Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Thanks for the leather Andy. You turned a good album into an eternal icon. Some classic songs and personal favorites. The Stones went back to their blues roots while incorporating what they learned from other tours and albums to finally reach #1.
hell yeah. catchy bunch
So bluesy.
7.5/10
Good album, a really enjoyable listen some songs I'd heard before and some new ones as well
Was pleased to have this! I really enjoyed it and had some of my favourite Rolling Stones on it. I really like Wild Horses in particular. Such great songwriting, cool and stylish. Put me in a good mood
Some of The Rolling Stones best work. “Dead Flowers” and “Moonlight Mile” will bring anyone down but in a good way.
The Stones sure know how to rock, eh? 4.5 bumped down to 4.
My favorite album of all time is “Exile on Mainstreet” and my love for that album bleeds over into an affection for this whole Stones era, even though I’m not a big Rolling Stones fan. Their song “Torn and Frayed” was such an apt way to describe the band at this time. Brian Jones - the heart of the first iteration of the band - was dead. They had been the biggest rock & roll band in the world for a decade but were flat broke. They had arguably just killed someone and maybe killed the peace and love dream of the 60’s as a whole. Half of them were hooked on hard drugs and the other half were drunk. They were wearing blousy shirts, sleeping all day and staying up all night and living in castles. And you know who does that? Vampires. They were just a bunch of drug-addicted vampires waving guns at Frenchmen and stealing other people’s music. It was a wild time for The Rolling Stones and I’m glad to be able to hear what came out of it.
I've not heard much Rolling Stones before and wasn't expecting it to be that good, but I was pleasantly surprised. Nice varied music and lyrics.

Pretty good.
7.5/10. WTF, 1,001 Albums Generator??? Marianne Faithfull died yesterday, and you had the audacity to generate me a Rolling Stones album??? I mean, I'm aware that this is completely random, but still. I find this pick to be quite funny. Anyway, the album is cool, and it has a lot of great songs on it!!! :)
This album is incredibly strong. The Rolling Stones have a lot of talent at building songs that just sound like they couldn't have been done any other way. Wild Horses is my favourite on the album. Great album to include on the list.
Great album
REALLY loved this one, might be my favourite so far, a lot of inspiration from Country clearly, which is probably my least favourite genre but it was still fantastic
The rolling stones is one of the most iconic rock bands of all time, and even tho they're considered more of a singles band than an album band, this album is amazing. Way more varied than I would have expected. Solid with some highs, expecially int he first half, but overrall amazing
I once read a review that took brown sugar down a notch for me noting the raunchy ass opening riff, then built upon with layers that added little - ie strummed acoustic guitar. They used it as a metaphor for the whole album but I disagree. That's a ripping sax. Mr. Watt's toms sound like withdrawal kicking in on sister morphine. Thats a helluva organ on the blues one. Billy preston!? Dead flowers nice stones funny country classic. Wild horses has some beautiful parts. I like the harmonics. They wrote good songs these ones. Muscle Shoals shit. Often you can tell keith and mick apart, but not always was I sure. Well placed guitar bits from both, making the old new again. They were good at blues, they were good at country. At country blues they seem nearly untouchable.
Kinda jam band type vibes but still those catchy stones guitar lines
Enjoyed this one, never listened to The Rolling Stones much
Enjoyed it more than Exile On Main Street. The songs are more detailed and musical. There are some nice balads on here as well. Would give it 3.5 if I could.
First time I’ve listened to a whole stones album and was pleasantly surprised didn’t think it would be my kind of thing
There's not a whole lot you can say about this one. An iconic band in their prime. Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and Bitch are the well known songs and they hold up. A great album and a fantastic way to spend 46 minutes and 15 seconds. Also, I'm sure the album cover had a lot of people clutching at their pearls back in 1971. <Spın̈al Tap Joke Here>
Rolling Stones suffer from same issue as Queen, Greatest Hits-itus. However, this album is still full of silky cool, sexy rock n roll. Has brown sugar aged badly? I dunno
First half is amazing.
luuuuurv
Good
Don't think I consider myself a blues rock enjoyer, but some songs on here are great. Nothing I'd add to my daily rotation or favorites, but I'd pick up a vinyl to enjoy listening to it again.
I’d never listened to this album through but knew many of the songs already. It’s got some bangers
Might be considered Rolling Stones beat by many but for me there are later albums that I think are better so have to give it a 4 star.
Jagger Swagger
A high point for the stones. Good all through.
good blues-based rock record, first one after Brian Jones.
With the exception of “You got to Move”, every song is really solid and super enjoyable. You can tell it’s early 70’s rock and roll, but the Stones make it iconic. I think this is my favorite Stones album but I’m no expert Best Song: Wild Horses Rating: 7.5/10 4 Stars
Perhaps my all-time favorite Stones album. The first half alone is amazing. the second half drags in some places or else I'd give it 5 stars. If there's 4 1/2, I'd rank it there.
87/100. A great blues rock record. In my opinion, this is probably The Rolling Stones’ strongest album, packed with classic tracks throughout.
