Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Older Foo Fighters is not what I'm used to. Definitely grittier and grungy. Pretty decent

Sometimes this felt like the 4th Nirvana album which makes alot of sense given that it's Dave Grohl in 1995. Not a huge fan of FF, but this album was pretty good. I may have to visit some of their other stuff.

This is 'OK'. It didn't grab me on first listen. Didn't offend me either. It might grow on me... bit 'porridge made with salt and water'; OK but you really want to add some taste. Oh yeah, 'bland', that's the word. 3/5.

Pretty good first album, nothing too special on this album.

Does what it sets out to do, but not in a particularly exciting way - this has none of the magic of Nirvana. I like it well enough, but can't see myself seeking it out.

Damn he did that alone

First two songs were really good. Then all the songs started to sound the same. But I did enjoy this album. Downloading it!

I support this band being in the list, but this album... I think The Colour And The Shape; There Is Nothing Left To Lose or One By One lay more claim to these titles imo. Not to say this is a bad album but it doesn't capture the spirit of what was to come.

Nothing negative to say about this but also kinda forgettable

Aika voimallinen! Grunge kuuluu, vaikka 2000-lukua lähestytään. B-puolella jopa Nirvana (no shit).

I’ve heard this one before. Better than I expected but my expectations were low. Wouldn’t say many songs stuck out to me but it was an okay listen overall. Not my favorite from them.

Decent Album

Goodish.

Good in parts. Could be better if Kurt sang it

I really didn’t like Foo Fighters when this came out. But I have grown to appreciate Dave Grohl over the years. In the “drummer from band goes on to solo career” I’d rank him above dingo, Collins and Henley

Meh- it's ok for what it is. It does what it says on the tin.

Great record written and recorded by one single guy who was known as a drummer. You like him or not, this is quite an achievement.

This album takes me back.

Underrateds: -Good Grief -For All The Cows

Songs like This is a call and Big me are great power pop tunes. Bit like Nirvana, but without the angst. These first few Foo fighters albums had the relaxed and innocent atmosphere of just enjoying making music, before Foo fighters turned into stadium machine. I quite like this album, although it gets bit monotonic towards the end

Some songs more pop than I assumed. As positive/neutral comment would be that somehow lukewarm album.

Just don’t get them. Average at best

Foo Fighters, cool! But very mediocre first album. Their sound is good but not a great mix and meh songs.

Good album, there are quite a few better Foo fighter albums tho

Wish I paid a little more attention when listening. Just feels like classic foo fighters stuff which is very good at bringing the hype! I would rate this higher than all 3 star ones but lower than 4 star ones

I like it overall. Foo Fighters are not my favorite band to listen to - I don't know why. They just always felt soft to me. Even on this album, when they are objectively not being soft. I think it's stems from my prenotion of industry favoritism because of nirvana's. It is a really solid rock album though. More intense than some of foo fighters other stuff which I enjoyed.

Fair play to the man for doing this all alone, for fun, post-Nirvana. Some saves too: This Is a Call Good Grief Exhausted

Early Foo is good goo. Faves: - I'll Stick Around - Good Grief - Floaty - Wattershed

Never listened to this album before but I can see that Foo Fighters have basically always been the same since inception. It's a guitar and Dave Grohl repeating the same line over and over. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My favourite song was "Big Me" which sounds very Beatles inspired to my ears.

Very heavy sounding album. Love the riffs and drumming from Grohl. Some good melodies also. Can definitely hear his influence from Kurt Cobain

Cool I guess

It's okay, you can listen to it sometimes when you want something more energetic. 6.5 out of 10.

Cool post grunge crunchiness, a couple tracks are nice but overall a bit tiresome.

This album felt like a large wave of noise, with just 1 song to allow for breathing room. Sounded decent overall.

Could take or leave the Foos, I like some stuff but I'm not really into them as such. This wasn't too bad as first albums go and it was cool to learn that Dave did this all by himself. Some decent songs but not life-changing

Definite the start of something great.....but a little thin on this one.

Generic 90s rock band music

The best FF album.

This is probably the best of their albums, probably because of the proximity to their time in Nirvana. I hate that somehow Dave Grohl is the face of rock and roll now; all FF music sounds more or less the same to me.

It's good, but I'm trying really hard to find something specific to cling onto. The Foo Fighters debut is that prototypical alt rock album everyone would go on to copy in the 00s. ⭐⭐⭐

It’s good but I also found it a bit samey after a while

Good for a debut but not their best album. Fairly raw and distant feel compared with their later works.

I mean no denying this was a strong debut. Some solid fun tracks. And cool that Grohl had this so ready to go after Niravana. But to consider this one the greatest albums of all time is pretty odd to me

There is a Chuck Klosterman quote about the first Van Halen album being the perfect average rock record - anything worse than it is bad, anything better is good. Foo Fighters are the embodiment of the Hagar-era of that metric.

Enjoyed this one more than I expected to, and it turns out I already knew most of the songs. Dave Grohl clearly picked up a lot of songwriting cues from Kurt Cobain — "Alone + Easy Target" sounds like a Nirvana B-side. His talent at marrying loud, distorted guitars with catchy melodies recalls his former band, Husker Du and Weezer's Green Album. And the riffing on "Weenie Beanie" (what is it with these song titles tho) foreshadows his later collaboration with Queens of the Stone Age. But as the song titles suggest, it's probably best not to focus on the lyrical content.

This was fine, but nothing that wowed me. Not sure why this is on the list.

