Reviews (page 5 of 7)
These guys were so hot and I never liked them. Fun at times I guess but otherwise mostly boring and formulaic.
One song smacks, one song strongly taps, the others fall flat
Peppy
I didn't know what to expect when I saw this album show up. It sounds like an album desperately trying to be mainstream pop, but due to how great early 2000s mainstream music is, it's not. Favorite Track: "Laura".
Well done. Not my vibe though
It was lively. I liked it but didn't love it.
Bit thin in places but good tunes generally. Shouldn't have gone anywhere near Comfortably Numb though, absolute shocker.
Fun but lacks something
Questionably essential but damn good fun for the most part. Take Your Mama is a genuine classic banger. Comfortably Numb is a confusing misfire. Everything else is somewhere in between, but Laura, Tits and Filthy/Gorgeous all solid as well.
# 531 : Scissor Sisters A solid debut — fun, but not flawless. Scissor Sisters delivers some energetic disco-stompers and playful flair, though it leans a bit too campy and eclectic at times. “Take Your Mama” stands out as the highlight. If you have to choose something : Take Your Mama Listened : 24/07/2025
This is fun. Not every song here is a winner, I didn’t particularly like Lovers In The Backseat, but the ones that are good definitely went in the playlist. The Comfortably Numb cover is fine, but feels incomplete without the guitar solos that make that song. Favorites were Take Your Mama, Mary, Tits On The Radio, and Filthy/Gorgeous.
👍
A little weird but I didn't hate it.
This feels a bit like what Steel Panther was trying to do. It's fun and I give them credit for covering a song and changing it a lot. Not sure why this is mandatory besides maybe the fact that no one else was doing something in this vein in the early 2000s. Sounds good. It's on that 2/3 line for me.
A well constructed homage to Elton John and or Disco. A fun energy, bar band quality. Not sure about this being required listening, but it's a solid album.
I'd give this a 3.5. I remember when it came out, and a lot of people at the record store I worked out loved it. I liked it, and it always reminded me of a modern take on Elton John, which is fine but nothing so monumental or revolutionary to me. I have a hard time bumping this up to 4 stars, as I just thing it is a little too simple for my tastes.
Empieza por todo lo alto, tres éxitos incluyendo la versión de Comfortably Numb. Sin embargo, no mantiene el nivel y el resto es correcto y divertido.
Really enjoyed some of the songs but found the ones I didn’t like to be boring. The bits I liked are fun and I would be happy for the songs to come on if I was out but I wouldn’t listen to it through as an album again. Fav song: Take Your Mama - also liked Mary Least fav: Comfortably Numb
So weird! Feel like these guys just made whatever they wanted to and sometimes that’s really good songs and sometimes it’s complaining that they can’t see tits on the radio! Wasn’t expecting to be screamed at :( Favourite song: Take Your Mama Least: Comfortably Numb
Correcto
A mixed bag album - liked some of it and disliked others, it’s just VERY silly. It’s also kinda disco which is very fun
Could be good, worth a relistem
Some good stuff
I’ve heard of them but they are interesting.
nice enough
So campy. I used to like their version of Comfortably Numb because it’s actually the first time I’ve gotten to know the song. But I must concede the Pink Floyd version to be superior. But in any case it’s a fun album of retro disco inspired rock tunes
You don't have to be fabulously gay to enjoy this album but it probably helps. Camp pop that has a couple of bangers but it can't keep up the pace. It has nods to 70's Elton natch, but they probably should've avoided that as how are you going to live up to those standards? Plus that cover of Comfortably Numb is one of the worst I've ever heard. Also, I could've sworn glitter came out of my speakers... Best Tracks: Laura; Take Your Mama; Filthy/Gorgeous
I don't know what to think about this album. It was a little busy. Interesting sounds. I did like a few of the songs though. I'll give it 3 stars.
Fine harmless fun
ok it turns out I’m just gonna do this as a track by track. If I missed a track *shrugs* this method came about half way through the album. Laura is an absolute banger to open with - I’m of the exact age for the Scissor Sisters being in my periphery, so I’m interested in how much I’ll recognise. Shit - Take Your Mama is great. Why can’t modern pop music be as good as it was when I was 12? Get the boffins on it. Ok - I think I’ve figured Scissor Sisters out by track 3. imagine if the BeeGees were good & gay? I’d forgotten the guys surname was Shears. Funny. Oh they’re actually named after Scissoring? bit blue. That could’ve put me off them if they weren’t good. ok Mary I thought was gonna be a dud. it reminds me of Angie by the Rolling Stones. Decent chorus. Not sure on the verse. yeah, fuck it. skipped. Lovers in the Backseat sounds like Flight of the Concords. take that as you will. Tits on the Radio - a swell bassline. what you love to see. Yeah, I’ll look to see if there’s a tab. didn’t realise Filthy /Gorgeous was them - banger tbf. Wire me up to a 2am festival silent disco & give me 8 pints please! Music is a Victim. I can see what they’re doing here and I don’t mind it. It’s got all the ingredients for me to like, but it is noticeably weaker than the previous few songs. That guitar solo won’t fool me! (The last 45 seconds! Gimme me of that though) Better Luck is a plodder. It Can’t Come Quickly Enough is very Live Aid. I will not be explaining this further. Return to Oz is fun. Was initially skeptical but it drew me on. Gets a bit Queen towards the end. You had to spoil it Scissor Sisters. I think overall, like a lot of albums of this era, the singles absolutely slam but it trails off a bit towards the end. I’ll listen to Filthy / Gorgeous regularly. 3 1/2. I listened to filthy / gorgeous again. That fucking guitar!!! cool me down.
So I've obviously heard Laura before, but I had to relisten to it as it went out of my head straight away. A bit like David Bowie and of course the nod to Frankie Goes To Hollywood makes sense. They seem like they'd be sick live. It's fine, it's no Mika.
