Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Can't believe this album is that old. I never thought I'd feel nostalgic for The Offspring but this is a great album.

time to take your shirt off, let your hair flow loose and mosh like a rabid creature while you shred the gnar. this album is VERY punk. not just extreme punk, but TOTALLY X-TREEEEEEME punk music. a mostly solid collection of pumping, punchy tracks that'll make you feel like a teenage boy who spent his birthday money on vans kicks and blind skateboards.

The top review of this album on this site says "Offspring is like Taco Bell for punk". I couldn't put it better myself. As one of the few punk bands that would tour around our barren wasteland that is Northern Ontario, I saw the Offspring live many times in my early 20's, and so many of these songs are tied to those memories for me. These songs are fast, loud, fun, not all of them are necessarily good, and I don't return to them much. This is the junk food of punk music, and it should be consumed in moderation. But oh my god, is the nostalgia ever delicious.

More fun than I expected, honestly! I had a good time listening to this album. Took me back to when I was a kid playing Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero.

Was familiar with some of the songs on this one. It’s great. Couple duds that keep it from being a 5, but think they’re just a super solid band with good songs!

Last half of album was great

Back in the 90s The Offspring were starting to be viewed as a bit of a joke band - something they leant into with Pretty Fly - but that wasn't entirely justified. Like their contemporaries, Green Day, this wasn't entirely justified. There genuinely are a few very decent tracks in here, tracks that despite not having heard for 20 or so years feel like slipping into a warm friend. None of these are in the first 3 or 4 tracks though, so it does need a bit of a run-up.

Formative album for me

Oversaturation on the radio really turned me off to the Offspring when I lived through them the first time. Listening now, more or less fresh, it's more interesting than I gave it credit for as a young adult. Sure, there's an "edgier than thou" vibe to a lot of this album, but there's also a delightful sincerity to the anthems of disaffected youth untethered in an uncertain world. Isn't that what punk is about?

Great music!

I never really listened to the lyrics of this album (I had it playing with the lyrics showing) and they sing about a lot of current issues. Extra star for being topical.

Skateboarding, mountain biking, snowboarding, bmx, x-games, etc.

More my type of music

This album is a fucking blast. Playful, high-energy punk. If you’re down for wading through some white boy angst to get to the good stuff there’s a lot of good stuff here.

Fun pop-punk. Self Esteem is such a great song.

Drink your milk!

Misfits meets ska, OG Punk Rock, narrated Album, featuring: Selfesteem

CA RÉVEILLE

2 songs are great. The others are aight

Highlight: Self Esteem (ofc)

Probably one of the best examples of 90s American punk-rock alongside the early Green Day albums, have listened to The Offspring many times, so most of it was nothing new. Generally a pretty good album.

Pretty catchy.

Solid Offspring album, added to the rotation

So powerful!

Strong choice for 7:30 in the morning but it got the day goin. Would’ve recommended for the gym.

Reminds me of the Hives, I liked it a lot, solid 4

Gotta keep ‘em separated

Good, last song was strange

Classic 90s grunge

I liked the best tracks on this at the time, but it's actually very enjoyable as a whole now I've sat down and listened to it. A rare case of the best album not being the poppiest - that came next and has aged badly!

2nd best Offspring album behind Ixnay

Good. I didn't get into it as much as Conspiracy of One, Americana and Ixnay on the Hombre. Maybe I need to listen to it more.

Some of the best of this genre

hi-energy, clever post punk slam-dance music for intimate partners

Absolutely love this album. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: Bad Habit

I loved this album as a kid, and listening to it is tied to that youthful nostalgia. It's not as world shaping now as it was back then, but damn if it isn't still one hell of an album.

Maybe I'm just a product of the time but this is a near perfect skate punk album and Offsprings 2nd best overall album.

Classic and nostalgic

So many bangers on this album!

In "Pantera Fans in Love," Nerf Herders sings "I wish we'd never heard of the Offspring," which I always thought was a bit of a cheap shot. All due respect to Nerf Herder, but I wish I'd never heard of Pantera. Personally, I'd rather listen to all the Offspring albums back-to-back than listen to a single Pantera song. This album in particular is a solid offering of '90s punk(-ish) rock. It includes at least four tracks worthy of a greatest hits album, and after a quick trip to the Wiki, I've found that "Gotta Get Away," "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)," and "Self Esteem" actually are on their greatest hits album. Why "Bad Habit" isn't included is a head-scratcher. Maybe the road rage theme is considered in poor taste? If so, it seems like a weak reason to keep the song off the album; it might be my favorite track on "Smash." As for the rest of the album, it's all solid Offspring fare. Some I like more than others, but none of them compel me to jump for the "Skip" button. That's more than I can say for the majority of albums by any artist, and certainly for anything by Pantera.

