Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Very fun rock record, showing Dave Grohl step out of Kurt’s shadow less than a year after his death and come out with a sound that was his own. Earns its way to 4 stars as Dave Grohl being a one man band for the whole record. I still think some of their later stuff like The Colour and the Shape or Wasting Light has stronger songwriting, however.
Pure nostalgia trip into my introduction to rock.
This isn't my favorite Foo Fighters album or even their best (maybe second or third next to color and shape and nothing left to lose), but it's an awesome album that I really love.
One of the best debut albums ever
Amazing energy on every track. Hard to believe that Dave Grohl played each instrument himself!
Dave Grohl is a musical genius and all around good guy! I liked this album - very good rock n roll music. A few radio hits that are very familiar, and the rest get the job done, but not my go to music. 3.5 stars, but rounding up for the cool factor, and memories of the one Foo show I attended where they blew me away with one of the best live performances I’ve seen.
Man nobody makes modern rock sound as *correct* as Dave Grohl
Needs to be listened to loudly. Good stuff.
Best album I've gotten in a while
Nicht zu krachig, schon sehr 90er
Grunge. Bastante bueno.
Nice
Oh, early Foo! I remember picking this album up at Karma records on Indiana in 1995 when I visited IU as a high school senior. As a big Nirvana kid, I had read that Dave Grohl was spinning up a new band. He'd sung one Nirvana song that had surfaced at the time- Marigold. I didn't know what to expect, but when I spun that CD for the first time I knew it was good. They didn't really get a ton of love until their second album and this first one gets discarded at times in the great Foo pantheon, so I'm glad it made the cut. Props to Grohl for playing all the instruments on this (because the band didn't technically exist when he recorded).
awesome album. I remember loving the I fell in two music video when I was a kid
Love Foo Fighters. This isn't my favorite of their albums, but I enjoyed listening to it
Not bad! Was cool to hear the 1st album from them.
- Best tracks: This Is A Call Big Me
Some good tracks. Typical Foo Fighters
elements of rock and roll and hard rock. easy listen. 90s rock
Great 90’s grunge album!
Impressive when you hear about how Dave Grohl is behind the entire project.
Really don’t love this as much viewed through today’s lens. They’ve been making the same song for 25 years.
Räväkkää rokkia. Muistan kuinka eräs itsekin rumpuja ja kitaraa soittava nuori mies hypetti tätä levyä ja tuli hänen kanssaan jokunen sata kertaa kuunneltua läpi.
Classic rock sounds of the 90s.
I've mostly listened to the singles from this record before, glad I sat down and listened to it. Love the emo influences on here (wonder if there are any Jawbreaker records on this list?). Makes sense he would take some members of Sunny Day Real Estate for the next record. I enjoy the grittiness of this, especially seeing how polished the future records would become. Foos also put on a hell of a show. Favorite Tracks: "Good Grief", "Big Me", "For All the Cows"
I'm a massive Nirvana fan. This record is okay. Something was lost with Kurt that I don't expect Grohl to be able to replace. This isn't really the Foo Fighters as we know them today, it's just Dave Grohl playing all the parts, and for that reason it's a hell of a lot better than the saccharine arena rock they play in 2021. Just solid tunes with an occasionally raw aesthetic to them.
The idea of trudging forward in the face of tragedy was a new concept for Dave Grohl. Having been plunged to the darkest depths of the bottom, he had to figure out to cast a light and find a way back to the top. Fortunately for him, and for us listeners, he'd been preparing for some time. Foo Fighters, from cassette demo tape to wacky music videos and beyond, provided a path for Grohl to reach as the one man band turned into a full fledged outfit that would endure and endear to this day. Who would have thought that, after a most unfortunate start, that he'd stick around? Favorites: This is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Big Me, Alone + Easy Target, Good Grief, Floaty, For All the Cows, X-Static.
Surprisingly very good. Only listened once, so the ones that were more obviously melodic grabbed me more.
It’s competent rock, I’m gonna like it
Fine
Sounds like every other foo fighters songs. Not amazing, not disappointing. No interesting songs 6/10
It is impossible to love or hate the Foo Fighters as they are the platonic ideal of mid. They are of room temperature water. They are spaghetti without sauce. They are envoys of the endless void of nothingness that awaits us all.
Very much “rock” but well executed and diverse in compositions. Never really listened to Foo Fighters but this feels like an appropriate debut.
Not a bad album, some good tracks, though I've listened to this one a lot and revisiting it's just a little boring and monotonous sounding.
Solid 3!
- I like the Foo Fighters' sound, even if it is often about as inoffensive as post-grunge can get. But not much here stands out. My favorite is definitely "Big Me," mainly because it was such a departure from most of the other tracks. - Impressed that Dave Grohl essentially recorded this album by himself.
This didn't hit with me when it came out and it doesn't particularly hit with me now. It's still okay
In retrospective it feels so demolike compared to what was to come after. Practically is a Dave Grohl solo with a guest guitar on one of the tracks. Rises from the ashes of Nirvana, but it isnt quite as good.
not my favorite of this era. it's fine.
