A beautifully smooth and cremoso album. It is a warm summer night, you are having dinner by the sea which is creating a very welcomed breeze. You smile with your wife and laugh about all the times you fought. I hope you are wearing socks, this is not music for people with bare feet.

This album didn’t do much for me. I think there’s a reason it’s been relegated to being “elevator music”. Maybe it’s meaningful in ways I’m not aware of…

The girl from Ipenema is a classic, a great groovy jazz tune. The rest of the album was nice, an easy listen and great for background sounds

Very emotional, very good, very well made, very beautiful.

It's been a while since I've felt this immersed and captivated by an album. The gentle bossa nova grooves, tender vocals, and rich, silky saxophone really transfixed me, many times to the point of tearing up at the sheer beauty of it all. I'm sure some of the nuance and meaning is lost in translation, but even the translated lyrics are delightful and packed with emotion. Then it's followed up by the most musical, heartfelt instrumental solos you've ever heard and wowww! If you Getz it, you Getz it.

I find Bossa Nova a bit too easy listening for my taste. It’s nice and pleasant but just kind of fades into the background. That said, this album is still very good, and the Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado are two all timer songs. Just jazzy enough to make it a good listen

Normally lyrics in a language I don’t know hinders my enjoyment of music, but this is so lovely it didn’t matter. Obviously Stan Getz is amazing. I haven’t really pursued his catalog, but when one of his works finds me I invariably fall in love with it. And, this is a great antidote to that Sinatra collaboration with Antônio Carlos Jobim we suffered through earlier, which I can now see is an obvious attempt for the ham-fisted, overblown Sinatra to carpetbag onto the success of this Getz/Gilberto work.

I normally can't listen to the album of the day first thing in the morning, but when I saw this one I'm like. Oh Good perfect! Perfect! Perfect album to start an early morning

So good I played it twice, laid back jazz that sweeps over you

One of my favorite jazz albums of all time. Getting to drop the needle makes me really happy when one of these comes up. The musicianship is first class and I find myself listening to this album frequently.

Loved the music and how low stimulation it was. Don’t tend to listen to non-english music but thoroughly enjoyed- The girl from Ipanema being an easily recognizable song settled me into the music quickly though. Overall enjoyed and could see this being a great album to listen to during studying!

Not something I would have ever sought out, but I really enjoyed it. I can see myself playing it quietly while studying or while trying to fall asleep.

“The Girl from Ipanema” is one of my all-time faves. This is a Bossa nova must-have.

I felt like I was whisked away out of my living room drinking my coffee and landed in some far away place in the mountains with the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.

Easy listening.

When I was younger I dismissed this as schmaltzy elevator music. To be fair, this song is playing in the Blues Brothers while they’re in the elevator. But I found a place for this album. It sets a mood.

Not a bad album but it became background music by the end. Just couldn’t hold my attention.

Historically very interesting. First jazz record to win album of the year! I enjoyed the vocals over the relaxed instrumental. Especially the finger picking guitars. Probably won’t revisit but it’s a cool piece of music history and if I saw it in the used bin I’d pick it up for that alone.

This record is very beautiful. The jazzy instruments are so nice to the ear and the vocals are great. I think this is held down by the fact I’m just not that big into jazz and the language barrier does hurt the experience for me in terms of lyricism. Neither of those faults of its own.

A lovely mood

Nothing too spectacular but perfectly fine jazz.

Pre Listen: Never heard of the fellows, but assuming another Portoguese album based on the title/cover. The album art is pretty lowkey, definitely something I'd overlook at a records store. No expectations. Notable Tracks: Girl From Ipanema - While this isn't the original, it is a classic song, and they do it justice here. I was confused why it was included twice on here twice, but I learned from the wiki page after the album that the 2nd inclusion is simply a shorter version included in the 1997 rerelease of the album. Post Listen: I liked this album. It got me sleepy at some points, but in a good way. Getz's Saxophone is a wonderful and welcome addition every time it comes up, it's much appreciated. Gilberto's guitar work is very solid as well, however I'm not much a fan of his vocals, so much as I'm a fan of the female vocalist. Her voice is so soft, like new velvet on a warm day. It's a warm album overall, makes me feel like I'm inside of a warm coffee shop/bakery. It's a very short album if you don't include the two bonus tracks which are just songs from earlier, from the '97 rerelease. I do wish it was a little longer. Best Bossa Nova album I've heard on here to date. 4/5

