Reviews (page 13 of 13)
Still not a Wings fan. I'm not sure I'd ever listened to this whole album but *wow* does it fall off after the title track.
I don't really find any of Paul's post Beatles stuff to be interesting at all. Ram maybe, but most everything else is from my point of view, corny and boring.
Some fun bits, but nothing that really perked up my ears. I like Wings alright, but I don't think I'd listen to this album on my own.
Real weak effort from McCartney here. He and Lennon really were more together!
Should have stay in the Beatles :(
'Band on the Run' would be a great song if you only had to hear it once, instead of 6,347 times.
2/5. You know, I think I finally understand what makes Paul so popular despite having some of the most annoying songs of all time. He sings with so much confidence that it really feels like he enjoys these lyrics and they are not just hilariously bad for the most part. I enjoy the first two songs, classics for sure but he loses the plot really fast. Abruptly, bluebird is nothing and kind of stays at that level for the most part and then as a final saving grace, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five makes a great closer. It feels like I'm being lied to, or that we listened to a different album. This is not even in comparison to Lennon, this is in comparison to his own songs. It's clear he can write hits, why does most of the album feel so half-baked? Like I'll bop to Jet and Band any day, but put on most everything else here and it's feels like a McCartney copycat that has never heard of the Beatles. Mostly disappointed, but it saves itself from being unlistenable with a few choice cuts here and there. Best Song: Band On The Run, Jet, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five
It's all a bit dull. Couple of nice tracks, but very, very repetitive, and lyrically unimpressive.
Starts out strong. but there's some goofy stuff on here. Paul McCartney should have written children's music after he left the beatles.
Not fussed about this, Mrs Vandebilt was my fav track but not arsed beyond that, it gets a 2 as I need to save the 1s for truly dreadful stuff like Kid Rock
Oh my what a mess. At least they tried something new.
I am POSITIVE that there is enough McCartney in this list already. This is just wanky.
Meh…couple of good tracks. Fairly bland and repetitive. It does have some good qualities but they all can be experienced listening to only the title track.
McCartney without Lennon sucks, and Lennon without McCartney sucks. They needed each other.
Fav songs: Let Me Roll It; Mrs. Vandebilt This isn't my type of music. It feels like middle-aged, slightly experimental rock that is careful not to offend. I absolutely have no clue what's going on with 'Picasso's Last Words'. The singles from this album I remember from childhood. My current status as a middle-aged person has not given me any greater appreciation like I found with Steely Dan. And the album art is doofy. I cannot decide if that's apropos or terrible.
All the talent, production wizardry, and cocaine in the world and this is what he comes up with?
langweilig, 2
Can't remember but boring I think
There is something about Paul McCartney that I just don’t buy into. It always feels like he’s just playing around, that he doesn’t actually believe what he’s saying. He’s just playing and singing what he knows will work for his audience, not necessarily what he’s feeling. On the last track of this album, the band moves from a funky disco section into a church organ hymn with three part harmonies, and back again. Cool. Then at the climax of the song an orchestra builds and builds to a big final note, with a slight reference to Also Sprach Zarathustra- and then- we get a three second reprise of Band on the Run. As if to say “just kidding!” Even Paul doesn’t buy what he’s selling, and neither do I.
Band on the Run is really good, and I love Jet but those were not enough to elevate this album above a 2
Meh 2 star
Standouts Band on the Run Jet Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five

Did not even include the frog song.
Average
I've never been able to get into the Beatles, let alone the post-work and projects unless it involves Thomas the Tank Engine. I listen to this and can recognize excellent craftsmanship of music and song writing, but as I listen it just makes me wish for anything else because it just does nothing positive for me.
This reaffirms my conviction that RAM is the only worthwhile McCartney album from the 70s. The only other McCartney album besides RAM I even bother with is III.
Paul McCartney is too light-hearted and cheeky for the '70s. His style played very well in the '60s, but the next decade called for more grit and more style. These songs are well crafted, but they're innocent to the point of boredom.
I know that Paul McCartney is one of the great artists of all time, but frankly I found this album to be pretty bland. The two popular singles, Band on the Run and Jet, are alright. I liked Mrs Vanderbilt and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five the best. The rest of this is very average. An ok album, but certainly nothing special and not anything I would come back to.
This album goes to show that even the (arguably) best Beatle really needed to have the other Beatles around him to make music at the same level. That's not to say this is bad, it's not, but it is certainly not the Beatles. And I guess that was the point to a certain degree. There are Beatle-esque moments on this album, but overall it kind of fell flat for me. I'm not saying that I want everything Paul McCartney does to sound like the Beatles, but what he came out with here is just not even close to the same level. 2.5/5 but I'm going to round down. I feel like George Harrison's solo attempts were much stronger, especially All Things Must Pass. This is absolutely not that.
