It's Dave Brubeck, of course it's awesome!
Very nice for working/background, reminded me of peanuts.
Really liked this.
Very nice jazz album but it all tends to blend together for me.
Excellent jazz, well written and played. A great album for someone whose not familiar with the genre to start with.
woohoo lets get this party started
Lovely interesting music. I haven’t liked much jazz so far on this, but I knew I liked Take Five already and I wasn’t let down by the rest.
Awesome
Took 5
Cool and Jazzy. Not unpleasant. Would willingly revisit. No wow moments, but nothing that needed to be skipped. The recording sounds great for being 65 years ago.
Made me think of the Monsters Inc soundtrack throughout - especially the scene where Mike Wazowski is on the date with his girlfriend in the fancy restaurant. Very warm tones seen across the jazz tracks here which certainly became synonymous with Pixar in later years. A nice listen.
Overall: 8/10 Really interesting jazz with some crazy time signature business going on! As someone who doesn't listen to a lot of jazz, I find it hard to analyze critically so I just kind of judge it by my experience while listening to it. I thought this was a lot of fun and I especially liked the piano playing done by Mr. Brubeck. This is classy, hip and cool and I highly recommend it. Fav Song: Blue Rondo à la Turk Least Fav Song: Three to Get Ready
Jazz without a care Breezy sophistication Pleasantly nuanced
Strange Meadow Lark is too slow
4 STARS!
Especially "take five"
So amazing
Great jazz album with one of if not the most recognizable jazz songs of all time, “Take Five”. The rest of the album is solid if not a bit overshadowed by the legacy of the biggest song. 7/10
makes me forget about time
vibed hard but lacked edge
I can see where Black Country, New Road get a lot of inspiration from! Also, I don't think I knew Take Five was made in the 50s; for me it's so synonymous with the early 90s (acid jazz, TV ads etc.)
Take 5 is a blast. Worth the hype!
Bit basic but still a classic
83% Best: Blue Rondo à la Turk; Take Five Must-Hear? Great album, but Idk about "must-hear"...
It's a good choice for the mood I'm in today, I just want something nice and relaxed in the background. Take 5, having been used in so many different pieces of media, was welcoming and warm. Overall a solid album that I wouldn't hate owning on vinyl
Fantastic album that has aged extremely well. Fav Track: Strange Meadow Lark
2 jazz standard in this one
Nice to listen to surrounded by autumn
Not my favorite genre but it's well-made. Good as unobtrusive background music.
Nice! I actually just listened to this one again before seeing this. This was another one of the first Jazz albums I listened to. It was recommended to me by a customer at Green Light. He wasn't a huge fan of Fusion Jazz but loves this more understated Jazz. He was (is? Not dead) a big drum nerd and always mentioned the drumming on this record, which is really good and often the star. Obviously Take Five is a huge track and one of my favorite Jazz tunes. I always get the piano riff stuck in my head again the drums stand out most here. I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking this is the epitome of cocktail Jazz, though. It does get a little wibbly and slow at times. Almost sounding like an old Disney soundtrack. Ultimately I do think this is an incredibly accessible jazz record and I do recommend buying it on vinyl. 4
Great jazz album that includes the absolute classic, Take Five. Other standouts were Kathy's Waltz and Blue Rondo A La Turk.
Very easy to listen to and great for having on as background music. I enjoyed it and it really does evoke an image of a 50’s or early 60’s dinner party. 4
Take Five is an excellent song in amongst some other greats. We really enjoyed this album, from start to finish: very chilled out.
Classic jazz
Jazz, good stuff
A timeless classic.
Classic upbeat jazz record. Really enjoyed it
You gotta love Time Out. The uncommon time signatures make every composition here so fun and unique and the spirit of the band just gives the music here a joyous energy. A celebration of what jazz was at the time
Absolutely fantastic!
Nice and relaxing
¡Me gustó!
Ya like jazz? In this case yes! Couple classics and the rest all good. Once a month or two good listening
It was jazzy, and sounded nice, but did not make for great background music to play with Battlefield 2142.
Nice!
Do you like Jazz? Sometimes, and this was a solid entry in the genre.
Amazing jazz album with ultimate classic 'Take Five'.
Maar geweldig he. 3.9
Blue Rondo a la Turk - what a sick song to start with. awesome energy. Take Five! try not to dance along to this one. So influential so nice to listen to. I don't even really like jazz but I could listen to this any time. Def hits 4 stars for me.
