Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Right away my impression was "this sounds like Bruce Springstein", and I guess I'm not the only one because that's called out pretty high up in the wikipedia article. The first couple of songs are a little stronger (Under the Pressure and Red Eyes - the latter I may have heard before). The rest is just OK.

Was excited to see this but upon intentional listening, realized I maybe like these guys less than I thought. Maybe just prefer other sad dad rock.

Great road trip album just not my usual vibe.

Mid 3.0.

Hey do you guys like the eagles and dire straits?

indie and psychedelic good i don’t like the tone too much would be better if artist was voicepilled

para una siesta al sol

The same qualities that make it transportive can also make it blur at the edges. There are stretches where mood carries more weight than distinct songwriting, and if you are not in the right frame of mind, the album can feel more enveloping than revelatory.

A little slow and meandering. But gives me vibes of soft, late-80s pop

Not a bad album, not a great album. Just kinda meh.

Killers already did it

Parts of this album I really enjoyed but a lot of it kind of ran together. Like it would fade into the background then something interesting would happen which would bring me back to the music, but then it would fade again. Overall pretty solid though.

Trotzdem stimmungsvoll.

Sounded humdrum

Drug wars man

The album was ok was expecting more

I know this artist. Not sure if this is the album with the one song I know. Pretty cool album actually.

Folk/roots rock with synths. It’s not prog rock but the tracks are ambient and run too long, like a late night drive on the highway type of vibe. The lyrics are like the reflection on the way back home (2.5-3).

There is a lot to like on this album. Under The Pressure is a fine opening track, Suffering is heartfelt and beautiful and An Ocean In Between The Waves picks up the tempo again after it. However, a lot of the songs, including some of those mentioned above, just don't know how to finish! Under The Pressure may be my favourite track, but I don't need the last 3 minutes. Too many times I asked myself, "Is this song still going on?" and it takes away more than it adds. Be considerate - I have another 1000 albums to get through!! Disappearing begins well but quickly becomes tedious, and that almost sadly becomes a metaphor for the album as a whole. Could have been a high 4, turns out to be a middling 3 stars.

Snore and Shrugs. That was uncalled for, it's actually not that bad. Any one of these songs could hold its own if it were on a mid-1980s soundtrack. The only thing that is noticeably bad about this album is the drumming (or programming). The '80s beats should have been left in the '80s. 30 years later. It's not nostalgic, it's just dumb.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

Back to resi!

I bet this goes so crazy on a long and contemplative late night drive

A very pleasant MAB entry that, perhaps similar to the legendary MAB himself, has an air of fragility...maybe one should not dig too deep on this one. Maybe somethings fall apart when challenged. Let it flower and observe, but engage at your own risk.

Decent, but all their songs sound the same and are too long.

Not overly excited about a lot of the tunes, as they were a bit backgroundy Springsteen generic. However, I loved the guitar soundscape work. It's gorgeous.

Listened twice to this album, it's something to get into. Got postrock music with some softer voices. Liked it, I think, but I think it'll grow more on me. 1. Suffering 2. Eyes To The Wind 3. Suffering

Bob Dylan vocals with very shimmery instrumentals to listen before sleep

Not what I was expecting. Kind of that new wave American folk.

This album got a lot of hype when it first came out and I really wanted to like it, but found myself disappointed by it. I was happy to see it come up again today in the hope that I'd find a new appreciation for it. Unfortunately I didn't. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing that I don't like about this, but equally there's nothing that I particularly love about it either. The ambient instrumental asides that some songs meander into are interesting. But they always lost me when they would segue into mediocre Springsteen impersonations. It's decent, grand, and enjoyable at times. But if I'm honest, I probably wouldn't be rushing to put it on again.