Often hear songs on the radio from this album, which I either didn't pay attention to or would change stations. Made a sound effort to listen to it this time. The songs are familiar but just couldn't get into it - just too limp for me
I enjoyed Markiplier's Let's Play of the Beatles, though MatPat still hasn't put out his game theory video yet. I feel like this spin-off may be a little over my head Trying to find a good resource about the Beatles, their history and their creative process is such an annoying task. I've looked before and every time I've been pointed to the Get Back/Let It Be documentaries, the Anthology book or random ass autobiographies about the guy who brushed up against Lennon in May of 1968, all of which don't help me to actually understand the band. However, if I have anything to gleam from the time that I've been a fan of The Beatles, it's that McCartney was my favourite of the bunch because he just is, okay? All of this to say that I feel incredibly under-equipped going into this album despite having a better-than-average knowledge on the subject matter. Wait! I can check the book. Thank you, Robert Demmerlist, owner of the Demsdale Demmerlist. The album came from adversity when McCartney got busted for toking gas station weed ((real) or maybe not? The only search results for a McCartney drug bust are from 1980). The cover art doesn't feature the actual band members on the run. I want all of my $0 back. A mostly-solo work from McCartney. Doesn't seem like there's a lot going for this album, though in all fairness it's a McCartney album. We had to get at least one on the list I enjoyed this album for what it is, though something definitely feels like it's missing here - a certain something that I don't have the time or knowledge to discuss. The instrumentals err on the side of feeling like they're a little directionless and "off", though this could just be the post-Beatles high speaking. McCartney's vocals are competent, though these are far from his best performances. There are some good cuts on this album. "Bluebird" was my favourite song - it's just a nice little tune. Other songs I liked include Mrs. Vandebilt and Picasso's Last Words. There's an impressive level of variety to this album, which I also respect. I like how many of the instrumentals undergo drastic changes. The blending of different genres across each song is also appeciated, particularly on Mamunia and 1985.
Meh. First two tunes are really good, were in heavy rotation when they were released. The rest of it is fine but it just doesn't measure up to Beatles.
Meh
I know a couple of these tracks, but generally this wasn’t particularly gripping to listen to. Which is a shame because jet and banned on the run are both half decent. The rest of the album just didn’t inspire me.
Yup, this definitely sounds like the sort of songs that the Beatles weren't letting Paul record. Not a fan.
Boy oh boy, do I not like post-Beatles Beatles. A few highlights here and there, with the rest being a bit of a chore.
‘Nice’, I suppose, but not in anyway interesting.
It’s….ok
Paul McCartney annoys me.
Ass
Ga meg ikkje så masse
only liked a couple songs entirely, mostly not my tea
Yeah sorry Paul no disrespect but get this out of my face
Had the Beatles continued into the 70s maybe as a band they would have churned out cheesy songs, but they didn’t continue, and so all we have are the various solo projects which are almost all bad. The soft rock quality of Paul’s solo stuff is particularly annoying to me.
Sounded like tracks rejected from beatles...
Meh
meh
Non actual
After first two songs it was fine. Will not be adding to my library
..
A little too sleepy
I don’t know, man this is a weird album.
Just can't come close to competing with "All Things Must Pass."
This is the band that The Beatles could have been. Apparently. The album opens up with a massive classic, as Macca makes his bid for stadium supremacy, and is generally successful from there on out. Although I get tired of the knowingly-vaudellian twists and turns between genres, it is indeed the very well executed sound of a band on the run. What if Alex Harvey wasn't deranged? Favourite tracks: Band on the Run, Mrs Vandebilt, 1900&85
I'm not sure how Paul became so pedestrian without John.
Not his best, 2 good tracks at beginning. Rest mediocre.
Not typically my favorite style of music. Good background music.
