Pretty good album, great vocals and a few bangers

Solid album. Great songwriting. Simply the best.

Best thing I've listened to today.

Much better than I expected. I wasn’t looking forward to listening to this album but it’s actually quite good. The biggest surprise, though, is that What’s Love Got To Do With It is one of my least favourite song on the album. Pretty overrated song. 8/10 Top 3: 1. Show Some Respect 2. Steel Claw 3. Let’s Stay Together

Add to vinyl

This slapped, motown vibes

I give it 4 stars since much of the music is not original with Tina Turner, even if her versions are the most recognizable. Incredible performer.

Very 80's. Some good songs. Private Dancer is super depressing. What's Love Got To Do With It and I Can't Stand The Rain are bops.

Ovo bi treba bit zlatni standard pop albuma.

Banger of an album

I went to pick through some vinyl records from my parents old collection a few months ago before they got rid of it. I stupidly passed this one over.

good pop

Great album overall! I watched a live Steel Claw performance which was really impressive, Tina Turner didn't stop frenetically dancing the whole time.

Immediate classic: ask anyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s who they listen to and you are bound to get a bunch of Tina. Iconic songs are littered in this album, yeah a lot of the stuff is dull and a little uninspiring but for those few dance hits I feel it deserves so much praise.

A lot of hits on this album. I loved the raw energy of Tina's voice whether she blasting out a pop tune or singing soulfully about the pitfalls of love

I grew up listening to Ike and Tina Turner's version of "Proud Mary" pretty regularly, but this was my first time listening to an entire album of Tina's. I'll be honest that I didn't have super high hopes that I would enjoy this album, mostly because her songs are pretty hit or miss with me. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed listening to this. The songs here were really great (I know Tina didn't write any of them, but that's fine by me), and they really showcased Tina's unique vocals and her ability to carry an entire pop-rock album. These songs all felt like they were perfect for her, especially the Mark Knopfler-penned title track, which still managed to have his sound all over it. I pretty much only know the Cliff's Notes from Tina's life, but I can easily see how this album was a pivotal point in her career, and the fame and attention she received from here on out was well deserved. Favorite track: "Better Be Good To Me," which I actually heard for the first time last week when I was listening to Eighties on Eight on Sirius.

Great album with private dancer and you better be good to me and what’s love got to do with it three Classics

Today's album is one that I know the hits off of (What's Love Got To Do With It, Private Dancer, I Can't Stand The Rain), but have never heard it cover to cover before. The songs I do know are great, so I'm hoping the rest of the album is the same. Tina Turner is a pop rock artist from the 80's. This was an album of rediscovery for Tina. She had shredded her vocal chords, so had to re-learn how to sing for this record, also this was her first solo album to be more pop rock than r&b/soul (like her smash hit, Proud Mary). David Bowie wrote the song 1984, and Tina sings a version of it on this record. Apparently those two had a short fling while touring for their duet "Tonight" which was on Tina's album Tina Live In Europe. I guess the two were backstage, and David came out of the shower wearing nothing but one of Tina's wigs, and started emulating her dance moves. It is said that this led to a one night stand that never went any further. Mark Knopfler wrote the song Private Dancer, but didn't think it was a Dire Straits song, so Tina sang it instead. There is a solo in that song by Jeff Beck. The amount of collaborations on this record are fascinating. It was such a powerful record. The song that really surprised me which I didn't know before today, but thoroughly enjoyed was Steel Claw. That song is an absolute banger! Overall, a phenomenal record today. I'm glad I listened to some more of Tina's stuff, and will absolutely listen again! Favourite songs: What's Love Got To Do With It, Steel Claw, Show Some Respect, Private Dancer, I Wrote a Letter, 1984, I Might Have Been Queen/Soul Survivor, Let's Stay Together, When I Was Young Least favourite songs: I Can't Stand The Rain 4/5

Can't fail with Tina Turner

It’s good, really good. The title track is the massive standout here.

Still get excited whenever "Better Be Good To Me" comes on the radio The strange Bowie cover “1984” (not familiar with the original) revels in the then-modern sound, like they know it’ll sound like a bygone era in a few years. Maybe it would be a 5/5 if “We Don’t Need Another Hero” was part of the original tracklist

So, so 80s

Wow - this popped up on my list the day before she passed away. Always loved the Queen and there are some great tunes on this.

Megatykki! 4/5

Sitä parempaa kasaria! Steel Claw kunnon tykittelyä. 4/5

Very good, only recently learned how versatile Tina is and there are some great songs on here

It's more like soft jazz than I thought it would be. I'll say flat-out: Tina can sing. The musicians on this album are really good ... some excellent solos.

What a nice change of pace. Tina has such a unique and impassioned voice. It's like she's constantly begging and hoping and clawing for more in so many songs. This album makes you listen to the message, and care for the person underneath.

I loved this one a lot more than I thought I was going to. Can feel the soul & emotion even though the music is very 80’s

Love Tina, but man the mid 80’s synth and drum machines, etc is tough to take.

Very good album. Well representative of her work.

Interesting 80s sound, first time really listening to her but can see why she’s iconic. Some sounds I really like, others are a bit cheesy 80s for my taste

Lekker album, meer ‘80s wordt het bijna niet. Goede nummers, fantastische stem.