Seems paint-by-numbers now, but back then it was when "alternative" became "alt-rock" and the nineties hit their stride.
Monday, 29 June, 2026 It’s a good album. Some very good songs. Easy to listen to. Good exploration of the genre. Sets the stage for Dave Grohl’s push of the grunge genre into pop grunge. It gets extra points for being so focused on the death of a friend. Not quite to four stars, though.
Pleasant pop music from the pretty percussionist
3/5
Really solid debut, impressive how he plays all the instruments here and the pivot from the Nirvana sound
7/10
Nice rock and roll, but didn't really struck my nerve. 6/10
It’s alright, but most songs sound really similar
-drum heavy -not fully my style, but I like it -repetetive -listened while driving
Good stuff
*1995. *Big Me is the big hit here. *90s alt is my jam, but I'm just not a huge Foo fan. They're just meh for me. *This sounds like all their stuff to me - all their mellow stuff sounds the same and then all their uptempo stuff sounds the same to me. RATING - 6.5/10
This is kind of the perfect 3.5 for me, but closer to a 3. Catchy, good 90s alternative, but lacks the rawness of Nirvana or the really memorable hooks of Foo Fighters later stuff. Kind of baffling this one is on the list and not their followup, which was really their breakthrough
Like some Foo Fighter songs but all these were samey.
sexo
Overall pretty solid but blends into itself on the back half. Still really enjoyable rock 3.5
I didn't have a lot of expectations going into this album, but I was pleasantly surprised. I will say that the more punk-rock/metal-leaning songs didn't do much for me, but I definitely noticed a talent for writing, catchy melodies, even those that include interesting accidentals and harmony. On a similar note, I was also impressed by some of the chords used and harmonies constructed. I think this album would merit another listen for those reason reasons, which is enough to convince me to give it a light three
straightforward rock music. It doesn't interest me that much but at least it's well-executed and there are some good melodies
Rockin sound
The stuff you know - 5. The stuff you don’t - 1. Average to a 3.
Why this over color and the shape
Great energy and general sound. But the songwriting ist not there yet.
I like the Foo Fighters for like, two songs but then they just sound so similar. And this album lacks a bunch of the crowdpleasers from their later stuff. It's a fine album, but that's all for me. 3/5
Really enjoy the Foo Fighters, but this is not my favorite album of theirs.
the beginning of a great musical project
Fingernails are pretty, fingernails are good...a strong start to competing with ole Bob for the most nonsensical lyrics. At least the instrumentals and voice is far superior. Overall, I was excited to see this band/album pop up, but I was a bit disappointed. Maybe their later stuff was better and more distinct. There were some cool musical intros to songs or sections that I thought was going to really hit it, but I never really felt or got the payoff. Would not be unhappy to hear again, but wouldn't be excited.
Way too compressed to enjoy listening to the album. And that is too bad because I like the songs! Oh well.
I mean it's Foo Fighters. You knew I couldn't go lower than 3. But then I don't know if I'll ever find myself reaching 4 let alone 5 for them. They have great sound but I rarely feel like, inspired by their songs.
Good album. Very high energy. But it didn't really blow me away, either. I think Colour might have gotten a higher rating.
First 3 tracks are probably the highlight. A solid debut album from Dave Grohl.
Doesn't hold up
Alright
The Nirvana at home
It's all a bit too generic for me. Third star because of Dav Grohl, who I cannot possible dislike.
First album from the Foo Fighters! I didn't know Dave sang so good (or at least goes really well with this record). The album starts off strong and keeps that momentum for the next two songs. But the bigger picture is that it emulates a lot of the alt-rock/grunge sounds that were going on at the time, so not much stood out to me after the fact. What I did like was that compared to his time in Nirvana, this was more melody and hook-focused. Perhaps this debut is where the Foo Fighters gets its "foo"ting (3.5).
Thought I was going to hate this, surprisingly liked it a lot more than I thought. Whole point of this project prob. 3.5 more like.
For some reason I have never liked this band, but to be fair I have never heard an album. Surprisingly the tunes were catchy and Big Me was great.
Sympa mais sans plus
+big me +this is a call + exhausted Har lyst å like resten av låtene å men lite som setter seg.
Diet Nirvana. Mitt største problem med Foo Fighters e gitaristen Dave Grohl. Han spille så sykt kjedelig gitar. Selv i dag med tre gitarista. Helt ok rock. Big Me klart beste sang
Strong album.
Meh, this sounds like nirvana still... liked one song only
Its a bit uncool to like foos these days. However, arguably the first four songs are really good. Weenie beenie coulda been on in utero. Ill never forgive dave for blowing it with melissa auf der maur though so i can never respect him, the tosser
Its decent, but the foo's just do a lot for me. A lot of the songs just sound the same on this album. No killer songs on it for me that wants me to play it again. Generous 3
Leider zum Ende raus den Schwung verloren 3/5
I remember this album from the 90s but I did not realize it came out in 95. Kurt died in 94. Damn, Dave! That was quick! Anyway, good clean rock album with a non-grunge sound. Definitely worth to listen.
Was okay, started strong
I don’t think I had heard this one. It’s pretty good. Interesting to hear an earlier one that doesn’t have any of their hits on it. Made it less annoying.
