This album could've just been 30 minutes of white noise and Rooster, and It'd still be great. Instead, you get to hear an hour of sick riffs and self-deprecation through a haunting voice. What an album.

Gotta be honest this one was not really for me. I came to eventually appreciate the dark vibes and depraved lyrics but overall the vocals and instrumentals weren't really doing it for me. I will say I appreciated it more when I turned the volume up a few notches. Them Bones, Rooster, Dirt are good. Angry Chair is a funny song title. Feel like I need to develop a heroin addiction and drive around in a rusty car to really get into this album.

Don’t really like hard rock so I had low expectations, but those vocals went kinda dummy. Had me sitting at work at 10 am on a Wednesday wanting to kill myself, but in a good way.

I'm fully shocked at how good Dirt is. As expected, the slower, acoustic cuts lost me a little. In more of a surprise, Would? didn't do much of anything at all. But the rest of the album is extremely good, a metallic take on grunge which affects me much the same way Skunk Anansie's funk did at first blush. The choice to integrate doomy sounds was inspired, and the writing I caught, especially on Rooster and the title track, hit hard.

Definitely, not my cup of tea. Almost an hour of an album where every song sounds similar? In my humble opinion, they could have shortened the length of the record. Everybody is talking about the memorable riffs of the first three songs, but for me they weren’t memorable at all. I’ve just listened to them and they didn’t get stuck in my head. Appreciate the effort, although I do not quite understand why it is considered a masterpiece. Best songs (for me): Dirt, because it sounds slightly different from the rest, mostly at the beginning; and God Smack, because of how the singer brilliantly plays with his voice. Worst songs (for me): the first seven, from Them Bones to Junkhead.

1992 was a crazy good year for music, and Dirt is a strong contender for best album of 1992. Every song on Dirt is a banger, there arent ANY weak tracks. Its also one of the clearest "cries for help" you'll ever hear. 5/5

A classic. Bought this on cd when I was in middle school. Not a bad track on this album

Okay, so I've never heard this album before apart from "Rooster." I'm immediately struck by the interesting timing of "Them Bones," which has this kind of syncopated rhythm on both the guitar and the drums. It's almost kind of funky. Quickly we've moved onto "Dam That River," which has some great vocal harmonies. Again, some really fascinating rhythmic choices all over the place that almost evoke old blues tunes. "Rain When I Die" -- again, really incredible rhythms going on. Some reverby, tonal explorations on the guitar. Impressed with the lyrics on this track -- this song could totally be covered and done in different styles. This album seems to be a personal reflection on a rough emotional situation (considering most of it is about drugs). Moving to "Down in a Hole," which sounds a lot like a straight Metallica ballad. A lot of the songs on this record are confessional pieces from a powerless and downtrodden individual. This track is essentially the thesis statement of the record, painting for us the sordid portrait of our narrator. "Sickman" --another funky situation with some tempo changes. At this point in the record, I'm starting to get a stomach ache. I feel as if I can only hear so much about a guy wanting to die. What's tethering me (somewhat) is the interesting musical changes that sound almost bluesy in origin. I can see why folks loved this record even if the content is a bit rough around the edges and in the center. Let's see what Jerry Cantrell, the primary songwriter on this album, has been through. Alright so AIC is from Washington (no doubt), and Cantrell is often called "the Riff Lord." His dad was a veteran and his mother was a musician. He liked Gregorian chants. His parents seemed to be divorced and he lost in mother at a young age. I suppose that's pretty rough. "Rooster" - speaking of Cantrell, this song is about his dad, and happens to be the only one on this record that I know. Let's be real, the main riff on this song is really tasty, and yet it's used so sparingly. Didn't realize this but Layne Staley, the singer, was already in a band called Alice 'N' Chains when Cantrell heard him play one of his last concerts with them. "Junkhead" - gosh I'm getting tired of the drug stuff, but the music is nice! It seems that Staley passed of an overdose in 2002. That makes this album even more haunting. There's about 5 songs left. There's a great excerpt of a review that says: "It's all in the music." My stomach ache, fatigue, and haunting feeling is all in the weird time signatures and dissonant harmonies. "Dirt" -- the eponymous track. Struck by his incredible voice but that's all. "God Smack" -- starting to get a bit bored by these last few tracks. There's some fun energy in the chorus (?) of this one. I like how he's experimenting with some vocal acrobatics in this (the falling-down-the-steps vibrato thing he has going on), but that's the end of the intrigue on this one. Again, the lyrics get a bit depressing and samey. "Untitled" - just a little "Iron Man" interlude thing. "Hate to Feel" - Feeling bored by this point. Not so much by the music, again, but by the content. I'm out!

