Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Good two recognizable classics
That was a lovely albums m to bring up 1000 with! What will 1001 be?
A couple of standout tunes, and an overall unoffensive record.
Pretty gud
Favorite Track: Don’t Forget About Me Archetypical Philly Soul string and horn arrangements, should be called Dusty in the City of Brotherly Love. Never knew Dusty was British, can imagine that in ‘69 a white woman from London putting out a banger of a soul/motown album had people shook.
Nice album Dusty, but didn’t really flow for me.
Lovely voice. But when I hear women like her in the 60s, I think about all the other women who could really bring it that never got to see the inside of a studio. It's a guilt I have a hard time with. White mediocrity! Go team!
Like the other album of hers that I heard here, A Girl Called Dusty, it’s sweet and old-school with a certain rare quality, but it’s not really to my fancy.
First listen Saved 6/11 Top track: Son of a Preacher Man
I appreciate this album but I have never fully fallen in love with it. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic but the rest of the album just has a little too much pop schmaltz for my liking. Dusty's voice is stellar, I just wish these songs had more grit to them.
Amazing voice, good instrumentation, tons of passion, but really doesn't move the needle for me. Nothing to dislike, but maybe an hour was a bit much.
This has one song I always love to hear. That son of a preacher man. The rest I can do without. Nothing repulsive about it, just not my thing.
Lovely morning listen
3.3 better than expected
Beautiful voice, some properly dazzling tracks, but occasionally a little twee.
Solid but outside of Preacher Man, not spectacular.
Let’s be so honest I wasn’t paying a ton of attention. Was listening on the train up to NYC. But just a little lovin is such a good song, and I bet with a second listen some of these songs would be of similar caliber
So much better than her last album in the challenge. Not really my thing, but probably deserves the 'classic' status. Pop it on and then get your work done!
Not something I'd probably think to listen to, but I really enjoyed it. Dusty has a gorgeous voice and it was a nice way to end such a flat week
One of those ones where you hear it and you’re like “ohhhh you sing THAT song? Cool cool gotcha”
Pretty great, with at least a couple of true classics. I would put this back on basically any time.
Great album but not really memorable…
Thank goodness it wasn't Dusty in Nashville. That would have been horrible. But a few miles up the road was good for her, and my ears. A few classics on here including 'Preacher Man', which is an all tkm3 great song. It deserves a 3 star.
This album was pretty good. My only qualms were that her singing was generally lackluster, and that Son of a Preacher Man stood out as a single, with no other songs coming close to matching the quality. All in all not bad vibes - 3/5.
Son of a Preacher Man is a classic but none of the other tracks really stood out to me.
pretty good
Son of a preacher man. Thats it
Zzzzzzzzzzz
Ganz ok.
Makes me feel like cigarettes and coffee, and I don't even smoke.
Quite nice, great voice and a couple of absolute gems.
Some great songs, some mid
Need to give it another listen, didn't grab me like I expected.
Decent pop album 3/5
3.5 very pleasant. Started great
Beautiful voice. Got that old timey vibe to it that honestly still kind of runs together for me between multiple artists but I'm trying to change that. I just need to listen to more stuff like this. I liked the instrumentals here and the chord progressions were enjoyable to my ears. A little too romantic at times for my usual taste but it was a good listen. I'll run it back. Second listen was better. Solid ass album. Not too long either.
Dusty's pretty iconic. "Son of a Preacher Man" is classic. Good R&B/Soul songs otherwise. I would've thought this album was earlier - sort of strange to think of this as being (basically) post-Beatles. It's good for what it is, no complaints. 3.8
Good
Beautiful voice. Songs were ok.

Not available on Google Music :(
Nice enough, as vanilla as it comes.
Knew nearly nothing about Dusty before this came up, so was interesting to read about her. As for the album, Son of a Preacher obvs v.cool tune. Don’t forget about me and Breakfast in bed also enjoyable, defo benefitting from the upbeat soul type arrangements of the day. Rest of the album all rather unmemorable and a bit slow for me. Windmills of your mind for some unfathomable reason makes me think of Greece - was it in a film or something?
Okay
A couple great songs and the whole album was beautiful, total 60s sound and vibe!! Made me think of my mom and her friends in high school!
She’s sweet and smooth and sings about love. Easy to get and enjoy.
