Reviews (page 10 of 12)
Exciting and fun. Love the celtic melodies. Couldn't listen to for long stretches without going insane.
Very different from everything else, could have done with being a wee bit shorter
Sometimes it sounds like St. Patrick's Day. Other times it sounds like a hangover, which I guess happens when you sing about sleeping off a binge in a drunk tank on Christmas Eve. But "Fairytale Of New York" is actually one of my favorite Christmas songs. Overall the album surprisingly never crosses the border from lubricated to morose, which isn't something I can say about the Dropkick Murphys.
It still sounds fresh.
Enjoyable. I've never given the Pogues much thought outside of Come on Eileen. The Irish flavour gets a bit tiresome by the end. Would listen again.
A neo-folk kinda thing going on.
I may have only heard a few tracks from the Pogues, and never a full album. Overall, I think I like the Pogues. "Fairytale of New York" is the track from this album that I've heard several times before, and I like it. "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" and "The Broad Majestic Shannon" were other favorites. To me the Pogues (with their Celtic instrumentation) would fit in well with Great Big Sea, and the first album from the Crash Test Dummies. The Pogues add a punk feel to their delivery, and it was worth checking out the album as a whole.
Interesting album. I was not familiar with any of the music. I will probably never listen to it again but I didn't hate it.
it was really fun and irish! i liked the vibe and i just wanted to be in a little irish pub dancing to this song. i wouldn’t listen to it again because i have no reason to but i thought it was overall really fun !
3/5 nice irish sounds, but not ultimate.
It’s a unique sound for sure. But the whole time listening to the album I kept thinking “This song would be great in a movie, but not so much by itself”.
A fun, celtic punk album that was fun to listen to. Kind of reminds me of songs you'd play at a pub/bar with your best friends. 7/10.
Good instrumental playing….
As this album played I got both excited and annoyed. Excited because I have a very soft spot for this type of music, kind of like Dropkick Murphys or some other irish band of misfits. The people who live out in the sticks in the show Outerbanks call themselves the Pogues so that was a nice call out as well. But I'm annoyed because while this album is fine, and has one reallllllly good song, Turkish Song of the Damned (holy cow love the beat), this does not need to be on this list. Throw this album up against Miles Davis or ACDC or Fleetwood and it just crumbles.
Welp, here we are again, with a Celtic album by a Celtic band. There's plenty on this album to like, and I do like it. At the same time, it doesn't resonate at a higher frequency for me. 3 stars.
Some iconic songs, but not huge amounts of variation IMO
Come for the punk, stay for the Irish folk.
SKA? (no sé, capaz estoy tirando fruta).
Very clearly the inspiration for Flogging Molly, sounds like a lot of Flogging Molly's more ballad-ish stuff. Really enjoyable, wish i would have discovered this a long time ago.
This is some interesting Irish music for sure. I can see how it influenced other irish bands in the future like Flogging Molly, etc.
Love the Christmas song but all the others sounded the same.
Pogues appear as first repeat artists to my knowledge.... Not sure this album is unique to qualify as 'must hear'. Good but.....
The verse and musicianship are great.
false
Had to listen to it on the day I had my biggest fuc*ing hangover in years. I think it's good at what it does which is unfortunately not my taste
Not bad, although not really my thing
WHO’S FOR REN FEST?!!
Nota: 5/10 Data: 10/01/2025
Good fun, excellent poetry, poignant ballads. Very listenable.
Brings back so much childhood nostalgia for me. Used to ask my dad to play this album in the car and always loved it. Some pretty mediocre album tracks in there amongst the gems so 3/5 it is for me. Tin Whistle makes me want to drink Guinness with mates in an Irish pub. Also find it mad that the Pogues & Kirsty wrote a Christmas song so ridiculously good that you can enjoy it in mid-February.
Some absolutely wildcard tunes in here (some miss, some bang), but actually quite impressed that the album doesn't just fade into a cloud of Irish jigs. Happy with it.
funny
Tiocfiadh alright
It's a good album, but none of the songs really grab me like those from rum, sodomy, and the lash. Still a very fun genre to listen to, and the Christmas song is quickly growing on me Saved: Turkish Song of the Damned, Fairytale of New York
I think this is pretty good, but I don't really like Celtic Punk very much.
Very Irish.
Quite enjoyed it actually
My Irish connections won't be pleased about this, but I'm not a huge fan of this. 6/10
I think this was the first album by The Pogues I've listened to. It was good, but as expected. Didn't know Fiesta was one of their songs so that was a nice surprise, but nothing there to push this above a 3.