Amazing that an album so angsty and introspective can be so listenable. Amidst all the gloom there is some serious musicianship going and a tightness and structure to the music that avoids the excesses, speed and maximalist sound of equally gloomy traditional heavy metal, say. I kind of dug it.

I grew up on 90's grunge and it is by far my favorite genre of music. Of the big 4 (AIC, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden), I'd rank AIC as my 3rd favorite. I like the dual vocals of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. It's a shame that the same addictions that fuelled such powerful lyrics and themes of their songs ultimately led to the deaths of multiple figures in the grunge scene. This album is packed with hit after hit. I would say that this is their best album.

I'm bringing a lot of baggage to this, because the guitar tone reminds me so much of early 2000s guitar center line 6 amp drop d shredding. The harmonies are good, but I find them a little grating (which is weird, because I love X's grating harmonies). Again, this negative review is a me-problem.

Grungy like I expect from Alice in Chains. Mostly newer songs to me with a couple old classics I knew.

yawn - This watered down era of "metal" is a bit of a shame. Sleep formed around this time, providing a great grasp on what metal should sound like. Commit or don't try at all, simp. The 90's gave us great new music - hip hop, house, techno, Brit pop, grunge/metal/punk in Nirvana... This is just lame, empty version of metal - maybe accessible however not good, per se.

The album is grunge music. Some of the songs were familiar. The problem with grunge is always the vocals. I do not care for the singing on grunge albums and this holds true on this album. Vocals aside the music is decent. The album is between a two and a three. I will round down.

Really great album throughout and hits hard. "Down in a Hole" is the best song on the album, IMO. 9/10.

A grungy slice of rock - Didn't really know what to expect and in the first few seconds my heart sank, thinking I was going to get an incomprehensible shouty racket - but was quickly shown to be wrong. This has some great tones and musicality, and a soulful voice. Decent.

Pure, unadulterated grunge. It tends to start to fall into all the same tempo, but I suppose for smackheads it feels like it's blasting along. Best Tracks: Them Bones; Junkhead God Smack;

Not generally into this shade of the rockified mostly-metal and it really wasn’t what I was looking for when I listened to this. Just all the portentous, self-important singing and preponderance of heavy-handed chunka-chunka guitar.

The darkness and pain at the core of this album emanate aggressively outwards. It grabs you in a vicelike grip and doesn’t let go, immersing you in a world of unbearable raw agony, even after the album is over. It lives in the exact point of intersection between metal and grunge. It’s a tragic listen when you’re already very familiar with Layne Staley’s unfortunate story. But it is ultimately cathartic. And it fucking bangs. Would? is my all-time favourite AIC song; the way it builds is fucking flawless. And it closes the album perfectly. Goddamn magnificent album.

I know it’s grunge and that’s it. I’am a bit if a newbie to grunge only knowing nevermind and ten before this but still lets see how it is: The album starts with the song them bones, arguably a strange song to open off an album but still a good song with a killer guitar solo. Dam that river is quite good, really choppy guitars, and another good solo. Does show how good the singing is for what it’s meant to be. Rain when I die has these really strange guitars, not too sure if it works to be fair, the intro is a little long but I know longer ones. The song is alright, it has a nice chorus which really complements the guitars. The short bridge is cool too. Down in a hole slows down the pace of the album significantly which is good as it shows the verity of the band. It’s really good though just not one that will probably stick out in the future. Stickman is another slower one it’s cool there is an angrier bit as well but it dwells in the slower sludgier side honestly what a song! Rooster is good too, really slow and great lyrics another favourite alongside stickman! Junkhead goes back to the heaviness of the earlier tracks. It’s still fairly nice but just overshadowed by the rest of the tracklist. The title track has a really cool guitar riff so sludgy and heavy. I’am not too sure about the slowness of the singing on the verses on here but still passes overall for me. Next is god smack, the only reason why I’ve herd of this song before is because there’s a not very good band with the exact same name. The song itself is alright the singing is a bit odd on the verses but it’s good just like junkhead it isn’t as good as the others. Then is an untitled track it’s alright just some yelling and an alright lead in to… Hate to feel is one if the sludgier songs in the verses then completely breaks into a pre chorus that slowly leads into the simple but effective chorus. Great outro too. Now the penultimate track angry chair another sludgier song, one I really enjoyed! Great lyrics, great singing, great guitars all you need. The album ends in would?, a great closer not necessary a slow song but slow by their standards what a song honestly!,and the lyrics fit for the closer too! Yeah, I liked it has to be a 5/5 even with two weaker songs.

