Reviews (page 6 of 13)

I definitely enjoyed this, very solid background music while working. I know very little about jazz, but I enjoy listening to most of the jazz albums that have come across here.

Love it

Nice smooth sound to it

BOSSA NOVA BAYBEE!!!!! It’s neat that this was the first albums to bring bossa nova into the mainstream in the US.

Bossa Nova/ Jazz Recorded in a single afternoon in a church in washington DC. Great mellow jazz with brazilian influence’s, relaxing and laid back would play again in the background. 7.5

Nice album to relax to. Interesting combo of twangy guitar and sax.

This is delightfully quiet yet dancy jazz. Easy on the ear but swings.

Notable is the fact that this record is about the music itself: 'Desafinado' (Out of Tune), 'Samba Dees Days,' 'Samba Triste' (Sad Samba), 'Samba De Uma Nota So' (One Note Samba), samba being the Afro-Brazilian rhythms that comprise their music. Otherwise, it's about a duck ('O Pato'), luxury ('E Luxo So'), and one of the 26 states of Brazil ('Bahia'). Albums that are known for popularizing a foreign music are less than comfortably a quality export of that music, but Getz, here with Charlie Byrd, appears to have a clean record in this regard, and the musicianship, especially Keter Betts on double bass, is masterful enuf, and the rhythms infectious enuf, to have me coming back. Well done, white guys.

This was beautiful stuff, I thought bossa nova was all boring lounge music but this was really nice. No stand out tracks just well played jazz

Track 3 was my favorite.

It was ok. Background music vibes

Lo-fi. Commercial sounding, still cool

Very easy listen all the way through. It's a wonderful soundtrack to have through day-to-day things

very nice as expected - good background musica

Another album that I never would’ve chosen to listen to, but I did enjoy it. It all sounds like music in the background of a Mad Men style dinner party. I’d spin this if I had slick, dark hair and was trying to seduce my secretary.

Samba De Uma Nota So is already one of my favourite songs so it was really fun to hear a couple other jazz samba tunes

Hard to pick a favourite as they were all somewhat similar. Enjoyed it, but I we definitely background music.

07/04/2025 Lovely chilled, elevator music.

Pretty interesting new genre I added to my liked playlist: Desafinado O Pato E Luxo So

If you’re into Jazz this is a banger

7/10. Very pleasant listen.

regular samba songs. not a huge fan of samba so i can’t rate properly

Hell yeah. Smooth as all hell.

This was a very, very pleasant jazz album to listen to. The Latin flare made it that much better. Chill, thought out and interesting. Not haphazard and random. Feeling generous and giving 4 stars.

Samba curacao nao nao coringa

Pleasant

Definitely also coffee shop music but very lovely coffee shop music. I gave it a 4 and not a 5 because I enjoyed it a lot but it's also not really memorable or compelling. It's just like instrumental coffee shop jazz I don't really know what else to call it. Very short and sweet at a little over 30 minutes and a total pleasure the whole way through. But not a 5 because I think I could've lived without hearing it as lovely as it is.

Very good 60s jazz album. Lovely, laid back

Easy listening. Nothing groundbreaking but this is a feel-good album that helps you relax and unwind. Great for background music.

Makes you thrown into a classic hollywood on the meaning of life

Nice bit of jazz

4/5 Music like this brings me to the mojave desert in the mids of a nuclear winter.

Made me want to lie on the beach with a cocktail.

nice nice study album

My first time listening to bossa nova. Very pleased! Always appreciate a good jazz album. I’d let Stan seduce me.

it's quite nice! Byrd's playing is pretty fun and well suited for the bossa nova style, and all the tracks are nice, calm, and well suited for just being around. it's sunlight pushing through a dusty window on a lazy day where there's just not much you can or wanna do. i do feel as if this sort of diminishes my enjoyment of the music, as "this sounds like being bored!" isn't exactly high praise, but sometimes, all music has to be is pleasant, and this is the definition of the word. do wish there were some vocals though. this version of "One-Note Samba" has me pining for the Muppet Show rendition.

Gorgeous stuff. The mix is a case study in occupying space - can’t believe how quiet the guitar is in the first half relative to the saxophone but how it still cuts in the mix. They were doing some pretty cool stuff even then!!

Samba and Bossa nova is strange. I'll never feel like putting it on, but I'll never want to turn it off. It's just pleasant music that nobody can dislike, which is an amazing feat. I feel like 4 stars is fitting.

does Stan getz ever miss?

I love jazz and look forward to being shown the variety of offerings the genre has.

8.5/10 Feel like I’m not super qualified here, however it spoke to me and I enjoyed it. These cats were cooking. Favorite Song: Samba Dees Days

Very chill album. Not much else to say about this one. Mid 4.

