Reviews (page 6 of 14)
I liked the majority of tracks and thought it was very solid - Yoshimi 1/2 are the highlights for sure. I assume there's more of a story throughout but I didn't pick up fully on that. Sonically it's just what I want so it's a 4 regardless
Weird and awesome and beautiful in equal measure. 'Do You Realize?' will bring you to tears every time.
This albums lingers for me. I might need to give it another listen. There’s something alluring here, and I’m not sure I plumbed the depths.
Weird. Vibey. Art. Dug it. Bought the vinyl
3.5 stars A weird and pretty record that has some duller moments but isn’t overly long. It’s got classic tracks and is worth multiple listens.
Still obsessed with the bass lines on this one after all these years. Some truly beautiful songs and exciting production work throughout.
Not quite my favorite flaming lips album and there’s a little bit of filler in here. I’m giving it a 4 but it’s really like a 4.75
Quite possibly the most popular Flaming Lips album, but it isn't my favorite. That being said, this is pretty fantastic. This is their legendary psych concept album, and it is just so colorful and emotionally complex for something that kind of presents itself as a little silly. The songs are amazing, the production is amazing, and the synths across this have a fantastic sound. Somehow, this isn't one I really analyze much, I kind of just put it on and get absorbed in it. This is a super rich, unique experience. I'm gonna hold off on the 5/5, but honestly, it could probably get there if the mood strikes me. I really do love this album.
Ahh the Flaming Lips. It was around this time they blew up for a third time. Seeing them live was a spectacular event. Sometimes they descended in a UFO, other times it was human sized hamster balls. Now this is one of those albums that is celebrated as one of their best, it is don't get me wrong but I started with them around the time they released a turn called Jesus Shooting Heroin. I love their Clouds Taste Metallic and Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. Those two albums can be put on and played and I will listen to them front to back over and over again. This album is a more serious album. As dumb as that is to write. It's still an experiment as it's kind of a concept album. It has some heavy discussions in it framed along well fighting robots. Yet the sound is consistent across the songs it's a cohesive album. I wish I could give it half stars. Its a solid 4.5 for me. It doesn't hit all the way around but it's so damn good. Really damn good, but for me, I miss the wild songs of earlier in their career where they were out there. This is them at middle age going, well we did a song about a Watermelon Gun, lets make an album that can be made into a musical. Also this got made I to a musical.
A really wonderful and imaginative album. The songs sound deceptively simple, and I’m not sure what to make of the overall theme (though it’s certainly more resonant now than it was when it was released). I’m torn as to whether it’s a three or a four.
A bit of a mixed bag, but quite enjoyable.
Good memories of this album. Helen loves it too.
Varsin loistavaa indierokkia 4/5
One of the most fascinating things I’ve heard since Joe Graham told me he knew a guy who thought Savage Garden were better than the Beatles. It was unique, quirky and really quite beautiful in places. Listening to it, I didn’t know if I’d been transported to a spa or the waiting room for the afterlife. It turned out that I was still just in my office, but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey nonetheless.
What if the super furry animals were good
This one’s really strong; high 4. Must have been inspired by super furry animals radiator
A few boring songs on here, but overall it was enjoyable Rounding up to a 4⭐️
It was a bit wacky in places, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.some of the tracks had good music videos as well. "Do You Realize??" was probbably the highlight for me.
Albums lends itself to full immersion. Lay in a dark room with headphones on and you will have a different experience than when you are out walking the dog or in the car. The synths, sometimes silk, sometimes steel. The bass is so squanchy for lack of a better word. Drums are tight. Vocals are decent. But the sounds will envelop you. The album is indeed a journey. There are times where you listen and you notice the albums potential influence. For instance I was listening to Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell and i was thinking how it sounded like something off of Tame Impala's Currents. Wouldn't be surprised if Kevin Parker enjoyed this album. Loved it. Favourite track - In the Morning of the Magicians. Smooth synths send shivers. Sonic, spacelike serenity. Songs swell, subdue, soar, sink softly. Sadness. Sobering. Shattering. Sweet sounds. Stars. Suns. Something sacred satisfied. 8/10
I liked this better than I though. Definitely reminds me of the Gorillaz.
Fun album that reminds me of college
For fans of Neo-Psychedelia, this album is a must-listen. Its laid-back and soothing tones make it perfect for starting or winding down your day. A great addition to any music collection.
Love this!! TFL are amazing! Sometimes I think they are just a little bit too much ”a
Pretty cool album
I felt some things I haven’t felt since I heard Comedown Machine on here. Not that it was an overall positive but that vibe was definitely alive and well all throughout this project. I like how weird it is, I like just about everything they did, but that Mercury Rev album clears this by far. Gonna have to stick to a 4 here.
This challenge finally gave me the time to listen to this album in full. I’m pleasantly surprised by the melodies on this record. The first thing I noticed was how similar the melody in ‘Fight Test’ sounds to Cat Stevens’ ‘Father and Son’ and having Googled it Stevens has a 75% royalty contribution. All in all a whacky album that deserves another listen!
asså typ jävligt najs drömmig pop
Had this album ages ago. Didn’t quite jive with it. Really enjoyed it this time.
I never got deep into The Flaming Lips. This is my most listened-to and favorite album of theirs. My favorite tracks and parts are actually more the instrumentals-- "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon" is one of my favorite songs of all time. This is nearly a perfect album. I would fault some of the production on the drums, and some bits are a bit abrasive to my ears. Some production is too busy. Some things get cheesy. Maybe I've heard "Do You Realize?" too many times. The opening tracks and flow are epic. I love this album, but it is imperfect.
A great album already in my collection but not something you can listen to that often
Many a night post-college were spent with this “not-concept” concept album. I think this was one of my first neo-psychedelia bands. An old friend’s favorite track was Yoshimi Battles …#2, in which Yoshimi gives that scream that exacerbates my PTSD from listening to this in various altered states at extremely high volume. It’s interesting listening to this now as it reflects a lot of Radiohead in its feel and ambiance. Key track is Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell. In the end, this album is weird, but in a good way, and was probably one of the best indie albums of the decade.
