Reviews (page 7 of 13)
"Self Esteem" and especially "Come Out and Play" strike me as classics of this pop punk genre. It's hard not to get a neck workout nodding along to the rhythm. There's a place or two in here where Dexter Holland's vocals remind me a bit of Kurt Cobain, and I don't recall ever noticing that before.
So they all sound the same, but that's not entirely a bad thing.
Great 90s sorta punk sorta rock. Lots of radio hits. Good blast from the past.
Loved this as a teen. For a month or so. You can sense the "we're moving from punk to pop-punk" in it, although at least some of it is closer to punk than subsequent stuff. It maybe gets an extra star for the memories.
decent
Kind of fun, but too many songs just aren't that interesting. Favorite track: Something to Believe in Least favorite: Killboy Powerhead
Having lived through the radio incessantly driving it into our skulls the 90s, like solo Morrissey, I've been avoiding it for quite some time. Giving it a fair shake now, I'll admit it's alright. I mean, I'll still turn the channel if given the chance, but I understand its appeal. I'm just not into pop punk. Still, I didn't hate it. If anything, I appreciate the 90s sounding guitars and straight out of southern Cali vocals.
3/5
Boring…
I was a senior in high school when this came out. I didn't care for it much back then; skate punk wasn't my thing. 30 years on, my appreciation for this album is higher, but it's still not my thing, apparently.
Solid. And while some of those riffs will be stuck in my head for a while, it does seem like a bit of a one trick pony stylistically and could benefit from some variety.
I've listened to songs from this band numerous times but this is the first time I've listened to a full album. Decent listening experience with my main criticism being that all the songs blend together and sound very similar. I do like they're high energy style but over an album duration, it gets old.
As a teenager I loved this album. Listening now in my 40’s, I can see why a teenager would love it, but to my adult ears it doesn’t hit quite the same. Still pretty solid pop punk overall though, just a little too obvious that they are reaching for the teen audience with the lyrics.
6.75/10 - Reminds me of driving to school in the early 2010s and listen to X103.3. Not a bad thing at all.
There's enough variation in sound to keep it interesting without it actually being all that great of a record. The grunge and ska influences keep it from being stale but I won't be returning to many songs on here. 6/10
Pretty good. I’m not a huge fan of this genre or era, but I recognize this is a fun punk rock record. Besides a couple of songs, most of the tracks sound kind of the same. I found myself not remembering where one song ended and another began. Overall a fun listen. 3.25/5
Oh offspring. The most radio friendly "punk" there is. It's not even bad, it's just very radio friendly. I think there was even a curse word or two in there. No real political stance, no sociological impact. Just fast songs that are fun. I swear they played this entire album on the radio and everyone had the CD. It was there played and was gone and you didn't think about what you heard too much when it was over. You chuckled the first time you heard it and it was over. Perfect pop punk.
Great guitar throughout the album Fun to jam to, good focus music for me Lyrically, lots of anger and cynicism... Are they ok? Self Esteem is iconic- but also, are they ok??? Therapy is a great idea The last track, Smash, is devious. I thought something was wrong with my headphones/hearing for a solid minute.
5/22/26. Very familiar with The Offspring and enjoy their sound. This album has a couple amazing tracks, but overall gets stale to my ear throughout. Would’ve given this a 5 if I was younger.
It is an interesting album, the vibe is definitely on and it would be enjoyable to re-listen too 🎸
My older brother really really liked The Offspring and since it was his job to take me to and from school, I listened to them a lot (kind of against my will). They have a few solid songs (Come Out and Play and Self Esteem on this album). I would play a compilation of songs from each of their albums, but I could leave the rest of this album behind which makes this a 3 star album.
Ah yes the favourite album of middle school boys everywhere. Despite my aversion for punk I didn't hate this one. Liked the energy, the melodic bass lines, and the fact that there's a bit of variety in the tracks. Not too bad!
meh
This made me fall asleep when I was struggling with insomnia, so I’ll give it a 3.
3.5
They sure played a part in reviving punk in the 90s. But this album doesn't even come close to Dookie.
Had to get to it several times to finish. The two hits are great, but it is difficult to listen to this album in one go. The sound, the voice, the everything, it is easy to have enough after 3-4 songs in one sitting.
Good
The announcer sounds like he’s about to go ‘Welcome back to Crazy Taxi!’
There's only so many times I can hear the same drum pattern before it starts to get on my nerves.
6/10
doggo/10
Better than Green Day
A reluctant 3 because there's nothing inherently wrong with the album, but there are much better examples of 90's skater punk. Dookie made the 1,001 albums list, and also came out in 1994, so that's good at least. But NOFX's Punk in Drublic also came out in 1994 and it's not on this list?! And Smash makes it? No sense...
A lot more fun than I was expecting.
Fun, shallow youthful anger
in your face head shaker feisty guitar grungy fast-ass drums shouty angsty rebellious
It's not a bad album, but apparently the genre isn't mine.
