Reviews (page 4 of 8)
This 2021 Lana album got me thinking about the modern music industry. Most albums on this list are included not just for their musical quality, but for their cultural significance. It’s hard to assess the impact of anything from around 2010 onwards. First, because it hasn’t really had time to settle into the public consciousness, and second, because our monoculture is long gone. Success is now about targeting niches, not the masses. Take Taylor Swift. Her No. 1 hits are largely unknown outside her fanbase, but they reach the top because Swifties will buy multiple versions of the same album and stream her songs religiously. Like many other people my age, when I check the Top 40 every few months, I often don’t recognise a single track and struggle to imagine much of it being remembered in 5 years’ time (with some exceptions, of course). Coming back to this album, it’s well-made, but not really for me. I’m certainly not a fan of Jack Antonoff being credited on almost every track. If I’m listening to Lana, I want to hear her songwriting alone, not her alongside a professional songwriter who also works with Taylor, Sabrina Carpenter and Lorde. No wonder so much popular music today sounds so similar.
LITTLE TOO LONG, JUST LIKE IN REAL LIFE 3/5
Never listened to Lana Del Rey before, but this was quite nice. Not sure it belongs on this list, but maybe I'm the wrong audience
Good album but no way is this as good as norman fucking Rockwell which is far superior
yes, she's talented. yes, antonoff sounds good here. but no, we don't need 11 ballads of you whining. NFR was so much better
The opening is a little weak but the rest of the album is fantastic. Strong SEC vibes…
Really grew on me
I enjoyed this more than some of her more feted work. The songs were decent enough and I quite enjoyed the mood. However, I think her popularity is more rooted in vibes than actual substance.
Much better than I expected, but the feel of most of the songs is very similar. Some more variety in tempo and instrumentation might improve this a lot.
I really want to give this album a 4 star...but I just can't get there.
Either this list is gonna include more Lana Del Rey than expected or this selection seems a bit questionable. Not bad by any means just not a standout even among the limited amount of her discography that I've explores.
Actually, didn't expect to see this album here... not her best, not the NFR but still good
definitivamente lana del rey. gosto mais da era popzinha sadgirl dela do que disso aqui, viu. não é ruim, mas não me agradou mto. NÃO É MTO CARNAVALESCO aí não me hypou
“The thing about being on the road Is there’s too much time to think About seasons of old As you pour yourself a drink” I have been meaning to explore Lana Del Rey beyond her excellent debut for a long time so was excited going into this. “Chemtrails Over The Country Club” is significantly less poppy than “Born To Die” but Lana’s voice is as strong as ever. She has a rare ability to express power and fragility in the same breath which I associate with Florence Welch. I always find that this quality hits me hard whenever I hear it. This combined with the grand echoey instrumentals gave me a sense of melancholic nostalgia which I really attach to. That said, it doesn’t surprise me that Lana herself was a little disappointed how this turned out. She lamented not having one more big enthralling hit on the album and I’ll be honest I don’t think there are any songs like that on here. She never quite gets to the grand and captivating places that anyone who has heard “Born To Die” knows she can reach. Still, I really enjoy her voice and her vibe and am bought into her enough to get a lot out of the record.
Listenable
Lana Del Rey definitely belongs on a list like this. She’s a big name star who defined the beginning of the social media era. Is she authentic or manufactured? Does it even matter if the music is good? I would’ve thought her earlier work, which was more in the spotlight, would’ve been the selection (and maybe another of her albums will show up on this list- I haven’t checked). The reviews tend to cite that this was added to the 1001 must listen canon like two months after its release. That’s like how criterion collection always default adds Was Anderson movies as those come out. I think this was a misfire. I listened to the Norman Rockwell album after Chemtrails, and I thought that one had more impact. Both are ‘late’ in her career albums. In other words, this is a case of right artist, wrong choice. It’s like giving Leo an Oscar for The Revenant. Then again, maybe I don’t know shit about shit. My two cents, compared to the early albums and even the one just before this, Cemtrails is Lana del Just Ok.
I didn’t expect to hear she’s way more folk/ singer songwriter than pop music. I never really got her popularity - I feel like there were alot of people doing this kind of thing better with less commercial sucess. The super soft vocals are cool but wish she contrasted it with some bigger moments sometime in the album. The minimal ambient vibe is cool but get a bit boring to me. “ For Free” was the best song. The other singer on the third verse sounds exactly like Joni Mitchell it’s crazy. And the piano sounds like River. Thought it was bold to do a song so much in Joni’s style and looked it up and it’s actually a cover of a song on “Ladies of the Canyon” Other favorites: “White dress” and “lost but just a game.” “Not all that wander are lost”. Worst song: “breaking up slowly”
It is definitely a vibe. Its pretty cool but she gets so much hype i feel shes a little overrated. Still good background music for the right occasion but i dont find it super interesting
It's good, but her later stuff is way better. Check those out instead of this one.
Das war überraschend erfreulich. Ich mag Popmusik nicht, aber es gibt viele Elemente hier, die mir gefallen.
Enjoyed it more than I thought it would, definitely wasn't like the pop stereotype I thought it'd be? Interesting lyrics, instruments and vibe. There was actually a song or two in there I'd definitely listen to again
3- Stars (7/15)
Meh.
Sad girl background music.
it's okay . . . not sure why I need to listen to it tho
I was NOT expecting a Lana Del Rey album on this 1001 list, so I am very surprised. I have always grouped her into a ‘basic white girl’ music artist which I still stand by, but I will say she is a in a higher calibre compared with others in this category. To start the piano and guitar instrumentals are quality, after listening to mainly older albums from 1001 you can really appreciate the production and sound quality of modern music. The sound is very slow, sombre and deep sounding album with a soft textured but powerful voice making a nice harmony. However, it did start to become a little bit samey sounding, I think it’s all good tracks to listen to but due to their slow tempo it’s quite soothing which was lowkey putting me to sleep. Whole thing felt like one big lullaby but in a nice way, there’s this classical felling to the sound. As musical art I think it’s great, as music that I would listen to on the regular not so much the as the mood is very sombre and sorrowful so I feel like I would need to be in that sort of mood to connect with the music and actually want to listen to it. I wasn’t a fan of the whispering type signing in the first song it just sounded off to me but standout songs I would say perhaps, ‘Wild at heart’, ‘Dark but just a game’ and ‘Dance till we die’.
She has a very distinct voice and some of the songs were great.
It was fine, Lana. At times, pretty good.
not even a top three lana del rey album, so I'm not sure why this one is here. she has some 5s in her catalogue. this one still good tho.
