Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Enjoyed, a bit samey. As expected. 7/10

Très Disney Channel

8/10 I had too much fun listening to this album when I was a kid to give it any less. Still a fun listen. 11-19-2024

Big 4. Multiple classics that i enjoy.

Melodischer Punk. Geradliniger Pop mit viel Kraft könnte man auch sagen. Wow.

A great album. I wore this thing out in High School

A fine album all around.

14/11/24 I would have given this album 5 stars but I didn't realise when the songs were changing as they all sounded too similar.

This album was me discovering I would have been a real loser if I was a teenager in the 90’s lmao

Another album my teenage self loved, just before their American Idiot era. It’s still great but for me especially the most famous songs on it.

Very effective punk rock with moments of greatness and sometimes cheeky 4.25

4☆/5 11.08.2024

Far more enjoyable than I'd expected. Not sure if I'd call it punk, but I don't think anyone should care either. It's a top notch 3 piece band - each instrument can shine and there is still room for some joyous snotty nosed teenage musings.

Took a as minute to get going and settle in, but a great album with a quiet, weird, but fun ending I had never heard.

Puts the pop in punk. Very teenage, very one-note, but I can't help but like it. Songs to hate suburbia by. Billie Joe's voice is whiny, but it's a pleasant whine. There are also some great basslines on here. Yes, there's very much a formula that they stick to here, but it's rarely boring. As befitting a POP punk album, the best songs on this are the singles. They knew. Fav tracks: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around

Takes me back

Dookie is so good. I love Dookie. Once I had Dookie in my ears, I was having a great time 👍🏻 Not the Green Day I grew up loving but in retrospect (which is the case for a lot of my fav Pop Punk bands as a kid) their early sound is so so strong and this is like, probably their best work

i feel like i have ostrich egg all over my noggin

First half is top notch, after basket case gets a bit filler-y. Welcome to Paradise is such a tune. 3.75/5

Green day are so recognisable and this was a great listen. Basket case a highlight but a fun listen throughout

Favorite Track: When I Come Around

Malgré une apparence d’explosion et de désorganisation, tout est orchestré et réglé au quart de tour. Il y a du génie dans la finesse des paroles et son alliage rythmique à la musique

Punk pop on the rise.

Straight up manic, hyperactive VIBES. Absolutely loved most of the songs. Weird ending songs though, feels like they just phoned that in. Maybe by design?

good silly fun. simple constant instrumentation is pushed to creative limits in the best way

Standout bangers interspersed with pop-punk that gets you going. The sound may fall on the commercial side but the earnest themes about anxiety, loneliness and mental health prevent it from being cynical or trite. Will definitely relisten.

This is definitely one of the reasons i’m doing this. I used to think Green Day was on the really bad side of punk where you couldn’t believe they would actually do anything punk whatsoever. That may still be true but I have a lot more respect for their music and band as a whole

makes me feel like a skater

Pretty fun! Songs blur together a bit. The singles stand out and I don't think it's just because I knew them already. Of the album tracks I liked Pulling Teeth a lot. 3.5/4

There are some men of a certain age, probably wearing an old Ramones t shirt that’s a bit too small for them nowadays, who would look at this album and complain that it’s not ‘proper punk’. I would counter by saying that here we have 15 banging tunes in 38 minutes, dealing with boredom, alienation, growing up in an uncertain world that just doesn’t care, as well as the usual teenage concerns of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. What could be more punk than that?

Funk as puck 🤘 Yeah, that was fun, but didn't The Buzzcocks do it all twenty years earlier?

A solid album – one of the better punk entries on the list – just slightly edging out American Idiot as the strongest "well-known" Green Day album. The album seems less full of itself, less insistent upon itself (as the famous saying goes). It exists, first and foremost, to provide a clean, energetic punk-rock sound – rather than prioritising proving its own cleverness. This is something that American Idiot fell prey to, though that album was still very good. So, Dookie. A sharp, consistent, relatively simple-sounding (particularly in terms of harmonies and instrumentation) setlist, with a surprisingly good ratio of meat to filler. In fact, upon a first listen, I'd argue that there was essentially zero filler – except maybe the closing track All by Myself, which is a goofy little aside that probably should've gotten the chop. Save that kind of lo-fi acoustic fluff for breathtaking swansong projects like Abbey Road (though even in that context, Her Majesty is questionable). My favourite tracks are also the ones with the most Spotify listens: Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, Longview, When I Come Around... Seems like Green Day fans (and to an extent, the musical public) know their stuff. 4/5 Key tracks: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around

Dookie has great punk rock vibes and is more or less the starting point of Green Day’s music for the average fan. There’s quite a lot of timeless hits on this album that are still played frequently 30 years later. I love the Green Day style, but admittedly the non-hits do eventually run together a bit more than I’d care for.

This album absolutely rocks. 100% listenable. Will just say it doesn't do it quite for me what Blink does, but that's a preference thing. Thoroughly deserves 4/5 imo on listenability alone.

Stilechtes Album im Green Day Sound.

Really fun listen, enjoyed it a lot.

Is a classic and was my first exposure to Green Day back in the day. But, it lacks consistency. A handful of bangers but a lot of meh songs

Lemppari: Pulling Teeth Vähiten lemppari: Having a blast

This album is so boring as a whole. I remember so many of these songs from when I was younger. But Jesus, as an album you could put these songs in any order. It’s like 3.5

186/1001 Se cumplen 20 años del glorioso #AmericanIdiot, pero todo empezó con este. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

A keeper

This is a fantastic record and certainly where the band started finding their iconic sound. I don’t love it as much as their later work but there are some great tunes on here.

I think we have this CD but I never listened to it. I would listen again now.