I can't get past the casual comedy to take them seriously but musically they are talented
An adolescent favorite I haven't revisited for decades but that stands up way better than I expected it to. Fast and furious Nirvana meets Green Day super commercial skate punk with loads of hooks to go with the pummelling drums and tightly distorted piercing guitars. They'd get extremely annoying and novelty song based after this album, but Smash is pop punk gold. Offspring : punk : : Tony hawk games : skateboarding.
Nothing wrong with this album, but this is pretty run of the mill punk music. Not for me Favorite Song: Come Out and Play
This really did have a place and I enjoy it more having heard a lot more music. You can feel it being more accessible than older punk and setting the groundwork for pop punk. These guys are more punk than pop and greenday are the flip. Interesting that grunge helped open up punk to become more commercial. Not a bad album and feels like a bridge between genres.
Great album for 9 to 17 year old bratty kids. Accessible and commercially successful punk. The production is a little flat, but the energy and melodies will catch your attention.
I have a little fondness for these guys. I'm sure this album was an explosion when it came out. I have a little more familiarity with the Americana album. This is fine, but I'd rather listen to other bands with this kinda sound.
super fun!! i was OBSESSED with Come Out and Play a couple years ago when I was first getting into punk, and it holds up alright! lots of bright, energetic riffs and standout lyrics here, even if some of the tracks kinda congeal into each other (istg this whole album is in one key). probably some of the best music that pop punk has to offer, even if that bar is fifty feet underground. also the intro/outro narration is STUPID cute I wish more albums did this
You know what, it's heavier than I like but it's fine. Oh what's that, hidden track at end of last track? 1994 - checks out.
Good.
A bit samey but a cool listen
I like this better than i like Green Day’s Dookie though they are of a similar age and some might argue a similar genre. I think i find this swings a bit more and has more metal overtones which i like more than the straight pop punk.
Decent. Added couple of tracks. But kinda repetitive
Of course I have heard of Offspring and their third album Smash, but I never actually heard the music. I had no idea that they were a punk band. The songs I liked the most were "Genocide" "Something to Believe In", "Not the One", and "What Happened to You?" One of the reviews from the album when it was released stated "it had enough riffs to keep most teenagers happy". That is exactly the problem now. I am not a teenager, yet I still liked some of it. I think I would rather listen to a couple songs from Offspring, then move on. The songs are short so that is a good thing. I was able to get through the whole album twice. I felt it deserved a second listening. I like it more than I thought I would at the beginning. I think the songs in the middle were vast improvements over the first few songs. One song "Bad Habit" made me think my Spotify switched over to Aerosmith. I did not like it at all. This is actually a pretty good album overall. 7.7/10.
Solid punk/rock - think I'm actually more of a fan of some of their later albums (never heard this one before) but enjoyed it.
They picked their singles well. The left behinds are junk punk.
It’s a bit parody rock band but I’m more impressed with lead singer Dexter Holland who has a PhD in molecular biology, launched a brand of chilli sauce, collects stamps from the isle of man, and solo circumvented the world in a plane. That’s added a star.
As with many albums, no idea why this is on the list. I only knew their singles. Great music, fun lyrics but a whole album of the pained 'singing' is a bit too much for me.
I remember seeing the video for Self Esteem when I was 11 or 12 and thinking "this is fucking brilliant". Still sounds great despite me not really becoming a fan after all. I can tell this is a great band at the beginning of its journey, they just weren't for me.
Learned to play drums to a few of these songs so it has a soft spot and this album acted as a gateway to a lot of other music. Not a band I stick with beyond this album. And Dexter Hollands voice really grates quite quickly.
punkier than expected, goofy interludes fun but cheesy by todays standards
great album
Great background music for Crazy Taxi but as its own experience it starts to feel a little uninspired. “All the songs sound the same” gets thrown around a lot in reviews but it REALLY applies here. I liked it but it didn’t really inspire anything in me. Favorite Song: Come Out and Play Least Favorite Song: Self Esteem
Used to love it. sounded thinny now.
The album that presaged the male loneliness epidemic. It is really well done, poppy, hooky, irreverent but to what end? Did this album mobilize a bunch of frosted tip dick heads to act out? I bet Pete Hegseth really likes The Offspring.
like
It's not terrible and had I heard it when it came out, I'd probably have liked it but now, as a crumbly old man, it's less interesting.
Not bad but I don’t think deserving of being on a 1001 albums list
Loved the commentary throughout and a lot of solid hits!
Fun, nineties artefact.
6/10 some good songs some songs r just sound
I liked the song I already liked. But the beginning and end were fun.
I have so much nostalgia for this but it doesn't hold up
I love the cure, just not this album.
Has one hit on it, otherwise not bad, I have a soft spot for Americana (with pretty fly for a white guy on it) but this was fun
Iako je "iritantno" još uvijek prva riječ koju bih upotrijebila za njihov stil muzike općenito, konačno osjetim šta je ovdje ključno. Čista energija.
Favorite Track: What Happened to You?
Hit and miss
Yeah
Yeah not my thing. But good for what it is.