Son of a Preacher Man is the only song I was familiar with on this album, the rest was enjoyable though
Some absolute classics
I enjoyed this a lot! I had never listened to Dusty Springfield before but her name seemed familiar. I especially enjoyed the first three tracks, but it was enjoyable all through. I would give this a 3.5/5 if possible.
This album's largely carried by "Son Of A Preacher Man", yeah, but that's not to put down the rest of it. It's very nicely orchestrated blue-eyed soul and there's not really much to complain about. Or say in general. So... Yeah. Good job, Dusty.
Sweet old album
My mom would listen to this 3/5
I enjoyed this music.
Great vibe! Forgot about a few of those songs
Other than Preachers Son this is just a mediocre blue eyed soul album. It’s not bad but it’s not particularly special either.
Pretty good, but I'm not sure it's a stronger collection than 'A Girl Called Dusty'. It seems there's one absolute knockout track on here, a handful of strong ones, and some so-so songs too. I was interested to see Carole King's fingerprints are on this album, having heard her on the generator recently, and also early writing credits for the legendary Randy Newman too.
I like Dusty. Just some good 60s pop
A nice listen, but nothing too special. Son of a preacher man is a classic. The rest of the songs are rather forgettable. Also like the windmills of your mind.
It’s ok
Nice but not as “strong” as it would be for my musical taste
Her real name is Dusty Sprungfeld
Some great songs like son of a preacher man and so much love. Dusty has a stunning voice. Lots of soul, a British Icon Favourite song: Son of a preacher man Least favourite:All nice tracks Album artwork: Iconic: Great cover
unohtui kuunnella
It was good but too long. Some songs were not this great to make this a compete hit record.
Lovely. Easy.
4/5/24. Decent 60s blue-eyed soul. Son of a Preacher Man is an obvious highlight. Can definitely revisit from time to time.
Who is this son of a preacher man and why ain’t he preaching no more?
Can’t avoid but thank Dusty with all my self for recording one of the pearls of Pulp Fiction! Such a sweet voice and sound. The recording volume is a little bit shaky though
It was fine background music. Nothing more. I'd rather be watching a wrestling match with Dusty Rhodes while listening to Rick Springfield.
Easy listening Rating: 3.2
this one was okay i think it was good background music and had that one song from the office where jan was singing to her baby. unsure about the rating but it’ll probably not be very high because i don’t see myself listening through again but who knows? maybe i’ll come back to it later in life and find that i love it.
Apart from "Son Of A Preacher's Man"--obvioulsy a killer track, as everyone who has ever watched *Pulp Fiction* knows--I have always had a hard time understanding the appeal of this record for so many people. Those cover versions of other people's tunes have nice arrangements, such as their lush string sections, but they're also very sugary, and they don't necessarily groove the way the album's most famous song does. Unfortunately, I don't have much time today to try to like this record--and I do want to like it, you know. Maybe I'm missing something, and it's me who is not patient enough to spot the assets of the album. So I'll probably return to it some day. Yet as of now, it seems to me that Springfield's debut LP *A Girsl Called Dusty* offers a slightly more fun and fresher experience. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums", translating to a 8/10 grade for more general ones (5+3) Number of albums left to listen to: more than 200, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums I'll keep in my own list: a half, approximately. Number of albums I *might* include : a quarter, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I won't include: more than a quarter.
Some really great songs.
Faves: Son of a Preacher Man, Don't Forget About Me
Brits do it better. But track 3... ~hits from the booooong~ is all I could think about.
As expected, it was really good. Everything is a 3 .
The album didn’t resonate with me at first but I can really see the influence on modern day artists like Lana Del Ray or Adele.
So this is who sings Son of a Preacher Man. It's OK in a mellow AM gold kind of way.
3.3. Folk/Soul/Jazzy
Okay so the 1001 Albums author is a Dusty Springfield stan. Liked this more than the last one we listened to, it feels like she found her own style between that one and this one.
I was pretty reluctant to listen to another Dusty album so soon, but it was a lot better than the last. Definitely listenable.
