Reviews (page 11 of 13)

I knew a large number of the tracks which made me feel a little more cool. Enjoyable album.

The old school cheese doubled back around into being kinda fun.

Some good songs and other fillers. Good listening. Favourite track: Walk this way, with Aerosmith.

Not bad

The first half contains the 3 songs I know and I like it. the second half is okay but forgettable.

Fun walk down memory lane!

It's good stuff for Run-D.M.C. as usual!

Easy 3. Solid album which really set the pace of modern rap. Walk this way is too meta

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: i did but in general they are rather repetitive with flows and delivery so it becomes boring quickly Favourite song: Track 2 - It’s Tricky

Paras old school -räppilevy tähän asti, pisteitä koska mukana suosikkibiisink It's Tricky. Myös tyylikäs kansi. Huumoria ja sopivassa määrin

A game changer album for sure. Fun, nostalgic and including hits like "It's Tricky", "My Adidas" and the excellent "Walk This Way" featuring Aerosmith. I do feel some dated vibes here and there, but they don't spoil the quality.

Great album ! Songs are all a bit the same but an upbeat and love ale album that shouts what RUN DMC stand for which is rock and roll with rap and love !

It's Tricky (to rate this album)

Loved some of the tracks, others I did not enjoy nearly as much

Felt quite cheesy, used lullabies as lyrics and just rhymed. Interesting to see where modern day rap has come from

It's a low three, but it barely avoided a two. A lot of it was boring to me, but there were a few stand outs. I didn't like Walk This Way, but I don't like the original song, so it's kinda set up for failure for me. I don't mind the verses of the song, but Steven Tyler's part... why does he sound like he's dying... Anyway, I'm not super into Hip Hop, so I wasn't going to love this or anything. There's kinda some emptiness in the beats and they were boring. I respect it, but it's not my cup of tea. My favourite song was You Be Illin'.

This album isn’t Perfection it was bad…bad meaning good. LFS: Hit it Run the beatboxing 😬 also Dumb Girl pretty dumb. Just because they’d rather fuck Jay-Z doesn’t mean you get to call them names I don’t think it’s going to get you more booty. In hindsight the Dumb Girls definitely made the right choice. WIL2IA? 🤷‍♀️Some songs but not the album as a whole.

Fun album. That’s all I got.

Really solid hip-hop. I'm listening to this album for the first and it's crazy how I recognize so many of the beats because they've been in sampled in other tracks over the years. It shows the level of influence these guys had on the industry. The guys are right, it IS tricky to rock a rhyme that's right on time - but they do it. It's Tricky and Walk This Way are the top tracks for me.

I don't think I've ever heard a whole album of theirs before but there are some absolute classics here. Thought I would have enjoyed it more but songs about Adidas trainers, and KFC just don't resonate with me. Highlights: It's Tricky Walk This Way

Proper old school. Probably didn't enjoy this at much as I thought I would. A lot more similar to beastie boys than I thought too, but perhaps less fun! Knew it's tricky and walk this way. Enjoyed it but not sure enough to go back

Wasn’t bad just wasn’t feeling this vibe today. Probably was the coolest shit back in the day but it’s another classic rap album that sounds very dated. Don’t wanna give it a bad rating cuz I get why people would love this kinda thing so I’m sticking with a 3. The drum fills at the end of perfection are cool. 👍: perfection, hit it run Guess for peder’s art rating: 7/10 and will say something about the color scheme and font

Ok so I was gonna immediately start calling it corny and cheesy. That I can’t even hear how this has influenced todays music, but then I got to thinking. This hip hop comes from a different mind, a different set of ideas and feelings than our modern hip hop comes from. This is for people who wanna DANCE. For people who bring their unapologetic self and not giving af. Record scratching? Grand master flash? Undeniably HUGE for not just hiphop but all of music. I’m grateful for it.

Run DMC are what they are. Socially iconic with some great hits but I think they miss a lot outside of that. Not a fan of the shared vocals on the same line and a lot of the non-famous tracks sound the same. Think it's telling that when Aerosmith come in they go to another level that Run DMC can't get to themselves, with maybe the exception of the title track, which has some rock influence anyway.

This is the mainstream rap/hip hop I grew up hearing thanks to music television (MuchMusic) and the album was a huge hit and definitely helped to popularize the genre. Listening now, it feels like a parody of rap and I can't take the music seriously. With that being said, it's listenable and a good non-threatening gateway entry to the genre if you like this sort of thing.

A more promising start than the last Run DMC album but quickly devolved into the same boring shit that infested it's predecessor. An extra star (or two) because Peter Piper and It's Tricky were actually massive tunes for me to discover in year 8.

Last morning in Milan. Fly to Marrakech today. Monday 27th March.

A classic that's a bit dated today.

Love the DMC and there are certainly some tracks on here but I never felt albums were their best format

A nice timecapsule of mid 80s rap music.