Not a huge fan but don't hate them. The hits are pretty good. His voice does get annoying after listening to a whole album
Not my personal go to type of music but was enjoyable. Played at work, something my coworkers would listen to. 6/10
I enjoyed this album … most of it.
I can't listen to The Offspring w/o thinking about how Dexter Holland has a PhD in molecular biology. Anyway, pretty fun 90s punk.
The songs are fun, but the actual material isn't anything crazy. There's a couple of great songs but you can clearly tell that there was a formula and it gets pretty old after 4 tracks. In a strange way I love Dexter Holland's vocals. I really like the commentary dude throughout the album too because it interrupts the formulaic drone that this album can feel like. It makes the album feel more like an album to say the least. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood when I listened, but this album didn't reach me like some of its similar kind like Dookie. It's very entertaining, but in one sitting, the 4 powerchord tracks without any riffs or interesting composition can get boring. It's The Offspring, so of course the lyrical content is gonna be stupidly good, but a couple songs are pretty much about the exact same thing. But then the closing track kicks in, and it shows me that these guys are definitely capable of more. The title-track is a banger, and with the secret song at the end bringing back the Smash theme makes the album feel complete full circle. Can't get any more 90s than this. Just wish they got more creative.
I enjoyed it some songs were better than others overall not bad
liked it better than I expected kinda reminds me of when I was 13/14 /
KERR- AAAZEEE TAXI! Like much of US punk, this is loud, fast, and dumb. A couple of vaguely memorable tracks but most of it just rattles along in a chugging haze.
Infectious
An enjoyable mix of sounds from the entire punk spectrum from pop to hardcore, I like that it goes hard in parts and is more melodic and playful in others. I enjoy the strained vocals and how fuzzy everything sounds, it hits a nice balance that feels a bit more robust than the average Tony Hawks Underground band. The songwriting feels more distinct in the first half, though it might just be that I was exhausted by the pummeling drums and jittering guitars by the end.
Offspring is not for me, i like the guitars and the vocals are decent but this blend of hardcore, punk, thrash and pop punk just doesn’t land for me - low 3
It's like Green Day but not as clever, funny, catchy or well produced. The famous tracks are a lot better and really stand out from the rest.
Even if it's hard to differentiate one from another, I'll always have a soft spot for a bit of good skate punk.
It's a good time
Great album, guitars on fire, power riffs and many many many things to jump and train :)
6/10 I prefer it when the drums aren't going at thrash-speed - it's exhausting. "Self-esteem" is still a great track. It might have been Nnirvana-lite for MTV peeps, but who cares? A great tune
Took a while to get into it on hearing it for the 1st time, but it was OK, not great. Lots of filler.
3.5⭐️/5 03.30.2026
It’s ok, don’t Ike a singers voice
Not bad
Beautiful sound of the 90's.
Fun album, upbeat classic punk rock. Clean production. 3+
Misheard "Genocide" Thought he's singing "Donkey Kong" Does that matter? No
I never engaged much with The Offspring, but I liked a lot of this. Self Esteem was a standout. Kinda loses steam in the last 3-4 songs, but I read they wrote those in like 2 days so not surprising.
Never listened to this before. Loved bad habit, come out and play and self esteem. Found myself foot-tapping the whole way through and thinking about how cool it would be to be a skater in 90s California "/
This album, anthems of my youth. This was on repeat many, many times. For SoCal pop punk, it's generally fun. Dexter's voice always struck me as compellingly sonic. That said, I don't think the album was particularly groundbreaking -- maybe it hasn't aged well for me, I guess. I think there are others in the genre that would get more listens from me these days. Nothing particularly wrong with the album, and I enjoyed reminiscing as I listened again, but not one I think stands out versus others. I'd play it from time to time but not in my main rotation.
Kinda enjoyable. I do feel like the socal bands on this list are a bit soulless. Low 3
This sounds like Nirvana and/or Green Day. I like Nirvana and Green Day. This isn't as good. Sure, there are a couple of tracks that played over and over on the radio in the mid 90s. They are ok. The rest is a bit too shrill and a bit more too annoying.
Solid, some good hits. Singing is kinda monotone though.
Some catchy stuff.
Yeah, it was fine.
Come Out and Play is a classic but the rest of the album is a bit repetitive. American pop punk has never really been my thing.
This is the shit my sister would bump in her Pontiac growing up. So punk and edgy 00’s teen. Tony Hawk pilled. I didn’t realize I’d heard this band so much before, just never knew em by name. Will definitely be bumping this band more. MGK really thought tickets to my downfall hit like this
There’s a lot of interesting things to record. It is Green Day adjacent but they both came out around the same time. What makes this unique is the voice over that makes it seem like a cool radio show, it’s pretty dated in its jokes but that’s fine. It’s also very ska which I think is cool and it’s a party record and definitely would be lit in concert and live. The music itself was samey a bit but the guitar work was amazing and I very much enjoyed.
