Reviews (page 11 of 13)

It was okay - Funky, kinda experimental at times, and very 80s. However I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It's very horny, long and repetitive. Is this just meant to be a sex album? It started off great but just sort of tuned itself out into the realm of background music. Not my favourite Prince album. Favourite: 1999

I'm usually a prude, but I do have to admit I enjoy the presentation of this album. It's pretty openly sexual, but it's more in a fun way than a threatening way, at least from what I picked up. The music was pretty good too. My issue was the length. If these songs were shorter, I could see this being a 4, but it's hard to ignore the very long songs that bog the album down for me towards the middle. I'm not sure if I'll like either of the Prince albums more, but I'd say this was a nice introduction. My favourite song was All the Critics Love U in New York.

That was... intense... "Soft" version of Biggie Smalls, judging by lyrics. For 1982, it's a bold statement.

Hard to rate - some hits but overall I'm not really into this.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, prince is just legendary in every regard, even though this is something I couldn’t listen to casually, his talent and attention to detail is second to none Favourite song: Track 1 - 1999

prince is an amazing talent. he plays all of the instruments on his albums and writes all of the songs. while the albums are certainly a showcase for his musicianship, his lyrics are a little redundant. we get it, you like sex. if the lyrical content was on par with the musical content, it would be four stars. however, three stars it is.

Some fun songs, but an hour of Prince is kind of tough.

I really liked the first song (1999) but the rest of them were just ok. I felt like they were too long. Got a really 70s dance vibe from them.

Meh it had a nice groove but I didn’t really vibe with the lyrics.

made me wanna dance. i likey

I will listen

My fat fingers hit 4 yesterday instead of 3. Wish there was an “are you sure?”Prompt. Anyway: This album is okay. I like the little red corvette song. Prince is a great musician and has an iconic voice. His guitar solos and bass lines are fun. Some of his lyrics in this album, and his attitude, cleared my sinuses. He is sassy. That said, there was some odd production decisions here. Some of the songs jam on and on with not much direction. Sometimes the listener is drawn to hear a woman yelling “Help me!!”, some very suggestive moaning, a child laughing, or an elephant noise. These small bits were obviously added after the fact and Prince probably put his foot down hard on these odd creative choices. All the critics love U in New York has Prince making a call over two-way radio about masturbating. Over and out!

-a PRINCE ALBUM!!!!! how EXCITING!!!!! -oh this is GROOVY i dig it -love that the first song is the title track -would you believe me if i told you this is my FIRST PRINCE ALBUM!!!!!! (hence the reason im doing this album generator thing, expanding my music knowledge) -little red corvette is a full slay -favorites: D.M.S.R, -like how can you not dance to dmsr come on now -me hearing the l

The vocals on International Lover, holy shit.

Just random songs thrown into an "album". Still liked most of the songs though

Apart from the singles, there was nothing that caught my attention - just stereotypical 'Prince by numbers' - lots of elements that he later put together in a different order to make better songs.

The "1" on the on the cover art is totally a dick tip. I've just never been able to get into Prince. He's enjoyable enough. He has his own sound, which I always appreciate, but there's just something that turns me off. That said, I don't hate it, and I get why it's on the list.

I still feel like I don't really "get" Prince. I appreciate that it was a different time and that he pushed boundaries that needed to be pushed, etc. He was also obviously a fantastic musician. But I find a full album of his hard to get through. There several songs on here that are way too long and probably a bit too self indulgent. I also find the production and mixing is bad in places, sometime the vocals are somewhat buried and the bass is way too loud ( or treble way too high?). Having said that though, the first 3 songs are absolute classics, and the album definitely deserves a spot in this list. Just maybe not in my heart!

Fun, quirky sound. Lots of over-long songs that felt more like jams. Sometimes the quirkiness went a little too far into weird as well, though I wasn't totally negative on that. Overall a very interesting album from a great talent, although I was only really into a few songs. Best song: 1999

Some real bangers on here, but the rest of the album is kind of fluff

I can see why it was so massive at the time. Easy listen.

It's a'ight

Alku on discoo mistä pidän, mutta vetelöytyy loppuun

not my kinda thing but i wouldn't be mad if someone put it on

Gonna be honest a lot of these songs tripped me out. But I was also high so. Idk it's a classic, just not my style. 7/10.

Many of the lyrics and highly repetitive elements to the songs detract from the listening experience for me. The instrumental elements are enjoyable to listen to, particularly the less repetitive parts, and the artist's technical talents and passion are apparent. Bottom songs: let's pretend we're married, all the critics love you in new york

Good but I think I like other prince songs more

Really fun sexy 80s funk! Super cool and sophisticated. Love the idea of an apocalypse-anticipating album and all of the freedom and frivolity that brings if you think you're experiencing the last few years of existence. Not 100% catchy enough for me or maybe I just had album reviewing fatigue today from trying to catch up!?

I thought this was great! Preferred it to the other one. And so party!!

Ahhhh, I just don't get Prince. It's not that it's bad, it just doesn't seem anything special to me at all. Sorry!

not a fan, but i appreciate his artistry. better than 98% of pop crap.

Sounded a lot like what I imagined a Prince album would sound like. Some fun, funky hits. But also a few that last forever, and a few that sounded like Prince was definitely trying to make a move on me.

Ginormous in talent, if not in stature. I was fully on board for the first half hour and then my interest dropped like a stone. The singles are great, the musical treatises bored me senseless. Sorry, Prince. I’m obviously having a bad day. Something definitely did not compute. But for 1999 alone you’re a star.

When Little Red Corvette was popular I knew it had something to do with sex but didn’t know exactly what. I was pretty naive at 14. I thought I’d have a hard time deciding whether to rate this album a 4 or a 5 but it turns out that, as much as I like a bunch of the songs, the album falls a bit short.

Hearing this one made me appreciate Purple Rain more. This one's fun and all, and I have fond memories of hearing "Delirious" when it was the fresh hot single and thinking it was quirky and cool, but this album felt very slight compared to Purple Rain in terms of its arrangements. Also, every song lasted way too long. Apart from the singles, I really liked "All the Critics Love U In NY."

