muy irlandesas. divertidas. no es algo q me pondira a escuchar pero mg

Fun punky Irish tunes! Some of the tracks blend together or are interchangeable but I still enjoyed the whole listen. I think this band is at its best when it’s trying something new as the typical formula wears a little thin. Still good time though. 6/10 Favorite tracks- “Fairytale of New York” “Fiesta” and “Worms” ( I want a full version of this song) ( you kinda get a spiritual successor with the Viagra Boys “Worms”)

Bekannte Stücke sind „Fairytale of New York“ (mit Kirsty MacColl), „Fiesta“ und „Thousands Are Sailing“. Die Produktion von Steve Lillywhite sorgt für einen dichteren und orchestralen Klang als auf den Vorgängern. Textlich wechseln sich persönliche, melancholische und politische Themen ab; in „Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six“ äußert die Band deutliche Kritik an der britischen Justiz. Das Album gilt als reifster Moment der Pogues – kraftvoll, erzählerisch und musikalisch vielseitig, ohne die raue Energie ihrer frühen Jahre zu verlieren.

At times cool mixture of Celtic sounds and punk, but gets a bit one-note after a while. 3.5 stars

There are a lot of good sloppy, brawly knees-ups to be found on The Pogues’ 3rd one but if great songs were potatoes then there would be a bit of a potato famine here. The main classic song really is The Fairytale Of New York and the next best song after that is the one towards the very end which has the same melody as Fairytale Of New York.

This is so random. So fun. A light album to enjoy. Also so culturally interesting.

Some good catchy songs, not what a typically listen to though.

I can see why people would think it’s fun. Undeniable classic that Christmas one, and I liked the second track. I’d like to give it another go at some point

Decent album, I see where Dropkick Murphy’s got their roots from possibly

Not for every occassion

There were parts of this that didn’t click with me, but I found it pretty unique and engaging as a total package. Pretty sure my ancestors were mostly English so sorry boyos.

Interesting. I've never intentionally listened to Celtic folk punk before but I liked it. I feel like I had trouble understanding some the lyrics because of the music seemed louder than the vocals at some points. Love the traditional instrumentation mixed with rock. Favorites: If I Should Fall From Grace, Fiesta, Thousands Are Sailing, Metropolis, Fairytail of New York

I like the jigs, but the ballads are a little sappy. Too much of that 80s style production.

Unironically good. 3/5

The album has upbeat music. Definitely the type you expect to hear in a pub.

I'd love to hear more about this history of this band! This feels like a precursor to Flogging Molly. Cool storytelling, need to listen to it again.

Decent album. Definitely better on the more lively songs. 3/5 Might listen again

I’m sure someone is really lit up by Celtic punk. I’m not that person. I just re-watched “Titanic” and appreciate the underdeck jamboree scene style they have—fiddles and stomping and drums—but the heavy Irish accent and the lyrical callback to, I suppose, traditional folk tunes and dirge detract for me. Hovering between high 2 and light 3. I’ll round up bc I enjoyed the music for the most part.

These Irish punk/folk albums are fun for a while but it overstays it's welcome quite quickly. 6/10

Folk rock vibes reminded me a lot of the stuff they danced to in pride and prejudice very old timey stuff got that one bells ringing out Christmas time song that I like but yeah definitely a product of its time.

Not my jam but I get it! Overall good composition of music and Different!

half completed, not my thing

É um bom álbum. Principalmente para ouvir tomando uma bebida barata. Celest Pandamon.

It was good

They're having fun.

feels like i should be trashed listening to this

Pretty fine! One of those sorta things where I don't feel like I need an album of it but I enjoyed my time enough at least.

This was a really interesting album and I had fun listening to it.

Pretty cool - different than expected

I would never put on Irish folk, but enjoyed a lot of this. Loads of great musicianship. I wouldn't say it felt very coherent as an album though and occasionally lulled. 3 overall

Good mix of punk and folk. Maybe loses a bit of focus. Strong 3

Yeah, great tunes. Edge of a 4 star rating here for me.

It was fun I've listened to the Pogues before and Irish rover was one of my favorites by them but the lead off track was great

Pogues are great but a full album is a bit of a job.

i enjoyed this a whole lot more than i expected to. i only took a downturn when the Celtic pub tunes started (and i think they're bonus track on the extended release). This would get a solid 3.5 from me

Good album full of Irish classics. Wouldn’t necessarily listen again but a fun listen.

Jaunty but deeply repetitive. I’ve heard magowan described as a poet but I can’t tell what he’s saying so I don’t know.

Great album, can’t believe I didn’t hear of this band until they got announced for riot fest

wonderfully poorly made

I don’t usually like Irish, folk, or punk music but this wasn’t bad. I think some of the songs wouldn’t sound out of place on the radio today.

Irish vibe. A bit redundant.

When I listened, I only wrote 2 words. Let me try again. While this isn't music I would choose to listen to on my own, I enjoyed the music. If I were just rating the music, it would get 4 stars. Most of the songs were fun and made me feel like I was living in another world, one where everything is much simpler than the one I live in. This album does not get 4 stars. It gets 3. The album doesn't work together very well. It is a collection of songs recorded together by the same artist, not an album.

I already had gotten Rum Sodomy & The Lash, so this was a welcome surprise. This one isn't nearly as fun as the last one. Just kind of boring at times. Still, it was solid. The title track as well as "Fiesta" were really good. Beyond that, they were fine. Not the best thing I've heard, but fine.

Respect to the Pogues for being trailblazers and mixing genres. That being said I couldn’t get into it. Reminded me of music being played to loud and too long at an Irish pub where you’re just trying to have a quiet catch up with a mate. At least it wasn’t dropkick murphys….

We going to the pubs with this one

Cool sound :)

Fairytale of New York åbenlys gigantisk banger, men ellers kunne jeg bedre lide den anden vi havde med dem!

