Often feeling like David Bowie light due to the singing style there was only one thought I had during listening: Ece will not enjoy this 😆
A better TH album IMO. Some if Harrison's guitar work reminds me of Adrian Belew, which is interesting as the were touring together in 2024.
Good album! Talking Heads have always been decent.
Great songs. A little bit repetitive.
George of the jungle vibes in places. Lots of beep beep boop boops. Kind of enjoying it.
Kind of repetitive sound wise
Stand outs: - Life During Wartime - Heaven I like the funky guitar riffs and beats but it's not an album that grabbed me on first listen.
Pretty fine album, sounded like the Talking Heads but I really didn't hear any standout songs.
While still weird, it doesn't feel as experimental as some of their other offerings.
Started stronger than it finished but I enjoyed it more than I expected!
Enjoyable. Admittedly I was working on other things while listening so it did not have my full attention but it was solidly mid range.
My second Talking Heads in a row! That's not a bad thing, I guess. They were building their canon here by adding all-time classics "Life During Wartime" and "Heaven." And they had definitely discovered their signature sound in this second collaboration with producer Brian Eno.
another 3 but worse than bad but above divine comedy. this was ok i liked when it was funky.
One of the all time unique bands. I didnt love this one but I think it shows bits and pieces of their best work they just didnt have it yet. That sort of psychedelic sound is there but the rest didnt feel quite as great.
I like this band but i can't connect with their soul.
Highlights: I Zimbra, Life During Wartime
Arty, nerdy, white disco-funk-New Wave goodness from the Talking Heads and Brian Eno! Not my favorite album by them, but Life During Wartime is a great song. 3.5⭐️
energetic. Tbh, i actually heard only the first track
Whatever
I have to accept that Talking Heads just isn't my thing. It was still a fun time
Really weird that they chose this Talking Heads album. It’s like the creator of this list wanted to be a lil hipster and intentionally not choose the greatest hits.
It had a nice groove.
Quite an unusual album, it's really creative and finds a way to be different, but still musical and interesting. The album is a blend of different styles and a transitional one for the band, since they started moving from a more traditional punkish new-wave, to funk/art/talking heads type of sound. One of the things I liked about this album, as with their previous release, is the unusual guitar rhythms and melodies, you are never sure what's coming next, which is true for other instruments as well. The bass lines are also quite interesting throughout the album. The songs are fun to listen to, and the themes are engaging, but they just weren't that special to me. The bands trademark sound is here, but for me there is a lack of bigger singles/hits, although, most of the songs are memorable and have nice themes and sounds. Was between a 3 and a 4. Giving it a 3 in the end because the album just wasn't that special for me.
Good.
I swear this sounds like a Modest Mouse album from the 2000s. It's... Fine.
I'm a big fan of Talking Heads. Like some of my previous albums I've been given, I know a hand-full of some of their biggest hits but this is the first time I've taken a deep dive into one of their records. I'm much more familiar with their material on "Remain in Light" and "Speaking in Tongues". Some of the standout tracks for me are "Life During Wartime", "Paper", "Animals", and "Electric Guitar". I started off by listening to the original 1979 edition on Spotify but wasn't super enamored with the sound. I felt like the production of the original version was a little muffled and neutered sounding. With that in mind, this website links to the Deluxe Edition which was remastered in 2005 and I decided to give that version a listen to see if I liked the record any better. I do think the remastered 2005 version lends to a better listening experience. I found all of the same tracks enjoyable with the addition of "Drugs" which has an extremely foreboding sound that I enjoyed - definitely reminded me of having a bad trip. My overall verdict: enjoyable because of how much I enjoy the band but I have a feeling I would like their later releases a lot more.
Talking Heads typical go down well with music critics, but so far I've been fairly split on their songs. This album exemplified this by having a great first half and then an uninspiring, boring second half.
Pretty good.

I’d say it beat expectations cause I was worried about liking their singing style. Which it isn’t my favorite but it didn’t ruin the album for me. I didn’t really love any of the music itself though. And all the repetition in the lyrics made that also generally uninteresting for me. I think after more listens I could better appreciate it but at this moment in time after the first listen I don’t feel it.
Strange fun as always from the Talking Heads. Thrilled to play back Stop Making Sense.
Obviously, this is good...but listening to this made me wonder if I like Talking Heads as a concept vs. the music they're making. This didn't stay with me and didn't feel the need to replay any songs either.
Kinda fun but not really my bag
so, normally i really really dislike Talking Heads. even their major hits I tend to give a pass. I just don't love the lead singers voice and their music seems frantic to me. that being said, I did actually listen through this twice, really enjoying Cities and enjoyed their demo tapes. Not sure if I would go back to it, but this album I'll give a solid 3. it was enjoyable, and I am glad I listened to it... but probably won't go back
Talking Heads tick a lot of boxes for the kinds of sounds I enjoy, and in theory I *should* love them, but I don't. No hate either, they're just alright.