He had me with a couple of classic bangers early doors, some irresistible, sexy grooves and an array of forward-thinking, electrified sounds. He lost me by dragging it all out for so long that the bangers dried up, the grooves became resistible (albeit still sexy), and the sounds became old hat by the time the song ended.

some songs are a bit long for 21st century ears, but great album nevertheless

I liked this one more than Purple Rain 3/5

He's obviously a musical genius - but just not my thing... I'm sure there'll be another 7 Prince albums in this list. Hoping one of them will be Batman.

Man, this album starts off with a bang but fizzles a little.

3 And in comes a Prince album, which I imagine will probably be one of the quickest 5s my Dad gives out, and his third overall. I know this is one of his all-time favorites, and while it provides me with wonderful memories of home and my childhood, for me it’s no Purple Rain. Comparatively, this one has a bit too much of an 80s pop-driven sound for my taste, and it just feels a little safer and less experimental than his later work. The title track is enjoyable, but honestly, if not for the vocals, it sounds like it could be a Michael Jackson song. From there, Little Red Corvette is a fantastic tune, though I've always thought the production feels a little off on it. Like, it almost sounds like the audio is compressed? Not sure what happened there, but it’s kind of a shame since the song is so great otherwise. I didn’t recognize much of the album beyond that (even though I’m sure it was probably on in the background numerous times throughout my youth), but I found it pretty hit or miss. Delirious in particular I found a bit annoying musically, but then Let’s Pretend We’re Married was a fun return to form with a great beat to it. From there, it’s a lot of the over-sexualized funk and dance pop that Prince is known for, but they’re mostly all composed creatively enough that you don’t notice the majority are 6+ minutes long. Fun vibes all around, but I don’t think it’s the most diverse offering of Prince’s output - his best was yet to come. Still, it makes me think of my Dad, so I couldn't go any lower than a 3.

vibers

Toes the line between being superb and ridiculous. I've seen the man live, he was amazing - but the longeurs of his recorded output can sometimes be a bit wearing. Still, side one of the original album - '1999', 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Delirious' - is a bit special

One of the most over rated artists, in my opinion.

Ibland obehagligt, ibland mycket trivsamt men alltid imponerande.

Deadly opening tracks, Delirious is unreal. But could have done without all the female screaming and sex noises towards the end.

I appreciate it, its significance, but it doesn't really move me

Mehr 80er geht kaum.

Groovy stuff, I wasn't in the mood for it but I could see myself having a good time with it in the right situation

Started really strong then just became background music

This album didn’t do anything for me. I’ve never been a fan of songs with drum machines styling.

Ok did not love or hate it

There's a reason people only know the first two tracks. There are some great parts, but I'm really surprised how much this didn't move me. Am I too corp???? Wanna give it two stars, but it's Prince! Is this one of those albums I really need to listen to all the way more than once? Ended strong, so I'll give it three stars, mostly out of guilt.

Some decent tracks

This was not really for me. It wasn't bad, I just found it kind or boring.

Prince is not my favourite Artist, but it still does not take away from some of the good songs on the Album.

Not a big fan, but have a lot of respect

This album was incredibly tedious at times. Some of these tracks certainly felt like butter over too much bread. Luckily, there were enough slices here, with tasty enough butter, to still keep it good.

Cocaine ruined a lot of albums by making songs that are 9 minutes long when they really should be 3-5. Other than that, a lot of good music here.

A really good pop album from a time when there weren’t a lot of good pop albums

So so sexual, but definitely groovy

listened to again an 80's bonafide classic

I have incredible respect for prince as an artist but I find this a bit too 80's pop for my tastes. Of course there are a few bangers, namely the title track. And I absolutely love the arrangements on the whole album, its dense and interesting and the range of instrumentation and samples are great. Similarly the production could be from 2022, not 1982 and you wouldn't bat an eye. I'm just not the biggest fan of how the whole package ends up coming together.

80s pop with tons of twists, great instrumentation, and arrangements. Tons of over the top interpretations, screams and moaning.

Prince double album when he was in his prime. What do we think? Some of the finest synths of the time. Starting with his third album, Dirty Mind, Prince had pioneered a subgenre of funk known as the Minneapolis Sound which was very similar to much of the synth-focused funk at the time, but included a much glossier production that would come to define the sound of 80's pop. That's right, my biggest musical gripe could be attributed to none other than Prince. The boring, plastic production of the 80's has ruined many a record for me, but the same could not be said about 1999. To call this album boring would be a sin. Lots of great stuff on the first LP. I think Prince had a complete vision of a sort of comedown on the second LP but 80's ballads will never do anything for me, even if they're from Prince. Free, in particular, is the most skippable song on here. Lady Cab Driver helps save the momentum for the latter half, but for a double album I can't help but feel that 1999 is a great album that gets watered down. I am also extra critical of double albums anyway, so I was going to be hard on 1999 anyway.

lil long

For me, Prince is best listened to in small doses; I like only a couple of songs (the usual suspects: Purple Rain, Kiss, ...). The title song and maybe Little Red Corvette fits the bill, and altogether I prefer this album to, say, Sign 'O' The Times, but it stays a mixed bag for me. 2.5/5

Classic album, as funky as you expect from Prince. I can enjoy it but I would not put it on myself.

Sexy and fun.

There are a few standout tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette and D.M.S.R. But it’s not his best and some of it drags

Two great songs and then rest sounds too dated and inconsistent. 2.5 rounded up to 3

v 80s?

It was ok. Not bad, pretty catchy, but not exactly mind-blowing.

3/5 music just was not for me.

Full sintes

Enjoyable enough, but I wouldn’t pick it to put on

Felt like a party in 1999

Probably a great album, I'm just not that into Prince. It all feels like a mid 80s party.

Dance. Music. Sex. Romance. Starts of with much passion, then lags a bit, losing interest, then thrusts up the rhythm and pace again, we're back in the game, then reaching an elephant sounding climax, we're left feeling a little deflated towards the end... Yes, we've definitely just had sex with Prince!

Banger, Banger, Banger, Meh, Meh, Meh, Meh, Meh, Meh, Meh, Meh.

Why is there another super gross Prince song out there? What is the hype. The 2 songs from the radio? Solid. Otherwise meh.