This dropped in '94 when I graduated high school & went off to college. It was one of the first CDs I purchased on my own & it instantly became one of my favorites at the time. Gotta Get Away, Come Out and Play, and Self Esteem were at the top, and I always found the content in Self Esteem a bit jarring. Here's a song about a dude who has such little self esteem that he let's a slutty chick use the hell outta him. The role reversal blew my mind - it was the first time I had heard a song about a guy getting used and abused the way women often do in music. I respected the band for this perspective & thought it was pretty ballsy. Solid listen. 4 stars

Overall it was ok. Punk. Couple of radio hits.

Either my nostalgia is STRONG or the hits are just much better songs than most of the rest, but I was only feeling the middle/end of the album. That said, those tracks are great. Rating 3.5.

pedal to the metal, classic mainstream (punk)rock album. One of my first CD's really hits in the nostalgia field for me. Would probably get under your skin to hear it too often or in the wrong moments, but still loads of fun.

Gotta keep em separated

This is one I owned in my youth. The hits here are top notch but there is no amazing deep cuts here.

I've grown to have quite warm fuzzy feelings for Offspring. At the time, nothing could beat "Dookie" where I pretty much played it so much the cassette failed. But Tony Hawk and Crazy Taxi and the mists of time have made me realise I probably should have played some other cassettes too. Standout track "Self-Esteem"

I dont enjoy a lot of this bands more popular songs (mainly 'pretty fly for a white guy'), and come out and play is one that i still dont like that much, but for the rest of it, this record is a blast and should be listened to if you like punk rock.

A solid rock piece with a few stand out songs that defined the genre for many years. 6/10

Hey hey hey come out and play

LA LA LA LALA LA

Great energy

Reminds me of the 1st year of university. An extra 1/2 star for nostalgia.

Favourite tracks: bad habit; gotta get away; self esteem; come out and play ; genocide

Reminds me of just sitting and playing tony hawk just sitting and vibing off the punk energy trying to land a 900

Not the best writing in the world. Pretty formulaic, but it was definitely unique. I liked this album quite a bit when it first came out and it holds up pretty well in my opinion.

Klassisk punk rock, fed energi.

Have always been a fan and glad to see Smash get wider love. Very representative of ‘90s-00’s skate punk.

My intro to the Offspring. And a fan ever since.

Im giving this a 4, I really like this album and knew many of the songs. Seems to have a withstanding legacy but its overall rating doesn't stand up to the bog players apparently.

classic

- Surprised to see an Offspring album on here, good for them - Not the hugest Offspring fan, but this album has some bangers - I'd give it an honest 3.5, but I'll round up cuz its punk

- legends of speed punk - musicianship is very high - lyrics can be hit or miss but the messaging is always very good

Album 144 of 1001 The Offspring - Smash Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Self Esteem I'm liking the punk offerings more, each day. This is a good one. Many songs I remember from 90s radio.

lots of catchy songs

This album fuckin rocks. It rocks fuckin hard. It’s so fun and doesn’t take itself seriously and it all works perfectly. Second half gets a little repetitive compared to the experimental first half. A little too comfortable. That and the production are my only two complaints. Everything else is so electrifying you can’t not enjoy unless you go in with shit in your pants. Also, the influence of this album cannot be overstated. Love it. 4/5

First time listening, is clearly a hugely influential album to modern bands

Never listened to this album fully, but I've heard all but a few of the songs anyway. This makes me wish ai was a little older and could have been a part of the scene at the time instead of learning about it 10 years later.

Peak pop punk. Even tiptoes into being a spiritual successor to the punk-adjacent first Iron Maiden album. I think that riff in the bridge of Genocide follows the melody from the bridge of Maiden's Phantom of the Opera. Come Out and Play back to back with Self Esteem is just diabolical. Kickass tunes. It pushes for 5 stars at times, but I think "perfect punk" is an oxymoron. Final verdict 4.25.

Damn it.

good length, strong 4, most songs sound very similar but I like the sound. self esteem, keep em separated (hell yeah brother), not the one

Classic pop punk

The 90s man. Good times.

Don’t hate on me for this but I really like this album

Vet!

“What happened to you?” is catchy. Percussion was too similar across a lot of tracks in a way. Guitar and bass did not disappoint. Title track “Smash” was nice. Empowering and what I needed leaving work to go home and smash plates on a Friday. Then it transitioned into a simple, but chant like percussion and chords

Heard before Saved 9/14 Top track: Bad Habit

Released right after Dookie, this album's highly accessible sound propelled skate punk to the mainstream, with many songs being radio staples to this day. Its diy raw punk style offered many listeners a good alternative to both grunge and that "poppy" alt-rock that dominated radio. It's aggressive, fun, and catchy with tons of hits in the first half. It has its weak songs. "Something to Believe In" is a little catchy and has a killer guitar solo but sticks out as the odd one in a side full of hits. The second half has its moments in every song and is more true to traditional hardcore and skate punk, honestly feels like a Minor Threat EP. It's good, but not as memorable or strong as the first half. My highlight was the ska "What happened to you?" It's their most consistent album, and doesn't have any bad tracks (unlike their other albums), but there's very clearly more potential here.