Good stuff

A really good album.

Not all in. But I like it.

There are some great songs, some good songs, and some real let downs. I think the strength of the good songs, as well as the rhythm section, keep the album moving forward.

Classic pop punk album that I remember listening to on repeat on cassette.

I listen to this every so often, and it still hits.

Brash yet fun pop punk Driving and melodic noise Self consciously whined

Really good album, didn’t realise how many bangers were on it. Kinda tempered off towards the end of the album so not 5 stars

Confession time. Many of these songs were forever ingrained in my youth, the soundtrack to a million mix tapes, CDs, Winamp playlists, hangouts, and parties, but I'd never heard this classic album in full before. By the time I became an album collector in my later teens, I was also an insufferable music elitist douche that considered these pop-punk pioneers and their light-hearted attitude beneath me. Something for my younger sister to enjoy. Listening to this was both deeply nostalgic and strangely fresh. Full of Big riffs, solid basslines, clean production and no skips, it's an undeniably great album that holds up well, no matter what my stupid 17 year old self thought.

While I'm not huge on Punk, Dookie is a great album with many of Green Day's great hits, although I found the start of it to be somewhat weak compared to the rest.

What an extremely good sounding album and well mixed, whom ever plays the bass goes hard. Definitely punk at its best but it's still punk. It's not like going on a wine tasting tour, it's like just go to the pub have 12 beers and have some fun.

15 tracks in 40 minutes, bro needs to chill out They call it dookie because this album is the shit. HYEEEAYEEAAAGH

Their first masterpiece. And I kinda remember there was a bit of a split in the music community at the time. Were Green Day the next big thing in rock, or way too commercialized pop/rock fraudsters. For me, it was clear they were special. Their mix of rock, pop, punk, and even grunge and keep the songs catchy and also have some songwriting depth? The proof is this album still holds up after all these years.

Прикольная панкуха, очень задорная и приятная.

Not as good as Kerplunk and with more filler, but still decent. Perfectly timed for 15-year old me. The best songs are brilliant, Longview, FOD and Welcome to Paradise in particular (although that is already on Kerplunk). Listening back it's pretty clear they were already starting to run out of tunes at the point they signed for a major, which is a real shame, but there's at least 5 songs here that should have been b-sides only, Sassafras Roots the most obvious. Can't bring myself to rate it lower than a 4 though, partly for nostalgia but also on merit due to the serious bangers spread across the record. Anthems for bored teenagers in suburbia, and the last good Green Day record. I mean yeah it basically is The Ramones. Putting Kerplunk on immediately afterwards for a proper good time throughout.

One of my all time favourite albums! Great from start to finish.

Okay so I thought - meh, Green Day, never was into that. And then you listen and you realize how solid this album is. Upbeat, uptempo, songs about everyday man and everyday problems. I wouldn’t say I like Punk either but I like some Punk, and I don’t like Alternative either, but clearly some Alternative is pretty good. This is pretty good stuff.

Siis tämä on roadtrip musiikkia!!

Love their edge, and somehow their songs don't sound repetitive.

Great Guitar Riffs Lyrically not as good as some of their later work

Classic punk album. This is a great listen.

Voice of a generation. Hard rocking but relatable. From "Basket Case" to "All by Myself" - honest, sometimes funny, always straightforward.

Fun punk rock that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Stone cold classic

90s pop punk doesn't get much better than "She"

I almost resent Green Day being good, but goddamnnit, this is great.

Very fun and energetic album from Green Day. Had a great time listening to the Dookie album and it definitely helped uplift my day.

welcome to paradise

Awesome album

Some cracking tunes - stood the test of time

Great album. Different and loved the vocals.

Yeah, I can relate a lot the the lyrics, still.

I actually enjoyed it on the way back from Miami. Solid songs, some definitely better than others.

I loved this album and thought this is going to be an easy 5. But listening through again for the first time in years it didn’t hit quite as hard for me as it once did. The great songs were still great but a little too much filler for a 5

This is such an iconic album that you just have to love it.

It’s a good album can’t argue that, I never was the biggest fan and consider them a bit overrated. Coming back after almost 2 decades to listen from start to finish you really appreciate that this album had 3 solid hits which is rare. I probably let my mainstream bias cloud the relisten for years

Another one that I haven't heard as an album, only random songs here and there. It starts off so very 90s. Outside the songs I already knew and liked, the rest all sounded very similar - the start of GD's signature sound but not quite their peak. 4* Highlights (songs I already liked): longview, she, fod, basket case, welcome to paradise

Some great songs but also lots of filler, so not a perfect score.

Pop punk banger, really established Green Day as big dogs. Loved it

This was my favorite album 10 years ago, let's see how it has held up over time.

