Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Didn’t hate it at first, but it quickly stated to get tedious. A track or two is fine; I don’t need a whole Foo Fighters album

Weird, I generally picked up Foo Fighter CDs as they came out. Yes, it is butt rock, but it is usually fun shouty melodic mindless stuff. Grohl seems like a decent bloke most of the time, which is a rarity. This was, um, OK - no clear bangers

rock music 👍🏽

I bought this album tbe day it came out, being a massive Nirvana fan and all. I used to really like it a lot. After this album I never really bothered with the Foo Fighters but a girlfriend at the time lent me The Colour And The Shape which was decent. Anyway, this is definitely better than the vast majority of Foo stuff I randomly heard later on. Dave Grohl probably should have gone solo. Given that his Probation stuff is heavy and great I do wonder why the Foo Fighters are so MOR.

Ok but most interest half way

i quite like this so far, more than other foo fighters records I've heard. I like this early grunge sound plus the melodies are very nice, almost pop. Got a bit bored towards the end but decent background music. 3/3.5

It's a fine album but not particularly memorable. I don't really see much to set it apart from other efforts and I doubt I'll be revisiting.

Started off very meh and just wasn’t catching my attention, but the second half was a lot better.

A great start to a life post Nirvana that has proved very fruitful in the long term…. Nice diy feel, though find by the end of the album being a bit bored…

Meh it sounded like a worse Dinosaur Jr. Rating: 3.0

Foo Fighters was a central part of my musical upbringing! There are some early signs of the greatness that is to come, but they are still lacking in the song structures and dynamics within each piece — both being central aspects of the band at their best.

Foo Fighters

Buen grupo con el que no he conectado del todo. No son Nirvana

I didn't know this was all Grohl - pretty cool. This has a more pop/radio appeal than Nirvana and overall better imo. FF had some cool videos early on, starting with "Big Me", and I think that did a lot to get the band over. It's good, but not really a must-hear album. 3.4

Quite good but they've done better

Pretty banging

Not their best

Starts off strong and declines slightly. The second half not nearly as much of a vibe, we were glad when it finished.

Good effort back when Grohl \"looked like a horse-faced lesbian\" and he played like it was his one shot (who knows if he’d gotten a second one). second half loses some of the initial punch, but the overall feel is a fun and packs lots of 90s nostalgica.

Colour and Shape should be on this list, their debut should not. Foo Fighters are a very average band but hard not to like due to Dave Ghrol being a great guy. A star rating represents the foo fighters overall not just this album which would be 2 stars.

Couldn’t really hear the vocals on this which I didn’t like

3.25 Favorite Song: For all the cows Brings a great start to the Foo Fighters reign over the alternative scene but leaves a lot to be wanted. The "Foo Fighters" sound is clearly not established yet still basing a lot on distortion and not leaning into the drum heavy complexity we see today. Overall good debut.

Impressive that Dave Grohl did it all. An average album for Foo fighters

Helt ait 3.5

Muss man mal gehört haben. Zählt aber nicht zu meinen persönlichen Lieblingsalben. Für meinen Geschmack zu Gitarrenlastig. Wer's mag, das Album ist OK.

Rating: 6/10 Starts off great with the first few songs: catchy melodies, fun riffs, and great energy. After this the album starts to sound like generic 90s hard rock. It is impressive how Dave Grohl plays all of the instruments though. Favorite songs: This Is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Big Me, Good Grief. Worst songs: Floaty, Weenie Beenie.

Muy bueno.

very cool intro to foo farters. maybe im just a little farter but like those first couple songs hit me good and also floaty. i dunno

Love Dave Grohl, this album it's ok. I didn't get bored, but it didn't make me excited either Simply 3/5

Fine standard rock & roll album, doesn’t seem to have many of the hits on it.

Good stuff. I've heard it a bunch of times and I still like it. Reminds me of younger days. I was 18 when this came out so it was really perfect timing to make an impression on me.

Solid album, most of the songs sounded the same. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there should be more variation. Some songs are really good, like “Big Me” and “Wattershed”. Overall a pretty enjoyable album. 7/10

Nothing against Dave Grohl, but to me this is kind of generic rock music. It’s not bad, but just not super interesting to me.

Frekar boring plata to be honest. Fannst fyrstu þrjú lögin fersk en svo var þetta bara bar eftir bar af gritty fyrirsjáanlegu gítarrunki sem mér fannst ekki skemmtó.

It was all fine. It all sounded very Foo Fighters like but there weren't any great songs here to make it memorable

Fine. Not huge fan of any song2/3***

I am very fond of Dave Grohl. I am not very fond of Foo Fighters. I was a huge Nirvana fan in the 90s, but never really warmed to Foo Fighters. Listening to this album, I think the non-radio singles are more punk, and better songs, but it all sounds very 90s - which is great! But it's still only fine. *Maybe* I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could do half stars, but I'm not agonizing about giving it a 3, either. Give it a listen. Or don't. You won't regret either decision. It's that kind of album.

kind of boring?

Their best album.

Disappointing. I expected to enjoy this a lot more than I did. Perhaps I prefer their later stuff, or maybe I’ve just never listened to a whole album, so never realised how similar all their songs are, but either way this album did little for me

I feel asleep. I was tired, so I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Simpsons: Yes

It's OK. Can tell its a debut album as its not as polished as later foo fighters.

I didn’t really like this album when it came out very nirvana lite. But it’s gotten better the second side is pretty good

Slightly carbonated water.

Solid debut. Opens with 5 star energy but sheds some star weight as it goes.

I had a friend in High School who said that the best part about Kurt Cobain’s suicide was Foo Fighters. Not having listened to this in a long time I found the top 3 and last 3 songs to be good and the rest forgettable. If you’re going to listen to a Foo Fighters album go with the Color and Shape Of.

some bits were too grungey for me. overall I was meh on this and prefer the more sanitized foo fighters

I'm not sure I ever knew the original Foo Fighters was just a cover name for Dave Grohl with the band coming after the fact. I think it speaks a lot to me that these songs were recorded because of grief, but most were written while Kurt Cobain was still alive. There's certainly some distinct Nirvana influence as many others have pointed out, but I think it gives the album a matter of prominence as we all dealt with losing Cobain

Possibly the most 3-star album I've ever heard. It's rock music, it's fine, it's nothing spectacular. I quite like Foo Fighters - they are nice and easy to listen to, entertaining enough, but unlikely to make me sit up and go 'holy shit!'