Removed Album #13 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) Ayyyyyy! Back-to-back previously-listened-to-ers. Yesterday was Funeral and today is Scissor Sisters. After checking the list it appears that there are 37 albums I have already heard which have yet to be generated for me, so I'm doubtful that I will ever get a second back-to-backer again. Maybe I should boost those chances in the meantime. I'll pick one album out of the remaining 862 that I have yet to listen to and will give it a go tonight. If that album is recommended to me tomorrow, then it must be an act of fate and my crush will ask me out tomorrow and I will have the best week of my life and I WILL inherit the wealth of that kind Nigerian prince. In any case, I'm living on easy street - I only have to listen to this album once instead of the usual twice. I listened to this baby 3 years ago during a brief stint of going through my Dad's mostly-legal music collection. This belonged to the scandalous, illegally-downloaded pile. In the time since juvenile detention I haven't thought about this band at all. All I can remember is that there was a very unusual cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" and a generally unpalatable rock sound. My musical taste has evolved a lot since those halcyon days, so I'm down to give this album a reappraisal. "Take Your Mama" is the best song on the album. The songwriting and vocal performances are very dynamic and engaging. I like the instrumental as well. Very jumpy, which complements the off-the-wall energy of the song. "Lovers In The Backset" is another good cut. I like the psychedelic sound, especially on whatever the hell that percussive instrument is meant to be. The album admittedly sags down the middle. "Mary" and "Tits on the Radio" are songs that really drag their heels and blend together, though the album manages to come back with a solid final quarter. "Music is the Victim" is good - largely because of my strong affinity towards cowbells. "Better Luck" is the best offering of the latter tracks - a lot of strong and catchy hooks. So, the cover song. There's a virtue in going your own way when covering another musician (especially when the music is as high-profile as Pink Floyd), though I don't like this rendition. The vocals are among the weakest on the album and the tempo completely kills my enjoyment of the song. The instrumental is something I'm equally mixed on. The electronic tones that come in around the chorus are quite good, though the jittery, looping guitar really does not work for me and puts me on edge. I also have a strong emotional attachment to the original song. So what? Isn't a man allowed to FEEL???? So, why was this puppy removed from the list? I'll have to check the book. Prominent 80s influence. A polished debut album from promising musicians. "Comfortably Numb" charted as a single. I'm pretty down the middle on this album. In some respects It's admirable in how unconventional it is and in others it's pretty by the numbers and of-the-time. Scissor Sisters haven't produced a follow-up which is as critically or commercially successful as this album, though they appear to have maintained a pretty respectable following since their debut. I would probably snip this album too, truth be told. It's alright, though nothing I'd point to as essential listening.
Verrassend goed
Disco electro revivalist at their best….
Going through these albums always makes for an exciting time. Sometimes it's an album that you have and can't wait to hear it entirely again. Sometimes it's an release with a few songs that are on the radio and you are curious about the rest of the record. And sometimes it's a record and a band that you have never heard of before, which allows you to explore something completely new. This one fell in the last camp for me. The best way I can describe this album is diverse. From it's songs to the theming to the way I felt about it. It was all over the place. A microcosm of this experience for me was Filthy/Georgeous, which is rather aptly name considering my take on this album. This is straight out of the 70s and the lead singer's voice could have fit very nicely on any of those disco records of the time. This song is totally different than anything else on the album. Fun and cool at times, and yet totally derivative and plain at others. Simultaneously georgeous and filthy, much like different parts of this record. Some of the highlights for me were songs like Mary, a song that felt a bit to me like Robbie Williams was leading it, which is a testament to the lead singer's voice. He demonstrates a lot range on this and hits all the right notes. An excellent tune. Take Your Mama is a bit of mix of Better Than Ezra and Neon Trees (Laura gave me some NT feel too). It's a well constructed song, and demonstrates that they actually have a good amount of talent. On the other end, the inclusion of Comfortably Numb on this is a really strange choice. It's not that their take on this is awful, per se, it has some interesting elements. I guess it was a big dance hit in the UK (equally as strange). However, given how epic a song Pink Floyd's original is, their version massively pales in comparison, effectively making it nothing more than filler and it an instant skip on this record for me. Meanwhile, Tits On The Radio is just a bad song, with lyrics that are pretty dumb. My daughter and I got a good laugh out of it though. Music Is The Victim is a better song, but again their lyrics are just very inferior and relatively meaningless. You can see how they think they are being cheeky with this, but it comes off as very poorly thought out. I imagine them in a room thinking "what rhymes with shotgun" and then celebrating when they finally come up with . . . "dog run"! Yes, spectacular. In addition, bringing in various cities comes across as pretty trite. To be honest, I was thinking of making this album a 2, but the record is diverse, their talent is decent, and the lead singer’s voice is interesting. Also, the fact that I grabbed a few songs for my own personal library pushes it up for me. Can't put it higher than 3 though, as this compilation is a roller coaster, with some pretty high highs and very low lows.
So, you can create disco in 2005! Bravo, I guess. The music is enjoyable, but I didn't rally behind this too much. The intrigue of their take on the genre sent me back rather than propel me forward. Still, it was enjoyable to listen to.
One of the gayest sounding albums I've ever heard. Happy Pride Month this app said lmfao. I actually like a good portion of it. It is very fun.
it was fun!
This was fun
Glam rock with one foot in the 70s and one in the 2000s Horrible cover of Comfortably Numb.
Not bad, good
Laura // Take Your Mama // Filthy / Gorgeous //
Better than expected! Quite fun, danceable and easy listening. Track 2 and 4 even remind me of Elton John. Their cover of Comfortably Numb is atrocious, but I respect them for doing their own thing. Not something that will overflow my playlists, but it’s decent entertainment for a night
dancy and fun
Nah not really for me. Man, that Comfortably Numb cover almost made it a 2 star for me. But when it comes to covers, I usually appreciate the ones that try to make something new out of it rather than a straight cover. So while I appreciate the boldness of changing up the song, I really didn't care for it.
