Sigur ros can do no wrong
Really great music to chill to
Sphärischen Klänge
i have this one too
extremely beautiful, proves how important vocal melodies can be without really having lyrics, and how people should listen to more music in foreign languages. Sounds like the best parts of Coldplay in some ways, but all killer and dreaminess, no bullshit
This is an absolute masterpiece. Sigur Rós really started something that was so unique and took the mainstream by storm. I know see that this album was the start of a wave of post-rock that changed Alternative music for the better, washing away the post grunge hangover from bands like Radiohead.
My fave guitar bowing whiney bois
So this was exactly what I was hoping would happen on this journey! What an amazing band and album that I would have never discovered if not for this. Like an Icelandic Radiohead, loved it!
Beautiful first of all, with layers of melody, rumblings, weird noises and instruments all working together, and giving so much depth. It’s motivating while calming. I have no idea what they’re saying, but I love it anyway.
What a fucking brilliant album. Produced masterfully. The song to song transition at the beginning was expert. 5 Stars

Really really enjoyed this one a ton. Excellent.
This is one of the greatest post-rock albums of all time. It is brooding, simmering, and has some incredible moments of release. Somewhere on the border of shoegaze, ambient music, and rock, this album provides incredible melodies, and a lush instrumental backing. Jónsi Birgisson’s voice is piercing and haunting and is the perfect complement to the music.
Love
Why is Icelandic music always so damn good? This album is a hidden gem. Very ambient and almost ethereal sounding on a lot of tracks, I really enjoyed this and will be listening again.
Weird and beautiful.
I love many songs from this album, listening to the whole thing all the way through was a lovely experience.
I don't have time to write much for this one. It's ethereal and one of a kind, I love every minute from front to back.
NICE
chill & calming

A classic
These guys have a really cool sound. I really enjoyed this album.
Fantastic and emotional album. Love Sigur Rós!
BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER
This was another album that really reaffirms why I've spent over 700 days listening to albums from this list because this album was totally unique and came out of nowhere. Like, where else would I have started to listen to Icelandic indie electronica or whatever. This album sounded beautiful and I could just imagine how cool a concert with a light show or something would be for this. I have no idea what the lyrics are but it sounds peaceful/maybe sad and was super relaxing for me especially paired with super intricate production. I was gonna give this album a 4 but then I realized that I've given 5's to worse, more forgettable records than this and I've never heard something like this so it's more than deserving of a 5 even if I won't listen to this as regularly as an album like Illmatic.
YES. This is why I tried this 1001 albums thing. I had no idea this existed, and it is EXACTLY my thing. Listening to it is like losing yourself into a cloud of dream dust and swirly lights, but it is not scary. It feels like it has to be like that. Like I have to be there. I'm so happy to have found this. It's perfect, a really impressive piece of art.
Caught me off guard. Really good music, shoegazer style.
Space rock
it feels like a dream at times.
INCREDIBLE! Seriously killer!
I love Sigur Ros, Olsen Olsen was my favourite, and the chilled atmosphere was very much welcome yesterday
Gorgeous classic. *Heard before.
great chill work relaxing music
I totally understand why these guys were the supporting act of Radiohead. I'm amazed. I have no idea what he is saying but I know exactly what he means. 5/5
Reminds me of so many different bands but more in spirit than in sound, the sound is pretty unique. Got a new crush yesterday, been daydreaming about her to this music, it only added to the experience.
I love this it reminds me of Fishmans by Fishmans which is another 5/5 in my eyes so beautiful
10/20/2023 - First on this site. Good ambient music, might be good for the plane

Good change of pace
Loved the album. I feel like it's a gateway to listening ambient music. The combinations of electronic sounds with very soft rock and beautiful voices (similar to Tom Yorke in a way), makes for a great experience. Loved "Flugufrelsarinn" and "Agaetis Byrjun". Feeling very relaxed.
Incredible album!
Gorgeous. As good or better than anything else I've heard from Sigur Ros.
A classic! Love the atmosphere.
I can clearly remember the first time I listened to this, walking between classes outside in fall in 2001. This album is imbued with that time in my life, but it brought plenty of its own magic, charisma, and mystery. It was (and is) like nothing else I've ever heard. It's one I put on when I want to clear my head and think about nothing, and that reminds me strongly of a dear departed mother figure, and was also playing for one of the best make-out sessions of my life. It can be all these and more, paradoxically, simultaneously. With its patient development, excellent song structure, absolutely gorgeous sounds, and obscure language, it adapts to your need.
Excellent
Nice to see a familiar face.
One of my Favourite albums to put of while working
Very interesting sonically. Nice ethereal feel
5. It's such an amazing album. I got into it when I was looking at post rock and it didn't disappoint. This is one of the best ethereal style bands I've come across. God music is amazing
Great!
Cool and atmospheric
I used to be obsessed with Sigur Rós, and listening to this album again reminded me why I love them so much. 5/5

Exceptional, original work by Sigur Ros. Atmospheric, beatifully textured soundscapes, layered with superb instrumentation.
One of the best records released in the last 25 years. Period.