The best records in my opinion are the ones that manage to be both consistent in production and yet manage to be wonderfully creative. Such is the case of this record, a beautiful Bossa Nova album with vocals that are almost whispers, gentle guitars and Getz's incredible and seductive saxophone. This record defines the sophisticated, soft sound of Bossa Nova music, and the influences it would produce on popular music were substantial. The minimalist, intimate sound of this record really shows that much more can be done much less, all you need are a few key parts.

Stan Getz was an amazing saxophonist, and this collaboration with Joao Gilberto put Bossa Nova on the map. Everyone knows the Girl from Ipanema and it's on here in two versions. The other songs just extend the vibe.

Boring lounge/lift music

If you were looking for an album to kick start your morning and send you into a whirl of productivity, this ain't it. The vibes are chill and beautiful. Your spine is going to turn into al dente pasta, my friend. You may turn on your out of office notifications, twice.

I find it kind of boring. It's beautiful but doesn't do it for me.

Not my type of music but a very pleasant listen. More background music than active listening though. The saxophone sounds caught my attention because it feels like you can hear everything about it, its very intimate and close.. I dont know how to explain that "I can hear the guy blowing air into the instrument, the reed vibrating, every time he puts his mouth on the mouthpiece there is a noise, also when he breathes and when he spits" Vai Brasil, caralho!

Kind of based knowing you have made a banger with Girl from Ipanema, and then just recording and putting it on the album twice. Great album, very enjoyable. At times the sax feels a bit violent, but I suppose it is the centerpiece of the musical arrangement, so why not. This is a four stars, not entirely sure where we land on the decimal point but I suppose pretty close around 4.

Truly fantastic album.

I was glad when it was over, nowhere near the quality of some similar albums we’ve had on the list- the only difference being the Latin American/Spanish vocalist that I could have lived without. Best track- when we had a bit of a vocal I could understand in ‘call me’ oh no wait a minute the album finished and I heard other stuff that sounded exactly the same! For that reason no best track or worst track as I don’t have a clue which is which. And for the fact it bored me, did nothing for my ears and there has been better before and I can almost guarantee still to come it scores a 1/10

Getz/Gilberto Just dull. Sorry. It's not that I don't like jazz or bossa nova or whatever. We've had examples already that were infinitely better. But this was like being stuck on eternal hold, or in the lounge at a poncy city hotel. Again, I don't have a best or worst because they all blended into one. I yes, I do feel a bit guilty cos I'm sure this is as good as it gets for some folks but.....🤷 2.5/10

Had Jazz Samba roughly 250~ albums ago, and Getz/Gilberto is a much bolder album. I mean, The Girl from Ipanema is on it. The original. One of those few songs that outlive the century that it came from. Everything else is just very pleasant and meadow samba to mellow out to with scented candles and good lightning. AI could never replicate the emotions and brain movements Getz/Gilberto could make you feel.

Chill, relaxing, bossa nova. I could chill on the couch listening to this or even fall asleep to it, but that would be okay.

Bossa nova apparently came along right as jazz was having a midlife crisis of sorts - concerned about stagnation, worried about being replaced by something younger and cooler (rock and roll). Figures, then, that this has become the official music of the midlife crisis in popular culture - of Don Draper drinking in a hotel bar, making eyes at some sultry brunette with vaguely Latin features while thinking up a pitch for Lucky Strike or whoever. It also figures that a lot of this album's staying power is derived from the fact that it doesn't sound like it's trying so damn hard all the time; Getz himself is plenty capable of throwing notes out with the best of them but he keeps his melody lines and solos minimal and tasteful for the most part. He's relaxed and so the audience is too. And both Gilbertos sound like they just woke up from one pleasant dream and into another one. It's hangout music in the best way.

