Klassikko syystä. On tämä hyvä.

Known quantity. Interesting jazz

Classic

12/6…ok for jazz

Jazz session. Un 4.

Comments: Solid jazz album! Favorite tracks: Blue Rondo A la Turk, Strange Meadow Lark, Take Five Rating: 4/5

I really like this album. I could definitely see playing this in the background regularly.

Take Five alone is worth giving the whole album a listen.

Quality album. Great background and chilled listen. Take Five is an excellent track

Now we're talking.

Enjoyed this. Not quite as much as previous classic jazz records but for something from the 50s this still rips pretty good.

Beautiful music. Lively, interesting and pretty. Enjoyed it.

Good stuff!

A fine jazz album.

A fun and zippy bit of jazz.

Take Five is a classic jam, and the rest of it is also great.

Classic. Listenable rather than noodling which is the kind of jazz I like

Classic

Different to usual but very good

8/10. I like jazz

Easy listening jazz at it's best

loved so much, amazing morning listen

Yeah, classic, love it!

pretty cool. I wonder if this was new in 1959? Seems like pretty cool but not amazing jazz, but given the time maybe more profound? Pretty sweet regardless.

Chill, relaxing album. After listening to this album, it made me want to dig deeper and listen to more jazz. Looking forward to listening to this album on a cold, rainy day.

Perfect representation of tight jazz. Nice, bright and lively.

Very into this album. Damn. That was good.

Such a huge difference between an album with ideas, written and recorded by actual musicians vs some shlock made in a shed. Its a nice, classy, jazz album, which I think warrants at least a couple of more listens to appreciate it more. Just for myself, Im going to leave a note of album totals: Significant albums 10/25. Albums I liked 4/25. Albums I have added to my library 1/25 (maybe Ill add REM and Chicago after a couple relistens. This one: significant, liked, maybe add later.

Rating: 8.5/10 Great jazz album. Normally I don't like jazz, but this was fun to listen to. Loved the use of odd signatures, the best songs highly benefitted from this. Also loved the tone of the instruments and production, the saxophone, piano and drums sounded fantastic on this album. It does get a bit one-note towards the end of the album, but still a great listen from start to finish. Also loved the chill vibes from this one, will definitely return to this album. Favorite songs: Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five. Worst song: Pick Up Sticks, not bad but feels a little redundant.

Not my normal genre of music, so was pleasantly survived by how good this was. Pleasant listen!

- Honestly really enjoyable smooth jazz this was great - Perfect chill dinner music

Excellent jazz instrumentals, every track is unique and beautiful

I don’t have much to say about this album except that it was a nice 40 minutes of smooth, peaceful jazz. Take five was the only real standout since I’ve heard that in different places but never really knew its origin. Plus it’s the most fun of all the tracks.

Jazz me up daddy

Very nice. I was in the studio working for about 8 hours just listening to this on repeat while I worked. Very easy listening, every once in a while I’d stop to think about the song and just listen to the different time signatures fighting with each other but still having a sense of harmony. Not something I’d listen to in the car or anything, but definitely something to put on while working. I found myself looking up who sampled these songs multiple times. I’m convinced that there are a lot of parts of this album that were sampled unofficially, because throughout the whole album I hear familiar riffs but can’t figure out where I’d heard it before.

HS Jazz Band groupie, what's not to love with a classic like this?

I guess this is what the Peanuts listen to when they grow up

It's the kind of songs you know but never knew the name off. Take 5 stayed in my head for a week

Really fun album. This is the kind of jazz I like. Not much more to say, except I kind of wish the ending was better. It just sort of faded out, with not much fanfare. Guess that’s to be expected from this album, though, so can’t be too mad about that. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Strange Meadow Lark 2. Blue Rondo à la Turk 3. Take Five

Oeps, 1 nummer maar geluisterd. Dat was fijn! Collega zei: dat is een heel nice album! En dat vond ik ook want jazz.

An album I have on vinyl, and listened to many times, it's a brilliant piece of work.

Some excellent, experimental jazz. Flew by. Knew Take Five and Blue Rondo a la Turk already. Thanks Dave.

Blue rondo a la turk 9 Strange meadow larke 8.3 Take five 9 Three to get ready 9.2 Kathy's waltz 8.9 Eveybody's jumpin 8.7 Pick up sticks 8.8 Excellent, I'm sure I'll hear something new every time I listen. 4 stars.