4/9, 44%

As I recall, at the time this album came out, it was highly regarded for its polish and really modern sound. Really, it cemented Tina Turner's status as a star, but it's also a product of its era. In spite of some solid musical and songwriting talents backing Turner up, some of the music on this album is chintzy/flat in an 80s kind of way. Turner's powerful vocals cut through much of that like a knife, but there's a limit to how much she can carry some of these songs on her own. Several outstanding tracks make this album a classic for its era, and certainly Turner's best album. But it's definitely a little worse for wear 40 years on. Fave Songs: What's Love Got to Do with It, Better Be Good to Me, Private Dancer, Steel Claw, Let's Stay Together

Queen of Rock

I was familiar with several of the songs. I enjoyed album. I would listen to it again

Cool rock album. Steel Claw is a banger.

Listened to this a lot back in 1984

Jeff beck guitar solo, songs written by bowie and mark knopfler. Pop bangers, enough for a 4/5

This album was groovy and fun. So many hits! Rounding up because the track with Bryan Adams at the end was chef's kiss 3.5/5

Fav songs: - I Might Have Been Queen - Show Some Respect - I Can't Stand The Rain - 1984

80s classic. Album fucks

I wavered between 3 and 4 on this one. If we had a 10 point scale this would definitely be a 7. Clearly some powerful vocals from a woman that has dealt with a lot. The instrumentation teeters between her rocking funky vibes to straight-up junky 80s muzak. Also, while some of the covers are great reworkings (I.e. Help!), some are just mediocre songs that actually sound worse (I.e. 1984). But definitely some certified bangers like I Can’t Stand the Rain and Better Be Good to Me.

I really loved this album. The run from Private Dancer to Help! is one of the strongest string of songs I’ve ever heard. She put a poppy twist on a number of great covers and her strong bluesy voice was wrought with such emotion you couldn’t help but think of her complicated history. I would’ve given this a 4.5 out of 5.

Loved the start of the album

What a great album. Not top of my list for go to, but the songs and hits can’t be denied. Solid 4. In the anniversary edition I love the Tonight song of Iggy done by Bowie and Turner. T3B 1. 1984 2. What’s Love Got To Do with It 3. Steel Claw

This might actually be the top one we’ve listened to for me. Something about her voice just grated on me tho

Really quite good, Tina is one of the all-time performers for a reason. Her ability to switch from smooth R&B to good old swinging rock n roll is timeless, but a lot of the production and songwriting choices do ultimately date it. But that’s still pretty damn good. B

Enjoyable

absolute banger tbh

Tina is fantastic. Absolutely stellar. She wails, growls, sweetly croons, then back to bluesy growling again. Her voice is so versatile and she exudes talent! There are some banging hits here, too, although the album suffers from 80s overproduction, and at points the instrumentation is a bit painful. Overall a great album.

Bangers. Show some respect goes crazy

really liked this, I didnt realize how many timeless, huge songs are on this album! good upbeat little thing to get ya through the day

I LOVE Tina’s voice. It’s the standout quality of the album for me, being a bit rough but also endlessly smooth. “Steel Claw” is the best example of this. She just has this strong energy about her that comes through in her vocal performance. The instrumentation is also upbeat and rhythmic, which emphasizes the strength of Tina’s voice. Great album to dance to. Faves: Let’s Stay Together, Steel Claw, Help!, Better Be Good To Me

Highlights: What's Love Got To Do With It, Show Some Respect

It’s Tina Turner alright!! Good stuff obviously. My faves: Show Some Respect, Private Dancer, Steel Claw, 1984, I Wrote A Letter, When I Was Young

Great Album

So fun, still holds up.

Private Dancer, Better Be Good to Me, What's Love Got to Do with It

Holy crap there's way more ripping guitar in this album than I would have expected, if I expected any. This is one of the ballsiest albums I've ever heard, so much force and electricity, tempered by sweetness and fortitude. And that voice. Damn.

This album is pretty good. It's got good energy and has a nice nice of songs. I think the first half of the album is better than the second half, but the second half songs aren't bad either. Also Private Dancer is a good song, but could be shorter. Favorite song: What's Love Got to Do with It Worst song: I Can't Stand the Rain

Good songs, gigantic voice, great times!

I enjoyed this! The most shocking thing about this album though was the Bowie cover though, did not anticipate that.

This album at once sounds like a prototypical 80’s album, but is also one of the best versions of an 80’s album. What’s Love Got To Do With It is one of the all time great hits. Some of the cover songs on here, I Can’t Stand The Rain, in particular, are excellent interpretations of the original. I didn’t care for Tina’s version of Help, however. Some other tracks here just rock out in that 80’s dance hall way better than many of the contemporary rock bands. And then there’s just Tina Turner, reinventing herself and stunning the world.

Unas tonadas de la Turner. Hay bastantes lentas, así que un 4.

Sometimes her voice is a little overwrought for my tastes. Classy album however, with some great stuff including the collabs with BEF.

This is a true classic. Everyone must have heard this at least once. This really gets you going and in a good mood. Musically not too complex but it does the job very well. And of course. Tina can sing amazingly well.

Great record containing the monster hit 'What's Love Got To Do with It' which I never actually held in high regard. But Turner delivers an impressive vocal performance accompanied by a smooth funky guitar. Some aspects of the album sound incredibly dated, like 'Show Some Respect', but almost every tune is still a lot of fun! 'I Can't Stand The Rain' is such an incredible tune, and TT does a great job covering it. I don't really get why 'Private Dancer' became such a hit? It's a lot of repetition with bland instrumentation a la Dire Straits (edit: lol, just found out that Knopfler wrote the track and members of Dire Straits recorded it for this album). A fun trip to glam metal on 'Steel Claw', an emotional rendition of 'Help', and a solid Bowie cover in '1984' closes out a surprisingly entertaining record.