Old school mumble rap - they kinda suave widdit

Bossa Nova is a guilty pleasure of mine and I've listened to this album quite a bit before but this one is pretty mid despite it containing several og Bossa Nova Standards (which is probably the only reason it's on the list). Fun fact: I've personally played some really fun arrangements of Ipanema and Corcovado made by the bassist in the Morgan Orchestra and his arrangements are pretty stellar. Fav: Corcovado L: honestly might be The Gorl from Ipanema 3 But she doesn’t see. She just doesn’t see. No she doesn’t see. But she doesn’t see. I don’t see what the big deal is. I listened to it intently and then while I was doing chores. It was kind of boring listening to it intently but decent at being background music. Maybe there’s something deeper there but I’m not seeing it. Also Portuguese kind of melts my brain when I hear it, not a problem of the language just a problem with my brain hearing like Slavic Spanish but I guess that’s sort of what Romanian is.

I had a lot of thoughts but I can't be bothered to write them. Basically the different instruments interplay with each other in a way that paints a story. Kinda like Peter and the wolf or something. Bossa nova isn't my favorite of the jazzes, but this is probably peak bossa. Sometimes the chords and claves feel a little samey, but it's a lovely, cool vibe start to finish. Also it's refreshing to hear a language other than English. W: girl from Ipanema L: none 4.5/5

Het ultieme zondag ochtend album. Met een door mijn vriendinnetje croissantje en de pistachecreme en een overheerlijke koffie. Dit is gewoon genieten.

Ik dacht “he leuk Stan Getz, dat is die artiest van the girl from ipanema” . Nu heb ik daarna de rest van het album geluisterd en dat vond ik niet echt nodig. Een goed nummer maakt niet een goed album. De rest is prima maar niet dat ik denk dit album moet je echt geluisterd hebben. Het Portugees klinkt mooi, de muziek klinkt dromerig. Prima niet vervelend ook niet om wild van te worden.

Ja, prima maar ook weer niet. Bij het eerste nummer word je nog op het verkeerde been gezet door Astrud Gilberto die nog wat ongepolijst heeft. Daarna is het allemaal niet zo spannend en uitdagend. Je hoopt op meer. Het zit net zoals bij andere albums bijvoorbeeld we van Ry Cooder hebben gehoord ook weer in de Amerikaanse cross-over die toch een beetje wringt op culturele authenticiteit. Er is betere bosa Nova en er is betere jazz. Ook op Gilberto eigen albums. Maar zit een beetje te zeiken. Saai, beetje gladjes, van alles net niks maar tis oké, ook als je in de lift staat.

Fijn album, zeker in de ochtend. Je droomt er lekker bij en het is erg oorverwennerig. Tis ook geen geheim dat ik van rustige muziek hou, daarom is het een welkome afwisseling tussen deze lijst, wat toch wel vol staat met veel gitaargeweld. Over gitaar gesproken, ik ben erg gecharmeerd van de Spaanse gitaar, wat grappig is, is dat wij het hier een Spaanse gitaar noemen, in Latijns-Amerika noemen ze het simpelweg "gitaar". Klinkt heerlijk voor het bossa nova genre. de Saxy was ook sexy.

The poster child of Bossa Nova, it is a super memorable listen that is able to maximize the talents of each of the four geniuses behind these tracks. While completely magnificient in all qualities, it is also a great entrypoint to the genre which feels rare being such acclaimed while having almost no barrier to entry. 9/10 [KEEP]

I understood this genre, and thought that it’s probably a good example of the genre it is, but I didn’t like it. It sounds like Laufey and KK Slider.

A very mellow and pleasant jazz record, perfect for relaxing on a summer's afternoon. "The Girl from Ipanema" is the obvious stand out track but I enjoyed the whole album and wouldn't be averse to listening to it again sometime in the near future. The sound quality was great, too.

The Girl From Ipanema is a great song...although I am hesitant to put it in list of best debut album first tracks because jazz collaborations aren't quite the same as bands or solo artists. Desafinado is on the Getz/Byrd album too. It's a good song, I prefer the instrumental version. I don't know what it is but the jazz/samba combo gets me...Getz and Gilberto or Sinatra and Jobim, it just works. This is the soundtrack to a Woody Allen movie set in Brazil.