Classics like Wild Horses, can't you hear me knocking, brown sugar. +4
Classic record - song that I totally forgot about and love is Dead Flowers. I slept on the stones for too long - as noted earlier glad I got to see them live. Giving a 4 - not a 5 but I suppose good be if I gave this multiple spins and gave deep cuts a chance.
On one hand this has some of my favourite Stones songs - Can't You Hear Me Knocking; Bitch; Sway. On the other hand, it definitely has some filler; Sister Morphine is unlistenable. Still their best era, I think.
Can't go wrong with the classics
Some great sounds, but some country jank. Still my favorite Stones album
Yeah, pretty good! Can't you hear me knocking was a favorite track
That’s a pretty banging album
Cool album. Liked it.
Never really listened to a Rolling Stones album before this but really enjoyed it. It has a great blues/rock balance. I bet it was incredible to see them play this live when they were in their prime. Listen out for the drummer’s signature fill that he seems to use in every breakdown.
I’ve never listened to this album in full. Wild Horses will forever get me
A classic by the stones with 3/4 top tier tracks. I still think they are a touch over rated but its difficult to argue with this
I love me some dirty blues rock
4.2
I've never understood that much hype about "The rolling stones". I mean, this is great album all in all, but it's not breathtaking. You'll get some cool saxophone moments in this rock album, some oldschool sounding blues and good guitar solos
Good album, some great songs. There were also some songs I didn’t like at all.
Really good blues/rock mix on this album. A couple songs I could do without keep it from a 5 but overall a great one.
This was our 250th album. This album is kind of why I did this challenge. Never really cared for the Stones, but this album was pretty good, provided you don’t listen to the words of Brown Sugar.
Better than the Let it Bleed. Started off strong. I thought that blues was a very American genre so it is very surprising listening to UK bands emulating the sound. Low 4.
I listened to this in the morning now it’s night and I’m eepy and dont remember my thoughts except for I think I thought 4
Love the stones. Some bangers on this one but a few were a little lackluster
Liked it more than other Rolling Stones albums we’ve had. Wild horses doesn’t feel like a song I should like, but I’ve always loved it. That song bumps the album up to a 4
Hell yeah. Brown Sugar ranks highly on the list of songs I may not be allowed to like anymore, right up there with Under My Thumb (wait are they all Stones songs?) Sway was fun!
9/10
Fun fact the whole reason I started this is because of this album. I was like damn I’ve never listened to a single Rolling Stones album and then I saw it was on the 1001 list and I was like shit I haven’t listened to a LOT of albums. Well here I am, 250 albums later. Anyway you don’t fucking care you don’t know me. I still don’t know how I should take Brown Sugar. Like. I’m not mad that Mick Jagger has a thing for black women. But why’s it gotta be about slavery in the start. And then young girl is VERY MUCH CLOSE to losing them a star. There’s some gold on here. There’s also some terrible British rock band thinks they can do the blues on here which is always fucking dreadful. Unlistenable.
This was a great album. But the experience of actually having sticky fingers? Horrible. I feel like I can't touch anything until I wash my hands. 0/5 experience, wouldn't recommend.
More robust than I thought the Stones would be.
This wasn’t as good as Let It Bleed to me. The hits on this album (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses) aren’t really my favorites from the band. Can’t Hear You Knocking drags a little too long. And I can do without The Rolling Stones saying You Gotta Move ever again. Still, you can’t go wrong with The Rolling Stones, even if it isn’t peak. Favorite track: Wild Horses Other hits: Moonlight Mile, Bitch, Brown Sugar, Sway, Dead Flowers
Why are his fingers sticky…..? Ew
Can we still listen to Brown Sugar? Has it been cancelled? Regardless of the answers to those questions, it’s still rock n roll and I love it! What an absolute jam. Overall, this was a better Stones record than Beggars Banquet. Wild Horses is their best ballad. I really like Bitch. Dead Flowers was also a stand out track for me. I breezed through this album and will happily listen again.
7/10 I'm not a huge Rolling Stones fan but this is one of their best records hands down. I enjoyed listening to this. 12-11-2024
The fact I enjoyed this despite the lyrics of Brown Sugar really underlines how good it is.
Very good classic, I guess I have nothing more to say
Rock with some brass, got very interesting songs
I actually thought i should like it more. It was supposed to be for me, all moody and drug-influenced. But on the other hand it seems rather safe and lacking in energy. Should be a 5. I hope that those junkie-grandpas are doing more suitable drugs for them. I highly recommend cocaine for them.
Started out really strong and the second half was just okay. I enjoyed the classic rock vibes and bluesy riffs mixed in. I would listen to this again. Favorite songs were: Brown Sugar Wild Horses 7/10
Enjoyed this. Highlights, aside from the hits, are Dead Flowers & Moonlight Mile.
Just an incredible selection of songs. Sure, it’s no Beggar’s Banquet nor Exile, but still the work of an amazing band in their prime.
