Reviews (page 6 of 13)
I love this era of the Stones. And between Wild Horses, and Can't You Hear Me Knocking... this album may be THE album? Love it.
The Stones' tightest dirty blues rock album, and possibly their best - it's a close call between this and Some Girls. Similar to Exile on Main Street, the album works best when it's loud and filled with horns. "Bitch" is one of their brashest songs, and "Can You Hear Me Knocking" shows they can jam. But the best song may be "Sway," I love how the melody of the chorus rolls right back into the verses. These highs are up there with the highs on Exile, but this album has much less chaff. There are a couple tracks that are too bluesy and sound weak next to the rest of the album, but it concludes on a very strong run highlighted by the country rock of "Dead Flowers." As far as 70's blues rock goes this is really hard to beat - it's got the grit of the blues with all the catchiness of rock.
Never played this in full before - yet overly familiar. Very good
The blues are really good, but the Stones are too much country here for me to love.
4.5
Solid album. May be my favorite overall Stones.
still British but at least it’s not boring anymore. Probably my favorite Stones album, due in no small part to really figuring out some new shit with Mick Jagger at the helm now. No skips. Maybe this is just me, but this album probably gives me the purest Beatles influence, which raises its score for me by an artificial and negligible amount. It’s great on its own merits. I particularly love the investment in blues and the back-and-forth between muddy, fuzzy guitars and bright, sizzling ones. Good shit.
As soon as the album started I said to myself "yep. that sounds like the Rolling Stones." A band whose hits I've kinda always known, but was never really all too interested in past that. I've listened to Tattoo You and Let it Bleed, but this is not a review for those albums. Brown Sugar is kind of perhaps one of the wildest ways this album could've started off. I almost wrote the album off entirely after that one. Similar to the Kings of Leon album that kicked off with the "oops she was underage" type shit. But alas, I continued. The album will probably get a -1 for that one alone though (and i am not going to apologize that's really weird to me idk). Going off music now. I think Can't You Hear Me Knocking may have become my favorite Rolling Stones song. I'd never heard it until this but I'm glad I have heard it now. This may be a hot take, but I think Keith Richards is really good at guitar. He was consistently the highlight of the songs on this album for me. Charlie Watts on the drums was a treat, especially in Can't You Hear Me Knocking. Mick Jagger has an interesting voice that I can't tell if I actually like, or if it's just rock n' roll enough that I don't care. I'll listen to it anyway. In summary, I liked this album a lot. It was one that I was not expecting to like as much as I did since I'm just a Rolling Stones Greatest Hits guy, but it's led me to believe I should be listening to more than just that.
Historically my favorite work of theirs, with Dead Flowers and Wild Horses in particular standing out as my absolute go-to Rolling Stones songs. But I also think You Gotta Move is incredibly unpleasant. That classic blues sound is deeply unappealing to me. I’ll let it slide because the rest is so good but I don’t want this rating to be perceived as endorsement of that wretched song.
💃
Not a stones fan but this is a good album, solid 4
i'm not surprised we've got yet another entry from the stones. this is the first album release to not feature brian jones, vocalist and musician who passed after drowning in his swimming pool. more of that classic rock the group is known for, a bit of country, blues, and maybe some big band influence as well? it's got a lot for the listener to take in, and with full creative freedom, you can definitely hear all those restraints popping loose. speaking of popping loose... i have this record physically. the zipper on the cover is actually functional, you can zip it down, you nasty little ninny.
Liked everything about this album other than Jagger's vocals.
It’s the rolling stones
Very classic rock
I was around 11 years old when I got an iPod. On that iPod, I bought The Rolling Stones Greatest Hits. My stepmom asked me to play Wild Horses for her. I gave her headphones and pressed play. She sat back and her smile soon turned into tears as she wept. I will never forget that moment because it showed me how powerful music can be. After listening to the song within the context of Sticky Fingers, I can say that the songs that accompany it are great too.
Already familiar with a few songs from this album mainly Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking which made it exciting to finally listen to the whole thing. Sticky Fingers has that dirty, bluesy rock sound that The Rolling Stones are known for. The production still feels raw. Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is a long masterpiece. Had no idea the “You Gotta Move” meme song was originally done by The Rolling Stones and was on this album at all, that made everything even better. I love the involvement of the air instruments (horns) section throughout the album, especially on Bitch. I also love the groove this album has, that typical 70s groove, very bluesy with tons of great guitar riffs, but with enough rock and roll to not be considered disco. The album has a great range. I enjoyed the balance between slow, emotional songs and upbeat, groovy rock tracks. They play that dark, moody blues songs like Sway and Sister Morphine, the country influenced songs like Dead Flowers, and then the classics like Brown Sugar and Wild Horses. It makes the journey of the album much more engaging. The album cover is also iconic a simple but bold idea The close up with the zipper was shocking at the time, very suggestive and very rock ’n’ roll. The fact that Andy Warhol designed it only cemented its legendary status. My favourite tracks are Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Can't You Hear Me Knockin, You Gotta Move, Bitch, I Got The Blues, Sister Morphine, Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile.
This does have a lot of hits and it sounds great. I did not have a big Rolling Stones period in the past and my parents were much more into Zeppelin and Rush. I listened twice today and this really is some great music. I don't think I can give it a 5, because I haven't spent enough time with it yet and it didn't blow me away like some other unknown 5's I've had. I gotta go with my gut on this, 4/5.
Definitely the best stones album I’ve heard, not much detour from their normal style, but more interesting song structures and generally more expexperimntal vibe Fave tracks: Wild Horses, Can’t you hear me knocking 3.9/5
Until, and even at the start of Moonlight Mile, I was strongly feeling this review would be "Like every other Stones album, great singles, don't care about the rest because I'm just not down for the bluesy stuff". But Midnight Mile managed to right itself pretty quick after a shakey start. And there are some pretty solid deep cuts like Sway as well. Just slightly the best Stones album I've gotten so far.
classic album and really good. kinda sounded like uncle rukus
Out of the four Stones albums I’ve had on this list so far, this is easily my favorite. “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” is far and away the highlight, but there isn’t really a bad track on the record. A strong, confident album that holds together from start to finish.