What's DEAN got to do with it? Why it's time to Tina TURNer the clocks ahead! Happy Daylight Savings!

The musical arrangements sound a bit sterile and dated, but the quality of the songs and Turner's outstanding vocal performance make this a solid 80's pop album.

Strong songs, splendid voice.

Great singing, great music

Good nostalgic 80s vibe. Great singing and songwriting

The original US edition of this album did not have "Help!" on it. It's probably a good thing, because that was a pretty bad version of it. That notwithstanding, this was pretty good, 80s production styles and all. The songs really leaned into Tina's singing capabilities. I didn't realize how many of her "big" songs were on this album. "Private Dancer" is a little bit embarrassing and dated now, but most of the others work still. I've always liked "Better Be Good To Me", I thought it was a better song than most of the other singles on this album (except for "What's Love..." of course). "Steel Claw" reminds of an Ike & Tina song, but updated for the 80s. The cover of "Let's Stay Together" is... adequate. I mean, it's such an iconic song it's hard to cover it and do it justice. It's like trying to cover "Layla". No matter how you do on it, people are still going to say "yeah, but the original is better." "1984" is an interesting choice to cover. I love Bowie, and covering one of his songs is always difficult. But she does it justice I think, taking a song in the 70s and bringing it into... the 80s. On the strength of the hits I would put this right on the edge of the 3/4 line. Really the only real misstep for me was "Help." That did not work for me at all. So I guess I would give it a 4 out of 5.

A full album is perhaps a bit too much Tina Turner, however enjoyed this immensely. She's an undeniably fantastic front person, the music is great but she's like a permanent light shining on every song.

I was not really into Tina Turner until today. I don't have good reasons for it, but it always sounded slightly "artificial" to me. Thanks to this list, I'm glad to have the opportunity to listen to it today. This album is not something I classify as excellent or perfect, but it's everything rather than artificial. It's intense rock music with meaningful lyrics and excellent voice work. When I saw my home project page this morning, I was somewhat disappointed, but now I hope to see more of Tina's albums in the future.

Go on, Tina! Give it some welly!!

What's Love Got to do with it is a cracker, and I'll happily attempt to belt along to this, drunk or sober. I mean, Show Some Respect is some proper shoulder bouncing stuff. I'm dancing in my seat right now. The intro to 'I can't stand the rain is great' with those techy marimba sounds (the intrusive brass...less so). Even the songs I don't particularly like, it's pretty hard to sit still to it.

Tina was precies wat ik nodig had.

Very much 80s, love her voice. Great album.

Great. I didn't know that she did so many covers

Rock solid, very enjoyable

Favourite song: Private Dancer One for the Karaoke: What’s Love Got To Do With It? One for the Car: Show Some Respect TT holdin’ it down baby

Best song - Let’s stay Together One for karaoke - Private Dancer One for a run - Steel Claw 80s banger. Exactly what I expected. Let’s Stay Together will be a weekly regular

Fun album. Original sounding voice.

Banger

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: What’s love gotta do with it, I can’t stand the rain, Private dancer, When I was young

Rating only for Private Dancer. Song goes hard.

As other reviews have noted, this is eighties as fuck. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Turner's voice is incredible. Powerful, expressive and unmistakably hers. Majority of the tracks on this album suit her voice perfectly. "I can't stand the rain" is aggressively horrible. It's better than Miss Elliott's cover, but that isn't saying much. It's raspy, repetitive and a hard skip from the tracklist. Private Dancer is a bit sad. Would I listen to this again? Nope. Would I object someone else playing it within earshot? Nope. Do I see the significance of the album in its historical context? Yep.

Odd that the tracks with more electronics hold up better than those with acoustic drums and guitars. Let's Stay Together holds its own in comparison with Al Green's original and the Heaven 17-boosted songs makes you wish it had been a consistent style across the album. Help! in particular still clangs heavy for me.

It’s fucking Tina turner, is there anymore you have to say?

Classic Tina

29th June 2022 Listened on the way from Sav’s into the office. Travelled back to painswick and chilled in the evening. Can’t not love a bit of Tina, one of the holy triumvirate along with Aretha and Queen Bey.

So many bangers on this album, only suffers from a few cover songs that are only so-so

Dated mid-80s production and lots of covers but still was a huge hit.

better than I expected, grew on me some.

Tina really did a fine job on this album. Full of really good songs. 4/5 Standouts: Private Dancer, I Can't Stand the Rain, What's Love Got to Do With it?, Let's Stay Together. Others: 1984, Better Be Good To Me, Help! (From the International Version)

Had a lot of her hits. Love her.

I've always like Tuina Turner from a nostalgic perspective as an 80s/90s kid, and because I love the Mad Max series. But we watched a documentary on her a year or so ago. She's incredible and I have so much respect for her. This a great 80s record and it has her biggest(?) single ever in "What's Love Got to Do with it." I love that song. And, I appreciate that she provided sample material to Missy Elliot ("I Can't Stand the Rain"). I never knew that's where that sample came from. It's a great song. And, the synth sounds on this record are top notch.