Variety: 2 Adequacy: 5 Listenability: 3 Uniqueness: 2 Emotionality: 2 = 2.8 rounded up to a 3 "Must I always be the thief? / Come to me now, you know/ We’re so low/ And life is brief" A band I know almost zero about other than the name and that Kurt Vile was briefly a member. I generally like the stuff I've heard from him, so hope this one's not a dud. THE TRACKS "Under the Pressure" - Right away I was relieved to find this to be the more or less, shaggy eclectic kind of modern indie rock that I tend to lean towards. It's not trying to pull off any crazy tricks, but is a confident mid-tempo rocker without pretensions. Adam Granduciel's vocals I think I've seen compared to Dylan in some of the prep I did for this, and while that's in the mix, I think maybe it's more a case of him being influenced by the guys who were in turn influenced by Dylan. It's certainly not an impersonation. He feels relaxed and unflashy, and it's all in service to the music, which I find to be pretty, with just enough electronic effects to assist the vibe without overtaking. Not sure the three minute drone was necessary, but as an opening statement ( and these first tracks I will almost always give a lot of weight to as they set the tone). "Red Eyes" - Speaking of those 1st wave Dylan influenced acts, this one feels heavily indebted to Springsteen. This isn't terrible, but two tracks in and I had to stop and go back to the first song to see exactly what the differences were here. It's a little faster paced, and there are differences, the krautrock beat is more determined and driving, and there are more celebratory sounding flourishes. Hard to tell if this is a case of the band just solidly sounding like themselves, which can be a credit to a band who quickly found a distinct voice, or if it's a lack of ideas. This one lands on the positive side for me atm, as that exploding chorus works very well for me. "Suffering" - It seems we're travelling backwards in time as this one is more 70's-era Boz Skaggs than 80s-era The Boss. Granduciel keeps the echo effect on his vocals, but lightens and stretches his intonation out so that he's got a tad more Tom Petty in the mix. Or maybe Paul Westerberg after he healed up nicely from getting some throat nodules removed. This is not too dissimilar from some of the Mark Mulchahy stuff that I adore, so I'm down for it. It's slow and thoughtful, but never ponderous. A light touch is welcome after the first two, which were a burst of ( still restrained) energy to start things off. "An Ocean in Between the Waves" - The Postal Service was not an act I thought I'd be referencing on here, but there you go. We get what sounds like a drum machine to my ears. The early 80s Dire Straights are all over this as Granduciel seems to be purposefully invoking Knopfler's phrasing. This mostly works for me. "Disappearing" - The influences seem to be dominating this one, and here I'm reminded heavily of 80s Don Henley. That's not necessarily a bad thing as the guy knew his way around a hook or two. This is largely just vibes though. Fine enough, but nothing for me to really sink my teeth into. An aptly named track, as it sort of blends into everything else we've heard. "Eyes to the Wind" - Some country touches on this one with a steel guitar very low in the mix sounds like. But no more than you might find on a prime Bob Seger song, which is what this reminds me of. unlike Seger though, this one never busts open any ear candy choruses or vocal hooks. "The Haunting Idle" - Some airy, dreamy synths guide us all the way through this one. Ok atmosphere, but where's your song. Hate to call it padding, but certainly feels like it. "Burning" - More 80s Springsteen on the menu looks like. This one felt much more like pastiche than any of the previous touches on that sound though. Weird Al's style parodies come to mind, but without a lick of humor or irony. That bell organ sound is so very specific, that they have to unabashedly wearing those influences on their sleeves. I appreciate the unembarrassed boldness of it. We even get a very Bruce-ey "WOOO!" thrown in for good measure. Still not terrible as that sort of thing goes I guess. "Lost in the Dream" - This sleepy number is maybe the thing that most reminded me of Kurt Vile on here. Pleasantly shambolic bit of indie folk supported by some nice ringing guitar work and a tastefully applied bit of electric piano. I don't even mind the harmonica, as it's brief and there's no solo. I hate me a harmonica solo almost as much as I love me some hand claps. "In Reverse" - This one didn't work for me as a song either. And just felt more like they didn't want to repeat "The Haunting Idle" and so added just a little bit more. Again, not awful, but not for me. HIGHLIGHTS - "Under the Pressure" - "Red Eyes" - "An Ocean in Between the Waves" - "Lost in the Dream" MIDLIGHTS - "Suffering" - "Disappearing" - "Burning" LOWLIGHTS - "Eyes to the Wind" - "The Haunting Idle" - "In Reverse" FINAL THOUGHTS I was not expecting so much electronic instrumentation on here. It mixed very well with the sort of unostentatious, heartland rock these guys were very painfully trying to conjure. While I genuinely like a lot of that stuff, it'll never be my favorite. I wouldn't call it milquetoast, or bland, but maybe... comforting, and uh, gently seasoned. I'm lean more Roxy Music and less Springsteen. They also didn't shit the bed though. Above all I found this to be a pretty self assured statement. I think I might have a fair to middling chance of identifying this band given a random track from another one of their albums. This felt less like formula or lack of ideas, and more like design. This is their third album, so I would hope this would be the case by that point. This would never be my first choice of an album to throw on, or my second or even fifteenth, but I'm glad I listened to it and would certainly be open to listening to more of their stuff. Genuinely curious to see if this was just a stop along the way, or if there are several albums that sound very similar. Otherwise this was a fine enough calling card of an album. Nothing too special, but nothing offensive. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Not sure this will ever make any play lists as there is just SO MUCH MORE music in the world to listen to. FURTHER LISTENING - The River by Bruce Springsteen - Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights - Surprise Surprise Surprise by Miracle Legion - Back to Moon Beach EP by Kurt Vile

A contemplative, Bob Dylan-esque modern rock album. It was much moodier than what I expected, but my experience with the band is limited to the few songs I've heard but couldn't name from the radio. Pretty good!

This seems weird to say, but the instruments seem British, while the vocals are more American. The lead singer's voice reminds me of Paul Simon crossed with Bob Dylan (except, unlike Dylan, he can actually sing). Very simple and repetitive rhythm section, with other instruments swirling around in the background. Not particularly my cup of tea, but very well done.

Might come back to this one

Little too slow for my liking. Did sound like a modern day Bryan Adam’s though.

Ist chillig

Painfully middle of the road. Little wrong with it, but little of any excitement occurring here.

It’s mellow and understated. I can see why it would appeal to some people

3/5. The 2010’s was the decade where I really began to pay attention to new music releases, but at the time the War on Drugs completely passed me by so this is my first time listening to a record of theirs, and it’s alright. Decent blend of Springsteen-esque Americana and psychedelic indie rock. The vocals are solid and glide over this style of instrumental smoothly. My favorites were probably “under the pressure” and “disappearing.” Dunno that I’ll come back to this one as a full listen but there were at least a good handful of solid tracks.