11/1001 I think this album is much better than her debut, I think she did a better job on this album. Her voice is much better here. There is a slight influence on rock and an experience acquired in the studio. However, this album didn't seem like a big deal to me. I don't think it's that good and I feel like it got repetitive at a certain point. I think they had all the tools to make a much better album and it wasn't made. It's a shame because when I started listening to it I got very excited but I ended up being disappointed. Notable songs: So Much Love, Son Of A Preacher Man, I Dont Wanna To Hear It Anymore and The Windmills Of Your Mind
I listened to this by an open window during an afternoon thunderstorm, was lovely, I’m a sucker for anything late 60s. Also, Dusty Springfield is a sick name. I would give 3.5 stars if I could do that.
What’s the over under on how many babies were made in Iowa to this album in the 60’s? Some great cuts here, but inconsistent. This album could deff use a remaster, as I find some parts get a little rough. I’d love to Dusty’s voice pop a little more over the Instrumentals. Son of a preacher man is a banger, but as my boy Zachary has said before, I hate how the songs just abruptly end.
Easy listening... when people say Jazz is music for the background they mean albums like this I mean. This is an amazing feat a woman singer who in the late 60's in the age of rock and roll and makes a record so jazz so preachy and so nice to listen to. I do not see the meaning of why it is here but it is just fine she has a beautiful voice too. The drums on No Easy Way Down are incredible, Listen to that song and just listen to the drums wowwow. This has the weird problem with records where the middle is forgettable and the beginning and ending are great! Son of a preacher man is an iconic song and its cool yeah it is cool I think this is a perfect 6 from me Favorite tracks: so much live and No easy way down a
She has such an interesting voice. Surprisingly soulful. Obviously “Son of a Preacher Man” is the standout of this album, and none of the other songs really grabbed me. However, it was a pleasant, easy listen.
She has a very powerful voice, album was a pleasant enough listen. Not sure why it’s called Dusty in Memphis.
Typical 60s sound. Dusty's voice is a bit over, there is too much tremolo for my liking. Nothing outstanding, besides "Son of a Preacher".
Son of a Preacher Man is fantastic, and the whole vibe is good. Rest of it seemed too low key for me
I've been listening to the song "Spooky" a ton so its nice to explore more of her work. I love her voice.
son of a preacher 12/10 reszta średnia
I really enjoyed this album for what it had to offer. There were multiple good songs like son of a preacher man and the windmills of your mind. 6.5
Not bad, soon got bored. Would probably pick a couple of tracks good, but overall not for me.
Enjoyed more than I expected. A few great tracks on there
That's not my taste in musik. Soothing. Ok.
3.5 out of 5. Great album the windmills of you mind prolly my fave.
3/5
I wish I could give it a 3.5. Great album overall. I love the instrumentation and feel of each song.
Yep her name sounds exactly like the music, dusty springfield
Destacan los temas de apertura: "Just A Little Lovin'", "So Much Love" o "Son Of A Preacher Man", la canción que más me gusta del álbum. También a destacar "The Windmills Of Your Mind".
Honestly, my favorite part of soul music are the wonderful vocals, and Dusty's are very understated and airy. Therefore I liked this less than expected, but there are a few standout tracks Favorite songs: Son of a Preacher Man is wonderful, of course. Breakfast in Bed - nice groove, second best song in the album So Much Love - those Memphis musicians really give this track an oomph
3,4
Her voice is maple syrup. Unfortunately, for most of the album, Jerry Wexler surrounds her in cotton candy orchestration. But Son of a Preacher Man. That track is so good you could put the 45 on this list and I'd give it 5 stars. And the rest of the album is pleasant. So it's a good one to pull out and put on the platter from time to time.
Dusty was horny and I respect that. 3 stars
Just a Little Lovin'- 3.3/5 So Much Love- 3.6/5 Son of a Preacher Man- 5/5 I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore- 3.7/5 Don't Forget About Me- 4/5 Breakfast in Bed- 3.5/5 Just One Smile- 3.2/5 The Windmills of Your Mind- 5/5 In the Land of Make Believe- 3.7/5 No Easy Way Down- 3.1/5 I Can't Make It Alone- 3.6/5 Total - 3.8/5
Really liked her voice but the songs didn’t end up on any of my playlists.
I'm a sucker for a soulful woman vocalist, especially if the voice is a little raspy and tortured. I also like strings. And the overall sound manages to avoid sounding too old-timey for me. Still, aside from the well known track (Son of a Preacher Man) I only ended up liking a couple of tracks: "Windmills of Your Mind" and "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore".
Not bad, just maybe too... schmaltzy... for my tastes.