Not a fan

I really liked this one. Hadn't heard any Alice in Chains that I remember (maybe I have) but this reminded me of a mixture of Korn, Nirvana and maybe Pantera even. Cool hard rock and I think the vocals are what elevated it for me. There is a time and place for screaming and shouting but I liked that the singer here chose less of that so his words could come across.

Brutal for me to get through. Most of it isn't terrible, just very uninteresting. It's in this spot between a lot of styles that could sound good, but here it just falls flat. Keep Alice locked up if this is the best she has to offer. Favorite tracks: Rooster. Album art: She's in the dirt. Okay. 1.5/5

Overall a decent grunge/metal album by Alice in Chains. It's a very emotional album that deals with some heavy subjects including depression, pain, anger and war that are played out with such raw emotion. Best: Dirt Worst: Would?

Competent aesthetic and guitaring. Imagery from beginner's guide to metal ("Down in a hole / Feeling so small / Losing my soul"!!!). 0% chance of catchiness. Borderline embarrassing vocals.

Quality heavy grunge album

A kick-ass grunge classic with a focus on heavy subject matter lyraclly. Outside of some tracks in the middle, all of the songs here could pass as singles for how heavy and memorable they are. Favourites: "Them Bones", "Rain When I Die", "Down In A Hole", "Rooster", "Angry Chair"

Pretty good. I still prefer Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but I can respect this album a lot. I'll have to listen to it again to form a stronger opinion, but a 3/5 for now.

Ok....I'm doing my best to listen to albums that I wouldn't normally touch with a barge pole (as the expression goes) Got through half of it...unremarkable Seattle cock rock/grunge with lotsa drug references...it all becomes a bit samey and depressing. I like the tone of the lead guitar. Won't pursue further....(this probably means I'm going to get a Pearl Jam album at some point doesn't it. .?)

A grunge masterpiece.

A pretty damn perfect album

This album manages to combine some of the best hard rock melodies and prolific yet subdued vocals. Where metal is high octane and delivered in shots in rapid succession, what we have here is high octane delivered in a steady IV drip. This type of rock is some of the best to work out to, fast enough to maintain a disciplined rhythm, slow enough to keep focused on what is being done. Hard enough to be motivated, and soft enough to sing along without attracting too much judgment. Granted, none of the aforementioned qualities a great album make. Outside of the context of a great day in the gym, "Dirt" is simply a good album. It is heavy, it is melodic, the vocals are solid, the ingredients of a solid album are all here and they pull it off. The album ages well, as the reviewer was still in grade school when this album came out in 1992. First impression guess would have placed it much later, and while the sound of the album could sound a bit dated in 21st century, there is reason to really complain here.

Wasn’t a huge fan of music in this era but this is an exception.

I get the influence Alice in Chains had and all that but grunge/sludge from their era has never been my favourite. I don't hate it, I knew Them Bones and Rooster and Would? already, but I prefer what the genre eventually became and diversified into more than the band themselves.

It's good, and you can easily see what kind of music it comes from and where that genre's headed since, but it's not particularly remarkable on its own. Bottom end of a 3 for me.

Ja, eindelijk weer eens 5 sterren, het is jammer dat ik niet meer sterren kan uitdelen, want dit is echt een geweldig album waar ik veel herinneringen aan heb.

Geweldig album. Was in die tijd iets minder van Alice In Chains en toch meer van Pearl Jam en Nirvana, maar nummers als Them Bones, Down in a Hole en Would? zijn echt fenomenaal.

Tja, niet de meest vrolijke of lichtvoetige plaat, maar wat een gewelsige energie en drive! Echt alles is raak. Fantastisch album, waar heel veel herinneringen aan vast zitten.

This rocks hard, but not thrashy. Solid and sensible. Epic feel to the songs. Good. A high 3.

Some good guitar playing but it also felt a bit detached from the songs themselves, which mostly feature unexceptional lyrics and so-so melodies. Decent production but the tracks do tend to plod in places.

Classic! Just listened through this album for the first time in ages a couple weeks ago. Alice in Chains were so great because they were a grungier, more metal inspired grunge band from the era. All these songs take me back.

First time I have listened closely to AIC, haven't heard this album before and somewhat surprised. The mix of Heavy metal/Grunge was not as disturbing as I thought it would be probably because of the quality of the vocal harmonies of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell that , at times, to my ears had a Steely Dan type quality to them. Some good songs on this album, my favourites are "Rain When I Die" "Junkhead", "Angry Chair" and "Would" which to me is reminiscent of Nirvana at their height. Not a great Heavy Metal/Grunge enthusiast but I can see the positives in this Album

Man, I hated AiC growing up, but as an adult, this album has got to be one of the high points for grunge. I've always been more of a Soundgarden man than a Nirvana man (and don't even think about bringing up Pearl Jam), but this ranks up there with some of Soundgarden's best.

