Reviews (page 5 of 14)

What a surprise, I really liked this album, very unusual sounds coming through the speakers in my ears, lol - “ do you realise “ great lyrics

Nostalgic album from college. I never got the Flaming Lips before or after this album but this one really clicked.

Do you realize? Is an all timer… but I’ve never listened to this whole album, and it was a fantastic experience. I think if I spend more time with it it’d be a 5 star.

3/8 Pretty good

Very interesting. The only song I knew prior was "She don't use jelly" which was super different from this. This gave me a lot of Gorillaz vibes. Easy listen, but nothing really grabbed my attention either.

I've definitely listened to this before. It's not one that stands out in my memory except for the title track. But I really enjoyed listening to this more closely.

This album is growing on me, I like it more each time I listen.

This is right up my alley. It's odd that I wasn't a huge fan back in 2002, but this slid me right by. That said, I'm a huge fan now. Only complain is that some of the songs are a bit long.

A bit conceptual but I like it. I think this would reward repeat listens.

𝘠𝘰𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘮𝘪 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘴 is one of those albums that feels both whimsical and quietly profound. The Flaming Lips wrap big emotions in bright, synthetic textures, letting childlike imagination coexist with melancholy and anxiety. The concept may be loose — robots, battles, a hero named Yoshimi — but the emotional throughline is surprisingly strong. The melodies are warm, the production is lush without being overbearing, and Wayne Coyne sings with that fragile, earnest tone that makes even the strangest imagery feel sincere. It’s a record that manages to be playful and reflective at the same time, and that balance is what makes it endure.

One of FL’s most consistent albums, some great melodies, and interesting choices. Minor criticism might be that perhaps it’s a smidge indulgent, maybe a little conceited but it’s hard to criticise a band for sounding like they sound and FL have always been stoically off kilter. Overall one to check out if you are not already a fan 4.1

Great album. Very high highs, without any lows, but segments of just okay.

Experimental, yet real fun ride

Me gusta.

Heard a number of these tracks before, but never the whole album. Really enjoy it.

Love this album. 4 stars. Best track - do you realise.

Almost a 5, but not quite...

Wayne Coyne is a visionary, when i first heard this album (nearly 25years ago!) I thought how can you have a frontman that can't sing. However through subsequent listens and coming across them at festivals the overall experience takes over. There is a tapestry woven that occasionally fades into background music, but despite this the standout tracks, do you realise, are you a hypnotist & the title track stand the test of time

I liked Fight Test, One more Robot, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot

Fun psychedelic romp. Peak Flaming Lips

Love this one

A really good album. Fun and experimental. I would say I like the previous album, The Soft Bulletin, a bit more - but that may be only because I've heard it more.

I was committed to give this 5 star since I loved "Soft Bulletin" when it came out. But then the "Father and Son" ripoff threw me off, and the same fuzz pedals (mainly over drums) as on Soft Bulletin sounded tiring. It’s still very original though! Then the voice and lyrics are just so overly optimistic, positive thinking, big bambi eyes take of the world which sound so detached and sarcastic to me that it has a depressing effect.

This album is actually what got me into this website. I heard about the album and while reading a review on Reddit, I saw someone post about this site. I decided to put off listening to the album until it came up on the list. 366 albums later, it FINALLY came up. The album is good. I have a really bad habit of not listening too intently to lyrics of songs, which was probably a bit detrimental to my view of this album. I still really enjoyed my listen. I love concept albums so much, especially when they're so sonically coherent like this one is. I wish I could've picked up on the themes a little more in my first listen, but oh well. That's what second, third, and fourth listens are for.

It was great, never heard of the band before!k

Familiar sounds with a twist. Awesome album cover would look out for vinyl for sure.

yoshiiiimi they don't believe meee

Loved most of this but some parts were a little weird

A pleasant surprise. Although I feel it's pretty "unique", I do detect a hint of the Floyd in the music

Was expecting an odd future-y album based off the title and cover and was not disappointed, I really liked it

I have a vivid memory of my high school girlfriend loving this album and me loving her loving it. The only problem is this album came out in 2002 and I graduated from high school in 1999.

Fun, funky sound. Catchy lyrics. Really strong , really good.

Would normally give this a 3 but after the last few albums this is easily a 4/5

First of all, the cover art is fire. Second, it feels so ahead of it's time it's amazing. Reminded me of Tame Impala, but a bit more complicated. I don't think I can listen to it regularly, but it may be a record to turn up once in a while to dissociate. Good luck to Yoshimi fighting those evil machines.

Though the melodies are stronger, the production is still on point, and the inherent weirdness of The Flaming Lips is still here. They always threatened to big as big as this album made them (if only for a short time). The melodies belie the oddness and simultenous philosophical musings of the band. Different but approachable. Best Tracks: Fight Song; Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1; Do You Realize??

Loved this album as a teen, it still holds up :)

Enjoyable pop/rock musical from The Flaming Lips is an enjoyable listen. Sort of 10CC/Byrds for the noughties. Not surprised this was turned into a stage show. Check it out.

Trivelig.

This rocks! It rocks spacey, funky, groovy. And the whole album is a trip. Lovely :)

Imagination 💭

3.5, rounded up to 4. It's fine and I probably wouldn't seek it out again, but extra mark added for how different it is. A more tolerable Radiohead.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is a very fun and atmospheric album with great melodies and lyrics that tell interesting stories. The psychedelic listening experience can feel both calming and intense at times and that makes me feel like I could listen to this album many times on repeat.

An album born out of an experience they had sharing an infamous acid trip with Len Houmous. 3.7 9/11 Do You Realised

Some great moments on this record, not an album I love but I do like it

- Fight Test er en banger - Kan virkelig godt lide det musikalske - Varierer meget men hænger alligevel godt sammen i en rød tråd

Très belle découverte

The first half especially is pretty great. They do a good job of spacing the hits out so it flows pretty well. The second half is a step down but it’s still fine. Iconic cover art. Rating: 4.1

Ojalá hayan mas albumes asi

Excellent

I have never quite heard sounds like I heard in this album.