This is a classic jazz album with some tremendously influential and prominent jazz standards. It's not necessarily my favorite jazz album ever, but it's still essential and steady. Standout tracks: Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five 4/5

Jazzed my pants lmao

Not my genre, but I really enjoyed Rondo and Take Five

This is some above average jazz. 4/5

Absolute classic. I think I listened to this a lot in my late teenage years. It was on the right side of the listenable spectrum in my step-dad's collection of jazz CD's. All good, solid jazz. I held back from giving it 5 stars as it's a little cliche now, and more cafe background music than smoky jazz dive with clicking fingers and goatees.

Heard this before, enjoyed it. Re-listening now, still a great album for a lazy Sunday morning. Take Five is so familiar, remains etched in your mind for all time.

very Good, I love the unpredictability of the beat and how the piano and sax play hand in hand

pretty cool

An innovative breakthrough and produced some all time classic riffs and sounds. Quite a delightful record, and easy to enjoy. Three and a half. Fave track: Blue Rondo a la Turk

This is great. Beautiful vibes

There are definitely some jams here, Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take 5 definitely stand out. My rating might go up with more listens, but for now this feels like a very solid 4.

Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five rule so hard

Yes! This is an album you just want the blood in your veins to absorb. From the rolling snare to the raindrop crashes on the cymbals. This album can easily be the theme music to your daily life. Brubeck and company definitely filled in all gaps that could be filled in creating this track. Sit back and enjoy. 4

Hell of a vibe while cooking spaghetti and meatballs. Nice music to listen to when you have a headache.

I think this is the first jazz album I've ever listened to. For some reason 'Take Five' sounds familiar.

Jazz classic. Definitely responsible for dozens of white guys getting laid in the 60’s.

Its was good jazz paved the way for a lot of music

Pretty cool listening to some of these classic songs in a non-commercial setting. I've never heard the disjointed drum solo in the middle of "Take Five", for example. Moments like that pull it down from a 5 but it's still a great album.

Wow, not expecting to enjoy that! I’m listened to it repeatedly while making dinner and it set the mood perfectly. Super impressive what they could do with timing and instruments and how the songs really seemed to tell a story. Listen again: probably Purchase for my collection: if I came across it Favourite Song: Blue Rondo Al La Turk

This album makes me feel like I’m a cool 1950’s detective driving about LA in the rain. My coffee and cigarette being rudely interrupted by a femme fatale walking into the diner. Or when you are playing Grand Theft Auto, steal a car and the jazz station is on and you’re too busy escaping the police to change the channel. I’ve heard Take Five a million times before but never knew what it was called. Cool vibe.

loved it. made me feel like i was in a jazz club in the 40s drinkin a latte with a baddie next to me

Classic

classic

The use of unusual time signatures make this one a super fun, engaging listen. Favorite tracks: "Time Out", "Blue Rondo a la Turk", "Everybody's Jumpin'"

I'm not a jazz person, so I don't really get it, but this was fun to listen to.

Lovely, delightful. Musicians more into the nature of music than expressing themselves.

The classic Dave album, including my old favorite 'Take Five'. Only 7 songs, so not too much jazz in one sitting!

This is the vanilla ice cream of jazz.

Really enjoyable mix of mellow and sizzling tracks

Enjoyed this a lot.

really nice jazz, sounds complicated tbh 8.5/10

Wonderful album filled with timeless jazz classics. "Take Five" is of course the most well-known, but I bet you'll be surprised how many of these you'll recognize

I am not a jazz aficionado and probably don't have good taste in what is good jazz and what is not good jazz. I found this to be very pleasant music, and though I may not listen to this album very often, Brubeck and his quartet are so tight in their playing.

Brilliant album, the kind of jazz I like! Very mellow, laid back. It takes a lot of interesting turns and movements. And it features one of the best drummers in the genre! Great album to relax with. 8 out of 10

I'm not a fan of jazz in general, but this was pleasant to hear. Not much of it stuck with me, though I do appreciate the listen and I enjoyed my time with it.

Classic, enjoyed it. Only really new the classic "take 5" but enjoyed the rest too.