Album n.6 Id like this is a call if it was like a minuite shorter, the songs on this album get boring fast. I dont have much to say about the first half, its not bad but like i dont really care. Theyre nice, for a while. The second half is better. I did enjoy most of the songs there. Favorite songs are: weenie beenie, x-static and wattershed. I rate it 3.45 Justice for all the cows
everybody was foo fighting
Fun
Ehh idk
goes hard when you're waiting in a long line at Kroger
An album that encapsulates my thoughts on the Foo Fighters- they have some very good songs, but probably more filler on balance. This starts off well, with the first few songs not exactly breaking new musical ground but representing a high quality example of the sounds of mid-90s American rock. It’s fairly similar to Nirvana’s hard edge, but does show some signs of evolution. Unfortunately, I think some of that evolution is towards some fairly cookie-cutter rock that had lost my attention by the end. A mixed bag.
This was a decent record, with nice vocal melodies, but sounds like a lot of the kind of alternative rock that was coming out around that time. As such, it wasn't really particularly groundbreaking, but a good listen all the same and there's some tracks I'll be sure to revisit.
- top heavy - i’d revisit but didn’t leave much of an impact on me
Rather bland, but there was something there that was almost interesting?
Felt a little generic, but I was into it Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: I’ll Stick Around
Good album but I suspect they have better ones.
I actually forgot how much I enjoy the foo fighters. I don't think I've actually listened to this album all the way through before. I enjoyed it, soulful rock music with a comforting vibe
I didn't care for this back in 1995, and I don't really care for it now. It's not bad, it's just pretty uninspired.
I've been patiently waiting for this one, so I was excited when I saw the cover, but I was awestruck when I read the wiki. I didn't know Dave Grohl had the capacity to be such a good one-man band. It suddenly makes sense why his name is so important in general. Conceptually, the slight sci-fi spin, the cathartic act of songwriting, the emotional composition, this album is pretty aced. Had I been a young adult in 1995, I probably would've appreciated this record a lot more. I mean it starts off pretty tight, but it sure does end in a bang. I'm really glad I gave this a listen and took the time to explore its background. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'm gonna be visiting this again. When I think of Foo Fighters, this is definitely the energy, but the songs have a much stronger hook. Nothing but the end track is calling out to me, so maybe this would be better for the record collection than for daily listening. It's a cool experience, it's deep when you reflect with it, but if I had to choose any somewhat aggressive and well executed record, I'd have too many outstanding options to fit this one as a possibility. 3.3/5
Solid debut
3.5
I think this was included solely because it's the first thing released by Dave Grohl after Nirvana ended. It's not their best album, but I get why this one was included and not another one. It's a good record, very important because of the events surrounding it, but The Colour And The Shape is their best work by far. They established themselves with that one. But I don't mind this one either.
cmon bro the day after i afk this site.... this fye. foo fighters rlly has a distinct stagnant beat in their songs which i can appreciate 2 - this is coo none of the songs really stood out to me cuz i was distracted LOL
Foo fighters are to butt rock as Nirvana is to grunge
niinku muksut sanois että mid
I've been a fan of the Foo Fighters over the years, but I don't think I've ever really listened to any of their/his albums in full before now (ironically including the one album that I own, the 2007 "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace"). It's a fun album, although definitely not Dave Grohl's strongest work, nor really the sound that Foo Fighters would later become, and also not all that well mixed/produced, oddly (although maybe that's just because he played every note and bang and word). I recognized and enjoyed the first three or four songs on the album, and was struck by how much Grohl was channeling Nirvana on hits like "I'll stick around" and most of the other tracks (especially "Good grief" and "Weenie beanie"), but thankfully experimented with a different groove on "Big me" (with a too-kitschy video) and a few others. A shame that this is the lone Foo Fighters album in the collection, as it's not what we deserve to hear from the Foo Fighters before we die, but at least we got some post-Cobain/-grunge from the gracious and talented Grohl.
not a big fan
Never really been my thing. All a bit safe and boring, tbh
Feels like he has the ingredients and they are all in the mixing bowl but not yet cooked. A solid preview is what is to come but just to much in its infancy. Better Foo Albums could have been here.
Foo Fighters are a band that I somehow have never paid much attention to. I found this to be tuneful commercial alterna-punk, which of course owes a lot to Nirvana, but feels very watered down in comparison. I didn't need to turn it off at any point, but I also wasn't really into it. 3 stars
Unidentified Flying Objects.
fine
Forgettable
Nota: 3.1
This is a decent album but if I'm in the mood for any of the versions of rock that this band purports to play, I can probably find a band I like way more to play it.
Overrated. Totally okay 90s grunge rock, just about holding up today. Sometimes solid, sometimes decent, cleaving close to average.
foo FIGH-ters
Sans plus mais ok
Kinda repetitive
Definitely not a bad album, a logical continuation of Nirvana's music and style; but still not something that left too strong of an impression on me 🙃
6/10 - 1001 is so many albums that I think you have to include some albums because of the narrative or because of the backstory. Grohl wrote and performed almost all of the instruments on this album as a way to process the passing of his friend. It’s not a perfect album but going from Nirvana and accidentally starting the Foo Fighters is an album worth listening to even if it’s only a 3.