The trad blues is a bit crazy but when they go to rock it can really be something special
4 stars for wild horses and can't you hear me knocking. Amazing hits. The rest is nice and easy listening as well...but we know who the real stars are
Favourite Songs: Bitch
what a total banger! I've never listened to a rolling stones album - i've only heard their hits. I enjoyed every song here - the country, the blues, the rock.
Favorite Track: Wild Horses
A great ride. Strong Stones release.
A classic and a belter - 4 stars purely because it isn't as magnificent as my personal preference on 5 star albums.
Good, liked songs: Brown Sugar, Bitch and Can't Hear me Knocking
A classic. Brown Sugar was never a favorite and a weak opener but the rest is great. No GNR or Aerosmith without this.
My personal fave Stones album. Just the right amount of sleaze. 4.5/5
Better than I thought it would be based on how annoying the Stones usually are. I never got them. They have a cool guitar lick here and there and a couple singles that are decent, but on the whole I just don't understand them. Sticky Fingers though is something I could stand to listen to again. But jesus christ does Mick Jagger make me feel uncomfortable with his lyrics, e.g. Brown Sugar... yuck. Still feeling a 4/5 on this and that's as high as a rolling stones record will ever be for me.
Rolling Stones albums can be patchy at best but this is one of the exceptions I feel 4.5*
Great and soulful ballads!
Heheh that other guy said soliloquy.
I hate the blues but I quite like blues-y. This falls largely on the right side of that distinction for me. In songs like Brown Sugar and B*tch, Keith's licks are tight and to the point and brilliant and Mick is in great peacock strutting form. Wild Horses is terrific. To be honest the only real stinker is You Gotta Move. I've just replaced the word 'mostly' in the second sentence with 'largely'. I don't even mind Moonlight Mile that much.
The Rolling Stones are always welcome!
I could tell this was good but it also didn't grab my attention viscerally. So somewhat of a discordant internal review
Bluesey country rock. Overall good. Front half was great.
I liked Sticky Fingers much better compared to Exile on Main Street, but I'm not sure why..maybe it felt deeper and it was soooo long. I loved the build up on Sister Mophine.
The Rolling Stones have so many great songs but not a lot of great albums. This one being one of the few exceptions.
Own this one. like most Stones albums, the hits are great, but the other songs are OK. of the rest of the songs, the one that stood out was "Dead Flowers". good album all together but it's not one of my go-to's when i put a Stones record on (that's usually "Exile on Main Street"
I always forget that just about every Rolling Stones album is an odd conglomeration of rock, country, and blues songs. Only their rock songs tend to make the radio or greatest hits so not very representative of what they actually sound like. It was always hard for me to listen to a complete Stones album since the transitions were so jarring. But this album I actually think they nail it. It works well and I really enjoyed it. I think this album best represents what the Rolling Stones probably wanted to sound like. Moonlight Mile was a nice gem I never heard before.
When I listen to an album, I try to rate it like I’m listening to it for the first time. That way it doesn’t skew my rating based on songs I’ve heard before. Also, I can envision the album for its artistic and revolutionary ground breaking value at that moment in time and then presently for its test over time. With that said, I love the horns and rawness of “can you hear me knocking” and the blues progression in most songs… especially Dead Flowers. All in all, a very solid album top to bottom except a song or two.
Love everything from the Stones in this era.
Great blues rock songs, dancing music
Loose, bluesy, groovy, and boozy - one of their best.
Great album! Good songs and live the stones!
A classic for a reason, lots of fun!
didn’t really hit for me, but I get why it’s a classic.
4 Stars (11/15)
What an incredible record. Front to back it is so engaging and well-produced. The moods that they carry with them throughout its sequence is such a great example of what music's capacity is, let alone in one record. "Wild Horses" is forever a timeless song, capturing such a vibe. "I Got the Blues" had me fooled for a second before Mick got on the mic, thinking I was listening to an Otis Redding track. Keith absolutely wails on "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and on many others - his creativity with his instrument really resonates, both figuratively and literally. As this is my inaugural listen to this record, I can't quite give it a 5 as it doesn't meet my requirements for such a record just yet, but I imagine it will before I die.
Very Blues influenced. I didn't realise the Rolling Stones were that Blues influenced. Very trying to be american despite being british
ROLLING STONEESSSSSS
I don't normally go in for classic rock, but I think Sticky Fingers earns it's place.
My fingers are a little sticky, hehe, if you know what I'm sayin (the toilet paper ripped mid wipe)
Another Rolling Stones album! Another one I don't have. I like this more than Exile. Great album. 4 Heard before? Some Owned: No: 24/98 (24%) Will I get? Yes
Classic is as classic does.
Mick Jaeger takes his coffee like he takes his women: Black
I thought I'd dislike this but was pleasantly surprised. Less produced and rougher arond the edges makes me feel more connected to the music. And feels authentic. 4/5.
I am a fan of the Stones' Mick Taylor era, and this has a lot of his influence in it.
Sexy as hell!! But not a 5 on this listen for me
Got many great classic Stones songs on here
One of my favourites by The Stones. If it wasn't for "you gotta move" this would be 5 stars for me
Man, Brown Sugar sure is one of the songs ever. I felt emotions when listening to it, none of which I liked. That has to be the single worst song the Stones ever put out. The rest of the album is great, so it's fine. I think they're the only British band that can consistently do Blues Rock well to any capacity. Side note, the guy on this album cover is the same guy on The Smiths' self-titled record. Massive peenus on that guy, that's impressive stuff. Anyways I'm tired and getting all over the place, back to the music. I prefer Beggar's Banquet overall, but the standout tracks of this album stand out a lot more to me, like Can't You Hear Me Knocking. Really good solos all throughout, but the ones on that song are particularly good. You Gotta Move as a song makes this album for me, it's just so goofy. I don't know why they randomly decided to throw in a wind section in the second half of the album, but the only reason I'm complaining about it is because it isn't in the first half. I'm gonna cut myself off before I ramble my way into doubling the length of the longest review I've made to date.
