Always struggled a little bit with the Stones but SFTD is a AAA track! No Expectations is pretty lovely with Brian Jones slide. Dear Doctor very funny but.... Parachute Woman instantly forgettable Jigsaw Puzzle nah thanks, druggy shit. Street Fighting Man - best track since the first. Great piano and doesn't out stay its welcome. Prodigal So - just white boys pretending to be black dudes. Stray Cat Blues really like this one. Factory Girl - like a hippy Bert Jansch guitar line and a deep south vocal and violin. Should be horrible but surprisingly wasn't. Salt of the Earth closing anthem of a track that sounded like a different band altogether weirdly. Had Springsteen vibes that I liked. All in all - enjoyed it. No track outstayed its welcome. Thanks to it being vinyl I suppose. Not the classic Ive always been told it was but a solid 7/10.

Classic album with some solid bangers.

Sympathy for the Devil is one of the greatest songs ever written. There are a couple other gems on here, but a fair share of skips, too.

Fun album! Starts off incredibly strong with Sympathy for the Devil and continues well from there. Stray Cat Blues, Factory Girl, and Salt of the Earth are good closing trio of songs as well. I don't absolutely love it, but this is an easy four stars.

Sympathy for the Devil Jig Saw Puzzle Street Fighting Man Prodigal Son Stray Cat Blues

A couple of masterpieces in between a few misses. Not the best Stones album but certainly not the worst

A very good album by the Stones. Too big hits and several more interesting bluesy numbers. Charlie's drumming is superb and the backing vocals with the repetitive are original and seem to go on n on. Great vocals by Mick.

I liked most of the songs, some I already knew, some where new.

The first indication the Stones were summiting the mountain, with a return to the blues that feels more authentic than it had previously. In the past 10 years I’d often start listening at track 2, as ‘Sympathy’ feels like a single tacked on to the front of an otherwise very cohesive record. ‘Street Fighting Man’ is one of the weirdest sounding and best productions they ever made, probably their best to date up to this point (Jones’ sitar putting the lie to the idea that his only necessary contribution on this, his final album, was the slide guitar on ‘No Expectations’). The final song, ‘Salt of the Earth’ is the only thing that feels cringey to me- bonafide rock stars singing the praises of blue collared folk maybe plays better in class-conscious Britain, but to my ears it sounds treacly and condescending.

Good overall. A couple hypnotically slow ones though.

Album #65, The Rolling Stones, Beggars Banquet, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is the first album in the Rolling Stones’ purple patch. That said, I do like a lot of what came before it, and plenty of what came after as well. Having also reviewed Let It Bleed and gave it a four, I think this is the more consistent album overall. No song hits the heights of Gimme Shelter, but as a full record it’s probably a stronger four-star album. There’s no influence from Brian Jones and more of that Americana, honky-tonk, country influence that defined the era. Mick Jagger still feels like he’s finding his footing with that style though. On a few tracks it comes across a bit forced, like he’s leaning into it a bit too much. He definitely refines it later on with songs like Dead Flowers and across Exile on Main Street. The unsung hero of this album is Nicky Hopkins. His piano playing elevates everything he touches here, especially on No Expectations, which is my favourite track on the album. When that piano comes in, it just lifts the whole song to another level. It’s a great album, but they still had better to come. For me, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are both five-star records. But, this is the beginning of their best period.

rock on!

Fun album. The blues influence is front and center on this one.

Like it, but at the same time I didn't grow up with it or listen to TRL in particular besides a few songs, I think nostalgic wise other bands do more for me.

My verdict: not their biggest album, but one of their most important. Artistically: sharp, dark, confident. Historically: a major turning point. Pure listening pleasure: very high, especially if you like your rock with dirt under its nails.

Solid good

A very good album that shows a band getting into its stride. Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man are the best known songs for a reason, and Stray Cat Blues sounds great (though the lyrics make you want to report Mick Jagger to the police). There aren’t any bad songs on the album, though probably not strong enough on the whole for 5.

In which the Stones abandon their brief flirtation with psychedelic to embrace their classic bluesy/country-inflected rock sound as the self-proclaimed ‘greatest rock and roll band in the world’. Two of their best and most famous songs are here (‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and ‘Street Fighting Man’), and lots of the other tracks are really great too, especially ‘No Expectations’, ‘Salt of the Earth’ and ‘Stray Cat Blues’, despite the VERY uncomfortable lyrics (definitely not one for karaoke night). I think they have better albums overall, though. This is the beginning of the Stones’ golden age, but not its zenith.

The first album that I own myself to be tossed my way. As with many people, I know this album mostly for the iconic Sympathy For The Devil, but I could happily match the names of most of these songs to this album, and grew up in a house that almost always had music on, with my dad’s love of the Rolling Stones meaning my exposure to them was high. Add to this a friend who has constantly been exposing me to the mere name Beggars Banquet to the past five years, and everything would point towards this being the first album to earn 5 stars. Sympathy just can’t be followed. This album is good, absolutely, songs like Salt Of The Earth and Street Fighting Man support Sympathy well and are well worth a listen on its own, but as a complete package what I received simply wasn’t able to meet the perhaps monstrous expectations I loaded onto it. Well worth your time; 4 stars is still a respectable score of course.

4.5 I’ve listened to quite a few Stones albums for this so far, and while I OF COURSE love many on the songs I hear, if I’m being honest, none of the albums have really worked as a whole for me. Till now! This totally works as a coherent album AND the songs are awesome. Just had this on repeat yesterday.

Will be trying to get this album on record.

Returning from an interstellar trip regrouping with the blues. Starting to embrace a bit of soul. Music for the proletariat. The album scratches an itch, but the itchiness is not dissipated, something later albums would more sufficiently resolve. I'm sat waiting for the world, and this album is keeping me company.

Hits are 5; rest is okay, thus the 4.

I've recently discovered how much I like the Rolling Stones. Appreciating this challenge to listen to all their deep cuts.

Inledningen med Sympati for the devil och No expectation är urstark.

I actually liked this a lot more than I expected. They had almost a folksy sound I wasn't aware of in the few songs I knew of theirs.