I have heard of The Flaming Lips before but I do not think I have ever listened to their music. Track 1 starts off very groovy, I like their sound a lot. I have a lot of hope for this album based solely on the first 30 seconds. This song kind of reminds me of Gnomeo and Juliet but I don't know why. Track two is also pretty good, I feel like Tame Impala was heavily inspired by this band. I also like track 3 a lot. I believe this is track 5, I like it a lot too. This album has been very good so far to be honest. This album has been good but I am not sure if I would listen to it again in its entirety, mostly because the songs do tend to feel a little flat at times. Otherwise, the album is really good.

A nice listen. I didn’t realize I knew so many FL songs already. Worthy of another spin

Honestly, such a great album. Reminds me I should pick it up on vinyl if I stumble across it.

Liked this one

Easy to listen to.

I really liked whatever this was

I really liked this one even if it was short great album

Really good. I’ve only ever heard the singles from this album, will need to listen to the soft bulletin next.

Relistened this for the first time in forever and MAN it's good

fuck yeah absolute gold. favs are fight test, ybtpr pt 1. I dont love the more trancey stuff like the hypnotist on its own but it works with the album

It's too good. The more the album progresses, the more I fall in love with it. It feels like humans are on war with the robots but there is no winner. It's electrical but melancholy. Great album.

I enjoyed this album, I only knew a couple songs prior. I liked the concept, the ambiance, the psychedelia. I liked it but didn't love it. Not sure if it just wasn't fitting with my mood this day or what. Objectively I know it's great, but it was kinda dragging towards the end.

Love the weird vibes of this album. Some great instrumentals, production and vocals showcased here. Excited to listen to this one again to gain more appreciation forit it, but on initial listen - it gets high praise from me. Almost all the songs on this album that I liked! That's rare. Good stuff!

Fun album, listened to it a lot as a kid.

Great record, the lyrics of each song are outstanding, it flows very well and it's not too long. There are calm songs and the rest feel like you can listen to them every day. I didn't listened to the entire album before today. Very good.

Voll gut

I really dig this album. Good from beginning to end.

Sounds proper nice.

Até agora gostei bastante da adição de elementos "robóticos" na melodia

4.0 I always had a slight aversion to this album (despite loving the title track) as this annoying bellend at my school wouldn't stop banging on about it, he made it his personality for about 3 months and it gave me the ick. Cheers Paul. Listening back two and a half decades later I can appreciate it a lot more. I think it's cult status is slightly overblown, it's a very good album but it's not amazing, relies slightly too heavily on instrumentals and stays a bit too close to its course, sounding a bit samey in places. Still, the title track is phenomenal, and there are a few other lovely moments on here. Happy to have it in my life now, but glad I didn't fall into a flaming lips rabbithole in my youth.

Completely caught me off guard by how I liked this one. I thought it was going to be too weird but it maintained the balance very well. Some songs weren't great though. 7-7.5/10

Very melodical with nice instrumentation and good lyrics. Quite chilled and relaxing. Really enjoyed it and would listen again. Favourite track-Are you a hypnotist?

Such a fun, nostalgic album to listen to. I really enjoyed re-visiting this one. At times deep yet playful throughout.

Wow, 'in the Morning of the Magicians' es grandioses Lied! und au sust sehr e gutes Album wo jetzt scho Anwärter uf de Best-Album-Name-Award 2026 isch! vier sashimis mit soja sauce

iiiii like these. biz sad gsi, gester sit langem wiedermal mini kopfhörer vergesse und denn das album mit mine Back ÖP kopfhörer müsse lose (dene wos gratis im flugi gid). und die sind shaddy as fuck, aso so es schöns album mit dene z lose scho biz schadeee

I haven’t heard this album in years, so it’s cool to listen to it with “new” ears. I find it a little over-produced, a little charming. On the whole, I still quite like it, with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 and In the Morning of the Magicians my favorites. I have a soft spot for Do You Realize?? but it’s a bit overplayed.

This album is a masterclass in early 2000's indie rock. It handles some light concept, a variety of textures and sounds without ever feeling like it strayed from The Flaming Lips' signature quirk-pop bent, all while being chock full of touching and meditative songwriting about love, mortality, and survival in an increasingly confusing world- all of which feels more and more apt as each day passes. Marking a turn to a more sci-fi subject matter and an associated change to more electronic instrumentation and influence by things as astray for the group as hip hop (for example, the beat on "One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21"), it manages to still feel true to the band. This album still stands the test of time as an exemplary listen for its genre. Some of the ultimate quirked up white boy alt. Favorite Tracks: "Yoshimi..." Pts. 1 & 2, "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell", "It's Summertime", "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" (Grammy btw) Least Favorite Track: N/A (No skips) Frontmen Who Look Like Alcoholic Wizards: Yes

I want to keep consistency between my other account so I’ll keep it at a 4.. but it’s really a 4.5, love how whimsical this record is

Uh that’s something different, I like the variety of music Voll Melancholisch, makes you overthink life One on star review said it’s for vaping vegans and that’s me so (even though I don’t vape)

I thought this was delightful but I need to listen again when I am not so tired.

Pretty good and unique

Really strong concept album with an ethereal, crystalline sound. Not a hand holder but has a through line. As well as some anthemic bangers

Very quirky and atmospheric, this is going into my rotation fs

Not my vibe but I thought this album was good and well done. A good listen

Very interesting sound effects lol but I liked it

love da flaming lips

Listened Before: No Wow! Never heard of this band before but I thought it was the perfect mix of experimentation and pop sensibility. A lot of songs on here I really liked. Songs like Fight Test make me want to make more music. 4/5

4/5 This is a challenging album to give a rating. I’ve see. This album high on many best indie album lists, and every time I revisit it gives me a different listening experience. Some moments I’m thinking this a great album easy 5 stars and other moments it’s too weird. Overall it’s an album that keeps me intrigued and in some way everything does come together. All the small strange sounds plus the vocals make it a interesting album. I do understand that not everybody likes it though. Favourite songs: - Fight test - Yoshimi battles the pink robots, pt. 1 - It’s summertime

Another one that I owned, had listened to, and had opinions on - which were that this is a really solid album but not one that grabbed me. But going back and listening to it again, a lot of the songs are better than I remembered. Still not an album I'd go back to regularly, but a solid and interesting listen

4/5 fav song: are you a magician? after the first 3 songs i thought i was going to be disappointed by this album as intros were really good, the singing just ruined it for me. however, the rest of the album improved and i really enjoyed! very spiritualised/ beach house vibes.