I'm not a big fan of the grunge, but this album is quite nice- it even has some metal overtones. 4/5

I don't consider myself a huge grunge fan, but this is pretty solid. Consistent record overall.

I've heard this band's name for a long time but honestly have no idea if I'd ever heard anything by them. It's a familiar sound, of course, due to the few years leading up to this album's release and the several years that followed with all sorts of bands being lumped in -- fairly or unfairly -- that mushy category of "grunge." So, I put in some effort to remove all those connotations and just let myself listen to the album as its own work. Overall it's not really my style, but I can appreciate how tightly they play. A little too much yelling for my liking, and I'm sure it's just my own biases getting in the way, but they sound to me like some guys trying just a wee bit too hard to be dark and brooding. I know that's not open-minded of me -- I don't know anyone in this band, so for all I know this is a super-accurate reflection of who they are as people and artists -- but I can't shake that feeling, sorry, folks.

Damn this has so many good songs on this. Them Bones is sUCH a good opener.

4.0 - All the hits off this record still grab me with their intricate guitar work, soaring vocals, surprising harmonies and hooks. I like some of the deeper cuts that I wasn’t as familiar with, especially “Dam That River.” A couple of the late-middle tracks, “Dirt” and “God Smack”, seem to keep pounding in themes of drugs and despair, and I find myself lulled by too much of the same. But “Angry Chair” and “Would?” round out the album perfectly.

1001 Albums Generator Day 6 I used to talk about music late into the night with the friend who’d lent me Crooked Rain, while sharing a bottle of Hennessy he’d drunkenly splashed out on while walking back from a night out. One time, we watched Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged session, while he told me what had happened to Layne Staley. It’s a powerful show, but it felt like rubbernecking. Even by 1996, he looked broken, hunched over his lyric sheet, with Jerry’s sweet harmonies seemingly covering for his frailty as much as enriching his melodies. That performance aside, I think of Alice in Chains as one of several hard rock bands erroneously lumped in with grunge, despite having no connection with punk and because they were contemporaries who shared the yarling vocal style and lack of glamour. I’m not a big fan of the art=pain idea. The fact he was really hurting isn’t enough to make it good. If you divorce the music from the tragic biography, there’s not much in it to convey the depth of feeling, so I’m left with little more than the thought that these guys have spent a lot of time practising licks. I don’t mean to criticise them for proficiency or for being show-offs (what else is a rockstar supposed to do if not seek attention?); their weakness is in the gap between the emotion they want to convey and how they go about it. It reminds me of kids who had mundane lives in term-time but were full of stories of the amazing adventures they had during the summer when no-one else was around. Alice in Chains aren’t fantasists, but they’re similar in one sense: because they’re annoying it’s easy to miss that they really need to be liked and this is how they’ve learned to seek affection. It comes across like someone showing you a fresh wound on their wrist and then doing a kickflip. They aren’t ready to be honest about what they want and aren’t ready to receive it if offered. I also dislike the production. Given that I quite like the Unplugged show and the way Layne and Jerry’s voices sound together, I can’t help wondering how I’d feel about this album if it had been recorded by Albini. I want someone to sharpen and dry out the sound, making the drums kick like a pissed off mule against a wooden gate, rather than someone trying to do as much damage as they can to a tin shed with a sack of fish. I want it to swing rather than plod. Basically, I want it to be either In Utero or Sleep’s Holy Mountain and it just can’t.

I’ve always been a bit afraid of Alice In Chains. (Rightfully so.) 3.5

OVERALL I liked this one a lot! I think it's similar to a lot of stuff I listened to when I was smol Chlo, so there's a bit of nostalgia in there for me, but I think it's a good version of what it is (if that makes sense??) Somehow I missed Alice In Chains when I was in my grungy phase...lets go Them Bones: c r u n c h y (also did NOT age well in the context of Layne Staleys death aaaaaaa don't Google it its bloody tragic) Rain When I Die: I like the melody in the chorus where he goes \"I think its gonna raaAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIyaaaiyaaaaiyaaaaiyaaaaainnnnn\" Down In A Hole: props for rhyming \"hole\" with \"small\" Sickman: really like the twisty time change (not sure this song needed to be as long as it is though, it's getting a bit repetitive now) Rooster: I'm a sucker for an intro with this floaty guitar effect on it (what's it called?? Music people help pls??) ooooo I also like this guitar about 3 mins in that goes WHA WHA WHA WHAAAA (I did listen to the rest of the album eventually but I didn't write as I went)

An interesting experience re listening to this album now I don’t dye my hair and am reasonably mentally healthy.