First Rolling Stones album, had no idea they wrote white horses. Needs a few more listens.
Strong first half, mellow second
One of my favorite Rolling Stones albums, just such a rocking vibe throughout. At times jazzy a bit bluesy while maintaining a good hard rock feel
“Brown Sugar” really bothered me. Aside from that a perfect album.
Can’t not like this
Super classic. So many dank tracks that aren't the famous singles.
Previously rated: The Rolling Stones (4/5) Beggars Banquet (5/5) Let it Bleed (5/5) Aftermath (4/5) ****************************** Not their best, but has some great tunes. Wild Horses, Brown Sugar, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, and Dead Flowers. Other tracks kind of slow the album down too much.
Three Stones albums in a week's time? Okay, I'll say it again... can't go wrong with a Stones album! This may be my favorite of the three that have been generated this week!
Have to give it a 4 just for Bitch and Wild Horses
fun
Good classic rock, 7.75/10 Best track: Wild horses (8.5/10) Worst track: Cant you hear me knocking (7/10)
Great stuff.
Great record - 4/5
Sure some bluesy sleeze rock, lots of fun. This album has the same issue as many others though that the best songs have been crushed by years of radio play.
I'd always felt the Stones were less bluesy than advertised, but I think that's just the hits. This is a lazy Sunday blues rock I can get behind.
Great atmosphere & much more enjoyable than other Stones albums I’ve listened to. The saxophone RULES. More like 3.5/3.75 just because it’s not really my type of music but 4 stars made more sense than 3
Qualify this by saying I kinda hate The Rolling Stones. But this is the definitive Stones album
While I truly love and appreciate their earliest Blues inspired tunes, this is the record where they really came into their own and bridged over from those old Blues tunes, still retaining ones like You Gotta Move, to a new sound for them.
I’ve only listened to maybe 3-4 Rolling Stones albums in full so far, but this was the first I really enjoyed all the way through. Solid songs throughout, and a really great listen. I’ll have to continue listening to their other albums and revisit the ones I already listened to.
Classic Stones again. Enjoyed this. No proper standouts but just a good solid album from start to finish.
Sticky Fingers is a fun album, very cool grandpa esc style here
This has been a hard one to rate. There's stuff on here that I never would feel the need to put on (Sway, You Gotta Move, Sister Morphine). There's stuff on here that's totally new to me that's perfectly enjoyable (Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile). There's a couple classic tracks on here that are absolutely fantastic (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses). Is that a 3? That feels low. Is it a 4? That feels high. I have the hardest time rating albums that I am waffling on - especially when they are iconic bands like, you know, that pesky little startup called the Rolling Stones. I think there's enough good stuff on here to get it to a 4, even though I'm not likely to reach for this to put on.
Some legit classics and juicy deep tracks on this one
4.5
An album with Brown Sugar and Wild Horses on it had to rate highly. I do find some Stones albums meander a bit, but their is some real quality on this album. 4/5
enjoyed it
Instrumentals are easy 5/5 Guitar solo in Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is a 6/5 That said, some lyrics and messaging are questionable and outdated for example: -a portrait of slave owners raping slaves is an appropriate analogy for my attraction to black women -if you love someone enough, there mental illness will go away -sexism is cool
Good. First time listening to it all the way through and it's an album I would add to my collection.
This is much brighter and more fun than I was expecting (based on very little knowledge). I’m enjoying the long solos and shifts throughout a track.
penis music
Bluesy. Rocky. Pretty decent
(4) it got to that one tiktok song and i was like OH SO THIS IS WHERE IT’S FROM and then the bit that sounds like a chorus line came up and i was like OHHHHHHHHHHH
a classic! makes you feel like a bad ass. wild horses obviously sticks out but I did notice a few others on this new listen.
Wild horses slaps. Otherwise fairly fine blues-driven rock, which has a fairly predictable formula. Likely very influential. Sister Morphine has got some legs. But to be clear. This is an epitome of the rolling stone aesthetic, dripping with their style, and certainly raw musicality. I wouldn't pick it up to listen to, but I cannot dispute its importance.
I don’t have a deep connection to the Stones. Whenever I listen to one of their albums, though, I find the A-side singles (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses) are much less enjoyable than the B-side rockers (Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch) and end-of-album oddballs (Moonlight Mile, Sister Morphine).
Always enjoyed this album. Not my all time favorite by The Stones or classic rock but a good one
It’s a classic! Muscle Shoals represent. This album is so fun. It’s hard to not get lost in the iconic-ness of this but it’s just really fun.
The lyrics for Brown Sugar are a little, er.... interesting with the passage of time. Some great bluesy stuff on here though.
Favorite tracks: Wild Horses, I Got The Blues
It didn't really have songs that I knew.
Such a good opener and looking forward to immerse myself in a slightly more appealing stones album… …such great blues rock, groove and soul with killer guitar licks. Such a string of classics and great songwriting. Just a good album as a whole. Good variety, skill and a whole package. First half maybe better than second but a solid 4
The Rolling Stones have a particular style that i seem to enjoy, and this album filled with Blues and amazing solos fills a lot of those boxes. 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Love this album. Probably one of if not my favorite Stones album. Very chill and consistent. Great ride.
Not as familiar with this album as Let It Bleed or others by the Stones, but I do know a good number of songs. Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, and Bitch were the high points for me. Wild Horses in particular is a greatly written song that probably doesn't get enough recognition as one of their great songs. I don't know if I liked this as much as Let It Bleed or some of their other albums, but I can see it growing on me with more time to listen to it. I think it lands as a Solid 4 for me.