Street Fighting Man and Sympathy are perfect tracks. Stray Cat Blues and No Expectations are up there. The rest of the tracks do lack... something, but that doesn't mean they're bad tracks. This is quite clearly and obviously the band finding their feet as genuine artists, a 4 just because it doesn't quite reach the levels of the next few albums. It feels incomplete without those to consider.

Me gusto

Super album !

I was expecting something like Alice Cooper from earlier this week, but it actually turned out to be pretty good! Solid songs.

I'm always so struck by just how damn country the Stones are. They do it well, I can't deny. Decent little record and they almost break their own rule of a great single and some random songs. I actually really enjoyed the B-side of this album and it really does sound fresh for 1968 compared to the godawful psychedelic folk bullshit most of the rest of the UK was peddling.

A great standard classic rock album. I dont really know what to say this was honestly just good. Favorite Track: Sympathy for the Devil

Cool, not a huge stones guy but I enjoyed this

Well, what do you know, a Rolling Stones album that is more than a few gems sunk in a misogynistic miasma. I really liked this one!

Street Fighting Man is a favorite Stones song of mine. I listened more critically to Sympathy for the Devil and appreciate it for how unusual it is. Hand drums, bass, a little piano, and vocals for most of it. There is no guitar until the absolutely badass solo. They get points for making an extended reference to the Master and Margarita, too. In general, there is a lot of variety and chances taken and I appreciate it. No Expectations, Jigsaw Puzzle, and Factory Girl and a few others are all good depth.

4/5 - I like this era of the Stones a lot. I could skip some of the album tracks, but I'll take far more of the songs here than I'll leave. Street Fightin Man is my favorite. Sympathy for the Devil is a great song, but I've heard a few dozen times too many already.

rolling stones halt, sehr gut

I've never listened to a complete rolling stones album, or to be honest very much of any rolling stones music. I thought they were a rock band but this was very much a country, banjo, bluesy kind of vibe. It felt like something I'd hear blasting from the speakers as a kid. A hootin time.

The way people tend to mention the Stones in the same breath as the Beatles makes it sound as if they are contemporaries in a musical sense, but nothing is further from the truth. They are completely a different entity. The Beatles never get this bluesy and gritty. I've never quite understood the reverence these guys elicit, but have always found them to be a capable blues rock band. So far, this is the best Rolling Stones album I've heard. Songs are tidy and polished and it seems to have a cohesive vibe throughout. It was good listen and is just a bit better than some of their other albums on this list.

Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man alone are almost enough to give this an automatic 5 stars. Almost!

Beggars Banquet strikes me as a surprisingly light and even cheerful album at times, despite the themes it explores. From the outset, it makes it clear that this is no conventional record, opening with the controversial “Sympathy for the Devil,” which sets a provocative and distinct tone. Throughout the album, there's a strong presence of blues, folk, and country, but reinterpreted in the Stones' style. Songs like “Dear Doctor” have that country touch with harmonica and an almost humorous narrative about a wedding that never happens, while “Prodigal Son” and “Parachute Woman” lean more towards a simple yet effective acoustic blues. There are also moments where the album picks up in intensity, such as in “Street Fighting Man,” probably the most rock-oriented song on the record, brimming with energy and attitude. In contrast, “No Expectations” brings a more melancholic tone focused on heartbreak, revealing another emotional side of the album. “Stray Cat Blues” stands out for its bold lyrics and blend of rock and blues, while “Factory Girl” has a more folk feel, maintaining the stylistic variety that makes the album so interesting. The closing track, “Salt of the Earth,” works beautifully as a feel-good song, with an acoustic sound that leaves a positive aftertaste. Overall, Beggars Banquet is a diverse yet cohesive album, where The Rolling Stones explore their musical roots with a more relaxed but highly intentional approach. It’s not a heavy or complex record, but it does have plenty of personality and memorable moments.

Very Blues-y, American-sounding album for a British band, I feel. I'll be damned if it doesn't pull it off though. Also, Sympathy For The Devil is an absolute banger and alone makes this a worthwile album. Faves: Sympathy For The Devil, No Expectations, Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man

gooood

"Beggars Banquet" is an album with a few absolutely essential Rolling Stones tracks on it, with the remainder of the tracks being good to very good. A cohesive four stars. Side one 1 "Sympathy for the Devil" (5/5) 2 "No Expectations" (5/5) 3 "Dear Doctor" (4/5) 4 "Parachute Woman" (5/5) 5 "Jigsaw Puzzle" (3/5) Side two 6 "Street Fighting Man" (5/5) 7 "Prodigal Son" (4/5) 8 "Stray Cat Blues" (4/5) 9 "Factory Girl" (4/5) 10 "Salt of the Earth" (5/5) Total - 44 Average - 4.4 280/1001 149/280 albums reviewed were new to me

Screw it, the album actually gets better the more I listen to it. It is not perfect, but it is addictive.

Strange album, but very fun. Some of the repetition in places drove me crazy (the "woo" in "Sympathy for the Devil"). Went it leant more into classic rock n roll like in "Parachute Woman" it really did shine. Any other time I probably would have been in the mood for craziness like "Dear Doctor", but today it was most irritating. Funny, as Doctor Boogie by the Flamin' Groovies I find fun and it had a very similar vibe. Once again, funny, considering that many believe the Groovies to be a rip off of the Stones.

Sympathy of the Devil is one of the 2-3 songs I enjoy by The Rolling Stones, and it serves as the opener to this LP. Iconic.

It's a pretty nice album. Easy to listen to. Has a very Americana type of vibe which, so far, I'm not used to from the rolling stones.