Paul McCartney left Wings?? He was the best one! One of the great Simpson’s quotes of all time perfectly encapsulates this ridiculous album cover and what I’m sure will be uhh music of some description. Allow me to fly upon the ample bosom of one Paul “MC Walrus” McCartney carried by the wind and of course the rest of this ensemble carrying my bloated body deftly across the breeze. Another movie montage song coming up. Beatles style. Am I allowed to say “Beatles” here? Maybe I’ll be on the run soon. This time, from the estate of John Lennon. Jokes aside, this song really heats up at the 1:30 mark or so and then dives into that lame verse and chorus we all know and hate. What are they on the run from? That bald guy centre right definitely has some skeletons in his closet. And the matching drivers licenses in his sock drawer. To be completely fair, I’ve heard far worse songs here. This is fine. This would make a great Buffalo Wild Wings commercial. Firstly. The band is called WINGS. Sold. Second. The song already sounds like a commercial. It has had the life PRE-DRAINED from it!! You can’t buy that kind of sterility. Finally, it has a member of the Beatles involved. Slap a motorcycle into an AI video generator and run that sumbitch at the Taquitos fiesta bowl halftime show or whatever. Sell all the Carolina Ghost Annihilator Ranch Dogs you can. I do love the buzzy bass here, but this was another fine one. Ho boy. Not the vibe. Whatever that scratchy instrument is has always been awful. Paul smoked what he thought was weed (oregano) at a resort in Cuba and bought the instrument for far too much money at a local market. Talk about a missile crisis! Yeah this song sucks. Ho. Hey Ho. Ho. Hey Ho. Yeah. More like HO HUM. Santana visits Санкт-Петербург. Back to the USSR with this one. Let YOU roll it?? What are your doobie credentials? I need to see a certificate from $w4g.com OR higher. No bullshit here Paul. Oh he’s talking about his heart being a wheel that he rolls towards somebody. And I thought my metaphors were laboured. This is end of dinner party at a suburban mansion type music. Deeply depressing somehow. The guitar part is kind of fun, but it’s just not for me. Mamunia is making me realize that every other song on this album has been pretty god damned good. This is a train wreck. The eternal 2020’s debate of cultural appropriation vs appreciation springs to mind. This is the bad one. Wake me up when this song is over please. Whoa. I’m up I’m up. Is this actually going to be a cool little folk-y ballad? Yeah I like this. Why does it have to change back to “Jet” halfway through UGH. Although, did you know; Picasso’s last words were not “Drink to Me.” It’s true. They were “I actually hate cubism, I just did it for the ‘tang.” Historians believed this outburst to be too crude to include in records and thus deferred to “Wings” as the official scribe(s). Oh no no no. “My little lady gets me high” is my cue to exit. I want to thank the good people at 1 million records .comp my favourite band camp webpage and of course the rascals down at dorchester max security. You guys keep me real. Big respect to Ringo. Not Starr, but my guy at the Cincinnati zoo who keeps me stocked with Giraffe kibble and gorilla chow. Great alternative to human food and FLUSH with vitamin K6. You haven’t heard of it… yet. I can imagine trees you haven’t dreamed of in your wildest fantasies. And I’ve had some wild tree fantasies. Of course, I wouldn’t be here without my man, my MAIN man, Akeem the African Dream. My rock. Jive on, my sweet soul brother. Play me off Paul. Or whomever is responsible for the Wings outro music. Get that guy in here. Man, finding the actual music review in this thing is like finding that one guy in your neighbourhood’s great uncle in the picture on the album cover. “Uhh yeah my PeePaw’s neighbour knew this guy who ran into the washboard player on tracks 1-4 of “Band on the Run.” Real nice guy.” Impossible! If you followed that or have even read this, may the most spiritual member of Wings come to you in a dream and bestow upon you mystic knowledge of a kingdom long forgotten. Alabaster sheen cascades inviting light upon its audience. The mortals gaze skyward; hopeful to be enrobed in its warming glow. Not enough time to panic. All consuming beams thirst for humanity. Unknown horrors carve sigils in the dessicated mortals, now too weak to comprehend mercy. The ritual of consumption continues. Life on earth ends, only to emerge amnesiac. Seek the light to return to dark. Anyway this album was mid. Dorkiness all around. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Picasso’s Last Words (Drink to Me)

I enjoyed Let Me Roll It. And I had heard band on the run. This is not for me though.
I disliked this album. Band on the Run was the only song that I even slightly enjoyed, and I didn't enjoy it a lot. Overall, I just am not a fan of Mr, McCartney's work.
Great album for background chill music to have at a cafe or as you do other stuff that require minimal attention. Probably not ideal for studying as it changes rhythm and is catchy, but still a great candidate.
The singles are all pretty memorable and good. The rest is just okay. C
Hey lads, let's start our album with a couple of Beatlesesque pop tunes for old times sake, then move to some slow rumba, what do you say? Yeah, then we can transition to a circus type jingle, follow that up with an Elvis-y ballad. I wonder if we could nab some of that Paul Simon Graceland sound at some point? Certainly! Then a dramatic Clapton type bluesy number, then a drunkenly sing-a-long, then... How about a rambunctious piano toe tapper to close it out? Paul can even do his redneck hillbilly voice that he's so good at! Top notch ideas lads! The key here is to keep the listener on their toes. What's the use of worrying about consistency, throw everything we got at them. Two kitchen sinks out of five.
I tried to go into this album with an open mind, as I tended to think of McCartney’s solo career as unbearably cheesy, though I recognize his contributions to the Beatles. This album reminded me that the Beatles are better as the sum of their parts. I felt like the whole album had a sort of “Day in the Life” vibe, where all of the songs have a pretty disparate feel to them, jumping around through many different genres (I always forget that I like the beginning of the title track, but the chorus makes me want to punch it in the face). Mrs Vanderbilt is a fun track, ruined by cheesy sax. bluebird is cringe worthy. Let me Roll It, Mamunia, and 1984 are not bad, though nothing remarkable. I hated how the last track recapitulated bits from all the other songs-it felt needlessly self indulgent. I wouldn’t revisit this, but it’s not awful. I listened to it twice to make sure of my opinion.
