Such a legend
best song: Folsom prison blues, or, I still miss someone
Here I was, all set to express some minor annoyance that both of the Johnny Cash prison records were on here, but this album is so goddamned charming. I love listening to Cash banter with the audience. The songs are also amazing. Having June come up and sing songs was really cute too 4/5
As far as complete albums go, this is a gold standard. Even non-Cash fans know of this one. Classic.
Johnny Cash rules. I wish I was a bigger fan because his catalog is humongous. This was a great album and from what I read up on, a really incredible, ground breaking live show at the prison.
The MAN. Songs of love, women and fighting. What’s not to like. And what a voice!
Hello I'm Johnny Cash.
Just a pure classic. Loved the live versions too
Good listen for multiple reasons as noted in other reviews but can't quite give it 5 stars
Not a big country fan, but Johnny Cash was very good!
So here’s the thing, I don’t know because I have never been in prison, but I imagine that if I was and I got the privilege of a concert I would be a bit annoyed that every song was about being in prison and/or being executed in prison. Because I’m not entirely sure that would be such a great emotional escape from my current situation. That being said, the album was throughly enjoyable. I’m taking a star off for the excessive dead prisoner songs.
Great album. Love hearing it now and then but wouldn’t add it to my queue. Hmmm… Does that make it a 3 or a 4?
How cool that he played at the prison.
This is a benchmark album. I grow tired of Johnny pretty quickly, but can appreciate why it is so special to so many.
Definitely a seminal moment in the history of rock. The music is a bit scrappy at times but the atmosphere, sentiment and spirit bring this one romping home. Good on you Johnny.
Cash was making waves many years before Rick Rubin showed up and this is a landmark album in more ways than one, as interesting sociologically as musically. Enormously enjoyable. And authentic.
I want to give it three stars, I didn’t like it but the live aspect and the fact he performed in a prison makes it a bit mire exotic
HL: "Folsom Prison Blues", “Jackson”, “Green, Green Grass of Home”
got some gas
Jeg foretrak San Quentin (bl.a. pga.
Lidt ligesom dem anden plade i fængslet.

Authentic Genuine (5,5/6)
Great live album. Enjoyed it a lot Favourites- Folsom prison blues, cocaine blues,25 minutes to go, long black veil, send a picture of mother, give my love to rose 4 stars
Good stuff although I'm a bit iffy about the man!
As original as a live album gets. But at the end of the days it's an album of mostly country covers.
Country, folk, male, mid, just legendary, great voice, great atmosphere, great announcements, this is a blue print for a live album - very authentic, country still not mine.
Tremenda experiencia.
Awesome, even some funny songs, the crowd takes the record to another level. The cover with Cash sweating. Great stuff.
John c Reilly did it better
ACAB
This sounds like a great document nicely raucous at times. I prefer to listen to album versions maybe the very interesting concept for Cash outweighs the quality a little bit. Excellent moment in time captured.
Fantastic live album, reminded me to finally give Johnny Cash’s discography a proper listen. I know a couple of the crowd’s cheers were added during production (inmates were afraid of possible retaliation from prison guards if they cheered too loudly at the parts talking about jail life) but that didn’t diminish the listening experience or the quality of Cash’s performance.
It’s fun and the live elements add a lot. I find it slightly one note, but that one note is one good note. 4/5
Yes!!! Now this is a great album!
What a classic. Johnny kills and plays off the crowd so well. Songs are the perfect duration to keep you going but not get bored. 4/5
Liked this.
i love you johnny cash 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 4.5/5
I really enjoyed listening to this. I’d never really listened to Johnny Cash before this. I like how cheerful he was, making jokes with the prisoners, even though he was playing in a prison. I can definitely see his influence on modern music.
Very cool and raw album. Worth revisiting for sure. Some very deep songs peppered with some very funny songs.
Great Live album. Really enjoyed the dynamic of this album. The inmates are one of the best live crowds ever. You can just feel the energy of the room when listening to this album
Classic Johnny Cash. Great listen!
- not a big country person - his usage of curse words is very fun to me though .. nothing like an old record with the word bitch in it
if you ever meet someone who says they don't have a part of them that wishes they were johnny cash playing live at folsom prison they are a replicant and you can just go ahead and blow their brains out right there on the spot
clasico
Good, he’s very charismatic
Not many country albums of the era have as much personality and livelihood as this does. These tracks are fairly simple, but Cash is a charismatic and hilarious singer, and the idea of his audience members being rowdy inmates from a maximum security prison brings greater attention and appreciation of his outlaw subject matter. Fantastic first half. I think the 5-track run from "The Long Black Veil" to "Flushed from the Bathroom" drags too long for its quiet and solemn mood on top of the minimalist instrumental. They should cut 3 of them. Other than that, I just wish the instrumental was more lively. Favorites: Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, Jackson
Iconic
A great album all the way through. I love folk music and ballads. I love the stories in the songs. No surprise but Johnny cash sounds amazing even live. I liked the rhythm of the guitar in most of the songs aswell. Would 100% listen again
I’m not always a fan of a live concert, but the live element of this is what makes it. The interruptions, the announcements, the imperfections, the inmates’ reactions. they are what animates the whole thing. The songs are good and I haven’t listened to a Johnny Cash song I don’t like, but I appreciate the edginess of this. It didn’t seem over long either.