Review - this made me realise I've never really listened to The Offspring, I've just tlietneee to Americana 1,000 times. I'd say that was a smart move. This album was ok. Some decent riffs, a few decent songs, but it's no Americana. And Offspring of the era weren't the best pop punk going, but I can see why they're the band that caught on with mainstream audiences. This album sounds a bit like Bad Religion for people who don't do politics. Rating - 6/10 Need to hear? NO
brought me back 3 stars
It’s a pretty typical dad rock album. Most of the songs sound the same to me.
Was 13 when this came out and probably haven't listened to the whole thing since but it was still a fun album to listen to. Brought back memories.
Not gonna lie I was kind of dreading this one... I think I got enough of The Offspring as a teen to last a lifetime. The last album we reviewed was a debut (also 1994), and while this one is early along in the discography, I'm not observing much of an "early" sound to the band. It's The Offspring. Completely and undeniably. Which I suppose is a credit to this being their breakout album. That said, the album has an interesting shape. The first block of songs are focused with their punk revival sound which gets broken up by the playfulness of the major hits right in the center, and then back into a bunch of short and sweet high energy punk songs (along with a ska-like) which ends on a nearly 11 minute song that is mostly silent in the middle until finally ending on some riffs from Come Out and Play. I do like that move after the thesis lyrics of "I'm not a trendy asshole." Similarly to CCR, the main vocals carry such a distinctive sound that songs kind of meld into each other in spite of varying themes. Hang on -- Oh God. Oh Jesus. Spotify just pulled up the thumbnail for the Hit That music video. I forgot about that beast Oh God. I must look away now. Goodbye. See you tomorrow.
This was okay but it was nothing awesome, I guess. Everything just sounded very similar. While I did like the speed and energy in the beginning, this lack of variation made it a bit less enjoyable towards the end and overall did not make it very memorable for me. I knew "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem" already and I think those were my favourites from this album as well.
Bratty, loud, sometimes annoying but not without merit. I feel kinda weird for loving this as a teen and definitely don’t think it aged as well as say Dookie, but guitar parts are pretty good and I had fun relistening. Half a point for nostalgia and for the secret “song” at the end.
pretty fun, aber pls eimol kei rock & co album
Always liked The Offspring but never loved them. Solid album. Some iconic early pop punk songs
Instrumentally, it's some great, colourful, energetic punk that should absolutely be my thing. It's a shame then that, vocally, these guys have never been my thing. The guy just can't really sing and drives me up the wall.
This one is kind of a mixed bag. Some of the songs have excellent guitar riffs and basslines, and the whole band seems very cohesive. Then on other songs it seems like the singer and drummer are not even in sync. Some songs like "Come Out and Play" have thoughtful and meaningful lyrics, and others like "Bad Habit" are just edgy for the sake of being edgy. Overall there are some good tracks on this album, but the I'll pass on the whole thing.
I've always kinda liked the single from this "Come Out and Play" - the cute little guitar lick, the way the other guy comes in with "gotta keep 'em separated." It was fun to hear on popular radio at the time, felt a little transgressive. Unfortunately, the rest of the record doesn't do it at all for me. It all seemed kind of insincere, like they wanted to be badass but weren't able to pull it off. I think my problem with pop punk is that I'm not 14 years old. 3 stars though, because I do like that one song. Too bad the rest of it is so vacuous.
Grating throughout the album, but really not bad.
The year of my marriage - not quite my scene, but acknowledge this musical period.
As a 90s punk rocker this is bringing me back to my roots, although I liked NOFX and Green Day better. Still, absolutely solid album, and the sound of my youth - it was good to revisit
Fun (at times)
The blows. But also it rules. Come Out and Play is an all-timer.
Come Out and Play followed by Self Esteem is a great one-two. Solid album. Grimier than the newer stuff, angrier.
It was cool, a little loud but still cool
Goos stuff
Solid punk but vocals give me a bit of fatigue.
it was good just lots of repeated drum patterns throughout the album making it all sound quite similar, if i had to describe it its like spontaneous grunge
Finally a punk rock album that I don't hate. The instrumentals are energetic, and most importantly the vocals aren't bad. I guess this is the era when punk rock starts moving away from that annoying 70s singing style, and we start getting some decent vocal performances. Leaving in the minutes of silence in the track "Smash" is silly though.
Bien para dejarlo de fondo. 3/5
I have mixed feelings about pop punk, and Offspring in particular. Like, you’re from Orange County, what are you doing here? The 90’s and 00’s were over saturated with this stuff. But now in the fullness of time I can appreciate it more. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find myself nodding while listening to this.
Given a three for nostalgia. I was born just after The Offspring got famous, but their music was the background to much of my early life when I could decide what to listen to. Good thing I listened to them when I was so young, because if I didn't, I don't know how much I would have enjoyed this album. It's juvenile and uncomplicated, either riffs that sound less Offspring at times and more Bad Religion, an obvious influence now that I've listened to the latter. It's not a complex album, and at times is too simplistic. They made better songs as they continued as a band, so if it weren't for the nostalgia I would have probably given it a 2. That being said, there is something also nice about listening to people, in uncomplicated and direct lyrics, tell you that the system is messed up. That level of honestly probably didn't have much cache at the time of the album's release, but as time has gone on it's only become more relevant. Turns out uncomplicated is what people need at time. And may be necessary for others. Highlights include Gotta Get Away, Come Out and Play, and Self Esteem.
