Reviews (page 9 of 14)

Honestly I’ve never listened all the way through. I thought it was better than I expected! Loved some of the silliness mixed with deeper messaging

It’s good! I like American Idiot more, but this album is incredibly solid, especially with singles like Basket Case attached to it.

Would listen again x

Classic, great, very very good rock

kunno nostalgia pärinät! Ei ehkä kokonaisuutena mitekää erityinen mut biisit lähinnä oli tosi lähellä sydäntä <3 kovin varma valinta jos haluu sellasta green day punkki jytinää

ganska kul

Solid pop punk album. Not quite a 5 but it's very close, has a few songs to skip on it. Will I listen to again: 80%

It was good. Green Day is green day.

I think when people say a band has a "particular sound", it means all their songs sound the same. This album sounds like Green Day.

Ok. Fifth album by a male artist in a row since I’ve been counting. I’ll review Dookie, but I’m also going to review album by a female artist that’s not on this list (the album that is. The artist may or may not have a different album on this list). That album will be Where Did Our Love Go by the Supremes. For my review of Dookie, this album is tremendous pop punk. An iconic 90s album that also inspired some of my favorite artists in the 2000s (no matter how much 2000s pop punk artists like MCR, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, and Panic are disparaged, I still love it. I love Olivia Rodrigo’s revival of pop punk today. Those artists also owe a great deal to Green Day). The transition between Chump and Longview is amazing. I think though that having heard songs from this album and Green Day for years, it doesn’t really come off that fresh to me (and the songs that stand out the most of the popular ones like Longview and Basket Case). I don’t know if I’d play this who album unless I was in a really specific mood to do so. I’ll give Dookie a 4. Where Did Our Love Go is of course another certified classic with iconic hits like the title track and “Baby Love”. Of the songs I hadn’t previously heard, I really loved “When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes.” But every song on this album is perfect 1960s pop. I know the Supremes didn’t have Motown’s first number one song, but they did more to popularize the Motown sound than any other artist on the label. And in the 1960s, no other artist (besides the Beatles) rivaled their chart success. This album obviously deserves to be on this list for popularizing the Motown sound, the dominant sound of R&B and probably the most imitated sound in music during the 1960s. The charts of course aren’t everything, but the influence and legacy of the Supremes on musical landscape can’t be understated. They transcended the “race music” that was commonly applied to Black artists before the 1960s and allowed Black artists to finally get credit for their contributions to music (instead of having tepid covers of their songs by White artists gain more popularity like in the ‘50s). They’re the most commercially successful vocal group of all time. They also inspired my favorite musical film Dreamgirls. Every girl group (Destiny’s Child, TLC, Spice Girls, etc.) AND boy group (Boyz II Men, *NSYNC, One Direction, etc.) that came after them is forever indebted to them. Where Did Our Love Go is a 5.

Green day is cool. Very same-ish though at times.

The hits go really hard here, amazing how I'm not tired of these songs after 30 years

I really liked this actually! My favorites were probably "Basket Case", "FOD", and "In the End". I actually do see the appeal good album! Oh and i REALLY LIKED "Welcome to Paradise"

The blueprint of punk rock albums to come, Dookie slaps hard. When everything erupts on 'Longview' you know that you're in for a treat. The rhythm parts by misters Dirnt and Cool are extraordinary, but the singing should probably be left to Armstrong as the hidden jerk-off track 'All By Myself' showcases.

90’s Green Day was such a power trio. Dookie truly shaped an entire genre almost entirely by itself. A true piece of music history. The rhythm section is incredibly tight and Armstrong’s vocals are as iconic and youthful as ever. Some of the shorter and faster closing songs don’t quite live up to songs like “Longview” and “Basket Case” but Dookie is just one of those nostalgic albums you simply are unable to not enjoy.

Still a banger!

Favorite Tracks: Burnout, Having a Blast, Chump, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Pulling Teeth, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around, F.O.D.,

Dookie >= Nookie

"Am I just paranoid or am I just stoned" Greenday's best album

Great energy, really captures a moment in time for me

Love this album. Simple and effective, captures a mood.

The transition to Longview is flawless, but it's sitting at a four for me.

Had a ton of hits on this album. Lots of songs sound the same and not many hidden gems outside the hits.

It's really a classic. 90s bring back of punk. 4 legit classic 90s songs.

I respect Green Day but just not my cup of tea.

I bought it in 1994. I still listened to it. Alternative isn't my thing anymore, but it is still good.

playful pop punk summer goodness. what more do you want?

It was quite enjoyable. Some good musicianship, particularly in instrumental parts. The general style during typical verse/chorus type parts is not tremendously satisfying to me, but like I said, fairly enjoyable overall and I'm glad I listened as I had only previously heard Basketcase.

Burnout: Too relatable, even now haha Having a Blast: Bit forgettable on first listen, might benefit from more replays. Chump: I like this one more, although I wish I could understand the vocals more - nice bass line Longview: I like the fade-in from the previous track, it's got a lot of energy for a song about feeling unmotivated lmao Welcome to Paradise: The first song I recognise, it's a third of the way in, I dunno why that matters but it does? haha solid track, but I already knew that. Pulling Teeth: Not a love song lmao I don't mind the change of pace, it's a bit slower. Basket Case: This song is in my regular playlist; I like how dynamic it is - in the context of the album it really heightens the themes of dissatisfaction and general feeling of ennui. She: This song is... okay? It's fine, it sounds like the rest of the album, but not in a bad way, just more of the same, which is good XD Sassafras Roots: This is another kinda forgettable song for me on first listen, it's not bad, I just don't find it that interesting. When I Come Around: Another song I knew previously, I always liked the groove of this song. Coming Clean: As a bisexual person myself, can relate haha Emenius Sleepus: This song slams in so quick after the last one geez haha I don't have a lot to say about it though haha In the End: Another shorter, fast-paced song - I like the tempo, it's a nice bouncy beat. F.O.D.: Oh HI music after acoustic start - Such an angry song, but not in a super aggressive way? ahaha All by Myself: Okay Green Day, okay hahaha thank you for the second song about masturbating.

