Reviews (page 9 of 12)
A tad orally assaulting. That being said, it has a unique sound, and the fairy tale of new york gets a start itself.
a bit too consistently . erm. irish for me i think…. highlights: bottle of smoke, thousands are sailing, sketches of spain (aug 17 2024)
The celtic sound of this album felt like a nice change of pace. Fairytale of New York and The Broad Majestic Shannon bumped this to a 3.
I got two Pogues albums in a row. Love the sea shanty vibe, but it got a bit boring. BUT, if I were to have to listen to Celtic music, I would put on the Pogues
I think I like this more than I should, and yet not as much as I want to. I like the punk aspects of this; I kind of like the Irish folk; I think they work well together, but it just doesn't click as much as I want it to. 3/5
Celtic Punk is such a funny scene to me. This was a decent listen. One I never would have chosen, but I did like it.
I enjoyed this a lot. Good unique instrumentation and really fun and upbeat. It’s not something I’ll listen to all the time. It’s more of a novelty for me. Some of it was super interesting though. 3.4
Sea shanties turned up to 11. Hints of Zydeco. Lots of energy. All while being thoroughly Irish. It has an experimental feel some of the time when it’s not doing a straight Irish ballad, lament, or drinking song. I really enjoyed Fiesta as a real mix of styles. It gets tiring listening to a whole album but there’s a lot of songs that could be mixed in to a good playlist to change the energy. 2.6

I was not prepared for Fairytale of New York in August. It was all a bit much - I can imagine going to a gig and enjoying the vibe, but not putting it on at home.
If I Should Fall from Grace with God Fairytale of New York Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six
I can almost taste the whiskey while listening to this album. Great atmosphere, gives me a uplifting boost. But it’s a tad long, and I wouldn’t play the album again anytime soon.
Didn't quite hit the consistent high on their other album we've gotten. Still enjoyed it as I like this type of music. Fairytale of New York is a Christmas classic and definitely one I will be coming back to.
The problem with Irish music it sometimes it all blends. A few months ago we reviewed “Rum Sodomy & The Lash“ by the Pogues, and I gave it a 3/5 then. I am going to make my life easy and give myself an easy day and give it the same. I enjoyed the Fairytale of New York with the Kirsten MacColl and the Sir Down by the Fire because they sounded unique for them. Actually. This album deserves a 3/5 anyway!
I love the Pogues. It's like getting a big fuzzy hug from your sarcastic grandmother. Keepin' it real, keepin' it jaunty.
Has some bangers, songs kinda blend together
Really like the title track and really really like thousands sailing. Metropolis is a cool instrumental. Fiesta and New York fairytale both deserving of being hits. Not a huge fan of the genre but didn't mind this, respect the talent and skill of the album. Closing thoughts - I thought the album was incredibly well made, the high points of the album were great, just not a fan of the genre
3.25
A lot of fun. Love the genre term "Celtic punk." I wish I'd been in a better mood when I first listened to it; if you're feeling grumpy, this can be kind of a lot, and it overstays its welcome a bit at some moments. All the performances and songs are totally there, though. I don't meant to be reductive, but this would go nuts at a Renaissance festival. Another album I'd give 3.5 stars if I could; alas, I must round down to be honest about my listening experience. Highlights: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, Fairytale of New York, Thousands Are Sailing, Medley
Honestly, not my kind of music, but it has the utterly timeless "Fairytale of New York" and that alone rises it above a lot of other things.
Pretty good, love the energy. But at over an hour long it gets tiresome.
Combining punk with Irish folk music was pretty ingenious and this had more variety than I would have expected. Wouldn’t listen to it if my own volition though.
Entertaining, for a while at least
Pretty lively album, if not really my style 3/5
When its good, its really good.
Quirky, fun, energetic! An enjoyable listen.
Rich irish folk and punk mix. Perfect for eclectic listening and a good energy boost. Stay warry of the Irish accent and unusual instruments, it may shock and stun the listener. I loved it though. Not my favorite Pogues record though.
Went back and forth on this one. 3.4.
Whatever I was expecting before putting it on, it wasn't this. It's basically Celtic folk, and I love that. Although not great to put on at any occasion, I'm definitely up for this music sometimes... Favourite songs: have to get back to this to listen more closely
The lyrics ruined some fun and interesting music for me.
Fun enough.
Fairytale of New York now identifies as Christmas right? I love that song.
RIP Shane MacGowan - never been a huge fan of the traditional Irish stuff, but can't deny Shane's songwriting and voice - it's iconic!
Ehh it's fine. I enjoy celtic-inspired music but this didn't do it for me.
6/10 This was fine, but there’s a ceiling on how much I’m going to like an album like this Celtic folk rock with occasional flashes of world music. Well produced, well played, sometimes well sung. Vocals don’t do it for me for an entire album’s worth, though Maybe I’m biased: every Friday afternoon for a long time, someone in the warehouse adjoining my office would play a Pogues best of album, and it drove me crazy. At least “Ceazy Old Town” isn’t on this one. But “Fiesta” is Best: Fairy Tale Of New York, obviously
I really like the international influences the Pogues brought together, but it just doesn't have the same umph that Rum Sodomy & The Lash has. Best Songs: Fairytale of New York, Fiesta, The Irish Rover, Worst Songs: Streets of Sorrow..., Worms,
its giving sea shanty but not in a bad way
Porque son The Pogues ....
