A brilliant live album.
Fantastic, obviously. Think this might've been the first country album I listened to in full.
Great live album, unique in the way the energy comes out.
Just a raucus good time
initial thoughts: even the songs I didn’t love were great. I love the interactive aspect of this album fav off album: I Still Miss Someone or Cocaine Blues
yeeha
Perfect live performance and connection to a crowd. Each song is specifically selected for the crowd and performed with such care and passion as Cash demonstrates a sense of compassion as he believed in redemption for all. Produced really well and sounds clear.
fucking classic.
Great, iconic album.
Another classic and iconic performance by Cash.
Great stuff
Good live album. Some funny moments especially with the water. Fav 25 minutes
Really enjoyed this album. Truly Johnny Cash in every aspect.

Wow this has sooo much energy - I love it! The 25 minutes to go song was moving - especially if anyone on death row was attending that concert. What a great listen.
3.7 + A fun palate cleanser. Cash sounds loose and intimate, cracking jokes with the audience often at the expense of the prison administration. June Carter sounds sassy on "Jackson." Apparently the crowd noises were added in post-production (Folsom prison required silence of the inmates), which was a huge letdown when I first learned of it. But now I think the crowd sounds are so vital to the record that I can no longer imagine it without the audience as a central performer.
I was ready to write this off as another one of those albums that wouldn't live up to the hype... but the cool factor is undeniable. Probably a 4.5.
I hate live albums, but there are always exceptions to the rules. Exception: Johnny fucking Cash. It was a great idea that was executed brilliantly. Felt like a prisoner by the end of it, but that was the point right?
Western folk meets bluegrass rock, creating 'At Folsom Prison' with Johnny Cash's unique panache. The album is quite streamlined and organized, as its live quality brings Cash's distinctive baritone vocals to the foreground. An inviting listen of an album that ultimately enkindles themes of life; that of Cash's personal experiences.
Great genuine, authentic outlaw country - I love it. My top pick is the opening track, but I also like 'Jackson', and 'Green, Green Grass of Home'. Loved the audience interactions - "This show is being recorded for an album release on Columbia Records, and you can't say 'hell' or 'shit' or anything like that."
Classic
Buen disco!
The prison crowd and Cash's relatable lyrics make for a really good listen if you're a fan
Classic Cash. If you only listen to one of his albums, it has to be this one.
Assez calme mais quand même joyeux. Bien aimé!
A fun live album. Good range of songs.
Épico
Yeah good that
This is a historic album that even folks who are fairly music ignorant know about. Folsom Prison Blues is iconic, and I got a kick out of 25 Minutes to Go. Johnny isn't really my cup of tea, but it was still a pleasure to give this album a total listen.
Loved it. The best part of the record is hearing the prisoners constant presence in the background
Historia de la música
Nice
A good live country album with a great atmosphere with the prison setting. Favorites: Folsom Prison Blues, Cochise Blues, 25 Minutes to Go
“At Folsom Prison” starts off slow, but eventually hits its stride and takes a whole prison along on the ride. Can’t really remember how it compares to Cash’s other live prison album, but I know they both make for powerful statements.
This album defines outlaw country for me. Johnny Cash is known for being a hardened badass, and I think it traces back to this album. He doesn’t just come off as tough, but rather he seems to take it a step further. It feels as if he is firmly Team Inmate. Of course inmates are people too, and deserve to be treated as such. I admire that he played Greystone Chapel, a song written by inmate Glen Sherley. The song is good regardless who wrote it, but Cash including it shows another side of an inmate capable of something positive. I had not realized that Shel Silverstein wrote 25 Minutes To Go, which fits with both his humor and Johnny Cash’s empathetic embrace of the outlaw inmates. A couple song highlights for me are Jackson, Folsom Prison Blues, and I Still Miss Someone. My one negative is that there are too many slow songs on the whole. I enjoy the slow songs individually, but overall it’s too much.
I like the upbeat songs. The slower ones like I Still Miss Someone sound like he's singing hymns to me. Fun album.