Good sounding album with a few popular tunes. I already had this in my personal library
This was just what I needed to kick off my week. I love Blue Rondo A la Turk and Take Five—such catchy little numbers. Light, airy, energetic, and, well, charming.
While not as expressive as some other works in the genre - it sure does go down easy while also moving the ball forward. Immaculately recorded.
I enjoy it. I don’t fully understand it, but I enjoy it.
That's some high quality hotel lounge music, in the best sense.
Fantastic album! Good jazz from start to finish. Jazz is one of those genres I haven't listened to much. But this one made it easy and I was all like "hey man, I am actively enjoying this music."
This is a great jazz album
As someone who doesn't like jazz all that much this is the "main stream" album that everyone can tolerate. Not a lot of improve and all over the place in the most random ways. Structured, Melodic, and fun,
so interesting. love that whacky time signatures. insanely tight group. 8/10
A jaunty little cocktail album for the cool kids. Very enjoyable with a martini.
Some parts kinda drone along, but the main parts are really cool. I knew about 3 of them because I have a Jazz loving dad, which is kind of a blessing.
Pretty good for a jazz album.
good easy listening
blue rondo a la turk - I like the piano start, and the rhythm, nice ride cymbal, 9/8? maybe 9/4?, constant changes to time signature, nice walking bass part, changes to 4/4, high piano section at 4 mins strange meadow lark - piano solo at start, the drums coming in and bass and horn was very smooth take five - great song, I've heard this one before, love the 5/4 time signature, and the piano melody, and the ride cymbal, I like the drum rhythms in the middle section three to get ready - its like this 3-3-8 rhythm that's cool, nice subdued drums and nice acoustic bass filling the lower section, nice piano in right ear kathy's waltz - nice tempo, 4/4, nice piano in right, and cymbal rhythm in left, changes to 6/8, drums and piano/bass are playing at 2 different time signatures which is super interesting, then converges again everybody's jumpin' - horn and piano were following same melody, active piano pick up sticks - I really like the melody, toms at the end of album, nice fade out with just piano I'm taking a more passive listen on this one, it's just very calming music and therefore I don't have a lot to say about each song but it's enjoyable.
I never really considered myself a jazz fan but this list is proving otherwise. 4/5
So chill
4.3
Definitely some of the jazziest jazz to have ever jazzed.
This makes me want to own a smoking jacket. A very classy jazz album.
Now this is some amazing jazz right here. I've been needing more jazz lately. It's a genre that I haven't gotten to experience that much of. I still haven't gotten a single Miles Davis album on here, and he has like 4 of them on the list! Anyways, Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet will have to do for now. And oh boy, it sure does things. Easily the most interesting thing about this album is its use of weird time signatures. I love it. I've always had an appreciation for songs that are outside of the typical 4/4 time signature. I want weird stuff some times. The opener is mainly in 9/8! That's awesome! The compositions on these tracks are amazing. Funnily enough, the one song that wasn't composed by Dave Brubeck himself actually ended up being this album's biggest hit, "Take Five," which is also in a unique time signature, that being 5/4. That song is, of course, amazing. The other 6 songs are also quite good. Nothing in this album overstays its welcome, which is great. You love to see it. This may not be my favorite jazz album. I'd say A Love Supreme has it beat in that regard. But Time Out is truly a work of art that absolutely deserves the recognition it's gotten over the years like being put in the National Recording Registry and this list! High 4/5.
The perfect Album to listen to while you're high in an art museum. Sadly I was at home doing chores sober. Anyways had a good time.
Having never gotten much in to jazz I quickly recognized how influential this album was. Everything from direct samples to a general feel so much of this album is scattered throughout many of my favourites over the years and I had no idea at all. I thoroughly enjoyed this album and really surprised myself in doing so. What a wonderful album that deserves any praise it may receive.
Classic feels!
That's the background jazz I want to hear to chill alone. Take five is a classic.
I don't know enough to be able to appreciate the odd time signatures and technical stuff, but this was great nonetheless. Favorites: "Blue Rondo à la Turk", "Take Five", "Kathy's Waltz"
7/10. Very pleasant. Loved 'Take Five'. Overall, just soothing though and nothing stood out as 'outstanding' to me.
I loved having this on in the background while I worked. It really helped me focus.