A solid debut that starts off really strong and tails off at the end. I can hear the Nirvana influence in these songs. Strong 6/10
3.6
Dober
It’s fine, fun to listen to but not even my favourite of their albums
This is a call and big me are excellent paint by numbers rock songs. This is a very quick response to nirvana ending and some songs have similarities. Overall it's a very decent first album with a lot of formulaic guff
Great first album, I like other Foo albums better though
I thought I would be more impressed by this album, but it’s very generic 90s rock, I feel the next album the foo fighters sound is more consolidated and the hits start to come out
Is oke
Nie lubiem post grungu
This never really landed with me when it first came out although listening to it now, I am surprised because it essentially set the same template that they seem to have repeated ever since. Much like AC/DC, they’re the best at being them and doing what they do and if you like one of their albums, you can probably find something to like on all of them.
Highlights: Alone + Easy Target, Oh George, Weenie Beenie. In a nutshell: picking up where he left off. I think Kurt would be proud of Dave for this album. It sounds like Nirvana in parts (see Alone + Easy Target) and in others Grohl is exploring a new direction (Oh, George is a glimpse of Foo Fighters we know today). Don't expect poetry here. It's just Dave doing everything. And yes, he is in Animal mode when on the drums. Enjoy it for what it is. Overall: 5/10
Raw. A first foray into a solo album for Grohl with an insight into Foo Fighters before their existence as we know it. Cookie cutter rock so meh from me. A couple good songs save this from a 2. Shoutout Weenie Beenie.
Enjoyed it, fun listen, but not exactly my style. Would listen to it again tho no problem.
Even when I was young and my personality was based around rock music, this band just never really did it for me. Sort of generic and uninspired.
This album was ok. There are some damn good songs but this was the early days for foo fighters. Dave grohl was the only member and wasn't long after the end of Nirvana, so the grunge sound was still very prevalent in a lot of songs on this album . It hadn't quite found its footing yet with establishing its own identity separate from Nirvana. But there are still some good songs like This is a Call and I'll Stick Around. Dave Grohl was the only member at the time so they wouldn't become a fully fledged band until the next album. Not a bad album but still too close to nirvana to make an impact yet.
Would give 3.5 if I could.
3/5
I never listened to it in the '90s, but somehow I heard it anyway? Good stuff, as Dave Grohl politely steps away from Nirvana (now and then sounding like Eels!), and opens the curtain on a fine new band.
Decent album, nothing really jumps out about this tho. The songs are all decent and generally speaking the album is solid. I haven't ever sat down and listened to a Foo Fighters album before, but I feel that they can do better than this. This definitely isn't their most popular record, but it's a good jumping off point for what the group will become. It's decent, but not pushing any boundaries for the genre. Fav Track: This is a Call
Actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought it would. Surprisingly accomplished considering the circumstances etc and considering it was recorded by Grohl himself in around a week. Wouldn't listen again but a solid 3
Not a fan of the Foos. This is probably the one I rate the most.
Nostalgia overload used to listen this on the way to college, some fillers on there but a thoroughly solid debut album
Not the best album but I did enjoy the sound and creativeness.
Foo bar baz qux.
Meh
Not to familiar with grunge as a grunge (or I guess post grunge) but this album was a really good intro to what I assume is a very vast genre. It feels very slimy but not as dark or messy as the cover would suggest. The front half of the record is some honestly great stuff but I feel like the album gets a little weaker as it goes on but it is still very solid especially exhausted. Even with that I would def listen to it again. My fav tracks: This is the call, I'll stick around, Big Me, Floaty, exhausted
Pretty cool that this was an anonymous creative (and SOLO) project by Grohl following the end of Nirvana. He already had his sound established.
I liked it as much as I can like a rock album, not being a big fan of the genre.
It's alright. Doesn't sound as good as the first time I listened to it years ago. I have grown and it has aged. Stand out song - Big Me
Perfectly fine, still developing sounds, Grohl is fine.
I mean it's good because it's Foo Fighters, but I feel like they had better albums. This was a bit sparse and I didn't recognize any of the songs. Didn't really hit for me.
not sure about this one. I mean it's good and all...
Memories of senior year and that one time Tanner brought over Shyla and I cooked spaghetti for the first time and didn't drain the grease.