The album cover is just fucking rank isnt it
another album i'm familiar with but had never listened to in full lovely sunday evening listen, will be coming back to this one but it's still not my favourite stones record (despite wild horses being my favourite song of theirs) best song: wild horses worst song: n/a
I'm not been a big fan of the Stones over the years, and especially not the deep cuts on their albums. The local radio stations here have always over played them. I've enjoyed some of their recent albums, which even surprised myself! Anywho....Can't you hear me knockin is one of my fav all times songs. Must be my satin shoes and cocaine eyes??
One of the best Stones albums. Sticky Fingers is less in your face than some of their work. Blues, country, rock, it’s all there. Dead Flowers is probably only second to Loving Cup.
I always knew the band, but I never knew their music. I’m glad I finally got a chance to explore a record by them. It’s a solid rock album overall, but admittedly some songs feel like they meander for a bit. I think they’re a good band, but I wouldn’t say they’re “the greatest rock band of all time” good, as many critics and magazines claim. Though, this record is the only reference I have for the band, so who knows, maybe they have another record on this list that changes my mind? Favorite track: Wild Horses
A lot of great tracks but a decent amount of filler holds it back from a five star rating.
What a colourful work of art this is ... I know I've dreamed you A sin and a lie I have my freedom But I don't have much time Faith has been broken Tears must be cried Let's do some living After we die. And then there's I Got the Blues: In the silk sheet of time I will find peace of mind Love is a bed full of blues. It's one of those albums where you can feel the creativity growing from bare ground - every piece of weather important to the garden it creates. Didn't enjoy every track ... but Moonlight Mile grabbed another star, right at the end.
Well this is why the album generator is great. I came to this with the preconception that the best two tracks would be 'Brown Sugar' and 'Wild Horses' and that the rest of the album would be made up of similar but inferior typical Stones tracks. I was so wrong, my preconception was a misconception! It starts with one of THE classic riffs, Keith doing what he did best. The lyrics are questionable but there's no denying it's a fantastic track. Charlie plays his part, driving it along, full of rhythm. He underpins the whole album so brilliantly, never flashy but always nails it. 2 minutes 45 seconds into 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' was when the album changed for me, it goes from a decent rocker into the most sublime 5 minute jam, suddenly we're elevated into different musical territory! Mick Taylor plays his part but it's not just his guitar, there so much depth and texture throughout the album. 'I Got The Blues' is great, no doubt influenced by Otis Redding. 'Sister Morphine' and "Dead Flowers' are so good, two druggy songs but completely different styles. 'Moonlight Mile' is a beautiful closer, so rich, taking their sound to places I never expected. I've listen to this so much in the last few days. I thought I knew the Stones, but that was only from their singles, I didn't think there was much more to them. How stupid was I?!! It's pushing a 5 but for me is just let down by a couple of weaker tracks in the middle. But this is still a great listen and I'll keep coming back to it for the tracks I mentioned.
Rock and roll! This album actually gets better the further in you go. Some awesome solos and an even better general noise. Loved the inclusion of organs and keys. A proper classic and lived up better to what I hoped for from the first Stones album on this list.
IMHO 2 of the best Stones songs on this album.
I'm not a fan of the Stones. I've found myself sneering in mind when I encounter them. Poncy arrogant rockstars, all glam and no substance. Maraccas and Parodies on the 'Kenny Everett Video Cassette' show. What's to enjoy? It's just not my energy. But ... Yeah, it's got something for me now and I'm enjoying listening. 4 stars.
Fantastic album that fell short of a 5 with the last few songs. 4/5
Very solid rock record
It’s a Stones album, so it’s pretty good, but it’s no Beggars Banquet.
The roots of the Stones, bluesy and still filled with hits.
I don't want to give it a high score, but I caught myself jamming out to it repeatedly. And I have a really good Rolling Stones concert story, so I give the old fuckers a break.
Brown Sugar // Wild Horses // Can’t You Hear Me Knocking // I Got The Blues // Sister Morphine 4.5/5
Peak stones
One rarely listens to a whole stones record. There's are free stones record worth listening to. Love Jagger. They don't make complete albums like the Beatles
out of all the rolling stones i’ve heard, this is probably one of my favourite ones, really good
I appreciate The Stones, and this album in particular. No wall of sound effort, stripped down to basic R&R (ok, blues).
I always thought of Rolling Stones as a simple rock band but this album definitely stretches out what they could do. Lots of good heartfelt ballads mixed in with rock and roll. Good album.
So many albums of Brits trying to be Southern bluesmen so far but they definitely pull it off better than Led Zeppelin . Still, some great hits here and rhythm guitar tracks that I never really listened to before.
Solid Stones
Solid Rolling Stones - excellent
Who doesn't love the Rolling Stones!
The bangers really carried this album in my opinion.
Has my favorite Stones song on it. Wild Horses. Love this album
This is more of a mix than I had anticipated, and while I think I've listened to some other albums around this era of the Stones (Let it Bleed, Hot Rocks), I don't think I've given this one a full listen. Can't You Hear Me Knocking lost me a bit, but Bitch brought it back around. Overall, a good listen.
No frills, straight forward rock and blues. Exactly what I expected from this era of the Stones.
Not a bad song here
Overall this is the best Rolling Stones album, in my opinion.