Aged badly

Some fun songs here, mostly It's Tricky. It's 1986 rap though. Pretty cheesy and silly by today's standards. Solid 3.

Starts off with banger after banger, but the second half of the record kind of kills the vibe for me. It's a classic hip-hop album for sure, but I only really enjoyed the first half.

At last, a hip-hop album that isn't too long! And some of the tunes, especially "It's Tricky" and "Walk this Way" are terrific, and I guess they helped open up rap to a wider audience. It's just a shame that some of the lyrics are a bit dodgy.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of 80's Hip-Hop, but I always find the reaction it gets from people to be very overblown and overly negative. There's still plenty of charm, fun lines and you can always rely on the beats to be crazy good. This is basically the experience I both expected, and proceeded to have, with this album. I very much enjoyed this experience despite a few lesser cuts (You Be Illin' and Dumb Girl were both pretty bad, especially one after the other), mostly because the hits on here hit hard. Make no mistake either, this record was a HIT. The first platinum Hip-Hop album ever, the record that legitimized the genre as more than just a single creating fad. Honestly if any record had to have the honor of this feat in the 80's, I'm glad it was the one with Walk This Way on it (an all time classic, do NOT trust any 'people' that hate this track) Highlights: Its Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith), Raising Hell

Makes me want to watch fresh prince Didn't realize how many of these songs I know Dumb dumb du du dumb dumb du dumb

Tykkäsin, ei muuta kommentoitavaa.

Tää on jotenkin vielä sellanen positiivinen räppiplatta! Tekniikka juuri sopivan alkeellista makuuni, ja räpit tiukkaa riimiä riimin perään! 3/5

There are some amazing classics on here. You Be Illin' is so good. But, throughout, I just could shake the thought that this just feels like such a relic. It has a sound that clearly comes from the early to mid 80s. Hip hop got much better just a few years later. But all in all, a fun album

blah blah ~Oh! A Tiktok hit, I did not expect that at all! blah blah blah Is that an Aerosmith cover? blah blah blah blah blah Oh God, why the raspberry blowing sample? blah blah blah blah Wow, "You Be Illin'" is surprisingly groovy. blah blah blah. Oh, it's over. What a surprisingly underwhelming work, especially considering how mind blowing their debut was. I guess it's undeniably influential though.

Not my style of music, but it is good to know that this album is influential to the music scene.

Raising Hell is often considered one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time, and it played a significant role in bringing hip hop into the mainstream. While the album certainly has its merits, it is not immune to some of the criticisms that apply to 80s hip hop as a whole. One of the main criticisms of 80s hip hop, the production quality, also applies to Raising Hell. The album's beats and instrumental tracks can sound a bit dated compared to modern hip hop music. For example, some of the samples used on the album may not sound as crisp or polished as contemporary producers would like. However, it's important to note that Raising Hell was groundbreaking in its time and helped to establish many of the production techniques that continue to be used in hip hop today. Another aspect of 80s hip hop that has not aged well is the lyrical content, which is also present in Raising Hell. While many of the album's lyrics deal with themes like street life, partying, and hip hop culture, some of the language and references used can be seen as outdated or even offensive. For example, the use of homophobic language in the song "Proud to Be Black" may be difficult for some listeners to reconcile with today's more progressive values. On the other hand, Raising Hell features some of Run-DMC's most memorable and influential tracks, including "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way," a collaboration with rock band Aerosmith. The album also features the classic hip hop anthems "My Adidas" and "Peter Piper," which continue to be popular with hip hop fans today. Additionally, Run-DMC's distinctive vocal delivery and rhyme style have had a lasting impact on the genre and influenced many subsequent generations of hip hop artists. While Raising Hell is a seminal album that helped to shape the sound and direction of hip hop, it is not immune to the criticisms that apply to 80s hip hop as a whole. Given that, it remains an important part of the genre's history and continues to be influential today.

It never occurred to me the influence these guys had on the Beastie Boys.

I don't enjoy the style of yell rapping and if anything besides proud to be black made any sort of important statement it went over my head. At least it didn't seem harmful. Really not my thing. 3 stars.

I struggle to rate ones like this. In 1986, this was probably a 10/10 album, but it doesn't hold up quite as well today. It's still a great album, it just gets a little stale by the end. I still enjoyed it quite a bit though. 7/10.

I know it was influential but it's not extremely memorable. I also don't like Walk This Way very much, mostly because I don't like Aerosmith very much, although I appreciate how groundbreaking it was and the impact it had on the industry.

Who knew walk this way could be made rap. Not me. Pretty decent

Me gustaron los temas mas conocidos, pero dsps tengo q escuchar mas hip hop p q me guste

Bombos ama eglenceli bi albüm

I recognize for its contribution and the way that it moved rock-rap forward. I do really like Raising Hell and You Be Illing. It new and game changing, but today it feels more one note. I don't need to listen to it much more, but still an important listen.