Slow and spacy kinda folk rock album. I'm a fan of Kurt Vile already so pretty immediately I clocked that he had something to do with this. I really appreciate his and by extention TWOD's cadence when singing. It really does capture the sort of rambling daydream quality of the album. I def prefer Vile's solo stuff but this was a cute little album to vibe out to.

I find this an interesting album, it’s like a cross between Gilmour and Dylan. Overall the album doesn’t have a lot of energy, but it is pleasant to listen to…if you’re in a mellow mood.

Definitely some Bob Dylan and Springsteen influence. Sometimes this album is a little too mellow for me.

I really liked Suffering and Under the Pressure. Good sound.

Good indie rock. Lots of good guitar parts floating on top of "dreamy, guazy" sounding melodies.

Chille luister

Don’t really see what is so great about this. Did not leave a lasting impression at all.

it was fine. i thought i didnt know any songs by them but i guess one was used in a bojack finale so that's cool

Has some interesting atmospherics. I know this is a much-loved album for people who like this genre and I can see some of the appeal. I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, so probably missing out on something there. Good background music for me, but nothing more.

S'okay.

liked it!

I appreciate the vibe/sound. But I don’t really connect with the songs. Also, you could probably say that any good band—which, by necessity, settles on a sound and *commits* to it—is a little one-note. But this album really takes that to the next level. So samey-same. 3.5?

It was pretty good 🙂👍. My favorites were Red Eyes, Suffering, and Eyes to the Wind. Overall, very Bob Dylan-ish, but it also had a unique twist to it. I’d give it a 3.8/5! 😐🥱.

The War on Drugs is a good natured, meandering, slowly unfurling, vaguely uplifting, updated take on Bruce Springsteen, smudged with plenty of reverb. It's a solid album but I’m not hearing the classic that others treasure, quite possibly because I have less reverence for the reference points at play here. It does however have a great flow, and a real sense of journey across the LP.

New to me and pretty damned good. The reviews made me believe this was gonna be sad man rock. It was not. Interesting and mildly unique. Sounds like someone that grew up on Pink Floyd.

Some parts of this feels like they drag on a bit. But not bad. 6/10

Not heard of, and from the write up was kind of looking forward to, a popular blending of 80s rock and Americana - could be up for that. If you were keeping rock going in 2014, great. But like when I had that band that were supposedly the modernising of folk rock it’s just anodyne music, that it just left me somewhat cold. All super clean production and spot on musicianship, a positive but overall it was quiet uninspired, inoffensive and a pedestrian hour. Good on atmosphere, bit dragged out, but lacked anything resembling a great/good song, an overall pleasant ambiance, lost in a dream indeed. So ultimately I just found it well, a meandering reaching back vibe that was at best ok, if it had come out at the same time of it’s influences would it be on here, hell no, so a generous 3 star.

The Killers at home:

Strong 80s vibe, some pretty cool songs

Clearly, this guy was meant to write Red Eyes. I'm not sure if I envy him for having achieved his life's purpose, or pity him for the fact that every other by him will forever remain in the shadows of his masterpiece.

i like the album, it really gives me a 2015/2016 vibe, like the songs i used to listen to back then. thanks!

None of the songs were bad but none made much of an impression. I do not like the vocalist much. An Ocean Between the Waves is a good song. I get a but if a Spaceman 3 meets MMJ vibe from them without being as good as either of those bands I mentioned.

This was nice, but kind of in the most generic way possible. So...yeah.

Pleasant enough, nothing stood out particularly, sounded a bit Dylan-ish in places

10’s Rock ⭐️An Ocean Between The Waves

Could get lost in the repeating loops and guitar solos. Not quite ambient

Buen disco

Not bad but same sound every song

Pretty dreamy and folky. If I listened in the right mood I think I’d really like it. Didn’t give it enough attention on this go so I’ll definitely come back to it.

My first time ever hearing this artist, let alone listening to him. I got this album during my study session for my finance test. The random probability gods worked out in my favor for this one because it was the perfect mellow, tune-out, relaxing album I probably could have gotten. I would probably not listen again on a normal day, but maybe on a cloudy, mind numbing one. The music was really beautiful and hold lots of emotion.

Decent 3 because some songs are great and some songs just sound a lot like the great ones.

I’d heard the name but never heard the music. Not sure what I expected, but it could have been some quite bland middle of the road safe sound with a bit of rock - which would explain why I’ve never sought the band out before. Production wise it’s very good, so that probably boosts the album from a 2 to a 3 for me. It’s certainly not bad - just very safe and a bit dull for my tastes. It’s got that nasally Dylan sound, and I’m not a Dylan fan so that also doesn’t help. The more Springsteen-esque tracks are probably their better ones.

Sounded like a lot of stuff I like. Was less rock than I'd expected

Bon mais trop long!

Great ambient music but not really for active listening

The War on Drugs’ Lost in the Dream is a richly textured, atmospheric record that leans more on mood than momentum. Echoes of The Cure shimmer through its layered guitars and synths, while the vocal tone and heartland rock touches occasionally recall Bryan Adams. Its cohesion is undeniable, but the album’s steady tempos and restrained vocal dynamics mean it rarely rises or falls, trading emotional peaks for a hypnotic consistency. The result is immersive and polished, yet at times feels just out of reach of something truly transcendent. Decent working music. I want to give it more than a 3, yet it's not quite enough for a 4 IMO.