Rusty Foo Fighters.

Don't particularly care for the foo fighters but this is decent album

Just rock - simple as that

Angsty and see the early signs of their power ballads but overall not a great album.

good album! i liked it a lot many good songs 3.5/5.0

You can feel Kurt's influence on almost all the songs. Dirty, not innovative but somehow good album to hear if you just want to chill and let the time pass by

Solid. Not my fav sound.

Who knew the drummer from Nirvana had a full-on rock record hiding in his back pocket? Dave Grohl’s DIY debut comes barrelling out of the gate with three straight bangers before easing into something more reflective, and while it never fully escapes Nirvana’s long shadow, it doesn’t really need to. This is closer to Nevermind than In Utero—less self-laceration, more hooky release—best described as grungy power pop with stadium-sized instincts already peeking through the fuzz. “This Is a Call” explodes with arena-ready drums and a deceptively sticky chorus, “I’ll Stick Around” leans into a grimmer snarl, and “Big Me” proves Grohl can write pure pop sweetness without embarrassment. “Floaty” hints at a gentler, more wistful band that might’ve been, before predictably crashing back into distortion. Not everything lands: “Weenie Beenie” overreaches with Cobain-style screaming that doesn’t quite fit Grohl’s strengths, and “X-Static” feels like a Nirvana outtake from an alternate timeline. Still, for a first pass made largely alone, Foo Fighters sounds less like a side project and more like the start of a very loud, very durable future.

They kinda float between the poppy mellow sound of Big Me and the more aggressive punch of Weenie Beenie. On some tracks they go both mellow and hard like on For All the Cows. Foo Fighters end up constructing a pretty solid debut and Grohl makes it clear from the start that he’s not looking to be Nirvana part 2. Strong album 3.5 stars

An okay background rock album. Not too screamy and actually pretty chill in spots. Another album for the pub night.

Foo Fighters Like everyone I love Dave Grohl, and while I do like FF, they always seem to be a band with some great songs and then a lot of middling stuff. I’ve had greatest hits and I’ve seen them live a couple of times but I don’t know if I’ve ever listened to this album. This is a Call, really catchy, always liked this song. I’ll Stick Around - like the verses a lot on this, the chorus I’m not as keen on. Great drumming. Big Me, very sweet little tune, like this one. Alone + Easy Target - enjoyed this a bit more the second and third time, pretty catchy chorus. Good Grief, Floaty, Weenie Beenie, Oh, George - These are all a bit samey, a bit fillery and forgettable for me. For All the Cows - I like this one a lot. A little bit of litheness and groove X-Static - Enjoyed the tom-tom on this but apart from that not particularly memorable. Wattershed - Fine thrashy tune, if a bit forgettable Exhausted - I like this one, the lyrics and music complement the mood and feel. The little guitar melody underneath the heavily distorted rhythm guitar in the verses is very nice. It’s of course not fair to compare it to Nirvana, but aside from the loud guitars and some of the drumming I can’t actually see that much commonality. I love that he did the whole thing himself, evidently not to McCartney-esque levels of virtuosity or songwriting skill, but it is very cool. However there’s no disguising that essentially these are demos and that many of the songs are very 90s-ish rock by numbers, and without his drumming things would feel very pedestrian pretty quickly. It’s not terrible by any means, there are a handful of very good tunes but I don’t think there’s enough to pique enough long term interest to come back to and listen through again. I like Grohl a lot and appreciate he played everything himself and he did it at a very difficult time after Kurt died, but ultimately it lacks a bit of variety and excitement, especially in the last half where it does get pretty samey. I appreciate it wasn’t supposed to be a grand artistic statement and it sounds like it was very important mentally for him to do it but it does end up feeling quite middling. ⭐⭐⭐️

Did not listen to it yet but I will

Rating: 6/10. Good not great. Not my taste, but has value. Might make it into rotation if I liked the genre. Genre: Rock Foo Fighters. None of the hits, but it all sounds Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters.

I’ll Stick Around Big Me Floaty Weenie Beenie Oh, George For All The Cows Not the worst. Very average sound. I wouldn’t say it was bad but i wasnt jumping out of my seat listening to them. Drums were good. Lyrics and melody were on loops at times. Wouldn’t be mad if it came on the radio tho.

Crisp and driving, with some decent melodies and a hard edge, but also pretty boring. Hard to say just how much better Nirvana was than this lot ... history might find them to be near equivalents.

Pretty decent debut from Dave Grohl

Fairly solid album, but it's easy to see where the band is still trying to find its footing. Not my favorite from them by quite a margin, but there's a few great pieces, like Big Me that make it enjoyable nonetheless.

I was not a fan of Foo Fighters' radio hits in 1995 and never listened to the album. I still feel the same after listening this week. I did/do love Nirvana and some of the guitar reminds me of them, likely due to Dave Grohl. I enjoyed the guitar and drums in parts, but as a while, not an album I need to listen to again. Some of the songs I might listen to would be This is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Floaty, and Exhausted. However, it is probably a good album to put in a 1995 time capsule.

I remember really fucking with this in the 90s. Again, would love to give this an extra half star but fuck me I guess?

Best I can say about this is that it is alright. Not bad, not great.

Meh. I really enjoy the image of these guys. Dave Grohl is an enjoyable personality and I appreciate that he appears to straddle the line between "rock star" and "family man". This band definitely is consistent with staying power. They write hits. Seeing them live is a legit enjoyable experience. However with the records I don't find myself seeking them out that much. It's quality rock pop that is pleasing all around, and especially fun live - but maybe a little generic when it comes to deciding what I wanna blast in the car or space out to in the headphones. Much respect though.