Whether it is a cocktail party or just soundtracking your morning coffee, the bossa nova stylings of Stan Getz and João Gilberto will put you at ease. The guitar, piano and light percussion are in the background whilst the saxophone and the vocals gets the spotlight. These production choices all feel calculated to ensure that the listener can feel as relaxed as possible. This is a great gateway to get yourself into jazz. It may not be as technically impressive as anything you could find on a John Coltrane or Miles Davis record, but the immaculate vibes this thing brings more than makes up for it.

Really like this album, it's so calming and soothing. And brings you the feeling of longing to something you haven't experienced before.

I bet Stan and João really hate The Blues Brothers. The Girl From Ipanema sounds like an actual comedy song, or some funny meme joke, rather than a real song. Its a nice tune, but it's so tied to the cliche of elevator music that it's hard to even sit in the same room as it without feeling a bit silly. It's got to be a 2, but it's not really it's fault. I just can't put this on anywhere and maintain any level of social respect

this was a fine jazz album. I had a ptsd flashback of singing girl from Ipanema with my high school jazz band with that teacher that ended up destroying my senior year. Perhaps they could have chosen a different album to better showcase Stan's saxophone skills.

It's been 100+ albums since we've had anything like this, so I appreciated the change of pace. Also, it was nice hearing Astrud again. However... I truly, truly hate saxophone solos. I seem to be OK when they're relegated to background support, but like the harmonica, once a sax takes center stage, I have a very real physical reaction. In fact, at one point near the 30-minute mark, I reflexively ripped my headphones off yelping in pain at a particularly blaring bit. I'm not sure where this trigger comes from, and unfortunately, I can't afford the required therapy to investigate this right now - but suffice it to say, this has to be a hard fail for personal reasons.

It was fine at first. Refreshing even. But man did I get tired of that damn saxophone.

This was very good background music. Has good flow and the opener - The Girl from Ipanema - is a classic. None of the songs are bad and the album flows well. It is short, which I think is good for this type of music as it could get repetitive.

I have heard a couple of these songs before but did not know the artist. Easy listening. 9.2/10

I really loved this album. I think it’s a beautiful album and definitely up there as an absolute classic. The vocals are so soft and the brass accompaniment is really complimentary. Bossanova is always great to listen to, I understand why some people think it’s repetitive but that’s also the genre itself built out of a rhythm. I think it’s a great album start to finish, no weaknesses.

I think this is one of Simon's favorite albums.

Not my music, but surprisingly I like it

Something I've said in a few reviews so far, is that I'm quite fond of saxophone parts in songs. And here we are, an album where the sax takes prime position! And gosh, is it ever wonderful! There's also some quite recognisable, iconic even, backing tracks here too - I thought that this album may have been their original composition, though a search casts doubt on that. I can't penalise the album for this, but I do feel that my enjoyment would have been greater could I understand the lyrics, outside of the small amounts of English which the lady is singing. Right now, I am quite thoroughly relaxed. It being 2245 in the evening contributes to that, sure. But this album is nonetheless extremely soothing, and great for destressing.

I’m a big fan of Brazilian and Latin influences on jazz I think they go really well together. This album was critical to the future of this style. Not to mention the intro tracks reception in the 60s was immense. Still this album can get repetitive and some songs are almost filler. 8.5/10

Everyone started doing bossanova, and The Girl From Ipanema is a beautiful song, it should be in the jazz hall of fame, if it's not already. I have not been a big fan of the non-English albums on this list, but this one was a pleasure to listen to.

Getz/Gilberto is one of those rare albums that lives up to its legendary reputation. I liked it a lot from start to finish. Stan Getz's saxophone has a warm, effortless sound that perfectly complements João Gilberto's understated guitar and vocals. The album blends jazz and Brazilian bossa nova beautifully, and every track feels smooth without ever becoming repetitive. Been blessed by some all-timers lately. I already loved this album, so it’s an easy 5. It’s more Getz Bossa Nova but this is the one with Girl from Ipanema. How could it not get a 5?