Bäst är Sympathy for the devil, Street fighting man,Stray cat blues och Salt of the earth.

my first time sitting down and listening to a Rolling Stones album front to back. I can hardly believe it, either! this is a band with so many radio staples which have been omnipresent for my whole life, but I'm far from an expert as far as telling you which songs belong to which albums, or even eras. even as I sit here thinking of the words to describe Beggars Banquet, credited as a return to form for the band after Their Satanic Majesties Request was largely written off as a poor imitation of Sgt. Pepper, I struggle to place myself within the entirety of the historical context which surrounds it, in order to understand why it sounds like this, and what it meant for the Stones going forward. I'm sure things will start making a bit more sense once I have a few more of their albums under my belt. I should probably also read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; this record came out at about the same point Hunter S. Thompson points to as being the definitive end of the 60s as an era of optimism, where anything felt possible. the two most enduring tracks on Beggars Banquet are its most political, and they point to cracks that were beginning to form in the flower-power worldview as governments across the world began consolidating power and cracking down on innocents. "Sympathy for the Devil" remains a damning indictment of the culpability of Westerners in the tragedies which their governments commit, both abroad and at home; that's to say nothing of "Street Fighting Man", which some elements of the political left perceived as a call for violent resistance, or even revolution. as far as the music itself, it was strong enough to make Beggars Banquet a huge critical and commercial success for the Rolling Stones, and it provided a strong template of acoustic-driven blues rock which they would build upon with Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and the hugely ambitious Exile on Main St.. lots of British bands owe a debt to American blues artists, and the Stones pay homage to their influences on this front by embracing the more rugged, raw, slightly sleazy end of the genre's trappings. Mick Jagger roars, shrieks and croons through these tracks like a wake-up call to the nervous system; Keith Richards delivers leads and solos with a tone that sounds like it's about to explode; Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts dutifully tie everything together with just the right level of panache. depending on how you quantify it, this is the Stones' final album with meaningful contributions from Brian Jones. despite his infrequent and difficult appearances in the studio, he nevertheless contributed some meaningful moments to multiple songs. in particular, there's his slide guitar performance on "No Expectations", plus the sitar and tanbur overdubs that define the sound of "Street Fighting Man". there's a bit of a "Syd Barrett on Piper" effect whenever I hear him. there's the presence of a uniquely creative mind beset by a host of personal problems; but I'm mostly unsettled by the knowledge that these bands lost (what were once) pivotal members, yet soldiered on all the same. except, in the case of the Stones discography, apparently you get to listen to the process of Jones slowly dropping out, which is eerie! this challenge will include two earlier Stones albums which feature him far more heavily, so I'm interested to get to know a fuller extent of what he contributed to this band. decent 8/10.

pretty solid album, lot of good hits, rest of the tracks were decent.

nije lose

Adel verplicht.

first album that ive already listened, gonna give it another spin but i know ts good man sympathy for the devil has to be one of the best songs ever, not just just written but performed, those jams in between verses, everyone is in flow state goddamn it might be a bit of a hanging matter mick, subtle foreshadowing as the kids say anyways a banger of an album, these four stars might be a bit higher than the stevie album

#63/1001 🇬🇧 This is the start of a run of 4 albums in 5 years by the Stones that form my favourite period of their work. Its a return to the blues sound of their earlier work but with country and soul finding its way in. The standout tracks are of course Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. Stray Cat Blues is a sleazy blues sound with equally sleazy lyrics lusting over a 15 yr old girl. I think the slower No Expectations with its slide guitar is possibly the track that i've most enjoyed re-visiting here. Best Tracks: No Expectations, Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man, Stray Cat Blues.

Like the first song

The first Stones album of the many on this list that's truly clicked with me! :) I liked each song, "got" the vibe of it, and really enjoyed it! :) Also my friend Mark went to see the Rolling Stones on the 6th of July in Hyde park.

Probably one of my favorite Stones' albums, but they still don't have a perfect album. The honky tonk works better in this album, but a lot of it just strums along. Jagger's voices also gets annoying at times.

This starts with "Sympathy for the Devil". Come on. How can you open a record like that? OH IT GETS BETTER? Sure, open with "Sympathy" then. Yeah, it's a great album. Nice, bluesy rock, with a lot to say. The Stones were rocking at this point in their career.

It’s crazy to lead an album off with a song like Sympathy for the Devil. I think that probably stood the test of time for best lead off song until Welcome to the Jungle came along. This will be the 2nd stones album I have listened to all the way through. I’m still surprised that it’s been 20+ years of music listening and I never got into these guys. Sometimes I wonder if Mick tries to write like Dylan from time to time. Jigsaw Puzzle is a perfect example. That’s Dylan at a fast pace. I don’t see what’s so great about Street Fighting Man. So based off of 2 albums. I’m still left wondering what else I’ve missed about these guys. I really do like the sound and the mix of tempo in the albums. There is something missing from them. As in I don’t feel the need to keep listening to see what the next song is. Although I’m not even close to disappointed in what im hearing. This is good but it’s not top tier. But then again you have to like acoustic driven songs. Choice cut: Sympathy for the Devil

A good rock album starts off great second half not quite not quite as good as the first half but still a great classic rock album

Great album and one I come back to time and time again. Is it their best album? No. Do I love it anyway? Absolutely.

Nice album for a roadtrip. Some songs could suit in Peaky Blinders or Texas

This list has made me realize I'm not much of a Rolling Stones fan after all, but of all their albums, this one is my favorite. And Salt of the Earth may be my favorite RS song. There's a pretty cool video from 1989 of Axl Rose singing that song with them if that's your thing.

Goated

4.4 Groovy bangers

It's alright

I got The Rolling Stones' debut album (the UK one) just two days ago, and although I know of course some of the most popular songs by the band, it was my first time listening to a Rolling Stones album in full. It was okay, but I didn't find it very special. This album though, it's miles better. "Sympathy For The Devil" (which is the only song here that I knew before) is an incredible opener; no wonder it's so popular. "Stray Cat Blues" was another highlight for me. I feel like Beggar's Banquet would have been a much better first impression of the band. Recording quality is also much better in this; although the four years in between probably did make a difference in technology. I'm glad for the coincidence of getting both albums so close together as I get a bit more context (with just a couple of days difference) as to what were The Rolling Stones in 1964 and what they were going to be just a few years later. I gave the debut album a 3/5 rating. I'm rating Beggar's Banquet 4/5.

good album

I've heard this one many times.

Sympathy For The Devil is wow 🤩 Love how multi genre this album is!

I feel like every review I do for The Rolling Stones always goes the same way and this album is no different. I talk about how much I love blues rock and how much I adore the massive hit songs on this album and how they are so impactful and important for pop culture. I usually make a comment about how despite really loving this album I’d dint think it was flawless as a whole. I’ll usually mention a few tracks that I found forgettable but it’s only a few out of the whole album, and I’ll talk about how they are fillers but they are not bad enough to hurt the album in a significant way, just basically filler for the runtime. And I’ll say that like all other albums by them I could’ve used more variety of sound but they were literally pioneering their own genre of music so that’s sort of a silly comment. Honestly I just don’t connect with this album enough to repeat my self and go in depth with it, just imagine I did. This album is totally Iconic and worth your time, I’m just have nothing new to say about it. Probably one of their best albums honestly.

