Flawless, pleasant record

Never had I really listened to a Bossa Nova album; I sure wished I did earlier. The album is a great album to listen to, especially as background music during study and work. Although I can not just name one track that really stands out, I do find myself going back to this album all the time.

Great album. Stan Getz playing is so smooth I love his rhythmic feel. Charlie Byrds bluesier guitar playing is the perfect contrast too. Cool arrangements. First and last songs are my favorite. Love the double bass on Bahia

One of my favs! Charlie byrds playing is really cool on this. Probably my fav of the 60’s American bossa crossover. A perfect record!

I can’t remember exactly when I crossed over from thinking “Bossanova = Muzak” to “the styles loosely labeled as Bossa Nova = groovy, accessible jazz played by incredibly talented musicians.” But I did, and have never looked back. This album fits the bill, being of course one of the original efforts to popularize (and in this case reproduce) this music in the USA. Sure, it can provide great atmosphere as background music for cocktail hour, but there’s so much to enjoy in every track on close listening. I was much less familiar with this record than some others (Getz/Gilberto for example), but I loved it. A shout-out to the engineer and mixer too - rarely have I enjoyed hard panning so much as when listening to these legends through headphones.

For decades, one of my favorite albums has been Getz/Gilberto. How then, did I miss this wonderful previous work? Getz's saxophone is warm and familiar to me, and I loved the addition of Charlie Byrd's guitar. It definitely feels like jazz meets samba, and so is an apt title. This delightful album made me swoon. Blame it on the bossa nova!

One thing I can say is that this project has made me realize that I like jazz. At least as much as any genre. Jazz encompasses a wide range like any other genre. Stan Getz is truly one of my favorites. I adore this album. Those smooth bossa nova beats have me drifting off into some blissful place. I definitely need to spend more time with music like this.

Great background music. Good energy and consistent

Generally speaking I don't know exactly how to judge jazz, however I loved the "sweetness" of the sax it wasn't agressive or too passive, it was just on point. The timing of the percussions also was perfect, really it was one of the best jazz albums.

I mean, is this a complete white colonization of samba, or is this jazzy/chilly heaven? Samba/bosa nova is itself a product of colonization! Can a colonial art form be further colonized? Any way, five stars for the chill factor, but I reserve the right to critique and update based on cultural violence.

Sadly this arrived on a rainy day, not the best weather for Jazz Samba, but still great playing. Smooth and mellow to a fault.

I imagine this listening to this album playing at a pub while sipping some cocktail. A very unconventional jazz album with some excellent, and calming melodies. As calming as it is, it is one that beckons you to the dance floor in a way that is impossible to resist. This has to be a staple in the Jazz Samba movement.

Never heard of this band but this is a solid jazz album. It's a perfect Sunday afternoon album. I throughly enjoyed sitting back, relaxing, and just listening to this album. Will definitely be playing this album again. 7/10.

Before listening: The layout, colours and font of this album cover are really cool. I’ve never heard of this album before, so I have no idea what to expect aside from it being jazz. After: It was beautiful music, but not really my thing. I can appreciate the artistic value of the album, but I don’t think I’m all that interested in listening another time. This was definitely a great soundtrack for a nature walk though.

I had never heard this before. Both names were familiar. I’ll never understand the bossa nova craze. There’s nothing wrong with it and I enjoy this album. It just seems like a lot of the same thing over and over. Although I feel the same way about reggae. And maybe there’s a similarity there I’m missing. I don’t dislike either genre. Just not my go to. Track 4 is my favorite so far. Ok. The more this album goes the more I enjoy it. Every instrument is audible and if I shift focus I can concentrate and pick out a part, but at the same time it’s a big meld of music and just gels and works. So in 1962 dancing with adult couples was still thing right? Because this last track feels very dance club.

Это прям такая бодренькая самба, латина, под неё сразу представляется модный клуб в каком-нибудь Сен-Тропе, а где-то на фоне второпях бегает жандарм Крюшо! Очень гуляющая, ритмичная, живенькая штука. Ладно, четвёрочка, так и быть.