1999 and LRC are amazing songs. I'm sure a lot of it is nostalgia, because nothing else on this album is good. But all you need are 2 legs to stand, so I have to give it 3 stars.

i can see why it is on the list but its not huge for me

Terrible 2nd half

Some hits at start but 2nd half is poor.

It's good pop Prince, but overall not his greatest work. I'm also not the biggest Prince fan so...

Prince was funky and all, but even this funky record is way inferior to e.g. Sly and Parliament. DMSR is best song he ever did in my opinion, so a 3

Fun and groovy

The title track and Little Red Corvette are both fantastic but nothing else really jumped out at me. This was quite anticlimactic to listen to after Sign o' the Times, which felt a lot more consistent despite being 10ish minutes longer This album really suffers from having quite a few songs that last far longer than they should, and just doesn't have strong enough songs to stick out after the iconic one-two openers

A lot of corny 80s sounds but classic Prince. He shows off just enough and is restrained throughout . Prince must have been super horny while making this one. THIS GUY HAS LOTS OF SEX it seems. Pretty incredible work for a 22yr old Favorite Track: 1999, Something in the Water, Lady Cab Driver

I’m of the opinion there are no bad Prince albums, but this one certainly isn’t my favourite. It’s starts out strong but becomes a little ho-hum (for Prince) midway through.

Matig album

Album started strong with the first three songs but afterwards fell off. The songs seemed artificially stretched by so la la instrumentals and lots of talking/whispering and overall quality went down

Trzy etapy są w albumie: 1. Przychodzimy na imprezę, muzyka, szklanki, hulanki. 2. Trochę przechwalania się o samochodach, gadka szmatka żeby loszkę ugadać. 3.

An enjoyable album that is upbeat, unique, and funky. Prince shows his ability to be a genius in this album. He also shows side for carrying things on that could’ve used some editing or cutting. The back half of this album drags a bit and the sex them of a few songs seemed unnecessary. Would still listen again and feel it’s about as good as sign o the times. 7.5/10

International Lover y

Fun. Great party album.

I’m lukewarm on it. The grooves are pretty fantastic but seem to just drag on for a little too long or are too repetitive. If I was dancing to it it’d probably be better but as a casual listen it’s a bit much. 6/10

To describe Prince’s lyrics on the '1999' LP as innuendo would be an understatement. In your end, yo, is more his speed. I mean his pockets are ‘full of horses, Trojan…’ Careful, there’s a lion in there, too, ‘and baby he’s ready to roar.’ Prince is ‘Delirious’ from the need for sex- there must be ‘Something in the Water’- and he’s after anyone, ‘Lady Cab Driver’(s), doesn’t matter. On ‘Let’s Pretend We’re Married,’ either he either grew weary of all the allusions or just flat ran out of illustrations: ‘I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth!’ I think I’ll pass, having known people infected with COVID who lost their ability to taste for weeks. That said, I wonder if it would be possible to fuck just the taste of kale out of my mouth? I might be up for that. But I digress. On second thought, no, this actually is all pertinent, as a simple look at the number ‘One’ on the cover art will clearly reveal. Prince’s libido was green light go in 1982. Musically, all the synthesizers and drum machines take the listener right back to the early 1980s, a time period of pop music I unfortunately don’t particularly care for. The electro funk of ‘Something in the Water,’ despite some great vocals, did not compute with this listener. One of Prince’s most talented features, his guitar soloing, is mostly absent, either buried in the mix or over bridled (‘Free,’ ie); and, alas, that’s a horse that really should be set free to gallop. Finally, the new wave/funk/rockabilly hybrid on ‘Delirious’ is an example of flavors that just don’t go well together. Anchovies and orange marmalade in a taco shell. While I am a fan of Prince, generally, '1999' is a recording incompatible with the other tunes currently playing in my blue Toyota, which is for the best. Along with wild girls, Red Corvettes also tend to attract too much attention from Law Enforcement.

Starts out really strong but weakens towards the end.

Just like Prince to release an LP 17 years ahead of its eponymic title, only for it to still sound as if it came right at the turn of the century. Not every track here is perfect and a few tend to drag on a bit longer than they have the melodic power to, but most are infectiously catchy across the board and are still listenable today (something that can't be said for most 80s music).

Ah the great Prince - some genius songs here but did not feel like his best album.

No denying his impressive talents, unfortunately his style of music just doesn't resonate with me. Little Red Corvette is a great song and there are a couple other good songs too but that's about it for me 3 🌟

Still hard for me to get into Prince.

Pure funky. Prince is not an artist that I specially like, though.

A true pop classic, and the opening 3 tracks is a hell of a sequence. I’m not too fussed about the rest of it, but what a start!

Not bad but some tracks are way too long

Soooo many layers on layers here! Overtly sexually explicit lyrics on top of synth-y funky instrumentation and odd little sound bites make for a very fun and experimental album. My one gripe is the huge volume difference found in the mix (at least from what I could hear in my car speakers) that made it actually kind of frustrating to listen to :/

Pros: - Songwriting is great and unique and fearless, like Prince. No one was like him and I don't think there will be many like him. - I bet if I was 18 in 1982 and I heard this come out I would be like "this is amazing". It's a great amalgamation of ideas and sounds in this unique Prince musical vernacular. - I do think that Prince leans a little toward maximalism in the production; there's so many instrumental layers of little guitar licks, synth licks, vocal "mm yea"'s and super processed vocal layers that all sound cool but at times can be a little annoying. Maybe it's just that this album is now 40 years old and it's age is showing. Overall I'm happy with the mix though. - It's fun music! Cons: - some mix choices are annoying Misc: - I wish I could hear the original mixes on a lot of these albums on spotify. It seems like the service mostly just has official remixes of these 30+ year old albums and they don't offer the original ones. Small gripe but that's for spotify / the record label and not with Prince. - I need to do a deep dive and see what songs Prince played guitar on. He's a legit shredder and I was always curious to see how much of the album songs he actually recorded the guitars for. - 1982 was an interesting time period for music production. New and immediate prevalence of synths meant that there were lots of questionable mix decisions being made and you can hear that across this album. "1999" hard panned to right ear warble synth is a little grating at times. "Let's Pretend we're married" - listen to the delay on the snare. interesting. can't tell if i love it or hate it. At 2:46 I swear you can hear a sneeze. - this album for me is a great reason why there should be more than 5 options/stars to vote for. This is around a 3.5 for me without context. It's a very solid album, and on a list of 1001 albums you have to hear, I would think of it as being a 3, so I'm going to give it a 3. I'm leaning more for a 3 instead of a 4 because the second half has tracks that tend to run on the same ideas.