Less punk than previous efforts, still pretty good.
Some solid stuff on this album, though this isn’t typically what I go out of my way to listen to. Still an enjoyable experience
Folk. Celta
Dropkick vibes
was alright
"Fairytale of New York" remains The Pogues' best known and best-selling single. It was named after J.P. Donleavy's 1973 novel A Fairy Tale of New York which Finer had been reading in the studio when the song was first written.[8] The song dated back to 1985 when Finer had written the original melody and lyrics, about a sailor looking out over the ocean, but he admitted that his lyrics had been terrible and MacGowan had come up with a better storyline of a couple arguing in New York City at Christmas time.[6] MacGowan had always intended the song to be sung as a duet, originally with O'Riordan providing the female vocal part, but despite attempts to record "Fairytale of New York" in January 1986 during the sessions for Poguetry in Motion, the band were unhappy with the results and abandoned the song.[9] During the sessions for the third album at RAK in May 1987, MacGowan recorded new guide vocals for the song but with O'Riordan's departure it now had no female vocalist. Lillywhite took the tapes home and recorded his singer-songwriter wife Kirsty MacColl singing the female lines: when he brought them back to the studio The Pogues were so impressed that the song was re-recorded with MacColl as the replacement singing partner for MacGowan.[8] "Fairytale of New York" was released as the album's lead single in November 1987 in the run-up to Christmas and reached number one in Ireland and number two in the UK. Its enduring popularity has seen it re-enter the charts several times since 1987, eventually going on to sell over a million copies in the UK[10] and being voted the most popular Christmas-themed song of all time.
Really good album, none of the songs were bad. Celtic folk punk, sea shanty vibes. Fairytale of New York, Turkish Song of the Damned, Streets of Sorrow, The Recruiting Sergeant and Thousands Are Sailing are the best.
once again not for me, but i understand why people would like it.
Irish ska. Feels like it could be the soundtrack to Mario party
Classic Irish album, for the right setting. Highlights: Fairytale of New York Streets of Sorrow Lullaby of London Ballad of March Medley Irish Rover Shanne Bradley
It’s not that it is bad but you have to really be in the mood for Irish rock
It's fine but Irish music is not really my jam. I liked the song with all the fucks. 2.5 rounded up.
Wasn't looking forward to it but again pleasantly surprised. Hasn't cured my aversion to fiddles or banjos but didn't hate it. Loved the Dubliners bits
Breads enjoyed this. Cheese did not.
Irish rock... man the early 90s/late 80s were a weird time. Hard to imagine people getting amped about this music the present day. This record gave us Fairytale of New York, one of my Xmas classics
Nice little album with a real range of songs. Worms is a strange ending, but 'The Broad Majestic Shannon' and 'The Streets of Sorrow' are great along with, of course, the timeless 'Fairytale of New York'. A interesting insight into Irish (folk?) music, but not quite enough clicking with me on this album to give it a 4.
It just keeps going
No wonder their biggest hit had a different singer
Love how the album kicks off. Im dancing and feeling Irish to short tunes Gotta say, I burned out quickly on the punk vibe, but I didnt hate it. Somewhere around the 2.5 star mark
Ja fairytale of new york är bra, men resten är väldigt enformigt
Pretty good Irish music but I couldn’t get into it
This was a tough one to get through, and it definitely cant beat Rum Sodomy and the Lash
it's ok i guess, but not my thing
korralik iiiri lärm
Not my jam but I appreciate it's passion and existence
I feel like a king being entertained by his jesters
🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Not my kinda music tbh
Its fun for two songs and then it gets stale. Just a little to mutch for me. The irish foldband didnt hit for me.
It’s cool but I don’t think I’d return to it tbh
tend to put these on on my morning commute. couldn't quite do it. asked a coworker, she knows them as a bar band. i think that felt right.
The P-oh-gs. I have today gained awareness of an unforeseen Platonic ideal: Celtic folk-punk. It takes me back to this Shrek game I used to play on my grandparents' PS1, which had a kickin' Irish soundtrack that just went on and on and on--a strange connection, but a madeleine to pleasant aimless summer days nevertheless. I struggle to name a mood when I'd seek this out, but I appreciate the storytelling, adventurousness, and especially the more tender songs..."Fairytale of New York" and "Thousands Are Sailing."