As a nirvana fan i felt like foo fighters abit lackluster, the songs where good im just not a fan of the vocal delivery with some of these songs and it kinda just goes for foo fighters in general, i think Dave Grohl is a better drummer then a vocalist
Decent but like overall I’m pretty anti foo fighters but I was pleasantly surprised
Levi would be very proud and dissapointed in me, this just didn't hit like he hyped it up in high school
Take everything good out of Nirvana and you’ll get Foo Fighters debut album. So generic, so biteless. Even when Grohl tries to be edgy and angsty, like when shouting “I don't owe you anything” in I’ll Stick Around, it’s so blunt that you don’t believe him, you think “what a fraud”. Gee, it doesn’t even deserve 2 as it couldn’t even be called shit, so generic and plain it is (and that’s the case when 3 should be more embarrassing to the artist than 1)
Foo fighters are mostly a miss for me. And I'll say it, I don't care for Everlong. That being said, maybe it was the day that I listened to this one, or maybe I'm having a change of heart, but This album was a solid "alright" to listen to. Probably won't revisit anytime soon
as someone who only listens to foo fighters every once in a while, it was actually kinda nice to get this album because i had never heard it. harkening back to yesterday's point, i genuinely believe the guitar work in this album is more "punk rock" than yesterday's, in spite of all the weird claims that it was foundational. still can't get over that. honestly so sad that nobody told me about "Weenie Beenie" until now. this song fucking rules.
not my favorite foo fighter sorry david
I really like these early Foo Fighters albums. If they stopped making music after like 1999, they’d be held in pretty high regard I think.
A raw but solid debut for a band that was just going to get a lot better with their next two albums. Top tracks: "Big Me," "This is a Call," "Floaty"
I don't think I have ever heard this album before. Not the biggest fan of Foo Fighters, I don't mind them but it goes into the "passable radio music" category. This album was very average even in that standard. I don't know if the album meant a lot when it came out but listening to it now wasn't anything special to me.
Foo Fighters are a group that I really tried to enjoy as a kid, but I couldn't get through a whole album because I just found them a bit dull. I did make it through this album, but I also don't remember any of it. I literally couldn't name a single track I listened to. Nothing stood out. Nothing grabbed my attention/focus. It's generic-sludgy-background-rock. Listenable, but mostly in that you won't really realise you're listening to it. Very very low 3.
Raw and unfiltered
I've always enjoyed listening to the odd Foo Fighters song when it comes on the radio, but not so much that I've wanted to buy their albums. This first album is all Dave Grohl, before the band. It's good, post-grunge rock, but I still don't want to buy the albums.
Wiki tells me Dave Grohl wrote the first Foo Fighters album and then recorded it himself in six days, with the assistance of producer Barrett Jones. I’ve never really engaged with Foo Fighters, so the album’s origin story was new to me, and inspired some serious listening. It’s a very good record, but unfortunately doesn’t arouse the same kind of emotional response the Nirvana records did, but how can it? Kurt Cobain’s vulnerability was at the core of everything Nirvana did, whereas Foo Fighters sound supremely confident, and far too frothy for serious scrutiny. It’s a fabulous pop grunge record, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Needs more angst. 7/10
I like Foo but this is just kinda meh. You can tell it's early and just figuring things out. But also that greatness isn't far off. 2.75/5
Impressive that Dave recorded all of it himself! Some good songs but far from the finished article, and there are much better albums by them - colour and the shape came out only 2 years later! Must have some cultural significance from before my time because otherwise I don't really understand how this one made it on the list
Some really classic Foo sounds in this album…nice to see they’ve stayed true to their original voice. Found some tracks a tad more grungy than expected…but I guess it was the mid 90’s. Didn’t find any ‘bangers’ at n my opinion, but a decent opening and an enjoyable enough album.
Pretty mid. Not Creed
Another album that I'm slightly surprised at its' inclusion on this list. It's a very good album, and the similarities to Nirvana are most notable here. But I feel like there are better Foo Fighters albums that warrant a place. That being said, it's raw and grungy, and most tracks hit the spot. Favourites: Alone + Easy Target Floaty Exhausted
Cheated on wife
Count me as shocked that the Foo Fighters were Dave Grohl & only Grohl on the first record. Grohl essentially picks up where Nirvana left off, but it's really more than that. Cobain's suicide is clearly the thematic underlay of the project, & the album is as much a working thru as it as a talking about, i.e., grungy cathartics take on a more specific meaning here: 'I've taken all & I've endured / One day it all will fade, I'm sure'; 'Beg me to talk about it / I could stand to prove'; 'Hate it, hate it / Hate it, hate it / Hate it, hate it.' I do appreciate the tragic backdrop to which this album is an answer, & some of tunes have memorable bite & punch, but as far as the music goes overall, it's legitimately emotional but not all that interesting. 'Raw' won't suffice.

Good album but melodies and arrangements do get a bit repetitive. Some classics though
I remember owning this album and the Colour and the Shape in middle school / high school. And while I distinctly remember listening to the latter on repeat, I can barely remember this one. Now I know why. The Foo fighters self-titled debut is really just three recognizable songs, admittedly each unique in their own way, and a bunch of songs that are pretty generic rock and all kind of sound the same. It's a punky or album that I remember, but not necessarily in a good way? I don't know, this was just mid for me. I really did enjoy the first three tracks, but those were the radio hits from this one. The rest of it didn't do much for me.
are all the rock songs like this ?
I like a lot of the Foo Fighters’ singles (and it’s no exception here) but a whole album becomes harder to get through, with a rock sound that can be a bit generic and by the numbers in places.
I like a lot of Foo Fighters output, but this album is not as good as some of their later releases.
Meh. Not for me. I’m not the audience.