A really nice listen. I didn't notice anything that blew me away, but it felt very good to have doing its thing in the background. A sort of psychedelic rock, Bowie-esque album.
Banger this got added to the library
Amazing as always.. Spacey!
I'm overdue to listen to this album - I only knew a couple of tracks before. It's a really strong album. I love the electronic/spacey sounds mixed with strings, mixed with really interesting percussion, and the vocals are good too. I ended up spotify-liking 7 of 11 tracks. One surprise for me is that "Do You Realize??" is the top-played tracks; that's one of the 4 tracks that I didn't mark.
I did not use a private spotify session for this one. I have this on CD somewhere and listen stream a few times a year. I was always impressed how they could take a song like Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.1, which with it's head bobbing beat and hooks could have been a radio hit, but added lyrics about a girl fighting a robot to make sure it never went mainstream. I like the music and the fact the album has the theme.

Virkelig godt album.
This album was so chill, weird and enjoyable. Trippy as heck and for someone who is a bit stressed out most of the time, it was nice and calming/pleasing to listen to. Will likely listen again at some point.
Great album. Was great during it's time. Aged well.
Good
listented to at work! rocked with this one, couple of songs i'll hopefully revisit
I love this album - have since it came out. It's inventiveness, it's production - everything. It falls off a little at the end, which is fairly common for concept records of this era and ilk, but that doesn't stop it from being an absolutely awesome listen. So happy to revisit this.
Beautiful instrumentals and songs overall. Very enjoyable. One of the songs was a little screamy for a second but the rest were great - a mix of dreamy and fun.
Very fun! Added a few songs to my playlists
Reminds me of entering Yellowstone
When this album is hittin' it's really great. I've long been a fan of this album, and approaching it with fresh eyes I think it holds up very well. A couple of songs are duds, though, and there are a bit too many bleeps and bloops to make this a 5-star (even if the bleeps and bloops make sense with the concept of the album).
Great all around, layered and unique
Already heard, but I don't think I was paying too much attention, because this is way better than I remember. I really love the drum machine use and synths with the filter modulations, like in the 3rd one. I guess its kinda a concept album, or more so a sort of story, which is quite interesting I guess. Great guitars and singing as well. Just straight up good, well-written songs, which don't really take themselves too seriously in the best possible way. Favourite songs: all of them. Overall around 8/10 (maybe 9 I'll think about it)
One of the best albums of the genre
Always had a good time with this one
I liked this more than I thought I would. Maybe I’ve never actually listened to The Flaming Lips. They went on some weird tangents, but overall a pretty pleasant listen.
This was a pleasant surprise. A little eclectic at times, but I found this album generally pretty groovy. This might enter the rotation for me.
I thought this was a cool album! I mostly enjoyed it but it did get a bit experimental for me to really love it. Never listened to The Flaming Lips before, but I'd be interested to hear more of their stuff. Standouts: Flight Test, Do you Realize Rating: 4.00/5
This is a great record that drags a little in the middle.
have the t-shirt from this album from seeing them at a fest the second time. first time listening to the album all the way through. favs were title track pt. 1, in the morning of the magicians, it’s summertime, do you realize? and approaching pavonis… gave tame impala but also psychadelic 70s/80s poppy experimental hippie who did lots of drugs.
Saw them live once and it was amazing
Enjoyed this more than I thought, range if sounds from Pink Floyd to Tame Impala sounding. Pretty cool
8.0/10
Fight test is a good song. Reminds me of watching the wheels by John Lennon. Mellow, but a good tune. Yoshima vs the Robots was also good, not the Magicians one. Quite like ego tripping, very mellow
Fk weird man
Beautiful driving music.
Really loved the intro 4 tracks, particularly the first track. It’s interesting to finally hear the album “Do You Realize” comes from. It captures the sound of the album and makes sense it’s the breakout song that everyone knows.
Now this I was around for when it came out. Pretty good listen.
4 out of 5. This album was very enjoyable from start to finish.
The first song sounded like electric cat stevens in a good way. I really enjoyed this, it was just 'different' enough to challenge me, but had real heart. 'Do You Realize?' really stayed with me. **I just listened to this again and it's great!! This is only my second album with this though, so it's hard to give a 5⭐ this early**
Great production, music ok but not amazing
Extremely cool record that expertly blends "standard" melodic indie rock with electronic flourishes and trippy songwriting. 4.5/5
Pretty groovy. Reminded me of Tame Impala. Does get a bit pretentious at times, bit not to the point it's offensive.
Really enjoyed rediscovering this one.
Liked it.
Who needs drugs when you have this? Though, I'll bet if you DID have drugs, it would take this to next-level slow-trance. I actually liked this more than I thought I would - and as an album overall, more than I did at certain times during it. It tends to meander, but I suspect terseness would prohibit sufficient runway for tripping. In the right mood, and on the right prescription, I would voluntarily revisit this.
Love it. Life background music. Never gave them much thought, saw them open for weeper and it was a tad…there. This album builds the painting color by color.
of course i love this smh
A lot of bangers but not all were great
This album was cool it felt like the opposite of OK computer lol
Nice instrumental experimental. Nice to listen to in the background
awesome and forever cool. what a fun story
I love this one and completely forgot about it. It's just so dang pleasant to listen to. Kind of dreamy, sweeping and quietly dramatic. It is best listened to in the whole while there are a few tracks that stand great on their own. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots pt1 is my favorite and will be stuck in my head all day!