I've always been really 50/50 on these guys, some of this album is super interesting and some of it is completely nonsensical. Weirdly really enjoyed the "Dancing for Money" demo
3 - Not my talking heads classic, some interesting stuff and cool musical commentary
I like the Talking Heads quite a bit but this album did not do it for me.
Weird. Not really my cup of tea, but can appreciate it for what it is. Really like the music on Drugs. 2.5/5
3.5
I lost some interest on the second half of this album. If I was comparing this to the rest of a talking Heads portfolio this album is kinda disappointing. Not bad, just was missing something.
Whenever I've seen this album's title, I've always imagined that it was not only a Talking Heads classic, but also that it has the vast majority of their best-known songs. I can see why it's a classic, but I'm very surprised that there are almost *no* radio classics on the album. (I can see that "I Zimbra", "Cities" and "Life during wartime" were all singles from the album, but the latter track is the only one that endured on radio playlists, although it definitely makes up for the remainder's obscurity.) Listening to this album nearly 50 years after it was released, it's interesting to hear how quintessentially Talking Heads this is, yet each track is also surprisingly *un*-distinctive (except "Memories can't wait", which feels a lot more like David Byrne's solo work years later)--it's like they created a mold for what a Talking Heads album would sound like, and then left it to past and future albums to create the hits they'd be known for long after they disbanded. Distinctiveness or lack thereof aside, my favorites on the album are probably "Life during wartime", "Heaven", and "Animals". It's interesting to read that Brian Eno (who is everywhere) helped produce this album, as I suspect this album was the reason he was so reluctant to help produce their next album, yet there's no real discussion of whatever scarred either him or the band to working with him (or maybe he was just tired of producing their albums?).
Weird og bra, digger talking heads
6/10
Not even that scary. Yet another case of false advertising from Byrne & Co.
I do like Talking Heads, and I enjoyed the album … but I really don’t remember anything about it.
I like Talking Heads but I thought this was good and not great. Life During Wartime was the only track that really stood out but maybe that's just because I already knew it.
Fav song: Air Talking Heads were ahead of their time. So fun and interesting but a few tunes lost in the sauce on this one. Can’t believe this was pre-80’s. Madness.
Weird in a good way, not my favourite album of theirs, but Life During Wartime is a bop, and Paper.. very nice
Most of this was pretty good. I didn't love the song "Animals," it was kind of screechy to me. Most of it was fun, it was very energetic but just didn't really seem like it had much depth to it.
I really like The Heads, but not familiar with this album.
I don't know why but even I like it and there is a few of good songs I don't think I be back to that one
Definitely wish I was high when I listened to this album. Hits and misses but overall enjoyable.
liked this - ol Byrne but with funky backing tracks
Not the best Talking Heads album but still better than most.
great band - not my favorite album but I enjoyed it. I love David Byrne for myriad reasons (his Brazilian exploring in the late 80s, his painting, solo work, used to come to my gym where I taught in nyc..coolest guy. i think he is true to his art/music and that shld be rewarded, even if I didn't love this album - some is great but the rest eh? Also Tina Weymoth and her hubby - Stood next to Blondie !?!?!!? at the 'World' theater back in 1990 watching the Tom Tom club love them too!
I think this is best consumed in a multi-media environment, where you can see, hear, and gleam the nuances of the whole experience: fun lyrics, iconic sound, and a lot of avant-garde whimsey.
Fun album
I’ve never really appreciated the Talking Heads, and this album did not change that.
To me, Talking Heads is a band that makes accessible, decently fun, and very well produced music that, for some reason, has almost no charm to it. It's like pop but slightly better, excerpt slightly better is not enough for me to be a fan, because I don't like pop. Yeah, their music just doesn't impress me in any way. Their next album, Remain In Light, is slightly better, in my opinion, but I also couldn't find anything to praise it for. Good music, but nothing remarkable. 7/10
Not bad but not super memorable?
Not my cup of tea.
Now here is a weird band. To me their music is simplistic, minimalistic to the extreme. But sometimes less is more, and when they get it right, boy do they get it right. I have their greatest hits album, but that is the only album of theirs that I have heard, unless there was one on here earlier that I've forgotten about. Life during wartime is the only track I recognised, but the others were OK. Really not sure whether I'd buy any album by them other than greatest hits, but on the whole this one was ok. A solid high 3 from me.