I remember Len booking us tickets to see Scissor Sisters in Benidorm in 2017. We turned up and were quite shocked that he’d booked tickets to a very different pair of Scissor Sisters than we expected. He swears he booked the wrong show. He did make us watch the whole thing though. 2.8
Was excited for this, because if you don’t think Take Your Mama is a flat out timeless banger you literally have no ears. But somehow the album just didn’t quite live up. Maybe not as fun and energetic as I expected.
While I still prefer the original version, I appreciate that they made their cover of Comfortably Numb their own. 3.5 Stars.
O.k. but besides the well known "Take Your Mama" nothing really remarkable on. Weak three stars. 2,5
I was really looking forward to this album. "I love the scissor sisters" I thought. "This album has some cracking songs". And then I played it. Hit, hit, hit...until it got slow. And a little dull. Don't get me wrong, still a good band, but maybe there's a reason only some of the songs are still regularly played today and some are forgotten. Or maybe I'm just being super critical and it's a fine album and I have the memory of a sieve. Who knows.
This is a great pop disco album, the second half drops off a bit, but it's still enjoyable... However that comfortably numb cover is abysmal. It sounds like a 12 year old kid made it on fruity loops. I hate it so much. I can't find a redeeming feature in it, it's like they made it too fast, too emotionless, too computerised, too shit. I've had the conversation loads of times and everyone else seems to love it which is probably why I have a healthy distrust for society as a whole. The idiots.
6/10 kind of basic but not too bad to have on in the background 5-01-2025
I had a friend once called Dan. We met in Yaroslavl', he was on a semester abroad from Nottingham Uni, and I was there from Sheffield. He was unintentionally hilarious. He had an iPod, and on his iPod was a playlist called 'Dan's Playlist', and all it had on it was 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing' twice. This album doesn't have 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing' on it, and isn't fantastic, musically speaking, but it brought back some fun memories.
I thought this was going to be super gay ngl, was surprisingly enjoyable.
Better than I remember it to be fair... Laura, Mary, Take Your Mama are all fantastic songs... The Comfortably Numb travesty is still one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life though. So it loses an extra star.
Started off really strong and I thought their Pink Floyd cover was a Bee Gees version but then the tracks just started getting stale.
i love the vibe but defo not my fav scissor sisters album, return to oz alone was worth a star i loved that song, other than that i was quite bored maybe because i’m tired, but love you anyway scissor sisters (i’m not gay)
Fun to listen to. It's like bee gees without any effort to be serious, I liked it, might listen again when I'm in the right mood.
For some reason I really disliked the piano in this album-- the choice to make some of the songs so piano-forward (at the expense of the bass and electronics which were more interesting) seemed inexplicable to me. On the other hand, I really liked the "Comfortably Numb" cover, felt like a unique, interesting take on the song. And the more bass-forward "Tits on the Radio" was fun.
Electronica disco beats that brings back flashbacks of the Bee Gees in the late 70's, isn't in my usual musical wheelhouse and this doesn't help to change my mind. It's enjoyable enough to listen to, it's upbeat and fun, but has little substance to really pull me in to be a fan. It is what it is, it's not something I would listen to often, but I wouldn't turn it off either.
Day464 - the comfortably numb remake was fun and different
Fav: Mary Least Fav: Comfortably Numb Whilst I didn’t love that cover of Comfortably Numb, I respect that they transformed it into a campy disco vibe, like with the rest of the album
Not unfun
I feel like Scissor Sisters was revolutionary in "gay pop" of the early 2000s, but it just feels dated to me now. I think it's fine, but I don't need to come back to the whole album. Best Songs: Laura, Mary, Return to Oz Worst Songs: Comfortably Numb, Filthy/Gorgeous
This was a fun album. I was leaning towards giving it a 4, but the disco-esque cover of Comfortably Numb annoyed me.
Kept my attention, even if I didn’t particularly like it. Each song is very different but familiar.
I liked this album. It started with piano hammering on the first song, but morphed into intricate songwriting and unique style through the rest of the album. I would listen to this again. Didn't have any songs that reached out and grabbed me. I think my buddy Stephen would really enjoy this album.
The premier "gay" album of all-time. Take Your Mama Out is a great song. I wouldn't recognize Comfortably Numb as the Pink Floyd song and, even though I'm not a big Pink Floyd fan, I know this is much worse. This album is the alternate soundtrack for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Lovers In the Backseat sounds like a reimagining of She Blinded Me With Science. You can't see tits on the radio should have been my Senior quote. You hope for more from the song based on the title. Filthy/Gorgeous was the second single....that's a pretty big drop from Take Your Mama Out, still the second best song on the album so far. Everything after Filthy/Gorgeous is too much of a change from the feeling of the album up to that point. Old glam rock is better than new glam rock.
I don't know what I was expecting. I had never heard the Scissor Sisters before, so everything here is new to me. Upon first listen, it kinda reminds me of Midnight Vultures-era Beck. There's a nu-disco reimagining of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" which as interesting. Overall their vision is consistent, and while I didn't love it, I didn't dislike it either.
Good but a little annoying if you know what I mean. As in, the fuck were they talking about? Tits on the radio, I suppose. God bless! 3/5
me and who
Not bad at all. Kind of glammy, kind of George Michaels -y.
Tiene cierto interes pero flojea
Glam-Disco-Pop. Light, fun, and a bit tongue in cheeky at points.
High energy. And it was a good, bubbly energy. I had a good time.
If my band had made this album, I'd be proud. Controversially I super enjoyed some parts of the comfortably numb cover, but the bad parts far eclipsed the good. (the BeeGees style Ha Ha Ha Ha inserted in different places, puke.) Overall, not a bad dancy album, but like... again my complaint for everything on this list is that there's so much better out there to represent the genres and styles they chose! for dancy synth pop, Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia is literally unstoppable. And Mag Bay's Mercurial World. I know nothing about music but I know this for sure
funny
This is pretty good
erm so this album is too gay even for a pansexual person. and the cover of my favourite pink floyd song makes me uncomfortable. and i wasn't numb during the runtime. i was painful. but hey, at least it is danceable. 3/5
3+
Jive-y but not my style. Return to Oz was cool.