It's clear this is an early hip hop album. The beats are kind of basic compared to what is being made now and the flow and rhymes are very standard (AABB rhyme scheme, and every line fits neatly into each measure). I do have to commend the use of the guitar though, and it's undeniable that Walk This Way is a great song. It's hard to fairly evaluate an album like this as someone who was born in the 21st century and who doesn't have a very extensive background in hip hop (aside from Excursions and Illmatic I guess)

This album has some real gems (It's tricky, Walk this way, You be illin'), but most of the rest of the album just doesn't do it for me.

Roligare lyssning blir det i 'Peter Piper', 'My Adidas', och främst 'You Be Illin''. Gillar faktiskt även 'Walk This Way' - någonting har den, även om jag har en vag känsla av att jag borde skämmas för att jag tycker det? Recensionen låter kanske negativare än vad det faktiskt var, stabil 3:a ändå. Bästa låt: You Be Illin'.

Was a bit of fun.

Wow, where to begin. This record is great, but it also might be the biggest troll record I've ever encountered. I don't know what is trolling harder, this record or this list's inclusion of this record to listen to. Run-D.M.C. is great, everyone knows it. This album rips, and is grooving along and right when it should be peaking in to it's middle section, Steven Tyler comes in and just totally destroys all the goodwill this album had been building and working towards. Steven Tyler is one of the worst front men of one of the worst bands in history, and it's honestly downright appalling that Run-D.M.C. collaborating with them. The result is shocking--as if you've just been slapped in the face--and you're left recoiling to pick up the pieces and try to make sense of it. And it's so tough, the rest of album is decent too, but you're just so gobsmacked by the utter audacity of that track that you can't listen to it objectively any longer. Top drawer trolling all around. As a bit of a note: I also fired up the music video for that abhorrent collaboration, and it begins with Aerosmith in some shitty studio riffing on that song sounding like garbage, and Run-D.M.C. are next door banging on the wall and pleading with them to turn it down, which yeah, your initial reaction is "Fuck yeah Run-D.M.C., you guys are right, we are with you, you are speaking for the whole self-respecting world, pleading with these talentless bozos to spare us from their horrible music. Power to you Run-D.M.C.!" And then they are like, we'll show them, and turn their speakers towards the adjoining wall, and you are thinking: "Oh they're really going to give them the business now! Fuck yeah!" And inexplicably, they start playing their version of that horrible song. It only takes 35 seconds of that music video to flip the script. Masterful troll job. If I was in my 20s when this came out, I would have been furious upon my first viewing. All of this is to say, it's impossible to look at this record objectively, which is just all too tragic.

A lot of these classic records just aren't aging well. Those 808's sounded amazing back in the day. Istill think this record is good. But it's a lot more difficult to lose myself in it.

Maybe one drawback to this list is realizing I don’t like Run-DMC as much as I thought. I’d easily rather listen to this in full than their self-titled debut. There’s more variety between songs, and the “Walk This Way”/“It’s Tricky” combo alone makes this a classic in my ears. 3.5 HL: “It’s Tricky” (a 5 star song), “Walk This Way”, “Raising Hell”, “You Be Illin”, “Proud to Be Black” December 22, 2022

Chillan

Decent Rap album, personally not the biggest fan of the "couple of guys yelling one after each other"-style to rap

goofy and nostalgic sfw jams that feel very ironic almost 40 years later. like they're going to rap about how I shouldn't download a car. the rhymes, beats, and overall vibe are a bit simplistic to hold one's attention for a full album, but there's some bops here. 3.5/5

- perfection is fun 👌🏼 - obvs already love It’s Tricky and Walk This Way - Overall, style isn’t necessarily mine. Bit jarring? Unexpected sounds rather than smooth? But still fun

The problem is yesterday's album was Enter the Wu Tang which is so much more hard edged and in my view innovative. This seems bland in comparison. I know it's an unfair comparison and this was the first big hip-hop crossover etc etc but I also remember Sugarhill gang and Grandmaster Flash who did it even earlier and had a fresh vital sound.

This has some true hip hop classics on it, but really feels dated.

Super cheesy and super mediocre lyrically, but the first 4 tracks are absolute anthems. The last 8 songs are all interchangeable and mediocre. Hiphop has matured a lot since.

IT'S TRICKY TO ROCK A RHYME, TO ROCK A RHYME THAT'S RIGHT ON TIME, IT'S TRICKY, TR-TR-TR-TRICKY, TRICKY, TRRRRRRICKY! Stuð!

I remember some of these songs. Pretty tame rap these days.

Begins like a Greatest Hits. Very spare vocal and drums. Little bit too shouty. Very old school. Not aggressive. "Hits" are good.

Some good tracks but a lot of the delivery is quite monotonous. Beats are also a mixed bag.

Enjoyed this more than most early hip-hop. Maybe it's because of the rock aspects. I wish I enjoyed this sort of thing more, but it gets really repetitive. The focus is on the lyrics/vocals, and that is just not my focus in music. 3.25/5

Kind of sparse beats, a few interesting quotes.