I thought this was very fun to listen to in an 90s nostalgia kind of way. I recognized about half the songs, but honestly it all blended into one long tune. The punk-pop lyrics are sprinkled with lines that make me smile. Things like “Sometimes I give myself the creeps”.

This is a tough one for me to rate. I've always been a bit put off by Green Day's whole vibe / image / overall sound and would never consider myself a fan. With that said, I do have to admit that this is a great pop-punk album and was so significant and influential in the 90s and beyond. I can only stand so much of Billie Joe Armstrong's voice and found it a bit grating by the end, but it's a strong album for sure.

Do you have the whine, to listen to me time?

This CD had a long residency in my sony Walkman years back. Between the album art work and the solidness of the entire album these tracks still appeal to my slacker sensibilities.

Classic pop punk album. Loved their greatest hits as a teenager. Good to listen back to this, Longview, burnout, when I come around, all good songs. Quick album too.

Really good stuff, a great number of classics from the Green Day. Cool messages about apathy and hatred for being apathetic.

4/5 fun teenage vibes

Quite a few great songs

All the songs were good, but they also kind of sounded the same. Good simple album

I was excited to listen to this album all the way through since I'd only heard the two really popular songs off of it (which are definitely the top two songs) and it was mostly a good listen. The ending skit was a wet fart of an ending and some of the songs in the second half dragged a bit but the energy of the first half in tracks like longview and burnout more than makes up for it.

Classic album. Loved it as a kid. It's VERY sonically similar, but I guess that's because it was probably recorded in a single session or something. Some of the tracksFavourite tracks: Longview, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around.

A rock sound so solid that it’s lasted 30 years.

I feel kinda uneasy about enjoying this, for me the whole "pop punk" thing feels really hypocritical and vapid. At the same time though, I'd much rather put this on than some of the old punk classics on the list.

Green Day has bangers?? Many such cases

First 75% of this is pretty untouchable, with some of the absolute best songs of the 90s. But the last chunk is pretty mediocre, with none of the iconic song writing or performances that are constant from the start of the album through “When I Come Around”. Still, really good overall.

Very entertaing album from the pop punk trio. Was quite refreshing, to hear a band daring to make punk sound happy and without politics etc. Liked it back in the day,, still like it now. It gets a 4 for me!

Bring back the 90s!

Good, fast album. The hits are great. Very fun

1. Basket case 2. When I come around 3. Pulling teeth

Hresst og skemmtilegt. Alltaf hægt að grípa í.

An iconic part of my childhood, however, Green Day doesn't do it for me.

Never realized how different their sound is from most of what was coming out in the early 90s. The upbeat energy kept me hyped up. Also never realized how much his "accent" sounds kinda british? Fun punky rock

One of the first CDs I bought that wasn’t a film score or comedy album, I’d almost give it five stars for the bass line in Longview alone. Only real issue is, like a lot of pop-punk, the songs start to blend together after a bit.

Right off the first listen each song is very catchy and sounds like any of them could be a smash radio song. Each song has u tapping ur foot to the great drums and Armstrongs lead vocals which are hypnotizing in a way that keeps you engaged. The way he sings sound’s aesthetically pleasing. When you hear him singing and waiting for him on the next line you want him to sing in a certain way that would fit perfectly and he does that. The drums on the album are fantastic and so frantic but it doesn’t sound out of touch with the guitar and vocals. Almost like all of the songs sound the same but not really because it’s not becoming boring or unlistenable or even asking yourself if you’re on a different song. My favorite song is welcome to paradise and my least favorite is all by myself.

Pretty good

I did not appreciate this enough at 13, but damn if it isn't a solid album.

Not listened to this for years, really enjoyed hearing it through again

Do you have the time to listen to me whine... Good, fun, punkish now cartoonish and mainstream. It's a great little nostalgic guilty pleasure listen.

It was a good ride

i’ve never really listened to green day. i didn’t think i’d be a big fan of them. but i listened to this and i’m really glad i did. i really enjoyed this album !!! 😁

This is pure energy. One of my favorites

of all of Green Day’s music, this is the goods

Not my usual genre and I don’t think I would feel the same way had I not listened to this album many times as a child but as it is I really enjoy 4/5

made me smile on the train. so fun. stuck between a 4 and a 5 - i love it but there are certainly skips.

Not bad, but not their best album

The whole thing is a lot of fun. I would totally listen to this again

I try to listen to albums on here with fresh ears, but sometimes that proves impossible, like now. From hearing this hundreds of times in my teens to hearing it played live in full in 2013, even after many years away I can still recite every line before it comes up. I'd actually love to know how it would sound from an impartial perspective. 15-year old me would award it an easy 5*, but listening back there's just too many non-bangers that I think it would be unfair on some of the album I've ranked 4*. A few of the tracks towards the end are skippable but thankfully short. I've always disliked the placement of She though, it breaks up such a great run of songs before and after it right when you feel like the album should be hitting its peak. First four tracks amongs the best openers in pop punk though.