Samba music is subtle. It feels like music made by people who are too hot to get overly demonstrative but to sexy not to make music that gets right in your hips. This is a great but not earth shattering example of that. Was perfect for the heatwave but the Upper Richmond Road is not the copra cabana.

When I reviewed Stan Getz's collaboration with Gilberto, I said the music was good for sitting around and doing work to. I think that goes for his collaboration with Charlie Byrd. Some of these songs are over before I even knew they began, as the album is only 33 minutes long. This is another album that may not benefit from the fact I am over 900 albums into this project. I had no idea this music started the bossa nova craze in America, though the Latin rhythms do set this apart from other jazz albums I have heard. According to my tracker, I have heard 57 jazz albums. That's a lot of jazz for a person who is not an expert on what jazz should sound like or if it's good/bad jazz that I am hearing. I really like the guitar interplay with the sax on here. The bossa nova sound is really nailed here and this is also a good album to listen to when doing work or just wanting to hear something in the background. I apparently like Stan Getz's work.

My go-to album is Getz/Gilberto featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim (Verve, 1963), which makes this album someone redundant for this kind of list. But yeah, it's nearly as great.

A really cozy jazz album. Didn't have a stand-out favorite but enjoyed it start to finish.

The performance on this record is simply amazing. The relaxed bossa nova style is reminiscent of cool jazz but doesn't disappoint with satisfyingly complex melodies. It is certainly worthy of the list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die. I'm not sure why this isn't correctly billed as Stan Getz AND Charlie Byrd for the 1001 albums list as Byrd's arrangements and guitar are critical to this recording.

Not my usual genre, but musically and technically very interesting. It makes me want to dance around like Kristen Wiig impersonating Liza Minelli. Modern music rarely has brass or woodwinds, and Getz on the tenor sax is as smooth as it gets. Samba Triste was absolutely gorgeous.

Foundational piece in the bossa nova movement of the early 60’s. Charlie Byrd brought the songs and the arrangements, played with local musicians including his brother. The next wave would bring Brazil’s leading lights into the picture and amp up the craze. I don’t think people today realize how big BN music was in the mid sixties. This is beautifully played a unified record, and well worth a listen.

At first I thought this was cool, but it didn't blow my mind. Then I found myself nodding my head. Then it was over and I was sad because I wanted more.

A great collaborative album, one minute the guitar gets to shine, the next it's the saxophone.

My first girlfriend was beautiful and Brazilian, just like this record.

Generally a pleasant listen. No glaring flaws, just light and fun tunes. Byrd's guitar playing was solid and Getz is of course a beast on that sax (especially the tone of his sax is peak).

Stan Getz it! Perfect summer vibe. Cocktail in hand, dancing around the pool bar, and enjoying the lightness of life - then you realize the album is over, and you wake up again in reality. Ready to rewind the album and start feeling the cool breeze again...

Stan Getz's saxophone over bossa nova rhythms — warm, unhurried, the kind of thing you put on in the evening and run again without thinking about it. I did exactly that. I later found out he recorded an album with João Gilberto, Bebel's father. Of course he did. This is the same warm world. 4/5 — good enough to run multiple times.

If I were to enjoy jazz, this is the jazz I would enjoy. Smooth sax and smoother sax. Did get redundant as jazz tends to do, but easy on the ears.

From these beautiful bossa nova grooves, you wouldn't think of how badly Getz was struggling with addiction behind the scenes. He and Byrd managed to create one of the most celebrated albums of all time while also pushing bossa nova to an American audience; this kind of music can only ever be produced by inspired individuals- shout-out to Felix Grant. Finding out also that this album was the result of both of them listening to Gilberto is so cool; I'd only recently discovered Gilberto and fell in love with 'O Amor, O Sorriso e a Flor', and to think that it was probably that album that inspired this. The Chemistry between these two is so clear, they complement each other so well, just listening currently just hits something in my brain. It manages to create such a relaxing atmosphere while also being the right amount of groovy. I'm currently listening to the stereo version of the album which has been mixed so well compared to how shoddy a lot of stereo mixes of older albums are. Getz playing the sax in the left, Byrd playing his guitar in the right and the percussion balanced between the two, none are louder than the other and just flow so well. Today you have musicians switch and divert to different style of music to appeal to wider audiences while lacking authenticity, meanwhile, you can tell that both Getz and Byrd has such an appreciation for Brazillian bossa nova and wanted to do this project right, to celebrate the genre rather than just mimic it.