Solid country album. Usually don’t prefer live albums but given the theme of the album and the setting it does fit. There are times where the live interruptions do take away from the songs. However this album has many classic hits and is classic Cash. 7.7/10
I like it. Great voice, charismatic. Basic musically, but interesting nonetheless
Hard nosed country songs of loss and longing and love, and fighting and jail and oppression - perfectly judged, heartfelt performances, finishing with a wonderful version of Greystone Chapel, which was written by Glen Sherley, who was an inmate at Folsom. Glen had a hard knock life - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Sherley 4 stars
Loved this. It takes a special artist to bring joy and humour to prison environment.
enjoyed it - made me think about rehabilitation v punishment
Pretty cool album. I think a little better than the other prison album of his "At San Quentin". Still, not a big fan of live albums in general. Songs are good, but live versions of songs when you're not actually there in person to hear them lack something. 3.5 stars.
Great album, have listened several times. Love the extra conversations with audience and announcements for inmates or requests for water. Nice performances with June Carter.
first Johnny album that I listen very nice
Classic
Album so fun it's criminal
I’m not a huge fan of the music, but I love the album. There’s just something about singing about shooting someone to a crowd of dangerous criminals.
I loved this - not just because of the music but the atmosphere and picturing the setting. I think I was aware of this occurence, Cash playing in a prison but had never listened to the recording properly. Its excellent.
This is an excellent album. Johnny Cash is fantastic.
This was fun, his lyrics are great.
Listened to this many times before, pretty uncritically. This time around wrestling a little with how great it is. Am I overrating it because of the whole legend and lore aspect? It certainly hits some heights, it also is certainly sloppy as hell at times, but then again that’s a live album.
johnny being johnny fucking love live at folsom prison cocaine blues and long black veil are a couple faves
- The crowd work of Johnny Cash is second to none - His live performance is on par with all of his studio recordings - There is a reason he's a legend and this is a prime example
ITS THE CASH MAN
Great set of songs to be relevant to the unique audience, and the storytelling (even if by the nature of the music or when borrowed) is excellent throughout. The live element benefits the recording, and Johnny's interactions and tangible rapport with the inmates make it somehow fun. Great mini set of lighter relief songs on the middle, highlighted by Jackson.
Gosh I'm usually kind of over Johnny Cash's main music, it's good but it's fawned over so much and if I don't hear Ring of Fire ever again I wouldn't be upset. But listening to this, gosh dang is it good. Gosh.
I like Johnny cash but not listened to the whole of this album before. Loved his interaction with his audience. He sounds just as good live as in the studio.
Great performance from a legend.
Simply brilliant show. I love the way Johnny Cash sings and talks to the audience. (8/10) Favorite Tracks: 25 Minutes to Go, Jackson, Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog
i wonder if johnny cash dropped the soap?
It felt weird listening to this. Here’s Cash, famous, singing to the inmates about their troubles. Joking about being hanged and murdering your wife and that sort of stuff. The cheers from the crowd. The songs written by inmates. I can barely get bored of the tunes being so similar because this performance isn’t about the music, it’s about the event, and it’s very thought provoking. Cash has a voice like melted dark chocolate in a huge cup and his stage presence makes him one of the only celebrity singers I could imagine a prison audience not being completely disillusioned by. I thought it was a very interesting album, but not exactly "fun" to listen to.
Could not believe it was actually recorded in a prison, sure enough it is and the resulting atmosphere is quite something
The songs are kinda cheesy and outdated but the recording is slick as and proves why Cash was a master of his craft. Also the banter between songs is cool to hear, this dude is charismatic as all hell.
Great album, the songs are great and johnny’s voice sounds is really relaxing, having it recorded live makes it feel that much better with the crowd interactions
Good music , great live performance and cool interaction with the audience
classic
Given the circumstances behind the recording, the quality isn’t terrible. Not a huge country fan, but old school country has better depth and meaning to lyrics. Some of the cheering feels forced and noted that it was added in post. Apparently the inmates were scared to cheer or clap, and Johnny actually asks during one song “did someone just clap?” At which point the fake applause queues in. Adding applause gives the album a fake feel and for a live album almost discredits it.
Historic, but not to my taste
Great audience! Song selection was great.
I think its a mix of country and blues
Much better! Most enjoyable & listenable!
Johnny Cash is a pretty funny guy which made it more enjoyable, but the music just by itself is kind of boring
Live albums :-( I really like Johnny Cash and the songs are so good that this would be an easy 5 if it were studio recordings. The live versions still get a 4 from me. But I really don't understand why anyone would prefer to listen to the live versions over studio ones.
One of the most iconic live albums and for good reason. Cash on top form.
great live album. 4.3 stars out of 5
Historic / 5
I Like it...I like it a lot. Great voice and such a unique tone. The recording is supreme too, especially for its time and place. You can close your eyes and almost imagine yourself right there. Wonderful piece of history from The Man In Black. 4 Stars!
