I don't mind some country but this was a bit too schlocky for me.

It may be utterly unfair to give this a low score, because the man is a legend, and must be doing something right. Maybe it is because of the age of the album and because of the influence he had on the music (I genuinely don't know, I am not a fan of C&W) - but this album almost sounds like a parody to me - an album put together of C&W cliches.

Country is not really my bag. This album was inoffensive, interesting in places - if a little bizarre e.g. the murder of a woman for an attempted theft of a pony.

Mellow mellow country. Nothing I like in there.

I don't really think that Nelson's vocal and melodies are strong enough to elevate the VERY sparsely instrumented songs on this record to something interesting. Then you finally get full orchestration on the terrible 'Down Yonder' which sounds like a parody more than anything else. While this may be a concept album dealing with a double-murder and subsequent newfound love-interest of the Red Headed Stranger, I was never truly invested in the story nor enticed by anything musically. Although the title track does have a nice melody and Willie-boy is quite good at conveying emotions (as on 'Can I Sleep in Your Arms'), this just wasn't for me.

Released in 1975; how is this Nelson’s 18th record?! While I never grow tired of listening to Nelson’s timeless vocal, the same can not be said of the instrumentation. No one plays badly, and Bobbie Nelson’s piano and Jody Payne’s mandolin are especially beautiful - the mixing of the backing vocals are spot on as well. But as everything goes on in almost the exact same tempo it all becomes rather dull in the end. I don’t get the big picture of the concept album that this should be either; but putting together an actual concept having only written under half of the songs yourself is everything but easy. The first time I feel that the band puts something on the line is during the wonderful instrumental “Bandera”. And by then it’s already time to wave goodbye for now to the Red Headed Stranger.

willie nelson - red headed stranger (1975) notes - i knew who willie nelson was but id never actually listened to his music - the first half of the album is the story of the red headed stranger split up across 5 or 6 songs - the whole album is sort of in the same vocal and guitar range, so everything kinda blends together fav - blue eyes crying in the rain - great emotional ballad with some fantastic imagery least fav - remember me when the candle lights are gleaming - cool guitar solo but the lyrics and chord progression were sort of unremarkable 2.5/5

I feel like I'm utterly lost when it comes to country music. I can't tell what makes an average album to a so-called masterpiece. And this one sounds very average to me, contrary to what many critics have said. Guess it's probably the "concept album" that *Red Headed Stranger* is that appeals to them. And maybe the barebones way it was recorded, too. The thing is, even in concept albums, individual songs should shine. And I feel like none of them do on this one. I remember giving Marty Robbins a 3/5 grade and excluding him from my own list. Yet in the realm of outlaw country music, Marty was a bit of fun at least. Maybe I was unfair, you tell me... Yes, maybe I'll even my judgment on him--because some of my final grades will certainly be different than those I gave on the spot for each album. It's another interesting thing when you're spending three years or so with this app on your phone... That being said, and compared to that Marty Robbins album in Dimery's list, *Red Headed Stranger* currently sounds dull and dreary to me. So I have no choice but to give Willie Nelson an even lower grade than that 3/5 mark I gave Robbins. At least for this particular LP... It's alright

I can see why Willie Nelson is so huge. He has a lovely voice, he has lyrics that are a cut above standard country fare, and he isn't extremely yeehaw right wing like a lot of his compatriots. Sadly, it all leaves me a bit cold. I just don't think my brain is wired to enjoy country all that much. Maybe because I'm not American, and it's not ingrained in my culture? It's just sort of sad, nicely orchestrated, I listened to it then it ended.

A fine outlaw country album. I imagined Willie Nelson sitting on a porch in a rocking chair playing guitar telling his stories when I listened to this album. It's alright but I'm still not really into country therefore my score is as it is.

Not my thing - I can admire the finger picking guitar playing and melodies emphasised by the sparse instrumentation, but I just don’t think I’m won over by Willie Nelson’s country voice.

Red Headed Stranger, en faible musique de fond quasi inaudible aiderait peut-être à passer le temps en cas de panne d’ascenseur. Quoique j’imagine pouffer de rire dans une telle situation puis rapidement devenir claustrophobe non pas d’être prise dans un endroit restreint, mais plutôt d’être forcée à entendre cet album en bruit de fond en souhaitant qu’on me porte secours rapidement. Bien que mes connaissances en musique Western soient limitées à Patrick Norman et la pièce I Am a Man Of Constant Sorrow de Dick Burnett, grandement popularisée avec l’interprétation des Soggy Bottom Boys dans le film des frères Cohen, Ô Brother, Where Art Thou?, les premières pièces de l’album de Willie Nelson m’ont parues très intéressantes malgré la grande simplicité musicale. On y goûte le sud des États-Unies et cela leur revêt une âme empreinte d’authenticité. Par la suite, les pièces deviennent rapidement de simples balades et ne présentent aucune saveur, aucune couleur puis toujours en exploitant le même dépouillement musicale ça n’aide pas à la suite qui devient très ennuyeux. Une pièce au piano de genre ragtime et deux autres pièces sans parole tentent de briser le rythme. C’est carrément un coup d’épée dans l’eau ! O’er the waves façon Western (ici ridiculement humoristique) et Bach Minuet in G, me fait penser à quelques albums à chier des années 70 quand il y a eu la mode de tout mettre en Jazz. Jean-Sébastien Bach In Jazz, Mozart and Beethoven Played in Jazz etc... qui pour ma part sont les ancêtres de la musique d’ascenseur. Alors, c’est pourquoi je qualifie l’album de Willie Nelson de musique d’ascenseur. Nb : comme je ne suis pas critique musicale professionnelle, je suis allée écouter du Patrick Normand pour cultiver mes connaissances de musique Western et avoir un comparatif. J’ai pu aussi redécouvrir avec grand agrément la bande sonore de Ô Brother, Where Art Thou?

