Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Found a couple of songs off putting mostly familiar and liked
Typical Stones album. One minute rock n roll, then blues, country and gospel. First time listening to it in its entirety. Superb. Sympathy is possibly the best tune they ever did. Micks vocals don’t sound quite right to me though. Can’t put my finger on it. Not quite as good as Exile but a blueprint for what was to come. Still a great collection of tunes. Unbelievable this came out at the end of the sixties. Sounds much more contemporary.
Arguably the best first song of an album ever. Great bluesy Stones.
Some nice songs in here like sympathy for the devil. I hope stray cat blues is from the pov of a character, because that dit not age well otherwise
It’s a bar fight where the piano’s drunk, the drums are flirting, and Mick’s yelling scripture at you through a mouthful of biscuits.
Really liked it. Good vibe throughout and some nice catchy stuff. 4 stars
4/5
Solid throughout, occasionally thought "this is cliche" but then realized they probably created the cliche... Liked how the songs flowed into each other. Really dug Stray Cat Blues and Factory Girl and of course Sympathy is an all time banger
Still holding out for a 5* Rolling Stones album.
Première écoute de cet album hormis le singleton sympathy for the devil 🥰🥰 Retour dans les années 60-70! Pour un groupe connu pour son rock et se déchaîner sur scène, album très country!
I love the Stones. And actually every time I listen, which is pretty often nowadays, I love them more. Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man have long been two of my biggest favourites. Rest of the album is chill and easygoing, much less ‘rock’ than some of the work they’re perhaps more famous for, almost more folky at moments. Great stuff all round, if again maybe not their most standout selection.
The problem with never having listened to a lot of classic bands, and then listened to a hundred other albums, is that by the time you get to them, everything just sound a little deritivate. I can definitely appreciate the music is fun and good, but it just doesn't sound all that different to me than half a dozen bands that have come before. It's a weak four from me.
Starts with an absolute classic! Country tinged tracks, blues, rock and roll, the Stones different sounds are all here, some are not exactly timeless, but a very solid album! 4 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes. 2/1001, 2/13 (15%) Will I get? Already have Recommend: Sure
Great early rock and roll
Not really album related (or maybe it is), but I really enjoyed the stereo mixing of the 50th anniversary edition of this. That aside, though, this is just another really solid, varied, and well-performed Stones record. Opener is an obvious banger, but 'No Expectations' is one of the better mellow country-rock songs I've heard from them. I mean, generally, this album's pretty mellow, not as dirty as I'd maybe like, but songs like 'Street Fighter Man', 'Parachute Woman', and especially 'Stray Cat Blues' still pack that bluesy grit that I generally enjoy out of these guys. The basslines here standout generally, more than other stones records, I especially loved the one on 'Jigsaw Puzzle', works as a nice constant as the song builds throughout its 6-minute duration. Can't put my finger on exactly what this song's about, but the imagery and the slew of different, colourful characters gives it an almost Bob Dylan-esque feel - I liked it. Honestly, I really like 'Sticky Fingers', but this is certainly a contender for my favorite Rolling Stones album now. It's just consistently enjoyable, and a very satisfying listen.
Very bluesy and consistently good. Sympathy For The Devil is an epic opening track. Stray Cat Blues was the other standout to me.
Enjoyed this - favorites were: "Sympathy for the Devil" (of course), "Jigsaw Puzzle," "Stray Cat Blues," and "Salt of the Earth." Looking forward to more Stones albums as I continue through this project. It has become clear to me that they are one of the lasting, greats-of-all-time musical groups. I knew it already, of course, but digging deeper into their older albums has cemented that for me.
A couple hits, good bluesy rock, what’s not to love?
I've never heard a whole album by them before, and I'm surprised I liked it so much. I especially liked Jigsaw Puzzle.
Incredible god damn. The stones rule and this album has no fat. Massive fan love the country vibe
Great americana sounding rock album. 4.5 stars
Enjoyed the blues sounding record with a sprinkle of that signature sound that would define The Stones
Some great old filthy Stones - a slinky album, exploring new sounds for the band alongside some ripping rock and melodic masterpieces. Favourite tracks: Sympathy, Jigsaw Puzzle, Factory Girl, Stray Cat Blues
i mean cmon sympathy for the devil is so good idc if it's too popular. great album
enjoyable
Salt of the Earth 5/5 Stray Cat Blues 4/5 Street Fighting Man 4/5
Every time I listen to a Rolling Stones album, I tell myself that I should listen to them more. I am again saying that but will this finally be the time that I follow through? Solid album and, as always, some surprises compared to how I usually envision the Stones.
great sounding album a few classics
Couple great tracks - Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man - but for some reason it's always felt to me a grade below Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed and Exile on Main St.
solid work with a few standout tracks
My least favorite album from the most perfect 4 album run in rock and roll. Very familiar and love this album, just listen to sticky and let it bleed more, I like the non-famous cuts a little less on this one
I mean, it's got Sympathy for the Devil on it! I haven't listened to this one in a decade - bluesey songs beat out the rootsy songs 110%. But, pretty consistently good songs all around (did I mention Sympathy for the Devil????)
Really haven't listened to many stones albums, they considerably more experimental than I had imagined. Starting an album with sympathy for the devil is a flex.
So...not a very big stones fan. its very rocky, but its not the wanky rock...and I don't mind that. I much prefer gram parsons country influenced stones (like sticky fingers exile on main street era), but this was pleasant enough to listen to. I am not going to rush out and find a copy to add to my collection but i might listen to it again. 4 stars
i really enjoy this era from the stones
The Stones want to be American so bad… at least musically
Brian Jones last record. Back to a more blues based sound. Start of a pretty good run for the Stones
Great album, can see why it's one of the best Stones records. 8/10
нормалек.
Obviously amazing
Definitely some of their better stuff
Great album, with some fantastic tracks
I wanted to give this a 3, but street fighting man and sympathy….