I mean it's Prince, so it's technically brilliant. It's also twice as fucking long as it ever needed to be.

3, trodde inte det skulle vara så bra

As a single album four stars. As the first two tracks 5 stars. There are longeurs and his first 5-star piece would arrive next.

Definitely ahead of its time. However, I am just not a Prince fan. Idk what is wrong with me but I can’t get down to most of this. I enjoy the singles and the overall pop/r&b sensibilities but it just didn’t click for me, daug.

Didn't enjoy as much as I thought! Love prince but might need more time with the album, will listen again but it's very busy on a first listen

hard to beat the 1-2 of the first two tracks but this album just dragged on and on - too much of the same. couldn't really finish it

Some of the tracks are maybe stretched a little. The collection is hit and miss but they have something about them.

What a strange little man he is

I know it's an iconic album and, while I can appreciate that, it wasn't my thing back in high school when it came out and it's still not my thing now. There are a lot of things I like about the album, but there are a few things I can't get past: 1. Why do the songs have to be so long? 2. Prince is such a great guitar player, why can't he play a bit more guitar and a bit less on the synths? 3. I hate fake sounding drum machines. I know I'm in the minority on this one, but 3 stars.

How is Little Red Corvette the only song with an explicit flag?

Better as a live act

I do like Prince - he's got some fun and funky beats. I love that I can nearly see his face through the way that he sings. He's so entertaining! Only thing is it's a little too repetitive for my taste these days. Fun to go through these throwbacks though.

Oh well. *1999*. Released in 1982. If through this title, Prince wanted to predict music as it would sound seventeen years later, that's not exactly how everything turned out, is it? That minor grudge aside, it's hard to miss the carpe diem *concept* behind the album. *1999* is a record that wants you to have sex, because, hey, that's one of the best thing our short lives have to offer, is it not? It is also speaking from a cold war vantage point, hence the criticism of "politicians" found in some lyrics here and there, even if such quick statements might just be useful pretexts for more fucking (up, around, and well, just good old straight-up fucking itself). If the end of the world is coming soon, whether at the turn of the millenium or earlier, we'd better enjoy what's left of our lives and party *hard*, after all. This here is the bulk of Prince's *D.M.S.R* program (a track from the album that reads *Dance, Music, Sex, Romance*), an overall theme also nicely introduced in opener and legendary single "1999", where the Minneapolis sex-crazed, short-statured genius reminds us that anyone is "carrying a bomb' these days, nuclear or not, and that as a result, anyone can die in the next hour or the next minute. When U say it this way, Mr. Nelson, it indeed sounds like a good idea to take your sweet time and wallow in all those hedonistic long tracks celebrating love, lust, sex, romance and everything in between. The thing is, *long* does not necessarily equate *good*. At least when it comes to music, if you take my meaning. Wink, wink. And *this* here is exactly where *1999* falls short, ironically. Because as groundbreaking as the record was, both for Prince and for pop music at large (with all those dry synth-driven hits, Afrika-Bambatta-inspired dirges, lustful torch songs, rock digressions and moist-yet-minimalistic hard-funk forays), yes, in spite (or because) of all of *that*, there's a also a streak of self-indulgence running through *1999* which might possibly make it a difficult listen in 2022, no matter what critics or hardcore fans are raving about when they're mentionning the album today. "Let's Pretend We're Married" is a nice track, with a soundtrack it's easy to picture St Vincent writing a few decades later. But did it need to last for 7 minutes or so, no matter what crazy antics Prince is doing during the performance? Besides, cuts like "Automatic", "DMSR", "Lady Cab Driver", or "All the Critics Love U In New York" are not *that* good musically speaking in the first place. And most of them still run even far longer than 7 minutes. Or if they don't, they sound *as if they do*. Never a good sign when you're watching the clock while "doing it". The only exceptions to that overall issue are the first two tracks, and the fact that they are opening the album is not so much a blessing in disguise as it is a curse for the record's overall balance. "1999" is a bouncy masterpiece, and if you can't shake your rump to it, it means you're probably dead already. And "Little Red Corvette", Prince's first crossover hit to rock and mainstream charts in a long list of many, has *that* stellar chorus going for it. But after that early point, in terms of obvious hits and nudges to a casual listener's ears, zilch, zero, nada. For certain genres, this is not necessarily a problem. But when you claim to be writing and playing grand pop statements, it kind of becomes one. The jump from "Little Red Corvette" to "Delirious" is just jarring, for example. What is that ridiculous happy-go-lucky pseudo-mock-rockabilly synth riff? And, er... wait... What? Was that *thing* a single, too? Really??? There are indeed a few "endearing" curios in *1999*, which probably triggered Prince's fans to unabashadly label it as a masterpiece because they thought those intriguing yet somewhat half-baked compositions had something "different" in them compared to other more famous cuts. Chiefly among those weird songs is the interestingly ambient and ambiguous "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)", sounding as if Kraftwerk mated with Otis Redding under Devo's voyeuristic leer, not so bad if you like such kinky set-ups in your sex life. To which you might also add "Free", a Motown-like ballad with a nice piano part but not much else in terms of memorable stuff. A change of pace, a missionary-position sort of statement, if you will. Of course, those flaws are sometimes amplified by appalling lyrics here and there. Prince, being the piece of work that he was, often considers his romantic conquests (real or fantasized) as so many inerchangeable objects for his own narcissitic lust. No, women are not "beautifully complex", they're just different one from the other, just as men are. And if they don't always cater to your every need, it's not because of "something in their water", you prick. They're not bonzai trees, for chrissake. However, as ludicrous as those immature ditherings are, such paranoid rants can sometimes spawn striking poetic images once in a while. In "Lady Cab Driver", for instance, just as the singer is fantasizing about 'doing it' with the titular character, he starts to *dedicate* each thrust of his hips to everything life has for us (yes, you read that correctly), both the good and the not-so-good. The list goes from politicians dooming our world to greedy billionaires, from God to nature, and finally, from his lover to himself and his own shortcomings (with a surprisingly candid admission he wishes he was "as tall and handsome" as his brother on one particular thrust--quite the precious psychological nugget for all wannabe shrinks out there). Sublimation of our instinctual death drives through sex has never been better depicted. Too bad the music (all that lazy funk set on "automatic' mode behind) is just... so-so. This is not exactly the case of finale "International Lover", where Prince pictures himself as a pilot of his own private Sex Airlines company. The singer won a Grammy for his impressive performance on this slow extravaganza, as tongue-in-cheek corny as it is tongue-in-your-mouth exhilarating. Honestly, Prince deserved that trophy, so good he is when he whispers and taunts his lady prey to get on board with him, moaning, howling and orgasming at the very end, just as their plane is reaching its pleasurable destination at last. A place called "Satisfaction", by the way--yeah, that same tropical island Mick Jagger kept yearning and yelling after, to no avail... Yet, as good as that destination is, once you've just spinned that track, you don't necessarily want to come back to it for your next holidays. It's a fun listen the first time around, we'll grant you that. But it's also *another* long-winded proposition coming at the end of an album almost exclusively filled with other such long jams and whatnot. As you and I know, promising trysts often end up being nothing but one-night-stands, even when the sex was good on that night. That's where hedonism soon starts to lose its edge, as is the case here. Fortunately, Prince was too eager to please to repeat the same mistakes twice, no matter how commercially successful *1999* turned out to be. "Sign 'O" The Times" had a similar concept, but it was so varied, so adventurous stylistically speaking, that its also admittedly long songs fare better today in comparison. "Parade" was a mixed affair, but it proved the funky midget was able to pen far shorter tracks that could still be impressive, whether in their sonic experimentations or their display of pop instincts. And *Purple Rain* was the best those two worlds had to offer, the exact balance Prince needed to reach right after *1999*. We won't go further after this eighties period, though. Even when a music review forces you to elaborate on sex and other earthly pleasures, there's still some minimum decency to preserve. It's not how long and how often you're doing it that counts. It's how much you can genuinely enjoy the whole thing. [Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 990 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 3 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 5 (including this one for its "historical" importance, even if I doubt it will make the final cut...) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (as I think many others are more important): 3]