Oikein hyvä levy! Melodiat ja tunnelmat tuntuivat oikein hyvältä
Some of the dissonance in the album are more a detraction than a counter point
Pretty sure this is my first intentional listening of anything by The Flaming Lips. This was definitely a unique album but full of talent and insane creativity. A couple of songs that I didn't love listening to but they served a proper narrative purpose. Really cool. Not sure yet if I'm going to be rating these on the album as a piece of art or my personal opinions of them... This would be high as a piece of art but my opinion was maybe a 3.5
kinda like the synth thing
According to the Wikipedia article, the band says that this is not a concept album but it sure sounds like one. I had no real notions about this one going in but it surprised me and I really enjoyed this.
Really good, closer to 5 than 4
Really wish it carried on with the robot battle theme I think that was the best part of the album for me (part 1 especially), still good nonetheless, really like the mix of electronic and a more accessible poppy acoustic sound, very chilled and dreamy, wasn’t a fan all the time, sometimes it felt a bit too poppy mostly on “its summertime” and “do you realise??”, liked all of the songs a lot other than that though and the loose themes not revolving around yoshimi and the robots were still pretty cool. Overall a strong 4 (8/10).
-been excited to listen to this one.. it did not disappoint. it’s so creative and absolutely beautiful!! perfect to listen to while the sun was setting on my walk. sort of reminds me of Gorillaz but perhaps even a bit more elegant in terms of sound and concept -I have been strongly seized by the urge to listen to it again… my rating could definitely go up I think -Favorites are One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, and In The Morning of the Magicians
Really enjoyed this, took me on a journey and i'm sure this will grow on me even more as I keep listening to it. 4/5 for now, but probably will reach 5/5 when I get a chance to really listen to it a lot
some of this is good, some of this is real weird. exactly what I expected.
Super fun listen!
One of my favourite bands live, and a great album. Just short of 5 star status as it loses a little momentum towards the end. The highlights are incredibly high though!
Some of the psychedelia and general overproduction hasn't aged well, and there are a few duds, but I really like alot of these songs, esp fight test, yoshimi, ego tripping at the gates of hell. I think what I might be responding to is the sense of whimsy that drives alot of this. Too much whimsy can obviously be annoying if it feels artificial or self-amused, but to me, the flaming lips have always felt like genuine weirdos pursuing their own strange interests, which is my favorite kind of artist, even if the execution may be a little uneven. I don't know why but the way coyne sings the line 'you won't let those robots eat me' in such a sincere, earnest tone has always made me laugh. This is probably more like a 3.5 or so but rounding up because these days I like any art with a general anti-robot theme.
i really quite enjoyed this, although i lost track like really quickly. pretty summery but also felt like such a trip like i had no clue what was happening lol, felt like a storyline omg so kewlll
okay i do kind of love this, had to skip third song halfway through though because what in the hell was that. "ego tripping at the gates of hell" was added to the playlist! lowkey giving radiohead but different font, like a bit happier i think, especially "its summertime" which was another favourite and was added to the playlist.
Not really any stand out songs but it was a pleasant listening experience as a whole. The first song reminded me so much of Father and Son by Cat Stevens that I had to look it up and yep, Cat Stevens receives royalties from the song. I was going to give a 4 but the best song being basically a cover of a better song brings it down a bit. However, I think the rest of the album is pleasant enough to just about keep the 4.
have loved this album for years. drags on a bit near the end
Owned this album when it came out and I remember it the same as I hear it now - some amazing songs and a lot of slow, unmemorable dirges. Fight Test, Yoshimi, and Do You Realize are classics, but overall not as great as The Soft Bulletin.
Great album. Probably Flaming Lips best.
I fucking love The Flaming Lips. Need to listen to more of them. Great album.
I thought from my memory I would enjoy this more than I did, there are still songs that I love from this album but there is more smelling your own fart style songs on here than I remember so will have to knock a star off.
Great for late afternoon/evening drives. The songs are mellow and enjoyable. Not my favorite for working or doing something active.
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots was certainly a very charming album. This album mainly seems to take after the soft rock elements from The Flaming Lips' prior album The Soft Bulletin but adds quite a bit of quirk and even somewhat of a story in the lyrics (Well, enough to the point of this album getting a whole musical based on it). A lot of the electronic elements here make me think that this album is the second closest one to being a lo-fi album too (closest being DJ Shadow's Endtroducing...) which i actually do quite like as the songs have a unique relaxing vibe. I did feel that there were points when the album gets a little too long but i still enjoyed this one quite a fair bit. Best Song: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21 Worst Song: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 2
It was actually so good.
sentimental value + renewed appreciation for this one revisiting it here
4/5 Felt the way cream soda tastes until the fourth track. Then it felt the way soda water tastes. Then immediately after it was just soda bubbles, warm sun, and the smell of strawberry vapes. Absolutely bizzare and so much fun.
Do you Realize?? and In the Morning of the Magicians are life-changing.
I already know this one is a favourite.
4.5 - fantastic album
Great start with Yoshimi pt1 being an absolute banger then pt2 threw away all my excitement. Thankfully this was the only bad song because the rest of the tracks were fantastic and a great outro instrumental that ties it all together. Overall a very strong cohesive gloopy album. Top tracks: Yoshimi pt1, do you realize??, Approaching Pavonis Mons
Started fairly indifferent, and left a fan. Good album
Love some dreampop
really liked some songs. title song stuck in my head the last 2 days. lots of other great songs too. will definitely be on repeat for the next few days/weeks
Great
It’s nice to get one you know and like one in awhile
An album I have always enjoyed - but never loved as much as I thought I should have given the critical reception it received at the time. I'm probably a 7/10 on this - but again will round up as the sun is shining.
Honestly, a little different but I liked it.
cool stuff, very unique, 4/5 i think.
Three days after the generator gave me Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens, it gives me an album that begins with a rip-off of Father and Son. To be fair though, this album also proves that Flaming Lips have some great tunes of their own (although I do prefer The Soft Bulletin).
it's alright
Really cool mix of radio head and Pink Floyd. This album encompasses so much about what I love in the early 2000s indie scene.
Psychedelic and experimental, fun listen that tells a story. Standout tracks: Battle pt. 2, In the morning of magicians. Battle pt 2 feels like a battle with a clash between drums and synth.