Como vas a arrancar un disco con el mejor tema de la historia? Tenes que cerrar el estadio. Me gusta el estilo country/blues de gran parte del disco. Los Rolling son lo mas grande que existe.
Liked it pretty good!
Really good but no super standout songs besides Sympathy. Not sure why I don't listen to the stones a lot.
Pretty good classic rock album. Couple elite songs that hold up and a few dated Stones songs. Would give it 3.5 but I’ll round up
worse than i remember but still really good
I'm not really a fan of The Rolling Stones. I just find them a bit meh. I'm also not huge on Mick's voice This album was a very nice surprise because its much better than their other stuff I've heard. Controversial opinion maybe but I've never liked Sympathy For The Devil. But the rest of the album was decent 4 ⭐️
I like this one, I appreciate that it’s just a solid 10 tracks, 40 minute run time. Unlike many albums that came out at a similar time. I enjoy most of the songs, some are ok, but the majority are still very enjoyable to listen to. The ones that are okay just don’t stand out as much Good overall Fav tracks - Sympathy for the devil - No Expectations - Jigsaw Puzzle - Prodigal Son - Factory Girl Worst track - Street Fighting Man
After listening to many rock albums from this period of time through this project, it striking how innovative this album was. I can't imagine how exciting it would have been to hear it on its release. It also holds up even today and probably always will. Incredible music and just the beginning of a string of albums that would create the legends they would ultimately become. The opening song, Sympathy for the Devil, is emblamatic of why this album is among the greats. Catchy hooks intermixed with episodes of singing guitar riffs that scream rock and roll, all accompanied with the bouncing piano and lyrics that comes together into a fun song that will always bring a smile to my face. At the time of this review, there were ~660 million listens on Spotify, so I'm clearly not alone here. The pace changes dramatically, with No Expectations and Dear Doctor, which lean into a blues influence, while still seaming much more fresh than other artists of the area experimenting with similar sounds, Like Rod Stewart who I got yesterday. The Stones deliver something that seems unique and exciting, making this all their own. With Parachute Woman the album veers toward rock and roll again, a great albeit short song. Street Fighting Man follows a couple of songs later giving us another classic Stones tune that had me think, "Man, I love this album!" Then into the bluesy, folksy Prodical Son. Stray Cat Blues rounds up the album with another banger. Not all of these songs are great, some are. but they are all good and they come together to make a cohesive album that is among the best in this period of music history. The 50th Anniversary Edition of this album has exceptional production quality and giving another listen with better equipment revealed more nuance than I picked up on my first listen. I don't frequently listen to the Stones, but I do occasionally get the itch. These days that mostly means listening to the artist as opposed to specifc albums. I think I need to change that.
The Stones do one thing, but they do it very well. This is a solid piece of blues rock.
4’5
A few classic songs but also some filler... the Stones didn't really put it all together until the album after this. Regardless, when Jagger and Richards are pushing themselves out of their comfort zone you can see glimpses of what the band would become just a couple years later.
It’s good, maybe even very good, but not great to my ears. I’ll fully admit my thoughts are probably skewed because I have heard so many groups that were heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones, making it difficult to put them in the proper context for their time and place. I’m going to be generous and say 3.5 rounded to 4 stars, for their influence on rock and/or roll.
Nice bluesy rock and roll
Fav: Sympathy For The Devil Least Fav: Factory Girl A pretty stellar first half, but I really didn’t care for some of the stuff on the second half like Prodigal Son and Factory Girl
Classic, unforgettable songs
How many times can I say something is classic? But it's truuuuuuue.
I am a partisan of the next 3 Stones albums, but this is obviously very good. You should watch Jean-Luc Godard's Sympathy for the Devil to see the genesis of that song (along with some other Godard shit). Jigsaw Puzzle is very underrated, I think. Stray Cat Blues goes hard, but those lyrics, yeesh. I guess it's honest at least, all those classic rock guys were having sex with underage "groupies".
Albumazooooo re bluesyyy tiene Sympathy For The Devil, y Street Fighting Man y Prodigal Son me parecieron temazos. Y buenas letras. Buenas vibes. Definitivamente un 8 o 9.
Starting off strong with "Sympathy For The Devil" with this album. "Street Fighting Man" is the other big one I know of this. All in all, a classic album, but not my top 20.
Amazing album. So fun to listen to, not as many of the "greatest hits" tracks as some of the other Stones albums folks are familiar with, but sounds so good almost 50 years later. The blues influence shines through, and it's some of Keith's best work imo.
This will be my first time ever listening to a complete Rolling Stones album lol. Nick would be proud. I have heard more of these songs than I expected to. Dear doctor is so funny and a little theatrical! I love the country twang to all of this, doesn't really sound how I expected the rolling stones to sound. But I guess I don't really know what I expected either. I like this! More with each song! I don't LOVE his voice but it fits the songs very well. The first half is much better than the second in my opinion but not terrible. I enjoyed it but I'm ready to hear something else.
KLASSIKER! Sympathy for the Devil!! Salt of the Earth!!!
Sympathy for the Devil is of course super mega baller. Rest of the album didn't really land.
Solid
Interesting blues and folk sounds make this an enjoyable experience. Quality of songs varies quiet a bit tho. Many bangers but some rather mediocre pieces as well. However great overall!
This is The Rolling Stones sound.
3.5* 85%
Enjoyable listen. Good tunes.
I like the more bluesy stones stuff. This sound works well for them and I thought it was a good listen
Great album and I’m only giving it a 4 star since it’s not my fav Stones album and there were a few just OK songs. Too bad they don’t play some of the lesser known songs on their tours!
A few good songs
Enjoed the first half greatly. Sympathy for a devil, is a huge opening track and could carry the album on it's own. I enjoy the more classic rock type songs more, the album interestingly seems to jump between rock and blues/americana
The watershed moment between clean-cut, pop Stones and scraggy, drug-addled blues Stones. It feels like they're awkwardly groping in the dark to find themselves in places, but those moments when it comes together (Jigsaw Puzzle) are spiritual experiences.