Why was that class. Knocked a star off for touching comfortably numb though, that’s kinda sacrilegious
Enjoyed it mostly but the pink Floyd cover was terrible
Fun and flamboyant indie pop. Scissor Sisters have been a fun band to put on for me to jam to at random times in my life and you can usually count on them to hold a beat that keeps you moving. However, this is also a downside to their music for me, as I find that their songs never really go above and beyond and tend to hold too closely to one groove. There's many songs that sound good, and have good moments, but don't have those big explosions into the next level. I'm often looking for something more; for a hook to be more infectious, for a chorus to burst into a huge climactic moment. It just doesn't ever come to fruition, and this is ultimately a point that keeps me from rating this album higher. It's a high 2, like a 2.8. Enough to round up to a 3.
What is this? It's pulling a lot from the 80's, both glam and disco. I don't know how to feel about it. I hated the Comfortably Numb cover, it sounds like bad dance from the dead zone of music, when the 80's got stale, but grunge, rap, and britpop hadn't yet become dominant. That cover is about 15 years out of date. Otherwise, this album just grooves. I'm not going to call it smart or pioneering or anything like that, but it's just good in a way that I can groove to.
Not awful
16/02/2025
Some good moments!
I kinda like this but I also kinda find it annoying. Used to play a lot at my place of work
More like 3.5
It's alright
Funky. Good.
A bit odd for my tastes. The vocals are okay, but I didn't really like the album much
Sjovt opbrud, helt fair den er med på listen selvom det er endnu et britisk band. Jeg er gammel nok nu til at indrømme, at deres cover af Comfortably Numb er helt fint
Take Your Mama is such a banger!
Fun album Standout songs: Lovers in the backseat Music is the victim
I’d assumed they were a novelty act, but this has some, snappy numbers, especially in the first half when they drop in a touch of Elton John amongst the then-de rigueur post punk and disco arrangements. Doesn’t hold together terrifically well, but I had more fun than I expected.
Re-introduction to a solid Glam rock experience.
So so
Glam Rock feeling between comfortably numb and art on acid. Okay as background music.
Some solid dance/pop tracks, also very gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that)
Fun listen. Inessential.
This is just the poor man’s Of Montreal. Do yourself a favor, ignore this album and listen to The Sunlandic Twins instead.
The right amount of glam I suppose.
when this came out i downloaded an mp3 of Take Your Mama from Kazaa that was just the first verse looped for four minutes and i listened to it a lot and it broke my brain
There are a couple of songs that caught my attention: Take Your Mama, Mary, It Can't Come Quickly Enough, and Return To Oz. Their rendition of Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' was OK, but I still prefer the original. All-in-all, this was pretty straightforward and kind of what you'd expect the early 2000s to sound like. Nothing to really rave about, but not completely unworthy either.
Muy buen disco. Un 80s distinto, no tan robótico, más limpio.
Kind of fun, funky. The 'Comfortably Numb' cover is pretty sick. I knew Take Your Mama from before. I liked Filthy/Gorgeous and Music is the Victim. Both pretty boppy!
I thought I’d like it more based on some of the reviews. It’s good but their clear influences are generally better
The beat and quality of the music are good, the lyrics can fall flat often. Overall it is fresh and interesting but ultimately a time piece without lasting values
Better than expected but still not for me. 2.5/5
Scissor Sisters is the debut studio album by Scissor Sisters, originally released in 2004. This was a really interesting listen. I expected it to be more on the punk side, but it was not that at all. This reminded me a little bit of MGMT? But less good. However, some of the songs are pretty damn catchy. The production is pretty unique as well. Overall this was a pretty fun album.
Bringing back disco is cool and all but not much stuck with me. The Comfortably Numb cover is a bold choice but I did not care for it. It sounded like Stayin Alive at times.
It was fine. There was some enjoyable stuff. I’d just never listen to this over any older disco, didn’t really do anything for me
shame backwoods discotheque didn't make this album
Love this band and the first few songs, but this album gets sleepy.
I have never really understood the appeal of this album. A friend gave me this album on CD because she loved it, but I've always been pretty indifferent. There are a ton of songs that start off great, with a good beat or fun disco vibes, but then the vocals start and just don't match the energy. The Music is the Victim is the exception for me -- fun from start to finish. I don't require all music to be fun, but the disconnect between the minor melodies and lame vocals with the more energetic rhythms of the backing track lead to a disjointed and displeasing experience.
Sometimes Scissor Sisters sound like those cheesy pop bands from the 70s. And the band should have dropped the cover of "Comfortably Numb". But some tracks I enjoyed.
3.5 - very 2004
Ensimmäinen soittokierros oli hauska. Toisella loopilla alkoi jo puutumaan, joten ainakin tovin jaksaa viihdyytää boogiella.
Another blast from my college past. Take Your Mama is still my favorite from this one. I don't find myself returning to their music a lot, but they definitely have some really good, super fun songs.
The singles are cracking and the Pink Floyd cover is fun but this is not really particularly essential (nothing wrong with it either)
Whoever suggested that they cover Pink Floyd should be smacked in the face with a raw fish. Otherwise this album was odd but fine.
Funky and up beat.
This was pretty fun actually! I liked it very much. It was different than anything released in the 2000s, and it sounded pretty new for those times.
#83 - Good music of a very particular niche. Not necessarily my 🍵
Fairly energetic disco pop, can't hate but doesn't quite hit tge spot.