I haven't listened to this in maybe 7 or 8 years and wasn't sure how it would hold up... ooh boy it holds up. Dirt is certainly the right word, everything about this is pure grit and filth The swaggering riffs! The dense, enveloping vocals! The sheer power of the lyrics and songwriting! Is it grunge? Is it metal? Who cares - it absolutely slaps

I've never heard anything by Alice In Chains, all big hits and deep cuts included. I've just been aware of them as key players in grunge and metal of the 90s, so was interested to see what "Dirt" had in store. It's definitely a guitar album: Jerry Cantrell is a colossal presence, unleashing sludged out riffs, chromatic runs and furious leads all over the record. But an album can rarely hold complete attention with guitar wizardry alone: the songs themselves need to stand up too. Opener "Them Bones" is energetic but hardly inspiring: a cutthroat riff, howling vocals and lyrics soaked in apocalyptic self-pity. The rest of the album veers between up-tempo palm-muted metal riffs and cloying, doom-laden refrains (within the same song, a little awkwardly, in "Sickman"). One of my main takeaways, though, is that "Dirt" is more melodic than I expected. The chorus of "Rain When I Die" is soaring and titanic, punctuated by long sustained notes and manages to stand out from the rest of the album. The album also features unabashed harmonies that I didn't expect, whether in the vocals or lead guitar ("Hate To Feel", intro of the strong ballad "Down In A Hole"). Overall, the sonic texture we are left with is heavy, weighty and dark, but there's more to it than grunge's reputation had me believe. It's produced like arena-rock in technicolour: vast, expansive, like the desert landscape depicted on the cover. "Rooster" is the emotional peak, showcasing both sides of the band without being too heavy-handed: it builds very well through a falsetto harmony intro and first verse before the wall of guitars crashes in after the two minute mark. While it was nice to find myself enjoying elements of many of the songs, it wasn't enough to redeem the album for me completely. "Dirt" is much too long, and several of the tracks start to merge together after a while. There were very few stand-outs by the second half: instead, each riff growled into the next like a huge cloud of dirt. I can appreciate why fans of the grunge genre may enjoy this, but it isn't for me. With a lot of editing and a little less self-seriousness, this could have reached up to 3 stars- it's unlikely I'll be seeking it out again.

3.5/5 Dark, distorted, and depressing but a good listen if you’re in the mood for it. Knowing the background of “Rooster” breathes some life into a song heard way to many times on the radio, though it doesn’t exactly fit thematically with the rest of the album. The story of drug addiction and it’s consequences told through the series of tracks from “Junkhead” to “Angry Chair” is powerful. Staley’s vocals, while a bit nasally at times, are strong and fit the album. Fav Tracks: Them Bones, Down In A Hole, Would?

Too much metal for me.

Interesting. Not a huge fan, but this was much more listenable than expected. Enjoyed the slower songs, cringed a bit on the harder. Seems they never quite reached heavy metal, but we're still raw and a bit unrefined. I want to give 3.5 stars, but thought "will I listen to this again"? 3 stars.

Loved every second of this album. Always thought Alice in Chains would be too heavy for me and didn't give them a chance, but this was the perfect blend of eerie, dark, intimate, and foreboding. Just truly fucking epic and awesome. This is the kind of album I had hoped to discover through this platform

A strong sophmore album from one of the main architects of 90's grunge. The songs have a visceral tone and rhythm anchored by charged vocals from Layne Staley. Although it moves the genre forward, there aren't any major singles that really stick with you as a listener, and those that do are among the final tracks.

You would think someone who likes Pearl Jam as I do would also like this, but I've never been a fan. Something about the vocals and the style of guitar playing. Similar to the reasons I don't like Metallica. I can see the appeal of this for some, but not for me. 2 stars.

First time listening to this album in full. Very dark and heavy grunge album. Enjoyable and deserves to be on the list but don’t think it’s one I would come back to, more likely to play Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

It’s Alice In Chains!

Alice In Chains is somewhere in the ballpark of Metallica or Tool, but not quite as good as either of them. Rooster is the standout track, but they’re all absolutely fine and I’m not mad or excited or anything.

This album is a HUGE part of my late teens/early 20's. The one-two punch of Them Bones then Dam That River might just be my favourite opening to an album ever. Then it just keeps going. So many incredible tracks here, where both the playing AND songwriting are immaculate. One of the best rock albums ever. Absolutely loved revisiting this behemoth.