Fairytale of New York Thousands Are Sailing The Irish Rover
Idk…it definitely makes you appreciate the influence of Irish music on Appalachian musical tradition. At its best it goes folksy protest songs, and it clearly laid some track for the Dropkick Murphies and chant-y punk bands that I might be good but have been ruined by their fandom.
Really enjoyed this album
Fairytale of New York carried this album.
Irish Popfolk
I am happy music like this exists. After four, five songs I am also glad when it's over.
There are a lot of people in this band! Not at ALL what I thought this album was going to sound like, I'll be honest. Love the first track. The end of Turkish Song of the Damned sounds like a renaissance fair (but in a good way?). What genre is this? Are they British? Apparently its Celtic Folk Punk and they are in fact British. Insane vibe switch from Bottle of Smoke to Fairytale of New York. I actually already had this song on THE ULTIMATE. Just wanted to say. Really beautiful Christmas duet though. Wait did they just say the f-slur?? Metropolis sounds like a Welsh spy movie (surely such a thing exists, right?). Thousands Are Sailing might be my favorite track yet. Halfway through and feeling like it might be a bit long. Worms could have and should have been cut. Liked this though pretty fun. Feels like a culture I am not apart of and know nothing about.
A bop. Weird they just stuck Fairytale of New York in the middle though.
like a bunch of old drunks in an irish pub
i have no clue what he's saying but go off king might not be an all time fav but irish punks certainly did not come to play bit of sea shanty vibes at times too
as Anatoly Dyatlov once famously said: not great not bad
I used to own this album and I listened to it a bit. But I never really loved as much as I feel like I am supposed to…. Listening to it now it suffers a bit from 80’s production and could be more impactful stripped down with a raw sound.
Unique. I approve.
For how many times I’ve listened to Fairy Tale of New York around the holidays I’ve never listened to any other songs on this album. It was more eclectic than I anticipated. Metropolis was a wild mash up Celtic folk and the Peter Gun Theme from the Blues Brothers. Otherwise I didn’t feel the need to go back for more listens.
The soundtrack for Ireland if Disney added it to Epcot…
obviously the drunk tank song slaps
It's good, but not something I would listen to unless I was in a certain mood. Very fun music with a lot of personality.
Presses play - Jesus Christ I can’t believe I need to listen to this for an hour. It’s not bad - it’s a genre and clearly there is a market for it but this like this is solely for a bar on st Patrick’s day or a movie soundtrack.
It's a 3 from me. A fun time but thoughtful too.
Shane MacGowan was a great singer for this band and it's too bad that everyone has had to listen to a thousand distorted power chord Celtic punk bands with singers from North America trying to sound like Shane MacGowan and it's too bad that everyone has had to listen to a thousand uninspired zero-dynamics revivalist/traditionalist groups, maybe with rock drums added to make the rhythm extra dull I like the Pogues ok for a few songs and I wish I liked them more. music: regarded. (⌐☘_☘)
It's okay, I think i was maaaaybe expecting it to be a little better, but it's absolutely fine. I could do without hearing Fairytale of New York again, its fine, but overplayed to the absolute maximum. Fiesta was very good, some of the other tunes were good, but overall just ok low 3?
This record was a lot of fun, unique in is blend of Irish folk music and punk attitude. Interesting for the first listen but then not nearly as exciting on subsequent plays. Good record, but it'll be rare for me to feel the need to come back. Three stars.
Fairy tail of New York makes it
This was much more solid than I thought it would be looking at the cover. Love me some Irish influenced music
Love this punk Irish ‘flogging Molly’ esq band, gets me in the mood for a bar fight. 3.0
It was interesting! Definitely more upbeat and very... Pirate like
Nice change up, it's different, it didn't capture me.
Liked this. 3.06
Rewatched Leap Year and booked my next trip to Ireland
Fairytale of New York is a classic song. Really like the lead song, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, too.
I dig the punk-folk hybrid; great energy. Some songs hit more than others - will definitely save a couple of songs!
too Irish for me
Ok. Best tracks Fairytale of NY and The Irish Rover 3/5
interesante mezcla de punk y folk irlandés/brit, escuchar esto me hizo tener los dientes horribles
This was better than the last Pogues album we got but it’s really kind of just the same some over and over for an hour. Another Christmas song for some reason. I liked the part where the lead singer got too drunk to sing anymore so for half the album so other guy comes in and sings and then theres like 5 songs with no singing so I guess that guy got too drunk to sing too and the band was like well I guess we will just jam for a bit. 6/10
First time listening to this genre of music. It wasn't bad, but I can't really see myself going out of my way to listen to this album anytime soon. My favourite song is "Fiesta".
Excellent for the genre, but for me it's a time and place type of music - live gig in a pub with a pint. Too frenetic to listen to all at once at home! So scoring based on own listening preferences.