First two are absolutely ethereal. Love the wistfulness, especially coming through on the wispy voice of White Dress. Third track is good. Track 4 is pretty dull BUT I love the tune going up at the end of "bittersweet", and love how they have her sing Verse 2 twice and layer it, so we get hear "want" alongside "need" in verse 2; smart way to show the depths of her longing even though intentional, reminded me of the Beatles song where one sang the wrong line by mistake but they left it in; made this song feel oldschool/rough-and-ready in the way I like. Really cool chord progressions in 'Dark But Just A Game' - reminded me of the Beatles again. The rest are very samey, though.
Lana on my first day, pretty cool
2/3. Was it really a surprise that I liked this album? What a sultry voice she has, it really draws you in. In contrast to some others I've listened to recently, this album sounds like it should all sound the same and bleed together, but it just manages to keep things fresh. Maybe the hype was right all along.
Honestly expected to hate it, but I like the vibe. Feels very mysterious, very nostalgic.
Best Song: Dance Till We Die. The best song for actually fitting that melancholy vibe. Worst Song: White Dress. I'm less of a fan of her voice when she squeaks up into that falsetto. Overall: I like Lana Del Ray's manner of singing, but listening to this album made me realize I prefer it in smaller doses, intermixed with other music. Listening to a whole album of hers in one shot starts to feel fatiguing. Sure the breathless delivery is nice, but eventually you start yearning for even just a little bit of breath.
very special one
Album #1,015 When she starts singing on the first track, White Dress, in that whispery vocal style, I said out loud "Oh no, I have to endure 45 minutes of this crap." Thankfully, she doesn't do much of that the rest of the album. Some of the songs are even pleasant to listen to. Still a little too minimalist for me. There was some good singing on the last track, For Free. I just don't know who was singing which part, as it is featuring two other people I'm not familiar with.
yeah… not a fan favourite either
I liked this album, but it's also rather bland and uninspired. Mixed feelings on it, honestly. Lana Del Rey is very clearly a talented singer-songwriter, but I needed a bit more out of this album. Nonetheless, a solid 3 stars.
Vocals are hit or miss, as she kinda loses me with how often she leans on the falsetto. Appreciated the downbeat nostalgic vibe though. Yosemite’s pretty good
This was way too overproduced and used too much electronic instrumentation to be a folk album, so I don’t know what you’d call it, but it’s not folk. Ai has a good voice I suppose, but listening to that high of a register for that long gets old. Favorite part was the trailing instrumental at the end of Chemtrails…. Clever little trick. Favorite track Yosemite, least was easily White Dress. It was just awkward.
Felt like Aurora and Lorde
Enjoyed this, just not my favorite from Lana
Not for me. Ok background music.
I like Lana but this one was nothing special
Incredible vocals, not a lot of creativity to be found on the melodramatic minor key ballads from front to back on this album. Even minor breaks from this formula are celebrated in tracks like Dark But Just a Game. Why throw on this album over Born to Die?.. The influence from Born to Die is clear, it gave us Billie Eilish for God's sake!
Surprisingly good
3.5
Of all the LDR albums….this one?
It’s good, I like some of the vocals on different songs but it’s not one of my favorite albums from her.
Lana's got a pretty voice, but every song is kinda boring here thh
I was told this is not her best album and after listening to it, I have no reason to doubt it. It's not awful. I understand some people love it. I just don't like it very much myself.
I've been meaning to listen to more Lana Del Rey. This is clearly very good but I'm still finding what I have before - I find it hard to connect with the songs emotionally, a lot of it feels a bit detached and artful to me. I think that's a me problem though. I'll give this another listen at some point.
I like glimpses, but it suffered from the modern disease that songs don't do too much/enough and productionis king. I know melancholy is kind of her thing but still. I kind of like what she does and think there is talent here, but it's like there is only 1st and second gear. It's good but too much of not much, and produce the life out. Still, Like it more than thought, could have liked more, newish album probably should have been given space to see if really should be on here. 3 Star
Good stuff, I enjoyed this after listening for a few songs.
Very cozy
Overall: 6/10 This is my first time really listening to Lana. She has a nice voice, and I like her style for the most part. I find her lyrics to be incredibly cringey at times and that's truly stopping me from loving this. Also, this seems like a weird choice since this is her album I've seen discussed the least in pop culture. Fav Song: Dark But Just a Game
I do like Lana Del Ray and this album, but this seems like an odd pick for this list
#795. For some reason, I found this 45 minutes of sad girl pop to be fairly pleasant to listen to. 3/5: decent
It’s good but limited. Everything on it is good as an individual track. But the pace never changes and the vibe is consistent throughout.
I'm not mad about this album being included in this list. But it's slow as hell. Sounds nice and good but just too damn slow and sad.
3.18/5 Stars Top Songs: Wild at Heart, Dark But Just a Game and Not all Who Wander are Lost
This was cute and cheeky
Good but I was depressed at the end of it as usual.
Good album but not for me.
Honestly I liked it. Easy to listen to in the background. Musically, probably not the best album we've had so far. But I'd listen to this again, for sure.
Not my cup of tea, I hear Summertime Sadness and Young and Beautiful, but they aren't playing..
Soft and quaint pop from the softly-sung sugar-and-cream era of popular music where Billie Eilish can be queen and Beach House's Space Song can be a TikTok sensation Not the most distinguishable album from its kind but it's pleasant to receive from the list
# Playlist Track - Chemtrails over the Country Club # Notes - Uninspired, really. Lana's first albums are much more varied. - This one feels like a suuuuper long and bored teenage "sigh".
First song? great. Rest of the album? Idk might take more listens
3.5 (45:28,11 tracks, 2021, seventh album); Americana/folk Not a bad album, I think people misunderstand Lana Del Rey when they criticize her for being boring. The genre is not pop or rock, she is recording in the genre. It's definitely a stripped-down sound that not everyone will find interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Lana but this album was pleasant enough, there weren't any stand out tracks. The album wasn't as good as her previous Norman Fucking Rockwell.
Highlights: - chemtrails over the Country Club - tulsa Jesus freak - Dark but just a Game - Dance Till we die nicht mein Lieblings Lana Album, aber sehr schön, romantisch und persönlich + sehr coheisive
Elevator music
Not what I expected. Sonically, it sounds beautiful. Some of the lyrics are a little over the top for me. Overall, pretty good. My wife summed it up best: sad girl cigarette music.
Too sleepy and samey for me. Someone get this gal a cold brew!!!! I see why people like it but it’s just not for me Great album art and title though!
Nice in the background and foreground. Chill enough not to be distracting the complex enough for critical listening.