Talking Heads are a bit like Marmite, sometimes they hit the spot, and sometimes it's just brown sludge. This was definitely the former I've never listened to this before, and it's well worth another spin. There was a lot going on, so I was unable to appreciate the subtleties, another few plays and it might get a higher score.
Not the album I would have chosen - good but not their best
When they're good, they're great. When they're not good, they sound like a weird novelty act.
I like talking heads but this isn’t the best version of them.
I like the first few tracks enough, but the whole album feels a bit samey in sound and vibe. I Zimbra is a cool start to an album, and I liked the different feel Drugs provided. Their default sound reminds me of Bowie. Like 'Fame' (1975), 'Let's Dance'. I think this is just cool 70s music.
A classic! Still, prefer their biggest hit.
It’s ok i guess
Upbeat. enjoyable. Don't know if it will b on I come back to but good none the less. 3-3.5
Not bad.
I didn't know this album well at all. Obviously Life During Wartime was the big hit from it that always makes Greatest Hits collections and I knew the other singles. It seems to me that it's front-loaded for those singles with a longer, less interesting tail. It's not bad exactly but the evidence is clear: reviewers loved it, record buyers didn't.
listened to again definitely oddball, somewhat interesting, not enough for me
Buena segunda mitad
Talking Heads continue to be my favourite discovery of this project Obviously I knew their singles before but I had no idea how much I’d enjoy all of their work This wasn’t quite as good as some of their other albums on this list but was still pretty great
Talking heads is atmospheric but this album didn't quite have the highlights of some of their better singles.
Sounds similar to franz ferninand.
not my style i don’t think
Kul sound! Beste sanger: Air, Heaven
Not my cup of tea
I liked the beginning of this album a lot. If all the songs were like "I Zimbra" this would be a 5/5 album. I think the first half of this album was strong, but then the ending was weak. Also the "alternate version" of "Mind" was better than the regular version. Solid 3.5 album. Liked Songs: "I Zimbra" , "Paper" , "Cities" , "Life During Wartime" , "Heaven"
Meh. Best track 'Life during wartime' but even then, there's a much better version on 'Stop Making Sense'.
Love the band. Good album. Not my top.
Was fine, didn't wow me.
1979. 7/10. New Wave. Post-punk. psychedelic funk Heaven Mind Memories cant wait
Second song is more appealing than the first. Not my typical sort of album to listen to. But not far from what I'd listen to. "Paper" sounds a lot better.
Didn’t enjoy this one as much as some of their other work
I liked this better than the last Talking Heads album, but I just don’t love them (sorry, Dad!)
I think this band is just ok
Not bad. I like the song about air being scary. These guys must write there music from fever dreams lol. It's definitely creative, I would lump them together with Beck. Creative, but strange. 6/10
Lot of Talking Heads in this list
It was okay. I enjoyed some of the other Talking Heads albums more
Pretty good, low 3.
Just blues into one jangly mash up but quite enjoyed it
Dark aber au melancholisch-hoffnigsvoll. Het aber au iwie ghitted und 1-2 banger. 3.5
For me the lyrics mostly don't land, but there are Infectious grooves even if it is not my favorite Talking Heads record. Favorites: "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air" and "Drugs" For my money the best version of "Memories Can't Wait" is the cover by Living Colour. I remain convinced that those of us experiencing the list would all be better served if they dropped any one of the Talking Heads albums on the list for the inclusion of STOP MAKING SENSE instead.
I've never been huge into Talking Heads. This album sounds pretty alike to their other releases. Not bad but probably won't come back to it after this list. I appreciate some of the funkier bits. 3/5
Quite mediocre. Their debut was more engaging.
Was okay. Some good basslines but dragged on a bit after track 5 or 6
That's not my taste in music
I kind of like Paper, Cities, Life During Wartime
David Byrne and the Talking Heads are special in this industry, and I greatly respect them. Usually unconventional, sometimes even bizarre, and always surprising. The simple disco beat, that many of the tracks use, often contradicts with the intricate layers of unusual sounds the band puts over it. Byrne's lyrics and vocal presentation give the songs then a different spin. All in all weird in a positive way, but nothing I would listen to regularly.
I am already positively biased toward the Talking Heads, as they are one of my babyhood bands. Listening to this album, though, I find that I prefer the live versions of "Life During Wartime," "Heaven," and "Cities" off of Stop Making Sense. This is a solid Talking Heads album, but definitely not my favorite.
6/11/24 Average at best.
Not my favorite TH albums
It's good. I don't love the whole album but Heaven and Life During Wartime are amazing! I also like Drugs. "A place where nothing, Nothing ever happens"
Meh…it was ok.
Danceable and upbeat rhythms and creative melodies make this listenable. Who ever told this guy he could sing I’ll never understand. The instrumentals saved it.