Interesting that almost every song on this album is prison-related and dark. It wouldn't seem like prisoners would want to be reminded of their escape, but maybe it helped him connect with them. Seemed different from the San Quentin album, darker somehow.
Nice change of pace, awesome stuff
great production, sound quality...and he was awesome.
Enjoyed this and the whole premise. Top notch.
Deadly!
raw. and 25 seconds to go, at folsom, is just fuckin great. Couple of duds but just great. 8.7/10.
Liked it!
Enjoyed that. Good man.
Cash is goat
Classic. So damn good. Johnny Cash sings with such heart and has a voice like gravel running through your fingertips
Top performance
Classic prison concert from the man in black.
This album is a little less rough around the edges than the San Quentin offering. I like the song selection, he mixes the tempo up nicely, and they all, in some way, seem suited for a prision audience. I especially like the Long Black Veil and Green Green Grass of Home, which I didn’t realize was a death row song. And of course, "Flushed from the Bathroom of your Heart" is a classic. June Carter didn’t seem to be having one of her best days.
You can feel he is enjoying all the way; complicity with audience -which is in constant attention to the lyrics and the man- is almost palpable. Kind of a greatest hits enriched and improved. One of most memorable and original live records ever. 4,5
Ouuuu mama
Icon. That hard driving sound was uniquely his. While it was not a marketing playing in a prison helped brand him as a rebel and renegade
Loved it. Incredibly raw, and the setting catches the moment, artist, and songs so well.
Typical Cash album. Not big fan of his muic. I like only some specific songs, but overall liked this album. If I'll randomly stumble onto it again, I'll listen it, but won't purposefully listen to it and not on repeat obviously.
Nostalgic, reminds me of listening to music with Abe.
Already know that this is a great album. Listened to it a lot:)
God Bless Johnny Cash!
I've only heard the first track, but it's a great concept. Not something I'd always listen to, but I have a soft spot for Johnny Cash. I love that they kept all the quips and dead-space, really puts you there.
The Man in Black!
Absolutely classic, a list of best ofs for Cash coupled with the amazing dialogue between performer and prisoners.
Fav Song: Folsom Prison Blues
Nothing like this ever great songs so down to earth, gritty and real.
His songs always cheere me up. I love his tales and he‘s a great entertainer. Also, his voice is beautiful 😊.
Johnny Cash is such a badass. I enjoyed learning about Glen Sherley, the inmate who wrote the final song on the album. Best track: Folsom Prison Blues.
Great live album.
Legendary live album
Didn't listen but im sure good
Late 60s country. First effort after getting clean with help of June.
A rather enjoyable album, and in this case I like the storytelling nature of the lyrics (which I usually hate). However, the songs are overly simple and get repetitive over the course of an album. After the album, Spotify played a Glen Campbell song which was immediately leagues above in terms of quality. Edit: next up Willie Nelson, also a completely different league ... I'm recognizing a pattern here.
Recidivism would be at an all time low if we still did this
Folsom Prison Blues – Plagiarism controversy aside, this did give us one of the greatest lines Johny Cash ever wrote – “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” Dark as the Dungeon – a sad waltz, worth listening to for the interaction with the audience of convicts, instantly building a rapport. I Still Miss Someone – doesn’t quite match the version h edid with Dylan, but nice enough. Cocaine Blues – you can telll the care he took with building a set that would appeal to an audience of convicts. 25 Minutes to Go – one of Shel Silverstein’s ditties (most famous as a songwriter for A Boy Named Sue, another Cash standard, and probably the most intimidating figure ever to write a bestselling children’s book) Orange Blossom Special – another railroad song with the guitar following the rhythm of a steam engine.... unusual to hear a versio of this song without fiddle since it’s one of THE big fiddle tunes. The Long Black Veil – another “free spirit outlaw” track, again elevated a little by the interaction with the audience Send a Picture of Mother – it’s got to be admitted at this point in the album that while Johnny Cash may have been a great singer and Songwriter, his guitar playing was merely okay. Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog/Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart – variety show drivel. Jackson – fine. Give My Love to Rose – interesting to hear this early version. I Got Stripes another convict’s tale. Green, Green Grass of Home – a standard version of a country standard Greystone Chapel – nice to end with a song written in the place of performance.
I’m not a big country music fan but Jonny Cash has some great songs
pas son meilleur 3/5
I prefer old man Cash, but if I want younger cash the this is what I’d choose.