An album I know well. Great songs, great performance.
such a cool album in a cool setting songs are still plain country but that doesnt take away much from it
What's there to say? Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison is a classic for a reason. Still great to listen to every time.
I can't think of anyone who can take such woeful lyrics and put them to music that makes you unable to resist the urge to dance and laugh. Pure magic.
Amazing atmosphere
Quite a collection of tunes, some I heard for the first time. Rating this album higher based on what Cash did for those men in prison.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Dark as the dungeon, Folson prison blues, 25 minutes to go, I got stripes,
Classic American music! This is one of few albums. I’ve already heard of on this list.
Very good
Very solid and great history
God bless Johnny Cash.
Rating: 3,75-4
A classic album. Surprisingly great production.
Love Johnny Cash, he was one-of-a-kind.
I always liked Johnny Cash’s deep voice
I enjoyed this and wouldn't normally have listened to it.
This was a fun and unique album to listen to!
A gritty historical mutual love fest between Cash and the inmates. A treasure trove of prison-themed songs.
The idea and principle behind this album also make it great. Lyrics terrific. Solid musicianship in the backing band.
Usually don't love country but I gotta respect this. Top of the genre and works extremely well as a live album, especially with the location. 4/5
Classic Johnny Cash. Love the interaction with the crowd. Jackson, one of my favorite songs ever.
7.5/10
I wish country music sounded like this now, then maybe it wouldn’t be my least favorite type of music.
Enjoyable listen. I've never heard it all the way through but have heard most in parts. Not a country fan but this is decent.
A really fine album, less flamboyant perhaps than Live at San Quentin, but contains some great tunes. I particularly liked 25 minutes which I had never heard before.
The unique charm of this one is the organic energy in it. It's a well-done live album, complete with Cash's usual, charming brand of country.
Classic album. The interactions with the crowd are great.
Another banger from Johnny
Quite good. Love the prison aspect
Couldn’t get through it, not my thing
This is the Johnny Cash I expected, when my first album here was his At San Quenton. I was rather disappointed in that one. This one is the real deal. First off, at 45 minutes, it is 10 minutes longer than San Quenton. It's a better song selection, and better performances. And a better atmosphere. It is better in every measure than San Quenton, which came out a year later. This is the "man In Black" at his best, in a prison singing mostly songs of prison, and people on the fringes. A little tough to rate, I respect this album, and it's a watershed recording. But it's not an album I've owned, nor do I expect to buy it now. But I expect to listen to it again. I need to stick w/ my rating system. It's somewhere between 4 and 5, but I think this one rounds down. So 4/5
good live record. Im not the biggest Johnny Cash Fan but it was great!
A true classic. Some great songs, performances, the banter, the legend around it as well. A solid 4. I’m not sure it’s a 5 compared to the other 5s, but still near the top of the classic live albums.
Love Johnny cash, these prison albums have a special feel to them.
Excellent
Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
I've had San Quentin for years so Folsom feels very familiar despite this being my first listen. Hearing Johnny play to the prison crowd is just wonderful. If you can't enjoy this music something's wrong, you dirty egg sucking dog!
We need to have more such voice back!
Great album!
V pohode
Really fun listen of a unique concert experience.
Fun live album. Loved that the kept all the interactions with the audience as it made it feel more real.
One of the few incredible live albums. Not always my favorite musical stylings, but a masterful display of country/blues in a fun, live environment. Fun interactions with the audience, and sole fun storytelling. Fav tracks: Folsom Prison Blues, Cocaine Blues, Orange Blossom Special
Johnny's voice is great, great live performance but a few repetitive meh tracks
too cool for school

Okay, as much as I usually dislike live albums, this is maybe the one live album that 100% no hesitation deserves to be here. Johnny Cash performing at THE Folsom Prison, the titular prison of one of his biggest hits, it's karmic. Apparently this was a late-career boost for him, putting him back on the map for a lot of people. He sounds fantastic, and the banter is really fun. Could you imagine performing your songs about being an outlaw in a prison? An incredible stunt to pull, and the end result is fantastic. Favorite tracks: Folsom Prison Blues, Dark as the Dungeon, The Long Black Veil, Send a Picture of Mother, I Got Stripes, Dirty Old Egg-Suckin Dog. Album art: It's just a picture of Johnny at the mic, but damn if it isn't iconic. This is the Man in Black baby, the dude himself. I never expect much for live album covers anyway, but yeah, this one is extremely effective as far as portraits go. 4.5/5
A staple live album. The banter between and sometimes during, makes the performance at the prison very unique.