# 221 : Good foot stomping album, I like it, something different from what I have had so far on this list, I probably wouldn't buy this, but I'd listen to it again… Favourite Track : South Australia
Would be great fun live in an Irish pub. Difficult to listen to more than an hour though
Hug+Kiss Murphy's
This is the second Pogues album I have gotten, and both time's it's been a unique case of good idea, good execution, but just not for me. There are 1 star albums I have rated that I got through easier than this. I still respect the musicianship though, and on the right day, it would probably be a fun listen.
I mean, I’M into it, but I see why on release there might’ve been other upset Irish people pissed that you bastardized the Irish music sound. From an outsider’s point of view, I think it sounds like most Irish bands today, so maybe don’t be worried about tradition so much? Times change, so maybe you need a weird anguishing yell occasionally to keep the ball rolling.
I like it, but in the same way I like Pirates of The Caribbean. It's not objectively the best music in the world, but it's super fun story telling and just brings a very specific energy that is very unique.
Pretty upbeat Irish pop. Reminds me of Mary Prankster. Feista has a Latin flavor.
So!
I wish Ireland was real
This feels a bit too long and the songs don't really blend to feel like an album but I did enjoy listening and the genre of music makes me want to enjoy it with people.
Some great fun songs on here. Probably best listened to drunk at a party and not really listening. It does what it wants; sitting listening to this alone, analyzing it doesn't make sense. I'll probably listen to most of this again, so I guess a 3.
It was interesting but noy my favorite. Just wasnt in the mood for the irishness
I've never done a deep dive on the Pogues before this, no idea there was Celtic Punk as a genre
This was quite an interesting diversion! While it’s not necessarily music I want to listen to again, it was certainly well done and it definitely belongs on this list. I’m going to give it a respectable 3 stars, mainly because it just didn’t connect to me. But I appreciate that it was something different than what I’m used to, and I can see why some people would connect with it.
Tiene tres o cuatro temas guapos
These angry young Irishmen were awesome and now I want a pint. Kirsy MacColl was a great add!
Fun album, love the Pogues. Fairytale of New York is the greatest Christmas tune.
Sooooo Irish
Pretty darn good
Ay not bad
Enjoyed the songs that were spanish/irish fusion :) Started closer to a 4, ended at a 3.
2,5
I don't mind the style, but 19 songs of it is probably pushing the limits of how much I'm willing to listen to it in one sitting.
Solid way to start off St. Patrick's week. I definitely prefer the instruments over the vocals, but it was an enjoyable listen. 6/10 (3/5)
I actually enjoyed this! I loved that while overall it was Irish punk rock, they brought in influence that sounded like other genres like Latin. Would listen again but not regularly.
Celtic music?
The Pogues are fun to listen to and this is a very good album. It’s not something I am super into or spin very often, but I am glad this band and this album exist. And “Fairytale of New York” makes me cry every time I hear it.
Good but repetitive.
This was always played around Christmas (for obvious reasons) but never listened to the album proper. The Celtic influences speak to my east coast roots, and the zaniness and musicality carry through. Really appreciate this one, and if they could replace the 'non-PC' word in Fairytale it could be a 5. Listened twice: there are some good gems in here, but also with 19 songs, a lot of hoopy doopy doopy in-between
Porque son The Pogues ....
The direct inspiration for Dropkick Murphy's. That bloke in the center is all ears.
Sold this on vinyl for $20 in June of 2020. Have always liked these guys, and this is a decent album. A number of the songs sound pretty similar.
Fun album, fairytale of New York is the greatest Christmas song!
Hadn’t even heard of these guys before and was pleasantly surprised! Need to be in the mood though.
This album was NOT what I was expecting. This sum campy sea shanty Irish jig typa shit. It was a really fun listen, but probably not something I’d return to often (if ever).
Fairytale of NY will always be one of my favorite Christmas songs, but the rest of this album was okay. Songs sounds too much like each other.
Literally pirate rock. In a good way! I don’t see myself frequenting g this album but there is pretty of great stuff to hear. Favorite songs: Fairytale of New York, Thousands are sailing, and lullaby of London
Interesting! I haven't listened to something like this before. But the sounds are cool. After finishing this, this is something i MIGHT come back to, it's cool. Although it's not music I would listen to on a daily basis.
At just over an hour, this album ranks in at the longest one (so far) on my journey. I grew up listening to "ska". More specifically, 2000's white suburban kid ska. I had no idea who The Pogues were until this album. This has an interesting intertwining of musical stylings. Still all something you would expect from a Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly album. I think it's safe for me to say that I liked it, but I didn't love it. I'll definitely mix it into the playlist if I ever decide to return to "ska".
All good stuff and obviously Fairytale of New York is a cracker. Simpsons reference: No
Some stuff I really liked but there was enough stuff that felt like filler that put me off a bit. Would definitely listen to some of the songs again but not the album.
I was having more fun than expected with the first two songs, but then it just went on and on for an hour.
This album is different from what I listen to most of the time. That's not to say it's bad, quite the opposite. If you like Celtic folk music, this will be your thing. I can picture myself walking around Bush Gardens and I hear this music playing (minus the cursing) as I make my way across the Old Country.