Viihdyttävää, kuten Prince tuppaa aina oleen. Kuitenkin jää sellanen ”pakko kuunnella uudestaan ja uudestaan”-fiilis pois.

Even if 1980's rock/pop is the opposite of my taste in music, I can truly see how this is an icon for the lovers of the genre as well as an album that deserves to be in this list. It's well made, catchy, and strong in lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation. Truly a step-up from Bad by Michael Jackson, and made me realize how fucking Bad it actually is.

Great songs… red corvette etc

Åter igen jag gillar!

Very well known album. Solid vocals and mix on almost all songs.

This was definitely better than the last Prince album I listened to for this project. A lot of classic songs that I knew, but didn't necessarily know they were Prince songs. Still not really my thing, but I can respect the art.

It’s fine. It’s very 80s. I don’t get the appeal…

I want to like Prince. But listen to a full album is a bore and a chore. This would maybe have made 4 stars if he could wrap up a tune in 3 and 1/2 minutes, but everything drags out to 7mins and blends into each other - and I lose interest. Protracted and self-indulgent.

This is a generous 3... I love Little Red Corvette and a few other tracks are good, but there are many bloated tracks that I don't care for at all

I feel like I'm watching all of the Godfather movies in one sitting. Not super excited about listening to more Prince since we just reviewed Purple Rain, which was decent. This too is decent but I'm just so tired of looking at Don Corleone. Some decent radio music from my childhood but nothing I'd ever buy or listen to willfully especially after being served so much in such a short span.

This is our third and final Prince album from the generator, generated before the first hit of several groups with more albums on the list. That's random for you, I guess. "Sign O The Times" was very uneven, then "Purple Rain" was a masterpiece, so what about "1999?" After the deservedly popular "1999" (even if it predicted joyful end-of-century partying and not existential Y2K panic), "Little Red Corvette" reached peak 80s, and then "Delirious" followed immediately after with what can only be called trough 80s. That was annoying and made me concerned we were in for another uneven album. Then I spent most of "D.S.M.R." coming up with ASMR jokes, only to be shocked by the cries for help at the end. Prince sings that the R stands for Romance, but that doesn't sound like romance to me. If there's some deeper meaning here I can't find mention of it, but at the very least it served to scramble my plans for ASMR jokes. Luckily there was some very listenable, enjoyable, but unmemorable, funk and soul in the second half of the album. (As long as you let it go in the background and don't pay too much attention to song lengths. There were two moments when I thought "it must be on to the next song now? I didn't notice the transition. Nope, nevermind, this one still has two more minutes.")

This one is hard for me. I like it more than Sign O the Times because it is less all over the place which made Sign O the times probably very exciting for people who were not me. I don't like it quite as much as Purple Rain; however, which means I should be giving this a 3.5 but our stupid rating system doesn't allow it. Fun fact, being in the class of 1999 meant that this song was requested and played at every high school game/function my senior year. However, it was NOT our official class song because the administration thought the line "I've got a lion in my pocket, and baby he's ready to roar" was too inappropriate. Of all the Prince lyrics about sex to get huffy about....

After getting all 3 Prince albums on the list, my conclusion is that I want to like Prince more than I actually do. He was innovative and talented. No doubt. There are some songs I really enjoy, like 1999, Little Red Corvette, and Lady Cab Driver. But there is also shit like Something In The Water, which is bafflingly bad in comparison.

Really enjoyed some of it, other bits just wash by me.

Rating this a 3 just like the other two Prince albums I've listened to. Was probably innovative and modern for it's time. But fails to grab my interest today.