Very smooth jazz. Excellent musicianship with very thoughtful arrangements; no instrument is aggressively stealing the light but when they do their own thing the music shines. Each song is wonderful, with the initial tracks having a faster beat, subsiding to swinging percussion lead tracks that have wonderful key accompaniment and that sax is saxin. Enjoy with a glass of wine on high fidelity headset!

Good jazz

Jazz is not the preferred music of this reviewer, but nevertheless to this project one must remain true. Unlike some of the other jazz encountered on this journey, this album contains soulful melodies, sensical drumming, and more enjoyability than the super technical show-off albums that were likely not produced for this listener. Those get the respect they deserve, as does this one, but where this one does better is that it has an accessible vibe. The invitation to relax and let the music do the rest is clear and enticing. It then delivers. Jazz music makes a lot of promises in the vein of "trust me the music is good" and while the collective brains of humans can trust that on a superficial level, jazz might be the only genre where a person can truly appreciate it for what it is, but finds listening to it to be a repulsive experience. Except here, this album carries with it a playful tone where perhaps the quartet was content in each other's company, and this album exudes a certain sense of humility where it truly wants the listener to enjoy it but will not be offended if they do not.

Jazz classic.

I have a friend who loves Dave Brubeck, so I was really excited to be assigned this album. However, I've never listened to much jazz before, so this album was probably lost on me for the most part. I did enjoy listening to it, but I can't really offer any deep insights as to why I liked it. I've found all of the jazz albums on this list very pleasant and enjoyable to listen to, and this was no different.

Great jazz!

I quite liked this one. I think I would probably listen again, and the cover is fab

Certainly one of my favorite jazz records on the list.

I was surprised with how familiar I was with several of these tunes. Probably a combination of hearing them as a kid, having some friends in my mid 20's that were huge jazz buffs, and their appearance in various other forms of pop media over the decades. Some of these tunes remind me of some of the modal jazz artists on this list that I have liked; apparently modal comes from this style (cool jazz), so that makes sense. Gonna have to find more Brubek now.

Very good one. I had listened to this fairly recently for the /mu/ list. 4/5

Really not good at writing about jazz. I love it, but I can’t exactly articulate what works or doesn’t work for me. I’ve always liked this album and think it’s upper tier, but might miss my top 5. Not sure what else to say. A-

Nokkur meistaraverk þarna!

Awesome!

Nice jazz

Makes me want to listen on repeat

what an absolutely pleasant and easy going album! upon reflection, with the various jazz albums on this list, i understand why the dave brubeck quartet's time out was included. among the instruments, the piano and the saxophone stood out the most. the sax could be so beautiful, like nothing could ever top it, and then the piano charmingly shimmies into the song. not mad about this delightful album one bit.

Thanks to the guy first introduces me to this band

A ton of classics on this one...great easy listening music. 3.5/5

Finger snapping toe tapping Jazz start to finish.

Very easy listening.

This was good and easy to get into

Cool Jazz. Take Five is a classic. Hard to not like this if you like jazz.

Love blue rondo, but sometimes the jazz is a bit too slow for me. Cool jazz.

Classic bop with some timeless tunes.

Very good jazz album! A couple of songs that are classics for a reason. I love all of the influences you can hear, and I challenge you to listen to this if you think that jazz is boring.

Jazz legend Dave Brubeck and his quartet - nothing surprising, but always great to listen to.

Amazing jazz album

Classic Cool Jazz album from the 1950s, very smooth and pleasant compositions with unusual time signatures. Take Five is obviously the most well known song on the album but the other songs are also great. It was a fun listen.

Classic. Brilliant. I’m not a jazz fan but this is the best.

just some classic cool jazz. props to Dave for using weird time signatures. you already know the highlight.

A jazzy classic for a reason the backbone of this has to be the iconic Take Five. I think everyone at some point in their lives has heard that track. If you haven’t then you should. It’s a peak example of 1950s jazz.

A great Cool Jazz album. I'd only listened to Take Five before, but now I can see why this work is on the list. Great tunes, not tedious songs. It keeps it cool. Great album!

I forgot how much I enjoy jazz

Take Five is such a great song!

Not usually going out of my way to listen to jazz but it's always good to hear such influential music. The usage of different time signatures is really neat. The opener, Blue Rondo à la Turk, has some of the more interesting bits for me and is the highlight of the album for me. Strange Meadow Lark is super chilled out, the kind of music you listen next to a fireplace with a robe and a glass of bourbon while it rains outside. I have DEFINITELY heard Take Five somewhere before. Such a smooth piece, I can see why it's seen as massively influential in the history of music. Excellent solo work by Paul Desmond on the saxophone and Joe Morello on the drums.

many memorable songs

Interesting but a bit too different to my tastes for me to come back to.