A pleasant but very much of its time listen. Preferred when the orchestration and vocals were more upbeat ('Don't Forget About Me,' the song everyone knows) as the slower songs definitely feel a bit cheesy from the viewpoint of 2024.
Decent sound, but pretty clear why she only ever had the one song get super popular.
Not my style.
3.5
Bloody excellent, but not really compelling
not very memorable but still nice
A decent album, but it doesn't stand out. It has its ups and downs, it's enjoyable, with good arrangements and vocals, it does the job, but it doesn't bring anything extraordinary, nothing that makes me want to listen to it over and over again. Soul music performed by white artists always leaves that feeling of something missing. It's definitely not a bad album, but far from being memorable. Best track: Cliché, but definitely "Son of a Preacher Man".
Was ok actually, perfectly easy to listen to
Son of a Preacher Man is a stone cold R&B classic. Virtually all of the rest of it sounds like late 60s/early 70s filler - hard to tell it apart from any other average sound from the era. It's fine, just not special.
Good
again not my style but a fun little pop album, so many fade away outros
Nic classic album. Definitely feel the eta with this one.
A couple of very good ones, but a lot of forgeteable and similar stuff
I wasn't sure what to expect since I haven't liked most albums from this decade for various reasons but I really liked her. She feels country-rock and overall this album was very enjoyable to listen to
After giving Dusty In Memphis a good listen, It is actually a pretty good album. Dusty had a very good voice and the music had a similar style to that of the albums from Elton John or Billy Joel that i heard, which i really like. Some of the songs could be a little forgettable though, However, It was still a good album Best Song: The Windmills of Your Mind Worst Song: So Much Love
Really good. Another artist, with just one popular song, but such a nice album actually
Good actually but not quite for me
Dusty was a powerhouse in the 60s! I like her hits, just not into this softer lovey-dovey music enough to enjoy the whole album. Great performances by her and the session players however. 2.5/5
I have mad respect for the artist, she has a powerful voice and so much talent. I didn’t enjoy this album as much as the last one on this but her talent is undeniable 3
Day21 - what a voice
Niet mijn smaak… wel goed
Loved the southern sound with her great voice. Enjoyed the album.
Just a Little Lovin - 7/10 So Much Love - 7/10 Son of a Preacher Man - 7.5/10 I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore - 7/10 Don’t Forget About Me - 7/10 Breakfast in Bed - 7.5/10 Just One Smile - 7/10 The Windmills of Your Mind - 7/10 In The Land of Make-Believe - 7/10 No Easy Way Down - 8/10 I Can't Make It Down - 8/10 TOTAL - 80/110
I don't think I had ever heard of Dusty Springfield before, but I did recognize some of the songs.
Son of a preacher man; vilket spår!
3/5
Sex saturated - but in PG language. “In the Land of Make Believe” is Joni-like in sound of vocals. “Windmills” could be a James Bond closing credits song! Musicians definitely sound like they spent some time w Elvis.
This is a decent adult contemporary, oldie pop, or maybe 'blue-eyed' soul album. Dusty Springfield is an impressive singer who is credited with influencing a long line of pop female artists. "Son of a Preacher Man" is a very popular song which has had strong resurgence after "Pulp Fiction."
Dusty's voice is so distinctive, and so is her music. Nice album.
Good vibes. Son of a preacher man is the highlight of course. 3 stars
Acorde a la epoca
Good but not my vibe
Not my type of music. Clearly v talented and a few well known songs.
Son of a Preacher man can be identified from the first second! I was unfamiliar with the rest of the album or Dusty, but I appreciated this opportunity to be more familiarized.
Classic, not my thing
nice atmosphere, beautiful voice very good tone, not too high. good bass but should’ve been louder, lacking instrumentals but that’s just my personal opinion, i need something to be busier.
Finally discovered who sings "Son of a Preacher Man". Nice discovery.
Pop, female, mid, timeless voice, good mix, nice piano/instrumental melodies, harmonies, tacky, fadeouts
No Easy Way Down
Moody, can't relate.
Son of a Preacher Man bangs, naturally.
Great memories
Son of a Preacher Man was amazing. The rest were nice but not my cup of tea.
It’s ok. I think more jazzy songs like “The Windmills of Your Mind” would have suited her voice better.
Torch songs not usually my thing, but I get the appeal
Great voice! But it’s a little too sappy for my taste.