Not cool, the Foo Fighters. I feel an immense sense of dread at the thought of having to listen to this album. I can't help but think of those poor souls who were damned to an eternity in prison for downloading the Foo Fighters (preservetube.com/watch?v=LZgeIReY04c). It's highly likely that I'm familiar with the Foo Fighters' music in some way - likely through radio osmosis, but no thoughts are immediately coming to mind. I'll hedge my bets on a 90s alt rock album, albeit with a slightly more hardcore, metal-y sound. Here goes. Alt rock, grunge, melodic hardcore. I was more or less there with my prediction, right? I wasn't into this album on the first listen, but I'm more favourable to it now that I'm playing it back on shuffle as I write this review. The music is certainly competent. The growling guitars have a decent level of bite to them. While they don't break the mold and are somewhat samey throughout, they're never unengaging or boring. The same can be said about the vocals. It might be sacrilege, but I prefer these offerings from Dave Grohl over the equivalent output from Kurt Cobain. What can I say? I prefer a little energy over the disaffected drawl which traditionally comes from grunge. The better vocal performances of the album typically have a weightless feel to them, slowly oscillating between a high and low pitch with some gracious, stressed syllables. A welcome contrast against the heavy, domineering instrumentals. Overall, yeah. It was decent. Grunge still isn't my deal, but I have some respect for this album. Book time. The band was created by David Grohl of Nirvana. Most of the material on this album was written while Nirvana were still active. A "grunge-pop" album apparently, which I suppose I can believe. He performed the guitars, drums and bass himself in addition to recording the entire album in a week. "Big Me" has some "Beatle-esque melodies", apparently. Yeah, this albums seems to have earned its place in the book. It's impressive that Grohl was able to strong-arm much of the project by himself. They could probably do with a second list album, if I'm honest. I've seen the cover to their follow-up album a couple of times while poking around on the Internet, so I like to imagine that album has held up well, too. For the time being, I cosign this inclusion.
Cool that he did all the instruments but it was MID
I still enjoy some of this but taken as an entire album, it gets kind of flat by the end.
someday i will treat you good
Classic Foo-ey's sound. I didn't mind it.
Wanted to like this more than I did. The opening tracks fell flat for me but it picked up around the middle again with Good Grief and Floaty. Lost it towards the end again.
Sure sounds like childhood. It's simple, flat and in your face but it's not bad. Leaning 3 or 4.
Rock. A decent album but just okay.
I was 14 when this album came out. Grunge was everywhere. Me and my friends passed this tape around. The Big Me music vid was a cultural touchpoint. I don’t really like much Foo Fighters past this album - nostalgia only takes you so far - but I still love the raw energy of a man who felt compelled to keep making music. Some filler tunes bring it down to a 3/5
S’alright I guess
2,5
3*, can see the bones of what was coming but not my bag
Some headbangers here classico metal though
Fine, but not really for me. A bit to loud but has some fun songs.
Absolute blast from the past. Fun, rock and pop vibes, much better than more recent Foo Fighter albums in my opinion. However, is it top a 1001 album, nope. It's not pushing the boundaries, nor is it leaving a legacy that stands the rest of time. At best, it's more fun than Nirvana, but the Foo's evolved from here with Colour and the Shape, as well as Nothing left to lose. I enjoy the album, but it's not worthy of this list.
this is fine, none of it caught my attention but it wasn't offensively bad or anything. diet nirvana.
Not my vibe good nontheless i like the energetic parts but they can be few and far between and repetative
Generic butt rock album. Not bad, just not something I'd listen to.
This is fine. Foo Fighters have some absolute bangers, but most of it is just fine
I never got into Foo Fighters despite being a huge Nirvana fan. It’s impressive that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded every song on this album, and I appreciate that it’s less polished than later Foo Fighters albums. But I just can’t connect, even though musically, it’s a perfectly serviceable album.
It's quite good but nothing groudbreaking or outstanding. I think I liked the last track best where it turned a bit shoegazey
Joa ist schon gut
Definitely not their best work, but it was decent enough.
Fav Songs: Big Me, I'll Stick Around, This Is A Call, Alone + Easy Target Least Fav: X-Static 6.4/10
Foo Fighters – Foo Fighters (1995) On Day 67, the Foo Fighters' debut was an all-around good listen, especially considering it was entirely a one-man job. Dave Grohl's production capability is impressive here; he managed to make a solo project sound like a full, high-energy band. While I caught some visible shades of Nirvana in the sound, the album ultimately didn't do enough to pull me off my feet. There were definitely some good tracks, with Big Me and For All the Cows standing out as personal highlights. However, as a body of work, it feels a bit too "decent" without having enough to consistently bring me back for more. It’s a well-executed start to a new chapter, but for me, it sits at a solid 3/5.
Album 21/1001. Listened 3/6/2026. It's ok, but one of those albums that didn't age particularly well for me. I love 90s grunge rock, but this didn't quite hit it for me.
Not bad but not really much to write home about. It felt a tad repetitive after the first 30 minutes. I'd gladly listen to its songs as standalones in a playlist or sorts. But as an album I didn't really enjoy it that much.
This is, for better or worse, just fine. Nothing really special, but nice to listen to. So, it's kind of average for me. It may grow if I kept listening, but I don't think I'll find the time.
