Reviews (page 8 of 8)

When she sings high and loud, her voice is actually painful to me.

Very much not to my taste, got so bored

Her voice destroys these wonderful songs for me. Give me Hazel Dickens anytime.

I don't like the 60's

Folk music is already not my cup of tea, and then to make shit worse, this bitch out here yodeling. Save that shit for Cliffhanger on The Price Is Right or if Mars attacks…Ack Ack Ackack 🛸⚡️💀

Every song sounds the same.

not a big fan, music is fine, don't like the voice

An insufferable music teacher gone mad.

I'm sorry but I really couldn't stand this. Her voice went right through me Songs were very boring and this album couldn't be saved 1 ⭐️

untenable vocals for me sonically

1/10 - wow this is bad, religious ramblings for bible belt listeners. Should not be anywhere near this list

Wow, I had no idea the impact this album has had on hip hop culture. I had never listened to Tom Tom Club before, but I recognized the background beats from a massive variety of songs. Genius of Love might be the most sampled beat I have ever heard, and I just learned what it is from. This was a particularly shocking realization for me because the opening song "Wordy Rappinghood" gave me very similar vibes to "Don't Hug Me, I'm scared" (if you're unfamiliar, look that up at your own risk). Overall the music was very fun to listen to, extremely creative (hip-hop artists for years apparently agree), and to a fun amount, experimental. However it wasn't music that I actually enjoyed. I'd say it's probably a 4/5 on merits, 2/5 for personal enjoyment, so I'll settle for 3/5 for me.

Phew, country and folk. Peaceful whispers of the worst kind. It reminds me of embarrassing scenes in the schoolyard from my youth. Back then, as a peace-loving greenhorn, you listened to Joan Baez. As a rocker, it was almost unbearable, but most of the pretty girls were in the movement. Now, as a silverback, older and -perhabs- wiser ;-) , I thought I could listen to it again and maybe enjoy it. But no, I couldn't even get through the first song. 1/5

I don't like to downgrade music simply because it's not my style, but I was listening to this one through my hearing aids, and she was the only singer that ever literally hurt my ears

way too shrill and the lack of instruments was boring, do not listen to while hungover

Could only manage one and a half songs. Terrible sound and her voice really annoyed me

Back on the rough streak

too slow. I know she is important for the folk movement of the 60's. just not my thing.

Not for me. I don’t appreciate her style of singing.

I couldnt finish this. This album is so boring. She managed to make House Of The Rising Sun a snoozefest. I tried to listen to this twice and both times I had to give up. Dreadful.

I could not find one thing I liked about this album. Her style does not work for me at all. The worst part is that her version of House of the Rising Sun, a song I've always appreciated, was nearly ruined for me by her performance.

Did not like her voice or Music at all

WoOoOoOoOoOoOo. No thanks.

Nothing for me here. Not listening.

Sorry diva but I wasn’t feeling this one at all

Total waste of time

boring and awful

I really dislike artist's whose only talent is vibrato. It reminds me of my ex leaving me for a rose toy. I only liked Henry Martin.

Not for me.

What a beautiful voice, and it's so clear too. There's nothing novel about it musically, but she was definitely gifted. There's a lot of covers of classic songs, unless she was the original writer of them in which case holy shit, she wrote some widely covered songs. Okay, so I looked it up, and there's 13 covers of traditional folk songs... so yeah no wonder haha.

This is super extra not for me. Like, I'm sure someone finds this amazing or whatever but to me just a waste of time. There's nothing here!

Look, I'm it was a huge album when this came out. But in 2025 i find it dreary. There were a couple of songs that were great, but honestly it isn't for me.

Too folky for me.

Gawd, she doesn't half warble on. Bailed when she murdered House of the Rising Sun.

I like Joan Baez’s voice, but the folk style feels a bit too whimsical for me—not really my thing. It’s like listening to a collection of songs from Robin Hood’s era. Favorite songs: Silver Dagger and House of the Rising Sun were definite highlights. Least favorite: Henry Martin felt pretty dull. Album artwork: Cool cover—it suits the vibe of the album well.

This goes on a bit… this is like what I would imagine an sheep might sing like.

No, this is awful. And even more unbearable through the headphones on second listen, I was wincing at some of the shriekier moments. And there are some lovely traditional songs on here but she strips them of all character and nuance and makes them all sound the same. Not a fan of that scene anyway but this is the worst one yet

Very maudlin, didn't really like her voice

one song in isolation is lovely, but whole album is too much for me. 1

oh my god her fucking voice sucks ass. okay maybe not. i think the vocals are SOOOOO boring. it’s like “ooOoOoooohhhHhHhH😩” BITCH STFU you are not impressing me. even though i can appreciate the beautiful guitar melodies, it all just sounds pretty much the same. oh god i really fucking hate her singing. it is literally just an hour of “ooOooooOoOoJHhHhHhhH😩😩😩” paired with sleepy guitar melodies

if this list has taught me anything then it is that i hate folk. it is slow, no variety, nothing that makes it remotely interesting, exactly what i hate about music x

This may be a matter of taste, but I've never really likes Baez' voice. I think this may be the first time I've listened to one of her albums all the way through, and I didn't find it very enjoyable. I find her voice and singing style dominated the songs and made everything rather harsh. I could only play this once, and it seemed a bit interminable. I get that Baez was a big figure in the folk resurgence and was important as a social activist, but in that context I'm not sure a debut album of covers of traditional songs is so significant.