The most recent album I've gotten yet. I was excited to listen to this in full because I previously never really gave them a chance, despite hearing and enjoying songs like Under the Pressure and Red Eyes on Alt Nation all the time back in 2015/2016. Those songs, and many of the songs here, are enjoyable. Something just falls a little flat for me. I'm not connecting in the same way I connect to some of the music that has clearly inspired this record. All in all, a very pleasant listen.

It all kind of sounds the same.

I liked under the pressure

Really interesting sound but sometimes was slow in a boring way. Decent!

Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and The Waterboys blended with indie rock and car advertisement music. It works well at times and gets a bit repetitive and overdrawn in others. It is still a nice listen. By the way, is it just me or the track Burning has the same keyboard riff as Rod Stewart's Young Turks?

It was ok. Nothing special

A few songs I really liked. Songs were so long. Honestly a good winter background album.

A little psychedelic U2-ish mixed with modern alt rock?

- Chill, easy listening, if a bit forgettable

I really don't get the fuss? Perfectly unobjectionable but only one or two memorable tracks. Plus the tone of language on their wiki is insufferable.

Music for driving at night

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Its better than a 3 but not by to much.

There’s something about it. But not sure yet

I appreciate the unique sound, but it's all a bit samey after a while, I can't really understand how these guys were SO big for a moment. Not bad, but just bland.

Good album but repetitive.

It was fine. Kind of boring. No standout songs to get excited about.

coming of age movie soundtrack

lmao he sounds like bob dylan. i don’t think i ever checked these guys out bc of the band name. they’re good though. for the most part i liked under the pressure. red eyes was fine. atm, this isn’t doing much for me and im not sure why bc on paper i should love this. i took a break before disappearing. that song was gorgeous. and i’m loving eyes to the wind so far, surprised this wasn’t the lead single. there was a great stretch from suffering to the haunting isle. i hope it sticks the landing. i liked this but i also found it very frustrating.

V nice

I like all of the parts but it just doesn't add up to as much as I want. Really between a 3 and a 4 for me.

Good but maybe not for me, getting old you know.

I actually like this kind of dreamy melancholic reverb sound that invokes feelings of nostalgia and something I can’t really describe. So why isn’t it really working here? Is it because all the tracks are drawn-out and should have been shorter? Or is it because the tracks are dull, there’s not much happening with that sound? I mean it just goes..and goes..with no development, no progress in it. The fact that I don’t like the vocal doesn’t help either. Examples of such kind of “nostalgic” sound that actually works for me would be Wild Nothing (and - to a certain extent as they a bit different sonically - Still Corners), but this one is just meh.

This was ok.

Someone is really into solo 80's Don Henley

Nice background music, would go hard in a cafe

Every song does not need to be 7+ minutes long, guys. And yet, 3.5.

Very same-y, but if one likes that kind of sound, one will probably like that album. It works fine for me.

I know the name but have never listened. This first track is perfect whilst waiting for my morning commute, the sun just starting to breach the darkness of the hills in the east. The vocals are somewhat... Dylan? Odd stresses and stretches. The first track lingers a little longer than I normally like, but again in this morning setting it fits. Like the song is giving me time to wake up and catch up. On to track two, this is a bit more upbeat and awake, much like myself. Dylan is still in there, now wrestling with Rick Ocasek. The overall sound now is young Springsteen but in 2014 and not 1974. I suspect this is the tone for the rest of the album. (PS it was, and very Tom Petty, still a good listen)

Not horrible, just kind of blah rock. They way overshot it with their spotify artist summary.

Menevää indierockia. Red Eyes biisi jopa todella hyvä.

back ground music

kind of nondescript but very pleasant background music

Sepia toned, wide frame and analogue, music made with so much reverence for the past it feels like an act of homage. Vitally though it never feels like cheap mimicry, there is far too much skill and care in it's creation. Deservedly beloved, if a little too baggy by the end to be called a true classic.

Oasis meets Dylan. It’s a little beige, and monotone, but there’s enough movement that it’s kinda nice and fun.

Yeah this was fine, probably need to give it another listen. A bit of Sam fender vibes from it 3

This is like if you blended up Arcade Fire with some Bob Dylan, a bit of Springsteen, and some other things I'm not placing. It's not bad by any stretch and nice to listen to. If you hadn't ever heard music before this would destroy your mind. Wouldn't put it on. Wouldn't complain if it was on.

Not that bad for 2014. First track made me roll my eyes but after that it was fine. Bruce Springsteen with a bit more modern sound. Mostly forgettable.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

najs vibe

A couple of decent singles on there but a very bland album

Only listened halfway, decent, need to revisit for the rest

Standouts Under the Pressure An Ocean in Between the Waves Disappearing

Ok. 3.4

Idéal pour une sieste

yt man pain on guitar, will listen

I like 2010s indie generally but I wasn’t wowed

Felt very Americana with Eyes to the Wind being the beginning of it feeling like a Bruce Springsteen record. Occasionally the singer’s tone was reminiscent of Bob Dylan. Unlikely to relisten but wasn’t unenjoyable.