First song was good, but the rest of the album was pretty disappointing. “Bluebird” and “Mamunia” were annoying enough to drop this down to 2-stars.
A bit insipid. 5/10
It's a normal part of life for a lot of men: you get a little older, get married, have a kid, drift apart from your high school buddies—and so you start a mediocre rock band. It's just a bummer when the man is Paul McCartney, he's still in his 20s when he starts the band, and his high school buddies were the fucking Beatles. I really wanted to like this, but the songs are just so boring. Paul and John needed each other.
I only liked Band on the Run and I already knew that one. Nothing special here to me.
Pretty categorical proof that Paul is the most overrated Beatle. George solos.
A remarkably dull and plodding album. I remember Band on the Run having a bit more vim to it than it actually does. This isn't an album I particularly cared for, and I'm unlikely to play it again. It does have an amusing cover.
Well this was all blandly competent. In a hollow sort of way.
I found this pretty dull, McCartney doing tedious little songs.
I generally think the word ‘naff’ is underused these days. So let’s bring it back where it’s rightly deserved. This album is very polished, and there are some occasional rhythm and bass parts which offer encouragement, but then it just does something incredibly cheesy to ruin the song e.g. crappy brass or particularly the chorus parts. It just feels like it borrows ideas kind of schizophrenically from better 70s rock at the time, and makes it worse. I think this might mark the beginning of ‘Dad Rock’. The whole thing, as I say, is just incredibly naff. If this wasn’t McCartney surely this wouldn’t have been as popular as it apparently was.
2,3
I dunno, fairly generic and boring to me
Some were ok, some were hard to finish
Eh -- never a big fan of Paul McCartney's solo stuff always felt a little light-weight and wishy washy.
Self indulgent whining tripe.
Kinda viby but meh
Halt Gitarren-"Rock"-Musik.
It’s okay, but nothing more. I understand that it is interesting to see what McCartney was up to after The Beatles. He could have done better - his solo stuff is better IMO. The last song on this album is the best
Some fun tracks (I've always enjoyed Band on the Run for all the different sections it has) but not particularly interesting or engaging.
More like shit on the run
One of Paul’s better solo efforts which really isn’t saying much…
A couple good bookends. This album seems like it tries to be so many things, that it's nothing really at all
2.5 but overall just a bit mundane. Starts strong of course with the eponymous track then Jet, trails off and tries to reunite at the end.
Shake up a heavy pour of big Bond horns here and I’d be double-oh so delighted to imbibe; as is, I’ll live and let you have it.
I was actually disappointed with this album without totally hating it. I just expected more Beatles sounding songs instead of Simon and Garfunkel sounding songs. I passed on this before it was completely finished. Choice cut: Band on the Run
Boring
Average album. Liked track 1 4 8 and 9 the rest was mid.
meh
Why?
Two decent singles, but not much else I cared for.
The Beatles ruined my life. Sorry Mr McCartney but I did NOT fw this album heavy idk why lol. Some of the instrumentals were pretty good but like the album overall was just whatever
I’ve always like this group. However, I now realize that I only like two songs on this album (“Band on the Run” and “Jet”).
Paul McCartney can really write some catchy tunes. Unfortunately be it the lack of a solid collaborative band or the 70s influence, these just aren’t interesting.
Paul really said, “This one’s for the ADHD girlies,” because god, this record is all over the place.
not for me
I had a very difficult time assessing the music at face value. These songs are so beloved by a generation that they're used to push goals and incite an urge in the form of commercials for cars or Coke or whatever. Yes, I like some of the music. No, I'm not familiar with the world culture, nor am I familiar with the popular or music culture of 1973. I think this music is lost on me because it no longer symbolizes anything but relinquishing agency to the machine. Is this what Paul McCartney wanted? tl;dr , I don't feel qualified to rate the music because I only know it to be "commercial music."
Pretty fun and very skillfully executed, although it lacks purpose and passion. It seems like professional coasting, to be honest.
Fiiiiiiine. It's fine. It's worse than fine, actually. It's more Paul McCartney than I ever want.
On the Wikipedia entry for Wings one of their ever rotating guitarists claims Wings sounds like a band and not a solo McCartney project and that is only true on the songs that sound like Beatles songs. Mostly boring!
I'd say "meh this was fine" but I was finding it annoying by the end. It felt very samey and I didn't find any of it particularly interesting.
I love Paul, but this album was meh. “Band on the Run” is a classic, but the other songs were just not hitting the same mark for me.