Not all the tracks on this are equally brilliant, but it's a great album nonetheless.

Very enjoyable jazz album. I was always a big fan of the Peanuts soundtrack so this reminds me of it. Definitely will explore more of this group.

Very nice.

Catchy, melodic, well performed. Very accessible yet enjoyable music.

I like this album

It's good. But is it really jazz?

The first song and Take Five are both fantastic and, while there is interesting stuff going on elsewhere, it doesn’t quite reach those heights again. It’s also a relatively emotionless project - there isn’t any passion or intensity in a lot of the playing, which makes it difficult to feel too strongly about it. Now the negatives are out of the way: it’s a very fun album. The concept is simple but executed perfectly, and the complex time signatures sound natural in the context of the songs rather than just feeling like they’re irregular for the sake of it

Needed this for Friday. A friend had passed and this was from his timeline... Appreciated jazz so he did. Goodnight Bunkey. May the Angels of Jazz play thee to thy rest

OK, look. I can barely keep common time. I don't know what the fuck a mode is or why a song becomes a standard. What I do know is that these guys sound damn cool on this recording. The melodies are pretty and the compositions are vaguely classical to my ear. It's nice. I like it.

Not sure if this is considered the ultimate jazz album or not. Well it’s gotta be close. Great vibe and chill listening. Hard to add just one to the playlist because it’s amazing as a whole, but will add “Take Five.” Great album, solid 4!

Good jazz

Oye, este disco estuvo muy bueno

Classique

Take five carina Resto buon Album di jazz d’ambiente

Classic jazz, as pure jazz as it gets

East listening

Really enjoyed. Uplifting and nice to have on in the background.

I really just love jazz and this is some of the best I’ve heard in a while. It’s like NPR jazz hour but in my living room.

Very easy to slide into and move to the beat. Strong, flowing rhythm. Overall this album is fun, light, smooth, and perfect for chilling out and being calm.

dave brubeck doesn't miss, also take 5 is an all-time classic.

Very good music just not something I’d listen to

The 2nd Jazz album I ever listened to in full (Kind of Blue was first), this is an undeniable classic and while it has become considered more traditional, Side A of this record is untouchable in its quality. After having listened to a lot of jazz since I first heard it, Side B is a bit more pedestrian and didn't hold my attention the same way as the first 3 tracks. As to import and influence, this gets a 5, but for this exercise of my enjoyment and listenability, I'm docking the score slightly for Side B. But 4.5 is still damn good.

I am a newbie when it comes to jazz and I realize that the albums I like in the genre tend to lean more towards vocal jazz as I'm usually a lyric person. But not knowing much about how groundbreaking this was in its time, I like this; it makes me feel a bit like I'm in a fancy hotel in a Christmas movie. ...Also I think the upright bass might be my favorite instrument. Out of context and historical significance I'd give this a 3.5/5.

One of my go-to jazz albums. Excellent, but just falls short of five stars.

Brubeck is one of those artists that you either really like, or can't stand. Either way, he loves his oddball time signatures.

Fav song: Take Five

Just easy listening smooth jazz. Makes me wish I were sitting back with a cocktail.

I really enjoyed how catchy this was for jazz. The play on time signatures while having the repetitive motifs made it far more engaging for jazz for someone not as familiar with the genre.

Pretty nice sounding jazz album. Maybe I just like it cuz Im not much into jazz yet tho

Još jedan jako kvalitetan jazz album iz '59. <3

Fun, lax and iconic jazz.

Completely approachable, dynamic, timeless

Je connais pas beaucoup de chansons de jazz, et là-dessus y'en avait 2 que je connais bien!

No surprise that it became commercially successful. Not because it employed unconventional time signatures but because it is a jazz album that knows how to weave pleasing tunes. Chill, easy to digest, and complex, it's another jazz album that I genuinely like.