A little Pogues goes a long way for me, and this time even a little was too long. I own Pogues’ records and have seen them twice live (once with Joe Strummer instead of Shane MacGowan), so there is some love for the band. Their Irish reels meet punk sensibilities meet heartbreaking drinking odes have connected to a decent extent with me in the past. However, if The Pogues are great music when drinking, this listening felt more like a hangover. I literally came close to dizziness cycling through the first three songs, which all seemed to feature the ring-a-round Pogues sound until I was falling down. I was glad “Fairytale of New York” came on to steady myself. It was great that the Pogues had a hit that bought them houses, but I have never been a big fan of this song. Scrooge I forever will be. Other Pogues’ records presented their unique mix in a more exciting manner. I also did not find the ballads on If I Should Fall By the Grace of God as tender as other Pogues’ cuts. They could not reach their own depths, let alone someone like Tom Waits. Lacking the revelry and despair that the music requires, I have to give this album a low rating.
The Broad Majestic Shannon is exactly Fairytale of New York. Classic Jesus and Mary Chain move. You have to respect it. 2.4/5
2 sterne
This challenge has showed me I do in fact like the pogues, loved their debut when that appeared! But this wasn’t a must listen at all. Although I did enjoy getting to listen to Fairytale of New York guilt free in May.
But really WHO is listening to this Just not for me.
No. 2 stars
Nothing wrong with it, just not my thing.
Hello, I am 2% Irish
PLEASE LISTEN TO THE IRISH ROVER IS SO FUN
not my vibe and wow that Christmas song was fucked
Too much jig music
Standouts Shanne Bradley
Ei iskenyt hirveästi. 2/5.
There are some good songs on here but a lot of them are very similar. Maybe I haven’t listened to enough Irish folk music or whatever but I wasn’t huge on this album.
Did not enjoy. Every song was exactly the same I could barely finish this out of bordeom. I was gonna give it a 1 but then I realised id still rather listen to this than the white stripes album so it gets a 2.
Pish
I found out that I was going to listening to Irish punk I was really excited to see what it would sound like. I was not expecting Pirate music. This album was pretty enjoyable especially in the early tracks. It had a lot of energy and sounded fun especially if it were to be live music. The one major problem with this album Is that it drags. I felt like I was done with it about 40 minutes in then I had another 30 minutes to go. That might be more of a problem with me though. I don't particularly enjoy the lead singer's voice although it did fit the music well. I don't know much about Irish history but this album has got me interested in learning about it threw the lyrics. I would give this album a strong 6 to a light 7
I can’t get behind Irish sounding music honestly if I liked it I’m sure it would be high up there but that’s just me
Funny pero no lo escucharía seguido
just 2 songs in but I can say this is so much different from what I usually listen, nit complaining I’m vibing with it
in the same way i wouldn’t be surprised if a european didn’t enjoy a mask and i album i think its okay that i didn’t enjoy this album. Not to discredit the talent of the album nor the band, it just wasn’t made for me. I found myself moving to some songs but i don’t ever see myself being in the mood to listen to this genre.
Meh
I don't like this. Just comes off as corny and inauthentic to me. I'd prefer normal Celtic folk without the rock
Favourite Songs: Bottle Of Smoke Fiesta
2.5 - Okay so I would pretty much never listen to this unless it was to fit a specific, almost cliche mood (think day drinking or keeping something upbeat and in the sunshine). But I can definitely respect this album. So solid middle of the road 5/10. Fav Songs: If I should fall from grace with god // Medley: The Recruiting Sergeant...
Nicht kater-geeignet. Trieb mich an den Rande des Wahnsinns
Some songs were bangers. Some dabbled in genres they had no business dabbling in... Plus they lose points for an earnest f-slur. 4/10
Irish music outside of blind drunk St Patty's grates the tips of nerve endings.
this album is kinda long
should obviously be heard drunk in a pub
Not for me
Yeah, this was ok. Much better than the American shit on here.
eh it was fun and i liked bottle of smoke and medley but overall not my favourite
didn't expect to be listening to fairytale in new york in march (& wasn't sure what to expect beyond that) i did not like this album. it felt like the mix & the singer's technique were conspiring against my ability to discern any lyics whatsoever. also i usually feel bad disliking any type of folk or traditional music but turkish song of the damned was a pisstake of balkan folk so i feel like im allowed to say i do not like pirate music never have never will can only rly tolerate accordeon in balkan music and even then sparingly i kept checking how many songs i had left and being annoyed at the number... honestly the only reason i'm not giving it a 1 is bc the lyrics WERE good whenever i checked what the guy was saying. took me an entire day and a half to make it through this album but damn it im a completionist
It was a rare occurrence that I could understand what was being said on this album. However, when I could understand, I thought the lyrics were pretty good. I think around three of the tracks were exclusively instrumental, which I'm never a fan of. And the Christmas song felt very out of place to me, but it wasn't that bad. Overall none of the songs were that bad, but after like three in this genre I was getting sick of it. Two stars. (Favorite track: Thousands Are Sailing.)