Although the first few albums from The Stones had me believing them incapable of making good albums, these last two have restored all faith. I give a slight nudge to Let It Bleed for overall quality, but this is a fantastic album in its own right. This one feels particularly loose and (for lack of a better description) Americana inspired with a lot more country twang and blues scattered throughout. Highest points for me are Sister Morphine (a drawn out rootsy jam), Can't You Hear Me Knocking, and Sway (fantastic guitar work). The rest at solid through and through in their own rights. Brown Sugar is by no means my favorite Stones song, but that riff is nothing if not iconic. And truth be told it is a loose and fun sounding song; especially when the horns come ripping in through the back half. And Wild Horses reigns things in a bit for one of the better ballads Rolling Stones ever wrote. Really its a different sound than anything else I can think of from them. In my view this is a solid to high 4.
Exactly what I expect out of the Stones.
Hot out of the gate with Brown Sugar. This album has a bunch of jams I know before this listen. Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, and Bitch are all incredible 5/5 songs for me. Let's see if the rest of the album can keep up, which I think is a problem I've had with the Stones albums we've had. End of Sister Morphine is great. This was a great album but still doesn't have the umph to bump it to a 5 for me.
Starts with a huge banger, doesn't really reach that level after that. Still very good, though.
Wild Horses is probably my favourite Stones song, but I found this whole thing to be pretty great. Shoutout to Moonlight Mile (which I didn't realize was on this album).
idrk
This is a little more like it. After a few up and down albums from the Stones in this list, it's good to return to something consistent. You know you're in the right spot when you see the famous Warhol photo of the jeans at least. This is the dirty, blues rock that the Stones are known for. Complete with clean guitar licks & riffs, drums that fill the room (or your ears), and some tenor sax. Minimal wavering here, pretty much the whole album is consistently high-quality. Classics include: "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" (Which was surprisingly recorded in one take! This track is 7 minutes, mind you)
The beginning is 5/5. Unfortunately some songs at the end are so-so. I skipped "You gotta move".
The beginning was way too good. After Brown Sugar and Wild Horses the rest felt mediocre and kind of boring.
Chill nostálgico, buenos solos
Banger
Kind of THE classic Stones record. Great songs, stripped down performances, lots of attitude. Fantastic record.
A bit slower of a Rolling Stones album, but several classic songs that define their sound.
Some good songs on here but also a few that feel lackluster, leads to a up and down album experience.
goood, pero beatles > rolling 4/5
Almost quit this project, but then this album came up. Lovely guitar riffs, lots of emotion in the lead vocalist, simply a great album. Starts with the groovy 'Black Sugar'.
It's a great record, they're an excellent rock band, and in this record they're elevated by Bobby Keys' outstanding sax work. The record feels cohesive but still has a diverse sound palette. It might be a bit rough at some points, but that contributes to the style they were going for. Jagger's singing is unique and very distinctive of their sound. The guitars here are also excellent, they drive the songs a lot. As I said, my favourite aspect of the album is how the sax is incorporated, giving it some jazzy notes, extending some of the songs into improvisation that makes them great. There were many great songs, but my favourites were the classic "Wild Horses", which is a more toned down and emotional track, I also loved "Dead Flowers" and "Brown Sugar". Between "Bitch" and "I Got The Blues" was my least favourite part of the album.
The hits hold up great (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses), and this ends incredibly well (Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile). In the middle is good but not great. Would be a 4.5, but I'm going to stick to my round down policy.
Haven’t been a huge fan historically.. with this record, I’d say it mostly lands with me. A few really strong songs. “You Gotta Move” sucks though.
Fav tracks: "Cant You Hear Me Knocking" and "Bitch"
Needs speakers due to the hard panning but great mix of rock blues and county with some great guitar riffs.
So many more hits on this one.
I have listened to Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and Bitch before and enjoyed hearing them again. Bitch is a definite highlight. The energy is electric. Wild Horses is well written and brings a balance to the album. This album has a great bluesy rock vibe with some standout guitar riffs. I am not sure if I would classify this album in the "timeless classic" zone, but I still enjoyed it.
Don't know if if I've heard a Stones album front to back before. I appreciate how much they jam on a few of these songs. It really shows how talented they were back in the day.
I liked some songs more than others.
3.6
Second Stones album on my list here. And just like for "Exile on Main Street" I like it more than I thought I would. I have tried some Stones albums in the past, but found that while the singles were good, most of the rest was just mediocre blues riffing. Perhaps my tastes have changed and/or mere exposure has me liking it more now. Half of the songs here are worth repeated listening - Brown Sugar, Can't you hear me knocking, Wild Horses, Bitch. I just love the extended "Can't you hear..." because the radio edit always cuts that off. I love Improv jamming. I'll listen to this again.
Probably my favourite stones album so far. Everything here sounds really solid and cohesive.
Any album with wild horses is on is gonna be rated high
Whilst this clearly has some of those classic defining songs on it. My feeling is that this isn’t as revolutionary as people think it is. It’s a great album no question. But is it a sea change in music I’m not so sure
Good representation of The Rolling Stones
There’s no shortage of signature Stones hits on Sticky Fingers, but it’s the lesser-known songs that to me are most interesting. With its woozy Keith Richards riffing, “Sway” hits hard in its minor-key lament of vice. “Sister Morphine” is chilling in its hallucinatory detail of junkiedom, while “Dead Flowers” disguises the same thing in pleasant country trappings. It's the drugs, stupid. Sticky Fingers also wins points for its boundary-pushing Warhol-designed packaging incorporating a real zipper in its original LP version, which always tripped me out when I was young.
'85 me: Wow. Brown Sugar is an AMAZING opening track! '25 me: Good song but...problematic lyrics. '85 me: oh? I guess I never paid attention to the lyrics... '25 me: Essentially told from the POV of a racist pedophile. '85 me: Oh shit. Yea. That's bad. At least in 2025 you're not having to deal with racist pedophiles any more, eh? '25 me: [blank stare...] '85 me: uh...right? '25 me: [blank stare...] '85 me: 'doh! '25 me: But that riff on "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is just perfect! '85 me: Nice!
Not their greatest, but close!