I don't know what to make of this album. It sounds nice, but it doesn't feel like something I would listen to again. I love the musical style, but It's been 'background music-ized' into oblivion, that's all I hear out of this.

It was a great experience, not my go to genre to be honest, but I ended up enjoying it.

I fell asleep while writing this review.

Gold, a must listen. The combination of Gilberto's melodies and Getz instrumentation is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. It doesn't need to be varied because it's just so excellent. It might be a perfect album to me if I listen some more, but for now it's just very incredible.

Nice easy listening Latin American jazz

Restrained to the point of minimalism this cool, sparse record is about as seductive as records are allowed to be. Probably some people will see it as superior elevator music, but the beauty of the arrangements and the delicacy of the performances make this very special. The elevator music they have in Heaven.

Another enjoyable jazz album, but this time with an international flare. The music was smooth and the vocals slid right in. There is nothing abrasive about these songs. Very enjoyable.

Legendary bossa nova album, groundbreaking and beautiful work and colloboration between american jazz scene and brasilian samba to create something new and unique. Clearly easily at least 4 stars and 4.5 on RYM, but not sure if this will reach perfect 5 for me, maybe. P.S. After already multiple re-listens this morning, already being familiar well with this work and all, I decided that it really can reach 5 stars for one simple reason. When it comes to Bossa Nova there are a few great works to choose from, but this one will almost always be the premier choise when it comes to discovering the greatness of this genre. This is seminal work.

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto (1964) It was similar to C'est Chic in the sense that was it more for listening in the background. Having said that, the hispanic vibe it gave and hushed voices from the singers made it enjoyable. If I had to pick an album to listen to work to, it would be this one. Very nice, gentle music. I like it.

The classic intro to bossa nova, and it still sounds as good as when I first heard it. There’s a reason that this sound invokes the exact same scene in everyone’s head as it’s been the background for so many films and shows without anyone even really knowing. I really enjoy this style of music, as corny as it can sound to some people, and I really like the way Portuguese sounds when sang. The sax playing is so smooth and the grooves are so smooth and everything is so freaking smooth. Just perfect mood music for taking it easy.

I like desafinado , I like the rhythm and the voice. It's more like a got day living room music, not elevator:D need special atmosphere to enjoy 4.8!

It's fine. Sounds like the same song over and over again. It's very background music at a chill spot where it sets, or underscores, an emotional tone. It's not trying to blow you away but hit a vibe and maintain that. It does that well.

Masterpiece, every detail, every song has a vibe and makes this sounds great original and with a trademark.

It's pleasant but nothing happens

Super chill album, nice to listen to bossa nova. It really reminded me of peace after getting an aux cable to listen to our old dvd player and watch the summer afternoon move with a slight breeze the trees outside while in bed, I finally was at peace after a really long time I longed for it, I forgot I was searching for it. But of course it had to be one minute after my oasis got infiltrated again, just after completing it. Such is the way of life I guess.

Another heatwave in the UK and another beautiful summery album. You’re immediately transported to 1960s Rio de Janiero, where the man wear light linen suits, sit outside cafe shops near the beach and watch the girls go by. Amazing

Among the finest jazz albums I've ever listened to. Every track is a gem. I don't think, even if this isn't your kind of music, that there is a note out of place. When I chuck out a 5-star (and this is just for me) I typically do it because the album is perfect in its vein. This is a perfect smooth jazz album. It wouldn't be a perfect boss-brass or old-school boom-bap album. It is a reaaallly bad country album. Damn it is a tasty jazz album though.

Classic album - funny that this is Getz's most famous even though he made much better recordings. Love that this is the album that introduced Jobim to the United States.

This is a great album. Soft, easy - background music but I mean that in the best way possible. Such a nice way to start a morning or end a day.

Hearing all the classic sounds that have found their ways into soundtracks, and global memories was a lovely experience. We humans are the definition of reuse.