Very listenable, but it says a lot that I didn’t notice when it started playing other bands when the album finished. Background indie.

"This is cool," I said to myself midway through the first song, "but I have a suspicion that the whole album might sound like this. If it does, I'm going to check out pretty quickly." And lo! The whole album did sound like that.

Glenn Frey called (from the great beyond); he wants his album back. Was going to give this a 2, but then I thought about the baritone sax on Red Eye and decided I should rethink this. I almost gave it a 4! But then "An Ocean In Between the Waves" came on, and I remembered how much I dislike Glenn Frey and wondered why a band would spend so much time trying to sound like him. Then I got sleepy. Then I decided to give this a solid 3. Middle of the pack band, middle of the pack sound, middle of the pack ranking.

3/5 - I like the first two songs, and then I'm good. It's all competent stuff, but nothing I'd call great. Lacks a dynamic range for me.

Too slow paced and not enough stand out songs on here for me but the overall atmosphere and sound was good albeit not very memorable.

Chill background music for playing minecraft but also wannabe bob dylan kinda

Hmm, I know I've heard songs by this band, but have no memory of what they sounded like. That's usually a bad sign, but we'll see. So this is normal rock music, competently done. It sounds a lot like what Dire Straits would have sounded like if they were interesting; there are lots of blurry instrumental bits and pleasant, indistinct vocals. The wiki says these guys were influenced by the Spacemen 3, which I'm not really hearing, but maybe that's where the nice blurriness comes from. I'm looking at 3 stars for this; it's not something I'm going to run out and look for a copy of since I don't really listen to normal rock music much anymore. But it didn't make me want to turn it off.

Eh. Like lo-fi for background music but it's probably not anything I'm looking for by name.

okay background music, reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen. Their biggest song is okay but the CD is very similar style throughout and not really my vibe

another mid-2000s indie album in the books

Now that's some damn good soft rock music.

Not at all unique, but the general kind of thing I default to.

Nice blend of heartland rock and psychedelic sounds in the spirit of Neil Young. There isn’t much variation across the album, but its mood perfectly captures the feeling of spring (at least for me).

very okay, very alright album. 1st track did well with setting it up kinda, then the 2nd and 3rd tracks were the peakest for me <3 overall a very alright really alright album. very vibey but thats really everything the album offers. i wish there was more mawma

Pretty good, sounds like something that I would listen to when playing Minecraft at 2am but overall very pleasant 3.5/5

Adore the band but this album is a little hit and miss in parts. Of course Under the Pressure is the standout track.

128/1001 First listen. I know the name but never heard a TWOD song before. There is a lot to compare these guys to, so not much new going on here. Odd choice for an album opener. It never wants to end. Seems better to close with it. Second song. Didn’t I just hear this? It’s a good listen but I feel like there are better versions out there of what they’re trying to do here. It’s got a good vibe though. I might check up on this again. 5/10

Very much a 2010's indie take on ambient while also being a Bob Dylan/Tom Petty worship band. I remember liking Slave Ambient from them, and I feel like I've heard this before and liked it. But that was over a decade ago at this point, and at this point in time, it's really not doing a ton for me. Really sleepy music, even when it's moving. Good album, but pretty meh for me.

Fine, easy listening, nothing standout. A little too much washed out guitar interludes for my tastes.

A lot of lush layer guitar arrangements creating atmospheric composition. The songs are all a bit too long though.

A lot moodier than I was expecting, still pretty good indie.

Musically, it was pretty good. It's amongst the better indie rock I've heard, but not quite a 4.

This is a low 3 bordering on 2. I mean it's a perfectly acceptable indie-pop album, but it's kind of boring and does not rise to the level of something that "must be heard before you die". I'd put this on the list of 10 million albums you may hear once in your life and forget. So I guess I'm not mad at the album, I'm mad at the editors for wasting a slot with it.

Fantastic record. Loved the longer songs with the guitars walls of noise. I’ve heard this album grows which I am looking forward to. I did like this but it didn’t blow me away like some other albums have so far

While not being surprising this is a solid album, well made and with a point of view. I fear the score is a bit harsh, but the sound of it while odd for 2014, is very reminiscent of earlier music, and also not that different track to track. I think the idea was to make long songs, but it is a bit much here, making the whole thing sounding repetitive, and a little hard to digest hence why it's only a 3. But to me this is good, even though if I could pick myself I'll probably swap it for the second album

Definitely and indie vibe… Probably a good album for study sessions

Gillar Red Eyes mycket!

I found this really difficult to get behind as they clearly have alot of talent but just come across as a mash-up tribute band. The first 2 tracks are very good though and elevate my score from a 2.

This is mostly just fine throughout - the song length doesn't bother me until there's a mediocre song and then it is very grating. The first two tracks are honestly fantastic and maybe set the bar too high if anything

It was okay. A bit boring

Ok Sunday morning vibes

Totally listenable. But totally unmemorable. I listened to this twice and I can't actually tell you anything about it. But I wasn't praying for it to end, so it can't be that bad

Cool album, but have some boring moments

I may have listened to this in the past, but I honestly can't remember. It's perfectly competent, if not particularly memorable soft indie rock. I didn't hate it and if it came up in a queue I wouldn't skip it, but I don't think I'd seek any of this out again.