Decent
3/6
Coming from the electronic music world, the vast majority of my experience with Lana Del Rey prior to today had been the two remixes Cedric Gervais did for her back in 2013 and the several collabs with the Weeknd from his albums. If I’m being honest, I don’t think I had heard a solo original from her in at least 10 years, as the only ones I can distinctly recall ever listening to were "Summertime Sadness," "Born to Die" and "Young and Beautiful." That said, I’m not completely blind to modern music discourse and I know she’s been on a bit of a hot streak with critics on her last few albums – her music never really resonated with me before, but I’ve been wanting to dip my toes back in at some point. I imagined that my first full album from her would be NFR or Sunset Blvd (or maybe even Born to Die, for the nostalgia), but hey, I’ll take Chemtrails! This album made it immediately apparent that Lana’s writing had improved significantly over the previous eight years. Her vocal delivery also came across as more animated than I could recall and the stripped-back instrumentals gave her lots of space to shine. I won’t say every song smashed it out of the park, but Chemtrails over the Country Club had a decent number of highlights and I never found myself disliking what I was listening to. I was a bit torn between giving this one three or four stars, but I think I’ll go with the lower option since I could probably live without hearing it from cover to cover again (though I wouldn’t mind if someone else put it on). Listening to Chemtrails has given me a new sense of urgency to check out some of Lana’s other recent work and she doesn’t have any other Book Albums, so I just might have to listen to those in the next few weeks! Highlights: Chemtrails over the Country Club, Tulsa Jesus Freak, Let Me Love You like a Woman, Yosemite, Breaking Up Slowly, For Free
Am worried Lana is going to go full "trad-wife" loon, but absolutely love, love, LOVE her voice. Too soon for the list though no?
Alright but poo man’s tori Amos
Felt like I was slightly floating through this one. Didn’t mind it.
Beautiful voice with haunting melodies about manic-love affairs of fantasy. I get why people like her work, but can't separate the art from the terrible morals of the artists.
Eh
Smooth listening
Not bad, not good. Pretty meh
Had a hard time listening to full album.
Okay but I found it got reparative and a bit whiny towards the end.
It’s probably been about 15 years since I last listened to a Lana Del Rey album, and even though I’m not really a fan of her music, this was still a cool listen. It blends folk and Americana with indie pop and dream pop. The foundation is rooted in organic folk and Americana, but there’s also this nostalgic, ethereal atmosphere running through the album that brings out the dreamy, almost otherworldly element.
She’s dreamy but sharp-edged with a style that softly pulls you in and then bludgeons you
Schöne Stimmung, passable Songs, Yosemite ist mein Highlight.
Was quiet and eerie.
Not my usual jam, but actually quite like it
The Good: We get to visit the country club! The Bad: We don’t play golf… The Ugly: It seems that nobody does as their all stoned… I’d written an entire review on this album the day I was listening to it, yet, somehow, it seems that it did not save it… So, here’s the recap of my review in note form: Feels like I’m at a mall. Don’t want to buy anything. Not hungry either. Wanna go home and play something totally different. Nothing wrong with the voice, or production… Dimery, why the F do we need to listen to this, and countless other bland albums that really won’t make us feel better? 2 1/2* upgraded as the voice didn’t want me to hurt something...
I feel about as indifferent about this album as it seems Lana does. If I put this on as a background soundscape and treat her voice as an instrument, it's great. If I pay close attention to it, I'm as bored as she is.
I would do 3 1/2nif I could. Seemed weighted at the end which is nice. If she added bridges, at least for me, we would be talking 4-5 stars. Glad it was on the list.
Chemtrails Over the Country Club feels like Lana decided to ditch everything she had working towards with Lust for Life and NFR and return to the Honeymoon era of things, and like expected it is underwhelming. Underwhelming seems a bit harsh when you put it against two of my favorite Lana Del Rey projects, but the more this project went on the more I did like it, but I do wish it was more consistent for the first half of the album. The folk change is not a change I expected but came to admire more especially with the standout track Dance Till We Die, god I love that little saxophone. I am surprised at how much this album turned my feelings around and I feel like if anyone would give this a proper chance they'd agree.
This is my 417th album of my journey, and this is also the first 2020s album I've generated so far(and what I believe to be the newest album on the list). Overall, it's not too much different than her *Norman Fucking Rockwell!* album, except a little more mellow. It's not bad, and not bad to cruise around in your car listening to on a Sunday afternoon. Favorite Track: "Dance Till We Die".
c'etait super
Actually liked this one. Very calming and nice background music while I worked.
Taylor Swift if she made music for 16 year olds rather than 13 year olds.
It's a personal ick, her voice sound too many to me. And I can tell the difference, as on the last song Weyes Blood sings and her voice is ethereal and pleasurable
Pretty strong writing and intricate composition for what is essentially pop-ified music. It's a quandary that a lot of albums on this list (respect the more modern ones) are "worth listening to before I die" because they were enormously successful...and this influential. But, they were designed by committee to be that way. Not to say that Lana del Rey isn't a wild talent or that this album is bad. Merely to say that, if this was Wanda Del Reuben without the star power, it'd be fine. It would not be something on this list. About 30% of the albums here feel, I don't know, recursive? Self-referential in their credentialing? "See, I'm worth it! Says so because of who I am! It's on the label!" But, I just want to hear great news music I have never been exposed to. This list has also given me plenty of that. This album isn't it. Still good though. Suppose I'm just a year into this and giving every album a full listen every day is tough some days. I won't give Lana short shrift here though. Even though it's overproduced for my taste her essence still pushes through the caked on industry nonsense and kind of saves it for me. Good album.
LDR walked so Billie Eilish could run. She crafts her narratives exceptionally, but musically this isn’t her best.
Not the one I would have picked. Fine, but a snoozer. 2.5.
It's always nice to get a recent album in the rotation, and I've been curious to listen to a whole album by Lana Del Ray (my only previous exposure has been to her much earlier song and video "Video games", which I enjoyed). It's a nice enough album, and her voice is definitely distinctive, but I was disappointed by how repetitive it feels overall. The lyrics *do* vary across the songs, although the themes of melancholy and loss seem deeply entrenched, and most of the tracks sound very similar, and also pretty similar to the cadence and style of "Video games". There are a few sparks of a somewhat different rhythm in a few tracks, primarily in "White dress" and "Dance till we die", but even there it's like a flash of color in the monochrome. (And why does she keep repeating that she was at a "business conference" so much in "White dress"?)