I don't know. I believe that it's a great album for it's genre, but I kinda hate the genre!
They were nice but I'd probably not go back for the whole album.
Not really my cup of tea but there were some fun drinking songs on there. I cant understand why their most listened song by a long shot was Fairytale of NY...not a very good song at all. This wont be in rotation but I can see myself blasting a few tracks on St. Paddy's Day
Fun album but a little too long and incohesive. Some fun songs on this album but it's just too long. Repeats: if I should fall from the grace of god, Turkish song of the damned, fairytale of newyork, sit down by the fire Skips:recruiting sergeant, worms, battle March medley
A nice change to my usual music. I liked Fairytale of New York and Mountain Dew the best.
- “what if we put every genre possible into an album and gave it an overall celtic vibe”
Irish jig with a bit of edge. I like it, but won't be on my repeat list
This album still sticks with me. I think I prefer Peace and Love as it always felt a bit more rounded. But still a great album. Kirsty MacColl on the album is a bonus for me.
63/100
A couple of recognisable/memorable tracks
Decent album and got the famous Xmas song in it
I'd like it more if I could hear the vocals. But it was jaunty.
Really felt the Irish pride
Celtic and punk music are a match made in heaven, aren't they? There's something about the punk attitude that screams Ireland, and hearing what could at first listen be sweet, lilting Irish folk music morph into the angry, drunken wailing that makes up much of this album is a whole lotta fun. Lyrically rather funny, and a little grating by the end of the affair. Feels like spending an hour in an Irish pub, for better and for worse. 3.5 stars, probably, but I'm rounding down, because things felt a little one-note by the end.
I've only heard Fairytale of New York before from The Pogues and it doesn't really represent the style they have on this album. It's Irish folk mixed with a punkish style. If I ever have the feeling for some Irish music this would probably be my choice.
Good Listen. Not sure i'd listen to it outside a pub, but I definitely listened here.
Fairy Tale in New York is overrated drunken Christmas fodder but thankfully there’s lots of decent stuff here to make an enjoyable album.
It's fine. Punky enough to earn a passing grade but too Celtic and folky for me to earn higher marks. It would be better to hear this at a British or Irish pub while sipping some Jamesons.
The beauty of doing something like listening to a new album every day for 1001 days is that the chances of me running into stuff like this are high. And I'm sure this won't be the last time I'm left a little confused by an album. When I saw the genre tag of Celtic Rock, I really didn't know what I was expecting. But at that same time, it sounded exactly like I thought it would. Anyone reading this can probably think of what this might sound like in their head right now, and they probably wouldn't be too far off. If I Should Fall From Grace With God might be as Celtic as rock can get. This feels like music pirates might listen to. I can't pretend like this is my thing at all, but I kind of mess with it. What they do on some of these songs sounds super interesting, and they are definitely a talented group of people. Plus I think Celtic punk is a good descriptor, because there are definitely some underlying political themes in these songs, and if you were to replace all of the fancy string instruments they use with more traditional western hard rock instrumentation, this would be a fantastic 80's punk record. I'll give credit where credit is due. I can't imagine myself ever really coming back to listen to any of these songs, but the fact a group of people were ballsy and creative enough to come together and make something like this is really cool.
Enjoyable enough, annoying enough. Typical world music never fails
Meh, kinda samey
Yep. It's Irish folk punk.
Foi um bom album, mas um pouco repetitivo.
Soild Irish folk/punk album, deserves its place on the list.
Tough not to get carried away and stamp your feet into the ground for this one. I could not understand a single word. Except 'Worms'. I unfortunately understood all words of whatever that was.
A couple more bangers and it could've been a 4. Obviously contains the GOAT christmas song
Irish folk punk, is that what this is? It was decent, better than the previous Irish one that came up, The Waterboys. I probably won't listen to it again, though.
A few good tracks in Fairytale of New York, Turkish Song Of The Damned, and Thousands Are Sailing but that's all.
Better than I expected
Pogues at their best. Back then a new take on traditionel Irish folk music. Today still good
3.5
Highlights: If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Turkish Song of the Damned, Fairytale of New York Gets very repetitive after a few songs
Pretty cool sound on this album & great instrumentation throughout, really paved the way forward for Celtic punk, sounds much more modern than 1987 to me. Classic tracks like Fairytale of New York and Ships Are Sailing are standouts, but I did tire a bit of the album by the end. There's just not much variation in the sound, it's one very cool sound and a decent album, but it's a bit too long for as little as it ventures out of that one sound.
Didn't enjoy this as much as I expected to. I guess I only like Pogues music when it is live.
Too much of a nice thing. But, still nice.
It's a Pogues album. If you like this kind of music, you'll love this album. This is one of those "Finest examples of X music" kind of albums. If you're into Irish punk-folk, this is the bees knees. I'm very hot and cold on the genre and therefore the album. So... 3 stars.
Another fun one, though I agree with another review that said this was too much diddly dee
Jamming hard, these boys are.