Party hard

i would be okay to not listen that again.

Interesting

Crazy irish mood

a bit too punk rock for my tastes, but cool to see the origin of the genre

Irish punk folk

It brings me back to high school, my friend was, and still is obsessed with The Pogues. I can only listen in small sections as it's pretty intense!

Let's gloss over the very Christmassy elephant in this particular room, as a song that slightly defies rating or classification, and look at the rest of this album. And it's good! It is! It's also a lot of very similar songs with a load of fiddles and a drunk man singing over them. But there are many worse ways to pass the day.

Little sing songy for my preferences but it’s a passionate and spirited album.

I liked this more then I thought - but it was all the classic folk songs I liked

Solid album.

Not a big Pogues guy but this was alright

A decent upbeat bluegrass style party vibe. Enjoyed but not something I would listen to actively.

this is fun, tho the irish folk style isn't my favorite. 3/5

Buena mierda Irlandesa, con referencia a España en la canción "Fiesta". Qué mas se le puede pedir.

Sticks pretty closely to its specific vibe sonically, but there's still enough variety there to keep you interested. Some nice storytelling in the lyrics. Deals with some interesting themes as well at many points.

*1988. Celtic punk rock. *I have no idea why there are two the Pogues albums on this list. *I liked the first few songs, but then it got weird. **Best song is fairytale of New York. RATING – 6.5/10

not really my thing, well done though

A treat. I knew exactly 1 Pogues song before listening to this. I wouldn’t say there are any big surprises here, but I enjoyed hearing more of what this band was capable of. Stand out tracks (aside from Fairytale): Thousands are Sailing (gorgeous melody, ever pertinent topic), Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six and – of course – Worms!

with the Sinners movie just coming out, this band might get some more notice. The NY Fairytale is a favorite of christmas romcoms, but I don't think now as much about the Punk and Clash influences on this band.

As much as I like Celtic music, I’m not the biggest fan of the Pogues. This album in whole was okay but it wasn’t as impressive and sounds almost like every piece of Celtic music made. There are some highlights in this album but I don’t think it stands out as great in my opinion. Favorite Tracks: Turkish Song of the Damned, Fairytale of New York, Lullaby of London Rating: 3/5

Muy irlandés. Al final cansa pero la musica está guay, es animada.

Best Christmas song of all time + 18 songs that sound the exact same as each other. It’s pretty good though

Me gustó la fusión del folk irish con el punk. No muy mí estilo y se me hizo medio monótono.

I like how playful and energetic Celtic music is. But this is the second album from The Pogues I've listened to and it's just more of the same stuff. I think that this music is pretty good at the baseline but doesn't have a very high ceiling as there doesn't seem to be a lot of place for iteration. This album is still an enjoyable listen, but it's nothing special. 7/10

It was alright a 2.75

My 100th album and second Pogues on this list which is one Pogues album too many. That being said, it’s not terrible it’s just the same old thing.

3 pints in and at a bar in Dublin, this might be a 5. But driving around in August, it didn't hit

Lovely Pogues!

I've heard of the Pogues, but probably couldn't have named one of their songs before today. Póg mo thóin, too funny. Not sure what I expected, but it wasn't what I heard. They don't sound punk in that they actually seem like pretty good musicians and MacGowan actually sings more than screams. I guess lyrics and attitude are what make this punk. I enjoyed listening to this one quite a bit. Makes me a little curious to explore their music more.

I really like this album. I've love Fairytale of New York for as long as I can remember. It gets a little monotonous for being over an hour. Kind of the same thing over and over. I believe if I was in a band like this though, I would never want to stop playing so I can appreciate that. It's a great flavor of punk too.

Good but not great

Don't let these vampires into your barn.

Would I want to live in a pub and conspire with the IRA? Yes. Absolutely. Do I want to listen to this all the time? Not so much. It's in theory good but I just can't see myself ever really pulling this out.

High energy songs that have interesting instrumentals and singing. Fairy tale of new york is a great change of pace compared to the rest of the album, in that it is a duet with a female singer. The "The Dubliners" feature also helps break the album up, I would have liked a lot more features.

This is called punk? But it's like Irish good music

lol pensava q seria folk irlandes chile i en realitat és añgo molt més raro q aixo jaja they weird.pero es bastant tot el rato el mateix i al final cansa aixi q a solid 3 esta bn crec jo

Love the spirit. Understand their importance. Just not my bag.

It's either great or it sucks. Not sure.

As a redheaded Irishman myself, this is the most Irish thing I’ve ever heard. Well and good drinking music to sing while getting absolutely sloshed in a pub right here this is. I’d be doing a great disservice to my heritage by not giving this at least a 3. That being said, an hour of this is asking a lot from me. Listening to it twice to find a favorite song and get a lasting impression is also a lot. I enjoyed it more the second time through at least, so that’s something. I listened to it for most of the day, but there's a strict cutoff point for listening to this. There’s really only so much of I can take at a time, and I’d really imagine the same opinion would be shared for anyone. Favorite song here is “Sketches of Spain” as it’s something I could listen to on repeat easily. Wonder how much more if any Irish music is on here, and if any of it could possibly be any more Irish than this. I guess we'll find out at some point or another.

I don't like the irish punk sound, I guess this is the best of its kind at least Will I listen to again: 15%

I think Rum Sodomy was generally more exciting, but this still had some great moments

☘️

I didn’t know what to expect with this one. I ended up quite liking it. It’s full on Irish folk with punk elements. Felt like I was in a tavern during the golden age of piracy or something like that. It’s quite fun but gets grating toward the end

If you like your Celtic jig then this is the Pogues album to get as you'll only need one. Has the famed duet with McColl that is now on most Xmas compilations. Lillywhite did a good job getting this performance from the group.