Nice 4/5

Love it

Not a big fan of Jazz, but this album was actually quite good. 4/5

Classics

Turns out I think I like jazz! This was great

A classic in the jazz genre. This album has some great songs and is enjoyable. Take five is a classic jazz song. I’m not the most well versed in jazz technical terms but this album seems to be a cut above and different than some typical jazz band albums. 8.0/10

Did you know that it's called Take Five because it's in 5/4

Een heel rustgevend jazzalbum.

credits aan dries voor take five

The first huge commercial success of jazz music in the 50s and also one of the most innovative albums of that period.

Chill jazz

light jazz...its nice.

Some seminal cool Jazz from Dave and his mates, mixed up with a bunch of funky time signatures. Goes perfectly with an early morning coffee or a late night wee dram. However, I still have PTSD from having to play ‘Take Five’ for my grade 5 Alto Saxophone exam…

Not the best album to try and work to but a great album for the morning while you’re eating cereal and attempting a crossword. Even better if the cereal is jazz-appropriate e.g bran flakes or muesli. Probably doesn’t pair well with coco pops.

Surprisingly good, I'm not a jazz person normally but this album was pleasant to listen to. Rondo... and Take 5 are both great tracks

Day 6. October 29th. Really nice. Enjoying the odd time signatures. This might be the first jazz album I've gotten through while still being entertained all throughout. Will be a repeat listen.

very cool very smooth

Really enjoyed it

Not available to listen to so rated on knowledge of GSH's work.

i liked it!!

Although I don't know anything about music theory, I definitely noticed the"odd" times signatures of this album, that gave it that distinctive, neo-classical sound, that I really liked.

It’s good. Like it was made in the 50s and it’s jazz. But it’s not my type of music. Something I would occasionally listen to if I feel like it.

First track was insane. Want to take a lot from it. Take Five obv a classic

Timeless classic.

Jazz is hard to judge when you're not that into it. But this is pretty good.

this is good.

Take 5 is such a great tune. Pick up sticks is super cool. I love the bass ostinato that repeats through out. Kinda of a hypnotic feeling loop after awhile. Brubeck does some really cool rhythmic stuff in his solo.

good jazz album. Take five and blue rondo are classics. I love Paul desmonds playing, they get into some cool grooves 3.5

Take Five I knew, the rest are similarly excellent. Great alto sax tone, groovy album!

great old time jazz that actually carries themes throughout most of the piece.

3.5 / 5

Very good jazz album, it was a nice listen... Nothing out of the ordinary but still really solid! Would need more listen to truly grade I guess but I loved the listen session so 4/5

album de qualité

Some would say this an entry level jazz album. A lot of cool moments

1959. Take Five, Blue Rondo à la Turk

I thought this was already in my record collection and was mad at myself when I realized I didn’t.

everybody taking everything for a walk and i'm just sitting here enjoying it Jazzmatazz

I didn't realize how many iconic Jazz songs were all on this same album. It's not Miles Davis or John Coltrane but this is a great jazz album. Very enjoyable stuff

Overall I'm not really a big Jazz fan, but this was a very enjoyable album. I had heard a couple of the songs before (Take Five, Blue Rondo) but I certainly couldn't have named them or who the artist was. I would listen to this in the background, or perhaps play it at a cocktail party.

Nice music to wake up to. Don’t have many reference points here but these are obviously skilled musicians.

Great jazz - enjoyed it.

Just classic and vintage. The playing is so good and the odd time signatures (which have been overemphasized) simply don't get in the way of anyone's pleasure.

Loved it! Great instrumental Jazz.

I was groovin’

Super skilled by most musicians in this album. Makes me wanna watch Whiplash. No lyrics which could piss people off but if you like fluidly and musicians playing off each other this album is for you.

Just a joy to listen to The quartet creates such full and vibrant music The instruments interact in such a fun way The reediness of the sax is perfect Blue Rondo a la Turk builds to a beautiful climax for an awesome start to the album It's nearly impossible to count time for any of these songs without a guide I had to play Take 5 in high school band and never thought about it again until today I couldn't play it like Paul Desmond tho

A strong jazz album. Unusual time signatures. Sparse bright production. Happy summery tunes.. Take Five and Blue Rondo are ace.. Hard to go wrong really.

I enjoyed this. I listened to it this morning on my drive to work, thinking about how pleasing it is to the senses. This album is comfy, if that makes sense. I really don’t listen to a lot of jazz so I’m not sure if I’d listen to this again, but it was extremely pleasant today.