One of the coolest, most badass albums of all time. A lot of the time, live albums don't add much, but here, the live recording is what makes it so special. The music isn't my favorite - this is about as good as country gets - but damn if it isn't entertaining as hell.
Just a stunning live performance, but it was SO weird to be "inside" a prison and hear the normal prison operations going on.
An all time classic, I love how the prisoners boo the officers when they make announcements lol. Really beautiful songs, no one does it like Mr. Cash.
Lleno de rolones y buen cotorreo.
7.5/10 Amazing voice Highlights: Dark as the Dungeon Flushed from the bathroom of your heart Jackson
Great atmosphere
Classic. Glad I finally listened to it.
Great singer and storyteller
Loved the atmosphere and how many songs were about the prison. Honestly flew by super fast and I wanna hear it again. And for a live album Johnny sounded SO good Probably 5 stars when I settle in more.
Really great to listen to - makes you feel like you are there. 4/5
Interesting. Hearing the prison announcements really enrich it. I think of Johnny Cash differently now. Less mainstream. More of an artist and struggling human, too.
1. folzom prizon bluez - 3 2. dark az the dungeon - 1.5 3. i ztill mizz zomeone - 1.5 4. cocaine bluez - 3.5 5. 25 minutez to go - 3 6. orange blozzom zpecial - 1.5 7. the long black veil - 2 9. zend a picture of mother - 2.5 10. the uuall - 1.5 11. dirty old dog - 1 12. fluzhe from the bathroom - 1 13. jackzon - 2 14. give my love to roze - 2.5 15. i got ztripez - 1.5 16. green green grazz - 1.5 17. greyztone chapel - 1.5
Real Cash, so pure, live, genius!
Is it cachet, or charisma? I hung on every word. The literal and storytelling nature of his songs are so compelling. And the unique act of prison shows is something I’m suprised was allowed. I think Metallica has played San Quentin too - but this is still pretty rare. Glad I had an excuse to check this out.
3.5 stars. The leadoff title track is so good. Lyrically dark, which makes sense given the context. "Jackson" duet is beautiful. Really sounds like a live album, in a good way.
4.5
- Fun concept for an album :) - 8/10
I know this one came first but musically I prefer the San Quentin prison album. However its still epic and his voice is immense.
8/10
I like the live aspect and knowing a little about how Cash went to Folsom Prison and there was some solidarity between him and the prisoners.
Classic country, with some banter between songs
Wow. I enjoyed this far more than I did the San Quentin record.
- 25 minutes to go: funny, poetic, and at a prison?! i get why he's iconic - Jackson duet with June Carter : got me to stop scrolling instagram and find out who Cash duetted with! - Also liked the last two songs: Green, Green Grass of Home & Greystone Chapel (4/5, Maybe like 7.5/10)
!! I love Cash's deep voice and the country town lilt is so pleasing to the ear. You can really feel his passion and love for performance. The fact that they left the audience interactions and Cash's jokes and laughs in the recording was a nice touch and made Cash feel like such a real one. He definitely gives off the vibes of a cheeky but world weary street smart guy. Very charismatic and charming too. From his spotify synopsis, he's a world war 2 vet too and his music was a major impact on post war music. Seems like he became popular around the same time as rock and roll, etc so he must have been quite influential. It'd be interesting to watch a documentary about him. Interesting idea to record the songs in a prison concert too. The music feels very quintessential country/blues and the lyrics are very literal lol but they really tell a story. There's a sense of humor that you don't see much in pop music nowadays. It's quite dark sometimes too, one of the songs is literally about someone counting down the minutes till his hanging. I'm not so familiar with this genre, but I think this is quite common for the genre. It's very much like passing down stories. I wonder how the prison audience actually felt about some of the songs.
Long black veil
Moral: do not shoot anyone in Reno, or elsewhere
Ainoa syy miksi en anna täysiä pisteitä on livetallenteelle väistämätön ainutkertaisuuden aura - haluanko kuulla samoja haparointeja, samaa yleisöääntä vuodesta vuoteen? 4,5.
Liking this more than I expected. Tracks 2-3 are good, 7, etc. Liking the slower songs.
Nice
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (1968) Folsom Prison Blues Dark as the Dungeon I Still Miss Someone Cocaine Blues 25 Minutes to Go Orange Blossom Special The Long Black Veil Send a Picture of Mother The Wall Dirty Old Egg-Suckin’ Dog Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart Jackson Give My Love to Rose I Got Stripes Green, Green Grass of Home Greystone Chapel It's funny, his guitar is out of tune a lot of the time. His voice is stronger than a mountain stream, and June Carter is kind of unimpressive. He talks to the audience a lot which is nice, and the songs are generally very short! I got a few songs out of here that I want to learn.
I was fw it
tbh rly lovely ngl enjoyed driving and hearing it and getting therapy from kat - love me some cocaine blue and dirty old egg sucking dog
Solid and fun listen.