It's just totally fine for me. Nothing remarkable, nothing exciting
I genuinely tried to be objective when listening to this. The first two songs were alright! A strong start in my opinion. Then Bluebird came on… I couldn’t do it. Had to skip halfway through. Same with the rest of the album. The songs were not hitting and I was over Paul’s voice.
2 really good songs- the remaining were ok
This album is plagued by the "first and last song are great, and the middle songs are subpar" scenario. The song Band on the run is good enough, but Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five makes the album. Not strong enough to hold the rest of the album up. 2/5.
Never a fan of McCartney, Wings or the Beatles. Lowest common denominator pop stuff. That being said, there's a handful of songs that I think are decent enough. Two are on this album... Band on the Run Jet So for only having 2 listenable tracks, this album gets a 2
Pretty generic Paul
Another band I have historically hated! This is such a cheese-dick record. It's like children's music for adults. I hate it. There are a few moments where it almost gets interesting but then they swing back into some bullshit sing-songy carnival-ass sounding repetitive thing again. Not the worst thing I have ever heard, but not for me for sure. BOOOO.
Ugh. McCartney at his most Macca. There’s a reason you’ve only heard the first two tracks on this.
I have already confessed to the influence that Charles Shaar Murray's essay on Paul McCartney (featured in his volume of compiled writings, Shots From The Hip) had on forming my (not-very-high) opinion of Paul McCartney's solo output. And he makes an exception for Band On The Run, as the best post-Beatles album from Paul, and proof that he could still write a great record, Well, I humbly disagree. Village Voice critic Robert Christgau wrote in 1981: "I originally underrated what many consider McCartney's definitive post-Beatles statement, but not as much as its admirers overrate it. Pop masterpiece? This? Sure it's a relief after the vagaries of Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway." He ultimately awarded the album a C+ rating, indicating "a not disreputable performance, most likely a failed experiment or a pleasant piece of hackwork". That sounds more realistic to me. I find this whole record under-written, over-produced, and desperate to be liked. They are not good things. A few songs are blessed with a pretty good tune -- you could never accuse Paul of not being capable of a pretty tune -- but really not hugely memorable. And I never really liked the title track. The story I find most revealing about this record is the account of Fela Kuti confronting Paul in the studio, accusing him of ripping off African music. Paul plays him the tapes, and convinces him that there is no local influence. And ain't that the truth; there is none of the energy, inventiveness, funk or power of a Fela Kuti record on this disc. I agree that many fan, hoping against hope for a return to former glories, grabbed onto this not-incompetent record like a drowning man clutching at flotsam. Desperately trying to kid themselves that this was actually good, it has been massively over-praised. I am writing this just a few days after the 50th anniversary re-release of the 'under dubbed' version, with orchestras etc. all stripped off. I can't think of a record I am less interested in hearing. 2.5 stars, rounding down for hype.
This is a tough one, because Paul McCartney has written some of my favourite ever songs, but nothing in this album landed with me. There's something missing, I'm not sure what, but it means there's nothing I'm keen to return to.
I love the Beatles, but their post-Beatles ventures didn't do much for me. They truly were greater than the sum of their parts. 2.5 stars.
Enjoyed it
Sophisticated arrangements, but generally not interesting.
Never heard any of these tracks before, even though the title track has a lot of plays. Paul is only interested in crafting clever pop songs in a classic rock mould. There is no heart, no fury, no pulse, no nerve and no lust. The bass is nice and there are a lot of arrangement ideas, but I still struggle to find anything worth caring for. I liked Bluebird and the title track though. After having an album from each ex-beatle (excluding Ringo) and two or three from the Beatles I can safely say I don’t care much for the group itself or Paul or John individually. The George Harrison one was the best of the bunch (all things must pass).
I don't know what it is about the Wings but something about their songs just bore me. It lacks some kind of oumph like their heart wasn't really in it or something. Maybe it's the mixing? I just can't put my finger on it. There are a lot of decent songs on this album, my favourite being "Mrs. Vandebilt. Probably should be a weak 3 but I'm giving it a strong 2 since i don't really feel like listening to it again.
Läser att låten Jet var en singel. Rätt trist låt. Inte heller titelspåret är jätteskoj. Fattar faktiskt inte riktig. Men smaken är ju som baken.
Booring
im not doing it you cant make me
Funny songs
Nimikkobiisi oli entuudestaan tuttu. Kauniisti sanottuna kovin rönsyilevä levy.
Ihan hyvän kuulosta, mut ei jäänyt erityisesti mieleen
Listen. I didn’t expect to love this album. Haven’t been much a fan of Paul since I became an adult. However, I also didn’t expect that I would entirely dislike it. The dude is a schlock factory! Does he have any emotional depth? Beyond the title track, there is nothing of interest here. No intrigue whatsoever. Some of this is downright goofy. It’s love song after love song, with a few nonsensical narratives peppered in. A prime example of how it’s actually possible for one to ride one’s own coattails.