Tina. Amazing. I remember when this album was released, and hearing the stories of the abuse she suffered for so many years. Whenever I hear 'What's Love Got To Do With It', I get a little misty-eyed even after all these years. Separating the personal story from it, it's a darn beautiful song lyrically and musically. And, of course, her voice. That voice. Even in the tracks that aren't normally to my taste -- the kind of mid-80s dance types that I don't actively dislike; I'm just not that into -- her voice carries it all. I'm so glad to know she achieved so much success with this album and for decades after. I'm gushing, I know. I'm a fan, and I'm inspired. Shine on, Beautiful Star!

Amazing record, amazing artist 4/5

Love the synths. Dig her voice. Bendy synths are making a comeback

Boy does Tina have a voice

i got sixteen tracks into the 30th anniversary version before wondering if i was into added material yet, which is high praise, honestly.

Tina Turner really rocked in the 80’s, really top stuff on this record, but the production has not hold up well

C'est bien !

A little slow for my taste

Solid album. Nice sound and great voice. Standout tracks: What's Love Got to Do with It I Can't Stand the Rain 1984 Ball of Confusion

Really good overall. Didn’t dislike any of it. I’d consider it a 3.5/5 overall but I’ll round up here due to not really having any complaints.

Dripping in 80s cheese but much better than I thought it was going to be

Love the energy and can feel that the personnel enjoyed making the music, esp. in Steel Claw

What’s love got to do with it

Excellent vocals and good music. Some standout songs that I enjoyed in the 80s and again.

Tina Turner is a referent. Here she has some hits as "What's love go to do with it" and "Private dancer".

There is a huge laundry list of artists on this one. Also 4 different production teams? Tina's vocal delivery is POWER. What's Love Got To Do With It is a killer sad song. Can't Stand The Rain has that horns in a can sound, but it's only just on the verge of being too much. Let's Stay Together is a wild cover. Again, it borders on too much and I think crosses that line. Steel Claw is a raccous boogie. Though there is a lot of lyrically whiplash on this album. The Help! cover is not my favorite. The 1984 cover I think is spot on. So on balance I have no idea where to put this album. Will need to revisit this.

So unashamedly 80s and hits the mark because of this. Finally out of the shadow of (and trauma caused by Ike) Tina Turner shone on this album. So many hits, so many good songs. I'd forgotten the covers too. Tina really makes Let's Stay Together her own and manages to follow it with a just as good Bowie cover of 1984, a song I would never have pictured her performing. OK, I'm not a fan of the Beatles cover nut I think that one is down to my taste. Only thing against sound is too polished in places which is at odds with Tina's raw vocals.

This album is very 80s by which I mean heavy on the synthesizer and drum machines in a very particular way. Having said that, I enjoyed this album more than I expected to. Tina Turner is a powerhouse of a vocalist and this album showcases her emotional range as well. ‘I can’t stand the rain’ is the standout track for me.

Kind of long, but there sure are some gems in there. Gotta respected the awesome punch in her voice. Favorite: I wrote a letter; I might have been queen; rock'n'roll widow.

4 Saf7at Men 3l Bouheli Mte3 Dostoevsky

80s diva, belting out hits without the benefit of auto-tune, but with the benefit of a lot of synthesizers, big hair and some saxophone cameos. I don't hate the album because I don't hate the sound of the 1980s.

Irresistable tunes.

This was huge when I was a kid and I have a sizable amount of nostalgia for the 80s pop sound in general - rife with synths and drum machines. Pop music from this era can come sometimes across as "soulless" because of it's tendency to be rather clean and polished but that is impossible in the hands of Tina Turner. Her imminently soulful voice provides a powerful foil for the slick, synth dominated tracks, and I enjoy the contrast very much.

Lots of good in here. Not a regular listen kind of album, but a really good one

4, this was so good! I feel like I only think of What's Love Got to Do With It is all I think of with her but this album rocked.

Tell you what, this album had me in its mid-80s clutches for the entire thing - even through Help which I was sure I was gonna hate. But then... 1984. Hoo boy. But otherwise, I really enjoyed this. Probably a little because of nostalgia - it just sounds like the mall when I was 10. But still - enjoyed it.

I'm going to agree with the field on this one. I had zero interest in Tina or this kind of music at the time of this album's popularity and now I understand completely why it was so popular. It almost feels like a Bruce Springsteen record to me, at times. (Looking at you "Steel Claw.") Or maybe his album's feel like Tina's? I don't know. Chicken and the egg. Anyway, "1984" is a really terrible way to end an album that otherwise far exceeded my expectations. Who let that song make it to press??

Tina's solo revival was classic 80s!

90. Private Dancer - Tina Turner 17 tracks. I really enjoyed this, (and some of her other stuff it took me to even more), but I also prefer her Rocky side rather her Soulful stuff. Have listened to this album a few times over last few days. Better Be Good to Me is EPIC!!! 4/5

teenta turnter. fun 80s pop. one star deducted because there's no reason for the title track to be that long.

I would have hated this when I was a teenager, kind of enjoyed it now. One of the songs I thought had a bit of Nutbush City Limits about it

Ok so it's a pretty good selection of covers like I can't stNd the rain and let's stay together, however they do show the limitations of her vocal range, but that doesn't bother me at all un fact I find it endearing...you always recognize a Tina Turner performance. And when Tina rocks, like in better be good to me, she takes a backseat to no one; man or woman.4 🌟

i mean the album cover says no but the music says yes

Actually a good album and enjoyed it far more than I would have ever expected. Its pure 80s but still listenable today. Apart from the Help cover which overstayed its welcome, all the songs were of great quality. It did get a bit tiring when the last couple came on but apart from that really happy with this.