This album was fun for about 10 minutes. I enjoy a little bit of the Irish pub vibe, but this was just a bit too much for me. I also really didn't like the vocals. They were hard to understand at times which made the songs lose some impact (couldn't make out the lyrics). Overall, this is sort of fun in a short burst, but for a casual hour long listen? Not really.
Musically ok... Vocally...
I think these are perfect songs if you’re hammered and wanna break stuff. They’re kinda like an Irish version of rage against the machine. So perfect if you want to stick it to the man.
I appreciate the style and the audience it appeals to, but it's not for me. Fairytale of New York isn't enough, sorry.
What in the oriental sea shanty-esque pop rock is this. I mean it's definitely mind blowing but i can't think of a single context i'd rock this and be like "Yee haw pirate this is the shit"
I really wanted to like this album, but as soon as the vocalist opens his mouth, I can’t stand it. The rest of the band is great but the vocalist sounds like a drunkard with chronic diarrhea. The only tolerable song to me was Metropolis, and I don’t know if I actually enjoyed the song itself or just the reprieve from the singer.
All of the songs could have been great if the guy just sang normal. Love the instrumentation, love the energy, but the vocalist is just so, so bad I cannot get past it. I’m not normally one for instrumentals, but this album would be actively better if he just wasn’t in it. My favorite song on the album is Metropolis, because the singer isn’t there. I also think the hit of the album is a hit in part because it is a duet with a woman who actually sings like a normal person.
It’s a decent Irish folk album. The instrumentals sound nice sometimes but mainly boring. Shane sounded like a really annoying old man, he just sounded terrible. I only liked two songs and the majority of the listen was me just waiting for it to be over.
Wow, these guys sound just like Flogging Molly! (just kidding, I know who came first here.) Seriously, It's a fine album, when you're in the mood for a little Irish music. It's not in the main rotation, but every once in a while (like mid March, let's say) it's not a bad thing to pull out and play.
honestly couldn’t get through this one but i’m always a fan of a fun irish jig
Hard to understand and docked a star for using the f slur.
top 3 - Fairytale of New York, Metropolis, Thousands Are Sailing. Wasn’t into it + wasn’t in the mood for music I hear anytime I go into town. Fairytale of New York is a classic though! The vibes on this are great as well.
I like the sad drunk songs much more than the happy drunk songs
some cool songs pirate vibe but not my style
I didn't like this, it went too long and the songs all sounded too similar.
Wanted to enjoy this one more
Not into it
Not terrible but was not in the mood for it
not my type
I was high while listening to this, a problem i have with it is that it's very repetitive, got reaaallly bored after a while, 4/10
Praised for it song writing but for me it's lost the bravado of Rum, Sodomy and the lash. I found it a bit samey, all right for a night at the pub but that's about it
i'll never listen to ts
Not my style of music
This is definitely not my cup of tea. Like, AT ALL. I can appreciate this style and that it's something different, far from everything else I've listened, but I don't like it.
Fairytale of New York is a gem, but otherwise this is a real slog. Too many songs that sound the same, too many odd diversions, and far too long
no doubt they are skilled and talented musicians, but this sound/genre is NOT for me so no listening joy. That xmas song is always touching, but they play it for 2mos straight so it's kind of ruined : )
Okayyy Celtic punk!!! Also jazzy? Favourite track: Fiesta
Not for me
There is a time and place for this music. At work or having any kind focus or energy does not match this music.
This was fun but it was also a lot. I think I would’ve enjoyed the songs more if they were isolated but because it’s a longer album I found it to be a bit exhausting. I felt the same way, fun listen but would not do it again, maybe just one song or two. Fav song: Mountain dew or battle march medley
-1 for hate speech
Some fun songs, but I can only listen to this for like 10 minutes. 1 hour was painful.
A bit better than the last pogues album but that’s only really because of fairytale of newyork
Irish Rock Album Wenig Interesse von meiner seite
Difficult to understand lyrics and kinda samey.