From one huge debut (The Cars) to another...both with gigantic hits as their first three tracks. The big difference is the format era...The Cars being released at the height of vinyl, and this one at the height of CDs. I think the Cars win out here being forced to whittle down their output to a nice-sized 9 tracks, while the Foo Fighters had the need to fill up much more of a 80 minute CD. As such, this albums starts out great but tires soon after and I had to struggle a bit to get through all 12 tracks. To be fair, part of that is likely just due to the amount of times I heard this all through the latter half of the 90s. Maybe this is one of those albums that I just got burnt out on. All that said, no doubt this is an iconic and important album of the era. Signaling that transition from 100% grunge into a more pop-song direction.

Not bad. Heard enough of it on the radio at the time of release, don’t think I need to go back and listen. Cheers though.

i enjoyed myself throughout the runtime and didn't get bored. sometimes, that's high enough praise.

Goed rock album, maar niks bijzonders

Solid but not overwhelmingly groundbreaking, enjoyed it. Good Grief was maybe my favorite on here

alright

A band I like but do not love and this is one of their most mediocre efforts. Plodding and samey. All at one level. 2.something if I had the choice.

Any single track was an enjoyable, if formulaic, rock track but altogether the album became an amorphous chain of "rock noise". Quite enjoyable but nothing special. Floaty was a highlight in that it had more variable rhythm and vocals. It struck me during the guitar solo in Oh, George that there were very few instrumental breaks or guitar solos in the album, further adding to the feeling of simplicity. Not a bad album but lacking depth in my view.

Dave fought the foos!! This is so cool !! Very awesome to hear that this is a solo album, super duper cool omg. Raw tracks with some that sound a little shoegazey

For a grunge band, they are precisely what Nirvana isn't but in the best way. This authentic rock sound for their opening album is neat.

This is not the best Foo Fighters' album. And cannot really be considered a true Foo Fighters album, either. Following the end of the Nirvana era, Dave Grohl embarked on a new chapter with an album he entirely recorded on his own. Stripping away most grunge elements, Grohl delves into a more pop-influenced approach ("Big Me"), along with predominantly alternative hard rock songs. This album is a billboard announcing the need move on from the sadness of Kurt Cobain's death. The opening track, "This is a Call", is an honest greeting of gratitude to the people and experiences that have shaped his life. The rest of the album is a fairly autobiographical and intimate and personal journal of the rediscovery for his passion for music, from the self-empowering "I'll Stick Around", to dealing with public perceptions and managing the absurd moments of life in "For All The Cows", to the guttural expression of anger and frustration found in "Weenie Beenie." This album highlights Grohl's ability to craft engaging songs and lays the groundwork for the more dynamic follow-up album, "The Colour and the Shape, " - an evolution likely due to Grohl's increased confidence and also engaging in the collaborative process with a full band. TLDR: The Foo Fighters' debut album is a solid entertaining effort featuring several outstanding tracks. However, as a complete work, it lacks much of the greatness of future albums.

This surprised me for a Fooeys album - it’s more raw and more grunge and to be honest, more like nirvana than the shiny stuff that came later. A bit repetitive though and nothing reached out and grabbed me in the way that grunge can when done well.

1 This Is a Call - decent 6 2 I'll Stick Around - lite 6 3 Big Me - lite 7 4 Alone + Easy Target - decent 6 5 Good Grief - decent 7 6 Floaty - decent 6 7 Weenie Beenie - decent 6 8 Oh, George - lite 6 9 For All the Cows - lite 6 10 X-Static - strong 6 11 Wattershed - decent 6 12 Exhausted - decent 6 Favourite 3 Tracks - 1. Good Grief 2. Big Me 3. X-Static - NOTE RATINGS ARE FROM A FIRST LISTEN - SCORE - 6.2/10

This is actually kinda embarrassing, I had no idea that the Foo Fighters had a self titled debut album. For some reason I genuinely thought the colour and the shape was their debut album. So I was excited to learn there was FF music I hadn’t heard yet. But like all wildly successful radio rock bands, I actually was already familiar with a few songs on the album. “Big me” is an all time classic rock song. I love that track as well as floaty and watershed. However I thought as a whole the album was underwhelming. It definitely peaked 3 songs into the album and only just recovered with 2 more songs of note. They do sound like they are trying to discover themselves which is fascinating to listen to, and they definitely have a strong garage rock sound on this album. My biggest complaint is there wasn’t enough variety on the album, which made some of the songs forgettable. But I still think, despite this not being one of FF best albums, that this is a solid modern rock album.

OK, not great. some tracks a bit jarring compared to others. 3/5.

The Foo Fighters have come a long way since this album, and the decision to include this but not The Color And The Shape is yet another example of how sloppy this list actually is. This album is very rough around the edges, which makes sense. It was all recorded in only a few days all by Dave Grohl himself. But it's still really solid, showing a lot of potential that would soon be met in future albums.

It’s cool, they rock. Not great

Not bad.

This is ok in a mildly boring sub-Nirvana sort of way, nothing to dislike but doesn’t really stand out for me either.

All in all not bad, but not great either. Impressive that he did this by himself though.

never incompetent, but never particularly interesting either.

Not the biggest fan of this album honestly, much preferred the color and the shape. had some good moments but largely fell flat.

great album but I can't give everything 4-5 stars

Good music

Started with the hits, got sorta generic the longer it went on.

Fav tracks: Big Me; Good Grief (except the "Hate it" parts).

Pretty good, pretty good. I don't like it enough to own a hard copy of it but it's more interesting than I remember. Best solo album by a drummer since Ringo's 'Beaucoups of Blues'.