I’m not sure what I expected with this album. A quick glance informed me it was 50’s jazz, which could have led to a really annoying album. Fortunately, it did not! The highlight here is definitely Take Five. This track is apparently the best selling jazz track in the history of time, and I can see why. The rest of the album lacks the level of character that Take Five gives, but is certainly still a pleasant listen. Jazz really is such a hit or miss genre for me.
Pretty solid; some great jazz titles
Man this was so peaceful to listen to. I felt like I needed a suit and a glass of wine while snapping to the beat pretentiously.
Very good, no idea how to talk about jazz. I love some of the motifs, like Blue Turk and Take Five. The other songs are good but don’t jump out as much.
ehh still jazz but it's got that one song that kind hits
Really enjoyed this.
Nice!
Great jazz quartet. Great jazz!
Lovely jazz. I don't understand jazz at all but this is lovely jazz
A very pleasant and enjoyable jazz album from the 1950s.
a beautiful jazz album. classic.
I think my favorite jazz album ever (so far - I'm ~200 albums in on this project). The type of album I actually want to return to. I don't know if I actually will, but I wouldn't mind it. And that is pretty cool.
Listened to this with my morning coffee and it was a great way to start the day.
Great sound! Love to cook to - jazzy, soulful ❤️
Great album, many classics and few duds. Low 4.
9/10 Nice one, not gonna lie. Great sounding.
Pretty good, interesting time signatures
Good start to the morning
Solid, easy listening
Classic
Great jazz album. Odd time signatures and fun!
Favourite Song: Take Five
could be good
The epitome of cool jazz. This is what I'd want to hear if I was chilling in a jazz club.
8/10 chill but also kinda boring towards the end
A great album cover, and a great-sounding jazz album inside too (at least to someone who's definitely *not* a jazz afficionado). I feel like I've heard at least parts of "Blue rondo a la turk" everywhere, but never realized it was from Dave Brubeck, so it's nice to finally place a name to a tune; the same with "Take Five". "Kathy's/Cathy's waltz" is also kind of trippy for the way the percussion eventually has a different time than the rest of the instruments. And I'm really intrigued that the inspiration for this album and its pieces came from a (US) State Department-sponsored trip through Eurasia; I guess it was musical diplomacy? (Ah I now see courtesy of Wikipedia that he was one of the US' jazz ambassadors--well done!) Either way, if this is indeed "cool jazz", I think I enjoyed this more than Miles Davis' "Birth of the cool" from earlier in the collection (in my rotation).
Cool jazz at its finest. Easy to listen to but interesting enough to keep me piqued throughout.
Really liked this one- close to 5 stars
Masterfully executed and an enjoyable listen. Not a genre I turn to often but this has to be one of the best of its kind. 7/10 (3.5/5)
Chill
Perfect background music (as Mia the main character of LALALAND would say), but worth also to listen with booth ears. In particular great dialogues between the instruments
Beautiful. Just lost one star because it's instrumental, which makes it unlikely for me to listen to it again.
Good album 👍
I love this album. It might not be one of my favorite jazz records but it's hard to find anything to dislike about it. It's super mellow and great to have on in the background after a long day. One of those albums that probably everyone should have and listen to from time to time. I don't know if it's one I would really sit and intently listen to, more just throw on to have music in the background. Most people would probably be at least vaguely familiar with Take Five and I think that's probably the standout on this album. The rest might not be quite as good and there are other jazz albums I'd pick from this list over this one but you can't really go wrong throwing this on. 4/5
Not usually one for jazz but this album is smooth and easy and just makes you feel right. Not a jarring disjointed improv'd note to be found.
An absolutely lovely cool jazz album, the track “Take Five” is iconic. I’m not always a huge fan of Dave Brubeck: his frequent use of unusual time signatures can sometimes be off putting, but he delivers here. 1959 was such an iconic year for jazz though, with Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and Charles Mingus each also releasing some of their best albums. So while I do think Time Out is excellent, it’s completely overshadowed but other jazz masterpieces.
Music like this makes me wish I understood music composition better. I have a general understanding about things like time signatures but I also know that some people will be able to hear a lot more in this album than I can. Despite that, even to my amateur ear, this a brilliant and complex album. I have to be in the right mood to listen to jazz but sometimes it's really the perfect thing to listen to, particularly when it's as beautifully composed as this. 'Blue Ronda a la Turk' and 'Take Five' are major highlights, complimented well by the rest of the album. You can imagine how cool a listener in 1959 might have felt playing 'Time Out' for friends. Jazz always runs the risk of seeming pretentious that way, but there's something also deeply accessible about The Dave Brubeck Quartet. At least if you're even a bit curious about the genre. It's an great introduction.