Beggars would work far better without the distraction of Sympathy. Sure, it anchors the whole album. But after opening with what is undoubtably a monument, there's nowhere else to go. But without the Sympathy, then Beggars is a really interesting, ragged, almost kooky collection of songs. It captures the comedown of '68. Street Fighting Man should be the lead track. It shows that The Stones were once a very dangerous band.

This is my 5th Rolling Stones album from the list and I think it may have been my favourite so far. Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man are two of my favourite tracks from the Stones and there's a couple deep cuts that I don't know if I've ever heard that I enjoyed a lot like Prodigal Son and Salt of the Earth. That said, I think this has solidified the idea that the Stones are a greatest hits band for me. While I enjoyed listening to this album, and the hits are great, it just doesn't do a lot for me as a whole and I can't see myself ever really returning to anything beyond the hits.

Actually a pretty good album. Definitely a few bangers on it.

My least Favourite, and played, of the peak Jimmy Miller period. Does crawl to a 4, largely saved because of the gospel kicking in right at the end.

Edges a four after a strong start. but is not as consistent as the other albums in what is considered peak stones by me and many others.

I didn't think I was going to like this album as much as I did. I previously thought the Stones were overrated, even as a fan of classic rock. But damn, this album felt great. Some moments of genre bending blues with real talent. Of course, I already knew sympathy for the devil, but I discovered factory girl and salt of the earth.

idk what i was expecting but it wasnt this lofi blues feel, i liked it

its a classic album i am well aware of. the 1st tracks is one of my fav songs of all time.

Another uneven Stones album - however - going into this I had no idea so many of the tracks (at least half?) are acoustic, country-style blues. That was a fun surprise. Since my dad is a boomer and I haven't been living in a cave for the last 60 years I must've heard "Sympathy for the Devil" about a million times. And I don't love it. I made sure to pay attention this time, and at the two minute mark the background vocalists start with the "Woo! Woo!" malarkey, and they don't stop for the next FOUR MINUTES. Good God. That song is also so ubiquitous. Every Vietnam-era movie, tv show, and video game thinks it needs to insert "Sympathy" somewhere or the audience won't know we're in the late 60s. Anyways. The rest of the album is good - especially "Stray Cat Strut" and "Jigsaw Puzzle." I don't think it quite reaches the heights of "Sticky Fingers" or "Exile" but it's still an excellent peak-era Stones record. One other note here - the sound is incredible. Super punchy and crystal clear. I'm not sure who deserves the credit for that, but it sounded wonderful all the way through. FOUR STARS

Hard to give this a fair review as it was on the soundtrack of my youth. I'll just say there are some songs on here I don't enjoy as much as the rest, so a four. Yeah, a four.

Solid album, nice and bluesy stones.

4/10, 40%

I’ve heard a lot of these but never the whole album. Some of their best work

They turn the psychadelic sounds down for a bit and go back to the roots, Street Fighting Man and Sympathy for the Devil are worth the entry in the book, Salt of the Pepper makes it one of the Stones best.

more yeehaw than i imagined, i like!

Gotta love pre-boring Rolling Stones. I prefer their earlier, harder, bluesier stuff but this is great.

Sympathy for the Devil may be my favourite Stones song. Great album.

the stones always get associated with the beatles, which made total sense to me historically but i didn’t see a super strong musical connection until this album. good stuff!

Muito bom. "Sympathy For The Devil" é absurda.

Classic blues rock

8 / 10

I enjoyed listening to that. The only Rolling Stones albums that I currently own are the predecessor and successor to this album so I suppose it's the era of their music that I like the best.

You can tell how much reverence these guys have for all the genres they're cribbing and the performances are all great. This one is the most country / blues / folk forward of the ones from their GOLDEN PERIOD and I like it a lot but it still places #3 of 4. This is great stuff though from one of the best bands at the peak of their powers.

Love the Stones, this one I didn't think was quite 5* as some of the fillers lost my interest a bit. Interesting one as it was properly becoming Jagger and Richards band now - after Satanic Verses the blues-rock sound starts to become properly established on Beggars Banquet.

Great album, a nice feel while staying true to themselves, bit bluesy, exceptional acoustics.

Obviously super familiar with this album, I LOVE sympathy for the devil, however, I had never heard the other songs on this album (every song aside from Street FIghting Man and Prodigal Son). I know the Rolling Stones are English but aside from Mick Jaggers voice, there sound, especially on this album, is filled with soul and reminds me of the south. I didn't realize this album was so blue-sy I was somewhat surprised with how much I loved some of the songs on this album, like No Expectations. The sound of this album reminds me of some of the places I visited while in Nashville. I will say whenever Street Fighting Man comes on, I do usually skip it. I don't always favour Prodigal Son on its own, but in the context of it's album (listening to it all the way through it), I LOVE it. It fits in so well.

Never listened to a full Stones album before so this felt new, but also familiar. Really enjoyed.

I don't even like the Stones that much but Street fighting man and SFTD are classics and the rest of this record is pretty good, too.

Opens with a fire song. Awesome album with legendary songs! 8.4/10

A bit folkier than I remembered, with acoustic guitars playing a big part. Stray Cat Blues is pure filth, in the good sense as well as the bad

is every rolling stones album 1 good rock song and a bunch of folk?

İt is kind of slow, but the lyrics are good. For some moods, it might be great

Love sympathy for the devil, and works great as an opener. I'm always surprised the Stones are more blues-y than I expect. This was alright, 4* Highlights: sympathy for the devil

I only knew the big Rolling stones songs before today including ‘sympathy for the devil’ but I have never actually listened to a whole album of theirs before. I hadn’t appreciated how much of a blues/folk rock sound they have; I liked listening to this album though. The sound is very raw and acoustic, but I think it works as you can feel a bit more of the soul from it. Some other standout songs are ‘No expectations’ and ‘Salt of the earth’ a good range of moods in the songs from the album, I’d say a decent 4-star album.