Jazz is hit and miss with me. Some of it is enjoyably thematic and evocative (Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and Teddy Wilson's "Jungle Love" spring to mind), some of it is meandering, and some is just plan abstract. I prefer the former to the latter two. Unfortunately for me, Brubek's "Time Out" leans toward the meandering. "Take Five" is rightfully a classic, and "Kathy's Waltz" had a jaunty energy that I enjoyed, but the rest of the album just doesn't push my buttons. That said, the talent displayed on the album is undeniable, and I can't bring myself to give it any less than four stars, despite my personal jazz proclivities.

Some nice smooth jazz. This is always a pleasure to listen to.

I'm not a jazz guy by any means (unless you count my obsession with watching old episodes of the Colgate Comedy Hour with legends such as Paul Bufano, Tiny "Boop Squigg" Shorterly, and Roy Donk) but I really liked this. I was expecting something much less listenable, but this was sort of a cosmic gumbo that moved to the beat of jazz. 4 stars.

You know, I normally reject saxophones, but the saxophone was so gently played. I was not only able to listen with ease, surely helped by the lush and light supporting band, but also felt a story from it. What art in volume! I was also relieved to experience something other than rock

The music apple for itself.

Listened to on 8/1/22 4/5 Favorite song: Kathy’s Waltz I love instrumental music and this quartet did not disappoint. The music was easy to listen to but not boring and was a wonderful work accompaniment

Ääääääääääääääääälskar jizz

Really good

A funny album. Lots of unusual odd time signatures that show that a song doesn't necessarily have to be in 4/4. (8/10) FT: Blue Rondo à la Turk, Take Five

Great 1st track

Smooooooooth. Niiice! Grrrreat Schmoking! Mmmm, nice. Wonderful! Suuuuuperb.

This is jazz music I really like, great music to work to. Blue Rondo and Take Five are bangers as well.

Without Take Five no one would have ever heard of David Brubeck, and it's the only song on the album not written by him - Paul Desmond created the famous melody only to set up a drum solo. It's easy to see why critics panned the LP - it doesn't swing with it's weird tempo and sounds very European for a West Coast group. Brubeck's piano playing can be a bit clunky at times but Paul Desmond's alto brings it all together nicely. The overall sound is pretty cool and the fact that the LP contains the most recognizable jazz song of all times is worth a bonus point.

I think the single Take Five was the song that first got me into Jazz, many years ago. This is one of my favourite jazz albums and is arguably one of the most influential ever, its right up there with Kind of Blue and Giant Steps. Incorporating some unusual time signatures and crack playing by Brubeck, Desmond and Morello it has really stood the test of time and it still sounds fresh today.

A thoroughly enjoyable and accessible classic jazz album from the incredible late 1950s era. Particularly notable for its technical experimentation whilst maintaining a melodious and “popular” feel. Brilliant!

A pretty flawless record. Very enjoyable and easy to listen to, though has enough variation to keep it interesting and the listener engaged. Definitely a good jazz trip.

backgroubd music

A lesson in humility for me. I was ready to pan this album on the first track (be be be dodedo, tooot , bebadap bob - well that's what is sounded like to me) Second track caught my attention and then the famous third - Take That Landed up enjoying all of it. Not my go to, but will go back

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be (not usually a fan of 50s jazz of this sort, but maybe I've made too quick a judgement!) and I may well explore more. And I really like the album cover.

Exactly what I expected it to be. Great album to start a morning off.

Very cool, I sent a link to my kiddo when I saw the mention about time signatures and they really enjoyed the album too. Time Out is such a classic and Blue Rondo à la Turk really kicks it off nicely.

No idea how to review jazz. But this very a very nice listen throughout. Very easy listening.

Jazz that has weird time signatures and goes all over the place yet it is accessible - and some of the tunes are smooth. Best Tracks: Blue Rondo A La Turk; Strange Meadow Lark; Take Five

Some nice easy-listening jazz. Title track is really nice. Also like Three to Get Ready

I actually enjoyed this quite a lot. The type of soothing music I needed at the end of a long day.

Added to jazz playlist

Vooral jazz behoorlijk goed te pruimen. Wel gekke namen hebben de liedjes, zoals ‘blue rondo a la Turk’

Very peppy- good jazz

Excellent

Freaky time signature fun with more familiar melodies than you'd initially realise. Huge, ground-breaking, accessible, creative, almost classical.