First off: stunning album art! Doesn't this image encapsulate the 1990s? Like the ending of 'The Day of the Locust' by Nathanael West but with Nintendos, AOL, and Fruitopia. Even dogs are getting into the crosshairs. Self-destruction is not the word I would use to describe this album. I don't think Billie Joe Armstrong inflicts serious pain on himself, but you certainly believe him when he says he thought about it. Take "She" and "Coming Clean," two songs that are Queer-coded and discuss Billie Joe's bisexuality. You'd think that there would be more coverage of this during this initial album release, especially with Pansy Division opening for Green Day on the Dookie tour. To me, that upholds a real kind of supervision and commitment to punk ethos that you would never see from, say, their contemporaries in SoCal punk Blink-182. And unlike Blink-182 (a band that's crass but not all that vulnerable or, frankly, interesting), Green Day does perfect a model of retaining legitimate SoCal punk roots within a framework of commercial success. People accused them of selling out for this record after parting with Lookout! Records and signing with Reprise. In a few reviews on this website, I see people make the point that this is NOT punk, but in fact pop-punk or just straight pop. Personally, I can't think of anything LESS punk than aligning yourself with traditionalist, conservative views of music and genre. Not that I'm defending obvious industry plants or talentless hacks assembled in a boardroom by high-priced executives, but come on. Lobby your complaints at literally anything else. Besides, I feel like Green Day have some serious SoCal punk bonefides. Why else would they opt to go with Rob Cavallo from The Muffs in the producer chair? Maybe they didn't want to be confined to the technical and production constraints of DIY, but that doesn't mean they abandoned the ethos altogether. Anyway, enough about this, let's get to the music. There are so many good, satisfying dips. The rhythm section of Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool charge so effortlessly on "Having a Blast" and particularly "Longview." One thing that I particularly enjoy about SoCal punk (even though, it's not my favourite scene) is the few times in which it dialogues with other canonically Californian subgenres. When you hear that bassline in "Longview," it rings exactly like surf-punk. I appreciate that Green Day is not afraid to embrace other influences in their music. On "Pulling Teeth," you can tell these guys were playing a lot of Beatles covers. The 90s pop-punk version of "I Should Have Known Better." I'll wrap up with highlighting some of the excellent images in this record found in Billie Joe's lyrics, which I feel speaks to the very excellent album cover: "Get me off this Velcro seat and get me moving." "Smoking cigarettes, wasting your time.""I'm feeling like a dog in heat/barred indoors from the summer street." A-

Happy Grunge. X-over between Dinosaur Jr and the Smith.

Somewhat weak start from what I remember (first 3 songs) Picks up after Longview- I see why that single was so succesful

This album is ubiquitous with pop punk. 30 years later it still sounds like something that could have been written today. It threaded the needle of expressing indie teenage angst while appealing to the masses and still holds up nowadays. The hits from this album are still punk anthems decades later. Green Day was everywhere shortly after this album dropped and stayed close to the top for a long while. I saw Green Day somewhat recently and they still have it. I rarely play them in my regular rotation but whenever they come up in the wild I'm always surprised how much I know and enjoy their music. Dookie will always hold a special place. 3.91 stars

Selling out or perfecting their craft which happened to coincide with mainstream audiences? Whatever your thoughts were at the time or today, the tunes here are rapid and relentless.

This album has a lot of character I think probably the most of any Green Day album. Probably the best Green Day album. Only because the direction they chose to go in it just wasn't as artistically interesting as this was. The middle stretch is fantastic. Beginning is pretty samey and the ending is interesting.

This one is a classic, and the definition of how Punk (or any) music should be: fun, with great musicianship and songs and good quality songs with great melodies. It's not too much to ask for, but for a long time it was for the genre. This deserves all the praise it got. 4/5

La portada va igual o incluso más dura que el disco.

Will die on the hill that “Pop-Punk” is the worst genre of music to exist. Wretched, cringe-worthy, yank trash. Saying all that, I have a soft spot for Green Day and have enjoyed their music from afar, without every being really invested in the band. This is the first Green Day album I’ve ever listened to and unsurprisingly, I enjoyed it. It’s fine, nowt special, just fine. 7/10

So many classic tracks on this one, and the vibes have really held up well. I remember oogling the album cover art as a young kid, and giggling at the silliness of the final track. Aging wonderfully.

Excellent, super catchy pop punk

I like Green Day but their rhythms make me feel tense if I listen too long

I came to the Greenday party a little late and although I cherry-pick the Greenday albums I listen to, this album is definitely a cherry. 15 songs in 38 minutes, It's absolutely non-stop! The energy is just awesome.

Feels like there's a ton of bangers mixed in with bland and boring songs. If this album was 8-10 songs long it would feel like a best of compilation. Still one of the most well produced Green Day albums. From when they were in their peek. Favorites : When I come around, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

So much fun listening to the old Green Day, haven't listened to the band in a while do this brought back, the will to take a listen to their other albums too. Great band, and good songs.

Great listening, but not peak Green Day. I really like it, but I don't love it. 4/5

'Dookie' along with 'American Idiot' are probably the 2 top Green day albums. 'Dookie' here has a little more of a punk edge than the latter which is a bit more commercial. In my experience both have great tracks and peoples primary preference usually comes down to which one they heard growing up. 'Dookie' is a strong album with a lot of hits, and is rightly celebrated as such and have influenced many a teenager of the time and still does with it's angsty and slightly edgy lyrics shouted with emotion. Standouts Basket Case When I Come Around Welcome to Paradise 4/5

All by myself almost dropped the album to a 3.

I’m sick of the “hits” from this record. They make physically ill at this point I’m so tired of them. Thankfully the rest of the album is really good. This album is better than the “hits”.

It's now two years since I reviewed "American Idiot" and had to change my mind on the band I’d loftily reacted against all through high school… these guys were good. And “American Idiot”, far from their breakthrough, was the band’s second wind: ten years before, Green Day had recorded their third album "Dookie". Initially seeming much less polished and more slapdash (in a good way) than "American Idiot", it too was criticised at the time, with the band accused of "selling out" to a bigger label.    So I wasn't sure what to expect from "Dookie", but it's turned out to be a great record. The influence from the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash and more are here, honouring punk’s heritage for a new generation of angst. Instrumentally, it’s pretty bare: nothing is needed besides Tre Cool’s relentless drumming (abusing the ride cymbal), Mike Dirnt’s ultra-trebly bass and Billie Joe Armstrong’s crunchy, mostly rhythm guitar. This economy of sound works to the album’s credit, as we bash through one pithy takedown after another. While “Burnout” is an effective opener and “Longview” gets a lot of love as a single, for me things really hit their stride from fifth track “Welcome to Paradise” onwards. “Pulling Teeth", a slightly sketchy portrayal of domestic abuse played for laughs, is wonderful musically: a sugary stomper which calls to mind Teenage Fanclub. “Basket Case” and “When I Come Around” are rightfully fan favourites and classics of their genre, with a perfect mix of power and melody. But it’s "Sassafras Roots" that might just be my favourite: busy bassline, straight-ahead drums, and a refrain built around the words "wasting your time". Ultimate slacker punk.    Take a bow, Green Day: after years of deriding you on impulse, I concede that you have made not just one, but at LEAST two great albums.