This is a classic. Not perfect, but there are some absolute bangers in this.

Mis favoritas: What's love got to do with it I can't stand the rain Private dancer Let's stay together

Not my cup of tea

I thought this would be another case where the lead single would be the only good track, followed by a series of bad covers and other songs written by conflicting writers. But no, the production is great, busy sound as the 80s is known for, but combines post-disco with jazz and soft rock to make something soulful yet danceable, accessible for all audiences. First 6 tracks are perfect. The covers are mixed. The Peebles and Al Green covers are amazing and don't sound off with Turner's style, and you might be able to convince me they were originally intended for the era had I not heard the originals before. The Bowie and Beatles covers I wasn't really impressed by, but the 1984 cover was a little cool if anything. Favorite tracks: What's Love Got to Do With It, Private Dancer, Let's Stay Together

The height of 80s slick production contrasts perfectly with her powerful voice. I wasn't keen on the covers though.

Has a bunch of greats from Tina Turner. Just not my scene.

Gravelly voice? Check. Bucket load of synth? Check. One of the biggest albums of the 80s? Check.

Unique Voice. Great '80s sound.

Fun 80s Tina Turner ROMP

I knew most of the songs from my youth, but I hadn't heard many of the covers. The Beatles cover was great.

Very 80s, excellent pop and rock. Tina Turner was on fire!

It's Super Groovy. She has a lot of vibrato. Some of the lyrics were kinda jarring.

80s as shit, liked 'Help!' ofc - fun times!

Goed album

Good beats and lyrics! Can only listen to so much pining though. 7

Loses steam in the second half but this has some bangers on it

Good! Great hits! Check versions

One of greatest comebacks of all time. And an amazing 80s rock record.

Quite cheesy but good!

Decent music but kinda slow-paced. 7

Great album! Remember seeing watching many of the videos o MTV.

Never listened to Tina much, Very good album.

Tres bon album. Un classique 4.5*

Rock goddess

Never dug into her stuff too much. Really enjoyed it!

Great album, all the hits, and found some samples to other songs I didn’t know were a thing.

Very nice Album. I have listened to it a lot.

fun one. interesting takes on some classic tracks. fav track: let's stay together

Tolle Stimme, Disco funk??

I Can't Stand the Rain!

Many bops on this shit. Good to workout to, very groovy and picks up ur mood for sure

Good pop album with an edge from a legendary artist with a unique voice. Despite this not being my personal favorite genre and only steel claw popped out as a great song i liked, it was an overall good album that deserves its rating

Very nice.

Näitä klassikoita kuunteli mielellään.

6/11 Incredible songstress over classic 80's production. Standout Tracks: I Might Have Been Queen, Show Some Respect, I Can't Stand the Rain, Steel Claw

Classic 80s pop rock. Very mid.

j'aurai aime mettre 3,5 super ambiance ceci dit

This was enjoyable enough, but the amount of filler on this album stops it getting a 4/5

Packed with recognisable tunes. I'm not a great fan of her sound but she can certainly deliver good rocky tunes.

i love the 80s, i love Tina, but this was just SOOOOOOOO 80s.

Longo demais, dói a cabeça. 3/5

Hard to argue about this album being in this list. Personally, not a big fan, but can't deny the strong personality in her singing, and a couple of well recognized hits. 6/10

Private Dancer is pretty fascinating. On one hand, Tina Turner’s voice is just incredible, you can really hear all the grit and soul she put into her comeback. When she nails classics like "What's Love Got to Do with It" or that title track, it’s easy to see why she’s a legend, she sounds so powerful and effortless at the same time. But man, that 80s production is rough. There’s so much cheesy synth, thin sounding drums, and those dated guitar solos that honestly hold her back. The covers of "Help!" and "1984" feel super overly produced and just don't fit. I’ve got nothing but respect for Tina and the massive success she had with this, but while her voice is totally timeless, the rest of the album sounds like a bit plastic.

Not as good as I expected it to be just from seeing it was a Tina Turner album - I guess the studio production and general 80s sound take away from the more soulful stuff she's most known for a bit. Still, very solid!

HMMM. While it’s not really my thing, and while her voice gets a little overpowering at times, I did appreciate how much effort she put into this album. I mean she put her whole soul into some of these songs. Some really cool instrumentals in here also.

This woman has an immense amount of swag. The cover of Al Green's Let's Stay Together with Heaven 17 production really shouldn't work as well as it does!! It's not quite an album I'd return to, but damn if she didn't have me jamming along the ride. Standouts: I Might Have Been Queen • Show Some Respect • Private Dancer • Let's Stay Together

This is alright. I know the hits, but overall this is somewhat forgettable.

Great voice. A little too poppy. But I did think it was really interesting that the help cover was so unique that I didn’t even realize until like over half way thru. Just zoned out I guess. I also liked the 1984 cover

What's Love Got To Do With It

Was fine

Not much beats belting out WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?! Peak 80s production paired with some incredible vocal rizz. Corny but magical.

A well known name and several recognized hits. No doubt a good album, but not necessarily a personal favorite. Had never heard her rendition of The Beatles’ “Help” and didn’t love it, but could appreciate her cover of David Bowie’s “1984” (one of my favs) better.

