt about Aretha’s album. At first I wasn’t into it though, but I kept listening and I enjoyed it more and more. She doesn’t always have the best vocals, in my opinion, but I could groove to it.

I liked this! I can’t tell if I was awake for the middle part of the album or not but either way my subconscious has heard it. the Spotify reccomended songs that played after the album were so good so I think that might impact my rating 8/10

Several classics that put a smile on my face

Few bangers, not massively cohesive but she's an absolute legend and I would over anything she does 🥰

Iconic ; )

Tina rocks

Obviously knew the famous songs but found myself warming to this album a lot overall, loved Tina's voice with the 80s production

This isn't an album I would have chosen to listen to myself. Nothing but respect for Tina Turner and her dynamic voice and personality. But the music never really appealed to me. Truth be told, most of this album isn't my style, but I'm rating highly mainly because it was a pleasure to hear her and there were some nice surprises. This version of 'I Can't Stand the Rain' is fantastic and the highlight for me. I also wasn't expecting a cover from Bowie's unrealized Orwell musical.

Much better than I thought it would be.

Good songs, didn’t like all the repeats near the end

This album is very much of its time, when you listen to it nearly 40 years later it gives you a snapshot of mainstream music for that era. It's not a bad album, just not an album that particularly stands out when you compare it against others of the same era, it is listenable but not the kind of album that you would go back to time and time again. This was a departure from Tina Turner Hallmark sound but this was her relaunching herself for the 80s and I believe she did a pretty good job of it as her career Continued well into the 90s.

I’ve never heard Private Dancer or Can’t Stand The Rain before. Wow those were some great songs. I listened to this album while painting and the energy was a big help.

Altså Tina! Mine Britney cravings ble mettet. Awesome.

Kan niet anders dan vier sterren geven. Wat een pareltje <3

Ja, kan niet anders

Un 4, porque Tina es TINA. Parece que molan más las canciones del directo.

QUEEN OF ROCK N ROLL BABY She's excellent. Crazy that she was 45 when she put out what is likely her best album. Amazing her career took off in her middle years.

World class. Can’t help but sing along to What’s Love…

fantastic overall, several bangers, incredible vocals. Questionable production and instrumentals, but good nonetheless. favourite track : '1984'

It's not often we get a song on an album using a sample from an album we get a few weeks later. I Can't Stand the Rain was a surprise, and What's Love Got to Do With It is a classic. I've also heard Lets Stay Together too! This was a surprise hit and I'm glad this was on here. Love the kitty on the cover.