Very 90s, it was a good time I liked a few tracks but for some reason it didn’t click with me as much as I wanted it too. Some songs went a little too long and the lyrics were a tad too repetitive and those little nitpicks I had added up for me. Favorite Tracks: This Is A Call, I’ll Stick Around, Wattershed.

I like how 90's grunge this sounds, it even has some shoegaze vibes which I was not expecting. I don't mind the production either, it has some similarities to Hüsker Dü and Pixies. I wish the angry parts were sung even more angrily though, lol.

Solid debut album. Nothing particularly stands out here but that’s not a bad thing

Only three stars because it’s not my favorite Foo but Dave Grohl’s musicianship cannot be denied

Not as bad as I expected.

Never really got into Foo Fighters and it always seemed to me as this kind of generic, radio-friendly rock music. Listening to it I realized that in fact it is exactly what I thought but it's still pretty enjoyable! I added a few tracks to my favorites. My rating is raised by the excellent drumming (duh!) and the back story - the album being recorded by Dave on his own as a sort of catharsis after Kurt's passing.

Pretty lackluster in my opinion, a really redundant sound that while a lot heavier and grungier than what they'd eventually morph into later down the line, just doesn't provide the stimulation I needed to enjoy this

Pretty good, but I always considered them gunge light

A very cool album, with a song I really like (Big Me), but I can't grade it with more than 3 stars. I like it, but I don't love it.

I appreciate that there are some unique sounds and chord progressions here, but DG manages to take those assets and make them sound as generic as possible.

A solid mid 90s formation for a new act for a new era.

I’ve always found FF to be a bit generic for lack of better word, but there is catharsis here for Dave Grohl in getting out of the shadow of Nirvana. This album overstayed its welcome a tiny bit for me with a lack of diversity in songwriting. However, I believe that this is another case of fatigue due to Dave’s outsized influence on what would later be considered generic, radio friendly accessible songwriting. While this may not be a master work, it showcases a talented musician who changed the face of mainstream rock in the 90s and 00s. The album is solid with some standout cutting edge radio rock tracks. Rating: 3.25

I actually don’t think I’ve ever listened to foo fighters. This was more 90s grunge than I expected even though I shouldn’t have been surprised based on the time and artist. A decent listen but nothing really grabbed me. Heavy 3.

Amy and I saw Foo Fighters do a july 4th concert in 2015. It was an awesome 2.5 hours of pure rock and roll. The idea that is started with a depressed Dave Grohl making songs alone in his room is pretty amazing. This is not the album I'd use as their entry to the list since none of the other band members are involved but it hinted at what he'd accomplish later on.

Too soon after Nevermind. Put the album quality in context and allowed my to justify my long held view that the Foo Fighters simply aren’t that good. Was torn between a two and a three but felt it deserved the extra star for the opening track.

I like Foo Fighters but this one is pretty forgettable

No me seduce

Dave Grohl is a very talented musician, but overall, I am not really a fan of the Foo Fighters. I was never much of a fan of Nirvana or the grunge scene. It's okay.

Good memories of this album when it came out but doesn't hold up to its peers or some of their later work. My personal favorite of theirs is the second album. I do still enjoy "Big Me" and "Exhausted".

Il n'y a pas de "Lithium", de "Come As You Are".

It’s okay. Nothing spectacular, just an average rock album. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Wasn't too gone on this one. A lot of samey tracks, and shouting which was annoying over time. Exhausted is a good track. Foo Fighters improved enormously for the Colour and the Shape

I'm impressed that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded this thing by himself, but I don't know that I'd ever pull this one up to listen to it again.

It's quite nice to receive this album just a few days after Unplugged in New York. It's amazing how quickly the world moves; in 1994 Dave Grohl is softly drumming along to About a Girl, while in 1995 he's playing every instrument on 'Foo Fighters' and ushering in a new Post-Grunge age. So yes, this album is seminal, marking a turning point in rock history. But it's also not *that* great to my ears now. I just feel it doesn't have enough great memorable songs to give this a super high star rating. I also feel that the rushed production really shows. These songs sound muddy and blurred, and the vocals are low in the mix making them inaudible in places. Compare this with The Color and the Shape, released just two years later. It's like Dave Grohl (and his production budget) suddenly grew into his new role as rock frontman; on the latter album his vocals are clear, loud, front and centre. It's a shame none of the later Foo Fighters albums are included in this list as some of those might well be 5*. There's a superb little video of Dave on YouTube (search for oojzmjJ3ugE) where he describes his songwriting techniques to Kyle Gass, with nuggets like "think about [your song] like it's a bumper sticker" and "don't bore us, get to the chorus!". The video is from 2009, and on reflection I feel his songwriting abilities were something Dave really honed between his first two albums. Best tracks This is a Call Big Me Wattershed

Freshman effort. Still getting out of Cobain’s shadow.

Not the best Foo Fighters album, but a decent one.

Some catchy tunes, but I would have put The Colour And The Shape on the list instead.

Bra album, men inte deras bästa

More interesting to me as a historical alt/pop rock artifact than an album as a whole. I liked the poppier songs more than the hard rock ones.

I was sick as a dog the day this album was given to me, so it's possible that it never got a chance to truly shine the way it maybe could have. That being said, after listening to it I still feel like there are other Foo albums I like more and that this is more of a "pick and choose songs" album instead of a "front to back listening" album. I still enjoyed it but the songs began to feel a bit same-y and didn't give me all I was hoping for.

Disappointing really. Starts off with a tune but then it's a long set of tonally similar songs. All great energy, but not really that engaging.