She's great Tina! Love me some ike and tina turner more tho. Some tunes on here Let's stay together makes me think of marsellus Wallace who i admire a lot. Show me some respect, I cant stand the rain are good and obviously what's love got to do with it is an 80s classic. Always wanted Tina for legend slot at glasto she would smashed it....3.5 this!

Well put together and beautifully sung, but goodness gracious it's quite long.

Man the production is truly incredible for 1984. Wow. But I must say her vocals are just not good even in the big hit her voice is so shrill. If the production wasn’t top tier this would be a laughable album.

Very conflicted on this. Each “wow” moment is near a “yikes” moment. Loved some parts, hated others. I don’t know if it’s just her voice or bad production, but she sounds very shrill and dry and it’s grating at times. All the backing tracks and backup vocals are fantastic though. It’s also definitely far too long.

great comeback album. lot of high energy songs in this record. Favorite track: what's love got to do with it other picks: private dancer, better be good to me

Tina's a queen and this isn't a bad album, just not good enough to get over 3.4

„What's Love Got to Do with It" wurde ihr erster Nummer-eins-Hit in den USA; „Better Be Good to Me" und das titelgebende „Private Dancer", geschrieben von Mark Knopfler, zeigen die Spannbreite zwischen hartem Rock und melancholischer Langsamkeit.

Me gusta mucho una canción de este disco: What's Love Got To Do With It?, sin embargo, el resto del álbum no me convenció del todo.

Não esperava o cover de Help!

It's fine. Her voice is fine, but she sounds like an 80 year old smoker singimg about being my private dancer. No thanks, Grandma.

Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

shocked by the number of covers on this, and while better be good to me is the clear star of this album, everything else was a little lacking.

I have to confess that up until now I have never listened to a whole Tina Turner album. I know the hits, of course, but I can't really think of any time in my life when I would have thought 'what I really need now is an entire Tina Turner record'. I would imagine this is going to be ultimate 80s soft rock/pop in every way which is not a great thing... So yes, it is incredibly 80s in the most predictable way. Cheese oozing out of the speakers. It's also kind of boring. I mean she has a great voice, great passion in the songs. But they all just kind of fall flat for me. I mean I didn't expect to be changed into a Tina Turner superfan after one listen but I did expect a little more. Other than her voice, there isn't really anything that stands out on this album at all. It's all just kind of droning in the background. I suppose there are some good guitar parts here and there, albeit drenched in 80s cave reverb. Probably a one and done for me. Generous 3/5.

6/10 Best songs: Show Some Respect, 1984 I don't know why, but every single song feels 10 minutes long, even when they're nowhere close. Although none of the songs are bad, it gets a bit much. The album has that very 80s sound - at times verging on easy listening, which doesn't match well with Tina's voice - so it sounds quite dated. I dunno. Not bad, but I probably would've liked it better in the 80s.

While Tina's voice is undeniably incredible, on its own it wasn't enough to Turner me into a fan

This is so 80's it hurts. There's even a song called 1984. Overall there's a good mix of songs. Her singing is soulful and strong but I didn't especially enjoy the covers (both good songs I just prefer the originals). Private Dancer is an interesting comment on strippers. She expresses the human sadness of it without being judgy about it. Better Be Good to Me stands out. It's my favorite song on this album. I feel like the first half of the album was better than the last.

Absolutely hated that cover of Help

Veldig mye bra. 3-4

Instrument in what's love got to do also banger song Holy fucking songs tho

Favorite Track: What's Love Got to Do with It

Love Tina's comeback story and she is certainly talented just a little too "pop" for my taste. Some nice tunes though

What a powerhouse!

So stuck in the 80s that I took off my headphones and my hair was feathered - dripping with velvety sax, corny synth, and tinny electric drums. Still, I was picking up what it was putting down and taking it as something from 1984 (rather than like, a ~timeless album~ woOOooo) it's a solid, consistent piece. Ike really did a number on her, though, and it shows here. Whatever, she's a star with a unique voice. My 3 year old gave this one a thumbs up, but also insisted on repeatedly asking (ever more incredulously each time I answered) "is this a boy or a girl singing?" Is the riff from "Better Be Good To Me" the same as the Pretenders' "Tattooed Love Boys?"

What can I say, I find 80's music production charming.

Pretty strong album from Tina Turner. A handful of songs remain timeless hits, lead by What's Love Got To Do With It. I didn't realize that so many songs on this album are covers, nor that Mark Knopfler was the writer of the title track. Overall it's a great mix pop, soul and R&B from Tina. 3.22 stars

I didn't like the 80's vibe to some of the music. I did, however, love her voice. The woman could sing. Private Dancer, Better Be Good To Me and What's love Got To Do With it are all worth a listen.

This is something only Tina Turner can deliver. It's very very 80's in songwriting and production, but definitely her. Going from the title track into a version of "Let's Stay Together?" Pretty good.

Best Song: Steel Claw This was part of the Tina Turner resurgance and was a HUGE deal in 1984. A 9-year-old me remembers people loving this album. I'm not gonna yuck anyone's yum, but this didn't do anything for me. It was ok but not my thing and I was too young to enjoy any nostalgia that may come with it. 3/5.

not something i would choose to listen to again, but funky and easy to listen to

Tina is never a 3. Except she is. Not because any song is a 3 but because they are either a 1 or a 5. I love some of it and I loath some of it. If we had decimals, I'd probably go 2.75. Round it up, because she is a bleeping legend. 3.0

Maybe not my cup of tea, but you have to acknowledge the power of an undeniable rock star.