Bossa nova by jazz legends. Still prefer original flavour but pretty good anyway.

Stan Getz is not exactly a worldbreaking Jazz dude, but he sure did a lot on the exposure front. This album (to say nothing of That Other One) may well have gone a long way to introducing this sort of music to bland white america. Certainly there is a long long long history of that… when Chef Boy-ar-dee first came about, Italian was still seen as exotic. Teaming with Byrd, Getz is taking the samba vibe and creating something just a bit more accessible. And we can talk appropration… that's a fair discussion for work like this… but honestly, with how deep Getz gets into the genre, how he pulled folks like the Gilbertos up the ladder with him, it really does feel more like love of that vibe, the cool breeze across a hot sky, the “saudade” adjacent vibes… it is like getting a little miniature vacation on your hi-fi. Great little album, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good vibe for me

Two Stan Getz albums three days apart?! This is a nice album. The samba groove has intricacy to it, but it is played with such lightness. This would be fun to dance to, if I knew how to samba. Another great Getz album cover too. I think I prefer Getz/Gilberto over this album though because I like the more expressive saxophone playing & the fantastic vocals by João and Astrud Gilberto, and I honestly just think the music has a bit more heart to it than this does. Getz and Charlie Byrd definitely demonstrate musical proficiency on this album, but it could use a little bit more character/passion to be a five star for me.

this is perhaps the least offensive album of all time. i just can’t imagine anyone asking you to turn this album off or getting mad that it’s on. but it also isn’t super exciting either. this is like the peak of background music, it almost completely fades away. i didn’t even realize the album ended for 20 minutes. did download two songs.

Definitely will listen to more by Stan Getz. This was nice.

The chances of Brazil meeting USA at the World Cup look pretty unlikely so will have to make do with this. I really hope the hosts get through their group only to get smashed by Iran in the last 32. Great record fwiw.

I recognize the quality of this far more than I actually enjoy it. I much prefer the funk/soul jazz of the late ‘60s, (Miles, Herbie, etc.) and in comparison to that, this doesn’t do much for me. But if not comparing it to other jazz styles, it’s fairly enjoyable, even if not exciting, and the skill and tunefulness of the players is definitely top-notch. 3.5/5 stars, rounding up.

Such a lovely record. The sounds and grooves that they layer so pragmatically throughout this one is spot on. This is the type of jazz I love to see live out in a small pub somewhere. Legendary jazz musicians making an incredible work of art - awesome album.

It’s hard not to enjoy Jazz like this, especially when it’s performed by two titans of the genre like Getz and Bird. Breezy compositions fit for dancing, lounging, and cool summer mornings. Very chill.

I love Stan Getz for The Girl from Ipanema. This one has it's share of good tunes, but like the Getz/Gilberto record, I feel that the style and arrangement of the music gets to sound samey. The minimalism of these records are a strength and a weakness.

I am experiencing this record as a kind of sequel to the Getz/Gilberto record that I heard a number of days ago, but this actually came out a couple years earlier. In contrast to that album, this record sounds more like a conventional jazz album, probably because the absence of vocals. It's as enjoyable as that later record though. I'm enjoying the songs and the performance of the musicians is good. I'm definitely going to listen to this again and would pick it up at a fairly reasonable price.

It's better than I expected; it must be the jazz elements that enhanced "Jazz Samba". However, if it didn't have samba, it would be boring. There is already a boatload of jazz albums from the 60s. So, both genres are what make "Jazz Samba" a good album. That's something different for me today. 4 stars for "Jazz Samba".

We have the Jazz Samba encore album, but I've never heard this one.