Although I slightly preferred the other live prison performance on this list by Mr Cash, this was still a very good album. I love the fact that you can tell how much Johnny is enjoying performing with his little jokes and interludes.
not as good as san quentin but still pretty lit
Very entertaining and feels like I’m really at this performance. Good roots rock'n'roll - miles from yeehaw country. What a deep, velvety voice.
Great album
Not as good as San Quentin, but still pretty nice
I don't get why there is 2 live albums of Johnny Cash playing in a prison on a chart where you can only list 1001 albums, but anyway, it's Johnny Cash playing in a prison. It's fantastic. As I give a 5 stars to the other, I'll give only 4 to this one. Thank you and good night!
HAIKU REVIEW Hi there! I’m in jail Please don’t shoot to watch me die Beauty found in prison
Johnny Cash!
Full of character, and great energy. A classic.
Album 122 of 1001 Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Folsom Prison Blues It's Johnny Cash, so he gets a few points for that. Even so, I've always felt so many of his songs just sound the same. This, on the other hand, gets points for being a good, fun, overall performance where we get to enjoy some banter with his confined audience. It is a good time. Slip this album on and it flies by because you're just into it. Simple legendary performance, at this point.
Great concert especially when it gets going, I don’t know how popular this opinion is but I did prefer the other prison album, still very good 4/5
love it it is just so funny <333 Especially the one bout the dog 🐕 🐕 HE A GOD FOR THIS FR 🙌
Really like this 4.25/5
BL: generally consumed a decent amount of the Johnny Cash discography through parents and grandparents but interested to give my first proper Johnny Cash album a go. Having read a little about this album I absolutely love the concept. AL: this is a great album. The idea of such an anti-authoritarian and powerful social commentary of an album that has not been replicated much since apart from RATM and similar acts is amazing from someone who I assumed was a pretty standard country lad. Mind blowing stuff especially for the time, some of the music was just ok but the album as an experience was amazing. FT: “cocaine blues”, “give my love to rose”, “green green grass of home”, “grey stone chapel” 4/5
With today being the Fourth of July, I was really hoping for Springsteen's Born In the USA, but I'll settle for Folsom Prison. After all, what's more American than our abysmal penal system? I haven't listened to a lot of Johnny Cash in my life, but I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from this album. I really enjoyed listening to this, and it's probably the most interesting live album that I've ever listened to. I really loved how raw and true it felt, with Cash joking with the inmates, and the announcements coming from the prison staff. The inmates were almost like an instrument themselves, as their reactions to Cash's lyrics added a realness to the stories that Cash was telling in his songs. The instrumentation here was pretty bare, but that's fine, because the star of the show in Cash's music is his lyrics and storytelling. Cash does such a good job of portraying loneliness ("I Still Miss Someone" and "Send a Picture of Mother") and hopelessness ("The Wall") in his songs, but the next minute, he's giving a masterclass in gallows humor ("25 Minutes to Go"). His ability to effectively switch gears like that is pretty remarkable. Johnny Cash isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but I can appreciate how great this record is, and its importance in music. Best song: a tie between "The Wall" and "25 Minutes to Go"
Not a fan of country but Johnny cash voice is fantastic
I prefer the later work of Johnny Cash but this is definitely a classic.
Folsom Prison Blues, best track of the album. I loved it being live.
I have not historically been a huge fan of live music, nor have I listened to much Johnny Cash. But what I have listened to, I have generally liked. After listening to this album, I definitely think I need to listen to more Johnny Cash! Because I liked this one a lot! Opening with Folsom Prison Blues is incredibly good, and listening to Cash say “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die,” and then hearing a crowd of prisoners cheer is hilarious, even if it apparently was added in post-production. I was excited when I saw Dark as A Dungeon on the track list, but was disappointed in listening. I really love the song, but I do not like this version at all. The live-aspect of the performance makes up for it a bit though. “You can’t say hell or shit or anything like that.” I actually think this album explained to me the appeal of live albums, as I quite enjoyed the little segues and interruptions and comments. I was so glad after Long Black Veil(which is an incredible song, btw, and one I had heard before) that they got this man some water. Poor dude was coughing and very hoarse. I quite enjoyed bringing in June and the others, and I thought June did great on Jackson. Definitely one I enjoyed quite a bit. Glad to have listened to it.
Another very good live prison album although I thought his one from San Quentin was much more lively and energetic. I still enjoyed this from beginning to end. Johnny Cash's music will be forever linked to my first memories of music as a kid and all the mom's and grandma's, in Kokomo, who loved him so much. Folsom Prison Blues is a classic and I've heard a few remakes that are pretty good but the song that stood out to me was 25 Minutes to Go. My favorite off this album. Really enjoyed Cocaine Blues and Orange Blossom Special, especially the harmonica parts. But I think my favorite part of this album was when June Carter was talking and he simply states, "I love to hear you talk." I don't know, just made me smile. That boy loved his girl! I also got a kick out the prison announcements. Good album and good memories. I won't try and proclaim I'm the biggest fan, but I won't turn off his music whenever I hear it. 4
Great as always, a bunch of Johnny Cash classics with some great tracks I didn't feel that the "live" part really added anything though, little atmosphere came across on the album
This one is great
It's wild that a concert like this was ever condoned. I can't imagine it happening today.