Great album. This is a really nice, tight punk album that really influenced an entire wave of pop-punk through the 90s/00s. Lots of great tracks and just an exciting and interesting set of songs. ****

Dookie isn't my favorite Green Day album - the production value kind of sucks, but the songs are all there. It was revolutionary for the world of punk-pop and it launched a thousand bands.

Haven't listened to it properly, but will catch up in free time. I was mostly busy grinding Zone Zeneless Zero, so yeah x) I haven't lived through the era when this music was relevant, but this style is instantly nostalgic to me thanks to Tony Hawk's games and the 2000s pop punk rennaisance. Kinda speaks to me.

extremely fun to listen to, solid across the board

Very familiar with the band but never listened to the whole album. Not bad, but not as great as I remembered.

To this day I still regularly throw this album on from time to time and enjoy it. It’s a classic in my eyes. The energy that they bring through out the album is incredible especially given the precision of their playing. Of course it’s a lot of punk standard chord progressions but I always felt like this was more of a strait forward rock album more than a punk album. Mike Dirnt’s bass lines were always impressive to me, so memorable and catchy. Tré Cool’s ADHD drumming keeps things locked while still staying busy enough for a three piece to stay interesting. Billie Joe’s brain worm melodies are catchy as hell and delivered with urgency. I feel like American Idiot is their masterpiece but this is a close second. For that reason I give it a 4.5.

It has been a loooong time since I've listened to this one all the way through. There are some bands that own their genre, and I think Green Day owns pop punk. Every song is super catchy. They are great at what they do. They also put in a lot of hard work on their own dime in the beginning, so they are deserving of the success. I like She and Having a Blast as favorites.

Very worthy of this list!!!

太朋克了

Lots of great hits here, and the album really holds up after 30 years.

Good album, high energy

Good album. Very solid early green day. A few great tracks like Longview, welcome to paradise, basket case, she and when I come around.

This is another of them albums which is hard to judge, like Linkin Park, Slipknot etc. 15 year old me loved it despite never really being a huge Greenday fan. 36 year old me isn’t really bothered by it. But I guess it was never made for 36 year old misers. Aye it’s a good pop album that flirts with lite-punk, and the 90s would not be the same without it. In fact most bands I loved at 15 (Blink, Sum 41, NFG etc) wouldnt have existed without this. And without those types of bands I might still be listening to MPeople. Maybe that’s its purpose. It aint trying to be serious. It ain’t trying to be punk. But it did get kids into pop-punk and maybe they later got into punk and this was pivotal in that. A gateway record. And it has some undeniable classics on it. An essential record for the teenage years, but for me that’s where it stayed and where it will be staying. 3.5 rounded to a 4

At the time, you either liked emo music or skater music, and I was more into emo. I don't mind Green Day at all, and this album is a classic. Welcome to Paradise and Basket Case stand out, of course, but the rest of the album zips by. Good stuff guys. Wondering when we'll get some My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy though.

I really like Green Day and this is a solid Punk album. It's been a long time since I've heard this and I can see there is a 30th anniversary edition now which makes me feel proper old. It's not my favourite album that they've made but there are so many great tracks. A younger me would have given this 5 stars. This is fun, short and sweet. Highlights: Longview Welcome to Paradise Basket Case When I Come Around

Я всё ещё больше люблю american idiot, но тут тоже неплохо, тут тоже есть кайфули apes duking it out как сказал Рафаэль Амброзиус Кусто

The 90's really was a great decade for music. So many different types\genres coming to the fore and progressing in different directions. This is another great album.

Does this deserve 4 stars? Idk. I think the majority of the album are great. First few songs are a lil weak.

No. 201/1001 Burnout 4/5 Having A Blast 4/5 Chump 4/5 Longview 4/5 Welcome to Paradise 4/5 Pulling Teeth 4/5 Basket Case 5/5 She 4/5 Sassafras Roots 4/5 When I Come Around 5/5 Coming Clean 4/5 Emenius Sleepus 4/5 In the End 4/5 F.O.D. 4/5 All By Myself 3/5 Average: 4,07 An all around great punk rock album. Really enjoyed this listen.

Another blast from my teens.

A great early 90s pop-punk album.

A classic album from my childhood. Hard to believe it’s 30 years old.

Good songs on the album, but the b-sides I wrstay their welcome.

Listened Before? Y A staple of my HS CD collection. Good stuff. Their best album until they outdid themselves 10 years later. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: She, Coming Clean

I bought this album when it came out and liked it a great deal. Still do it turns out. Remarkably if one takes it at face value it speaks a bit of gen X angst. If one digs deeper it reflects on how the gen X "whatever" was not so far off as it seems we cannot politically move forward. I hope for a day when the meanings and lyrics of this album will be novel and odd, but truth be told, just like with NWA, unfortunately it is more relevant than ever...