One of the must hear it

This is a guilty pleasure. Great memories of moshing at Balinese nightclubs during Schoolies '96. The Offspring never sounded this good again.

Loved this when it came out. Never loved another Offspring record and stopped listening. Still a good record but feels a tad dated to me.

epiiiiiiiiccc as hell. i like the narrator guy hehe. he friend. i think not the one is the only song i really didn’t care for but that’s about it. fav track: what happened to you?

Marches right through without feeling monotonous, which isn't always the case with this genre.

Really good

pretty good punk rock album but it's never been one of my favorites from the Offspring. the Wikipedia page also compares it to Green Day's Dookie, which in my opinion is a far better album in most respects. still solid for the most part with a few standout tracks. i also like the reggae influence on what happened to you. favorites: nitro (youth energy), something to believe in, come out and play

Melodic and memorable songs. The fast tempo, guitar tone and vocal style give it a lot of energy, which I really like. Some of the songs feel samey, tho. 4/7/8

An album that really lives in the punk genre while also creating a small niche for itself within it. Dexters voice in particular presents itself well and is front and center on this. Bangers all around.

Enjoyed it more than I expected to, music snobs I know spoke poorly of the Offspring, but it was some solid music.

Ah junior high. This record still feels weird to me. It's the first record that I heard that openly talked about sex. Is it "real punk"? Who knows! Is it dangerous? Probably not. But it felt dangerous. And that's all that matters.

A destacar "Bad habit", "Something to believe in", "Come out and play", "Self esteem" o los rifs de "So alone" y la velocidad de "Not the one" merecen recordar más este disco.

Pop punk. Neither pop nor punk is a new genre, so I can't give a lot of credit there. As for combining the two, I'd say that The Ramones did that way back in the mid-70s. But this is still pretty good. Offspring does pop punk well. But they're not Green Day. For me, this would be like comparing Megadeth to Metallica, but in this case it's Offspring vs. Green Day. Metallica and Green Day get five stars; Megadeth and Offspring get four.

Seemingly upbeat indignant outrage and great hooks. Sam said, "turn it up."

It’s good, definitely on the more punk end of pop punk which is great, self esteem does kinda stand out as the best track but all the songs are solid 4/5.

I thought it was going to be "dire and serious" punk but it turns out its more of a "lighthearted and fun" punk that would characterise the pop-punk to follow.

7,5/10

pioneer. challenging. inspirational. monotonous.

What a strange album to have to review for this list. I listened to this album all the time when I was younger, and to this day I love the sound of this album. However, I'm not sure why it's significant other than that it is a really good pop punk album that was part of punk breaking through to the mainstream in the 90s. I don't think it should be criticized for that fact, but it seems like a weird inclusion. Like, is there a Mighty Mighty Bosstones album on this list in recognition of ska's breakthrough in the late 90s? All pedantry aside, this album fucking kicks ass and it's a real fun listen all the way through. I don't think it broke much new ground, but I suppose it fits on this list as a sign of times in which it was popular 4/5

Still a brilliant album after all of these years. I bought it on the strength of the single "Come Out and Play", and then not only found such a wonderful selection of tracks on this album but a new band to follow and love.

Really love Dexter Holland’s voice, great album with a lot of catchy guitar lines throughout.

4+ sterren.

Classic punk rock bangers

Oh man, The Offspring's debut album, Smash, is an absolute classic! Listening to it brings me right back to my childhood, when I used to blast "Self Esteem" and "Gotta Get Away" on my Walkman like it was nobody's business. I mean, this album is packed with catchy hooks, driving guitar riffs, and lyrics that speak to the teenage rebellion in all of us. It's like a shot of pure adrenaline straight to the heart. And let's not forget about the iconic album cover featuring that poor little skeleton dude getting pummeled by a hammer. It's the perfect visual representation of the album's in-your-face attitude. So yeah, if you're looking for a nostalgia trip back to the glory days of '90s punk rock, then Smash is an absolute must-listen. I give it a solid 3,5 out of 5 and I'm rounding it up to 4 because just because it's the punk rock thing to do.