#445. The combination of folk music and opera wannabe vocals is damn near torturous to listen to. 1/5: fuck me, man

Lauleskelee ja lypsyttää kappaletta nimeltä new orleans. Sovitaan että 1 star ainakun tuo kys. kappale albumille päätyy heh. Tämän albumin kuitenkin arvostelen chilling and wibing scaalalla

How did this album ever make this list? Seriously the single worst album I have ever heard in my life her voice made my teeth inch

I hated this album from beginning to end. Awful singing, bland guitar. Simply terrible.

Jag gillade inte hennes röst

Gear: Dunu SA6 Artwork: 😬🎸👗 Production: 🎧😐🆗 Music: 🌍☮️🙄 Rating: ☮️(☮️)/5

Boring just beyond boring

I didn't like this at all. I just don't really care for her voice or style. The arrangements were too similar, making an otherwise diverse selections of songs into a pretty monotonous album.

I feel like if this was in a movie I loved I would be praising it to no end, but as it stands by itself, this woman’s voice is totally insufferable

Sorry Joan ears bleeding

I really couldnt stand this album. I mean, I guess I can see how some people might be into it, but I just couldnt stand it. 1/5

The best part of this album was when it need and I never have to hear this again. A ghastly album. Utter crap.

Can´t stand the voice. Quit after track 3.

Joan Baez is of course extremely well known and loved by many. I've never been one of her fans and this album doesn't change anything. Typical folk music singing. Songs played at a camp fire by so many. Of course she can sing, of course she can play the guitar ... but there is - in my opinion - simply nothing special at all about this.

not for me

Damn this is old. I've listened to older albums on here like "Birth of Cool" but this just feels so ancient. It's just her and the guitar which is an admirable feat but, it sucks. The guitar is fine but her singing is not for me at all. The fact that nothing else is going on other than the guitar and vocals makes it a very skippable album.

I’m probably going to get kicked out of the senior citizen white American woman club for this, but man do I find her singing hard to listen to! No thank you.

5 seconds was enough for me to make up my mind about it, but I decided to give it another 20 seconds, that being said, can I have my 20 seconds back now?

This was one of the toughest listens in a while and came during a stretch of some very bad albums for this listener. Not much to say except this is something I would never seek out and something I never an to hear again. If this was a top listen in 1960, I'm convinced this was the best year for top quality acid. 1

Awful. Every song was pain. Butchered House of the Rising Sun too

Bile inducing.

Hate the techno

This really felt like it went on forever. Not a big folk music fan and after awhile Joan Baez’s earnest high pitched voice got pretty grating and gave me a headache.

Never listened to Joan Baez before this. Never will again. Magnificent voice and a great storyteller, but just could not handle the music. Felt like I was at a rennasounce fair, and for far too long.

terrible. could not finish.

Avec tes grandes dents là

Sorry not for me

Album feels simple. There was nothing that stood out to me. Just kinda dragged along.

Singer/songwriter, folk, blues, ballads, female, mid/slow, guitar, voice very much in focus, quite fragile, no beat/rhythm, hard to follow, not catching me at all, voice too high and too much tremolo

🤮🤮🤮🤮

First listen Saved 2/13 Top track: House Of The Rising Sun

Boring and seemingly never-ending

Boring as fuck. This album did not aged well...

Not for me 1

Goes on really far too long for someone with a really annoying voice. Also ruins a couple of classics, fuck off.

very big Blue by Joni Mitchell vibes. i hate that album

Not for me personally

BORING

Not a fan of her voice, the guitar is excellent, but I couldn't finish listening to it.

I just can't stand the over vibrato in her voice

Nope, nope, nope... I cannot stand Joan Baez's voice. Fucking pencils in my ears.

Really not my thing at all. I struggled through with the hope of some sort of musical respect but nope, it was terrible.

OMG No. I hated this so much I hated her voice I hated the way her voice quivered and everything. Big no.

Oersaai, irritante stem, niks voor mij.

I mean Baez no disrespect, but this album is like when scientists find the reason why dinosaurs went extinct. In our case it wasn’t a rogue asteroid, but rather the world of music moving away from this yodeling based genre of folk music.

Horribly annoying

Awful, winey voice

All the covers of classics on this album are significantly worse than their original versions, and the originals are nothing to write home about. I really just can't do folk music at all. Favorite track: El Preso Numero Nueve

Not my cup of tea

Really hate folk, country the lot.

So boring. Couldn't even zone out to it because she hits those weird yodeling notes.

very very very pretty voice.

not a fan, however that might be ebcuase i'm not a complete fan of pure country music

I don't understand how people enjoy her singing.

It's country. Not my case.

Oh fucking Christ, more folk rock. 1/5.

Really not for me. I hope her later stuff is better. I tried but really couldn’t listen to any of the tracks all the way through.

The worst

Simplistic and religious. Boring.

Really want to give this 0. What a trash album.

Horrible

The songs were OK but it sounds like it was being sung by a strangled cat.

URGH. sksjfbruqiehrjr. no comment

Insufferable

Not awful, but not for me. Grates a bit. Gets boring. Didn't get through it.