Bit whiny but ok
What is everyone's aversion to Irish folk, because I'm so dead serious when I say that I loved this. I was in a good mood the whole time. I'd like to grab a couple of pints with these guys- they seem like they know how to have a really good time.
Much better than I thought, just not my thing
Album 53 of 1001 The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God Favorite Track : Fairytale of New York Rating : 3 / 5 Irish Folk/Punk/Rockabilly... Totally unknown to me. Fun listen. Entertaining.
Beautiful songs but a little strident or over the top at times. I can't picture myself being in the mood for this record too often. The more melodic straightforward songs (such as the opener track) are all golden!
Olé los borrachuzos de los pogues (LNB) Sólo puedo decir...Fiesta🍻 (PSP)
Totally not what i was expecting from the album art. Reminded me of Dropkick Murphys. Not my usual go to but not terrible.
Porque son The Pogues ....
I don't like it, but it belongs on the list. Favorite song: Fiesta.
Different but not bad
Too long 2.5
Hyvää aitoa irlantilaista folkki punkkia vahvalla aksentilla
Not their hest
Well the Pogues aren't necessarily my thing and found this a little too jaunty for a Monday BUT I respect it culturally. I can see why others like this but I won't be relistening in the hurry. Time and place
I listened to the extended edition so not sure how much that changes, first half was quite samey throughout, but the second half threw some fun curveballs. Unfortunately the first half does let it down a bit much imo. Also, it just doesn't feel right belting out a Christmas song in April...
Not what I was expecting, for some reason. But when it comes to celtic/irish punk fusion their style is pretty far behind some of the others in my preferences.
6/10 I guess it’s a well made album, but it’s so so cringey for me to listen to
Ehh not really my cup of tea on a best day. A mix of folk, shanties, parody and sad folk. Sad folk, that's a genre I just came up with. Anyhow not my thing, also decidedly WAY TOO LONG Saved tracks: Bottle of Smoke, Medley: The Recruiting Sergeant/ The Rocky Road To Dublin/ Galway Races, Sketches of Spain
Not my style. But well done.
A really enjoyable listen. I’ll probably listen to more now that I’ve been nudged. It was a little odd listening to Fairytale of New York outside of the Christmas build up.
this album shined when the lead singer wasn’t singing. and it was pretty damn good when he wasn’t
This record was surprisingly fun. I could see some of these songs being played in the NHL Slapshot menu or in pubs in St. John's. Not a genre I ever listen to and that probably won't change but it was fun. The album cover made me think it would be a bad listen though. My favourites were "Bottle of Smoke" and the medley on side B. Personal Enjoyment - 7.5 Songwriting - 8 Lyrics - 7.5 Originality - 7 Production Value - 9 Artwork - 5 Overall - 7.6
Kind of funny to listen to. Don't know if I would do the whole album again but a song here or there is maybe okay.
Not there best, but does have one of the best Christmas songs of all time
This was pretty hot and cold for me. I enjoyed the more raucous tunes, but any time things mellowed down and got more folky, Shane MacGowan's voice and/or delivery just didn't do much for me. On average it's a decent record.
I wanted to dislike this, but actually it's pretty good. I know if I listened to it 1-2 more times through I'd like it less though. 3.49/5
The only Pogues song I know is the one they played at the Irish wakes in The Wire, and that isn’t here. This is still good, if pretty samey and not ultimately my thing. But I feel like if I was to own one Irish jig album, this would be it. C
3+ stars, nice album.
I enjoyed the instrumentation of this album, even with the limited range of the vocalist. I did like him singing with the guest vocalists. Strangely, after this album Spotify thought I wanted to hear Christmas songs. That was weird. Anyway, it was definitely a change of pace and with the vocalist, I was surprised that there was a wider range of song styles than I expected. Still, I just don't think I would come back to listen to the entire album all at once, but a song or two on shuffle is pretty nice.
Cool idea and all - Irish folk mixed with punk. I have friends who love bands like the Dropkick Murphy's and would love this. I just don't see what is so exceptional about how it all comes together. A fine listen, but nothing to really hook me or make me go looking for more of their collection. Bottle of Smoke and Streets of Sorrow stood out. Fairytale of New York was an interesting anti-Christmas songs song. Fiesta was a nice bait and switch from soft to punk. The rest just kind of mixed together.
Pleasant enough listen, but too much of same-same throughout. Nothing bad, just not an album I needed to hear before I die. Tracks that caught my ear: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, Turkish Song of the Damned, Battle of Smoke, Metropolis, Streets of Sorrow. Moving on.
To me, The Pogues have always sounded like some random people in Ireland doing a karaoke, not professional singers. But I guess that's part of the charm
Felt like I was in Temple Bar for the whole thing. Fiesta is class. Was going to give it a 2 because I don’t think I’d go back to it/not something I’d lash on in the car but I feel that’s a bit harsh so low 3 for me. Pogue Mahone
Interesting
Pretty good
Surprising.
Was a fun listen but in no hurry to listen a second time.