Johnny Cash had an amazing voice, a bad attitude, and a repertoire of classic, simple folk songs (and new songs written in a classic folk style). There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's solid music well performed. I did notice a few cases where phrases ran a few beats longer or short than I'd expect, but the band all followed Cash and it never became a problem. This is more important as an event than as a live album, but it's solid.
i like the instruments and the rhythm of the song the album also feels very linear and unified from song to song which is satisfying to the ear
its good for its genre but i really despise country
I love this when it's foot stomping high tempo rollicking good times. I like the lore behind it. This is far from the perfect album though, some of the mid song patter is a bit forced and the ballads drag.
I love the concept of this album, truly so cool but I don’t think the music really does it for me…
3.5 This being the second “live from prison” Cash album I’ve gotten on the list, you can see that it’s a bit of an act for Cash. He hits a lot of the same bits, a lot of the same jokes (calling out the wardens, making sure he cusses and then goes “oops I’m not supposed to cuss”), you realize it’s a bit less spontaneous than you thought. Cash is a performer. It’s a part of an act. A successful act, yes, but it’s all probably a little bit less sincere than it originally appeared. The quality of the music is still high, of course, though that last song by inmate Sherely is really cloying and stinky. Sorry, buddy!
Couple solid songs in here but overall it was too similar to each other. Maybe it was a wrong time type of thing and i would enjoy it a lot more in the future or in the right time. I could give it a second chance sometime.
I'm not big on country music, but Johnny Cash is all right.
At Folsom Prison was a decently fun listen. I listened to At San Quentin a while back and this album has very similar vibes to that one from things like Cash's general presence during these shows, the fact they came out a year apart from each other and they were also both recorded at prisons. I definitely like Cash's very non-serious presence as i could tell that he was having a pretty fun time doing these performances. The problem is though, none of these songs really stand out from each other. I think that this album is rather similar to Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner where its more so the way it comes together that makes this album enjoyable rather than any specific songs so, definitely a good listen, just not my favorite. Best Song: Green, Green Grass Of Home Worst Song: I Still Miss Someone Side note: Last Johnny Cash album which means: 1. American IV: The Man Comes Around 2. At Folsom Prison 3. At San Quentin
Enjoyed this but don't think it was needed as well as Live at San Quentin
Why was this album so wholesome
Özellikle açmam
Enjoyable, but not my style. ★★★
More of a historic artefact than an album I'd return to over and over again (and where is the line between telling someone else's story or your own?) but yeah, I don't mind this one at all.
I really did not expect to like it this much because I never listen to this kind of music. I don't know if I'm going to listen to it again but it was a good experience
The man in black standing up for the poor, the hungry and those who have served their time.
Really enjoyed this, did not know it was actually done at a prison? That's so cool, doesn't feel like something you could do today. Anyways enjoyed it a lot.
feel a strong cowboy music vibe. But unfortunately, I not enjoy with it.
“haha I just said the f word and I’m not allowed to” shut up man, outlaw my ass, give me a country artist who’s actually killed someone
We already had one Johnny Cash prison album…change the channel, Marge! I guess this has some classic bits of stage banter (“I just want to tell you this is being recorded for Columbia Records so you can’t say hell or fuck or shit or piss or tits or cocksucker or cunt or motherfucker or anything like that”). The tracklist isn’t particularly great though - no Ring Of Fire or I Walk The Line - so it does become a chore by the halfway stage. Wish an incarcerated Blues Brothers could just join the stage and liven things up with some Jailhouse Rock or Everybody Needs Somebody or something.
He sings about cocaine kind of a lot, huh I think I do like Johnny Cash. I didn't think I did for a while.
A bit samey at times but I can see how influential it must have been
It's fine, but not something I'd listen to more often. Didn't know about the voice cracks.