Listened Before? N This album was hot and cold for me. Lots of disco grooves which is kind of a nice thing, and Take Your Mama is a scorcher, but on the other end we have the disco version of Comfortably Numb... they should be ashamed of this version. Awful. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Take Your Mama
The coolest thing on this album was its electro-pop cover of Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' which works oddly well. I was pretty mild on most of the music here, especially when it was going in that white-washed funk direction. A hand-full of highlights though, like the song 'Mary' was pretty good, and I'd be lying if I said that the bass tone and line on 'Tits On The Radio' didn't kick ass - this entire song might be my favorite here, it's so fun. I think that's the saving grace of this album, it's pretty fun to listen to. But also insanely tacky at times, like how the auto-tune and moaning on 'Filthy/Gorgeous' destroy an otherwise perfectly fine contemporary funk-electro song. I didn't hate it though, and it certainly grew on me as I continued listening to it. Also, it does (sort of) feel like the type of album that would grow on me over time - it feels incredibly unique in its genre fusions.
Spoke to the innate cheesy 70sness of the UK
It’s pretty much wall-to-wall 70s tropes (funk, disco beats, falsetto), including the worst Pink Floyd cover I’ve heard. Was going to be a 2* but the album made a positive turn with the excellent synthpop track “It Can’t Come Quickly Enough” and the following “Return to Oz.” Unfortunately, the trend dies with “Get It Get It.”
I was enjoying the album until that cover of Comfortably Numb. That was God awful.
One of the very few albums I bought years ago on CD but don’t still have as I’m certain someone who came to work in my flat stole it! I did love it at the time though and was nostalgic listening back to it 20 years on. Comfortably Numb still a great cover and while it’s not all as good, you can hear the Elton John influence all over it
One good banger
Honestly enjoyed this. Very high 3 I think it’s almost a 4.
It was ok.
When this popped up today I couldn't really be bothered to listen but I persevered and it was decent. Fun (and often quite funny) camp disco pop.
Groovy disco beats set in a more contemporary tone. Lots of falsetto.
ive heard worse, but a pink floyd cover is wild. almost respectably insane, but the actual album is too disco for my taste. didn't find much to come back to or save here.
Took me back to the noughties. Strong singles but not as strong on the album tracks.
What ever happened?????
Recognized fewer tracks than expected despite having this album when it came out!
Meh
Итс окэй. Лучшая песня - Take Your Mama.
6/10
As much as I hate the abomination that is their version of Comfortably Numb this album is packed with a great variety of themes and genres that keeps it fun and interesting. 3.5 stars.
Cool project, fun to listen to but not really my style.
particularly like their version of comfortably numb.
Solid 3.5. catchy and quirky and fun.
not my thing highlights: lovers in the backseat, tits on the radio, music is the victim (sep 23 2024)
Weird. Kinda like an inferior “Midnite Vultures” but not bad.
3.75
Flere kendte 00’er pop/dance bangers, sjovt nok
3.5 Some solid tracks and unique sounds
Album went from a 3 to a 2 back to a 3
first listen very quirky and unpredictable
"Laura" is an all time bop. Anyone who says otherwise is a cop.
not really feeling this one
I'm all over the place with this album. Impressive musicianship; questionable lyrics. Not sure I care to listen to it again.
Surprisingly fun
I can't help when I was listening to this, I likened the band to Steel Panther and how that act is a tribute to metal but in a tongue in cheek kinda way. I mean, this is an obvious tribute to the Bee Gees, right? It's not just me. That's all I kept hearing in every song, not just the "Comfortably Numb" cover. And they're not just covering the disco era but things on their more weighty side, like "Trafalgar." Granted, disco isn't so blatant with a song title like "Tits On The Radio," but I think they had songs that were pretty much on target with all what Scissor Sisters is trying to do here. As for the "Comfortably Numb" cover... look, I will give them points for trying something different with the song. It's a pretty iconic song, and covering it is WAY difficult without it sounding exactly like the original. So the reinvention is a novel idea. It's just so hard to hear it as an upbeat song. So rather than the tribute, I would rather just listen to the Bee Gees. Top tracks: "Mary," "Return To Oz," "Filthy / Gorgeous"
This album is incredibly original, I'll give them that, at least in the sense you weren't hearing like it in 2004 and probably not since the 70's. But honestly, if I'm going to give a nod to any band or album in the whole 2000's glam rock revival, it's The Darkness and Permission to Land. They also were completely different and off the wall, but their debut hit the charts a year before this one. This one isn't quite glam rock in the same vein. I mean sure, Take Your Mama puts an Elton John vocal style with a George Michael Freedom piano beat. And Music is the Victim feels like The Bitch is Back. But there's also a lot of Bee Gee vocal stylings. Their Comfortably Numb remake is a perfect example (chorus a little weird but verses sounded cool). Filthy/Gorgeous too (and what a tune! My favorite on the whole album). Mary sounds like Robbie Williams at first before ending with a more Elton John motif. So it's more piano glam to me, with some disco funk undertones. And I'm not knocking them for sounding like Elton or the Gibbs - no one was doing that in 2004 (The Darkness was channeling classic hard rockers). And their lyrics are hilarious. Still, while this album is fun sometimes I get bored. Songs like Tits on the Radio are novel for a bit but then I the novelty wears off halfway through. I'll bet they are a blast live. Eccentric and unique, but a few too many dips in the album to be a 4 (3.5 feels right).
Ok, Elton John is not dead, but was he reincarnated as Jake Shears? (e.g., Take Your Mama). It wasn't bad, but wasn't really a standout. And who thought to make a disco version of Comfortably Numb? Can't say I'm a fan, but hey. Tracks I liked: Take Your Mama (go Elton!), Lovers in the Backseat, Return to Oz.
2.75
Little overwrought and over baked for me but I can dig
Really defies genres some great melodies and fun instrumentation
First two songs are pretty good . Comfortably numb…
I recognized more of this album than I realized, it brought up a lot of high school memories, Take Your Mama in particular. That Comfortably Numb cover was something else, really transformative. its a fun, jaunty album that kinda has its own thing going on. fairly enjoyable.
