This was so chilled. An example of a great instrumentals only record
Overraskende god!
Meget cool
Really nice listening experience. Take Five is a certified banger!
Very smooth and easy listening music. Rather enjoyed it.
Pretty solid. Didn’t like how breathy the sax sounded but I dunno if that’s cause this is super old and recording has come a long way. Otherwise very interesting and nice listen. Wonky rhythms which I liked
8/10
I loved this and would give it a 9/10 if I could. Listening experience was improved by the fact that the weather is getting cold and it was raining this weekend.
Nice, smooth, autumn-y vibes for the weekend. I did enjoy this album. 🍃🍷🥞
I don't know dick about jazz, but I want to know more. I do know that this shit was groovy as fuck.
Great stuff. Easy accessible jazz.
Epic jazz quartet and recording.
Love 🍂🍁
Really energetic start. Would this be easy listening jazz? Take Five is a fun classic. For 33 minutes this seemed to go on for a while, but it was nice and I could see this as background music for a party.
I knew take five, but never payed attention to the rest of the album. Phenomenal.
Happy jazz
Jazz and wonderful, relaxing, and very easy to listen to, Perfect!!!!!
Took a bit to get into, at times it did come close to becoming background music but it always managed to pull me back and regain my interest. Overall I enjoyed it and definitely worth another few listens.
4.5
The A-side is fantastic, but it dips a bit on the B-side. 4 stars
Just a pleasant listen, but it probably would've sounded more interesting if I heard it at the time it was released
Classic
An album I bought recently, very cool. Take five is the best track by quite a bit! 3.5 rounded up Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes. 10/1001, 10/43 (23%) Will I get? Already have
Very classic, no doubt good to have on with afternoon cocktails
Woah, jazz can be fun! Learning to play Take Five on guitar changed my life so will always love it. Big up Dave B!
#109/1001. More jazz and 2nd LP from tje fifties in this week. A refreshing change. Some nice unusual rhythm grooves, which they unfortunately break out of during most of the solos. Kind of white man's intellectual grooves? Take Five is of course the masterpiece here, which we learned about already in 5th or 6th grade. After catching my attention in the beginning I lost focus, which for me means the music failed to inspire through the whole. But for the excellent bits a four.
Simply wonderful
One of my earliest forays into jazz and I still enjoy this album a lot. It sounds so fresh and clear for an album from the 50s and it’s hinting towards the fusion genre way way before it really became so prevalent
- So many interesting tidbit parts if you listen closely - can almost picture busy streets and a chill protagonist walking through the speeding taxis while day dreaming about strolling through a park with love interest
you like jazz?
Smooth and very easy to listen to.
Pretty timeless and great. Of course there’s “Take Five” which almost feels overplayed at this point. But this is still an album I’d throw on. 4.5/5
Awesome jazz album. Listening to this really improved my day.
exquisite 🤌(especially take five obviously)
Vive le jazz
This album is not as gimmicky as it might seem on the surface. By 1959 many jazz artists had already played with various time signatures in their playing. The real charm of this album is the tight playing by all members of Brubeck’s quartet. Desmond’s playing is particularly beautiful throughout the record. Perhaps its status in the jazz canon is a bit over rated but not by me. Very enjoyable!
I generally enjoy listening to these old jazz albums, especially now that my son does jazz band at his school. This one proved to be no different. Take Five is one of those songs that you have definitely heard, whether it is in some show or an old ad. I feel like this was in an ad for some luxury item or an old Apple commercial. It's very cool and well constructed. Definitely the highlight of this album. But stick around for the other tunes as well. Excellent playing, both individually and together. Love to hear actual talent like this, seems like that is kind of lost these days.
Here is the jazz album that you have to listen to before you die. Heard. Enjoyed. That's all I really know about jazz.
Nice
Great Jazz!!!
For a lyric-less jazz album, I'd give it high marks. And Take Five is pretty good, objectively speaking.
Fedt nok
Take Five is the song I most associate with this style of jazz and I'm here for it. Excited to get the rest of the album. This is fun! Real quaint and full of fun plays on rhythms and themes across the tracks. Flawless handoffs between the 4 of them. Got damn, Take Five hits so fucking hard. What a perfect song. I really need to get more into jazz. I don't ever listen to lyrics first, always music, and that's all this is! Time signatures, what even are they??? That was great. Solid 4 push 5.