Ga meg ikkje så masse
Very Slow Rock. Fahrstuhlmusik?
It was a struggle to get through this. I think the hits are still hits, but I won't be returning.
Really enjoy McCartney's bass playing, but the songs on this record, well, bore me. I'm okay with "Band on the Run" and "Jet," but the rest just recedes into the background for me (with the possible exception of the more upbeat "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five").
bluebird you will never be blackbird
this album has 2 very good songs but the problem is even on one of the very good songs you have to sit through half of a boring song before the good part starts.
Unfortunately refused to finish... Sorry Paul
meh. not a big "wings" fan. Here're the neat things I learned on wikipedia: they recorded part of this in Lagos, Nigeria. Paul wanted to record it somewhere exotic. He got held up at knifepoint. Lost a bunch of demos and lyrics. Went back to England. Two dudes quit the band before he left for Lagos, so Paul filled in their parts.
Paul McCartney doing more Beatles stuff without the Beatles. Best Track: band on the run
Band on the Run (song) is always fun. There were a few decent contenders but overall, it was a little dull. I love Paul so this makes me sad to say lol
Ok
Meh
Zzz
day 3 PMC&Wings - Band on the run Track 1 - Classic hit Track 2 - JET - shit Track 3 - Bluebird - Nope. I love birds and this song is too hippie Track 4 - Mrs. Vandebilt - I'm liking it. Good song Track 5 - Let me Roll it - Not bad. Track 6 - Mamunia - recorded well, plesant but just okay. Catchy but that's it Track 7 - No Words - NOPE Track 8 - Picasso's Last Words - meh Track 9 - 1985 - okay. above average
Standard music industry practice. Release a couple of catchy singles, load them at the start of the album and fill the rest with a mish mash of average mixed genre tracks.
2/5
did not find anything here, didn't feel it at all
It was no big deal.
2/5 mostly bad, has a number of good tracks
How the fuck it got into this list?? It's boring af
Title Track is awesome…the rest is alright I guess
Inoffensive but bland and boring.
No doubt there are some absolute legendary bangers on here, but as a cohesive album this just doesn't cut it. It feels like a bunch of randomly thrown together songs that Paul McCartney maybe let some other people help with? Idk I don't get the hype.
I never really liked Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles music. It’s insipid. Frankly, the frog chorus was genius compared to this.
Ei ollut yhtään raivostuttava! Hyvin pop-iskelmä, 70-lukua onneksi enemmän kuin 60. Ei ehkä tyhjänpäiväistä, kutsuu vähän keskittymään muttei lopulta onnistu siinä
Band on the Run soi päässä.
Inoffensive, Soft Rock. Good harmonies.
So may breathless reviews of this pretty mediocre album.
Its like if the beatles didnt even try to be interesting or have ideas. The title song is incredible, just great. The rest is just very generic catchy rock that doesnt really say anything
Got less interesting
The title song Band On The Run is pretty good, but the rest of the album feels a bit generic. It definitely feels like we've had enough Beatles songs at this point.
70s pop. Not great. I feel like if Paul McCartney wasn’t involved with this then it would be looked back on as well. Bland.
After the brilliant George Harrison's album "All things must pass" I just can't rate it higher. Or I just don't like Paul.
Dull.
Catchy sure, but ultimately pretty lame, lyrically. To the point of irritation on some songs (my heart is like a wheel? Mamunia?).
Would this album have been as popular if it weren’t written by a member of The Beatles?
Not my cup of tea. I was a little bored for most of the album. "Band on the run" is catchy though. 2/5
Paul's voice was more prominent than everybody else, mellow lyrics and soothing tempos resembling the Beatles style without showing great innovation.
Snore
Meh...
2 Kinda boring
This was... not very good. Band on the Run was great, everything else... not the best.
Not my thing. A bit too old school.
Beatle-based mid-70s soft rock. This album sounds like a Time Warner "AM Radio Gold" collection.
There's like 3 good songs on here :/ non Beatles McCartney is not for me no sirree 👎
Ugh. Ever since I knew this album was in the book, I have dreaded this day. As big of a Beatles and Paul McCartney fan as I am, I loathe the song "Band on the Run." I loathe it so much that when I saw Sir Paul perform it live, I used the opportunity to use the restroom. I felt similarly about the rest of the album, with a couple songs I didn't mind. It makes no logical sense for me to dislike this album and yet here we are. I can only assume there is some unhappy childhood memory baked into hearing my parents listen to this. Pro-tip: blaming your parents for your mysterious quirks and shortcomings always works.