Yah this album is jammed pack with massive global hit songs. The three mega influential hit songs on this album (brown sugar, wild horses, and can’t you hear me knocking) are easily some of their best work, and their most culturally significant. Honestly if you really forced me to pick their best album I’d probably pick this one. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. There are a few tracks that are skips for me personally. Honestly the only real complaint I have of this album is kinda silly and it’s a “me problem”. I just personally like a lot of variety spread across a full album and this is strictly a blues rock album. Obviously nothing wrong with that, they were literally pioneering this genre, but yah personally I’d like a few songs that sound different and feel like risks. But seriously this is probably one of their best albums and we are talking about one of the greatest rock bands of all time, so that’s saying something.
bun bun 7.5/10
Classic, this one is on my top 1000
One of their best. The second half of this album lagged a bit but it was still an enjoyable listen.
I didn't think I was going to like this album because I have a weird thing about the Rolling Stones. I am so happy I gave it a chance; I don't know if I would necessarily choose to revisit individual songs, but really like the flow as an album.
You can hear how this laid a lot of the foundations for rock and indie music that came later. Especially the guitar parts, it's that evolution from blues to this more riffy, single-string like guitar parts (playing more notes on one string rather than jumping around the fretboard). Some of it feels like rusty blues music, especially you gotta move. Worth listening to through.
8/10
“Brown Sugar” has a kicking riff and strong chorus hook, but the lyrics have aged so poorly it’s hard for me to imagine that they were kosher even at time of release. I’ve never been big on “Wild Horses”, but hearing it in context of the record warmed me to it more. (That and it makes me think about Bojack Horseman.) “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” is an all-out smack-down ripper of a track. Holy shit does that song go. “Bitch” also slaps in a more straightforward way. The closing two tracks are lovely in their way too. It’s probably the strongest front-to-back Rolling Stone record I’ve gotten from the generator so far. (But it’s still no ‘Exile’. Waiting on that one.)
Yeah, alright, okay, yeah yeah
I like this one :)
I'd never noticed how fucked the brown sugar lyrics are??? Still great sorry
Good
My first full Rolling Stones project as I have previously only listented to some singles. Wild Horses I already knew, and it might be one of my favorite Stones tracks; it's an incredibly intimate song. The album cover and its title fit this album so well. It is, in every sense, sticky. This album is the definition of sex, drugs & rock'n'roll. Sticky doesn't just have the sexual connotation, though it's definitely felt on songs like Brown Sugar. Sticky refers to all kinds of sticky situations, mostly related to drugs, I would argue. The album gets quite dark and poetic as it tackles the cost of said rock'n'roll lifestyle, addiction and overdosing, suicide attempts (of Maryanne Faithful), the aftermath of breaking up, and the person-shaped hole that stays behind. The album is a constant battle between defiance and defeat, perfectly ending on Moonlight Mile as an acceptance of both, the instruments (especially the violins) building up to a grand finale. The lonely traveler is almost home, desperation and despair clinging to him more than ever, but in his solitude he finds hope: "I'm hiding, baby, and I'm dreaming. (...), let it go now (...) yeah I'm coming home"
This was actually quite good. I've never been a fan of the Rolling Stones but this album sounded more like a southern blues rock album. Good harmonies and guitar work. Pretty sweet.
Excellent album. Great music throughout.
Great album! I did think it opened very strongly and then failed to maintain the energy though.
Instantly recognisable from the start. stones are very good. reminds me how much i want to learn proper blues guitar. Wild horses obviously is very very good. Enjoyable listening all the way though. vocals are also very good. Can't say a bad word about it really.
Love this album. Sway. Wild Horses. Solid all the way through
I’ve had a few early Stones albums through the project so far, and this one I enjoyed much more. ‘Brown Sugar’ or ‘Wild Horses’ were my top 2 tracks here, most of the others were decent as well; ‘You Gotta Move’ was my least favorite. 3.75/5
Classic rock that is classic for a reason.
Some stone cold classics on here but stalls at some points for me, a legendary album and important for not just music but the band themselves. Some great guitar work on here especially.
This is The Stones as most know them when they perfected their formula. They went back to a stripped down and more basic rock approach. Great album.
Not my favorite stones by a long shot but a great collection of what they do best. Rock hard. Even the ballads and blues numbers have a refined sense of rock attitude. Love it.
Overall: 8/10 Another pretty great album from the Stones. I think they kind of had their formula in place to the point that they could sleepwalk into writing a good song. I think what makes this album for me is the slower tracks, which I think the band is generally hit or miss with. I really love the idea of someone hearing Wild Horses on the radio and thinking "I'm gonna look up the album this is on!" only to have some bulge staring them in the face. Fav Song: Wild Horses Least Fav Song: You Gotta Move
maybe the stones are growing on me. im liking each one progressively more
BEST SONGS: - Wild Horses - You Gotta Move
The Rolling Stones are good at making Rock and Roll songs.
Va duro. 7.7/10
Solid Stones album.
Great album, it's a lovely combination of the late 60s and early 70s and it kicks ass. Starting off with the bangers, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, and Can't You Hear Me Knocking. The only song I'm kinda eh on is the ending song, Moonlight Mile, but it doesn't ruin it.
I mean what can I say. It’s sticky fingers. Elite songs about drugs. Best song either bitch or sister morphine
'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' is a song and a half.
Solid album from Mick, Keith and the boys. Yeah, Brown Sugar hasn't aged well but the rest of the album is on point. Can't You Hear Me Knocking is an all timer.
Wild horses Couldn't drag me away Wild, wild horses Couldn't drag me away
very nice, very like i wanna listen with the windows down in the summer, really liked it, lots of talk of drugs and sex
With all love to classic rock, The Rolling Stones were never among my favorites. They have great songs, but most of them aren't that interesting to me and kind of repetetive. Sticky Fingers is great as it has two songs I actually enjoy (Can't you hear me knocking and I Got the Blues) and one I love (Sister Morphine). As an album experience, I would gladly relisten to it second half, but the start was shaky.
as far as boomer blues rock from the time and place goes, i'll take the Stones over pretty much anything else. deserves to be one of the 1001? hell yea brotherrr \m/
Easy peasy lemon squeazy listening.
A great thievery of black American music :)
Again, super classic, Wild Horses is one of the greatest songs of all time. A little uneven, not a big fan of Sister Morphine or Dead Flowers
All timer. Love the country twang in Dead Flowers.