This is a great album. Listened while watching a replay of golf. My wife even enjoyed it
this was good. not great but very good. it felt kinda safe compared to other classic jazz albums we’ve gotten on here. but i mean there’s a reason Dave Brubeck isn’t talked about in the same way as a Davis or Coltrane!
Some nice chill jazz. I love Take Five but I haven't really found any reason to go back to this one apart from that. 7/10 Favourite: Take Five Least Favourite: Kathy's Waltz
I have a difficult time talking about my feelings on music, because I don't feel like I have the proper knowledge to express my thoughts without defaulting to simplistic statements such as "I liked it". But I have to say, this album really did help me to gain a foothold on what the genre had to offer. It can be fun to think of each instrument as an element of a story. The piano set the mood, the sax plays the part of a narrator, the bass sets the pace, and the drums add a bit of drama and flair. Everyone might pull a different feeling, but I think that's sort of what it's all about So yeah, I liked it.
Interesting and enjoyable funky album
Hip, unorthodox, and a definite must have
Great werkin music
Excellent jazz album with some great tunes. Take five was my personal favorite off the album
Was a nice discovery.
Nice!
The pinnacle of West Coast cool jazz. Objectively speaking, it’s a perfect album – laid-back yet inventive, masterfully executed from start to finish, and featuring a few tracks that have become all-time classics. Take Five is one of the most covered jazz standards ever for a reason – and the original interpretation is still one of the best ones to this day. The only reason I’m not giving it a 5* is because it’s just slightly too smooth for me. I’m not too big on cool jazz, which means it’s not a record I listen to very often ; maybe once or twice a decade, on a rainy sunday afternoon. I prefer my jazz with a little bit more risk-taking and insanity (yes, that means free jazz). But it’s still a solid 4,5* for me.
very jazzy album, music is something you’d imagine finding in a drinking&/or smoking lounge in the early 1900’s.
An old favourite of mine, great easy listening jazz with plenty of complexity.
Loved this Music to work to, or just sit & enjoy the melodies
3. Plus 1 extra for take 5
Hyvää shittii. Jazzstandardia ja upea kansi. Pitäs hankkii tää. Tykkään paljon! 4/5
good background music
Much gentler than my usual taste in jazz, but you can’t deny the smoothness and fluidity of this album. Take Five aside (it’s a classic, everyone knows it) the rest of the album includes such tight yet airy playing, it really bumbles along like a long pleasurable summer’s day. A real treat to sit down and listen to.
I took one semester of jazz at CSUN, I know what I’m talking about.
This album made the start of my day so classy and chill, it gave me so much confidence. It’s just a really nice album to play in the background, feels swaggy and the switch ups are actually so so great and keep the ride interesting. It gave me whiplash vibes and that made it even better ☝🏼
this is instrumental, pretty neat tho
I whinge about jazz and how I don't know anything about it so I'm little lost and don't know my ass from a modal shift, but this album I know. Maybe it's babby's first jazz and the big brained jazzercisists have all moved on to more complicated stuff, but I don't really care. It's good.
For me, this is a really high quality jazz album and for me as someone who can struggle with the genre sometimes, it never felt overindulgent. The opening track (Blue Rondo) got things off a jolly high tempo start and it rarely dipped too much after that. Was interesting reading this was a pioneering jazz album as it was at an atypical speed for the genre. It had enough musical variation while all feeling like it had a clear strain of slightly funky jazz throughout. I also think it was (for me) a really good length to not become same-y. Nice to find some more jazz that I would happily listen to again!
Four cool guys making a timeless album get four stars
It’s ironic that in Dave Brubeck’s attempt to make jazz more complex, he actually made it more accessible. Time Out, his 1959 foray into odd time signatures, polyrhythm, and mixed meter, not only ended up going platinum and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard pop charts, but it also yielded jazz’s best-selling single of all time: “Take Five.”
Great album, classic for a reason
Classic
This jazz feels ‘lighter’ to me. Is it because it’s piano jazz? I wouldn’t know because I’m uneducated and stupid. But by “take five” I was enjoying it. This and a Friday afternoon drive home felt pretty good
Not my normal genre of choice but was a very pleasant change up.