This wasn't my thing. I've never listened to a Tina Turner album, I know her hits, and yes there's one on here but as a whole, it just didn't do it for me. I found the title track lacking.

80's pop, powerful voice

Not really my style but I obviously love "What's love got to do with it" 💃💃💃

The songwriting here is decent and Turner's gritty and committed vocal performance coupled with the mechanical sheen of the mostly synthetic backing tracks make for an effective combination. Not an exceptional or groundbreaking album but a solid one nonetheless.

It was fine, nothing I'd write home about

She's a queen.

Highlights: I Might Have Been Queen, What's Love Got to Do with It, Show Some Respect, I Can't Stand the Rain, Let's Stay Together, 1984

On one hand Tina Turner has a great voice. On the other hand a lot of these songs are boring.

i have no opinion on this its fine ig jus saw the cat on the cover and now i like it little more

It was weird to listen to this and hear some newer artists she's influenced. Specifically, Lady Gaga. Very dated in sound, tho. 3/5

What a voice. The hits are hits. Not my genre, but I remember what's love got to do with it on the radio.

low 3.

"I Might Have Been Queen" might be the utter distillation of the 80's pop sound. Every snare sounds like it's heading for the stratosphere. Jangly guitar tones. And then in the middle of all this mess, there's Tina, singing her damned heart out. Some good stuff here, but largely for nostalgia. I'm glad that she left ol' Ike behind before she put this together, but I miss the actual soul. This was inescapable when I was in high school.

It's OK.

Tina Turner had an amazing voice. I had heard the hits. This is one of those albums that I'm not going out of my way to listen to, but I'm glad I've heard the whole thing. Yup, will admit, Tina Turner was bad as fuck.

ha zerst denkt sie singt it might have been queen über d band. ähm. coole song irgendwie aber au weirdi lyrics und chraaank cheesy. whats love got to do with it kenni latürnlich. finds witzig wie de song mega laud back isch aber sie beltet mega. kontrast wo funktioniert aber. gitarre isch geil, scho ufem letste. wer spieeelt? ok s sind irgendwie vier produzente wo immer es paar tracks gmacht hend ufem album mit jewiils ere komplett ustuuschte band. lustig. i cant stand the rain recht geil. mega synthi time. aber die hyper-80er-ification nimmt au chli lebe us de songs findi. wow private dancer isch meeega en dire straits song. und isch au chli weniger hyper synthi-production. s sind au d dire straits ohni de mark knopfler wo spieled. yes i enjoy coole song, sie singten geil cool ja nice. aaah lets stay together halt en classic aber bringts de covere? fazit: nöd unbedingt. better be good to me fangt guet ah. big 80er drums aber au cooli giti.

"I'm a new pair of eyes every time I am born And original mind because I just died But I'm scanning the horizon for someone recognizing That I might've been queen For every sun that sets, there is a new one dawning "For every empire crushed, there is a brand new nation Let the waters rise, I have ridden each tide From the gates of the city where the firstborn died" That is a metal way of opening an album. The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to it, unfortunately, but it's still pretty good. The opening track with the above lyrics, "I Might Have Been Queen" is an 80s banger. "What's Love Got To Do With It?", "Private Dancer" and "Better Be Good To Me" are solid radio friendly earworms, "Steel Claw" and "1984" are Tina doing her version of hard rock and it's hard to mess up "Let's Stay Together." The rest of the tracks aren't as good, including a cover of "Can't Stand The Rain" which is too laden with 80s synths and drum machines and a sloggy version of the Beatles "Help" but overall, this was better than I thought it would be.

I love Tina Turner and enjoyed listening to this. Some of it hasn’t aged that well (like the title track). The production is super eighties and a little too much for. Her voice is raspy and beautiful. The stand out for me was her cover of Ann Peebles’ I can’t stand the rain, which i had to immediately listen to three more times.

Surprisingly good. not my usual kettle of fish but a quality album, with some cool covers in there, like Bowies 1984 and Pebbles I can't stand the rain

to put it simply, this record is such a vibe. i wasn’t really familiar with much of tina’s work, but i really do understand why she is such an icon. the listening experience is like transcending to a different decade and is filled with so much power and raw emotion. each track is bursting with character and storytelling, it’s so dramatic (in the most positive way possible)

another case of this is objectively excellent stuff but just not my taste. The covers were not her strongest work admittedly but she is a powerhouse

More of a snoozer than I expected. Still enjoyable though.

Not bad for a pop production. Some iconic songs on here, mostly helped by bringing in soul/R&B vibes. It even had a little bit of rock mixed in, which at its best felt like a Springsteen/Motley Crue mix and at its worst felt like Meatloaf. The album was really carried by Turner's voice (which is to be expected from a solo album, I guess), but there really is no hiding that this is an 80s record. Pretty crazy how identifiable the decade is in its sound. Notable negatives for me were the covers, with 1984 being my least favorite track. It was worsened by Turner not writing any of the songs on the album herself. That's often a main problem I have with these pop albums. Much like those others, this one feels a bit too manufactured for me. Gonna take away a few points for that. As a whole, I'd say this was fine-to-good. I enjoyed parts of this album, mainly the recognizable songs. But the rest weren't all that impressive to me. Not sure I'll come back to this one other than to revisit the few songs I liked. Overall: 2.8/5

it was fine. i dont think i'll listen again. but most of the songs were decent.

muy bien pero muy largo

I might Have Been Queen is not getting this album off to a good start, too new wave-y. She has a sexy voice. She's like R&B Kathleen Turner. This is like classic 60s Tina Turner mixed with new wave 80s Thunderdome Tina Turner...the songs have alternated so far and are a classic reminder that new wave music sucks. Missy Elliot's favorite Tina Turner song. Better Be Good to Me is a great pop song. I hate when there's no way to find the original album release on streaming. Brittany Howard sounds like Tina Turner in some songs, that's a flattering comparison for both of them. This cover of Let's Stay Together feels unnecessary. The new wave songs could be the soundtrack to a terrible 80s movie. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Private Dancer is the greatest song about strippers ever.