I respect the talent of this band, but like with most Irish Folk Rock and Pub Rock it is a good thing when you are in the mood at a party... in a pub. Listening to this on the length of an album is really not my coup of tea.
Esee estilo de som realmente não me pegou.
Irish jams, a mumford band. Turkish song of the damned was fun.
i liked the variety but i didn't like the songs themselves
80’s Folk ⭐️Bottle of Smoke
not for me
Some good vibes, but not for me
This is kind of a mixed bag for me. I wouldn't say there's any songs I dislike, it just doesn't feel like they all belong on the same album. It's a fun time, it's just not the most cohesive album.
Just really not for me
Arrrrghhh 🏴☠️
I love the Irish I love the punk I shared with Ella and Gus on the way to the hockey game, particularly the Christmas song just reminded me of my teenage hood and was very fun
3/10… folk punk / celtic rock / *1988
Didn’t need to be expanded.
Fairytale of New York is a banger but it's a bit too novelty for me.
Good for movies about class struggles and sinking ships. Also good for dancing cartoons. But not for me.
Fairytale of New York is a great song. And then there’s an hour of other music. The music itself didn’t really appeal to me and then his voice made it even worse, think I’m happy leaving this album liking as many pogues songs as I did before I heard it. Favourite song: Fairytale of New York Least: Worms
I didn’t really like it it wasn’t my vibe
not for me. i wouldnt listen to this willingly but 2 stars because this is art to someone else
Música de payasos. GG go next
very irish
This isn't a bad album, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I wasn't able to make it past track 12. As a participant in choirs since I was 10, I've heard one too many sea shanties. I think The Pogues express the concept very well. Favorite(s): Fairytale of New York. I hate that the one I liked has a bad slur in it.
Nope
Very specific style of music but reminded me of my mother and felt nostalgic. I enjoyed the listen but probably won’t return to it frequently.
The move away from their punk roots here is not for the better, imo. Fairytale IS a great song, if rather overplayed these days, and the title track isn't bad, but there is little else here of much note. It feels like they could only get Shane to function in front of a mic for a certain amount of time, and so there is a lot of 'trad' filler here, with other vocalists. The whole thing feels rather front-loaded, and soon starts to wear thin.
I'm going to give this a 2 but that doesn't mean I didn't like it, just not my thing
This is the exact music I want to turn off when I hear. I listened to all of it - time seemed to drag during the whole thing. Good for them - this sounded well made for that type of music.
I got so sick of this by about track 3. Too bad there are 19
Too busy - middle of the road drinking jigs to begin with - some of later tracks made up for it - Fairytale is the redeemer only 2 from me
Wow. “Fairytale of New York.” I had to go back and listen to the first minute or so again- THIS GUY? This is some of the worst singing I’ve ever heard in my life. My god. My other issue with this is that it feels so….panicky. This is not music for the anxious. This is for people who don’t have enough to worry about so they listen to this to stress out? And it’s 19 songs? What the fuck? TWO STARS
Euh.. no. It was fun for a while but then it becomes a bit tiring and I don't see myself going back to it. I liked the christmas song though.
An hour was far too long. (2/5)
Good musicianship, but not my jam.
Fairytale of New York
- nuorempana tämmöttine musiikki oli ihan mielenkiintosta koska "oo ne soittaa perinteisellä tyylillä mutta modernia musiikkia this must be interesting" mut eipä tällasta enää nykyään oikein jaksa kuunnella - on tällä varmaan kulttuurista arvoa ja kaikkee mutta ei mun kuppi kuumaa
if i should fall from grace with god- 5/10 banjo type music turkish song of the damned- 5/10 bottle of smoke- 3/10 very upbeat fairytale of new york- 5/10 slow, the man just doesnt sound good singing metropolis- 4/10 very upbeat, sounds like a renaissance fair mixed with james bond thousands are sailing-3/10 just kinda boring fiesta-4/10 nice slow jazzy vibe then went upbeat and plugged to a bad song medley-3/10 very irish streets of sorrow- 4/10 sad song, the guy doesn't have a nice singing voice though lullaby of london- 3/10 good music its his voice that ruins it sit down by the fire- 4/10 the broad majestic shannon- all these songs sound the same worms-0/10 there was no point to this “song” the battle march medley- 0/10 sounds exactly like the other songs the irish rover- 0/10 no mountain dew-didnt wanna listen to it shanne bradley- didnt wanna listen to it sketches of spain- didnt wanna listen to it south australia- didnt wanna listen to it
Fine format Patrick’s Day playlist
This is pop, but it’s like some kind of cheesy pop that is not great. Like it’s got a twang? Like cheesy British Christmas music?