Old school rap, was like listening to oldies. Purer somehow...

There’s some good tracks on here.

This had a few real good songs, but the rest were very samey; they basically have one style of rapping they always fall back on and I feel like they fell back on it too much here

Didn't get the love for this at the time, and still think it's a poor effort. Not really "fun" rap like Sugarhill Gang etc. earlier, and pretty weak compared to Public Enemy or even LL Cool J. Boring beats and one-note shouty rhymes, like the similarly overhyped Beastie Boys. Walk This Way is definitive, but only because the original is terrible. Barely scrapes a 3 for historical purposes

it's tricky en walk this way babyyyy

Not bad

Amazing to hear how many hip-hop tropes came from this album. A generally enjoyable listen, but I have to deduct one star for Aerosmith’s inclusion.

Some catchy tunes

In honour of Adidas, 3 stripes, 3 stars.

Very listenable, generic 1986 rap? Check.

first listen i actually pictured breakdancing

I want to give it a sentimental 4 but really there's so much filler

some songs (like the aerosmith feature one) genuinely slap but others are pretty boring

Prefs: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, Raising Hell, You Be Illin' Moins pref: Hit It Run

peter piper, it's tricky, is it live, you be illin,

It was pretty good, I enjoyed quite a few songs off of the album.

For its time, this album is extremely experimental and 1 of a kind. Its not my favourite, but i have nothing but appreciation for the foward thinking energy that RUN-DMC bring to the table. (Also , those gawd damn riffs... shhhhhheeeshhhh) Best: walk this way Worst: Adidas

Some more OG hip hop. I can always recognize the impact these dudes had on the genre but tbh their style isn't my favorite. Crazy that Walk This Way really broke hip hop into the mainstream. I think a lot of people discount the actual difference Run DMC made in hip hop. That being said, imo the album just doesn't age that well due to the structure of the rhymes. I definitely prefer the more lyrical, creative acts in this age like Rakim, Kool G Rap, etc.

Fantastic

I obviously loved walk this way but otherwise found this too old for my ears. Don't understand the hype

Old skool hip hop...a bit shouty. A bit repetitive at times...but the energy. Some classics. Solid 3

I need to start out with this Caveat. I like hip hop, and I know how iconic and important Run-D.M.C. is to the entire genre. With that being said, this album is just okay. The album starts by exemplifying the groups natural chemistry. The word play and the coordination on these songs is out of this world. My issue is due to all of the repetition on the album. I get that Raising Hell came out in the 80s, but the loud snare beats on every song knock this down a peg. Maybe it was my speakers, or the audio mixing for spotify, but the beats drowned out the rapping many times. If I really enjoyed the beats, maybe this wouldn't be as big of an issue, but I just didn't. With similar beats and flows on every song, it was hard to differentiate between songs, and they all blended together in my mind. This album has great and classic songs, but it is not built to listen to all at once. Best Songs: It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Proud to be Black Worst Songs: Dumb Girl, Son of Byford

It's Tricky and Walk this Way are the stand out tracks.

Classic for a reason, but listening to the full album the hooks/beats/flows all sort of blend together.

Really lost steam after the two classic songs. 6/10

Lots of catchy and fun songs. I really enjoyed the first half of the record, up to and including "Perfection". The cover of "Walk this Way" was brilliant. However I found the second half of the record got boring and repetitive. I especially disliked "Hit It Run".

Okay, about what you'd expect

this was interesting. it felt like my white ass mom's idea of rap lol. the beats were simple and it was overall kind of goofy, but there were also times that it sounded like a proto-Beastie Boys.

Standard stuff really

Liked the Aerosmith song

Undeniably old school. I haven't listened to much from Run-DMC, in fact the one thing I think of is that I think Alex used to watch a sitcom starring Rev Run called Run's House? There's a couple signature hits on here, but overall this style is just very outdated for me. The beats are super rudimentary, and while I certainly respect it as foundational, it's just not the kind of classic hip hop that I seek out. I enjoy '90s stuff a lot more. It's alright. Favorite tracks: Walk This Way, It's Tricky, You Be Illin'. Album art: I've seen this one a lot before. The colors are nice but it's pretty basic. Very much of its era. 3/5

Definitely some cracking songs on here, but some show their age. The melding of rap and rock is good and I still love Walk This Way. Not so keen on the track about a ‘dumb girl’. Could do better.

3.6 - The Atari equivalent of rap. It’s obviously crude - the beats and rhymes are simplistic considering how far hip hop has evolved. But there’s an elegance in the craft and I’m struck by how well the sound holds up. I just want to pop this cassette into a boom box and carry it around on my shoulder. I also hear the beginnings of so many different strains in hip hop that would eventually blossom through other artists, like the call and response style perfected by the Beastie Boys. Similar to an Atari game, on some rare occasions it feels good to revisit an art form in its near-infancy.

A few great classics. A few misses. Over all good shit.

Alright, actually.