Pop, melancholisch, 2021 -> 3
Svårt. Lyssnat flera gånger nu. Pendlar. En stunden gillar jag det väldigt mycket andra stunder, meh. Kräver rätt sinnesstämning. Det är vackert och stämningsfullt. Det blir nog en trea i slutändan. Men det hade lika gärna kunnat bli fyra, en annan dag.
My only point of reference for Lana Del Rey before this was Norman F**ing Rockwell*, and I cannot say I liked this one as much. Chemtrails Over the Country Club has the same dreamy, atmospheric quality she is known for, but it felt a little too muted and slow for me to fully get into. The title track had some nice moments, and her voice is always strong, but a lot of the songs just blended together without much to separate them. It is more background mood than an album that grabbed my attention.
6/10 She belts pretty 9-23-2025
A somber and moody record. Despite it's whispered vocals and droning instrumentals, the record is still engaging and enjoyable!
Pleasant enough
Nicer than anticipated.
3.5 stars
I do like the vibes of Lana Del Rey albums. I don't seek her out very often, but if I ever want to feel like I am forlornly looking out a car window remembering the better times in life, then this (or any album from her) is a good choice.
This album is better than I thought it would be. What critics deem to monotonous has some sort of slowly dragging you in feel if you're open to it. Otherwise, it is a nice background listen. It's very American in nature with all its topics and themes which isn't something you can get me with. As a European, I know way too much about America due its cultural dominance than I know enough about some of other European countries.
Off the cuff remark: I saw Lana Del Rey performing Video Games live, solo, on Jools Holland and was blown away. I bought the Born to Die album and was deeply disappointed. It felt hugely overproduced. This album has a similar disappointment about it. At times I feel like an old man, "what? Speak up, I can't hear you" it's an irritation rather than being "ethereal" or something? Is it the production again? Standout track: none, really Revisit?: maybe I need to.
Unexpectedly calm
it is poetically pleasant
nice, not my thing
Dark but just a game
Lana Del Rey is very attractive and has a great voice. Until now, I had only heard individual songs by her. Now there is a relatively new album. I am not sure why this particular album of hers appears on the list. Somehow, it was rather thin and boring. Lana Del Rey has made better recordings. 3/5
I like Lana Del Rey, but this album is so similar to the sound of Norman Fucking Rockwell. Everything it does, Norman Fucking Rockwell does better. Not bad, but I don't understand how it's novel enough to make this list.
I liked the last two songs. She has a beautiful voice, but most of the songs were the repetition of one phrase. Over and over and over….
The lyrics were compelling. Could listen to this album occasionally.
Inoffensive. Nice voice and some nice songs. Perfectly listenable but somewhat forgettable.
Ok
Liked this more than I thought I would. Unique ethereal vocals and very laid back tunes. Not much in the way of a change of pace though but if slow ballads are your thing then you will prob like this more than I did
My ex was really into Lana Del Rey. When I found out Lana married an aligator tour guide I felt I suddenly truly understood my ex. She does porn now (My ex, not Lana) oh boy was that a suprise. Anyway, the album was alright, I liked the last song but not as much as when Joni sings it.
I keep thinking I'll like her more. I dunno.
I'm not a huge Lana del rey fan but she's got a some good songs, this was a very somber album not a terribly great album but it was pretty good!
All the songs sound the same.
Kinda nice
Kinda interesting we've recently gotten 3 different modern albums in this female pop-singer/songwriter genre (Lorde, T Swift, and now Lana) all having the same producer, this Jack Antonoff guy. This album has a similar vibe to those other 2, but certainly closer to Taylor's Evermore. I'm no expert on Lana, but I really found the first couple of songs off-putting with the breathy singing. The vocals improved a lot in the middle section of this album with my favorite songs being Let Me Love You Like A Woman and Wild At Heart. I also enjoyed the simplicity of Yosemite. I would grade this similar to Evermore: solid album, but probably a bit too melancholy and lacks a true hit. High 3.
Pretty solid for singer songwriter
I feel like I should like Lana but every time I listen to her I get bored out of my mind. A few songs in and no different. Although I'm really enjoying Dark But Just a Game is a standout. Dance Till We Die is also very fun.
Weirdly listenable to.
My first Lana album. Thought it was a concept album at first. Heartful singing and stories. Good for a quiet, introspective night. Would try more of her stuff.
Very calm and lots of interesting whisper type singing (annoying??)
My kid is super into this album, this artist: the drama, the persona, the lyrics. So it was kind of fun to give it a listen. She has her lane and she knows what she is doing and she is super good at it. Her work is so American in this alt-pop unsettling nostalgic way that seems so different from the nostalgia for American that is so rife right now and unsettling for very different reasons. Very solid.
I liked that I heard some new sounds. Lana's high pitched squealing vocals are something I would try to imitate haha. Would I listen again? Yes but it wasn't that memorable for me. Dark but just a game was a good song.
Not the best, mellow but bland
Same with Lana. I respect her music and what she brings but her stuff is too soft and slow for me.
Enjoyable with some really interesting melodies, falls short of her best work and white dress is irritating as
Another nice voice, but not really my kind of music.
I like the almost ambient, distant feel of the instrumentation on most of these tracks. Said features prime the listener into this odd state of depressed nostalgia that I can’t say I’ve experienced elsewhere. Lana’s vocals are easy on the ears too, barring a few choice moments on the album’s opener, “White Dress,” which I still enjoy more than I don’t. Still, the instrumental mixing I mentioned earlier, while hypnotic in its opening, undeniably well-produced and enjoyable, goes on to become the albums greatest burden as tracks blend together into a much less impactful mush near the center. For how it seems, certain tracks are positioned in the album to break up the repetitive sound, and they work to an extent, but still, the sheer amount of similar arrangements on offer cheapens the impact of the experience as a whole. In my opinion, this album would benefit greatly from a bit of trimming, as this kind of repetition is better served on an EP than a full release. 3.5
I’m a Lana fan, but this is one of her more boring albums. I like the duet with Weyes Blood though.
Melancholic voice in every song, but a solid album
meh
I get the appeal, and I can appreciate a few of her songs when in the right, melancholic-y mood, but by the end of the album I had this cloying feeling, it was too much. Anyways, this was my first time listening to anything by Lana Del Rey and I'm glad I did find her, but I'm not looking forward to listen to her again :) I really hope the next album has some drums in it!
Vibes
The first 60% of this was pretty good but I thought the last couple songs were the weakest. I have no idea why this is the album they picked for her when she has multiple that's way more critically acclaimed. Overall enjoyed it. Makes me wanna listen to her other stuff
An interesting mix of tracks. She has a magnificent voice but doesn't always let it shine.