Woo hoo I had too much fun with this album. I just wish it had a little more woo hoo in the second half of the album. Favorite Track: "Sympathy For The Devil".
Pretty good. Sympathy is an all time great.
most I’ve enjoyed a stones album so far
As I get older I've realised I listen to a lot more Stones than Beatles. They just make cool music.
always magnificient
4.5, but that's not an option Classics and some lesser known, but really great songs
Not their best, but still better than most.
Brilliant record
The Rolling Stones are Gods, Icons, and genre setting rock-n-roll royalty. They are legend for a lot of reasons, but one of them, to be sure, is their amazing catalog of music. Beggars Banquet is a big part of music history and the "British Invasion" and at the end of the day it earned its place as the band has at being at the center of the big table at the front of the music room.
Ну такое? Вроде вайбово, но даже слушая на фоне устаешь, ибо не мой стиль. А так вайбы фильмов о 70-х, виниловых пластинок и комфортных вечеров какой-то осени/зимы. Пару песен себе забрала.
Strong start, loses my attention towards the end
I love their exploration of different instrumentation on this album. The piano really ties it all together but you can tell they were interested in trying new and exciting stuff. There are one or two awful songs on here but I think most are good.
Some classic rock tracks
Decent album last song finishes soo good
In all fairness to Mr Costello there seems to by a shit ton of Rolling Stones here. Difference here is I like it. So much material from this band I can’t believe I used to think they were overrated. They have overtaken the who on my list of British rock royalty. Great record
Sympathy For The Devil // No Expectations // Jig-Saw Puzzle // Salt Of The Earth
Best opening/closing songs on an album in their catalog. Bluesy, roots rock. Sounds like it was recorded in a Mississippi dive bar. Can feel the smoky room. An outstanding recording front to back; top 5 Stones album. Great groove through the entire album. Sympathy is one of the best songs recorded…ever
Without question, "Sympathy" is the strongest track on this album (and one of the strongest the band ever recorded), and one could argue the rest of the album wouldn't have worked without it. I do, however, enjoy the stripped-back acoustic nature of many of these songs... gives the performances a more intimate feel.
Like most of the Stones' output, this is pretty good, yeah, 3.5*
Good classic album
Mostly bangers
Stones albums always sound like variations on a single musical idea the whole way through
Ya know, when I saw this one pop up, I wasn't super excited. I had a good Stones phase, but I haven't listened to them in years. My memory of this was kind of country-ish and acoustic-ish. But maybe that's what kept them grounded before 1975. I was happy to give this another listen. Sympathy for the Devil- the rare song that cannot be overplayed- and yeah, people have tried. What's those drums? Conga? That's a great beat that holds the entire song together. No Expectations- when I was a kid, I didn't realize how many blues standards the Rolling Stones were playing- not all of them are improvements though- this sounds like a blues standard even though it is an original Dear Doctor- a funny song about a guy who is getting married to a girl he has no attraction to and getting drunk- well-written if nothing else Parachute Woman Jigsaw Puzzle- a bluegrass rocker about depression Street Fighting Man- I don't think I ever liked this as much as I was supposed to- they are going hard on the maracas in this song Prodigal Son Stray Cat Blues- Keith Richards at his best is great, this is one of his better showings Factory Girl- Salt of the Earth- why don't more Americans get down with this as a drinking song? I think we hate the actual idea of being Salt of the Earth- we all want to be middle class
Beggars Banquet was one of the first albums I truly fell in love with growing up. “Sympathy for the Devil” remains a stunning opener—bold, provocative, and utterly iconic. “Street Fighting Man” is just as powerful, and I’ve always had a soft spot for “Factory Girl,” especially after hearing the live version on Flashpoint, one of the first albums I ever owned. Revisiting Beggars Banquet now, what strikes me most is how stripped-back it sounds. The production is raw, the lyrics often angry and biting—it's gritty in the best way. There are some undeniable highlights, but also a few tracks that hold it back from being a perfect 5/5. Songs like “Prodigal Son” and “Dear Doctor” don’t quite hit the mark for me, and I feel the album could have used a couple more standout tracks to elevate it further. In summary, Beggars Banquet might not reach the heights of Exile on Main St., but it's still a very strong album and a pivotal moment in the Stones' evolution. Favourite song: “Sympathy for the Devil” – an all-time great with that unmistakable Stones sound. “Street Fighting Man” is brilliant too, and I love some of the lesser-known gems like “No Expectations,” “Jigsaw Puzzle,” and of course, “Factory Girl.” Least favourite: “Dear Doctor” feels a bit naff and throwaway. Album artwork: A classic. One of the most memorable and iconic covers in rock history.
Good
Great album, not as good as Exile.
4 out of 5. Banger album.
Have to say, I do have sympathy for the devil when he says “all cops are criminals” and killing the Romanovs was pretty good of him too!
Good stuff. Sympathy for the Devil is a banger of course. Simpsons: Yes
Nice music
I somehow had never listened to a Rolling Stones album start to finish previously. I've certainly always thought of them as a singles type band. I was presently surprised at the quality of this album as I was expecting to just enjoy the 2 singles I had previously heard.
the stones are such a weird band for me where they like have some immaculate singles that blow my mind but I've just never enjoyed the album tracks all that much if I'm being totally honest. think I like this one the most of what I've heard tbh I like the grit in the production I could see myself getting more into these songs. kinda like that it's almost claustrophobic in a sense like on "Prodigal Son" jaggers doing some weird vocal thing with a guitar part and limited drums and then there's cool details surrounding the song in subtle ways. also the riff on "Stray Cat Blues" goes bananas.