In the beginning, I wasn't feeling like it was my cup of tea, but as I continued listening to the album, I realised some of these songs are quite touching.
ne. also… na, gfallt ma einf nit so wirklich. vllt bin i zu müde. aber es is so bissi country? und dass es live is machts nit besser. die ruhigen lieder gfallen ma besser (zb the long black veil), aber ganz viele lieder klingen sehr gleich. bin auch grad einf mad auf men weil wtf. es is ehrlich nit wirklich so besonders. trotzdem. 3/5
Great record! What an amazing document, the crowd noises and the way Johnny communicates with them is a special thing to hear. Dropped a couple of stars cos, for me, his songs have a very same same quality to them that I don't find too engaging. Still an amazing record tho
Up there as one of the best live albums. It does live up to its reputation and solidifies Johnny as a great showman. 8/10 [KEEP]
Ikke min smag, men meget hyggeligt
JC has a fantastic voice and this is an excellent live show. That being said I don't love a lot of the songs themselves, and found the recurring themes of incarceration and capital punishment a little relentless and overbearing by the end of the record
Not a country fan, but you can’t knock this one. Enjoyed it from start to finish
I enjoyed his other prison album on here more. Not sure if it’s just because I heard that one first so the prison gimmick was newer or if I actually liked his performance better. Either way still a fun time visiting a 1960s prison. Rating: 3.4
Not for me, not so much the country aspect, but the story telling and campfire guitar. As for the music itself, definitelly good background noise. calming and nostalgic.
bastante divertido john el monedas
oh this is the song on baby mouth dreams lol. funny when he flubs during a song. extremely relaxing baritone. cocaine blues is just funny as fuck tbh reading how this was performed at a prison makes me appreciate it a lot more the long black veil is a dax song. sorry this guy is funny as fuck tbh highlights: flushed from the bathroom of your heart. give my love to rose. & the banter after the long black veil. & not to be pretentious but the speeches at the very end of the album too
pretty cool, quite same same and dated but still solid. Liked the last song would study to
It's listenable, but I don't really love it. Not my style.
Eh, I preferred his album from Live from San Quinton...
alcune belle canzoni narrative, ma complessivamente l'ho trovato un po lento, apprezzo jhonny cash
Não faz meu estilo, mas foi bacana.
Great album in particular the opening track.
Try this now but with like ASAP Rocky
Good for just chilin and listenin while doing sth else i guess.
5/10
Johnny is neither my favorite nor least favorite artist
I enjoyed this, except for the dog abuse song. I understand I'm applying contemporary principles to an era that was not so nice to pets and animals in general. I still wished for better from Johnny. Three stars instead of four
handful of my country favourites on this album
Muy bueno
it was okay
Better than his San Quentin album but wtf, how can the Man in Black only get prison records onto this list?
Folsom prison blues cocaine blues greystone chapel 25 minutes to go liked the 1st one the most, others were ok but wouldn't choose to listen too
Not massively keen but think it might just not be my thing
sorta dark topics but great delivery
- i love a live album and i have never heard an album live from a prison. sick - something about his voice works so well with this recording style/quality. and hearing the audience respond, him laugh, etc is fun - west tennessee/arkansas accents fascinate me (eg. loo-is-iana) - i have respect for this even if it isn't necessarily something i would go out of my way to listen to as an album. it has some strong tracks though and if i liked slow country more i think i would like this a lot - jackson would be fun to listen to with people - favorites: folsom prison blues, 25 minutes to go - rating: 3/5
has a nice voice but wasn't super my style 3.5/5
So cool
nice album
The usual complaint about Johnny Cash - I'd rather hear about him than from him. I really liked the speaking bits in between the songs on this, but really, the songs themselves do little for me. I've given top marks to Folsom Prison Blues, because of the iconic 'I shot a man in Reno' line, but moreso because of the sketch in I Think You Should Leave that features a version of it.
Listened in the car. Honestly after getting At San Quentin earlier this week I liked that one more. I liked the tunes, the crowd energy, and the banter more than this one. I can still only handle so much Johnny Cash in one go.
Klasika. Jeden z mála country albumov, čo si dokážem vypočuť.
Cash money
A live recording is a great way to display the power of his voice and in a prison! It’s fun to hear him break and laugh at certain moments and to hear the audience of prisoners there laughing with him. Not sure if I would consider this a must listen but it’s a great document of his music at that point in time. I see there’s another live in prison album just a year later on this list so I’m thinking there only needs to be one of those on the list. And then let’s get an earlier studio album by him on this list instead.
Suena bien para ser un vivo. La voz del cantante está buena. Las canciones me parecieron muy repetitivas.
The concept is fucking badass but the music wasn't that much
Iconic and a great vibe. Would definitely chuck on again but probably not enough songs that stick out for me
2/3. Such great energy on this album, the songs are fun to listen to, the crowd loves it, and for a live album it actually sounds good! I know Cash is a controversial figure, but he certainly seems like a cool guy on this album.