I always took Green Day as a bit of a cynical project. 90s American Post Punk, right? How could that be a sincere take on the genre? I sort of dismissed it out of hand. And shame on me for doing so. This album is cohesive, the production is fantastic. The musicianship is really good. But this is why I'm on this website. I'm opening myself up to changing the opinions of my younger self. Here we are.

A lot of nostalgia on this album and some great tunes!

12 yr old me loves this

Dumb pop punk fun. Full of hooks and memorable choruses.

This is a tight record, each musician is at the peak of their instrument's power. The songs are short and snappy, sometimes silly, yes, but there's some really poignant songs in there too if you listen. 'Welcome to Paradise', 'She', 'Sassafras Roots', 'When I Come Around', some excellent fucking songs right there. In fact, the second half of the record is fire! 4 / 5 stars.

It's not even my favorite Green Day album, but it's a classic. Green Day started a new wave of Punk amid America's slide into Grunge. It's short, it's loud, and it definitely gets the point across. It's not particularly musically complex, but its influence and emotion definitely leave this as a good contender.

Bello bello.

Great album and defining of the 90s

This album feels very 2003, which I guess makes it ahead of its time since it turns out it came out in 1994! It’s a cool album, not amazing though I can see how it clearly influenced the next decade of rock music. Fav tracks: Basket Case, When I Come Around

I would call it pop punk not punk. But a pretty good album regardless. Better than any of their future output.

Wonderful pop punk. Enjoyed the short quick nugget approach of these songs. Interesting that all the big hits are the only ones over 3 minutes (when i come around is the 4th hit at 2:58). Still lots to enjoy here.

Album 2 6/7/23 This one I've heard MANY times. Let's give it another spin! What can I say? Peak pop punk. The songs rip, they're simple yet effective, and they never overstay their welcome. Green day really understood their lane here and didn't take themselves too seriously, but made a damn great collection of tracks. Apathy has never sounded so full of vigor. Also, it includes the all-time best song about masturbation, so points for that.

I don't think I've listened to this in full in about 25 years, but it's just as I remembered it. Solid song writing, and very much captures the polished SoCal Punk sound of the 90's.

listened

Derde album van Green Day.

🤟🏽🤟🏽

Maybe the ultimate pop punk album, at least for my generation. I love how nervous that album is, it sweats the typical teenage energy with its relentless flow of songs. They're also great musicians, we rarely talk about that but they're a really tight unit, Tre and Mike's rythmic section is awesome

Ah yes, a long forgotten time when punk rock was still good.

Doesn’t hold up, given how much I used to thrash it. But clear that what makes this band great is all three are pulling their weight musician wise.

Call it punk, call it pop, call it what you want. This album put Green Day on the map with banger after banger. 15 songs in 38 minutes?! For some reason anytime I listen to this album I want to start playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater and listen to this genre of music all day long. Album art 11/10

Another album that is absolutely riddle with bangers. The trifecta of Lynard Skynard, Little Richard, and Green Day is complete. Seriously, this is one of the best pop-punk albums/bands ever. I give this genre a lot of grief because it's so copy and paste; but these guys started it all, and only did it with a slightly whiny voice. Longview has such an iconic baseline. Feels like another 3.5 star album, but I'm giving it the Nostalgia Bump to 4 stars.

I always forget how old this album is. So many great songs from my childhood that I still listen to this day. It's tough to rate fairly for me because I have listened to this album so many times so I am not sure if it's just my nostalgia but I absolutely love this album This was my favorite type of music growing up with the banging snares and powerful guitar riffs Billie Joe is an awesome alternative singer and frontman Shout-out to the album cover also

Flashback to my teen tears

standout track- basket case

Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate it for what it is.

One of the most iconic albums of the 90's and for good reason, them and The Offspring brought Punk back to the mainstream, though I'm not as emotionally invested in Greenday It's still a cracker of an album and can't be denied a place as top album.

I was an Offspring kid around this whole era, and I never got to listening to much of Green Day or this classic album, despite the fact that Basket Case was on constant rotation on MTV2 / Kerrang TV. I really enjoyed this. It's really upbeat and toe-tappingly good all the way through. I really like Welcome to Paradise - this was one of the songs I did know, but it's nice to re-connect with it. Plenty of other good songs in here including, of course, Basket Case. Re-listening now on headphones I noticed lots of new little details like the additional harmonies that work really well. Overall a well made, fun, good-time album. Music aside, this is also an awesome album cover.

Punk in the 90's looked a lot different from what it did in the 70's or even the 80's. If you weren't slotted into one of the many hardcore subgenres, you were probably leaning more pop punk. Along with the likes of Blink-182 and The Offspring, Green Day would find a fair amount of success with pop punk. It was different from the kind of pop punk formed in the 70's, as skate punk and melodic hardcore would influence the genre, leading to the cultivated sound that Green Day has on Dookie. More than being a defining pop punk record, it's a defining gen x album: it's sarcastic, lazy, and rebellious in the most surface way possible. Not only is it a fun pop punk record, but it's also sort of progressive? More specifically, it's like they put more thought into the songwriting than the average punk band had put into any song. It's tight.

A fun album with some catchy songs. The drums are a particular highlight. 3.75/5

I was not much of a fan of the singles that came out from this album at the time, and so I didn't consider myself much of a Green Day fan. After I had kind of written them off, I was impressed by later work of theirs, but never got too much into them. Spending some quality time with this today, however, my appreciation grew and I connected more with their talent. It’s some solid punky rock and a great breakthrough album.