Dookie isn't my favourite Green Day record, it's a bit early in their journey from my preferred sound but it's still excellent and has loads of great songs. It's pop punk at its real infancy, there's that immature sound that later becomes more nuanced and accessible, but this is punchy youthful energy with more quality than everyone else who was trying the same thing at the same time, and ever since. Longview and She are two of my favourite 'lesser known' GD songs, Basket Case is iconic forever, there are no bad songs on here but it's a 4/5 from me because there was much better to come and this set them on their way.

Not quite as good as I remembered it, but still some real highlights. Somehow combines being a bit rough around the edges with being a bit too down the line and lacking energy in places to be real punk. Basket Case is brilliant, Longview and She not far behind, When I Come Around is a bit too poppy for my tastes really. They're better (at this stage of their journey anyway) when the vocals are more front and centre. Think it still just about squeaks a 4, but let me down a little compared to my memory of it.

Look, I love Green Day and Dookie is a classic. Upon careful listening, it's really a variation on a theme, there are some absolute bangers on here, but the others are like.. less good versions of the bangers. It's knocked it from 5 to 4 for me.

Better than I remembered. When this came out, it was mostly annoying boys who looooved it, so I think I reacted against that. Love the drums and some of the melodies.

It's not American Idiot, but you can see it from here. While I didn't find it as immediately catchy as some of their later stuff, there are a couple of classic hits and I enjoyed the nostalgia

I thought that I had listened to this album before, but I’ve only heard the hits. Love Basket Case. Other stuff was good too.

This album makes me feel like I’m 10 again.

Really good album. Not as great as I remembered, but still very good.

One of the defining albums of punk rock? Interesting. Much prettier than the name of the genre sounds.

A set of great songs, plenty of punk energy. What's not to like.

This album won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album. Am familiar with some of the songs, but I know I haven't listened to it all the way through as an album. Saw the group live during their American Idiot tour, way back in the day. Enjoyed the album. Many familiar songs.

Amazing album and i can see why it revolutionised pop punk music

Enjoyed this. Haven't really listened to a lot of Green Day before but glad i did. I liked the energy and the music is good. Good listen 👍

Not a big punk guy, but Green Day is the exception. Good lyrics, smooth beats instead of screaming guitars, percussion, and vocals. One if the best. 4/5

Oh yeah, this is one of the landmark albums in the pop-punk genre, which makes sense for this list. Tre Cool's varied and kinetic drumming, Mike Dirnt's memorable bass lines, and Billie Joe Armstrong's very personal lyrics over power chords make this album work exceptionally well. If I had to nitpick aside from the off-putting hidden track "All By Myself", it's that Dookie is a genuine 90's album; a lot of the attitude and tone throughout these songs are of the time it's from. It is certainly one of the best representations of said time though, and as such still gets a high recommendation.

I have to say that I was thrilled to get this album. I'm not sure I've ever listened to the whole album, although I can't imagine I could have avoided it. I am certainly familiar with the cover. I expected to give it a 5, but I think it's a 4 from me. "She" still feels too relevant once you actually listen to the lyrics. Listened to the original track list, not the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition with 5 discs, 65 songs, that runs for 3 hours 21 minutes. That is excessive.

Lots of fun

Green Day are such nice guys, and this is full of bangers. Happy memories of car journeys with the family.

Fun and kick ass album. Neither my first or last time listening to this. This is truly Green Day's best work and the kind of music they do best.

Great album, stong throughout

Toppie!

I’ve heard Green Day’s music but I think this was the first time I’ve listened to a full album.

Great album, love this one. Didn't realize how much Green Day reminds me of Misfits

Dookie was a huge part of my childhood, this cassette was on heavy rotation for my paper route and I will always have fond memories. Pioneers of snarky pop punk with rockabilly tinge mixed in. It’s fun, humorous and comes thru musically as well. When I Come Around or Basket Case may be what most people first turn to but Longview is a fucking jam and clever as it gets. On top of being awesome front to back this is also an iconic album cover too. 4 stars

A classic nostalgic album with some awesome hits (and great album art as well). 7/10 (3.5/5)

Solid album with some all time bangers on it, I didn’t get into every song but was more than happy to listen to this one all the way through for once.

It's punk, just played by actual musicians, which is pretty cool! Sadly, I'm too young to feel nostalgic about it and too old for it to resonate with me. However, it did resonate with me when I was younger and I still get why it did.

Teenage memories have me walking into this with Rose coloured glasses, but also expecting to hate it. Turns out, it's still great fun

Old school Green Day is great. Head Bobbing the whole time.

peak of pop punk era

Favorite Tracks: Longview Welcome to Paradise Basket Case

I dare you to sit still.while listening

A defining album of the time

Hehe poop, pretty good punk rock but gets a little repetitive towards the end, gotta love basket case

I got this album the same Christmas that I got Nevermind by Nirvana. This album was my favorite at first, before Nirvana completely subsumed my adolescent mind. It's fun revisiting an album that I have such a long history with. This album holds up really well. The production is excellent, and you really have to give Green Day credit for knowing how to write a great pop song 4/5

It bad

Green Day never sold out. They didn't change their sound to reach a bigger audience. Almost none of the bigger pop punk names of the era did. It's just that their music became popular all of a sudden on the wave of more rockier alternative music in the early to mid 90's. And while this might not be greatest of all albums, it's full of youthful enthusiasm and lyrics that are ripe to sing along with. Which I have done, very loudly, this last day.

AM I JUST PARANOID, UH-YEAH-YEAH YEAH

4/5. A pretty catchy and loud album. Sure the production could be better and the lyrics are hard to understand sometimes but I get that it can be the aesthetic. The vocals are definitely straining at times but I cannot deny the songwriting is top quality. I do appreciate the personal takes, feels grounded and relatable. Best song: Chump, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case

Really solid old school pop punk album. Too bad Green Day isnt really that good anymore in their later years.