This album brings back memories. I wore it out when I was younger. As soon as the voice-over said "Ahh it's time to relax..." I started to recite every word. Self-esteem, and come out and play were in heavy rotation, but the whole album just rocks. The mid 90s heavy punk style, loud guitars, drums and bass are great. Overall great album

A really excellent album with all the speed metal guitar riffs and the ease-in scream-o vocals. Time to Relax - Fitting since I'm in Playa del Carmen this week. According to Wikipedia, "The Offspring has been labeled under multiple genres, such as punk rock, hardcore punk, melodic hardcore, pop punk, skate punk, and alternative rock." I really started listening more of this band when I moved to Southern California because KROQ played them often since they came from Garden Grove. Bad Habit, Gotta Get Away, Come Out & Play, & Self Esteem are favorites followed by Not the One.

Solid levels of angst in this one I can almost hear my young self screaming "You don't understand Mum!" as I slam the door and fling my self on my single bed and look up at my movie poster of The Crow thinking having to take out the rubbish was the epitome of war crimes, You stupid little shit. Lots of memories here, though I think I listened to Ignition more as an album there are the hits on here that got so much play back in the day. Still can't hear an Offspring song without thinking of crazy taxi though.

Really enjoyed

Been a long time since I listened to this all the way through. Just rock solid from A to Z. Killer guitar tone.

One of my favorites from high school. Aged better than I expected. Favorite track bad habit

Very loud, fast, and great

High energy, always loved this one

Pretty good album! Harder rock than what I usually listen to, but fast and catchy, a very fun listen.

Must be peak offspring this, never listened to smash before but it has the best singles on and the rest of the album kept up. Always liked offspring but would have put them below blink/green day/sum 41 in my teenage pop punk heydey, and now tbf. Saw them at Leeds one year, they had marshmallow cannons for some reason, knacked when those hit you, not sure what they were thinking there.

I haven't heard this album for a long time, it sounded a a lot more raw than I remembered. This is not The Offspring's best album but I still enjoyed it. Highlights: Self Esteem Come Out And Play It'll Be A Long Time

Overall a fun listen.

Spännande lyssning

Good. Upbeat. Fun. Party style.

His singing sounds like he is pushing a poop out. As a whole album there isn’t much variety. However it some good songs.

So much fun! I saw them at the start when they toured this album. The venue got so hot it was raining sweat.

Makes me feel like an angry 90s teenager again. Fun, with some bangers, but gets a bit repetitive. Still boggles my mind that the screaming lead singer now has a PhD in molecular biology. Some people have layers I guess.

Good experience.

Brought back awesome memories despite only remembering a couple of songs. Must have heard in full at some point, but this felt new to me. Great record.

Cool af

First time. A good one :)

An earlier version of me approves of this album.

Pretty solid album. Forgot how much I listened to this in HS. Great songs from start to finish. Then they stared making songs for 12 year olds. Too bad.

Older brother gave me this on a cassette in '95. Listening on couch, head bobbing the whole way. Still holds up well. Dexter in his prime

OK, resonable punk

What a great album. I know these guys are more mainstream, pop-punk than a legit punk band but I don't care. This one is fun from beginning to end.

Great pop punk album and also definitely one of the best projects by this very cool band.

całkiem spoko, nie spodziewałem się

The landscape was about to change rapidly in 1994 and I bet that no one had counted The Offspring to be a part of it. As one door closed, they had burst the other one open with this ceaselessly fun breakthrough album, thus cementing themselves (however briefly) as the vanguard of pop punk. Favorites: Nitro (Youth Energy), Bad Habit, Something to Believe In, Come Out and Play, Self Esteem, Killjoy Powerhead, What Happened to You?, Smash w/hidden track

Hard to beat this one in the Offspring discography. Almost all bangers, reminds me of my youth.

unrefined, as punk music should be, catchy tunes with a lot of vocalizations (yeah-hah!) making them easy to sing along with. Fun to revisit the beginnings of mainstream pop-punk.

the offspring works within a genre that i didn't pay much attention to as a teenager, much to my adult self's disappointment. i can recognize now this album is great! i didn't realize how many songs i already knew. smash is definitely punk, but not as punk as other groups in the previous decade. i almost want to call this "fun punk"? it feels more commercial than other weird punk from the eighties. ska's also evident in this album; multiple aspects reminded me of no doubt. dexter holland's vocals aren't the clearest, enough to provide some gritty, punk feeling. if you take away the vocals, the guitar absolutely wails and is more of the rock genre.

I still remember being a pre-teen and discovering my first Offspring song. I felt like I had reached the pinnacle of rebellion. Time has obviously reshaped that opinion, but into college and and even now, I still find this music incredibly fun to listen to. It's fast, energetic, and the riffs are just downright catchy. There is something about this band's somewhat dissonant harmonies and wailing that grabs you in, too. At times, The Offspring can border on thrashing ska music, which is my least favorite Offspring "form", but at their best, I feel like The Offspring is a top tier artist in the pop punk/skate punk genres, with many well known songs. Many of said songs are off of this album, so my opinion that this album is among the best of their offerings is likely not controversial. I never knew this album was released by an independent label, but it does not surprise me that it is the best selling album from an independent label of all time.