Tämä levy ja The Offspringin Smash olivat ensimmäiset levyt, jousta skidinä kiinnostuin, joten taidan olla vähän jäävi arvioimaan tätä mitenkään. Ennen tätä oli pimeys.

when i come arooooound

Most teenage angst driven albums tend to burn out pretty quick, on top of being shallow and cliched. Not dookie though. Besides stuffing this thing with bangers, without overextending the runtime, GD manage to pull off a rare triumph of a fun energetic and listenable pop-punk album! 4 slices of pizza, for the reminding me of my teenage years. 🍕🍕🍕🍕

Brilliant, 4.5

A classic, nothing else left to say about this really! But I will anyway… Punky, poppy, stoner rock n roll! Some huge tunes on this that even the most alien to Green Day will know of. Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise and When I Come Around are all certified classics and I defy anyone to not love them. Album is a masterpiece.

Little Clash Junior is right cunnin'.

-banger album from a banger band

Not my favourite Green Day but still great

Last few songs are fairly filler, but overall a really solid album. So many hits on here.

Gotta love some angst

It's crazy to realize how many great memorable songs are on this album. I owned this album when it came out, but I didn't pay it so much... maybe because it was playing everywhere else. It's a little too pop for my taste, but with this re-listen I still can't deny how good it is. I don't want to hear it, but I get it.

you really have to hand it to them. green day was one of the most important rock bands for a really long time, and dookie was one of the reasons why. i used to be absolutely obsessed with this band, i really did. i don't listen to them as much anymore, but i respect their craft, especially this early stuff. feels more challenging, but isn't that always how it goes with bands that make it big? it was good to listen to sounds from a bygone era from a band that's cleaned up their act a lot

Good punk album that has all the major early Green Day hits. Good studio debut.

This felt like a Green Day Greatest Hits. All the tracks are so familiar. It's a great punk pop album. The tracks are the right duration to capture your attention before it's time to move on. It's not a revolutionary album like London Calling, etc. But Green Day deserve credit for going against the fashion at the time. Making a pop punk record in 1993 wasn't a smart move. This still stands up.

Bangin choons. Took me back to the 6th Form dayroom. #sonicsaysdontnonce

Classic stuff

This was a totally groundbreaking album. Perhaps that's why, I went to see them play it in 1994 at Lollapalooza in Phoenix. It was a crazy day, particularly when everyone bumrushed the stage for the Breeders. I remember ending up near the bottom of a massive pile of people and I was so grateful that I locked my elbows as I hit the concrete. When Green Day came on, I was looking forward to it, but I have to admit that when he dropped trow and exposed himself to the crowd and started spitting on the front rows, my enthusiasm was dampened. Still, a great album and a real departure. Longview is a major song, as is Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case (my fav), She, and obviously When I Come Around. Lots and lots of strong songs and the lesser songs are very listenable.

Good stuff, replicated relentlessly throughout the album.

Gave it a more thorough listen, the lyrics are better than I’ve noticed before and the non-single songs are good, too.

En ole oikeastaan ikinä kummemin fanittanut tätä bändiä, mutta oikein toimivaa settiä ja viihdyttävä levy. Pari kertaa pyöri läpi ja kuuntelen kyllä jatkossakin.

Hyvin on kestäny aikaa. Edelleen kova ja kompakti alusta loppuun

Very very good

- Basket Case! Longview When I Come Around!

Before it all went wrong

I forgot how many pop chart hits this album produced. I wasn't a fan when it came out, and still not a fan of Green Day, but I get their impact and Dookie is definitely a must-listen. 3.5/5.

Super fun!!! Nostalgic and great to listen to :) it not only pulls me back to teenage years every time I listen to a GD album, it also amazes me how their music stands the test of time. The skill is evident, the words are often relatable, the passion shines through no matter how many years have passed it doesn't feel dated because the quality of sound and instrumentation is just so good (to me anyway with my limited experience and knowledge). Excellent music to get hyped and motivated to get loads of work done haha. Pulling Teeth and Basket Case obviously highlights I love F.O.D. too.

Yeah classic. Love it.

Great album by one of the best 👍🏻

Classic genre influencing

Classic pop-punk-rock Green Day jams, a bit cheesy/repetitive at times but you can't deny this thing BANGS. Think the ending tracks weren't as strong as the rest of the album but awesome listen throughout.

Green Day’s best album. Jesus of suburbia has some major hits but that was after they were established. This bum out greenday on the map and a lot of talk was had about them. So many good songs on this album too. Now people call them pop punk but I don’t think at anytime they felt poppy. It’s not your typical 70s/80s punk but it’s 90s punk that went mainstream. Well made music will go mainstream. Green Day made punk likeable which is against what most punk artists believe but I like it and so do many others. Solid stuff. 8.2/10

More melodic and musically varied than I remember and it’s no wonder the album transcended the punk label and got mainstream pickup

Great album. When I come around is one of those that has always drawn my attention. It’s a “feel good” song for me.

Enjoyable, don't know if it's really my sort of thing

one of my favourite us pop punk albums, this is peak green day, love the guitar work, drumming and vibe 7.5/10 Best songs Burnout Longview Welcome to paradise

Classic nostalgia catchy songs

Classic for this era and part of my childhood

Punk rock

4* purely out of nostalgia

Listening to the album was a nostalgic trip to the '90s punk rock.