Very heavy nostalgia trip on this one, this album was huge amonst my group of friends and we all tried to TWOD almost obsessively at each and every possibility. The album dragged a bit more than i remembered, i guess the two big hits are right at the start so the momentum feels a bit lacking after?? Maybe im only here for the glory i dunno, i really enjoyed living 10 years ago again for a bit. 3.6/5.0 Best Song: Under The Pressure

This was good. I expected more bland indie-rock, but this was mature and sophisticated compared to some of the crud this list has thrown my way so far. I definitely heard a Dylan influence, but overall I enjoyed this.

Great album for background - musically very soothing

Lush. Sounds like my college beau.

oh well. not a big fan of their dense sound, miss the great tunes.

It's interesting that The War on Drugs was right after Deerhunter. Both albums were really good and both had at least one part in every song that made me go "oh yeah, I like that" but neither had a banger or hit that really grabbed me. I did add one song from this band to my playlist but I imagine, just like Built to Spill, it will be the only one and the War on Drugs will continue to be a "background" band for me.

Cool vibe and an easy listen.

10 tracks and 1hr 35?!? What the hell. Intrigued but not very hopeful for this one… Hmmm kinda Bruce Springsteen meets Coldplay and The Killers. 6 minutes into the first track and more than done. 3 minutes still to go 🫠 Yeh, not really impressed by this. Feels pretty flat and basic, in ways. Just doesn’t grab or intrigue me and pretty much got my fill a few tracks in.

Not the sound I was expecting

Wie immer zu lang. 4 top songs, rest dudeliger filler

I’m pretty meh on this.

Again, great style, but not for me

Modern sad person music, as perfectly described by my friend. I liked it but would really need a very specific introspective or sad mood to enjoy it.

Had a few good hits. Decent album. Nothing overwhelmingly special but I enjoyed it nonethe less.

I’ve had this album since it came out. It’s good and it has a nice driving-with-the-windows-down vibe to it but no song ever really stands out. Not bad, not earth shattering. 3.5/5

fun, inhaler-esque, i

I kept checking the album info because it doesn't sound like a 2014 release. Dude was leaning into the 80's music I'm guessing he grew up with. I'm digging the vibe on this one. I don't think it will hit every time I play it but it's one of those albums where the weather is right and I'm not in it and I will want to listen to it. Didn't know the band before but I added this one to my library and will be listening to more of their stuff.

Strange music, don't hate it, don't love it.

It was pleasant enough that I think I played it threee times while I was working yesterday, but I honestly don't remember any of the songs the next day.

*Good ambient sound *I can hear the Dylan/Springsteen influences *I prefer music with a faster tempo

I like the production but not so much the knockoff Dylan vocals. A lot of the songs drag on too long.

nice to listen to, dunno if I'd listen to again. songs go on a bit too long

What if you made a THE WEEKND backing track less fun? There's nothing to really dislike here, but there's nothing to really get excited about, either. I bet this was great for the right person at the right time but now, ten years on, I think anyone discovering this has lots of options to discover similar through history. Perfectly passable stuff. Also seems inappropriate to be listening to during daylight. Took me almost the entire album to peg them not as Bruce or Don Henley but...Gang of Youths' Angel of 8th Avenue. Which I guess came after.

I liked a few songs (Best was Eyes to the Wind). Most everything else had a few good ideas but was fairly dull and sooo long. With some editing this could have been a great album.

Solid music but not terribly memorable for me.

Nice mellow background music. Has phrasing that reminds me of Dylan, but I can also hear Springsteen too. Really liked The Haunting Idle.

Sounds good but not really my thing.

Reminded me of a lot of things I like. Like dream pop/rock Bruce Springsteen

Yeah, it is unclear to me what this album wants to do. It is very pleasant to listen to this music while in the sun on a festival field somewhere. I can tell from experience. But is it really memorable and moving? Well not to me. 'Under the Pressure' is a really nice song though imo, moving it up from a 2/5 to a slightly higher rating. 3/5

The sound itself is fine, but all the songs kind of blend together and sound the same

Pleasant enough if a little bland in places! Not a bad listening but not overly exciting.

An Ocean in between the Waves was a sleeper hit. Everything else was pretty forgettable.

I just don't get it... It's all a bit too serious and boring. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 198 Already owned : 44 Purchased : 8 To buy list : 5 Nope : 141

Another band I’d never heard of. Interesting mix of genres almost sounded 90s. Not a bad listen.

familiar sounding but interesting !

Not for me, but I see the appeal. Spacey jammy rocky

great sound reminded me of Sam fender. Instrumentals are to long for my taste.

Didn't think I was gonna like it because the songs are very long and mostly it's just the instrumental, but I enjoyed it, it's a good album. Even tho songs are kinda the same and very forgettable it's a very calm and cozy vibe. It's good for night rides and relaxing. Would listen again

Hyvää blues-pohjaista meininkiä, bändi vetää mahtavasti (Half Moon etenkin)

***an ok instrumental album. Easy listening

molt guay és música q em pega escoltar en el tren en el solet pegant-me en la cara mirant la natura m dona eixes vibres under the pressure, red eyes i eyes to the wind les millors

Favorite Song: Under the Pressure, In Reverse Least Favorite Song: The Haunting Idle Woooow the lyrics are beautiful, I think this album will only get better with time.