8 - GOOD

Decent. Can see why they’re one of the biggest bands in the world. 4*

Sympathy for the Devil does a lot of the heavy lifting here but it’s an all time rock song. Tons of fun even after hearing it 1000 times. The back half of the track list is great.

A favorite.

Kan vara deras bästa någonsin. Bara en sådan låt som sympathy for devil

Pretty good

The Stones are back to doing blues rock, and they do a fairly good job. There's a charm to their stripped back approach, which allows plenty of tracks like "Parachute Woman" and "Jigsaw Puzzle" to shine. The big hit "Sympathy for the Devil" certainly deserved its iconic status, but I can't help but feel like it's missing something; I think adding an instrument or two would elevate it to a 10/10 classic. Overall a little shaky, but still a fine collection of bluesy tracks. Standout Tracks: Sympathy for the Devil, Parachute Woman, Jigsaw Puzzle, Salt of the Earth Score: B-

This is one of their best ones.

Pretty good bluesy rock, most likely a 4.

Rolling Stones are always a banger

Beautiful.

I think it's just that "rock n roll piano" is not my thing I could see myself giving this the full 5 with more context or history under my belt, but in this moment and with the sole rubric being "how much I enjoyed listening to it," it's a 4

This was the album where The Rolling Stones really got started. They had some good stuff before this, but the energy and creativity shown on this album is better than everything before it. And to think that after this they went on to do one of the greatest 3 album runs of all time, this really does show them gearing up toward the absolute peak of their career.

Yeah it’s the Stones and they’re legendary but Sympathy for the Devil is really the only track that sticks out here.

Some stone cold classics and otherwise solid blues rock

How I yearn for that 4.5 button sometimes. I’ve flipped a coin and it’s into the four (4) bucket you go with a bunch of other beloved albums and a few mistakes. Sounds like a recipe for a happy family.

I love the sound, style, and cheekiness of this album. I can get behind the devil worship but the preying on teenage girls is my line.

My uncle had a white guy blues rock band when I was a teenager, and one day their bass player quit. In a pinch, he asked me to sit in. More of a guitarist than a bass player (and not much of either), I sat down with this album (which had four of their regular setlist staples) and set about learning the bass lines. Fuck Bill Wyman, these bass lines make no sense. I was left fumbling for notes in front of a bunch of angry old guys who didn't appreciate my "stick to the root note" approach. This album is okay, though.

no expectations was by far my favourite. i can definitely see why this album is so incredibly timeless. however i have to say that i could not see my self listening to this album front to back in the future.

I think I love classic rock and I forgot?

Great album. Best ive heard overall since I started this list but I recently started

Old rock album I would here on my dads radio station

Really love this album. Any album opening with Sympathy for the Devil you k no is is going to be something special. As usual the Stones musically are ragged and it’s a bit all over the place, but for me it makes it all the more listenable. Shrouded in Brian Jones decline and eventual sacking on top of that. Part of a string of albums that truly captures the Rolling Stones at their imperious best.

I’m not a great fan of the Stones, Mick’s affected drawl gets on my wick, he’s from Dartford after all but I liked this album so much I listened twice, I was sort of forced to because my iPhone went a bit wonky but I didn’t hate it. Yes, Mick’s fake southern drawl still irritates but musically and lyrically it was a cracker, I wouldn’t necessarily listen again out of choice but it chugged along quite nicely.

Pretty sick stones record. And im not that big of a stones guy. They are alright but im not a mega fan. Im always thrown off by how rootsy they get. They always read as a rock band from the outside but id give them more of a blues label personally. There is even a really good folk song with factory girl. That might be my favorite track. Without a doubt sympathy for the devil is the big track and its good as hell too. Also got into street fighting man. And all the others are good too, those are the standouts though. Enjoyable listen for sure

Solid album from the days when the Stones made music that sounded interesting. I like the edge on this album, and it’s quintessentially Stones - attitude and personality over technical proficiency. It also includes the only acceptable use of sitar in rock music on Street Fighting Man.

Výborný rockový album. Asi najlepšie od R. S., čo som počul...

Love this. Listened to my vinyl copy, but the band seems to be wearing out, strange to hear this much slowet

Probably the best Stones album I've heard. Helped that I'd heard it much before. Still too American in parts, but Sympathy, Salt of the Earth and a lot else do kick.

This was pretty interesting, some really rootsy blues stuff, but with smatterings of interesting further reaching influences. I'm not a big stone fan and I often find their albums to be very samey across the board with their non single track fairly forgettable, but here each track had its own place and brought something to the album in its own right. I didnt love it, but I appreciated it and I would like to give it further listens.

Knew more songs than I realized. Timeless feel. Sucker punch lyrics.

I love the Stones and this album just solidifies that for me. Short and sweet, every song is pleasant and enjoyable to listen to. Makes me want to drive along the lakeshore with the top down.

it was great! I liked the devil song

I don't really like the Rolling Stones. That being said, they make some pretty solid music. So I will go with a 4 on this one.

Probably their best album tbh

very nostalgic, i feel like im on my uncles boat

Love these old bluesy Stones albums

It was a solid 3 star until Street Fighting Man hit! Strong start with Sympathy.

I don’t think I have a favorite Stones album, but this one is definitely up there. They really manage to make a lush sound with a lot of simple layers. I found Charlie Watt’s drumming remarkably sparse during the solo section of “Sympathy,” leaving plenty of space for Richards and Hopkins to trade off with some of the most musically sophisticated material in the band’s catalog. Other highlights for me are “Jigsaw Puzzle,” “Factory Girl,” and “Salt Of The Earth.” Minus one star for “Stray Cat Blues.”

The Stones go country… Everything about this album is yet another turning point in the direction of music in the 1960s. The nasty toilet room of an album cover. The opening track. The blend of “heavy” riffs, drawling voices and violent lyrics highlight a significant creative shift in this band. The Rolling Stones will always be a blues band, but Beggars Banquet is where they showed they can pick a guitar and sing a song that sounds like it comes from the salt of the earth. Very enjoyable. Very dynamic. Very Stones.

Great album. Great guitar rifts.

This is following the pattern of the last 2 Stones albums I got. 2-3 absolutely outstanding songs and a bunch of generic blues rock filler for the rest of the album. In this case, the filler is a bit higher quality, making this a high 4 instead of a low 4.

timeless sound

Bluegrass and folk feel. Liked it more than other Stones stuff

Sympathy carries a lot of this album, but for me it’s enough to put it up there as an above-average one for sure.