3.
I haven't listened to Lana Del Rey before but the album name made me laugh out loud. The album itself is a good pop album. Very softspoken music but never dull. For me it would have been nice with some more energetic songs mixed in but it feels like that's not her vibe at all.
Initially when the album started off with White Dress, the High, Breathy voice was quite weird especially when mixed with the Jammed/Forced cadence of some of the pre-chorus/chorus lines. However, getting deeper into the album, the voice did start becoming quite haunting even if the tone of the album remained quite similar but things slowed down and took slower and more melancholic turns. It is able to hold itself just about at a 3.5/5 but definitely not enough to be bumped to a 4 and instead will be bumped to a 3 instead.
A 3.5, being an album that I will probably put on from time to time. A few weaker songs brings it down but the first half has some lovely tracks.
I feel that Lana’s and Frank Ocean’s music are quite similar. LA subject matter and vibe, passionate arrangements, a freedom in their vocal performances. This is probably one of my least favorite Lana albums though. Give us some NFR, list!
Melodically it feels like she has written all these songs before. I thought Norman Fucking Rockwell! was her best?
You know, I didn’t really expect to like this one as much as I did, but it’s quite good. I don’t like the weird whispering thing she does on the first song, but after that, the album actually gets pretty good. It’s a little overproduced, but Lana has an incredible voice regardless. This album is extraordinarily relaxing and vibey. I actually thoroughly enjoyed “Tulsa Jesus Freak” and “Dark But Just A Game” the most. Put this down as one of the albums that genuinely surprised me with how good I found it. Little fun fact, as of writing this, this album is one of just 2 that came out the same year as the last revision of the book that this site pulls from.
Didn't expect to like it, and I'm not going to go out of my way to listen to whole albums of hers, but I quite enjoyed it, very relaxing.
"Chemtrails over the Country Club" is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey. Americana, country folk and folk are the Wiki-listed genres. I guess that works. The album was produced by Lana, Jack Antonoff and Rick Nowells. Album themes include friends and family, escapism, love, heartbreak, nostalgia and disillusionment. The album had wide-spread critical acclaim and, commercially, it reached #1 in the UK and #2 in the US. "White Dress" opens the album with a soft piano, drums and guitar. That's most songs by the way. Lana in a higher-registered voice sings about her younger self: waitressing, listening to the White Stripes and Kings of Leon and traveling with her boyfriend to a business conference in Orlando. The self-titled "Chemtrails over the Country Club" sees Lana go back to a deeper voice. She said this song was about family and friends. I picked up the contrast of chemtrails and country club life...is there something underneath the lives of those rich people? In "Tulsa Jesus Freak" she tackles religion to a certain extent. Not a total repudiation nor an endorsement of religion. One of the highlights of the album is the first single released "Let Me Love You Like a Woman." A dreamy ballad. Layered Lana vocals. Fairly traditional gender role lyrics. A critic compare this song to Mazzy Star. That's a nice comp. "Dance Til We Die" is an ode to Stevie Nick's, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. This is a more lush song with the mellotron and goes bluesy for a bit with the horns. A song about the curse of fame and the complexity of love. The lyrics and vocals are the centerpiece of this album. The music is for the most part subdued, minimal and chill. The themes mentioned in the opening paragraph pretty summarize her topics. What is unique is how Lana poetically describes things especially herself. She's traditional yet has a wild side. She's seems to have enjoyed the country club lifestyle yet questions the taint of the rich and realizes the curse of fame. Is she religious or not religious? She travels the US - Yosemite, Orlando and Tulsa yet doesn't really specifically comment on it. I guess I'm realizing she has lots of observations without any definitive answers. Life is complex. I do like this album. I don't know if this for everyone but if you are a folk or even pop music fan or like lyrics in general, this is an album worth checking out.
6/10
No soy muy de lana del rey de normal pero la verdad q este album no estuvo mal del todo
LdR's music dwells in the abject psychosis of Americana, surfing its fantasies and detourning its tropes. Chemtrails over the country club is a great line in this vein - speaking to both the ambient toxicity that haunts the American suburbs but also the deranged conspiratorial ways of thinking about the disquieting latent menace of living in the heart of empire. Her voice is whispy and ethereal; the melodies are seductive and elusive, approaching familiar moves before turning away. No hooks here, just mood. The music is the same, floaty swells of piano and acoustic guitar with strings and slides and backing vocals that rise and and fall. This album doesn't really have a stand out track and gets pretty samey, a bit boring with ballad after ballad and no beats to be found - she should be on the list, but this the wrong choice. In 2015 a friend said LdR is music for dumb guys with smart girlfriends and refused to elaborate, but it makes sense.
alright, not bad
= the Beatles
I like her voice and style. Overall this album isn’t my favorite of hers, but it’s not bad.
Let me Love You Like A Woman was actually written about Len Houmous after Lana and Len went out partying for the night. Len always saw her as more of a daughter he wanted (he had lots of other daughters he definitely didn’t want, and the feeling was and is very much mutual) but Lana saw it otherwise. They joked that of they married they could be Lana and Len Del Rey - Houmous. It was and still is very funny to think about that. 2.6 4/12 Let Me Love You Like A Woman
Enjoyable.
It's fine. I don't really see myself seeking it out.
Perfectly acceptable and inoffensive, i thought her voice was going to be annoying, but it turned out well.
I was not expecting something from 2021 to be on this list. I enjoyed this record. The songwriting and storytelling were excellent, and I enjoyed Lana's emotionally charged vocal delivery. I did have a few gripes with this project. I feel like the general sound in this record felt a little bland. At times, it felt like some songs were too similar to others. Favourite Track(s): Chemtrails Over the Country Club, Breaking Up Slowly Least Favourite Track(s): Tulsa Jesus Freak
I don't think it is essential, and some of the lyrics are kind of cringe-y, but the melodies and production are great and overall it is a good album.
Good album. top quality vocals in White Dress.
3 - It was pleasant, not much else to say tbh
Fine - Lana Del Rey sounding Lana Del Rey record. 3.4/5
I’m fine with Lana’s inclusion in the list, but this album was a strange choice when NFR was right there
Pleasant enough songs with some clever songwriting. It’s just not really for me, there isn’t a ton of variation in sound throughout and ends up sounding like different strories with similar themes and the same tones. It’s a fine enough album just like toast with a little butter is a fine enough snack. 3 stars
A good album, but nothing to write home about. Classic Lana Del Ray trying to make me feel sad and stuff. Good overall but nothing that stood out to me personally.