A classic formative pop punk album for sure. I think there are better albums in the genre and era and even from the band. The top tracks for me were; "Gotta Get Away" (which sounds like it should be a Nirvana song at the start), "Come Out and Play", and "Self Esteem". I think for me it gets the nostalgia boost to a 4 star rating, but I do think there are some much better albums from that year that are missing from the list.

Goeie punky rock

I liked this more than I thought I would. It's not my style, but I think it's good music.

Fun grunge punk ska stuff. Holds a place in my heart from when I was a kid.

I had a blast with this one. Made me wanna drive fast. And play Tony Hawk. High energy, quick tempo skate rock

It was alright

An important album from the early to mid-90s west coast punk scene. Many nostalgic tracks on this record. 4/5

This album was super important to getting punk back on the cultural map, which is certainly a double edged sword in itself. The album is pretty solid. It's nice to be reminded of when the band wasn't a half-baked act putting out novelty singles. I could give this album a 5 based on its importance to my discovery of the genre alone. However, I just don't think it's that good. It is definitely worth a 4 though.

Listened to this a ton as a young paperboy on my Walkman so I definitely have a soft spot for this album. I can’t say I’m gonna regularly return to it but it was still a fun revisit, wiseass snark vocals, sharp riffs and clean drums. Probably a 3/3.5 but it gets a bump to 4 for the memories of slinging news and cutting across lawns of stupid dumb shit god damned mother fuckers.

It was good, but the vocals weren't the best

I wonder how Corey is doing

kyllä minä tykkään! tahti on hyvällä tavalla kova

Always liked these guys though I never had any of their CDs as a teenager. Really enjoyed this one. Just a great example of raw early 90s pop punk.

4, Its picking up speed, quite good at times.

Yeah, straight down the middle offspring. exactly what was expected, if not slightly better.

My Offspring are much worse than this. They are amongst the worst people I know. A hive of cunts. In contrast, this record is very charming and gives me hope that one day my bastard children will die horrible deaths.

Smashing

The overall sound gets a bit grating at times, but that’s just the 90s for you. Great songs that prepare you for more great songwriting to come from these guys!

I always enjoy this group, and yet...never bought a single thing they put out. In hindsight that is really bizarre...thought by Americana I would have at least had jumped on the bandwagon and bought that one...so maybe I am a closeted fan?

[12/09/2022] Good vibing Somewhere between 4 and 4.5 stars The day was stressful and my head hurts but this album made it all kinda better

i actually rly liked this, i shall be listening again !! - been watching tons of halloween movies and chillin in bed. right now i ate a chicken salad sandwich which was actually pretty good. my appetite’s been a little off and everything seems unappetizing to me lately so i was kinda surprised i finished that tbh

This is really really good. As someone who was raised on punk and continues to love it into my 20’s, I was surprisingly late to The Offspring so to finally hear a full album is really exciting. The performances and energy are so passionate, and the instrumentation is straight up awesome; so glad I was given this so early into the challenge.

I do like Dexter Holland’s voice. And his name. And The Offspring’s blend of the angsty/angry and the funny/silly. IMO they perfected the formula on Americana but I’m biased because that’s the one I grew up with. Good album though, and one that clearly helped shape the 90s/00s pop-punk movement.

Lekkere muziek. Stem licht schreeuwerig, niet altijd even fijn. Maar er staan zeker wat klassiekers op.

Hadn't really listened to the album but had heard Come Out and Play / Self Esteem (the two big singles off the album) a fair few times over the years. It's very much the 90s skate-punk style, imo. Was expecting All I Want to be on there before checking the tracklist, since it's the track I associate most with 90s-era Offspring.

skateboards, shopping carts, women. Nothing is safe while this is blasting

Bello, gasa

Sounds like Sonic Adventure music with The Offspring vocals

Ya lo tengo bastante escuchado. Bueno

I like the Offspring and you should too

Good and fun but never as good or as fun as Pretty Fly for a Rabbi, the Weird Al Offspring Parody

I don't know if it's a feeling I get at the end of a long and stressful work week, but this really matched my energy. I wish I had been born when this was released. That would have been rad to experience listening to this during that time.

Very enjoyable, great album and brought back some memories

Lots of great songs.

The Offspring is a fantastic band with lots of memorable jams. I really enjoy this album and it invokes fond memories from my child hood and young adolescence growing up in the 90s.

First heard on the California beach with a 6 or 7 month pregnant Lisa. Extra half star for nostalgia!