For the most part, a stunningly, beautiful and moving musical experience however it does get bogged down occasionally. And spins its wheels.
Really liked this album - the deluxe edition was cool.
Great live act to boot!
This is, it's true, a pretty uneven album. but for one thing it's impossible to separate myself from who I was when it came out. and also, the highs are so good, and the whole thing does a great job of creating a sonic world that's consistent throughout.
This was a good atmospheric album that I enjoyed. Not enough to say it was great, but still pretty good. Four stars.
Kinda cool, kinda weird. solid album.
Lovely 👄
The instrumentals were great. The tunes were sublime. But the vocals were a really big letdown for me. The vocalist sounded very much like Passenger but without his singing skill. Most of the tunes were memorable. Ego tripping at the gates of hell, It's summertime, the title song, say. The guitars of the title song are really something. 'She's a black belt in Karate.'
One of my favourite neo-psych bands The Flaming Lips make a really good concept album about cancer. The lyrical content and production on these songs are really bright but also really bittersweet and melancholic. The glitchy acoustic guitar on the title track to the choir supported chorus of "Do You Realise??" (Which is probably this bands best song). It's a pretty emotional journey and Wayne Coyne's vocals are so good on this 8/10 Favourite: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Least Favourite: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21
I've heard a lot of praise for this album without ever listening to it (apart from 'Do You Realize?') so it's nice to finally give it a chance. The first impression is that it's a quirky, melodic, soothing album that could potentially grow on me with multiple listens.
Saw a couple cool woodpeckers
Tough one to rate— really great highs but my mind was drifting during the rest of the tracks. Those futuristic guitar distortions are pretty sick though
I don't know what it is about this album but I love it.
Beetje slow and spacy. Langzame Peach Pit. Wel oke.
One of the best albums of the early 2000s with a # of great songs. However I find it tough listen to all the way through. The rhythms and melodies are not varied enough and parts of the album bore me. Still a classic and the Flaming Lips best
Sounds like Air, animal collective, tame impala at times, yeah yeah yeahs at times. Tho distinctly American. Enjoyed it!
Loved it, original and creative. A 4.5 if I could give it
Blake- 3.5 Tre- 3.5 H- 4
I guess I never really checked out this band. I thought I'd hate it. I'll be back.
She do be battling those pink robots
I liked this one a good bit.
Shout out to the titles of the song, which are all excellent.
I think I listened to this a bit too much when it first came out. I was obsessed. I still think it's an amazing album but it feels like they lose some steam about half way through.
Oo
Dope
I never got as into this album as other people did, especially at the time of its release. However, it is a very good album. It just doesn't hit any higher level to me, as it mostly just glides past with the same feeling the whole time, which, again, is good but doesn't connect with me on a deep level.
Cool futuristic pop-rock. Not digging the vocal a lot.
Took me forever to write this up, it’s a hard album to properly put into words how I feel about it because when it works it works so well musically, lyrically & emotionally. Always been kind of obsessed with the tone of the lead’s voice here - the way he sings things like “she’s a black belt in karate” is a proper ear worm for me. The album is so much fun, at first a lot of it seems campy but as you listen more intently there’s real depth here musically to support the initial campiness. As the album goes on we keep returning to points about what it means to be human & what it means to love. Huge fan of the dreamlike psychedelic quality throughout - The acoustic guitar/ overall feel complimented by a largely electronic backing really completes the experience. A couple of missteps here maybe individually, but as a whole every song earns its place in the album itself. Not at all surprised this was made into a musical at one point. Very surprised to find that Sorkin was attached at one point during the west wing years.
This! This Flaming Lips album is the undeniable triumph that made me fond of them. Previously wrote a meh review their older album, The Soft Bulletin, and I think this means they grew a lot in the time in between.
Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of synthesizer? Well in Yoshini Battles The Robots pt1 you can! I rate it a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of drums? Well in it's summertime you can! I rate it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in do you realize you can! I rate It a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I highly recommend this song.
I thought the cover looked weird. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1" is good. I like the start, the music is nice. The lyrics are a bit strange though. "Do you realize" was good. I liked the guitar and the lyrics. "It's Summertime" was good. I enjoyed the mix of country and techno. The lyrics were sad. I would recommend this album.
This is hands down one of my all-time favorites. A kitschy, fuzzy, psychedelic odyssey in the form of a sci-fi anime rock opera. Every song is cinematic, melodious, and fun. Covering topics like sentient robots and vitamin-eating Japanese schoolgirls. 4⭐️
I didn't really know what to expect with this one but it's pretty good. I enjoy many of the sounds they used. I also followed the loose concept pretty well and it's a good one. Overall, the music wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good, and this is a very consistent album. The vocals and instrumentation are nice and clean, and the songs are written well. Not wholly my style but still a treat to listen to. Favorite Song: Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell Least Favorite Song: All We Have is Now
the title track (or the first part of it) was my first exposure to "electronica", or any real electronic music. sitting in the back of my parents' Ford station wagon at night, I was about six years old listening to a mix CD, filled with grainy iTunes downloads. I wondered what could make drums sound like that, or what that weird squishy sounding noise was making a melody. nothing else really sounded like it. later on, as a full grown adult, i thought i wouldn't be charmed by The Flaming Lips' quirky brand of psychedelics. these were the gummy skull guys, the 24 hour skull song guys, the Heady Fwends "blood filled vinyl that has to be delivered by hand by the band itself" guys. i thought it would be empty twee gimmick with some enjoyable highs. and of course, i was wrong. like, there are a few parts that still feel a bit cutesy. i do think the high pitched vocals can be a bit Fraggle Rock-y at points, especially on "Do You Realize??" -- but man, what a sense of melody the group has. Wayne Coyne's voice isn't impressive, but it's very consistent, and the shakiness of him hitting higher notes feels less like he's straining and more like he's stretching it out, relaxed and not tense. an early summer record if i've ever heard one, just warm and sunshiny in every single one of its song palettes. i wanna lie on a hill on a clear blue and windy day and feel blown away.