I listened to this one in the shower and that was weird

Very cool mix of traditional Irish and rock. Made for a lovely drive back into the mountains.

a little too much shift to folk in the second half

Felt like I was in the Romcom Leap Year.

Admittedly, I don’t know enough about folk music or punk to reasonably review this. I enjoyed a few songs but I don’t think it’s for me. I’ll stick to Fairytale of New York at Christmas time

Oh wow! I'm thrilled this album is on the list, because this upbeat Celtic music is unlike anything else. I guess there's the sullen Dexys Midnight Runners, but their music wasn't nearly as interesting as the Pogues'. If I Should Fall from Grace with God (a good album title) uses Celtic music to make a modern punk/rock sound that is super engaging. I found myself not upset when relistening to the album. As a side note, one of the lead vocalists sounded a lot like Bob Belcher from Bob's Burgers (or rather, H. Jon Benjamin). That isn't something I thought I'd ever mention in a review, but if not in review #900, then when?

What is there to say? The Pogues excel at celtic rock and are a definitive staple of the genre. This album is no exception. I'm not versed enough on The Pogues (or even celtic rock as a whole) to really grasp what makes this album specifically a noteworthy inclusion when compared to their discography, but Wikipedia came in clutch to explain that this album was regarded as a high point for The Pogues. And what a high point this is, to no doubt have this album become a blueprint for celtic rock/punk/folk fusion. An easy 3 for me, if not a bit higher!

Nice album

It would have been 1988 when I saw them in SF, so it must have been this album. The album is enjoyable enough but I'm sure it was better live.

There is an under current of Irish music to these songs but there are many different styles throughout. I think my favourite track was Metropolis.

Enjoyed it fine

Not structured like an album but as a collection of songs this has great character 2/5 as an album, 4/5 as an hour of music

Cracking good fun in parts. Thousands are sailing and fairytale in new York will still be great in another 40 years. A lot of faff though. The album reeks of ciggies and spilt Guinness and is all the better for it. Just a bit too long for what it is.

Really good spirit and feels like a proper ceilidh! Can imagine the people dancing, arm in arm, in good spirits and with smiles on their faces! A similar sound throughout. Does give a boost but a little samey too. Would be great for the right environment, but not sure I’d listen, just for musics sake. But for a jig or a party or a dance, sure! Was quite glad of the change in ‘Streets of Sorrow’ and a beautiful song in its own right. Oh and then back to the norm! 😂 Didn’t inspire too much, but enjoyable enough.

This was interesting. The Irish elements worked great in some songs and not so much on others. I loved the vocals.

3.5 While not their best album, it is clearer and a more wide-angle lens vision of Celtic music and its impact. The new color of Spanish and Turkish music is a great touch. However, over the years "Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash" has aged the best - despite this one having their best single ever in "Fairytale of New York."

This and fish & chips and a hundred guiness. Fun album. Tough to go high because it’s not really my thing, but enjoyed the curveball inclusion.

Many of the high energy accordion-based tracks are in the same key, giving the whole experience a bit of a monotonous feel – akin to punk music released a decade prior. And in fact, the punk influence is more obvious than I thought – lots of other reviews mention it as well! The refusal to do any sort of experimentation or have a "wow" factor in an album is an element that's present in both punk and in the Pogues' work. With a few exceptions, the songs never stray from the same three or four chords, nor from the fast, excited, Irish-stepdancing-worth tempo. It would be more excusable to have a sort of "genre-snapshot" record if it were 40 minutes long, but at over an hour's runtime, the sound gets pretty old, pretty quickly. As another reviewer wrote: "Really fun for about 4 songs, and then it's very difficult to listen to. There's only so much Irish pub a man can take." The opening/title track is a good example of songwriting and lyrical ability, with some pretty solid melodies and an ensemble that hasn't yet tired itself out. Fairytale of New York is almost a good track but fumbles by dropping a slur where it doesn't belong. (Whoops.) Other than that, there are some nice piano lines accompanying a slower balladesque tempo – something I would've liked to see more of. Metropolis is a goofy play on spy/stealth movie soundtracks, and it works surprisingly well as a genre-blend. The Irish Rover is a nice pick-up after a slew of completely unmemorable tracks (including the very questionable Worms) and it has some fun vocal back-and-forths. 3/5 Key tracks: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, Metropolis, The Irish Rover

ganz ok. overrated band

I enjoyed this, and will be playing it around St. Paddy’s, but I can’t myself throwing it on on the average day.

Although "Fairytale" is top 5 holiday song for me, it's not likely I'll come back to this record.

A collection of deep Irish ballads and fun jigs. The kind you would hear on the pub on a Friday night that would make you want to get up and dance! Highlighted by witty, sometimes cheeky lyrics, wonderful traditional Celtic music, and Shane MacGowan's gravelly voice, this gives a punk vibe with its own unique twist. I believe the Pogues were a precursor to modern Maritime music and without them there would be many a kitchen without a party. And NOT pirate music.

this is some real working class music.....most of yall dont understand .. And like it's kinda terrible but also kinda cool in the sense of british punks in the 80s using traditional music styles to tell about the plight of the working class. The issue is that MOST music that sounds like this is really inauthentic and just using these sounds for weird pastiche aesthetics, but in this case the sounds and styles feel very authentic and purposeful. I am probably never going to listen to this again but did not hate it Fav song: If I Should Fall from Grace with God

Songs for rowdy nights in the pub. I no longer do rowdy nights in the pub. Fun though!

Enjoyed this one. Don't think I will do any repeat listenings, but it serves its time and place. The Christmas duet was an interesting one.

I forgot about “Thousands Are Sailing.” What a great song, along with others. Maybe it’s the extended version linked here, but the album started to flag for me after a while.