The energy is definitely there but the mix feels muddy and the nasal vocals are not really my thing. It clearly suffers from budget constraints that were not turned into a creative choice and compared to their later polished records this one just feels technically lacking and uninspired.
I've tried to get into them before and it's never really stuck. There are some songs I do really like, I think they're cool, and don't really dislike their stuff but just not really my thing. I group I appreciate more than I want to listen to.
3,5
OK I had Blur yesterday (the "lesser" of a who's better rivalry between them and Oasis) and now Offspring who (at least in my circles) were compared to Green Day. I'm expecting a Megadeth album any day now. For the curious, I'm team Oasis (barely), Green Day (though I like a lot of Offspring singles) and Metallica. I guess I'm just basic that way. Anyway this is a 2.5 bumped up to a three because 2 seemed too low. So a 2.55 really. Again, I like the singles, and the other parts were palatable enough but made me sort of wish I was listening to Insomniac or something.
Admittedly cheesy, but I’m here for this nostalgic bubblegum punk pop.
Fine
Carino
While Self Esteem is a great song, overall I found the high-speed punk riffs to be overdone and a little annoying. Not every song needs a high-octane, nonstop wall of grungy guitars at the expense of any variety in instrumentation or dynamic range. There is very little variety on the album, and the only mood seems to be “overexcited and vaguely pissed off.”
Self-Esteem will always bring me back to driving through Westerville Ohio with a new drivers license, the windows rolled down, stereo blasting, and smelling like pizza from my pizza hut shift. The rest is not that great for me. Also when their next album came out that pretty fly for a white guy song was inescapable on the Pizza Hut jukebox, nearly rivaling Hotel California for PH jukebox dominance.
I like how The Offspring's albums are all so different while also all being the same.
a thrashy nostalgic sound, it's consistent all the way through. I would have liked to have heard some range from song to song. I enjoyed it, and it brought back some memories
Energetic and quite fresh sounding, but nothing really grabs me. I’ve always found the vocals a bit annoying as well. Not an unpleasant listen though.
every song is the same
Harder than I remember! Some of the songs get a little boring.
I grew up listening to The Offspring. It’s very much teenager music to me which can be very fun to revisit. I had no idea so many of the songs I grew up listening to were in the same album, so that was a cool surprise. This listen made me go on their page and play Pretty Fly for a White Guy. Nostalgic and fun but also repetitive frequently.
Hit the spot on a bleak Monday morning.
Come Out and Play en vooral Self Esteem springen eruit, maar verder voelt het album vrij eenvormig.
The early parts of the album sound more old school like Bad Religion maybe and Gotta Get Away sounds inspired by Nirvana. Ultimately enjoyed this I think but the second half of the album is a lot less interesting…
first listen to this and I think it will have to be played a few times
Smash delivers a classic punk sound, which was a bit unexpected but works well. The album is energetic and direct, with strong, punchy guitars throughout. “Nitro” stands out as a highlight, and the riff on “Come Out and Play” adds a cool, slightly oriental touch that makes it memorable. While the energy stays high from start to finish, the album can feel a little repetitive at times. Still, it’s a solid and enjoyable listen with plenty of drive.
Got a teeny bit samey at times, but overall pretty fun. I suppose some of this energy branched out into what is now pop punk and some of it into what is now ska? Also I'm sorry but he sounds so much like Weird Al Yankovic it really threw me
Oke
Pretty generic with a couple of bangers.
fun
Early pop punk with a few well known songs.
OK
Nicer than expected
Very angsty, really fun. I don't know if I can listen to a full album of the Offspring. just a song or two. But it was fun to see a secret track at the end!
Liked in high school but doesn’t have the staying power as other albums. Probably just under a 3.
We used to play Come Out and Play in marching band 😂 Anyway, punk isn’t really my thing, but this was pretty decent. 6/10 Pretty Good
Oh man just seeing this cover makes me go right back to middle school. Everyone had this album. I haven't heard it in a long time and didn't really care for The Offspring back then so it'll be interesting to see how this goes. Well I'm still not a fan of Dexter's vocals. He's always been kind of grating to me. And throughout this whole album, all I can think of is Crazy Taxi. Remember that game? It was super fun. This album sounds very dated listening now. The 'secret song' was a big thing from this era of music and now it's just kind of irritating. Especially when your preferred streaming platform has a final song of 10+ minutes with a silence of 8 minutes in the middle just to hear some bullshit 'song'. I can see why a lot of people would still like this album but I don't think it's quite for me. I still really hate the vocals. Music is fine, but I wouldn't listen to this again. 2.5/5
Offspring get better as they go on. It's weird. In fairness I can't rate this album too low it's fun skate punk and I have a weakness for these morons, but not the best.