At first it just sounded like Kiss with a better singer, but it kicks on after about 4 songs to a more well rounded album. Thank you bastille for covering the title track, you did it better kings

Her style is nice and her voice is strong, but it's all so aggressively 80's

Classic album from my youth….it was nice to listen to this again now, not sure that I would ever choose to listen to it but the nostalgia factor was cool. 2.5

I enjoyed this lucky dip of genres and styles despite the aggressively 80s backing music.

can’t handle this much tina in one go

Tina's vocals are immense on this solid pop-rock album. The tracks are rather repetitive, and the title track is especially egregious.

My 80s hate can wait. This album has a few great moments. Love seeing an artist rebirth at 45 years old I love the way Turners voice fits this genre. The covers are really solid too. I Cant Stand The Rain has been covered at least 2 times on our journey. The Help cover sounded similar to Joe Cockers. All that said, there are a few BAD songs on here. Show Some Respect was a joke 😂 Favorites: whats love, better be good to me, lets stay together

Love her down and there are good songs on this album, its just not really my vibe hahah I feel the vibe. I see why people love, but my love just goes to a few of her songs. Also the album is so long lmao and it all sounds sooo similar

I'm young. I never listened to Tina Turner's songs besides the most commercial ones. Expected this to feel like the 80s and it does, feels old, but Tina's performance is grappin and the synths are kinda cool. Full on energetic from top to bottom.

Highlights: I Might Have Been Queen, What's Love Got to Do with It, Show Some Respect, I Can't Stand the Rain, Private Dancer It started strong with a bunch of club friendly tracks which I really liked. Yeah, they did sound like stereotypical 80s pop, but I like that style. The hits are definitely overplayed so I kinda liked some of the lesser known tracks from the first half a bit more. Then the record took a nosedive at Let's Stay Together. She butchered that track and I got worried that all the other covers are gonna suck too. The following tracks didn't fix that sentiment. I was really disappointed with the monotonous take on Help. I checked the anniversary release and saw that there were even more omitted covers. I have to say that there were some better decisions to be made about the final selection of the covers... For instance I really liked Ball of Confusion and the Prince cover. They are a better fit for the pop energy of the first half of the record. Overall I won't be revisiting the record as a while, but the highlights will remain in rotation on all sorts of 80s focused playlists.

The whole Tina Turner story is amazing. I was a teenage through this period, when she went from 'aging has been' to 'pop/rock royalty'. Nobody deserved it more, she had been through wars (almost literally) for decades. She also has a voice that can smooth the edges off granite, in a good way, and oozes charm, warmth and character! The good tracks are What's Love Got To Do With It, Private Dancer and the covers of Let's Stay Together, I Can't Stand The Rain. The rest of the tracks are, sadly, instantly forgettable.

Too long. Good songs but an hour and a half is insane. Cut the album in half and it would be amazing.

pretty fun and an iconic 80's pop album. she's got a cool as hell voice and the instrumentation SCREAM 80's in a nice way.

I will start this review by saying that she is a complete icon. Her sound is instantly recognisable. Unlike a lot of people, I actually really appreciate the production, as I'm a fan of the mainstream synth pop sound. I feel like there can be too much of her, as her powerful voice can be a tad much for me. Enjoyable listen though.

I never could get into this. Tina is an amazing artist but this is not my thing.

Good album, very listenable, just would never listen to it casually by myself. Still looking for an album that I well and truly gravitate towards.

Feels a bit dated. Maybe heard it to much when I was young.

Golden

Tina’s got a greatest of pipes. Musically not the best though Rain and Dancer are great tracks. Dancer stands out as being different from the rest, then you find out Mark Knopfler wrote it and it all makes sense

Her fifth album. Pop / Rock. What a voice ! Tina Turner's vocals are about as powerful and bold as you can get. The 80s production on this, by contrast, is pretty fucking awful. Even What's Love Got To Do With It is ruined by the production. Cliche 80s sounds and beats. The 3 that I am giving this album is all down to Tina Turner's voice.

Very 80s powerbalads but better than I expected.

This was just so painfully ’80s. That’s just my personal taste, though, so I won’t be too harsh. Objectively, it wasn’t bad at all, and Turner’s voice is great.

One of the albums I most identify with the background sound of my childhood (along with Thunderdome).

Not a bad album, just one I don't have much interest in

Favorite Track: What’s Love Got to Do with It

It didn’t rlly stand out to me too much but I did like some of the songs

Didn't feel it, these kind of production isn't my cup of tea

Tina’s voice is great the problem is the music sounds like a parody of itself. Terrible synths.

Tops 3: I can't stand the rain Better be good to me Help

I really like the instrumentals but I don't love her voice. Songs I saved: Show some respect Steel claw

Pretty solid. Can see why she was one of the big ones of the era.