I was today years old when it dawned on me that ‘Scissor Sisters’ aren’t hairdressers. This was mostly a lot of fun and better than I expected it to be.
Best Song: Take Your Mama. I really dug the hippie funk vibe here. Worst Song: Lovers In The Backseat. Just an annoying chorus repeated ad nauseum. Overall: Pleasant but also kind of forgettable. Feels like good summer drinking music. Porch music. If not beach music, then at least beach montage music.
Kind of fun pop album.
"Take Your Mama Out" is a classic, but the rest just don't have the same hook.
The 1st track sounded like it was going to be Dolly Parton 9-5! But it wasn't & I enjoyed it. The Comfortably Numb cover was interesting so different. 3.5 stars!
Not as wonderful as I expected, still good 3.3
First thing's first, that fucking Comfortably Numb cover. Bee Gees on Floyd is an unholy pairing, but I can respect it. I can't enjoy it, but I can respect it. If nothing else it made me appreciate how odd the Comfortably Numb chorus is as a hook: I don't think it works in this disco setting whatsoever. Rest of the album is decently fun. Lovers in the Backseat feels foretelling of the Strokes output from the 2010s, which is fun to see as a 2010s Strokes apologist. I also heard MGMT in some of the later tracks. Wasn't expecting such an influential record today, but I'm glad I got to it.
A fun album.
It's all good and rhythmic, but there is no certain hit for me. There are good songs though.
Feeling the Elton John touch with this album. Several songs felt like he was a major influence in their composition. A good first listen.
Quirky. Mostly in good ways. Just as things would get derivative primarily to 70s disco tropes, things would get interesting by bringing in a modern Trip-Hop beat or something similar. Sometimes it was intriguing but just as many times the lead singers voice would chime in and lose the vibe.
I enjoy this group enough. I think I Take Your Mama is a great song. The rest of this was kind of weak.
This was a nice surprise. They have a very mixed/classic 70s sound with a modern edge. The comfortably numb cover has a disco vibe but the vocal melody felt off
Disco-angehauchte Bee Gee Sounds. Viele Elemente anderer Künstler, eine Cover-Version von "Comfortably Numb". Unterhaltsam, aber nicht zum regelmäßig hören. 3/5
Should it be on this list? Yes Do I give a care? No
Helt svängigt men saknar x factor
It’s ok and some songs are pretty good but felt a bit long
Fun!
A few hits and some filler. Good album. Fun album... Slightly above mediocre album. 64/100
It's alright. I knew quite a lot of tracks already, and some of them are a good upbeat time, but I was expecting to like this more. It's just ok. The Comfortably Numb cover surprisingly isn't all that obnoxious, and kind of works. The best thing about this album is the album cover.
Some 5 star belters on here, but also some absolute filler.
Another one I own on CD
Disco! A-puoli todella hyvä, onnistuneita biisejä ja tanssittaa. B-puolen biisit olisi paljolti voinut jättää sinkkujen b-puolivarastoon. Vähän liian tissi-sanoituksia mun makuun, mutta myös vetoavaa huumoria on. Niin kuului tässä kevyeen voguingiin kutsuvassa genressä.
Started out fun with a retro disco feel that did not feel too contrived. After a few songs though I got tired of it pretty quickly. This is a good side dish but not the main meal.
Pretty fun lil queer pop album, some bangers 👍
This was a fun yet somewhat silly album. The old disco style is definitely fun because it is executed well. Disco is definitely polarizing but a new age style of it is a lot easier to tolerate in small doses. Overall this is a pleasant surprise of an album from the early 2000s. 6.4/10
Modern Bee Gees with maybe with a little extra funk. I'll admit I kinda like it. Also I wasn't as offended as others with cover Comfortable Numb. Though I can't really agree that it needs to be on the list.
This is supposed to be campy, right? I was supposed to be amused? I’m going to assume so because otherwise this would be a 2. But come on, Tits on the Radio! A bizarro world Comfortably Numb cover!? Hahaha! It’s baudy and silly fun with a funky disco groove.
This was ok. I just don't see listening to it again.
Fairly forgettable. It's fine. No idea why it's on the list.
Not bad in general... but that cover of Comfortably Numb definitely wasn't for me.
Wide variety of styles, including a very ... interesting cover of "Comfortably Numb." A little odd, but quite interesting.
This was fun.
i was surprised but excited Scissor Sisters were on here.
Fluctuated between hating this and loving it. I'm not much of a pop music person but this was entertaining and fresh.
Fun album! Cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" has hints of Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" Filthy / Gorgeous Music is the Victim
This was all over the place. Really liked some songs, really didn’t like others. And I don’t think they’re scissor sisters at all.
Some songs were okay. Others I kept checking to make sure my AirPod was connected and not playing out loud at my corporate job.
Wow, totally off my radar. It was pretty good up to Filthy/Gorgeous, at which point I simply fell in love ❤️
fun pop nonsense
First half is great, but the back end is pretty weak
I was kinda vibing with this until I heard maybe the worst cover of a song I've ever heard in my life in Comfortably Numb. I don't even understand what their artistic interpretation was meant to be of it, but it very obviously missed the mark. But then...I started vibing to it again. It's too electronica-heavy for my taste, but I really enjoy the "real" instrumentals. Really good variation in feeling too...just don't make the song about a literal fever dream sound like the acid trip from hell next time. Favorite track: Filthy/Gorgeous
This album is a mixed bag. It's annoying when they sing like the Bee Gees but it's good when they don't. There's some good electronic production in many tracks. "Mary" is actually splendid and a highlight of the album. It's too poppy for my taste. 3 stars for a decent album.
I don't think I had heard any of these songs before. It was a solid album for sure, just not really my style.
A pretty fun album, although their Comfortably Numb is still a hard skip. Not entirely sure why it's on this list. But then again... Maybe because there has to be some stuff on the list that's just feel-good enjoyable with hints of Bee Gees, Elton John and songtitles about boobs.