I'm not someone who is opposed to listening to long songs. Multiple of my favorite songs of all time are well over the 10 minute mark. But to this day, when loading up a new album to hear it for the first time, seeing a length over an hour, with a track list of songs consistently over 5 minutes long is still daunting. Because something that long can really be hit or miss. Thankfully I'm happy to say that Ágætis byrjun warrants its 70 minute run time. It has these massive sounding instrumentals that build and build, but take just enough time before finally coming all together, unlike some of their contemporaries in the post-rock space. And these instrumentals are damn good. String and piano sections cascading and soaring through the mix creates an incredible atmosphere. An atmosphere that balances warmth and hostility perfectly. They managed to capture bliss in a bottle for these songs. But then they decided that wasn't enough, so they strapped the bottle to the side of a very quiet rocket ship, and sent it straight into space. These songs are luscious and gorgeous at their most complicated, and chilling at their most simple and still. Sometimes a particular moment of a song or an album sticks with you longer than it should. Listening to "Hjartað hamast (Bamm bamm bamm)" was definitely one of those for me. Hearing such a funky keyboard sound on this album, especially after 5 of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, was jarring to say the least. But I loved it. I loved most of this album. It's helped me realize I need to look at the run time of a piece of music as less of a crutch, and more as a blessing. Because if it's done well, I'm only going to want more of it.
oh ok.. was all but writing the "nice but not for me" review as the intro was a bit meh... then Starálfur blew my socks off. Really an example of how music transcends language and can be so important. Prefer it when it's being Rocky rather than ethereal strangely enough 4.6
This could be the most beautiful gobbledygook you'll ever listen to. An absolutely stunning achievement that takes its time to explore what sound can do in the right hands. I go back to this album pretty often when I'm feeling lonely. It's a perfect companion to sitting in those isolated, nostalgic feelings. Pop on your best headphones, light up a jazz ciggy, and sink back in your chair with this one.
Really poetic, such a journey !
wow, this is one of those albums where every track just floors me. can't listen to it all the time, it's one of those ones where you gotta be in the right mood to properly experience it. but when it hits, man there's nothing better.
When listening to Sigur Rós, time moves a little differently HL: “Starálfur”, "Ný batterí", “Olsen, Olsen”, "Viðrar vel til loftárása" August 8, 2023
Shiiiiiit, this is so good. I know Sigur Rós, but really listening to a whole album from cover to cover us another story altogether. Genius. Love it.
Obra maestra
Something in the air was changing by the turn of the millennium. Rock was mutating into forms grotesque and drab, electronic music was becoming co-opted by the mainstream and hip-hop was taking giant steps into being the dominant genre it is today. Yet it feels oddly appropriate for Sigur Rós, on their second album, to deliver a record that feels as though it was the final missive of a turbulent century and it is as ambient and bombastic as it could be. It is no understatement in saying that Ágætis Byrjun is a masterpiece. It began the elevation of Sigur Rós as a defining force of post-rock and as the poster children of atmospheric textures that soundtrack impressionistic films and T.V. shows over the coming decades. Over twenty years on, its sheer unquestioning beauty helps it retain a light that shines beyond the glow of the fetus on the album cover. No wonder fans, both casual and hardcore, continue to vouch for this album and its brilliance, for it is quite literally a good beginning.
10/10 I hate 4chan, but /mu/ actually has pretty great tastes ngl
Beautiful post-rock. Haunting vocals.
Best album ever?????? Favorite Tracks: all of them but especially Staralfur 5/5
Didn't have to understand a single word that they were saying to get the message from this album the instrumentals spoke for themself
It is what the articles suggested it to be. Original - so very Icelandic and other "ic" words like Cinematic, beautiful Ágætis Byrjun - Sigur Rós Summer up in a phrase "Take me dreaming, carry me, languid , through a mystic dream forest to the exquisite slate mountain so I can sleep in the Heaven up there" So soothing and well suited to soundtrackers and past listeners of Eno or maybe minimalists who can tolerate a soundscape album for a while - music for those who can hold unfamiliar music and can grasp imagining a film scene or creating in their "KopfKino" a continuance after the seminal scene of a films climax , the ones where the camera rises, and floats before it blurs or darkens after that long drift (like at the end credits of La Grande Belezza, or in films like Wings if Desire ).... Me, in other words. I really enjoyed how this website did a well researched review that went wide and deep, included reference to Huldufólk, the Icelandic island’s native elfin population, and its potential relevance when first listening to this so it needn't seem so odd. Well it will still be odd. But it's like a soundtrack to a very different movie ... And knowing there might be elves there gives you an opening into the ethereal fairy world you are invited to share. https://classicalbumsundays.com/album-of-the-month-sigur-ros-agaetis-byrjun/ So Imagine Brian Eno music for airports meets Nick Cave and Warren Ellis music for odd movie moments. - the outcome is something ethereal and very organic feeling ... and depicting elves maybe, in this highly original Icelandic music with lots of words ending in "-ic" to describe it Cinematic is grasp reach and ambition. Lands it too. Artistic and ambitious - and gets there. The sonic landscape of the elves and of being enthralled , engulfed, embraced warmly and sonically Ethereal Enigmatic and yes somehow familiar and soothing. Melodic and yet some schrill moments - there is falsetto Incomprehensible nordic tongue means you hear the voice and don't understand the words except in a soothing transporting nautical way like a half dream. It Reminds me greatly of "music for airports" by Brian Eno (especially on Avalon) .. and also of Moments of late Hansa Zimmer here too (blade runner 2049 ) I imagine making this , especially when young, this isdaring stuff, not even done as a project for a film, with a support or pointz but as stand alone is quite something. And they stuck with it for more than one experiment. Imagine it in black mirror or cinema credits. They can do some amazing stuff. Yes it could be trippy. I'm not sure if the effect would be happy or unhappy if you were floating drugged to this soundtrack. To my ear you don't need anything. It does enough on its own NOTED WITH INTEREST. to keep the vibe going after this album, the algo again came up with the gorgeous sounding SONG FOR ZULA by Phosphorescent.. and then the lovely, so lovely Palace played HEAVEN UP THERE. Oh yes... That might be a direct influence and connection right there ? I do thank you, algo. I like it when that happens. More of this for a haggard soul. Not for everyone but if you're this far into the list, you can probably handle almost anything. And hopefully this soothed. Should it be here on the list? Yes. 4-5 (wonderful and unqiue for a genre, unsure how influential or important it is, but beauty and art it is to me ...) Like it? 4.5 Overall. Oh gosh a 5. I'd like to hear more Palace since we are here. Written completely sober, save for the entrancement if this album .... This album sustains an idea a long as half an album side ... And yet has
Stirring, comforting, mysterious, magical. Easily my favorite album so far.