Great pop punk album. Short and to the point, no filler, just pure fun. Very nice drum playing too (Tre Cool - that has to be ultimate name for a pop punk drummer?). Makes me think of the good times, playing playstation with my friends in the morning before going to school for the afternoon. 4/5

Very fun

Great stuff.

4/5 felt like punk rock paradise. Loved it

good Green Day

Lot of great songs on there. Wouldn't say they're all fantastic but still good.

I liked it

Remember this playing way too many times in middle school. Now it's fun to listen to it again. Easy listening.

I liked this since I was a kid really nostalgic

A great pop punk record that is culturally significant. I understand the significance of this record and how it influenced a lot of the music I grew up listening to. There are about 5-6 absolute classic bangers on this record that I have listened to so many times in my life and will always love. The rest of the album is actually pretty forgettable in my opinion. It might feel blasphemous but due to the other like 9-10 forgettable songs that are pretty repetitive, I think I'm going to have to rate this one a 4 instead of a 5.

This album has been with me since I was in elementary school. It's one of those creative mixes of "meh" songs and then absolute bangers. Everytime you start to feel a little fatigued, they throw in a Longview, Welcome to Paradise or When I Come Around. And frankly, I can't blame them for having a few boring songs. That's kind of how these records were being produced back then. They really just wanted to get out as much music as they could. I can't say this is the original bored suburban teenager, but it's maybe the most successful and maybe the most influential. Is there anything as visceral as Basket Case "do you have the time to listen to me whine about nothing and everything all at once"? Or Longview's "masturbation's lost its fun." And yes, I would eventually become too cool for Green Day. They "sold out" in the lamest way possible. But when you take a step back and just listen to this record for what it is, putting yourself in the timeframe that it came out, it freakin slaps. It's impossible not to enjoy it.

Fun album. With some fun songs.

In contrast with American Idiot, I kind of enjoyed this. Sure, no new ground is trod, but the boys play with verve and energy and for a pop punk album is pretty good to listen to.

Have never listened to this whole album, but I'm glad I did! Very very solid album that drives the whole way through. "Basket Case" really jumps out at me as feeling *different* than the rest of the tracks.

Somewhat slow start and then 7 straight classics. One of the best albums of the 90s

Hmm I'm gonna be bold and say there's some fillery stuff in here BUT the hits are HITS!!

This album is so maddy coded, I already know she’s gonna give it a 5. It’s the perfect angsty teen, blast your room cause tour mad at your parents album. My two gripes are that I often couldn’t hear the vocals over the heavy instruments, and all the songs kind of blended together towards the middle. Burnout and longview were my favorite tracks, I hated the laser sting tho. Still a solid album overall tho

Definitely, my favorite is Longview. obviously the vocals on this whole album are just amazing.

Nostalgia

Possibly the most classic pop punk there is

I know this album well. First cassette tape I ever owned. Haven't listened to it in a while because I used to play it too much. It's a great album to listen to when running.

Surprisingly good! Really liked this album

An album that was an integral part of the defining sound of my teenage years.

The first and last Green Day album worth paying attention to in my opinion. I can’t deny that they were my gateway to punk rock. And man did they un-punk themselves pretty quickly. The music got poppier and poppier until it turned into a Broadway musical. But this album is a really good starter kit for kids to wrap their head around the thrill of being obnoxious. And I’m not embarrassed to play it as an adult. Fun nostalgia.

Just great song after great song, it’s amazing this album came out as early as it did. Green Day defined the sound of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater years, just 5 or so years early. So many pop punk, skate punk, or ska punk bands based their sound and attitude off of Green Day, from blink 182 and Sum 41 to My Chemical Romance.

Punk-rock de los 90 en su máxima expresión. Contiene varios de los himnos de la banda.

Excelente álbum! Siempre refresca escucharlo; una energía poderosa y rejuvenecedora

I don't care if it's pop or pop punk or punk, it's Green Day and they write catchy tunes with quirky, introspective and opinionated lyrics. I was around when this was released, it was great then, it's still great, don't be snobs.

I was late to Green Day but really liked them when I finally started listening to them. This album has a couple of classics.

this sucks

basket case i when I come around prejebene, ostale ok. Sve u svemu dobar nostalgican vibeic

Always a Green Day fan. Good earlier album

Yes, I can see why this is highly-rated. It didn't set the world on fire for me, to be honest.

Green Day captures angst well, and although they might've sold out in terms of punk, I'm glad they did. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have had these hits to enjoy in my youth and angst filled teen years. Not as relatable anymore, but still a lot of fun!

If I could give this album a 4.4 I would! There is just one or two songs that were meh. Everything else is good

I think nostalgia makes this album sound better than it actually is.

Very good.

First time listening to it all the way through since a friend's house in 1995. Massive singles are big and bold as ever, with "Chump", "Pulling Teeth" and "Sassafras Roots" standing out from the album track crowd.

Solid 4, good classic Green Day.

Classic, very familiar

POP-Punk!!! Catchy songs with angsty lyrics. What's not to love. Best Tracks: Longview and She. Honorable mention: All by myself.....because I have the sense of humor of a 12 yr old boy and think is funny.

Old school from Back in my Teenage years. Liked it!

its fine.

This album is anything else but „dookie“ killer punk rock album

Really interesting songs

Classic

Loved it. Massive nostalgia hit.

fun album

Basket Case is the big hit but there's plenty of pretty iconic pop punk anthems here. One note stuff but it does it well and the album is the perfect length to keep energy levels high throughout.

Pretty good album! I like that! Very good band! Album 31 was all around pretty good. I'd say maybe an 8 or 8.5 out of 10.