Not my thing, nothing personal
Sometimes “live” albums aren’t really live - in no way can you accuse this of not being truly live. Full of requests for water, for prisoners to go through to reception, of crowd interaction, this album is incredibly dynamic. Johnny Cash is also very easily to listen to. I’d not really been familiar with most tracks, but I still found it enjoyable to have on. Obviously, a track like the opener are standouts but I really enjoyed the silly “Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart.” I didn’t really like June Carter’s vocals, finding they didn’t really mesh well with Cash’s, so I’d found myself pondering that I preferred Reese Witherspoon singing “Jackson”.
Johnny Cash really does find himself very funny doesn't he? I liked the guitar, thought the vocal performance was variable and the lyrical content was (in some cases) questionable. The actual set up of the live album was absolutely fascinating though, and it likely deserves it's place on the list solely on principle. Ultimately while I quite enjoyed listening to it, I can't see me ever listening to it again, but would happily listen to a studio album. It would be a 2.5, but: 3/5 for the sheer ballsiness of the idea.
Maybe it seemed edgy at the time, seems a bit awkward now. Cash seemed to struggle a bit vocally.
2026.03.18
maybe more important or iconic than great, but a solid representation of Cash in the late 60s. happy to revisit it. top track: Long Black Veil
It's all fine, but won't listen to this again
I really like one Johnny Cash song, but after listening to a few in a row I get bored. They're all the same song dammit! He's charming, human, and the circumstances of the album make it more engaging and poignant. The lyrics are nice and I'm sure they make great singalongs
Pretty good for a genre I don't often listen to
I'm not much of a johnny cash listener, but this was an extremely good live performance.
aham
Folsom Prison Blues is an awesome track, the rest of the album (or his other songs for that matter) I find boring and uninteresting. Oh, Jackson with June Carter is fun, too.
Some of these old school blues lyrics sound a bit silly, listening today. But still a good listen.
I loved the live audience and his interactions with them, and the lyricism is so raw. Bit old timey for me though.
Country, 1968 -> 3
Although it’s not my style of music, Johnny Cash has a lot of talent.
Classic, probably the only country I’ll ever listen to
Me entretuvo. Y suma vibras la prisión.
It's a fun listen. The title track is iconic and one of my favorites. I've got nothing but respect for Cash and I enjoyed the album listening experience but it's unlikely that I'd listen to any one song on its own (except, of course, Folsom Prison Blues)
Un disco muy interesante. Me gusto.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
live album released May 1968, country, not my preference but it was fun, not bad
While I can respect that At Folsom Prisom ultimately put Johnny Cash back on the map and made him the counter-culture icon he became, it’s simply not one of my favourites. Although there are a couple of gems here and the atmosphere was ahead of its time, I found the instrumentals on the album formulaic throughout, and it didn’t really hold my attention. In my opinion, the strongest aspect of the record is the fact that it’s performed live, with the audience in the background adding an extra layer of enjoyment. A 3.5, but I’m giving it a 3 as it’s just not my cup of tea.
not bad for an old country album. listening closely to the lyrics for the first time it occurs to me that this is probably a pretty risky album in 1968.
cash sounds great. the live audience actively takes away from the experience. good thing future live recordings learned restraint.
It's Johnny Cash, so it isn't bad. However, most of the recordings rely heavily on the novelty of the prison crowd. "Folsom Prison Blues" is the only song that's truly better here than in the studio recording. It's hard not to compare this to San Quentin which accomplishes basically the same thing but better.
Some very solid songs that kind of get lost with the rest of the album. Seems like the performance itself elevated this album and without it falls flat .
Good
This is really good "sitting on the porch on a Sunday afternoon" music, which is to say I like it but there's an exact mood I need to be in and I'm not gonna want to listen to it at any other time. I appreciate who Johnny was and what he stood for, and I like enough, but I'm just never jonesin' to put on a record of his. Prisoners do deserve some levity and a lifeline to the outside world, and I'm glad he did this.
So charming. Not the type of music I would normally put on, but I enjoyed it all the way through.
While not my preferred genre, At Folsom Prison is a quintessential listen as a foundation of music history. I found it more enjoyable than I expected.
What's to say.. nothing surprising or revolutionary here... Actually, more humour than San Quentin, see Dirty Old Egg-Suckin Dog, and Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart Best track - Cocaine Blues 3 stars - despite the humour still not wowing me
Two man in black from jails in a short time…no Beatles rush petty….algorithm is jammed up!