Nice disco fun cool pop album. Some nice tracks committed to the dance. Kinda slowed down at the end.
Fullt godkänd.
I really liked "Take Your Mama" but the rest of the album didn't hit for me. Nonetheless, it wasn't terrible to listen to and they had a cover of a Pink Floyd song so I was happy, even though it wasn't my favorite cover.
I am not the market for 00’s glam. I hated the original glam. For glam, this was fine. I didn’t hate it.
I enjoyed the bulk of this album. Not great or revolutionary, but enjoyable. Take Your Mama and Better Luck Next Time were the highlights …. Comfortably Numb wasn’t, but they did completely remake it, practically unrecognizable ….
Wow – that was a lot of fun! Never heard of Scissors Sisters before, though they weren’t likely to ever appear on my radar… Smart, clever, funny, well-executed musically, with excellent vocals and lyrics – what a great combination for a solid album… Nice diversity throughout the album as well – which I always appreciate… Favs included the Bee Gees-disco-style version of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” – as that was a pretty creative arrangement… Really enjoyed “Mary”, “Tits On The Radio”, and the sultry and hilarious “Filthy/Gorgeous” about a tranny hooker – as those tracks were so well done, and so much fun to listen to… The other aspect of the band that I thought was cool, was that they could also produce something on the more serious side, as the closing track - “Return To Oz” is the best on the album IMO… Also noted like many others that vocals that remind you of a sort of a younger version of Elton John does not hurt either… Really, really well-done… Love bands that don’t take themselves too seriously, but clearly have the chops musically and lyrically to create some inventive music – and this band covers every one of those bases… Would probably give it a 3.50 if we could score that way, but will have to stick with a solid 3 for a fun, creative, and extremely well-done album… Glad I listened, as this one never would have come my way without the 1,001…
It was alright. Had a not so good cover of Comfortably Numb. I will probably not listen to it again. I will round up.
Amazing release at the time. I like a lot of what they did. Feels a little dated now though.
sirvieron
Aiight I guess. Weird dance music
What an interesting mix of song styles! All are quite easy to listen to (even their cover of Comfortably Numb, which conflicts me at a deep level) and generally good pop. I yearn for more complexity in their compositions though.
Don’t know what I expected, but definitely not a pop/funk/electro remix of comfortably numb to be in there.. both blasphemy and cool at the same time. Overall abit TOO upbeat of an album with very shallow lyrics (except CN but that doesn’t count). Fun listen either way.
Vaguely familiar with the Scissor Sisters prior to listening. I'm not sure how I would describe this sound, they're labeled as glam rock but all the glam rock I know and have listened to is from the 70s. I guess this is the natural evolution of a music genre into the current century. Anyways, there's a good mix of jovial, high-energy jams and slow ballads on here. Complete with an...interesting cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb".
Nice but Not good
Fun, groovy songs. Lots of attitude and the musical chops to back it up. I loved their album "Ta Da" when it came out, this one is equally enjoyable, though a little less polish and more edge.
They understood and nailed the assignment. I don't personally care for the finished product.
Pretty good 80s dance album with a bit of an alternative touch. 3.5 stars
Doesnt sound gay to me.
Ok but not great
fun but not great
Full of good noughties bops.
Meh, ok.
File under: completely unnecessary addition to list. Sweet timing though, it was 20 years old last week. I will admit they were a breath of fresh air when they came along. Ana Matronic seems cool as fuck and I enjoyed her radio 2 show. I have heard some of these songs soooo many times since though. Cannot stand take your mama out. Not being the biggest post-Barrett Floyd fan I had never twigged that Comfortably Numb was a cover of THAT Comfortably Numb. So I guess points for making a cover that sounds nothing like the original. Makes sense now why the words don't scan with the rhythm. To be fair once I got past Take your mama home I might be able to enjoy this. Mary sounds like, what does it sound like? Tears For Fears, that's it. It's the production on the vocal. Sowing...the seeds of love, the seeds of love. Good chorus for Tits on the Radio, the rest is meandering. Same goes for filthy gorgeous. You know how you get singles bands and albums bands? I think the Scissor Sisters might be a chorus band. Pathologically unable to write a verse that is above mediocre. Great choruses though. Best songs - Can't Come Quickly Enough (by a distance), Comfortably Numb. The bonus track Get it Get it is decent too. Why is it not in the album, there's a couple of real turkeys this could have replaced. Maybe they thought too similar to filthy gorgeous etc
Some bangers bang and some do not!
Laura and Take Your Mama are great. Rest meh
Was mostly really good! But Comfortably Numb was violently offensive.
Some nice rhythms but kinda harsh.
3.25
Super funky with some eyebrow-raising lyrics. Loved the sound, lyrical content was questionable, and interesting to learn the wild history of this boundary-less group. Three stars.
I enjoyed ear feel of the music, it was interesting to listen to. Some songs with the super high voice and driving instruments throughout. Some of the lyrics were kind of spicy and I wasnt sure if I was supposed to feel uncomfortable. Ill give this 3 stars but I would not be upset listening to it again.
Fairly good. Hadn't heard before.
Generally OK modern disco music, but this version of Comfortably numb should be a criminal offence.
Pop elegante y bien elaborado. Con tonos de falsetes. Algo electrónico también. Simplemente escuchable. Podría llegar a gustar más
Only a few good Songs
Ben voilà quoi
Really weird but not terrible.
Nice party music, but the album is too long and a bit lacking in nuance
Strong start but the latter half was a bit meh. Awful cover of Comfortably Numb.
I remember hearing these songs but didn’t know the band. Kinda wish they were a lesbian punk rock group from the name!
3,5
Some of these songs could easily be from the late 80s/early 90s. What a weird cover of Comfortably Numb... That is not a song I'd have imagined an upbeat version to. Really enjoyed Better Luck and Music is the Victim.