The ONLY Rolling Stones album that I do enjoy.and consider great. Sympathy for the Devil is hell of a tune. Jig-Saw Puzzle is good too, Bob Dylan vibe. I like Salt Of The Earth too. Really can't think of anything picky to say towards this album. Love it, and it definitely deserve a 4/5.
4.1 3x catch up multiple days but 4/22 rated
own
A fantastic album that really had a huge impact when it came out in 1968, can't really go wrong with the stones.
this some vietnam shit, why is sympathy for the devil so long, so close to a 5 but just barely not
Bra och stadig rock and roll!
I didn’t realize how many extremely popular songs came from just this album.
Love the stones
I had No Expectations coming into this. It was like a Jigsaw Puzzle of an album.
I understand some of the criticism I've seen on here - there is a tad too much r'n'b filler material on Beggar's Banquet. However Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, and Salt Of The Earth are all top tier Stones. No Expectations may not push the envelope in the same way, but is still a fine tue. The highs outweigh the ws, this is a great Stones record in my book.
Classic stones sound.
Sympathy for the Devil is in the Top 10 all-time songs
A return to form for the Stones. While the tracklist is solid and no track stands out as objectively bad, the Rolling Stones have tread this ground before. What comes out is a perfectly fine album with fantastic songs but nothing innovative or unique from what we have already heard. Worth a 4 for composition, not mixing.
it’s pretty good
Great album, enjoyed having it in the background, there are some nice jams but the biggest one is of course Sympathy For The Devil.
Really good, it is the Rolling Stones so expected, for me personally it dropped in enjoyment with the three country songs on the album although dear doctor I actually quite liked so only 2 songs I wasn’t a fan of, the rest were really good. 7.5/10
Of all the Stones albums from their peak years, I think this is my least favorite. It's a great album, obviously, but I am partial to Let It Bleed, Exile, and Sticky Fingers. So I'll give this one a 4 because those are all 5s IMO. I think the best songs on this album are as great as any Stones album but the other songs don't hold up for me personally like the non-hits on those other albums. (Also, I missed listening to this yesterday, so I listened AFTER listening to the Mekons album, and this one makes the Mekons album seem even worse by comparison - THIS is what Brits singing country music should sound like.)
Good old fashioned rock and roll. Solid album. Starts off a bit shaky, but then Dear Doctor hits great. The rest of the album keeps going strong. Factory Girl and Salt Of The Earth close it out with a bang. Best song: Dear Doctor
Not my favorite of theirs although “Street Fighting Man” is one of my favorite Stones songs and “Factory Girl” is a highlight. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 here
this was great. id give this a 5 if i was a rolling stones fan
Enjoyable listen, I really appreciate the soul influence. They do it well, it’s so unexpected of a mid-century band of white guys from the UK.
Favorite Track: Sympathy For The Devil
73/100. Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones is a decent/good album with a strong country and roots rock influence. Honestly, it leaned more into country than I expected. The first half of the album was enjoyable, but the second half started to drag a bit. Overall, it’s a decent listen, but not among my favorites from them.
Oh the gal I'm to marry Is a bow-legged sow I've been soakin' up drink like a sponge
Very bluesy which makes sense considering the Stones were originally a blues band. “Sympathy of the Devil” was obviously my fav track. Overall very good album tho. 75/100
Unexpectedly fun
wow
please allow me to introduce myselfff fire album cover, so good had to listen through twice
I enjoyed this. This list has afforded me the opportunity to listen to an entire Stones album, something I had not done before.
Solid blues
Favourite songs: - No expectations - Parachute Women - Street Fighting Man - Salt of the Earth
Not the biggest Stones Fan but some really good tunes
I don't know too much about the Rolling Stones besides their big hits and this is not what I expected a full album by them to sound like. Much more bluesy than I assumed. I like it!
The one where the Stones found their sound
The most acoustic of the Stones albums I’ve had so far. Took me a bit by surprise on first listen, however after a couple more listens I do enjoy this, and there are some great songs on it.
This was a really fun record for me and a Rolling Stones album I had never listened to before. I loved the rock n' roll, roots, and country aspects. Some solid bass lines in some of the songs and some jammy moments. I loved the featured mellotron on some of the songs like at the end of Jig-saw Puzzle
What a smart album. I love how the just made a really awesome blues record. Its fresh, its bluesy, its folky, its dancy and country. But it's really just a good rock and roll record. Mick goes there with his vocal range, the percussion is really good and the blues guitar is exceptional.
I’m only 25 albums in but this is my second by the Stones. The first was Sticky Fingers, and although I liked this one, it suffered a bit by comparison.
Starts with one of, if not my favorite Rolling Stones song and then proceeds to bring forth strange bluesy country songs that make me question if they really are British. Starts to drag a bit in the latter half but keeps a consistent tone and might be my favorite album of theirs I have heard as of yet. 7/10
ngl i'm more of a beatles gal, mostly owing to me being exposed to their music since childhood, only hearing about rolling stones in my teens. now im trying to convince myself that both are ultimate bands, but after listening to this, it makes me wonder why they never became as popular or had a big rolling stones mania fever era. Giving it a 4/5. Good album, although there are some songs which just seem like fillers.