I like green day, some good songs here not much else to say except its four

BL: Listened to lots of this album before, comprised a major part of my lockdown listening, specifically "she". This is my second Green Day album on the gen, and I look forward to it being just as good as American Idiot. AL: Was incredibly tight and compact and clearly served as a blueprint for all that came after it - the problem is with classics like this though is that overtime they get outdone, still incredibly fun though FT: "she", "when I come around" 4/5

first listen a bonafide classic

podjeljena sam, volim green day al nije mi nesto wow album 3.5

pretty cool album, basically what I would expect from a green day album.. this is what a large portion of music around the year 2000 sounded like

Honestly, this was a lot of fun to listen to. Pop punk but with bleaker, more relatable anxious themes!

Much better than I remember.

I went into this thinking I could have a possible fiver on my hands. However it fell just short, really liked it, but it needed a couple more Basket Case level songs to get top marks! Simpsons reference: Green Day are in the film!

Very much enjoyed this when it first came out and still enjoy this today

I don’t even know how to rate this album in 2023. I probably listens to this more than any other album from 94 to 96. I think it still holds up as a prime 90’s pop-punk album, and is more enjoyable to listen to than most anything else from that era. There’s a reason Green Day is still more relevant than NOFX or Offpsring or any of the others.

This is the kind of music i thought cool kids listened to when i was about 6-9. You know, the ones that had bunk beds and tvs in their room. Honestly really fun. Hadn’t listened to green day outside of american idiot and i can see why they took off, its just pretty great pop punk. Basket case and sassafras roots are highlights for me.

Hey I was just talking about this album and I'm going to see this live this summer so how topical. My favorite kind of punk sounds by far and probably there best if not 2nd best album they released. There are some weaker tracks here but luckily they all end rather quick then move on. Still a great sound to the album overall. 8/10

Instantly recognizable. The band that brought punk into the mainstream and made it accessible to wider audiences, even if die hard punks don’t consider it punk. Some of their best and most notable songs on this album including my favorite song of theirs “Longview”. The later half of the album is a bit weak after “Basket Case” and is a bit forgettable. Still a fantastic album. 8/10

Bouncy and fun — more fun than I expected, although I like American Idiot.

Had more fun with this then I was expecting. Pop-Punk hasn't ever resonated with me as much as it does for many people, but I dug this big time. This had a laidback angst and flow that I prefer to other variants of pop-punk filled with the whiny American yelling. I especially liked the vocals throughout this, found them oddly comforting, whether that's nostalgia or just his voice I dunno, but I liked how it made me feel. In saying all that I'm not sure I feel that inclined to listen again as it does feel somewhat dated and does get a little bit repetitive. Fav track: Longview Strong 3.5/5

Pure pop-punk, not too shiny or cheesy, loaded with angst, very fun. New most of these tracks but not sure I ever ran the whole record through a lot back in my Green Day era. The style has passed me by so I don't know that I'll return a lot but for what it is, its a really good time. Three and a half. Fave track: Longview

Had a lot of fun listening to this - they sure had a good punchy sound cultivated back in these days. It’s silly and catchy and I could definitely return to this. Three and a half. Fave track: Basket Case

It was nice, again very short, but was a mix of stuff, last song felt out of place

I always though I was too cool to like Green Day when I Was younger. This album is really good, wish I would of actually listened to it.

A lot of good songs. I found a couple irritating. Slightly dated.uplifting though.

I didn't love this album when I was a kid, but there are really so many great songs on it. Not sure what my beef was, but this thing is great.

I've never been a Green Day fan and I guess I never will be. Supposedly, this is their "best" album but... well, I think I enjoyed "American Idiot" better. I mean, sure, "Dookie" has those massive radio hits that everyone in my generation knows, the harmonies are fun, and the licks are memorable. But, compared to real punk rock, it feels slow and lazy. The raw, buzzsaw energy of punk has been replaced by a west coast surfpunk energy and I just don't want that in my punk. It's mostly fun, though. And those radio hits were and are generationally defining for a reason. Strong effort. Just... not a 5-star effort.

I am by no means a fan of pop punk. Put on something like Blink-182, and you most likely won’t catch me singing along or head banging to the music. Simply not my era. This may seem stupid, but I’ve always seen it as a little cheesy. But that doesn’t mean I don’t respect a band like Green Day. I can admire the success they’ve had over the years. Some people not so much. I understand the gripes that people can have with this group. It’s ok to not like a band after hearing it so much. But elitism is the most draining thing ever. Like yes, we are aware that you don’t think Green Day is “real punk rock”. And yes, we are aware that you think they are sellouts. But should you really care that much? Someone like me, who has very little experience with this kind of thing, can still find enjoyment. I always admire three piece bands, because it’s harder to pull off the same level of musicianship as some bands with double the number of members. Each person is Green Day is a talented musician to say the least. Especially Tre Cool. That guy is one kick-ass drummer, and I love when he is absolutely tearing it up on the kit. I found that the songs on here that are more contained and less wild are not as interesting. But there aren’t too many of those. Most of this is quick and loud, which I enjoy. I pride myself in having a good intuition. And I had this feeling from the start that by the end of this, I would be tired of it. You can kind of get a sense after 3 or 4 songs of whether or not the album is going to be repetitive. But to my surprise, this wasn’t as much of an issue as I anticipated. I was slightly fatigued by the end, but all of the shortest songs are saved until the end, so the fatigue was mostly balanced out. Green Day are huge for a reason. It’s okay to not like them, but it’s also obnoxious to tell every fan you meet that their favorite band are shitty sell outs. Am I glad this is one of only two albums from them on the list? Yes. But do I hate it? Not at all. Rating: 7/10

Really fun album to listen to.