Ok in short bursts
nice instrumentals but vocals aren't my cup of tea
Pirate rock 🏴☠️
The album with Fairytale in New York on, the best Xmas song ever. Enjoyed the ablum at first, but I wasn't drunk so it got old quick. Too long
Not bad
I can't tell the difference between them and any other irish rock whatever band. It's not bad, but it's just not exceptional in anyway. More likely however, my impatience and lack of emotional connection to music is what explains my mediocre rating.
Another one of those records where I can’t decide if what I just listened to was pure genius, or unadulterated shite….or both.
Catchy celtic rock that probably inspired the Dropkick Murphys
Liked this more than I thought I would. Great energy
Fairytale of New York was a hidden staple of my childhood. Perfect music for if you're a pirate sailing at sea, but I had to stop listening after track 10 because the sound arrangement of each song was getting a bit repetitive for me personally.
Porque son The Pogues ....
Great album. Love the whole genre.
Gonna be honest I just tried laying down in bed with my AirPods and goin thru this before sleep and I tried..I did. But after about 3 songs I can just tell how this album is gonna be. I’m sure there are some standouts on this album, atleast ONE..but man his voice is just unbearable to me. It’s crazy how if Marcus Mumford sang this I’d prolly like it, but nah can’t stay up for this. Musically was cool and I’m sure there are some on this album that I’d like more than the first 3, maybe I’ll revisit. Gonna give a very generous 3 just because I’m sure some people in Europe love this album and this man’s voice, and I don’t wanna disrespect them
Fun! Not sure what the exact breakdown of genres would be but a lot of songs felt like punky Irish shanties; I pictured wooden floors and beer and salt water. I feel like I've heard some of the more upbeat songs in Scorsese films. There was a good variety of styles here too; crazy that "Fairytale of New York" and "Fiesta" were on the same album. But the gritty, charged vocal performance of Spider Stacy (what a name) provided a nice through-line. The band is super tight, that accordion player rips and the strings sound great. There were some moments of more somber beauty in there too, "Shanne Bradley" and "Fairytale of New York" were gorgeous. Not too much else to say, this isn't a type of sound I'm super familiar with but it was great to appreciate The Pogues from a distance. A little bit of appropriation going on maybe but I won't question it too deeply lol. Enjoyed it!
I am enjoying this album! I like the drunken dive bar sound of the lead singer. The musicians are very fun to listen to. They're so versatile and there are so many of them! It just sounds like a whole packed crowd of people playing. I'm enjoying listening to the unison parts, like when the banjo and the mandolin are together. These songs run the gamut. "Fairytale of New York" is too beautiful... such a good duet. A lot of these songs sound like they're in a movie. I like how joyful the music is! I got to the "Sketches of Spain" track and was like ????????. I feel like I'm hearing a folk band stretch its wings and try things out. It's long, and this is a LOT of Irish folk for me to do over two days. But overall very pleasant, at times emotional. Good time was had.
This is the one Pogues album I've listened to extensively. I had a little Pogues love affair as a teen. I left this album behind in the wastebin of a misspent youth, but still kept a bit of the spirit and the dancing which is like the antidote to the dark and stormy Dropkick Murphys. Turkish Song of the Damned is sounding great with the dust knocked off and Fairytale of New York is, of course, the one track I've carried all these years and kept in my Xmas rotation sometimes getting misty of the days gone long with my first girlfriend, Jane and my great friends Lauren and Raphael. Cars big as bars and rivers of gold. Thousands are Sailing is noteworthy. Lullaby of London hits certain note sequences that also bring forth the wellspring of sentimentality. Worms is easily the low point and I assume offered up for humor. As an aside, if you've not been, please hurry and go see Ireland. They are the kindest and most compassionate people in the world. From a cultural and humanistic standpoint, it's the greatest country in the world.
Irish folk punk you say. Reminds me of nights at the pub drinking a wee Guinness or three. I once tried to order a half dozen Irish Car Bombs and got lambasted by the bartender. As I came to realize later, lambasted for good reason. I’m glad to see there is a push to rename it as the Irish Slammer. I hope Irish Slammer sticks because it is a tasty concoction. Seven Drunken Nights was always a favorite tune to hear at the Irish bar along with one where the audience screams, “Alice. Alice. Who the fuck is Alice?” I can never hear the name Alice without internally screaming this chorus. This album reminds me of those fun nights.
I really like the pogues. there’s two pogues albums on the list (which seems a bit much). this one is really good, but the other one has one of my favorite album titles ever “rum, sodomy, and the lash” which is what I image “the pirate life” was really like.
It's a good album... I got into them briefly when I was in middle school... but I have a hard time getting into it now. It's fine but I wouldn't choose to listen to this.
A total cultural work I imagine. I never got into Irish Folk much, there is a sort of punk energy here but I don't find any of it interesting to listen to casually. Now if I were in an Irish Bar? Hell ya.
Not my kind of music. But OK.