This album is 40 years old! Wow! A couple of fantastic tracks. Prince was an absolute master at his craft. Enjoyable to listen to again.

Pretty varied and adventurous. Lots of different approaches, some work, some not so much. Pretty stellar start to the album, but tapers off a bit and things like something in the water is just a strange detour.

Mir nicht gitarrig genug

Sehr 80er Pop aber auch nicht unlässig

not as good as purple rain

I can respect this album but just wasn’t for me. Songs are long and get repetitive

Gone too soon... Just the first talent of his time

I can respect the quality, the genius, the intent… but this is cheesy af. I guess it was very rebellious back then but no 80’s sound aged very well

The appeal here of Prince is either misunderstood or not understood at all. Synth-heavy beats, but lacking any punch just lets the lyrics go largely ignored. His talent during live performances and grip on his persona does indeed carry him, but that does not equal good music on record.

My sister hates the 80's for all of it's cheesy synth and fake instruments. I'm sure she hates 1999 because Prince has hokey 80's sounds in spades. It's a shame because while it's a fun album, you don't get to understand how talented he is. He is an incredible guitar player (watch his playing of While My Guitar Gently Weeps during George Harrison's R&R HOF induction) but I'm not sure I even heard a guitar on the album. I was bored halfway through Delirious, which wasn't good because it was followed by 3 songs averaging 8min of same old same old. I almost turned it off. Maybe fun if I want to hold an 80's dance party but if I didn't respect his body of work this might be a 2.

Prince 1999 Prince was an icon

Up there with MJ for great pop music, not exactly my thing but defo a better listen than regular pop crud

Some great singles. Funky all the way through.

Got a bit boring and weird towards the end, liked most of it though

Okay prince thanks I get it

If you like prince you will love 1999 by prince. When it's good it's good and when it's bad it's sorta fine

Some great songs about shagging. Some very long songs about shagging also.

Good album but I got bored mid way through.

Tecno . Funky

Right off the bat, this albumcover was made by a 9-year old. Ok but the actual music is fucking legendary so far, 1999 and little red corvette got me listening. And then delirious, and let's pretend that we're married which are so silly. Actually this is quite a silly album overall. Something in the water was very special with some great sounds, but some of the long songs bored me to death though. Free is good too. Ok International Lover is so good. Would bump to a 4 if the album cover wasn't so ugly and the two preceding songs weren't so boring. 3/5

Too much sex lol

3.5 stars.

I understand this was a game changing album it just isn't really for me.

99 que foi gravado nos anos 80

Better than I remember it being. Still not a huge Prince fan, but I could definitely listen to 1999 again willingly. And of course, Prince’s instrumentation is great.

Funkar alltid

songs are unncessicasrily long

Quinticential 80s and well produced but not something i would sit and listen to

As an album: A few killers but a lot of fillers

Awesome start with 3 classics. The rest is fun to listen to once or twice.

Each song is interesting and unique and all follow a similar joyful theme. I don't like some of the songs such as Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R. Some of the songs are kind of weird such as the afore mentioned ones. I would like it more if it had less of said parts.

Revolutionary '80s pop music. 7.9/10 Best Track: "1999"

I liked this album okay- my favorite songs were Automatic and Lady Cab Driver. Some of the songs sounded too choppy, and the singers voice was good but again sometimes I wished it was less choppy sounding. Overall it was a nice sound but not anything extraordinary for me, the songs seemed a little too similar

Good album. I enjoyed the wacky sound design but it’s a little too sexy and dance oriented for me to relate to.

3.5/5 it started well but lost it in the way. I'll have to relisten.

Some great songs, but listening to the whole album one can get an 80's synth overdose.

D.M.S.R. was an epic song, overall the album has the sexiness of prince's music.

not sure

Really nothing except the first 2 songs stood out to me

I understand the importance of this album, but it's not my kind of music. I prefer Prince covers to actual Prince songs. "1999" is the only great song that I liked very much from the whole album.

International Lover y 1999

knew a few of those...

Decent

Never got into Prince, the mix is not doing him any favors, interestingly I prefer my prince live much better. But I gotta respect the swag, and diverse sound of the band. falseto out of 5

i thought for a long time that i didn't like prince. i'm pretty sure this album was the reason.

Do I not like Prince as much as I thought I did?

Some amazing pop. Some self-indulgent guff.

Feelgood albumpje met helaas maar 1 klassieker erop. Kan er niet helemaal inkomen

Some parts were too... sensual

Enjoyed a blast from the past

Funky, fun, sounds like the birth of both Bowie and Bruno

It feels way more chaotic and less refined than I remember the hits off of this album being. DMSR and Delirious are my favorites, but every track has something to add.

Heh, prince is dope.

I like the start. The rest is meh.

Algumas faixas muito boas.

if i were more cheerful this album would be great, i have to say that the album is contained to a singular style it doesnt go much further than weaker version of 1999 and red corvette

Don't get me wrong. It is a good album, but it is also a long album, with I feel a lot of meandering outros. By the time the album finishes, I am in a bit of a haze. Wish it was 15 minutes shorter.

Pretty catchy 80s pop, everyone knows little red Corvette and the rest is cool as well but it's super dated to hear in 2021. I can't imagine I'd listen to it again. 3/5.

I’ve never been much of a Prince fan, and this album didn’t change that for me. 2/5.

5/10 - It's alright but can get grating with the same sound

I just can't seem to get into Prince. This isn't the first time I listen to him, but each time I'm somewhat bored and disengaged.

Vind vooral z’n gitaarsolo op while my guitar gently weeps geweldig.