What a brilliant idea to take some nursery rhymes that literally ANYONE can relate to, and throwing them over some sick beats! I know it feels kind of cheesy now, but thinking back to how new and different it was at the time, I am sooo impressed with the innovation.

The production is sharper if it's possible, lyrical exchanges still impeccable. After the initial stretch of songs, there seem to be fewer ideas. The formula was perfect for the record-as-product; With about as many worthy riffs as the debut, it feels like a step sideways.

Frábær plata.

I liked it then, and it’s ok now. Kind of groundbreaking at the time, so that’s valuable. A fun listen but more for nostalgic reasons.

She brought rock to poetry

Decent listen. Lower than expected production value with uneven mixing.

Very solid. May return to it.

After the nostalgia wore off, it got repetitive. The singles still hold up and maybe the rest would be good in small doses.

Hitit edelleen helvetin kovia eikä muukaan levy mitään ihan huttua ollut. Kolmonen on liian vähän ja nelonen taas yläkanttiin.

Wow, this album is 35 yrs old, this is OG as OG gets. Its interesting how rap has changed over the years but its still a fun and somewhat cheezy romp. I hate Aerosmith but I must say this restyling of Walk this way is pretty good and a helluva lot better than the original version.

Rapping was a bit raw in places

Good album, the dawn of the sample hip hop NY era

It's a very good record. The rhymes, the wordplay, the delivery are all excellent. Of course, the hits are top notch and have stood the test of time. Some of the other tracks I find a bit samey - many are just backed by simple 808 beats on loop - though that puts more focus on the rhymes, so not necessarily a bad thing. At times the drum sounds are a bit harsh for me, but I suppose that is the sound they were going for. Definitely a highly important and influential album, though I might be tempted to head straight for the hits in future.

Unarguably important and influenial, but by today's standards, quite outdated rock-inspired hip-hop. Was worth a listen, but I didn't enjoy it as much as their debut.

This is the alblum that got me to listen to something other than my hard rock. Opened me up to a whole new world. So much fun to hear again

So it's like Beasties Boys, but not as good? What am I missing here. A high 2, but giving the benefit of the doubt here and assuming my 'I don't like rap' is getting in the way

Appreciate their rhythm & rhyme skills!

Some good stuff, some not so good

Seminal hip hop anthems, and a fun crossover with Aerosmith.

Getting better

First time listening to 90s rap. Not really my thing but I enjoyed Tricky

Rap for rockers. This is as good as rap gets (which isn't saying much). As usual it's all the same - it's a good rhythm but it gets tiresome. Walk this way is fantastic, but nothing else on the album comes close to it.

A lot of raw energy here. I don't find the samples as interesting as on other rap albums, but I appreciate the influence that this album had. Closer to a 3.5

On the other hand neke bengeri koji bude nostalgiju na onaj dobar način. Walk this way je goated 🐐

> bookmarked 'My Adidas', 'Dumb Girl' and 'You Be Illin'' for lols > not really listenable anymore, maybe later stuff

decent album. not my favorite not the worst. I really dislike Aerosmith though, so will never get over walk this way.

I like The consistency of the album’s energy, very fun

ATTITUDE. The album that got fratboys into hip-hop.

Rating: 5.7/10 IT'S TRICKAAAY - only now I realise it samples My Sharona from The Knack. Rest of the album was pretty funky, definitely prefer this old-school kind of rap from the modern one.

Old school is cool? I don’t know

Classic hip hop songs. Great for a productive throwback playlist. Probably won’t listen to this album proper again.

Not a big hip hop fan, but I did enjoy this. 3 stars.

Sorry dont hate me i just cant make it thru this album

-Some nice flows in "Peter Piper." I like the line "Not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good" -Hey "It's Tricky" is that Tik Tok song. It's nice to actually hear the rest of it. The song actually holds up across the rest of the track too. I like the simple but interesting beat. I swear one of the dudes sounds a bit like Ace Frehley at a few points -Cool reference to Live Aid in "My Adidas." I recently listened to Live Aid and remember the Run-D.M.C.'s section -"Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith)" is great. An awesome rendition. I like that they mixed the original guitar and drums into a back eat for their rap style -Nice guitar in "Raising Hell"

A couple good tracks, but all songs have the same type of flow - doesn't keep me interested for long

What a day

some great use of an 808. bit meh though. some belting big tracks but the filler has huge vibes of teenage kids in school with the casio keyboard. R-R-R-R-R-R-R-REMIX

A good relic of its time, but hard to enjoy with my whole heart.

Tricky and Walk this Way are awesome, but a lot of this sounds a bit dated now

A classic rap band, with a motley of instruments making a great sound

fun, some good jams for party playlists, but feels dated in a good way just wouldn't listen through again

I know a couple of songs off this. I don't mind a bit of 80s rap but this is close to the limit. It's mostly just them and drums. Started to get a bit samey. Pretty dated in 2021. 3/5.