This album is very good to great, and it’s really cool that it exists as a live recording from the time. It’s recorded at Folsom Prison and you can hear the crowd and there’s various announcements and things throughout. It’s definitely a cool historical document. Cash’s voice is incredible throughout and the performance is relatively tight given that it’s live. I just have to knock it slightly for the sound quality (though it’s decent given the circumstances) and some of the long asides that take away from the music a bit. Favorite song: Folsom Prison Blues Others: I Still Miss Someone, 25 Minutes to Go, The Long Black Veil, Jackson, Give My Love to Rose
What a fun album. Love how everything was kept in, the prisoners, the announcements, Johnny Cash asking for water. This and San Quentin are great.
Tätä albumia odotettu since day 1.... Vitosta sille mietitty... Laitetaan nelosta.. kunnia nelonen edelleen..
Charming and funny Johnny Cash. Listening to most of these songs for the 1st time. "25 minutes to go" is my favourite so far.
Johnny Cash is one of the only artists that can play as good live as he did in the studio. He has a fantastic live persona that just electrifies the audience. Usually, I can never stand live versions of songs. Johnny makes one of the only exceptions. It does feel like cheating in a way, though, because he can pick his best songs. So, the album is composed of some of Johnny’s best songs, but the score I give it can’t reflect that. A real dilemma. One of the best live albums of all time. 4/5
Not only a good album on its own merits, but THE primary source of Outlaw Country.
it's ok
A good album from a bygone time. The entire premise would be D.O.A. today.
Great music, even better crowd. Surprised that a live album could be so good. 8/10
I'm not a C&W fan, but that voice is just amazing. I wasn't familiar with most of these songs, but I liked them; I never knew that Johnny Cash did a cover of "Green, Green Grass of Home". The album captures the atmosphere of the concert succinctly.
Best crowd 1968. Prison sounds like a sweet deal.
Most of his best songs are here. A good argument for why he matters.
Classic JC. One of my favourite artists and an amazing album. His singing is a not perfect and the songs are more relatable to the 1800s than the 2000s, but there’s comfort in that.
I really enjoy this album. It's a super interesting concept for a live album and adds a different layer of meaning with the choice of songs he went with for this concert. I like that they keep the banter in between songs and it's nice to hear Johnny Cash break a bit and laugh during certain songs. Some of the songs start to feel similar when played one after another here and I feel take a bit of a dip in the middle but then pick back up. It's a quick and enjoyable listen too for how many songs are on the track list. Overall, I feel like this is a really strong live album with a cool concept. Standout Tracks: Folsom Prison Blues, I Still Miss Someone, Cocaine Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, Orange Blossom Special, The Wall, Jackson, I Got Stripes, Greystone Chapel
Always brilliant. This one has all the classics and I probably should have listened to this before Live at San Quentin which appears as the fresher, sharper album of the two probably as a result. An excellent raconteur, performer and musician. Jonny Cash united all people in thinking he was an extremely cool fucking guy
Jeg elsker country, elsker livealbum, elsker Johnny cash. Vi begynner å nærme oss 5eren nå
Likte det! Cash virker som en koselig mann
This live album was actually recorded in at Folsom Prison in Northern California. We listened as a family on our drive back from Las Vegas where we attended the Taylor Swift concert. No TS albums on the 1001 Albums list...so far! This was a great listen. The Man in Black had lots of hits and that distinctive baritone voice. I'd just watched a little bit about him on the Sound City documentary, as well. Good listen.
I just think live music is neat
Been loving these prison albums. 4
Can't be denied -- this is a classic recording. It's so much fun to hear the prisoners getting swept up in the music, hooting and hollering, and hearing Johnny mess up lyrics or start laughing. A minimalist show, as is to be expected. But always a decent listen. Just a few too many religious songs for me, personally.
Quite enjoyed this one!
Loved it!
Let me just put this out there, I love music with an infinite passion, but there is one genre I absolutely disdain: country. However, Johnny Cash is the most punk country has ever been. He recorded MULTIPLE albums at fuckin prisons. You think Luke Bryan or whatever truck loving motherfucker these days would do that shit, no fucking way. Johnny was punk. Are there songs on the album that I would seek out, not really. But I do respect this enough to give it a 4.
Amazing album! I really enjoyed it. I'd heard lot about it before and know of him of course. I see his face every time I go to A Bar Named Sue. There was a track on there where his wife June sings with him (Jackson). Now it all makes sense. Johnny / June on the bathroom doors. I didn't know that was his wife. I hearted one song called Give My Love to Rose.