It's good. I like it. I enjoy the Foo Fighters and put them on when I just want to listen to rock without much more thought of what kind. This album and the story are incredible misically, the sound and rawness are on point, and it's a great kick off to what F.F. would grow into. But it's not rock out loud incredible for me like other albums and bands.

It’s fine very 90s

Impressive knowing that Grohl did most of this solo but a little too raw for me - still great vibes tho

nothing great

I've always thought I should like Foo Fighters more. They release good singles, they're a great live band and Dave Grohl is a legend, but I've never been tempted to dive into their albums. This isn't the album to change my mind. Sure it's really impressive that it was recorded in 6 days by the guy everyone thought was "just" the drummer from Nirvana, but ultimately it's a pretty mediocre grunge/rock album without any particularly memorable songs.

I didn't like it even though I wanted to

I have always found the Foo Fighters to be a bit generic. That said I really enjoyed reading about this album and its creation and lyrics. I had no idea that Grohl played all the instruments. I wish I had discovered this before listening to it and it has almost inspired me to give it a second listen. Almost.

It's pretty impressive what Grohl put together after a rough few years leading up to the release of this album. Loosing a band member (and frontman in particular) in such a tragic way would have been life altering, creating this album almost entirely on his own out of that time is pretty incredible - writing the whole thing and performing/recording every instrument is epic! The music would be 80% better if there was 30% less cymbals - its the main thing that puts me off the music. Foo Fighters have been on reasonably high rotation in my household as one of my husbands fave bands, but they don't really do it for me. This isn't the best of the Foo Fighters, but its an important and interesting addition to the list in terms of rock history and legacy. Fave Track: For all the cows FRESH POTSSSS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhdCslFcKFU

Solid listen. Some of the songs kinda blended together in my mind.

It's fun but overall decent

grunge/rock from the ashes of Nirvana

Like Nirvana but doesn't pack the same punch. Sounds fine. High 3.

6/10 - I liked some of the songs. It sounded like rock most of the time and I have heard big me before. It became to far out there for me when we reached some of the later songs.

Intense listening

kept me bopping along but also didn't really grab me

A great EP followed by a bunch of 90s detritus. Above average detritus but not not really vital listening. But out of the gate the first three songs pretty much give you the three dynamics FF will cover for the next 15 years (beyond that they have drifted further afield -though no too far). Always great to hear Dave behind the kit - and his performance everywhere else is certainly competent to impressive but to what end. But Dave certainly announced his intentions.

A decent enough debut. Plenty to build on for futre albums.

Not my style

Apart from the (great) drumming, the Foo Fighters' sound on this album is pretty anonymous, particularly for the already-oversaturated field of 90s alt-rock/grunge. Grohl continues faithfully in the footsteps of his previous band Nirvana, to fair effect – although the juxtaposition (for some listeners) between Cobain's roughened, emotional vocal and the weaker, blurrier one in this album can be stark. Grohl definitely made the right decision by distancing his Nirvana identity from the new music he wanted to spread and perform with the "New Foo". And maybe that separation of identity worked wonders back in the 90s, but with more hindsight information, I doubt it fools many people in the present day. Every track is pretty enjoyable, pretty energetic, with instruments that are pretty well performed – but not much more. The relatively mellow pop track Big Me is a highlight for having a warmer guitar sound and a generally more singable melody. The album opener, This Is a Call, is iconic enough as a full-fledged introduction to justify its place in my "key tracks" list as well. Most of the remaining tracks are inoffensive, perfectly fine tracks in a genre that had been (and still is) done to death. The Foo Fighters don't do much to distinguish themselves as artists, and combined with the lack of album flow (aside from the contrasting tone in Big Me and For All the Cows), I can't justify giving this any higher than a 3. 3/5 Key tracks: This Is a Call, Big Me, For All the Cows

Solid album cool grungy sound

A pretty ok debut album. Very impressive that Dave pretty much did it all but there is better albums over the horizon…

Sorry I didn’t love this more, Dad!

Started out great and then faded in the second half. Cool that Dave played all the instruments, though. A decent debut.

For me there is nothing really stand out. Lyrics are decent but i lost interest with the similar sounding vibe throughout. The next Foo Fighters album is the good one, but I get it mourning the death of Kurt etc. But taking all that aside and just as a body of music it's ok... and that's about it

In the wake of Cobain's death, Nirvana and the world were reeling. I did not know the full back story for this debut from the Foo but the fact that Grohl recorded this solo soon after is quite an achievement for a drummer. He is a multi talented musician and although this is not his strongest work I commend this effort. Take it for what it is and for a quick recording project, passed around amongst friends on cassette, gives is more meaning and def kicked off DG as his own force to be reckoned with. "Big Me" top track. Despite recent media negativity for some poor relationship choices, Dave is a good dude and I give this album gets a 2.8.

one of the okayest albums of the 90s

It's been a while, but this is a pretty good album. Don't love it, but nothing bad on here either. It was nice to give a close listen to after so long.

6/12/24 Not a fan of the Foos. I think they are bang average as is this album.

This is good as debut albums go, though it's probably my least favorite of the 90s/00s Foo Fighters albums.

Initially finding the vocals getting lost in the production, however settled in and enjoyed the sound

Much more fun that In Utero - no surprises there, with the benefit of hindsight.

