Reviews (page 14 of 14)

God, those vocals, those lyrics... "I feel so alone Gonna end up a big ol' pile of them bones" "Down in a hole, feeling so small Down in a hole, losing my soul I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied" Gave up on this one at Sickman. At least this list has made me realise I am really not a grunge guy.

yeah, meh, it's ok, highly charged rock innit! Imagine some of these tracks used for soundtracks in American movies. e.g. -5 punk bank robbers preparing for the heist of the century in the back of a Dodge van, dressed in vests one of them (Brad) is listening to Alice in Chains through a Walkman, tinny sound but loud enough for all the robbers (& viewers) to hear, then cue van wheel spinning away, dust everywhere with the track now in the forefront of the movie, then music fades and your onto the next scene; inside an orderly bank with pleasant honest folk going about their business with a twitchy security guard at the door (who you already know is going to get it!)

Grunge by numbers. Not getting any innovation, lacks distinctiveness or flavour. Could be pearl jam

not a fan

*no music, screaming and squalling instruments. Not easy listening to. Need to have negative star options

No thank you.

Not my style

Did not enjoy this. It’s the same ‘herm yarl’ things I generally don’t like about Niravana, Nickelback etc. Just doth not please mine ear.

Always a bad sign when music that's so busy still manages to be so dull - couldn't survive past 'Rain When I Die'.

I wanted to hate this. But I cleared my head and listened and gave it a real chance. Then I hated it. The end.

Dirt. That about sums it up.

This really irritated me

just wasn't my type of album.

Not my jam. Got bored quickly.

God I hate this so much. Would? is the only song that is halfway listenable. The rest is just shit

I know this is objectively a bunch of very talented musicians but as an album it is excruciating. If it was 30 minutes long I would have been thrilled. However, it is almost twice that long with nothing justifying its length. Definitely felt like I was in the Angry Chair for this one.

dogshit

I thought Alice In Chains were Metal trying to be Grunge back in the day, I still do. It's awful.

Another band that I want to like but just don’t. This album is a painful listen, which I think is what they were going for. It’s a perfect fusion of everything I dislike about both grunge and metal. Not for me.

If I was disturbed I would like this music. 1/5

Perfectly combines two genres I don’t like: grunge and metal. I can see how this is something people like, but I sure don’t. The longer I listened, the harder this became for me. A slog

Gross.

didnt like it when it was current rotation on the radio. still dont like it. maybe if they quit using drugs they could have written better

Not for me

Actively didn’t enjoy. Other bands have done it better, had better lyrics, songs and voices.

Eh, not my kind of music. Some of the songs had decent background music, but the singer was not my cup of tea. They're all talented, but it isn't my thing. Best song: Would?

Throw this album Down In A Hole with Them Bones and cover with Dirt. The lead singer is whining or yelling about some depressing topic on every song making this a poor listening experience. L = (0.8*s) the last song “Would?” actually bumped it up. J = (1.1*s) someone please explain why Dirt is on the 1001 Must Listen list, it’s near the top of the Too Long list.

Hated every second of this experience.

Not really my thing!! <3

I liked the parts with no guitars or singing.

not for me in the slightest. Hard to look past the lead singers delivery of every single line 'sung' Who ever the lead guitarist and bassist are where the redeeming quality of the record with no other redeeming qualities

Not for me. They kind of droned on

Another Metal album that bores me to tears.

Is it more tuneless than turgid, or more unsubtle than unrelenting. Hard to say but it's an insult to Alices everywhere.

I listened, talked about, and thought about this album all weekend long. I've been saying that I think I spend more time listening to the albums I don't like, than I do listening to the albums I know are an instant 5 stars for me. I need to listen enough to figure out why I don't like it, or if I can really justify a low rating. I've decided, after much consideration, to give this a 1. The curve has to bend somewhere, and I do not like this album. Wailing guitar, screaming, whining vocals. It's loud, it's all too much. Too much drum, too much guitar, too much vocal, not enough melody. When this music was popular I was still listening to my parent’s cassette tapes, and stuff like Boys II Men and En Vogue on the radio. Grunge wasn’t around me growing up, and I never journeyed myself that direction later in life. It’s hard for me to get in to this now, and without any 90s nostalgia it really is a miss for me. It's not a bad album, it's not unlistenable. This is just not my kind of rock n roll.