Original singer of "Son of a Preacher Man". Sound is iconic late 60s early 70s white lady in a nice way.
I got some James Bond vibes from a few of the songs on this album. Overall the album was fairly enjoyable but not one I would come back and listen to.
Not bad, kind of a Burt Bacharach feel to some of it maybe?
Jan 2 Zoned out after a couple songs, bored a couple songs before end
This was a soul album! Unexpected as the name Dusty Springfield always made me think she was a country artist. She has a pleasing voice, but ultimately I found some tracks to be drawn out and unable to capture my attention. I liked the spunky sound of Son of a Preacher Man best, but possibly because it was the only track I’d previously heard. Some of the more emotional tracks were enjoyable too, but became forgettable as they all sounded like fairly similar love songs.
Wasn't my music and now it isn't too, but great songs.
This was an alright album even though it contains my favorite Dusty Springfield song, "Son of a Preacher Man". I did find some other songs that were great, but most did not stick with me. I would recommend this album if you really like soul music. Favorite Song(s): "Son of a Preacher Man", "Don't Forget About Me", "Breakfast in Bed"
Classic Pulp Fiction song, otherwise so-so
Son of a preacher man! Dusty Springfield is another name that I've heard a bunch, but (perhaps embarrassingly) if you had sat me down and tried to ask me anything what I knew about her, I probably would have said "... was she in Buffalo Springfield?" (No. She was not.) Let's try some of this "blue-eyed soul" (which is a really weird name for a genre lmao) I like the 60s production/orchestration a lot in these songs. "The Windmills of Your Mind" -- Autumn Leaves!!! Yoooooo i literally know her "What Do You Do When Love Dies" -- BANGER. Idk, this one is hard for me to rate because I enjoyed it, but it kinda slid in to the background a bit at parts, I'm gonna go with a strong 3 stars.
All round nice album, not something I'd normally listen to but enjoyed it
I like her voice (although there were a few Cilla-ish moments on one of the tracks). Son of a Preacher Man is the standout here - a classic. Everything else is good, but not super memorable.
I really enjoy her voice and really enjoyed this album. I know we've heard her before and spoke highly of her on my first review. I feel like she would have made a great Motown singer and even think she sounds a bit like Aretha. Relax ya'll, I said a bit. I know there's only one Queen. Enjoyed the entire listen. Nothing I will download into my library, but I certainly wouldn't turn her off either. Very good album to have playing in the background while working. Good stuff. I'm going with a 3.5 and may have to relisten to the first album we heard off this list.
3.5 Alright, let’s go Dusty, this is what I’m talking about! After listening to her underwhelming and dated debut, it really feels like she found a sense of her own identity here. Across the board, there’s so much more personality, passion, and atmosphere to the music compared to what previously felt like a disconnected assortment of pop singles. Even if a lot of the songs here are still covers, she breathes life into each and every one as if they’re her own with her absolutely captivating voice and bravado, to the point where I was reminded of the legendary pop diva Aretha Franklin herself at times. That may be a bit of a stretch, but supposedly Elton John even once referred to Dusty as “the greatest white singer there ever has been”. The racial asterisk is a little funny to me, but I see where he’s coming from - it’s great, but not quite Aretha levels. Still, this is a very enjoyable listen and it quickly commanded my respect for her as a performer and pop icon - this is a woman who deserves way more recognition. It’s not quite enough to sway me into the 4+ territory - at least for now - but this definitely won’t be the last time I give her music a spin.
Listening notes...

I didn’t know she sang son of a preacher man. Ok listen, definitely a 1969 time capsule sound.
Despite son of a preacher man I'd say this is mid to me. It's good, but I wouldn't listen to it again
Great singer.
I enjoyed this. I think she had a lovely vocal style. 3*
Bit what I would qualify as 'zeikmuziek' at the end, first half of th album was nice.
More bland then I was going for but it was listenable enough
Surprisingly pleasant!
Nice voice.
Old timey
Would I listen to this album again? No. First time hearing the full album? Yes. Were there any songs I skipped? No. Comments? Great voice, catchy songs. Favourite Songs? Son of a Preacher Man / The Windmills of your Mind
Bien. American PopR&Bblue-eyed soul.3
It's odd how much this just sounds like background music. Maybe it's the vibe is tight and easy to listen to. I expected this to stand out to me more. I'll add this to the "I may have missed something" pile.