“In the Morning of the Magicians” <3

this was so good. 9/10

prolly the BEST thing this app could of reccomeneded me. jst pure good vibes and awsomeness.

Good vibes, ethereal

I liked the album very nuch, it was the kind of "indir that hits different", as if I was listening to a Tame Impala or a Gorillaz project. I could listen to it again, that's why I saved it in my Spotify library. I liked one song in particular, which I saved in my Liked Songs. The album is more popular than I thought it would be :)

A couple of excellent tunes, album good to listen to as a whole.

Title track is odd - it's experimental but doesn't really hit for me - although it does fit really nicely with the concept of the album it's just not the most enjoyable listen I appreciate that the album has running themes and a fun concept but it's not something I think I'd seek out. In the morning of the magicians is a pretty good song and has a cool pink Floyd esq feel but less immersive.

That was scary for me. It's very well-made but scary.

Really fun album, first track is a banger. And of course the viral track towards the end. Loved it!

11 songs•47 minutes Concept album. Robot gaining sentients and learns to love while fighting other evil robots. The banger in this album is Do You Realize. 4/5

Gostei imenso. Uma mistura de Beatles e psicadélico! 4 estrelas!

It’s not too often I get an album on this list that blows me away and makes me regret not being in on the hype when it first came out. I knew who the Flaming Lips were, they were a seemingly chaotic, psychedelic indie rock band from Oklahoma, the big indie band that people loved. I remember the hype when Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots came out. But I was a metalhead and I “hated” indie rock. Plus, 2002 seemed like a year you still had to buy music, and I just couldn’t take the word of a music critic and spend money on a weird-sounding album. Right? Also, I probably wouldn’t have been ready for Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is an electronic album with acoustic guitars and hip-hop beats, telling the story of Yoshimi battling pink robots. This album is amazing. The songs are incredible, the sounds are incredible, so I’m all the way in on this album. The album is filled with melancholy songs about love and other earthly emotions, but then you have Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 2, which sounds like a battle against robots, but in a funky way. There is some debate about whether the album is a concept album, but that’s immaterial to the ears. The music, songs like Do You Realize, kind of reminds me of the Gorillaz, a melding of hip-hop, electronic, and singer-songwriter music. By the by, I also love the Gorillaz. Every album they put out is one you can listen to for months without any burnout. Speaking of Do You Realize?, In 2009, it was named the state song of Oklahoma. Who knew Oklahoma could be progressive in anything? However, as soon as the GOP got in charge, they removed the designation. The state song is now, Oklahoma!. Still has an exclamation point, but obviously much lamer. Truth be told, I like Oklahoma! too. The album broke the Flaming Lips into the mainstream, except they weren’t a mainstream band. Kind of like how the Butthole Surfers became a mainstream band with their song Pepper, but the Butthole Surfers were barely an underground band. But, of course, the Flaming Lips returned to their indie king status and did other weird/cool things, like recording a studio version of Dark Side of the Moon with Henry Rollins and Peaches. I think everyone can find something to like about this album. I recommend giving it a try sometime. It just sounds very different from what we’re hearing today, which is kind of sad.

Super neat album. Definitely deserves multiple listens.

Really enjoyed revisiting this one; after a few decades away I forgot how good, cohesive and weird the album got beyond the big hits. Still holds up.

I'm normally not one for the indie stuff, but I enjoyed this. Kind of like if Linkin Park was softer. Cool arrangements. 4/5

Una banda conocida, con buenas canciones, pero no es para mi

Bonkers, but brilliant!

I think this was my first time really listening to space rock-ish music. I enjoyed the experimental Neo-Psychedelia. For a genre I don't listen to, I liked it.

Listend to quite a bit of Flaming Lips in my 20s, but recognize its not for everyone

Despite being a fellow Oklahoman, I wasn't familiar with The Flaming Lips. Just knew the name and knew "Do You Realize??" but didn't know it was them. My bad - I really like this album and probably would've loved it even more back in the 2000s when it first came out. Favorite tracks are "Fight Test," "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1," "Are You a Hypnotist??," and "Do You Realize??" Great space rock sound. For a brief time "Do You Realize??" was the Official Rock Song of Oklahoma, but it was done via excecutive order so it was a fragile designation. When Mary "more of a country music gal" Fallin took office she let us lapse back into a state of rocklessness. It could be worse. We need to let this problem go under the radar for now, otherwise one of our legislators will put forward a Kid Rock song.

Really solid indie/alternative album. Cool, almost psychadelic keyboard in some tracks and nice vocals and sound

162/1089 first track was a really good and surprising introduction. Sympathy 3000-21 was beautiful too this was a good listen and i will definitely return to it and can see it growing even more on me faves: It’s Summertime, All We Have Is Now, Approaching…, In the Morning of the Magicians, Fight Test, Yoshimi Part 1 73/100

Not a perfect album, but I’ve loved it ever since it first came out.

okay a birth year album -first glance i know do you realize and i like that song -first song isnt bad actually lowkey weirdly gives the beatles, okay i actually like it -one more robot eh… wait it’s growing on me the more i listen -yoshimi battles part 1 is cute sound reminds me of vampire weekend a little -only issue is the weird mechanical sounds are weird to me -part 2 absolutely no thanks -in the morning of magicians is making me so byler emo im crying this is genuinely making me depressed -ego tripping another emo byler song making me depressed okay wow -are you a hypnotist i like it but am i seeing byler everywhere i go cause like this one too im in psychosis -its summertime i like it a very sad bop its also reminding me of djo -do you realize i know it and like it already a stranger things edit after the finale with this song would make me kms probably -all we have is now i like it, okay it’s lowkey giving season 5 vecna vibes

So groovy so spacey

Is The Soft Bulletin on this list? Because that one's a five.

really liked it 8/10

Calm and somehow relaxing. Love the title track. Maybe the entire album it's a Little too long, but I'll listen again this album for Shure!