Try as I might, I just can't *love* the Foo Fighters, despite loving Dave Grohl as a person and as a drummer. Their music has always been just... meh. Predictable chord progressions, time signatures, etc. Too pop, I guess, or stadium rock. Anyway, 3/5 for the fact that Dave recorded this whole thing on his own, and there are a few decent, memorable songs on here.

Good debut from the band, but their follow-ups are a significant step up from this.

Impressive that all music, singing, and instruments were all performed by Dave Grohl. The one non-angry radio hit was 'Big Me'.

Although generic, it still sounds good. My favorite is Good Grief.

I liked it. Good harmonies and impressive that Dave played it all

Never listened to this when it came out, though I always did like "Big Me" (in large part due to the Mentos parody video), I can safely say to my younger self that I didn't miss much. While impressive for a largely solo production, and one done simply for fun and catharsis at that, it doesn't change the fact that it's pretty boring. This would have been a lot better as a demo or EP, as Grohl seemed to have run out of ideas after the first 3 songs, and those aren't really all they exciting. A lot of the rest is just diet Nirvana or Weezer B-sideish. That's not necessarily damning, but combined with the repetitive lyrics I just find it dull. I understand Dave is a good member of the music community and seems to be a decent dude, so I don't want to shit on "Foo Fighters" too much, but I just see no reason to listen to this over something more character. It's better than anything I've ever put out, but it's definitely not anything I ever feel the need to put on again.

bissel raw

It's a good first effort. A bit bland... but catchy enough.

Estuvo bueno, más que nada el inicio :)

Never was a foo fan

Not bad (except Weenie Beenie), but I like their later work more. Stand-out: Oh, George

Dave Grohl is a good person, but I’m often pretty underwhelmed by The Foo Fighters. 2.5/5

I'm happy there is popular modern rock music but the Foo Fighters have never been my favorite. Can't quite put my finger on why. I liked the album, particularly their softer/slower songs, but don't see myself going back to it too often. Might just have to get more used to their sound which is very distinct.

i mean. ok lang. there were some bops, but generally it was like. the same all throughout?

Foo Fightersin eka levy. Dave Grohl ei ollut vielä ihan hittikone, mutta kyllä sen tyylin kuulee jo. Miksaus auton kaijuttimista ainakin vähän outo. Vokaalit tosi takana. Parhaat: Big Me, Good Grief, Wattershed

Not as good as I am used to, but still a lot better then what I have heard as well

Pretty good. A lovely balance of poppy and heavy. A few four star songs. I remember this album being a big deal when it came out.

The most 3 album I ever heard in my life.

2.5 - much prefer the later stuff. I liked the last song the most

"This Is a Call" and "Big Me" are transcendent. The rest are meh.

foo fighters

Not my favorite Foo but not bad.

Starts out with a post-grunge hard hitter (smells like Nirvana). Dave Grohl, in his post Nirvana days, wrote and recorded all these songs, then went out and put a band together to play them with him. They call themselves the Foo Fighters. This is a pretty good first offering. I am not familiar with any of these songs but they are not bad.

Boston debut album yesterday then this. It must be 'artists that did it all by themselves' week. Dave Grohl is amazing. But, I am just not into angst rock (although not as "angsty" as the bands later work). I hit the fast fwd button a few to many times and won't cry if I don't hear any of these songs again. Otherwise, I love Dave!

Better than expected but still poo fighters

I like Dave Grohl and this album has a wild story but for some reason I could never really get into the foo fighters, it always feels kind of uninspired and boring and just not very cool.

Classic Foo, and still some of the best rock of the last 30 years, not a mainstay for me however.

On seeing this generated, I wondered what I could possibly have to say about a Foo Fighters album. I assumed it would just be standard brand rock music for normal people. However, it turns out that this eponymous debut is more interesting than expected. It is effectively a Dave Grohl solo album, having been recorded by Grohl in just six days in 1994 as a cathartic exercise following the death of his Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain. You can hear the Nirvana adjacency in the songs and the record is considered the first post grunge album. On record industry interest in the album Grohl recruited a band to perform it live and the Foo Fighters were born. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: For All the Cows Date listened: 08/02/24

Rock comme j'aime, ça fait penser à Nirvana, à Hole... certains moments de mon adolescence

I wouldn't call this the Foo Fighters best album but that doesn't mean it isn't good and has merit in other ways. It is truly impressive that Dave Grohl basically wrote and performed the whole thing by himself before forming the full band for the tour. I would have to imagine that is was therapeutic for him following the death of Kurt Cobain and end of Nirvana. As for the music on the album, it is solid. None of the songs were particularly noteworthy but the whole album is easy to listen to and Grohl's soft voice is always paired well with the harder rock of the instruments. I would probably give this a 3.5 if half star were allowed.

Good not great.

There Is Nothing Left To Lose is a better album.

Early sounds unpolished but potential is visible. They make the jump between hard rock and more softened rock easily. That said, still not a great album compared to layer works by the group.

Really cool to hear the birth of a sound. Reading about the state he was in after Kurt's death and how this was recorded, it did make it feel like I was listening to a Phoenix rise. Would I listen to most of these songs again by choice? Probably not. But if I felt like I was in a major transition point I may put this album in as the soundtrack to that.

Solid debut. But I never got into an entire FF album.

It's weird this is the Foo Fighters album they picked for this list as they have better albums in my opinion. The other day I was talking to an internet buddy about why I don't like the Foo Fighters a ton (they sound like a generic rock band) and he made a good point- they sound like that because their sound has been copied so much it's now generic. Anyway, decent album, not their best. Band has been ruined for me because of their support of some crackpot theories and organizations about AIDS.

When it comes to choruses, Dave Grohl loves nothing more than to shout & repeat them SHOUT & REPEAT THEM SHOUT & REPEAT THEM.

Not my favorite Foo Fighters.

hard to hate but hard to love

Grunge, rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

Big Me.

Listen this at 25th of January 2024

The hits are good

Pretty good, not my favourite foo fighters album but pretty good. Low 3.