Too slow, too long and very samey. It's also kinda generic, the only song I'd heard before was Rooster (and possibly Would?, but I didn't make it that far), but I felt like I'd listened to these songs hundreds of times before. Some of it is catchy and I guess that, along with the familiarity is why people like this album/band, but I can't get into it.

This is one that I was excited to listen to as I am typically a big fan of music from this time period/genre, but it unfortunately just didn't do much for me. It started somewhat strong with the opening track (one I have definitely heard before), but it just became more and more dull throughout the VERY long listen. Rooster was the only song that stood out immediately because it was a little more upbeat/emotional than the others. Nothing impressed me instrumentally as far as guitar and rhythm parts go, and I did not enjoy the lead singer's nasally voice for the most part. I find that this pales in comparison to the energy and passion from other grunge acts that were performing at this time (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc.). I can understand why this might have been popular back then, but I can't help but think of it as boring now. 2/5.

Never had this one back in the day but it was in the air. They have a very recognizable and consistent sound. Brings me back to that era but that's about it.

Helt ok rockalbum, väldigt tungt, metaligt, mörkt, grungeigt och heroinigt. Lite för tungt för min smak, och oftast ganska tråkigt. Men absolut inte dåligt. Några feta gitarrsolon dyker dock upp här och var. Kommer troligtvis inte återvända till det här bandet speciellt ofta. Fastnade mest för de lite lugnare låtarna, som Down in a Hole och Rooster. Titelspåret Dirt är bra, alldeles lagomt mycket metal och låter lite som Black Sabbath. Även avslutningsspåret Would? är bra. Bästa låt: Down in a Hole.

Cantrell and Staley are the single best 2-man combo in music, and this album is their peak (except maybe Facelift or Jar of Flies, depending on the day). 5/5.

This heavy rock (metal) has never been my cup of tea. One or two redeeming songs I thought.

I remember vaguely this time, my older sister and my youngest aunt use to be heavily into grunge (is this grunge? Is this metal?) and I did not liked it that much (I was 6 tho). I like it now better but I get tired of it quickly

Love the singles from this, always have. As a whole album it's all a bit one-note and very druggy. You could see why Layne Staney went the way he did, the guy was obsessed!

More of a mix between hard rock and and metal than grunge to me but rocks in any case. Definitely built around the lead singer's vocals and lyrics, rest of band is adequate but not much ground breaking materials. Always liked "The Rooster" but a very consistent album beyond that.

I'm learning that my 90s instinct was not wrong. I knew of this album. I'd heard "Would?" and quite liked that. But I steered well away from the album. Listening to Dirt now, it's really full-on, the loud Jerry 'n' Layne's loud chiming voices powering in unison, emphasising things that don't need emphasis. At times there's a camp delight to the lyrics, the earnest adolescent subject matter. But the whole album was a lot to consume in one sitting and it doesn't inspire a repeat listen.

Not as in your face as I expected. Some reasonable stuff but plenty of rather gnawing industrial stuff.

Solid, powerful and dark.

Solid 90s grunge album with a surprising amount of variation in the guitar licks and song structures. Some tinges of 80s grandstanding and the mix bring the LP down a bit, but not enough to prevent a relisten.

I can tell this is a good example of a genre that I'm not particularly fond of. Innit.

Q: what sets Nevermind (and, perhaps, Ten) apart from the rest of the Grunge crowd? A: It’s pretty hard imagining an R n B cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. This is not a diss of 90s RnB, much of which I liked. The point is that much of it, and 90s HipHop, was producer-driven brilliance. So too Grunge, but lacking the brill bit. The drums on Dirt are fucking fantastic, the guitars intriguing, and Layne Staney’s voice would carry anyone for an age. But it’s at least 60% producer wizardry, isn’t it? (If I were more committed to this task, I’ll search out the demos for this. But there’s only so much time in the world…) Imagine SWV or Aaliyah hitting Would? :)

Killer. Several great hits and pretty much every other song holds up well. A lot of them do sound similar, but that's really my only criticism... And what's wrong with that when they rock so hard?

4.5 for sure. So many good tracks on here and pretty much the quintessential grunge sound.

A relentlessly HEAVY album. Emotional. Unrelenting. Uncompromising. Maybe too much for a single sitting but it's raw emotion. In that way it reminds me of Joy Division' Closer. Unfortunately I don't find the music nearly as compelling, so the most I can give it is 3.5 stars

Very late to this and enjoyed more than I thought I would. But some of it sounds like Queensryche on second listen so that drops it a star.