Timeless. Relevant.
made my day productive while listening.
Fav: Strange Meadow Lark Least Fav: Everybody’s Jumpin’
Not a discerning jazz listener. It’s all good to me.
Favorites were "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five"
Hard to overstate one of the most popular Jazz albums of all time. Lifted by its track Take Five, this album is smooth and enjoyable throughout. Its unclear to me if it reaches the legendary status of influence that Im looking for
Great songs. Take five is his catchy of an instrumental tune as has ever been written
My kind of Jazz. Det her ligger tæt på Kind of Blue. Det er godt
Very smooth, very influential, very good jazz album.
Take Five is a stone cold classic. Untouchable. Blue Rondo is great too but the rest of the album doesn’t quite reach to those peaks.
This was a pleasant listen on my drive to work this morning. I was a little disappointed when it started over again. I wanted a little more. Better than being too long though.
I don’t understand jazz. Feel like the musicians are so good by the time they are able to play jazz. It’s hard to differentiate what’s good. The note precision and timing is so good on this album. Like too good. Plus I saw the movie with the jazz drummer and I am too dumb to think of the name. Miles teller and the guy who played the newspaper guy in Spider-Man. For Christ’s sake what is wrong with me. My brain keeps telling me it’s drumline or rickroll neither are close. Jeez, it was a normal day, felt with it for the most part. What is happening? Anyway, that movie every one knows makes it hard for me to listen to jazz. Like watching Chinese gymnasts or any Olympic swimmer. Like you know you are watching the pinnacle of that event, but you can simultaneously see or hear all the absolute torture and sacrifice it took to get there. And the there is my monkey brain unable to even begin to appreciate just how good they really are. Though it was an unseasonably cool evening. I drove through dusk with my windows down and this album playing. That experience was enjoyable. Ill give ol’ Dave a 4 due to the idiocy of this review.
Timeless good music
Second jazz album in a row, but this one is fun, enjoyable, and has one of my favorite songs ever, Take Five!
This one is so iconic while being underrated at the same time. Take 5 & Blue Rondo get all the flowers while the rest of this set really soars in it's own right, but soaring under the radar of popular recognizability. This album really hits the spot for me, jazz-wise, with it's spatial awareness. There is a ton of room to breathe between these 4, allowing each player to explore and be heard. Not only is that accomplished, but the tone of the instrument is really allowed to be heard. Every clack of the strings in the upright bass is heard reverberating through the instrument's body. Every wire on the snare brush, when employed, is present across the microphones, dragging across the surface of the drum. Really takes you there, allows you to feel the music. It's no wonder, when hooks like Take 5's are applied, why this is such an enduring classic.
Long time fan of Take Five, loved the rest of the album.
Good stuff. This has got to be one of the best jazz albums all time. Super chill, but catchy, fades in and out. Very nice. Includes the classic track "Take Five".
Smoov
there are some places where the road keeps going, it all keeps going
imagine MY shock when i knew take five. this was groovy.
DB ate on this one. This is what Seinfeld was talkking about in Bee Movie when he said "ya like jazz?"
Oh no, I think I like Jazz. Lovely singable Melodies throughout!
Highlight: Take Five
Beautiful and charming jazz. A more low key kind of jazz too. I recognized Take Five and Kathy’s Waltz. Standouts: Strange Meadow Lark, Take Five, Kathy’s Waltz, and Pick up Sticks.
This is a pretty good jazz album
I find it difficult to write anything meaningful about jazz albums, apart from the cliche 'this is nice.' Time Out is very nice. Light, fluffy, never straying into the nervous breakdown genre of some avant garde jazz. It's very classy. It makes me want to take up smoking again.
Beautiful jazz for people who count in 7s just to feel superior.
Nice and jazzy, good for making breakfast.
A very nice collection of jazz pieces. A genre I'm not very familiar with, but I appreciate it nonetheless. It's a very pretty album, and very relaxing to boot.
Jazzy
Jazz smooth as butter! And this cool cat loved it
this is a dope jazz album. I first heard of Dave Brubeck in college during a 'History of Jazz' class which was amazing. Take Five is an AMAZING track and really glad I could listen to the rest of the album. incredible jazz album.
Sure. It's jazzy.