Schlecht abgemischt

yeah foo fighters innit

I feel so angsty listening to this album Big Me was good on first listen, which is rare for a song

Found it somewhat boring

Remember thinking this was better when it first came out, couple of good songs on here, still way too radio friendly for me though

Did they win?

Outside of Big Me, fairly forgettable

Alone + Easy Target was good Floaty was good For All the Cows was odd but good The more "popular" songs of This is a Call and Big Me, I didn't particularly enjoy. Exhausted made me check my headphones connection...

What’s impressive and amazing about this album is that Dave Grohl created this completely on his own following the suicide of Kurt Cobain, allowing himself to move past the tragedy while also proving his skills as a songwriter in his own way. The album has some moments that are a little too aggro and of course the lyrics are mostly nonsensical, but what brightens this up and gives this life are Grohl’s multi-tracked vocals that sound like harmonies on a number of catchy choruses. Big Me has always been a favorite and I really enjoyed Floaty and For All the Cows. While it may not be a classic or even essential listening, I agree with hearing before you die this man’s truly solo effort.

I avoided this one when it was first released. I didn't appreciate Dave Grohl and was ready to move on from all things Nirvana in the wake of Cobain's suicide, which I viewed as self-indulgent. Pretty judgy. The other problem is that I didn't really like the big hit from this album, Big Me. Didn't feel original enough. So now I'm giving it another chance, mostly from a position of greatly enhanced appreciation for Grohl. It's not bad. I don't know that I'll be coming back to it. Seems too Nirvana-ish to me (esp. Alone + Easy Target). Dave came into his own in later Foo work. But this is a decent album.

There were some classic songs on this album, but I don't really enjoy listening to albums where all the songs sound the same.

Most tracks are very similar, nothing stand-out about them but can hear the beginnings of the current foo fighters sound. Weenie Beanie had a great leading riff

Good but not as good as their later stuff

Initially sounds like an extension of Nirvana, the album takes on more variation as it progresses, however it still sounds like one layer of sound when it gets fast which is not something I want to listen to again, there are some songs I would welcome hearing again.

A take I don't think I've seen: a lot of this is like a shoegaze record. It sounds like Ride. Fitting I suppose for a new frontman coming out from behind the drumkit. It's good and melodic but a wee bit MoR.

Important. Too noisy

Not a fan

I don’t think the best Foo Fighters album but they have a really high floor. Impressive that this is all Dave Grohl (plays all instruments). Maybe I’m just older and lamer or maybe it’s because rock music is so different now but FF seemed kinda generic and boring in the mid/late nineties but they sound awesome to me now. High 3 stars

Huh. Not sure why this is an album I have to listen to before I die. Kinda generic 90s post-grunge (whatever the hell that means), though there are some pretty good songs on this record. And even if I think it's kinda generic, Dave Grohl is still a cool dude.

Mi aspettavo di meglio

This one’s ok. In the first half it’s cookie-cutter bland rock music, but it gets better near the end of the second half. I don’t want to have to sit through the first half to get to that point though. It’s just meh.

I don't understand why this is here, it's not even close to their best work and there aren't a great deal of standout tracks. Even those that have become FF staples aren't memorable, this strikes me as the author being a bit 'did you listen to them way back when tho?' I'll give it a 3 because it's not bad and it's the Foos, but come on now.

The debut album of Foo Fighters is essentially dave grohls album. He recorded it all by himself, which is very impressive. It sounds raw and unfiltered, while still sounding like later Foo Fighter albums. There aren't as many recognizable songs on here. But for a debut album it is really solid.

Great debut album. Several massive hits. Falls off a bit in the second half. Starts to sound all alike. 3.50

Liker foo fighters veldig godt, men dette er et helt ok+ album

I'm a big Foo Fighters fan but their debut entry is pretty mediocre all around. They hadnt locked in their sound just yet.

The Foo Fighters are just fine! Big Me is a pretty great tune. The rest all just blurred together

Liked it, also this cover art next to the coldplay album above is kinda funny, very serendipity

Likes: This is a Call, Big Me, For the Cows Dislike: Watershed, Exhausted

If Im being brutally honest, its a bit hit and miss

Never listened to a Foo album before. Despite loving Nirvana's output, the pseudo-follow-up band never grabbed my attention. This debut is enjoyable, but doesn't hold my attention. Would be curious to check out their following work.

When the foo is fighting

I liked this. Haven't listened to a ton of grunge, but I have liked what I've heard of it. I'd do 3.5 if I could

(I love nirvana). Good first one, 3,5.

A decent alternative album. While all the songs were pleasing to listen to, none of them stood out. I’d listen again

first time listening to this one. solid album but by far it is not the best foo fighters album

First time listener to this record. Obviously know some of the tracks, but it's definitely a sold album overall. Favourite tracks: This Is a Call, Big Me, Good Grief, Floaty, Exhausted.

Not so interesting

These guys definitely set the tone. Not my favorite but I get it.

Easy. Weichgespültes Nirvana

Fine album, nothing special. May listen again for a better experience

I can hear how it's a demo, or how Dave Grohl thought of it as a collection of ideas. Good ideas.

Never listened to much beyond the radio hits. This was fine, but not great.

A favorite from back in the day. Strong front half of the album fizzles out during the latter half. Favorites are Floaty, This is A Call, and Big Me.

Likable, but Foo Fighters have always felt like the free 30 day trial before signing up for full time rock music.

Foo Fighters has some good songs, but never really liked them that much for whatever reason. I definitely think there are albums that contain much better songs than this, so this is by no means their top stuff. The first half is pretty decent, but second half drags it down quite a bit with 'Weenie Beenie' being the low point.

4/12, 33%

Pleasant rock music to listen to. I was not overwhelmed, maybe it's too soft for my taste.

not for me if im being real

Meh. Never liked Foo Fighters,

I guess I'm not a Foo Fighters fan. No problem, but nothing to write home about. Neutral.

Very nice. Not my favourite of the Foo Fighters albums, but very mucj still carries that essence right from the get-go. I'll Stick Around was my top pick from the album. 3.5.

telling everyone they made this one for kurt cobain bc i would be pissing off dave grohl in spirit

pretty good, lots of songs sounded similar

Due to my age this is a very familiar album. While I can hear some shortcomings, it's put together by someone who was already familiar with the types of sound, subject matter and attention span of the target audience.