I remember being scared of Alice in Chains when I was a kid, and having listened to it now, I was right to be scared. This is dark stuff, but I can appreciate them so much more now. Drugs suck. Them Bones is a perfect opening track. Really great work on that song. Sets the tone, awesome licks and the chorus is solid. Dam the River is an angry song. Then Rain When I Die is one bummer of a song. It could be taken to mean that he'll die right be fore the "rain" that could have saved him. Or it could just grunge angst about death and rain and darkness. As I read, I see that the two main songwriters, Jerry and Layne had a tumultuous relationship to say the least and Layne tended to write the darker, sadder, drug related stuff, and Jerry wrote about girls. Also, a girl named Demri apparently had quite a grip on Layne in some way. Down in a Hole sounds like a Layne song, and it's excellent. Great rock song that has elements of grunge, ballad, and alternative styles. As I write this I discovered I am wrong and Jerry wrote this about a girl named Courtney, but Layne singing it certainly fits his persona. Oof, Sickman is a drug song. Jesus, to be so aware of your addiction and express these thoughts only to inevitably fall victim to them is just so tragic. This song is so segmented; I think the idea here is to mirror the manic wildness of the high and then follow it with the self-loathing low afterwards. The video for "Rooster" tells you everything you need to know. Very important song for the band, and one that makes you think about war, parents, life, everything. Junkhead - another drug song, but a totally different take than Sickman. Sickman can be seen as a metaphorical journey, but Junkhead is on one hand an honest account of a user and on another an admittance of helplessness. Either way, it's dark as hell. What I did just read though makes this album amazing. A theory is that Junkhead, Dirt, God Smack, Iron Glad, Hate to Feel, and Would? are all an interconnected mini-concept album on the cycle of drugs. Listening to it that way made for a hell of a trip, and if it is indeed the point of this final suite, it makes the album far more epic.

I never liked too much of Alice in Chains. No good reason for it, but never liked it. This album showed to me the reason: It's the same song for 1 hour! It's not absolutely bad, normally I like this 90's feeling, but the exact same song for 1 hour is too much 90's for me.

Very grueling in the right ways. Gritty, Angry, frustrated. Missing the pump up to a 5, but a damn fine mood album.

This was actually pretty good! Like, really good! I was fully prepared to loathe it but yet, I enjoyed it. The singer has this gutteral voice that is just perfect for the licks and hits the album gives you! It’s really not going to be for everyone though, but hey ho! I thought it was pretty fucking cool!

I have always needed a great excuse to listen to this album and here we are! Well, I’ve got to say, I loved this album. It’ll definitely be on high rotation.

I'm not sure what it is that I'm supposed to like about this album. If asked, I'd say I like grunge but perhaps the truth is that there are a few grunge bands I liked but that's where it started and stopped.

The 90s to me just seemed way too late to be starting a metal band, though I guess since they're from Seattle they were officially part of the grunge movement. The harmonies are a nice twist, it makes them sound a bit southern rock-ish, if that's your cup of tea.

Somehow I missed out on this band during their heyday. I got into the other bigger ones from the Era (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden) and must have figured I was all set. But I saw Singles a million times and knew "Would" from that movie. It's bizarre, I love Nirvana and Pearl Jam and like some other grunge acts. But this one for me is just OK. Two good songs.

Wow this is so emotional

This is pretty great and wished I'd heard it when I was younger; heavier than I was anticipating (sort of a sludge metal/grunge hybrid) with some absolute monster riffs - the opening 1-2-3 of Them Bones, Dam That River and Rain When I Die is unstoppable. Being an hour-long album largely about drug addiction with pretty grimey production, it can often be a bleak and difficult listen - especially knowing the eventual tragic fate of the lead singer Layne Staley. It may have been better being slightly shorter, but I honestly don't know what I'd cut - in isolation, there's not really a bad track here and it does flow very well. A strong 4/5. Favourite tracks: Them Bones / Dam That River / Junkhead

I could write lots about Alice in Chains. Been listening to them since I was... 11? Listening to this album in full, as an adult... Holy crap, the content is a new level of heavy. Some seriously strong music here, classic Alice in Chains, amazing vocal harmonies, hugely influential album.. Okay I'll stop. A 4 but not 5 as I don't think this is their strongest album, but it is a classic.