Nah. Still.

Preferred this sound when Black Sabbath was making it 20 years prior. 🤨👎

did not like

not my cup of tea

I gave up. I just can’t stand this band.

Väldigt tråkig rock, snälla inte mer.

I don’t like heavy metal

Really didn’t get on with this album. It’s felt relentlessly samey and far too long. Something about the production of the vocals and drums left me cold. The music sounds like some 80’s metal and the vocals are grungy but annoying and I found this really jarring.

Really not for me, dull and every song sounds the same.

I find this unlistenable and lacking any sense of genuine emotion.

grunge genre. i really dont like it. i have a headache today and this album is not helping!

Not for me

Teen angst şov

Dirt by name, dirt by review. God I hate late 80's early 90's sleaze rock.

Schrott! Weg damit!

I just found this rather boring. Every song sounded the same and they did nothing for me.

Better than Marilyn Manson, but that's not saying much.

If this is grunge, it explains why it never hit the mark with me. Sub-par heavy rock with no redeeming features. I flicked through the tracks here and definitely didn't feel that I was missing anything. Yawn.

Unlistenable. Shit. Poo.

Absolute, utter dog shit.

Every song is grungy and the same, my least favourite album ever.

dont like

I gave it a fair shake but this music is just not for me.

No, no, and no.

just really not for me can’t even finish it

Didn’t really enjoy this album.

🎧Butt rock

It's impossible to evaluate these records separate from my history (or non-history) with them. In this case, I remember the hits from the time. Kind of ok if they came on on the radio. Never felt the need to investigate the album because I figured I already knew what I was going to get there. And I was right. Sludgy riffs, lazy guitar solos and whine-y vocals. And the songs are so long and boring. Absolutely no regrets that I spend my time (and limited financial means) on Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. and Happy Mondays records back in the day.

Sludgy, dull and dreadful. I tried a second time on a new day but couldn't find anything redeeming and will happily never hear this again in my life. I don't hate grunge and at times I really like it as a genre, but this feels like it beds down into one chord progression, one guitar tone ('chug'), one tempo, all laid under that whiny, uninterested, reverb-laden drawl. Even the lyrics are utterly miserable when you can actually make them out.

Not a fan.

Found the vocals pretty annoying and the guitar style just not my thing. Sounded much more dated than other grunge albums we’ve been suggested - and man have there been a lot lately.

Derivative

Sorry just don't see the attraction of this.... :-(

This is not a favorite album/band of mine. Still don't like it much. I literally could not wait for this album to end. Aside from some good guitar licks, it all sounds the same to me. The parts where he yells lyrics are, for me, the part that I just can't get past (although I'm sure for some that's the best part). A few songs I could maybe listen to again - "Down in a Hole" and "Angry Chair"

Not for me.

Dirt I only know the name Alice in Chains, I don’t think I know any of their songs, and I do get all those alt rock, grunge and grunge adjacent bands, who are not Nirvana, from the early 90s mixed up. And, I think, with good reason, as this really is American early 90s heavy alt rock so generic it feels pointless. I always try to be generous with music that’s not my thing, trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who would like it, and sometimes there’s good drums or guitars and production, or moments of excitement, or a diverting melody, or some off kilter little bits, but with this there is nothing interesting at all. The songs are boring, the lyrics are boring, the music is boring, the production is boring. Maybe if you are a 14 year old boy fetishising heroin addiction this is good, but why not go to a local fort of Victorian Folly instead? I’m struggling to find any redeeming qualities. I thought the second listen might improve it, but it really didn’t. It’s not completely actively and offensively bad, in the way that The Cult album was, but it's characterlessness, earnestness, ponderousness and sense of self importance means it's actively and offensively boring, which in some ways is worse. Maybe The Cult broke the 1 star seal but this can’t be anything other than a tedious and wretched 1. 💉 Playlist submission. I don’t really care, so I’ll just choose Them Bones, purely as it’s the first track so I don't have to think about it further

I did listen just to be sure, but no — I still do not like Alice In Chains.