Better than Coldplay
Ganska standard jazz
I think it's official. Im a Jazz guy now. This one was a bit basic but you can tell how monumental it must have been at the time and how important it was for the future. 8/10
4 gooooood listening
Somehow really nostalgic sounding
stellar album!!! Take 5 is so great. Between a 4 and 5 here just because i'm not sure how much diversity is in the album but take 5 is one of the greatest songs of all time
All time classic Jazz record.Excellent sound, enjoyable, nothing to complain about at all, definitely belongs on the list as it is the epitome of this type of Jazz album.
A lovely little pallet cleanser after a string of rather unpleasant records.
You can tell these guys were really enjoying themselves back in the day. Take Five is exactly what comes to mind when I think of jazz—and for what it is, it’s pretty much perfect. I don’t usually reach for this kind of music, but I get the appeal: the contrasting sounds, unexpected rhythms, and that signature contra beat. The way it blends these elements into a cohesive, wordless narrative is impressive. It captures a lyrical experience without a single word. This kind of jazz always feels like a cinematic stroll through Central Park - smooth, stylish, and full of character.
I tend to go for more daring, moody, and less commercial mid-century jazz stylings like Mingus and Coleman. I gotta say this hits though, even if it did eventually age into elevator music or Starbucks playlist muzak at some point. At the very least, given the huge chart success of Time Out in 1959, this record gave a wider listenership an opportunity to delve deeper and perhaps get into some more challenging jazz. I wanna hope that Time Out served as a gateway album that hepped the kids into more challenging stuff released the same year like Ah Um and The Shape of Jazz To Come. But even if they didn't explore further, I'm still encouraged that audiences of popular music were vibing with odd time signatures and syncopated instrumentals at all. Either way, this is a totally easy and decent listen. A totally classic, unlabored, and pretty worthwhile way to decorate 40 something minutes of your waking hours. Maybe even a chance to access some of the mood my grandfather probably got into with this after a glass of scotch and a long day.
Strange Meadowlark has an opening piano section that is equal parts jazz harmony and romantic-era sappy virtuosity. Really feels like an important unlock point for the conceptual peaks of multiple composition types/genres. At times deliberately tonal with sax lines that resemble a Bach étude —building an accessible familiarity into otherwise experimental structures. Prime example is Three to Get Ready Big band flair and frills of the American Broadway musical sensibility pepper the album, nowhere clearer than in Kathy’s Waltz What he does on this album is similar to what gershwin did with rhapsody in blue — using jazz as a jumping off point to explore the boundaries of a host of styles, from big band, broadway, vaudeville, blues, and even classical and romantic stylings. Distinctly creative and generative.
Really solid jazz
8/10 thank you state sponsored jazz
Jazzy
Felt a little like Christmas time at the Olive Garden
I love this elevator music
One of my favorites
Super nice smooth jazz.
I don't have any knowledge or real experience with Jazz, but this was a really great listen - some lovely tunes and some really exciting ones. 9/10.
Take five, seems like a song one doesn’t know one knows Also guess the name behind the bar in Maastricht
Good
1) Blue Rondo à la Turk: Sounds like program music, doesn't it? Exotic composition in a way that other genres couldn't pull off quite as naturally as jazz can. 2) Strange Meadow Lark: The calmest, smoothest, most ambient piece of the album. Surprisingly varied. 3) Take Five: If there's any jazz tune that one can describe as having significant pop-cultural impact, it's this one. 4) Three to Get Ready: Having to follow Take Five, this one feels like a bit of a let down. Nonetheless, I do appreciate the sense of movement that the piano provides so consistently throughout. 5) Kathy's Waltz: Amusing little piece. Starts out nowhere close to being a waltz. Then, a little more than a minute in, you notice that somehow the drums have changed their rhythm. And by the end you've forgotten that it was ever anything but 3/4. 6) Everybody's Jumpin': The last two tracks are somewhat simpler in structure than the rest, but still quite interesting and enjoyable. Personally, I don't particularly like what the piano's doing in its parts here all that much. 7) Pick up Sticks: Some continuity to this one from the previous piece, not only because of their common time signature. Of the two, I do enjoy this one more. An album that resonates on many levels: The immediate emotional, the carnal rhythmic, the intellectual academic. Music that you can feel, vibe to, analyze. While the tracks do go along reasonably well with one another, I find myself caring more for some individual pieces than the album in its totality. Without a doubt a very artistic endeavour. Compositions with all the technical prowess of a Bach fugue, but none of its rigidity. But, still, maybe a bit too polished overall? Is it fair to say that it's lacking imperfections?