Listened to this also in high school and looking back… did someone or did the algorithm know about this project because how in the hell was this suggesting to me cause I just be listening to billie eilish at first… also white boys should just be doing whimsy stuff like this like why are they only listening to drake rn

banger!

A bit hippie

funky jazz rock.

the storyline is so good

First time hearing them, quite liked it.

Solo soy una chica que tenía 25 años cuando esto salió. Así que mi conclusión es fácil: Es un discazo.

Eclectic, yes. Fun, also yes. But more importantly, how do you not tear up when listening to Do You Realize? It's so bittersweet. Just awesome stuff. Yoshimi part 2 can go to hell for the screaming, though.

Tänk liksom du sätter på detta när du åker flygplan mitt i natten 🫰

Already heard it before but great album

The last good one

I have no idea about this, I actually loved this record it was so weird and experimental but also gentle and beautiful I genuinely felt like a trip also the instrumental records were phenomenal.

Beautifully flowing and complete piece of art. This album motivates me to try to shed my Playlist Listening and go out of my way to listen to full albums.

I was obsessed with this one 20 years ago. Still incredible As close to a perfect 5 as I’ve gotten so far

On first listen they instantly reminded me of Radiohead. Very dreamy and mysterious, while still being quite melodic and weirdly experimental with their electronic loops, layered synths, distorted drums, and heavily processed vocals, mixed with organic elements. It’s the right amount of experimental. A bit hazy, a bit sweet, a bit bitter. It feels very dreamlike and uses both analog and digital instrumentation to create a lush, colorful soundscape. Individually each track is very strong, but collectively they add up to a single piece that feels greater than the individual parts. This is the ideal album to listen to from front to back. I feel the whole point of albums like this is to take you on a journey, shifting your mood and tempo to create that progressive, flowing experience. I especially liked the keyboards in the songs, but each instrument has its moment in the spotlight without overpowering the others. This is an album I could put on in the background while working or even sleeping as it’s very relaxing and mellow, with a good balance of upbeat and melancholic moments. It makes me feel like I’m floating through space. The album cover is a very cute concept. Artistically it leans toward the warmer side, visualizing the title of the album. It’s surreal, cartoonish, slightly unsettling, while still leaving a sense of curiosity and intrigue, exactly like the record itself. My favourite tracks are One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1, In the Morning of the Magicians, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell, Are You a Hypnotist??, It’s Summertime, Do You Realize??, and All We Have Is Now.

I’ve never really dabbled in The Flaming Lips before so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this!! This album flows really well, and I will def be listening again.

This album is really close to a 5 for me. The concept, the songwriting and the weirdness are all top notch. Flaming Lips at their absolute best.

Really good album, love the vibe

Coincidentally just saw The Flaming Lips perform this whole album last summer. It was quite a good show with enormous inflatable pink robots on the stage. Honestly don’t remember why we ended up there. I’m not specifically a fan. I do like this record. This is the first time (other than the show) listening all the way through.

I really enjoyed listening to this album. I didn't quite get to love it, but really liked.

I've heard this before but it's a super cool indie rock album. Does a lot of interesting stuff and there's defo some kind of story I'm not picking up on fully. Overall 8/10

Neo-psychedelia, moments interessants

12/10/2025

A nice dive into neo psychedelic/indie. Brings me back to being a teenager. Definitely above average but also far from perfect.

beautiful nostalgic record, brings lots of emotions

i already really liked this album. accidentally listened on shuffle and it was still good

Interesting and enjoyable. I wish the whole album continued the concept of Yoshimi and the Robots, and by the end the tracks are slightly samey, some more variety with higher tempos etc might work well. But I liked this quite a lot.

It was pretty chill loved the story vibe about robotos

This could maybe be a five. Worth a relisten!

Great album

Really cool album with a great back story. Some songs were weird but that’s kinda what the flaming lips are about. Would be a 5 star if they kept to the tune of songs like Fight Song and Yoshimi part 1. Fav Song: Fight Song

7/10 Favorites: Fight Test Do You Realize??

To be honest, I didn't know this band, and it was wonderful that my introduction to their music was through this album, which is a reference point for the best of alternative music; it's worth buying in physical format.

I liked it! I wasn’t paying full attention to which songs I liked but I liked the overall tone. I really liked the opening track and its Cat Stevens sample specifically.

Бих слушал някои песни пак

This is such a good album and great band! Went and saw this summer and it was such a good show! Yoshimi!!

At this point I feel like my listening habits are merely being validated. I'm loving all the records each day as they are my "history". Delightful

Good variety. Creative

Weirdcore altrock space shit? Sign me up. Weirdcore altrock space shit in 2002??? Wow. That’s some transformative stuff right there. In all honesty, I’ve lived on the fringe of The Flaming Lips’ music many years. Their particular brand of music (which they clearly helped in championing) was the exact kind of music that defined my late teens into my early twenties. This is the first time I’ve sat down and listened to this entire album. It’s a banger. It really feels like you’re taken on a cohesive journey. I don’t have much to add - go listen to it.