Getz and Byrd nailed it on this one. Every tune is a delight. I was too young to appreciate this in 1962. But, when I started delving into jazz a few years later, this Brazilian influenced jazz really caught my ear. Just brilliant!

Years ago I saw Bossa Nova as kind of a parody of itself. How could anyone possibly like it? It's like eating cheese, with cheese on top, right? Well, no. One of the advantages of world travel, and living past your 20s, is gaining a smidgen of perspective of other cultures and being more comfortable with not knowing stuff. When it comes to enjoying new kinds of music, being a musician can help too. I was into straight jazz and shunned all forms "latin jazz" at first, and had to circle back to wrap my head around this stuff to dig it as more than just background music for sipping cocktails to. It led me back to the fine musicians in Brazil doing amazing stuff from the '70s back to as early as the 1920s. Americans got hip to the "latin craze" in the '50s, with the Bossa Nova offshoot starting essentially with this album and exploding with the Getz/Gilberto album that came after, in '63 (you know, with "Girl From Impanema"). Charlie Byrd is an interesting figure in jazz guitar, a guy who can swing but who plays nylon string guitar with a classical influence. A lot of his stuff was marketed to the "easy listening" genre, but he sounds great here, especially on "Samba Triste". Getz's austere cool jazz approach fits well with this style and he treats the material with reverence and creative improvisations. The rhythm section is in the pocket and unobtrusive. Let me tell you, it takes great effort and skill to make music sound this effortless. Yes these are Americans selling Brazilian music to other Americans. If it leads them to the original Brazilian artists, then they've done Brazilian music a great service. It worked for me. Get over it. Brazilians did. It's a truism that that most non-Brazilians are still going to see Bossa Nova as background music to drink cocktails to. But that's just how it is. Lots of bossas and sambas were written with intense lyrics under oppressive governments and it's a trip to read translations of some of the lyrics. I encourage folks to explore. Joao Gilberto, Nara Leao, Antonio Carlos Jobim are great people to start with IMO. Glad to get a lone bossa nova album on this list after almost all rock albums for the last month.

"genres: jazz, samba" yeah makes sense

Pleasant, smooth, nicely made. I'm entirely uninvested in this kind of stuff and lack the knowledge to make a real vote, but I enjoyed my time and I've given lesser albums 3s so this gets a 4.

Very enjoyable album, although I think it might be more suitable on a balmy summer evening, rather than a chilly spring morning! Not as good as Getz/Gilbreto, but still very impressive musicianship.

Good stuff

Simple rhythms, catchy melodies. A mix of tracks that are fun, romantic and melancholy. Not the greatest gym tunes, but I enjoyed!

Jazz is one of the genres I don't usually listen to, but this was a pleasant listen. I don't see myself actively seeking this album out to listen to again, but if I heard this playing in the background somewhere I'd probably be vibing with it. Edit: I have, in fact, sought this out to listen to it again so I'll bump this rating up by one star.

Very easy listen while working.

Possibly my favourite album yet, such a good vibe

Love jazz love a fun cocktail hour album

This album is just what it says on the box - jazz samba. We get samba music (at least some of it I recognize) with a jazz interpretation of it. Sometimes we even get some players playing samba rhythms while others swing. It works really well and it's a great fun listen.

Album 688 of 1001 Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba (1962) Rating : 3.5 / 5 A nice blend of samba and jazz which played a pivotal role in popularizing bossa nova in the United States. A nice, relaxing listen.

Very pleasant easy listening

a bunch of good chill tunes

Hello Stan Getz

As Barry B Benson once said “you like jazz?” Yes Barry I do

"Jazz" and "Samba" are two words put together that gave me some cause for concern. But it turns out this concern was unjustified, as this album was sublime. It didn't quite tip me over the edge for a full 5 stars, as nothing in particular stood out. However, it's relaxing, smooth, mellow music that I could imagine having on in the background.

Enjoyed it so much that I listened to it four or five times today.

Very enjoyable listen. I dig it. Will listen to this again in the future.

From minute 1 to minute 32, this album sounded like it was doing a sex on me and I rather enjoyed it

Too smooth. Save some for the rest of us, Stan!

Go lättlyssnad jazz

bought the vinyl at a sale without knowing a thing about it

A lesson in smooth. Cool to see how Getz started getting into samba before the Girl From Ipanema, collabs with Jobim and Gilberto. You can still hear some of that "getting to know the style" type vibe in this, like experimenting. Also, as far as jazz goes, this is like the polar opposite to the John Zorn Spy Vs. Spy that I had on this list immediately before this album. Short sweet and pleasant.

所以samba就是节奏里的沙锤和小鼓么

Loved this album, although I will say the songs start to blend together a bit. I’ll chalk this up to me not having a ton of familiarity with the genre. Excellent nonetheless.