Super sick, definitely adding some of those to my playlist. (I should rlly be discussing the actual music and music musical terms... I am beginning to realise how limited my adjectives are... )
281/1001
Right off the bat with Sympathy for the Devil this one is full of classics. "Sympathy for the Devil" contributed to the band's image as "Left Bank heroes of the European Maoist underground", with the song's "Luciferian iconoclasm" interpreted as a political message.[31]
Definitely in their top 5 best fantastic albums, if only for the opener, SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL. Is this the best ever opening cut? By anyone? What is it that makes this song so remarkably good? Is it the lyrics? The driving, perfect bass line and the fact that they put it right up front? How about the cut's opening tabla/conga (or whatever it is) riff that runs through from start to finish? Is it the "Ooo-ooo"s? The razor sharp lead guitar? Or the piano tying everything together? So so many great songs in this album. If only MONKEY MAN were on this one; I think that would've made it perfect. Its absence and the inclusion of JIG-SAW PUZZLE are offset by the extraordinary STREET FIGHTING MAN. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 66 🎧 LPs left to review: 935 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 14 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 18 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 18
I've never been much of a Stones guy, but I liked this a lot more than I thought I would.
really good album actually! i liked three songs from it. i thought i wouldn't enjoy it, but the lyrics were really good.
hmm classic, been long for a long long year. The lyrics are cool. I remember listening to these songs on my mp3. Some of them I have not heard I think. First song is longer than I remember. Do not think I have listened to the whole thing. Didnt think Rolling stones made the song like Dear Doctor, feels country. Album was chill towards the end, I liked the Factory Girl one which was funny.
Ok
Sympathy for the Devil is such an amazing song and easily is 5+++/5. The rest of the album was pretty fantastic too.
3.5/5 It was decent. Only song that stood out was Sympathy for the Devil.
Great album. Early Stones stuff is the best.
I'm surprised how much this sounds like roots rock or country to modern ears. The two songs that everyone knows from this album, "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Street Fighting Man" are good, but kind of overshadow other interesting songs like "No Expectations" or "Jigsaw Puzzle" or "Factory Girl".
Classic album, love the stones and liked listening to one of their albums all the way through
Nostalgia
Nice tunes
This album had some early stones vibes, but also a new shift. Definitely a late 60s album. Highlights: sympathy for the devil, no expectations.
Not my favorite of the Stones but really enjoyed their country and R&B influences
Classic. 4
Not their absolute best but a solid album by the Stones. Street Fightin' Man is an all time banger! It's been played a ton on classic rock but it deserves it spot on it.
está muy bien aunque le falta punch para ser de lo mejor de los stones
Good, but not as good as some of the others.
Ok, I get it. The Rolling Stones are held at the pinnacle of esteem as blues rock legends. Alongside The Beatles, who also cohabitate the towering summit of pop music, the rest of us can hardly make a value judgement on which band is more meaningful, but just on which side of the mountain we stand. Or comparable to one's identity as a dog or a cat person. At some point I found my identity with the Beatles, but never listened to any actual Rolling Stones records. I thought the Beatles were more musically imaginative, and that the Stones were just ribald rockers. Thanks to this list I have had the chance to encounter them directly and to search my own soul. I was really drawn in with their deft musical sense, cool blues jams, and relatable human presence. Although resolutely a cat person, some dogs are fine (not mine and quiet at night).
Sympathy with the Devil and Street Fighting Man are classics. I can generally take or leave the rest - it tends towards the bluesier, countrified sound of the Stones which was never my favourite side.
This was an easy listen. Would categorize this as "porch swinging" or "weekend morning in the kitchen" type album. I liked it but listened ~3 times but there aren't any songs that I added to my liked library. My fav was definitely the first song Sympathy for the devil. The entire album made me think of the song "like a rolling stone" by Bob Dylan. Very similar vibe IMO.
Bluesy and folksy. Sounds good but not my thing.
3.5/5
Added a few songs to my liked songs playlist.
Classic Stones. Can't go wrong with Sympathy ForThe Devil. Probably the best Rolling Stones song of all time.
Nice album
Classic album. Listened to it a few times before but was nice to give it another listen after a while and listening to vastly different music. Obviously the first track is a classic but other songs such as parachute woman and stray cat blues are bangers. Definitely check this out if you’re into a mix of folk and hard rock. 8/10
Introduction to The Rolling Stones. Solid album, bit folky in an older way.
I have already heard this one many times before, that will probably be 90% of the 1001 list anyway. Not my favourite Stones album, but it is a pleasant, engaging listen. It's an accessible record and has aged quite decently. 1968 was a massive year for popular music, especially in the English-speaking world. There were many excellent albums released. I have always felt conflicted when compiling a list for this year because there are multiple "album of the year" picks.
Classic
Another Stones offering. Most of their early work will make this list, and almost all of it I’ve heard. Doesn’t make them any less worthy, but I’m here to hear what I haven’t heard. Next!
I do love me some Stones. This is the first of the “classic” albums, though the ones before it are pretty great as well. Not everything here is great, but enough is that it’s a stone Stones classic.
It's the Stones ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
well crafted album with the obvious celebrated classics! They sure know how to design a blues-rock tune or 2.
Couple classic bangers, couple that haven’t aged well, and some solid stuff in between. That’s pretty much the Stones in a nutshell
"Sympathy For The Devil" is a top 2 Rolling Stones track for me. I love how much it doesn't sound like their typical Brit classic rock sort of style, and it really captures such a unique setting with both its' sound and lyrics. It's a "never skip" track for me. For me that's the big standout song on this one, but I think it's fair to say that there aren't really any weak points and all of the songs are definitely enjoyable. The rest are more typical for them, with their blues influenced rock with great sing-along moments and a little bit of silly moments sprinkled in. It's all so enjoyable to listen to. Easy 4/5.
Yesterday I gave Rubber Souñ only 4/5, with a statement that I was more of a Stones guy. The next day I get this album. I liked it, but not nearly as much as I expected. I appreciate their more bluesy style, but few of these songs actually hit the right spot for me. Comparing the two albums, I’d have to say Rubber Soul is more solid. Still, this is a pretty decent album. It’s getting 4 stars as well, but if this system had half stars, this would be a 3.5 and Rubber Soul would’ve gotten 4.5.
these guys might be onto something
Instant win, leading off with my favorite Stones song. No Expectations flips the script but doesn't lose any momentum in the process. Dear Doctor shows their knowledge of what's going on outside of strict rock and roll. Jigsaw Puzzle is pretty classic Stones. Street Fighting Man is one of those bigger songs that has been in a few TV shows and movies, but for good reason, I guess. I'm too lazy to write through this as I work. Shit's good!