Good god, SOMEONE likes Bob Dylan...

soft psychedelic synth music, frequencies not my type, but cool

Pretty solid.

Thought it was ok, great music just not entirely for me

Not that bad but a bit depressing but a good vibe

My thought: If Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were a shoegaze band. Maybe that is based on the vocals and the dissonant sounds that were created around melodic songs. First listen I wasn't able to tell what any of the songs were about, but the music and vocals were good. The kind of music a hip independent record store would probably rate highly on their year end album chart. I'll have to listen again to find out what I missed. Is this their best album? Do they have any popular songs? Or are they an underground band that intentionally makes music only the "cool" people will pretend to understand? Not as harsh as Sonic Youth and not as clever as Neutral Milk Hotel. More rockin' than Belle and Sebastian. I need to listen again because I'm all over the place. Will be interesting in 2 years when I'm a huge The War On Drugs fan and I reread these notes and wonder if maybe I was on drugs. But I did not like the dissonant sounds to start or end the album this I am sure.

A little moody. A little boring.

New one to me again - nice! And another I like! Vocals are Springteenesqe and Dylanesque…but that’s cool by me. Quite a bit going on here for me to unpack in the recording also. Sounds like the kind of stuff my daughter introduces me to….Sam Fender in particular. Like it. Going into rotation. Solid 3

This one was a complete and pleasant surprise. I didn’t have high hopes that I’d enjoy this but very much did.

6/10, 1 liked

Fine enough, but the dreamy Americana never quite lands with anything interesting for me 3*

My rating 3..3

3.5, not a bad album, I am a big fan of atmospheric rock, not necessarily the same rock song being repeated 10 times

Good as a background music Wouldn’t listen to it on a daily basis

It’s alright

I enjoyed this, but wasn’t anything amazing. The first couple songs were strongest and then it went downhill a bit. Maybe too ambient sounding for me, but a nice album overall. Top Songs: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes

Chill and contemplative indie rock. It's very ambient, spacious and dreamlike and might work well as background music or to listen to while relaxing. Not exciting enough for me though.

Wish it was an instrumental album or at least an alternate version because it would make it a quite pleasant ambient listening experience or something to drive to. Singer is trying to be Dylan, Don Hanley or the resident town acoustic guitar by the fire singer. Oh well.

Dreamy I like what I’ve heard so far

Burning is my favorite song on this album. It’s short, hooky into the point. While the other songs have some great elements such as Under Pressure, they’re just too darn long. The length of the songs caused me to turn against them.

not my fave - good music - great guitar lines - no hook - 3

A heavy focus on setting and atmosphere, but i feel it doesnt deliver on the content or character. This album has beautiful scenery and musicianship, i just feel like the replayability is missing for it to score higher. Id like to revisit this album more but im struggling to find the motivatikn, whi isnt to say it wasnt enjoyable fieat time round; kimd of like the Isle of Whight, Ive been once, I'll try Blackpool next thankyou very much.

its fine I guess. Very background music ish. Didn't grab me

I do like it, and some of the individual songs are amazing. But it is very long and lacking any change in texture. Reality is too good for 3 stars, but good enough for 4.

I have heard this band mentioned in passing, but I had no concept of their music until listening to this. My thoughts are pretty scattered, but we'll see how I land after getting them all out on paper. Listening to the opening track, "Under The Pressure", I really appreciate the vision here: a Dire-Straits-esque version of country new wave updated for the 2010s. Honestly it's not so different from the 'post country' kinda sound I've been noodling around with lately and it's nice to hear a working version out there in the world. However, the vocals do feel very Mark Knopfler meets Tom Petty meets Bob Dylan in a way that doesn't feel wholly original or authentic. Track two, "Red Eyes", is the most popular track on the album, based on Spotify listens. It feels like it took A LOT of inspiration from Grateful Dead's "Touch Of Grey", like probably too much inspiration. A great song to take inspiration from, but on the heels of the derivative opener, it's not setting a great tone for the album. Track three, "Suffering", is piano-forward (except for the big guitar solo) and its down-tempo really carries this listener into the dreamy place promised in the album title. So far, this is the most original sounding track on the record. "The Ocean In Between The Waves" brings us squarely back into Dire Straits territory and I'm starting to wonder if I'll have the same complaint about this album that I had about the DS debut album... it's a great idea but the whole album is just slight variations of that same idea without much differentiation. "Disappearing" doesn't do much to change my mind, but I appreciate the minimal vocals. This feels like a solid base for that 'post country' thing I mentioned earlier; but it needs a little more build and crescendo. "Eyes To The Wind" delivers more of that build I was looking for, but it also takes us further down the same road. We're halfway through the album and it's all mostly the same. Thank God for "The Haunting Idle" for pumping the brakes a little bit, we were getting pretty crazy. This slow ambient cooldown is exactly what the record called for. "Burning" is all Bruce Springsteen. Honestly, not an unwelcome BPM boost, but I hate that we're back in derivative country. "Lost In The Dream" is lost in the album. I'd maybe hoped for more from the title track, but by track nine we're pretty much locked into our thesis. Maybe this IS the thesis and the final track will go a different direction and launch us back into reality? "In Reverse" does not promise to do that. It starts off as "The Haunting Idle" with 100% more vocals (Free!). It does swell into rock-adjacent territory, but settles back down to sleep again; not the finale I'd hoped for. Ultimately, this record feels like an hour of very vibey background music. That's not high praise, but I honestly don't hate it. I just can't get past how much it borrows from the past. I think I end up in the same place I did with Lloyd Cole And The Commotions (the other 'we have Dire Straits at home' act I've found on this list). Hot (Out)takes: "What if Kings Of Leon were more boring" "Muzak for your urban hipster housewares & vintage store" "We asked AI to imagine what song Bob Dylan and Tom Petty would write if you told them that Queen and David Bowie collaborated on a song called "Under Pressure" but didn't actually play the song for them."