I'm not a fan of the genre so I was surprised I found myself enjoying quite a few songs. The album was fun to listen. I'm still not a huge fan but it was a nice experience.

Average, the good is well know and the rest is fine, if not a bit samey

There is absolutely no question that this album has a great energy. Every song is delivered with fierce passion and gusto, like their lives are on the line. Every rhyme matters, every bar- and they demand you hear it. The songs this came through the most were "Peter Piper", (fab lyrics and that vocal interplay at the very start sets the tone perfectly), "It's Tricky", and "Hit it Run" (sounded like a Looney Tunes character beatboxing). The energy was infectious across all of these tracks and several more. The trouble was, when everything was pitched at the same energy level, I ended up longing for a bit more variety. Everything was at a similar pace and dynamic (mid-tempo, boom-bap drums) with impassioned, shouted vocals convincingly tying rap and rock together. Sampling was all fairly sparse (drums front and centre, occasional touches of electric guitar, scrubbing or horn samples). On first listen it ended up feeling repetitive and the dynamic feel established in the first four/five tracks started to peter out. More variety or better sequencing would have bumped this to an easy 4*- it's also a shame "Dumb Girl" put a misogynistic downer on things.

3.5 stars

compared against their contemporaries, run-dmc doesn't quite match up for me, but this is still better than any rap album today. really not a fan of their version of walk this way.

Enjoyed this a lot more than expected. ‘Perfection’ was particularly cool.

6/10, quality but not my thing

This one's a dilemma, because you can hear in every track the enormous influence it had on hip-hop, in the production, the flow, the lyrics, and the many samples and references to Run DMC found in the genre. On the other hand, it doesn't strike me as an amazingly enjoyable album on its own terms. The beats, melodies and turntable techniques sound really good on some tracks, but too sparse on others. The lyrics are often simplistic with a nursery rhyme flow (and actual allusions to nursery rhymes). I'm sticking to my guns and not rating things by how influential they were. 3* for this.

It's almost quaint compared to modern day hip-hop. "Walk This Way" and "It's Tricky" are great, but the rest of the don't do much. If the rest of the album was like those two, it would be a 4 or 5.

Interesting to hear some older hip hop. But, for me, too outdated.

Classic. Wish I could give it 3.5 stars.

Drums and not much else

pretty good. some classic well known tracks no doubt. some GREAT MCing, run dmc were clearly ahead of their peers on that front.

OK, not a huge fan sounds very dated

Enjoyed it - more guitar work then I thought there would be

Fun stuff. Takes me back. Not something I'll listen to regularly, probably.

Great listen.. 1 main hit and the rest were proficient and kinda cool background vibe.. defo higher that 3 but not a 4 for me.. again i need out of 10!!

Beats are good, energy is there, just sounds really dated and the lyrics are not quite there for me

Nice and funky, enjoyed listening to this. Highlight is the opening track 'Peter Piper'. Sound of the time again like DJ Shadow though.

Some great bits but lots of cheesy 80s rap filler

Had heard most of these from their greatest hits CD. Starts strong, but the last 5 tracks are crud

“Raising Hell” by Run-DMC (1986) As a musical product, the work begs to be examined for its commercial strategies with Adidas and Aerosmith. Lyrics are marginally interesting but rather unaccomplished rhyme play expressing comic boastfulness. Variations on the theme “We’re so good at what we do”. The only serious lyric on the album is “Proud to Be Black”, but even it lacks depth. I do like the line in this song “I’ll say it in a rap because I do not sing.” Significant explanatory power here. This album seems to be a successful attempt to bring hip hop into the mainstream, mostly by jettisoning the seriousness, violence, and obscenity (mostly) that gave rap its honesty and artistic power. Call it hip pop. Meh. Nevertheless, it’s well executed and moderately entertaining for a listen or two. 3/5

influence de soul music de papi james brown evidente

cancion preferida walk this way

brings back high school memories from our hoodies that go their namesake from RUN DMC

Hip hop. Rap. Bastante bueno.

It's Tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time It's Tricky... it's Tricky (Tricky) Tricky (Tricky)

Classic record. Unless obsessed with golden era hip hop, not really worth listening to straight through, just hit the highlights.

Good beats, flow similar to will smith hip hop

It's funny how the tracks on this album I don't remember seem to have influenced the Beastie Boys. I totally wore this cassette out as a kid listening to certain songs.

Appreciate it for what it was at the time and what it did for its genre but found it very basic.

Walk this way blijft gewoon een tijdloos nummer.

It was ok, not my thing

Never liked run dmc that much, anyway great album but not my style!

Old school rap/hip hop music that is still pretty decent. 3 stars.

Sounds like generic ‘90’s hip-hop without the bite. I understand it’s importance though as a precursor to what was to come. Just incredibly dated.

Curti!

It was about what I expected

Good one but I prefer some other DMC albums more

Some legit classics on here and loved their use of samples. Sounded repetitive at times though

This was fine. I preferred the other rap-rock album from before. Some good songs, most were meh.