Generating an album entitled "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" does not inspire much confidence. It sounds much more like some dirt cheap under-developed animé that my university roommate swears he only watches "for the plot". But it's actually good? I've heard of the Flaming Lips, but I haven't really listened to them on account of their band name is bad and this album title is also bad. It's a good album. Weird concept but they make it work. Lyrics make sense aligning with the story but are also sneaky universal. The melodies are really good, the instrumentation and dreamy keyboards are done effectively, the warm production is unique but accessible. However, it's still a bit down-tempo throughout, and doesn't really kick into another gear. The synths all sound the same, and while it makes for cohesive listens through the songs, it slows down the album and makes the last couple songs seem like they last a lot longer than they do.

This album is, in a word, exciting. There are a few perfect songs on here, but even the lesser tracks still bubble with energy from cinematic synths and Steven Drozd's chuggling drums. By the end, you feel ready to battle some pink robots. It makes me feel good, but I didn't exactly love every song. This is about as close as you can get to 5 without making it.

It’s been nice to listen to albums I’m familiar with in a different lens. Outside of this project, this album wasn't a stand out for me. However after listening and contemplating my last 100 albums or so, I was able to listen to this one with a different state of mind. Meditations aside and simply put, I understand the critical acclaim that this album has achieved.

A weirdly unique concept album that I really liked. A crazy album name like that gets me imagining a story throughout the record, which I think was the goal

A fun and smooth concept album, worth a listen once every year or two.

Yoshimi is a great add to the 1001 Must Hear List! All songs are good, and woven together into a well executed concept album. A fun, thought provoking listen. In the Morning of the Magicians has a very NY feel. I’m interested in seeing the musical if the opportunity ever arises. (4.2*s) Do you realize all we’ve ever had is NOW?

Love Love Love - didn't even have to listen. Just solid and experimental and just different enough. Will be influencing others for decades from subject matter and roots through the music.

Loved it.

Solid turn of the century indie

A relaxing soundtrack where I knew more songs than I thought I did.

Solid!

I first heard of The Flaming Lips when I received the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Soundtrack CD at the age of 9 or 10. Cool album, I like the layering. Track picks include Are You A Hypnotist?? for the drums, Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell, and Do You Realize??

Flaming Lips always do a great job at making indie rock feel experimental! Loved the way the story telling could be conveyed through the instrumentation alone. 7/10

Do you realize?? Was the main track I was familiar with from The Flaming Lips. I don’t think I could identify their music otherwise. General easy listening imo. Some fun experimental sounds leaning into the weird side. Yoshimi battles the pink robots pt 2 was a fun audio depiction of a cartoon battle. I went back for a second play through today and would recommend it.

This was a weird and cool album. I really enjoyed it

I'm a fan, even though it's a little cute.

ChatGPT said: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots unfolds for you like a storybook about the clash between innocence and technology, bravery and decay, humanity and circuitry. The opening track, One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, sets that tone — you hear it as thoughtful but restrained, an idea-driven overture more intriguing than moving. It’s an introduction you appreciate conceptually, not viscerally. Then comes the title pair, and that’s where the album bursts alive. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 is clearly your emotional anchor — a perfect five-star fusion of melody, optimism, and story. Its companion, Pt. 2, gets almost the same reverence, with its driving rhythm and sense of cosmic urgency, though you seem to experience it more as a mood piece than a full song. These two tracks together represent the album’s beating heart — one side human, the other mechanical, both luminous. With In the Morning of the Magicians, the tone turns inward. You seem to appreciate its meditative sprawl — it earns respect for atmosphere and ambition — but your rating suggests it’s more of a contemplative pause than a favorite. Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell continues in that reflective mode, but its abstract imagery keeps it at a distance; you sense meaning in it but not connection. Are You a Hypnotist?? lands similarly, a song that fascinates intellectually but doesn’t hit with the same melodic force as the Yoshimi pair. The back half of the record is where your affection deepens again. It’s Summertime and Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon both fall toward the lower end of your ratings — they feel like transitions rather than destinations, sonic sketches that fill in color rather than move the plot. But then comes Do You Realize??, the moment everything crystallizes. You give it a perfect score, and rightly so — it’s the song where mortality, love, and wonder fuse into something simple and transcendent. All We Have Is Now receives the same devotion: brief, haunting, and deeply human. The album closes as it began — suspended between science fiction and soul. For you, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is less about androids and more about empathy under duress. Your ratings tell the story of a listener who treasures the songs that pulse with emotional clarity and melody, and who treats the ambient experiments as bridges to get there. It’s an album you respect as art, but love most when it forgets it’s art and just reaches out a human hand.

fun indie electronic rock album, really enjoyed it.

Some very high highs but not consistent enough for 5 stars

Unusual...interesting lyrics

I feel glad I listened to it. I don't particularly care for the lead singer's voice, just a personal aesthetic preference. But I did appreciate the lyrics and music.

I love Do You Realize. I always want to love the others more than I actually do. It's just more smoothly ironed out than I like.

Ended up listening multiple times throughout the day. Felt a lot of similarities with Pink Floyd and Radiohead style.

Titelspåret är fantastiskt, resten också behagligt men inget som fastnade direkt.

nossa que álbum divertido. o final podia ter sido melhor. dou uns 84 até agora. it’s summertime mt boa

A weird and wonderful concept album meets epic poem that has me wondering if androids dream of electric sheep and just how much influence drugs have on the creative process.

4.5 1001 Challenge album one: Loved this, the production is so lush and there is just such a persistent feeling of whimsy across the whole record. Outstanding +: Do You Realize??

I had heard of these guys but I have never listened to them until now. It was a pleasant surprise. Excellent production, all the songs are original and none of them sound alike. A perfect combination of electronica, alternative and just good old rock and roll.

Solid, prefer this to the soft bulletin

Really interesting production and otherworldly sounds, would not be surprised if this was one of Kevin Parker's influences.

I shall reward Yoshimi's great bravery in fighting the evil pink robots by giving her a 4 star rating.

Love this album

Couple of good jams, and the rest is good background filler.