I was not a big fan of Green Day, but then saw them in concert with all my family. Concert was loud, non-stop energy and good entertainment. Much like this album. Did not realize how many hits are on this album. Enjoyed all the radio hits, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket case, She and When I come around, but my personal favorite is FOD. Just loved the lyrics and thought of a quite a few people I have wanted to say this to. Some I have have. Good times, man. Good times. Good album all the way through. You have really search for a reason not to enjoy. Surprise song that makes me smile - All by Myself. Good solid 4

It's Green Day, and I'm a pop punk fan. Self explanatory.

I enjoyed this more than when I was in middle school.

Crazy cool album but only cause I have listened 8/15 of the tracks

green day good! i like it.

Undeniably a good album. There are just too many hit songs, it’s hard to believe given how short it is! I love the fun childish energy of the Band all over this… it feels like they’re really leaning in to their strengths. Unfortunately for me, I grew up after Green Day had already come and gone through the halls of my high school… really, in Green Day’s wake. That unfortunately means that I remember one or two kids who seemed to base their entire whiny personality on Billy Joe Armstrong’s most tortured vocals. So it’s no fault of the band that I have this strong association between their lead singer and some bullies from 2006, but there ya go. 4 stars, without a doubt a classic. Thank you Billy Joel Armstrong for inviting the whole front section onto the stage at the Tweeter Center in 2009, sorry Billy Joe Armstrong if I offended you in an unflattering connection to our high school “punk scene.”

Memories of the year I became a father! 1994! 4.5 "And I smell like shit"

If there was a Spotify wrapped for your whole life, this would def be top 3 most listened to. Just over and over and over and over in my CD player during the summer in middle school at Nina's house. 4.5 for sweet nostalgia

Album nije dookie

Fantastic album, tight sound and all great tracks. Captures the sound of the 90s. 4/5

Green Day's major label debut, Dookie, in my opinion was one of their best records. The band was already "well seasoned" with several releases on the indie label, Lookout Records and they were able to convey the energy and catchy pop-punk of their earlier albums to a larger audience. The release of this record in many ways was just as important as, Nirvana's, Nevermind, bringing alt rock- punk/grunge to mainstream audiences that so desperately needed better music.

Great little slice of punk-pop

It's a fun pop punk album. The only real masterpiece i think is basket case, but this is really good as far as pop punk goes.

The rarity within 1001 Albums You Must Hear… in that it is an album I’m already quite familiar with. Nothing new to be discovered for me today, but it definitely makes for an enjoyable listen and an easy review. Songs I already knew: all of them Favourites: Basket Case, She Well what can I say? It’s the album that shot Green Day to stardom. There is a definite charm to the simplicity of this album - drums, bass, layered guitar, vocals, done. This is where I feel Green Day have become less interesting with subsequent albums (aside from American Idiot which was incredible), but then again they’d be considered boring if nothing changed. Regardless, this is a punk rock album with plenty of punch, but without the hard-to-listen vocals of the more hardcore punk bands out there. This is likely why they’ve been considered to be more pop-punk, but whatever you want to call it, it’s a great album and an easy recommendation.

I've always liked these guys despite what everyone else says and it makes me happy. Not the most inventive, varied or original but they're good at what they set out to be and that's ok by me.

Great fun. This album sounds exactly like how it felt to be an angsty teenager in the 90s. "Basket Case" and "Welcome to Paradise" are bangers, of course.

Great nouveau punk album. 4 stars

Worth it for basket case and when i come around alone

Surprise: Basket Case is in the middle of the album; it sounds so much like an intro. Not too many surprises afterward (from the 11 songs I didn’t know) but the limited musical palette means some real catchy hooks come in loud & clear.

Green Day are another band the NME made me hate. This is great, raw and aggressive, and I feel sad that I missed out.

Classic, not my favorite.

Solid punk pop

I’m not a big Green Day fan but this was actually a solid album

This brings back all sorts of memories… and for that reason alone this is getting an artificially inflated star rating!

Green Day the group that introduced faux punk music to everyone. Many of the songs were familiar and definitely overplayed in all aspects movies, TV, radio, etc. As I have stated before I am not a big Green Day fan. I am not sure I had actually listened to the entire album previously. Overall it is alright. It is better than American Idiot. It is better than a 3 but not really a 4. I will round up.

Great fun listen! Sick cover art and timeless classic!

Very good, but I prefer Blink-182

4.5 stars. Surprisingly timeless. Birth of pop punk. Billie Joe Armstrong's moody vocals, Dirnt's memorable bassline make this a great listen. Nothing special instrumentally but it works well for what it does. Standouts are "Basket Case", "Longview", "Welcome to Paradise", "When I Come Around".

First time hearing it. Hit machine. Only criticism is that there’s a formula they never ever stray from, so feels repetitive. They even say something to that effect in FOB: “Let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before.”

Enjoyable

Love this! Although more for notorious reasons...it was 1 of the first 2 CDs I received as a Christmas gift from mom & dad in high school. They gifted me and Brianne a disc-man and 2 CDs (this one and Blink 182) that we were to share. For some reason, I loved the song Basketcase haha. Brings back good memories from that time.

“Nd’eurotic to the bone, no doubt about it”… And suddenly I’m 14 again. One of the first albums that my best friend owned on CD. I was never really a huge punk fan, but it definitely brings back memories of being in middle school. This album is the epitome of teenagers in the 90’s. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could.