Top 3: This Is a Call, Exhausted, Good Grief
Not FF's (Grohl ig here) best work. Genreric sounding rock, tho I enjoy Dave's vocals. Standout: Good grief and Big me
Soft 3
Great album. The long drawl mid-song in Exhausted is annoying but the rest is just solid rock.
ehhh, nothing bad, but not particularly impressive either.
Started strong but a bit repetitive toward the end.
I remember when this came out it was so different from what was around at the time. Classic rock feel without being classic
I like it - brings me good memories
def not their best album. Decent radio rock, that's it
i remember when Taylor Hawkins died, i lived in Bogotá at the time, awful news to hear.
Töissä. Oli ok
Yeah pretty good but classic rock isn’t really my thing anymore
Some good songs on this debut. I like the Foo Fighters.
I enjoyed it but you can feel the after effects of nirvana and you just find yourself comparing it to nirvana
bom album de rock com excelentes baterias
Sounds like a debut album. There's some interesting moments but it didn't really grab me in any direction. Big Me almost sounds 1950s rock in some places.
Disappointed in this one. Not bad, but kind of bland.
I’m way more of a Nirvana fan than Foo Fighters. It’s hard to believe this album came out 14 months after Kurt died. This album has some well known FF songs. Their music is just too blah for me.
It’s fine rock music. I think I do agree a bit with some other reviews that there is something generic about it but tbh this feels very approachable for someone who isn’t a rock fan for the most part (that’s me).
generic easy listening rock…. but nostalgia holds it together
meh
Reasonable rock album, very good for a debut.
This is the Foo Fighters debut album, and it’s mostly hard rock. I did not like the screaming in “Weenie Beenie”, so a downgrade for that. Also the heavy metal on some tracks annoyed me slightly. Otherwise it was acceptable, so all in all it ends up with three stars.
A guy in my middle school who was big into Mormonism was also BIG into the Foo Fighters. But that isn't why I never got into them* (except for that one music video); it's because the vocals are soooo uninteresting. I guess to be fair they do have a distinct sound, but for whatever reason I don't care for it. Maybe because like Nickelback, all the songs sound the same. This album is just 'Learn to Fly' x12. Better than Led Zeppelin though. *I say "them" but it turns out this is a bit of a Nine Inch Nails situation; it's really just Dave Grohl. Kudos to him (but also that makes a lot of sense). Lowlight: 'Weenie Beenie'
Blast from the past. It’s good but there are other FF albums that are much better, but it’s impressive what Dave Grohl did on this album
Soft in the knee Nirvana
A good debut that is instantly recognisable as Foo Fighters. A solid three stars.
Pleasantly surprised by this one. It doesn’t have the highs of the Color and The Shape but arguably is a more consistent album overall, and it’s a hell or a lot stronger than later life dad rock Foo Fighters. Good album
I wasn't feeling it yesterday, but I came back to it this morning for the second half and had a great time.
It's ok, heavy enough at times, catchy enough at times
Hard rock just isn’t really my thing
380/1089 - This might be "Boss-Baby-ish" of me but I hear a slight trace of The Police. The first track has drum references to "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" and "Driven to Tears."
My earliest memory of this was going to try to buy it at release from Best Buy. Their weekly Sunday circular showed it out that week, so I had my parents drive me there with whatever little money I had scrounged up to buy it. Well, new release day was Tuesday or Wednesday at that point, so they didn't have it. Never ended up buying it, for whatever reason, and it would be years before I actually listened to it in full. It's a good album. Not great, and I don't think we'd be talking about it too much today if it was from someone other than The Drummer from Nirvana right after Kurt killed himself. Dave shows a lot of range as both a guitarist (musician as a whole, really), and a vocalist, neither of which I would have expected at the time. I won't pretend I was super tapped into music in middle school, though. Solid record, and worth a spin now and then, but nothing particularly ground breaking.
Big me is such a timepiece
Pretty decent, I think the story behind the album is very poignant but the music itself didn't really stand out to me much.
hab nicht aufgepasst, aber nicht schlecht
I thought this album was fine. Sonically it’s good, but there weren’t a lot of songs that stood out to me. The handful that did, however I thought were excellent and am definitely going to be adding in rotation. The majority of the album just felt like this is cool but i wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this.
Never really taken to the Foo Fighters and this album has not helped change my views. First track sounds like a nirvana track that failed to make the cut and does not improve from then on.
Used to be a massive foo fighters fan, have seen them live twice yet was in a way surprised to see this album make the list as I believe The Colour and The Shape is much superior, with this album pretty much being put together by a one-man band in Dave Grohl. First half of the album is strong and the closer Exhausted is a very underrated song in the FFs catalogue. Having said that there is a fair bit of material in the second half of the album that I find inferior to what the Foos would put out 2 years later. I’ll Stick Around and This is A Call remain great tracks but this album is lacking a truly massive single that the band would consistently churn out at least one of with every album following this for 20 years. Overall a decent listen and an album pretty reflective of the mid-90s alt rock era that was coming out of grunge’s peak, nothing game changing.