From the first couple moments of the album, you can tell that it's going to be a good one. It is a bit top heavy, imo, but the variation in style from song to song helps keep everything interesting and keeps the listener invested and engaged. My only real complaint is about the singing. They're not able to change the vocal style at all when the rest of the band does. So, there's a few songs where the raspy rock singing just doesn't really fit. It does work well for a lot of the songs, though. Favorite Song(s): Brown Sugar, I Got the Blues
Real variety in sounds and style across the tracks, with some great instrumentation choices. Strong blues, soul, and country influences throughout give it cohesion.
04/10/24 Not a bad album.
great album
cool
Not a huge Stones fan, but there were some good ones in there.
I mean yes, fuck. If rocks. Great album. -1 for overplaying because I’m petty.
++: Brown Sugar, Sway, Can't You Heart Me Knocking, Sister Morphine, Dead Flowers +: You Gotta Move, Bitch, I Got the Blues, Moonlight Mile +-: Wild Horses 9,0/10
A while ago I got an earlier Stones album and they improved like crazy. The songs have more depth and the entire album is better quality. I finally understand why people like this band.
Both a fun and a heavy album, pairs well with a couple of cigarettes
Pretty good, had heard most of it as a kid growing up.
Now this is why people must like the Stones so much. Good overall blues and rock album
Very good, one of the classics.
I’ve never been a big Stones fan, but I appreciate how great this album is. Probably an unpopular opinion, but the ballads take me out of it even though the sequencing is good.
Really enjoyed it
From the first opening guitar notes it’s still unmistakably classic stones. Any album with wild horses and sister morphine is worth the listen. The production of the era of a what blows me away the most, the space in the mix and the mostly live nature of the recording make for a visceral experience. This album seems to be an inflection point between their signature brit r&b and country influences, which mostly work great but dead flowers is song I never need to hear again.
I love Wild Horses. Good album. It stricks a lot of different moods.
Maybe I'm just super lucky because I've had a good run with albums so far. This was great (as to be expected), I love The Rolling Stones. Wild Horses was probably my favourite track on the album. Brown Sugar sent me down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out if Foreigner sampled Brown Sugar for their track Hot Blooded which was fun (couldn't find anything concrete so jury's still out). Overall I think it was just fantatsic, the album was cohesive, had me bopping along, and I can't fault it. That being said, I don't think I was in love with it enough to give it a 5/5.
aka The Acclaimed Album that does not have the bulk of their biggest hits but is certainly the fan and critical darling.
Really liked this album! Had not listened to in full prior to this and I am glad that I have now
Classic Stones.
I like playing Wild Horses on my acoustic guitar
An enjoyable, strong album that doesn't seem to miss a beat. It feels quite timeless for the most part, though it does show its age at points as well. Wild Horses is my favourite from the album.
This album is a classic, and I’ve listened to it many times. I’ve always felt like the Stones tilted towards country on this album, which worked well for them. But it’s not as consistently successful as Exile. I listened with more critical ears today. Brown Sugar unnecessarily glorifies slavery and rape, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is unmelodic and goes on for way too long, I Got the Blues is boring, and Sister Morphine drags. Wild Horses is one of the best Stones songs ever— it stands out as an intimate, reflective track with perfect timing. And Moonlight Mile is a satisfying way to end the album.
Generic rock but not bad
could i write poetry to this? y
Cool
There are some classics and some songs that are just ok. I do enjoy when the Stones do country.
You can never go wrong with some classic Stones.
This was my first Rolling Stones album in this project and it was a great one. “Wild horses” This is blues rock and roll at its finest.
Before listening, the only thing I knew about this album was the fun sleeve with a working zipper. After listening I think this album is pretty fun. It's not the same style of song all the way through which keeps it fresh. I'm rounding up from 3.5 because I'm not sold on the vocals.
Is this their best known album? I don't keep track of these stones as they roll. This might be my favorite of their albums (though I can't confirm not seeing my other ratings). Regardless, felt like a great rock/blues album. Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, and Can't You Hear Me Knocking were all keepers. Hopefully this is the last stones album. At this point with so little albums left the variety has to be there now that we have moved past so many of these.
Been waiting on this one, Stones albums are always welcome for me though mileage may vary. Exile on Main St, often heralded as their best, was our first, and it was a bit of a dud for me. This one might actually be my favorite, at least of those we've heard in this process. This one incorporates the blues, similar to what they were doing on Exile, but with the addition of some actual classic songs. "Brown Sugar" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" are both bangers I've heard before, and the deeper cuts on here are great too, including the bluesy explorations. I think we could probably cut one or two Stones albums from this list, but certainly not this one, I'm giving this the crown. Just a really strong, hearty blues-rock album, and yeah, where Exile lacked hits, this one does not. Excellent work from Mick and the gang. Favorite tracks: Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Wild Hordes, I Got the Blues, Bitch, Dead Flowers. Album art: A dangerous close-up on a pair of jeans. There looks to be something in this guy's right pocket, PLEASE tell me there's something in his right pocket. It's an iconic cover, sure, but best Stones cover for me has to be Let It Bleed. 4.5/5
Went in expecting just a really great rock and roll record, but in truth, it's just so much more. So many different genres were explored here. Strong songwriting and great vocals from Mick and the band sound more cohesive here than I've really ever heard previously from a Rolling Stones record. It's far from a perfect album though, You Gotta Move is a huge stinker among the great songs here. Besides the weaker stuff, it's genuinely really great and deserves the praise and attention it receives.