I've always felt that I should like Foo Fighters but their music too often feels a bit too safe to me and lacking in a bit of personality. I quite like a few tracks here and whilst most the rest are decent enough, I just don't have much desire to listen to them again. Unsurprisingly, I gravitated more towards the heavy and chaotic stuff on this, like Weenie Beenie, which is class There is something quite charming about this being recorded nearly solely by Dave Grohl though. I appreciate Dave a lot, but more for the work he's done with other bands (QOTSA especially), so I feel like I'm missing out Highlights: Weenie Beenie, Wattershed, Good Grief

This was a slow burn more than I realized.

Album che va scemando

Enjoyable American garage grunge punk rock. Not mind-blowing but very listenable, and I feel it's not taking itself too seriously, which I appreciate after dozens of self-important albums.

Not bad, but not nearly their best. Kinda forgettable honestly. They get better though.

I’d never previously listened to this through. Can hear so much of their later stuff in this. Good listen but not one I’d rush back to so 3/5

HA! Heard it already! Nerds.

An alright album, no real standout songs.

Enjoyable but nothing really stood out

fun! not super crazy, but i liked the vocals

It's pretty much thirty years since I first heard this album. I thought it was ok then, and I think it's ok now.

I mean yeah, it's mid, it's the Foo Fighters, what did you expect?

This is so old. This is Foo Fighters' earliest album. I'm more familiar with their work almost a decade later. But you can hear their core characteristics.

Yup, it's the Foo Fighters. Exactly what I expected, no surprises.

Sounds like them

Good listen

was incredibly bored for the entire first half, but enjoyed a few songs in the second half. i've always thought ff were overrated and this album did not change that perception

OK album, the hits are catchy, the rest is so so. score in 1997: 3 stars score in 2024: 3 stars

Solid rock album, but not very exciting. Nirvana light.

Not bad, less polished than their later stuff (not in a bad way, I actually liked that). I liked a couple songs but I’m just not a big FF fan

Nirvana lite

“It was really just an experiment,” said Dave Grohl. Well that worked out pretty well for him. I kind of like All for the Cows, even if the lyrics are basically surreal nonsense.

Good debut by basically grohl alone. Definitely not the best foo record.

This is like the best "average music" ever recorded. It's like a 6/10 but the 6 is extra shiny. Does that make sense? Worthy inclusion on the backstory alone, but I don't think there's many people who'd consider this to be their favorite Foo Fighters album. Three outta five!

A straight forward rock album. Some good stuff on here, some just okay. Weenie Beenie is a standout for me.

The Album was great but sort of repetitive. It felt like there was quite a bit of repetition when it came to how the songs were laid out with few differentiations between each one. Some of my favorites from the album were For All the Crows, Oh George, and This Is a Call. I’d give it a 6/10. It’s a good album to listen to but didn’t wow me like Nirvana or other old grunge bands.

Not the best

Middling. Not any standout tracks, partly because they all sound the same. Will I listen to it again? No.

Sounds like a passable "next" Nirvana album. Does veer into a kinda grunge-pop vibe in places. I liked it but not anything that's going to stick. 3 stars

Interesting to hear Foo Fighters at their start. You can hear the remnants of grunge from the Nirvana days before they became dad rock

#53 Good rock. Weenie beenie was a bit much for my taste.

my mom love them, idk they're kind of whatever. not bad though

The production is a little all over the place. I liked two songs very much but nothing close to Nirvana on this one

Album opens very strong, kind of loses steam as it goes on. Solid grunge/alt rock album.

Grungy debut from foo, loved Big Me a lot and for all the cows too. it feels a bit too similar to what nirvana and other acts were doing. Props to their endurance and presence, but I think it's just the start for them.

General impression: Rocks, but unmemorably Detailed review: This is an enjoyable listen. I’ve always been charmed by Foo Fighters. Dude loves to rock hard but knows how to keep it in the catchy, pop-oriented space better than most rockers. It’s hard not to enjoy the riffs, the drum beats, and the scrappy production all over this album. The problem is that none of the songs really stick in the mind. It’s a little bit faceless because of that. Still, it sounds great and makes me wanna head-bang. Deeper thoughts (context): Are there other Foo albums on this list? I’m mainly confused why this came up before some of the more popular albums with their real hits. We’ll see. I’d personally pick two or three other Foo albums before this one. Score: 3.2 (3 for this list) Number of albums left to review: 974 Number of albums from the list I’d consider “must-listens”: 15 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 12 (including this one)

I sometimes wish I liked the Foo Fighters more than I do. Dave Grohl is a talented musician, and I have enjoyed listening to him talk about music because of his passion for the art. But the band just has never done much to move me.

It's fine. I've always wanted to like Foo Fighters more, just because of the Nirvana lineage, I suppose. But it's just OK. My official policy on Dave Grohl is that I like him best behind the drums. 3.5*

Mwah.

Debut record, not really groundbreaking

Great record with a really fun vibe. Plenty of hits from this one that have stood the test of time and take me back to my younger days. Dave has such a distinct voice that carries over these upbeat tunes and emphatic instrumentation to really captivate the listener's ear. This is a really enjoyable one.

i feel like we had a strong start and it just fell apart. it was so sludgy and samey. are there any other foo fighters albums on the list or was this the best we could come up with?

well i wanted to like this, but it was kind of a big old nothingburger. I've never been a huge fan of the foo fighters because their songs always seemed to blend together for me. they're the cosmic latte of rock music, just the average of every popular band's sonic output blended together until smooth. this is a call and I'll stick around are pretty good. big me was kind of novel, if only because it was a song by them that's under three and a half minutes long and at a more relaxed tempo. i had no idea that song was huge (111M streams on spotify) and I'm not sure it has any right to be. must've been in a TV show or car commercial or something... i only know i'll stick around from the weird al polka it's in. that's just how it's gonna be here. favorites: this is a call, I'll stick around, big me

Mid-ish, not my type of music, but I see the quality within.