I can tell that real skill went into this, but it's just not really for me.

A solid alt rock album. Enjoyed it more than a lot of their later material.

I always thought Foo Fighters a generic rock band, like Nickelback. I still kind of think that. I had higher hopes after the first track which I liked, but nothing else was as good. Average rock album.

Good mix of style throughout to keep the ears engaged. I really like the drums on this album, a little more forward and punchy, which is good because the guitar can be a bit grating on some tracks. Best Song(s): This Is a Call, Big Me, Floaty Listen Again: Yes

Dad rock

Some tracks good but mostly just Dave trying to be Nirvana

Some good stylistic variety

Contemplative, chill. Loved "Exhausted" because that's how I'm feeling lately.

been there done that. a goodun

Although a solid album, nothing jumps out at you as brilliant. Not on my relisten list

I love Foo fighters, but this is definitely not the strongest album. First half is hetter than the second Still really good with some amazing songs and a show for what's to come for Foo fighters.

White noise rock

Dave Grohl in the mix of grunge/post grunge rock n roll releases his first album without Kurt and Kris of Nirvana. Definitely a walk on the wild side and definitely not Nirvana. Dave shows his playful side up front and still deep pain between the lyrics with the tragic death of Cobain. This is a good debut album letting you know that there are greater things ahead.

Uninspiring

The artist gives a noteworthy take on grunge though atypical chord progressions, odd-bar phrases, and injections of folk and pop-rock. Form and production are solid. I feel there were missed opportunities for the use of harmony and white space. The backdrop of cleanly-distorted guitar leaves enough for the vocals and drums but little room for more. Some songs really stand out while the rest blend together. Not a masterpiece, but a satisfying debut and promotion of the artist's talent as a solo musician.

Not a terrible band by any stretch. But a weirdly overrated band. While truly iconic bands like jethro tull are not in the rock and roll hall of fame the foo fighters get in on the year of qualification. Ok the rrhof is a steaming pile of garbage and always has been but what is it about the foo fighters? Certainly Dave grohll is considered one of the nicest guys in rock, but is rock ab oh t nice guys? Which brings me to this. Solid songs. No real standout or classics. An album that left little impact on the world. Again let me reiterate - this is not a bad band. Well played. The songs are above competent. But not like listening to say the white stripes (seven nation army is the type of song Dave grohl wishes he could write). Of course the elephant in the room is not jack white but Kurt cobain, or rather nirvana who did change the world. I suspect the foo fighters would have been successful if nirvana had never existed. Even as successful as they got. But they wouldn’t have been feted in the way they have been. Which leads me back to this. More an artifact of what happened than any important document that should go on a list of important albums I didn’t and don’t hate this. And it’s unfair to expect that any follow up to nirvana (or at least any project after nirvana) would have the same type of impact. Did I enjoy this? Yes. Do I think it should be on this type of list? I’m not sure. But I’m tending to no. 2.5 rounded up.

I wasn’t familiar with this album, or any of these tunes. I’ve listened to it just once. It’s an interesting listen. The content’s diverse enough to keep it interesting. Weenie Beenie couldn’t be more different than For All The Cows. I really like the noisy Wattershed. And I love the 2-minute Big Me, which sounds so much like a 60’s pop song. Alone + Easy Target sounds a lot like REM to me. In fact there’s not much here that reminds me of Nirvana. Amazing that Grohl did it all by himself. Obviously a big talent.

It's another one of those albums where there's nothing offensively bad about it, but it's hard to find reasons to praise it either. I've heard this before a while ago but remembered nothing (not surprising). Was hoping since this was their first album that it might be a bit more rough around the edges, and it is...a little bit. Not enough to actually make it interesting though. But there are some decent songs and performances on here, overall it's just pretty plain rock though.

I have never cared much to listen to Foo Fighters, despite actually seeing them live 20 years ago. Dave Grohl just seems like a dork. This album is cool, it kind of feels more like a demo, which I guess isn't surprising given how it was recorded and everything. Nice enough to listen to, hopefully there aren't any more Foo Fighters albums on this list, but I'm sure there are.

Mad respect to Dave for writing every song and playing every instrument during recording; Paul McCartney level stuff. Overall the album good, not great. Big Me is my favorite.

The death of Kurt Cobain in 1994 also signaled the death of grunge. While there was still a small well of grunge albums left for the decade, most everyone knew to pack it in. The Foo Fighters' self-titled album would be first to declare the post-grunge sound for rock. And it was pretty good. Dave Grohl, drummer for Cobain's band Nirvana, would be deeply affected by Cobain's passing. After a period of stagnation for Grohl, it would be Mike Watt (formally of the Minutemen) who would help Grohl get back in the saddle by recording drums for Watt's solo release. This inspired Grohl to take his collection of written songs to the studio and lay down his own tracks. The result is a self-titled album for a pseudonym band name. Capitol liked it, Grohl signed a deal, band members were recruited, and the rest is history. It's hard not to compare it to Nirvana's back catalogue. Given that Grohl was a part of Nirvana when he wrote many of these song, it makes sense that it would take some inspiration from Cobain's songwriting. It has a lot of the dynamic peaks and valleys similar to Nirvana, albeit cleaned up a bit. What makes the Foo Fighters distinctly post-grunge is the more conventional appeal; catchier hooks and cleaner production allowed for a more mainstream appeal that radio stations would appreciate going into the new millennium. Grohl's song would still hit pretty hard and would suite a more alt rock sound. The Foo Fighters debut, as a whole, lacks many standouts. This Is a Call and Big Me have stood on their own to this day, but the rest of the album would fail to make much of an impact.

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I love this one, it’s so simple and understated! Arguably the best introduction to a band before they later tested the sound of what they wanted to achieve Favourite song: Track 3 - Big Me

alright, it was my first listening this album and it was a great experience although it wasn't my favorite kind of music.