Im a big talking head fan in general. This album was good but had a lot of songs that felt unfocused. The hits were definitely hits. Overall- enjoyable
Is this the only talking heads album without a song that I’ve heard before 😭
It reminded me a little of David Bowie. Interesting and creative, but I couldn’t really get into it.
This one has some of my favorite talking heads songs. Heaven…Heaven is a banger. Overall a little too raw and weird though for me to bump consistently
Put some respect on the best Talking Heads album!!!!
Some fun songs. Some boring and repetitive songs. Overall nothing about this album really grabbed my attention.
Bot as fun as their first album, this one was a little more experimental. Bit bad at all, just not for me.
202/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
Not bad
I Zimbra was good. The rest I could leave
Not yet so super great as the following work but still impressive to be so far ahead of their own time.
Clever but I’ve never really connected with TH’s….
This album doesn't really have any pop hits and it does all blend together a bit for me but I like the chunky low end and gradual progressions. I could see this getting better with repeated listens. Highlights: Memories Can't Wait, Heaven.
Is this their best album? I'm not sure. Anyway, it's ok.
Good album. Talking heads are usually a hit for me.
OK for once
Not my favourite Talking Heads album
Fairly typical Talking Heads album. Some good songs, some experimental stuff from Bryne. Overall good.
This was better than I expected. This 'era' of rock is not my favourite in a lot of ways. This one was pretty good though!
Somehow I don't get on with Talking Heads anymore. This album didn't inspire me either. I didn't listen to it in its entirety. The voice reminded me of my favorite piece of the band, Psycho Killer. I quite liked the track Life During Wartime. But that didn't persuade me to listen to the rest. 3/5
It was fun, better suited for the car or loud speaker on a sunny day
Another solid Talking Heads album I hadn't heard. I swear at 1:30 into Drugs it sounds like Homer saying "doh" but its obviously not.
I like the melodic version of Talking Heads far better than spooky / weird Talking Heads (Heaven > Animals, for example). This album has some real bangers, but it is too far toward the weird pole of the Talking Heads spectrum for me to love this.
I actually have the album. It's not my favorite record but Memories can Wait is one of my favorite songs
I enjoyed this a bit
Far from the best Talking Heads album but a couple cool moments, Cities, Lifetime During Wartime, Heaven
Don’t see the need for this with all the other Talking Heads on the list but it’s fine.
This was pretty interesting and psych. Not my favorite Talking Heads record. I hadn't ever listened to it and I'm not sure I will go out of my way to listen to it in the future. I definitely heard some things that likely inspired LCD Soundsystem though.
Such a sweet record! I love how groovy and odd this album is. In some ways, it almost feels *disjointed* like something is off, but whatever it is that is *off* is the magic that pulls it all together. Is it the bopping bass lines or the sharp synths? Maybe its just David Byrne's vocals and odd lyrics. But its different than say, Frank Zappa, who also had kind of an odd style of lyrics and vocals. The Talking Heads doesn't feel like a novelty act. Its fun, but its also feels real. I think I liked the run from Heaven through Drugs the best on the album. I feel like its where it really takes off and has more variety.
Pretty crazy for 1979, probably not their best work
Didn't love this one! I think it's a bit too grimy and repetitive without doing much exciting. Still got some highlights but I won't revisit it on it's own. 3/3.5
# 316 : Good album, its ok. I am not a Talking Heads afishionado, but it's Full of catchy bops and I could go back to this. it's a bit samey and nothing spectacular, as in it seems like all the other Talking Albums I've heard so far. Favourite track : Cities
Whole lotta noise but not terrible
An enjoyable album, although some of the songs definitely took up too much track time and we were waiting for them to be over. Cities' 4 minutes may not sound like much but, for this song, it should have been 2. We started off enjoying it and were over it by the end.
I listened to this a few days ago and can't remember a single thing about the album. I couldn't have told you which songs I liked or disliked—classic three-star album review for me.
- first one today 30.08 6.5/10
The Talking Heads are cool. I'm a little disappointed in myself that I didn't realize "Cities" was originally their tune. I used to listen to Phish's version of it all the time back when I was working at Sam Goody (remember those?). It always had some TH vibes - now I know why.
Decent album, but I am not nearly as taken with this as I am with Remain in Light. 3/5
fun one
A couple of good gems on here but not my favorite Talking Heads album. 3 I would think.
There's some really good music on Fear Of Music, but the odder tracks didn't always land for me. Overall, it's a 2 star album that gets an added star for the proto-Discipline-era King Crimson opening track (I Zimbra).
not bad. didnt click with me first time round. ill come back for another though.
a perfectly fine album, but nothing i’d revisit in full
Some good stuff but it all felt samey.