Top 3: 1. Not the One 2. Genocide 3. Self Esteem Least Favourite: Killboy Powerhead
Good but a little bit samey.
I expected to hate this record but I actually found it more than listenable. Sure, it's punk rock as much as I am Marylin Monroe, let's call it pop rock, but who cares?
Eh fine
Really dope guitar tone throughout and I really enjoyed the punk vibe. Many songs were somewhat indistinguishable from one another but the ones that stood out were pretty fantastic. I recognized two tracks from the radio and I will for sure be listening to a few others in the future. Nothing especially my taste but really solid stuff and music I can appreciate.
This record is older than I remember. Super listenable nostalgia bomb though.
I love Self Esteem, but not much else grabbed my attention.
Really enjoyed some tracks of this record. Not the biggest fan of the punk genre but I liked how accessible this was. However again the biggest downfall is all the songs sound nearly exactly the same. Some even in the same key as the last. Put maybe that’s just punk. I can pick out a few songs to listen but won’t be doing a full album listen again
Coldplay left me well, cold
Trying to ignore the screechy vocals is difficult, but I actually enjoy the instrumentals. There are times when the singer tries to hit high notes and, uh, fails.
Day 177 Pretty fun pop-punk album. Highlights Gotta get away Self esteem
Come out and play is a good song and the whole album brings good nostalgia vibes but I wouldn’t say it’s *great*
Listened to it a lot back in HS.
I was never a fan of this genre Offspring Green Day Blink 182 Sum 41 But you couldn’t get away from it in the late 90s. Some songs are good. Some are just yelling and the same. I don’t feel better for hearing this today. 3 for the good songs.
Ridiculous album cover. Sounds like rock, but there is nothing that really makes it stand out, but not bad. Also weird inclusion of the five-ish minutes of silence in the last track
You gotta keep em separated. 5/10
The only song I know by this band is 'You're Gonna Go Far Kid.' Which is kind of a surprise after listening to this album because it doesn't even sounds like the same artist. It's still angsty, perhaps a little more than I prefer now that I'm older. However, I still found this pretty enjoyable for the most part. There are some great riffs in here that are worth noting!
Two really good songs, a lot of okay songs.
Couple of great tunes but a lot of samey ones
Just good fun
was never massively into the Offspring in my teenage years, I'm more familiar with their "Crazy Taxi" offerings. good shit tho, some bangers
This brought back memories of Uni, not as shouty as I was expecting - more if a happy/fun vibe, didn't mind it.
I definitely had this, or Mitchell did, in the cd case back in the day. I listened to Americana, the one with the cockroach on the cover and Pretty Fly (For a White Guy), way more. There were a couple tracks here that triggered some recognition, but not many. It took me a couple tries to get through this album, but the back half is a lot more fun. A little bit of humor and a self-deprecating narrator go a long way for me. Also, Chelsea and I watched another 90s artifact a couple months ago, Idle Hands, which features The Offspring performing at the high school Halloween dance. That movie holds UP. Also also, the singer’s got a pretty interesting Wikipedia page (for a pop-punk singer).
non è assolutamente roba mia
This was all the rage when it came out, brought punk music to the masses. It is commercial punk, there are a few fun songs but most of it is pretty repetitive. I think there were better punk bands making better music they just didn't get the recognition from the industry. I would add a few songs to a playlist but not an album I would listen to all the way through again.
A couple of great songs, the rest mehh
1/30 Not bad. Just makes me think of Tony Hawk Pro Skater or Crazy Taxi
норм
The riffs are good, but this just seems so inauthentic. It's overproduced - so many parts are doubled, and it seems like there's a novelty track on every album. With a rawer sound, and less puerile lyrics, this could be a great album.
Kinda sick, also kinda not. Idek. Stand-outs - Something to Believe In - It’ll Be a Long Time
A bit redundant but good beats.
Recognize their voice immediately. Familiar with the hit songs. Understand its place in punk uprising, but not a band I would listen to the whole album again.
Loads of energy and attitude
Good, if you are in the mood for something out of a skate/snowboard video game from the 2000s. Not bad, but you need to be in the mood for that sort of experience. Between 2 and 4 depending on context, so I'm splitting the difference with 3.
Difference between like and respect - I respect but don't like. His voicing is too, too whiny.
A great political album! I really enjoyed the sound and message. While my favorites are the singles, each song was worth a listen.
The vocals aren't actually that much more annoying than any other similar band. 3.5*
emo rock musik, meistens das selbe rumschreien, die stimme die ein durchs album führt ist cool, fav song: itll be a long time, 3/5
quite accessible punk sound. Not sure if they ever made it to UK. Weird last track.