classic, but not quite as good as its reputation might suggest. Wild horses is an all time great, Brown sugar is probably problematic nowadays (but good if you ignore that), can't you hear me knocking is pretty good (if too long), rest of it could be considered filler. Blues influence is clear (at least compared with what the Stone became)
This is my favourite Stones album - although their run of albums from the late 60’s to early 70’s all make good candidates. There are some songs on here that remind me a little of Guns N Roses on their Use Your Illusion I - I know, controversial
You can see why they got so famous. Not a lot of edge, compared to modern music. But you can tell how they where cutting edge for their time.
Raw, energetic, brilliant
bom
I expected everything on this album to sound very much in the same vain as Brown Sugar, but was pleasantly surprised by how much the Rolling Stones step into different genres. When I think of the Rolling Stones, I reactively think, “That rock and roll band where all the members are around 400 years old.” However, I’m realising that simply calling them a rock and roll band diminishes their other tracks that don’t step much into this genre, and are still pretty good. Glad I listened to this in full, but not happy that I read the album name.
Another classic album, one of the best by the Stones in my opinion. It definitely deserves to be on this list.
Very good album. Sometimes the lyrics is kinda bad and not that much into the Rolling Stones. But this is probably their best album
Felt unique.
This was good. Weird album cover though
I am generally a fan of the Stones, though I'm not as rabid as others, and prefer The Who and Led Zep among their contemporaries. This is a good record, with several classics, but is not a great record. As with many of their albums, there is definitely filler.
01) Brown Sugar - 10,0 02) Sway - 8,0 03) Wild Horses - 10,0 04) Can't You Hear Me Knocking - 8,0 05) You Gotta Move - 8,0 06) Bitch - 8,5 07) I Got the Blues - 8,0 08) Sister Morphine - 8,5 09) Dead Flowers - 8,5 10) Moonlight Mile - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,55 (86/100) Current ranking: 52/264
Amazing album. I listened to every song and enjoyed every single one of them.
This is the only Rolling Stones album I've ever heard - and it's my second time hearing it. I've always found this album oddly catchy, especially with the songs 'Sway' and 'Wild Horses', the latter of which is a blatant country rock track ... not a genre I previously associated the Stones with. They pull it off quite well though and it ends up being my favorite song here - it's a very summery, vibrant, and open track, very nicely capturing this idea of a horse running free. More than anything, I respect how eclectic this album can be - with the song 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking' drawing from the worlds of psychedelic, Krautrock, and jazz fusion popular at the time. 'Bitch' carries that gritty weight I was expecting out of the Rolling Stones with an absolutely killer bassline, driving riff, and horn section. 'Sister Morphine' is another one of my favorite songs here, it's a tragic, hazy tale about drug addiction that's delivered over one of the more somber acoustic and western-sounding pieces of instrumentation. The album's drug-related themes come to a head on this one track, it's quite climactic and cinematic in that sense. I feel like this is an unconventional RS album, though I haven't heard enough of their music to make that assertion. Either way, it's a collection of some damn great early 70s songs with impeccable production value.
Favorite Stones album that I have gotten on this list so far. Can you hear me knockin is probably my favorite Stones song. The album lingers a bit and is a lot slower/bluesy? than the others I have heard. Solid listen even if it overstays its welcome a bit. 7/10
Classic with 3-4 absolute classics, plus 3-4 fringe classics along with a couple of countryfied tracks, solid top to bottom
I've listened before, but not for a long time. A few classics here but more than half of this album doesn't really resonate or feel that memorable to me. "My heart is beating louder than a big bass drum, alright"
I was never a big Stones' fan, but I must say that their work is impressive. Several great songs in here - some that I knew and some that I \"discovered\" (don't remember hearing before, but probably have). I know that I have seen or even owned a copy with the original working zipper - maybe it was one of my brothers who had it.
The more I know this band the more I respect them and learn to love it ;-)
This album made me realize I’m a bigger stones fan than I thought… I was doing the puzzle and it started to repeat and I was cool with listening again.
. Side 1 6 stars Side 2 4 stars I know that averages to 5 …
This is practically a perfect album. 4 stars. I'm a bit soft on the most country sounding songs but the rest is so inspired and activated.
Pretty classic - solid rockers with some down tempo numbers. I'm not a fan of the slower ones, but I suppose it's the contrast between songs like "Bitch". It's certainly held up over the years thanks to the strong radio hits. 3.9
The Stones went on a historic 4 album run. For me, this ranks behind Exile On Main, the writing and arrangements on that album are superior. My favorite is Beggars Banquet, exelent songwriting with some of the deepest heartfelt Stones work. Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers represent the pop side of the Stones best
This one I liked a lot more on the second listen. Short and to the point with a lot of decent songs. I’m usually not as big a fan of The Rolling Stones compared to most. And while some songs still bored me I found something enjoyable about most. Rating: 3.9
Very consistent and high quality throughout
Got laid while this was playing, hell yeah 😎
There are a lot of all time classics on this album. Even if the lyrics for "brown sugar" haven't aged well, the sound has.