There are the two well known and one slightly less well known radio songs on this album. Other than that, not much to tickle the brain here. I certainly respect McCartney, but probably wouldn't have gone to see him live even with free tickets.
Meh
Ugh Credit where credit’s due, Jet is a great single that feels distinct from the Beatles, and Let Me Roll iIt had a good groove. The closer was creative and weird (though it feels completely out of place). The instrumentation, especially the bass, is solid. But boy I am not a huge fan of this album. Band on the Run, unlike Happiness is a Warm Gun, is awkward in its three part structure, and has a cheesy chorus I hate that gets stuck in my head regardless. The rest of this weirdly sequenced album feels corny and dated, and has a lot of diluted recreation of the Beatles sound, right down to the harmonizing vocals especially in the second half. The songs just don’t grab me at all. One star felt too harsh but I’d probably give it 1.5 if I could.
Bit of a bore
I like the opening/title track, but I didn't find the rest of the album that interesting.
I was a big Beatles fan as a teen but wouldn't have bought this album for $2 at Half-price Books back then. I'm really wondering if trying to listen to all 1,078 albums here is largely a waste of my time because this is yet another 2 (I use the Goodreads scale: 1=didn't like it, 2=it was OK, 3=liked it, 4=really liked it, 5=it was amazing.) How can something so pedestrian be a 'must hear' album?
Band On The Run is a fine song and album opener. Dear lord, this side A is boring. Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) has some fun shifts and textures.
Hmm. It's not the Beatles. Solo Paul - songs are still good but I feel this goes into cheesey 70s a tad. Didn't love it.
Maso maso
It’s fine - doesn’t really feel like it holds together as an “album“ though. Great song I just heard in ’Licorice Pizza’ though (‘Let me Roll it’.)
Very repetitive lyrically. Slow and boring. I just don't care Paul McCartney this is rubbish. Beatles is better. Also man on the last track is having a siezure
Sorry Paul
Bit boring
I remember this album from when I was a kid, but only a couple tracks, like the title track and Jet. Despite our family having this LP in our home in the 70s, I'm not sure I ever listened to it all the way through, at least not attentively. It's okay. It's not horrible, and I still like the title track and Jet, although truth be told that might be due to nostalgia. Overall, I just wasn't very interested as I listened to it. Too saccharine for me. I did read the Wikipedia entry on this album and the story of the album's making is definitely worth a read.
Helt ok, Band on the Run är en panglåt. Stark 2:a/svag 3:a.
Ah, so the Beatles were a fluke. He's right, this band should be on the run after putting out this album.
Gets a star for first half of band on the run. The rest is just okay. Like the cover. It gets a star too.
thppt. shoulda stayed in the Beatles.
Mega lame, where’s RAM on this list :(
i judged too soon it wasn’t that bad but band on the run is JARRING SHUT UP so minus points for that
I don’t know why but I didn’t enjoy it seemed like a novelty albums at times and was just generally a little bit boring 😔
He's definitely done a lot better than this
Nothing specially, sounds like McCartney on a musical conveyor belt.
Yeah
Did not stand out to me at all
Just not for me. Most of the songs were very similar and consisted of a few words softly repeated over a basic melody. The title track is ok but it plays like a medley of four to five different songs and I would have preferred if they kept up the energy. The last song brought some energy back and was probably the best on the album but I could have done without the uncomfortable gratuitous grunting.
false
thank fuck the beatles ended when they did. imagine if they turned this shit. there's already a window of the beatles being good, as in post drugs, if they'd carried on and turned into this then the window of them being good would become a smaller. imagine a world where the beatles are like the who, or fleetwood mac where they're big but also churn out a load of shit.
2 stars so far eh. overplayed.
Eh, it's fine. A couple of really good moments, and some terrible ones.
Average. Liked jet.
It's not the Beatles.
Zzzzz
Kinda hokey. The songs I like have the least amount of plays on Amazog
This album just confirms that Lennon was the talented one.
what a turd
too much pop sound
Best song: Jet (fuzz bass) Guitars sound out of tune all the time Acoustics are ok Funky beatles 3/10
Ehhhhhh
Not really my jam, a bit too sweet at times, but still not a bad listen. The album starts strong with the first 2 songs (Band On The Run and Jet). The middle felt very Beatles-ish, but a bit flat or boring. The last song however (Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five) was again great.
Trash
It was fine
*Bostezo*
It’s okay
very different sound than I thought would be.
Awful.
Shit shit
I find that none of the solo albums of former Beatles are good. They all work better together than apart.
I just don't like this -- didn't get past the first song.
Not my cup of tea
When the band name contains "so and so and ..." you know you're about to get some self-indulgent prick who'll respond to any feedback with "who the f do you think you're talking to?" No wonder half the band quit on the way to the studio. And so you end up with this, where every song seem schizophrenic, going too long and squeezing in too many ideas. Or just randomly switching back to choruses from earlier songs when the ideas ran out. I'm sure a half decent producer could've distilled something great out of this, but who was going to tell Paul without him cancelling them?