Pretty good jazz album. Seems a lot simpler than it actually is.
Fun jazz album
This is great driving music.
I really like this album, however, my opinion on jazz holds very little weight. It's easy to listen to without ever bordering on background music
I dig it. Pleasant, gentle, accessible.
Gute Einführung in die Jazz Welt. Strange Meadow Lark und Take Five sehr interessant
Really fun listen. Makes me excited to hear more Jazz.
I’m not a big jazz fan, but this is great no matter how you slice it.
Dope
It's a very good cool jazz album, very compact and very well composed. A very easy listen, very smooth but still interesting. I liked how even though it's a pretty relaxed record, they manage to innovate and compose interesting songs with different time signatures and nice passages. I think that having classic tracks such as "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five" make it a classic record. Aside from that, my favourites were "Kathy's Waltz" and "Strange Meadow Lark".
Good and enjoyable
Nice piano Jazz. Not too exciting but enjoyable. Though less energetic than I usually prefer. I want more Jazz, I feel like there’s not that much on this list thus far
I do enjoy Jazz and listen to it from time to time, but was surprised to hear that i recognised a few tracks on the album. Saved to spotify favourites - potential vinyl purchase
I mean, it’s basically a perfect record but I can’t give it a 5 until I find out how much Coltrane and Davis is on this list.
Great Jazz Record. Holded up to its standing and Rating. Was smooth and recognized some parts that got sampled elsewhere. (4.0/5.0)
This was surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected. I recognized a couple. It plays short enough to where I could see myself revisiting in the future for a full spin background listen, which is more than I can say for most Jazz albums.
I’ve always enjoyed this record. Even with the odd time signatures (5/4, 9/8, etc.), the album still has nice grooves, hooks and melodies to not get lost between the lines. This is my kind of jazz.
I actually listen to this album fairly frequently. This plus noise cancelling headphones gets me through airports while maintaining my sanity. Couldn’t tell you why this is distinguished among jazz albums, I just know I enjoy it. And since o started listening to it, I’ve heard these songs at many a jazz/piano bar.
Cool jazz, a little repetative.
Un pilier du jazz
Jazzy le truc
A very classic sounding jazz album. I like the bass. The piano is nice. Would enjoy listening to this in a cocktail bar.
Great album love the clash between instruments & the bass might be my new favorite instrument
Fun!
Seems a pattern of albums with no lyrics scoring 4 ⭐️
Lovely classic jazz. What’s not to like?
Great playing, great recording
Brilliant jazz
Lemme just bust out my copy of this album on vinyl and give it a listen. Yep, still spectacular.
Not a big jazz person but this was pretty good!
Take Five probably the most recognisable jazz song ever. Lovely listen
Great jazz.
So interesting to learn the story of this album when I've heard so many bits and pieces throughout movies and such! Truly inspiring
Sometimes jazz feels too chaotic or like "too much" for me, to the point that it's not very enjoyable. That's not the case here - it felt smoother and more structured. I had it on while I was working and it didn't feel distracting - no horns blaring aggressively in my ear or super rowdy solos. It stayed interesting though with unique time signatures and little rhythmic surprises. It helped me lock in a little bit. A little embarrassed that I recognized Kathy's Waltz from a silly edited TikTok audio but that's still kind of a fun surprise. Take Five was cool to hear as a former high school jazz band kid. I don't reach for jazz very often at all unless it's jazz rap but I really liked this album and might keep it on rotation for calm, chilly, cozy work days at home or for a little dinner party. Very good stuff. This record came out in 1959 and aged like fine wine and set a strong precedent for jazz and building an album moving forward. I was torn between a 4 and 5, but I'm giving it a 4. I would probably give it a 4.5 if I could. 4/5.
Likte denne godt. Kan ikke nok om jazz og tidssignaturer
Smooth as butter.