Some songs where kinda strange, some songs felt like home, some make me calm, and in most of them i find myself travelling in my own mind, and this is something that I really apreciate when it happens while listening to music, enjoy it

This album was pretty good, I liked a lot of the sounds I heard. Not much more to say, but will be getting an 8.5/10.

forgot how great this album is top to bottom

Very different

I love the elements of hip hop, electronic, and psychedelia. There are a couple of songs that drag a bit. 8/10

My established opinion on this album was that I wanted to like it more than I did. My logical brain is going, "You like this. This is good," and my emotional brain is going, "Do I?" Listening to it now, that still holds somewhat true, but it definitely hits me in the feels a lot more than it once did. It's an admirable and delightful piece of work, but I'm stingy with my 5's so . . .

4/5 - At one time, this would have been a slam dunk 5, but I've gotten older, and I'm seeing the cracks. Fight Test (electronic Father and Son) and Yoshimi Pt 1 are still favorites, and I do think the whole album is worth hearing, but I think I wore through the novelty years ago. It is maybe the most concept album that is not a concept album, whatever that means. I like to think that our present day pink robots are AI data centers and their need to be omnipresent in our lives. If only a black belt in karate were enough to fend it off.

Another great headphone album and a very fun record by the Lips. Some of their best songs here including "Fight Test," "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," and "Do You Realize??" The second half fades a bit in quality and the whole "concept" kind of falls apart. The production is fabulous and this and the previous album, "The Soft Bulletin," was their creative apex.

This is a great album, probably my favorite by the Flaming Lips. A bit too much filler for me to give it 5 stars, but has some of their very best tracks with fight test, Yoshimi, are you a hypnotist, do you realise??. Funny having this one after Kid A, both terrific albums released around the same time but while Yorke and co are freaking out, Wayne Coyne is entering the 21st century, probably blissed out on shrooms, happy to be alive, just making creative and catchy shit. You need both kinds of bands, this is such a warm and vibrant record. Getting to see the Lips live was incredible, anyone should go if they get the chance

Interesante, me gusta más la segunda mitad del disco, muy chula la percusión

I gave this one a listen a few months back because it was the mood at work, I tend to think about it and put it on every few years ever since I found it in my late adolescence. It may not officially be a "concept album", but one thing The Flaming Lips always seem to nail is the conceptual side of their release. It's like their modus operandi is to tie everything together so it feels cohesive, and in that sense, even though I'm ignorant to a large chunk of their discography, I think it's safe to say this is some of their best work. We're stating this because it was meant for a broader audience than a lot of their significantly more artsy projects, but without sacrificing the effort that goes into the details. Quality musicianship on a beautiful project. 3.8/5

8/10 - very strong album, I remember listening to this when it came out and trying to get my school friends to listen but no one was interested. But it's a welcome change from the rock/indie/alternative scene from when it came out. Has to be appreciated on a good sound system. Fave highlight is "Ego Tripping at the gates of hell"

I won't claim that this is a perfect record, but it's one that I can reliably listen without skipping. Since I'm old, I first heard this while watching 3 South on MTV and it's always held a place in my heart. fast forward 6 years or so and I re-discovered the album while branching into indie rock. So many influences that blend very nicely together. A+ in my book. If i could give half stars, I would. 4.5/5

Really fun album

Yeah, this rips.

Really great throughout

Kinda vibe with this, nice

Surprisingly entertaining

The little “hey hey” after the Black Belt in Karate line is one of my favorite things in all of music. This album reminds me of falling in love with my wife.

And there it is, folks. The Flaming Lips. Very easy listening. This is good music IMO. Feels like the early 2000s, or at least, I think it does. The early 2000s are a blur for ol' Fareid. This album is nostalgia for a retro-futuristic utopia that never existed. I especially felt like the first few songs were distinctly enjoyable, "Flight Test" and "One More Robot" were a sound for sore ears. The title track's first part kept the joy promised by the title going, but I believe the second part is where someone started screaming. No go. It slows down into palatable grooving and then we hit "Do You Realize." I learned about this song in Writers' Group a couple of weeks ago lol, but I do think it's pretty damn good, especially in the context of this whole album. I can't listen to it 100 times but I can really listen to it once and feel less alone in my apartment at 1 AM. I think this is a really good album. I think it's of a higher consistent quality than those albums of the last few days, and for that reason, I'm giving Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots four stars. See? I like music!

Some inspired song titles on here

First time listener and I really liked the mildly dreamy yet lively songs. Well done.

When this generator here introduced me to The Flaming Lips via "The Soft Bulletin" (#62), it elicited one of my strongest reactions of "How had I slept on this band all the time, wtf!?" so far. But in hindsight, that excitement didn't last long, to be honest. And now, today, one and a half years later I think "Yoshimi..." merely has my sympathies. A lot of them, mind you, there's still some of that fragile, whimsical beauty, but it doesn't captivate me the way "The Soft Bulletin" did then, that day.

People calling this album boring in the reviews, and I just don't get it. This was a great album and easy to get through. First song, Fight Test, stood out right away.

Interesting record. Flaming Lips only sound like Flaming Lips… and nobody else sounds like Flaming Lips. Not my thing, but I recognize just how talented they are.

Another one I hadn't check out before, heard of the band, and I'm glad I did. Very nice listen. I think I really like the beginning more and then it seemed to blend together a bit in a droney way but it might be one I have to go back and listen to more, which I definitely will.

Didn’t know much about Flaming Lips assumed some kind of rock band. Wasn’t expecting much, but really enjoyed - wasn’t expecting a futuristic journey through robot wars in an electronic/acoustic musical - odd but interesting and well worth a listen

Strangely listenable, I kind of hear flaws throughout but I keep wanting to listen again so its doing something right! I can hear the artists that it influenced too.

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with The Flaming Lips. For every good thing they do, it feels like they release another five massively cringe projects. Yoshimi is up there with the best of their work though, and it was lovely to return to this album after so many years. It does get a little samey throughout the middle of the album, but the start and end are so strong, the album as a whole doesn't suffer for it. I once had tickets to see The Flaming Lips play in a tiny local venue and was too ill to go. They still managed to squeeze in their full range of wacky inflatable bollocks into the room and it's one of my biggest gig regrets of all time.