Decent album. Just not a big fan of classic *boom-bap* hip-hop. Classics on this album will listen when they come on but not gonna rush to listen.

its cool

Not my thing; but can appreciate its massive influence.

Hip hop isn’t my thing, and this album isn’t gonna change my mind. Sounds really dated, not offensive but just not for me

Very fun and dynamic! It is one of the major classics of hip hop. While the beats are not extraordinary, it has some anthemic moments and the lyricism is fun all along. 7/10 [KEEP]

I guess Tricky is ok

I'm not fan of hip hop, but this was above average.

Was never a fan of their hits. Indeed, I hated whenever the Aerosmith crossover appeared on Rage (and felt the same hearing it again now). And now the first time hearing them in full, I remain unmoved. There is no atmosphere here, it's sparse beats and metronomic delivery. They are clearly influential, they get my respect, but I remain a non-fan.

It was a lot of fun but not something I’d listen casually

This is a lot of what I don't care for about the Beastie Boys, and it doesn't work any better for me here. At least there are a couple of catchy songs. Favorite track: I feel like "Walk This Way" is the most notable.

Meh.

I’m not really into rap or hip hop so not for me - but I feel I can’t give a proper rating because of this.

Not really my kind of music but I found some of the songs decent to have on in the background

Yeah sorry i see why this is popular and it flows well but nah this hardcore hiphop style is not my thing at all. Standouts are walk this way cover and raising hell.

Barne-TV

‘Twas fun but not my vibe

I liked some of the songs but it just felt like they were trying to tell me something in a very loud and very aggressive way.

its too old for how yung of the music i listen to

Hip hop from this era really does not age well imo. I get the style was groundbreaking, but from the perspective of someone born almost 10 years after its release, it comes off as cheesy and tacky. Like I would hear it in a nickelodeon special one night after school. And I feel bad, it’s not their fault it was co opted that way. But that’s what happens man. Fav Track: Hit it Run

Heard songs from it before. It's Tricky is such a banger, I adore it. In general I like this style of 80s rap but it also gets tiring after a while? Fun though 2/5

Wow, this was boring and repetative!

The Good: We get to cause some trouble! The Bad: Only if we walk their way… The Ugly: My adidas… which I’ve owned for over. decade, are all run down… Tricky… classic My adidas… more classic Walk this way… the start of a (re)-birth. Good for you RunDMC, impressive how you managed to get hip-hop to be moved out of the ghetto and into the burbs… or should we thank Rubin? Regardless, this is indeed a historic album… that gets stale real fast… Teenage me tried to start a hip-hop act with a buddy… we sucked at it,. I think my artistic name was triple D and his was doube E or something stupid like that… kids… go figure. Anyway, I listened to the album… now I can die, right? Also, let’s pretend for a minute that a Vanilla Ice would have created a song called “proud to be white”… just saying… 2*

At first I liked the simple production, great structure to the music. But then Aerosmith showed up and ruined everything. I remember when I was a preteen and sought out walk this way. I regret that.

Definitely influential to hip hop, but just sounds corny by today's standards

I like some of their lyricism, but mostly this album was kinda annoying to listen to

I hear lots of drum beats and little music. The rapping is monotonous and bordering in misogynistic. It gets an extra star for the attempt at blending genres, and in that it is still successful at times. But yeah, not for me

Couple of good songs, and a bunch of other songs that sound like worse versions of the good songs.

we're they right about rap being crap?

Lyrics og levering minder mig lidt for meget om noget Kevin fra "The King of Queens" eller Barney fra "How I Met Your Mother" kunne have leveret. "You Be Illin'" er sgu en dejlig latterlig klasker hahaha.

It's Tricky Tricky. Udover de to bangers It's Tricky og Walk This Way, bliver det mest af alt bare uorganiseret larm som man ikke kan holde ud at høre på.

I've always struggled to get into the older era's of rap :( That's no shade to the quality; i can hear how influential this album has been Fav Songs: Peter Piper, Its Tricky, Raising Hell 6/10 Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? ------ ❌ Will Listen Again? --- ❌

I'm not a huge fan of either classic hip hop or '80s rock so perhaps not the group for me. Highlights: "It's Tricky", "Is It Live"

cool beats aint it for me

Apart fromWalk this way I sid not enjoy this album but then I am not a fan of hip hop. It becomes monotonous at times.

fine i guess, but dated as hell and kinda boring to me.

1 stern

I remember seeing the video with Aerosmith on MTV back when they actually played music videos, it sounded far more interesting to me then. So many great things came from these guys being on the scene, it's just not great for me anymore.

I’m sure this blew some minds when it came out, but I just didn’t grow up with this sound. It’s ok, but it has that typical (kind of corny) old school rap sound that I just don’t dig.

Historic (and I still love the few songs I grew up with), but not my favourite.

Favorites were: My Adidas, Walk this way, You be Illin’. Didn’t like it as much as I remember, but I think this is still a really important album.