Don't forget that there was a time where the simple notion of Bossa Nova would send jazz hounds into a fenzy.

I always forget that Stan Getz was American. But I can't boycott his sweet bossa nova sounds.

Charlie Byrd & Stan Getz - Jazz Samba As someone who enjoys listening to jazz AND bossa nova, this album is a match made in heaven. I already liked Getz's music after listening to his collab with "Gilberto", and just like that collab, this album offers something to the table with it's rich and natural tone to it. It's great that for once at a time we get to take a break from english-speaking music and listen to other cultures out there, especially to those that are underrated. And it gives a voice to those who wanted to bring art to music but were never heard, if it wasn't for this website, I would've never heard Stan Getz ever. Overall, this is great!! 1.- Desafinado = 9/10 2.- Samba Dees Days = 9/10 3.- O Pato = 8/10 4.- Samba Triste = 9/10 5.- Samba De Uma Nota So = 9/10 6.- E Luxo So = 8/10 7.- Bahia = 10/10 FINAL SCORE: 8.8/10

Lovely and easy

I do love the work of Stan Getz, and Byrd is a perfect pairing for his style. Getz's sax is so fluid and elegant throughout. This is a beautiful jazz album that flew by too fast while I was listening to it 4/5

Just what its says - Jazz Samba - great for what it is

Ended up listening to it multiple times because it was really good and I just thought it was a never-ending album

The title already made me suspicious - Jazz and Samba most certainly do not belong to my favourite genres. Imagine my surprise that this is, in fact, quite a wonderful, laid back album that lends itself to playing in the background. ... which it will do again, in the days and weeks to come 4/5.

9/1089 - Byrd's guitar playing is really creative and compliments the other instruments well. Not a fan of Getz's sound (way too much subtone, almost like a classical saxophone player!). Overall a cool introduction of Bossa Nova to U.S. audiences.

Overall: 7/10 I think I preferred this one over the Gilberto collab. This album flew by so quickly that I didn't even realize I'd listened to the whole thing! Getz's saxophone playing is incredible and so relaxing to listen to. Definitley listen to this if you're a big jazz fan. Fav Song: Desafinado Least Fav Song: O Pato

Thank God for Stan Getz and his trips to S America the influence each had on the other is a joy to listen to and bossa nova one of my favorite genres-I was obsessed all thru the 90s at times it was all I listened to. This album gets a 4 from me bc sometimes I am too generous as I gush over musicians I love : )

This isn't really my preferred type of music at all - but I enjoyed it! It's nice sounding jazz!

I'd not heard this album before, but even on a first listen, it feels like an old familiar friend. Seems like every movie from the sixties had a brief interlude with some Jazz Samba, Saxophone and Marimba soundtrack. And that's the problem. The music here is great, but it's been spoiled slightly by too much cheesy over-use. I can seem like just elevator mood music, but it's actually so much more.

Not something I would intentionally put on so when stuff like this arrives on my list it’s a real joy to listen to something outside my comfort zone. Also convinces me that I should broaden my musical tastes but so much music out there and so little time etc etc. But having now listened this is one album I would buy. Big thing to strike me was the recording quality considering this album goes back to 1962. I streamed the album on Apple Music. It was a lossless version and wow did it sound great. I sometimes struggle to hear a difference between lossy and lossless versions of the same album but in this case it was night and day. A wonderful audio experience. 4/5 24/1/25

Nice instrumental album. Would enjoy listening in a nice restaurant.

Stan Getz is my all-around favorite saxophonist and this album is superb, though I actually prefer his earlier non-bossy nova work. This is vivacious and danceable.

Really enjoyed the album. Charlie Byrd's finger picking was very nice and also enjoyed Stan's sax. Standouts were Samba Dees Days and O Pato.

- I know very little about jazz, but this was a super pleasant listening experience. Apparently this album was the birth of the bossa nova craze and while I am sure it can get derivative, I have no complaints. - The Larin influences are obvious but a nice change of pace from other jazz styles. - Very much felt like I should be playing a chill Nintendo game.

i'd find myself listening to this album when i'm doing other things

Cool tunes.

4 great jazz record

Better than the Beatles

I do like Stan Getz. One of the few jazz albums I bought in my youth was one of his but it wasn't this one. This is damned good however.

Hell yeah more albums need their genre included in the title

Smooth. Not something I'd put on casually but it's a nice listen.

It’s freezing cold today, so this album felt like a little out of place, but I think the second best place to listen to this album other than a tropical beach is in the cold, actually, because it feels like a nice warm blanket and puts a smile on your face. Just a pleasant album all around :)

After starting this plague year with a persistent head cold that was then followed by norovirus so bad, my body tried to eject my stomach into the toilet, HOT DAMN was I in need of what felt like cool beach breezes in musical form.