More of a 3.5 for me, but since that’s not an option and I enjoyed the later tracks more than the earlier ones, I’m rounding up. Overall had fun listening to it.

Great collection of songs! This one brings me back a ways!

This was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Really enjoyed it.

Great way to nudge punk a little to the radio. It gets a little samey all at once, but that's the only knock. All trax are pretty good!

I had this album for a time and got rid of it. I honestly think I did not "get it" at the time. This is not an album to be taken seriously, but I was taking it too seriously. It's a "punk" album but the band is a bunch of punks. Listening to it years later, I have remorse for getting rid of the album. This is a lot better than I gave it credit. The stuff you hear on some of their later hits is really all here: "Why Don't You Just Get A Job?" is just like "What Happened To You?". "The Kids Aren't Alright" is like a few of the songs, probably a cross between "Bad Habit" and something else. So it's interesting to see that they haven't really evolved. Going to have to find this one again.

Love this album - a lot of pump up songs on this one including Bad Habit and Come Out and Play. Gotta Get Away is so good and Self Esteem is an all-time classic (I will never get sick of hearing it). Not quite as good as the other big punk revivalist album of 1994 (Dookie) but the non-hits are still solid. Best are Genocide, Something to Believe In, and What Happened to You? (probably could have been hits). Great energy, grungy punk sound, and satirical lyrics.

Sounded like high school. Self esteem still bangs.

Not my fave Offspring album but an absolute banger

Really enjoyed it

Það þótti ekki kúl í minni kreðsu á sínum tíma að fíla Offspring svo ég laumaðist bara með mitt fíl. Drulluskemmtileg plata. Stundum þarf bara að öskursyngja.

Loved this album at the time

Honestly surprised on how well this album holds up. This was one of the first CDs I ever purchased, and although I liked it quite a bit, I didn't think it was as good end to end as the other CD I bought at the time (Nirvana Unplugged). Happy to relieve it today though. 4/5

Listening to ‘Smash’ with fresh ears 30 years after it was released, I’m struck by how well it stands up. The Offspring may have ended up becoming something of a novelty act later on, but in 1994 they were hungry and had something to prove. ‘Smash’ does what it says on the tin, striking the right balance between anger and apathy, but with humour and urgent, catchy power punk riffs, all whilst extending a middle finger and a big fuck you to the world.

Even though the album suffers overall from multiple songs that sound like each other (not a massive surprise with this band), this album has two loved hits in Come Out and Play and Self Esteem. That brought my total from 3 to 4.

Punk Rick normally lands up aggravating me but the Offspring has a special place in my late teenage bones

Quite enjoyable. Gets an extra star for being the only decent album this week

At first was a bit unhappy with this album being my listen for the day - but it turns out to still hold up well - with surprisingly lucid lyrics and some classic tunes which might have lost a little luster with being overplayed back in the day yet are still great tracks. Almost every song is a banger. Unfortunately it went downhill for the band after this but don’t fault this album for that.

Good album, not my favorite Offspring album, still pretty good

Man, this guy has such a distinct voice. I hadn't listened to much Offspring aside from the big hits that came when we were in middle school (I was more of a Green Day guy) and I really enjoyed this. On this album, they're hardcore but also playful, and the songwriting is pretty tight and focused. A lot of the songs are pretty poppy too (the classic "Self Esteem" is so catchy). Punk is the driving energy here but there's a little grunge on the early tracks and they even dip into ska a bit ("What Happened to You?"). I also have a soft spot for "CD albums" - the intro track invites you to enjoy this "compact disc" and there's a hidden track! P.S.: Dreena yelled at me for playing this album too loud so that's how you know it's good.

goð plata i like

I saw The Offspring at a festival in the mid-90s. At that point, it was all about waiting for them to play "Come Out and Play". Listening to this album was a bit like that too, but at the same time there are plenty of good tunes before and after. It's very much the soundtrack of teen boys in the mid 90s - and kudos to The Offspring for capturing that vibe.

Stellar album. Almost all the songs are excellent. Sound is unique, but fun and immersive. Only critique is maybe that some songs sound a bit too much like another.

Great album, the best in Offspring's career. It is the best-selling album of all time by an independent record label, and that's something. Come out and play introduced me to Offspring's universe and I am thankful for it.

Arga pojkar. Klassisk album. Come out and play, Self esteem är klassiska punkhits. Likt Green Day.

really liked this album, but not as much as when i was in middle school

I had forgot about albums with silences at the end of them! Definitely a nostalgia hit for me, went in very sceptical that is required listening, but it is an album that knows what it is.

I believe that all these albums that remember me of my teenage years turn on some nostalgic critical sense that gives me much less independence. I know that I don't have any idea if these songs are really good, but they were good for younger me and when I listen to them, I respect that opinion.