I like Lana Del Rey. She's got an amazing voice and some great songs. But I like her in smaller doses. An entire album of sadcore is too much for me. Still, I like this one a lot as it's less alt-pop than her other albums.
My previous commentary on this was wiped out, but for those complaining about an album this current making it on the list, I wanted to let you know that it is not, nor has it ever been on the official list this site is pulling from. I'm guessing it's the people on this site taking some creative liberty. That said, this album is fine although a little flat as far as variety goes. Every song sounds pretty much the same as the last but they're still good songs, they just get a little tiresome over a full albums worth.
걍뭐
is this the only Lana album on the list? feels like NFR or Born to Die should have been the pick…
Not the best Lana, but there's so many clever lyrics and aching melancholy. Love the Joni Mitchell cover. A high 3.
I’m familiar with a few of her songs and I generally like her, but it does seem like she’s a bit of a one trick pony. It’s overall a good album, but a little more variety would up it for me. It’s also a weird inclusion because the album was brand new when it was included. I personally hold the opinion that nothing that’s less than 5 years old should be included in a list such as this. Sometimes things that seem great fade into obscurity and something obscure rises in prominence. Chemtrails was only a few months old when the 2021 book came out.
Very talented singer was okay can understand why she’s popular not necessarily my thing
Ehhhh
Another fine lyricist with interesting music. This is a good album but not as interesting as Born to Die. The main issue I have is that Lana Del Rey tends to sing in a high register quite a bit and there is a certain sameness to that form that pervades many of her songs and albums.
Some really great songs on here but the album as a whole was kind of boring.
Music for the worst girl you know Pretty good though
Born to Die is a 10/10 for me so I was excited to dive deeper into Lana’s catalog. I’m sorry to say that this album didn’t do much for me.
Pretty standard Lana, very airy vocals, nothing really stood out to me like NFR
J - 3/5 Best Track - "Chemtrails Over The Country Club" F - 3/5 Best Track - "Wild At Heart"
Atmosphere and mood has so much to do with music. How am I feeling when I listen? Where am I as I listen? What time of day do I listen? Who am I with when I listen? Am I hungry? Tired? I listened to this on my porch at night with my wife after a meal and a long day. It was nice. Will I listen again? Probably not. The whisper singing that Billie Eilish popularized really do it for me, but you can hear the professionalism in the production - so clean.
Some eerie magic in Lana’s style
I like Lana's earlier work (the beats and samples, and the 40's style vocals), but this album was a little too mellow / monotone / boring. The title song is probably the best one, but nothing really stood out.
Waffled on a 3 or 4 on this one. But other people in my group have said Del Ray has better, earlier albums. So, I'll go with 3 here. But this was interesting enough that I want to check out the rest of her catalog.
It's a bit bemusing how the critics fall over themselves over Lana's late career output. I don't know if it's the vaguely Americana themes, the fact that she's conventially pretty & safely white, or how often her songs intimate weird sugar daddy dynamics. Maybe it's all those things. I think Lana's talented. Born to Die is an amazing album filled with angsty up and down tempo tracks. At the time it came out, it didn't sound like anything else in the pop landscape. But Lana seems to have taken herself increasingly seriously with each subsequent album, with all of that pop sensibility fading away for more of a chanteuse-who-swears vibe. The songs aren't bad, but they do all start to sound the same. I'd be happier with fewer, better albums than the yearly drop of valium-influenced ballads that sadly seems to have become Lana's norm.
-just in time, I got quite a bit into Lana Del Rey last month. her voice never fails to affect me emotionally in a unique way pretty much no other artist has -I hadn’t heard this one before. it’s pretty good, not necessarily her strongest work imo so I’m surprised it’s the token Lana album on here but there are some REALLY good standouts on here. elegant and beautiful -Favorites are White Dress, Tulsa Jesus Freak, and Wild At Heart
I liked it, for the first song. Then it kept being the same thing for each song. I don’t think I’ll ever revisit this album, but I will probably enjoy it whenever a song comes up in my random playlist.
A bit repetitive but a nice slice of Americana. LDR is the inverse Chappell Roan. 3.5
I think is good! First Lana Del Rey album for me. She reminds me of BANKS and I love BANKS.
Probably not one of her very best, this has a very classic Lana dreamlike feel that developed in her music over the last handful of years. This one feels like each song is kind of the same, flowing into one another. Not bad, but not her best work.
Still Lana, so it still has some great instrumentals & vocals, & is still enjoyable, but it definitely sounds very... bog standard for her, nothing really made it standout from the others, it's just another Lana album.
NFR! but not as good. I don't think it really gets going until Let Me Love You Like A Woman. Wild At Heart and Breaking Up Slowly are the standouts in my opinion. Why this is the album on this list rather than Norman Rockwell I have no idea. This is fine, but that's excellent. Go listen to that. 3 Stars.
there’s better lana albums but this was decent
My problem with Lana continues to be that she's a one trick pony. She writes sad, haunting ballads and she writes them well. But it's all she writes. You know exactly what you're in for when you listen to a Lana album. If you're into it, it won't disappoint but, if you're not, you're going to get bored quickly. She needs to understand that she'll never top Video Games in the genre of sad, haunting ballad. Everything else falls short. Move on, Lana. Make a synth pop album.
I know there's something there, at least talent wise, but I can't get past her low volume, whispery, bored out of her mind, crooner-style that somehow built her career around. Her vocal delivery reminds me of when I used to do some late night self-recording in the basement when my parents were asleep and couldn't actually sing full volume. I'm Somewhat surprised this is her 6th album already and wonder why this album released in 2021, is a "must hear"? I admit, I don't mind it, but really essential music should have more impact and something special to it over a random song on the radio.
All of the songs sound the same to me.. they are pretty, but they are all sad.
Buen disco, aunque sus arreglos me parecen muy recargados al final.
Atmosphère à la Mazzy Star très sympa.
Sad girl music. I like LDR but this isn't the album I would have chosen, probably by 4th favourite. High 3
Great album, but a but too much of the same thing. Something for a quiet evening...
Fucking finally something i think i would enjoy and past 2020s In the first song at 2:30 she just mumbled the lyrics(Down at the men in music business conference) so fast so she can keep up idk made me laugh. would understand that in the that song Im Too Missy. But here was funny. ok and she did it multiple times ok. How didn't i find this in my pretty sad girls songs era. its amazing. I love her voice. I forgot to write a review or anything i just enjoyed it... Ok i enjoyed it sank yoh. but its a 3 cuz i have grown up from this taste see yooh
I remember Lana got heat for this album title when it came out, but I think it's elite. She's forever been a one-album artist for me, but that one album (Norman Fucking Rockwell) is a defining record of the 2010s, and has the decade's best song (The Greatest). So it's a bit odd that I didn't even bother listening to this when it came out? Unfortunately, I don't think it recaptures what made NFR so great, as a true lightning-in-a-bottle product, but it does have a lot of merit, particularly at the start (even if there are some vocal choices in White Dress that are completely baffling). Happy enough to have heard this, but it's not going on any kind of rotation.