Hmm... it vibes, but it is less rock than I imagined... Some bangers, but mostly middle of the road, not bad, not great... 3 stars for being OK, 1 additional one for the vibe.

7/10 very Rolling Stones, felt a bit similar

Solid 4a!

Not what I expected at all. It felt country/folk at times, which was unexpected. I didn't dislike any of this album, however early on nothing really hit for me. Sympathy for the Devil, however is one of my favorite songs ever made. As the album went on, it got better. More conventional Rolling Stones. I haven't heard any other albums by them yet, but I have heard a lot of their music. I wasn't blown away at all, but I definitely enjoyed listening to this album.

3.5 - Good

Don’t know why I never got into The Rolling Stones- I like this !!

Very good album! Classic stones!

Bangers

I love The Rolling Stones. Some songs more than others. But I’m a sucker for an album with a good closing track. Without the last song, I would’ve given this three stars. A few tracks in the middle weren’t as strong in my opinion, but the combination of the way the album opened and closed made me leave with a more positive opinion. It’s no Some Girls, but it’ll do.

Yeah, course I like this, it’s the Stones man! Glastonbury 2013 and being in the crowd for them was I reckon the biggest crowd I’ve been in, looking across and beyond the Pyramid stage and thinking the place was deserted, then realizing that everyone was watching the Stones. Infectious “woo woo’s” as everyone went into the Somerset night at the end. Lovely

Was Gram Parsons impressed by the country songs, was Dylan impressed with the Blonde on Blonde tribute? Weird to think they have five years of making good music left before the 40+ years of making good money. But Sympathy for the Devil is pretty much a perfect rock song. They should make a movie about it.

long time stones fan, how can you not be? Haven't ever listened to this record start to finish. Yes, SFD is the signature song, but my favorite is No Expectations. It's a beautiful song showing Mcjagger and Keith and Watt's range. Maybe the start of their signature bluesy, folk, rock sound?

Considering this only had 1 of the big hits (debate for two actually)I really enjoyed this album.

Good album.

I grew up listening to this album. I got to see the Stones front row in the late 90s and it was epic.

Du lourd

Very good, a couple I didn’t like as much

Good album. Raw as common with the Stones. SWTD an absolute classic.

Twas a fan

My second Stones album. First one I thought, this is really good but I recognize less than I was expecting. This one I thought, "Ok, here we go--I'm going to recognize a bunch of these." Nope. You get 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Street Fighting Man' and the rest is some pretty laid back bluesy rock. And it's quite good!

Love this period of the stones history. I had just finished reading master and margarita the other day, so when sympathy for the devil came on I wondered if jagger and or Richard’s had read it, and yep. Never did a full listen through of beggars banquet till today, love it.

I don’t think there’s a prominent stready guitar until the third or fourth song. The bass is what stands out to me. The album is great stray cat, blues, and salt of the Earth are tonally not great. The music structure of salt of the Earth are so good but what a weird subject matter and delivery for this band.

7.5/10 - A good album and one of The Stones better albums. A few great songs and a good amount of good songs. Good mix of fun songs and songs that require deeper attention and reflection.

There are 4 excellent tracks here, Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, Stray Cat Blues and Salt of the Earth, the rest are listenable depending on your enjoyment of white guys singing the blues. I don't think this is their best, but it's certainly a worthwhile listen as the first clear example of the sound that would define them, and a sign of the greatness about to come. 4 Stars.

Aparte de "Sympathy for the Devil" descubro nuevas canciones para mi lista.

I had heard the major hits, but not some of the other tracks. Solid album with slower twangy songs to balance out upbeat songs like Street Fighting Man. Overall, enjoyed the album and got a good laugh over the falsetto on Dear Doctor.

Some of their best work in here, but I find a lot of their bluesy songs too sloppy

This album starts off with Sympathy for the Devil. That alone gets it a high score. But it also makes it a tough act to follow. The rest of the album is good, but none of it measures up to one of the greatest songs of all time.

01) Sympathy for the Devil - 10,0 02) No Expectations - 8,0 03) Dear Doctor - 8,0 04) Parachute Woman - 7,5 05) Jigsaw Puzzle - 8,0 06) Street Fighting Man - 8,0 07) Prodigal Son - 7,5 08) Stray Cat Blues - 8,5 09) Factory Girl - 8,0 10) Salt of the Earth - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,15 (82/100) Current ranking: 190/745

A pierwszy utwór to sztos nad sztosy. 7/10.

Jorå men let it bleed är bättre

No nyt maistuu nelkun verran.

Hieno levy. Komeita sävellyksiä ja hyvää tulkintaa.

Muy bueno

Amazing album.

Grandi gli stones, ottimo ritmo ottima musica.

(listened before) a good album

I like when the stones do the blues and folk

Hard to go wrong with the Stones. Fave track: Sympathy for the Devil, of course

I've obviously heard a few of their songs before but I never listened to any of their albums all the way through until now. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

The beginning of their golden age.

Love the stones and while not favorite is still worth taking the time to lit

Much more traditional blues than I was expecting. I always think of them having more of a rock & roll edge, but this had more of a nod-along feel to some of it. Impressively delivered though

Might be my fav Rolling Stones album so far.

A very solid album, but not among my favorites from the Stones.

The traditional blues emphasis always shocks me with the stones even though everyone knows that is there main influence. The main greatest hits singles are just these epic rockers and the rest of the album plays with more traditional blues sounding instrumentation/songwriting in a good way. Definitely a nice listen.

Enjoyed the album a lot. Once again never listened to the full album before. Every song is excellent. Definitely one of their best.

The Stones we all love reached their peak here. Made me miss Charlie Watts even more.

Much more acoustic than I anticipated. Probably the first Stones album I've listened too.

Ideally I'd give it 4.5 because I really don't like Parachute Woman or Jigsaw Puzzle, but that's just me.

The first Stones album I heard in full, the start of their classic run of 4, and the only Stones album I've bought... so far at least. As such, it's the album of theirs that I know best. It starts with by far the strongest track on the album, but the rest is of a consistently high quality, in that classic Stones style. _No Expectations_, _Jigsaw Puzzle_, _Street Fighting Man_ and _Salt of the Earth_ in particular are all great too.