Noisy but fun. Best song Self Esteem 3-4
Smash n’ Sk8
You know, this album wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I really do enjoy the scrappy skate punk songs that make up the album’s deeper cuts. I guess I approached this album thinking it would be bad based on the singles, which are forever stuck in radio play purgatory. Specifically Self-Esteem—seriously, what the fuck even is that song? Everything about it is so ass. The wailing non-chorus, the perpetual vi-iv-i-v chord progression, the shitty ra-ra intro. It’s fucking cheeks. Banish that shit back to hell.
fun intro. yell singing.. oh boy self esteem. this that white boy grunge that goes hard. hit the vowel sounds with a vengeance. Why does the song Smash have 7 minutes of dead air?
It’s a bit like if Kurt Cobain was really trying to carve away at a sound that would later become pop punk. Which is exactly why “Come Out And Play” was included in a THPS game and every other extreme sports montage of it’s time. “Bad Habit” is the inner monologue of my coworkers who openly admit they scream at drivers almost every day on the way home. “Self Esteem” makes my thoughts about the Kurt Cobain comparison especially true. I know a lot of guys wanted to sound like that around the mid-90’s, but this is a bit insane. I think I got a bit bored around this point in the tracklisting too. It’s all west coast surfer punk rock from then on (complete with the almost skapunk “What Happened To You?”) -- a novel concept at the time, now a niche sound from a bygone era. I’m feeling on the slightly positive side of a 5/10. Hindsight is unfair to this album, as Blink-182 would soon come along and crush this genre in a more refined, digestible, fun manner.
The Offspring is fantastic! I was never as big a fan of them as I was of the Pearl Jam’s and Smashing Pumpkins and STPs of the world, but they were great and this is a good album.
Not bad. Would be better as an EP because it gets old about halfway through.
One of those albums your friends tell you about in high school because they found the lyrics crude and funny and angsty. I was surprised I knew so many songs simply from that exposure, and I think this music held more appeal for me back then. But there’s still some solid tracks on here and as a lover of punk I appreciated getting a closer glimpse at the group that launched a thousand pop-punk bands.
Liked the dirt track after the intro, loved the nostalgia of the intro and last song having a ‘bonus track’, not my usual cup of tea, but was fun
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The music is great and there was a couple of stand out tracks for me (Self Esteem, It'll be a Long Time) I've never been a big fan of the vocals but yeah, this was pretty good.
I can't stand the lead singers voice, but damn some of those "nu-punk' tunes are catchy. Liked Songs Added: Come Out And Play Low Sel Esteem
Not bad...
Strong 90s album, with a lot of memorable songs. I don't think it's as good as Americana, but that could be just a personal preference. Highlights: "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)" and "Self Esteem"
Mwah
the guitar technique actually sounds a bit metal, so this feels like punk metal almost. i don’t mind a few songs but a whole album is too much for me in one go. fave songs: ‘come out and play’ (reminded me of pretty fly for a white guy) ‘self esteem’ 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
not my usual type of music, a bit aggressive at times but definitely can see how this would be good in certain times and places. reminds me of a certain era of angsty teens and its fun to reminisce on that time of life.
Whilst this is clearly in my wheelhouse and does what it does well, it really doesn’t draw me in as much as other bands such as bad religion as lyrically it’s seems overly simplistic. That said it’s chock full of great riffs, massive bass and singalong choruses
Listened to 2/3 of it. Decent but definitely felt a little dated for me.
Repetitive songs on this album w the beats, but two iconic songs on this one so it gets some redemption
I would not have guessed this was The Offspring’s third album. I have always been indifferent about The Offspring. The second half of the album is much stronger than the first half.
Great energy, an enjoyable album, love the lyric "Oh, I know I'm being used That's okay, man, 'cause I like the abuse". This is another of those 3.5 ratings for me.
Though I've never particularly liked the Offspring, it's hard not to admit they found a pretty good groove on Smash. They sort of combine the sounds of Bad Religion and Green Day together to make a high-speed car chase of an album. The vocals are a lot more bearable than many of their other projects, mostly because they're not trying to be something they're not. Dexter falls a little more in line with Greg Graffin in his vocal delivery, which I think suites Smash much better than his more strained whiny sound from Americana onward. The major downside of Smash is just how poorly it was produced. It's very blown out and distorted, which can have a certain charm to it in some contexts, but doesn't work well for the sound they're going for in my opinion. The album is also a little gimmicky, the spoken word segments really not adding anything and the silent outro being overdone to hell, certainly contributing why the album just feels way too long. At the end of the day, Smash is a perfectly serviceable Punk album, but there's no day that I wouldn't rather listen to the countless better records from this era. Smash has a handful of decent singles, but over the span of 46 minutes it really loses its punch for me.
Some good songs, but the album doesn’t hold up to some of the other great ones on this list
This is definitely an iconic album for this genre and time period. I obviously knew all the songs that were hits, but the other songs were new to me. I enjoyed listening to it.
Just okay. It has a couple good songs, but overall… eh. Impressive given its success with album sales produced under an independent label. Favorite song was Self Esteem.
So far i like "genocide" and "come out and play", "It'll be a long time" the most (not mentioning Self-esteem ofc). The offspring generally not the type of bands i like despite them performing my favorite genres.