Two thumbs up. Title track is a bop.
🤘
Dreamy, bright, creative, and lovely. The bass and bottom-heavy parts of the production are especially striking. The writing has greatly improved from 'The Soft Bulletin', which I liked instrumentally but was underwhelmed by the lyricism and lead vocal performance. Those problems are gone here and the arrangements are even better. I dig a concept album too, even if the story is really only apparent on the first few tracks. Sunny day music.
rips!
generally its a little too ambient and spacey for my taste but there is some nice grooves on here
Oh boy. I'm in for a ride today... Surprisingly good. It’s unique, and it’s weird, but in a good way. I think much of their stuff tends to be weird for the sake of it, but I understand why this is such a beloved album.
Big disc
cool indie psychedelic sound
Really liked this one...unlike anything else...
Beautiful album! Will definitely be revisited
I read the description of the album before starting to listen and almost vomited. Semi-concept album, dear lord.... Majority of albums during this listening exercise hasn't raised a need for second listening to give an opinion but this one did. After first run I didn't know was this good or awesome. After second run I know this wasn't 5 star awesome level and after third run I don't know do I have any reason to give this anything less than 4 stars. There is something freaking intriguing that I cant exactly point what it is.
Peak.
So, uh, I tried to listen to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and fell asleep. Nice refreshing 7 hours, but not a great endorsement. 2002. I was 18 when this album came out, and I remember being politely baffled by all the people who loved it. It's perfectly lovely music, I don't hate it, it's just not giving off the energy I look for in music I actively listen to.
85/100.
A bit great but also quite a lot nuts!
Silly and joyful. Good amount of bass. Felt like I dived into a new world. Not sure why I never listened to this album given that I know 'Do You Realize??' so well. Bonus points for the album cover.
I really enjoyed this. Can’t believe I’ve never listened to it before. Reminds me of something we’d have listened to at uni during my musical discovery phase
I’ve never really gone in on the Flaming Lips outside of the half a dozen songs by them I knew. Upon listening to this album, it turns out that I’ve been quite the silly goose over not going in previously, as this is great! I especially like the obvious influence of uncool 70’s bands like ELO and 10cc on the songs here. Their shadow seeps nicely into the albums poppier moments and contrasts nicely with albums other main vibe: crushing ennui.
interesting!
Another interesting, pleasing album and the anti-robot sentiment is hitting just right these days
have listened before but it’s better than I remember
Love this album. relisted several times and will come back again. Love the guitar on ego tripping
Modern psych rock classic. Excellent use of melody. Unfortunately a couple tracks bordering on dud status keep it out of 5 territory
The first few songs here were quirky and different which I had an appreciation for, though further in the album there were slower songs with sad undertones which I guess wasn’t bad but also lowkey a buzzkill. I still enjoyed their sound and would listen to the first few songs again.
8/10
I get the impression that quite a few albums on this list are trying to do something similar to what this does. But rarely as well as this. I enjoyed this enough to listen several times. It’s a bit odd but I enjoyed the good bits enough to go back again. It’s not perfect but it’s half decent.
I listened to this with my daughter and she liked it.
funky and weird in a way i really like, consistently good the whole way through
A wild ride of a concept album that can make you laugh, imagine, and cry. What more could you want? There are a few misses that have it fall out of being a 5 for me and they come at the end of the album. “All we have is now” and “approaching pavonis mons by balloon” are the weakest tracks. Everything before that holds a special place in my heart. Side note, I saw this album performed in its entirety last summer, flaming lips fanfare and all, and it was amazing. Weird ages better than cool, and the Flaming Lips make that apparent.
I think this album really rocks, it's accessible and poppy but still has the idiosyncrasies of the Lips' personality baked into it - just a really fun listen. And Sameen and I saw the Pink Robots IN PERSON last year!!
A super formative album for me but I haven't really kept up with TFL that much. Album still really rocks and is very fun and nice
always liked this in hs but sorta fell to the wayside as i aged... seeing them live this past summer made me really fall in love with a lot of these songs again ... really pretty music and so positive and nice vibes
I think the album as a whole was a good listening experience even though I didn't particularly like every individual song. Apart from that one song in the middle which literally made my ears explode I think every other song was exactly the style of songs that I like to listen to. I really love the album cover. The instrumentals were great. Solid album overall
2002. Neo-psychedelia,space rock, dream pop acid rock. 8,5/10 Fight Test, All We Have Is Now
It’s really hard to follow up a masterpiece and this album will forever live in the shadow of The Soft Bulletin. A lot to like here in strands. Wayne creating the modern Flaming Lips universe. Lush soundscapes, good lyrics to meditate on issues, driving drums, synth, orchestra. You can hear them coming to life. Not really a concept album, but with a title like that, it’s hard to divorce the expectation. Ultimately the songs all just kinda float.
My first album of the 1001 day journey of listening to an album everyday. It'll be a very long but exciting and eye opening road. Enough talk, heres my opinion. I really liked it. It gave off strong "Pavement" vibes; the band, not an actual pavement. The first song, "Fight Test" is probably my favorite, but it's really hard to choose. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1 would have to be 2nd place. Very well made instrumentals and vocals. I like the theme of the album, with a girl battling pink robots, which I think is pretty funny and unique. Anyways, the album gets a strong 4/5. I'm not gonna rate it too high because this is the first album so I want to set a consistent baseline. Anyway, I highly recommend and it was super enjoyable to listen to, a strong start.
A lush woozy psychedelic indie rock opera. The signature sound is the contrast between the over-the-top orchestral arrangements and the very barebones acoustic guitar + drum machine + thin warbly vocals at the heart the songs. This works very well to create the sense of an overwhelming and alienating mismatch between the self and the environment - the core theme of the opera's story.