Great entertaining album with fast paced songs and a good runtime. Definitely on the good side of the 4 star rating but lacking just one or two more big songs that stick out from the masses to get a 5 star rating from me

classic

15 songs 38:22

This album stood up better than it had any right to

What a great punk album that still holds up so well today!

Sharp and to the point like a dead-eyeing rook. Many good songs and probably their peak before sliding into mediocrity. American Idiot wasn’t bad either. The seamless transition into Long View was marvelous

Green Day's third album and major label debut is probably the most fundamental pop/punk album. The album is tight, short, and retains its energy to the last rather tongue in cheek track. Green Day is often the subject of debate when it comes to true punk, but that is not really the point here. This band has an incredible sense of melody and their influences are too broad to pigeonhole them into either pop or punk. 'dookie' takes us through themes of boredom and loneliness that typify the 90s suburban experience. Green Day seeks to break out of that existence, as best seen in 'Welcome to Paradise,' a song about the band finding refuge in the gritty warehouse art/music scene in Oakland, a scene that has largely been priced out with the rise of the tech industry. The music itself draws from hardcore, garage rock, surf rock, and pop to create something that is instantly identifiable as Green Day.

Surprisingly fun! Never listened to Green Day before and thoroughly enjoyed it

Green Day is one of those bands that reminds me too much of my youth and my liking of them will always be judged through that. I remember American Idiot coming out in high school and I just never dug the pop-punk sound that was dominant at the time. Even though this album is from a decade earlier, it still reminds me of that pop punk sound from my youth that I, even after all this years, still have issues with. Still this isn't offensive and it is perfectly fine music with a few bangers here and there so I can't punish it too much. Plus it's short and doesn't overstay its welcome so that's always a huge plus for me.

Birth of pop-punk? Pretty familiar with this album since I'm a 90s kid. Already had Basket Case and Welcome To Paradise added in Spotify. Another record I enjoy but maybe not quite enough to go out and buy it to add to the collection. I think the album works because of how short all the songs are because they are so similar. If the songs were any longer it would start to get a little tedious, but it's super easy to listen to the album from front to back.

Dookie is Green Day's third album and it's their best-selling one. The album brought punk rock to main stream popularity, won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 1995, and was certified diamond in the US for over 10 million units sold in 1999. This album has been described as one of the best punk rock albums of all time; many have tried to emulate this album, but they don't quite cut it. Almost every song on this album is great by itself, but when all together they're a masterpiece wrapped up in a jewel case. This is the first time I have listened to this album in its entirety and now I feel like I was missing something all these years. I highly recommend this album to everyone - not just punk rock lovers.

Pop punk classic still holds up

PeterSprinkler loves Dookie

The best 90s album from Green Day. It is lined with hits from longview to basketcase and welcome to paradise to when I come around. The songs in between the hits are mostly just as good, filled with 90s alt rock punk vibes and lyrics about drug use and feeling like a deadbeat. "Pullin teeth" is the one track that seems out of place. The guitar tones and vocal melody are straight out of a 50s rock song which was probably the idea but it seems strange in contrast to the rest of the album. The last song "All by myself" is a silly short song that encapsulates the feelings of joking around with your friends while struggling with going through early adulthood.

Loved basket case of course. Nice early punk music.

étonnamment j'ai passé un plutôt bon moment à écouter leurs morceaux dynamiques et concis

I obsessed over this album back when, eventually wearing out the cassette tape. But it's been a while since I listened to it through. Still a collection of well-crafted, poppy punk songs. It is what it is.

Well, that was fun!

This album is iconic. I remember how big it was when it first came out.

Maybe nostalgia, maybe the singles. Got some kicks

Remembered this a lot more than I thought I would. Compared to what Green Day end up as this is still really enjoyable. Deep as a puddle.

Short, sharp, and to the point. Good stuff.

Bem legal

Green day write brilliant songs for teenagers. But when you grow up they just feel like a nostalgic band. I had international super hits when I was younger so familiar with a lot of these songs. It is one of the best pop punk albums. But not music I’d listen to now Iv grown up.

At the time this album came out, I had zero interest in Green Day, and have mostly managed avoided listening to them too much all these years. Looking at it now, I don't remember what my aversion to the band was. This is an excellent album and it kind of suits my mood today. The songs are short and sweet, punchy but melodic, polished but with a bit of an edge. The band's pop sensibility is second to none and I'm impressed how many hits came out of this album. I generally don't dig Billy Joe Armstrong's vocal style, but he's able to toe a line between insouciant and irritating, something most of Armstrong's peers can't do. Okay Green Day, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong. Good show. Fave Songs: When I Come Around, Pulling Teeth, She, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, In the End, Coming Clean

Listened to on 4/19/22 4.5/5 Favorite song: Basket case, She I love Green Day and it’s 90s nostalgia - this album did not disappoint and i bopped all day

Couple of classic pop punk songs but the rest of the album sounds pretty similar to each other

excellent alternative album with lots of hits

Pretty solid, not a lot of variety. 8/10

Já conhecia, muito bom, fazia tempo que não ouvia. Bom revisitar. Melhores músicas: When I Come around, She e Basket Case.

Two great things came out in 1994: me and Dookie

Great album from the 90’s punk classics

Terrific Green Day.

Awesome album with great tunes.