Always liked talking heads
Not too bad
Quirky and fun
Bueno
Fourth Talking Heads album from this list and I still think they're just another mid new wave who just happened to be overhyped. Still, "Fear of Music" is the most interesting one I've heard so far. The tunes have a character and carry that beloved new-wave energy. The vocals are still annoying but at least it's not as spotlighted as it was in their other albums. I would say this is my favorite from them, I guess.
Didn't find too many bangers on this album. Didn't mind listening to it, but hoping to find some better albums from them on this list.
I think this is my third album by the Talking Heads and I've accepted the just aren't for me. The band is great but the vocals just don't do enough for me.
I appreciate people who try different things, and this was certainly that. I didn’t enjoy most of it, but I could appreciate it.
Hmm, this one was not as goood as their last, the fear is real
Funky, relaxing. Didn’t challenge me, not a fan of the singers voice.
Geez, the first four Talking Heads albums all make the list? Are they all remarkable or that different from each other? I feel like this one and Remain in Light both started to explore different more worldly beats so maybe only one deserves to be on the list. Nevertheless, I will say something that I noted on their first album - Tina Weymouth's bass lines kick serious ass. So good on the opener I Zimbra. And Life During Wartime - what a perfect example of TH's (and in particular David Byrne's) eccentricity and skill in lyrics and musicianship. New wave at its finest - put that song on repeat for hours on end. Still, this album is up and down and side two drags a bit, both of which I've said about all their albums, but even moreso than their debut or their fourth album. These guys are an important band in the whole New Wave genre but this album is a bit inconsistent in my opinion.
You can hear Eno's influence all over this one, which works sometimes and doesn't at others. Drugs is a particularly bad way to end the album.
Talking Heads are just always fun. This one isn't their best - it's a little light on hits - but I enjoyed listening to it and would put it on again. "Life During Wartime" is the highlight, that's a great song. But anything that's primarily rhythm- and groove-based is good music to have on in the background, and this fits the bill.
Decent, but not my favorite Talking Heads album
Kinda funky Kinda psychy Upbeat sounding Got bored
Typical TH Music…6/10
Only up to 168 and already 4 Talking Heads albums. Do I really need to hear all of their stuff before I die.
Cool, a bit repetitive
Where does this fit in genre wise? I can't really decide. That's part of the charm. No skips on here. Favourite: Heaven.
Started off pretty good with I Zimbra it definitely hooked me from the start. The very interesting instrumentation really drew me but when the singer started getting a bit too wacky I was just kind of caught off guard and a bit confused. As I understand that seems to his whole shtick but it's not something I'm really a big fan of. Nevertheless the album as a whole was decent. The last three to end it the album off were a bit disappointing and it just felt like I got edged for nothing. I'd say I enjoyed experience more than the music itself. Best - I Zimbra, Life During Wartime, and Heaven Worst - Animals and Electric Guitar 2.75-3.0/5
Surprised this album was chosen. Like the Talking Heads, but this album isn't their best.
Talking Heads are legends - but regarding Musical diversity …
good album, a little bit weird at times
It was not bad, musically, but I am not a huge fan of nonsense and weirdness, and I can't think of any songs I'd be dying to hear again.
Two Talking Heads records in the same week. They are a wonky band but their music is fine. This record was not as cheesy as the other one, and had a more polished feel to it. Might go back and listen to this one again.
Good songs, nothing too good
was alil hectic was cool but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again
okay
I'm not a huge fan. Don't really understand the hype. It was a little weird but not enough to feel groundbreaking or new. I'm not a fan of Byrnes singing voice across the board, it works on some songs like Psycho Killer very well but on others it feels out of place. I think the instrumentation across this album is great and as a textural album, it is evocative and powerful. I think it has a growing quality. I think it's somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me. I think Heaven is a highlight. Life during Wartime is a perfect litmus test for if someone is into the talking heads. It has the punk sensibilities and its danceable, I just don't love it and that's fine.
Yeah I can’t get it. The vocals don’t excite me.
Rather ethereal and funky, and I think that's what I enjoyed the most about it. Unfortunately, that's where my enjoyment ends. The first half was much better than the second, as the latter is lacking pretty much in the everywhere department.
man idk what it is but i just can't get behind the talking heads! i can acknowledge that their music is good but i just don't enjoy it. i see the appeal though. there were a couple songs i did enjoy though, like air, i zimbra, and mind. idk this is an album that either hits or doesn't depending on my mood. anyways, overall it's again a 3 stars.