Ok, it’s not good…but it’s effective. Also so darn nostalgic. Basket case will never not be a vibe

The first half is okay but in hindsight sounds a lot like plenty of other post Dookie commercial punk bands. The second half is quintessential Green Day though. So difficult not to foot tap or nod to drum rhythms. The balance and dance between the drums and guitar is so consistently cohesive. It's obviously much more radio friendly than the punk/grunge prior to their success but this is so clean it's undeniable. Love the giggles in the background of All By Myself. Can't imagine how fun it would be to have amount of success with your brothers.

What a great album with a few tracks that were less good. This album is such a huge nostalgia trip. I can sing along and just feel like that 6 year old skater boy again. But now I listen to it differently, the instruments stand out more and the mix is great! Standout tracks: Burnout, Having A Blast, Chump, Longview, Welcome To Paradise, Pulling Teeth, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around, Emenius Sleepus, In The End, F.O.D., 8,5 out of 10

Simplr but fun and enegetic

Much better gym soundtrack than Willie Nelson.

Hecking classic

It's a good 'un.

iconic pop "punk" by 3 idiots

Classic

Classic album with a fair proportion of bangers. Pretty innovative for the time. You can hear some Latin rhythms dressed up as punk double stops. Definitely Hwhite people music for the most part, but decent music to get some aggression out.

Very fun record. I've been listening to this one for years now, and it's always a good time. A bit repetitive in the back half, but overall some of the band's best work!

Classic. My high school years. When I Come Around is the best track.

Was very hard to not break the speed limit listening to this album. I passed so many people.

I didn't expect Green Day to sound so... not punk. Pretty solid album, though!

Dookie reminds me of being 16 and hearing the Descendents for the first time. That super fun raw energy where you just wanna slam dance and have the most fun you can. But that is really where it ends for me.

Wow, it's been ages since I last heard this album. It's still great!

This album was fun… favorite songs were come around and the first 2.

i've never been a big green day fan, i'm not so much a pop punk person in general, but there's just something about this album that is so damn nostalgic. fun all the way throughout, aggressive, yet tongue in cheek. really well made. just an all-around good time!

Liked it, gave 3.5ish stars

Nostalgia!

good, snarky, but good

Green days best strong 4, can get a little

I cannot objectively analyze this album because i listened to it so much in high school. Though it's not something I've returned to often since (and not at all on the past 15 years), it's still etched into my brain, and I enjoyed dusting it off.

There’s a few songs that offer a glimpse of the more pop-forward style that is to some, but mostly just solid punk bangers.

Hat mir bisher gut gefallen. Trotz eher negativer nostalgischer Gefühle. Ziemlich poppig, das war damals natürlich auch ein anderer Eindruck.

Better than expected. Liked a lot of songs

klasik

Like the fast paced songs, good amount of songs that I liked. A bit same-y, but I think that's due to the singer's voice, rather than the songs. I prefer this album to their other one that I rated (even though I know more songs from that album American Idiot or whatever). Solid 4****

Este es un clásico de los 90. Maravilloso, pero a ratos se hace largo. Son 38 minutos, así que en realidad deberían ser menos canciones.

Like many bands (Blues Traveller?) all of the songs sound the same...certainly like they were written/recorded on the same day. In both cases, the music is hard-rocking, and while it doesn't turn me into a Green Day fan, I can totally give 2 thumbs up if this is your type of music. Hard-driving garage rock with good punchy lyrics that you keep moving forward. Definitely not "mellow out" music for sure...

Classic album, so I liked some I didn't

Rather fun

Feels like being 16

Nogle virkelig fede numre, kort nok til det ikke bliver monotont, god energi. Umiddelbart det bedste 90’er poppunk genren har at byde på

Holder 100, den her plade er så fed!

this is NOT Dookie

Comparing this album to American Idiot, I think AI has better production, but Dookie has more soul. Overall I think I like the songs on Dookie better, good stuff.

The only good Green Day album. No punk-ballad BS, great songs throughout.

Before the went and did that stupid thing, oh yeah, got political!

A great album in their major label debut Popular music was shifting away from grunge, the massive popularity of No Doubt is still a few years away. This one ushered in the pop punk era in the 90s. Lots of great tunes on this album, from their hits like Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, Longview, and my favorite, When I Come Around (my favorite), to others songs like Chump, She, and F.O.D. it's a great album.

some tracks felt forgettable, but its an overall great album. perfect punk

Yesssss!!!!!! 🤠😎🤓 Loved it. Started my morning with this, good energy for the whole day!

Classic nostalgia when i wished I was a teenager

While this isn’t my favourite pop punk album, this has aged surprisingly well in my opinions and it’s still a very fun listen throughout Favourite tracks: Chump, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around, Coming Clean

That last song???? Otherwise fab

Really solid album overall. It's generally pretty simple musically and the lyrics are relatable in an "I'm 22 and hanging out" way, but I think that's part of what makes it work. It's upbeat and fun and has good vibes. A few standout songs ("Basket Case" and "When I Come Around") pull it together. It's not the most interesting thing I've every listened to, but it's really solid and launched Green Day to incredible success. 7 months after this was released was the infamous Green Day Boston riot, so clearly some other people got into this too. Favorite song: Basket Case Other: Chump, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, She, When I Come Around, F.O.D. 11/26/23

Fantastic mid-90s garage pop punk album. It's only gotten better with age.

It's green day!

Just a fun, high-energy ride. It gets derided sometimes as "not real punk" which is sort of true, but that doesn't detract from the excellence of this album. There are a handful of duds (All by Myself, anyone?) on this album that prevent it from being 5 stars but it is still worth repeated listens.

Green Day is just so good man