6/10. Had some good songs (3 made the playlist) but most of the album was pretty “meh”

Not my cup of tea. Everything sounded the same.

eh. pretty average rock. not horrible and i would listen again, but i wouldn't put it on this list

Good in places

A great first release from Dave. I feel like lyrically we are still a bit cryptic and we are still afraid to bear our soul, but musically we are hearing a lot of what becomes a staple sound from the FF. standouts with Big Me, This is a Call, I’ll stick around, floaty, and Good Grief.

Dave is gonna sound like Dave!

Good but not life-changing. But at least by then the band wasn't as obnoxious as it would become later from the third album onwards.

Great debut album but not better than the colour and the shape. 3.5/5 1. This is a call 2. Floaty 3. Good grief

decent but kinda same sounding throughout; favs are big me, wattershed, and exhausted;

Really like big me. Chill rock music

I’ll Stick Around // Exhausted

Grunge is one of my favorite genres, but this album just failed to move me in any way

This album started off really good, I do like the sort of 50s/60s drumming combined with more grunge stuff. However the back half was just meh

I kind of like it. It's a big hard and a bit fun!

It was good but I wasnt drawn to it.

Quality debut album from the Foos. 3.5 stars

it was ok

I like some, but not all of this.

Not my favorite foo album but definitely not the worst!

Not bad for Dave's first solo album. I like how he recorded this himself. They still have better albums to come.

It’s not bad at all, but always a bit too safe. A bit of the Nirvana “DNA” is noticeable in tracks like “Alone + Easy Target” if that’s what you’re hoping for, but overall it’s just pumpkin spice for white guys.

189/1001

Cool to listen to their root sound, so many changes through the years

Not my favorite foo fighters album but still good music

I could be biased as this was one of the albums of my young adulthood. I've not listened to this in a while, and it's a nice to have a revisit. Oftentimes, music of old doesn't quite live up to the nostalgia we have for it. That does apply to some extent here - after all, a lot of music has come and gone in 30 years. In places, it feels a little tired and 'small-towny'. And then you get a track like 5, Good Grief... and good grief, what a thumping tune. 7, Weenie Beenie, whilst it wasn't on the Road Rash (PS1) soundtrack, it takes me straight back there. 9, For All The Cows... gosh, not heard this in forever. I used to *love* this, with its jazzy chords. Slow rock track X-Static (10), with gentle vocals floating above the heavy guitar and drums, has a very different feel to the next track, Wattershed - energetic, shouty, punky... I never really thought of Foo Fighters as having this range. Or maybe they were just finding their feet / their sound...?

Apparently not really my thing? Felt like a totally forgettable album.

I was expecting to enjoying this more than I did. Some great songs and for a debut it’s a banger but it didn’t make me reach for the volume dial once.

Absolutely fine, probably wouldn’t listen again, but I was so at ease I accidentally listened twice!!

Foo Fighters are never terrible, never outstanding, just fine. Every album has one or two catchy songs and the rest is okay.

6/10. Good! Didn't know what to expect and was surprised in a good way. Some great songs, some were a bit boring to me. I can enjoy good guitar in music but this is definitely for people who love guitar solos and prioritise the ability of them playing the music... if that makes sense? So it's good but not for me. My favourite songs were This Is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Floaty, Weenie Beenie (the best one) and X-Static.

Great album until u get to the last song 3 stars

The foo is coo

This Album had a nirvana vibe

very nirvana-esque and it makes sense since it was released the next year after cobain's death, i guess mr grohl didnt quite found his footing yet with foo fighters found someone using this template, found it fun Production: 13/20 -kinda raw but thats probably intentional Songwriting: 14/20 Innovation: 8/20 Bangers: 9/20 Emotional response: 10/20 -not big on nirvana and this is almost a lesser nirvana =54/100 -> 3/5

Some yes, some no.

unpopular opinion, foo fighters are kind of annoying. This album isn't doing much for me. I'm giving it a 3 stars

Don't know if I have ever listened to this one from start to finish. I believe every instrument on this one was done solely by Dave. Weenie Beenie was an interesting turn with an interesting track name. I thought the first half was pretty good with Big Me being a favorite of mine. The second half felt a little less inspired. This feels like a 3.5, but I'm going to round down because I'm sure I am biasedly enjoying it a bit more because I listed to FF a lot. Also rounding down because Dave went ahead an sired a child out of wedlock which is kinda fucked up dude.

Extremely raw Foo Fighters which was great to listen to because I have never listened to this album. I can see how a lot of these songs were building blocks to their monstrous commercial success. Didn't think I knew any songs on here but Big Me was definitely familiar. Not the best album in a musical vacuum but still extremely important as Foo Fighters first album.

this is just.... fine lol all the songs blend into one another and they sound like every other foo fighters song, with some exceptions that have a bit more grit but even those end up sounding like Nirvana knock-offs

This is a pretty weak album from a band I generally like. I think if the follow up albums hadn’t been very strong, then Foo Fighters would have been forgotten. This is a Call could have been a Stone Temple Pilots b-side. I’ll Stick Around could have been a Nirvana b-side. Big Me is the first song that feels like an original voice.