Fine but not especially my jam. The faster "jiggy" songs get same-y. Fairytale of NY is, of course, a classic Christmas song these days (just wish it didn't have the F slur).
the rhythmic switch-up in the first song game me aggressive whiplash apparently the lead singer recently said he regrets not joining the IRA as a younger man, which is pretty wicked. this is another blind spot for me, but i'm very glad to have listened to it, because the irish roots mixed with punk sensibilities is pretty damn cool there's an inherent joy that comes with listening to people play music that connects them to their roots - i'm pretty sure i have some irish in me (because my beard is fucking red) but have never connected to any culture on my dad's side of the family, so it doesn't necessarily mean as much to me as it would an irish person, but you can tell these guys really like playing it the sound can get a little busy at times (literally just count the strings in that above picture) because there's so many instruments and band members but i think it does a bit to separate it from the non-irish punk stuff that was coming out in the 80s pretty cool listen. not one i'll likely revisit but good stuff
i love the pogues. nothing that memorable, but not bad.
cool band composition but not my vibe
Not too bad, easy to listen, strong Irish folk vibes.
... 6 /10
I expected this to be interesting and it was! Very cool combination of Irish folk and punk sound but in the end it's not really my favorite or something I will revisit much.
A few songs were nice to listen too, but a whole was a bit too much for me.
Standard stuff
I like this feel in general, but don't think I'll often be in the mood for a full album's worth.
5/10. I sort of like this, but I can't listen to it for an hour, while sober, without losing my mind a little. Also it's weird there's just a Christmas song in the middle of the album, but I guess it's not that Christmassy so it's okay
This is a fun mixture of punk music delivered with traditional Irish sounds. I’m sure Springsteen was very familiar with it when he recorded the Seeger Sessions Live From Dublin. Unfortunately for me, after listening, much of this sounds the same to me.
I can see why someone who loves both irish music and punk would like this, but it's really not for me. I'd give a 2.5 if possible but I'll be generous.
Wiki labels this punk folk, it's definitely folk, but not sure how punk this is. Perhaps they're referring to its punk sensibilities and snarling attitude. Nevertheless this is a fun album with a lot more energy than the typical folk albums that I hear. If I should fall and Fairytale of NY are outstanding. The latter is probably the only Christmas song that I actually like. Yes, I'm a grinch. The rest of the album is fine also.
This sounds like the orgins of The Dropkick Murphys. Irish folk and punk fusion with some middle eastern and spanish influence as well. What a wild mix of sound that comes together in a wonderfully strange way.
Not a big Irish punk fan
Ok jam music if you like the style
This was a great album! Loved the different variety of instruments and songs. Felt a huge traditional influence here, probably due to the added members. This got me in the mood for the Renaissance Festival this year!
This album was a lot of fun to listen to. Zero skips, great energy, makes me want to toast a drink and sing along.
Not too bad
Not a massive fan
Irish folk with some great outside influences actually pretty cool
You could tell me this was Flogging Molly and I wouldn't know the difference. Props to the Irish for culturally dominating with their music and bringing traditional folk into mainstream. Very good overall, just gets reptitive for a full album. 3.5 but not quite a 4 for me.
Shane MacGowan’s voice and accent are wonderful on this album.
interesting sounds, irish rock, which I have not listened to much before.
I actually have this in my collection. This is one of those that I really like, if I am in the right mood. It's definitely a little long and not a lot of variety. But a lot of fun and Fairytale of New York is still great.
a fairly good album but i just can’t see myself listening to it. bonus points for fairytale or new york. ive still got 13 songs left and i’m a bit bored icl.
Not bad. Irish folk punk. Sounds like satire. Definitely worth another listen but I think will be my limit of this genre.
I do admire the happy, free sound of Irish folk music. There is no modern music that feels as liberatingly joyful as good irish folk. As far as the album goes, I think I enjoyed it but so many of the songs sounded quite similar.
The title track is an incredible opener that immediately justifies having every instrument on that cover. Fairytale of New York is amazing. A lot of great energy and playing here. I especially appreciate the inclusion of the track 'Worms'. But then my streamer pulled a fast one and tacked six b-sides onto the end , ruining the experience. I really hate that shit. I really do. It's my least favorite thing about streamers, that you have to weed out bonus material. This album ending at 'Worms' is great. Ending where it did wanted me to never go back to it again.
This app has been dogged at trying to make the Pogues a thing. For me, they are the archetypal 'best of' band - and I'm not ashamed to say that in the real world, that's the only album of theirs I physically own. Here, I don't think I've heard anything to change my mind. A couple of bangers, a fair bit of filler and a conservatism born from the limitations of both form and ability. It's not bad, if you like this kind of overheated blarney, but it's not great either.
Intersting Irish Music, listening while not my cup of tea I can't help but feel transported to a Old Time Pub, where two men are brawling while the rest laugh and drink. Fun album
Good set of songs from the punky folkies. The Christmas song in the middle seems a bit odd (though maybe not at the time)
pretty good, probably 3.5
I'm not generally a fan of Celtic-style music, but these guys are the exception. It's a great record... for all that Celtic shite up in it. ;)
it's fun, but it all sounds the same
It's the guys who did that song! And they do that song! And some other songs too I guess! It's alright.
Agradable y fácil de escuchar
This is the third album from the Irish folk punk band The Pogues. It is their best-selling album, thanks to the hit single "Fairytale of New York". Critics loved this album and praised the band for trying out some new musical ideas. Although this is The Pogues best-selling album, I still prefer their previous album "Rum Sodomy & the Lash" because of its sea-shanties which I'm partial to over this album's Irish folk punk/rock.