Nope. Hate it.

Sorry, didn't like it

Too hard and masculine.

Haaard pass

I have friends who swear by Alice in Chains. I literally cannot stay Layne Staley's voice.

Horrible stuff. The vocals are unbearably drudgy and there is so much swamp all over the music that the whole thing sounds terrible. It gave me a headache, and I was very disappointed.

Not for me.

Them Bones is a bit droning. Dam That River has the same problem. Droooning Lyyyriiiics. Rain When I Die is the worst culpris (so far?), especially the ending. Down In A Hole combines this horrible sound with slower emo music. Sickman is the same. I am the sickman sick of this. On Rooster even the guitar is infected with lethargy. Angry Chair has a mini guitar solo that is not developed. Finally it is over. I understand that they are decent musicians but this is not my thing. No epic guitars make up for this horrible “singing”. Terrible lyricism. 1/5

Das Album klingt nach Teenage Anxiety und das brauche ich echt nicht mehr. Es reicht mir, dass ich diese Zeit selber durchleben musste. Da muss ich nicht noch auditiv an diese Gefühle erinnert werden.

I see what’s happening here but there’s just way too much of it. I would be ok with never listening to this again. 😃

I was hesitant to listen but it was more tolerable than I anticipated at first. I did get bored by the 5th track and I had a hard time just getting through the rest of the album.

Hard pass

This was a struggle for me. The band wasn’t doing anything special. The lead sjj in beer was doing something unique and impressive, but not pleasing. The lyrics were sad and angsty and often left me wondering if the dude was ok. Not a single track struck me well.

did NOT like

Nope, nope nope, no NO

not4me

I'm not really a fan of Alice in Chains... let's see if listening to a full album of theirs will chain my mind. The lead singer's voice is one that I used to mock when I would jokingly sing 90s/2000s rock. Man this is so bland/boring/generic and the singing is often nasally and whiny to the point where I just can't take it seriously. On 'Sickman' they did a spoken word breakdown using the Lord's prayer that was just awful. Man this is not good stuff. Can I give them a 0? Why are all of these songs so long? They don't go anywhere or do anything interesting.

Don't recognize any of these masterpieces....too hard for me

Standard rock. Uninspiring.

Nope. None of this.

Grunge I don’t like.

I was barely on the edge for grunge...I did not love Pearl Jam as much as everyone else and I remember hearing Nirvana in San Francisco on Duncan Street in1992 - smells like teen spirit

Horrible noise.

I like rock and metal up to a point, but couldn't see anything special about this album. By side 2 (as I call it) I was wanting it to end. I guess they were holding their own at the time, but from my own limited knowledge I'd say they weren't as interesting as Nirvana, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam. I can't claim to be an expert but I didn't get it.

Initial reaction: oh God, do I have to? That said, not as terrible as I’d feared but absolutely not for me. And I was glad when it was over.

I just don’t appreciate this genre so will leave it at that.

Dark, angry , pathetic

Krach. Kann weg.

Boring - all the songs sound the same and there is nothing that stands out. I obviously do not get the attraction to the slow long songs

Grunge, with intelligible lyrics. Consistent collection of songs.

Not my kind of listen.

Hard metal rock. No thank you. This isn’t music.

Only listened to a bit. Not my thing sorry

Ein einziger Klangteppich, von White Noise nicht zu unterscheiden. Keine Ahnung was Leute darin sehen oder hören.