I guess it's worth bringing up that I'm not really all that much of a jazz person. Like, I have enjoyed what I've heard, but it's not the type of music that I actively seek out if that makes any sense. I will say that for what it is, I did enjoy Jazz Samba. It was pretty pleasant, and I definitely wouldn't mind putting it back on at some point in the future. Probably a 7

This is nice if culturally exploitative.

pretty good if in a bit of a starbucks jazz compilation-y kind of way. good to do chores to.

Solid album, one to listen to again

Classic, 3.9

elegantíssim

Enjoyable start to finish. Nothing pulling me to jump back in right away, but seemed good smooth jazz.

good jamz

Really liked it nut not too familiar with jazz so I can't give my opinon

chill jazz with no vocals

I liked the album, but a bit too much the same.

Good sambas and bossa nova. Good dinner music but not something I would usually reach for.

Samba soul!

If the 1960s jazz album has some random piece of abstract modern art on it you know you’re in for a treat. Bossa Nova might be the most accessible form of world music, because I’ve never met anyone who hates it. It’s easy it’s cool it’s nice. I just wish it was MORE, I tend to like my Brazilian music more exciting and angry. Hey Gilberto Gil isn’t on this list, that’s a shame, Marginalia II is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Great background music to listen to while relaxing or trying to focus.

Bra skiva, har aldrig lyssnat igenom hela förut.

Som grädde i öronen. Två favoriter som hjälps åt. 4+

It's smooth, low-volume. Yea

Nice, smooth jazz album

This is great productivity music. Will add to the rotation. 4/5

8/10… bossa nova, jazz

This is feel-good stuff.

This is the kind of "jazz" I can get into. Laid back and rhythmic enough to be relaxing, yet varied enough to not turn into elevator music. Plus, there is no piano...always worth an extra star in my book.

a delightful listen

Album très simple à écouter les morceaux s'enchaine bien sans que l'on s'ennuie. Le son est bien d'époque, les oreilles en sont ravie !

Great version of Desafinado, and no doubt an influential album in bringing bossa nova into the mainstream. Maybe not my favourite Stan Getz though.

I could listen to Stan Getz all day, one of the finest saxophone players ever to grace the planet. It's a lovely album, but not quite top of the top for me.

Pixar soundtrack core but ima good jazzy way

Sabroso, divertido y cortito. Buena samba. Y el amigo Stan Gertz es un perro musicazo, qué bárbaro.

Another one that, to me, is perfectly lovely background music but slips my mind as soon as the album turns off. Great at what it does, awful at sticking power.

Really enjoyed this, superb samba-y jazz. Mad eme feel like I was wafting around in the background of a Man From.Uncle party scene from the sixties

Loved it

Cool, chill, mellow. Left it on repeat for most of the work day. Makes for some relaxing background music.

Buoyantbbackground breathing break

Samba Fucks

The summer breeze I needed on this winter day

Incredibly accessible, groovy, functions equally well for background music as for active listening. 4 repeat loops out of 5 🔃🔃🔃🔃

samba and jazz have my heart

Легкий джаз, понравились партии меди, но есть однообразные моменты,

Beautiful jazz by a master... one for my play list

Such a chilled and easy to listen to album I was sad it was only 30 minutes

Never heard of this before. Don't know the artists. Didn't know there was a bossa nova craze in America in the 60s. Thought it was great! A couple times it strays a little close to "elevator music" but overall it's really cool.

4.1 - Nice, not too jazzy but jazzy just enough

Outstanding album. I’ve listened to this one a few times and I’m always captivated by it. I love the guitar work by Charlie Byrd and of course Stan Getz’s sax playing.

From the first notes of the Stan Getz's saxophone on opener "Desafinado", my mind wandered to a warm, cloudless beach day and feeling the effects of exactly two fruity cocktails. That relaxed hum of appreciating a moment while you're in it, attentive yet careless. I love a variety of what all fits under the big Jazz umbrella, but to me it's hard to go wrong once you add the Latin influence and percussion. I can listen to this all day, especially live. Stan's tone is the biggest draw here. He's not stuffing in tons of notes, but he breathes life into the saxophone. His delivery in tone, phrasing, and runs are smooth and loose. He'll drop out on occasion to allow the other instrumentation to shine a bit, but to me his absence is felt; each song's best moments are when Stan has the saxophone to his lips (though the guitar work on "Samba Triste" and "Samba De Uma Nota So" is particularly impressive).