TBH I never liked The Flaming Lips because I didn't love them in the 90s when I learned about them and then over time I ended up knowing more about Wayne Coyne than I knew about his music. I edited a couple interviews with him when I was copyediting circa 2011-2015, when he was hanging out with Miley Cyrus and briefly made it into the gossip news again, and I just felt like he was trying too hard to be strange and cool. But this album is strange and cool! And I feel like they were trying just the right amount. Also, the dude grew up in Oklahoma City, so being that strange and trying to be rockstar cool was probably pretty traumatic and who am I to judge anyway?
I think it’s what they’re going for, but it feels like one of those trips where you ate just a little bit more than you should have - mostly awesome, but a little uncomfortable here and there.
Beautiful! I've never heard this before but I will for sure give it a few more listens.
When this came out I was fully in my “this sounds like Radiohead so therefore it’s a ripoff”. It took me years to appreciate not only this album but the band as a whole. They’re really the best at the mashup between indie, alternative, and just weird. Nobody sounds like this while at the same time being super polished and being capable of writing totally different albums every time. Out of all the lips’ albums, this is my favorite. I haven’t listened to the whole catalogue but I think I’ve hit most of it and this is such a stalwart. It’s got the feel of a 90s band reaching to figure out what works in an increasingly produced and electronic made world. The theme helps of course but that’s what makes this so special. The music and the theme of the whole album line up perfectly. The title track and “it’s summertime” are my faves, though I like nearly all of it, the beginning especially. Only complaint is that by the end the songs start to melt together and the general vibe of it all is so relaxed that you forget what’s happening. That could be a good thing!
4.5. very close to being perfect.
Classic 2000's psychedelia
4/5
This album has a great start and the title track fucking rips. Broadly, the album captures a lot of the synth and electronic experimentation of the late 60's or early 70's. Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell is solid. Do You Realize is not my favorite track but carries a sort of modern 60s aesthetic. A solid album.
Quite a weird one too! Appreciate how the songs connect and it flows right from start to end. It really feels like they are telling a story!
Loved this at the time of release, never really connected with them at other points in their discography. A strong four from me.
Wonderful production and lighthearted, charming song concepts. An upgrade from the soft bulletin.
This album was a trip. I think you have to listen to this album completely in a row. Trying to pick and choose songs, would lessen the experience. A strong album
trippy alt-rock with an interesting narrative that doesn’t feel like it was just inspired by psychedelics lol. the album had some unique, funky elements I love and don’t often see in the genre, while still having that nice alt rock feeling of lifting thru the air. I would love to listen to this album again looking out the window of an airplane or on a long train ride! love “fight test” and “ego tripping at the gates of hell” alongside the main “yoshimi battle” songs :^)
Something I could listen to in the mornings, while making coffee and making breakfast. Very chill. I liked it.
Two days in a row, I've gotten albums from the same decade, and they both happen to be albums that I've listened to before. I should go buy a lottery ticket. I've already reviewed the Soft Bulletin (it was my first time listening to it, and I absolutely loved it), but I haven't listened to Yoshimi in a hot minute. I own a copy of this album though, and I think it was word of mouth from friends that persuaded me to buy it. Or maybe it was the fact that I was about to see them at a festival? Or maybe I bought it after that festival? I don't remember, but whatever the case, I'm excited to jump back into this album! Jumping back into this album today made me realize why I don't really revisit it very often. It's a very good album, but it can be kind of a chore to get through at times. The songwriting is excellent, but some of these songs don't really have a lot of lyrics to them, and they tend to meander with long instrumental sections until they conclude. They're not bad songs to listen to, but they can make this album a bit tedious. The overall work here is impressive, and themes of man's relationships with technology are still relevant today, and maybe even more so, as AI threatens to give the rich a way to hijack creative processes. There's a lot to take in with your ears on this album, but "Fight Test" and "Do You Realize??" are easily the best songs on the album. "Fight Test" heavily borrows its sound from Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam's "Father and Son" (I love reading Wayne Coyne's response to the whole kerfuffle), but the Flaming Lips heavily infuse Islam's chords with their own psychedelic sound. "Do You Realize??" has a chaotically majestic sound that evokes images in my mind of a choir singing it; I picture Tom Delaughter dancing around while the rest of the Polyphonic Spree sings behind him as confetti rains down from the sky. I find the lyrics to "Do You Realize??" incredibly poetic and beautiful. As I approach middle age and start to realize how little time I have left with my older loved ones, the mantra of this song provides a beautiful center where I can acknowledge how brief life is, while being spurred on to cherish the time I've had and make the best use of the time I have left. While this album isn't a five star for me, I still think it's really good, and it easily deserves a place on this list.
i came into this album with absolutely zero expectations or prior knowledge and i was very pleasantly surprised to find that i loved it! this is exactly the type of sad indie rock with a twist that was a staple in my high school days and still holds a very special place in my heart so idk why i haven’t listened to them before- this album will definitely be going in my future rotation though, and i’m excited to check out more of the Flaming Lips work
I was shocked how much I liked this! Really strong first half but I didn't feel as captivated by the second half
Interesting, pretty, melodic. I enjoyed.
It's a nice vibe, and I loved One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, plus the title track was good fun. After a while, it all sort of washed together into a wispy blur. There's a lot I like about it, but I don't know if I'm finding it truly memorable.
Fight test Yoshimi battles the pink robots pt1 Do you realise
Nice little album! I felt like there were exactly two standout, really really good tracks, but aside from that it was just decent. Was surprised by the other elements in this album, because I was expecting just rock. Fav Songs: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, Do You Realize??
Chill, dreamy vibe. Can't understand a bunch of lyrics but don't care. Just want to close my eyes and sway. Makes me want to put it on loud in the house and get lost cleaning. Are they hypnotists?
Airy psychedelic vibes, liked it more than i thought i would
Do you realize makes this a 4.