UGH. the worst music and way too dark for my taste

Nicht mein Geschmack.

ai nao terminei de ouvir muita preguiça

harter Rock. Grauenvoll

1. them bonez - 0 2. dam that river - 0 3. rain uuhen i die - 0 4. douun in a hole - 1 5 zickman - 0 6. roozter - 1.5 7. junkhead - 1 8. dirt - 1 9. godzmack - 0 10. hate to feel - 0 11. angry chair - 1 12. uuould - 2

I don't care for this genre. But this makes me want to listen to Johnny Cash cover albums.

Unlistenable for me

I think this is one many either love or hate, I’m the latter. I was very much into the 90s grunge scene and this band seemed to me for people who liked their grunge amped up with some heavier stuff. Never liked them in high school, and this album reminded me why. Seems almost like a generic hard rock band with generic songs. Lyrically offers nothing of importance. And I know it has no impact on the music, but I HATE the bands name!!!

are they ok

I TRIED MY BEST IDK WHAT TO SAY LMAO

Not for me

Teenage me would have loved this angsty and sometimes angry music maybe? Not so much now

Miserable album to get through. Same shit over and over. Belongs on that buzz ballads annoying commercial from early 2000s

Dull drones on

Good droning sabbath-inspired guitar work. I just can’t stand this type of singer. American power rock masculinity contest type of thing. It’s the same with pearl jam (even though I like Vedders later solo work), I just can’t get into it because of the singing style. A singing style that really plagues American rock since the 90’s. I previously stated that large parts of the 90’s Brit-rock wave leaves me cold. But I am starting to realize that the whole grunge movement (except for the aesthetics and nirvana) was complete garbage. I was a bit too young to appreciate it at the time and in hindsight it just seems terribly stale.

I have to say I went in not knowing much about this album. But I have to say it just wasnt for me on any level. Musicly if felt lethargic and seemed to drag its feet through the dirt (pun intended). I feel like there is other albums of a similar genre that do it better. I'm not angry, just disappointed.

3 in, not my cup of tea so far. Yea not something I’m really into. .8/5

To put It shortly, I don't like it

A really good example of how familiarity with something affects your appreciation of it. This isn’t really any different, and neither better nor worse, than Core by Stone Temple Pilots, or probably ten other minor league grunge albums. But I heard Core at the time and love it still, while this is my first go on this one and it’s unlistenable heroin grunge nonsense

I hate this album and I hate this band.

pas écoutable

Songs sound repetitive and boring with the same sounding chords and vocals Recognised the song rooster Sounds like something a construction site would have blaring

Not my thing... Just reminds me of GenX.

Bij de eerste 3 seconde was ik er al klaar mee, wat een Tyfus herrie!

Echt 3 keer niets dit

Leider wirklich absolut garnicht meine Musik

1 star. not my thing. Didnt even try to listen beyond 10 seconds.

not my thang

Don't ever want to hear this again

dinnut listen

I’ve come down with a terrible case of 90s rock shouts fuck this album

Not my cuppa tea

TIL I don't like Alice in Chains

this shouldn't be on the list

yawn - This watered down era of "metal" is a bit of a shame. Sleep formed around this time, providing a great grasp on what metal should sound like. Commit or don't try at all, simp. The 90's gave us great new music - hip hop, house, techno, Brit pop, grunge/metal/punk in Nirvana... This is just lame, empty version of metal - maybe accessible however not good, per se.

Horrible Nirvana rip offs, just sounds like someone singing while attempting to shit.

Not a fan

Competent aesthetic and guitaring. Imagery from beginner's guide to metal ("Down in a hole / Feeling so small / Losing my soul"!!!). 0% chance of catchiness. Borderline embarrassing vocals.

I've never liked metal in any form.

Shouty songs about (or vaguely related to) death and sadness and anger. That's it.

"Would" is good because it means that the album is over. 1

Too much metal for me.

Forçou demais a amizade nessa.

Dross.