Paul had a lot of ideas for this album. They were all bad. 2.8 Fav track: Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five Least fav: Picasso's Last Words
Didn't listen.
1.5, hate the Beatles ah
Fela Kuti is right about this album. Bland appropration of afro-soul
Granny music
- I don’t fuck with Zionists. - The vocals feel weirdly centred but back, and I don’t find Paul’s singing voice or the harmonies very interesting on this album. It all feels so “old-timey”, like the aggravating repeated Ho hey ho on Mrs. Vandebilt… - The bass was the best part, by far (they definitely felt more forward than the vocals in the mix). Also, some good guitar riffs, but I don’t love the guitar tone. - I only like the first song on the album. The rest of the album just has too much cheesy filler. Every song has something irritating about it, e.g., Mamunia oooooo. - This album just feels thin and trite, especially the vocals. There isn’t enough power to it — it’s too sweet. And I like sweet, e.g., Belle and Sebastian, but I want some spice or tongue in cheek with it. - Let me Roll it is getting on my nerves - yeah, we get that you like that guitar lick… all the tracks feel overbearingly repetitive like this (lyrics and instrumentals).
Beatles yesterday, Wings today?! Unfortunately listening to them side by side, Wings just doesn't rate and "Jets" is just irritating !!
someone please rescue those poor synthesizers and give them to people who can treat them better there are some amazing bass lines wasted on some of the most obnoxious songs you’ll ever hear paul mccartney shouldn’t be allowed to write lyrics. morally or legally helen wheels is an atrocity, like some kind of experiment to find out what happens when you drain all the charm and talent out of a Joe Walsh song it’s annoying because I think mccartney has a wonderful voice that excels in harmonies but I also think when he does music it is a crime band on the run is an entire album of songs that should sound pretty but are instead irritating in ways they didn’t have to be
Not for me.
Well, this album reminded me that, no matter how big a fan I was of the Beatles, with very rare exceptions I just could not get into their solo work. Not even George, who I thought had some of the best songs on Beatles albums. Paul was the worst offender, followed closely by John. But Paul’s solo work (some songs on his first album being some of those rare expections) just showed me how much both he and John needed the other to temper their worst indulgences. Paul was treacly, overly sentimental, just downright goofy sometimes but not ironically and he would have been right at home in some English music hall. His stuff just makes me shudder. There are a couple of okay songs on Band On the Run, Let It Roll and Bluebird (I think) but the rest makes me want to stick pencils in my ears. This is the first time I’ve listened to this album all the way through and it will be the last.
Worst Beatle
This is the kind of music made by someone who is simply doing what he wants. Unfortunately, what he wants to do is make garbage music. Over the course of his career there are a few shiny things buried in the trash, but you will not find them on this album.
no
My heart is like a wheel / let me roll it / let me roll it to you With lyrics like that, it's no wonder this is a band on the run.
Was ist schlimmer als Beatles? Ein Solo Album!
I always thought post Beatles Paul was kind of cheesy. After listening to this album in its entirety I stand by that assessment. Soooo cheesy. The lyrics are just stupid to me. And Bluebird, good grief. Awful. Won’t be listening again.
bad
nope
mccartney same ol dullness
Awful. Paul McCartney may be a gifted musician and song writer but his singing was always shit and he was massively over rated.
Ugh, lump this into the overplayed miasma of Beatles dribble...
Bluebird gave me Stockholm Syndrome. I hated this album so much, midway through that song I tried convincing myself it wasn’t so bad, then came to my senses and carried on hating it the rest of the way through. Hard listen.
No
Peak boomer bullshit. Let me die without having to insist the musical idols of my youth are some type of critical piece of musical education.
First track remains a great tune. Rest of it is meh.
🫠
doesn't grab me 1.5
Not fan of McCartne
No
A couple of hits and some fillers. Next.
Langweilig, uninspiriert und einfallslos
Why is this on this list?
I hate it.
Unworthy contestant.
No
i feel bad giving everything a 1 lmao. but i appreciate this for what it's worth! just not for me ☹️
I don't really like Paul McCartney music
Got pretty bored. They all sounded the same to me.
Not a fan
My pain threshold is about 4 songs. I'm pretty sure when this was released this already was boomer music. I really hate how they repeat the same line for half the song
Not one good song after the two hits. It was so boring. The only good thing I have to say is that it was not very long.
I found it dull, boring.
nice interesting harmonies enjoyed a few bits of songs here and there but overall not my style
Ooof
FUCKIN' sucks fat balls
Fucking Paul
Not it
Oh dear.
Not for me.
Infumable por mucho Paul McCartney que sea. Los Wings no debieron existir
Nice album :)