It was okay. A little homogenous. Hard to tell one song from the next. Lyrically strong.
Very beautiful voice but the track list isnt very memorable. Is this even her best album?
There's definitely a couple songs on here that I see myself returning to. Really nailed that slow, chilled mood
Voice a bit too high and broken for me v
Was looking forward to listening to this so I could see the reasoning why Lana Del Rey has such an obsessive fanbase....failed to see why. It wasn't terrible, but nothing that deserves the praise she gets. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of music where vocals are the main draw and the instrumentals are the afterthought, but artists like Adele and Beyonce I GET the worship. All this being said, I wouldn't say this is 1 or 2 star worthy. Just meh.
Automatic point deduction for buying into and propagating the Chemtrails conspiracy theory. Shame, this album had some songs way better than wha I expected from the creator of the awful 'Video Games' and 'Summertime Sadness'
Sad white girl music - this is what I wanted Tortured Poets Department to be.
Starts off nice enough but soon gets a bit tedious. Sickly sweet and depressed, and I say that as a Radiohead fan.
She is a slightly better Taylor Swift, which is not much
It's way better than I was expecting. I just know the abstruse lyrics of Lana del Ray's National Anthem which is just... Let's say: naive. And didn't age well, by the way. This, however, is actually poetic. And I like it musically.
The title track is very sweet, I recall hearing it before and I added it to my playlist. The rest of the album dragged on a bit but it was more or less enjoyable.
I want to like Lana Del Rey more than I actually do. She's spooky, moody, sexy...I'm just not the biggest fan of her music.
Lana Del Ehhhh. I don't dislike this enough to drop it down to a 2 but I was disappointed. I don't really enjoy the whispery, ethereal style she's using here; she sings like a ghost that hasn't realized it's dead yet. Downatthemeninmusicbusinessconference...
I have a love/ hate relationship with this album. On one hand it is really special and great. On the other it is simply overproduced. I want so badly to hear these voices just real. Warts and all. One of my close friends is a sound engineer. I am amazed by what he does, and I like when people do some tweaking -- of course! But every song... I felt the auto tune and the just oversampling and the ... no. Nope. It felt commercial and fake. I KNOW it could have been so much more intimate and special that THAT is what bothers me so much here. Even so, I won't bash it completely. I don't blame the musicians themselves or the songwriting (that is for sure!).
Good album. Not great. A little different.
Decent, not really much else to say
6.7/10
Nice enough. this whole Chappel Roan Sabrina carpnter Lana Del Ray things bleeds together for me
Pretty good, she has 3 better albums than this though
If I listened to it a couple more times I’d bet it’d be a 4 star
liked this far more than I expected
Schöne Stimme in einem sehr ausgewogenem Album. Die Texte sind klar und melodisch unterlegt. Dem Album fehlen aber magische Momente um es über einem guten Durchschnitt bewerten zu können. Bester Song ist „Let Me Love you Like A Woman“. In „Not All Who Wander Are Lost“ lässt die Interpretin Ihre phänomenale hohe Stimme aufblitzen.
It's decent but it's the wrong Lana album on this list. Ultraviolence should be on here. That said, a good listen.
Aivan liian tuotettu, jonkin verran täytettä. Melodisesti aika tasaisen hyvä, jopa uskalias (kuten avausbiisissä). En tule kuuntelemaan tätä kokeakseni suuria tai haikeita tunteita, mutta arvostan koukkuja siinä missä kuka tahansa pop-kuluttaja, ja niitä artisti on jaksanut miettiä.
Haven’t listened born to die and it’s about the same for me.
should be called Chemtrails over the water park considering all the watery reverb on this thing. is that funny?? idk i just have nothing to say about this album... i guess thats just what happens when you get jack antonoff as your only producer for your pop album. it turns out very clean, to a fault. songwritings pretty good though
I liked her music 15 years ago and somehow I still like it. I needed two session to get it but then I really enjoyed it.
It's alright. But I don't know if it is even the best album from her. It will probably and rightfully be removed in future editions
This wasn't bad. Very ethereal and dreamy sounding kind of album. Definitely some chill vibes going on here. I didn't hate it, but it did not help motivate me this morning to be productive in any way. It just made me want to crawl back into bed and go to sleep.
A few good songs on this one. Lots of repetitive lyrics that are rife with cliches. Tulsa Jesus Freak was my favorite song.
# Album Name: Chemtrails Over The Country Club # Artist: Lana Del Ray # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Lana has a lovely singing voice. Its very nice. Theres a couple of decent tracks on this album like white dress, Chemtrails over the country club and wild at heart. But overall, its very samey. Its a pretty average album. Definitely should not be on the list if im honest. # Top Tunes: white dress, Chemtrails over the country club and wild at heart # Would I listen to it again? No. A couple of tracks maybe but thats it.
Don’t even think this is her best album, but it’s solid bedroom pop. A little drawn out at times and less innovative than some of her other albums.
All the songs kind of sounded the same, people love her but never really got it. Doesn't help thay she created the firdt nepo daddy. Still decent though. Low 3.
Really rode the line between having a nice chill vibe and just being boring. There were a couple songs where it broke out of the quiet formula and they were quite good, just not enough of that.
Nun ja. Geht so.
It’s pretty good. I like the style, the atmosphere and her voice. I just don’t quite get why such a new album is on this list
Decent and holds up well.
A bit boring, but I like her voice. 3/5
I love her voice, but this album isn't her best - not sure whether we've got Norman Fucking Rockwell to come, but that's much better than this, there's more variety and it does better to bring out the haunting floatiness in her voice. Perfectly fine, but not sure why this one is on the list. 3/5.
This falls more on the pop side than the folk side. I enjoyed more than I thought. It's one of the more interesting Jack Antonoff produced albums I heard. I really liked the Joni Mitchell-esque track For Free with Weyes Blood.
She has a very nice voice, the music is perfect for the tone and well arranged and played. Everything really works… except the lyrics just don’t do much for me. That’s more of an observation than a critique.
I like her voice. I don't know if this is any better then her other albums I've listened to.
I've never listened to any Lana Del Ray before, but I thought this was perfectly fine. I'm not sure it's good enough to be on the list, but I had no problem with it at all.