Gripping and compelling in a way few live (or any) albums are. A great record.
Good
Man in Black
Classic Johnny Cash, solid listen.
Interested to know the history on this album. How did Folsom Prison get Johnny Cash to come there? I do appreciate a live album being on this list. Dirty Old Egg-Suckin' Dog has to make a place in my vocabulary. There's a song named Jackson, 5 stars. I think I overlooked Johnny Cash just because I know his hits, but there's some good singin' here, nothing too crazy instrumentally, though. Great stage presence though. Do all of the solo musicians of this era have that molasses sounding voice like Johnny Cash, or does Johnny Cash sound like all the others?
He looks like Jim Carrey on the album cover Very cool dynamic of performing in a prison and hearing the inmates. Especially laughed when they booed the warden. Loves the combination of songs about cocaine and then love songs Johnny Cash's voice is legendary
Johnny Cash is a man’s man. I think Cocaine Blues is one of the best songs out there, just gets 4 from me because some of the songs become forgettable after awhile. Still super solid I wish I could give 4.5 Fun fact: Cash only wrote 5 songs on the album.
I didn't know about this one. I know the classic Johnny Cash songs, but had never listened to an album from start to finish. Really liked it! I enjoyed how it was a live album where he made mistakes, he cracked up, he had conversations with the audience. Great album. Will listen again for sure.
The concept of recording an album from a State Prison is badass. And the little interactions between Johnny and the inmates are what make this album very unique. A hidden piece of the album is the inmates boo-ing the associate warden and then getting instructions of how to leave the mess hall, on the last track of the record. This album is pairs well with a sleeve-cut plaid shirt out doing chores in the yard, which reminds you of the community service you did after your stint in “the pen”. Nobody needs to know it was a white collar crime. But with about 25 minutes to go in the album, it started to get a little repetitive, as country and rockabilly does. The music itself is mostly boring, almost as bad as an egg-sucking dog. With the main focus being Cash’s lyrics. The lyrics of some of the songs are dark (as a dungeon), and the inmates go crazy for it. Which is both hilarious and terrifying. They call the Man in Black a master storyteller, and this is on full display in Cocaine Blues, which seems to be the plot of some crazy John Dillinger type shit. A gem on the album is Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart, in which each line is a poetic analogy of how he’s been dumped. I found it amusing and a creative departure from the rest of the tracks. The uniqueness of this live album is what makes it an awesome listen, even if I don’t care for much of Johnny Cash’s music. And as an overall soft person, I hope this is the closest I come to being in prison. Thanks for giving me that experience Johnny :)
There was only one Johnny Cash, wasn't there.
Great atmosphere, the music would be less without the crowd and the crowd would be less without the music. I took a star off as I don't think its something I'd regularly listen to.
It’s a classic so it’s probably getting rated higher than it should. Johnny can’t tune his guitar, the drums sound the same on every (train) track, and he can’t remember the words for some of the songs. But it’s so real and raw it’s deserving.
Ganske okay livealbum.
This is the first country album I've ever listened to and I'm glad it is. Johnny's voice in this album is so clear especially for a live album which makes it easy to follow along with his amazing songwriting and storytelling. You can hear that Johnny is happy to be singing to an audience that really appreciates his music with the amount of passion he uses and the amount of fun he's having. 9/10
Folsom is a hair less than San Quentin before Johnny stops for his drink. After that, comparison blurs while the concerts remain distinct. This is dark material, for the most part. The audience seems to receive it as gallows humor; I hear Cash unsteady at first. A setlist carefully chosen, refined later for the vinyl. Human connection rendered unusually contingent comes through.
Legendary stuff. Big fan of Johnny Cash, and he seemed like a genuinely funny guy. Standouts: Folsom Prison Blues, Send a Picture of Mother
Johnny Cash was one of the original country stars. This album showcases many of his talents: His deep, sultry voice, his natural story telling, and most of all his striking charisma. There's times when he voice cracks or he just asks for a glass of water a second time, and it shows how comfortable he is on stage. One hell of an artist
Las que me han gustado: -Folsom Prison Blues -Jackson -I got stripes -25 minutes to go -Cocaine Blues
One of the few live albums I enjoy. Cash's interplay with the crowd and songs are just fun, and it seems like he cares about the men he is playing to.
podobało mi się
I like this album. Old school country is pretty good, and I like Cash's singing. The songs in the album are a weird mix of sad/melancholy and humor. At first I didn't like the crowd cheering during songs, but I can tolerate it by the end, I'd still prefer it to be quiet but that's just my opinion. Unsurprisingly a lot of songs about prison in a performance at a prison. Favorite song: Jackson Worst song: 25 Minutes to Go
Sounds good, also its just interesting that this is at a prison i think
My buddy Jamie sang this song at karaoke
Very cool. I love prison and I hate women.