Shite pirate music
Strange one. I enjoyed this more than I remembered. But basically just Irish folkish. Musicians actually very good, but SM can’t sing. Best tracks are those where he shuts try or is drowned out. Sort of stuff it’s ok to hear drunk in a smoky bar…but out of place in list.
it’s can be great and not my thing
Think Dropkick Murphys but less angry and more Irish. And like a Renaissance fair, but not a fairy in sight. So like an Irish dance party. I don't think I could tell you most of the lyrics, but it's a vibe. If you ever are craving the sounds of an Irish pub, look no further. Easy 2.5/5 2/5 6.12/10
Proscht
It doesn't do much for me. The Waterboys are better.
Group of Irish men singing jolly songs
Sounds very corny, like it would appear in some pirate parody skits. The punk label of this one was very misleading. There's a f-bomb on the fourth song, which makes me question: Was it satire? Was this whole tthing satire? Well, I don't really care, but if it was, it was not funny, and I sure as hell didn't laugh
I'd happily never hear Fairytale again...
Two wild.
Sounds dated but still I can see why some people may still enjoy it.
I'll listen to this in an Irish pub, or driving around in a clown car, otherwise I'm not really interested.
The lyrics change every few minutes but its still the same song. Except when it isn't, and then it's worse.
This feels like a Jimi Reid special. It certainly has a time and place, but it's infrequent. In our 20s getting ready for a St Patty's bash.
Too piratey
Wasn't feeling it. 2/5
Irlandese. No ti prego
this review is impacted by the recency bias of listening to an irish folk album the day before
please no
My tolerance for Irish folk music is about half a song.
Too diddly dee
Not my bag. The Pogues are probably my least favorite thing about St. Patrick’s Day. Shave off a half-star for all the terrible Irish-Punk bands that were influenced (and straight-up copied) by them.
I met a guy in a Pogues cover band. Props for being so into them! It's just not for me though.
I can’t do a whole album of this type of music 😅
I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, it was very long and I didn’t finish it.
Post battle victory at a tavern. Would be a fun album if I knew the lyrics to all songs. Favorite song: n/a
Not for me
Look, there might be a context where I jam my ass off to a couple of songs on here, but I gotta rate this as an album, and this is just too much Pogues!! I tapped out around track 14/19. Mind you, they're very good at what they do, and individually these are all pretty fun! I did also enjoy the genre fusions they threw in here and there. I would not see myself revisiting it as a personal listen however. Standouts: Metropolis • Fiesta • Sketches of Spain
Got a bit repetitive
Disappointingly traditional. One perennial Christmas banger, a decent party novelty track and the rest of the originals are propped up by MacGowan's lyrics and punky delivery. Spirited performances throughout, but the songs are just not that special.
Some parts hit a 3 or 4 for me, but it then some songs really didn't work for me (the broad majestic Shannon for example) and so felt really inconsistent.
Listening to Fairytale Of New York in September was a bizzare feeling for starters, and the “Celtic Punk” genre definitely isn’t for me. The Irish folk influence is prominent throughout with some punk sprinkled in to give the album energy. But despite having my favourite Christmas song on the album, it’s not doing it for me.
just because you can, doesn't mean you should. jig music
Not for me
Obviously fairy tale of new York is good but the rest of the album is all over the place.
It's fun for a song or two, but not for a whole album.
Listenable but long and detracted from my enjoyment.
This album transports me back to my college— a local bar had “Irish Nights” with a guy who sang folky songs like this. Honestly he probably covered a few of these songs and I had no idea. For the nostalgia factor there I did think the album was fine, but definitely a tad too long.
A 1 if it wasn't for a legit listenable Christmas song
Stand alone the songs are strong. As an album they are much of a muchness.
Pirate music! No from me. I recognised the Christmas song though
1h 3min Mittelaltermarkt. Da wünscht man sich die Pest zurück.
Since I know that I can hear Fairytale at will one month a year for the rest of my life, this album will not be troubling me any longer.
Surprisingly tight instrumentation despite the singers famously loose and snotty vocals. Each Track is like a swig on a bottle of whiskey and an enthusiastic stumble down the street. One song throws in some middle Eastern influences, another sounds like a noir detective car chase through Chicago - they certainly keep things interesting. 'Fiesta' is lifted straight from a Spanish fairground jingle which you will no doubt recognise from somewhere. Although other influences are thrown in to the mix, ultimately if you don't enjoy traditional Irish music, you won't like this - which is why I tapped out halfway through. But I appreciate the variety of this album. Oh, and this is the record with 'Fairytale...' on it, so that's probably why this one is on the list.