I'm not a big foo fighters fan, but I liked this album. I remeber liking it too in 1995 as I was a big Nirvana fan and was interested in everything related to the band. Actually, a track like Alone+Easy Target sounds a lot like his former band. Dave Grohl is one talented dude. 7/10

There's some good songs on here, "Big Me" is a classic of course, but I'm not huge on Dave Grohl's voice, unfortunately.

Significant as Dave Grohl’s first post-Nirvana project (and entirely self-produced), but perhaps clinging to much to the musical identity of his former band. The Colour and the Shape would have been a better choice for this list-Everlong alone justifies that.

unremarkable idk!!

Want to give a four as it’s slightly better than other album a I have a three top but it’s getting a three

A couple of standouts here but the rest is a bit dull. Foo Fighters dull is quite listenable though

I mean, it’s a good album, but the singles are loaded up front and the following two are like this but even better

Not the best Foo Fighters album. It's like Dave Grohl was warming up with this one before releasing "The Colour and the Shape" which is much better. Their debut album is missing almost all the Foo Fighters band members as well. Didn't expect this to be on the 1001 list. It's alright but nothing more.

A nice medium between grunge and alt rock. Manages to be both heavy and upbeat Solid but not groundbreaking

Its most amazing accomplishment is what it is and not as much the music is exceptional. A drummer from an incredibly popular band hunkers down and puts together an album entirely on his own. It's pretty straightforward rock, the first 3 songs are strong, though I also enjoyed Oh George. The rest is fine but doesn't stand out too much.

The 1001 Albums Challenge - Day 109  Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters I purposedly never gave Foo Fighters the time of day. When this album came out we were at the peak of what I call the CD era: CDs replaced vinyl and tapes, and seemingly they were quite affordable; I couldn't tell which was the cause or the effect, but I noticed that by that time every single band seemed to find record deals very easily, and they were putting out lots of interminable albums that couldn't fit in the old 46 or 60 minutes tapes, 90 minutes tapes were too long for one album and too short for two, besides the fact that I never really liked the 90 minutes format; some of those bands were incredibly exceptional; most of them sounded like they were ripping somebody else off; there was a lot of experimentation, some of it compelling, some of it sounded like the artist was trying to be weird for the sake of being weird. And don't start me with the nu-metal that was just around the corner! Every single week we were greeted with a new nu-metal band, so much so that soon enough the genre wasn't "nu" anymore. Not that it ever was, anyhow. The dawn of grunge seemed desolate. I never liked Dave Grohl, even as a person. I mean, I never was a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain fanboy but I liked some of their output; Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters seemed to me a hypocritical attempt at capitalizing on Cobain's sad end; I wasn't disgusted by the idea but it did seem to be something of bad taste to younger me. The fact that he later became increasingly popular and ubiquitous didn't help; at one point you couldn't watch a music documentary without walking on him sooner or later. Same goes for Lars from Metallica but that's another story.  But!  I am glad that I got the Foo Fighters debut from the challenge, I really listened to it while trying to keep an open mind and I can say that I didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would. It does feel like trying to revive a genre that was bound to its own end. This Is a Call really sounds like a good Nirvana outtake and he seems to be wanting to sound like Cobain. Same goes for Alone + Easy Target a few songs later. The second song, I'll Stick Around, somehow goes in a different direction; where Nirvana was about anger, there is a form of enthusiasm in Foo Fighters, so that there is a distinction. Big Me has a Beatles-y thing going on. Floaty is exactly what the title says, with some shoegaze thrown in it. Weenie Beenie goes back to the hardcore roots. Kind of Meat Puppets country thing in For All The Cows.  All in all I enjoyed this, but I am not sure I will be going back to it  Oh, it's 44 minutes long! I could tape this thing! Oh, hold on...

Good album but didn't love every song.

Well, it's not Nirvana which is a quick win. I suppose it's inevitable yet also unfair to make the comparison so getting it out of the way ... I enjoy everything about Dave Grohl's songwriting, voice, and guitar playing far more than Kurt's. There's a strong sense of melody that Dave had/has that permeates the songs. I hadn't heard this album in at least 20 years and it's interesting to hear the evolution in his music; ok it's not progressive by any means but this early raw listen (it's all Grohl) is just that - not nearly as produced and slick as his/their later work. I suppose that's to the listener whether they like it or not - as someone who almost actively hates the intentionally lo-fi/indie aesthetic that was somehow catching fire around this time, I do prefer the sound of the later songs. But it's also kinda undeniable that some things were lost as well - a friend and I years ago coined the "Foo Fraction" - wherein each new FF release would have some killer single and we'd rush out and grab the album only to be somewhat disappointed in that much of the album/s was filler. I feel like for the most part I'm enjoying these songs on the whole more than later albums; another interesting aspect is that it's clear Dave had so relatively little confidence in his voice; much less-aggressive than in later years. And I think I like this version of him better (not a fan of yell/scream-singing). "Big Me" - holy hell the memories of this video; suddenly I'm in my early 20s again. personal favourite: "Floaty" ...mmm those major7ths. Sum: Definitely sounds like a well-crafted demo; i.e. not lo-fi enough to be annoying and well-conceived enough to be a group of catchy songs. Negative is that overall it's a bit too thrashy (often countered nicely by mellow-Dave-voice). Not sure it's anything approaching a favourite but I'm probably not turning it off if it comes on. 7/10 3 stars.

Big Me is a great song! Obviously an important record... very cool that he was recording this while in Nirvana... I'm not sure if that makes it one of the 1001 I need to listen to. And I love Dave Grohl, and Nirvana, and Foo Fighters is a great band. Just saying... this is noteworthy but not must-listen IMO. OK Floaty is cool! Shoegazy kind of thing going on. Ok I like this. I'm going with a 3. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Lyrics are scattered, hard to connect and find meaning in them. Makes some sense when you assume they are about depression and drugs. Very repetitive as well but some good nuggets of poetry. Love the grunge sound of the album.