Some REALLY solid tracks on this album; Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man, and Stray Cat Blues being standouts for me. I'm less enthusiastic about the more straight-forward blues numbers and the honky-tonk on here.
Truly amazing! Had a general fondness for The Rolling Stones before, but listening to this album really cemented it. So much variety in the sound--it's almost like every track is off of a different album.
This was a surprisingly bluesy. I’ve listened to a lot of Stones albums and been dumbstruck by the fascination. With this album, I totally get it. There are some definite bangers on this album. Street Fighting Man is a great song. I also really enjoyed Prodigal Son. But to be honest, any casual listen nor ardent fan can’t go wrong with Sympathy for the Devil which is probably one of their greatest hits of all time. Overall, next time I see this album I’m probably gonna buy it on vinyl.
It’s possible The Stones understood gospel better than the blues.
great, idk about the rating but this is cool
Sympathy for the Devil is a killer tune and the rest of the album is The Stones where I like them - playing blues. Nothing revolutionary, but good listening.
Good album, all songs generally good but don’t think I’ll add to album list
4 vo mine absolute lieblings trs songs, sehr goofy in a good way
Great album, very bluesy. Excellent vocals by Jagger
Me gusto
Good stuff
I found it quite hard to review at first. An album I’ve owned but neglected for 30+ years. An album that at first seems overshadowed by the opening track. One that I’ve said is my favourite song of all time for most of my life. Chuck in the songs that Primal Scream have seemingly totally ripped off. After listening all the way through, I think this is almost a great album… but not as consistently strong as the next three! But this album is the start of one of the greatest runs of amazing songs that any band has ever created… EVER 🌟 🌟🌟🌟 (New) Highs: Keith Richards’ guitar on Parachute Woman Bill Wyman 🤯 on Jig-saw puzzle 🥰 The swagger and last 90 seconds of Stray Cat Blues 💥 Lows: The horrendous lyrics on Stray Cat Blues. Hang your head in shame Jagger! Mick Jagger’s comedic singing near the end of ‘Dear Doctor’ wtf
Excellent! From a time before they became their own tribute act, they were still pushing boundaries, sounding a bit weird and sinister and fresh while still nodding to the rush blues history that shaped them. “Sympathy for the Devil” and “No Expectations” provide possibly the greatest opening one/two album opening of all time. “Street Fighting Man”, always a little disappointing on compilation albums, sounds glorious in the context of the album. The overall sound is wonderful, organic, like you’re in the room with them. The boxy echoey sound of the drums, the ringing acoustic guitars and some of best bass lines they ever wrote. “Jigsaw Puzzle” is probably the highlight and unlike anything else in their catalog and “Salt of the Earth” is a wonderful closer. I thought I preferred “Exile…” and “Sticky Fingers” but after revisiting “Beggars Banquet” I think it might be my favourite.
I was expecting the blues and country rock influences, which I liked. A very enjoyable listen
I'm not the biggest Rolling Stones fan around. But this album I really liked!
One of the three stones album that sound basically the same but it's a good sound so who cares
Good one, although I've always thought there are no excellent albums by the stones, just good ones. nevertheless, Sympathy for. the Devil is here so...
Another good Rolling Stones album. I have yet to have one that blows me away, but they have been consistent and solid. That is what they do best from what I have heard. I also think the final songs on the albums are great. Standouts: Sympathy For The Devil, Jig Saw Puzzle, Stray Cat Blues, and Salt Of The Earth.
If you like the stones you’ve likely worn this record out. If the stones aren’t your jam then this is very “meh”
Love it. Aside altogether from the biggest hits, I love No Expectations and Dear Doctor. The whole album is great.
It's not the best but still great. A couple of classics and some dirty rhythm n blues.
Rockin'. Lots of hits, and bluesy. Will listen again.

First listen. Pretty good.
Hard to argue this isn't great.
favourite song - no expectations favourite lyric - well now, what can a poor boy do / 'cept to sing for a rock-n-roll band / 'cause in sleepy london town / there's just no place for street fighting man cover - 5/10 album overall - 4/5
Rock and blues with swagger and their own style. A well made album.
Very good great even
I challenge anyone to name a more iconic opening to an album than "Sympathy..." The rest of the album, however, will surprise many with just how basic Rhythm n Blues it is. OK, it's white boys black black man's music.... but it's done so well. And the English accents at an interesting wrinkle. Highly recommended.
Kannte und mochte ich schon vorher. Blues/Folk/Country Rock, viel Akkustik. Insgesamt ein gutes Album mit vielen super Songs, lässt am Ende aber etwas nach
Bumping this to a 4.. Mostly for the fact that you can really hear the roots of rock and roll here, with the Rolling Stones coming to form. The single from the album pulled this up to a 4. This album’s got a gritty, bluesy vibe that hits. It’s raw, simple, and kind of messy in a good way, like early Dylan or The Band. It doesn’t try too hard—just feels honest, like each track gets to just be what it is. The whole thing has this cool, old-school energy that pulls you in.
Great album. A bit more bluesy than I expected. I'll come back to give it more time in the future.
Bluesy, Rootsy Stones. Enjoyed this one but not enough to give it a 5
Already heard, but good obv.

Classic
I was a tiny bit disappointed by this to be honest. Sympathy is, of course, one of the all time great songs, and probably defines a person and a band better than nearly anything else, but the rest of it is (and this is a regular Stones complaint) a bit to honky tonky for me. I just found it a little hard to really emotionally connect to.
I enjoyed this way more than i thought i would. has a nice, earthy, very natural vibe to it. muy bueno
I liked it, don't know what you all dislike so much about it.
Decent album.