To look cool to anyone over the age of 40, i turn my nose up at Alice in chain when they are on a festival line up and to anyone under the age of 20 i dont have to justify anything to them because they cant possibly know anything about anything before they were born and if they try to claim they know anything about the years before they are born you just use the "you was not there" defence! because you are not letting anyone younger than you to claim anything that is yours or have an opinion but all that aside, With Alice and her incarceration possibly? or maybe she just needs to come back at Christmas and make an old friend of her change their ways?...Anyway when Alice comes on with her chains and throws out "Them bone" i am taken back to 1990s San Andreas and i quit enjoy my self...sipping on my space wine hidden in F&F jacket. Then after they are done, i complain about them and pretend to to like AC/DC because....reasons

An album like Dirt is catnip to critics because the music seems to match the life experience of its creators, which gives them an opening to talk about personalities instead of music. And sure enough, Dirt is relentlessly queasy, claustrophobic and tortured. But I can say that without having listened carefully to the lyrics--it's all in the music. How does Alice in Chains pull it off? They create disorientation through odd and shifting time signatures and sections which border on the atonal. The queasiness comes from guitarist Jerry Cantrell's guitar tone, which is typically swathed in reverb and flange, and the almost melismatic singing style of Layne Stanley, which is compounded whenever he doubles or triples his vocals in parallel voicings. The claustrophobia is achieved by allowing almost no empty spaces in the music. Even in the quieter moments, Dirt is a non-stop assault. When you add in the killer hooks from singles like Would?, Rooster, and Angry Chair, and you have the recipe for one of the great rock albums from the grunge era.

Rooster and Would were big songs for me back in the day, but generally Alice in Chains have a kind of creepy vibe to me.

Quite enjoyed this actually. Never really known what Alice in Chains were about but I guess they sit somewhere between Bon Jovi and Gun n Roses. The sort of music a tattooed, Alice band wearing Sergio Ramos would listen to before a big match to get himself pumped up.

Alice In Chains are another one of those bands that I *should* be massively into, but for whatever reason it just doesn't stick. Happily enjoyed listening through the album, but didn't find anything particularly memorable and there wasn't anything I particularly want to revisit. 5.5/10 ⚽ Euro player: Declan Rice vs Croatia. Did the job. Wasn't memorable. Hope the next one is better.

This album should be in my wheelhouse (heavy 20th century rock), but it is not. Maybe it’s the nasally, whiny vocals. Maybe it’s the ‘I’m more depressed than you’ lyrics, but whatever it is, it’s not for me.

This album drags on and is honestly so dull in its songwriting. Every song has the same depressing guitar tone and tempo, and the singing is irritating. When you compare this to Nevermind, they are worlds apart in quality of songwriting, despite being labelled as the same genre.

Maybe it's because I was frustrated today but damn I've always thought alice in chains was overrated, but really enjoyed the tracks of this album that weren't always on the radio when I was growing up. Hits still were exhausting, but the stuff in between was way better than I ever would have expected!

That whole album is tops

*Them Bones, Down in a Hole, Dirt* I'm finally starting to get Alice in Chains; in the past, I generally would switch radio stations whenever they came on. Thematically and sonically heavy. I both love and hate the "sludge metal" sound that "Dirt" helped create.

I love the speed of the drums and the guitar work is excellent. The album starts great with "them bones", " dam that river" and " down in a hole". I'm not a fan of "sick man" the guitar is too screechy and is seems to lose its vocal harmony. "Rooster" picks it up again but it loses the harmony and goes back to noisy guitars until "angry chair" and "would?" (Which ends the album). Great start and strong finish, but the middle is inconsistent. Overall good album with some great standouts.

Them Bones is the only song I know and want to continue knowing from this album. How come there are like 20 tracks here??? I had to tap out with 3 left.

apart from a few tracks at the beginning in the end, the middle part merged together and wasn’t particularly strong. this artist is definitely a great, loud and talented one but this album wasn’t much of those things at all.

Perfect album to celebrate Fat Riff Friday

A fuse of metal and grunge that brought Alice In Chains to the mainstream. For a mainstream record in the 90s though, this was a pretty stark and gnarly album. I do like Layne Staley’s voice and quite a few of the songs, but some of them just don’t have the memorability that I thought they might have. I still tend to prefer Nirvana and Soundgarden over AIC. Favorite song: Rooster Least favorite song: Hate to Feel

Opens up with a classic in them bones, and liked the first few tracks but then it just got a bit more sludge and wasn't too gone on second half

Muddy, moody and boring gunge.

Classic album from the grunge era. Excellent song writing with great melodies, harmonies, and heavy guitar sounds. The whole band sound fantastic on this record. Also one of the greatest opening riffs to any album, ever.

I really thought I was going to have more of a nostalgic feeling for this album than I did. There are some songs I really like. A lot of the other songs sort of run together. I will say that this album finishes very strong, with two classic Alice in Chains songs, though I think the album would flow better if they were located sooner rather than at the very end 3/5

the album cover makes me nervous and feels like it was directly ripped from my nightmare. album was pretty good though. i love "down in a hole". the album became more depressing as i read more about the lead singer.