This album has some real classics on it, but I don't think the album maintains the momentum or energy introduced in the opening track.

Fine but they have better

I like this tbh. Not the best stuff I’ve ever heard but good.

I was really expecting to cringe my way through this one. But it’s surprising. I’m convinced that The Stones are to blame for the resurgence of country music. They were already well-studied in old American rhythm and blues by ‘66. Everyone else was just trying to catch up. It was great to hear them tie it in with British folk music. There’s a genuine intelligence to the music. There’s reverence for the original inspirations. The Stones are unfairly treated like a punchline. But their records are beautifully produced. And it’s clear how much influence this had. You can hear it in other albums on this list.

Tons of fun.

Catchy melodies, sharp lyrics, and fantastic bluegrass-esque sound. Really enjoyable listen.

I haven't listened to this album in a while. Solid album from the Stones.

For the first time in nine days something worth listening to. Not the Stones best effort, but solid, like the bluesy feel to some of the tunes. 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Another classic output from the Greatest Rock n' Roll Band (of all time?)

Very much a Rolling Stones album. Keen to pretend they aren't that deep but they are. Obviously a must listen

really liked this one from the stones

Steel guitar stones! Salt of the earth! F-yes! Love this album always have but haven’t listened to it end to end in decades!

The Stones establish their late 60s focus on blues and roots rock with Beggars Banquet. I have already covered another Stones album from this period (Let It Bleed) and have dug into Exile On Main Street plenty of times (I love it), so this was a new one. Compared to the record before this, Banquet redraws the lines back from psychedelic color to rusty gold. You can't go wrong with Sympathy For The Devil as the opener of course, but other songs deserve as much recognition. Those being Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man and No Expectations. This record presents a nice jump into the style that the Stones would go on and perfect on Exile 4 years later. My opinion is that their later work is superior, but this begins a great journey for the Stones. The licks are only going to get louder from here (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)

This album is why I can forgive all the ones that aren't good.

I love this album. It was the beginning of an insane stretch of music over the next few years, where they hit a slot of great blues/rock n roll roots music. A few standout tracks in Sympathy For The Devil, and Street Fighting Man, but really the sound is what does it for me,

Uniquely good and unexpectedly good. Barely a 4 but still a 4.

One of the all time great rock n roll albums

classic rolling stones sympathy for the devil is an all timer fancy lady also bangs

Typical Stones album, which means there are two or three all time great singles and a bunch of loose jams that mostly work. Probably best listened to at dive bars or rowdy barbecues.

Opening song is a perfect rock and roll song. Love the guitar on No Expectations - I think Marcus King has borrowed that for one of his songs. I wasn’t expecting the direction the album went - delta blues and then basically honky tonk. Not my favorite Stones album, but one absolutely perfect song is worth a lot.

Sympathy, Street Fighting Man, and Salt of the Earth are highlights, but even my less favorite tracks are solid. Nice cohesive album, ties all the way through end to end. I'll prob listen to couple more Stones albums today, which I think is a true test of how good an album is.

I always forget about the Stones. This was a very enjoyable listen, kicks off the string of 4 really great all time albums from them. Loose and fun rock n roll. Sympathy for the devil is one of the best songs of all time

It's a top-five Stones album, which puts it in some exalted company. The more country-blues end of their musical spectrum, which I know doesn't float everyone's boat. Surely hard to argue with the likes of Sympathy for the Devil though.

cool cool

My favorite song on this album sympathy for the devil

I like how we have two distinct album covers. One being an invitation to a dinner party. Elegant. Decadent. The other (the original initially rejected), being the image of a crusty old toilet surrounded by graffiti. Then you realise both are appropriately connected together.

Overall: 8/10 The thing I like most about this album is the amount of acoustic guitar used in it. I find a lot of the songs very pleasant and relaxing to listen to. I wasn't incredibly aware of that side of the Stones until I started doing this challenge. With that being said though, Street Fighting Man is my favourite song cause it rocks so hard. It's the best use of Mick's voice and I'll never get sick of it. Fav Song: Street Fighting Man

Love it. Stone cold classic

Excellent 👍

Sympathy alone makes this brilliant, but stuff like No Expectations push it toward a 5. It can get bogged down in sameness sometimes that can push it toward a 4. But damn this is a fun record (Stray Cat Blues!) and belongs at the top of any collection.

Before they were parodies of themselves and were proper musicians exploring Blues and Rock and were still groovy young men. This is still the era where I liked them.

This is one I tried to get into on friends' recommendations when I admitted to not typically falling for Stones' albums. Love the hits, amazed at how many career-making songs the band has produced over the years, but from an album perspective, I'm usually left liking the hits best. So it is for this album, though "Sympathy" alone makes this worth the inclusion. I tried again, and there's lots of moments within songs, but I can't say I love the album. The 4 is a nod to the sheer importance of the opener, and the rest is along for the ride (at least for me).

- I enjoyed this more than I expected to, although there were several moments where a few chords or notes of the melody sounded very, very similar to other Stones songs. that isn't a bad thing so much as it is just unique -- I guess I'd rather be recognized for sounding like my other songs than not sounding like anything (i.e., not being memorable in the first place) - I think the band would not have gotten where it is today without Mick Jagger as the vocalist. he brings 70% of the life to this album, and there's a significant gritty portion that sounds almost like proto-punk similar to what the Clash vocalist would later sound like (although maybe I'm just a dumb American and can't separate a specific British accent from the music in which I hear it most prominently; I also have no idea if the Clash were influenced by the Stones at all) - I grew up hearing most of these songs dozens of times (maybe more), but I never knew "Sympathy for the Devil" was the opening track. if that was the first song I'd ever heard of the Rolling Stones after buying this record at the corner store or listening to it in a friend's room one afternoon (idk how people listened to new music back in the 60s, but I'm sure it was likely to be a much more social event than it is today), I would be hooked overall, more solid than I anticipated, and listening to the entire album instead of hearing just the hits over the radio for once was a nice treat

It’s real good

Decent stuff, Symphony is pretty great. 3.6

It’s good, some less good songs though ig (stray cat blues or whatever has wild lyrics)

Dad- 7.5 Mom- 6 Mike- NA Lori- 8 Michael- NA Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 7.17

Dang, really good album, i had forgotten about it

classic

Classic. This album is dunked and dripping with the blues. Balls to the wall rock n’roll. Stray cat blues was one I’ve never heard before and blown away by it. This is the vintage stuff that requires preserving and sharing. “Salt of the Earth” is my new drinking song. I know the stones have gone through periods of experimentation that was required of the time to stay relevant but I love this album for how hard hitting and raw it is. No gimmicks, just licks. Like a love letter to Robert Johnson and those who influenced these English lads. Fucking great.