I just don’t really like prince or understand the hype Every song here could (should) be over half the length Title track is good though 2

He was original to say the least. His music was not my thing but it wasn't terrible either

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? 🤔 Would recommend to anyone? ❌ Would buy on Vinyl? ❌

Not for me

Sorry prince, it's me not you

"1999" is widely regarded as the first masterpiece of the great Prince. The album, which was released in 1982, marked his commercial breakthrough — it was actually the first Prince album I ever heard. In 2019, a Super Deluxe Edition comprising a total of five CDs with 65 tracks (instead of the original eleven) was released. While the synth-and-drum-machine sound certainly shaped Prince’s work in the years that followed and defined the sound of the era, it is also the main issue I have with the album from today’s perspective. Prince recorded the album almost single-handedly, as he usually did, only occasionally enlisting the help of other musicians, mostly backing singers. The list of instruments used reads like a synth fan's wet dream from the early '80s: ARP Omni, Oberheim OB-SX, OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8, Linn LM-1, Pearl SY-1 Syncussion, and so on. – in short, everything that sounds like the '80s today, including handclaps, plus guitar, bass, piano and vocals. The album hasn’t aged well. Many of the musically brilliant moments suffer from this 'plastic sound', compounded by a few of Prince's cringe-worthy, sexist lyrics. For me, revisiting this supposed classic was disappointing. There are other Prince albums that work much better today.

Album #192 Prince: 1999 Honestly, I’ve never really been into Prince; growing up, he was always just one of those artists that everyone knew, yet I don’t think I even listened to a song by his in its entirety until recently. But amidst my ignorance, I still held him in high regard, purely based on the plaudits I would hear about him; people talk about Prince as if he was the second coming, and that his songs were so good you would either orgasm or cry, or maybe even both. So finally, I listened to his album Purple Rain, and well, it was good, but kind of disappointing. I liked the ballads; I mean, who doesn’t love that title track, but the funky, squealy, sexual songs were just a little too weird for me. I always associate Prince and Michael Jackson in my head as eccentric androgynous 80s pop stars, and I wasn’t around at the time, but I’ve never understood why people just accepted them for who they were. Prince just comes across to me as weird; I don’t understand how music this strange was so mainstream and beloved. Listening to 1999 felt like being come onto by a scrawny tweaker on the subway; it doesn’t feel erotic, it feels perverse. The songs are also far too long; I mean, we get through ‘1999’ and ‘Little Red Corvette’ in the first ten minutes, then we have an hour of Prince seducing us to look forward to. Also, though the first two tracks are easily the best songs here, I really don’t get that generational feel from them that others have claimed; with Purple Rain I feel it, but here it’s mostly just good dance music, not a timeless anthem. Look, Prince is definitely talented, and overall it’s not the worst album, but I think the guy is really an acquired taste; but according to his popularity, I’m the only one who doesn’t have the taste for him, the cilantro of music. I think if he had the reputation of a Zappa, he would make more sense in my head, but I suppose he is really just an enigma Best Songs: Little Red Corvette, 1999, Free Worst Song: Automatic Score out of 10: 5

I once thought I liked Prince and Michael equally. I don't I don't I don't oh my god I can't STAND this mans energy it's so jittery and muted at the same time. Minus a Million points

Opens with a few decent tracks, but quickly descends into a slog of tracks almost indistinguishable from each other. I'm certainly not the target audience for this kind of 80s sensuality, and so found the whole project a bit off putting. At least the theme of hedonism fits the masturbatory idea to stretch out Automatic to 9 and a half minutes long.

I do not understand this one bit. What exactly do people adore about this music? This feels vaguely like sexual harassment. Or maybe assault. I guess on some level the ultimate-liberation-sex-party thing could be fun, but it just does not jive with me. And the music feels so...canned, and unimpressive? Fave tracks: - Little Red Corvette - Delirious - Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)

Pretty disappointed after the first two radio friendly tracks. Most of them sounded like Casio beats with some extra random flavor. Also I do not feel or get any of the sexuality people describe. This music leaves me limp.

This was just not enjoyable. Very much a let down. I guess we need to keep in mind that the 80s was the height of the cocaine crisis...

Some funky fun songs. Overall not really for me

Never really listened to any Prince. Don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything. 2/5

I've come to learn something about myself and that is that I do not enjoy Prince. I appreciate and respect Prince, I can see why people love him. I just don't love the style.

I can’t express enough how boring it was to listen

A...expansive collection of songs. It was probably innovative in its time, but this isn't really for me

Every time that I think I discovered a Primce album I actually like, he decides 2 bangers is enough and proceeds to fill the rest of the album with horrendeous 10-minute experimental jams.

enjoyed "lets get married" but otherwise this album left me pretty indifferent. fab cover art though!

J'aime pas du tout... très répétitif

unbiased 2.5

An entirely overrated album.

honestly? it's fine 1999 thru d.m.s.r. (the first half)--it's '80s thru and thru. and if i were a rebellious '80s teen with repressive parents, sure, this would be life changing. it's experimental, it's edgy, it's got all the things that probably appeal to rebellious '80s teens with repressive parents. however, i am none of those things, so it's just fine. it does have a good disco beat, i'll give it that; i could get down on the dance floor to this (if i was a better dancer) automatic--sounds like the soundtrack to a magnum p.i. montage or something free--prince could've sung for the eagles lol lady cab driver--scuse me what? oh joy eight minutes international lover--i'm glad most albums don't have moaning like that. we were going solid 3/5 in the first half. after the second half, i stand by my assessment that this is exactly what a rebellious '80s teen is into. unfortunately, *experimental moaning noises* are not on my list of things i look for in good music. 2/5.

Pas ouf j’accroche pas

This score reflects the one song I enjoyed on this album.

Jesus Christ Prince, not every song on this album needs to be so fucking long. The first two songs on this are the only two I liked and have heard previously. The rest was Prince going on about sex in songs that were just stupidly long.

Ampak hm, dejansko kul komad ("1999"). "Let's Pretend We're Married" - hmmm. Naslednji, "Automatic" isto. 9 minut in pol?! "Free" mi je musically še najboljši do zdaj. Pa me sam še trije komadi čakajo (k so somehow skupi 21 minut). "All the Critics Love U in New York" je spet a repeating nightmare.

Tried several times but listening to a whole album of prince does nothing for me, this time was no exception

It sounds like Prince took every cutting edge piece of studio technology and packaged it up into this album. Maybe you had to grow up with this music to appreciate it? The whole thing has the feel of a Fruity Loops sample song. It had a few moments but as always, I don't understand the fuss about Prince.

Apart from '1999' and 'Little Red Corvette', I hadn't heard the other tracks. Listening to the album in full, I can't say that anything else stayed with me although I suppose 'All the Critics Love U in New York' was alright. Very 80s instrumentation, which isn't a particularly good thing. Nothing to suggest an all time great album at all.