Was cool to hear, has never heard of these guys. Probably wouldn't listen to outside of st pattys day
Could not make it through the 3rd song, a thick Irish accent singing a Christmas song is as goofy as it is bad. Stopped so spotify does not recommend me more like this. not good 2/5
Some good Irish jigs. Fun album but not much stood out to me. Had some slower songs to change the feel. Can’t say I’d go back to really listen to much of them but it was a good change of pace for a different genre to listen to. Overall, it’s mid and about a 2.5 star.
This is really hard because it’s probably an objectively well-made album, it’s just not my cup of Guinness.
Respect it but not my thing
totally not irish
Not really my style, but I see the appeal
Not opposed to folk nor punk, but this really doesn't do it for me. I do like the idea behind this band though.
Celtic Rock
Heard lots by the pogues, but cool to hear a whole album. I didn't really like the slow songs, but the others were great. This isn't something I'd pick out to listen on my own, but we listen to them in my family a lot so it feels familiar. All the instruments they use are cool, and I liked the instrumental bits. Most of the songs were new to me. Only reason I liked it was for the sound and thats it's familiar to me. 4.5/10
It gets some credit for being crazy with its style and genres, but this is almost mostly just not for me. And I really have a hard time picking out anything that really makes it great. It just goes on for so long. The Mountain Dew song made me chuckle a bit. The soda had to be around by now, right? Favorite Song(s): Thousands Are Sailing
No private session used for Spotify. Folk punk really isn't my thing, it sounds like Christmas. Too many songs on this album and as long as we are talking about excess, there are too many people in this band playing too many instruments at the same time.
The Pogues don't really do it for me. But this author is totally down with 'em. They're not bad. I do wonder if the author intended this list to be all 5 star albums in their opinion. For all I know, this could be the absolute undeniable best album of the Celtic Punk genre, and to be fair, it probably is. Nothing stood out to me though, actually I take that back. They said an offensive word in Fairy Tale from New York. Different times and all that, but... it certainly detracts from any 'cool punk vibes' they may have been going for.
de ersti song chli hektisch und d singstimm gfallt mer nöd so. di arabisch aghuuchte harmonie im zweite song gfalled mir no guet. sini stimm immernonig, aber im zweite song findis recht amüsant, sone metal-stimm mit dene harmonie z ghöre und gliichzitig wird de song sochli seemännisch und am schluss wegem rhythmuswechsel plötzlich irisch. bi bottle of smoke denki eif wiiterhin hä? wtf isch das? und denn de kontrast zu fairytale of new york wo so ruhig isch. wild. aber er cha wükli nöd singe. d sängerin biz besser. aber spötistens bim nöchste song ischs mer langsam gnueg irischi hektik. wiiter hani ehrlichgseit nöd möge lose
I always felt they were a bit of a novelty act, but, you can't deny the musicality. High 2s.
That was okay
Fine in small doses, but a full album is too much for me. It's drunk Irish music. Wasn't all that exciting, but I didn't hate it. Maybe it can be on in the background on St. Patrick's Day?
Musically- no surprises. Lyrically- irreverent. Sounds like a drunken family get together to “discuss” politics.
2.5
Perfect music to rock in the shire, to dance to with your leprechaun friends or to raid a boat to. Unfortunatly I am neither a hobbit, a pirate nor do i know any magical goblins. Also don't celebrate St Patricks day. I respect their craft, but would not know when to put this record on.
Not for me. Just personal. Some of my friends would unfriend me for this.
Very fun album for the first few songs but, unfortunately, the musically style wore thin very quickly for me. I especially enjoyed the Christmas song, very… interesting take on a holiday song.
I've learned that I dislike the sound of almost every Celtic instrument and this album features them all. I feel guilty not liking this album because it seems like a very earnest endeavor and reflects a lot of passion. Alas, it's not enough.
Don't really my cup of team, some songs are interesting tho 2/5
Interesting at first, lost its appeal fairly quickly. No songs to come back to, not bad, just not for me.
Some songs were good and some songs weren't as good! I think in the right circumstances this could be very fun!
I hate christmas and therefore I hate christmas music. This does feature christmas music and one of the most annoying christmas songs ever. Otherwise it doesn't completely suck.