4 stars. Enjoyed it
Mint
White guys can do jazz sometimes
love :-)
Good
I don’t always listen to jazz but when I do it’s jazz like this
It's a great album. Entry level stuff, but classics. Some of the songs aren't as good as the others but still high praise
Vibing out to this!! So many emotions and cool sounds happening!! Loved it!!
One of my favorite jazz albums
Lovely listen. Take Five is an all time classic. It slightly fades in the latter half but that's only a minor quibble. Worthy and deserved addition in the book.
Lovely
Jazzy Jazz for the Jazzmaster Jazz-Thousand
Great
not usually a jazz listener, but this album was a very enjoyable listen. it got a bit lost on me but everything comes together nicely and can see myself coming back to this album soon.
Knew the opener. Either a jazz classic, or someone i know covered it.
Just the perfect background music. Nostalgic for me, Brad played this a lot in college.
Lepsze i gorsze. Pewnie ktoś kto bardzo lubi jazz, to wszystkie mu sie spodobaja
Perfect Sunday listening. I’ve had Take Five on playlists for years but never taken a deeper dive into Brubecks work before.
Honestly love this type of jazz. Always had a spot for Dave Brubeck.
Great jazz. The perfect length of jazz album. 38 minutes. Exactly my jazz limit. 4.4
This one I could see throwing on again.
4 ya like jazz
Nice Pretty Good to Work to Makes me feel good music. Thank You 4 stars for me
Gucci gucci.
3.75
Aw man cool jazz for squares daddio. But irresistible none the less even if they do sometimes sound like they are going for their Tricky Time Signatures scouting badge.
Very nice lightish jazz. It's pretty good and I think that I would possibly buy a copy. I have heard "Take Five" before but the other songs are pretty good too.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Blue rondo à la turk, Take five
take five is one of the most iconic jazz standards from this era. the other songs are great to.
Classic! I haven’t listened to Dave Brubeck in quite some time but as good as always! Can listen to this at any time.
I owe you an apology, Jazz, I wasn’t really familiar with your game.
It's such a fun concept, have a jazz album based around using weird time signatures, call it 'Time Out', even have some of the song titles be references to the time signature. On top of that it's just a fun listen. I maybe like my jazz a little wilder or weirder, but you can't deny the bangers on here.
YES JAZZ! Take Five is een super bekend nummer! Gaat zeker innde zomer queue! FAVO: Strange Meadow LArk, Take Five
pretty jazzy ngl
4.4 very good
cool background jazzz
Top 10 beats to cook your food to
My eldest loves jazz (and discussing polyrhythms and unusual time signatures) and we’ve listened to The Dave Brubeck Quartet together a fair bit, a few of these tracks have been heard tinkled on the keys or honked on the sax coming from his bedroom which has given me such a fondness for the album (and jazz in general which I’d never been super into before) I love talking about music and the way you can connect with people when listening to it or discussing it - it brings me so much joy to get this stage in life where my son has his own taste / ideas and shares them with me - super special. I love a random text from him with a track ‘I simply MUST listen to’.
Great example of interesting jazz
LOVED
Ideal music for having a little weed with your coffee while you make breakfast
Really liked this - nice easy Jazz listening.
Great. A couple of the songs really felt familiar, even though I don't spend much time in coffee shops.
Jazz. Somebody is hating it right now. This isn’t elevator music, though. This is classic. This is syncopated. This IS jazz. For me, it’s relaxing. I can work to it. Reduces the stress of a long day. It’s like taking a Calgon bath in my dry clothes. These guys are amazing musicians. I love Take 5 with its 5/4 time signature. Even playing music for the majority of my life, it is difficult to count the beats, never the less play them for the entirety of the song. To listen only, the ears don’t notice the complexity. Count it off, though. That’s my ASMR. Gone for over a decade, Mr. Brubeck and his band made music that will last forever.
Jazz classic, superb album
-this feels like Disney’s fantasia but for adults who like Jazz -Oooooooooo this is where that’s from (take five) -just a real good jazz album
I never thought I'd say this but this jazz album is a certified slapper. I knew this album going into listen- my old roommate played this constantly in March of 2020 so I associate it with a lot of sitting around and looking at the Apple Music visualizer while getting crossed and pretending like I don't exist. On a more sober listen though there is a lot going on here that I didn't appreciate about it before. I really like the weird time scores and how off beat any individual instrument can sound while still making a really coherent song. This is kind of like the album equivalent of those pictures you have to cross your eyes up to see. Focus on any one part and you start to lose the music is actually trying to do. All respect in the world to these musicians.