Except for you gotta move I think this is a great album. I wish i could give albums 4,5 though because I don’t think it is as strong as other albums I’ve rated 5 but it’s definitely better than albums I’ve rated 4. So i’m going with 4
The best Rolling Bones I've had come up so far. It's more than just medicore blues covers and doesn't go off the rails too much.
3.8/5 listened 2x
Not their best, but pretty enjoyable still
Probably my fav Stones album from this list.
Well, there we go - it turns out I’m definitely a Rolling Stones fan.
great
On va droit au but. "Brown Sugar".
A classic that I had never listened to in full.
Highlights: Brown Sugar, Bitch, I got the Blues least fav : Sister Morphine
Honestly liked this a lot.
I am not a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, but this is one record that I really do enjoy.
First half of the album is as good as any you'll ever hear. Second half is still really strong, but feels like a letdown
Wild Horses and Brown Sugar are great, the rest not so much
Good shit would listen to more.
This really is the sound that I will always think of when someone mentions The Rolling Stones.
This is probably the best Stones album I've had on this list yet.
Goeie klassieker
Strong 7, solid album with some good hits but a few forgettable ones like You’ve got the blues
Almost feels more like a greatest hits album than a regular one. Has a ton of great songs on it, my favorites being wild horses and moonlight mile.
Flashy, fun and just shy holding my attention the entire time.
Brown Sugar is my favorite of this album!
Fav: Sway Least Fav: You Gotta Move
-very bluesy record, like it a lot -favorite tracks: bitch, wild horses, can’t you hear me knocking, dead flowers
Much less cringy than "Aftermath" (setting aside "Brown Sugar", and/or maybe I just paid less attention overall to lyrics); much more rocking. I remember why I liked the Stones now.
rolling stones man. it's a solid album.
It's just top notch Stones. 3 big singles, and the other songs are great. "I've Got the Blues" is a great slow blues song I didn't expect from them.
I've listened before, but not for a long time. A few classics here but more than half of this album doesn't really resonate or feel that memorable to me. "My heart is beating louder than a big bass drum, alright"
This is The Rolling Stones in a MUCH better place than their last album. I thoroughly enjoyed many tracks, and although they lost me on a couple (Sway kinda bored me), I still really enjoyed it enough to give it a 4. Rolling Stones aren’t in 5 range yet, but Aftermath is still on its way.
i liked it, nothing stood out to me to comment on tho sorry
Alku tosiaan susi... Uskomattomuus odottaa.. 5 star pitöisi antaa mutta... Ei kehtaa.. kun huo ojdesta maininta...
Great, but not quite a 5
Amazing guitar solos.
2 Rolling Stones albums back to back, enjoyed this one more, brown sugar the standout
The top five songs (Brown Sugar, Bitch, Dead Flowers, Wild Horses, and Can't You Hear Me Knocking) get this album to 4 stars or B+ for me, but the lesser songs prevent me from giving 5 stars.
Can't You Hear Me Knocking'. De eerste is een country-rock masterpiece. 'Eagles done right' zeg maar. 8/10 Highlights: Wild Horses Can't You Hear Me Knocking Dead Flowers Moonlight Mile
Never heared this whole album before, but within the first few seconds I´m already familar with this sound. Just the Stones. Unique voice, nice guitar-riffs, bluesy songs, lovely saxophone. 👄👅 Some of their well-known songs "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses" and "Dead Flowers". Very round album. Favourite: "Bitch", "Sister Morphine"
7/10
I had formed the opinion that the Stones were over rated, even though I hadn't really listened to them, only knowing their big overplayed radio hits. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this album. There's a good variety amongst the tracks, but more than that there's an overall feel that's hard to describe, but works. There's a couple of songs that didn't quite land with me (what the hell was Dead Flowers?), but there is no denying this is a good album.
Didn't know what to expect, I thought it was going to be more poppish
As good as it gets for Stones albums. This and Let it Bleed and Exile and the best of their catalog. Really likes the blues inspiration and “Can’t you hear me knocking” is just and unbelievable song. 4/5 Will listen again
Super slay with so many cool things. Heheh yes so specific. Not really my style but I still really really enjoy and defs will listen again. Works rlly well as a whole album listen vs just individual songs
Second Stones album in a week. Just as good, if not better than the last one.
A classic blues rock album by the Rolling Stones—not my personal favourite, but it's getting up there. Sister Morphine, Wild Horses, Moonlight Mile and Brown Sugar are some of the best songs they've ever written. Everything else holds up; there are lower points on the album but nothing that warrants a skip. I really enjoy listening to this record as a whole.
Rockin' and rollin.
Second stones album I've got and I enjoyed it! Lots of really good tracks on this record with some pretty decent variety. The singles are all good, popular but not-too-popular tracks. Dare I say this might be my favourite Stones record!
Some really great songs on here, a couple that annoy me, so, a 4!