I thought I hated jazz

Super melodic and perfectly executed white man nerd jazz. Not the real deal, but still enjoyable when you want some safe jazz.

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet (1959) When I was about seven years old, on Sunday afternoons, my dad would sit in the living room smoking a cigar (when my mom would let him), listening to this album on his beloved console stereo, which I, of course, was not allowed to touch. That prohibition, of course, increased the allure. His non-rock but otherwise eclectic tastes included Ravel’s Bolero (which my mom hated), Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass’ Whipped Cream and Other Delights (with its titillatingly innovative cover art), Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, and Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band (on five vinyl LPs, which made me decide to take up trombone in fourth grade). Young people today will likely have only heard the two ‘hits’ from Time Out (“Blue Rondo à la Turk” and “Take Five”) in hotel lobbies. Shame. There is so much good music on this record. Jazz purists were not pleased with the popularity of this album. They noted that while this was Dave Brubeck’s most accessible work, it was not his best. And of course they were right, but this album is a wonderful place to start if you’re unfamiliar with jazz, mostly for its creative variations in rhythm. The opening “Blue Rondo à la Turk” is a tour de force in rhythmic experimentation, starting with a ‘Balkan’ 9/8 (2+2+2+3), alternating with standard 4/4 passages for piano and saxophone solos. And the wistful “Strange Meadow Lark” seems somehow destined to be included in a soundtrack for a Woody Allen movie. The third track “Take Five” is iconic for its hypnotic, syncopated piano foundation, languid saxophone melody and 5/4 time signature. You can almost dance to it, although I’d stay away from steps like foxtrot or waltz or chacha or polka or, well, basically anything standard. Just stand there snapping your finger and bobbing hither and yon. Your partner (optional) will join in improvisationally. The point is, it swings (although I’d pay good money to watch a beer hall full of polka dancers working out “Take Five” by adding an extra foot stomp after every other 2/4 measure. Maybe a Monty Python sketch?). But seriously, Joe Morello’s superb drum solo passage on this song (the whole point of it, really) goes a long way toward explaining the appeal of John Bonham’s solo work (“Moby Dick” on Led Zeppelin II, and elsewhere). You see, the reason we liked John Bonham is because he (and we) had already heard and learned from Joe Morello, whether consciously or not. The next track “Three to Get Ready”, plays with an alteration between 3/4 and 4/4 (don’t even try dancing to this one) and is followed by “Kathy’s Waltz”, which starts in 4/4, shifts to 3/4, and at about the three minute mark, we hear 3/4 and 4/4 simultaneously. If you hear strains of The Beatles’ “All My Lovin’”in this song (and you will), please remember that Dave Brubeck did it first. The last two tracks (“Everybody’s Jumpin’” and “Pick Up Sticks”) lack the intricacy of contemporaneous progressive jazz, but will nudge the beginner in the right direction. This album is a great jazz introduction for youngsters and great nostalgia for oldsters. 4/5

Lovely bit of piano jazz

Smooth

Easy listening. Fun. Happy. i prefer songs with lyrics, but this is great mood music.

Non ho mai ascoltato Jazz senza un cantante, credo, e mi piace! Ma 'Take five' è famosissima! E bellissima! 4 stelle, ma quasi 5

Some really good, recognizable cool jazz. Would pop this on to relax.

So smooth, really enjoyed this.

This is that kind of jazz album that is nice to listen to one time per year and remember why we have all this buzz around jazz music style. It's easy to understand with albums like that. Reading the Wikipedia page, it turns even more special, with the different times' explanation. The extended version of the album with live recordings is for sure a 5 star. The original one is too short for it, but it's still a gem.

Good album, love Take 5

Oh, this is that song! Take Five! How did I not know the name of this song? Anyway, I enjoyed this enough that I didn't even stop it when it dove into the bonus tracks, which there were more of than original album tracks. It was in the background and it wasn't. This one got into my ears pretty good.

Aaah kuinka smoothia jazzia! Olen vaikuttunut. Pitää kuunnella lisää!

Great album. Rinkle Tinkle piano keys.

Good fun - a super solid jazz album - not as good as some other contemporaries - but the inclusion of ‘Take Five’ among the track listing makes it an inevitable classic

Fantastic

Classic that hides its time signature innovations in plain sight. "Take 5" still sounds as fresh as ever. Could be a Paul Desmond album.