Marianne turned me onto this album when it first landed, I was ... transported? engulfed? abducted? I clearly can't find the word, but it was an immersive experience. I didn't do any research, thought maybe the lyrics were gibberish made-up sounds, but I loved it. It was unlike anything I had heard, at least I couldn't remember hearing music like it before. I was a massage therapist at the time, or soon after, and took to playing the album while working, which meant I spent a lot of meditative time with this spinning, so I heard every nuance ... a lot. I think I overdid it and haven't listened to it in years. So, I don't turn to this album anymore, I've heard it too many times, it has a connection to a certain place and time, but I spun it yesterday and spent no meditative time, it was on in the background passing breezily. But my recent experience doesn't matter. This is a 5 because it is one of those magical albums in my life that I lost myself in for countless hours. That self is still out there. Floating.
Super chill, don’t know what they are saying
I was so excited when this showed up after rating my last album; I’ve seen a lot of reviews that sounded like an album I would love. I was correct, with this being a beautiful album about life. (I translated the lyrics this time; I’ll probably do that for every album in a different language now). All of the songs, with the exception of the first and last, reach at least 6 minutes in length, but they never feel that long. They just pull you into the whole experience. I massively enjoyed this album, and I’m thinking of listening to () soon.
This album is epic. The dynamics alone are a marvel. I was struck by their patience and use of space. There are some truly surprising moments!
One of my favorites going way back to a cassette mix-tape gifted by my good friend Adrian. <3
amazing
Had to take out the vinyl for a spin! One of the most beautiful records I’ve ever heard. I think my first contact with Sigur Rós was with the movie Vanilla Sky, which features a couple of the songs from this record. Nevertheless, I don’t think I heard it in full until like 2005. Doesn’t matter, one of my youths favorites. It does have the best tracks at the beginning and at the end, so it could seem like it drags a bit in the middle, but it actually holds for the entire of its length. I will never tire to hear songs like Olsen Olsen or the title one, they’re just so gorgeous and well arranged. I’ve seen them live twice and the two times the experience was totally different but amazing nevertheless, one of the greatest triumphs from the end of the century.
So calming!
I kind of regret listening to this at work instead of in the evening as a background for reading, so I think I'll need to come back to Sigur Ros to appreciate it even more. This is the good type of boring. And bonus points for not being in English. We need more non-english music to be noticed internationally.
Wow! I've heard the couple of singles from this and while I enjoyed them, they never really drove me to explore this band more, listening to this whole album will change that.
Great! A classic!
Probably one of my most listened to albums of all time, transcendental
Beautiful, ethereal and all-together lovely. One of my favorite dream-pop albums out there. 4.5/5
I can't believe this was made in 1999
My favorite album to sing along with!
This is the first album from this list that I'd already listened to. I'm a fan of Sigur Ros so I already knew that I'd like it. Fantastic album. I hadn't appreciated how old the album was, the range of sounds that they managed to get in there was amazing. I also looked up the lyrics for the first time and now I'm a bit traumatised.
Gostei muito. Me ajudou nunca crise de ansiedade foda hoje. Preciso ouvir de novo em condições normais. 8/10.
I like the combination of the ambient passages building into orchestrated finishes, the falsetto voice that the singer (blind in one eye) modifies a bit from song to song, the Icelandic lyrics that definitely limit their potential global market, but maybe not as much as the non-linguistic vocalisations the band calls “Vonlenska, ” – maybe they were inspired by The Cocteau Twins? My co-judge and I saw them at the Palais Royale in 2001, promoting the album after this one, which featured the the Icelandic fisherman, Steindór Andersen, singing more traditional Icelandic folk songs over top of their ethereal droning. Now that was memorable show!
My dad found this album through The Economist of all places back in 2001. He showed them to me on a car ride to the Anza Borrego desert where it rained most of the way. The album quickly became one that I revisited over and over and over again. It is now one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Before I even knew what post-rock was, before I ventured far outside of my dad's CD collection I have held this album close to my heart. Since then my dad and I have listened to this album together countless times, we've seen them live at the Hollywood Bowl, and we've even listened to it on a drive at dawn through the wilds of Iceland (I will never hear "Starálfur" without remembering that incredible morning of sunlight peaking over the waterfall-laden peaks of green and troughs of black). It's a classic through and through. Jonsi has an absolutely hypnotizing voice that is accompanied by his so-crazy-it-actually-works method of bowing his guitar. There are beats and samples, there is mystery between the songs, there is emotion that flows (insert poetic Icelandic waterfall reference). This is another one of those albums that I know will be a part of my life until the day that I die. It offers me nothing but comfort and memories. Unique, beautiful, interesting. 5/5
A beautiful album - definitely will be coming back to. It got repetitive at some points, but it is so calm that it didn’t really matter I hate to give low fives, but this album definitely deserves the five
Miscellaneous thoughts on an album I’ve loved for many years and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting: Analog tape mysteries and foreign-tongued harmonies fade into far away thunder, then, radar blips. In the background, there are epic sounds like that of moving mountains, and in the foreground a human voice with human toys. Radio transmission static. Synth and guitar riffs bathed in echo like beams from another planet, joyous that they have found contact. While much of this album is very much indescribable, otherworldly, there are songs like “Ny Batteri” that very much echo the indie rock “big band” era of the day; bands that seem to share some debt to the Neutral Milk Hotels, Spiritualizeds, and Talk Talks of the 1990s. Bands like Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, all those burgeoning post-rock acts, and even maximalist solo artists like Sufjan Stevens. “Hjartao hamast (bamm bamm bamm)” is similar. These two mid-album cuts are a touch less celestial, a touch more “rock-ous” and fit more squarely in with the whole indie, post-rock scene. “Ny Batteri” definitely has Thom Yorke vibes as well. I don’t really have a point in saying this, other than I think it’s interesting, because, compared to the songs that precede and follow, they make this otherwise cosmic album distinctly Earthly, grounded in trends and scene. Spell-breakers. But I like these songs very much still. And appreciate them critically for exactly that reason: the context. Kingdom has come on Olsen Olsen. Fun with speed, a recursive loop. Something happened at the end of the last millennium. Artists were living the future. Just look at the top releases from 1999, 2000. Our artists were floating in space. Some twenty years on, an alright start, indeed.