It sounds like I'm on a beach in paradise at night and this band plays a few songs at a dreamy dive bar and there's only like 12 or 13 people there and my feet are in the sand and I can hear the ocean and I'm like hell yeah this is nice music

Loved bits, obviously all sounds very similar. But great times

This is some killer jazz. This is what I hear walking down Burbon Street. That French Quarter shit, playing right on top of some Boosie or Webbie (I know it's Brazilian Jazz, but still.) This is what my grandma has put on when we play dominos. This is what is playing when I walk into my service's yearly gala. The whole album is luxurious, fun, and relaxing.

Great jazz once again by Mr. Getz.

Enjoyed this

Perfect listening for a languid, hot Sunday afternoon sat in the garden, which is how I experienced it. Another easy listening jazz album that is short and sweet, and the backing is there in an unassuming way to let the sax do its thing. A shame some bellend was intermittently flying his drone around overhead, slightly detracted from the vibe.

Some damn good cocktail lounge jazz- that’s not a bad thing or slight on it. It’s great and sounds so good for 1962!

Quite a contrast from the Sepultura from a couple of picks ago. This I can pretty easily put on and leave on. That's a pro and a con because that means it's really good background music. Probably not what Stan Getz and crew were hoping for when they made it. I'll definitely be coming back to it in the future though.

I had a teacher in high school who was the ideal mix of stodgy traditionalist and laid-back dude. He was a moderate Republican (we still made them in those days) with approximately the same personality as Woody from Toy Story. He had high moral standards, yet you could also never quite guess when he would come down on you for something or when he would let his slide. A club I was a part of met in his room and that sort of became my substitute locker and hangout area through the day. I would often show up early, put on music, and finish music before the day began. One day he came in and asked what was playing and I absent-mindedly replied, “Bitches Brew.” I looked up and I think we realized at the same time that I had said “bitches” around a teacher. His mouth hung open for a moment and then he smiled, nodded his head, and said, “All right!” Turned out he mostly listened to jazz at home, though more in the “Kind of Blue” mode. So that became a place we usually played jazz in the morning. One day one of the other kids walked in when I had Dave Brubeck on. He was definitely more of a metalhead and he heard was playing and he said, “Um, is this a MIDI?” I’m still not sure if it was sarcastic or not. Anyway, I just turned it off… today, I might have turned it up higher and asked him to listen for the undeniably organic elements of Brubeck and his band, even if I get that the melodies can be a little tinkle-tinkle. I had kind of the same reaction to this record. Too smooth, too clean. I preferred the Getz/Gilberto where the voices (though also very smooth) ground the sound in some particular time and place. I ended up giving that one a four, but I probably talked it down from a five — I just didn’t enjoy it quite enough. This is a three I talked up to a four because of how much I liked the guitar parts and especially the”Bahia.” Still not my preferred kind of jazz, but certainly not a MIDI.

I liked it very much on my way to a funeral. 8.5/10

Another banger. I’ll admit I knew this album already, but it’s just so gorgeous and peaceful. I actually accidentally listened to it twice today because I was just chillin so hard

The samba added a lot to the jazz! I enjoyed this over most of the jazz albums, and I think the combination/fusion was right up my alley.

Great musicians, excellent recording. I ended up listening to my equipment more than the music. I guess I'll never be a jazz guy.

Take me to a smoky backroom bar, Stan and Charlie. Mmm! Very smooth and swanky. While I prefer my jazz (and samba for that matter) a lot louder and wilder, I appreciated this offering and could see myself nodding along to it in a jazz room. 7/10

It was nice music, definitely a pleasant soundtrack on a summer day. Can't help thinking that there's surely an even better album of Brazilian jazz out there if we actually looked in Brazil. Very lovely soft sax playing by Getz which definitely has inspired a lot of jazz musicians (me included if I count). Didn't convey the most emotion (in my opinion) though, which is something I'm looking for in music at the moment! Top track: Chega De Saudade... But this is cheating because it wasn't until after I heard that I realised Spotify had moved on from the album itself. Deserved a special mention nevertheless because I loved the trumpet intro.

I'm a big fan of samba and bossa nova, and I also like Stan Getz to begin with. This sounds like a good album for me to study on guitar, with a couple of songs I recognize as standards. Strong start to the album, not a big fan of the later songs. Getz is very smooth and melodic.