I've been a long time casual fan of Bossa Nova, and you can't go wrong with Stan Getz and Charlie Bird. There's no smoke and mirrors here, just simple excellent musicianship with interest, fluidity, and warmth. Bossa Nova kind of became the cliche elevator music or hold music in (US) popular culture, but this does make for a really nice background soundtrack for those pleasant and mellow vibes, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I started listening to Bossa Nova and Samba maybe when I was around the age of 15 or 16 years old. I always liked the spirit and feel of the music even though I could not understand Portuguese. I am pretty familiar with most of the songs on this album from hearing different versions of them over the years. I really dug this album and the jazz tint to these songs. It really sures up for me that I like this structured jazz rather than the more experimental, conceptual music theory type stuff that kind of goes over my head and comes off a bit pompous at times. The rhythm section stands out through out the album. I always like the Desafinado and Bahia.

A breezy delight.

I actually enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. It was very groovy and accessible for a jazz/bossa nova album. Great work on this one.

Really chill and pleasant. Sounds like what I think when I hear “jazz” but apparently has a big bossa nova influence that came from Brazil and was pretty different from American jazz at the time.

Jazz Samba - Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd (1962) bossanovajaz 33 minutos de uma sonoridade abrasileirada que valem a pena, não tem muito o que falar sobre, o jeito é ouvir. Melhores músicas: N/A Piores músicas: N/A 4/5

Wow this is really great! Sort of chill lofi music to study to, but way better.

Makes me feel like I’m on an elevator in a good way. Easy listening, love me some Stan Getz.

Found out that a stan getz song is on the whiplash soundtrack. That song isn't on this album but its still cool i fucking lovvee whiplash I also love bossa nova what a great genre of music

I will definitely be listening to this again. Hell I wouldn’t mind owning this on vinyl. Super chill, I listened to it on the way home from work after a long day and it calmed me right down.

Great!

We need more bossa nova up in here!

Don't like ranking instrumental albums 5 stars because so much about what I love about music is related to the lyrics, but this was great -- straight on the "to buy" list

Really strong album, highly recommended

Strong 4, Lovelyyyyyyyyyyy

A very peaceful choice for early morning in the classroom.

Great Album! Love the fusion and only few years later he was deeper in his bag! So greah tunes that got even greater in the following few years in vis career

This is just wonderful - a breeze to listen to

Goooooooood really goooood

Nice. Not my favorite Jazz Samba, but hard to complain about anything going on here.

samba samba samba samba

Feels like walking through a club in Miami on the 60s with a James Bond suit on, about to order a bourbon and go for the cigarette case. Enjoyable and classy. Now I want to get one of those shaky things that sound like a mini rainstick playing. Enjoyable in c

made me feel like an aesthetic and productive girlie first thing in the morning.

Letkeää bossa novaa kesän viimeisiin lämpimiin päiviin, not bad.

This is one of the many albums that highlights the interest of Jazz musicians in South American music. It's lush, calming, not too crazy. You miss some highlights that other works with Jobim had. Still pretty cool, you can't do anything wrong with that one here!

Very good stuff. I'm quite familiar with all these pieces, given that I'm married to a Brazilian who plays these songs regularly. It's really nice to hear these jazz interpretations. O Pato is one of my favourites and I particularly loved this Stan Getz version. Next step is to check out its sequel, Jazz Samba Encore.

Easy listening Samba.

I really enjoy Stan Getz. His music is so simply yet so melodic. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

Can't not enjoy some jazz.

Oh my gosh I love this album. The blend of saxophone with samba rhythm is frankly genius since it pairs so well with the overall relaxed feel. The upbeat nature of the songs is infectious, making one feel uplifted and joyful. I love this album so so much and I will definitely listen again

3.5 rounded up a wee bit bland, but overall fun! highlights: desafindo, e luxo so, bahia (aug 8 2024)

Getz / Gilberto is a favorite of mine. Was excited to listen to another Stan Getz album that I had never heard before. Really like his work and enjoyed the more upbeat tracks on this album - in true bossa nova fashion, it had me nodding my head while listening during my commute. Especially love the inclusion of Charlie Byrd, as I’m a sucker for jazz guitarists. Only complaint, it didn’t quite grab me with memorable hooks as much as some other jazz albums. It’s very enjoyable, but can fall into “background music” territory at times. But overall, will definitely be listening to this again.

What a nice and relaxing joy this album is to listen to... and what great musicians. When it comes down to jazz, I've always had a slight soft spot for the "Brazilian" influenced versions, so this album was a lovely surprise!

A new jazz album to me, this was a very enjoyable listen. Great as background or careful listening, and danceable at times.

Desafinado was one of the most pleasant things I have ever listened to. The jazz sound with guitar picking mixed in really did something for me. I guess I didn't know I enjoyed bossa nova music like this, but I do.

Smooth Latin Jazz Album performed by "Northern" artists.

Very good jazz album. Loved the theme. 4/5

Well, samba continues to not "wow" me too much, but just juding what's here: yeah, it's nice. Relaxing. Pretty in parts. I can see myself throwing it on again, and, I'unno, at this moment that's enough for me to score this thing a 4.