First half was incredible! Fell off a bit at the end
Nice to have true jazz album, but I’m more of a horn guy, not main piano and drums. But either way a good one for a Friday.
Lovely 60s jazz, fine background/dinner music and then the iconic Take Five.
I took a walk while listening to this album because I thought it’d be relaxing and it very much was. I knew the two very famous songs and the rest I quickly found I enjoyed. Never did I think I would rate this time of album so high but very pleased!
I have been waiting for this. Jazz. 2 genres people pick out, the classic "I'd listen to anything except country and jazz". I love country, but I have never really tried Jazz only in small doses and while I would say it isn't a genre that I am going to be raving about I strangely really enjoy it. Now I have heard of Dave Brubeck and this is some pretty stereotypical Jazz. But it is on this list for a reason. Maybe I got the album at the right time as I have been listening to lots of jazz lobby music, or more modern iterations of dark jazz like Portishead but this genuinely was really nice. I think it would be a go to and I would listen to it again if I was in the mood. I am just not sure how often I really would want to. I actually listened to this album while playing Cod Zombies and there was something bliss about going through rounds of zombies while jamming to this calm Jazz compared to the usual heavy music. It is just fun and intriguing genuinely to hear the time signatures and different ways to play the instruments. I don't know if other people rate this, maybe because it is generic Jazz it is not as admired but it is on the list so someone must like it. I am actually worries that this could be as good as Jazz gets and I will like the genre more but realise I rated this low. So I am going to be rash, maybe I wouldn't listen to it more then some more standard genres and albums. But in relation to a genre I am not particularly fond of, this is exactly what I would listen to it for, and for that reason I am giving it a 4. I also love that I really do have some stand out songs, I think I already knew Take Five and clearly for good reason but there were others. Stand Out Songs: Strange Meadow Lark Take Five Kathy's Waltz
Loved this album!
Wow, a jazz album I actually own--I think it's just 2--this one is iconic and an easy listen. I would go 4.5 here, but actually knocking it down to 4 due to how my attention span wavers toward the end.
It's the best Jazz album I've ever sat down and listened to! I certainly recognized "Take Five" and observed an interesting sequence of notes in "Kathy's Waltz" that reminded me of All My Loving by the Beatles.
Oof. Love it, but it was one of my Dad’s all-time favorites and I can’t hear it without missing him terribly. Same goes for Vince Guaraldi. Time Out is timeless & time traveling - Take Five transports me with those drums (oft imitated since) with Dave’s piano starting up, it gives me goosebumps.
Famous jazz
Very good!!!
4/5 - excellent, made me deep clean my entire bathroom because I felt like it
Tu, tududu tududu
tres bien
Love it. 4
listened to again one of the greatest jazz records of all time
This is one of the most popular and accessible jazz albums of all time. The tunes are catchy, even if the odd time signatures sometimes make it hard to tap your feet. It doesn't completely pander to a mainstream audience, but it is hardly the most challenging jazz record ever made. It's likeability, success, cultural longevity and ubiquity earns it a place on this list, even if it does give the uncomfortable impression that jazz is largely played by white guys. It is an easy jazz album to listen to, even for people who don't really like jazz.
Truly one of the great jazz records out there. Lovely playing throughout though the album is a bit front heavy, but still all the songs are quality
Iniciación al jazz. genial
This is good, accessible jazz. I do feel like I'm missing something because I don't know music theory and can't recognize time signatures, but Dave Brubeck and crew make this easy to listen to. The saxophone is a standout, the piano supports it just so, and the percussion keeps everything moving. Take Five is my favorite jazz tune ever. I liked hearing the other music on this album.
The perfect blend of jazz for a beginner to waltz into. Easy listening although complex arrangements.
This is some timeless music for me. Take 5 stands out as it's the one I've most heard. But the full album is solid, and engaging.
Opening track is among the all time greatest openers. Smooth, fluid ideas that flow from one song to the next. Who knew more classical instruments could be so emotive?
Лучшая песня - Take Five.
På riktigt. Riktigt skönt. Jag njöt. Otroligt behaglig musik.
It's good
Classic Dave.
Peters out a little in the second half, but still a relentlessly enjoyable, experimental, and exciting listen.