Good. I can here Mumford and son's in it.and the vocals reminded me of Rulf the dog from the Muppets

Muy de soundtrack de peli

Pretty cool

What a frustrating album, solid highs, terrible lows, and bunches in between. High 2/low low 3

Enjoyable, but gets a bit tiresome after a while. Particularly when “The Broad Majestic Shannon“ is basically just the middle part of “Fairytale” again.

Who would have thought that Celtic-Punk needed to be a thing??? I guess the Pogues! This is a great, influential album but for me it won’t be a repeat listen. Favorite song: The Irish Rover 3⭐️

Wanted to bump this up but it's just not my thing. Appreciate it for what it is, though.

entertaining

Irish af

Pas mal, mais l’impression à chaque morceau que j’aime la chatte et le pâté va venir derrière

19 tracks is a lot of tracks. Some are very cool. C'est un peu les parents de ska-p

An interesting change of genre with this one. I was pleasantly surprised as I am not a fan of punk rock. Somehow, the Irish folk addition made it a good album to listen to.

Not bad, but not a fan of Celtic folk-punk

This was a fun album, though honestly probably not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again. I dig folk punk but this one just didn't totally grab me in that way.

Música rara pero chula. Flow cumpleaños de Bilbo para bailar

Energy similat do the Dreadnoughts with twist from Camero Cat. Cool.

Not bad. The subtleties of Irish music is lost on me. But there were some pretty good songs on this album

Happy to see this on the list. Good drinking music, and having Kirsty on this is great.

I liked this more than I expected. Fair disclosure, I am not a fan of this genre of music because it is part of my heritage and part of my family is VERY musical so I heard it so often in my youth that it seems a bit tedious to me. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised.

it is fun but i guess i don't like folky elements much. "metropolis" was interesting.

A ride!

Irish folk-punk, é interessante - um tanto datado... 3 estrelas

Interesting. Many songs sound the same but I LOVE the vibe

Liked it more than I'd expected. Strong 3. Songs: Shane Bradley, Thousands are Sailing, Fairytale of New York (maybe)

Haha goofy pirate music. Shiver me timbers, yarr matie!

Not really my style but a good listen, especially on St. Paddy's Day. Faves are Lullaby of London and Streets of Sorrow.

Not my type of music, but can acknowledge it as something historic

I'm giving this a 3. I was going to give it a 2, but there were some tracks that I liked. The problem is that I tuned out halfway through the album twice.

I have Run, Sodomy and the Lash and that's okay! But even with Fairytale of New York I am not really loving this. I feel the best track is Turkish Song of the Damned and that is not enough to get more than 3 stars.

Great Irish album, more than just Fairytale of New York

Not my jam

Pretty good, i liked the first 2

I like the musical abilities of the band. Their lyrics are a bit all over the place though. This album could have been a wee bit shorter.

I sadly only got into The Pogues after Shane MacGowan’s death, but this album is grand. A great mixture of their more trad Irish stuff and a way to show off the other musical strings in their bow. The Irish Rover is one of my favourite songs, and whilst The Pogues are nowhere as good as The Dubliners, these lads still hold their own over the course of the album with their more punk-leaning Irish music and definitely paved the way for great modern bands like The Mary Wallopers. I didn’t listen to Fairytale of New York. Great song, but it’s April.

A fun evening out in a seedy Irish pub in a bad part of town. Fun for a while, but ultimately fatiguing and not a place you necessarily want to revisit often.

pögerdawgs!! erste song suuper cool irish folk rock dings. zweite song hert orientalist. oke han hert spass. fairytale of bew york seg huge gsi und ich glaub ch gsehs?? sehr nostalgisch irgendwie. gad so fiesta jetz findi chliii viel. chli sehr umpa umpa. streets of sorrow cuute tempowechsel nice. cute zum teil sehr schön zum teil aber schaffts nöd über es 3 sorryyy

yo ho ho are ye ready to set sail to the seven seas, fine lass?

Irish folk music? Kinda cool but started to wear out its welcome halfway through.

Wasn't expecting the 80's sheen on this, pretty good but not totally my thing

I always knew I had a personal limit of how many Pogues songs I can hear in a row before they all start to blend together. Now I know that limit is 7. I can listen to any 7 of these songs in any order and I'll have a good time. But I don't really want any more than that. After 10, I end up saying Enough! Other than that this is a good album for what it is, even if it's 12 songs too long. Good song for a closer too.

I got Rum Sodomy & the Lash some days ago so funny this rolled for today, and I think I liked it more maybe off the strength of being more energetic and varied compared to RSL, even still I can't seem to get used to how Celtic Rock sounds but hey I had fun

Metropolis is the best song. FUCK worms. 3.5

POV: It's St. Patrick's Day 2015, you and boys are crushing Harp Lagers and pounding Jamo shots. You could play this entire album, front to back all day and not a single person in the bar would notice it's been on repeat. I enjoyed it, but at the end of the day it's an Irish folk album that plays 20 really similar songs. It's exactly what I thought it was going to be - not bad just not really innovative.

wow, like the Boston song but for an hour+, dont love it

This album is full of chaotic charm—part punk, part traditional Irish folk, and completely unmistakable. Shane MacGowan’s slurred, ragged vocals are both a strength and a stumbling block depending on the song, but there’s no denying the band’s energy and spirit. The title track is a whirlwind, and Fairytale of New York has earned its place as a bittersweet Christmas staple. There are flashes of brilliance and storytelling throughout, but it’s a bit uneven as a full listen. When it hits, it really hits—but when it doesn’t, it can start to blur into a drunken stomp of tin whistles and accordion. There’s definitely heart here, and the band’s wild, unpolished sound is part of their appeal, but it doesn’t always translate into a consistently gripping album. Rough around the edges, with a few standouts, but more hit-and-miss than great.