4.5 not a bad song here. What a delight it must have been putting this fresh record on the turntable.

Some hits some misses

Believe it or not I never listen to this album before. I know all the singles but I'm glad I listened to the whole thing because it turns out the rolling Stones are a pretty damn good blues fan. I appreciate it the quality of the recording but like many albums in the 60s some things are painfully to the left and I can't hear him cuz I'm tired of hearing in my left ear so I think I missed a solo or two. Regardless, sympathy for the devil's still my favorite rolling Stones song, and this is probably a five-star album for most but I'll say four for me.

I've listened to this so much that I feel like it's embedded in my brain at this point. It's hard to listen to with fresh ears. But it's also so familiar that it's really comforting. Your can see the clear through line to Exile here. Overall great stuff

mick jagger painaa pauttia rallakkaa 35 kiloa , joista puolet menee jättinenään ja homohuuliin! uskomaton fysiikka.. how to obtain this... pikkukakarat biitlekset soitti mitä soitti tähän aikana nauratti lapsia ja näin. samaan aikaan kivet oli RAAKOJA. RAAKA liha ja makkaraaa ja kaljaa eikä mitään tyyliä, ei mitään vitun kyselyitä & bullshit: pelkkää 100% panomista ja seksiä koko yö!! analyysiini voin myös lisätä albumitaide: vessanpytty likainen ja piirroksia seinällä raaaah likainen ja karkea ja iljettävä fuck-you attitude!! biitles vittu pikkulapsien kerhotalo hei hie mikki hiiren kerhotalo päälle sama asia kun biitlessit vittu ei ehkä mulle jos tykkäät niin ok mut ei vaan mulle: not for me. sympathy for the devil

This feels like the only Stones record I have had so far that doesn't fall off a cliff after an iconic opener

Semi decent

Definitely better than Exile. Sympathy and Street Fighting Man were favorites. A few bluesy folksy songs that weren’t my jam but it’s worth relistening to.

Enjoyable, zero pretence. 4.

4.5 Some of Keith Richards' best work.

My dad always said that when he was a teenager, you were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan. I think it's pretty hard to pick, but if the rest of the Stones' discography is like this album, I'm leaning more towards their side. Granted, I have a soft spot for 60s folk rock. Bob Dylan and The Band are both great, it sure would be great if they made music together. Anyways, I feel like this album's proof that you don't need to completely reinvent the wheel to make a good album, as much as I love artists that do that. It's a good folksy album with really silly and well thought out storytelling throughout it. There isn't much that's needed in the genre past that.

First Stones album I've listened to in full. I likey.

Heerlijk album, vele classics er ook op

Blues, folksy, spiritual.

Classic goodness

Record showcases what a great band the Stones were. Serious blue on this one. Sympathy and Jigsaw are fantastic. The beats in Jigsaw are captivating.

The Stones have always been a 'greatest hits' band for me, so it is a good exercise to listen to some of their albums fully and in more depth! As I had suspected, it feels like the two 'hits' on the album do stand head and shoulders above the rest of the (still enjoyable) tracks. Sympathy for the Devil is one of my all time favourites and Street Fighting Man is another Stones classic. From two listens, none of the other songs grabbed my attention massively, but I still really enjoyed listening through. 7/10

My band when I was 22 was called Last Arcade and we did a cover of Salt of the Earth and one time a local alternative weekly music reviewer in Columbus OH saw us and told me he was going to put our live version of that song in his "top 10" of the year. He didn't specify what category of top 10 that it was going to go into nor did he actually ever mention us in any top 10 lists, but he was right in the moment that we fucking rocked that song. I owned this album at the time and listened to it a fair amount. The Rolling Stones are not my thing, but if any of their albums is my thing, I guess its this one.

Yeah, I like this. Their best offering on here so far. The bluesy style suits them and this grew on me on second listen. Still a Greatest Hits girl when it comes to them though

Great album, 6 of 10 tracks are rock staples.

Mostly for "Sympathy for the Devil"

Excellent album, though I am much more partial to Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main Street.

This was a cleaner and more restrained - in a good way - version of the Stones from how I usually envision them. Each track feels controlled and thoughtfully constructed. Vocals are uneven but that’s no surprise. Vividly constructed characters in the lyrics. Listened to: walking through Brooklyn. Favorite tracks: Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man

So good

High energy, always fun to listen to.

The Rolling Stones are THE rock and roll band of all time…undeniably iconic. This album definitely defined an era and also cemented the Stones global impact. Even if you're not a regular listener, chances are you still know the words. That’s how deeply their music has permeated the culture. This album has: legendary tracks, raw energy, and that signature swagger and sex appeal that only the Stones could deliver. The sound is solid and pure and it feels timeless. What stands out to me is the universal appeal. There’s something in this music that connects across generations and borders. I don’t listen to it all the time, but when it comes on, I’m never mad about it. The name, of course, is an A+ and I love that it’s a reference to Muddy Waters.

Starting to think I should listen to more Rolling Stones.

Had a great time with this album, lots of great songs, I think street fighting man is the best song I’ve heard in a while really loved it. My only critiques are that I think a couple of songs were a minute or two too long, and the more twangy folk stuff didn’t wow me as much as the more rock oriented tunes, though I still enjoyed them.

I think overall I still enjoy Exile on Mainstreet more but Street Fighting Man is just one of my favorite songs so bonus points for that. 'Sympathy For The Devil' suffers from the fact that it was used in so many things in the past half of a century and it drags on too long. Still a good listen, maybe in terms of music people should hear before they die it would be good to find the sources of inspiration in American blues music as there was some well executed borrowing here.

Sympathy for the devil is one of the greats The rest is very good