Brelebo, dugo nisam čula take five pa me baš ugodno iznenadilo!
In the mid-90’s I bought 40 or so Dave Brubeck albums from a guy in Texas for around $150 or so plus shipping. Made my money back on that batch, I’m pretty sure. Anyway, a great artist and a great album. May 5/4 Be With You.
I think my grandparents may have owned this album, because I'm getting some pretty strong flashbacks to attempting to sit still while warily eyeballing some suspicious vegetables. Have they been boiled to death? Have a taste and find out! Despite all the memories it's dredging up, this music isn't bad!
Smooth and good for relaxing or working, but not really memorable.
good. nothing I havent heard before. very good.
Jazz, 1959 -> 4
Love the polyrhythmic, different time meters on this though it was mostly background music for me. When I hear it I think of old car commercials. Undeniably cool though
Hell yeah. Great classic jazz album. Take Five is definitely the soaring masterpiece of the record but the whole thing is silky smooth, love strange meadow lark and kathy's waltz. Vince Guaraldi, Bill Evans, and Brubeck are the holy trinity of pretty-fly-for-a-white-guy jazz (sorry Chet Baker, please don't haunt me, your ghost would be terrifying)
Really nice.
i love jazz final rating 8/10
Playful, expressive, dynamic. There’s something here for everyone. I think this would be the album to show a self-proclaimed hater of jazz to turn their ways around. It’s fun, bouncy, precise, and maybe one of the best albums to play alongside to any task. What a delightful thing.
Clearly a hugely influential album in the jazz genre. There were several places where I caught musical figures and rhythms that have been sampled by artists I wouldn't have expected. Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five both had parts that had been borrowed by Nobuo Uematsu for use in Final Fantasy 7 and 9. I enjoyed listening to the album, even though jazz isn't really one of my go-to genres.
This feels more like it could be the background music at a cocktail party than some of the other jazz albums I've had so far, which demanded more of my attention. But it would be the most sophisticated cocktail party of 1959.
I wish I knew more about jazz. This was an enjoyable album. I could go for more like it.
I recognized a few of these tracks and really enjoyed the album. I actually love a lot of the drumming on here.
So incredibly good. Just puts you in the right mood.
Take five absolute classic The drumming in this one is pheeeew great great great songs 4
Absolute classic. A great listen.
As with most jazz I find this difficult to review with any vigor. I think part of that is how I listen to jazz -- it isn't so much about song structures and production as it is the journey and overall feel. I'm here for the motion, subtle shifts, and blind corners. As a result, I rarely find that I tire of jazz albums in the same way as other genres. In the case of this album, I found plenty to love and dig into. I don't know much of music theory, but just trying to tap along with Blue Rondo a la Turk it is definitely an atypical meter. Makes for an angsty listen as if the ground is constantly falling in front of you. Love the little sobering reprieves of swing style sax solos. Keywork on Strange Meadow Lark takes the cake for me. Completely pleasant. Take Five is a jazz standard that I have definitely heard covers of. Unquestionably tasty little number. Three to Get Ready is a new one to me and I really enjoy the interplay between the drums and piano here. Constantly shuffling. Kathy's Waltz and Everybody's Jumpin' are fine, but low points of the record IMO. Which isn't to say much because this one is well above the waterline throughout. I'd say this is an easy 4 from me.
Love a nice jazzy album to end my work week. Has a driving bassline and pleasant array of instruments that works beautifully as background music. The beginning of Kathy's Waltz gives me Severance vibes but in major key. High 3/low 4, giving it the bump because it's Friday and I have been in a pretty sour mood on my last few reviews.
This first song is lovely. Take Five I know I've heard before and definitely scratches a jazzy itch. Some of the jazz on here has gotten a little stale to me but this was a nice pick me up. Highly enjoyed that.
Ok jazz album
Classic !
Some parts of the album feel like a blend of classical and jazz, sometimes it makes me think of Gershwin with a ’50s twist. That’s probably why the funky edge of hard bop, which was all the rage at that time, is pretty much absent. It’s simply a “white jazz” kind of vibe. That said, some of the tracks are absolute classics, and even if I’m not qualified to judge their technical merit, it’s a real treat to rediscover them in this setting. A very nice album to me.