I would never claim to be a huge jazz fan but I have always had an appreciation. Blame it on Ms. Valdez from junior high or Mr. Steven’s from high school. The DBQ has always been an easy-listening album of songs written by talented musicians dedicated to the craft. I can’t think of how many movies have used Strange Meadow Lark or the most famous Take Five, which I just watched in the John Cusack movie Serendipity. Reasonable so, they are my two standouts from this album too. Jazz isn’t my first go-to, but I could definitely listen to this album again and again.
really liked it! love jazz
Some famous jazz! It’s amazing the abilities of these 4 musician!
I feel that if Jazz is divided broadly into two categories - then this album represents the easy listening jazz as opposed to the dark clubs, dope smoking, jazz. Still quite pleasant to listen to
Smooth sounding classic jazz album (at least to my ears), much of this is quite familiar. I'm guessing this was pretty unusual stuff 65 years ago. I really quite like this, but I doubt it's something I'd play frequently.
D'ya like jazz? Why yes, yes I do, and I really liked this album.
Multiple great songs on this album that have become essentially "soundtrack music." Some solid, old school dinner party jazz.
Sehr alt, jazzig, zumindest 1 Superhit, LaLa Land vibes
Liked the last Songz the rest was fine
Classic old jazz record
This goes unreasonably hard. Take five absolutely snaps on em.
Erstaunlich guter Jazz
Solid album. About as classic a jazz standard as you can get.
First song is an absolute banger, as is Take Five
Album Already Known: N # Songs Already Known: 0 # Songs Saved: 1 - Take Five Notes: - great to listen to while working - i always like listening to jazz but i don't like saving instrumental jazz songs in my liked songs because i don't love them coming up randomly on shuffle - Blue Rondo good first song to get ya really goin
Already listened lmao. Banger tho
The most iconic song in 5/4 to ever exist along with an intro course to odd time signatures. This shit slaps, just some good jazz
Easy going relaxing jazz. The melodies and solos flit playfully around the rhythms where the beats never hit quite when you'd expect, the distinctive time signatures keep everything slightly and delightfully off kilter.
Banger of a jazz album
I think this is the first time that I've gotten a jazz album on here and I've actually recognized a song. "Take Five" is famous enough that I recognized it from one of the jazz playlists that I listen to in the background sometimes. I'm no jazz expert, but I enjoyed this a lot. It sounds fairly unique, and I couldn't quite place it on my own but after reading a bit about it I think it's probably that most of the songs were written in some non-standard time signatures ("Take Five" is in 5/4 time). It also just has this nice fairly calming vibe throughout (even when the pace is a little more frantic like the first song). This seems to be considered "cool" jazz from what I'm reading, so that checks out. A few more fun things I learned about this one. "Take Five" was the first jazz single to sell a million copies, and is the biggest selling jazz song of all time. Brubeck originally wanted to be a veterinarian, got told by a professor that he wasn't into it enough and should switch to music (his whole family was basically musicians), and then he almost got kicked out of music school for not being able to sight-read music. Then he got drafted into the Army during WWII, got out of combat service after volunteering to play piano at a Red Cross show, and then formed the first racially integrated armed forces band. He was a strong proponent of racial integration throughout his life, and often cancelled shows when they weren't going going to allow black musicians to perform. He also became a Catholic later in his life, and won Notre Dame's Laetare Medal in 2006. Favorite song: Take Five Other: Blue Rondo a la Turk, Strange Meadow Lark, Three to Get Ready, Kathy's Waltz 2/12/14
Don't listen to alot of classical but this was good
Nice !!
I am going to have to listen to this album again. It was so peaceful having it on but not giving it much thought. It wasn’t until after I finished that I read the biography of the album and found that the theme is odd time signatures and polyrhythms. That’s also when I learned that the infamous “Take 5” is called that because it is in 5/4 time. I love odd time signatures and use of polyrhythms, and for me to listen to the whole album idly without noticing it speaks volumes to how this band could create unique music that is so easy to listen to.
Fast bissie kurz, aber Klasse. Take five sowieso. Und der Drummer!
What a pleasant album. I had one of the best commutes to work listening to this. I'm starting to enjoy more jazz albums. I don't know if my music tastes are changing, or if I'm listening to actually good jazz now. It could also be that I just recently watched Whiplash. Definitely a couple of riffs I recognize in here. Blue Rondo A La Turk is playing during the football scene in Wedding Crashers.
Great jazz! Loved it!
Take Five takes Four Best Song: Strange Meadow Lark Worst Song: N/A
The rhythm can be just as prominent as the melodies.
Favorite Tracks: Take Five Blue Rondo à La Turk
It was soothing and I enjoyed it.