Fear of Music is the third studio album by Talking Heads, originally released in 1979. I am admittedly more familiar with their more well-known album "Remain In Light" that would come out the following year. This one was a bit more experimental to my ears surprisingly. It's got a "darker" overall feel than their other efforts. They make great use of more odd time signatures which was pretty cool. They're also able to keep that funky undertone to many of the instrumentals, even though you can hear the disco influence creeping in by this time. One of my favorite parts of this record were the bass lines, super funky and tasteful. Even though this is not my favorite of theirs, it was still groovy.
Not as catchy as their next album but still good to listen to.
Not a terrible album.
If Roger Waters and David Bowie had a child together, it would be David Byrne. There are a number of extremely good tracks here, but the drugs produced just a little too much filler for this day and age.
Like most people I'm familiar with remain in light so will be good to try a different album of theirs. Yeah it's basically the same, lopping guitars and drums with David byrne talking cod philosophy over the top lol. Still enjoyed it!
A couple of good/great songs, you can see hints if greatness to come, but overall closer to 2 than to 4.
The Talking Heads are a bit of me, but this felt a little lackluster. No single song really stood out to me - whilst I enjoyed listening to it as a whole I don't think I could recommend any one song to someone from it.
I Zimbra is a great start. Funny how it was so unique in '79. Cities, Life during Wartime. So is the list of the best albums or the most important? I guess the uniqueness qualifies it. 3 great songs out of 11. Brian Eno produced. I was doing construction in a loft building on Lafyette in SoHo, NYC in 1980. I get in the elevator and these two guys are fawning over this guy wearing Elton John glasses. "Oh. Mr. Eno we love your music,..." When my floor arrives, I turn to him and say, "Hey Eno how about some elevator music." The two fawners faces drop. He turns to me, smiles and says, "It's been done." I laugh and exit. 3*
Vier. 4. VIER!!! What. The. Fuck.
The instrumental backing is funky and the band are very tight plus the production is crisp and lively. Not that keen on the vocals though.
This album made me think that I like the idea of Talking Heads more than I actually like Talking Head.
Enjoyable quirkyness from the american arthouse masters! I thinkbone album would do it.
I'm not sure what they were trying to achieve with this one really. I like The Talking Heads, and liked some of these songs, but at times it just seemed a bit rambling.
I don't think one listen of this album is enough to do it justice. It'd probably be more endearing after several listens, (which given my current 1001 backlog is doubtful).
As good as any other Talking Heads album. I appreciate the honesty and the creativity. I'm just never moved by the music. That said, I've dropped Heaven into a playlist.
I feel as though I'm familiar with all the tools that the Talking Heads use to construct all of the music. For example I can hear the rock and disco influences that they have. The singer's voice gets on the border of what is annoying and what is stylistically fine. Overall, I find the album fine.
Good 80’s band. Lots of original songs.
It was alright
Classic Talking Heads sound. On the whole, it's not really my thing, but it's also not that bad either. I could listen to it again.
Yeah it's alright.
Not my thing. Sounds alright but I didn’t enjoy the vocals a lot. Every song seemed to be trying too much. Interesting listen, was considering a 2
Definitely some nice moments, especially in the alternate versions, but overall didn’t do it for me. I really don’t dig shouty rock. Also, lame album cover. I’m gonna go listen to And Justice For All… the tight back of Sara’s car has me raging. Lol. 6/10
5/10 - I feel like talking heads are experimental in a way that I am not a huge fan of. Some of their songs I enjoy quite a bit but most of these were not my favorite. I Zimbra was great and Heaven was pretty good but the rest were not for me.
Some super interesting beats. Sometimes got a little annoying
Ish
I like the darker and strange tone to this album more than the prior Talking Heads album. I don't know that I had a stand out song on this one outside of the intro. As per usual, if you like the Talking Heads, you are probably in, if not, then you likely don't like it at all.
Turns out all you need to make Talking Heads my cup of tea is a bit of King Crimson in the mix. All jokes aside, I feel like they're a band were I have mixed feelings about they're sound. However, for me it comes down to me enjoying the songs on here a bit more than the two previous albums.
It's really challenging for me to rate this. On the one hand, Talking Heads has such a unique range and a rather avant garde style. It's like nothing else you've ever heard, but it's not art rock, it's not punk, and David Byrn's voice is just so unique. They are wholly themselves and totally embracing their sound. But at the same time it's never really been for me. Maybe they've just never reached me at the right time or place, but I've never really vibed with Talking Heads. And that's ok, it's not for everyone, and that's a risk with embracing your own style. They absolutely deserve to be on this list though and I'm glad I listened through.
I like the Talking Heads more the older I get. But this one was not my favorite. Still good, but didn't love it.
sunka sir
Ok, nis spektakularno
I like the Talking Heads a lot but this album was really boring and one dimensional.