Album sounded better on a car stereo than headphones. When I was younger my friend thought the song was Son of a Creature Man.
Omg I Love it Zu 100% mein vibe Würde 5 Sterne vergeben
Pretty good, not really my thing but still fairly enjoyable. Son of a preacher man and windmills of your mind definitely stand out more than the other songs to me. A lot of this album feels like music that might be used in a romcom but windmills of your mind has sort of a bond film sound that is pretty cool.
Surprisingly an okay album. Liked it more than I thought I would
Klimatyczna
I enjoyed it. A slightly watered down Nancy Sinatra.
What a voice. Listened on a lazy Sunday morning. Perfect
Loved son of a preacher man and don't forget about me, the album surprised me with its sound and I found parts of it quite enjoyable.
Son of a Preacher Man is pretty iconic in Pulp Fiction. The album is overall pleasant, but the vocals can get kind of melodramatic, and the arrangements feel conventional. I wouldn’t really come back to the whole album.
One or two good songs sadly don't make an album. It was not bad, but I wouldn't pick it myself.
I don't know... It just doesn't feel interesting to me. I swear I have heard trscks like these before on here. It's more of the same. The technical execution is really good but I don't think that would be enough on it's own to make a really great album.
A solid piece here, beutifuly written and recorded. However, let's not forget this is simply Cristina Aguilera in the 60s. This is just pure manufactured pop
Sure. It's pretty chill and nice. I don't get much from this type of music usually, but it made for some very enjoyable background music today. Much better than that other Dusty album on this list I forgot the name of.
I liked this. But is it something I'm going to lay sleepless over and think about all the time? No. I think it's a bit unfair towards the album because it's so hard for me to relate to this properly, so giving it more than 3 or weak 4 at tops is just not going to happen. Still, there is a feeling that it might deserve more.
This was a pleasant album, Dusty's voice is really something special. "Son Of A Preacher Man" is a great track however I feel like the rest is just not as good as other (mostly black american) soul. Nice album but there is so much better albums out there from this era with this type of music.
Relaxing and pleasant with a glittery, smoky sound. Nothing especially stands out, to the point that it borders on boring, but a very solid easy-listening type of album. Best song: I Can't Make It Alone
If I waked n baked, this is the album I’d listen to. This is what we call pancake makin music (good).
Felt sappy at first but I started vibing. Might take a bit of irony for me to put it on, but I get it. Massive track list! Hard to believe this was ‘69! Remember for a happy day around the house.
I’m reminded of people who are like “we love Taylor swift because she shares about her life in her songs!” And what a fascinating life this woman must have had
It's not what I usually listen to but was definitely a pleasant listen
Classic soul album
Couple of songs were great. I did like it. Probably a 3.5, not a 4 so here it gets 3.
Her voice is beautiful but every song on this album except Son of a Preacher Man sounds exactly the same. It was so boring during my morning commute it made me sleepy.
- very nice voice - enjoyable to listen to
It's fine!
It’s alright. Only really liked The Windmills of Your Mind for the classic Bond vibes. The rest was pretty generic
Classy after-dark lounge music from the 60 songstress.
3.4
On a scale of 1 to Dusty Springfield, how bad was your breakup?
Dusty Springfield is an icon of the swinging 60s with an unforgettable voice but this album isn’t really all that memorable apart from the standout songs “Son of a Preacher Man” and “The Windmills of Your Mind”.
Very soothing old timey music
Got some famous hits in there, but really it sounds pretty typical for the era.
Clearly her voice was fully displayed this album, but the melodies could have been more impressive.
They are good but not great
Was ok not big fan of her voice
Pleasant, soulful listening.
Niet echt mijn genre
Son of a preacher man is a great song. The rest of the album lacks that attitude.
Está muy bien. Simplemente no es mí estilo.
Catchy but not really my thing.
Casey - test to see where notes show up
It’s alright, nothing memorable besides son of a preacher man.
Good album, fun songs. I knew a couple of them.
I was surprised by this one. I'm sure everyone's familiar with the track "Son of a Preacher Man", which is an amazing track, so I was glad to see that on here. Side 2 of the record has some traces of psychedelia as well which I appreciate. Blue-eyed soul can be a bit boring, but Dusty put her own spin on some of these tracks.