Interesting variation between songs, some more upbeat, some dark and artsy. Obviously clear Nirvana inspiration. Deep edgy lyrics masked by what could be pop songs. Doesn’t quite hit like Nirvana, but some memorable songs on here.

Solid album that showed everyone Dave Grohl was nowhere near finished after Nirvana.

This is their first album. Still pretty good but imo not their best one. However, I’ll take anything by the foo fighters.

Foo Fighters is not a great album because it's lyrics (it's not). Foo Fighters is not a great album because it's music (it's not). It's an amazing testament of what grief and how we process it turns shit into gold. I'm not a fan of the Foo and am kind of annoyed at how sainted Dave Growl became like he's the only person capable of cheerleading rock, but for this album, he did good. 3.5/5.

Pretty solid grungy rock. I’m impressed that it’s a one man show as I would not have guessed that from the sound. Starts out strong before settling into a rut of just OK. I would throw it on again. Best song: This is a Call

This is honestly a solid debut album for Grohl. There’s a vision there that comes across really well. The bummer is that this helped perpetuate a middle of the road 90s rock sound that quickly became unbearable. And Foo Fighters would never really evolve their sound beyond heavy riff + yelling vocals.

to be honest i'm just not sure that i can bring myself to care enough about this record because barely anything about it sticks with me. i think of myself as a huge alt-rock guy. but something about the foo just doesn't really do it for me. no offense, dave Favorite Tracks: Alone + Easy Target 3/5

Dave Grohl is a mench . I like a few of the songs on this but overall not so much my jam.

Good first album. Falls into the category of first couple of songs are great and then it peters out.

Strong start that turns generic...

It's fine but Color and Shape is way better which means it probably isn't on the list.

It’s quite impressive that Dave Grohl wrote and performed all of the music for this album. I would consider myself a fan of the Foo Fighters. They have put out a ton of music so some of it does sound similar, but they have evolved over the years. This album isn’t my favorite but it has some good songs on it. Weenie beenie was abrasive to the point I had to skip it.

to be honest i'm just not sure that i can bring myself to care enough about this record because barely anything about it sticks with me. i think of myself as a huge alt-rock guy. but something about the foo just doesn't really do it for me. no offense, dave Favorite Tracks: Alone + Easy Target 3/5

ogni canzone suona come le altre canzoni

Good Foo Fighters album. 3/5

Fuck yeah, never listened to this and surprised that their debut actually came out in '95, I always imagine them as starting on the turn of the millennium.

Generic grunge/alt-rock album from ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. It is nothing outstanding but it was an ok listen overall.

I’m not much of a Foo Fighters fan, but this was more enjoyable than I expected. Just a tight 45 minutes of rock, before Dave Grohl lost some of his bite. The “generic” critique is more appropriate for later Foos, but I think this is still close enough to the Nirvana days that makes it worth a listen. It gets brought up every time I see this album discussed, but it is impressive that Dave Grohl played and sang everything on this album. Solid all around.

Always love a good Foo Fighters album and here we are getting the debut. While this doesn't reach the heights of some of their later albums, this one still rocks, especially since it came out in 1995. Probably would have felt like a fresh sound back then.

The first album by the Foo Fighters, just a year after Kurt Cobain's death. Unsurprising, then, that this mostly sounds like Nirvana. I've maybe heard a track or two on this in passing, but there's not much recognizable. The Foo Fighters would go on to become this standard or staple in rock; not entirely sure why that has persisted so long, but they've got undeniable hits. None of those hits are here though. It's a decent album, but I don't think it's really essential. Their second album better be on this list, that's all I'm saying. Favorite tracks: I'll Stick Around, For All the Cows. Album art: It's a space gun, like a blaster out of Star Wars. Apparently this offended people because of Kurt Cobain's death? If I remember correctly, he used a shotgun, not Han Solo's sidearm. 3/5

Not a bad album especially considering foo fighters at this point was just Dave Grohl but most definitely no the best foo fighters album

Grunge, rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

En lo personal no amo todas las canciones ruidosas, pero unas me hicieron sentir en una escena donde el personaje va caminando por la calle y hay un desastre alrededor, añadí varias canciones a mi playlist

Couple good songs, none of them super amazing to me.

If this was Cold Stone Creamery, this album would be a solid “Like It.” Not quite a “Love It” and pretty far from “Gotta Have It.” But I like it. 🍨

Solid indie rock album from a mid 2000s staple

Not really a fan of Foo Fighters but this ay bad. I was exhausted by that note.

It often sounds like "generic rock" but there's some very solid songs on here. I also like the story behind the album. 3.5/5

De Foo Fighters op z'n puurst. Iets te intens voor mij persoonlijk, maar rocken kunnen ze zeker.

Stoked was an understatement when I saw this album pop up! Although it’s not my favourite Foos album, there is something to be said about Dave Grohls musical genius, and the fact that this is ALL him!! All the instruments, all the singing and writing…he is a so important to our generation of music. It only gets better from this album on…. Listen again: Absolutely Purchase for my collection: Maybe, if it was cheap. Favourite Song: For All The Cows, but Alone and Easy Target comes close as an homage to the first Big Shiny Tunes album which was pretty much my intro to mainstream rock. Worst Song: Exhausted- the static sound drives me nuts

I've always found them a bit dull, some good songs here and there but I just don't know why they are regarded as being great

Pop delights.

Not nearly the classic its follow up is. Still. You can hear the grumblings of a change in sound as far as alternative music. Everything here is decent to good with a monster early track at the center as it’s single.

A very classic 90s rock album. Almost sounds proto-Foo Fighters now, as I feel like they matured a lot after this.

Big Me.

Litt kjedelig

Good but not great.

Starts with 3 BANGERS! This Nirvana demo is dope! He's really trying to find himself and his sound, it's a solid record and a sign of what's to come but feels more like a demo than a complete album. More like an EP with lots of filler

I love FF, but I think this should be considered as a demo, not an album. it is noisy and i have the feeling that it is not finished. (Almost) all the other FF albums are better.