First time i heard it. Interesting
3/5 like it 👍
Idk why the smiling friends didn't liked it, I really enjoyed it, pero tampoco me encantó, sabes? Le daré un 6/10.
6 / 10 Glam Pop Rock poco interesante
Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. The first half is great, very catchy melodies and memorable songwriting. There is a weird element that the band does so well but it sounds mostly fantastic and their combination of styles works so well. The second half is when the album really falls off for me. The quirkiness of the band becomes overwhelming to a point where the sounds stop sounding musical and become a nuisance to listen to. There are still a lot of good ideas on the second half but overall not something I would want to revisit. Favorite songs: I Zimbra, Mind, Paper, Cities, Life During Wartime, Heaven. Worst songs: Animals, Electric Guitar, Drugs.
Quite interesting but not sure when I’d ever listen to this.
Some decent tracks on here
More of a 3.5 i like the music and the beats but it’s not my style.
Odd but fun album
Cities is one of my favorites. A few other great songs on this album.
need half stars. good album 2 and a half stars
The music of Talking Heads has a way of making me nervous. It's anxiety-inducing, and I'm not sure why.
I didn't hate this, but I didn't like it either. I like Talking Heads' lighter stuff, this was just too heavy for me.
Positive surprises!
ok...wow. i zimbra was good actually this is nice. "mind" is....actually kinda funny lol. why he kinda sound like king julian sometimes tho,, and now he sounds like ace ventura lmao? he kinda lost me at memories can wait..but i liked the lyrics .. :( air is interesting pretty good overall! 3.8-4.4
This is my fourth and final Talking Heads album to review. I've really enjoyed their albums so far (5 stars for More Songs, and 4 stars for Remain and '77), so I had high hopes going into this album. Overall, this album was my least favorite of the Talking Heads albums that I've listened to. It's a good album, but it just lacks the punch that their other albums had. The originality, manic vocals, and odd guitar sounds are all here, but this album can be a bit of a chore at times to get through. "I Zimbra" starts the album off on a strong note, but from there it just kind of plods along until "Life During Wartime" and "Memories Can't Wait." This album wasn't really up my alley, but as much as I love Talking Heads, I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting it some day to see if my initial reaction was wrong.
Couple good funky songs, but the production feels so thin. No bass frequencies to speak of. Drums too loud, and always playing the same beat in every song.
Still early stage for Byrne & Co, searching for their style. Nice bass lines
This was the first time for me to really listen to Talking Heads. They do some cool stuff, but I don't love the singing on the record. Unconventional. Worth at least one listen.
Animals is so weird but I love it! Dancing for money is even weirder…still good though.
Very Talking Heads - you have discordant melodies, call and response guitar elements each bar during the verse, odd sounds, social issue lyricism - a great representation of a super influential band.
not a fan of singing here
Album is great to put on in the background. The singer sounds like Robin Williams on a few songs.
Did not finish. Not great.
A middling Talking Heads' album is better than lots of other bands' best. But if you're going to include this, you may as well include their entire catalog. I don't believe this album belongs on the list. Did y'all catch the tune Living Colour covered?
I was excited for this one seeing as this project has turned me into a TH fan, but I was a bit disappointed. It's OK, but it's lacking that certain something that the predecessor and follow-up had. I do like how free they were to explore some crazy sounds and beats. But it didn't grab me like some of the others.
not my kind of music
Liked some songs. It was ok. Heaven was my fav.
Not my favourite talking heads album, missing that more intense aspects rather the more dreamy a d abstract aspect this is 6/10
The arrangements are interesting. The recording is of high quality. The manner of performance is unusual. But the vocal pisses me off)
I remember listening to burning down the house, this was OK 3 stars
Pretty good stuff that I have not heard. Familiar with their later work, this is similar but different. I probably wouldn't buy this album but I would listen to it again for ambient music.
Upbeat but repetitive
Very frog coded album, no I will not elaborate
This process showed me a love of Talking Heads, but I don't think this album was their best on first impression. Seemed a bit less varied than others and that lead to some boredom. Maybe repeat plays with uncover it's depth so I'll be back
More like the singing heads. Got 'em.