There's nothing particularly "wrong" with this album its just a bit on the boring side. When I saw this was the artist who did son of a preacher man it kind of peaked my interest but sadly that song was the peak of my interest. When the music is more upbeat and Dusty is showing of her vocal talent its ok but overall there's large sections where it's just slow and dull. Overall I think its a 2.5 but I'll round it up to a 3.
Grand
Good, pretty easy listening.
Couple of good tracks besides the big hit, Son of a Preacher Man. Which is a tremendous song stand alone
3/5. Some nice soul-country (?) with a couple great tracks. Not my favorite genre so it felt a little taxing with some songs, and some just forgettable. Might take a few more listens but right now, just another one down. Not a bad listen, just not riveting.
Sweet and light 60s songs.
No too sweet, has son of a preacher man, but faded into the background a bit for me.
Dusty has a beautiful voice.
🩷
3.7 enjoyable but not something I would put on by myself but beautiful album
Pleasant, I enjoyed listening to it. Not sure about acquiring it.
Its really not my vibe, but I can appreciate the talent. As with my Bob Marley review, it really exemplifies a genre which is why its on this list I guess
Ihan jees. Ehkä vähä liian pitkä, loppua kohde vähä lässähti.
Kepeä, heleä, upea Dusty!
Hits from the bong
Slow white-soul. It’s ok. Son of a Preacher Man is of course a banger, the rest is delightful.
Classic 60s R&B/Soul album. Highlight is certainly "Son of a Preacher Man". Some solid tracks, but also some that seem dated by now. After listening to a couple of timeless classics, this one hit me a little less than it could have. It's a good album, but overshadowed by others.
Some good songs.
Decent blues album.
The main song on this album is why I know of dusty Springfield. Never would have thought she was an English singer based on the soul aspect. This is the second album I’ve had of hers and felt like her music is good old school pop soul. It is worth revisiting and son of a preacher man will always have that pulp fiction memory. 6.6/10
Bug voice and very lush instrumentation
Jediný text, který trochu vybočoval je The Windmills Of Your Mind – není to tak explicitně… heterosexuální. Nejlepší písničky: The Windmills Of Your Mind (dramatické, kreativní text) Nejhorší písničky: Breakfast In Bed (text) Hodnocení: 6/10 (moc pěkný a uklidňující hlas, ale texty to srazily)
Traditional Dusty. Enjoyable but not something I would call exceptional. Not sure if I would listen again 5/10
I listened to the album and then I read details about it. I have to agree with initial reviews - meh. I don't get what retrospective reviewers say and why this album is thought by some to be so great. I felt her earlier album on this list was better. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic. It still holds up well. Many of the other songs don't. Or they're missing the soul that is supposed to be in this soul album. I'm not saying it's a bad album, I'm just not sure what all the fuss is about.
I will admit that this album ended up feeling like cool background music. Dusty has great pipes, and the musicianship backing her is strong, but I didn't find anything super super memorable. Possibly unique for 1969 in that this felt like a throwback to late 50s early 60s. It's not rock, it's not psychedelic, it's not electric folk... It's soulful, R&B, and yet somehow very very white.
Highlights: "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "In the Land of Make Believe," "Just A Little Lovin'" It bears repeating that there is no Diana Ross on this 1,001 albums list. None. Furthermore, this is a compilation album of other songwriters. Fuck off. Some great musical ideas, and Dusty's strong performances have lots of range and character. Minus points for evidently being culturally toxic enough to help whitewash this list.
Honestly, besides "Son of a Preacher Man" the rest of the album is pretty bland. It's unfortunate because her voice is lovely and deserves better.
Most of the Album is pretty good, this is the type of music I grew up with a lot. A lot of the songs aren't particularly memorable upon first listening and a lot of them are quite samey, I'd even say there are one or two I just didn't vibe with. The Windmills of Your Mind is quite the banger and is refreshingly different for this album, it made the playlist. Another favourite was In the Land of Make Believe. With no outright bad songs and even a few great ones, there's worse ways to spend your time. Feeling a strong 6, to a light 7 as Fantano would say.
Dusty has a great voice, the Memphis sound and soul style fit her well, as evidenced by none other than “Son of a Preacher Man.” No, really, there is no other evidence on this album. That songs stands alone and stands out, with nothing else delivering that soul, groove, or excitement. And no wonder - these 11 songs were written by 14 different people, none of them Dusty Springfield or the musicians playing on the tracks. For some reason it reminds me of the greeting card company in “500 Days of Summer” as a building full of writers with potential are churning out uninspired drivel. A five-star song on a three-star album.