Me gustó más a medida que avanzó

Irish rock / folk feel

I've had enough Irish rock for one week

Enjoyed some of this and of course one of the all time great Christmas songs is in there which gives it a boost. Equally a few numbers didn’t quite hit the mark.

I was rather surprised by the number of tracks on this album, and the variety of styles incorporated. Doesn’t mean I particularly like it though. Just all feels a bit cliched Irish music down the pub schtick to me. Tips into a 3 for a classic Xmas tale.

Very upbeat Irish folksy sounding, almost wades into Shipping up to Boston territory. Decent at first, but gets old fast.

3,5/5 ⭐ é na sola da bota

Very Irish and a good surprise of a record. Filled with heart and songs to get you going.

Good, but too much irish music.

I don’t know what to do with this. I really like it, but I am not in an Irish bar! But I want to be. Because I’m not in a bar or at a folk music festival, I get Irish folk music fatigue after a good handful of songs. This record is too long for my taste.

Even if you're not familiar with the Pogues, you've heard their sound: quintessential Celtic punk/drinking songs.

Way better than I'd expected. Would listen again.

More annoying than the first album I had listened to.

Pretty standard irish/Scottish punk stuff. Were they the first? A few songs felt very Dropkick Murphy's or Flogging Molly - not a bad thing for a 30+ year old album. Vocals weren't the strongest, I like that style but I'm not sure it was mixed well. Reminded me of Rancid at times. The vocals were the strongest and most clear on some of the slower stuff, but that wasnt enough to keep me completely engaged. The Instrumental and Medleys were cool and I didn't mind some of the traditional stuff.

Yesterday was a terrible day. Too terrible for sad pogues music so I just listened to Steve Winwood all day instead. Sean said it was good so I’ll give it a 3.

I really like the instrumentals, but don't really care for MacGowan's voice. This was refreshingly different from some of the other albums that have come up on this list. It does run a little long though. Fairytale of New York bumps this up to a 3 for me

Some good stuff but I struggled with the sound for an entire album.

Not really my style but i recognize the talent. Fairytale is an amazing song.

Irish punk, not always the vibe but better than expected.

This was a LOT of The Pogues for me to have in one sitting. Living in the drinkingest neighborhood in a city with a rowdy St. Patricks Day parade & celebration has really ruined me for The Pogues, which is truly not fair to them. But hey, it's March 12 and this Saturday is the parade so I'm already bracing myself.

Only Pogues album I'd listened to before was Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash, though I've listened to Fairytale of New York plenty before, and this one just reinforced my existing opinion: The Pogues have some really good tunes, but their albums are pretty uneven. Shane MacGowan was a very talented songwriter but every time I hear this band I'm reminded of how fucking nasty his teeth are. I really only listen to them around St. Paddy's day, so good timing for this to show up in my album generator.

Pleasantly surprising - I bet this is great live. A bit repetitive though and some bands just need to let someone else sing. Think what it’d be like with someone good!

Folky and alright with a good sound but a bit repetitive

To me the Pogues have always been the "Fairytale of New York" band. Their sound is the same throughout this album and I like it a lot. A very nice folk music feel.

This is so upbeat and different from what I usually listen to. I like it. Liked Songs Added: The Broad Majestic Shannon

Grew on me by the end, don’t like his voice much but still good to listen to

If I want an Irish folk-punk song, it's here or Billy Bragg. It's fun music, some more traditional than others but solid all the way through.

I was not expecting what I got, to say the very least

Bra i sin genre, men det gör inget att jag sålde den förra året.

never thought i needed irsih folk punk but it is what it is 像办红白事

At first, I was like, “Nah, I don’t have the stamina to sit through a whole Pogues album.” But then, somehow, I did! I probably won’t do it again anytime soon, but honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. One thing I’m really allergic to is fade-out endings in songs. This album had a few, and while I get that it was a common practice in the ’80s, it still brings the rating down for me.

I 've been aware of Pogues for a long time, I even knew this album by name, but had not heard it as a whole. I'm more of an Dropkick Murphy kinda guy tho. While the musical ability and variety took me by surprise, this is almost exactly what I was expecting. I'll probably need to look into their older albums, where the punkier side was much more up front. It's sort of party music for me, which means it feel wrong to listen to it at home.

It's fine. Just not vibe I typically go for.

🍀 sea shanty, tavern type music, pretty banging to be fair, the broad majestic Shannon was literally fairytale of new York 2

Summon Bear With Lute at Skyrim Nexus - Mods and Community It was fun ye, I'm not a drinker myself, but can imagine it being even more fun at a pub with friends. Or soon-to-be friends, that are picking up a fight with you at the moment. This is what this music is for, right?

I'm sure if I were from the UK or going to bars in the midwest were my thing, this would be a band I'd listen to. I like the mix of modern and traditional instruments but the shanties get old after awhile.

Interesting irish music but it kinda reminded me of a little cajun and then a few of the songs had some cool influences. I liked sketches of spain. Idk if i will go back and listen b/c the irish style all sounds the same but fun listen anyway

3/5 but 5/5 for drinking on st pattys day

I love that the Pogues exist. It's a cool album but not really something I can return to with much frequency.

Good to see where a band like The Dropkick Murphy’s had some inspiration from. Punk and The Jig just blend so well. 3.5 goin down.

As an Irish myself, I appreciate the passion here. Loud and hyper isn’t my fav.

A fun Irish punk listen. World Jam to it with a bottle of Irish whiskey.