Good Cash album
I love a live album and definitely some hard hitters on here. I knew some songs but this was my first listen to this album as a whole and I hate rating albums especially on first listen.
Really like his voice. Although as a live album and kinda like a best of, I question why I shouldn't be listening to a studio recording?
The genius and the sheer size of Johnny Cash's balls for having the brilliant idea to record live in front of some at the worst degenerates, not only that but stacking the track list with a dark repertoire of gallows humour jail songs is inspired. Would listen again. Favourite tracks - Folsom Prison Blues/Cocaine Blues and Jackson.
Not big on live albums but this one at Folsom was great. I love listening to Johnny Cash. It’s comfort music. His camaraderie with the inmates was fantastic and fun to listen to. 4! T3B 1. Folsom Prison Blues 2. Give My Love to Rose 3. Cocaine Blues 4. Orange Blossom Special
Can’t go wrong with Cash. How such “simple” music can be feel so energetic and rowdy is amazing. See: Cocaine Blues.
Great track, felt a little long but the banter during the show was fun and I liked most of the songs
Timeless and cool
Man, guy was a performer. Jackson stood out, weird how it can stir up memories
Loved it, Johnny cash is such a good storyteller (also I feel like it helped with my whole "focus on lyrics" thing), also such great crowd work
A classic JC
villiinnytetään vankeja...hulluunutetaan... johnny cash ei itse koskaan ollut yli yhtä yötä lukkojen takana...murahtava ääni, tietenkin esityksen tärkein napsu... folk biisit ovat mitä ovat, hyvää tarinam kerrontaa...suurin osa vähän tylsiä kuitenkin. fiilis kuitenkin hyvä...ehkä kadun tähtien määrää myöhemmin... 25 minutes to go paras biisi
The best to ever do it at the coolest place to do it at
first listen pretty great
I just had a Johnny Cash album two days ago, so it was a surprise to see another one. The algorithm strikes again. Anyway, this album is classic. I generally don’t like live albums but this might be one of very few exceptions. With the inmates’ laughter and cheers, announcements from the PA, Johnny’s accidentally laugher all come together to create an atmosphere that you can’t help but imagine yourself there.
An absolute classic and a must listen Cash is brilliant and has such an iconic voice and sound
Classic, the live atmosphere really adds to the album.
Is ok, actually strange to hear live and enjoy it same if not better than studio recording
How to connect with your audience
Bit o Johnny Cash. Loved his cover of green green grass of home
Molto Buono
Classic country hits from the best to ever do it in my opinion. The charm in this record is seen throughout the track list as Cash addresses the crowd and even takes a jab at his own record label. The charm is evident through the music as well. The whole album sort of feels like a movie at times, that's the appeal in my opinion, very unique experience that you can't get anywhere else. 8/10
I don't think there's another live album quite like this. The cheers from inmates, the telephone call in between songs, Johnny Cash joking around and interjecting at his own songs - all followed by him singing a song someone wrote in "Greystone Chapel." The album gives you a small window into Folsom and what Cash was like; how he related to people.
Johnny Cash has such a great voice and though his music is relatively simple, he is masterful. I love the interactions in this live album and how charming he is and what a "rock and roll" concept playing at a prison for a live album is
Lacked a little of the edge of San Quentin, but still superb. The Legend of John Henry's Hammer was my highlight.
I'm not a county fan but there's something strangely compelling about his interaction with his audience
Mmm interactie!
Legend
absolutely love johnny cash, just not the hugest fan of live albums, but this is still a solid 4 star.
Johnny cash has charisma and he has a great sense of humor. The songs in this album are fun and uplifting.
epic
Love the prison albums but this wavers a bit in the middle
Surprisingly enjoyable. Lyrics fitting of the location with fun banter between songs. I can see why this is considered a classic live album. Favorite: 25 Minutes to Go
No one has a voice like Johnny Cash that’s why he’s Johnny Cash! Overall i liked it, simple folksy songs with witty lyrics and couple zingers. Not really my thing but you can just hear how he has influenced contemporary music. Really cool that it was at a prison and included works from inmates and recordings from the live event.
4, decent fun
Nice and chill
Love the classic, deep tone of his voice. Didn’t rate higher because it seems like several songs had the same tune.
Storytelling over a gently strummed guitar - with a voice fit for this. One or other more upbeat songs where Johnny proves that he can actually sing (Jackson for example). Classic country blues
Not my normal style but quite enjoyable
Cash is great. Not generally a fan of live recordings but this one was solid but it did leave out many of his songs I like the most.
really fun listen
Great sounding album despite it being recorded live. Lots of his hits from top to bottom and a quick and easy listen. 8/10.
cash is a great storyteller. could do with more folk-blues and less polka, but hey
I appreciate the story telling, but I didn't like the country twang
Johnny sure had some fun with this one and I bet the inmates just loved it.