Rating: 8/10 Bests songs: Love galore, Doves in the wind, Drew Barrymore, Prom, The weekend, Normal girl, Pretty little birds

A very lively punk/pop/thrash album, it does have it's moments and loads of energy. On the downside, it does get a bit samey - it could probably go with a track or two that experiment a bit. There's a few classics here (Basket Case, Long View and Welcome To Paradise) that are instantly recognizable. Music is probably a 7/10 but I do like the LP cover art so I've bumped it up to a 4 star.

Jaa, classic. Grijs gedraaid!

Solid. I suspect they did pick the best tracks for single release (and what fine singles, too), and it tapers off a bit in the last third or so, but if you're going to do pop-punk this is how to do it. Not surprising it was such a hit.

a fun romp! removed one star for too much of a masturbation theme

Super influential, gotta love it for what it gave us.

Super fun. Grew up on it so nostalgia definitely plays a part. I do love the production. All of the instrument sounds and tones are incredible. Everything else is just…. You already know. You al. ready. know. Put this on any day.

So much nostalgia

A fantastic album, the best from Green Day for me. Great songs, great performances and some really good singing. An almost 5...4.5 🌟

Heartwarming because this album was my contemporary - but generally still holds as a petulant 90s suburban Ramones album - might be hard to translate across generations.

Great album, full of bangers. Not Green Day's best though, I think!

It's really hard for me to be objective about this one, the nostalgia boost is so high. It's pretty one note but it's a note I still like 20 years after first hearing it and stacked my 256mb MP3 player with this, Warning and Nirvana.

Early pop-punk album I can actually stand? Why yes it is.

Not that shit

Do you have the time to listen to me whine? Okay maybe not for this album. Banger

Lots of bangers, including 90s classics. These songs just have such a fun every to them most of the time. Impossible not the tap for foot or nod your head.

Nostalgic

I was only familiar with the International Superhits, and they remain the only songs I will continue to listen to on their own. In their defense, it's 5/15 tracks, which is a pretty sizeable portion. Solid songs, the rest just don't grab me in 2022.

I missed this when it came out so it was great to see what all the fuss was about.

Pop punk excellence, their first step toward being a stadium band.

Always a classic!

Solid. A bit overplayed, but good punk renaissance.

Billie Joe Armstrong's romantic lyricism, Mike Dirnt's infectious bass lines, and Tre Cool's eccentric drumming combine to amplify the catchy, distortion-heavy pop-punk to greatness. A solid record that helped establish the sound of popular rock for years to come. BEST TRACKS: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, She, When I Come Around WORST TRACKS: Emenius Sleepus

A fantastic example of why pop punk is, in fact, one of the best genres of all time. 15 (well, 14) songs that all have bulletproof hooks combined with the angst of punk rock. Together it becomes a super tight collection of no skips, except "All By Myself". Favorite Tracks: "Burnout", "Having A Blast", "Chump", "Longview", "Welcome To Paradise", "Basket Case", "She", "When I Come Around", "Coming Clean", "In The End"

While this is not my favorite Green Day album, it's easy to see the influence that it had on pop punk music that came after it. It's very catchy. I'm not a big fan of all the immature lyrics, but they definitely fit the theme of the album. Favorites: Basket Case, She, When I Come Around

Super fun!

27 years ago? Some amazing classics on here. Yes. This is now a classic album. It can be played on Oldies stations.

Very good album, up my alley in terms of more modern rock music that I enjoy. Not every song was memorable but it did a lot with the consistency it had.

I already know this album to death. I had it copied on tape back when it was released. What a ride it is. Lots of fun and energy.

I remember this album being super divisive with my friends that were into punk. They kept calling these guys sellouts, which I just couldn't wrap my brain around. How could a band be sellouts on their debut album, when they'd only just begun. Wouldn't that just mean that they are what they are? And why give a shit anyhow - the album was great! The album is extremely tight. Billie and Mike's guitars are locked in an intricate and electrified swing dance, each locked to the same beat, but each with their own lightning fast and elaborate roles to play. Tre's drums are pounding, precise and raucously joyous. I think these descriptions stand out the most in the songs "Burnout", "Welcome to Paradise" and "In the End". Beyond the intrumentals though, the lyrics are actually about something, many speaking to the disillusioned and angst-filled vibe of the times. That and masturbation. For me, this album ushered in my punk-rock awakening. It intrigued me and got me interested enough to want to delve into the genre further. And it's that bridging role that this album played for so many, that I think drew ridicule and acclaim alike. Some wanted to keep their punk secret safe and unsullied, whereas others wanted to see what they'd been missing. I for one, was glad for it.

Good album, I enjoyed

Green Day casi siempre ha estado entre mi repertorio, me encanta escuchar algunas de estas canciones mientras hago cualquier otra cosa. Amo

Grew up with this one. As a 14-year-old I thought it was amazing. Not so much now although it will always have great nostalgia value.

Bonjour à tous, malgré les rumeurs colportées par mon adversaire robtinaturnière, je suis toujours bel et bien en vie. Je reviendrai très bientôt vers vous pour vous expliquer les raisons ayant conduites à mon absence.

Could be the nostaligic factor, but I like this album.

- The transition into Longview is fantastic. Standout track of the album. - Reminds me of middle school, but I didn't listen to Green Day too much back then. - Basket Case is still a solid anthem. - All by myself is still fun

The album that made me want to play guitar.

Stand out tracks: When I come around/Basket case/Longview. Rest is very much the same

Very good. Close to being one of the greats 4.5

Great album. A lot of throw backs

I have listened to this one. Good album. Great early Green Day.