Could only find the Expanded Version of this album so I’m not sure how long the original is. But for me it definitely outstayed its welcome. Still for the first 10 songs there was variety and I kinda loved the Irish nature of the rock band. 3/5

canciones para oir en el pub

I enjoyed this more than Rum Sodomy & The Lash. Fairytale of New York is a stone-cold classic, of course, and actually as indestructible and Shane seemed and felt in his younger years. Puts me in the mind of banter and craigh with the lads and lasses down at the pub, with pints aplenty and some singing along. This album also made me realise that Shane was a great, great storyteller - but the band were absolutely top notch as well. Having said all that... Listening to this sober on the commute to work, by song 10 I definitely started to feel hung over and regretful of having had one pint too many. The last one was probably off.

Fairy tale of New York is the only song I knew before hand. An interesting album. A few of the songs really got me going in my chair at work. I enjoyed listening but not something I would go back to again any time soon.

Ion remember

High energy and generally good but repetitive. Makes a good soundtrack for a chase though hills and trees

I must confess, my initial reaction to encountering another Pogues album just two months after Rum, Sodomy & The Lash was less than enthusiastic. While their presence in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list is rare enough to feel serendipitous, I wasn’t exactly eager for a second round. My first outing with the band left me feeling adrift. While their rollicking, chaotic energy undoubtedly has its audience, I struggled to connect. Shane MacGowan’s vocals weren’t the issue—I find his whisky-soaked rasp endearing. But overall, the unpolished instrumentation and relentless pace just didn’t land. So, imagine my surprise when I found myself genuinely warming to If I Should Fall from Grace with God. This album feels more ambitious, as if the band decided to channel their riotous energy into something broader and more polished. While Irish folk remains the backbone of their sound, tracks like “Fiesta” add a Spanish carnival flair with its brass and percussion, while “Turkish Song of the Damned” incorporates Middle Eastern melodies for a hauntingly unique vibe. The production by Steve Lillywhite (of U2 fame) is undeniably sleeker, giving the band’s chaos a sense of cohesion without diluting their spirit. Of course, the standout is “Fairytale of New York,” the bittersweet Christmas duet with Kirsty MacColl. It’s no surprise this is their most streamed track—it’s heartfelt, poignant, and timeless, showcasing the band at their best. Beyond that, the title track is a riotous blend of driving rhythm and Irish instrumentation that feels tighter and more refined than their earlier work. That said, the listening experience feels a bit like an all-night pub session where the energy begins to drain after the 4th or 5th pint (who am I kidding, I’m a lightweight—it’s 2 for me), and events start to blur into each other. Even with improved songwriting and production, the relentless pace and reliance on similar instrumental tropes can make it hard to fully appreciate individual moments. In the end, If I Should Fall from Grace with God proved to be a pleasant surprise. It softened my scepticism, even if it didn’t convert me into a fully fledged Pogues devotee. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? I'm still unconvinced, even if Fairytale of New York is as strong a song as you will find on any of these albums. Would this release make my personal list? No Will I be listening to it again? Unlikely. But I’ll gladly raise a glass to them instead.

Over an hour of Irish drinking/fighting music is a bit too much for me. Lots of this sounded familiar but could be because it all sounds the same. Enjoyable and I was doing a stupid jig in the car which my daughter hated. 3/5

An album full of fun sounding irish bar music.

Really cool album, the mixture of punk and Irish music is very visible! Cool lyrics.

Not as good as Rum, and mostly spoiled by the awful Fairytale track. But, if you enjoyed that song, this album may be for you

you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot

I sharpened me boots an' bludgeoned me eye for these tales of nautical nonsense. The voyage to the corner of the globe was a real trip, but I wouldn't say it was worth going without one kiss of your lily white lips, or that it compares to the words of the golden eel or the tale of the whale with the polka dot tail. If this album were my captain, I'd be his Jonny on the spot but wouldn't fill up his glass to the rim - I'm sure he'd be fine accepting only fresh brine. If I found this album in the sandy ground emulating the ocean's sound, it wouldn't speaketh of the trinity, gaze at the sun with it's wandering eye or summon the queen that turns fire to steam. Yarr... This pink eye (on my leg) is making me wave my dick in the wind once again. When the mist lets the sun through, I think this album did alright by me and you. I'll try and keep that in mind when I'm dancing in the show tonight.

Enjoyed the album and found a few standout tracks. Suffers a little from one of the best tracks being everywhere for a couple of months per year, so skipped it on most listens. 3.5

Veldig hyggelig fele-musikk! Har en punkete edge som hindrer det ikke å bli for relativt.

It was fine.

very irish

Pretty good album, especially right before Christmas. They are pretty talented and have great lyrics. I'm just think that I like it in much smaller doses. It's kind of tiring to listen to the whole thing.

Loved the album. I hate giving it a 3, but songs can get a bit repetitive (which isn’t a negative, if that makes sense). Their influence is very apparent and a band I would’ve LOVED to see live!!

Heard the first 30 seconds and rolled my eyes bc this isn’t the genre for me. However the song writing was surprisingly impressive. Despite this I doubt I come back to the album

The Pogues sound very Irish but also very farm-y, possibly because of the banjo, and judging from the album artwork, they have tons of members. This is what you hear when you enter a pub very late at night and everyone is shouting. When you listen to the main singer, you don't really imagine him looking like that, especially looking at the rest of the band members, but I think that he is the most popular one. I am actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this whole album, and you can also tell which song is the most popular one, as it has 400 times more plays than the rest.

Fun album. Irish Folk Rock is always a happy, jaunty mix.

I went into this with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Would I listen again? Maybe not, but a decent album.

It gets the thumbs up. With Fairytale of New York on it, it’s never gonna be anything other than a classic but loads of great tracks on there

Definitely a different take on punk which I can appreciate. Reading about the frontman Shane MacGowan he is a crazy person. Definitely adding Fairytale of New York to my Christmas playlist with the fam. Not the biggest fan of folk or punk, but together for some reason it makes more sense. Not something I plan on coming back to but I could pound some Guinness and listen to this on St. Pats Day

Haven’t heard this Pogues album but own Rum Sodomy & the Lash on vinyl. Listened while running at Mission Bay and it was nice but no real standouts.