Dont usually listen to such jazzy stuff but that was fun and I took a solid nap while listening 😭
It's a classic for a reason!
Those cats are swingin'
I'm not sophisticated enough to understand some (most) of the techniques used here but I do know I enjoyed the experience a lot, and Strange Meadow Lark was particularly stunning and will definitely go into regular rotation for me.
This is my kind of jazz. Will sure listen to it again, it is timeless despite being the oldest album on the list so far.
Classic jazz album; consistently good songs with interesting time signatures.
'Kathy's Waltz', 1:17 in, sounds so familiar... Anyway, I liked this one. I've had 'Take Five' in one of my playlists for a while, but I've come to like other tracks off this album more - like 'Three to Get Ready' and 'Blue Rondo à la Turk'. Good overall experience, but probably not a repeated listen for me since it's not fully up my alley.
Great album all the way through. Some all time classics on it as well.
A nice pick me up from The Cure. Always a fun listen.
Dave Brubeck's jazz sounds like spring: light, breezy, playful; It sounds like jazz for a Ghibli film. I bet Joe Hisaishi loves this.
jazz music for both the theory nerds and for your grandma
maybe i'm biased because this is an album that i've heard before but i love this album. it's so fun. somehow it was like my intro to actually enjoying jazz (i think la la land and then this). i still don't understand time signatures.
Didn’t expect to like this but I listened to it while studying so maybe that helped its case. Got kinda bored of it by last few songs but im feeling generous
Delightful
Pretty awesome
Old people kinda ate with this one, what else have they been hiding from us? 🤨
mixing was crazy, innovative songs too
felt like it had it's own voice and things to say. too short by far.
I have definitely heard of this legend pianist. Perfect album for a Monday morning in the office. This album is so good. Have not wanted to turn it off at all.
classy soft jazz, old memory
Smooth smooth jazz
Renowned for its odd time signatures and cool, west-coast grooves, Time Out is one of the most recognizable jazz albums of all time, and its lead single, 'Take Five,' has sold more records than any other jazz song ever. This makes sense, since the album has a songwriting element that most other jazz records don't possess - it boasts memorable hooks and one-two punches that hardly miss. But those 'other' jazz albums, the less singsong ones, are by and large more impressive than this, tho in no way is Brubeck uninteresting or uninspired. I see his influence ranging from jazz's inner circle to instrumental rock/blues like The Allman Brothers. And w/ a record like it, you have to remind yourself that the guy most likely killed elsewhere.
musical balanced, fresh and jazzy sound
Great for Jazz !
Enjoyable listen for my workday. 4/5
It can't quite take five (stars), but these are some catchy dinner party songs so it can take four
Quite possibly the best crowd-pleaser jazz has to offer. Savvy enough to excite uninitiated, accessible enough to soothe the uninterested and technical enough to provoke some good chin strokes from the snobs.
This was the first jazz album I have listened to from start to finish. The first jazz musician I ever heard was Fats Waller, and he is quite a character and a fantastic jazz artist. This album was a completely different listening experience, not in a bad way at all, just different. Unique sounds that I have not been exposed to before. Blue Rondo À la Turk was a phenomenal opening track, which let me know right off the rip that this was going to be a listeing experience with changing tempos and varying intensities. Take Five is great, we all know that. The rest of the tracks were all good, but nothing stood out remarkably. Great album to have in the background while working or as the main focus of my attention. This has definitely made me want to listen to more jazz music and I would recommned this album to others.
About as classic as it gets. Some of these motifs show up in other artists work all over the place. Jazz reminds me of rain and coffee. Love it.
Take Five is a regular listen. The rest is fine, but I probably wouldn’t seek them out.
Put this in for someone who says they don't like jazz.
I could not help myself from tapping my foot or doin a lil dance while listening to this.
Klassiker einfach
I don't typically enjoy jazz but I liked this. It was a good middle ground between background music and chaos. It balanced well and the oboe was an interesting touch. C
I liked the first track the most. Some were a little too slow for me but I'm not the most patient so overall I liked it. Also I've never really listened t jazz before so this was a good start I think.
Beautiful and awesome and wonderful
Inject this directly into my veins
Very solid album. Good intro to jazz. Almost a 5 star but it's just missing something, as good as it is I don't find myself coming back to it often. When I do tho I do enjoy it
Still on the Alice in chains boat but it was actually pretty groovy
A Classic jazz ablum.