Love me some Jazz, banging tracks.
idk anything about jazz but i kinda dig it
Felt like I was watching a 'silent' Peanuts cartoon. Or I was sitting in a swanky lounge sipping on an old fashioned, complaining about how my investments ain't doin' so hot lately. Overall, I enjoyed it. Good background music.
Very relaxing! Great music to lean back and enjoy a glass of wine.
Fantastic for a Jazz record. The instrumentals are absolutely stellar and the emotion of each song shines through. Standouts were tracks 1, 3, and 5
Really solid jazz album. There is a reason Take Five has been played and used so many times. I’m not sure if I like the way the bass strings vibrate on Everybody's Jumpin’. The various time signatures are cool. My favorite songs are Take Five and Three To Get Ready.
Love this its the perfect background music.
One of the greats.
fun jazz to listen on background
FUCKING JAZZ TIME LETS FUCKING FGO i loved this so much damn
Lekkere werkmuziek.
classic jazz
All jazz shit gets atleast 4 stars.
I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to jazz, but I know the significance of this record. I purchased a Canadian first press of "Jazz goes to College" for a dollar but haven't had a chance to listen. As I get older I am looking for new musical experiences that I have yet to discover. This record was one of those experiences. The musicianship is superb. A very enjoyable listen.
I really enjoyed this
Take Five is in my personal Top20. I believe this album is considered by many, who have a vast wealth of musical knowledge, to be one of the best jazz records of all-time!
Nice, laid back jazz album.
ANOTHER MCMOTHERFUCKIN JAZZ ALBUM BAYBEE. I don’t what to say, I just love jazz, and it loves me. Very chill, warm, and playful. Kinda like listening to the Monster’s Inc soundtrack, and you’re just waiting for Mike Wizowski to jump in doing his best Frank Sinatra impression. Overall, can’t go wrong with it. Favorite song: Take Five
Great classic jazz, with a 60's vibe. Jazz fans will love this one.
Really enjoyed this, will definitely play again and again.
Thoughts before listening: I know this is a jazz classic with a timeless track in"Take Five", but I have never listened all the way through. My (largely uninformed) assumption has always been that this is pop jazz for the masses...but the inclusion on so many greatest albums lists means that it must be well respected. I look forward to hearing this in full. Review: Wow...this is such a classic sound. This is one of those albums where you recognize a bunch of the songs without actually knowing who's playing. They're just that much ingrained in our lives. They're consistently played while you walk through the airport or eat at a restaurant or in the background of a TV show. This album has 2 of those songs in "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk". What you also don't tend to notice when hearing something like Dave Brubeck as background music is the level of complexity in these songs. There are wonderful melodies here but also some highly technical musicianship on display. This is far from muzak. Very interesting album that I'm giving 4-stars.
Not bad.
Jazz: it's not about the notes you play, but rather the ones you don't play, and they did an excellent job of that with this album
very good record
Beautiful
Light 4 I loved the horns on Strange Meadow Lark this was an enjoyable listen
Recognized one song I'm the album. Definitely something I would listen to while falling asleep. It's comforting. 8/10
It is based upon the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz such as 9/8, 6/4 and 5/4. 4.3
Well put together jazz tracks. This can be chill, romantic, or great mood relaxer.
this is what i think of when people say jazz - super complex at times but also laid back, really cohesive album. favourite song was take five because it just had to be!
Ok I recognize Take Five Just didn’t realize the context. Listening during my lunch break and the afternoon part of my shift at the Phillies Stadium. Good music to work to it’s driving but relaxed.
Its jazz and very timeless jazz at that. it's just lacking a bit of oomph, a bit of melodic storytelling for it to be a 5
I recognized the track, "Take Five" as soon as it started, but I didn't specifically recall hearing any of the rest. This was nice, and I'm sure I'll come back to it again!
I am familiar with this album by name only. This will be a first time listen. I have heard the song Take Five plenty of times, just not the rest. The drum section in Take Five is a masterpiece of frustration and beauty.
Take Five was my fave. I didn't feel the first couple of songs but bangers after that
Take five is one of the most amazing pieces of music to ever exist
I went all in and lost everything :(
Easy listening but not bad
Ah one of the twenty or so jazz albums that make this list - a typical 'jazz for non-jazzers' along with Kind of Blue, Blue Train, Ah Um etc. etc. It's an excellent album, his blocky piano playing really shines through.
4.5/5. I know a lot more about jazz than I thought I did, quite a few recognizable melodies on this record.