Revisiting an album I last heard when it came out, and when the songs were everywhere, I expected to dislike this intensely. But you know what, it's pretty likeable and has aged much better than I thought it would. A pleasant surprise, and shows that they were more than a gimmick cover and cool videos band.
C'est sympa mais. Des titres entraînants, des fois un peu barbant. Leur reprise de "Comfortably numb" est au final assez bof, passé l'effet gaga de ce cross over bee gees Pink Floyd. Laura fait un bon début d'album. "It can't come quickly enough" est très sympa. "Filthy/Gorgeous" est efficace. Ils étaient peut être le sauveur d'un certain fun a l'époque, mais aujourd'hui c'est plus tiède. Leur deuxième album est de toute façon mieux, avec quelques vrais tubes imparables.
Good
Tough call on this one, definitely something new and exciting given the usual British fare here but a tad too homogenous to land in four-star category. Really enjoyed the defiant, distinctive personality on this LP, and was pleasantly surprised an album this unapologetically queer garnered such strong support. The instrumentals and compositions are quite prescient in retrospect, foreshadowing the MGMT-era indie dance craze of the 2010s. Not sure there’s enough variety to sustain a full-length’s worth of interest, but I still really enjoyed this one and wish more of the Brit selections could be as out there as this one.
A fine, normal album that I didn't have any gripes or anything with. I feel like I've heard this band before on something but not sure where. Either way, as I always do, I question why this one is on this list but upon reading the wiki it is very glaring. While this album did not perform well in the US, it performed extremely well in the UK. Another instance of bias.
Stark trea
Scissor Sisters found a somewhat niche fan base as being unabashedly gay dance pop. Even then, most gays are partial to the more mainstream pop acts like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Scissor Sisters, in comparison, is tied up in making genuinely catchy tunes or tongue-in-cheek jokes. Shamelessly sexual, but never in an erotic way. Highlights are the surprisingly heartwarming "Take Your Mama", and the electric "Filthy / Gorgeous" which lives up to it's name by having the dirtiest synths. Despite this, I think they're better off with synths than piano. They lean almost piano rock for many of their songs, though their best stuff is elsewhere.
I enjoyed this ! 3*
Musically it's OK - I suspect that it's the band's association with gay culture and the band's name that account for this album's inclusion. I wasn't impressed with their cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb".
51 Based on this scale: 1 - 0 to 19 2 - 20 to 39 3 - 40 to 59 4 - 60 to 79 5 - 80 to 100 This was better than I'd expected.
Not my thing.
👍🏻
This is okay. I don’t really vibe with the singer though. I enjoyed Mary and Return to Oz, but the rest didn’t really do anything for me.
There’s some cool stuff in here. I would probably enjoy it more in a different mood
This one was pretty good, two decent songs that made the playlist but nothing special really
This is fun, but not particularly groundbreaking.
This was ok but it’s not really my thing. Kind of sounded like a mix of Elton John and disco music. The cover of “comfortably numb” was fucking awful and should be deleted.
I haven't listened to this since it first came out. It's still pretty good, not something I'd listen to all the time, but lots of the songs are catchy, and I like their version of Comfortably Numb.
Earns bonus points for that “Comfortably Numb” cover. C
3.4
Some nice tunes but they would get better than this
This feels like MGMT before MGMT. Taking old sounds and giving them a modern sheen. Can’t say I loved it but I did like a lot of it.
I liked it ... 3 stars
Great record. I like the hits.
Once again, we see the Britain-centric nature of this project. Eighty percent of this album's sales were in Britain. The rest of the world did not care. It's not a bad album, but it's not great. I'd probably give it 3.5 stars, but I'll round down.
Fun times.
These guys are all over the place
Enjoyable at times, bit too weird at other times
2-3
Their glam rock style is fun. Reminiscent of Elton John, Bowie and Queen. I’m not sure how I feel about the Pink Floyd cover.
At first I thought, oh, shades of David Bowie. Then, no, it's Elton John. Then wait, is it the Bee Gees doing a Pink Floyd cover? No wait, it sounds like George Michael. Anyway, interesting mix of influences and overall pretty enjoyable. I think the cover of Comfortably Numb was not a great idea though. 3 stars.
I hated them when I heard them for 1st time, they raped the brilliant Comfortably Numb, made this introvert, depression song into a party song, F*ck you! But saw them live at a festival and loved their energy, still despite beautiful songs like Mary on this album they are for me live band to sing a long with I Dont Feel Like Dancing. 3 Stars
I do like some camp disco. This is fun, but there are better of the genre
All quite fun and poppy, but it’s quite long and I don’t really remember anything from it.
Never heard of them before. Standouts: Take Your Mama, Comfortably Numb, Return to Oz Others: Laura, Mary, Lovers in the Backseat, Filthy/Gorgeous, It Can’t come quickly enough. 3.5/5
Laura Comfortably Numb

I was with this album right when it dropped and remember Comfortably Numb as the standout track--listening as I was to a lot of Tiga at the time. Overall, there is a lot to like here and the band was bringing some new representation to music. A lot to like here still, big orchestral electronic sounds, good sense of timing, and agreeable vocals.
Better than I remember - there's definitely a rock/disco crossover appeal here that is at once modern yet reminiscent of a lot of 70s rock; "Mary" is giving me a cool Elton vibe or what Elton should have morphed into during the 80s. I'm trying (mostly) to overlook the hideous cover of "Comfortably Numb" which at best is just bad; it's probably the vocals which sound too throwaway/tongue-in-cheek/jokey to make it work at all. All in all it's a mostly fun and not-difficult listen but a bit too much cheesy/dancey vibe overall for me e.g. has a relative sameness to it especially early that i'm not sure it's enough for me to elevate it to keeper/4 status. Best songs: Mary, Take Your Mama 7/10 3 stars.
Really not my typical type of music, but their version of Comfortably Numb was pretty great.
Not for me, but fun
Better than I thought it would be.