Scientists: Behold! we found baby alien life on another planet! Abortionists: Uhm ackshually it is just a alien fetus therefore it is not alive or significant and we should kill it for convenience. You are racist and phobic. Scientists: NOOOO oh my science this is too woke! *dies of cancel culture* Abortionists: *dies because they are really just grown up fetus* ---------------------------------------------- Moral of the story: Fetus life matters<3
Score: 90 Beautiful. You don't need to understand anything they are saying to understand the music. Every song has something to offer and comes together as a very enjoyable experience. Despite it being Icelandic it still retains a very 90s feel, and not in an outdated way. It's nice to listen to something that makes you feel something
C'est un grand ui
Love this album. Chilled and euphoric in one.
I've always loved this album. I first heard it when I was in high school, a few years after it initially came out and listened to it pretty regularly in those years, so it holds a special place for me. It's just really beautiful songwriting and instrumentation. Very cinematic music. Standout Tracks: Svefn-G-Englar, Starálfur, Flugufrelsarinn, Viðrar vel til loftárása, Olsen Olsen, Ágætis byrjun
My #1 most played album.
Incredible, used to listen to this while working through the night, perfect soundtrack. I can replay every note and phonetic vocal in my head. Just so good, Olsen Olsen in particular is untouchable
Beautiful
One of my favorite bands. This album is so good. So much new ground broken, and sounds as good today as it did at its moment. Visionary, orginal, creative.
So chill and cool and atmospheric and peaceful. Even cooler when you look up the translations and meanings of the songs.
Simply magnificent album. Sigur Rós really are unique in the way they are able to combine incredibly beautiful sounds with something deeply primal. The result is an album that ressonates strongly with the listener and facilitates a wide range of emotions. ‘Svefn-g-englar', 'Flugufrelsarinn' and the title track are all masterpieces.
Listening to Sigur Rós feels like you’ve been granted access to a world where you were never meant to set foot. I started writing down songs to highlight, but quickly stopped as I became aware of the fact I was just listing the tracklist one by one. Ágætis Byrjun might easily be one of my all-time favorite albums and I feel completely overwhelmed every time I listen to it. Nothing’s meant to sound this good. Somehow Sigur Rós just do.
Thx for the bangers Bob
Lovely Icelandic ambient rock.
I appreciate what Sigur Rós is doing, their blend of post-rock, ambient, and random noises is straight up my alley. The only thing I am not always a fan of is how pretty it is. I would LOVE a darker and noisier album with Jonsi’s soft vocals, but when it’s backdropped by a full string section it can get a bit much for me. Still, I think as an album this is pretty damn good, regardless of my preferences.
What a surprising album. I had no idea what it's gonna be at all, but I really loved it. It's a beautiful blend of genres and sounds. Of course I don't understand what the songs are about at all, but it's just amazing arrangement. Love it! Saved tracks: Svefn-g-englar, Ný batterí, Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm), Viðrar vel til loftárása, Avalon
A spacious, patient, and beautiful album. You never know where it's going to go next. Songs take as much time as needed, fading into the background, but you never get tired enough to skip to the next track. It's dramatic with strong classical and jazz influences, utilizing space synths to envelop the atmosphere. The vocals are ethereal and yearnful. Enjoyed every track for different reasons. But overall it's a beautiful dreamy album to relax, trip, or play in the background to, with plenty to appreciate. "Svefn-g-englar" felt like dreaming on a cloud. "Flugufrelsarinn" was shoegazy. "Ny Batteri" was mysterious and sorrowful. "Hjartað Hamast" was tense. "Olsen Olsen" was triumphant. "Ágætis Byrjun" was sunshiney. "Avalon" felt like a dark ocean abyss. And I could still describe the others. They were unique and satisfying, and complex enough for me to replay the songs and not get bored.
Already listened to this album. Fantastic soundscapes and the best kind of avant garde post rock. Really love this album.
Fajne
Interesting to hear them wear their influences so blatantly on their sleeve in this way
So very good. The album left me speechless and I couldn't rate it for a couple of days. I had to really think hard about it because it's so good. Very atmospheric as all great post rock albums tend to be. Feels very much as if it was out of this world (it's from Iceland so that's pretty close to the truth). I'm definitely going to return to it many a time.
Deixei ser afetado pela qualidade do post-rock.
Pure artistic wonder. I felt like I was floating through the ocean and forests and space. Love it.