Cool
Some great songs and some mediocrity in here.
Okay record, has it's moments.
Folk music. Klinkt als veel Nederlandstalige nummers in een ander jasje. Bekende melodietjes zijn "If I should Fall from Grace with God" en "Fiesta". ***
I know the pogues arent for me when the 3 best songs are not their usual style... mexican, turkish and christmas song were great. Rest was piratey nonsense.
I've heard a bunch of these live but never on record, and a bunch covered by the Dropkick Murphys, so it's very much up my street. Easy 3, possibly 4, not enough to get me to a 5 but plenty of stuff to listen to often.
I love this kind of music, a kind of fusion between Irish folk and punk (hope we get some Dropkick Murphys on this list too), and this is a really clever album in the way it incorporates both of those and a load of other influences. That said, the quality of this is pretty variable, a lot of ups, but a lot of mediocrity there too. I think it's the top end of a 3 for me, doesn't do quite enough to get into a four (but a lot of the reviews on the site say that there's a better Pogues album out there, fingers crossed it makes the list).
Muito tipo folklore
Irish music
Initially I wasn't sure if I liked the sound but it slowly grew on me. Definitely sound like they heavily influenced flogging Molly and dropkick Murphy. Will listen again.
Wifebeater
folk com animação punk interessante.
Lekker album van The Pogues, die stem van Shane blijft toch uniek.
Ik kan dit waarderen. Zin om in Dublin in een kroeg te gaan zitten en een pint te bestellen.
Better than I expected. Pretty solid album. Highlights: If I Should Fall from Grace with God Fairytale of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl) Thousands Are Sailing Shanne Bradley
Interesting album, fast paced, Irish folk rock
Surprisingly versatile Celtic/folk/punk tunes. More listenable than a dropkick Murphy’s album imo.
Pros: - track one, at like 00:30 there's a wild shuffle- did yall hear that? it sounds like a CD glitch but it's not. It's in the snare and how it "reacts" to the rest of the band. That's really cool!! - Production is really good and the instruments are really distinct for late 80's. In my mind this time period for music was a lot of like maximalist production techniques and a ton of synths, ton of compression, and unnecessary layers because recording tech was getting better and better, but they kept it simple while still interesting and full. GREAT use of panning instruments to left and right ears without overdoing it. - So track 1 is like irish pop punk and track 2 is some middle east folk rock? This shit slaps Cons: Misc: - not naturally what I would be into but it's a cool overall sound right? - impressed overall!
Really enjoyed this, title track, bottle of smoke, thousands are sailing and, of course, fairytale of new york, were my favourites. Would have been better to listen to it in December though, given the clear association.
I'm totally out of my element with this one. I don't hate it. Better than the Dropkick Murphys. But, isn't everyone? Also, I'd like to think, if you're not drinking while listening to this, you're doing it wrong. If I Fall...is a great morning record. Day drinking!
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would
Solid
Irish folk-punk! lotta fun every once in a while
The sweet propulsion of the first three songs grinds to a halt for “Fairytale,” but the quality of the music keeps this not just afloat but sailing.
Well not at all what I was expecting. As someone with a passing interest in Dropkick Murphies this was pretty good. I’ve definitely heard this album in bars in Peterborough.
Nije moj đir ali da netko pusti neb se ljutila.
Očekivo sam bolje
Very Irish, sounds like Dropkick Murphys. Not terrible though.
🤔
It's not one I would put on with great frequency. I could quite happily sit in a pub and drink Guiness, while this played. But then again I could quite happily sit in a pub drinking guiness while most of the albums on this list played.
Aika hauska meininki. Ei oo kovin tuuttu genre tämä niin vaikea sanoa että onko parempaa kun keskiverto irkkurevittely (vai onko tää nimenomaan tän bändin juttu), mutta tarttuvat haitarimelodiat maistuu kyllä.
Style over substance
It’s a bloody good soundtrack for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. But other than that, not for me.
Music that I just to hear when in a pub in Donegal
This made me Irish
Overall, a fun sound and enjoyable album, but less enjoyable listening to the whole album straight through. Some of the songs began to feel quite alike-sounding for me as I listened through this, so to my ear these songs would sound best showing up in a longer playlist mixed in with a variety of artists and songs. It's good stuff, just kind of pounds on my ears when it's all at once.
I don't know much about the pogues other than Fairytale of New York.....but I quite enjoyed this. I would like to see them dial down the folk and dial up the punk, but it was an experience i wouldn't mind repeating
Interesting Irish drinking song album. Each song is rather similar, but I don't mind it too much.
Typical Sound, i can imagine it is a either you love it or you hate it sound, but I can enjoy this type of music!
I feel like I like the idea of this more than I actually like it.
A fun listen with generally toe-tapping rhythm (albeit angry lyrics) but a bit repetitive musically/ vocally
I love the Irish jig sound, and I liked the mix of fast paced songs with slower paced melodies. The album itself got a little redundant for me, and would I listen to it over and over? No.