4 - at some points its electronic elton john, at others it has beat switches that rival the best hiphop product, and at others its the most introspective and serene look at our finite lives I might have to go back to this one, but I really think the two Yoshimi Battles songs (the title track funnily enough) are what ruins the 5 for me
Very good. Real Grower. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1 is a killer tune. Must listen to it some more.
Weird, but wonderful. And also very weird. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, but I eventually settled for the higher.
perrtyy good but not better than the sogfy machibolletin
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots feels like the Flaming Lips finally learning how to focus their strangeness into something emotionally coherent. It is still odd, still playful, still full of synth squelches and wide eyed sci-fi imagery, but this time there is a real sense of shape and intent holding it together. The album moves with purpose, balancing childlike wonder with genuine feeling in a way that makes the surreal elements feel meaningful rather than distracting. What works best is how the album uses its concept loosely rather than rigidly. The idea of Yoshimi and the robots becomes a frame for themes of fear, love, mortality, and vulnerability, rather than a literal story that needs to be followed. Songs like “Do You Realize?” and “Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell” land because they are emotionally direct, even when wrapped in weird textures. There is a warmth here that cuts through the gloss, a sense that beneath the costumes and effects is something sincere and human. It stops short of being a full five because it occasionally leans too hard into its own whimsy. A few moments feel overly cute or emotionally signposted, as if the album is nudging you to feel something rather than trusting you to get there on your own. Still, those missteps are minor compared to how much this record gets right. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is imaginative, emotionally open, and surprisingly tender, an album that manages to be strange without being alienating.
I had high hopes for this one since The Soft Bulletin is one of my favorite finds from this list. I think it carries on from that record well but doesn’t quite have the same creativity or hooks. It just feels a little more toned down in comparison. I would say it’s still a good listen but not quite the ride of Soft Bulletin. 7/10
Music for acid trips.
Actually never listened to this album all the way through, really enjoyed it. Feels very indie film soundtrack
The Flaming Lips have been lucky enough to accomplish a feat many bands wish they could achieve, but few actually do. They have reworked their own sound numerous times when releasing new records. But have never fully abandoned what makes them unique or special. The core of what has fueled the band for so long has never been forgotten, which is what has allowed them to stay so consistent. And when you really look at what they have created, they have potentially one of the most fun discography’s of any band ever. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which sounds straight from a cartoon, is probably the best known album by the band. It’s also sort of a concept album, although I think that concept only really comes through in the two parts of the title track, which are great songs either way. Much like I was saying earlier, this isn’t exactly the same as The Soft Bulletin. But it still contains much of the DNA which made that record so good. The fuzzy explosiveness is substituted for a much glitzier and more dream pop adjacent sound. But that’s all still wrapped up in that really nice quirky psychedelic blanket. There are also aspects of electronic music being brought in, even more so than the previous album. This would definitely contribute to ideas they would tackle later on down the line. I think the best this has to offer is on par with the best of The Soft Bulletin. But I still find it to be a better album overall than this. Ultimately though, this is still another banger from one of psychedelic rock’s most inspiring and wacky groups. Rating: 7/10
Great album. Feels like a major influence behind a lot of music that I hear today. The lyrics have a way of grabbing your attention, and are articulated pretty well compared to a lot of bands, which makes them more impactful in my opinion.
I didn't care much for this album when I first heard it, years ago. I liked one or two of the songs, but not the album as a whole. Some fewer years ago, I realized I did. And it became something I started to crave. I did really like The Kelptones mashup album that was this plus Queen's night at the opera (or maybe some other random songs actually) It's a pretty funky album. Pt 2 of the titular song isn't always enjoyable to listen to due to the screeching. The story of the album is Yoshimi battling the evil pink robots; narrated by someone watching from the sidelines, cheering her on. Allegorically, I think the ablum is about getting old. Yoshimi is the metaphorical inner child and the pink robots are the pressures of conforming to adulthood. Or maybe it's an album about being abused?
A cornerstone band in my early 20s, but in my memory Soft Bulletin was more preeminent than Yoshimi. I’d had it down as a bit of a disappointment. Odd what memory does, because it’s a great album and one that I know almost every note of. Great band; this may have been a creative, as well as commercial, peak. Perhaps familiarity blunted its impact at the time, as it was ubiquitous. A lengthy pause has reminded me of its majesty.
A great sci fi album. Whether it is fully conceptual or not, it is fun. My favorite track is Do you Realize? but it is all a good time. 4/4
Bittersweet whimsy may be a pretty niche style of music, but the Flaming Lips are the undisputed kings of it. I'll always see The Soft Bulletin as their real masterpiece, but even the somewhat more streamlined songs of Yoshimi manage to simultaneously bring a tear to your eye and a smile to your face.
This was pretty good, easy to listen to - but no songs were outstanding to the point of making me want to listen to the album again
8/10
Sci Fi themed album from my teenage years? Of course this sits in my heart.
I've noticed it's kind of become a thing to say you never really liked these records that much really anyway because of various reasons not least the awful way they treated Erykah Baduh. But I can't deny this record still sounds great.
# Playlist track - Do You Realize? # Notes - A very interesting surprise! Some sort of experimental weird sci-fi not-quite-rock-opera. - I didn't really enjoy it the first time around, to be honest. But as I got back to it a couple more times, I ended up finding it interesting. Charming, even. - This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's worth experiencing it anyway.
Some part of me thinks this would have been better if they didn't overlay the effects and just played the songs straight. Still some great songs and do you realise is definitely top ten songs of that decade. 3.5*
Well, I like this album enough to have it in my collection on vinyl. That said, is it a *great* album?
a quirky and spacey rock album, the aesthetics inspired from japanese science fiction and a title dedicated to a japanese musician. this album gives listeners a fresh and technologically-advanced take on the progressive genre at times, with other influences from pop giving it a sound all its own. it has a short length, and some tracks are a bit hazy or not as interesting as others, but generally this one is a good listen.
The re-invention - I know it is trite but for lack of a better word - that this group goes through from album to album is amazing. It is hard to pin them down they are ever changing.