Just a nice and heartly slice of bossa nova. 4 stars flat.

As I sort of thought going into this, it’s a very nice 4. Stan Getz is pretty damn good at this whole bossa nova thing, and this is a really fucking good bossa nova album. As I said about Getz/Gilberto, what’s here is incredibly relaxing, very enjoyable, and super easy to listen to. As I also said about Getz/Gilberto, the only reason I’m at a 4 is mainly just how rigid the album can feel; not in terms of the compositions themselves, but simply the instruments at hand. This album sticks deeply to its shaker percussion, its cowbell, its guitar, and its saxophone, and it never really strays from that. The compositions are great, but even at just 33 minutes, there’s eventually gonna be some fatigue from hearing the shaker percussion in every single track without ever really pausing that much – the same goes for the saxophone riffs, or the guitar melodies, and the cowbell especially sticks out on the last track. With all of that said, there’s not a single bad track here, and I really did enjoy the hell out of this – it really could go to a 5 on a subsequent listen or two, because the vibes are just immaculate throughout. It’s a great album, it’s a great listen, and it should be on the list – I wish there was a vocal track or two (or even just a track with a little more bite to it) for variety’s sake, but that’s just my wishful thinking. It’s a very deserved and very strong 4. Definitely deserves to be on the list.

Stan Getz has a solid catalog, and this is no exception. Put on "Samba Dees Days" while you're making dinner and dance around the kitchen. Sip on a glass of wine while enjoying Getz's signature breathy sax style on "Samba Triste" and "Samba De Uma Nota So" with perfectly paired runs with Charlie Byrd's guitar. Honestly, there's nothing about this album to dislike, it's just so pleasant and easy. This album screams dinner party or wine bar and tapas. Pair with a nice and light Pinot Noir or medium bodied Cabernet

4 stars - embora seja um samba de americano de cintura-dura - o disco com o JG te muito mais swing e molho - o time aqui é legal, mais jazz que samba e oresultado é um som exótico \m/

Lovely album, feels right at home on a warm summer night. The band plays really soft and gentle. Shame this album isn’t any longer.

I hate Jazz. That being said this album is an exception, spreading a feeling like walking down the streets of Havanna , sitting in a cafe and watching people pass by.

Solid white guy jazz album. I enjoy Getz' sax playing, he was an inspiration for me when I was in high school. This album just doesn't have enough bite for me to love it.

Familiar with Stan Getz from my college Jazz Appreciation course. Very soothing!

Love a good jazz album. But also this faded to the background for me, so can't be 5 stars.

I've always enjoyed Charlie Byrd. And I totally enjoyed this as well. A+

A gem – brightly polished and glimmering. Even discounting for the faddishness of the bossa nova craze at the time (not an exact comp to the Macarena, but probably closer than jazz people would like to admit), it holds up beautifully today, thanks to the restrained and elegant and fluid playing that delivers a languor at once sweet and savory. "Desafinado" and "Samba Triste" and "Bahia" are all first-rate – with lovely suppleness approaching a haunting voluptuousness, with Getz's somewhat austere tone playing against Byrd's whimsically-reflective picking (particularly on the closer). One doesn’t need a mojito to enjoy though it may help. Not sure why the editors credit only to Getz, when Byrd’s name is on the masthead, too. And it’s sad that the artists who collaborated on such a sweet and swinging and fully copacetic piece of music would break up (presumably over its commercial success – what is it about the music business that causes such acrimony? Or is it really just human nature? Depressing to consider when really one should be inspired by this music to think only about idealized Brazilian lovers (or just a long beach holiday) we might be rewarded in another life.

This is totally the sound of 1962. It sounds super dated now, but also effortlessly cool at the same time. I can just see Audrey Hepburn walking into a Rio café to this...

It his best album, but solid none the less.

Good listen through, it sat comfortably in the background, calmed me and stayed varied instead of monotonous. I feel like this would be best listened to live, but as a recording it held much of its charm.

Great album. I'm not well versed in jazz music but this one was an awesome listen start to finish. Some great solo work in between some all around great music.

Muito bom...

Light and breezy! I feel like I should be enjoying the night sipping a cocktail in a cigar bar in Rio. The upbeat tempos keep you interested and it’s not the double album length, so that’s a huge plus. Overall very enjoyable.

Absolutely lovely and joyous to listen to. Smooth, sensual, rhythmic, and varied.

Perfect timing, had this album on a hot summer's day. Cocktail music, but better.

Good jazz for doing Sunday chores 3.5 stars

Very nice but boring at times.

Lovely, like full cream music.

I love Jazz and I love me some Spanish / southern I dunno what. A bit ambient for me to listen more consciously, but this is top tier room ambience, which is a valid and needed form of music. Underrated, dare I say.