Just some good ole fashioned 90s alt/grunge rock. I don't think it's particularly special (other than Grohl doing this all by himself), but it's still very good, and there's no drop off in quality throughout the whole album. Just some quintessential 90s rock. Favorite Song(s): X-Static, Floaty

this is a call- 3 or 4 ill stick around- 4 big me- 4 alone + easy target- 4 good grief- 2 or 3. real sonic adventure menu screen floaty- 4 weenie beenie- 4 or 5 oh george- 3 or 4 for all the cows- 4 or 5 x static- 4 watershed- 3 exhausted- 3 or 4 its just not very good is it

Good band but not my favorite.

If this fairly rough album can launch a band into super stardom, you too can achieve anything!

Sure! I listened to Foo Fighters' self-titled debut album from 1995 as part of my 1001 albums challenge. I found it okay and appreciated its Nirvana-like tones, but I felt it was more suitable as background music and didn’t fully engage me. My favorite track was "Beanie Weenie." I also noted that the album lacked Nirvana’s characteristic quirkiness and weirdness, even though it had some similarities.

Never understood the love for this band, as opposed to other guys like Nickelback for example. Sounds like the most generic "grunge" music you could come up with.

Not bad for a self made album. Probably one of the most bland rock band ever, but their first two albums are listenable.

This album might be important in a historical point of view, as it's the first move Dave Grohl did after Nirvana, and it's a pretty wild move, but... The album is also not that good and he was going to do much better with the second Foo Fighters. It's a 2.5 to me, but let's give it a 3, has we know the man was going the blow our mind later.

smoll 3

# 311 ; They've done a pretty decent job, good album, I like the hits of course, Just kinda sounds like rock music, nothing too innovative or special and I wouldn't spend my hard earned on this, but I'd listen to someone else's copy again ;-) Favourite Track : This Is A Call

Good listen but nothing wowed me.

Litt kjedelig

This Is a Call I'll Stick Around Big Me Exhausted

A good album but does not strike me as that much of a progression from Nirvana and the general grunge soundscape.

okay obviously anythings gonna sound good after rhcp but this is also genuinely a nice record. weirdly low-key given the grunge and post grunge styles it sits at the crossroads of, for which id point to the strangely warm production...maybe not a lot of super standouts, but very comfy, esp when u hit the more layered and impressionist tracks for which the production takes on an almost shoegazey vibe. that being said i wasnt paying attention to the lyrics at all but apparently one of the songs is about courtney love....so fucking lame dude, feel like i gotta dock it a star just for that lmao

Fine, nothing more nothing less

3/5. It's a fun rock album full of songs that are good to throw on whenever but not much more than that. It's still highly impressive that it is all Dave Grohl: all instruments, vocals, lyrics. With that in mind, each song is pretty elevated. As an album as a whole, I don't think it stands out but was still a good listen. Best Song: Big Me, This Is A Call, Exhausted

A solid enough fun little side project from the drummer of Nirvana, hope it works out for him

Made in 6 days by Dave Grohl shortly after Nirvanna breaks up

This just OK for me, I only recognized 1 or 2 songs off this album and I didn't enjoy it as much as Nevermind from Nirvana but there were a few memorable tracks like Big Me and Exhausted. I probably won't revisit this either, but I read that Dave Grohl recorded a demo of this album all by himself after Cobain's death, so that was really impressive.

Loved the drums. Loved the singles. The rest was good, solid, straight-ahead hard rock. Solid album.

Nice to see some Foo Fighters representation on this list, although I think their best work came in the albums immediately following this one. It's weird, but I've noticed that the author(s) of this list seem to have a bias for artist's earlier work, almost looking past an artist's overall body of work. Regardless, Foo Fighters are always a fun listen. This album in particular feels a bit top-heavy though. Hard to fault the Foo Fighters for that, considering that this album's production was practically a one-band band in the form of one Dave Grohl.

3.5 Starts really strongly but loses some steam in the latter half. Still, this is just big, loud, fun rock music. Been a great week for this project thus far!

Solid but that's about it. I never found the band too interesting.

Crisp and kinetic grunge-pop (editors are savvy with that phrase), with quality hooks and a bright hard edge, but also straightforward to the point of mundanity. Best cuts: "This Is a Call" and "Big Me" and "Floaty" and "Exhausted," which offer some sweetness or uncertainty or melancholy or something more than the much less interesing, blunt-instrument bangers (e.g., the very dumb "Weenie Beenie" and tedious "Watershed"). One rounds down because loud-quiet-loud could not be more passe by now, no? And anyway one has always found Grohl/FFs to be rather steadily and significantly overrated (though perhaps one's anti-Nirvana bent shades one's reaction somewhat unfairly). Again, this is fine, perfectly okay, but nowhere near transcendent .

Lekkere plaat voor een autorit

Their first album, while important, isn't necessarily their best. It's still decent though.

This is the Foo Fighters debut album. I'll start off by saying that I liked but didn't love the album overall. That said, it's pretty impressive when you know the context. Dave Grohl created and recorded this pretty much fully on his own, he recorded it only 6 months after Kurt Cobain's death, and it was basically just a cathartic project that he expected no one to listen to ("Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it's the stupidest fucking band name in the world"). There were rumors he was going to join Pearl Jam and Tom Petty wanted him to be his drummer, but he did this instead. "I was supposed to just join another band and be a drummer the rest of my life. I thought that I would rather do what no one expected me to do." It's really hard not to respect it, he must've been going through it and joining another band as a drummer would have been the easy thing for sure, but this decision (and this album) led to something huge. Anyway, back to the music. The first thing that stands out is that it's noticeably less "grungy" than Nirvana. It really feels like a transition from the grunge of the early '90s to more of an alt-rock sound that would close out the decade. At times the sound falls a bit flat to me (though in his defense, he was recording the whole thing himself), but there's a few places where the slightly more polished sound shines. "Big Me" is by far the best song on the album (it's great), and it's relatively low-key compared to the rest of the album. I doubt I'll find myself coming back to a ton here, but it's an enjoyable listen overall, and I really respect what he did on this one. I'm sure there's more Foo Fighters to come on this list, so it'll be interesting to see how the sound changes after this. Favorite song: Big Me Other: This Is A Call, I’ll Stick Around, Big Me, Alone + Easy Target, Floaty, Oh George, Exhausted 7/19/24