Forgot about this group. Hadn’t listened to the entire album, but it’s worth listening.
This is the first 5 star for me. Absolutely essential work here from Sigur Ros.
one of my best album by them
Fantastic
very good and weird, the Icelandic really adds to the angst. So many sounds and moods. Too weird for lab (their loss)
Sigur Ros is a perfect example of a band, that should be included on this list. They have such an unique sound and style, every album is completely different, yet there is no mistake, it always sounds like Sigur Ros. Also, one of few bands, that basically teleports you to the country of origin, in this case Iceland, of course, thanks to the fenomenal atmosphere of music. Sigur Ros is also high on my list of bands, that I would like to see live, but only in the middle of nowhere on a random Icelandic hill (like in Olsen Olsen video). Agaetis Byrjun most likely is on this list, because it's the first album, where Sigur Ros found their style and almost made it perfect. In my opinion, their bigger achievments are ( ) and Takk... Nevertheless, every song is interchangeable between those records and sometimes you could treat it as one. The best songs on the album are, unsurprisingly, self-titled and Sven-g-englar. Beautiful compositions, that just require you to close your eyes and drift away to that icelandic hill. One of the better contemporary bands in recent history.
Svefn-g-englar is mind-blowing.
This is right up my alley. Love this band so much and this album has been on high rotation for a long time.
The best. I am so glad to revisit this album with more mature ears.
Atmospheric while also never just melding into the background.
Atmospheric while also never just melding into the background.
Peaceful. Inspiring. Dreamy. Hypnotic. Magic. Essential. Breathtaking. Wonderful. Post Rock. 1999. Sigur Rós. Ágætis Byrjun.
Aged wonderfully since I first heard it years and years ago. Beautiful, cathartic, classic.
This dreamscape they created is the most unique sound to come out of music in decades
I just deleted all my notes accidentally oh my god here we go I could never really get into sigur rós because of the new language thing but I think it is cool in concept The instrumentals fit the singing well in almost every track The new language is kind of growing on me now I like it I kinda like how each track is really long for some reason The singing is really well executed even though I dont understand it I enjoyed this project way more than I thought I would and I really loved it I am blown away 10/10
Já við þekkjum þessa
This morning I was walking in the nearby wetlands, on a foggy morning. Revisiting this album. I almost forgot how warm, ethereal and beautiful music can make me feel. This is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever made.
Pretty, in icelandic, radiohead pablo honey-esque
Love love

I can only assume this is what the soundtrack to life in the womb sounds like.
Elemental, beautiful, atmospheric, idiosyncratic. It is what I imagine the ambient sound in Iceland to be!
very cool
Very fond of this album.
Una obra de arte
This is what all those lofi ethereal playlists are going for huh? I fucking wish I could understand the vocals, but this sounds so good.
I remember my sister being a big Sigur Ros fan when I was a kid/teen but I never really listened to them myself even though I'm a pretty big post-rock fans and these guys are some of the pioneers I'm told. I regret not getting around to it sooner immensely. What a chillingly beautiful album throughout with loads of great, unique ideas. Think this will only grow with multiple listens but I am in awe. Need to check more albums from them ASAP.
Beautiful
Angelic, etheral, divine! One of my all time favourites.
Holy shit. 10/10 I know an album is good when my first impressions of it are "Wait.. this could be the best album I've ever heard in my life"
The first time I checked this album out was upon watching the Pixies documentary loudQUIETloud, in which the Pixies were followed in Iceland going to meet Sigur Ros in their studio almost in a pilgrimage way. I don't remember seeing the Sigur Ros bandmembers on screen but I remember going WTF after hearing this. I also remember my friend saying exactly the same. I sure wasn't expecting an ambient album, and never played it again. Last year, someone suggested me () and my opinion about the band changed, but it wasn't until I received this vinyl copy that I really came back to Ágætis Byrjun (I just copypasted the title, it seems impossible to retype!). It really is an album that deserves to be listened on vinyl, and I was wrong: it is not an ambient album, there is so much more about it. I don't know if it's Iceland that do this to musicians, but the first impression I got is that it's heavenly, cold and warm at the same time, as if it were reflecting the sun at midnight. It's just majestic. There is a dream-like quality to this music. No surprise that they cite Spiritualized as one of their influences, but still, sonically, there is almost nothing on this album that could ressemble that band. I was about to go through every single track and try to describe them only to discover that it would have been a useless exercise: here, the music speaks by itself. I cite from the record booklet: "... we had our own idea of what a song was about... because of how it made us feel. Like, underwater, or a womb-like floating feeling". And I couldn't agree more. I still struggle with long albums, but this one went down much better, and that's surely positive.
Five stars. An all-time classic, and a personal favorite of mine. As is usually the case with those classic albums, I won't write a full-blown review here given that others have already written wonderful stuff about them and there's not much I can add that I feel could be relevant and interesting. Àgaetis Byrjun is just a timeless gem aimed at anyone who's into Sigur Rós or even post rock at large. Go and listen to this record a.s.a.p. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 955 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 21 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 8 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important to me): 14 Albums I might not be the best person to judge, but that I *might* include in my final list: 3.
Transcending, otherworldly, it was something i have never heard before, i have loved every single minute of it
A great album from a great band, brilliant end of the night listening.
Listening to this makes me realize why I bought the head sets that I did and the speakers that I did. It evokes a sense of curiosity and fills me with cathartic energy... my own personal musings about leaving the work that i am tied to and exploring the world greater.
What a piece!
Love it obvs
Dreamy, relaxing
kyllä tää on varmaan kaunein albumi jonka tiedän.