I've never really been able to get into the Flaming Lips, but this is good. Nothing here is really that great, but I think there are enough interesting moments throughout that it kept me engaged. Low 4.

A classic…not a new one….memories of Electric Picnic

Excellent trippy indy vibes

easy listening, melodic, psychadeliic, lovely 4

I dont really love this band bit feel its pretty good. Objectively speaking they are good composers and musicians so not much to say but music is too indie slow for my taste. Feel this is a great album

rich sound structure complex but smooth effects, lots of variety good voice overall great ambient and sound design

Enjoyable, funky to listen to, chill

Lips fan here. Nice to have this recognized. Entertaining robot-rock (is that a term?). As we prepare for the singularity, we might listen to One More Robot for a potential theme song. 2002, way ahead of its time. If it comes to a fight, I hope we have Yoshimi on our side. Love and death, peace and war, agitation and calm. Great album. .

Flaming Fabulous! Not quite a 5-star but some terrific songs. Quirky and a bit mad and they remind me of a previous job where we played great albums all day and this was one.

I’ve always felt that I was supposed to like this more than I actually do. So my 3.5 becomes a 4.

Love this album. Somehow, not at a 5-star, maybe it's just a little too indulgent... esoteric... I don't know. I admire these traits in this band, but I generally turn to a couple of others in their catalog over this. Personal preference, I guess, but love to the band for doing whatver the fuck they want to.

Another great FL record, though I was getting a bit antsy after Do you realize. But some great songs, cool vibes, and killer sounds.

Very good find from the list. Didn't know anything about the album or the artist. Album has a very good soundscape and sounds "new" . Favorite track: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Other picks: Fight Test, It's Summertime, Do You Realize?

I've always known The Flaming Lips by name but I don't think I could have told you anything about them or their music. This is the first time I'm consciously listening to them and it's not what I expected with a name like The Flaming Lips. It's much more funky. lo-fi, happy sounding than I thought it would be. But I'm enjoying it! Feels like a blend of folk music and synth music. With a little alt rock thrown in the mix for good measure. I love the orchestral pieces of the album too and the little add-on robot parts. It's a cool concept. The second half of the album starts to blur together and isn't nearly as interesting as the first half however. Overall I enjoyed it more than I expected!

Banger, throw back to my outward bound days.

Good background music.

Sick album. Psychadelic electronic pop concept album? Hell yeah. I hadn’t really listened to the Flaming Lips before this but will check them out more for sure. Very solid throughout with at least a few bangers just on the first couple listens.

A few atmospheric synthie rhythm tracks, but also lots of gaps in the album.

3.5 rounded up. It was fun!

really fun and a bit weird in a good way but overall made me very productive and is a bit of a vibe

I thought this album was a concept album from the first half. Despite this I find myself enjoying it, wished the second half kept expanding on it.

This album is like riding a wave or floating on a cloud. You just sort of get lost in it. Enjoy being lost!

The Flaming Lips will forever be seared into my mind as the band that did a song-for-song cover of Sgt. Pepper. Like… the whole freaking album. And for someone who almost universally hates covers and considers Sgt Pepper to be one of the top 10 albums of all time, this act was a damn near irredeemable offense. That said, I pride myself on keeping an open mind, so I need to stand by that. I’d listened to this album (Yoshimi) before, and it’s about as I remembered. It skews too often into “self indulgent circle jerk” territory, but there are some good tracks. I don’t think this album (or this band) is nearly as clever as it thinks it is, but overall it could’ve been much worse. Take your 4 and be gone. 4/5 Highlights: Flight Test Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2 Do You Realize??

4 Stars (11/15)

This album is.....interesting to say the least. The Flaming Lips have always been a band I've wanted to check out but never got around to, so when 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' came up as my next album to review, I thought "ahh well, guess its time to scratch that itch." And.....well, this album's a trip. Acid-tinged production, glitchy electronics and utterly bizarre lyrical content, 'Yoshimi...' sounds very much like it owes plenty to Radiohead, particularly their 'OK Computer' and 'Kid A' efforts, and also the Madchester scene of the late 80s-early 90s (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays etc.). Equal parts psychedelic and electronic, 'Yoshimi...' blends both together in quite a bonkers way, but its by no means unlistenable. This strange brew of dreaminess and weirdness is evident in such tracks like 'Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell', 'Yoshimi... Pts. 1 and 2', 'Fight Test' and 'Do You Realize' (the only song of theirs I'd heard previously), with psychedelic guitars and inventive electronics blending together seamlessly. With Wayne Coyne, Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins all having a comprehensive share in the music, taking on multiple instruments and production each, there's no shortage of creativity present. With that said, Coyne's voice bears plenty of resemblance to Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour without really possessing the majesty and spectacle of either, and there's just something about whispery male vocals (generally in the indie genre) that don't do it for me. I generally prefer vocals with more drama and intensity, and indie vocalists have always sounded too boring for me. So while I don't dig the vocals, I do dig the vision and scope of the music on 'Yoshimi...'. It sounds amazing and the songs have plenty of distinct character. 3.5/5

This album was awesomely creative and weird. It was strangely introspective as well

Awesome album.

Okay WOWW

Delightful. A really lovely, fun, easy listen. Just weirdo and experimental enough without going up its whole butt.

Weird journey I went on with this record recently. I loved it when I first listened to it back in like 2012. Relistened to it last month, and wasn't as enamored with it. But I listened again today, and its back to being fantastic. Highlights have always been Fight Test, Yoshimi Pt. 1, and In the Morning of the Magicians. Love the acoustic guitar and the unique synths they got going on in this record. Will say, though, only thing keeping it from a 5 is Yoshimi Pt. 2. They went too much with the synths in that track, and it just doesn't mesh with the rest of the tracklist. Had that song not been included, I'd seriously be considering giving this a 5*.