Hip Cat Jazz Guys. I like it man!
wow
Don’t really listen to Jazz ever. Heard of Dave Brubeck at least. I was enjoying it immensely and then Take Five came on, “ I know this “ I said to myself! Banging!
Obviously this is great and iconic and everything but if you've worked any shifts in any hipster food service kinda place Blue Rondo is borderline traumatic. I just feel like there's a queue out the door and someone is shouting at me that their latte is not microfoamy enough and it's 2013 so my skinny jeans are digging in. That's the only reason it's not 5*
This is a great album. And while I understand and see the impact from exploring other time signatures and feels, it ultimately still doesn't push enough boundaries or hit a level of perfection for me to give it a 5. I'd give it a 4.5, but for this scale, I feel a 4 is more appropriate, as I'm unsure if I think it absolutely should be in the 1001 list. It's a great jazz album, but I'm not sure if it stands out as much to me as others.
2 bangers and the rest is pretty pleasant jazz
Piacevolissimo.
Nice to listen to something different. Really really enjoyed - take 5 obviously a classic but the rest of the album also delivered. Cohesive and just nice on the ears.
Happily listen to this again
really, really enjoyed this. i gotta listen to more jazz!
I don't really like jazz and I don't really like taking baths, but I really quite enjoyed listening to this in the bath.
I’m in absolutely no position to judge jazz music but this is a nice listen
Fantastic for real. Not feeling a 5, even if Take 5 is on here.
Great music for its genre and to work to
I love it. Relaxed jazz vibe
Real nice listening
Low 4 Pleasently surprised! Cool jazz is a genre to discover. Very mellow
Good jazz and neo-soul album improving in each part.
Lovely. How can you not like this album
Perfect album for an afternoon snowfall. Unfortunately, I have the flu while listening to this but has cleared some congestion in my ear passages.
-my dad used to play this all the time, it’s one of the albums that first inspired an interest in in jazz when I was younger -very accessible, smooth, and well-done induction into the genre imo. maybe a little underwhelming at times but it’s completely unmatched in terms of creating a “vibe” for 50s jazz -Favorites are Blue Rondo à la Turk, Take Five, and Kathy’s Waltz
I liked this! Some may call it background music but it was soothing for me while tending to my vomiting family during the stomach flu.
Real nice. Some memorable moments and songs. The drum break in Take Five features possibly the greatest sounding drum kit of all time. Sounds like it's playing next to me. I'm adding an extra star for that piece of audio magic.
7/10
Friendly, warm, accessible.
Pretty good for jazz. I could listen to this more often. 4/5
So influential and the recording quality is amazing. Love all the cool time signature stuff as well
Very cool. Big fan. Balatro and this made for a nice combo. Also noticed a sample from a great rap song during one of the mid to late tracks.
yeah sure I like jazz
Take five in itself is iconic. However the album in it’s entirety is soothing yet playful, and to me, that’s what jazz is all about
yo i might become a jazz lover wtf i’m obsessed with this. it’s giving monsters inc omg and la la land too!! I feel like ive definitely heard the titular track before in some movies or soundtracks...
I don’t often “get” jazz, but I felt like I got this. Standouts are the first track and take five.
Smooooth jaaaazz
Highlights: Strange Meadows Lark, Take 5. In a nutshell: the album that made jazz hip again Sophisticated, yet casual. I was enjoying this so much I stopped taking notes during Take Five. Overall: 8/10
OMG ENFIN DU NÉCTAR POUR MES OREILLES
great record! quintessential jazz album, a must in any jazz collection
okay jazz hell yeah
Hab's richtig genossen!
Brilliant throughout, although the last track was the weakest. This hasn't dated, and feels like I could listen to this multiple times and not get bored. If I understood jazz more I might be able to speak more knowledgeably about why it is good
People who are not big jazz fans, like me, will like this. A classic.
liked songs: Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five, Kathy's Waltz, Pick Up Sticks Per Wikipedia: "Brubeck was nearly expelled when one of his music professors discovered that he was unable to sight-read. Several others came forward to his defense, however, arguing that his ability to write counterpoint and harmony more than compensated, and demonstrated his skill with music notation. The college was still concerned, but agreed to allow Brubeck to graduate after he promised never to teach piano." 4
I've never classed myself as a jazz fan, but after this album, I've started to make a Jazz playlist
I wrote this review and it disappeared. Long story short, it was a pleasant surprise to recognise some of these songs from films. I really enjoyed the album and listened to some of their other stuff afterwards
Not a huge Jazz fan. But hard not to like this stuff!