I remember the first time I heard this. When his voice comes in on the first song I'd not heard anything like it. Excellent
Beautiful. Fantastic.
Quietly intense and beautiful.
Zo.
You either love this dream pop Icelandic faerie stuff or you hate it. You can guess where I fall. (Re-listening to this album after over a decade brings back so much emotion… I almost cried for my lost youth during starálfur.)
This was such a gateway album for me… I still remember the room I was sat in when I first heard it 20 years ago. Just perfection!
How have i not heard this before? A treat start to finish.
Ive loved this album since the first time I listen to it. Someone once described it as "the sound of melting gold cascading down an iceberg" or something like that.
Yaaassss. Absolutely yasss!
Amaze
A classic!
Love this album to death. 5/5
I love this album and play it regularly for relaxing, yet touching and inspiring background music.
Very nice! Haven't listened to this album yet, but quite a big fan. Definitely can tell that Bon Iver has been influenced by this.
Sigur Ros, always a classic.
beautiful and mesmerizing. sounded like the ocean.
Very spacey? cool! genuinely so good. ny batteri was my favorite but the later songs in the album were super good too its all good
NIIIIIIIIIIIICE.
I already listen to and love Sigur Rós, but this was my first time listening to this album in full and wow, what a crown jewel this is. It’s poignant and pulls out this side of me that just makes me think “I’m glad to be human and that I’m on this Earth getting to experience so much beauty in the world”, which let me say is some corny BS I didn’t think my mind was capable of but hey there you go. Olsen Olsen I already knew and remains one of my favourites. Starálfur is one I hadn’t listened to before and I kept repeating it. It’s something I imagine could be transported on satellites across galaxies and a piece I believe should be among the first any other potential alien civilisations hear. I was listening to Hjartað Hamast on a walk, and after the build up and swell towards the middle, rain started pouring from the sky and I was smiling for the entire rest of my walk in the storm. These guys are masters of music symbolising inner peace and wondrous beauty.
Misschien...
Absolutely beautiful album from start to finish.
really liked this! Maybe 4.5 stars 1. cool intro music 2. I kept thinking this one was in English but the end that sounded like heartbeats getting faster was super cool 3. more heartbeat sounds and awesome strings, this is my favorite so far 4. I'm liking the wind sounds and how somber this one is. The vocals are really cool, this was my favorite of the album 5. started off so gentle, I liked that better than the heavy drums. Nice horns though 6. funky beat, I like it. the static at the end didn't feel particularly good 7. the beginning felt almost like when the sun comes out after a big storm?? I also liked the dissonant strings at the end 8. nice and chill 9. "Ágætis Byrjun" apparently means "good start" which I just think is sweet 10. the outro to this was super interesting
very nice, unusual, but enjoyable
this is so pretty
Chillax music, great when high!
i absolutely love the ethereal dreaminess of the whole thing.
Classic. My foray into post rock. I love this album.
awesome
did not listen but is sigur ros cowboy
Yes
Ghostly and one of my all time favourites. Great band from the 2000s era.
One problem that a lot of atmospheric albums have is a lack of discernible melody, which is not a problem here. They've successfully created soaring music that still qualifies as music, which is nice. I feel like I need more than one day to properly digest all of it, which is usually a very good sign. Here's a fun game to play if you only speak English, like I do: Try to figure out (without cheating) which songs are sung in Icelandic and which are sung in their made-up gibberish language. Best track: Olsen Olsen
Staralfur and Olsen olsen are personal standouts, but ALL are great.
relisten. very pretty album! tracks 2-4 are basically perfect (9/10 but its a lame five point scale)
This was a cool album. I would have never listened on my own. It felt well polished, and even though I didn't understand any lyrics, it was an enjoyable listen. I might put it on as background music again.
I liked a lot about this album. It maybe got a little boring at times, but it was good.
They have such a nice sound. It's not my favorite thing I've EVER heard, but I fully enjoyed having it on
Gorgeous Post Punk LoFi instrumental at some parts
Swallowed me whole. If the previous album (Psychocandy) felt like trying to listen through a really bad case of tinnitus, or from underwater, or just behind a locked door, this album is pure sensory overload in the best way. Only reason it's not a 5 for now is there wasn't like, a singular moment that made me transcend or cry, but that's cause everything was a first time listen and I will absolutely be listening to this again. This is an album I can see myself listening to for basically any activity, road trips, writing, cooking, lying in bed too tired to get up. Maybe not going to the gym it's not exactly energising. but it's huge and dramatic and dense without feeling exhausting. Just a long deep dream. Standouts: I'll need to listen again to get some more clear favourites but the one that made me stop in my tracks and gave me a full body chill was Hjartað Hamast. This was partly because the chord progression from around the 3 minute mark onwards is piercingly, unbearably familiar and i KNOW it's not just a song I heard a couple of times somewhere but a dear favourite of mine I just cannot think of which song it is. I'm gonna go mad trying to find it. (EDIT: YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON!! oh thank god.) Staralfur also beautiful (that one I actually do think I've heard before, and also can't think where. Fine it's fine.)
Alright, I was very opponent to their music since their beginnings until this day. This is deep, emotional, sublime even, like a trip to frosty fairyland. Will listen more often.
Best Song: Svefn-g-englar This is really mellow, doing the dishes or working music. That's really the only the use case I can see. Oh, banging! This would be good banging music!!! 4/5.
Not heard much before from this band … only really Hoppípolla. Really liked it and will be listening to more 👍
really like the vibes, very dreamlike and similar to what i listen to a lot at the moment. starting off with a banger. no partlicular favourite song, whole album is pleasant and easy listening. really nice vocals.

Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Starálfur Date listened: 23/06/26 Listen when: Evening while studying (with headphones !!) Again, when would I ever have listened to this otherwise? Some tracks were insanely beautiful. Svefn-g-englar threw me off at the beginning a bit (found it a bit jarring) but the orchestral arrangements were some of the best I've heard in non-classical albums.
I wish the 1001 had more albums that surprise me like this one did. I had it turned up to whole-house volume and during the Starálfur/Flugufrelsarrin transition, I went on my front porch to figure out where the noise was coming from. :-)
7/10 Best songs: Flugulfrelsarinn, Hjartað hamast My opinion about Sigur Rós has remained unchanged for over 20 years: enjoyable, incredibly creative, but largely background music. Don't get me wrong: this is background music at its very very best. It's background music when you want a chill, unearthly vibe. Unfortunately I have to be in the right state of mind to listen to this type of music, but it's certainly worth listening to. I just like my music with a little more oomph.
Honestly way better than I was expecting
surprisingly vibey!
Really interesting dreamy icelandic dark rock. Worth another listen for sure
Gorgeous album with some incredible dreamy moments. A few of the songs go on a tad too long but it's a wonderful listen whether paying attention or on in the background. The Icelandic language works fantastically for the vocals. 8/10
Good background music
I like it it's nice.
best track: ný batterí
simply lovely
Beautiful
Once again, an audioexperience. Very drawn out, ballady songs and vocals, somewhat meditative in nature. Not sure if my cup of tea, but great to hear!
Great album. Icelandic and in the language but very good. Great vibe and ambient sounds and textures. Really enjoyed it.
4 - I've listened to very little Sigur Rós, but I think I'm at a point in my life where I need to listen much more. I loved the vibes.
sfeer!
I wish I could understand the lyrics.
Unique for sure.
I didn't know that Jonsi was the lead singer of Sigur Ros, I didn't know that he played the electric guitar with a cello bow, but what I DID know was how much I am moved by their music. The ethereal soundscapes and the sweeping orchestration make this album a immersive listen. For me the rewards are in sitting and listening deliberately, on relatively good equipment, and without distraction. The album does lack a single stand out banger, such as Hoppipolla, but Svefn-g-Englar is as close as it comes, and its beautiful. 4 stars.
Very slow and dreamy and quite liked it although very long. Certainly different
Slow romantic alien sex movie soundtrack with a sad ending that reminds you of the journey.
Listened while working I think I like this as much as ()
okay so i listened to this mostly in the shower so i didnt do individual ratings (also skipped through a little the songs are LONG) but i can say that this is an insanely cool album i dont think ive ever listened to anything like it really never really had any experiences with post rock and for a first one this is very very cool love the genre mixing and the instrumentals themselves are also very well thought out and executed also the vocals sometimes being used as instrumentals is perfect for this album not really my thing but i appreciate it i enjoyed it very cool experience overall movie soundtrackesque
Very interesting album!
Such beautiful music.
Another album that I wasn't sure I would like but I did. Not the kind of music that I would normally listen to but this was very engaging and Pink Floydish. Ear candy for the mind.
Nice road trip music!
(5/7) kind of vibe-y. Sometimes strange but sometimes very pleasant
I haven't listened to this one all the way through in a long time. I remember how much I enjoy it. It was kind of different listening to it in the car though, as opposed to via headphones while lying down like I normally used to. Beautiful music
Makes me think
Men en jämn nivå hela tiden.
When to listen: rainy, cool day... which was actually the case here. Lit some candles, listened to the music and the rain outside. Really interesting album.
Really enjoyed this. Have never taken the time to listen to this band but now I’m wondering why I waited
Really moving, pure beauty
I remember how different Sigur Rós seemed from everything else I had been listening to when I first heard them. It is still pretty wonderful that a band from Iceland managed to get heard where I live. I have since heard Jónsi by himself and as a collaborator, and he is an interesting musician.
Original and immersive
dreamy in parts, powerful and moving
tunnelmallinen levy ja niin makeita saundeja
Beautiful haunting desolate (of its home). Svefn-g-englar, staralfur, viorar, Olsen Olsen - all stunning. An album only overshadowed because the later Takk was even better.
8/10 Excellent music if you like the feeling of dissociating and entering higher state of mind. Not my jam, but I admire the artistry
Released on 12 June 1999. Genre: Dream Pop, Ambient, Chamber Pop I didn’t enjoy the vocals that much; they felt high-pitched.
This is a beautiful album! I really enjoyed!
The problem with Sigur Ros isn't that the music isn't good, it's that I don't know when I would listen to it. I don't think I live a down tempo electronic atmospheric life. Maybe I'm more of a sad trombone instrumental
I think theres better Sigur Ros albums, enjoyed it nonetheless
This cinematic, slow vibe has been done to death recently, but you cant fault SR for being at the forefront of it. Beautiful, stirring work. Currently on a 4 because it's ephemeral rather than memorable, but may revisit that.
ethereal, sensational, I wanna trip on shrooms to this album;
Would go reeeeeally well with a warm bed, a mild flu, and a bottle of nyquil. That's not necessarily an insult. 4 stars.
This is a big bottle of nostalgia. Ny batteri was to me for a very long time nearly the most perfect song. Staralfur is epic always, always. Latter half of the album was sleepier than I remember. Nonetheless, this band is something else.
I once drove through what felt like an interstellar landscape in Iceland listening to this album and everything fell into place.