Just like “More Songs about Buildings and Food,” I liked the album well enough, but if I was in the mood for the Talking Heads, I would pull out “Remain in Light,” of “Stop Making Sense.”
enjoyed this so much I listened to it twice back to back and will listen again
Liked this better than the prior Talking Heads album I had. It's a little more accessible. I still find myself wanting to like them more than I do. It's still a little bit of a tough listen at times.
delightfully quirky and upbeat, as any talking heads album should be. a fun listen. highlights: “mind”, “life during wartime”, “heaven”
I know talking heads, but only know two songs psycho killer and new feeling. 4 last songs aren't available on Spotify in here. Kind of a weird look the cover has. It's not rock, but punk and new wave so ik what to expect kind of. First song, old vibes, not English, never had that experience here. It's fun I like the energy, it's europopy. Smn said what if this song was their karaoke song and another one had this fully memorized by listening to it too much. I really liked this, it was different, full, and fun to listen to. I'd say 8.8/10. Second song, back to English, there is background "mmm" with the main singing. It's melancholic, also alien like sounds in the right ear. It's monotonous and not energetic. It increased volume two times in my left ear, I love that. I liked the voice change in 2:38. It changed again it was more desperate. Long outro. It was unique, but also boring, so 7.1/10. Third song, I love the start. It's energetic, nevermind, and now it is again. There's pauses after that energy burst. It's only energy now. I like the guitar, his voice is not soft, but not annoying. Long outro. It felt too long even though it wasn't, 7/10 worse than the last one. 4th song, I like the use of piano here. He sings in such a good way. Chorus is bad. Very monotonous. I'm not impressed at all, though I like those instruments. It was nice, but tooo uninteresting 6.8/10 5th song, start is great, it's energetic. It's simple, but fun. There is trombone like instrument. This one's was better than some slow ones here. 7.7/10. 6th song. Different vocal start. Not bad, it's not full of energy, however, it is sad. He used vocals at the end. Worse than the last one 7.3/10, I usually don't talk this less about songs. 7th song, alien instruments. Background voice saying "faster". It got slower now and stays like that, bad. It's so repetitive. Instrumental break with the guitar. Outro is very big. I'd say 6.2/10. 8th song, soft voiced, plus sad. Chorus is not fully different, though it's something. I did not like this one, it's chill and relaxing, but that's not what I came here for. 6/10. 9th song, it's enthusiastic. I like the guitar in the left and some instrument in the right ear, while there is this constant sound in the middle, a beat I suppose. His voice is aggressive, then not. WOW what a change so suddenly, it's how the lyrics are said. Long outro. For the change I rate it 7.2/10. 10th song, I like how he says "electric guitar", the beat is making it better. Best part is that otherwise it's boring. Whole song was that almost, there were verses, but not remarkable. Because of repeating name I say 7.6/10. 11th song, I love the mysterious start. Different instruments going on, that went on too much, and the vocals are a disappointment (was a glitch at the start of it). I'm not liking this, making the whole song on that beat is not a good choice, plus the way he sings is different, but in a bad way. Spooky song it is undeniably though. 2 minute outro: some talking in between, which is scary as fuck, a frog?!, guitar came in, the man talking was actually weird. This was most uniquely done, 7.9/10 for that. Overall I'm not impressed, I wanted more from them, I didn't it was gonna be this lame overused vibe. There were some parts in songs that were catchy and interesting otherwise it was repetitive (expected). So 3 stars seems like a fair rating, could have been worse.
I’ll always switch if I hear Talking heads on the radio, but in an album I got it. This is pretty cool.
More fun than expected. 3.25 stats
First listen through on the car stereo sounded like a muddy mumbled mess. Headphones corrected the issue. Memories Can't Wait stood out for me. Overall there is an anxiety inducing or manic energy for me. Which didn't work with me today. I believe I would need more time with this.
Not bad.
Meh. Didn't like his voice. Or songs. Haha
Better than I expected since I usually don't listen to them. Added a few songs to my 2024 Playlist
I expected to like this more, I'm barely able to give it a three
I like Talking Heads but this was a little hard to get through
True Talking Heads 'stuff' here. What a flashback to the '70's and revisit of their style and sound. The era of (true) MTV videos really brought these guys into the limelight. Thanks, this was a good one.
This is good but I always was to like talking heads more! Good diversity between songs 3.9
A&R folks were way more adventurous in the late 70's. Very cool to hear this band on the front end of their development...
Starts out with some raw-er rock, seques to more prog-ey with lower energy and volume
I knew less of this than I thought. Three tracks in the middle are brilliant but the rest didn't catch me as much. Very possible that my ranking will go up a star with additional listens.
They definitely get points for having a unique sound, but this didn't do enough for me to move it beyond a 3.
Pretty good
Interesting sound with each song. Great vocal harmony as well.
Dated
Technically speaking, these Talking Heads are good, I know this. However, any time I have to listen to one of their albums, I groan. They really aren’t my speed or style. Some of these tracks are bearable, but a lot are just annoying. Whatever. 3/5
Very interesting, much more alternative (dada) than expected
Interesting
breaking voices. Love the highlights not the low lights