Better than Beggar's Banquet. I would change the rating of that one to 3.
3.75 stars. The Stones construct their songs well, whether they are upbeat or slower, more emotional tracks. The elements are thoughtfully added together, some string sections and satisfying drum crashes, and Mick Jagger performs all the vocals well. A couple of big hits on here like "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses." "Bitch" and "Dead Flowers" are good songs too. I'm not usually a fan of classic rock, nor do I resonate with wanting a visit from Sister Morphine, but this was a pleasant listen.
Such an Amazing album, but such a shame that Sister Morphine got always scratched on original LP because of the métal zipper cover !!!! And again, i always think that Dead Flowers is not AT the right places on the b-side... Right after Sister Morphine!!! Not a great move
90/100
Ok boomer, I will grant you, this one is decent. I’ve been underwhelmed by all the other Stones albums on this list but this one is my favourite.
3.6 stars rounded up. Heroin chic.
Classic
4 stars
Nice
Hated the creepy first song and thought I would hate it all, but surprisingly won me over, and I can see why people like them
Blues Rock. Very solid album. Love all the bluesy vibes, amazing guitar tone. Strong vocals, fun lyrics. The standout is the guitar performance on this record. Very passionate riffs and solos. Great bass work all over the album, especially in some of the slower songs. Not an entirely cohesive album, many genre jumps between songs that don't always work out, but it's overall a great collection of individual songs with strong performances throughout. Might revisit, mostly makes me want to visit other The Rolling Stones records. 4/5
Excellent
My first play through I thought it was just okay, really enjoyed the second listen to several songs. My favorite was “Wild Horses” and “Sister Morphine”
Liked Songs Brown Sugar Wild Horses Can't You Hear Me Knocking Dead Flowers
7/10 I was dreading a Stones album, so this was a hugely pleasant surprise. Liked it quite a bit, good album. Excellent musicianship, layered sound, vocals didn’t grate in the way I expected them to. Maintained a cohesive blues rock style whilst hopping around genres. Some of the blues jam sections were overlong and aimless. some of the positives actually ended up as negatives - hearing posh boys from Richmond do delta blues or country rock (including Jagger doing pastiche accents) felt hugely inauthentic at best, cynical and exploitative at worst. Overall this didn’t grab my own soul but I can see why it is considered a great album by a top band Best: Wild Horses
Sticky Fingers indeed
Decent album, just not the band for me.
4/5 Best Track: Wild Horses
Hey listen! Can’t You Hear Me Knocking? You Gotta Move when you listen to this album.
Still not the biggest fan of them and I think their less pop-sounding stuff is better but this has a lot of variety and a lot to like on it. Sister Morphine was my favorite.
Probably the best stones album. Probably.
This was most certainly an album. The songs on here were very good. probably an 8/10 #54
Pretty good Stones album as a whole, but doesn’t really have any of my favorite songs of theirs on it.
Another artist I am familiar with but haven't taken the time to listen to everything they've released. I have found in the past that the Stones are about 50/50 with me. Sometimes I find something by them I really love and other times they just annoy. It's rare that I listen to them in whole album chunks though so let's see how Sticky Fingers does. I know the vinyl sleeve for this album had a working zipper that revealed a piece of underwear. I will keep that concept in mind as I listen to see if thematically the music is about taking a man's pants off. And why would the man have sticky fingers? Let's find out! Ok, so we start with a little interracial sex. Absolutely nothing wrong with that but the way it has been lyricized here is very cringey. I could see this offending some people and is most likely the Stone's MO with the song and the album art in general. They are ushering in a new age of rock and roll and it's going to be right there in your face and they don't give a shit how you feel about it! Musically, I actually kind of found this song pretty catchy. Same with Sway. They introduce the album being about sex and drugs and rock and roll mannnnn. But hold on... The Stones have a softer side... Oh but it's a beautiful lullaby that might be about a heroine overdose? But damn it, it's not bad and has solidified itself in pop culture. I honestly don't think I even had a clue this was a Stone's song. OK another sex drugs and rock and roll song next. Starting to see a pattern, but it's interesting and varied enough that I actually am enjoying it. I enjoyed almost every song on this album, which I honestly didn't expect because I have been so iffy on the Stones in the past. But I would say this may be one of their best albums. Despite the majority of the songs relating to drugs, the music itself is really good and I would definitely listen to most of these songs again and feel that a second listen might even solidify this as a 5 star album.
Fun, rocking and great lyrics. Had to listen to this over a couple days but really enjoyed it. Might need to revisit in a single sitting soon.
Can you hear me knocking is an all timer. Rest of album JS Softer than I like the stones but top notch soft rock
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking might be my favorite on this album. The longer version is much better than the radio edit. Too much honky tonk overall. But the good stuff is great.