Another Artist I've never been too familiar with. Some really great tracks in this album that get the knee going - especially enjoyed Folsom Prison Blues and 25 Minutes to Go. Cash's comments throughout the live performance are quite funny too and really help build a great personality for the album. Really enjoyed this album and found it as a great starting point for Cash's work.
Love the commentary from Cash and the story behind the album. Great songs and a great live recorded album. 4/5
Better than I expected for a live album
Indeed kinda silly that both this and the San Quentin record are on the list. I think I like this one better, though I’d have to do ‘em back to back to really be sure. Not every song pops for me, but nice to have an appearance from June and I certainly think this is the more playful of the two records. The one two punch of “Dirty old egg suckin’ dog,” and “Flushed from the bathroom of your heart” are so fun and would have equally crushed at middle schools. In fact, I really wish there was a “Johnny Cash Live at William Lenoir Middle” because that would have slayed.
Said from one who does not enjoy so-called country music.... this is a great album. It's definitely the live aspect that really makes it stand out (i.e. I know to me it would be more staid and frankly dull if it were just in a sterile studio setting). Much of it really borrowed from (or established?) old rock/punky folk ... in addition his low-key band should get nearly equal billing for propelling these songs along. I actually love the banter between - and often during - these songs. 8/10 4 stars.
Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. Classic.
Legendary. Not quite 5 stars.
I once went to prison for punching the pussy out of my niece. My cell mate was a huge, heavily tattooed man named Rupert. He was a toff who ran a paedophile ring in West London. Cool guy. I hope he's well.
Look at the sweaty nonce. SHACK in a playground much?
A very quickly-paced Southern country record that was very consistent with its songs and performance. Johnny was one of the best performers of his era, and this mostly uncut recording proves it.
Very good live versions of many great songs. I wonder if he would be allowed to perform in a prison today?
Otroligt hårt!
Really enjoyed this, felt like it told a story and the audience involvement oddly added to it
It blows my mind that Johnny just knows and is in harmony with his audience here. That connection is so complete that it transforms the songs and their lyrics--becoming something more. The reaction of the crowd matters more than the content of the songs. They find a home, not in literal acceptance but in audacity. The audacity of swearing, of being there, riding the edge of crassness, and understanding something that they all share. The twang and railroad beat make this feel both fictitious and absolutely real.
Always liked the concept of give concerts at jails. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_Folsom_Prison
Thoroughly enjoyed but have to wonder if women like Johnny Cash at all
3.8 - classic album with some rockers and singalong.
I really like Dark as the Dungeon, The Long Black Veil and The Wall.
Such a neat album. The instrumentals are really nothing special, but the songwriting and storytelling of the lyrics on this thing are so interesting and kept me into it the whole time. Also the inclusion of the inmates cheering and yelling adds quite a bit of authenticity. 7/10
Always love Johnny
Prison is no punishment these days, they’ve all got flat screen TVs with all the channels and PlayStation 4 and Johnny Cash recording an album, it’s like a holiday camp for gods sake
one of my favorite live albums
Don't have much Johnny Cash records, but, At Folsom Prison is my absolute favorite! What can be better than Johnny performing in front of prisoners at a prison with a set of "appeasing the audience" appropriate songs ! Wow, still a classic!
Not my cup of tea, but a staple still
I mean it's Johnny Cash, you already know it's good. Hits many of the same notes as At San Quentin and here, as there, the atmosphere is as important as the music.
Quite good! Fun to hear Johnny Cash acting pretty casual while recording the music. To this day I still don't know exactly why I like Johnny Cash, he seems to me like a sub-par singer but I like his voice enough that somehow it works? An odd phenom.
Back when prisoners were just lovable goofballs who robbed and murdered. 8/10
This one's much better than the later San Quentin album. This list doesn't need them both: keep Folsom.
it's like you're actually there. electrifying and louche
This was good, but not quite as good as I expected it to be. I love the wit in Johnny Cash's music, and his voice is incredible, but this album was missing some of the soul and emotion that you get from his other work. Give My Love To Rose has it in buckets, but there's not so much other than that. Also, I thought it could done with a bit more of the back and forth with the crowd - the big thing about this album is that it's recorded live at the prison, but you lose a lot of the interaction and the energy from that. There's a recording of A Boy Named Sue that he did at San Quentin Prison which captures that perfectly - this album doesn't reach the same heights as that. 4 on 5.
Not as great as I thought. But good.
Hello, I'm Johnny Cash.
Ivica Gotovina je prava sirovina. Općenito on, njegova glazba, najviše paše u tom nekom ljetnom/žega periodu. Odličan live nastup, veoma kultan i s razlogom! P.S. previše dobrih albuma zaredanih.
Rockabilly. Country. Oddly comforting though, even though I'm not usually into country. Really liked that it was a live performance and the rapport he seemed to have with the incarcerated folks.
I mean, it's Johnny Cash. Can't really be bad to that. Classic live album but I do feel like I need to be in the right mood to listen to this.