Not so bad
Странный выбор её альбома. Это приличный альбом, но точно не самый интересный, и уж точно не лучший в её каталоге. Norman Fucking Rockwell лучше до, Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd лучше после, и собственно говоря очень удивительно, в какой бы момент времени этот альбом ни был добавлен. Лучшая песня - Chemtrails Over the Country Club.
Me gusta este disco, pero creo que es mejor NFR
Generalnie nie jest to zły album, ale bardzo jednostajny. Taka typowa Lana. 3/5
3/5
That's not my taste in music. But ok.
I always feel like I’m going to like Lana Del Rey more than I do And I do like this but not enough to really want to listen to it again
None of these songs were really in a style I like. Too slow, rambling, not really got a pulse or going anywhere. Her voice is clearly amazing though, and there were a couple which I enjoyed more than just 'meh'. Top songs: White dress Breaking up slowly Worst songs: All the others
A good listen
Fiona Apple meets Taylor Swift
6/10 Very samey. She is talented but needs more flavour Favourite Song=Wild at Heart Least Favourite Song=For Free
Very chill music, and pleasant to listen to. Some beautiful songs but everything is also quite similar.
Dark But Just a Game slaps hard.3/5
Decent album, kinda folky and dreamy. Not as up-beat and pop-y as some of her other stuff.
I really like Lana Del Ray, but this album isn't nearly as good as her Born to Die album. Love her voice and singing style.
Slightly more imaginative than the other Lana albums I've listened to. Lovely voice.
If Thom Yorke was sexy and wanted to write a pop album, this would be it. An interesting translation of music I'm more familiar with finding its' way through the channels to be pop. Its' dark tone definitely helped catalyze similar minimal pop albums and artists in recent years.
Lana Del Rey seems to get stronger for me with each passing day
Kaunis ääni ja tunnelmallinen. Ehkä turhankin toisteinen ja vuoden 2021 levy vähän yllättävä nosto tällaiselle listalle. En puolesta enkä vastaan.
Sad girl pop, chaotic and beautiful. Very Joni sounding, with odd timing on the vocal delivery and some interesting, soft melodies. I didn’t fully connect with it, but can appreciate the artistry.
Lowk mid
Listened to this while playing Isofarian Guard. This album title is so Lana, it is almost a caricature. I really enjoyed her debut album...it hit me in all the feels. This, while enjoyable, would not be the album I'd suggest people start with...
OK.
excited to see what all the tumblr throwback girlies are so excited about. Her voice always reminds me of Baz Luhrmann's 2013 Gatsby. A great choice for a Daisy song White Dress: I love how she says Business Conference. I'm going to start saying it like that whenever I go to a Business Conference Chemtrails Over the Country Club: being at a country club is not a universal experience. just throwing in some astrology for good measure, thanks Lana Tulsa Jesus Freak: this feels slightly more funky than the last two. well, the chorus does Let Me Love You like a Woman: is this about toxic masculinity? men not wanting to be seen doing feminine things, including in the way they're loved? or is this about Lana feeling like she's not able to do what she wants to do? or is this queer longing - but longing to be queer. much to think about Wild at Heart: god she's obsessed with romanticising cigarettes. better than vaping though I guess. Big I'm not like other girls energy Dark but Just a Game: hmm. not my favourite Not All Who Wander Are Lost: such a boring song title. Very 2012. Yosemite: When I was young I used to pronounce this as Yose-mite. Unconvinced by her high notes here, her lower register is much nicer Breaking Up Slowly: girlie we've all been there. Her sudden country twang is a bit jarring after the rest of the album Dance Till We Die: this is fine For Free: sounds like she's having a nice life. wild that she made school have two syllables - very Invernesian. their voices all sound nice together and that's lovely. delighted that Lana is married to an alligator tour guide now, it's so rogue but I'm so into it. Never mind just found out he's a bigot. Not massively surprised Overall I'm feeling like this album would be a good choice for a big sad nighttime walk. It's produced well, but isn't the most exciting album ever. last song was lovely though
You know what, it really wasn’t as bad as people are saying it is. I don’t know if it’s because of some complex music listeners have where anything released after 2000 is terrible, but this really wasn’t bad. Gives off vibes of Taylor Swifts Evermore and Folklore, her best albums, obviously. It’s slow and calm, and yet moving. Still, it’s not that great. Perhaps, it may be a little too slow. I don’t know it’s not really my style. But still, it’s… not bad. Whatever.
My only complaint is how monolithic this whole thing sounds. It's just 11 bricks that came out of the same block of stone.
Ethereal and strange, but I kind of liked it.
she has a nice voice when she isn't doing all that "breathy" stuff. Tracks all seem to have the same slow tempo and structure, gets a bit boring after a while, could do with a few more upbeat tracks. As a singer/songwriter she is ok at telling little stories but she hasn't got any 'hooks' in her songs that make them memorable. I get a sense of disappointment that it could be so much more. Favourite tracks were 'Dark but just a game' and 'Breaking up slowly'. with 'For free' also standing out but this latter is a Joni Mitchell song and she did it better in 1970, in fact this last track only leads you to compare with Joni and I'm afraid the latter wins, even after 50 years - listen to 'Ladies of the Canyon'. All-in-all a nice album but too "samey" and fairs poorly in comparison with Joni Mitchell.
First time listening to Lana Del Rey. Music made for cinematic moments. Music made for music videos. Gatsby. High school. A long drive alone smoking a cigarette. As much as I hate this niche, the production is so great and her voice is so perfect I can’t help but vibe out to some of these tracks. I get her now. Soaring vocals way up there with a mix of fuzzy Americana and buttery synths below. This is the shit I ate up in high school, and although I’m 10 years removed from high school, I liked getting sent back to it by this album. A nostalgia for a such a ripe time, when you’re doing so much for the first time, and smoking weed which makes everything feel the first time! At times the writing on this album is so trite and crummy I want to skip, but it’s held together by excellent, production that made me feel closer to heaven. Fav track: tulsa jesus freak
Soft, mellow and dreamy. Lana Del Ray has a nice voice but little range. The songs all sound very similar to the point that I mistook the first 3 songs ("White Dress", "Chemtrails over the Country Club" and "Tulsa Jesus Freak") as the same song. I enjoyed "Let Me Love You like a Woman" and "Wild at Heart". The rest of the album was just okay. Not enough variety for me to revisit this particular album.
Slow and sad...kind of a bummer tbh
It’s fine but just sounds like NFR! leftovers. Why did this make the list over NFR!? I’m gonna go listen to NFR!