Good Album! Understandable that the rolling stones be considered as the greatest or at least one of the greatest rock bands off all time!
lgtm
The Stones have been around forever, but I don't think I've ever listened to a full album of theirs. I've heard dozens of hits but really have no context as to what came out when, so hopefully this will be fun, and that there may be a few more from them on the list. With the somewhat risque cover, then opening with "Brown Sugar" this band clearly was a bit naughtier than I imagined. It's not great to think about a 60 year old singing these songs, which is about how old he was when I kind of noticed them. Thanks largely to twisted metal black. Overall it was a decent album, I was looking through their catalog to see if there was one main album that had more hits than others and most had just a couple recognizable songs, so this may actually be the best overall as I liked a lot of the filler so going to bump it up to a 4. Favorite track "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" 4/5
4.5. A perfect album has to have no skips. This one has one.
White Horses hits this morning. This is a great Stones record. Not concerned with anthems or gyration, this album is trying to throw something more heartfelt at the listener, see Moonlight Mile.
I don’t think I’d ever listened to this album all the way through just some tracks. The outstanding tracks on this album like Wild Horses and Brown Sugar were familiar and still enjoyed. The others the songs blended together for me as in I didn’t know what track I was on, but I still enjoyed it. The last two tracks started to really grow on me Dead Flowers and Moonlight Mile.
I think this is the first time I’ve ever listened to a full album from The Rolling Stones. I certainly know their hits. But this was far more country and blues focused than I was expecting. I dug it. It was a busy day so I could only listen once. But I’ll be back to listen to it again. 4/5
Classic album, one of my favorite Rolling Stone albums Top tracks: Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
4/5
Never listened to the Rolling Stones before and didn’t think I’d be one to like them but this album is great. Will definitely be listening to this again and more of their albums.
Only exile tops this in terms of stones albums. One of the greatest to ever do it. 4.5/5
Tony is saved as brown sugar on my phone
really liked this, another album where i knew a few songs but had never paid proper attention. listened with my breakfast…probably a lot more of a calm time than they’d condone….it’s a classic for a reason and i see a lot of it in the music that came after
Probably their best album, in my opinion. As a not a huge fan.
I never really considered myself a fan of The Stones but this album has a great mix of hits and b-tracks that really hit home.
Good
Going in I thought this would be a sure 5 because Wild Horses is one of my all time favorite songs. Unfortunately I didn’t love the rest of the album as much, so knocked it down to a 4.
My feelings toward this album are similar to those of yesterday’s (L.A. Woman, The Doors), another rock album from 1971. I’m still a bit ambivalent, but I did enjoy this more than the other Rolling Stones album I listened to for this project (Exile on Main Street). 3.5 rounded up
A quintessential classic rock album that I can't believe I'm just hearing for the first time
Fun, classic, and deep. A good time
It was pretty good, as all Stones albums are. However, there weren't really any songs that particularly stuck out to me and I didn't really vibe with how slow it was compared to their other music. Overall, it was still pretty good though.
Own it
Great Album
I really enjoyed this album! You can tell how much blues influenced The Stones in quite a few of these songs especially 'I got The Blues' and 'Dead Flowers'
Not to be one of those ppl who think old music is always better but… crap, they don’t make ‘em like they used to! Barely any skips and guaranteed to out me in a good mood. Brown Sugar and Can’t You Hear me Knocking are going to my playlist for sure.
Classic
For me this is one of the best Stones albums. I find most of their albums have a few good singles and a lot of filler. I find this album pleasurable from cover to cover.
Great mix of Rolling Stones styles
Have you ever been to a karaoke night and watched someone learn the actual lyrics to a song they thought they knew? Don't do "Brown Sugar" at karaoke, friends.
This album encapsulates the sound of classic rock. Not the type of music I would go out of my way to listen to, but I enjoyed nonetheless. The top half of the album is the stronger one in my opinion, however, you can feel the sound of quality musicianship and songwriting all over the record. Overall, this was the first stones record I listened to and it’s safe to say that I like it!
This was great, a lot better than I expected. Would come back.
- Pretty quintessential Stones sound throughout; there is no mistaking who this is. - \"Wild Horses\" is one hell of a track. - Would definitely listen to this album again, even if it does not continually grip me throughout.
Really enjoyed this one
Classic. Don't think I'd realized how folksy some of the olds Stones is.
+1 Stern für die Bläser ;-)
Pretty good. These chaps should go far.
"Sticky Fingers" by The Rolling Stones, released in 1971, is a gritty and raw rock album that captures the essence of the band at the peak of their creative powers. The album is filled with iconic tracks such as "Brown Sugar," "Wild Horses," and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," showcasing The Rolling Stones' signature blend of blues, rock, and soul. Mick Jagger's dynamic vocals and Keith Richards' infectious guitar riffs are on full display, backed by a tight rhythm section that drives the music forward with relentless energy. Overall, "Sticky Fingers" is a must-listen for any fan of rock music, earning a solid 4/5 rating for its musicality, energy, and lasting influence.
I'll be brave and say that this is a good album
Every song is amazing except for You Gotta Move. Ez 4.5
It took me so many relistens and so many attempts to accurately rate this album, I just couldn't pick apart how much I liked it, so I'll go with a 3.5 and rate it a 4 lol.
Fuckin awesome songs, alright album. Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Wild Horses, Bitch, Sister Morphine, Dead Flowers, Moonlight Mile = Bangers. 4/5
3.5/5
Good listen but not genre defining