While I loved Nirvana, I never really got into Foo Fighters. The hits are fun, but I've never really sat with the albums. This one was totally ok, not amazing, but fine. Glad Dave got out of his funk. Later material seems much better.

good, very rock, might have to circle back

rock music has never been my thing (at least in the traditional sense — art rock, chamber rock, and psychedelic rock have consistently displayed the ability to move me with their simultaneous scale and intimacy). Foo Fighters’ self titled debut, though richly crafted, does not at current seem to be the pure rock album to assuage (??) my predispositions (??). formed following the suicide of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, Foo Fighters (the work of fellow Nirvana colleague Dave Grohl) doesn’t manage to sustain the intensity or inventiveness of the works that birthed it, but is still something fairly neat all on its own. it aspires for a similar grunge leaning sound that turned Nirvana into a beast, but is also performed with a certain restrain that leaves its bite feeling weak. Grohl evokes great emotion with his voice though, and there are true gems to be found here: “Floaty” sounds like the sort of pop-rock that many a teenage girl-next-door would wield to masterful effect, and “Big Me” is rich with enough heart. not a record i see myself returning to much, but a good enough one nonetheless.

This was good fun when it came out, though it's pretty much textbook inessential, doesn't belong in this list, that's for sure. One or two genuinely great songs dotted around the Foos' career (maybe not on this one though) , and Dave seems a lovely bloke. Nice to get the lyrics sheet and have it confirmed after this time that the lyrics to This is a Call are a completely random list of non-sequiters. Foo Fighters albums just got more and more inessential, but not bad, as they went along. They hit on that formula early and by god they opened the factory. Because of that, and this being the height of my Nirvana-fandom, this is the Foo Fighters album I'm fondest of. It also sounds the most like Nirvana (Easy Target, Weenie Beanie), which makes sense since most of the tracks were written back then. For All the Cows sounds like Green Day. But ultimately, it's still just good to average, perfectly serviceable rock. And when In Utero comes around it's clearly getting 5 stars, so as someone who likes this, you have to consider - is it really just one star better than this? No. Faves - X-Static, This is a Call, Alone + Easy Target.

Favourite song: Alone + Easy Target

Cool to hear what could've come from nirvana next, but sad to know it's missing someone. Good stuff, some songs gave that nirvana sound, while others showed a new chapter of what would become foo fighters sound with Dave at the helm. Some songs sound flat. Would love a remastere

I admire the origin story of this, Grohl working in relative secret to get out of the shadow of Cobain's tragic end. The product is very competent rock. The weaker point is the lyrics, muddy both in delivery (overlayered and effects-laden as they are) and content. I think later works from this band are stronger.

Foo Fighters are solid, dependable and you know just what you’re going to get. I admire what’s been done here and I like FF in general is long as there isn’t too much exposure. I think if I went to a gig I would just end up being bored. I can’t listen to a whole album without just thinking it’s a bit samey. Solid, dependable samey… and totally listenable, but better in small doses. This is no detraction from Dave Grohl being the nicest man in rock.

Not the best Foo Fighters album, still ok.

Not my favourite Foo’s album. Has some moments of brilliance in it tho . Really made a mark on me in 95 and is always on these ‘greatest albums lists’ . It’s a 3.5 star for me 👌🏼

Just a good album. Nothing special

3 Classic

Album is obviously good, but I felt a little let down by it too. There wasn't that epic climax anywhere that I'm used to with the Foo Fighters. Favorite track: Floaty

Some fun rock. Not much to say. Not any classic tracks

Catchy, but I always thought that the Foo Fighters were the more radio-friendly Dad rock devolution of grunge. I also prefer Dave Grohl's drumming to his singing.

bien qsy 7/10

Pretty decent album for a first album, it gives a taste of their style but definitely prefer the more evolved Foo Fighters sound

I like the foo fighters, album as a whole was alright.

This was fine, I really enjoyed the last song on the album, but besides that I didn't really get too much out of this. I would have much rather have just listened to Nirvana instead

Sounds easy listening, some great songs, not their best albumn, but enjoyable nonetheless.

A great album but far from their best work in my opinion

Cool guys, good music, pretty solid record.

Meh, it's ok

Classic 90s early Foos

Was ready to really not like this. Grunge is my least favorite of the Rock sub genres, this is not the best few years for rock music, and also the Foo Fighters are a bunch of gross AIDs deniers. But it's actually a pretty great listen. Some of those riffs really rip, and the driving beats are catchy throughout. I suppose my qualms, balanced out with my pleasant surprise and enjoyment, equals out to a three. I could go 4 on some individual tracks, but overall 3.

Good debut record but I prefer the next 2 albums. First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: For All The Cows, Rating: 3/5

I knew Grohl was Nirvana's drummer. Another drummer who transitions to lead singer in a financially successful way. Kinda like Phil Collins. Sorry Dave. lol Kurt Cobain thought Nevermind was a little too poppy so I get why Grohl did not want to slide a song like "Big Me" on the table in his Nirvana days. The volume is turned up dramatically once they get the hits out of the way. Overall the album is a bit of a "So what?"

Pretty good aggressive rock

3.5/5. Pretty good considering one person did everything. I do think some of the songs can be a little plain, but others make up for it. Overall, this album is above average.

This was a nice Foo fighters album. Nothing exceptional, but also nothing bad.

Feels like their practice album. The general FF sound is there but without the strong riffs on the later albums. Still a nice background album

Sadly not the best Foo Fighters album, hoping for a better album later

My guess is the editors said "hey we should put that really good Foo Fighters record on here. What was the name of it? I think it was their first record." And that's how this record accidentally ended up on this list.

Foo Fighters's debut album is not near a masterpiece, but it's still enjoyable. It tells a story where Dave Grohl is at after leaving Nirvana. It's also my first time see this side of story about Kurt Cobain, and it's about his girlfriend, Courtney, who may be the reason why Kurt was addicted to drugs. Some of the songs sound like Nirvana a lot lol, not that I'm surprised. It's not as hard-hitting as Nirvana though sadly, so I don't understand why would I listen to this when I can just bump In Utero or Nevermind. But if you want to listen to 90's rock album, this one is definitely what a 90's rock album sounds like.

Kinda raw