Moments of greatness combined with a lot of weird/homogenous sound and not enough of his amazing guitar work.

The vibe is interesting but not my cup of tea. Cele care mi-au captat atenția: “All the critics love you in ny” “Lady Cab driver” “Let’s pretend we’re married” “International lover”

Don’t think I fuck with prince after all

Not a big Prince fan. 1999 is decent. The album isn't inherently terrible, it just goes on and on and on. Automatic is just the same annoying sound for 9 and a half minutes. D.M.S.R was fun, but also too long. Skipped the last few songs, got bored.

Okish, seems like they copied the music style of the era. Doesnt feel original.

There are some great moments in this record. Little red corvette is an early Hootenanny favourite of mine… but there are large swaths of this record that I dislike a lot. I don’t enjoy the 80s lame synth production on most of the middle section songs. Free is solid. There are some pretty wild and astonishing vocal performances.

I don’t understand what the hoopla is about. From the cover design through the length and into the songs. I don’t get it and I doubt I ever will.

normal pero me senti gay

chill 80s background music. None of the songs were exiting imo.

My main problem with 1999 is that while I really like a lot of the melodies, they're completely marred by the "futuristic" synth and crappy drum machines. I really dislike the dated 80s drum machine sound and clap tracks so a lot of the songs fell flat for me. Standout tracks on this listen were "1999" "Let's Pretend We're Married" and "Automatic" I dont think Prince is my thing. I respect the hell out of what he did and he was an incredible guitarist, but this album fell a bit out of my taste profile. Overall 1999 made me more angry than not, so its gotta be a 2 from me. There are glimpses of greatness, but a lot of this album is just really annoying. It's quite long too, which didn't help it out. Bummer.

I respect Party Like it’s 1999 and Little Red Corvette but this is just not my vibe.

not my fav icl … michael bodies

I just don’t get the popularity of Prince sorry. Might be one of those things where I had to be there at that time to appreciate this specific album because while many people in the reviews mention it being what they thought the future would be like, it just sounds incredibly dated to me

Prince solidifies his reputation as the horniest human in all of history, just ahead of Genghis Khan. Some fun and funky instrumentals that run long, but only a couple overstay their welcome. Highlights: "Delirious"

I've never considered myself a fan of Prince despite liking a few of his hits. But I try to be fair and open to changing my opinions, so I went into this album thinking that even if I didn't end up liking Prince, a full album might at least help me appreciate what he does. It did not. By the end, I felt even less inclined to listen to his music. Notes: Little Red Corvette is objectively a great song, most likely due to the melody of the verse and the way it builds tension. Free isn't terrible, but I highly doubt I'll come back to it. International Lover isn't bad either. It's far more tender and emotive than most of the album. Though even that gets undercut by the weird flight attendant roleplay outro, which makes the whole thing feel a bit ridiculous. The rest I either did not like or they didn't stand out enough for me to remember what I'd listened to as soon as the song ended. One of the few redeeming qualities of the album is Prince's penchant for sharp, throaty screaming, which at least injects some energy into what is otherwise a boring-as-hell album. A lot of the album relies on repeating grooves without a payoff, which is likely why I felt bored.

Had somewhat high hopes for this after hearing lots of good stuff about Prince and also being familiar with the title song '1999'. However about halfway through i honestly had enough with the album(still listened all the way through). It felt like every song just had some random moaning and grunting, most of the lyrics were all just very sexual and it became kinda creepy and also repetitive towards the end. I will give it some merit because of some interesting intrumentals but still had a very heavy 80s electric effect sound to it, which i personally think doesnt always age too well this, being one of them. There were some underlying political themes apart from all the sex stuff which did grab my attention but then was thrown back into some random moaning. I dont know if its just me with this opinion on it all but yeah honestly i went into this thinking i would like it as '1999' is a tune and was let down. Sidenote i really dont like the album cover, i cant describe why but i think it looks awful.

For years, I’ve heard many people, some of whom I respect, continue to praise Prince for his genius and amazing songwriting. Of course, I’ve heard the radio hits and never quite understood all of the reverence. Well, I’ve finally listened to a prince album front to back and I still don’t understand the reverence. I will admit that he writes some decent hooks and some of the synth work is interesting, but I find his singing to be obnoxious and the songs are repetitive. If you want funk listen to parliament, if you want pop listen to MJ

Didn't enjoy this. Too 80s. Most songs went on for too long.

Not as good as purple rain

It's not awful music, though I do not care about Prince and his music. Also, the tracks drag on too long

oh hey i know prince. i like prince. i’ve heard this album. i went on a huge prince deep dive a couple years back, listened to every prince album. bad idea, give them space. hated the guy once i was done. this one was a highlight though, im excited to jump back into this. dammit. i love this album but i don’t think im gonna be in the mood for this today. sucks. never mind absolutely in the mood for this. generational opening two songs. that being said, each song goes on slightly too long 😭 dammit i’m not really feeling this after delirious. great three track run. these songs just take forever to end. usually that’s not a problem for me, but it’s weird in a pop song. feels like it’s going for an extended gospel ending thing, i just don’t think it’s landing for me. and you can’t do that for EVERY SONG, PRINCE. oh god this next song is nine minutes long. thought the song was ending so i checked and there’s three minutes left. this isn’t an attention span thing, this is just genuinely too long for what these songs are. and shoot me but these later songs aren’t nearly good enough to be this long. well 1999 is a FANTASTIC song and even then i thought it was overstaying its welcome just a bit. i’m on lady cab driver. i haven’t fully liked a song since delirious. i’m worried bc this song is also eight minutes and by the sound of it so far has no reason to be. still on lady cab driver. this album is getting a two. yea i liked very disparate parts of this. mainly at the starts of songs. but i really didn’t care for this as an album. that surprised me a lot.

I really want to like Prince more than I actually do. For pop music, it’s pretty great, but I’m just not that into pop music. I know this is sacrilege to so many, and I appreciate Prince for what he was, but it’s just not my jam. Maybe if I were a dancer I would like it more?

wobbly wiggly freaky ahh music cuh