Great 90s punk rock

Catchy and energetic. Some huge hits off this album that everyone has heard and have held up well for 30 years. You can't help but to like these songs, but I am not a fan of most of the other pop punk they ushered in, so I will hold onto that grudge.

Fun, shouty punk rock.

Nostalgic.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Nitro, Gotta get away, Genocide, What happened to you?

Oh the memories this album brings. I listened to it on repeat while playing Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Gamegear. I didn't bother listening again, but I'll give the album 4 stars.

One of The Offspring's good albums. I don't listen to it often, but enjoy it when I do.

90's post punk here with a nod to the past (Damned/Ramones) Some good tunes here my favourites aare "Bad Habit" "Gotta Get Away" & "Self Esteem" Not in my collection, but not bad.

Vibing

smart pop-punk.

pretty good, enjoyed it throughout

A very nostalgic, typical Offspring sounding album. Very bouncy music, fun lyrics to sing along to. An enjoyable listen throughout, especially the singles.

If I'm the drummer of Offspring, I'm ripped, super toned and worn out af after each concert. High energy music that lacks some of the later production qualities. This was Offspring before they sold out. Also includes the ultimate college youth song, Self Esteem. This song alone propels it into 4-star territory.

oh, nostalgia

It was good. Very hype. Traditional 90s punk.

I always leaned more to the Green Day side of the 90's punk revival, and have always heard these guys music as like an angry cousin to Green Day's poppier sound. I dig the rapid downstroke palm-muting vibe these guys use in their songs. Definitely the best album they ever did. I enjoyed revisiting this album a lot more than I expected.

Still a rad, rad album. So urgent.

Pretty much definition of American pop punk, fun

Great skate punk/hardcore album. This album is not terribly groundbreaking, but it’s tons of fun and enjoyable all the way through.

Great album for the most part. Some of the tracks don't hold up as well as I remember. Still enjoyable.

Great way to nudge punk a little to the radio. It gets a little samey all at once, but that's the only knock. All trax are pretty good!

I use to listen to some of their top songs all the time, but am not a huge fan of this album as a whole. Come Out and Play and Self Esteem are awesome, but all the other songs kind of sound the same.

7/10. The album cover really made me think I was going to dislike this. Honestly I probably would have liked it a bit less if there hadn't been some familiar songs that helped me get into it a bit more.

Sounds like music that would be in a Tony Hawk game. Not always a fan of the vocals but there are some classics on here. 7

Classic 90s punk rock. Still full of bangers

Offspring is good for some things: running, do pogos and, apparently, rage-writing your thesis. This album is not an exception.

Enjoyed more than RHCPs previously rated album but not as artistically good. Although many songs are similar in style the popular hits are great. EDIT: Again, this one needed to be updated. Having RCHP, The Band and The Offspring were such a strong start that didn’t prepare me for what this list held. This is also a fantastic alternative album that I play often. 8.4/10

Great album and brings me back to the Summer of my Sophomore year. No each time I add Gringo Bandito to my eggs or Wahoo's fish tacos I hear Bad Habit in my head.

Slapped I thought it was a little punky but dope

Hell yeah! Classic Pop Punk album

some great bangers in there. love the random guy who pops up with a short commentary from time to time. really makes you feel like youre sitting on the floor in your living room in the 90s and listening to the album while doing nothing else haha

Possibly one of my most listened to albums ever. Feels like I know every note on the album, yet there's still a lot of nostalgia when listening today. Brings me back to riding my bike everywhere in the summer between 8th grade & freshman year. This album and Green Day "Dookie" were the ones in my ear when biking to football practice & then to Muirfield to caddy. These are the kinds of albums that I listened to non-stop as a kid, but for some reason fell into the "guilty pleasures" category after that. Probably because I discovered so much music and went through so many listening phases that I felt like anything I listened to in middle school/high school is sub-par just because I liked it before my music taste "matured".

me likie idk jsut like it ok is that ok?

This album has a driving and biting sound that helped push and draw in new audiences to the 90's punk / alternative scene. With several larger singles, even the B-sides are solid.

Standard Offspring

Jane’s was right, this is a good album and completely new to me so that’s nice treat for my ears

very nice

pretty good actually

Harder than I typically listen to. Has the "Gotta keep 'em separated" song - and Genocide was pretty good.

I was pleasantly surprised by “Smash”. The album came out in 1994, The Offspring I grew up with never seemed to take themselves seriously with songs like “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy), and “Original Prankster”. Smash made me realize why people revered the band so much. Dexter Holland’s vocals are so recognizable and are a force on their own throughout the album. Noodles Wasserman, Greg K, and drummer Ron Welty worked masterfully together. Welty’s drumming really set the tone with him keeping the tempo at a blistering pace. Again I was more than surprised by the album and works give it an 8.3 out of 10.