Really atmospheric/melancholic thoroughly enjoyed it
Sigur Ros has been on my radar forever, thanks to always appearing on music lists I read and seemingly being aligned with the sort of music I like. But until today, I don't believe I have ever knowingly heard a single note of their music. Well, this was very good. I'm not sure it was 5 star good on my first listen, and it's clearly a weighty album which demands multiple listens, which I have not yet managed. But most of it will be added to my 1001 car playlist, which bodes well for the future.
A beautiful, ethereal album. Sit back and enjoy, while you're taken to outer space. 4.2/5.
Por estos discos hago este reto.
Melancholy
Top five flying through my spaceship through an alien ice planet album
Liked this group a lot, esp their full ambient records
Melhor do que esperava. Parece interlúdio de músicas do pink Floyd
8.5/10 - Really impressed by this album. Not speaking Icelandic does not detract from the beauty and feelings of the album. Stunning!
Absolutely stunning album, every time I listen to this it grows on me. A 70 minute run time doesn't feel too long at all. 9/10
Cinematic Icelandic post-rock, or, as I like to call it, Reydjöhed. A pretty beautiful collection of music that’s just warm and inviting enough to then unsettle and challenge in all the right ways.
Cool sound. Really sounds like they inspired Radiohead 7/10
Some beautiful deep ocean kind of textures going on here, sort of like Sea Change expanded out. I really liked "Viorar vel til loftarasa." I'm not sure I'll ever listen to it again but maybe if I'm ever taking psychedelics in Iceland or something I'll give it another go
A post rock classic. This album is incredibly magnetic and paints a vivid cold atmosphere. It does require attention tho.
I'm torn on this, because I quite enjoyed the album but... I don't know, it's too sunny outside. This isn't a sunny album too me. Lots of great songs, just a mismatched vibe.
Very Etheral album. I loved the orchestral instrumentals and want to continue checking this album out
I kinda wanted to dislike it. This was the music a lot of rich kids from my hometown listened to in high school and I actively avoided it since. The first listen strengthened my feelings that yeah it’s this hipster kind of music that I do not like. But then I listened again and again, the third time on headphones and I have to concede that it’s pretty good. Oops
They're Icelandic, so I expected ‘different,’ but this band was surprising. It was like a good wine - lush, complex, and best when you let it breathe.
I had a good time listening to this album. I didn’t understand any of the lyrics but the vocals were great and so was the instrumentation. Maybe gets a little slow in the 2nd half but not enough to make it bad. Fav song is Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása, least fav is Ágætis byrjun.
This Icelandic album that I don't know how to say or even type is a solid one. It's very dream poppy, which means it's very atmospheric and quite peaceful. It's instrumentation is quite sparse in parts of the album. It also has quite colourful arrangements on top of that, which I adore; they never fail to be excellent. I could find myself returning to enjoy the solitude this album emits. Highlight Song/s: "Starálfur" and "Ný batterí"
this been on my list for a while excited to check it out them icelandic mf know how to make some good ass music on bro
3.5/5
7.0/10
This album hovers between a 3 and 4 for me. The music production is good, and I can really get into it if I'm in the mood for a slow burn. The Icelandic lyrics are a challenge, especially if there's a story in there that I'm supposed to be enriched to discover.
Enjoyed it.
Rating: 8/10 Gorgeous ambient waves of post-rock bliss, like you're floating. They create a beautiful soundscape that you can love even not understanding the words, which makes me realize that I've never ACTUALLY dived in to the lyricism of this album. I'll have to change that next time I listen
Very interesting stuff, pondering will be done
Movie music. Really good movie music. 4/5.
Long time since I've listened to this
Album #73, Sigur Rós, Ágætis byrjun, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ What a beautiful album. I never listened to Sigur Rós, despite them being pretty massive on the festival circuit when I was going to festivals all the time. I never once went to see them. That’s a shame, because I would have loved this when I was younger. I suppose today is the next best time to hear them. If you’ve never been to Iceland, I highly recommend it. But if you can’t go, this album is the next best thing. This literally sounds like what Iceland looks like. Monolithic landscapes, slow pace, violent weather. Totally beautiful. For me, I only really care about how music sounds. I don’t care too much about the technical side of music making. If a sound moves me, I genuinely don’t care how it was created. So post rock should be right up my alley, as it’s all about that. I like post rock, but I wouldn’t be an aficionado. Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden would be one of my favourite albums, and any time Mogwai comes on, I tend to love it, but that’s probably not scratching the surface. This is, for the most part, right up my alley too. I’ve rarely heard an album that starts as well as this. The first 35 minutes or so are incredible. It’s genuinely stunning. But it does lose me a little bit towards the end. As can happen with this genre, it’s too long. It gets its point across early enough and I feel like it runs out of ideas near the end. But it is a stunner of an album, and a slightly edited version would have been an easy five. As it is, it can feel a bit bloated and a bit daunting to come back to, so for that reason it’s a four.
This takes me back to my college years, where so many of my friends found sigur ros. Wasn’t for me back then, but I’ve gained an appreciation for what they do over time. I really like that, knowing zero words in Icelandic, I can just treat to vocals as part of the music. Calming, chill album, just great.
Original et sympatique
Dbdbvv dudicin rris dudinn waxjick. Translation: you can’t translate a fake language
I know this is a great album, I’m not in the mood for this today
I really love this album. It's very dreamlike and I feel as though I'm floating in space when I'm listening to it. Not the cold, empty, lonely space, but more of the moon and shooting star kind of space. Favourites: Svefn-g-englar Flugufrelsarinn Ny Batterí
This was a trip. Loved it
very very cool album
Wow, this was an amazingly beautiful album. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in since it’s Icelandic, but by the end I realized post rock might be one of my favorite genres of music.
Not my favorite post rock but still good