124/1001 An enjoyable and casual live album. The charm being in how relaxed Johnny is and how he interacts with the crowd and anyone on stage with little concern for ruining any takes. I think I prefer his San Quentin album more but they’re both pretty cool. 6/10
I enjoyed it. Another one to revisit later.
Live albums are better serviceable to fans, not people hearing the music for the first time. Johnny Cash's cowboy cadence is soothing. The instrumentals were definitely the aspect that suffered in the live recording.
Some great songs and moments on here. Love the country/blues sound and of course love his voice. Personally, I prefer his later stuff when it got deeper and out of the short blues tunes era, but still a strong and historically important album. Top Songs: Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues, Jackson
6/10 Najbolja pisma: 24 minutes
Good but kind of cheesy in places
Only thing i have to say is that this man sang about doing cocaïne and shoot his wife inside a prison in front of convicts who cheered and that honestly deserves credit for the boldness, it's kinda iconic
Essential Cash
🎸🎸🎸
Enjoyed it quite a lot, might listen again, enjoyed the humour
Why is Mr Johnny so sweaty. I can sum up most of the songs in this album quite quickly: "I was servin' time in prison, For shooting my pa, He was a nasty old fellow, But I do love my ma, And even though I did drugs, And served time in a gang, I think it's mighty unfair, A man like me oughtta hang" Very typical Johnny Cash. It was fine 60/100 Score edited 28/01/26
Although undeniably iconic, I find Cash’s music pretty repetitive in theme and sound after a while. Still a great record overall.
Not completely my thing, but I enjoyed the storytelling.
Obviously, a very catchy, engaging iconic Johnny Cash sound definitely an interesting review of the state of music to bring out and emphasize the darkness in the world, both abuse and drugs and prison, but also an important part of our society to acknowledge so mixed reviews, even though my mom hates him
It carries the 90s vibe, loved the green green grass of home and i loved the way hes telling his story, loved that i can hear the audience too
Me encanto.
3/5, a good album that's certainly worth a listen. Cash's performance here is lively, energetic, and engaging. Some of his vocal delivery is top tier; the way he growls, barks out, or cracks his voice just perfectly for a given lyric is awesome. The songs are old country and folk with some rock and roll twang, so don't expect a lot of variety melodically, harmonically, rhythmically.
Johnny Cash knew his audience and his sound, I'll give him that. His personality comes through on this live album, which I believe is a must if a live album is included on this list. I smiled multiple times during his quips. At the same time, At Folsom Prison is definitely one note. I mean, Cash had a lane and he thrived in it! I already heard Cash's live album At San Quentin on this list, so I'm a little confused why two Cash live albums recorded at prisons are included. I didn't get anything else out of this album that I didn't already get from the other live album. But we're all confused why four Morrissey albums are on the list, so I guess life does not make sense sometimes.
Johnny Cash continues to take his role as number one prison entertainer and outlaw country king seriously. Or should I say this is where he began to? Because this was the first album of many of his that would be recorded in prison settings, and ultimately attributed to breathing new life into his career. Again, the interactions between Cash and the prisoners make this album, like "At San Quentin", a worthy live album inclusion, despite my aversion to live albums on here. The type of banter being exchanged and the general energy could only be captured in this environment. His music, though, remains something that doesn't really appeal to me that much. Also literally everything about "Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart" is a CHOICE.
Wait Johnny Cash put out TWO live prison albums?!?!? And I got one literally 600 albums ago. I mean… how shitty is Johnny Cash’s discography that TWO live prison albums make the list but I’ve yet to see anything else by him. This albums fine but it felt exactly like the OTHER LIVE PRISON ALBUM
Listenable.
Day 152 Always found Johnny Cash a bit of a mixed bag for my tastes, some fun stuff here but probably wouldn’t revisit the whole album, definitely prefer the San Quinten album. 6/10 Highlights Folsom Prison Blues Cocaine Blues
Second live album in a row and I actually really enjoy them. The music here was decent but nothing exciting for me. I do really enjoy his voice and tone except for when he gets raspy. Johnny Cash seems like a tuff fella.
Johnny Cash is one of my absolute favorite musicians who I have been listening to for years at this point. He was a musical visionary who was able to take his sound to places that other artists did not dare to venture.
3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/johnny-cash/at-folsom-prison/ Not my thing, but better than expected.