Best Song: Down Yonder. Nice rousing piano tune. Worst Song: O'er the Waves. Mega sleepy guitar solo. Overall: Honestly, this is the third consecutive country/western album the algorithm has given me, so it has all begun to blur. This is not my genre, although of the three albums, I could see why someone might like this one.

Another country album I couldn’t really get into. Can appreciate why it would be on the list though

This was alright but never really took off. It kinda felt like every song was the intro to something else, but that something else never came along. I've enjoyed the other Willie Nelson stuff I've heard, but this was just too soft, too much of a non-event, really. Surprised to read it was so well-received (according to wiki). I don't have anything to back this up, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was part of the inspiration for Eddie Vedder's Into the Wild soundtrack. Granted, that was a bazillion times better, but I do get similar vibes. 2/5.

I enjoy the outlaw country sound, but I think the lack of the full band backing in a major way makes this one not hit well for me. Entertaining enough, but again not likely something I would listen to on my own,. 2/5

Willie Nelson soll ja ein ziemlich cooler Typ sein, nach all dem, was man so über ihn hört und liest. Was man allerdings auf diesem Album von ihm hört, ist genauso öde und langweilig, wie der ganze andere County-Schrott. Nicht ganz so scheiße wie das unsägliche Album von Waylon Jennings aus dieser Liste, aber auch gerade so 2 Sterne. Eher so 1,85 Sterne.

iiii already knew i didnt really care for country, this p much seals it in. every track sounds identical to me here and its not helped by the short average length with every track basically having the exact same amount of pause between them as a regular verse, giving this weird feeling of everything being this one incredibly long track, much like this sentence. anyway yeah sorry this is just kinda very unnotable and nothing to me

Red heads are called gingers in the UK. I like a ginger biscuit to dunk in my coffee. I find that they have the consistency to absorb quite a bit of coffee before they are likely to turn soft and drop back into your coffee cup. A five second dunk I find is the ideal time. 1/5 16/7/26

El estilo es demasiado minimalista para mi gusto y, aunque sé que tiene valor dentro de su contexto, no encontré nada que realmente me atrapara o me hiciera querer volver. Awful in so many ways. Here’s four: his awful voice, idiotic lyrics, ridiculous theme, and the melting of jazz guitar and country.

I just don't see the appeal here. Every song, musically, and lyrically, just bleeds right on into the next one over and over again. And it's not good music, either. It's incredibly simple, repetitive chords under "oh no I'm sad, let's go murder the woman who made me sad, oh no I'm still sad"

Couldn't finish it, it's just the same low tempo dull as dishwater western waltz all the way through, honestly couldn't tell where one song ended and the next one started

Maybe as a British millennial I'm just not qualified to comment on this sort of music, and I know country is not exactly renowned for it's experimentation but...this is so unbelievably dull, it's just the same fucking thing. Over and over. Songs (or the one song which is repeated as nauseum) is not bad, but it gets the lowest possible rating just for how lacking it is in scope, ambition, dynamics.

That’s two Willie albums we’ve had now and they’ve both bored me utterly shitless. I just can’t fathom what is remotely interesting about this plodding twee nothingness. Given we had Dolly Parton the day before the difference is stark. Which is a revelation, given I had zero opinion on the difference in country genres before doing this list. Just cheer up Willie, you’re a bloody misery, at least Dolly’s melancholy is upbeat!

Holy shit every song sounds the same. The instrumentals are sparse and there’s not enough in Nelson’s lyrics or delivery to keep it interesting. Down yonder is the only song that grabs you. There are a few moments here and there, like Bandera but overall a boring listen.

It's hard to imagine Willie Nelson as a young man in any way. He's been an old stoner for as long as I can remember, and while he is associated with music he has been represented more as an icon of past years than a relevant musician during my life. While I'm not upset to hear an old Willie Nelson album there's really nothing here for me. It's a handful of very short, relatively slow blues country songs, none of which stay with me after a listen. I imagine I could listen any of the many albums in his collection and lump them together as skippable. I don't identify with this genre in any way so overall its just a skip from me. 1.3 stars

I’ve never been a fan of Willie Nelson, and Red Headed Stranger didn’t change that for me. While I can appreciate its place in music history, I found the album quite slow and unengaging. It just didn’t hold my attention, and I won’t be revisiting it.

1/5 - The first 2/3's is so slow. W/ the last four tracks being slightly worse than mediocre, but a very welcome change of pace for someone that has listened to the whole album in one sitting. I don't know, I typically have really enjoyed every Willie song I've come across in my life, but this album does not do it at all for me. The only bit i enjoyed was the first 45 seconds of "Time of the Preacher" - which is the first 45 seconds of the album. It starts slow, melancholy and daunting, but never goes anywhere from there. Aside from "Can I Sleep in Your Arms" - it seems Willie forgot he was an incredibly talented musician on this one.