This album is much more my speed when it comes to rock. It's an album with a lot of soul in it, favorite tracks were Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sister Morphine, and Moonlight Mile. Loved the use of the strings and piano in the outro of the last song.
83/100. Brown Sugar and Can’t you hear me Knocking two of my favorite Stones songs, few other decent ones but a little slow for my taste
This is one of the greatest classic rock albums ever and perhaps the Stones' best. But this isn't a 5/5 for me because I think I just don't enjoy the Rolling Stones all that much. While I understand the appeal, Jagger's vocals, especially when he puts on the southern drawl in songs like "Dead Flowers", frequently annoy me or draw me out of the music, they are just too over-the-top in a studio setting. I admit I'm a "Wild Horses" hater, it seems to go on and on. Aside from the organ solo (I assume that's Billy Preston?) on "I Got the Blues", I find it just kind of standard blues. Much of it doesn't feel innovative so much as a re-interpretation of a lot of Americana. I think Exile on Main Street is better, and I enjoy the Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies more. There are many strengths. "Brown Sugar" has one of the Stones' catchiest and most iconic riffs (putting aside the problematic lyrics...). The timing of the guitar riff in intro of of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is so tasty, and its extended outro is vibey and awesome. The slide guitar on "Sister Morphine" is so cool. So it's not as if I dislike this album, but I can't seem to rate it perfectly due to my own tastes.
Ran out of time to listen properly more than once, but it’s got to be a four really. Even if the Wikipedia page spends an inordinate number of paragraphs on the identity of the LP cover crotch.
As blaspheming as it sounds, I'm not as high on this album as others. Some of the most classic songs in the Stones oeuvre don't scratch my itch. That being said, if I'm listening to this album, it's probably a good night with some good friends.
Love it more each time
Subtracting one star for Wild Horses
A really solid classic blues rock album. Great songwriting across the board with multiple highlights, and some excellent performances and production choices throughout the record. Brown Sugar as an instrumental is impeccable, it's a shame the lyrics are so questionable but hey ho. Wild Horses is a top 5 Stones song, maybe even the best they did, just a beautifully written and performed song. Really enjoyed Moonlight Mile closing out the album, great build up throughout the song and when the strings kick in it really comes together as a great closer. Favourites - Brown Sugar, Sway, Wild Horses, Dead Flowers, Midnight Mile
Considerably more enjoyable than Exile, just a year earlier. Suffers from none of the bloat, with more memorable tracks; Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is a classic and Moonlight Mile sounds like a straight up Smashing Pumpkins song 25 years ealier. Brown Sugar (7/10) Sway (6/10) Wild Horses (8/10) Can’t You Hear Me Knocking (9/10) You Gotta Move (7/10) Bitch (8/10) I Got the Blues (7/10) Sister Morphine (7/10) Dead Flowers (7/10) Moonlight Mile (8/10) 7.4/10
Brown Sugar would be fun if not for gross objectification of enslaved women, ugh Wild Horses is beautiful way more chill of an album than what i associate with Rolling Stones Bitch is fun! Moonlight Mile is my fave, probably It is an album that keeps improving with every listen so far
Great
This feels like a more concise version of Exile on Main St.
Bluesier than I was expecting, but I enjoyed this.
I liked hearing some of the lesser played songs again.
Features some of my favourite Stones tunes. Some of the others aren't quite as great, but even the worst songs on here are good. Among the best Rolling Stones albums.
Enjoyable classic rock, even if I found parts of it unmemorable. I like “Brown Sugar” and I had “Wild Horses” in my head all weekend.
As someone who isn't a Stones fan at all, was better than I remember it being from the other couple of times i've heard it. 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' is a real banger
The intro to Can't You Hear Me Knocking gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. The crunchy guitar by itself, then later the bass coming in to accompany is one of my favorite passages of music. Not much gives me the stank face so fast. Sister Morphine has slick guitar playing. Really enjoyed this track Moonlight Mile is gorgeous 4.5
Mest intressanta Rollarit skivan på den här listan hittills. Bästa låten: Wild Horses
kind of what i think of when i think of the stones outside of singular hits
If I was asked what my favourite Rolling Stone album was, this probably wouldn't be it, but it's pretty damned good. That said, it's been a long time since I last listened to the Rolling Stones, so I don't think I even have a good answer to that question in the first place. I guess I'll figure that out once I have a few more Stones albums generated. Favourite tracks: Sway, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, You Gotta Move, Sister Morphine, Moonlight Mile
v good
v good
One of my favorite Rolling Sones LPs
Solid blues-based rock all the way through
I liked this Stones album better than Let it Bleed, 3 certified hits and even the hits were better because they weren’t edited for radio
Iconic guitars. Feel the blues influences. Wild Horses is incredible.
A couple classic rock songs - gotta love Wild Horses - and some bluesy rock song I hadn’t heard before. Plus, I just like the Rolling Stones.
Very solid! This album, to me, encompasses more of what The Rolling Stones' strengths are than Beggars Banquet - I'm not sure they pull off the roots-y sound on there as well (though those songs were ofc enjoyable), but the grimy blues rock jamming on this one are their bread and butter.
Hits galore. Brown Sugar doesn't play nice with modern sensibilities etc. Dead Flowers sucks unless Townes is doing it. Otherwise, you've gotta give it up. Never leaves my top 5 stones. Top 1 star review guy's favourite album is by Incubus. Hilarious. Disqualified.
tweede Rolling Stones op rij.. maar deze was dan wel een goeie (vorige een matige)... RS-gewijs moeten er toch altijd enkele stinkers op staan, maar op deze was dit vrij beperkt
4 sterne
I liked it! 7/10
This was a solid release for The Rolling Stones. It’s a great blend of their earlier hard rock and blues rock, with some folk and country influences mixed in. The production is polished in some ways but still has a raw, gritty edge that brings out the stripped-down essence of rock and blues. The use of piano and saxophone is another standout feature, adding a soulful, laid-back feel to the album.