Weird listening to Fairy Tale of New York in an album context. Kind of played to death, but a good song. Like the Metropolis instrumental - pretty fun.

Starts off strong then quickly loses steam. Just like my last marriage.

Rating this album feels like rating people. The Pogues feel so deeply like a representation of a sub group of people at a certain time, rife with culture and texture. After I got over the knee jerk negative of their sound, I felt jealously for what seems like such a tight knit community. It's not my favorite music, but they earned my respect. Maybe just cuz it feels like if someone says a negative word about them get clubbed in an alley.

An interesting album, but one that didn’t catch me all too much. The song quality varied a lot on this album as well, some were much better than others.

хз тяжело такое слушать

I enjoyed it at times but I don’t think I will relisten

Tvö Írlönd í röð. Fairtytale of New York er ekki besta jólalag allra tíma, því það er einfaldlega ekki jólalegt. Annars er þetta vel unnin pöbbatónlist og góð sem slík, en ekki ætla ég að renna plötunni tvisvar í þetta sinnið.

2 great songs but a lot of filler

I don't really like folk, that being said, I quite enjoyed this upbeat, album that sounds like a constant local festival with its acoustic sound.

Some good, some bad. A fun experience regardless.

Ok, but not my favourite Pogues.

It. It’s not that I hate The Pogues. I just don’t like listening to them.

I really loved the instrumentals on this one . I gotta say I wish I knew what the singer was waffling on about for most of the album. I'm sure this is mostly just me but I couldn't really gel with his singing since I often found myself pondering 'I THINK that's what he said???' The fun tunes that accompany it would be enough for a 4, probably the best folk styled music I have heard so far since it is given a bit more flavour by the punkier elements of the band. I did feel that the novelty of the style did wear out as the album got longer, stretching just above an hour.

As a high a three can go without being a 4. I really enjoyed this, but there were definitely a few tracks that were not my speed namely anything that mentions Christmas, which triggers my fight or flight reflex. What a present surprise to have Dubliners features on this. And I’d just like to say there is no way the lead singer of the Pogues is still alive.

She wondering if I should on the Pogues until I fall from Grace With God I hate Gimick shit, power metal, sea shanties, bard-core. This reminds me of that but is actually good Really fucking front loaded tho 7/10 Fav tracks - Turkish Song of the Damned, Bottle of Smoke, Fairytale of New York, Medley, Sketches of spain Least Fav - none really

Fun pub vibes

I like a lot of this but all at once it is a lot. Many of the songs sound very similar to me.

fairytale of new york is a great christmas song, but the guys voice gets really annoying

Tradition Irish music fused with punk is an interesting idea. When it works it's raucous fun. It doesn't always work for me though, and a full album at once is too much.

All the Irish music you will ever need and then some.

I had really high hopes for listening to The Pogues on this project. Based on what I’ve heard about what they did for Irish Folk music etc. Ends up I think the only style of Irish folk music I know is The Pogues. Relentless! 3.4

A fun album. I hadn't heard it before.

Great Irish folk album

It's like Lord of the Dance meets punk. It's a fun listen when you're in the mood for that happy-drunk-roudy vibe. My favorite track was the one that featured a guest singer, Kristy MacColl.

My record collection would probably only ever need one Irish Folk Punk album. But, if I ever got one, this would be a solid pick.

Kind of Like the Cramps, this feels like a sub-sub genre I'm not sorry to get exposed to, but is ultimately so thoroughly specific in its focus that unless Celtic punk is your thing, you're probably not going to re-visit. Like everyone else, I enjoyed Fairytale of New York most (the call and response of 'I could have been someone,' and 'Well, so could anyone,' is really wonderful.) But outside of St. Patrick's day, unlikely to listen again.

Not exceptional but nice Irish pub vibes.

Never heard of these guys - but I like 'em!

Pretty fun but an hour is more than enough

Pretty interesting. Not a huge fan of the sound but appreciated it

Some of these songs do NOT work well with the singer’s voice. The rest are fine, but not my fave.

Fun, not my scene

If you're into Celtic rock or Irish folk music, you'll probably love it. I appreciate it for what it is, it's great music, just not for me. I do like 'Fairytale of New York' and 'Metropolis', though. 3 stars

Personally, not a patch on the first two albums which benefitted from being raw, but still a pleasant ditty or two

I grew up close to Boston during the reign of The Dropkick Murphys, so I’m at least acquainted with the sounds and the aesthetics of Celtic Punk, though I’m far from a fan. This said, I’d never given The Pogues a fair shot, largely because I was never won over by their 2000s torchbearers. I’d heard great things, and on paper, it seemed like I could be easily won over, so I went into this listen hopeful with open ears. Those hopes were optimistic, and those ears didn’t need to be that open. At the end of the day, The Pogues are just exactly what you’d expect from the progenitors of Celtic Punk. As the originators, though, I am a bit kinder to the cliches, but not by much. A song like “Bottle of Smoke” or “The Recruiting Sergeant et al.” just doesn’t get me excited. It’s just either sped-up Irish Folk music or punk with folk instrumentation, and while the idea is sound, the practice isn’t something I want to actually hear. Now, I’ll say this– I think If I Should Fall From Grace With God is frankly too long. Not that 51 minutes is long, but 15 tracks, no matter how short, can be an exhausting listen if not every song earns its keep. And I’d say about half of the tracklist sounds like cliches, or, at least, future cliches, and that drags this album out beyond the point where I can tolerate it. That said, The Pogues are capable of writing great songs, and there are great songs on this album. The opening title track does the cliche-setting the best, and “Fairytale of New York” kicked me in the ass, like, holy shit, that’s great songwriting! I’m also good with “Thousands Are Sailing” and “The Broad Majestic Shannon.” There’s also a few tracks that change it up just enough and help give this record enough variety to keep me moving – not even averting cliches of Celtic Punk, but averting Punk cliches in general – like “Streets of Sorrow,” Metropolis,” and “Worms.” I wonder if this is more of what I was expecting from The Pogues, as opposed to the foundation-building of a whole genre, because these songs feel boundary-pushing in a way I’m not seeing on the rest of the album. Regardless, while I appreciate what The Pogues are doing, and I think they can sometimes transcend, overall, this is just the building blocks of a subgenre I don’t really enjoy, so, unsurprisingly, I’m not head-over-heels for If I Should Fall From Grace With God, and find it mostly just okay.