Just not a big country fan, ik other people enjoy it
insane charisma from johnny cash, but the thing with these songs is often they’re all the same with different lyrics. super fun to listen to regardless
not my exact taste but i did give a few of his songs a try.
Johnny Cash is a masterful storyteller. June’s addition was great. Overall, I’m not the biggest fan of live albums, especially with a lot of crowd noise and/or interruptions. That took me out of it quite a bit. A couple of the tracks really didn’t work for me either. 3.5/5
It was alright. Western is not my style.
not my style, to be honest.
Hard to rate because it’s a historic album and I enjoyed it but I doubt I will be revisiting it.
Iconic sound, and iconic that he performed at a prison. I definitely enjoyed listening through it, but overall it just didn’t grab me as much as I would have liked. Best Track: 25 Minutes to Go
So interesting that he performed live at a prison. Making me intrigued. Very classic country. Funny!
One of the most iconic live locations ever recorded. A little musically simple, but Cash's calling card was always being for the every man. Favorite track was greystone church
- great humor - "cocaine blues" was fun - first half is more fun than the second half - liked it more than i thought i would
Hilarische teksten, crackly stem, slow music, meer praat
I fucking love cowboys but not enough to love it more
This is one of the best live albums I've ever listened to. The mixing of it is impeccable . There's nothing better than feeling like you're ACTUALLY at a concert. I'm not the biggest fan of country music, but I admire Johnny Cash's songwriting. I could imagine Roald Dahl using his lyrics in a book. Favorite(s): Jackson; Greystone Chapel
Not too bad but not really my style

Very possibly the best country album ever. Johnny Cash's voice has to be the best one in the whole country genre. Unlike any other country artist having very excessively pronounced country twang, he is very pleasant to listen to. He also has a very charming and humorous personality. Sometimes he laughs in the middle of songs and also tells a couple of jokes between tracks. Another one of the most remarkable aspects of the album are the lyrics. The stories portrayed in the songs are super entertaining. My favourite would be in the song '25 Minutes to Go' a narration toll from the perspective of a man who is about to get executed. The music is also very nice. In the album there are both very uplifting and catchy moments, and more slow and sad sounding ballads. However, I think once reached the second half of the record, the sound of the songs gets a bit repetitive. I firstly was very impress from how much I liked the album, but with more listens, I started to feel a bit numb about it. Either way, I think it still is a great album. I would give it a higher score, but I don't really see myself coming back to it.
this was fun!
It ok not all song are my type
It was good but sometimes felt gimmicky
Liked his voice and carisma If we take out the song “Cocaine Blues” its an excellent album
This was fun, I’ve never listened to JC before. I knew one song, albeit from TikTok.
The first song is charming, creative and fun. Then it goes on and on for 45 minutes. Not my gerne, but still charming.
Decent and charming. Fairly standard but mostly enjoyable.
Loved the crowd work and audience involvement
this album was a lot of the same thing over and over again, but i thought the commentary between takes was cute! Favorite song: Send a picture of mother Least Favorite song: Dark as the Dungeon HM: Greystone Chapel, i thought it was cool that they used a song written by an inmate.
Never been a big country fan, but I'm open to every album. It's a bit same, same but I did like it.
3.5
not for me but i appreciate it
Listening to this after watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s was definitely the right choice. I already knew the first song as well as Florence’s cover of Jackson
A bit samey perhaps, but good energy.
Recognized a couple of the songs but most were new to me. The theme of outlaw country was prevalent. Johnny Cash has an iconic voice and he never pushes his limits. A lot of quick little stories. I thought the live version of a prison concert was very unconventional but it was enjoyable. 6/10
Country/rockabilly music Not a huge fan of country music myself but the album’s recording itself is interesting. Was live recorded at Folsom prison in front of prisoners. Has a lot of gallows humor-esque lyrics Johnny Cash’s voice is… interesting
cash is great this was fun to listen to all the way through
This album relaunched Cash's career and was an interesting promotional concept. Recorded across 2 shows the same day it does capture his energy across a mix of mainly country songs. Not heard all the way through before and was worth a listed, even is a bit hyped by music critics.
It was ok, nothing amazing, nothing terrible.
The only live album worth paying attention to. Still country tho, sorry Johnny.
I get that this is an absolute classic, and he was appealing to the crowd of inmates at Folsom, but I wasn’t overly moved by it
I love Johnny Cash. This album is good, but inconsistent. It would have been incredible to experience it live (without being incarcerated). It doesn’t exactly translate to recording however.
mid like all his music