88/100 God what a peaceful album this is. I’m at work right now on a cloudy day at a marina gas dock listening to this album while sitting next to the water. Perfectly done bossa nova although it does get kinda samey. Maybe that’s because I don’t speak the language lmao so I can’t hear any lyrical differences. Some songs have sax which it’s always amazing to hear it, and others have a nice accompanying piano. This album is loved by many and for good reason. It can put you at peace in an instant. Just great stuff all around, and I love it.

This was a very soothing, calming album that provided beautiful saxophone segments and this serves as a album to sit and listen to or to slow dance to. Astrud Gilberto provides a very beautiful voice throughout some of the songs. The references to places in brazil are also very nice. Does get a bit repetitive but still a great album

Hell yeah more non-Anglo music Bossa Novas are so cool, just an incredibly captivating pattern that almost guarantees I’ll like a song. Vocals are great, instrumentation is great, and the overall sound is just this wonderful blend of Brazilian jazz. Don’t really have many complaints about this one, little confused why there were a couple of copies of some songs on here so I guess it felt a little repetitive at times? That’s about all I can think of Not quite a 5 but damn close, I feel like if I listened to this on a beach with a cold drink in my hand this would be the greatest album of all time but alas

Wonderful. This is such an incredibly enjoyable album to listen to, a real treat after a rather lackluster previous week. I’ve marked a few tracks as favorites, but honestly, I could do that for the entire album. What a fantastic record. It features a blend of jazz and samba (which, admittedly, neither have ever been one of my favorites) topped with a touch of soul. It puts you in a summery mood… this is the quintessential summer evening album for sitting out on the patio.

I've heard about this album, and recognize a few track titles, but have never listened to this album start-to-finish. I'm looking forward to it. This is great. I'll be adding it to my list of albums to listen to again.

Don't know much about boss nova, but a good, fun time. Glad I got to listen to the start of the genre's popularity.

This might be one of my new favorite albums. I knew 'the girl from Ipanema' before listening to the album, but the other songs are just as good and give that same mellow, light vibe that i love so much. Definitely adding this to my regular rotation!!

A great bossa nova jazz album that was the first non-American album to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. This is the music I want to be played at a sleepy beach bar on a beautiful day. Not super complicated, very relaxing Brazilian jazz with a little bit of dance flair here and there. Really enjoyed this album, it’s a solid 4/5 for me.

not a lot of stand out favourites in this album. i wouldn't say i'm a huge fan of bossa nova, but this is one of the classic albums of that genre. very soft and mellow throughout, i'd put this on when i want to slow down.

Arguably the most iconic bossa nova album in existence. Phenomenal instrumentation with a cohesive feel but enough variation to hold your attention.

Boring. It conjures a mood, that’s for sure, but that mood is one of languid boredom. Give me exotica music from the era instead – at least that had some genuine eccentricity. Best track: “The Girl From Ipanema”

I got so excited when I saw I would be listening to a bossa nova AND jazz album! Two of my most loved genres!! Incredible, honestly such a perfect album. I loved all of the songs. I don't know how an album can be so soothing but thrilling (in the sense that it was such a musical masterpiece) but Getz and Gilberto do a wonderful job. Asturd Gilberto's voice is so gorgeous!! Fave Songs: Desafinado, Corcovado, Sólo Danço Samba, Vivo Sonhando

This album is equivalent nursing a nice, cool drink in your hands as you watch the sunset on a beautiful beach whose name you can't pronounce. And somewhere between the fading moon and palm leaves, you see a woman walk wearing a skirt that moves to the rhythm of the sea. You're not sure if she's walking towards you or walking right past you. But it doesn't matter as the weight of the evening's breeze settles over your closing eyes.

Really enjoyed this one. Great listen on a cloudy unsettled day. A real mood lifter. That said, in terms of musical styles this would never be super high on my rotation.

Cool bossa nova album, great for just relaxing and watching the birds. It is a bit on the easy listening side.

This was the first time I gave a serious chance to bossa nova, and I can say that it was a great experience! While it still is not my cup of tea, I really enjoyed it nonetheless and definitely see the appeal of the genre as a whole. The mellow guitar draws you in and makes you want to stay for the slow, yet exciting ride.