Kind of an old comfort listen from college days. I haven't gone back to it and I had forgotten most of the tracks, but it really feels like such a cohesive album. 3.5
Hard to argue with anything here, it's always been a vibe
For some reason, I had it in my head that I didn't like The Flaming Lips??? I actually enjoyed this album! It was very vibey music. Nothing in particular stood out, but I'd listen again.
8/10 I really liked this. Weird in the best possible way and a unique sound Favourite Song=Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell Least Favourite Song=One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21
Wow rock anime...This is weird and unhinge and I love this. Giving me science fiction vibe! The only promblem is that there are too many synthesizer sounds...I'm really not a fan for that. But it is unique, it has many fresh sounds. A cool album. Between 3.5/5 and 4/5 i'd say. With fewer sythesizer noises it's definitely above 4.
A good album, but has some songs that miss the mark a bit for me. However, I still like it.
Great album. I’ve listened to it for years. Cool concept and great songs.
Dreamy, outgoing music, with an air of confidence and a carefree attitude. This reminds me of the writing of PNAU a more modern artist, but in style it is much similar to, the Eagles, ELO, and adopts a music production style of natural drums and organic synths similar to early tame impala.
TFL have always married odd sounds into really palatable songs. When you are singing a happy little bop that sounds like you are skipping through a park meadow but the song is actually about someone fighting robots and you are enjoying it, that’s a vibe. I truly enjoyed this album. The little hidden gems within the songs had me listening harder to try to discover all the layers.
It's hard not to rate such a personally nostalgic abum five stars, but the first track is the real stand out, and the rest just doesn't hit as hard
I am a certified fan of The Flaming Lips after this record. It combines punk elements with more a melodic, full, almost Beatles-esque sound so beautifully. Definitely a vibe I can get behind and look forward to delving into more. Notable Tracks: - Fight Test - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 - In the Morning of the Magicians - Do You Realize?? 8/10
Love the weird, wonderful vibes in this one. Wish there was more an overarching theme to unify the rest of the album, but nearly all the songs had me nodding my head along. 'Do You Realize??' is a great existential trip.
In the Morning of the Magicians, It's Summertime, Do You Realize??, All We Have Is Now.
This was an album I've heard a few tracks off of already. As a contiguous album. It's wonderful. I've heard a lot of praise over the years for the flaming lips but haven't really been dedicated to setting out a blessing. I will absolutely listen to this album again. Then we'll have to be in the right mood.
This was so lovable. Talks about humanity and mortality with such bittersweetness and kindness. Bizarre and beautiful. I could see myself liking this more and more.
i appreciate the creativity
How do you follow up a sonic and textural masterpiece like The Soft Bulletin? With a more electronic-leaning concept album about a Japanese girl fighting robots that represent her terminal illness, of course! The production on this is absolutely stellar, it sounds so serene and otherworldly, and the songwriting is just very fun
A interesting and enjoyable sonic experience that layers electronic music with vocals, guitar and percussion.
I was going to go 4 here, but upon listening for the first time in a bit I was super reminded how brilliant this album is and was going to go 5--like, nothing else sounds like this. In the end I think it's a 4.5 and I'm actually going back to 4 because I think The Soft Bulletin is their apex and I assume it will pop up.
3.5 going up
Favorite Track: Do You Realize??
Concept album with a vague sci-fi setting so I'm automatically going to like it
I liked this way better than I anticipated. The production is insane, and it makes for a replayable record.
I became a fan of The Flaming Lips with their last album but this one is a cracker too, All the tracks are great but Do You Realize is head in shoulders above everything else.
There’s a lot to like about this. But I’ve always struggled with Wayne Coynes weedy whiny voice. And Fight Test reminds me too much of the Father and Son cover by Boyzone. Just when I’m starting to get on with it the Whiney dirge that is “do you realise” comes on. I probably didn’t mind it first time I heard it but it’s been played to death. It’s a lot better when he’s not singing.
Takes you on a trip
Nice, mellow, inoffensive sounds with a cool electronic vibe. Definitely an easy listen, and I might give it another go later. This will be a four-star album for me.
Artwork is so cool. In the Morning of Magicians is such a beautiful tune.
Pretty fun.
I haven't really listened to an album like this before, but I enjoyed it. Only a few songs particularly stuck out to me (e.g. Are You a Hypnotist??) but I'll remember this album and relisten to it in the future, maybe then something'll hit me.
A flowing ebb of guitar and synth that tell a beautiful story. Every song is it's own unique piece.
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips (2002) o sonho no espaço e ácido? Melhores músicas: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2, In the Morning of the Magicians, Are You a Hypnotist?, It's Summertime, Do You Realize?? Piores músicas: N/A 3.75/5
Really consistent album, no bad tracks, but its not too mind blowing so i just think its weird for me to give it a 10, its still good
Muito bom. Nostálgico

I really liked the distortion that they put in and it was just fun and really odd in a good way. It was very unexpected even though I had heard two songs going in.
I wasn't expecting to like this, but really did. More and more as it went on too.
My first listen of the flaming lips. I enjoyed it. I'd listen to more.
Pretty good.
This is a great psychedelic rock album. I was already familiar with the entire album. It's sort of comforting to me, despite a few harsher moments. My favorite song is probably Fight Test but really the whole album is good.
Solid album that suffers from following The Soft Bulletin and not meeting those highs but still great.
The Flaming Lips are better live than records. But still an attractive, full album- it just misses the 5 star mark for me.
Fun album, had only heard the Yoshima song before. I liked the mellow sound, most of the songs didn't stand out to me though. Favorite songs were: 1. Fight Test 3. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 7/10
Vibes.
Honestly, way better than expected. I didn't add many songs but the overall experience of the album was enjoyable. 7.5/10
Pretty good. Reminds me of newer MGMT stuff on some of the tracks. I liked about half and the other half was just ok.
More trip hoppy than expected