This one is a bit tonally inconsistent but rounds out that flaw with a lot of quality. What I wouldn't give for a whole album that fits with the kickoff track of Sympathy for the Devil with it's latin & African percussion-heavy rhythm approach and sideways song structure. Nonetheless the rootsy drawl of the rest of the album, exception being rock-banger Street Fighting Man, is quality in and of itself. Had they kept those 2 outliers and built an album around them, doing the same with the rest of the tracks in its own collection for more consistency, we'd have a more coherent album experience. But who tf cares it's the Stones. To love them is to embrace that their process was often chaotic, they had a hard time being objective, and had frequently combative, opposing dispositions. Trust the process and let em cook.
I’m normally not a big Stones fan. However, I enjoyed this album except for maybe a couple of songs. It had good variety and you could understand Mick well. Solid album.
enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Sympathy for the Devil & Street Fighting Man best tracks on album. overall liked the bluesy/country vibe
Don't know what it is with these older productions but they do seem to have more stereo separation than the more recent albums. The Rolling Stones were not appreciated at this time for their innovation, quality or insight but this album illustrates all these properties although it is overwhelmingly a blues-feel album before they got "harder". 'Sympathy for the Devil' is one of my favourite tracks by any group; inventive, energetic, great instrumentation and vocals with totally relevant guitar from Keith; timeless. 'no expectations' shows them in their best bluesy style with great vocals and guitar work; notice not a drum in sight, rhythm provided by backing guitar and piano (Nicky Hopkins); precursor to their 'Wild Horses' track. 'Dear Doctor' is their attempt at some kind of country blues style but I don't think it works and find this the weakest track on the album. 'Street Fighting Man' is just the "Stones"in all their glory, except it lacks a raging lead guitar solo! 'Factory Girl' is a strange one, feels like their aiming for a "folksy" Incredible String Band kind of style - I like it! Sometimes I wonder what Jagger is doing with his voice, it doesn't come across as natural at all on some tracks. Not their best album but its still great and a precursor to what is to come.
The stones with some of their blues rock finest. Love the gospel blues vibes of the closer. Some of the classics, no one’s trying too hard and all the right things are happening. Better music from a better time.
Nice country/acoustic blues on this one. Sympathy for the devil is so good it beggars belief (Banquet notwithstanding) . Love keith's stereotypical ability ot make the cliched sound vital. What's a poor boy to do? Did I hear a fiddle somewhere?
Great stripped down sound. Enjoyable throughout.
I love the bluesy/country phase of the Stones.
The bangers bang hard on this one. The backstory on this album too is clutch!
The Stones doing their take on American folk, R&B and Country? Sign me up! This album highlights everything they were dabbling in musically, and would eventually perfect into their own sound. I like a few of their other 70s masterpieces just a touch more, but this is a stone cold classic for good reason.
Never really listened to them before for some reason, like an entire album. This was really good. A little statutory, but still good tunes.
one of the best intros ever 9/10 album
Good Album
Not a bad album overall. A classic. Most of us 40+ have probably heard these songs a million times in some form.
Top tier stones. 8/10
This album is uplifted by the phenomenal 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Street Fighting Man', which are both some of the finest work by the Stones. There's a lot of excitement within these two songs, but the others kind of all sound similar and are a tad boring. They're all good, no doubt. It's just that the momentum doesn't continue.
GOOD
Decent album. I tend to not be very into the Stones, but I did enjoy this. 3.5/5
This is when the Stones really found their own, doubling down on bluesy hard rock instead of trying to play catch up with the Beatles. Some incredible work, but they get even better from here. B+
4/5
This album is admittedly kindof a bluesy one-note. But it was so enjoyable to listen to, Sympathy for the Devil is a top song of all time, tons of joy in the ending track Salt of the Earth. Tracks journey into country western and roots and r&b, but mostly bluesy throughout. I would definitely listen again and think this pushes up into the 4 range for me! 3.9/5 Listening notes: Less than 20 albums in and already getting my second Stones album! Let's see how this compares to Aftermath (1966)... The Stones know how to kick off an album with a banger.. Sympathy for the Devil. Impossible to resist. Love these bongos. and the piano! No Expectations - great bluesy track Dear Doctor - old timey, country western Parachute Woman - ok this a really bluesy album.. Jigsaw Puzzle - more blues but with strong lyrics, piano and you know I love a slide guitar. Street Fighting Man: Ok I know this one but fully did not realize the lyrics included "street fighting man" lol. Fun track, Little sitar shining through. Prodigal Son: More old timey rhythm and blues Stray Cat Blues Factory Girl - we're fully into roots music now! fiddle and all. Salt of the Earth - more rocking, got some backup soul singers
I liked this more than I expected, but less than a "classic" album.
I don’t know what to say about this album that I didn’t say about the other Stones album we were assigned before. I love this era of Stones music and this is a top tier album from this legendary band.
I wasn't expecting this album to be as blues influenced as it was, but I liked that. If they ever made a list of top 10 album opening songs, Sympathy for the Devil would be honorable mention at worst. Overall a solid album, the stones are obviously a big name in rock so not too much needs to be said about them.
Fantastic album! Short, too. I loved it.
I'm kind of shocked that this is my first Rolling Stones entry after listening to nearly 250 albums, especially given that there are 6 Stones albums in this collection. A fun selection, too, as this has some great classics/radio hits, and several I'd never heard before. I've never been a big Stones fan (or listener), but it's hard to feel too critical of them with songs like "Sympathy for the devil" or "Street fighting man". Woo woo! (And what a shame that "Jumpin' Jack Flash" wasn't included on the album.) Very sad to read about how this was the last real contribution from Brian Jones to the band he founded, and I'll say that his slide guitar in "No expectations" really makes this a surprisingly deep and enjoyable song. (And only makes the bizarre and painful falsetto in "Dear doctor" all the more mystifying.) Also very amusing that Paul McCartney basically tanked the album's release party by playing "Hey Jude" and upstaging the whole event.
Classic track 1 Enjoying it, never really listened to the rolling stones outside of their famous stuff maybe I will like more
Great stones album with a few standouts.