Love it! 4

Another awesome jazz album, with a samba flair per the title and its a perfect blend. Felt like I was at the Rivera on a balcony in the summer looking out at the ocean, a drink in my hand and a cool breeze at my back.

Unobtrusive coffee house jazz can be very relaxing.

Can't go the full 5 b/c at times it's just a weeee bit vanilla compared to other bossa nova recordings of the time. It's hard not to envision the opening to a game show in those moments. But that's through no fault of the artists, more their influence on popular music to come. Really liked the versions of 1 Note Samba & Bahia.

The word Jazz in the title nearly doomed this but it was surprisingly decent. Generally enjoyed it.

It’s not often that the album is well advertised in the title. In this case, Jazz Samba is a subgenre in of itself, combining Brazilian samba with American jazz, particularly the bebop style, to create a sound that taps into both rhythm and improvisation. This album fits that description to a T. I appreciated the technical craftsmanship that saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd accomplished with their respective solos. The manner in which they play comes off as very free flowing, near effortless. Pair that with the especially good rhythm section, where the tempo and structure evokes a range of emotions throughout this album, from danceable like with “Samba de Uma Nota Só” to somber and reflective with “Samba Triste.” I’m not sure how well this album can be retained in memory, given the improvisation side of jazz that doesn’t follow closely to set patterns. But for what it’s worth, I had a fun time with this album as it gets a solid recommendation.

Really enjoyed it. So simple but so pleasant to listen to.

Very good bossa nova, kept playing in my head long after I finished.

I really dig this style of music. I was listening to a track on here called Saudade Vem Correndo when I heard a part that was sampled in The Pharcyde's "Runnin'". Blew my mind.

Really enjoyed this

Classic Stan Getz. And one thing I love about this album over Getz/Gilberto is the guitar playing - I think Charlie Byrd was a much better guitar player. This album kicks off with Desafinado which is fantastic and would fit right in on the Getz/Gilberto album but I really like the guitar part better here. The rest of the album is good but not great. I would listen to this every now and then but it's not something I could listen to all the time like Getz/Gilberto. Solid 3.75/5.

I rarely listen to Jazz. This album made me want to listen to more of it.

Really enjoyed this, sounds like good music for a cocktail party

Great for dinner music or to relax too. Great vibe album if you want some background music with a little bounce. I’ll absolutely put it on in the background but it’s not something I’ll crank in the car.

Pleasant tunes. Favourite track: Samba Triste.

I like it.

More sparse and serious than the other Getz offer. If that was dinner jazz then this is 4am bourbon, cigars and cocaine jazz and better for it.

What's not to like..bringing Bosonova to the masses. First track is up there with Stans best and perfect sunny Sunday tunes.

Absolute vibe. Listened to it three times through on a roadtrip.

Sorry mom, this album’s a fucking vibe. There’s no stopping this groove. Stan Getz and Charlie Bird create some fucking magic here. I don’t think this one is quite as good as Getz/Gilberto, but it’s really close. Love this album. 4/5

Great, smooth jazz

It's a real smooth, chill time, sitting nicely in the background. The sax is soft as butter, and I like the nuanced guitar in there. It is what it is. 3.5 rounded up.

Favorite: Samba Dee's Days In spite of my History of Jazz class in college, I can't say I know how to appreciate the nuances of jazz. I know I liked this, though, and will come back for more.

Fantastic.

This is great dinner music. But I love listening to them play and wish I could have seen them live. They would have been so awesome to see. I could see listening to this again, and again. I enjoyed this.

This is a chill, smooth jazz samba album. It's great background music and I did enjoy the vibe.

it was fun, im not really a jazzy person. but i get why people like it

Smooth

This was just below a 4. Top notch background music

Interesting take on samba

Enjoyed it, for how old it is, it's still a good listen.

I miss the vocals but still love some fucking bossa nova

Very Monsters Inc, and that is a high compliment. A little more traditional than Getz/Gilberto but a high-quality and highly relaxing album nonetheless. Best song: Desafinado

Nice cosy jazz music. Stand-out: Samba Dees Days

Delightful

This is exactly the kind of jazz that I can get behind, really, well, jazzy!

Not really my type of jazz. Not enough to grab onto, but it felt like a smooth summer night on the water.

Love this ish.

Soo nice, really loved the interplay between the guitar and horns. May have become one of my favorite instrumental albums. 4/5

Echt heel lekker deze, kende m nog niet. Lijkt erg op Getz/Gilberto, luister die als je deze nice vond

Ik ontdek wel heel veel lekkere jazz albumpies zo zeg

Jazz and samba

That was incredibly pleasant. Sweet smooth sax and guitar breaks , chugging along at a moderate clip. I loved it.

like it!