Wonderful, unique album. 8/10

Oho, yllättävänkin kova. Vähän tulee Gorillaz mieleen tuosta elektronisen rokin tyylistä. Parhaat: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, In the Morning of the Magicians, It's Summertime

Already got this one. Seen them a few times too. Prefer the soft bulletin though.

Has great opening song and in general strong out of the gate. Up and down after that but pretty fun, dreamy record that holds up.

Like the distorted drums. Good melodies. Not into the dreamy lyrics. Good overall composition and song writing. Songs have good movement and dynamism.

- Overall positive message. Pop, but with and edge. Reflective - Layered nature of the music. Over punched drums. - Traditional rock instrumentation in the back, but layered digital, instumentation. Orchestral. Guitar. Bits of live crowd edited in. Almost feels random but works. - Lyrics, really unique. How did they come up with the concept? LSD? - 'Blown out' drums really central to album. Overall enjoyable. Really toes the line between chaos and pop rock. The subject matter and obscurity of some of the music puts it into enough of art category to not feel contrived, but still positive and within popular music.

I loved this album when my godfather got it for me in high school. It feels like a modern David Bowie sci-fi rock opera

Great album really enjoyed this not heard the flaming lips for ages. Highly recommend

Not bad, one familiar song I would have never listened to this

Surprised I enjoyed this. Loved the drums throughout the album. Would listen to again.

Interesting

I’m vibing more with Yoshimi Part 2 more than Part 1, not sure why. Maybe it was having more screaming women I really liked Do You Realize??. Great songwriting, fantastic instrumentals. Apparently, The Flaming Lips was a huge influence on one of my favourite musicians, Kevin Parker. I guess that tracks, the instrumentals are unique and well-produced throughout this album. Several songs are just too goofy to enjoy the whole album properly. Highlights: Do You Realize??, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 2, Are you a Hypnotist, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell, Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)

The most 8/10 album to have ever been made. Pops up on every music board, every all time list. A great album no doubt but absolutely positively nothing more. I forgot about this album and thrn cone bacm every few years and every few years i have my new favourite tracks or what have you but the score never changes. 8/10

Pleasant. Took me a few cracks of listening to this to be in the right mood for it but it is a well-crafted album. Each time a song didn't quite land with me, the following song would knock me off my feet. Got better on each listen. Far from perfect but very enjoyable and not at all what I expected! Was originally a solid 3 but as the album grew on me I settled on a 4. Highlights: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, Do You Realise??, Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)

Verga, qué interesante album. Me gustó mucho.

Such a great album, reminds me of Earthbound by the art and sound

Held my interest the whole way through

ya lo habia oido pero mola

Really interesting is the mash up of electronic music with classical, nostalgic, old kind of music. But i really liked it!!! For me, the interpretation for those electronic fragments, is representing those robots/monsters, they are singing about and it's really cool. Vocals are great and classic guitar also warms the cockles of my heart.

Dad- 7 Mom- 7.5 Mike- NA Lori- 10 Michael- 8.5 Miles- 9 Cole- 9.5 Avg- 8.58

Very relaxing. Hit my inner sad boi just right

end of one more robot is beautiful me likey the drums from ybtpr pt.2 and the squelchy synth less a fan of morning of the magicians could relax with ego tripping at the gates of hell do you realise a bit corny but gets good

Strange little emotional space opera for people (like me) who want to cry and look at lasers

Very good!

Hard to top The Soft Bulletin, but an excellent follow-up. Do You Realize worth the ticket price alone. Memories of Witnness 2003 where they filled in for White Stripes, and were mad craic.

93/1001. I used to love this album, and there are still a few bangers. However, for some reason listening to this lately doesn't really seem interesting or important. The whole seems quite monotonous and slow, of course the few highlights (Yoshimi pt 1 and 2, Do you realize??) brighten it up. Somehow it is not surreal and dreamy enough, it's a bit too rock?

Listened to this 5 times in a day, belter album. Órla asked me to skip to the next song during "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2" as the synths were making her anxious. I remember having this on my iPod 20 years ago as I was trying to smooch a girl called Eimear at the time, and this was her favourite album. Never did get to smooch Eimear, but young love is fleeting, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is forever.

This was a new listen for me, what an amazing conceptual album, great listen.

Really good, lots of interesting sounds. Will definitely be listening to again. A little on the slow side at times, and I’m not sure if other Flaming Lips records sound similar to this one.

psychedelic, trippy, awesome

I’ve never really managed to get into The Flaming Lips, despite trying a few times over the years. Today, I decided to give Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots a proper listen—and I’m glad I did. Their 10th studio album leans more into an electronic sound, which is much closer to my taste. I ended up listening to it several times today and found myself really enjoying it. Standout moments include “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2,” as well as “Fight Test.” “Do You Realize??” is also an absolute belter. While the album can blur into itself after a while, it’s a pleasantly immersive kind of “samey.” Who would have thought I’d enjoy a concept album about robots—blending psychedelic rock and electronica—with such introspective and emotional lyrics? Favourite track: “Do You Realize??” Least favourite track: None—every track is worth a listen. Album artwork: Really cool and eye-catching.

This was really good, but would’ve been really REALLY good while high.

Another low 4 I think, I appreciate the song cycle esque stuff going on

I loved this album listen! I feel like the only song I knew before was ‘Do You Realize??’ Which is a bittersweet song about life and death. Overall, I had a great time listening to this album and its electronic, psychedelic, indie rock vibes. This was just a fun album to listen to collectively and I will definitely be re-listening to this album soon!

Cool, background music. Slightly eclectic but enjoyable. Good for a Thursday night. It grew on me after a few listens

A nostalgic listen, I used to love the yoshimi battles the pink robots single. Only a couple of recognised bangers in there but a consistent and enjoyable listen. 8/10

I’d heard it before but this relisten was for some reason a breakthrough. It’s very chill but very layered and oh so cerebral. Liked it and rated it higher than I thought I would. Very good.

Better than anticipated. 4/5