“Come out and Play” is one catchy song. A one hit wonder that the never paid attention to before lyrics now give the song a totally different take. Rest of the album checks the boxes for the nineties genre it was a part of…and that’s ok.
It’s fun and catchy, but there’s nothing groundbreaking here. I gotta say, Americana is my favorite Offspring album and I’m curious why they chose this one
Def felt like I was playing Tony hawk pro skater
Self Esteem is an easy a favorite on this album. That far in the album some breath was much needed. Didn't save any other songs to the collection, but it was a fun listen.
Overall fun but the lead singer's voice annoys me at times.
Loved this when I was 14, then hated it for years, listened today and I think it's fine. Surprisingly well played, except for the drummer's extremely 90s habit of switching to the ride to "change things up" on every chorus.
2.5
3.0
this album felt a bit too long for my taste, they didn't have enough creativity to justify 46 minutes in my opinion. And there are three or four songs that are actually worth listening to. Nevertheless, the music in the right mood can get you pumping esp. self esteem, genocide, and bad habit
I look back at many 90s albums with nostalgia, this isn't one of them. Favorite song: Gotta Get Away
Not as cringey as I was expecting based on the likes of Pretty Fly and Why Don't You Get a Job, but I struggle with the singers weedy voice
i liked a few tracks but the album as a whole didn't leave much of an impression. the songs all sounded quite similar
I kept zoning out it's a fun album it's just not that rememberable
Listened to many punk bands back in the day; this was never one of them. Some cool riffs and melodies; doesn't feel seminal. Hence 3 stars.
Great calofornian garage/punk rock. Bavkground guitar kinda stays in this same sharp, fast rythm througout.
Good mall/ pop punk. The big singles do most of the work but I also liked some of the other songs and the bass player.
I mean, it’s fine. Pretty unremarkable 90s punk rock but there are some highlights on here. Wasn’t a fan of the skits, I just found them corny, and I still don’t love the vocals, but I enjoyed the instrumentals more than I thought I would. Not a bad listen, but probaly not one I’ll be returning to soon.
really fun listen but don’t think i’ll revisit
I like this record. Nowhere close to a favorite, but a nice trip down memory lane.
Really good hang. Had no expectations going but enjoyed for a certain mood and context.
Soft asmr type energy sleepy time tunes
A few fun jams but honestly kind of repetitive as a whole (I swear Dexter Holland sings the same note for like 60% of the runtime). Lot of energy, not as much personality throughout. Favorite Tracks: Bad Habit, Come Out and Play, What Happened to You
Around the age of 12 the song pretty fly for a white guy was one of the coolest songs in my world… Keep them separated was pretty up there too. This type of album makes me think about slamming a can of beer and then crushing it on your head to go skateboarding and also all of the jackass movies a little bit. Did anybody else wait for the last track at the very end for the hidden bonus song?
the interludes were very fun, not expected for music of this genre. I am not very often feeling the amount of energy to LOVE this album, might be revisiting on a gym day...
The Offspring are pretty rock'n but their songwriting is not super creative and all their songs kind of sound the same to me. All their albums seem to have at least one or two hits but the rest is kind of meh.
well that’s just another pop punk album, nothing really special. though it would be so fun to mosh pit to this one. if i was 14 i’d probably loved it way more 3.5
i enjoyed the intro and outro bits, didn't love the 10 minutes song after the outro though. unfortunately...the rest of the album kinda sounded the same to me...6/10
I don't get why this album was chosen on over Americana? If there's one McDonald's punk album by these guys you'd pick surely it would have bee the album with back to back household name singles? This just sounds like skate punk for virgins. It was still an alright listen, but nothing stood out to me at all. It also felt like it went on for fucking ever despite only being 45 minutes. I always appreciate a hidden track though, and this has 2!
Hell yeah. 3.5/5
bon
Well this is just fun
Very listenable and enjoyable
Was good power-punk; nothing here I would come back to.
Offspring are a singles band. I honestly hadn't heard most of this before. Self Esteem is an absolute belter though. Come Out And Play is decent too. Rest fairly forgettable. 18 year old me would've loved this live though.
this album reminds me of the Skate or Tony Hawk soundtrack games. usually, i have a difficult time actually getting into punk rock despite me liking the message behind what they're saying (fuck the man/system), so this was album was a nice surprise. i found myself enjoying it more than i thought i would based off the first 30 seconds of the opening track. i doubt it'll be something i return to but i had a pleasant time during my listen.
sure it's ok i guess, nothing special though
6.4/10
What am playing crazy taxi or something?
Great 90s punk
Classic of Punk-Rock. Self Esteem has been a long time favorite.
Not my thing. Some honest lyrics though 3 ⭐
good ol punk rock. makes me wanna skate. or play crazy taxi
SoCal punk rock supreme. The only problem is Dexter Holland, who starts at 10 and goes from there. I'd like The Offspring so much more if he put more Zack de la Rocha on it.