This is such an ambient good time. I feel so carefree and leisurely while I’m listening. This is great kitchen music, it pairs so well with mixing and chopping and prepping. Good times.

Sweeeet

It's jazz and samba. What more can you hate? Really relaxing enjoyable stuff.

Not a musician or an album I’ve listened too often. But love the sound.

Chill music. Good vibes. Classic album.

JAAAAAZZ I love jazz

Extremely influential music stylings import for the USA. Really enjoyed listening to this, perfect for a hot weekend afternoon, but I will say I mostly really dislike what Americans went on to do with Bossa Nova. That Sinatra album was a chore.

Very good but Getz/Gilberto is better. Don't need both on this list

This is good, but not my genre

ekki alveg minn jazz, en hlutlægt séð mjög góð plata!

Oh my ... so good. Ya never know what you're going to get with jazz, but this was perfect for my morning listen!

Great album and makes jazz very accessible to the layperson. You could listen to this any time. Smooth with a great groove, nice tight playing.. well done. Heard of both credited artists but not terribly familiar with their work, I’m a fan. 4/5

Really good.

Smooth

Smooth....

In my youth I wouldn't have appreciated this like I do now. Well produced, well executed, not my preferred listening routine, but I still enjoyed it.

This is white people jazz, there's no getting around that. But it's recorded really well and it's smooth and it's great to cook to. I enjoyed this album quite a bit. Listening to this while driving is not the best way to hear it but I still enjoyed it. When I got home and started making dinner with my wife, I turned it on again. I would like to see this album not make someone dance. So don't drive to this, dance to this! I know it's not your kind of music but just try letting go for a second and let this album sweep you off your feet.

Fantastic, finally found some jazz I can enjoy

Delicious.

The album is short, but each song feels a little too long.

On one hand, this seems like a very safe record. On the other, I was struck by how clean and flawless every performance is on this album. I really enjoyed the interplay of the guitar and sax — it was just so pro from the first to the final note. Also, recognizing that this is something of a first — the first samba album recorded by American jazz musicians — I guess it's wasn't so safe in 1962.

OK, let me get the review this album out of the way. It's great, no doubt. It's chill; the performances are nuanced and tasty; and it was enormously influential. So yeah, it's at least 4 stars. But boy these guys have a hard-on for jazz samba. This is the 3rd such album we've heard, and who knows how many others there are. I like jazz samba, too, but two Stan Getz albums is a bit much. And meanwhile, there's no Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Louis Armstrong, or Charlie Parker? I get that jazz isn't the most popular genre for the people doing this project, but let's at least represent the breadth of what the genre has to offer. I would easily swap out that Asturd Gilberto solo album for Coleman's Shape of Jazz to Come and this one for Rollins' Saxophone Colossus. And let's get rid of Kid Rock in favor of some Louis Armstrong and Limp Bizkit in favor of Charlie Parker.

For me, samba in my jazz is like the lime in the coconut.

some nice easy listening :) i think i prefer this type of jazz to the experimental stuff, I'm not quite there yet

First introduction to Byrd was very jarring to me. This side and cooperation with Stan Getz is AWESOME. Two legends playing off each other.

Good listen, very cool. Hard to differentiate the songs but seemed more about the rhythm and sound than anything else.

Kevään ensimmäinen lämmin päivä ja levyksi valikoitui letkeää bossa novaa. Lähestulkoon viiden tähden kombo.

Very good album by two jazz greats. The first track was my favorite

Not too bad. I can see myself listening again.

This is the definition of "easy listening", but I don't mean that as a slight in the least. This collection of tunes brings the sound of Brazil to our ears via a couple of white Americans. The sounds are cozy, sexy, and overall smoooooth. This was a peaceful listen, and I'm having a hard time justifying 4 stars when I just gave Dave Brubeck's Time Out a full 5 stars only a few days ago. They're both delightful, so average these scores out to a couple of 4.5s.

Smooth, cool, relaxing. I love hearing Charlie Byrd so subtly meshing with the saxophone. Great for a rainy night. Incredible backstory on Getz- how did he play through all the addictions.

Great album, everything I said about the Inpanema album applies.

Maybe I’m in a mood but I thought it was great background music

Very nice but not life changing! If this were the first bossa nova I ever heard I would’ve gone crazy, though, so I understand why it’s capital I Important.

Sounds excellent and I'd like to revisit it at some point

This is nice but if you already had Getz and Gilberto it's hard to say this is as good and give it a 5.

I feel like I got teleported to a different time

Man I wish I was this smooth

This one gets a high ranking solely because of guitar tone. Incredible production here and some really jamming songs

Nice unoffensive early listening. Not sure if I’ll listen to it again but wasn’t the worst on this list

Claro que si

Jazzy.