While this is certainly not a preferred genre of music for me, I feel like I can appreciate talent, and these musicians are clearly talented! If you like this style, it probably doesn't get much better.

This was my introduction to jazz when I was younger. I loved it then, and I still love it now. Take Five is about as quintessential a jazz song (and album) as it comes. All around brilliance.

Surprised to learned one song was a sample for a song from today

Cool jazz, skøre tidsindstillinger, lækkert

This was the first jazz album to sell a million copies you know, and Take Five even made the singles pop charts.. It's great. In the background. But just lacks a little, you know, something. Important, but not significant.

take 5 halt klassiker - ist dave brubeck eig nur so unverhältnismäßig erfolgreich, weil er weiß ist und bürgis dann guten gewissens jazz hören können? - klassiker halt, gut als hintergrundmusik

Take Five and Everybody's Jumping are my favorites, the rest felt like background music, not in a bad way though

Not for me.

Liked it!!!

Mahtava! Menis monta kertaa putkeen, mut piti kahen jälkeen lakata ku jonoa kertyny. Suosikkeihin

I rarely listen to jazz but even I can tell this is something special.

"Blue Rondo a la Turk" right off the bat is known from a bunch of movies but "Take Five" is excellent and a Jazz staple. 8/10.

A jazz album that I actually enjoyed. Take Five the best track

Time Out is widely revered in the jazz world. It is essential cool jazz, but known for pushing jazz in new directions, such as it's use of odd time signatures. This was inspired by Brubeck's time overseas, where he would hear the locals play in time signatures different from the 4/4 that became the norm in western jazz. Moving on, the highlight of this album is easily Take Five, which features a bombastic drum solo from Morello while Brubeck plays the same hypnotizing bar over and over again. It's a display of jazz musicianship unlike any other.

A really solid jazz album. This is one that I feel like I would listen to while investing the death a young up and coming movie starlet in 1950's L.A. I for sure have a drinking and smoking problem, but God damnit I'm good at my job.

Really fun. This is jazz you've heard before on soundtracks, but it is lovely to listen to again

great jazz

4/5 nice jazz record!

My first thought was "slick" but I just don't understand jazz enough to truly appreciate this album. I was surprised at how many listens Take Five had and so I read up on the album. It's basically a national treasure. I guess I don't know music like I thought. It sounds like what any live jazz performance aspires to be (from what I've seen)...really, I wonder if this sound is what jazz musicians are aiming for when they play.

Sounds fantastic, complex rhythms and cool grooves.

Take Five is a classic that I love. The other songs were very interesting listens as well.

Such simple instrumentation with complex melodies. I love this jazz album and that’s coming from a trumpet player who loves brass. This is a staple in an jazz household but also to anyone who doesn’t like jazz, give this one a try.

good stuff

Creo que sería el primer disco de jazz que le haría escuchar a alguien que quiere conocer el genero.

Great album throughout.

Some really great pieces in there!

A member of the internal core of the very classic of jazz recordings, even if not every track is as good as Take 5

First album of Jazz I listened to. Was also on the infographic. Was fun and made me feel like dancing. very full sounding with for a quartet

Jazz, really good jazz.

Recuérdenme donde sale Take Five? En todos lados, no?

Jazz de viejitos. Todo recto y sin alocarse jaja.

I was a bit worried when I saw this was from the 50s, as the previous one I had from that decade sounded increadibly dated. It was actually pretty good. Nice and relaxing, chilled instrumentals. No songs stick out in particular but as a whole is a decent listen.

Really nice clean melodic jazz. Includes three of the most iconic riffs in jazz music. This is what they teach in music school, it’s canon. Killer drum solo on Take 5. Nice listen, perfect for a party. A few of the songs weren’t legend status, so 4.

Absolutely legendary jazz album.

Great! I liked it a lot! I love the weird time signatures. It's a lot of fun. I'll definitely keep it on my mind next time I'm in a jazz mood.

It was pretty good, the first track was the only one I didn't enjoy. Good background music. 4/5 stars.

Really enjoyable. Smooth yazz

Loved this, proper foot tapping jazz, and I’m not a jazz lover in the whole. This ones been added to my favourites for those chilled moments

Nice, jazz

Highly enjoyable listening. Not a jazz fan generally, but this is an album I can see myself putting on again.