Dreamy arena style springsteen dylan vibes. Actually loved how the first song started my day, it’s very soothing. It gets a little tiresome after the fourth track or so - it’s all the same production and songwriting. I feel there is more potential to what they’re doing here but it’s not tapped into enough. Curious about their later work but this was somewhat disappointing.

Under the Pressure was a killer opener

Near, kind of sounds 80s-ish

That's a fine album. The singer sometimes reminds me of Bob Dylan and that's not a good thing for me. The music is good though. 3.2 stars, rounding down.

Good for studying to

alright

Overall not a bad album! The first song was certainly my favorite/best on the album.

Maybe I'll listen again when I'm not running on a highway.

I feel like this one might grow on me. Will definitely check it out again later.

Got bored, a slog to get through. A very pretentious Spotify self description. Their music doesn't match to it.

This is pleasant indie music - I very much hear the American heartlands Petty Springsteen type influences but I still found it nice to listen to.

This album was fine, I feel like I would’ve loved it when I was younger, but ultimately I found it pretty forgettable.

I wasn’t familiar with this band. It sounded nice in the background, will give another listen to.

Wonderfully crafted music. Best of the unheard stuff from the list so far.

This is a fun little groovy album! A little Dire Straits, a little Tom Petty, a little Bob Dylan... I'm into it.

Inoffensive

The music was nice but I couldn't tell you anything that they sung about though as the lyrics just seemed to get lost in the music.

Pleasant and forgettable

I see the appeal. I actually like all the noisy experimental dirges that lose their way from the original song structure and dont feature vocals. The vocals are very take it or leave it, not bad. Its cool. I dont know anyone that NEEDS to hear this before they die.

Mystical and ethereal sounds. First track was the opening completely to this amazing album and band which I didn't knew until I heard it, the mix between pot-rock ambient sounds and an indie sound is incredible, really liked it.

Nice background music, but unremarkable.

i liked this i thought it was easy to listen to and had chill vibes

Hazy beach vibes

Not my type of music but a very important album to me

This album is odd. It has a unique sound which I really like and it's also great in terms of quality of production. However, the flow is quite monotone and all songs are indistinguishable from each other. It lacks a hit or two. Very good background music, though.

The first song was good, and the rest kinda blended into one another. I might go back to this, but overall i remember thinking slightly positive on it.

At least this album's better than that '80s record I reviewed yesterday. There were a few boring songs on "Lost in the Dream". I loved "Red Eyes"; it deserves its fame. The song's guitar riff in the middle is simply perfect. The other tracks aren't worth mentioning. 3 stars for "Lost in the Dream".

Never heard of the band or album, no expectations. First song starts off good it’s fun. Songwriting isn’t special but I like the production a lot. Really cool intro too. A little long but cool nonetheless the less. Red eyes is fun too, this band is more abt music than catchy choruses which I can respect. Find myself tapping my foot along to the beat. Suffering is super emotional, piano and keyboard riffs are sick. Don’t usually like sad songs but this one is doing something to me. First 3 songs all good. I like an ocean as well but not as much as the rest, good not great song. Better songwriting, not as good production. Disappearing is another good one, this album is super cohesive. Eyes to the wind is another one that’s not the best of all time but just a good song. The haunting idle is interesting. Good music, cool bridge song but a little too long. I like burning too, another emotional but fun song. Lost in the dream has some Bob Dylan vibes with the harmonica. Again good not great. In reverse is a really good closer. There’s no one song that I’d say is a commercial hit, but the album as a whole is a really good easy listen. 3.2 stars

Great album

Surprising that I liked it. It's a good background album.

This album is from 2014, but it sounds like it could be from just about any decade from the 1970s onward. I notice a bit of Bruce Springsteen vibe in here also. Overall, it’s clean, easy to listen to music. Additional listenings might result in a higher rating, but alas we’re moving on.

More unknown-to-me recent indie? Hmm. Well, it's alright. Not noisy or annoying, but doesn't have any particular unique features (vocally/musically/lyrically) to draw me in. Maybe some unpopular things are unpopular for a reason. Also, all of the songs are 50% too long.

The sound is a little too ambient and sunshiny for me. But i can hear that there is more to this. Many of the songs seem to go on too long. I’d like to give it another listen, but for now, it’s a 3.

Not my type of music but actually really enjoyed. Would never relisten 🤷🏼‍♀️