Two classics: Sympathy for the Devil, and Street Fighting Man. SFTD is excellent and will be enjoyed eternally. The rest of the album shows the Stones comfortably in their groove, and it's good. I still love Mick and Keef, it'll be a sad day when they put down their instruments.
the songs dont stick that much but its an enjoyable-sounding album from an enjoyable band
Stripping away the rockstar persona a bit, Mick & Company look to discover the heart of the blues. Not every experiment works perfectly, but they get a surprising amount of calmness and focus out of these tunes, especially since the lyrics don’t seem to have any connection to their actual lives. Good storytelling.
7/10
I guess there's a reason I haven't heard most of these songs. "Sympathy for the Devil" is an all-timer, though, and there are a few other good tracks on here and it finishes on a high note. I don't think of the Stones as a piano band, but I enjoyed its use here. 3.6
This had way more blues and country than I was expecting, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some great songs here and Sympathy for the Devil is just an all timer
almost gave it a five just for “sympathy for the devil” but restrained myself. 😊 favorite track: sympathy for the devil other picks: jigsaw puzzle, street fighting man, stray cat blues, salt of the earth.
I am a big big fan of The Rolling Stones. I absolutely need to listen to more of their albums
Three monster tracks (first, last, Street Fighting Man) and gradually the Stones are evening out the quality to start their peerless run of late sixties/early seventies albums.
Really enjoyed this. Rolling stones are great!
Not their best album, but this is still a really good one!
I don’t know if it’s just bias (I love 60’s British rock), but I really liked this record. Obviously I’d listened to Sympathy For the Devil a million times before, but every other track hits just as well for me. The genre mixing with the actually deep lyrics for the time give each track a sense of originality and deserving of placement on this album. I also enjoy how consistent The Rolling Stones have been, at least within this decade. If you enjoy one of their 60’s hits, chances are you’ll enjoy them all. There is the caveat, however, that they haven’t been very daring with their music, at least not as much as the Beatles were in the second half of their discography. That being said, this record still holds up pretty well and has many enjoyable tunes, whether I’m biased for them or not.
3.5
I've heard this album before, but it wasn't until this listen that I noticed the overt country influence on many of its songs. It works for them, country and the blues are siblings. Anyways, I don't think this is one of the Stones' greatest efforts, even though I find it extremely listenable. Only the two hits stand out, despite having heard this a half dozen times over the years, but the rest is pleasant in spite of its forgettability. It's probably a 3.5 for me though, and I'm willing to round up.
The Rolling Stones have such a tight sound. I had never heard this album and I dug it. Hard to give notes. Some iconic songs here, some like Street Fighting Man I've heard covers of before. I often like some of the unique instrumental work on a Stones album. Good listen. Makes sense to be on the list. I enjoyed it and could listen again.
It's crazy how much the British championed/benefited from the delta blues sound. That fact and who Mick Jagger would become distracted me a bit during my listen. 7th studio album, crazy. It opens so strong. Keith Richards killing it. I enjoy the production. I think this is a cool listen but I found my mind drifting. I give this a very nice 4 with the intention to revisit.
Favourite Song: Sympathy for the Devil
Cool.
decent album by a decent band. nothing here is outstanding but its reasonably enjoyable throughout. 7/10
Vintage Stones
Some great tunes
About a month on from getting Sticky Fingers, which I liked for some individual songs but didn't love. This, I like more. There's more blues and soul and it stayed in my rotation for a few days quite happily. Much more consistent and more memorable for me.
3.75 Classic, good car album
Think this is the best stones album I’ve listened to. Who knows maybe I just get them now.
I think one of my biggest takeaways from this project is I enjoy The Rolling Stones more than I thought I did
I enjoy blues rock whenever it comes up, and I don't think I ever gave the Stones enough listen outside of the hits. I like their loose-sounding playing while in reality having impeccable instrumentation and arrangement. Great opener in "Sympathy for the Devil". The lyrics to Stray Cat Blues certainly don't age well
Decent. Just outside that top three Stones of Exile, Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed.
Classic.
++: Sympathy for the Devil, Jig-Saw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man, Prodigal Son, Salt of the Earth +: No Expectations, Dear Doctor, Parachute Woman, Stray Cat Blues, Factory Girl 9,5/10
A great to start the day - eggs with Furikake, toast, espresso and playing "Sympathy for the Devil" playing as it grows and builds intensity. I prefer my stones as singles (my favourites like Brown Sugar, paint it Black etc) , due to my ignorance of their discography - although I keep seeing Exile on lists, not this one. Its a bit all over the place isnt it? I confess to skipping some more boring tracks, and the out of tune drunken crap, but its a goo dreminder of the harmonica playing swagger and early strong blues focus - when the tracks are good. I cant give it 5, but 4? sure... p.s. I love the lyrics, its all tongue in cheek - these guys had a great time.
Brilliant. Except for Stray Cat Blues which always made me uneasy and now is just plain wrong. (Sounds great if you don't listen to the lyrics though). Nicky Hopkins' piano across the album really shone through for me on this listen.
This is a 4 for me but there were a couple of times I almost reconsidered - a couple of tracks (Dear Doctor) should probably have been left off completely. But Sympathy..., Jigsaw..., Street Fighting Man, wow just really fantastic tracks. Really hearing The Stones experimenting and 'coming into their own' here I think.
I like the Stones, and even own one CD of them. So hearing ALL of BB for the first time was a treat of sorts. Good blues. Good rock.
this got me going over 90mph today.
The honky tonk is strong here. Like the rented a slide guitar and had to get their moneys worth.
Never expected to actually enjoy this album. Really good
Another album that I know songs from but haven’t listened to end to end. I feeling like this album showcased their rock/blues style really well and there were even some country sounding elements. I like The Rolling Stones and nothing surprised me here, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Best of The Rolling Stones, but has some overly long or overly boring stuff
Classic