Dusty has a really good voice. One of the best albums of all time (as several critics wrote)? Not even close. The all time great thin mg Dusty did was to convince Atlantic records to sign Led Zeppelin.
Preacher Man elevates this a lot
Not as strong as her debut, despite the incredible Son of a Preacher Man and Windmills of my Mind. I feel like the mixing on her voice made it not quite as strong which was a bit of a shame
lovely
Sultry and fun quick listen that I'll forget in no time.
It's good, but not for me.
People may knock her, but she was a white woman with soul.
A classic album by a classic singer. Beautiful front to back.
Liked this album much more than I thought I would. Dusty's voice is wonderful throughout. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic but other standouts for me were The Windmills of Your Mind and No Easy Way Down.
I honestly don’t get what people find so great about dusty springfield, it’s alright pop certainally listenable and enjoyable but not amazing or anything in my opinion 3/5
3.5/5
Pretty good but not really my kind of thing. Preacher Man is a banger.
This was fine. I liked Son of a Preacher Man and The Windmills of Your Mind. The other songs didn't stand out too much to me.
It was vibey to take a walk to this one but I probably wouldnt listen to this type of pop music normally.
Not bad! Some real sappy stuff but also some pretty great songs.
Yes it's a classic, love her voice but at times it is - sorry - a bit plodding.
A lot of enjoyable songs and great voice.
Beautiful voice, just had a few tracks that grabbed me.
An emotional-sounding soul record that gave me more than I was expecting. Dusty Springfield's voice effortlessly glides through the arrangements with richness and depth. Her vocal control, combined with a subtle yet powerful delivery works very well in the songs. The standout track and one that defines this album is undoubtedly "Son of a Preacher Man." This iconic song remains one of Dusty Springfield's signature tunes, with its infectious melody and charm. The song's sultry atmosphere, coupled with Springfield's raw and emotive vocals, make it a highlight on the album. Tracks like "Breakfast in Bed," "Just One Smile," and "So Much Love" exhibit her ability to interpret various soul-related musical styles with a lot of authenticity. Whether she's belting out powerful notes or delivering delicate, nuanced phrasing, Dusty Springfield's voice shines brightly. Some could however say there is room for more variation, given her talents as a singer. The production was handled by Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, and Tom Dowd, along with an ensemble of other musicians. The sound is a fusion of strings, horns, and groovy rhythms. Doing a decent job of covering Dusty's vocals. The lyrics on "Dusty in Memphis" delve into themes of love, heartbreak, longing, and self-discovery. Dusty Springfield's ability to convey the emotions embedded within the songs is definitely solid but these themes and it's lyrical content do start to drag on quite quickly. Overall it's a solid 60's release to relax to and it does justify a place on the essential albums list.
Rauhallista ja aika tunnelmallista. Mut vähän sillein rokahtavasti. Ihan jepa perus
Kind of the same as the last Dusty album.
7/10
Super romantic.
Solid album. Really beautiful voice! 3/5
6/11
Mellow and very clean. Good music to smoke and write memoirs to.
Album 45 of 1 Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis Favorite Track : Son of a Preacher Man Rating : 3 / 5 Pleasant enough. Nothing that changed my being, but fine vocals. The overall production and nuance of the songs seems dated at times, but in a good way.
Dusty does her thing. I’ve heard her thing many many times, and it’s a good sounding thing, of course. But it’s just not my favourite thing.
Preacher man is a good track
This is a decent album. I liked a number of the songs but a number of them were forgettable to me as well. I've never known much of Dusty Springfield's music besides 'Son of a Preacher Man' but she has a great voice. I have to go with a middling rating, since the album was a bit hit and miss to me, there are a couple of really strong songs on here though. Standout Tracks: So Much Love, Son of a Preacher Man, Don't Forget About Me, No Easy Way Down
I love dusty’s voice but - Son of a Preacher Man aside - this doesn’t quite have the songs to match it. Nothing wrong with it but the rest of the album tends to blur together a bit
It was alright, not unpleasant to listen to but not very attention grabbing
Silky smooth voice. Sometimes the songs on the record are a bit cheesy. Highlight is Son of a Preacher Man.
sunny afternoon album