A little bit racist, occasionally boring, but with some bops and a few really enjoyable solos.
Wild horses and moonlight mile are just plain beautiful. Brown sugar, though canceled, is an undeniable classic. Finally, though I’ve known it for years, upon close listening it has been gratifying to see what a complete rock ‘n’ roll jam can’t you hear me knocking is.
brown sugar is such a powerful openning tbh. i really liked it. great listen. had great time listening.
Приятный для слуха сборник. 7 из 10.
Exile is my favorite, but Sticky Fingers is pretty fabulous. Plus, the zipper.
I have already listened to this album, but it is still good. The Rolling Stones are just a good band in general.
After the last album I heard yesterday, this was a much needed elevation in quality. It was a great listening experience and I love how they blended many different elements of different genres to make their own unique sound.
1001 Rolling Stone albums you must listen to before you can die. It takes several generations before you learn that the gift is a curse. You see a succession of dark ages followed by golden ages followed dark ages. Empires rise and fall. The meaning of Ecclesiastes becomes unambiguous. Man is capricious. Nothing changes. The sheer tedium of it all brings you near to madness. And then you remember. That promise from long ago. It began with Beggar’s Banquet. Then Sticky Fingers. Very soon Let it Bleed. Then on to their weird shit from the 80’s. All the live albums. You seek out the BBC tapes like a fiend. Do interviews count? Previously unreleased recordings? Session demos? You consume it all with a thirst that seems unquenchable. “Are you some kind of aficionado,” they ask. No, you reply. I am just a bored god, seeking his own demise. After living through your own eternity there is only one memory that comes near to bringing you happiness. The store room of that infamous rug seller of lower Anatolia. The smell of sweet spices and animal dung wafts in from the bazaar of Ali Abu Baktar. The detritus of civilization all around you. A place for seekers of arcana and esoterica. Everything that is forbidden. There, as ever, you sought out that rare, final record whose sound would be your final resting peace. That is when you saw him. You will always recognize your own. With practiced indifference you look away. He does too. But you cling on each other’s every word. He speaks to the purveyor of forbidden things. There, you overhear it. Something that will make eternity ever so slightly bearable. You know that your fate is not the worst. You know because this lost soul is on a quest that can never end. A curse worse than yours. To listen to every last Beatles recording before he dies.
un peu country
Really good listen
Rare solid Rolling Stones album. I knew a few songs ahead of time but I was surprised by how good the rest were. Props to Mick Jagger for mostly resisting the urge to put any terribly slow wailing blues songs on the album. We’ll give you You Gotta Move
An absolutely classic Rolling Stone album with the defining RS sound stamped all over it. I never really listened to a full album of theirs before, so this was an interesting experience. It contains a few top hits of the band, especially Wild Horses which is a track that I have heard a lot before. What is interesting about this band is that you can still hear the big influence that blues had on the Rock & Roll genre. They also had an interesting guitar style with picked strings in the strums. Standouts: "Wild Horses" has just beautiful guitar. Great picked strumming with interesting extra notes sticking out, it both sounds more complicated and easier than it is.
Cool Album, with some great songs and also a few forgettable tunes.
Funky. More jazzy and bluesy than I thought it would be. Enjoy the lively instrumentals and tempo. Harsh vocals that are sometimes grating, but suit the genre. Rough and powerful.
Enjoyable, would buy LP
Sway and brown sugar are good
Fantastic
I think this is the first time I've ever listened to a full Stones album start to finish. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that there is good amount of variety in there, but every song stands strongly on its own. It's a shame about the lyrics in Brown Sugar. Despite them distancing themselves from it, it's still very much... out there.
I like this typical Rolling Stones rock n roll
pretty sick
A great blues album with a little country mix. Really enjoyed it.
Really liked this one. Probably the best Stones album we’ve had so far.
So yeah it’s Rolling Stones doing peak Rolling Stonsey things. What’s not to like.
4.5
Great album.
Some real bangers on this one. I was obviously familiar with Brown Sugar and Wild Horses which are amazing, but didn't know Can't you hear me knocking so well. I love the riff and hook, which pays off well after the long meandering section in the middle too. Bitch has a great use of brass which surprised me a bit but worked well.
Gotta be honest, that was some cool rock 'n roll.
Seconds stones album already? I thought exile was good. This was even better. Sister morphine was a song I’d never heard, but damn was it good! When you’ve heard people cover 6 out of the 10 songs, it must be good.
Felt a lot more melancholic listening to this than I would have expected. Maybe it's the album cover making me feel weird. But Wild Horses is a 10/10 any day, any time.
I don't know what I thought the Rolling Stones sounded like but this wasn't it lol. Like the sax in Brown Sugar and guitar in Sway. Vocals in Wild Horses kill it for me. Rhythm and sax in Can You Hear Me Knocking was solid and of course Dead Flowers is a classic. Just nothing that super stuck with me or stood out. It was good but not really good in terms of vocals, lyrics, or instrumentals.
Rolling Stones wie man sie kennt. Mir gefällt das Album sehr gut, eine tolle Mischung zwischen Rock, mit bluesigen Titeln, und dann natürlich die Klassiker Brown Sugar, Wild Horses. Entdeckung: Sway.
I just like this time of music. Stand-out: Can't You Hear Me Knocking
The front half is stacked: "Brown Sugar", "Sway", "Wild Horses", "Can You Hear Me Knocking" are all great songs, and very consistent in vibe. Overall, Sticky Fingers is a very consistent album, (save the skronky blues song, "You Gotta Move"). There's a sense of nostalgia or longing that weaves itself through the songs. Probably my favorite Stones record.
Not as bad as I thought. Groovy and bluesy
Great album
Hot damn. I was all set to give this 3 or even possibly 2 stars after the first listen. I've never been a big Rolling Stones fan, but was kind of expecting this album to wow me. And that first spin, it just didn't. There were a few songs I enjoyed here and there but it mostly was forgettable. But the second time around? I cranked up the volume and all of a sudden it was like a different album. Standout songs: Wild Horses, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sister Morphine, Moonlight Mile.