You could say that there's a lot of similar sounding tunes here, but most people unfamiliar with a genre could say that. I'm ok with that if I like it, and I like this. Irreverent, joyful, sometimes thoughtful or maudlin, or just abiding. Anyway, listen longer, they are different, in composition and execution. Jigs and ballads and such. Then there's that Xmas song. I listen to that song every year and am not sick of it yet. I wouldn't put this album on very often, but I wouldn't complain if you did. Three skiddly idle diddledum stars.

I love the punk rock / traditional Irish combination. I especially like the tracks featuring the Dublineers. And the female singer in Fairytale of New York.

Fun listening. Interesting variety of sounds

As good as this genre is going to get. Best Christmas tune. 3.75

Pretty good.

Meni jako zabavan album! Osjecem se kao gusar kad ga slušam XD Ali nis posebno.

Never erd of The Pogues, album off to a great start. Turkish Song of the Damned caught me and turned to be the best song on the album. OK through the (lengthy) middle. After a while all Irish music sounds similar, but they finished strong with Sketches of Spain and South Australia. It was a little weird having the Christmas song Fairytale of New York pop up after some rockin’ Irish jigs and then bouncing to a Bond-like theme song, but it shows their variety. Overall, comes in at (2.8*s)

You see that accordion on the cover and instant dread sets in, but alas oh diddly dee, this album is surprisingly good! It has wide variety and crosses many different genres in a way that seems effortless. I love a good sea shanty vibe and The Pogues don't slack. They've managed to make some very catchy, energetic songs that somehow incorporate a tin-whistle and a banjo so I'm here for it. Least favorite song was "Fiesta" and you can't really listen to this on repeat since it's already repetitive in itself but I did enjoy. 2.85 for the raucous bunch.

Saw the album cover and title and thought oh no...this is gonna be a rough one. Totally not! This was kick ass. I did not expect an Irish drinking album. The genre is known to be repetitive but I think The Pogues covered some ground here and explored. Lead singer looks like the biggest goober but on the mic he has bollocks. "Bottle of Smoke" being my favourite track but while album was good. There is a classic Xmas song that will get play annually and I think I even heard some Bond Theme? For pure surprise and fun...3.45.

Good but death by fiddle

Celtic ACDC with Bon Scotts dad? not bad

Vraiment le fun, un bon moment que je ne saurais analyser mais que j'ai bien apprécié

I genuinely appreciate this album for what it is. The mix of Celtic music with some punk influence mixes in is unique and interesting. There's really not a bad song on the album. All that said I can't find myself listening to this much. I don't even think of it as a novelty, but the vibe is so specific I can't think of a context for it.

The Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God is a spirited and rousing collection that documents a supposed peak in the band's musical trajectory in spite of losing key band members. With the addition of the unexpected holiday classic Fairytale of New York, this album has plenty to enjoy if one favors barreling Irish jigs. Favorites: If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Turkish Song of the Damned, Fairytale of New York, Metropolis, Thousands Are Sailing, The Recruiting Sergeant/The Rocky Road to Dublin/The Galway Races, Sketches of Spain, South Australia.

Fairytale is overplayed, but it's nice to hear Kirsty MacColl for the second time in three days. The rest is good enough listening, but it's not what I would go out of my way to listen to.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Lyrics are great and important Standout tracks: Thousands are sailing - 4/5

Pretty good, but not as good as I remember. I had this album in college and really enjoyed it back then. Although it hasn’t aged as well as I thought it would.

I’d only heard the Christmas song before, and the rest was decent but it all kind of sounded the same. If possible, you should hear Fairytale of New York karaoke with Ian singing the Kristy MacColl parts.

It's a long one. As much as I've enjoyed The Pogues in the past, I was surprised to find a lot of the songs on this album flowed into the next.

So far really enjoying this! Lots of upbeat music. Makes me want to get up and dance a jig. Wishing I could rate using half stars, because so far I would give it a 3.5/5 After listening to the second half of the album - I am giving it a final score of 3/5. I loved some of the songs, most were forgettable.

Celtic punk? It's definitely unique...The Dropkick Murphys were definitely influenced by them... Highlights: "If I Should Fall from Grace with God", "Fairytale of New York" (lol at some of the lyrics...), "Medley" (a bunch of traditional songs done generally traditionally), "The Broad Majestic Shannon" Notable: "Fiesta" (wtf? 😆 🤣 😂)

Irish Rock Party Musik!

Irish light jiggly punk like Dropkick Murphys.

As tedious as this is to me after about 20 minutes, I recognize how exciting it is and I've always loved Shane's voice. It's like he forgets the lines just before singing and is always a bit behind the rhythm.

Fairy Tale of New York is the all time great Christmas song and its so nice to have an albums worth of context for it. The Progues are expert story tellers and even though this album has some real stinkers the highs defiantly outweigh the lows! Favourite track: Medley: The Recruiting Sergeant / The Rocky Road to Dublin / Galway Races.

I've heard of this band but not any of their music. I actually did not think it was this type of music. Thought they were more 60's-oriented. Very cool.