Reminds me of children’s book.

Producer Rick Rubin seems to be on a mission to make hard rock hip-hop a category with Run-D.M.C but maybe he shouldn't have bothered.

So dated even 5 years later. Landmark release with classics but that 80's mic style and the singular heavy beats is of a time and place I don't want to visit.

Life's too short. 1.5

i feel like the Run DMC guys would appreciate, conceptually, keeping it real. and so: man, i fucking Hate the two big songs from this record. Tricky is the most annoying song in the world and anything involving Aerosmith sucks shit automatically. so, we're left with a bunch of Run DMC deep cuts, which are kind of okay. cool production, tolerable rhymes. maybe there's gold hidden after the first chorus of Dumb Girl but i heard it start up and just decided that track wasn't for me. highly influential and important but wow has this aged poorly!

Funny when you remember what Hip-Hop used to be before it found itself...

Historically this was a landmark album for hip hop. But, 40 years on it is starting to feel pretty dated. All the beats and rhyming is pretty static throughout. There are a couple of good songs but listening straight through felt very repetitive.

I thought this was a bit corny. It’s strange to think this was somewhat controversial as it feels so tame now. Much preferred the less well known tracks, they definitely felt less jarring.

This really feels like the origins of pop rap, and I can't say I was a fan. Like the first — and probably best — attempt a label had at creating a mass market product from underground rap culture. I'm sure it changed the game but it's not really to my taste.

Peter Piper.

1.75 - This album is 40 years old and it’s sounds it. It has a few good songs, but it’s mostly dated and cringy.

This was fine. Sounded too much like the Beastie Boys at times 2.5

The most popular track on this album outperforms the least popular by a factor of almost a million. This is an album with two popular tracks. All the tracks have a similar sound and I'm guessing that the sound paved the way for what came after. Important for them that care.

Very dryly produced, kinda samey, okay I guess.

Rap is not my thing

Super influential and an important record but it’s not super good to listen to as a standalone album.

Aerosmith collab, it’s tricky we’re hughlights. seemed not much substance in lyrics, maybe a rushed effort studio execs

I’m sure it’s good when someone is in the mood for this music, but I wasn’t and I basically never am

I’d rather be strapped to a table in a room and played Rashied Ali drum solos all day than listen to this again. How can this list turn up Pearl Jam’s Ten yesterday and this today?! Saving Grace is Walk This Way but mainly because it’s got Aerosmith on it. 2

Almost certainly influential at the time but averages out at the lower end for Hip Hop these days

I listened to this album and initially thought it was good, but by around the fourth track, I started to get bored. Early hip-hop, as music, still lacks complexity and is not very interesting.

Whilst the beats and catchiness of the tunes are undeniable, an overbearing presence of misogyny haunts the album throughout. Instead of becoming timeless, the songs sound firmly anchored in darker, less human times.

Echt puur hiphop

to rock around its right on time its trickyyyyyy-only song that I really like on this album

It wasn't bad I just would listen tk jt right at this moment in time

Influential but shit. Like I read somewhere here it sounds like a Donkey Kong rap soundtrack.

An artifact more than an album, this is another hip hop record from this era that is hugely influential and culturally significant, but really hard to listen to 40 years later as the genre has progressed so far beyond it and this is left feeling really one-note, dated, repetitive and ultimately pretty boring. Also, is this ultimately responsible for Nu-Metal, Kid Rock, and all of the other rap-rock hybrid monstrosities?

I feel like I can’t really hate on this, but it just hasn’t aged well (2.5)

I was disappointed with this. I was expecting catchy beats and rhythms, but what I heard was outdated, cheesy and dare I say, a bit boring. Forgettable.

Considering the differences in recording quality, it's not surprising that the hits are the hits and the rest are not. Some of the mixes are just bad and hard to listen to. How they managed to nail it in some places and whiff it elsewhere is beyond me. Lyrically, however, the hits are no greater than the others. Run-DMC is all about the boast, and that's what Hip Hop was about in the 80s. It does eventually lose potency. It's an important album for the sake of music history but not one that holds up as a classic to keep in rotation.

did non like it

This record is definitely better than the previous record from them. This is when they got more rock. Incorporating rock and roll with hip hop. It works well. The classic Walk This Way with Aerosmith is on here. I think I can go out on a limb and say that that particular song is pretty important for music. This record still suffers from poor vocal delivery that mirrors the previous record. Hip hop and rap fanatics will tell me how I don’t understand the importance of it but I will just tell them that I don’t like it. We will agree to disagree and I will continue to try and find some sort of hip hop or rap artist that I like.

Definitely the oldest rap I’ve listened to and though the beats weren’t really my style it was very cool to hear was the first iterations and ideas of hip hop were. Pretty generic beats and wish there was more instrumental variety. The majority of the songs mostly melded together and none stood out to me specifically. Keeps it simple but it’s almost too digestible and just a bit forgettable.