Feeling pretty neutral
Retroactively saying that Abbey Road was 4 stars so this makes sense.
Makes you appreciate how important Kurt Cobain was to Nirvana as a creative force. This is perfectly servicable, if fairly generic, 90s grunge. But it seem to be to Nevermind or In Utero what one of Ringo or George's solo albums was to Revolver.
We're supposed to rave about the Foo Fighters, but they don't do it for me. This album better than I expected, a couple of ok tunes, but it doesn't go anywhere. Just gets a bit dull after a while.
I little bit of harder rock trending toward emo. Like green day. More my generation of 90s rock. I do like some FF songs but this album isn't doing it for me.
Used to love this, now have a hard time bc of Dave. Hard to separate the art from artist behaving badly
"Nicest guy in rock" Yep, yep, we're on the worst timeline folks
Weenie Beenie riff is cool
This was ok. Never really listened to this band before. First half was better than I expected, second half kinda blended together. For a one man show, it sounds pretty good, but it’s not really my genre. Torn on how to rate it. I think for my taste it’s more of a 2.5/5, guess I’ll round up cause I didn’t hate it?
Just hootin’ and hollering at this point. I’m sure there’s probably lore and what nots but I just wanted to listen to something nice to start the day. ya maybe I’ll be in mood to listen to this type beat some other time but yes drums obv, and repetitive lyricism, and some songs do got cool wavy sounds.
You need to listen to this album LOULDY. Despite the racket, it's also tuneful in places. Big Me has always been a personal fave. This Is a Call great calling card to kick start all things Foos. A rare example of me liking something that feels like I ought to be wearing double denim to truly appreciate.
Sounds a bit like nirvana
I like Foo Fighters well enough, but their debut album is a weird choice for this list. Think I only knew 3 or 4 of the songs on this and mostly not their big hitters, it's a different era of the band that they didn't stick to. It's alright.
Fine and all, Nirvana just does the whole thing better in mine opinion. Background music for me. Favorite song: Exhausted.
Not my favorite Foo Fighters album. The popular songs from the album are decent, but I didn’t care much for the deeper cuts. I think they’re a great rock band but there was a bit too much noise on a lot of the tracks for my liking.
It was a mid album to be honest. I do love the songs: Big Med, Floaty, and Exhausted, but also this is the first album I skipped a song because I didn't like it, so it's just mid honestly.
expected more
This is an energetic and engaging album. It’s not overly polished and it’s not that deep, but it has rocking guitar and drums and you feel drawn in. It definitely feels like a great start to a band (once he got the band part) that went on to do great things.
The fighters of foo are born. This is a difficult album to like … it’s Grohl as a member of Nirvana trying to find his own voice. But the is so little room for others when Cobain is around, and he was around when most of the songs were written and was a huge posthumous presence for the other 4. There are signs of the promising future on the recognizable hits, but the rest is just extended versions of Territorial Pissings, Grohl trying to stretch the skin of Nirvana to make it fit his heavier rock and roll tendencies. He will learn to blend the two styles better, write better songs and collaborate with better musicians soon. Foo will start to soar on the next album, The Colour and The Shape. But it doesn’t really happen here just yet.
Drummer from Nirvana did pretty well here. I really like this album because I think we see a bit of who Dave Grohl is. This album feels therapeutic, not in lyrics or theme, but in discovering ones self. Imagine being part of the worlds biggest band then waking up one morning and it's gone. Dave chose to dive into creating an album alone and find his own voice. The album is a project in which more was learned than produced, but it's a great album none the less. Daves recent history with Nirvana meshed with his punk roots, cool sound and a great success.
I appreciate that Dave Grohl is a talented guy and I was a fan of Nirvana, but Foo Fighters has never fully clicked for me. I like tracks like This is a Call and I'll Stick Around, I always thought Big Me is too gimmicky with the video and all. Most of this music leaves me wanting something that's not there. This is not Nirvana, but I don't think he was trying to create Nirvana Mark II. It's his own sound and maybe it's his attempt at catharsis after Cobain's suicide, I don't know. I give him a lot of credit for that, but I just don't like this enough to give more than a 3.
It's good. Sounds like the Foo Fighters. An impressive achievement given that nearly everything was played by Dave Grohl. I will be listening to this again, but probably not more than other FF albums.
too rock and roll for me
Good debut from former Nirvana drummer
Classic new rock
Starts out strong, however lacks the longer the album goes on. Keeps a good cohesive feel throughout, but is average overall
Many different sounds and takes on the genre, started strong and then kinda fell off hard.
Fun listen but not their best work
I don't think I've listened to a full Foo Fighters album in a long time - I've kind of thought of them like a John Mellencamp where the singles are catchy and enjoyable and I wouldn't change the station if they were on but the album tracks weren't worth a full dive. Listening to this one again after all this time changed my mind a bit - the singles are clearly the stars, but it's overall very catchy. The lyrics are pretty forgettable, but they don't get in the way of the hooks and the melodies and most of the non-single tracks are still pretty dang fun. It's definitely a bit front-loaded and could stand to be 2-3 songs shorter, but way more fun than I remembered and definitely earns it place on radio rotation.