I don’t know the Stones well by albums, just by their hits so this was a nice first album to begin the deep dive into a band that’s overdue for it. Favorite Songs: Wild Horses / Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
It is not lost on me they're good, but they don't make the jump. 8.5/10 Favorite Song: Wild Horses
Not my favourite Rolling Stones record, but very decent, like the bluesiness
Finally a good fucking Rolling Stones album
Always a classic, was great to be reminded of what a gold mine the rolling stones are for a feel good listen
Pre-listening thoughts: dear god more Rolling Stones. I feel like we just got one 😭 kind of needed a longer break but whatever maybe I’ll Stockholm syndrome myself into really enjoying them Post/during listening thoughts: okay I concede there are some bangers on here. I also want to say I don’t DISLIKE The Rolling Stones I just feel like their albums we’ve gotten have a ton of filler in a style their radio hits didn’t really dabble in so it was jarring. THIS is the goddamn stones album I was looking for (and Some Girls. Why isn’t that on this list????). It has a decent amount of their hits but also it doesn’t really feel like it’s filled with blues from a group that can’t make it super well. First three track run is really good stuff. 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: I don’t think so but if there is one stones album we’ve gotten so far that I’d recommend it would be this one Fav tracks: Brown Sugar, Sway, Wild Horses, Bitch Least fav tracks: You Gotta Move
Classic Rolling Stones. Some brilliant songs, some good songs.
I should probably like the Stones more than I do. Brown Sugar and Wild Horses are the high points here in a standard Stones set.
Honestly better than I expected. They’re pretty basic rock but it’s also good. I don’t think it’s one of the millions of rock albums you ever neeeeed to listen to but I did like it.
3.5
I understand why Rolling Stones are considered classic, very solid tracklist even if I would not put their songs on a playlist. I wouldn't say it is timeless but it is definitely the foundation for modern rock.
I can't wait to see what everyone else rates this album, because I was once again surprised by how much I enjoyed a new (to me) Stones album.
Great, good classic rock
This was a fun album!
Solid album, several classic Stones bangers on it!
I mean Brown Sugar alone pops this album into 3 stars, and Wild Horses, Can't You Hear Me Knocking and the rest bump it up to 4. Not sure I'll listen all the time, but a good one for the collection.
Surprising range, country, jazz, latin influences. Slow songs remind me of Floyd Best track - Can't you hear me knocking Last track Moonlight Mile a good closer
Very bluesy and nice in the ears, still no Beatles though 😆. The stones definitely stuck to their type of sound.
4/5
Not my thing but obviously quite good
A fun album and a definite classic!
7/10. Dated but still relevant. Good find🤝🏽.
This is a big improvement on their last album I heard (Aftermath). The songs here are much more fleshed out and personal, a small issue I had with the last record was that too many of the songs felt sort of generic sounding, but that is mostly mitigated here to a few tracks, I think this a great improvement, not perfect but a step up for sure. For a more in depth review, I thought the 1st half of the album dragged on a little bit with a few songs, which is a bad thing on a 10 song album, but the second half really shined and delivered some great stuff, I hope their later albums continue that when I one day listen to them. Rating: Great (4.1 Stars) Favorite Tracks: Wild Horse (Best Track On First Half), I Got The Blues, Sister Morphine, and Bitch.
Great album
Really good, with a few fillers stopping it from being a 5. Can you hear me knocking had 4/5 plays over the weekend. So close to a 5 but not quite 4.5/5
Oof this was great. Brown sugar and wild horses at the start are two absolute belters then holds its own throughout. Close to a 5/5
good stuff
Album #3 in a string of 4 straight killer albums from the Stones. In my opinion, it was their peak season of creativity and writing (1968-1972). Beggars, Bleed, Sticky and Exile. I assume this stretch coincided with founder Brian Jones getting ousted (then tragically passing away). Jagger/Richards took on the song writing and Jimmy Miller was hired for album production. All my favorite Stone songs come out of this period. I don’t know if any of the other 3 are on this list (I haven’t come across them yet) but should be. Exile is my favorite Stones album, but Sticky is a real treat and holds up. Beggars and Exile are 5 stars for me. Bleed and Sticky are 4 stars.
Best stones album by a long shot. Cant believe it took me this long to listen to this
Enjoyed this
I've never been a fan of the Stones. Not that I'm in any camp, because the division is Beatles vs. Stones, but I've always liked the Beatles more, although it's not that I've hated the Stones a lot. What annoys me the most about them is Mick Jagger. Not only in appearance, but also his voice - the color, the diction (I don't understand half of the words he says), and I often think he's out of tune, dissonant and fake. I could be wrong, but that's how my ear perceives him. But the rest is top notch! Specifically, this album, if you abstract from his voice - there's not a bad song! So I literally enjoyed all the guitars (Keith Richards is a beast!), the riffs, the bass, and I really liked that they've inserted a lot of wind instruments into most of the songs (although it's probably just sax) which really surprised me positively. All in all, nice classic rock, without much experimentation with the music, and one of the best albums I've come across lately.
A 7
Excellent. Favourite track is Brown Sugar, but the rest is great too 4/5
One of the best albums by one of the best bands to ever do it
Is this one of the best Rolling Stones album? I think it might be. Brown Sugar (great song, Sax should be louder in the mix), Wild Horses (written by the Flying Burrito Brothers), Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch, I Got the Blues - All great songs! EDIT: Oh. I read the lyrics to Brown Sugar. I never knew they were singing that. Mick supposedly wrote this for his black wife? Or one of his several black mistresses? It's not exactly a love song. It does seem to glorify racial slavery in a sexual way... but sure we can say it's about heroin.
So I've apparently never paid attention to the lyrics of Brown Sugar before. They seem...problematic, to say the least. But that aside, this is a solid Stones album. I enjoyed almost every song.
Very good album. Enjoyed the bluesy tunes and use of horns.
Stonesy Stones playing gritty overdriven blues with a solid groove and interlocking riffs, and some more soulful, expressive songs. Pretty solid all around. Catchy too.