Rock. Jag har aldrig tidigare hört ett album som lyckas verkställa ett så rockigt som detta. Det är för att de lyckades skapa exakt den känsla och upplevelse som jag söker i rock. Det vill säga iver och engagemang. Speciellt låten Welcome to Paradise fångade mitt intresse.

Brilliant fun album.

For what it is - it’s at the top of its game - I always liked this album and listened to it a lot when it was released - it’s ironic that for this album is their high point - Longview is a fucking banger and there’s a few other proper tunes on this too

Happy punk

I remember this one. My (younger) brother had a copy. I probably was a bit too much of a music snob to admit that I liked it but even I can still sing along with the hits from it now. Great fun. Played it twice just because. 7/10

Simple but amazingly catchy melodies

The album that launched a thousand bands. Being a big pop punk guy, it's weird I never sat down with this, but the radio did kill a few of these. Still a tight effort. Favorite tracks: "Longview", "Pulling Teeth", "She"

All the hits that made green day, a little one note but for 38min very enjoyable

very solid album across the board, but also highly nostalgic. For this genre of rock, I'd consider this a high water mark

Probably the best Green Day album, and I almost gave this a 5 for the nostalgia effect.

Think this was so refreshing in 1994 as the world was getting a little sick of grunge and Nirvana by numbers landfill bands. "Basket case" and "when I come around" are punk rock classics. Stone cold classics! "Welcome to Paradise" and "Longview" are also great but not sure some of the rest of the songs reach the heights of those 4, but they are very much enjoyable none the less. Can we have this version of Green day back please? 4/5

For better or worse, can't listen to Basket Case anymore without thinking of that fucking vocoded Steamed Hams video. Awesome album, discovered some tracks I didn't really know before. Apparently hardcore fans disliked this new, cleaner sound when this album came out, but guys, it's still named Dookie and about mass murder and depression and jacking off. Already Saved: Basket Case; When I Come Around Saved After Listening: Burnout, Longview, Welcome to Paradise*, She

Good stuff, heard most of the singles from this before. It's just simple melodies and three power chords for the whole album, but it's still enjoyable. Shows you can make great music without it being overly complex

4.0 + Nostalgic like Saturday morning cartoons with the same outlandish caricatures (maladjusted mama’s boy, deranged terrorist, lazy stoner, hapless lunatic). The ultimate ode to teenage angst of the 1990s.

A true belter of an album.

First album I ever bought in itunes so this is exciting. Punchy, fun, classic Green Day. 9/10

For what it is - it’s at the top of its game - do you call it pop punk ? I always liked this album and listened to it a lot when it was released - it’s ironic that for this album is their high point and I never liked the stuff where they tried to have serious messages etc - Longview is a fucking banger and there’s a few other proper tunes on this too

A really enjoyable album, especially whenever in the mood for some catchy loud music

Yup, good, short and catchy songs. Dookie is one of my least favorite words but that's the only criticism I have. Also the last song was weak.

I am not a Green Day fan but this album was awesome.

Always been a big fan of the band (at least up to American Idiot) and my first concert with no tutor was a Green Day one lol, funnily I did not attended to a second one until 15 years later. I did not give any relevant review to American Idiot (it reads only “Stone cold classic”) but I’ll try to say a bit more on this. I was 7 when this one came out but I remember it very fondly, I really liked the energy and the videos and my siblings loved them also so it was a whole family listen, ever since, we liked every subsequent album specially Nimrod. That all stopped with 21st century breakdown but we had a good go with the band. Listening to Dookie today I gotta say is not as good as I remembered but When I Come Around and specially Basket Case are true classics and the album was influential AF, it is a fun album with a lot of charisma and really one to have listened before dying.

mooi, klassieker die ik niet vaak luister, ik ga meer naar 21st en american idiot.

4,3 Throwback thursday! Genieten hoor! Dit album remind me wel ffkes dat ik een green day fan ben!

Damn 1994? Ouder dan ik dacht. Ik heb te weinig Green Day beluisterd in mijn leven. Album is goed, tweede helft vond ik het sterkste. Basket case is natuurlijk chef's kiss. Zeker iets dat ik nog eens ga luisteren

A couple of good catchy songs. (6/10) Favourite Tracks: Basket case, When I come around

Gut Basic Rock Passt zu jeder Stimmung Longview 👌

So many good bass lines

Hit after hit on this album. Sometimes the songs blur together but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it's so high-energy.

great album. Their best in my opinion

Big fan of Green Day, probably one of my more favorite albums. Definitely full of solid bangers

Been there, done that. Solid album, great intro to Green Day

Some pretty good rock with fun songs. Not exactly my type of rock, and maybe that’s just because the vocalist isn’t my favorite, but it was still great. Instrumentation is fantastic, let those guitars flyyyyy

So much fun and brings back so memories. It’s gritty punk, with excellent production.

I was just telling a friend yesterday that I'd never listened to all of Dookie, what a coincidence! UPDATE: Some of the mixing is absolutely terrible, especially on "Having a Blast." UPDATE 2: More terrible mixing on Welcome to Paradise, weird jumps in loudness.

This is a very solid album. Green Day has their vibe and if you can't abide it, then none of this will work for you. But this songwriting is tight as a drum. Every song here has something melodic to grab on to. Even lowkey lofi closer is pretty crucial.

The punk-rock album. The track are drive and fast.

Green Day's first major label release that was brimming with catchy singles making the airwaves for the early 90's. Its fast pace and wit in lyrics make it a lot more poppy than purists would care to admit.