90s punk. Pretty good; I never really cared for The Offspring but this album is better than I expected. Couple familiar songs on this album (Come Out and Play, Self Esteem). 8/10.

La otra que me gustó es "What Happened To You?". 8/10

felt in thps

Just as important as Dookie for reviving my punk rock, this great album is edgier with far more guitar riffs and licks giving the Offspring their special brand of pop punk. Great run time but the vocals can be a bit annoying, sounding almost like a Weird Al parody of punk at times.

First time listening. Quick 45 album with some familiar songs and “The Offspring” vibes

Punk rock. Muy bueno. Potente. Muchas canciones conocidas.

I have had this album since it came out.

Cracking

Classic

Turns out I knew very little of the offspring. The only thing I knew was the weird al covers. I enjoyed this correction

Still lots of fun

Really really good, fun album

classic

Great album !

Decent album, rocky.

At first I found jarring but by track 5 it had grown on me, once I got past the shouty shouty frontman

Killer album. Singles are amazing, rest is great driving punk inspired rock.

Better than I thought it was going to be, I knew a few songs but as a whole a great record.

Classic, proto-Nirvana style rock. A lot of known hits in this album, which get better on a second listen.

rockin

Nitro Gotta Get Away Genocide

Did NOT know Come Out and Play came out in 1994.

Pretty good, will probably relisten

Solid album with kinetic energy. I really like the announcer interlude.

I don't mind the muscular punky sound but honestly, it all started to merge into one long mass, too much of it sounds the same. Decent but not all that memorable. It made me want to go and listen to Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) though.

A good album, I liked Gotta Get Away and It'll Be A Long Time the mist.

I like this album more than several I've rated a 4 but I know realistically it's a 3. It is a very good 3 though.

Felt like an avengers movie in that if you waited till after the credits of the last song (aka the minutes of silence) there was a little melody in the end.

Never really experienced Offspring before. The instrumentation is pretty typical of the 90s punk sound, especially of the pop-punk/melodic hardcore variety. I've heard quite about The Offspring, and I thought they were strictly a pop-punk band. I would call this album at least melodic hardcore, as it still has quite an edge to it. There are melodic choruses galore, some get pretty grating because of Dexter's vocals. Just some of his wails get too much. And of course this album has a hidden track, just because it was the 90s I suppose. The minutes of silence were awful. It was fine, but I don't I will be returning to this one. I just don't really get it. Solid 3 star album. Highlight Song/s "Come Out and Play" and "So Alone"

I was, of course, familiar with "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem", but was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the album. Strong surf-punk with good musical variety and clever lyrics, even if the lead singer's vocal style doesn't quite click for me.

As a 90's kid it hits the spot but as a being with ears im ok

Listening to this album in its entirety today for possibly the first time, despite being 16 when it came out and hearing the singles eight billion times over the years, I felt the same way I have always felt about this band. This is pretty catchy and inoffensive and doesn’t bother me but it is not music I would ever listen to on purpose. If I’m going to have to listen to “punk rock” then I’m glad it’s poppy easy-listening punk rock. This album belongs on the list but it is not my thing. Not bad in any way, but not my thing.

The interstitials suck. Like bad rap skits. This is a weird album for me to assess. I definitely had it and listened to the big hits incessantly, along with “Bad Habit” because of all the swears (I was 12). Offspring are a perfectly cromulent punk band who broke out huge on the strength of other punk bands (esp. Green Day) and, discordantly, the fact that the three singles from this record ape Nevermind like crazy. It's like someone told them "you must add some grunge songs to get famous" and they did. And it worked! “Come Out and Play” is the closest of the three to a punk song but basically feels like taking the opening couplet of Smells Like Teen Spirit and stretching it out for four minutes. “Self Esteem” and “Gotta Get Away” are both straight-up Nirvana ripoffs but with lyrics that are so goddamn literal that I imagine Cobain, Vedder, Cornell, and whoever else rolled their eyes. To be be clear, they’re good enough songs, but not standouts. The rest is good-not-great true 90s punk with crunchy guitars and snares on the twos, all of which is very much my shit. That said, my taste leans more NOFX or Bad Religion, and the lyrics are pretty meh throughout. And it has a hidden track! 90s to the max.

Lots of bad words, but catchy tunes

I don't like Dexters voice. My 15yo self did.

another to the list of albums heard through my brothers bedroom wall. Its good! not great, I remembered way more of it than I thought I would, Bad Habit especially. Americana was a better album. At least you get lots of music for skate videos in the 2000's!

Enjoyable but it’s no Americana

everything by them reminds me of rainbow dash i luuuvvvvvv it

Ok, a bit samey but nothing that makes me dislike it.

decent