“just another rock band” so true foo fighters that is exactly what you are. i mistakenly started this list to expand my musical horizons but it’s such a staggering volume of just rock and/or roll. 🐄🐄🐄

Amazing first song followed by samey sounding songs

It’s a good sound, and a good debut. Not my favorite and definitely not the most interesting as he differentiated more from the Nirvana sound later, but it bridges the gap.

Some well written songs right after Nirvana, almost serving as a counter melody. But it begins a problem that Foo Fighters will always have: writing songs that are good singles but not a complete album.

Pretty good album but pales compared to their later stuff imo

It was a bit plain?

3 ok far from their best

I really like the hits on this one, but the others were just so mediocre, enough to drop my rating from a 4 to a 3. 3/5

Buttrock

Good album, never listened to it as a whole because I didn’t like this music when it first came out.

Just background music. This album didn’t engage me. I’d give it a 2 or 3. Maybe a 3 because it didn’t annoy me.

Good but not a love

#1: This is a call - classic foo fighters opener. Loud, in your face, repetitive. 29 years ago Dave Grohl decided on an identity, and that's what he's stuck with (and brought in people to fill out the roster who support it) #2: I'll Stick Around - samey. I dunno if its nostalgia or what but I enjoy this. #3: Big Me - I never knew this is what this song was called. Its classic. I love it. It really does bring me back to when I was 13/14 and crushing on the alt girl in class. #4: Alone + Easy Target - A miss for me, nothing particularly noteworthy about this song #5: Good Grief - Another miss, very samey, and perhaps 30 seconds too long #6: Floaty - something extremely comforting about this song. It started playing and I just started vibing, definitely one of my favourite songs thus far, perhaps only beaten out by Big Me. Sidenote - something that's been bugging me is that it seems like the songs have...something more to give? Like Dave is holding back his voice (or is reaching the limits of his vocal prowess), and as a result, the songs just sound...incomplete somehow. #7: Weenie Beenie - oooh a sign of what FF could have been. I kinda like it, its different. Perhaps not something I'd wanna listen to often, but nice to kinda pull out every now and again. #8: Oh, George - Another classic FF song. God damn he knew what the band's identity was going to be from the start #9: For All the Cows - Fun number that ends up being the appetiser to the main dish. #10: X-static - yep this is it. Helluva guitar riff going on, those drums, chef's kiss. #11: Wattershed - is aiight #12: Exhausted - Perfect name for the last song, epitome of what I'm feeling. Thankfully though, this is a great palate cleanser to end this album off with. Chill vibes that bring you down from the highs the prior songs have brought you to. Overall thoughts: As an album, probably not my favourite FF one. That being said, its so classically FF that I can't hate it, it being the prototype to what we now know and love about the FooFighters. Some highs, some low lows, but overall, above average. I'd give it 3/5, but I'll bump it up to 3.5/5 cos I love Dave Grohl, and FF are one of the best concerts I've ever been to in my life.

Liked it, except for Weenie Bernie and Watershed, where it's just a screaming mess.

Sang along to the first track and the rest of the album was ok. Giving it a 3 cos Dave Grohl seems like a nice bloke

Not sure why they picked this album over "The Colour and the Shape" (which contained Monkey Wrench, My Hero, and Everlong) as this one doesn't hold up terribly well to my ears. Kinda just sounds like noise rock to me. It's not bad, and it's cool that Dave Grohl apparently did the whole thing himself, but I'll never listen to it again. 2.9

pretty much predicted late 90s altrock/postgrunge, for better and worse. catchy. i kind of like the last few tracks for some reason

like a poppier version of Nirvana(of course), with some nice tunes, good guitar sounds.

Generous 3, there's a cracking EP here.

They could have chosen any other foo fighters album and it would've gotten a higher rating. It amazes me how much this already sounds like modern Foo Fighters albums though. You would think Grohl would still be searching for his sound on this album. But he already found it and never changed it.

Typical Foo Fighters (derogatory)

I like the Foo Fighters - they get a lot better than this.

As generic bullshitty as this, fact remains that these are catchy, well constructed, although cookie cutter, tracks. It's so unobjectional, it becomes offensive, but can't help but come back around

It's a pretty solid debut for Foo Fighters. I wasn't expecting much but for the most part I liked what I heard. It's a typical 90's rock album but it excels at what it does. The first half of it was where it had its highs then after Floaty it just dips in quality. Most of the songs on this album just blend in with each other which I guess isn't a bad thing. All in all for my first album listened to on this generator I liked it. Best - Floaty and Big Me Worst - Weenie Beenie and Wattershed 3.0-3.5/5

When I think generic rock this is what comes up.

First listen to this album. Could grow on me more with a few more listens. Highlights were Floaty and For all the cows. 3.5

This sounded exactly like I expected a Foo Fighters album to sound... but it was OKAY!

Started well with some well known songs, seemed to drop off by the end of the album. Overall not a bad album