Jazz, traditionally a black man's game now done by a white guy all the same Take five here is the highlight it takes the grand spotlight for jazz, give me the experimental won't turn my head away from the spiritual I love what one calls post-bop Now I'm being a snob, time to stop Take FOUR Dave!
Oh it's the song of the advertisement of the banks on TV!
I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did! I listened to this for the whole day and I was entertained enough not to want to switch genre right after the album
Sophisticated and fun
“I know that song!”- the album
Good album will have to listen to it more to settle into it as I find with a lot of jazz albums
Classic yazz
Very relaxing, I love Jazz!
I'm not a jazz person, but this album is so good. Even to someone who never voluntarily pick anything close to jazz. I would definitely hear this album again in the future. It also sounds familiar. I can swear I've never heard this album before, but it sounds familiar. Maybe it was featured in the films I've watched before. Anyways it's GOOD.
Jazz that I recall from my grandmother’s Lincoln continental.
I really like it , but for me, it gets a bit boring at a few stages
Very pleasant
In contrast to the wild free jazz of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman from around this time, this is a measured and precise experiment with unusual time signatures played on the piano by Dave Brubeck while the alto sax of Paul Desmond swoops around like a big swoopy thing. Anyone listening to this is guaranteed to immediately become 100% cooler although wearing dark suits and spectacles may be a side effect.
Mukavaa jazzia, etenkin levyn ekat biisit
Kathy's Waltz has the funny TikTok sound. Favourite Songs: Blue Rondo à la Turk, Strange Meadow Lark, Take Five, Three to Get Ready. Least Favourite Songs: Everybody's Jumpin', Pick Up Sticks.
Great
Finally, some jazz that is interesting and really goes places! The opening track and Take Five are obvious highlights, but the chiller songs are a nice reprieve from the odd time signatures.
Although I was familiar and loved with Take Five, I never looked beyond that. Discovered this a major inspo for Claude Nougaro.
Awesome jazz album
En positiv overraskelse å plutselig høre Take Five her.
Blue Rondo à la Turk Take Five
Lovely on a Sunday!
Cool Jazz.
Time Out, named for each piece being in a different experimental time signature, is truly a classic album of jazz. I have it on colored vinyl and it gets spun often. This is definitely high quality mood music so turn down the lights, shake up a cocktail and bliss out to the vibes.
me gusta
Everyone knows (and must love) "Take Five". Fun to listen to the whole album. A good one to have on in the background whilst cooking etc.
Really enjoyed this album
Delightful. Jazz perfection.
Solid smooth jazz, made me feel like an adult
Lively! This album is timeless.
Pretty fire jazz record. Take Five is a classic. I'd like to relisten soon, but I definitely enjoyed it. 4 stars!
I don't really know how to rate this. I don't know enough about jazz, I either like what it sounds like or I don't. As evidence of this, Spotify played 9 songs after this album and I didn't realize they were different artists. I guess this gets a 4 because I would definitely listen to it again, but it's pretty faint praise coming from me
I don’t know if I like all jazz, but I like this jazz!
I liked this one, not my favorite jazz album but I will probably add this into my jazz rotation (such as it is).
Slick jazz that moves you
I’m sure I’d have my usual not fully appreciating of instrumentals to share if I listened to this like any other time but I’m tired and doing the dishes and I rlly enjoyed this.
My mom used to always listen to this, so I feel like I like it a lot because of the nostalgia
As someone who doesn't listen to a ton of jazz, I've been a little surprised during this list with how many of the jazz tracks I recognize. This one might have the second-most (to Kind of Blue) that fall into that category, which is pretty impressive in its own right.
Two bonafide bangers and an assortment of other lovely ditties
Jazzy
This is pretty much the jazz album for me. On the surface really smooth and listenable and hides a technical complexity that you probably need a degree to understand fully