Ehhh not what I woulda picked from them
Just couldn’t get through all the songs. Don’t judge. …
Ugh. Irish folk punk? I have lived this long without knowing this existed and could have lived the remainder of my life without knowing that this existed. Why is it over an hour long?!!
Just can't get into these guys and I don't know why.
2.5 i liked the other album of theirs i heard more
I love Fairytale of New York but Shane McGowan’s voice is something I do not like.

Honestly I do like this but because it's such a distinct sound, it all starts to blend together for me. It's just too much of the same sound listening to an entire album.
Eh, it's ok, most of the songs sound the same to me. That's not to say they're necessarily bad, but 19 tracks of it is a bit much all at once. The obvious highlight is Fairytale of New York.
I really thought I'd enjoy this... I was wrong. Too much going on, a musical version of my ADHD before medication. Try as I might, I just couldn't finish.
Their third album. Irish Folk / Punk. I love the energy of the album and Fairytale Of New York is a classic Christmas No.1 and fantastic song. Other than that the album is a lot of diddley dee, diddley doo over and over again. Great music if you're on the piss in an Irish pub. Fiesta is a well known punchy track.
Irish/Celtic/folk/punk is not my style but it does seem to set the tone for a lot of music released over the next several decades.
Not my taste overall but some of the songs are alright
Irish rock/ folk. Not bad but not my thing. I might like it better if it was a bit 'rockier'
I didn't like this album. A couple of the songs were really catchy, but overall it felt really repetitive and maybe a bit too upbeat for me. 2.5
- they are the fairytale of new york people! - metropolis also sounds like going insane - there is a comfort in the celtic vibes to it but I mostly found it overwhelming to listen to! would be good for fairy ball. - 3/5 by my previous system but now i’m giving it 2/5
sea of thieves Type shit
It’s Irish rock music alright. It’s fine, but every band that plays this kind of music sounds exactly the same. I definitely didn’t need 19 songs on this album.
I managed to make it through the whole album
Tulee mieleen paikoitellen Frank Turner, mutta pääosin perinteistä irkkurallatusta
I don't gel too well with the irish folk punk fusion. That being said the album makes an adequate delivery.
Music’s okay at best, voice sucks and the mix is garbage. No thanks.
not my thing
This is an album that swings between brilliance and chaos, often landing in the latter. While the band’s signature fusion of Irish folk and punk energy is still intact, much of the album feels uneven and unfocused. Shane MacGowan's slurred delivery, while charming in doses, wears thin across an album that lacks the cohesion or spark of their earlier work. The production can be muddy, the pacing erratic, and too many tracks feel like filler rather than folk-punk fire. That said, "Fairytale of New York" is the clear standout — a bittersweet, beautifully messy duet that captures everything the band is capable of when they hit the mark. Unfortunately, it’s the rare gem in a collection that otherwise struggles to leave a lasting impression. Favorite song: Fairytale of New York"
I tried, I really wanted to like this, but it's just not my thing 🙁
I can see the objective skill here but this one's just not for me!
o.k. but not really my jam.
A bit too big of a jump between genres for this album to feel cohesive. I much prefer rum, sodomy and the lash but the songs here are still important.
Not their best and iscncerting to hear a christmas tune in April.
puuh zerst fast d auge verdreiht aber nach 1 min bin ich scho HOOKED vlt auchli wegem huuch vo punk? ui sorry turkish song of the damned gar kein fan, ich glaub ich verstah vo wo dass es chunnt aber iiiihhh HAHAHAHA hä sorry chan gairytale of new york gar nöd ernst neh ahh oke ich han denkt das blibt jz e ballade jo nei chan dem gad würkli sehrsehr wenig abgwünne, es isch nöd gad guet und denn no unglaubliich corny okeeee geg de schluss chanis vt chli meh nachbollzieh aber uäaa metropolis findi de bond-mässig teil seehr cool the pogues more like the popes (fabian reference) hahahahah scho denkt fiesta wird e längsämeri nummere und denn gebets gäse megaa guggemusig lol wnl bin recht abgschweift aber es isch eifach ok I guess? OMG ICH LIEB WORMS HAHAHA ES GIT TROTZDEM ES 2
A solid 2.5 (brought up from 2 bc of the best Xmas song ever)
Makes me want to have a crrrrrrreeeeeamy pint
Kinda *too* folky for me? I like folk rock a lot but not really this style, and it kinda all just blends into one.
